HOW TRUE!!!

You never tire until you are bored.

You never grow old until you lose your zest for play and work.

Forget the calendar and the mirror.

Keep the requisites of youth: eagerness and curiosity.

Some epitaphs should read — "Died at 30, buried at 60."

Life is change, movement; accept the inevitable and make the best of, it.

"The reason most people age at 50," said Henry Ford, "is that they permit themselves to slump."

The first sign of age is a head that doesn't sit straight and strong upon the shoulders; it is a spirit that languishes.

To correct the first, take physical exercise; to concentrate on the second, think youth.

Imagine yourself young.

Each morning, before an open window, breathe deeply. Plan an adventure for the day, an adventure, perhaps, in learning something new.

Gladstone took up the study of a foreign language when he was past 70.

Three hundred and sixty-five days cannot age you as much as the utterance: "Oh, I'm too'old to begin!"

With the beginning of a new year, we wonder what may be in store for everyone. Looking back, we reflect upon many pleasant, as well as, sad occasions for the year just past and also take note of the dedicated members in the Society.

As a fraternal organization, we must live up to our purpose of giving protection to our •loved ones, our homes, and needy persons.

Fraternalism is facing a new era and we must practice it more. If everyone would grasp and practice that spirit of fraternalism, we would have good will and peace. Unless we, as members of the SPJST Society, make an honest effort to practice real benevolence, humanity and brotherhood to each other, we fail to do our duty as fellow members.

Let us all pause for one minute to reflect the pleasant relations of the year just passed and to think of our friends. Let us also resolve to show more kindness and less criticism and more faith and less doubt in each other during the ensuing year.

Fraternalism is the bond which unites us as citizens of one country.

Our common cause is the protection of our homes, our schools, our churches and others; let us continue to spread that fraternal spirit in 1983! *** I am the old year which will be gone forever. I am the last of a long procession of yesterdays streaming behind you, pouring into mist and obscurity, and then into the ocean of oblivion; I am December 31,1982!

Each day has been a burden of triumph, defeat, laughter, and bitterness. I do not love or hate you I only judge you.

I have no compassion; only Today has that I have no encouragement; only Tomorrow has that

I stand at the door of the past welcoming the single file of days that pass through, watching Tomorrows becoming Todays as they join me. As you grow older, I absorb your thoughts. You turn to me more and more less and less, toward Tomorrow.

My snows cumber your back and whiten your head. My icy waters diminish your passions. My exhaltations dim your hopes. My dead loves, burnt-out enthusiasms, shattered dream-houses, and dissolved illusions, move and surround you.

Tomorrows come unnoticed; Todays slip by unheeded. More and more of you become a creature of my Yesterdays.

I am 1982, made up of the world's Yesterdays. If you know enough to put your feet upon me, you can rise rapidly. But when you let me ride on your back, I strangle and smother you Remember, I am 1982; learn to look me in the face, to use me, and to not be afraid of me. I am not your friend; I am your judge and your fear. Tomorrow is your friend. *** Whenever you are trying to improve your decision-making ability, are you tortured with regret because of faulty decisions or frustrated by the waste of time in "making up your mind?" The following tips in decision-making will help you in this matter: Endeavor to avoid impulsive decisions. Stall for time to think through your problems. Right judgements demand time to learn all possible facts.

Endeavor to also discover all factors in the case. Don't shut your eyes to disagreeable aspects.

Tap every source that might throw light on the situation, and do not substitute other's advice for your own judgement; be sure no important angle is'overlooked.

Calculate the merits of all possible solutions. Imaginatively visualize the chain reaction varying decisions might cause. Judge by long-term results, not just by immediate benefits; also ask: "How will this effect others?"

Then make your own decision.

Sometimes you may still pull a boner, but at least no self-accusation will scourge you for carelessness or for letting another's advice mislead you.

Review former judgements when the same problem recurs. Decisionmaking ability should increase through former experience, wider reading, thorough thinking and human contacts. *** The editor would like to emphasize that jury duty is one of the highest attributes of our American citizenship; this enables the citizen to participate in the administration of justice between men and man and between government and the individual.

Let us just say, that Mr. Wrong and Mr. Right have a lawsuit. They may be strangers to you, and, in a sense, you do not care who wins.

However, as a citizen, you do care; it is very important to you and all the people that there be a way by which disputes can be settled peaceably, and justly.

SPJST Represented In Singing Christmas Tree On December 19th and 20th Temple's Mayborn Civic Center was the home of a living Christmas tree.

A chorus of 100 voices performed musical selections of King of Love Cantata and Hallelujah Chorus.

Ruth Hanusch and Thelma Bartosh, both employees of the home office were members of the all volunteer chorus. The concerts were well attended and we are certainly proud of our employees participation in civic projects such as this. *41*

Lodge 88 Announces Czech Classes Mr. William Souchek, a professor of the Czech language at Alvin Junior College, will teach Czech at Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

Classes will be held on the dates listed below: January 3, 17, 24 and 31 February 7, 21 and 28 March 7, 21 and 28 There will not be any fee for these lessons. Hours will be from 7:30 until 9:30 p.m.

Eastfield

Community College To Teach Czech Czech I lessons will be taught at the Eastfield Community College in Mesquite for 10 weeks from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday nights, beginning January 27, 1983. The tuition will be $35 (Scholarships available).

Czech II lessons will also be taught at the same location for 10 weeks from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday nights, beginning January 27, 1983.

The tuition will be $45 (Scholarship available).

Both locations of the Czech lessons will be taught at Eastfield Community College, N200.

This date conflicts with the Awards Trip scheduled for the SPJST top sales representatives.

