SPJST Scholarship Applicants The deadline for applying for an SPJST Scholarship is December 31, 1982.

This deadline applies to both the Freshman and Undergraduate Programs.

Information required to be submitted to the Home Office by the applicant (after first applying by Dec. 31, 1982) will be due March 31, 1983 for the Freshman and June 30, 1983 for the Undergraduate.

To be fair to all, those who have applied, there will be no extension of any due date to any applicant.

We would also remind you that to be eligible for a scholarship you must be a "premium paying member" so if your certificate with us is "paid up" you need to contact your SPJST sales representative for additional coverage.

Bro. Ernest Uptmore Charles Vyvjala, Sr. Named 'Outstanding Outlives Policy Auto Dealer' November 25, 1982, Charles Vyvjala, Sr. celebrated his 96th birthday and became the 60th person in the history of the SPJST to outlive the actuarial table for his insurance policy.

Charles Vyvjala, Sr. was born in Praha, Texas November 25, 1886 and later moved to Smithville, Texas where he met and married Sophie Kubicek. This marriage was blessed with three children who are all still living. Mrs. Victoria Vydrzal and Charles Vyvjala, Jr., both live in Smithville, Texas and Alfred Vyvjala of Austin, Texas. Bro. Vyvjala also has nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. His wife died in 1964.

Bro. Vyvjala joined the SPJST Lodge No. 38 in 1920 at Kovar, Texas. He served as secretary-treasurer of the lodge for 15 years.

He is a Veteran of World War I wounded in action and received a Honorable Discharge. He enjoys company and his hobby is playing dominoes.

The Supreme Lodge, the members of SPJST Lodge No. 38 and the entire SPJST salute Bro. Vyvjala on his 96th birthday and wish him many more happy years to come.

Bro. Ernest Uptmore, owner of Uptmore Motors in West, was chosen recently "the most outstanding dealer in the State of Texas" by the Texas Independent Automobile Association.

Bro. Uptmore has been in the automobile business in West for the past 36 years. The Texas Quality Dealer award is presented annually by the T.I.A.D.A., and the presentation was made at the association's annual convention in Brownsville.

Currently, he is a director in the state and national associations and is in nomination for the Quality Dealer Award to be presented to the outstanding dealer in the United States.

(Brother Ernest and Sister Lucille Uptmore are longtime members of the SPJST and belong to Lodge Jaromir No. 54, West. Your editor has known them and their two sons and daughter since moving to West 14 years ago. Their sons and daughter are active in dancing with the Czechoslovakian Folk Dancers of West. Our members and readers can certainly depend on Uptmore Motors in West for fair dealing.

Czech Day Held In Dallas October 17, 1982 The 42nd Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas was a great succes.

And Stanley Patak, chairman of the Czech Day festivities, deserves a big round of applause; also all the committees who worked with him.

Every year we honor the oldest Czech gentleman and the oldest Czech lady attending our morning program as king and queen of our Czech Day. This year 84 year-old Frank Mach from Dallas was the king and 86 year-old Mrs. Antonie Novak from Ennis was the queen and both received nice trophies. We also honor the longest-married Czech couple with a nice plaque and this year's honorees were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mach from Dallas; they were married 56 years and here is something that doesn't happen very often: this. Mr. Frank Mach also was the king;of the day.

The programs were well-prepared and performed, along the lines of our Czech heritage and also wellreceived by the audience. Our committee wants to thank all the performers, directors, masters of ceremonies, orchestra leaders, dancers, singers, musicians, program chairmen and all the good workers in the beverage, kolache and souvenir stands for a very successful day and the job well-done, also we want to thank all of the fine people from all over Texas who came to see our program and enjoy the day with us.

We hope that you all will come again next year. Again, we thank you all!

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mach of Dallas were presented a plaque for being married the longest couple (56 years) at the Czech Day. Mr. Mach was also given a trophy for being the oldest gentleman present.

Ft. Worth Talented Ice Skater Wins Second Place Lodge No. 92 in Fort Worth has talented ice skater, Denise Danna, age 11, who participated in the second Texas Open Ice Skating Competition held at Tandy Center in Fort Worth, September 10th through 12th.

Six other teams were present from Dallas, Houston and Little Rock, Arkansas.

