Activities at New Tabor Lodge No. 17

Results From Victoria Lodge No. 32 The first meeting of 1983 was a very constructive one, it is just a shame more of the members were not present to participate in it.

The regular monthly meeting was held Wednesday, January 5, at Citizens National Bank at 8 p.m.

President Mike Ahlstrom called the meeting to order. This was followed

by Jason Motal leading the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silence for our departed members.

Secretary Adele Donalson read the minutes of the December 1st meeting and they were approved as read. Treasurer Evelyn Horelka

read the treasurer's report which was accepted. It was decided to present Ben Malina with his 50-year pin at one of the lodge socials.

Two new members were accepted into the lodge, they were: Chris Mikulenka and Richard F. Bettge.

A lengthy discussion was held by the members present on the start of preparations for the July 10th Czech Festival to be held at the Community Center. A report was made by new Financial Secretary Katherine Wokaty on a phone call received from Southern Living (Continued on page 3)

The last meeting of 1982 was held Sunday, December 5, 1982. After the regular business meeting, officers for 1983 were nominated and elected by the members present. The officers to serve for 1983 are as follows: President-Andrew Vavra, VicePresident-Henry Mocek, SecretaryMelvin Skrabanek, Financial Sec.Martha Trcalek, Treasurer-Stanley Mrnustik, Youth Leader-Susan Skrabanek, Bldg. Custodian-Carol Petty, Reporter-Patsy Blaha, and Guide-Shelia Hilderbrand.

Board of Trustees are: Wilfred Hilderbrand, Betty Suehs and officers.

Resolution Committee: Stanley Mrnustik, Betty Suehs, and Melvin Skrabanek.

Auditing Committee: Lola Vavra, Wilfred Hilderbrand and Betty Suehs.

Later in the evening, at 6:30 p.m., we had our annual memorial service for the members who had passed away since December 1, 1981. The service was conducted by Rev. Henry Beseda, pastor of the Snook Brethren Church. Members of our Youth Club lit the candles in memory of: John R. Urbanovsky, Delphine Courtney, Walter Navratil, • Henry W. Sefcik, George A. Sefcik, Alice Marie Watson, Warren C. Bain, Marvin Matcek, Frank G. Mrnustik, Henry Matcek,

Lillian Heldmann, Emil M. Hyvl, and Sefcik.

Following the memorial service, our Youth Club presented a Christmas program. Our thanks go to Susan Skrabanek, youth leader, for always presenting an entertaining and joyful program. As usual, our children did an outstanding job.

Magazine concerning the Czech Festival. The magazine wanted to know what, we were having and the date of the festival. Hopefully, this will be published in that section of the magazine showing events to be held in Texas.

Vice-President Ella Arnold was made general chairman for the festival and she appointed Matt Vanek to check on the bands for the dance. Mrs. Arnold also furnished the refreshments after the meeting.

It was decided that a covered dish supper would be held at the next meeting February 2. The time will be at 7 p.m. before the meeting. The lodge has quite a bit of ham in, the freezer from the December 5

Christmas Dinner. Vegetables and salads will be needed, plus some desserts.

We will be losing our former Financial Secretary Adolf Motal soon. He is being transferred to Corpus Christi. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

The Youth Club has not been very active since Christmas. January 22, they will go to Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theator for pizza and to play games.

As stated above the next monthly meeting will be Wednesday, February 2, with a covered dish supper to start at 7 p.m. at the Citizens National Bank. Members are urged to attend.

After taking care of all our formal obligations for the evening, we "Got Down" to the serious business of enjoying a deliciously-prepared, and served "Turkey and Dressing Supper" with all the trimmings.

Needless to say, everyone had a most memorable, entertaining and feastful evening.

Czech Language Studies Continue At ACC Many groups on the college campus are active and have lots of fun, but none have any more than the ACC Czech club.

This group is made up of area residents who take Conversational Czech through ACC's Continuing Education program, and who promote many fun-filled social activities for the club in the community.

One can always expect to see 'a "Kolache Boot" at all the local carnivals, parades, and other celebrations. The ladies selling kolaches will be colorfully dressed in the native costumes of Czechoslavokia. The group is composed mostly of, but not limited to, persons of Czech heritage. They are interested in educating the public and their families about their rich heritage as they learn the language and explore their interesting cultural background. The classes at ACC include people of all ages— the youth add to the variety as the older offer their wisdom and memories.

Of this group, none has any more excitement or fun than their instructor Mr. Bill Souchek. Well loved by all his students for his warmth and avid personal interest in each student, Souchek probably is most responsible for the continuing success of these Czech classes and social activities at Alvin Commu:iity College. His spring class begins February 3 and will continue each Thursday evening, 7:009:00 through April 14. Tuition for this course is $20 if you live in the Alvin School District. If you live out of district, an additional $3 is added to the tuition.