Due to the fact that District 5 has (as of this date) eleven (11) of the top thirty sales people, I would respectfully submit that your district would reconsider your meeting date. The trip date is firm and it is beyond my being able to change that date.

VII Director's Report District

Dear Readers: Two recent invitations to attend lodge Christmas socials and meetings within my district have capitulated me into the spirit of this holiday season in a big way!

Saturday, December 18, my family and I attended the December meeting and Christmas social of Lodge No. 185, New Braunfels at the Cibolo Park Clubhouse.

They asked me to install the following officers for 1983: President-Gladys Jasek 1st Vice President-Thomas Matschek 2nd Vice President-Roy Haag Secretary-Dorothy Pape Financial Secretary-Margaret Hrabel Treasurer-Charles Schaundua Youth Leader-Sara Schaundua Noreen Jasek will serve as assistant youth leader.

While the adults socialized and played dominoes, the youth club had its regular meeting. They tied bows on 180 candy canes to be delivered to "River Gardens," a home for the mentally ill, in New Braunfels.

They made plans to go ice-skating December 30th. The District VII YAD will be hosted by this youth club, July 10, 1983 at St. Mary's Hall.

They are also planning a fund-raiser at the Spring district meeting.

Brother Charles Schaundua, outgoing president, conducted a short business meeting.

Members who have not missed a meeting in the year are: Dorothy Pape, Clifford Pape, Gladys Jasek, Theresa Haag, Chris Haag, and April Haag. My congratulations to these faithful members.

A delicious buffet dinner was served to the nice group of about thirty members who attended. My family was grateful to be included in their warm fellowship.

The following day, December 19, we attended the Christmas social and meeting of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio at their lodge meeting place on Gevers Street.

The meeting followed a delicious holiday meal furnished by the lodge with the desserts furnished by the good cooks in the lodge. About sixty people attended the festivities.

Brother Emil Matula, president, conducted the meeting in an efficient manner. A note of interest is that Sister Viola Mazac, financial secretary and treasurer, has missed only two meetings in twenty years; once because of illness, and once because of her father's funeral. This is quite a record!

I was asked to install the following officers for 1983: President-Emil Matula Vice President-Bill Mares Secretary-Dominic Netek Financial Secretary/TreasurerViola Mazac Czech Reporter-Jaro Kleprlik English Reporter-Dominic Netek Flag Bearer-Alfred Kalmus It was noted that Brother Matula's picture was featured in a San Antonio paper as one of 1800 members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association who met December 7th before the Alamo.

This brought forth remembrances of that day in 1941 when many lives were changed. This sharing, once again, showed the patriotism of the members who make up the SPJST. Let us all work to keep this fire alive!

It was a pleasure to meet with old friends and to make new ones at these socials; I welcome these opportunities.

May I conclude with my best wishes to all our readers and members for a new year filled with good health, continued prosperity, and God's special blessing of peace!

Lodge No. 28, East Bernard Meeting Dear Members: Our January meeting WILL NOT be held the first Sunday the 2nd.

This is due to the New Year's Day Holiday. As you may recall, the home rule on meetings states, in

part, that if the first Sunday falls on or within a holiday weekend, the meeting will automatically be held the second Sunday. In this case the second Sunday is the 9th. So, please mark your calendars.

In the annual meeting, the 5th of December, all officers were reelected. More on this meeting in my next communique.

Nezval Gives Report October 31, 1982 Hallettsville Publishing Co. P.O. Box 427, Hallettsville, Texas 77964 Dear Sir: Since the second November issue of the "East Bernard Tribune" falls on the day before "Veterans' Day", this writer wishes to bring forward some old G.I. humor. First off, we cannot just remember our comrades at arms and/or veterans with only somber sadness, when they leave us, but we should remember the good they had done and the legacy of humor they leave us, also. Without humor, this world of ours would be a sad place and we all would end up basket cases.

In W.W. II, they had the "G.I. Joe" and "Willie and Joe" cartoons.

During this writer's time, which was close to the end of the Korean War and after, we could check our daily and/or weekly activities with old "B.B." (Beetle Bailey). It always came out that something close took place within our division. The Vietnam Vets had old "B.B." also and possibly others but this writer does not know for sure. The W.W. I and after had songs, poems, and stories. Many times these were put into a thing called a "Company Joke and Story Book". This writer's father and some comrades at arms placed this entry of mixed usage of and play upon words of the English language. The poem is called — — — `Read it and Weep"

It was midnight on the ocean, Not a street car was in sight.

The sun was shining brightly, For it rained all day that night.

It was a summer night in winter, The snow was raining fast.

A barefoot boy with shoes on, Stood sitting in the grass.

The organ pealed potatoes, Lard was rendered by the choir.

The sexton rang the dish rag, When someone yelled out "FIRE"!

"Holy Smoke!" the parson shouted, In the mad rush lost his hair; Now his head resembles heaven, For there is no parting there.

This was taken from this writer's father's notebook as written "verbatim" and as entered into the "23d Co. C.A.C., the Phillippines" joke book. This was around the year 1919 or 1920. A time when many immigrants joined the service to learn English better and work toward their citizenship.

Last Report For 1982 From Lodge No. 88, Houston

We bow our heads in sorrow as we Greetings feel the loss of our departed Birthday Club Sister Leddie Kadera, who passed away December 16, 1982 at the age of 86 years. Sister Anyone who missed our Leddie Kadera was ailing over four December 11, 1982 Christmas/ months spending time in the Dinner/Dance missed a gala evening Heights Hospital to have surgery of entertainment with everything twice and the past month in the from Santa Claus delivering bags of nursing home where she closed her goodies, to caroling, a delicious eyes forever. Funeral service was dinner and music to dance to held in the Heights Funeral Chapel provided by the Country Boys. Saturday, December 18 at 1 p.m., There was truly something for with Rev. Henry Reseda and Rev. Robert Chupik officiating. everyone.