In the individual events, Denise placed second in Strolling IV and Footwork IV, third place in Interpretive IV, and sixth place in Freestyle IV. Denise is a member of the Junior Precision Team of Fort Worth, which won first place for a gold medal.

The Tandy Ice. Skating Team won second place in Overall Team Competition.

Denise is the daughter of Brother Gene and Sister Barbara Dana, who are members of Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

NOTICE TO MEMBERS AND READERS: Beginning with this issue we are going to print the SPJST Lodge Calendar on page 15 in smaller (8-point) type so that we can get more of the lodges' dates listed; that will be 2 points smaller than the rest of the Vestnik.

Ironically, when yours truly became editor 1 January 1969 (14 years ago), the calendar was only about one-fourth the present length; how it has grown! and we feel it does help the lodges with their meetings and dances, etc. *IP*

Isn't it true no one can deny that fraternal beneficial organizations are performing an extremely important function? They help their members or their families, in case of death, with financial benefits, which not only cover the cost of burial, hospital and doctor bills but often provide the only cash for the surviving family. Many fraternal organizations help their members in case of sickness and provide them in golden years.

Aside from the strictly financial aid, fraternal organizations devote themselves to various cultural and social activities. We, the members of the SPJST, do not have to go far for proof of this statement. Some of our local lodges used to maintain regular libraries. During my younger days, I remember that Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28 at East Bernard had over 500 volumes of good books, besides having the distinction of possessing a complete set of books called "Otto Encyclopedia," the Czech equivalent to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 likewise used to have about 750 books. Surely there must have been other lodges whose collections were not overlooked or their usefulness underestimated. We now understand that many of these books were donated to the SPJST Library/Archives/Museum.

In addition, many of our local lodges own homes with halls and club rooms that are an asset for social centers of the communities.

The property owned by the local lodges must run into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In the past, fraternal organizations were the forerunners of the present "social security" plans.

They gave the members encouragement, incentive, and strength to develop and to improve their environment. It would, indeed, be highly interesting to compile some data which would show how many-of our SPJST members have improved their financial standing by securing loans to buy a farm or to build a home.

The influence of our organization, or any other fraternal organization, reaches far beyond our actual membership. It is not merely the insurance feature to our members which we can boast. We have been leading centers of group life among many Americans of foreign origin.

We have become institutions that not only have taken care of our dead and our needy, but we have provided a realistic school for learning the fundamentals of representative government. Our work did not consist merely of collecting assessments.

Let us look at our work from the point of social service or broad social security. The fraternal organizations, without an exception, had come into existence with the purpose to aid those hardy immigrants, of various nationalities.

When we say immigrants, we mean pioneers in every implication of the word. They started from scratch.

They were unable to speak the language. They knew nothing or very little about the government.

Actually, they had to learn all over.

Therefore, we can point out that the fraternal organizations, without exception, served as civic centers for instruction and guidance of the newcomers. The job of guiding and teaching was taken seriously; first on the list was protection in case of death. Next, a practical and democratic demonstration of how a local lodge should be managed to make sure that no person could control the entire management was learned. Simultaneously, constant instructions, information, and adherence to the principle that every decision must be the outcome of discussion, that every member must be given a voice to say what they believed was right, was stressed.

The immigrants loved the idea of taking part in debate and voicing their sentiments. Many times mistakes were made, and some of them were serious mistakes; but the members learned more and more and practiced the true meaning of what Abraham Lincoln called "government of the people, by the people, and for the people." *** "There are certain truths which are true no matter how much the world may question or deny them. In the economic realm, for instance, you cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of it.

You cannot multiply the wealth by dividing it. Governments cannot give to people what they do not first take away from people. And that which one man receives without working for, another man must work for without receiving it. And nothing can kill the initiative of a people quicker than for half to get the idea they need not work because the other half will feed them, and the other half to get the idea it does no good to work since someone else receives the rewards."

The annual meeting of the SPJST Lodge No. 6 was held Sunday, December 5, 1982 at 3 p.m.

Our meeting was called to order

by Vice President Rose Uptmor.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Terry Hykel and Kevin Dobecka.

Terry then recited the SPJST Pledge. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our beloved Sister Therese Dobecka and Brother Joseph Marek.

Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes of the previous meeting.