Lodge 88 Announces Czech Classes Mr. William Souchek, a professor of the Czech language at Alvin Junior College, will teach Czech at Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

Classes will be held on the dates listed below: January 24 and 31 February 7, 21 and 28 March 7, 21 and 28 There will not be any fee for these lessons. Hours will be from 7:30 until 9:30 p.m.

Eastfield Community College To Teach Czech Czech I lessons will be taught at the Eastfield Community College in Mesquite for 10 weeks from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday nights, beginning January 27, 1983. The tuition will be $35 (Scholarships available).

Czech II lessons will also be taught at the same location for 10 weeks from 8 to 10 p.m.

Thursday nights, beginning January 27, 1983. The tuition will be $45 (Scholarship available).

Both locations of the Czech lessons will be taught at Eastfield Community College, N200.

San Jacinto To Teach Czech To readers in Pasadena, Houston, Highlands, Humble, and Baytown. The San Jacinto College, North is offering Conversational Czech, with elementary sentence structure in writing.

Classes will begin January 19 for ten weeks, starting 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with Bernard Orsak as the teacher. The cost for this course is $30.

Ft. Worth Lodge 154 To Host District III Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

After the Pledge of Allegiance the members stood for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased Brother C. B. Powell and Sister Ruby Tobola Caskey. May they rest in eternal peace.

All the reports were approved as read.

Christmas Greetings were read from Sister Frances Dalton and Tommy Gallagher of New York.

Thank you notes were read from Sister Eddie Lee Powell and family, Sunshine Easley and Zdenka Skotak of Dallas.

Sister Pavey reported on cards send to the sick and sympathy cards.

We received a call from our District III President Brother Vernon Wood and the District III spring meeting will be at Lodge 154, April 10th.

We would like to have a good turnout. Mark the date.

A special thank you to all who worked the New Year's Eve dance.

Everyone had a good time.

Brother Jerry Milan had to attend a meeting in Chicago, December 27th, so Sister Henrietta joined him and got to visit with her family for a few days. They enjoyed their visit and were back to celebrate New Year's Eve with us.

We wish a speedy recovery to Sister Vicki Steinman who was rushed to the hospital with a collapsed lung and will have at least a 2-week stay. Get well soon!

Benny and I visited Brother Carl Zich (Lodge 92) for a few minutes, he is in the same hospital as Vicki and he hopes to go home soon. Hope he got a good report today.

Brother Joe Milan was our door prize recipient and he was not present. He had to work and then fell 10 feet off a ladder; luckily, he wasn't hurt seriously.

Our February meeting will be held the first Sunday, February 6th; be sure to remember the change.

News From Lovelady Lodge 74 Monday night, January 10th was our first meeting at Lodge 74 for 1983. The installation of re-elected officers and trustees was held at 7:30 p.m. Jeff Moore installed the officers and trustees and Susanne Gauthier made pictures of the installation ceremony of the group, also various other pictures for our scrapbook. We all thank Susanne very much.

The regular meeting was opened at 8 p.m.

All reports of officers and various committees were read and approved.

Linda Michka, our youth leader, reported she has 23 active members in the youth club.

Needville Lodge 81 Announces Annual Chili Supper Our regular monthly meeting was held January 9, 1983. The meeting was called to order promptly at 2 p.m. by President Charlie Matcek.

Sister Mary Werner led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and we remained standing in silence as a tribute to our two deceased members, Brother Louis Heidemann and Sister Lillie Sefcik. Our sympathy goes to these families.

All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Our newly-elected Financial Secretary Jo Ann Morgan gave her report.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall gave her report.

Winnifred Susan gave the financial statement from the Memorial Fund.

Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel reported on the hall activities and then gave the financial report. All reports were accepted as given.

We were sorry to hear that Brother Herbert Nowotny was on the sick list. We missed you at our meeting and sincerely hope to see you up and about soon.

We all admire the Choral Group from Lodge No. 88 for their faithful appearance at our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II during the Christmas season. The residents enjoy the singing immensely, as well as the visitors. Thanks again for giving of your time and talents.

The Audit Committee met January 11, 1983 at 5:30 p.m. to audit all of the books. Due to Brother Nowotny's illness, the books were audited by Brother August Teykl and wife and Victor Werner.

We will again sponsor our annual chili supper Tuesday, February 8th, with serving beginning at 5 p.m.

Ladies don't forget to bring your favorite homemade pastry. We'll also have plenty of homemade bread, fritos, catsup, hot coffee or tea to go with your chili, so keep this

Lodge

The New Year of 1983 for Lodge No. 88 brings on many responsibilities and work for the newlyelected officers and numerous committees and members to maintain a smooth operation of our Lodge No. 88.

The annual calendar will be filled with Friday, Saturday and special dances, parties, rentals for members and guests and all this has to be taken care of by the elected and appointed members in different position.

The first Friday dance this year was with a band named "H.O.T. Czechs" and performing for us for the first time; they were wellreceived by our attending guests.

The "H.O.T. Czechs" proved themselves and played well.

