"Merry Christmas" Expressed In Many Foreign Languages Our modern jet age reduces longdistance miles to minutes and it is not uncommon to hear of someone having breakfast in Czechoslovakia and lunch in Germany.

One can be assured, moreover, that anywhere you go in this world, the spirit of Christmas exists. Holiday greetings, when offered with sincerity, are understood instantly, no matter what the language. Some of the few ways to express "Merry Christmas" to individuals hi foreign lands are: Vesele Vanoce Czech German . . S Rojdestvom Xristovym Feliz Navidad Spanish God Jul Swedish Nadolig LLawen Welsh Members and readers for the last 12 or so years we have been sending Christmas cards to all the lodges at this time of the year, however, we have decided to donate the cost of the cards and postage to the SPJST Scholarship Fund and have done so; we feel that this is money for a very good cause and feel and hope our membership and lodges will understand our consideration.

From the editor and his family, permit us to extend our Best Wishes for the Holiday Season, and we wish for all mankind the great gifts of peace, joy, and happiness. May your spirits be uplifted, and your hearts filled with good health and contentment, as we cherish anew the glorious message and meaning of Christmas. For the confidence and loyalty of those whom we are privileged to serve, we wish to express deepest gratitude! May your future hold the best of everything!

While observing people shopping in the larger shopping centers, a person realizes that the Christmas season is not just for children;

moreover, it should be an occasion for every generation. True, if there are small children in the family, holiday events focus on them, and this is only fitting. But this also is a time for remembering and for linking the past to the present and the future.

The holidays are a time for children to delight in what it was like in the olden days, when their grandparents were children themselves. This is the time, too, for grandparents to enjoy that very special pleasure of indulging their grandchildren.

In some instances, parents probably think the grandparents are too extravagant, that they give presents the parents cannot afford.

Naturally, this makes young parents resentful. Jealousy, too, sometimes surfaces, as parents recall, "they never gave me such expensive gifts." Parents should try to be understanding, to permit their own parents the pleasure of being openhanded with the grandchildren. Let your parents have the pleasure of being extravagant if that makes their holidays more joyous, and enjoy the pleasure your children derive from their grandparents' generosity.

All that is needed is common sense on both sides. A grandmother should not, for instance, decide that the time has come for "Sister" to have a bicycle, unless the idea has her parents' approval. Such a major gift, involving safety as well as expense, should be discussed beforehand with the parents.

On the other hand, if a grandfather yearns to teach his grandchildren to fish and gives them costly tackle, rejoice in the friendship and communion that may result between the generations.

The holidays may provide children, who live far from their grandparents, with one of the few opportunities they have to really learn and know one another. They may be able to share their thoughts with them, to discover that they can have fun with them, to learn from them and to play with them. The holidays are not just a time for exchanging gifts; they are times for family closeness, for the renewing of traditions and for the sharing of memories that will last a lifetime.

The true gifts will each be a golden memory: the one that costs the least but will mean the most. *** Some people have a year-round Christmas in that there are five towns or settlements in the United States that are named "Christmas;" they are located in Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee.

There is a Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean, that is south of Java and attached to the Singapore settlement, under Australian administration.

The British also have two Christmas Islands: one of the Line Islands, in the center of the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii and another in Nova Scotia, on the Atlantic Ocean.

The U.S. "Christmas" towns are apparently swamped with Christmas mail because many people want a Christmas postmark on their cards, letters and packages.

From the President's Office Our Christmas And New Year's Message The Supreme Lodge's annual and traditional Christmas and New Year's greeting appears again on the front page of this issue. This is a long-standing tradition. Just as last year, we have decided to omit the practice of every department of the Home Office sending out greetings to lodge officers and persons in their respective administrative areas. We will still be sending Christmas greetings to individual lodges and these were dispatched some time ago, but perhaps not in time for some of the lodge meetings. We hope those lodges will accept our greeting on this week's cover in that spirit.

The President's Annual New Year's Message and Report will be in the Vestnik issue of January 5th, 1983.

District VII Director's Report Dear Readers: One of the nicest pleasures of the holiday season is the opportunity we get to visit with old friends and make new ones. Such a pleasure was mine when my husband and I attended the Christmas Dinner and meeting of Lodge 107, Floresville, Sunday, December 12th. The weather was cold and typical of a winter day, but the warmth of the people inside the lodge home was cordial and genuine. The barbecue crew, headed by Brother Joe Pavliska, furnished us with delicious beef barbecue. The ladies contributed all the good trimmings which made for a festive holiday meal.

The annual meeting followed with Brother Bob Bayer presiding. The lodge has purchased new aluminum windows which will be installed early next year. Members recently made a large donation toward a Heart Monitoring System at the Floresville Memorial Hospital. A new project, which they will support with a benefit dance in January, is helping purchase a new rural fire truck. They also discussed purchasing a water filtering system for the hall.

Proceedings moved along rapidly with the following officers chosen to serve for the next year: PresidentBob Bayer, who has held this office for thirteen years; Vice PresidentJohn Burleson, Secretary-Pauline Bayer, Financial SecretaryElizabeth Bielefeld, TreasurerPhyllis Purchis and Youth LeaderPolly Bayer.

The lodge was chartered April 21, 1912, with the only surviving charter member being Sister Anna Hrna, who has served our Society long and well. The lodge now has approximately 350 adult members and 100 juvenile members.