They were approved as read. Sister Barbara Hykel read correspondence from the American Sokol Organization, Christmas card from

00435 Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave 00388 the youth club report. The club is 00431 going to the Rest Home December 8th and they will be presenting their Christmas Party and give the residents their Christmas candy.

The youth members are still 00444 working on their Christmas 00344 projects. Most of them have been 00347 completed, but there are still a few 00430 things to be done. The youth will be 00407 selling tickets on their Mr. Coffee, 00086 home interior mirror and 00093 miscellaneous items. The drawing 00241 will be held at the Christmas Party 00278 December 19th after the Christmas 00417 program. The youth members are 00048 having a Christmas ornament 00075 contest today. The youth will be helping decorate the hall December 00299 10th before the social. All the youth 00374 members are urged to attend Friday 00049 to prepare for our Christmas 00080 program. Kevin Dobecka brought 00092 00217 the birthday cake.

Board of Trustees' report was 00219 given by Brother Aubrey Uptmor. 00346 The cookers for the kitchen were 00400 ordered and were ready to pick up. 00401 Some of the members worked on 00007 getting the bar renovated for the 00056 fire exit; also some of the members 00154 worked on finishing the kitchen.

00210 There was one new juvenile 00284 member, Amber Dawn Moore, 00297 accepted into our membership.

00335 The Christmas Party will be held 00393 December 19 starting at 3 p.m.; 00010 supper will be served at 5 p.m., with 00041 the Christmas program and Santa 00031 Claus to follow. Sister Cox mentioned at this time that our lodge expresses its thanks to our President Brother Clifton Trlica who was elected president of our lodge in December 1959. His many years of devoted service for our lodge has really been and is appreciated by all of us.

The election of officers for the coming year were held at this meeting.

Brother Charlie Hanus made a motion that officers for the coming year remain the same as in 1982.

Sister Mary Hanus seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Officers for 1983 are: PresidentClifton Trlica, Vice President-Edna Bohac, Secretary-Annie Mae Cox, Treasurer-Edna Bohac, Financial Secretary-Charlie Hanus and Reporter-Annie Mae Cox. Several minor items were brought up for discussion and there was no further business at this time, so we adjourned until the first Friday, March 4, 1983 at 7 p.m.

A delicious turkey/dressing supper was enjoyed after the meeting by twelve members and three guests.

We, of Lodge No. 26, give many thanks to Sister Mary Hanus for making the turkey/dressing for the meal and to all other members who brought a covered dish plus a sweet course of their choice.

All of us missed Brother and Sister Clifton Trlica at this occasion, and our prayers are spoken for Brother Trlica and his family.

Victoria Lodge No. 32 Election & Christmas Dinner The regular monthly meeting was held Wednesday, December 5th at the Citizens National Bank.

President Mike Ahlstrom called the meeting to order.

The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was led by Heather Spears, then a moment of silence for departed members was held.

Roll call of officers showed all officers present.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Adele Donalson. The treasurer's report was read by Treasurer Evelyn Horelka; both were approved as read.

A letter from the Supreme Lodge was read. It told of the need for more good sales representatives.

Final plans were made for the December 5th Christmas Dinner.

Election of officers for the year 1983 was held with all officers being re-elected, they were: Mike Ahlstrom-president, Ella Arnoldvice president, Adele Donalsonsecretary, Adolf Motal-financial secretary, Evelyn Horelka-treasurer, Katherine Wokaty-reporter, Frances Motal-youth leader and Stefani Spears-assistant youth leader.

Frances Motal provided delicious refreshments after the meeting.

The youth club made toothpick holders and Christmas decorations for the dinner party. The youth club had a miniature golf tournament at the Putt-Putt November 14th and Heather Spears won with the lowest score.

There were 21 adults present at this meeting. Members, thank you for coming.

December 5th, the Christmas Dinner for Lodge No. 32 was held at the Community Center Annex. The Annex was decorated with the Christmas motifs made by the youth club. The registration table was covered by a white lace tablecloth over red with a floral arrangement.

All the tables had floral arrangements, plus the toothpick holders made by the youth club. The serving table was loaded with smoked turkey and dressing, ham, salads, vegetable dishes and cranberry sauce. The dessert table had many different delicious choices on it.