Saturday's dance held January 8 with music by John Sullivan, was an advance-sale dance and carried a dress code. The attendance did not break the record, but the guests enjoyed the ballroom music in our pleasant surroundings, the Chandelier Ballroom. Both nights the Entertainment Committees were in their places to greet the arriving guests for the year 1983.

We are sad in parting with our lifelong member, Sister Augustina.

Winkler. For the past 9 years she resided in our lovely nursing home in Taylor, Texas. She was one of the first guests to enjoy the cozy environment of our S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home. Sister Augustina Winkler passed away Sunday, January 9, 1983 at the age of 93. She is survived by one son, V.A. Winkler; one daughter, Martha Walla; and one sister, Emily Bednar, all of Houston. She is mourned by seven grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren; and seventeen-greatgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Wednesday, January 12 in the Brookside Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Irvin officiating. Interment at Brookside Memorial Park took place. Sister Augustina Winkler, while in good health and living here in Houston, belonged to the Birthday Club and enjoyed the monthly activities. We extend our sincere sympathy to the surviving family of Augustina Winkler.

As I read the Obituary column in the Houston Post this morning my eyes caught the name Cyril Joe Kubala and, immediately, memories of early days of my life came back to me; when we arrived in America and settled on a farm in East Bernard, Texas, surrounded by many Czech and German families for four years, we were quite close to the Kubala family; there were three boys and one girl: namely, Lawrence, Method, Cyril and Angeline and we enjoyed each other's company very much attending the barn dances in the vicinity, and there was a barn dance every time a new barn was built and a celebration was held. Mother would let me go to those, but not to town and attend a dance in the SPJST Hall of Lodge No. 28. After growing up, I settled in Houston and lost track of Cyril, but, associated with Angeline, Lawrence and Method; they were Lodge 88 members and attended lodge functions, until, by sheer surprise, I met a lovely young lady, the manager of the Memorial Village Apartments where I live, Mrs. Dorothy Blackwood, and, in our conversation, I learned and realized we are not strangers. Dorothy told me about her father being in the hospital quite ill and now I learned he passed away January 9, 1983 at the age of 89. Cyril Kubala was a World War I Veteran. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 12 at Earthman North Freeway Chapel, with Rev. John Prill officiating. He is leaving his wife, Bessie Kubala; one son, Cyril Kubala; two daughters, Bessie Hermis and Dorothy Blackwood, all of Houston; 19 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Interment was in Garden of Gethsemani. May he rest in peace.

117 Robstown Meeting Report

Dear Readers: At a recent called meeting of

Lodge No. 117, Robstown, Mrs. Betty Jurica was elected youth leader to replace Eugene Hrncir, who has served the past two years.

Sister Jurica was assistant leader for several years.

The lodge held its annual meeting and Christmas social at Nolan's Inn, December 12th. The membership voted to pay the yearly insurance premium for one of its elderly members who is in need at this time.

They also asked Financial Secretary Helen Pavelka to try to have the new bookkeeping system set up by February 15th.

Leading the lodge in 1983 are the following officers: PresidentKenneth Foerster, Vice PresidentFrances McDonald, Secretary/Reporter-Thelma Hrncir, TreasurerKathryn Marek, Financial-Secretary -Helen Pavelka, and Youth LeaderBetty Jurica.

The next meeting will be held March 6 at 2 p.m. at the JacksonWoods Swim Club House, located on Peach Tree between IH-37 and Leopard Street. A game party will follow. All members, youth club parents, and friends are cordially invited to attend.

Again, I am going to write a few lines about our "doings" at Rozkvet Lodge 172.

The progress is very much improving, thank God, and we are indeed proud of all our activities doing so well by all our leaders and members being so concerned and being proud of our little "baby dome." Everyone seems to be so overjoyed about it so much so let it not be only for a certain length of time. I am urging each of you to be helpful because this is the only way we can progress. Please give your help to our leaders and ideas as well as opinions. First of all, by your attendance at the meetings only 3 or 4 times a year will not solve the problem. I love to attend lodge meetings because they are educational and we know what is going on about our forthcoming activities. I would like to remind you again that each second Wednesday of every month we hold our lodge meetings, so mark your calendar.

Our last meeting was held January 12th.

Our New Year's Eve Dance was a real success. People were from corner to corner, it looked like onehalf of Texas was here and we certainly did appreciate everyone's participation and their patronage.

Thanks, and, especially to Lee Roy Matocha from Fayetteville who provided such wonderful music that no one wanted to go home after midnight. Everyone also enjoyed

delicious baked cornbread with black-eyed peas. Everybody was dressed up so pretty, it made you feel that everyone looked better than the Hollywood stars.

Our last Saturday's dance was also well-attended with music furnished by Donnie Wavra and the Hi-Liters. Thanks to Donnie for all the beautiful music that everyone enjoyed so much.

Our first meeting of 1983 was Wednesday, January 12th and all of the members of Lodge 177 want to extend best wishes to everyone for a very happy and prosperous New Year!