A lively group of youth, under the capable leadership of Sister Polly Bayer, held their monthly meeting also and busily made Christmas tree ornaments. They also demonstrated their skating skills before the dinner.

About 38 adults and 15 youth members attended the meeting, and everyone showed an active interest in the discussion of various projects and items of business. Their efforts in supporting a Sales Booth at the Floresville Peanut Festival in October paid off with a nice addition to the lodge's treasury. This is a hard-working group, and they are a credit to District VII and our entire Society.

Lodge Makes Contributions Cyclone

Dear Members: Our meeting of Lodge No. 24 was called to order by President Dan Sebek.

Melanie Zavodny and Kristie Waits presented the flag and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in a moment of silence for our deceased members, Sister Ludie Bedrich and Brother Charlie Bedrich.

We have Brother John Skrabanek who goes in for treatments, and Brother Charlie Tomasek who had eye surgery on the sick list; to them, and any member who may be ill, a speedy recovery.

Secretary Pat Vanicek read the correspondence-thank you notes from Brother Henry Skrabanek family and Brother Charlie Bedrich family for the flowers.

We welcomed our visitor, Mrs. Eugene Haisler.

The membership again discussed an emblem to be put in front of our building and it was voted on appointing a committee to look into this matter and they are Sisters Louise Zavodny, Arleen Tschoener and Nancy Posvar. We hope to have it made up and put on the building in the near future.

It was brought to our attention, by our president, that the lovely SPJST District III Queen Therese Mae Dobecka was killed recently and that we may like to give a donation to the Therese Dobecka Memorial Fund of Lodge No. 6 Youth Club. It was turned over to the Donation Committee and the amount of $50 was decided upon. In

our community we have a member who had a sickness long time and is bed-ridden so the membership decided to also give a donation to this person; the Donation Committee came up with a donation of $200 to be given to Roy Stermer.

New members accepted by our membership are: Darryl Polasek (signed up by Sales Representative Doris Svoboda), David Bedrich (signed up by a SR from another lodge,) and John Paul Chervenka who got additional insurance written up by Carol Chervenka.

Our youth leader gave us a report.

She mentioned that the youth are still selling tickets and the drawing was Sunday, December 12th at the Christmas Program. Plans for the Christmas Program are complete and they will decorate the tree after the meeting. They wanted to thank Brother Billy Smetanka for donating the tree. For their social this month they will go to a movie Wednesday, December 29th.

Those present having birthdays were Sister Arleen Tschoener, and Brothers Johnnie Svoboda and Larry Coots. (I forgot to mention that Youth Member Rodney Posvar had a birthday last month.) Having wedding anniversaries are Brother Ray and Sister Doris Coots, Brother Jerry, Jr. and Sister LaVerne Cabla, Brother Joe and Sister Lorene Haisler, Brother Wilbert and Sister Margaret Mikeska, President Dan and Sister Pat Sebek. To them, and anyone else who may be celebrating these occasions, best wishes!

Door prizes were won by Joe Haisler, Pat Vanicek, Carl Macek and Denise F`osvar, Our next meeting will be Wednesday, January 12, 1983, at 7:30 p.m. We will have installation of officers and also the board members, so please be present; pictures will be taken. We will be having "happy hour" again this year which was voted on, plus a social; bring your snacks.

Dear Friends and Members, Our meeting December 5, 1982 was called to order by President Jerry Pechal.

Mark Tepera and Michael Morris led the Pledge of Allegiance. The members were asked to remain standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased Sister Maxine Mikulas. May she rest in Eternal Peace.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers. All were present at this meeting. She read the minutes from the November meeting and they were approved as read. She also read the correspondence which consisted of a thank you note from the Rogers PTA thanking the lodge for the use of our barbeque pits for their carnival in November, also a Christmas card from Supreme Lodge.

New Rules and Regulations were passed out with Frank Klinkovsky reading the changes. They were accepted as read.

Mary Ann Billeck was re-elected as youth leader for another year. Congratulations, Mary Ann. Bar chairpersons for another year will be Robert and Evelyn Heese. Cleanup chairpersons are Emil and Frances Hejl, Entertainment-Jerry Pechal, Tickets-Dorothy Pechal. Frankie Klinkovsky was re-elected for another three-year term on the Audit Committee. Our kitchen has a different kitchen chairperson each month. Most of the months are already taken up for 1983.

Board minutes were read by Elmer Skrabanek. Salaries for chairpersons as set by the Board were approved by the members.

Youth Leader Mary Ann Billeck gave her report. Toys brought to the meeting by the YC will be turned over to the Rogers FFA, who in turn will repair them and donate them to the school in Mexia.

The adult members voted to donate $75 to the Temple Jaycees `Santa's Pals'.

Birthdays celebrated in December are J. D. Chlapek, Herman Hester, and Bennie Mikeska. Youth Club birthdays are Amy Kohutek and Lisa Tepera. My apologies to Matilda Sefcik who had a birthday in November and I overlooked it.

Wedding anniversaries in December are: Frank and Clara Hejl, Edwin and Teresa Chlapek, Woodrow and Gladys Marek, Charlie and Leah Marek and Jerry and Dorothy Pechal.

Audit Committee will meet Monday January 3, 1983 at 7 p.m. All chairpersons bring your books for audit. Our next meeting will be Sunday, January 9, 1983 at 2 p.m.

By the time this letter is printed our Christmas Party (Dec. 12) will be a thing of the past. Willie and I want to thank everyone who helped in any way to make the day a success.