After dinner, Santa Claus (Franklin Elles) gave the children Christmas stockings filled with fruit and candy. The children also had a chance to sit on Santa's lap and have their pictures taken.

A drawing for door prizes was held and the following adults won: Valeria Motal-poinsettia plant, Evelyn Horelka-sausages, Charles Hanzelka-Knotts Berry Farms Jellies, and Wesley Schmidt-A Neumann picnic ham.

The installation of officers for 1983 was held with the swearing in led by District VI Director Matt Vanek.

A donation by Leon Hosek was acknowledged by President. Mike Ahlstrom.

A total of eighty-eight adults and children attended and a good time was had by all.

We would like to extend a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the Supreme Lodge officers and to

Monday is the day I usually write 1,490.24 my weekly news from Lodge No. 88.

Today, I am empty-handed and not one single news item on hand, so here I am looking for something 125.25 about our old-timers. It was luck 0 that Johnnie Kosut, for some reason, 305 , 50 gave me an old issue of our Vestnik dated October 31, 1936 and glancing 0 over the pages I saw several familiar 0 names; 1936 was the Texas Centen0 , 656 . 96 nial and much was said about 492 . 7 3 October 28th, the liberation of Czechoslovakia after World War I. 0 On the front page is a letter from 0 the late I. J. Gallia who was elected 0 0 the first president in the 1897 109.94 convention held in La Grange, 956.27 Texas, with 22 lodges represented 155.79 and he served until 1907.

Also on the front page, a letter by 209.00 the late Jerry Baletka writing about 0 the 28th of October, the liberation of 0 Czechoslovakia. Brother Baletka 0 was a volunteer to serve in the 1,759.78 Czech Army in France with Frank 0 Mitcha and Frank Dvorak, all three 2,152.75 from Houston. The son, Richard 328.10 Baletka, is very proud of his father 20.06 and a member of Lodge 88.

Besides seeing several familiar 0 0 names in print, many others came to 0 my mind. In this issue are letters 28.38 from Charles Laznovsky of Ennis, 73.33 Louis Dressler of San Antonio, 1,557.00 Bozena Valcik and Sister Ondrusek, both of Dallas, Marie (Kulhanek) 0 79.15 Vala of Houston; these were a few who were interested in the welfare 0 of the SPJST plus_ the late Brother 0 Frank Steiner with his constructive 645.75 and sometimes controversial letters 0 concerning the SPJST and the late 0 Brother V. Studnicny, father of our I 97 . 91 Harriette Allison, in those days kept 0 Lodge No. 88 in the limelight 0 writing about everything

Dear Members and Friends: We are really enjoying some beautiful weather, but they say watch out.

Sunday, at Lodge 92 it wasn't only a beautiful day in weather, but the gathering was great, the food was delicious. The sisters who worked so hard in the kitchen deserve a "Big Thank you," for a job well done. All you who signed up and didn't come, you don't know what you missed because you heard nothing but praise and all are looking forward to next year which will be at Lodge 180 in Burleson. It was wonderful to see our District III Director Brother Sid and his wife, Sister Justine Pokladnik, also our Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Brother Leonard Mikeska and his wife, Sister Dorothy, in our midst.

A reminder of our meeting which was changed to Sunday, December 19th at 3 p.m. and will be election of officers.

The Sokol meeting will follow at 5 p.m.

Brother Jerry Milan, our president, was picked by the United States Gymnastics Federation to lead a group of four gymnasts and two coaches at the Coca Cola Invitational Tournament in London, England. He will be leaving in the morning (Wednesday) and be back around the 15th. We wish you a safe trip and we are all very proud of you.

Sister Mary Hale hasn't been feeling well and we hope she gets better soon. Brother Lad Maly is having tests and we hope all will be well.

We were sorry to hear that Sister Mary Hubenak of Lodge 92 was in the ICU at St. Joseph's Hospital and wish her a speedy recovery and also, of Lodge 92, Brother Kenneth Krivanek is undergoing tests. Best of luck, Kenneth! To all the sick we wish you a speedy recovery.

Remember, our Christmas Party Thursday, December 17 at 7:30 p.m., and the sisters are asked to bring goodies for the social.

Also, remember the New Year's Eve with Jerry Max Lane.