The meeting was called to order by our new President Jerry Tomastik at 7:35 p.m• who then led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.

We had a pretty good turnout for the first meeting of the new year, with 44 members present.

The minutes of our December meeting were read by our Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe and were approved as read.

The newly-elected officers for 1983 are: President—Jerry Tomastik,Vice President — Walter Jezek, Secretary—Dorothy Lisenbe,Financial Secretary—Helen Bland, Treasurer —Josie Tomastik, Youth Leader-Ann Tomastik.

President Jerry Tomastik thanked all of those who came out to clean our lodge on January 2nd.

Bro. Louis Driska reported that his wife is quite ill. Sister Driska, we do wish you a speedy recovery and that you will be well very soon! We missed you at our lodge meeting.

Our Christmas party in December was a great success, with delicious food and a good band for our dancing pleasure. We had a -real good turnout and everyone had a very, good time Now that the holidays are behind us, and are pleasant memories, let us all get back to the basics again and all strive to do better in 1983 in the things we need to. On the regular meeting day the second Sunday in January, we held the installation of officers for the year 1983. Installing officer was our District I Director Ben Trcalek.

Brothers and Sisters: This may also apply to other lodges that issue membership cards to their members. Frankly speaking, we believe these cards are good for the membership; it reminds them that they are entitled to the functions that their lodge offers.

Appreciate your enemies. Your best friends won't tell you. They will gloss over your faults, unwilling to hurt your feelings — or maybe they have the same faults and that's why they are your friends. However, if you want to know on how you rate, listen to your enemies. They will not only tell you — they will tell everybody else!

Any individual must admit that one is pretty far from being the perfect human being, but any, improvement one has ever made was accomplished by listening to enemies. Yes, we all have them.

Acquaintances are wonderful for our self-esteem; they smooth the hard places and give you a life when a person needs it. However, if you want an honest picture of yourself, just listen to your enemies describe you. It may be a caricature — and a cruel one — but they will put their finger on your outstanding fault, and that is something to be eternally grateful to them for!

sommin■■emm COTTONWOOD YC MEETING RESULTS Dear Members and Readers, Lodge 6 Youth Club had a fair attendance at their January 9 meeting.

Our Christmas Party held December 19 was well-attended. The supper was delicious; our thanks to the cooks who always do a good job.

A Christmas program presented by youth club meMbers performed their parts well. Without Santa Claus our festivities wouldn't have been complete; he visited with the little ones which we hope he will do again next year. My thanks to all the participants, Santa, the youth club that presented me a gift, the person who had my name, each family and each person who gave me a gift that I can use very well. My sincere thanks, again!

We were glad to have State Youth Director Jann Wilson and her husband Mike, also our Editor Rudy Sefcik and Sister Maxine, plus all the members with their families; all of you come back, again.

My thanks to those who helped decorate the lodge hall because everyone worked hard and did a fine job. The decorations for New Year's Eve were also put up by the same members.

The youth club made needlepoint Kleenex boxes at Christmastime for their families and for themselves.

Wednesday, January 9, 1983 — VRSTNiK/7 Our ticket sale during the Yuletide Party turned out quite well. We appreciate everyone's support.

Lodge 6 Youth Club donated $75 to the Therese Dobecka Memorial Fund. We also wish to thank Lodge 24 in Cyclone for the $50 donation, which was very thoughtful of their members.

The youth club is collecting paper to donate to the Catholic Church at Tours; the truck will be at the church location, January 29th.

We will start making items for Valentine's, Easter and Mother's Day. A trip to the SPJST Museum is in the planning stage, including to eat out somewhere.

January 12 was planned by the club members to visit the West Rest Home to sing songs and recite poems. A treat at the Pizza House to eat pizzas afterwards was also planned.

Kevin Dobecka brought the birthday cake. Thank you, Kevin.

Darrell Uptmor will bring a cake to the February meeting.

We also discussed the possibility of going skating for our February meeting.

LODGE 30 YOUTH PLAN FEBRUARY PROJECT Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting January 2, 1983 at 2:30 p.m.; in the Taiton Community Center.

President Vickie Dorotik called the meeting to order. Jennifer Dluhos led the Pledge and Marjorie Treumer said the prayer.

Our project for the month of February is collecting nylon stockings. The members were also asked to make a Valentine for the door prizes, and for the contest, everyone is asked to make a Valentine.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Darren Dybala. Door prizes were also given and won by Michael Marek and Danny Borak.

CHRISTMAS AT LODGE 179 Christmas at Lodge 179 Warrenton Youth Club was a very busy time but most enjoyable.

Our short business meeting was combined with a great party, meaning, songs, poems, gift exchange, bags of goodies, and a most delicious supper of ham with all the trimmings and too many desserts. This all took place December 11th.

December 12th we sang Christmas carols and German songs at Windedale, University of Texas Christmas open house; that evening was Santa Claus and sing-a-long at Round Top Square.