Retiring officers were presented Lodge No. 88. We express our plaques and premium refund checks sincere sympathy to the surviving family of our departed Sister Leddie were passed out.

Plan to attend our January 13, Kadera. May she rest in peace.

Saturday, December 18 was such 1983 lodge meeting. a beautiful day when our Choral Respectfully submitted: Club visited with the guests at the Kay Lynn Kovar S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Recording Secretary/ Needville. About 25 of our club Reporter members were able to go and -SPJSTperform for the guests with Czech and English carols and some of our "Happy New Year" familiar Czech folk songs. It was a pleasure to see them join us with the songs they knew. We all came dressed in our Czech costumes. One year we came not wearing them and they were disappointed and hoped we will have them on every time we come. This, we obliged with pleasure.

them; some work full-time and some part-time, but they all are very devoted workers and efficient. My childhood friend, Mrs. Louise Janca is a resident for several years and is now in the wheelchair; it is a pleasure to chat with her; she has good humor and is a lot of fun. Her daughter, Louise Newman, was there visiting her mother. My sisterin-law, Janie Dvorak, will be there close to two years now but mostly in a wheelchair and bed. I was surprised to see Mrs. Hlavaty; she amazed me — 96 years of age and, with a walker, she does very well.

She is the wife of our late Frank Hlavaty who was the founder of the Choral Club in the early days. Mrs. Mary Faltesek looks quite well. Mrs. Ida Hanka resides in the home again and enjoyed a visit by her grandson, Glenn, and wife, Wendy, and, especially, the lively great-granddaughter Jeanette. She also enjoyed the visit of her devoted daughter-inlaw, Pearl Hanka. She has two other grandsons, Bruce, married to Karen and they have Erin and Kristin and that makes it three great-granddaughters, and the third grandson, Brett, is still an eligible bachelor.

District V Rest Homes Director J. Nowotny graciously thanked us for our performance and extended an invitation for the future, which we gladly accepted. Our Choral Club Director Tim Kostom was with us and feeling good, but asked Helen Hegwood to direct the group which she gladly did. We all wish to thank the ladies for their hospitality and a nice friendly-spent afternoon.

Saturday, December 18 really was a gala night at Lodge No. 88, our guests were entertained by Al Pierson's Big Band USA and the Chandelier Ballroom was an array of beautifully-dressed ladies bringing out the holiday season. The dance was a complete sellout, and in charge of the dance were Palmae Hilsher, her husband, John, and Royal Warnasch taking care of reservations. Franklin Bravenec was in the cloakroom while, smiling and greeting the guests at the door, were Laura Warnasch and Almeda Bravenec. All three sisters were beautifully dressed.

Czech will be taught by Professor William Souchek at Lodge No. 88 on Beall Street, beginning Monday, January 3rd from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. every Monday for ten weeks; there will be no charge for these lessons. If you want a good teacher you will find him in Professor Souchek; he makes learning a pleasure.

The kitchen is open at 6:15 p.m.

Thursday nights for the benefit of our social night visitors; come early and enjoy a ROZNOVSKY HAMBURGER before the game; they are delicious! Try and see for yourself.

Lodge 107, Floresville Elects Officers The sun came out for the first time in two weeks so all Lodge 107 members packed their covered dishes and came out to the hall for our Christmas social and meeting; all were ready to get out of the house and go somewhere, and so the December meeting of Lodge 107 enjoyed the largest gathering of members we had seen in a long time.

The barbecue was delicious and the various foods, the ladies had dreamed up to accompany the meat, were numerous and tasty.

Everyone enjoyed the companionship of other members and the fraternalism shown was wonderful to see.

At 2 p.m. President Bayer called the meeting to order and opened the meeting with the Pledge to the flag.

Vice President John Burleson did not answer the roll call, however, he did come in later. All other officers were present.

Minutes were read and reports from the treasurer and financial secretary were read and approved as read.

Brother Emil Merecka, who was reported ill at the last meeting, had passed away. We will miss Brother Emil because he was always there to play dominoes before and after the meeting. May God rest his soul.

Sophie Sralla had been very ill for a long time and she passed away since our last meeting. May she have eternal rest in Christ.

Lodge 107 has gained six new members: namely, Robert Reed, Garvan Reed, Matthew Polasek, Mary Svoboda, Nicole Pruski and Neil Pruski. We wish all of them well and hope they enjoy their membership with us.

District VII Director Thelma and her husband, Eugene Hrncir, visited with us. Sister Hrncir made a few remarks about various programs within the Society. She commented on the Annuity and also about the Scholarship Program. She encouraged our lodge to support local activities and charity projects.

She also stated some money was available for real estate loans in our district.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer gave the youth club report. The hayride was frozen out again; seems like this happens to our youth clubbers very often, however, they did have their party and at their meeting each youth made an ornament to take home and put on their own Christmas tree.

President Bayer announced that new windows for the hall are to be delivered in the near future. This will certainly improve the appearance of our hall.

Jerry Bayer is to get information on a water filter for the hall, this shall improve our water situation.

President Bayer gave a financial report on the general fund.

Before the meeting a free barbecue beef meal was served to some 250 people. Christmas centerpieces decorated St. Ambrose Hall in Wall for this occasion.