News

Dear Members, Relatives, Friends, SL Officers and Editor R. Sefcik: Hello to all of you from Pasadena Lodge 172. We are indeed so proud of our Grand Opening held November 7, 1982. Down deep in our hearts all of us don't have anymore room left to say "thank you" to who came from so far away to help celebrate a day of remembrance in generations to come; some came from as far as Caldwell, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Victoria, West and even from Oklahoma.

This was the greatest day ever held in the history of Pasadena, Texas for celebrating an occasion such as ours. Our big thanks is extended to so many brothers and sisters in Czech costumes, our heritage brought from Czechoslovakia.

Although it's a month ago since we, at Lodge 172, held our Grand Opening, we don't forget things so easily; we will treasure the very good memories of this eventful celebration and, even at doomsday, we are going to fight for our heritage days to stay alive forever.

Everything at the dedication went over beautifully, however, we were concerned about everyone's presence because the weather before the celebration was rain, rain and more rain and we want to apologize for the inconvenience to anyone; if it wasn't for God's nature, I am sure everything would have been finished and we would have had the red carpet spread out for all of you, so do forgive us; otherwise everything else went over well including the fine entertainment.

Both of our orchestras were wonderful with their fine music by Donnie Wavra and his Hi-Liters, also Neal Hart with his country/ western music as well as variety type. We hope all of you had a great time.

Those on the program who participated in the big Czech Concert Orchestra of Lodge 88 conducted by Brother Rudy Dybala was great, thanks, Rudy! Also, the Choral Club, Sokol gymnasts, Czech Heritage Singers of Galveston, the Country Cloggers also were greatly admired by the thousand-plus people. Thanks to all of you and do come see us real soon. I believe there were people attending our dedication from half of Texas because our lodge home was kept full from start to finish.

covered-dish dinner and dance which starts at 6:30 p.m. and the dance starts at 9 p.m. and lasts until 1 a.m., with music by the famous Fabulous Six of Pflugerville, Texas who play ballroom and variety music, also BYOB and set-ups will be available at our big new bar and eats will also be available in our beautiful new kitchen; the food that will be served by some lovely ladies.

Ladies, don't forget to bring a covered dish and invite everyone to come to our December 18th dinner and dance beginning at 6:30 p.m. We are inviting all of you to attend and eat with us and don't forget to dance afterward; come eat with us! (The meal will consist of sausage with sauerkraut, potatoes, etc.)

Remember, we are selling tickets to the New Year's Eve dance so don't forget to purchase your ticket(s) before it's too late; tickets are selling for $12.50 per person or $25 per couple; there will be no reservations taken, it will be "first come, first served" basis at our "little dome."

By now many of you probably know that our lodge is the second biggest in Texas so invite your relatives and friends to the New Year's Eve dance when the famous well-known Lee Roy Matocha of Fayetteville, Texas will provide good polkas and waltzes and other variety music.

Lodge 172 will be host to our District V spring meeting sometime in the new year, 1983.

We are so sorry to hear about so many sick people including two of my blood relatives: namely, Marie Hanzelka (my sister) and Frank Mikeska (my brother) who is still sick and under doctor's care being watched very closely at home; but my sister, Mrs. Hanzelka, is in the Gulf Coast Memorial Hospital in Wharton, Texas in the Intensive Care Unit for the last two weeks not doing so well. Also, a good friend of ours for a decade is sick who is a retired school teacher, principal and superintendent: Brother Walter Wasicek, formerly of East Bernard, Texas.

I read in one of the organ papers (KJT NEWS) that President Amos Pavlik and numerous others are sick; we are so sorry about all of you being sick; we at Lodge 172 are not forgetting anyone, also those who are in intensive care, .or in good health at Homes for the Aged. Best of health and happiness is wished to all of you and, with God's blessing, may you all have a quick recovery.

Dear Members, For you members who didn't show up for the joint Christmas Party at Lodge 92 Sunday the 5th you really missed a great party, a very good dinner and a lot of fun. The 183 members wish to thank the 92 members one more time for hosting the party this year and for all of the hard work they put into making it such a success; also for the fraternal spirit shared by all of the members present.

Henry Rejcek's band did a great job and kept the people on the dance floor and, at least half of them,

swinging like Jane Mansfield or something like that.