December 19th was our Christmas Program at Round Top Church and social hour following.

December 22nd was caroling around the community starting at 3 p.m. and ending with a party at the Educational Building.

December 31st was New Year's Eve party for everyone.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY The members of Waller County SPJST Lodge No. 42, wishes to express their deepest sympathy to the bereaved families of brother HOMER L. CHEANEY, who died October 31, 1982 at the age of 59 years.

Brother Cheaney was admitted to Lodge No. 42 June 8, 1973. He was a lifetime resident of Waller County and served his Country in the Armed Forces during World War II. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 2 at McWilliams Funeral Home.

Interment was in the Hempstead Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Cheaney of Hempstead; two sisters, Ruth Milam and Janice Machac, both of Hempstead; and two nephews, Jerry and Terry Machac, also of Hempstead.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY The membership of Waller County SPJST Lodge No. 42, wishes to express their deepest sympathy to the bereaved families of brother FRANK L GREGOR, who passed away November 13, 1982 at the Colonial Bell Nursing Home in Bellville, Texas, at the age of 87.

Brother Gregor was admitted to Lodge Slovenska Prilezitost No. 119 April 1, 1923, and he served as secretary of that lodge for many years.

His wife, Alvina Zadelsky Gregor, preceded him in death 18 March 1981.

Brother Gregor lived most of his life in Monaville and the last five years in Sealy. He was a dedicated public servant, having served as constable, and as Justice of the Peace for 41 years under Governors Miriam A. Ferguson, James V. Allred, W. Lee O'Daniel, Allan Shivers, John Conally and Preston Smith.

Brother Gregor was a member of the Catholic Church.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 16 at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Brookshire. Burial was in Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston, with Rev. Hugh L. Parsons officiating.

Pallbearers were Frank Kaspar, Chris Kaspar, Wilburn Stefka, Gerald Holder, Weldon Laas and Leon Dreahn.

Survivors include his daughter, Martha Dusek of Sealy; brothers, Joe Gregor of Sealy and Jerry Gregor of Bellville; sisters, Tonle Stefka of Hempstead and Lydia Mikeska of Freeport; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sister Mikulas resided in Bell County most of her life. She was a member of Ocker Brethren Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971 and two infant sons.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

Monday, November 29 at Ocker Brethren Church, with the Reverends Albert Michalik and James Parks officiating. Burial was in Ocker Cemetery. Harper-Talasek Funeral Home of Temple was in charge.

Survivors include two sons, Jerome Mikulas of Temple and Jimmy Mikulas of Austin; a sister, Rosie Stepan of Temple; two grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Brother Jerome was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge 84 and KJT III, Dallas. He was a past officer at Lodge 84 for several years and also a bar chairman. Before retiring early in 1982, he was a co-owner of the Rejcek Brothers' Garage in Dallas.

Survivors include his wife, Genora Rejcek of Dallas; daughter, Nodya Thornton of Huntsville; granddaughter, Arron Thornton of Huntsville; grandson, Matthew Thornton of Huntsville; 8 brothers, Raymond Rejcek of Dallas, Jody Rejcek of Dorchester, Alphonse Rejcek and Felix Rejcek of Houston, Edward Rejcek and Leo Rejcek of Ennis, Willie Rejcek of Abbott and Rudolph of Arlington; 6 sisters, Martha Veselka of Waco, Rudy Gaiser of Dallas, Louise Cooper of Tomball, Mary Miller of Leroy, Willie Mae Janecka of Dallas and Edna Knopp of Killeen; and many nieces and nephews.

Rosary was recited December 9th at the St. Bernard's Catholic Church.

Funeral mass was held December 10th at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, with Rev. William A. Richard, celebrant. Entombment was at Calvary Hill in Dallas.

Brother Sid Pokladnik gave the eulogy.

JOHN SVADLENAK, of Denison, and formerly of Ennis, who died at a Denison hospital Saturday, November 27, 1982.

Matilda Janie Szabo was born November 1, 1898 at Alma, Texas, the daughter of Louis and Fannie Svadlenak Szabo. She attended Ennis school. She was church musician for the Unity Brethren Church in Ennis during the ministries of Rev. Chlumsky, Juren, Hegar, Barton and Kosthroyz.

She married John Svadlenak November 16, 1915. They lived in Dallas until retirement and then BROTHER REJCEK'S moved to Kaufman. Her husband EULOGY died June 21, 1965. Then she lived in Bro. Jerome Rejcek's eulogy was Denison where she was a member of given by Bro. Cyrill "Sid" Pokladnik the Waples Methodist Church, the at the funeral.

Sister Genora Rejcek United Methodist Women and requested that the eulogy be printed Abundant Life Sunday School Class. in the Vestnik to be shared by all. It Survivors include one son, John Taylor Svadlenak; one daughter, was so well done and the entire Mrs. Lillian S. Luna of Dallas; one family appreciated it.