Without each and everyone's help, (and there were too many people to name without possibly leaving out someone), we couldn't have done it ourselves and we certainly had a good time while preparing the meal, also a very big Thank You to the people responsible for the salads and desserts and the people rsponsible for the program and, of course, Santa Claus.

I would especially like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year; especially we do want to remember the people in nursing homes, the elderly and the ill. We love all of you and may 1983 be a better, healthier year for all. We love you all.

Wednesday, December 22, 1982 — VESTNIK/5 Youth Leader-Linda Michka; and the Board of Trustees for 1983 are: Chester Shmoldas, Jerry Michka, Severn Rodgers, Slivena Michka, Larry Melson and Hughie Smith.

After the election each officer and trustee had the opportunity to express their thanks to the members for the trust placed in them as candidates and for electing them to their respective offices, and pledged their cooperation and support to each officer and trustee and to Lodge 74. With this type of spirit and attitude of the officers and trustees, 1983 promises to be another great year.

Our election judges were: Marie Wright, Hazel Millwee, and W. C. Millwee. Our thanks to each of these judges.

Members of Lodge 74 wish to extend sympathy to the Archie Drake family. We were all saddened at the death of Mr. Archie Drake; he will certainly be missed.

As usual, our Youth Leader Linda Michka and Youth Club have been busy. They have decorated our lodge for Christmas and it is beautiful.

They won second place in the Christmas Parade for the "Best Theme."

The youth club square dancers entertained the residents of White Hall Nursing Home and Leisure Lodge Nursing Home. We can be proud of our youth club members and leaders.

I would like to mention that we will be having a dance Saturday, December 25th, with music by the Rolling River Band; also our New Year's Eve Dance will be from 8:30 to 12:30; admission $5 per member and $7 per guest. The traditional New Year's Eve punch will be served from 7:30 to 8:30. If you would like to avoid standing in line New Year's Eve to get drink tickets, buy them early and avoid the rush.

Holds Annual Meeting & Luncheon Needville

Dear Members and Friends: Prior to the meeting of Lodge No. 81, held Sunday, December 12, 1982, everyone enjoyed a delicious luncheon again, which was served at 12 noon. Sister Matilda Slacalek baked the turkey and dressing and Sister Vlasta Nowotny baked a ham, for which we thank them, and also the rest of the ladies for bringing the many good casseroles and desserts.

President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

Sister Vlasta Nowotny led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and we remained standing in silence as a tribute to our deceased member, Brother Edward Vitek.

May he rest in peace.

All of the officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting.

After a minor correction, the minutes were approved as read.

Greeting cards were read from the Supreme Lodge and Brother Louis Hanus.

A card of thanks from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 for the box of fruit we donated to them, was read and also one from the Brother Louis Zamanek family.

Financial Secretary Allen Zwahr gave her report. Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the treasurer's report.

Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel reported on the activities at the hall and then gave his financial report. All of these reports were accepted as given.

Reported on the sick list is Brother Bill Fojtik, Jr. who is at the Caney Valley Hospital, Wharton with a back problem.

Sister Winnefred Susan reported on the purchase of the fruit for the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home and for the Christmas Party.

We have been giving an attendance prize at each of our meetings. A motion was made to begin our New Year by giving two door prizes at each meeting. The motion carried, so come to the meetings and see if you will be the lucky one to win.

Another motion was made to continue having a luncheon before the meetings during the months in which we conduct our meeting in daytime.

This motion also carried and it will be a covered dish luncheon served at 12:30 p.m.

We were happy to have with us Sister Alvina Gajevsky; do come, again!

A big round of applause was given to Sister Matilda Slacalek for baking the turkey and dressing and also to Allene Zwahr who served as a financial secretary for seven years and will no longer hold this office.

Refund checks were handed out and then Brother August Teykl installed the newly-elected officers for 1983. A big round of applause was given them and a few pictures were taken.

The attendance prize was won by our President Charlie Matcek.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.

The youngsters were all called to the front and gathered around the Christmas tree, where Sister Willie Mae Kuykendall led them in singing several Christmas songs and carols in preparation of the arrival of Santa Claus. All were anxious to sit on his lap and get a bag of fruit and candy from him and have a picture taken.

After a few thrilling moments, Santa Claus departed on his way.

Lodge Gains New Members

SPJST Lodge No. 87 held their regular lodge meeting Friday evening, November 12, 1982 at 7 p.m., with President Vlasta Jez presiding.

The meeting was called to order; Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance; members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased members, Brother Gerald A. Valley and Sister Vlasta Bowker. May they rest in eternal peace.

Various reports were given and old and new business were discussed.

The following new members were accepted into the lodge: Robert Pimberton, John R. McClaren, Catherine Cunningham, Danny Ray Slack and Shelia M. Slack. A warm welcome is extended to these new members.

Vlasta Coufal was reported to be convalescing at home following a recent stay in the hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery.

In behalf of the lodge president and officers, we would like to take this opportunity to wish each and everyone a very warm and special holidays; may they be safe, and beautiful. Happy New Year, too!

Lodge No. 88 December Monthly and Annual Meeting Minutes The monthly meeting was called to order by President Pflughaupt at 10:07 a.m. Flag Bearer Lynn Pflughaupt presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which, the members stood in silence and tribute to deceased members.

The minutes of the November meeting and all financial reports were read and approved.