We wish to thank the Supreme Lodge officers and wives who were there for taking time to come and be with us for the first joint Christmas party; next year we are all looking forward to going to Lodge 180 in Burleson for an even bigger Christmas party.

The next event at Lodge 183 will be the New Year's Eve party and dance so mark your calendar and`be there. Music will be by Charlie's Polka Banda All of you polka fans bring all of your friends and neighbors; let's have a ball at the "ole" hall.

The lodge banquet and awards with the Italian dinner has been moved to January 22nd because of difficulty in getting all of the awards made and because of the Christmas parties and election of officers on the 12th; those of the members who were in charge of the banquet asked for more time to get everything in order, and make a much better party.

All some people want is a loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and thou, but by the end of the night they put it a different way — a bagel, booze and youze.

December 2nd our annual Christmas Party was held in the banquet room at Wyatts Cafeteria, Wynnewood Village in Oak Cliff. It was very well-attended. Guests who were introduced at our party were as follows: Lorrine Ware, Helen Kral, Julie Kral, Harriet Roberts, George Skotak, Phil Reames, Frank Mach and Frank Noska.

After lunch, a short meeting was held. President Lydia Dirkx welcomed everyone. Secretary and treasurer reports were given and then Rose Parma read 'Thank You' cards from Anna King, Frances Konakovsky, Salvation Army and the Veterans Hospital. Sunshine Committee Chairman reported that "Get Well" cards were mailed to Anna Belle Bubak and Ella Bartos.

Gift Committee chairman reported that a gift was taken to Anna Belle Bubak. Birthday Card chairman sent greetings to the following members who celebrate birthdays in December: Frances Barfield, Evelyn Cechan, Linda Kartous, Vickie Kohn, Mary Kubacak, Adelle Lesikar, Agnes Mach, Florence Peressenyi, Floy Pokladnik, Bessie Reames, Ann Skrabanek, Lillian Spain and Frances Sparks. Lydia reminded us that, at our February meeting, a covered dish luncheon will be served. Bring your favorite salad, vegetable or whatever.

Hostess Chairman, Rose Bednar, thanked all the ladies who served as hostesses during this year.

Bertha Podhrasky reminded everyone of the Christmas Party December 19th starting at 2 p.m. at the Sokol Hall.

Under new business, Liddie Pavelka made a motion that we purchase an ad in the Sokol Slet Book. Motion seconded by Rose Kopecek. A half page ad will be purchased.

Beautiful plaques were given to Ann Zvolanek and Ella Bartos for their devotion and service to our Circle. Ann was presented her plaque at our party and Ella will be receiving her plaque soon. Ella has been at home recovering from knee surgery and was unable to attend our party. We missed having her with us.

Donations to our Circle were made by the following: Frances Konakovsky in memory of all our departed sisters, Mary Kubacak in memory of her husband John, and Rose Kopecek in memory of her husband, Thomas.

The George Skotaks are happy to announce the birth of another greatgranddaughter, Allison Gail, who was born November 16th to Sydney and Johnnie Broyles of Arlington, Texas. Congratulations!!

Our Christmas Party wouldn't have been complete without the singing of Christmas Carols. A piano was available so we all gathered around to sing our favorites both in Czech and English. Gifts were then exchanged, and Zdenka Skotak passed around some delicious treats she made for us. The ladies who were in charge of the table decorations certainly did a splendid job. All in all it was a very wonderful Christmas Party and those of you who did not attend certainly missed a lot of fun.

Since Christmas is so near, let me close by giving you my message. I am certainly far from a poet but this is my own little poem for you:

SANTA VISITS LODGE 20 YC EARLY

NO. 17, NEW TABOR

Dear Readers, The New Tabor Youth Club has been finishing off 1982 with many activities. October was a very busy month for us. We painted Christmas ornaments and other items and participated at the Halloween Flea Market at the Courthouse Square in Caldwell. The youth club members came dressed in Halloween costumes and we all had a good time until the rain came and we all had to pack up and go home.

We also went to two Halloween parties hosted by different lodge youth clubs. The Dime Box Youth Club had a hayride and spookhouse.

Twenty-one of our members attended and were all scared by the remarkable spookhouse we toured.