REJCEK, and nephews. who passed away December 8, 1982 Jerome Steve Rejcek was born after a lengthy illness at the age of December 19, 1917 in West, Texas 64. and died in Dallas December 8, 1982,

just eleven days before his 65th birthday.

Jerome's parents, Mr. John Frank Rejcek and Mrs. Agnes Elizabeth (Kohut) Rejcek, both now deceased, were a pioneer Czech family in the West-Abbott community. All of Jerome's brothers and sisters are living, except Johnny who died in 1941.

Jerome and Genora were married June 25, 1949 and thus enjoyed 33 years of happy companionship.

Genora's maiden name was Taylor.

In 1939 Jerome moved to Dallas from West and the Abbott area where he completed his schooling. In Dallas he was associated with the Little Giant Tractor Saw Co., spending 24 years with the firm. In 1958, Jerome and his brothers, Raymond, Jody and Willie formed Rejcek Brothers Auto Service.

Jerome and Raymond continued to operate the business until 1982, when both retired.

Jerome was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church since 1951 and held longtime membership in SPJST Lodge 84 and KJT Lodge No. 111 in Dallas.

Jerome's life centered around his family and his friends. One of his great sayings was: "If you have friends, you are rich. Friends mean more to me, than money." His love for Czech music is known to all of us; one of his greatest joys was the membership in bands, such as the Kohut Band, Joe Pokladnik's and above all his father's band, the John Rejcek Band which was composed entirely of family members.

Much could be said of Jerome's association with each of us. We will always treasure his wisdom, his knowledge, and above all his faith, for his sharing of these with us, we are most grateful. His presence at any meeting or gathering was a source of joy to all. He was truly an ambassador of good will His attitude toward his fellow man was a precious thing. To him, all people were good. The good he saw in others was his greatest good. The love he felt for others was his greatest strength. His home was his castle, his greatest joy was when family and friends gathered at his home.

We know that Jerome is: "AT HOME in the beautiful Hills of God, by the Valley of Rest so fair; some day, some time, when our work is done, with joy, we shall meet him there."

On behalf of the family, I thank you for your support and attendance at the rosary last night and the service today. The flowers, the cards, the expressions of love and sympathy will be treasured forever

by Genora and the family.

Sister Orsak is survived by her loving husband, Charlie; daughter, Geraldine (Jerry) Smaistrla; sons, Ronald Lewis Horelica, all of East Bernard and Glenn Mark Horelica of Wharton; stepchildren, Daniel Orsak, East Bernard, Bennie Orsak, Palacios, and Elain Mach of El Campo; one sister, Mildred Repka of East Bernard; brothers, Bill, Joe, and Henry Mikus of Houston; also twelve grandchildren.

Wake services, conducted by Sister Carola Hajik, and the rosary, recited by Henriette Jalowy and Dorothy Michulka, members of the Catholic Daughters, were Tuesday, December 14, 1982 at 7:30 p.m. The family rosary was led by Eileen Prazak earlier in the day.

Pallbearers were Eugene "Bo" Repka, Frank Fry, Dennis Kulhanek, Michael Mikus, Henry Gene Mikus and Ben Orsak, grandson.

Honorary pallbearers were: August Blazek, Larry Wetz, Charlie Minks and Jerry Orsak, Jr. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis Horelica, parents, Joe and Rosie (Urban) Mikus, one brother and one sister.

Davis Funeral Home of Rosenberg, Texas was in charge of the funeral arrangements. She was laid to rest in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

Brother Haskovec was born December 22, 1900 in the Crisp Community, the son of John and Mary Toupal Haskovec. He was reared in the Telico community and then later farmed in that community. In 1920 he married Miss Pauline Novak of the Mott community and they made their home in the Telico area. In 1945 they moved to the Boyce area. Mrs. Haskovec died in April, 1956 and in 1957 he married Mrs. Pauline Swadlanek of Alma.

Brother Haskovec was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a fifty-year member of Lodge No. 25.

SRALLA, of Floresville, Texas, who passed away Monday, December 13, 1982 at the Floresville Nursing Home. She was 83 years, 2 months, and 27 days of age.

Rosary was recited December 14 at the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 15 at 1:30 p.m., followed by a Mass at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Reverend Jeremiah Murphy was the officiating celebrant. Interment was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Floresville.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Larry Sralla, Robert Sralla, Wayne Sralla, Leonard Sralla, Jeffery Sralla, and Timothy Sralla.

Mrs. Sralla was born September 16, 1899 in Williamson County, Texas, the daughter of the late John and Frances Zak. She moved to Wilson County in 1912 with her family. July 19, 1921 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Floresville, she was married to Lukas Sralla. He preceded her in death February 23, 1977.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, the KJZT, and both she and her husband were very faithful SPJST members as long as they were able to attend.

Her survivors include her sons, Henry, Victor and Albert Sralla, all of Floresville; 8 grandchildren; and _5 great-grandchildren.