Youth Leader Joyce Mynar announced the Youth Club's next meeting to be December 16th, when they will have a Christmas Party for the youth members and their families and they are to bring gifts suitable for patients in the nursing home. The annual Christmas program will be December 20th at 7:30 p.m.

Sister Marie Stayton reported an English play, "Abbey Answers a Want Ad", is being cast and will be performed early next year.

Reporter on Benevolance, Sister Mary Kosut reported 227 hours and $186 in expense as charity work for November and 1,912 hours as volunteer work done by members at the lodge in October.

Members reported sick were Jeannette Vala and Joe Jaksch. Sister Della Kadlecek thanked all those who visited her and sent cards during her illness.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 154 members present at the monthly meeting. "Happy Birthday" was sung to members having birthdays and a list of anniversaries was read. Door prize winners were Brother Harry Finn and Sisters Doris Knapick and Helen Hegwood with special Liberty Savings prize winner Sister Evelyn Vornsand. The Board of Trustees donated the refreshments for the noon break.

This meeting adjourned at 11:15

A candle was lit and placed by a wreath by Brother Vernon Hegwood while First Vice-President Mildred Holeman held a memorial service in tribute to our deceased members.

The following officers were elected for 1983: Larry Pflughaupt-president; Clara Broz-first vice-president; Frances Olexa-second vice president; Marceil Malak-secretary; Josephine Pflughaupt-financial secretary; Lynn Pflughaupt-treasurer; Linda Wehringyouth leader; Helen Hegwood-guide; Frank Tilich-sergeant-at-arms and Vincent Hegwood-flag bearer.

Homer Alexander was elected as Entertainment chairman.

The following were elected to the Board of Trustees: Tim Kostom, Willie Wehring, Henry Kite, Jerry Ermis, Joe Miksch, Steve Kelly, Fletcher Jamar, Gene Barcak, Naomi Spencer, Alvin Raymond, Mike Trefell, Royal Warnasch, John Hilsher, Karl Lindemann and A. J. Stayton.

District V Director Louis Hanus installed all new officers and board of trustees for 1983.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 199 members present at the annual meeting. Door prize winners were Sisters Celeste Darilek, Jeannette Eubank and Katherine Knapick, with special Liberty Savings prize winner Brother Henry Kite.

Lodge No. 88 News Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 annual meeting was held Sunday, December 12, 1982 with 200 members present to take part in the welfare of Lodge No. 88 in the year 1983.

The monthly meeting convened at 10:15 a.m. and adjourned for dinner at noon to serve the members attending the morning session. John Hilsher, in charge of the kitchen with his committee, served a delicious meal consisting of roast beef, rice with gravy, green beans, peaches and tossed salad, tea and coffee.

The annual meeting convened at 1:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service for our 62 departed members in 1982 by Sister Mildred Holeman. A white covered table held a decorated cross and, in front of it, a candle which was lit by Vernon Hegwood and stayed lit through the meeting.

The Rules and Regulations changes were read by the committee and acted on by the members. This was followed by annual reports by all the committees.

It sure is nice to see Della Kadlecek smiling and looking so good after spending three weeks in Heights Hospital undergoing surgery which was successful. Della is a busy lady; she doesn't let any grass grow under her feet and it is hard to keep up with her. She doesn't drive the car yet — doctor's orders! She has a reliable chauffeur on call in her husband, Amos, but she won't be catered to long, and she will be on her own.

Sunday, she was at the meeting taking care of her obligations with her sister-in-law, Louise Kadlecek.

We are always very happy when we see a member get well and cheerful like Brother Tim Kostom. It is about four months since Tim got ill, but, with the help of his loving spouse he is doing wonders and it won't take too long for Tim to be as good as new.

All through these months he never lost interest in his HOBBY "Lodge No. 88". They come as usual to see how dances are, work on the social night and Tim occupies his place at the table on the stage, also visits the Blue Room and enjoys the company of others.

Friday night, December 10, Royal and Laura Warnasch entertained sixty friends in the lodge's dining room and the lovely Red Room with cocktails and steak dinner served by W. Wehring. To bring out the holiday spirit, everything was lovelydecorated and the atmosphere was very friendly. Royal and Laura have a lovely family and they all were present from the oldest to the youngest; beautiful daughter, Beverlyn, with her husband, Ronnie McGaughy, and their son, Gary (the image of his father), age 16; then son, Royal Jr. (nicknamed "peanut", and that is what they call him up to this day. I wonder why? (he is a handsome and not a small man); his wife, Kim, a lovely petite young lady and mother of the baby boy, Justine, 7 months old and the pride of the grandparents; they had to wait 16 years for their second grandson. Congratulations!

Everyone present enjoyed the party, socializing and indulging in a game of cards; even a pool table was set up for some to enjoy. Thanks, it was a lovely evening.

Do you have your New Year's dance reservations? If not, I am afraid the house is full, unless some cancellations come in the last minute.

Lodge No. 92, Ft. Worth The Christmas Party for Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 was a success even though we did not have as many members attend as called in for reservations. I would like to thank the financial secretaries for taking the reservations and also for being at the door to greet the members and guests.

We were honored to have our District III Director Sid Pokladnik, and Supreme Lodge Secretary Leonard Mikeska and their wives with us, and hope they enjoyed the day and had a safe trip home. We were sorry Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris was not able to attend. He did send his regrets that he could not be with us.