Each year for the last 12 years a newsletter has been sent to all members to announce the time and place of the annual meeting. It also informs the members of what has been going on in the lodge during the past year. This is very beneficial to those members who live too far away to attend any of the meetings.

Sister Karen Cathey exhibited a trophy won by her soccer team which is sponsored by Lodge 180.

Latest Flashes From Lodge 183 Dear Members, Just a short letter this week, because I have been out of touch for a week; I have been in the hospital with an infected finger, (a combination sting from fire ants, a bite from a brown spider, and then a secondary infection in which I almost lost my finger), but I am out of the hospital now and will try to get back into the swing of things, again.

I wish to remind everyone about the New Year's Eve dance and party; be sure to be there and bring your friends. There will be a breakfast after 1:00 a.m. New Year's Day and $7.50 a person covers everything, you can't beat that.

Dear Readers and Members: Quite often I hear a remark: "Why do we have a library?" no one reads books anymore — so I checked out our loan cards and find that, at this writing, we have 423 books on loan to our readers. It is surprising, isn't it? that many people are still reading books!

Now I want to report to you what we have in our library. We have over 16,000 Czech books on every imaginable subject you can think of.

Would you like a book on medical treatment? A Technical book? An educational book? A historical book?

An agricultural book or just a plain story book? We have them all and the terms are as follows: if you come after the books and bring them back, there is NO CHARGE, if we have to mail them to you, you pay the postage both ways which is the lowest postage available. You can have the books up to 60 days; if you need more time, drop us a card and we will gladly extend your time.

Now, in the English language department, we have a very complete Medical section, Agricultural section, Historical section, Genealogy section, Educational Section and just about anything else; we loan them to you on the same terms. We will be happy to send a list of our books on request.

We also have room for many more books; if you have old books that are gathering dust just bring or send them to us in any condition and we will enter your name in our golden book where it will remain forever and your books will be cared for forever, now isn't that better than throwing them away?

Friendship Club of Fort. Worth Dear Members and Friends, The December meeting was wellattended, and everyone was in a jovial mood. The delicious meal, exchange of gifts and games were enjoyed by everyone.

The officers for 1983 are: President-Mary Tesar, VicePresident-Rose Steinman, Secretary-Lydia Alholm, TreasurerMary Tesar and Reporter-Lydia Alholm.

The birthday members were John Zubb, Mary Kubala and Mary Tesar.

If it is icy and cold we will not have a meeting in January.

Hostesses will be Rose Steinman and Carrie Milan, if the present beautiful weather carries over into next month.

A menu was not planned at the last meeting, but the members are asked to bring a hot covered dish to the January 5th meeting.

Several members and a host of friends from Ft. Worth danced to the music by the Jim Bochnicek Orch. from Omaha, Nebraska, November 19th at the KC Hall in Ennis. The Ennis Polka Club sponsored this great band and we thank Pat and Raymond Zapletal for making it possible for all to have a lovely evening. We are now looking forward to the last weekend in February, when Ernie Kucera from Nebraska will make a three-day stay in Ennis.

Since I was more or less in charge of the pastry December 5th at Lodge No. 92 with. Lodges 154, 180 and 183 Christmas Party, I would like to thank all the ladies and gentlemen who brought pastry. A special thank you to Mrs. Marie Janecka of Lodge No. 66 who brought the delicious apple strudel. Louis Kubala reported that he was up at 5 a.m. to bake two pecan pies to get them to the lodge in time. I bet his wife, Mary, has a different story.

Member, Mary Ann Krivanek, and her Kitchen Committee are deserving of much praise for the long hours of food planning and preparation.

The Christmas motif, under the care of Martha Durham was beautifully arranged, even though her mother, Mrs. Mary Hubenak was in the hospital at the time. We are glad to report that Mrs. Hubenak is out of the hospital now and was able to attend the Lodge No. 92 Christmas Party.

I would like to thank Editor Rudy Sefcik for always being prompt in getting my letters printed. I continue to hear how much the readers of the Vestnik look forward to the weekly issue. Out-of-state readers, Jack and Flora (Korteff) Ryder of Morro Bay, Calif., Frank and Lillian (Moravec) Maziarz of O'Fallon, Ill. and my own family in Glen Ellyn, Ill. are only a sample of who look forward to the Texas news.

We were saddened to hear that Flora Ryder has been in the hospital in California. We hope that her recovery will be soon.

We express sincere sympathy to the John Murphy family for the loss of his sister, Mrs. Lillian Waco, who passed away December 18th and to the families of Mr. Alex M. Bunker, who passed away December 20th.

Choral Club News

The Seaton Choral Club met in a regular singing session Tuesday night at Seaton Star Hall. Their attendance was diminished; the busy season of the year took its toll of the members. Those present were Otto Hanus, Dorothy Morris, Agnes Schiller, Martha Klusacek, Anne Krcha, Laverne Vanicek, Bob and Mary Vasicek, Frank and Elonora Spanhel, Dorothy and Jerry Pechal, Emily Stuteville, Helen and Henry Janacek, (our accompanist) and Annie Jakubec (our song leader).

Jerry Urubek was our guest.

Mrs. Dorothy Morris, president, conducted the business meeting which followed the singing. The club voted to suspend rehearsals until February 22, 1983. It was with real regret that the club accepted the resignation of Henry Janacek as our accordionist.

The Club Christmas party was held in the lovely home of Bob and Mary Vasicek, who were very gracious hosts. Thank you.

Still, it is important to you, as a citizen, that the laws be so enforced as to punish and discourage crime in order that you may be safe in your person, property And rights. It is equally as important to you that no innocent person should be sent to a punishable institution.