Brother Rehak, a retired farmer, was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville and SPJST Lodge No. 4. He was born in Lavaca County, August 18, 1912, the son of the late Anton and Mary Mikush Rehak. He was married October 13, 1931 to Mary Rabel in Hallettsville.

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville at 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 15, the Rev. Celestino Say officiated.

Burial was in St. Anthony's Cemetery in the Breslau-Witting Community.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Rehak of Hallettsville; two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Janak of Rockdale and Mrs. Georgia Ludwig of Hallettsville; three brothers, Joe and Anton Rehak of Hallettsville and Bill Rehak of Needville; five sisters, Mrs. Agnes Mikush of Moulton, Mrs. Herbert Pavlicek of Moulton, Mrs. Sophie Melnar and Mrs. Lillie Hermes of Hallettsville, Mrs. Millie Simecek of Moulton; four grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the First United Methodist Church in East Bernard Friday, December 17 at 11 a.m. Reverend Thomas Hill, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of East Bernard, Father H. C. Rachunek of the St. John's Catholic Church of Hungerford, and Mr. Leon Locke of the Church of

Christ of Wharton officiated.

Interment followed in the Boettcher Family Plot of the East Bernard Methodist Cemetery.

A rosary was recited in the chapel of the Crump-Baines Funeral Home Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

Brother Clem was born in East Bernard August 18, 1913, the son of R. B. and Dora Irene Dalrymple Boettcher. He was a graduate of the East Bernard High School and attended the Texas A &M University.

In 1933, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Union State Bank in East Bernard. He wed the former Frances H. Schlick September 26, 1937 in Wharton. Mr. Boettcher was the Chairman of the Board, Union State Bank, the President of Union Motor Company of East Bernard, a charter member of the Wharton Country Club, the East Bernard Lions Club, the Wharton County Youth Rodeo, the Wharton County Cutting Horse Breeders, and the Gulf Coast Cutting Horse Association.

He was a past director of the Florence Nightingale Hospital, the National Cutting Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, and the Texas Bankers Association. He was a director, honorary vice-president, and lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He has been in charge of the Quarter Horse Sale of the Livestock Show since its inception over 25 years ago. The sale for 1983 will be named "The Clem Boettcher Quarter Horse Sale".

He served on the East Bernard Independent School District Board for 18 years, the East Bernard Independent School District Equalization Board for three years and the Wharton County Water and Improvement District Two for three years. Mr. Boettcher was a senior member of Wharton County's Banking Community; a member of the First United Methodist Church of East Bernard, and served as Chairman of the Building Committee for new church construction.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Schlick Boettcher of East Bernard; two sons, Clem W. Boettcher of East Bernard and A. Schlick Boettcher of Houston; one daughter, Ada Prasifka of Wharton; one brother, Col. R. B. Boettcher of Destin, Florida; one sister, Philippa Russek of East Bernard; and seven grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers were W. J. Hlavinka, 0. H. Polk, Thurman Brandes, B. J. Sablatura, Fritz Garrett, Ralph Watson, L. M. Pearce, Jr., and Leroy Bahner.

TRLICA, SR., who passed away Tuesday, December 14, 1982 at 4 a.m. in a Beeville nursing home following a long illness. Brother Trlica was 69 years old.

Brother Trlica was a resident of Bee County most of his life. He was a retired farmer, but still was engaged in ranching.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday at Galloway and Sons Chapel, with the Rev. Dick Bremer officiating. Burial was in the Beeville Memorial Park.

Brother Trlica had been an SPJST member for 51 years, and he had served as a salesman for SPJST Insurance for 25 years. He was president of Lodge 26, Slovan Jihu, as of December 1959 to the day he passed away.

We will all remember Brother Trlica for his many good deeds he had done for our community, our school, and for everyone he knew.

His honesty, friendliness, and love for his family and friends will always be cherished by those who knew him.

He was born in Belton, Texas, and was a retired maintenance foreman for the Texas Department of Highways and Public Transportation. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waco.

Ethnographic Terms Relating to the Czech-Moravian People of Texas

Approximately two hundred million Slavic people live in Eastern Europe, including Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, and Russians. Although all the Slays are closely related to each other in varying degrees through their language and culture, subtle differences exist between the Slays.

Numerous sub-groups exist even within the different Slavic nations. A saying goes that a person traveling in Eastern Europe will encounter a different nation of people every thirty miles. Most regions are fiercely proud of their language, dress, and culture.

The different Slavic languages are similar to each other in that they all offer a great wealth of expression. In the Czech language for example, our English word horse can be translated as kun, konik, and konfeek. Subtle differences exist between these three words however. Ka can denote any horge, but konik can mean a horse which someone is very fond of. Few languages express our human feelings so well as the different Slavic languages.

There is a great variety among the names which the Sla ys apply to themselves. A person from Moravia for example can call himself by at least six names. Each name means that the person is from Moravia, but each name can also connote something else. Below is a list of some of the terms which relate to the Czech-Moravian people of Texas.