I would like to thank the hall management for working with me and for setting up the extra tables and chairs and helping make things as easy as possible.

Sister Martha Durham and her daughter, Pam, did a fantastic job in decorating the tables and hall. They are to be commended for their work.

I thank Sister Marie Tankersley of Lodge 180, Burleson, for providing us with accordion music during the meal. She is a professional musician and everyone enjoyed it tremendously.

And last, but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to say a big "THANK YOU" to the women that baked turkeys, everyone that helped slice them, and the men and women who helped serve, prepare the food and pastry and clean up afterwards. It was really appreciated and I will not list names; I do not want to leave anyone out.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the music which was provided by the Henry Rejcek Orchestra of Ennis.

They always do a fine job.

We will be looking forward to next year's get together at Lodge 180 in Burleson and know we will have a good time.

Lodge Elects Officers

Galveston

Lodge No. 173, Galveston held its monthly meeting Wednesday, December 8, 1982 at 407 Ling, Bayou Vista; the business meeting started at 7:45 p.m.

Before the meeting, all members present enjoyed a delicious meal of smoked turkey, with different side dishes, vegetables and desserts.

Each family brought a covered dish, and the lodge furnished the turkey.

There was plenty to eat and drink for everyone. There were thirteen members and two guests present.

Members who did not come to our meeting and party missed a good time. The guests were District V Director Louis Hanus from Houston and Sister Marie Hammond from Danbury Lodge No. 139.

Sister Agnes Valusek had put up a small Christmas tree with blinking lights to add to the festivities.

After the meal, a business meeting followed. Sister Agnes Valusek reported that Sister Mary Cordray has broken her kneecap recently, and President Alvin Sefcik has had eye surgery a few days ago.

He said that he could see better now than before the surgery and he was there at our meeting/party.

There was also an election of officers for 1983. Officers are: President—Alvin Sefcik, 1st Vice President —John J. Valusek, 2nd Vice President —Kenneth Hitchcock, Secretary — Henrietta Fee, Financial Secretary—Bessie Findley, Treasurer —Josephine Hitchcock, Flag Bearer — Clarence Fee. Director Louis Hanus then installed the officers. He wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a good year in 1983 and he also mentioned that it's nice where all brothers and sisters of the lodge can work together. He hopes that, maybe in the new year, we will have a better attendance.

President Alvin Sefcik reported that he is looking for a place to hold our meetings after new year. We all want to thank Brother John and Sister Agnes Valusek for letting us use their camp for the meetings for so long.

Dear Members and Guests: A large group of members and guests gathered in Round Top Rifle Association Hall, Saturday, December 11, 1982 at 6:30 p.m. for a Christmas Party and brief business session.

The beautifully-decorated yuletide tree with all the gifts and bags of goodies beneath the sparkling tree and Christmas motifs on all the tables gave everyone the Christmas spirit as they entered the room.

President Harold Bergmann presided at the business session. He thanked the Food Committee for preparing and serving the delectable baked-ham provided by the lodge and a great variety of delicious side dishes and dessert brought by members. The president further expressed appreciation to the Entertainment Committee for bringing and decorating the Christmas tree and assisting in gift, exchange and also special thanks to anyone else who helped in any way to make this an enjoyable evening.

The Food Committee stated the lodge will furnish baked-ham at the January 13, 1983 meeting at 7 p.m. in Warrenton Store Guest Room and members are to bring a side dish or dessert to help complete the menu.

Immediately, at conclusion of the meeting, everyone enjoyed delicious food and refreshments.

Sister Rosalee Kostom, secretary, read the minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

Treasurer's report was read by Sister Lillie Spies who gave a wonderful report.

Sunshine reporter, Sister Mary Kosut, gave her report. Cards (sympathy) were sent to Sister Stella Bukowski, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buri and Mr. and Mrs Larry Pflughaupt. Thank you cards went to Brothers Mike Trefell and Homer Alexander for helping in the kitchen in November and get-well cards were sent to Sister Della Kadlecek and Louise Chudej. Birthday cards went to the ones who had birthdays in December, namely, Sisters Catherine Lemke, Lillian Finn, Albina Drawe and Ardith McClellan.

Sister Leddie Kadera is in the nursing home and doing as well as can be expected. It was so nice to see Sister Della Kadlecek back at the meeting; she looks wonderful after her surgery.

Sister Mary Johnson donated the pickles for the Christmas Dinner.

They were delicious. Thank You! My apology goes to Sister Annie Hoffman for not mentioning that Sister Dorothy Gebhardt cooked for her in November.

Wednesday, December 22, 1982 — VtSTMK/7 The Birthday Club Sisters want to thank these wonderful people who donated the punch for our Christmas Dinner. It added the color to our dinner. The donors were Brothers and Sisters John and Birdie Pech, Willie and Edna Wehring, and Royal and Laura Warnasch. Thank you all!

Hostesses for December for the first Wednesday were Brothers and Sisters Harry and Lillian Finn, and George and Flo Taake. Their helpers for the first Wednesday were Sisters Della Miksch and Mary Tilich. For the second Wednesday were Brother and Sister George and Flo Taake and the sisters who helped them were Della Miksch and Bessie Lero; these wonderful cooks served a delicious dinner.

Election of officers for 1983 was held and the officers are President—Pearl Hanka, Vice President —Kathy Trefell, Secretary — Rosalee Kostom, Treasurer—Lillie Spies.

Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving is the last holiday before Christmas in the United States of America. Early colonists rejoiced because of good harvest and victories over the Indians. The first proclamation of Thanksgiving, as a holiday, was issued by George Washington in 1789 in honor of the new constitution. When Abraham Lincoln came along, he established the last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day. The country stayed with the last Thursday until Franklin D. Roosevelt changed it to

the third Thursday of the month.

This caused an uproar, even though Roosevelt explained he did it to give merchants a longer Christmas shopping season.

The pressure to change it back continued to grow and Congress, in 1941, heeded the wishes of the folks back home and changed it back to the fourth Thursday, which is where we are at now. There is still a hot feud going on over where Thanksgiving was first inspired. Tradition had it that a proclamation was issued by Governor William Bradford of Plymouth Colony in 1621.

What people are thankful for is considered their own business, but most will, no doubt, be thankful for good health, a loving family, dear friends, and natural sources. Every holiday celebration is shaded and marred with many unfortunate disastrous events.

My sincere thanks go to all persons in the relative groups, the fraternal social society, the editors who arrange my letters for newspapers, also to our national economic persons who care for the prosperity of all people in this country.

November 25th, in the afternoon, my dear daughter, Lillie Huber, in Austin, Texas called me and wanted to know if I was invited somewhere for a social Thanksgiving dinner. I had received two invitations, first from my dear granddaughter, Janet Mokry, her dear husband, Thomas, and their lovely son, John T. Markus, age 16; and the second invitation was from my dear grandson, Patrick, his wife, Georgie, and their 3 children, Amy, Grant and Georiann Peal. I accepted their invitation. (Janet is the only child of my dear daughter, Olga, and her dear husband, Emil Mokry. Patrick is the son of my dear daughter, Ann, and her dear husband, Roy Peal, all of Corpus Christi, Texas.) My hearty thanks for the wonderful celebration, this event will be added to my notebook.

The weather is nice with a north wind and temperature is 55 degrees and no rain.

Corpus Christi, Texas The annual meeting of Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association (SMFIA) was held Sunday, December 5, 1982 at 4 p.m. in the SPJST Lodge No 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi Hall.

The meeting was called to order

by President Ray Cykala with the members reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The attendance was only 15 members. Then, we all stood up in tribute to express our sympathy in memory of our departed members, N. G. Cooper, Cleo Linsey and Chas.

Urban.

All officers were present and their reports were accepted with applause.

Salary to the officers and committees are unchanged -- no inflation in this event! Sincere thanks to them!

All the officers for 1983 were reelected, namely, President-Roy Cykala, Vice President-Libby Peters, Secretary-Betty Jurica, Treasurer-Frank Veselka; and Honorary for Life President-John Stasa (from 1978) and Frank C. Sacky (from 1983).

The Audit Committee consists of Frank Sijansky, Frank C. Sacky and Edna Koonce.

Appraisers are all the officers.

Delegate to the State Convention will be Betty Jurica; substitute, Frank Veselka.

Donations were unanimously passed by a vote to donate for the Christmas Party sponsored by the Sokol Unit Corpus Christi, SPJST Lodge 79 and Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association included $200; S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I at Taylor, Texas, $50; and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville, $50.

Our membership is smaller; in 1979 we had two delegates to the State Convention, but, financially, we are better. Fire and extended losses were smaller.

The next meeting will be in July, 1983 and Secretary Betty Jurica will mail the notices to the members.

After the meeting there was a social and supper.

The weather was sunny — temperature of 75 degrees.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No 29, Taylor, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother C. A. "CHARLIE" KRUEGER, 61, of Taylor, who died Sunday, November 14, 1982, in a Temple hospital.

Services were held Tuesday, November 16 at 2 p.m., at the Condra Memorial Chapel with Rev. David Bulgerin and Rev. Frank Wallace officiating. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery., Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Elsie Krueger of Taylor; one daughter, Mrs. Marvin G. McVay of Taylor; four sisters, Mrs. Martha Wolbrueck and Mrs. Dora Wolbrueck of Taylor, Mrs. Tillie Berry of Hitchcock, and Mrs. Dolly Miller of Marlin; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

—SPJSTEXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No 24, Cyclone, on behalf of our officers and entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother CHARLES WILLIAM BEDRICH who passed away Monday, November 22, in a Temple hospital after a lengthy illness at the age of 84.

Mr. Bedrich was born in Bleibersville. He was a farmer in the Meeks community until 1977, when he retired and moved to Temple. He was a member of the Meeks Lodge RVOS where he was secretary for 25 years. He was a member and elder of the Ocker Brethren Church.

Survivors include his widow, Marie Bedrich of Temple; two daughters, Dorothy Zabcik of Temple and Charlene Krupicka of Waco; two brothers, John Bedrich of Temple and Oscar Bedrich of Burlington; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 1982, at Ocker Brethren Church with the Rev. Mark Labaj and the Rev. James S. Parks officiating, Burial was in Ocker Brethren Church Cemetery.

May our departed lodge brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

Beauty of Live Christmas Tree There are many reasons for choosing a live tree for the holidays.

They are beautiful and fragrant.

They are ecologically acceptable.

They are a wise investment in that they can be planted outside your house once Christmas has become a beautiful memory. Some simple observations when choosing and buying your tree will eliminate the possibility of having it dry out quickly and the danger of fire.