For those of you who have never served on a jury, here are some suggestions: Keep yourself away from all persons, except other jurors. This means you should not mingle nor talk to the lawyers, witnesses, parties, nor the judge, even though the discussion is wholly unrelated to the trial.

Never discuss the case nor permit others to mention it to you or in your presence during the trial. If anyone insists upon talking about the case after you have explained to him that you are a juror and must not listen, report the matter to the judge immediately.

Never commence your deliberations until you have heard all the evidence from both sides, the argument of the lawyers, and the court's charge. You should not mention the case, except in the jury room, when all other jurors are present.

Never mention or discuss your own personal experience or any knowledge that you may have of similar transactions. If you should disclose such information to others serving on a jury, the court would have to grant a new trial.

When in doubt, ask the judge. If you are in doubt about your rights or duties as a juror, you should not ask anyone but the judge for information.

Dear Members: The Holiday Season is here and another New Year is about to begin.

This is an excellent time to encourage your children to become more active in their youth clubs.

There are only 5 months left in this youth year but there is still time to earn points to compete in the SPJST Points Contest. Each youth must earn a minimum of 600 points in order to qualify. Those youth who have a total of 1000 points or more will be eligible to compete for the Top Ten Outstanding Youth Of The SPJST. Also, remember that a youth must have attended a majority of youth club meetings, a majority of youth club activities, and be a full-right member on or before the previous October 31st in order to be eligible to attend camp and participate in YAD. What other place is there for our children to attend supervised activities with a well balanced program socially and educationally, all for the low cost of an insurance premium? Many times the money a youth earns at a District YAD will more than pay for their insurance.

In comparing the cost of a child to attend a camp for 7 days, the average cost per child is $125.00.

Our young people attend the SPJST camps free if they attend a majority of the meetings and activities during the youth year.

When we weigh the advantages that the youth club has to offer in comparison to any inconveniences it may be to the parents, such as transportation expense and making sure that the children are on time to all the meetings and activities, we should see that the benefits the youth club has to offer are much more in comparison.

In speaking with older youth club members or young adults who are no longer in the youth club, they all express how they appreciated the opportunity to experience the leadership roles and the opportunity to express their opinions, thoughts and feelings., As we reflect on memories of the past and place trust in the future we as leaders can guide our youth to grow in personal development by giving them the opportunity to display their creativeness, talent and knowledge. Giving them new experiences, new and different responsibilities or challenges will have them striving to do their best, improve self-respect, attitudes, values and beliefs.

The New Year is here and I hope all of us will make a resolution to support the SPJST with your attendance and interest and

encourage your children to be active members.

As you see by this quarterly report the various holidays have had their effect on the youth club meetings Some of the youth clubs failed to make a report, but I am sure we will hear from them in the future.

Spring will be here before we know it and that means a busy time ahead for the Youth Department.

While youth work as such is in the usual "off' season, there is much planning work to be done for the coming year and that's what we're in the middle of.

Take a good look at the following report and ask yourself if there is any way you can help. The Youth Program needs the support of everyone. We have a lot to offer and if the youth are not there they are missing something and we are missing having them with us.

May the Holiday Season bring each of you Good Health and Happiness for the coming year.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Stefanik Lodge No. 142 in Houston, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed longtime lodge sister PAULINE MARIE WALLA, of Houston, who died October 24, 1982 in the Spring Branch Memorial Hospital at the age of 92.

Sister Walla was born in Havlicku Brod in Czechoslovakia 30 June 1890. In 1906, at the early age of 16, she came to America along with a sister-in-law, age 18 and a friend, age 17. Their boat landed in Galveston, Texas and from there she traveled to Taylor, Texas where she joined August Walla, who came to America from Vsetin, Czechoslovakia earlier in the same year. They were married 26 November 1906 in Taylor, Texas and in the year of 1918 they moved to Houston, Texas.

In 1956 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Sister Walla became a member of SPJST Lodge Praha No. 29 in Taylor at the age of 22, and before her death she held her membership at Lodge 142, Houston.

Survivors include three daughters, Lydia Irene Walla, Jessie Mae Winkler and Louise Johanna Riley; one son, August Walla, Jr.; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews in Czechoslovakia and Austria.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1959.

At Sister Pauline Walla's request, there were no services. She was cremated.

Resolution Committee: Alice Jochen Rosie Tumis Patricia Schleider -SPJSTEXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone, wish to express our deepest sympathy, on behalf of our officers and entire membership, to the bereaved family of ROY J. STERMER, age 57, who passed away Friday, December 17, 1982, in a Temple hospital after a brief illness.

Brother Stermer was a Westphalia native. He was a World War II veteran and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Brother Stermer was a member of the Westphalia post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors are his widow, Georgia M. Stermer of Cyclone; five sons, Willie Roy Stermer of Temple, A. J. Stermer of Belton, Lawrence Stermer of Bryan, Andrew Stermer of Cameron and Patrick Stermer of Cyclone; three daughters, Marie Doskocil of Rogers, Kathrine Lenart of Temple and Carol Stermer of Cyclone; his father, Andrew Stermer of Rosebud; a sister, Viola Bartek of Oenaville; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone with the Rev. Clyde Holtman officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Cyclone.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Saturday, December 18, at Hoelscher Funeral Home in Rosebud.

May our departed lodge brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

IN MEMORIAM Graveside services for Joe M. Pokorny, 73, of 401 N.W. 4th Street, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 28, 1982 at Woodland Park Cemetery with Rev. John Nagle officiating. Mineral Wells Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Brother Pokorny died Monday, October 25 at 11:50 a.m. Born in Rowena, Texas 18 January 1909, he had lived in Mineral Wells, Texas since 1960.