ECH, plural CE8I, CECHOVE — This word is of ancient origin.

According to legend, tech was a figure in history who led the ancestors of the modern-day Czech people from their ancient home in the Carpathian‘, mountains to Bohemia.

The word Cech can be translated to English as either Czech or Bohemian.

In the narrower sense of the word, tech denotes an inhabitant of

Bohemia. In a wider sense the word means an inhabitant of Czechoslovakia, an inhabitant of the lands of the former kingdom of Bohemia, or a person of Czech origin.

6ECHOSLOVAN — This word was coined by Czech intellectuals in the 19th century. It is formed from the words tech and Slovan, which translate to English as Czech and Slay. This word was used in the period before the creation of the Republic of Czechoslovakia to denote the Slavic people of the former kingdom of Bohemia. As such the word was applied to the Bohemians, Moravians, Silesians, Lusatian Sorbs, and also to the Slovaks. The Czechs created this term to stress the kinship of these Slavic groups.

HANAK — This word is of Czech origin. It denotes an inhabitant of the region of Halle in central Moravia.

HANAK/pronounced HAH nyahk/ — This word comes from the dialect of eastern Moravia. Haria,k has a slightly derogatory connotation among the Czech-Moravian people of Texas. One explanation for this is that most Czech-Moravian immigrants came from the regions of Lasko and Vala§sko, both located near the region of Han& Hane is a richer, more fertile area than the mountainous regions of Lasko and Vala§sko. Among the CzechMoravians of Texas, a Hanak came to mean someone who is putting on airs or pretending to be a rich farmer from the Halle region. The word Hanak is still heard in Texas and is used as a mild slur.

LACH/pronounced lahkh/BACH — In ancient times this word was sometimes used to describe the people of Poland. Today this word is used by ethnographers to denote someone from the region of La§sko.

Lasko is that part of north-eastern Moravia and south-eastern Silesia near the towns Fren§tait and Fry'dek.

The word has chiefly a geographic connotation and is used to describe the dialect of the region. The people of Lasko seldom refer to themselves by this term, calling themselves instead either Czechs, Moravians, or Poles. The poet Ondra Lysohorsky suggested that the people of Lasko comprise an ethnic group separate from both the Czechs and the Poles.

Lysohorsky created a literary Lachian language which corresponds to the spoken dialect of the region and he wrote using this language. A majority of Moravian immigrants in Texas came from La'Ssko, but most called themselves Moravians.

MORAVAK/pronounced moh RAH vahk/ — This word is used today by the people of south-eastern Silesia to describe an inhabitant of Moravia.

MORAVAN, plural MORAVANThis word is of more recent origin than Moravec. Moravan is commonly used today in Czechoslovakia to denote an inhabitant of Moravia. The word has chiefly a geographic connotation.

MORAVUK -This word comes from the dialect of north-eastern Moravia. It means an inhabitant of Moravia.

VALACH/pronounced VAH lahkh/, plural VALASI — This word is not of Slavic but of Roumanian origin. Valach denotes an inhabitant of the region of Moravian ValaSsko in eastern Moravia. The people of this area are predominately of Slavic origin, but their name comes from the Wallachian people of modern-day Roumania. Certain Roumanian sheep-herders migrated to Moravian Vala'Ssko in the twelth to sixteenth centuries. This small group interbred with the native Slavic population. Certain non-Slavic words of Roumanian origin are still heard in the vocabulary of the people of Moravian ValaSsko.

WEND — This word is not of Slavic origin.

Until recent times the Germans used this term to denote all Slavic peoples.

Wend eventually came to mean a Slavic inhabitant of the region of Lusatia, located today in Eastern Germany. The Wends now have their own schools and cultural organizations in Eastern Germany, where they are officially called Sorbs.

The term Wend is retained in Texas by descendents of these Slavic immigrants.

Citizens of towns and villages in Moravia often applied names to themselves which were derived from the name of their town or village. The following are names of towns in Moravia and Silesia and the name used to denote an inhabitant of that town: FrenStat, FrenStatdan; FrOek, Fry.dean; Chlebovice, Chlebovjan; Palkovice, Palkovjan; Kozlovice, Kozlovjan; Petrovice, Petroviean.

Moravian immigrants in Texas sometimes applied names to themselves derived from the name of their new home. A person from Corn Hill, Texas, for example, was sometimes called a Kornhiljak or Kornhilak.

The term Czech-Moravian is often used in describing Texans who are descended from immigrants born in Moravia. This is possibly the most accurate term we can use to describe these people and their culture. The term Czech is ambiguous. In the Czech language a Czech, is a person who was born in Bohemia. The term Czech-Moravian indicates the Moravian geographical location and the Czech cultural orientation which accurately apply to the so-called Czechs of Texas.

Wilson Manning, clinical health psychologist, Waco.

Rouquette, associate professor for forage physiology, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, Overton; "Report on Animal Health and Growth Product," commercial companies' representatives; and a question and answer session.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