The height of your ceiling and the width of the space the tree will occupy are important measurements to keep in mind when making your purchase. Plan to stand the tree away from a TV set, radiator, heating unit or duct. When selecting the tree test the needles for freshness by bending them back gently. If they spring back they are fresh . if not, beware!

Live trees consume a lot of water so choose a holder with at least a 2quart capacity and keep it filled to within an inch of the rim at all times.

The stand should have a collar

several inches in diameter and screws to hold the tree firmly in place. Chop about an inch off the stump before putting the tree in water.

Trimming the Christmas tree is a celebration all itself! Many families have tree trimming parties for close friends and relatives. But before you get to all the fun make sure you inspect the light strings so there are no frayed ends or exposed wires.

Lights can be strung at random or in any pattern your imagination conjures up. Keep larger and heavier lights and trimmings on the lower half of the tree, tapering toward the top.

That added bonus of being able to plant your tree outside your house will keep the spirit of the holidays alive all through the year. The tree can be planted outdoors in either of two ways. Keeping the root ball moist, carefully put the tree in a spot protected from the wind, to be planted in the Spring. If you have had the foresight to dig a hole for your tree before the ground froze, you can, plant your tree right after the holidays are over. The dirt from the hole must be kept covered to keep it from freezing also. Once firmly set in the ground you will be able to enjoy your Christmas tree every season of the year! ***

The History of Eggnog Take milk, eggs and beat with grog in a noggin. While it sounds like a nursery rhyme, it is really a potent, but inexact recipe for an early eggnog.

The word "eggnog" first appeared in the American language during colonial times. It may have come from the word "noggin," a small drinking vessel with an upright handle in which the drink was prepared. Or, since rum or grog was used, it may be a combination from egg 'n grog. There were many variations of milk and egg drinks such as egg-pop, custard posset, milk punch, egg-and-milk, flip and auld man's milk.

In the 1850's the first recipes for eggnog appeared in cookbooks.

Amazingly they were not for beverages but for foods and cures for the ill. This is no surprise because of the high-quality protein, and large amounts of essential vitamins and minerals in the beverage.

This beverage was often referred to as a yard-of-flannel when housewives found it worked like a piece of flannel wound around the neck in soothing sore throats.

While milk and egg drinks

continued to be given to invalids as a medicine to be used only "with advice," warnings should have been given to those who overlooked the traditional additions of rum, brandy, whiskey, sherry, wine, ale and cider.

Eggnog drinks led to many customs. It was a beverage often served to travelers before or after they reached their destination. It was a morning drink at the breakfast table. In the South, speciality drink shops served only milk and egg drinks.

Then, eggnog became a drink served only on Christmas and New Year's. It did not become an all around holiday drink until eggnog parties became popular in Washington, D.C. Then they had to be stretched over the entire holiday season so members of Washington society, and Congress could make the rounds.

Easy Syllabub (8 servings) 1 cup chilled sauterne or white grape juice 1/2 cup super fine granulated sugar 2 tablespoons frozen pineapple juice concentrate 1 cup whipping cream Nutmeg Combine sauterne or grape juice, sugar and pineapple juice concentrate; let stand in refrigerator 15 minutes. Add whipping cream, beat until very frothy. Ladle out liquid and foam into chilled wine or sherbet glasses. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Serve immediately.

Eggnog Sauce I (Yield: 1 1/2 cups) Saucepan, 1-quart 2 teaspoons cornstarch 1/8 teaspoon salt 1% cups dairy eggnog 2 teaspoons brandy flavor 1/2 teaspoon rum flavor In a saucepan, combine cornstarch and salt; gradually stir in eggnog.

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Boil 2 additional minutes. Remove from heat, add brandy and rum flavoring.

Chill.

Shortcut Eggnog 2 cups cold milk 1/2 pint French vanilla or New York ice cream, cut up 2 teaspoons rum or brandy extract or vanilla 1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel Combine milk, ice cream and extract or vanilla in mixer bowl or blender container; beat until smooth. Combine sugar and orange peel; add to punch and mix. Pour into chilled punch cups. Yield: 3 cups.

Most important, it is a simple pie to prepare, the make-ahead variety, and while it is chilling, there is plenty of time to get ready for company. The filling is made from Jell-O Americana golden egg custard mix with thawed Birds Eye Cool. Whip non-dairy whipped topping blended in for delightful with Garnished creaminess. additional whipped topping, spearmint candy leaves and cinnamon candies, this elegant pie is a holiday dream.

10/VESTNili — Wednesday, December 22, 1982 Eggnog Pie 1 package (6-serving size) egg custard mix 1 1/2 teaspoons unflavored gelatin 2 1/4 cups milk 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 2 tablespoons dark rum or use 2 tablespoons rum extract 1 container (4 1/2 oz.) frozen whipped topping, thawed 1 baked 9-inch pie shell, cooled Combine custard mix and gelatin

in saucepan; blend in milk. Bring quickly to a boil, stirring constantly.

Chill until thickened. Beat until smooth; then add nutmeg and rum.

Blend in 1 1/2 cups of the whipped topping. Spoon into pie shell. Chill until firm, about 3 hours. Garnish with remaining whipped topping.

Sprinkle with additional nutmeg and decorate with spearmint candy leaves and cinnamon candies, if desired.

Home Improvements Require Good Questions Despite current economic conditions, many people today are making decisions concerning the upkeep and maintenance of their homes.