Many of the youth went through the house twice for the extra excitement. We were treated with hot dogs and cold drinks after the hayride.

Halloween Day, twenty-four youth traveled to the Bryan SPJST Hall to be thrilled once again by their great Halloween carnival and spookhouse. All the members had a great time bobbing for apples, fishing at the wishing well, throwing darts and pitching balls. The spookhouse topped off the day's events.

Thanks to Lodges No. 13 and 39 for providing us with a great time.

In November we also had a busy month. We had our regular monthly meeting and planned our Christmas program and party. After the meeting, we went to the Leisure Lodge Nursing Home and presented a program. We sang some songs and visited with the patients.

We had a special called-meeting to make final plans for our party and program. We made Christmas trees out of pine cones. Everyone's tree was pretty. We played games and had lunch.

December 5, 1982 we had our monthly meeting. We decided to go caroling to houses of the elderly members of our lodge. We also plan to give to the Mystery Santa Fund.

We decorated flower pots and planted flowers in them. At 6:30 p.m. we participated in the Lodge's Annual Memorial Service. Eleven of the girls lit candles for the members of the lodge who passed away in 1982. The entire youth club presented a Christmas Program to the large crowd who attended the services. The ladies of the lodge made turkey and dressing which we all enjoyed.

Dear Readers, Last night (December 5th), Santa came to Lodge 20 in Granger. It was early, but all of the little children enjoyed his bags of goodies and getting to talk to him; some of the boys and girls had a few hints of things they would like for him to bring them, others couldn't think of anything.

The hall was decorated beautifully with cedar, red paper streamers, gold balls, and a blinking Christmas tree. Red candles were lighted on each table for the evening meal. Mrs. Pope, Mrs. Strmiska and youth club members did the decorations. Thank you for the lovely decorations. Also, we would like to thank the mother lodge members and Food Committee for the delicious barbecue meal, with all the trimmings. It was one of the nicest, Christmas parties we have ever had.

Our youth group, assisted by our leaders, Santa and former members led the singing of Christmas carols before dinner.

We will hold a short business meeting and go caroling at a local rest home'later this month.

Final plans were made for .our Christmas Party which is going to be held December 17th at 6 p.m. in the Taiton Community Center.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Seaton Lodge No. 47, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister DOROTHEA MARTINEK, age 58, of Killeen, who passed away Sunday, October 24, 1982, in a local hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Frankfort, West Germany and was married to Charlie Martinek in 1954. She moved to Temple in 1961 and then to Killeen in 1963 when he retired from the military. He preceded her in death.

Memorial services were held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 26 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Killeen. Mrs. Martinek's body was cremated and buried in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, where her husband is buried. Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home of Killeen was in charge of the arrangements.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone, wish to express our deepest sympathy, on behalf of our officers and entire membership, to the bereaved family of LUDIE A. BEDRICH age 79, who passed away Sunday, December 5, 1982, in an Austin hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Bedrich was born in Bell County near the Cyclone community. She attended Cyclone School and was confirmed at the Ocker Brethren Church. At the time of her death, Mrs. Bedrich was a member of the Seaton Brethren Church. Following her marriage to Edwin J. Bedrich, she moved to Oklahoma where she resided for approximately five years before returning to Bell County. She resided in Bell County until after the death of her husband when she moved to Austin. Mrs. Bedrich was residing in Austin at the time of her death.

Mrs. Bedrich was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin J. Bedrich; an infant son and her parents, Paul and Marie Wychopen.

Survivors are a son, James E. Bedrich, of Austin; a brother, Albert Wychopen, of Temple; two sisters, Lottie Fritz and Lillie Janek, both of Temple; and two grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday, December 7, 1982, at the Seaton Brethren Church with the Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating.

Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

There is melody in the air, resounding in song. Christmas is the perfect time for musical expression.

Many popular holiday songs were originally written to impart the knowledge of the meaningful and merriment of Christmas. These songs became known as "carols", derived from the French word "carole", meaning round dance.

Early carols were simple songs with primitive dance accompaniment.

The first documented American Christmas carol is thought to have been written for the Huron Indians

by St. John Brebeuf. This carol, now translated to English, remains part of Christmas song and dance in modern Quebec, Canada.