He was a member of SPJST

Lodge No. 49 in Rowena.

He was a laborer for Can-Tex Industries and a veteran of WWII, serving with the U.S. Army. His wife, the former Mariann Raebe, preceded him in death April 19, 1981, they were married in 1953 at Ballinger, Texas.

Survivors include two brothers, Louis Pokorny of San Angelo and Victor Pokorny of Wichita Falls; a sister, Millie Lukastik of San Angelo; four nieces, Georgia Plagens, Virginia Woehl, Janelle Shockley and Doris Jackson; two nephews, Wilbert Pokorny and Howard Allewine.

One sister, Amaile Allewine, preceded him in death; also, one brother, Willie Pokorny, died in 1977.

May he rest in peace.

Senator John Sharp

Longtime SPJST Member Elected To The State Senate State Senator John Sharp recently won election to a full term in the Texas Senate, representing Senatorial District No. 18, a district in southeast Texas comprised of 18 counties. Senator Sharp had previously won in a special election to serve the remaining two months of the late Senator John Wilson's former term.

Senator Sharp captured almost 64% of the vote in unofficial complete returns from the special election of December 15th. He will take his place in the Texas Senate in the opening session of the 68th Legislature which will convene in early January 1983. Senator Sharp is a lifetime member of Lodge No. 97 in Placedo, Victoria County. He had previously represented Calhoun and Victoria Counties as a State Representative for four years and was named "Outstanding Freshman Legislator" in 1979. In the House his major accomplishments have been in the areas of agriculture, small business, education and senior citizens. Senator Sharp is a charter member of the South Texas Czech Heritage Society. His parents are Mr. & Mrs. M. L. Sharp of Placedo.

His mother's maiden name was Venus Marek, and his grandparents were the late John and Rosie Marek.

His grandmother was an Esterak.

He and his wife Charlotte have a 3year old son, Spencer. Senator Sharp, having been a member of the

Czechoslovakia ...

Everyone is aware of modern Czechoslovakia as it figures today, but many would be at a loss if asked about the origins and the history of this state. Our schools, unfortunately, have little time or inclination to bother with the smaller nations and, consequently, only an expert on history is likely to know very much about the past and the cultural achievements of the Czechs and Slovaks.

After World War 1, Czechoslovakia was created by the union of Bohemia with Slovakia. Both areas had belonged to the Hapsburg empire from 1526 onwards, but they had lived different lives; Bohemia had been united with Austria under King Vaclav, while Slovakia was one of the lands of King Stefan of Hungary. In spite of the kinship of the two West Slav people, separation over a period of centuries naturally tended to accentuate the differences in language, internal organization and ways of living.

The Great Moravian Empire first united Czechs and Slovaks, for a short space of time, toward the end of the ninth century, but its fate was sealed when the Hungarians invaded the Carpathian basin. The establishment of the Kingdom of Hungary was to force a wedge between the North and the South Sla y s, and was to separate the destinies of Czechs and Slovaks for

some nine hundred years. Slovakia became part of Hungary, which meant that contacts between Bohemia and Southeast Europe were greatly reduced.

Czech history, as the great historian Frantisek Palacky pointed out in the last century, was henceforward restricted "to exchanges with the Germans, i.e., to the assumption or rejection of German ways of living by the Czechs." Palacky, therefore, saw the historical function of his people as "providing a bridge between the Germans and Czechs - between Eastern and Western Europe in general." King Vaclav I, whose equestrian statue adorns the famous square that bears his name in Prague, (Wenceslaus Square) was one of the first great rulers who sought to follow this policy of understanding and adjustment with his neighbors in the West.

The Premysl dynasty that ruled in Bohemia, and soon extended its way to Moravia, was of royal and electoral standing and maintained lively contacts with the German Empire. Foreign merchants and craftsmen, whom the rulers called into the country, mingled with the natives and brought prosperity to Bohemia. In Karel IV, (Charles IV) (1346-1378), the country had a King who was at the same time German Emperor and made Prague the capital of the Holy Roman Empire.

That was the golden age of Prague and Bohemia - Charles gave his name to the University, to a splendid bridge, to Karlstejn (Karluv Tyn) and to Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary). But Charles had no successor to continue his work.

Bohemia had, in Jan Hus, (who was burned at the stake) an early reformer who rated the individual conscience above church doctrine a hundred years before Luther, but the Hussite wars brought the land a great deal of suffering. Bohemia was later open to the Reformation, and this was in a sense to be its fate. The Catholic Hapsburgs staked their hopes on the Counter-Revolution. In 1620 the decisive battle was fought on White Mountain near Prague.

Bohemia's political, economic and religious freedom was lost for 300 years. Some 30,000 Protestant families now emigrated, among them the later world-famous educator, Jan Amos Komensky.

New Year Customs Throughout the World New Year traditions are universal, although there may be calendar variations or differences in the race and creed of the observants.

The Chinese, for example, believe in getting the New Year off to a good start by paying up all their debts on New Year's Eve. The English claim it is a good idea to start a savings account January 1st, since what you do on New Year's Day is indicative of what the

ensuing year will be like. A round loaf of bread dipped in honey symbolizes Jewish hopes for a smooth (the roundness of the bread) and prosperous (the honey) New Year.

The same spirit of hospitality and sociability that makes the Wassail Bowl such a success in Scotland prompts Armenian housewives of Persia to get up early on New Year's Day and set about baking the traditional New Year cakes.

The baking must be done early for the New Year is the day for visiting and entertaining.