Whether its siding, new gutters and downspouts, new windows, or attic ventilation systems, the decision to make an improvement is just the beginning. Then come decisions concerning the product to use and the contractor to install it.

Making the right decision involves asking the right questions. To help homeowners ask the right questions, we asked Charles Gindele, staff engineer with Alcoa Building Products and a former remodeling contractor, what questions he thinks are important to ask.

According to Gindele, "When you buy a home improvement, you're buying two things: the product and the installation." Today, a lot of people are looking for ways to save money on home improvements and that's good up to a point. However, saving a few dollars on an inferior product or less than professional installation can cost a lot more down the road. Home improvements must be viewed as investments that will pay for themselves over 20 years or more.

From the numerous con sumer letters we receive at Alcoa Building Products, there are generally four or five typical questions most often asked.

How can I find a good siding contractor?

The best way is through referrals. Ask your neighbors or co-workers who have had homes sided. Find out if they are satisfied with the products and workmanship. Inspect the work. Stand on the sidewalk and look at a house carefully.

Ask yourself if it's the quality of work you would want on your house. Find out if the

contractor's prices were competitive and if he cleaned up properly after the job was finished.

Is it necessary to get estimates?

Because most home improvements are a major expenditure, it's a good idea to get at least three estimates.

After you've talked with all three contractors, you'll have to make a choice based on price, information contained in their presentations and your examination of jobs each has done.

Should I have a signed contract?

If the contractor is highly recommended by someone you trust, and has worked in the area for a number of years, a contract may not be necessary; otherwise, it's best to have one.

The contract should specify which products will be used (the brands, colors, styles), total purchase price, amount of down-payment, terms, payment schedule and types of warranties from the manufacturer and installer. It should also specify that the job will be done in a workmanlike manner, and that the installers will clear away all trash and scraps when the job is completed.

Be wary of contracts that permit the installer to use an "equivalent" product on your home. You may pay for one brand of siding and get another if you sign this type of contract. Another thing to watch for is a statement that allows the distributor to put a lien on your home if the contractor doesn't pay him for the material. Any contractor who asks you to sign this type of document should be investigated further.

And one more thing — federal law now requires that all home improvement contracts have a clause providing a 72hour "cooling off" period,

during which the homeowner can change his mind. This is particularly important to the homeowner who feels he was subjected to high pressure.

What should I look for in terms of warranties?

The product warranty on siding varies among manufacturers. The two things to look for are: (1) The types of potential problems covered — these should include such things as defects, chipping, peeling, blistering, rusting the warranty. Standard coverage is 25-40 years. The first three to five years are generally a full and unlimited warranty under which the manufacturer will replace materials at his cost; the balance is usually pro-rated — the manufacturer and homeowner share replacement costs based on a table of percentages and time lapsed. For example, if a replacement panel is needed after six years, the manufacturer may assume 80 percent of the cost and expect the homeowner to pay the rest.

Installers usually warrant their work for at least 12 months. Be wary of any contractor offering less. Also, remember that the product warranty is offered by the manufacturer — the installer shouldn't void or increase it.

Any contractor who offers to extend the manufacturer's warranty by five years is making a promise he can't fulfill.

The American Bankers Association suggests you investigate setting up a living trust, so called because it goes into effect immediately instead of waiting until you die. The ABA calls living trusts "the most popular, fastest-growing estate-management device in use," and cites these advantages:

When you realize that something is expected of yourself, then "purpose" in your heart that you will accomplish something. Without a fixed purpose, nothing can be accomplished. An individual without purpose is like a ship without a rudder; it can never get anywhere.

But a young individual with a purpose in life has something definite in mind and therefore, reaches something definite. How foolish we would consider the captain who left the harbor without a definite purpose as to where he was going. Until he charts a course, he would be nothing more than a drifter upon the sea.

Therefore, as an underlying principle, have this thought firmly implanted in your mind. Make it a part of yourself and seek each day to fulfill it. At the beginning of the day stop long enough to give expression to the words, "Something is expected of me." At the close of the day, ask yourself, "What have I accomplished?"

The greatest inspiration and incentive to the accomplishment of things in life is to realize that something is expected of you; not of somebody else, but of you. The men and women who have achieved the greatest success in life have been those who have appreciated this truth and have sought to govern their lives accordingly. When an individual realizes that something is expected of them, in most cases, they will seek to measure up to the particular standard that is expected.

A trust avoids the expenses and delays incurred in probating a will.

Also, unlike a will, a trust does not become a matter of public record.

Your friends and neighbors need never know the size of your estate.

The trust can be drawn up so that the bank handles your personal financial affairs: doctor, hospital, food and tax bills, for example: if you should become incapacitated.

If you think a trust might be appropriate for you, the ABA recommends that you first talk to your lawyer, then to a bank trust officer. Trusts are tailored to the individual and the provisions can vary widely. You can retain the final decision on all investments or let the bank trust department make the decisions for you.

Who needs one? Bankers report that living trusts seem to be especially attractive to three groups: busy professionals who want their assets managed for capital growth, retired people who don't want to worry about their investments and people who want to take advantage of a windfall such as a large inheritance, gifts, or life insurance and company-benefits settlements. The fee for administering a living trust is usually based on the market value of your holdings.

The Christmas and New Year Season is one of lifted spirits, when we wish each other good fortune, good health, and prosperity in our exchange of Holiday Greetings.

It is also a good time to turn our minds to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. What we do today in the way of gifts will mean much to deserving young people in the future.