The custom of Christmas caroling dates back to the 16th century when singing groups traveled from hometo-home, wishing friends and neighbors the best of the season.

Though greeting cards have replaced the necessity of in-person greetings, the tradition of door-todoor caroling is still widely practiced today.

Group singing is now included in community choir programs, etc., emphasizing the importance of Christmas carols and their contributions of the holiday season.

How The Most Famous Carol Was Given To The World

Santa Comes To America

One of the most revered Christmas carols in the whole world emerged from the small village of Obendorf in the Austrian Alps.

During Christmas Eve in 1818, Rev. Joseph Mohr listened to Franz Gruber, the church organist, attempt to repair his prized instrument which was broken beyond repair. It seemed there would be no music for the traditional midnight services for Christmas Eve. Some time later, Rev. Mohr decided to venture through the village in the night's bitter weather while suddenly his thoughts flooded with a starlit night in Bethelehem.

Somehow, he began to repeat, "Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright!" After he arrived home, the Father seized a piece of paper to write several verses with his pen.

Meanwhile he told Gruber to write some music for my new poem: "Franz, simple music you can play on the guitar, organ or no organ, we are going to have Christmas Eve music." For the same evening, the two men, accompanied only by a guitar, sang the loveliest carol, "Silent Night."

The acceptance of the carol, given to the world through the voices of some small children, was immediate and widespread. For all, the beauty of "Silent Night" remains part of the magic and tradition of the holiday season. ***

Just like most everyone else, Saint Nick prospered after he came to America.

In Europe, before he reached these shores, Saint Nick was a tall, angular man who rode a bony gray mare. He hadn't been in America long, however, before he had a new name, a new face, figure and a new and better mode of transportation.

The early English settlers in this country started Santa's "new look" process. They adopted the legendary figure from the Dutch, but couldn't pronounce "Saint Nickolous." The best they could do was "Santa Kalouf," which was corrupted to "Santa Claus."

In 1809, Washington Irving in his "Knickerbockers History of New York," changed Santa's physical appearance by describing him as a jolly fellow with a broad-brimmed hat and huge britches. He also taught St. Nick to smoke a pipe, and traded his hay burner for a wagon.

Clement Moore in his famous poem, "The Visit From Saint Nicholas," went even further. He gave Saint Nick a sleigh, twinkling eyes, cheeks like roses, nose like a cherry and a round little belly.

Future writers may try to trade Prancer and Dancer off for a jet ship and trim down Santa's waist line. It will be a tough job, for, though he isn't streamlined, Santa pleases the young folks and that's mighty important.

The Slavonic Benevolent Order of The State of Texas established a Scholarship Fund in 1982 to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by SPJST members, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in youth and in our economic and social progress.

MILITARY SERVICE AND ILLNESS If a scholarship recipient enters military service, the scholarship will be held in reserve for a period of up to six (6) months after the date of his/her release from service. Illness or injury that causes a delay in acceptance or continuance of a scholarship will also be considered good cause for holding an award in reserve.

Applicants who are college undergraduates must submit official transcripts of past college work with their application.

The Committee's decisions will be announced before the beginning of the fall semester.

TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP Four-year programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

ADMINISTRATION The SPJST Supreme Lodge has full authority to establish the rules and regulations governing the Scholarship Program or to amend them as it deems necessary. Administration and financing of the programs are the exclusive responsibility of the SPJST.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE

WHO IS ELIGIBLE Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. It must remain in force during the tenure of the scholarship.

Scholarship winners may attend any college in the United States of America accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

The Committee has exclusive jurisdiction in selecting scholarship winners. It acts in an advisory capacity to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The SPJST assumes no responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs, or debts of scholarship winners or scholarship applicants and will not be liable therefore in any manner.

The SPJST will award scholarships in the following amounts: Four-year program .. . $1,000.00 Freshman Year 5500.00 Sophomore Year $500.00 Junior Year $500.00 Senior Year

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

SELECTION Scholarships are awarded by a Committee selected by the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. The Committee consists of persons who have a recognized standing in the field of education and who are not associated in any other way with the SPJST or the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

PAYMENT OF AWARDS Funds covering scholarship awards are remitted direct to the accredited college selected by the recipient as a payment toward the required tuition and fees.

RESPONSIBILITY OF SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