New Year's Once Spring Celebration The celebration of the New Year was once a spring affair in Egypt and Rome. Ancient Egypt used the overflowing of the Nile as a calendar and celebrated the New Year accordingly. The Babylonians began their New Year in March, and the early Romans followed the Babylonians' pattern.

Bearing this in mind, the custom of invoking the gods of fertility at New Year's time — the origin of which is lost in antiquity — seems logical and appropriate.

The Romans were accustomed to hanging tiny masks of Bacchus upon trees and vines, the idea being to impart fertility to every side of the tree to which the masks were turned by the wind.

In the old days Roman youths went from house to house singing and wishing everyone a prosperous New Year.

Scottish lads always had a howling good time going about on New Year's Eve switching the trunks of trees and petitioning a "good, howling crop."

Reflecting the fear of starvation, peasant families in various parts of the world baked a special New Year's cake which they dashed against the door; members of the household hastened to pick up a piece and eat it, prayerful that neither hunger nor want should enter the house during the ensuing year. ***

Used Candles Can Be Re-Made Odds and ends of partly burned candles can be used to make a big, long-burning holiday candle.

Melt the candles and remold them in an ice-cream carton, oatmeal container, or something with an interesting shape. Wick can be purchased or plain cord can be used.

When the wax is beginning to harden, tie the wick to a pencil and suspend it in the wax.

Let set hard, remove the carton, and there is a nice candle for your table.

Be sure, however, that you burn the candle safely. While it is pretty and attractive and adds to your holiday decorations, it is also a potential fire hazard.

The First Footer Probably one of the most widespread of the early New Year's superstitions concerned the "first footer," the first person to cross the threshold on New Year morning.

Women and light-haired men were considered unlucky "first footers," as were people who walked pigeontoed.

In some villages the superstition was taken so seriously that a darkhaired man was given the job of acting as first-footer. Going from house to house, he would be first to cross over the threshold, thus preserving the good fortune of the community.

Anglo-Saxons, believing that something might happen when the New Year burst in, often climbed upon the roof on the New Year's Eve so as to have a good view of any such event.

Modern people manage to make plenty of noise, perhaps because our primitive ancestors believed that noise would keep evil influences at a distance.

A recent broadcast sponsored by the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and The Prudential Insurance Company volunteered specific steps parents can take to prevent their children from inhaling foreign objects.

Dr. Russell Asnes, a pediatrician at the Columbia Medical School, says youngsters with strong "oral tendencies" may swallow objects like buttons, tacks or coins which parents leave around the house. Plastic toys which can be disassembled also present special dangers, since children may swallow or choke on the smaller parts.

Dr. Asnes says parents minimize risk from small objects by making the home as safe as possible. "A major part of being a parent involves being on constant watch for ingestions, not only of small objects and toys, but also of household items such as cleaning fluids and medications," says Dr. Asnes.

Parents should also be aware that ordinary foods, particularly peanuts, can be sucked into the windpipe or lungs by young children.

Dr. Asnes says the Heimlich Maneuver is the most effective procedure to dislodge a foreign object from the windpipe. "In the Heimlich Maneuver, one places his hands around the child, forming a fist beneath the breastbone, and presses quickly and firmly in an upward action to remove the object," explains Dr. Asnes.

Dr. Asnes says x-rays are often necessary to confirm whether an object has been inhaled into the lungs or breathing passages.

The Concept The heat pump concept, notes General Electric Company, the number I manufacturer of home heat pump systems, may be new to many consumers. But, it is not new in the heating and air conditioning industry. Basically, a heat pump is a central air conditioner that can both heat and cool your home. In summer it takes heat from inside the home and transfers it to the outside air. In winter, the cycle reverses, and heat from the outdoor air is transferred inside the home.

Because heat pumps only move heat from place to place

without burning fuel to produce the heat, these systems are highly efficient. With fuel costs rising yearly, this makes heat pumps especially attractive.

If your existing oil or gas furnace is still in good condition, but you still want to take advantage of the savings from heat pump efficiency, conskier an add-on heat pump.

An add-on heat pump, such as General Electric's Plus One' system, operates in conjunction with an existing gas- or oil-fired furnace.

With the GE Plus-One" system, the heat pump does the job as long as it can efficiently keep the indoor temperature at the desired level.

When the temperature drops to levels where heat pumps have to work harder to raise indoor temperatures, the system automatically switches over to the existing furnace.

The result is economical operation and a reduced dependence on expensive gas or oil.

Don't Throw Away Waste Heat

For economical operation, doesn't make sense in the summer to have a central air conditioner or heat pump take heat from inside the home and just "throw it away."

One residential heat recovery unit that turns this waste heat from a heat pump into a source for heating household water is the GE Hot Water Bank.

With a one- to five-ton heat pump system, the Hot Water Bank can produce more than 9 gallons of hot water per ton of rated cooling capacity. For example, a heat pump rated at five tons of cooling capacity can provide 46 gallons of hot water for each hour the unit's compressor operates.

Part of the heat moved by the heat pump is reclaimed with two concentric pipes.

NeZ pfece je tu ve svete je gte jeden nazev podobny — nemecke Weihnachten, tj. (za)svecene noci.

Nemohla by tu byt s vanocemi nejaka spojitost? — A vskutku, ji davno se nepochybuje o tom, k v prinade slova vanoce jde o prastarou sousedskou vypfljeku z pfivodniho staronemeckeho winnahten. Novoroenf Kalendy byly ovtem v roce nejyyznamnejti, doprovazely je bujne slavnosti u ve staroveku. Na ge koledy (hlaskove z kalend naprosto Verne odvozene), pak znamenaly pdvodne zejmena magicke obtadni pisne (Zadajfci nap. o hojnou drodu, prospech a zdravi), potom i samo "koledov gni" a dary "kolednikfn".

Spolu s hody a hodovanim to nejak ve od ptivodu path zejmena prave k dobe velkeho slunovratu, k dobe vanoeni a novoroeni. Ne'Z 0 vlastnich slovanskYch, od nikoho nevynajeenych hodech a hudkach, hodinach a hodinkach, snad aZ to jednou piijde vhod, tj. v pravy eas.

Vaclav Suk Stare pilslovf pravf - "Co Cech - to muzikant" - a tak nenf divu, ie se jrneny eeskYch hudebnikri se setkavame po celem svete. Pati-f mezi ne i dirigent Velkeho divadla v Moskve Vaclav Suk, od jehoi pf-fchodu do Moskvy uplynulo letos 101 let.

Vdclav Suk se narodil na Kladne 16. listopadu 1861 a po absolvovanf praiske konzervatoi-e, kde studoval hru na housle, zfskal roku 1880 angairnd u kyjevske opernf skupiny.

Po dvou letech pf-e§el jako prvni houslista do orchestru Velkeho divadla v Moskve, odkud roku 1885 odchazi aby se stal dirigentem opery v Charkove.

To byl poedtek jeho obdivuhodne umelecke drahy za dirigentskym pultem, kterd trvala bezmdla 50 let a jejfm2 vyvrcholenfm bylo prisobenf ye Velkem divadle v Moskve. Sukova talentu si pov gml u v zaeatcfch jeho dirigentske einnosti slavny rusky skladatel P.I. Jako operni dirigent, usilujici o pine umelecke vyzneni dila, nemel Vaclav Suk v tehdej§ich provincialnich divadlech na ratich ustlano, nebot'' je po strance finaneniho zabezpeeeni velmi nadladny tanr.

Roku 1906 se Sukovi koneene podatilo pfekonat byrokratismus carskych litada i pletichy divadelniho Je pkijat do Velkeho divadla v Moskve a 3. fijna poprve diriguje na novem pfisobi§ti Verdiho "Aidu". Jeho tivotni elan se zdal byt nevyeerpatelny. V roce 1925 udelila sovetska. vlada Vaclavu Sukovi za jeho celotivotni zasluhy eestny titul narodniho umelce RSFSR. Tao pocty si Suk nesmirne \Tail a s je§te vet§i chuff se pustil do dal§i prate, i kdy byl vane nemocen.

The items touched on concern some of the most often-made mistakes by some of our Czech correspondents. Use of capital letters: There is a

difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English. Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1968.

Consequently, days of the week and month are NOT capitalized. NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is, names of person, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations), titles of books, films, etc. take capitals: Ex.: Karel Dvotak, Wilsonovo nadrati, Dunaj, Anglican, Cechy, Smetanova opera, "Prodana nevesta", etc., and Na§e kimsko-katolicka cirkev; Velika slovanska podporujici jednota.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE — FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR — INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vam, WS; Ty, Tvfij, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person.

WRONG: Vy, (1 person) jste veera jeli do mesta. RIGHT: Vy jste veera jel do mesta. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.

The pronoun ja. is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality.

(This IS done in English). Ex.: Mam eeskou tenth (I have a Czech wife).

•znamenko (-) One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas.

Commas are used before and after a relative clause: Ztratil jsem knihu, kterou mi dal.

—before and after a noun clause: Je dobi-e, ze tomu rozumi§.

—before and after an adjective clause: V§echen cukr, v§echna kaara.

—before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile me uvidel, §el prye.

Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec tekl synovi: "Pracuj a ue se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation.

Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the US is to use the standard English quotation marks —

A 1977 law authorizes the Defense Department to grant veteran status to certain categories of civilians who served the country in wartime. So far, nine groups have received.

Another 37 categories have had their appeals for recognition turned down. * ** The nine designated categories, all from World Wars I and II, are Women's Airforces Service Pilots; Signal Corps female telephone operators in WWI; Engineer field clerks in WWI; Women's Auxiliary Army Corps; Quartermaster Corps female clerical employees serving in the Allied Expeditionary Force. * ** Also, civilian employees, Pacific Naval Air Bases, stationed on Wake Island at the outbreak of WWII who actively participated in the defense of Wake Island; reconstruction aides and dieticians in WWI; male civilian ferry pilots; and Wake Island defenders from Guam.

HUD Now Advocates Greater Use of Mobile Manufactured Homes

By Lisa Drake Consumer Affairs Advisor Manufactured Housing Institute A recently released U.S. General Accounting Office report singles out the mobile/ manufactured home as a prime example Of the use of innovative technology in reducing the cost of housing. The same report reviews the federal government's habitual indifference to the development and encouragement of these innovative (factory)) home building techniques.

For years the Manufactured Housing Institute has tried to persuade the Department of Housing and Urban Development - the nation's top housing agency - to advocate the use of manufactured home building as the logical answer to America's worsening housing crisis. In vain.

HUD's lack of enthusiasm for manufactured housing was ironical since today's mobile/ manufactured h ome is the only form of residential housing that is built to a stringent set of federally preemptive regulations, enforced by you guessed it! - HUD. Fortunately for America's thousands of frustrated wouldbe home owners HUD seems to have undergone a change of heart. Shortly after taking office, HUD Under Secretary Donald I. Hovde declared: "Manufactured homes will play an important role in the Administration's housing policy, especially since they constitute a free enterprise solution to the acute problem of housing affordability!"
