The "Correction" (actually explanation) two weeks ago was made at the request of Brother Otto Hanus so that our readers would not mistakenly think his wife, Sister Matilda Hanus was now at home.

There was no other intent. ***

November 11th — In many places throughout our United States, citizens paid tribute to the veterans who gave their supreme sacrifice in four Wars.

A memorial service also took place in the city of West; 200 war veterans, area citizens and West school students assembled around the memorial marker at the West City Hall and paid tribute to the war veterans on Veteran's Day. Officials from the West VFW Post 4819, American Legion Post 478 and the Navy Fleet Reserve of the Central Texas Branch 240 joined the ceremony, which included patriotic music and speeches.

Mr. Milton Morgan, coordinator of the third annual occasion, presented the opening address and introduced the war veterans in attendance.

Those from WWI recognized were F. G. Gerik, Frank J. Hlavaty, and Joseph Holasek, who is a member of SPJST Lodge 36 and former longtime Vestnik publisher.

The West High School Junior Historians took part inthe impressive program which included: raising of the United States Flag by Darrin Banik of Lodge 35 and Bub Sefcik of Lodge 54, singing of the national anthem, reciting the Filedge of Allegiance plus presenting a tribute to the West vity cini veterans. ent VFW local post officials presed hw several short speeches, whicas followed by several pat riotis numbers by the West Trojan Ban d, under the supervision of Ban d Director Jack Felts.

Jerry Hutyra, commander of t he American Legion and anPJS ST member of Lodge 54, spoke to the audience which commemorated those who had risen four ti nies to the challenge of war. Broth Hutyra emphasized that th e veterans should look to the fu tre uer

because the United States confronts many countless challenges.

The laying of the wreath at the memorial marker included Emil Fridel of the local VFW Post, and Richard McGee with the Navy Fleet Reserve.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Morgan asked everyone to do their part in participating in the community's patriotic ceremonies.

At 11 a.m., Brother Charles Nemec of Lodge 36, West, played taps, which ended the memorial service. ***

Often we should recognize that we form many family ties throughout our life. There is the family that gives us our name, one that we may group in, and one in which we, ourselves, become parents. In addition, we must include the great family that makes our country, the family of different fraternal circles and/or civic groups, and the family in which we work.

However, one thing we must realize is that each of us is a member in the SPJST. We can consider ourselves fortunate to belong to this outstanding organization that has achieved the respect and gratitude of a great many individuals. For more than 85 years, its members have participated in building a financially sound and secure fraternal life insurance Society.

November 25th — Thanksgiving Day will be a genuinely American holiday for many of us; it is one that has roots in our nation's earliest history. Moreover, this holiday has always had a deep significance for most of us; since the first Thanksgiving Day was observed, it has been traditionally a time of special meaning for families and friends.

While most of you gather to celebrate this all-American holiday, my best wishes go to our members and families on Thanksgiving Day. Although the word "thanks" has six letters, its meaning is endless.

May each of you have a happy holiday, and I hope you will pause on this special occasion and observe your surroundings for we truly have much for which to be thankful! ***

We are in the season of "Thanksgiving" and will soon be in the season of "Peace on Earth and Good Will to All Men." This past week the TV news brought this announcement: "The United States sold $7 billion dollars of arms to other nations last year, Russia was second and France the third. The following year it will be tripled, We will sell 20 billion dollars worth of arms worldwide." This editor wonders — does the world really want peace? ***

The SPJST was founded on the idea of extending a helping hand to those whose lives were touched by tragedy in a new country. From this idea came the life insurance program which has made the SPJST the organization we know today. In keeping with the ideals of our founders, the Supreme Lodge will again issue a call to its members to support and assist those less fortunate ones in our world.

Therefore, it instructed the Corporate Planning Committee to review various charities and worthy causes and present its recommendation to the Supreme Lodge when it meets in January. This committee consists of Bernie Gebala, chairman, Leonard Mikeska, Ben Trcalek, Sid Pokladnik, and myself as secretary.

Another worker spoke on the programs for the Elderly and Disabled. She stated that 80% of the patients in nursing homes are paid for by State funds. Many of these could remain in their homes and familiar surroundings if the various programs for the elderly had enough funds and support from the rest of us. This would surely be a savings of our tax dollars.

These programs are in-home care, meals-on-wheels, independent living centers, and the purchase of equipment such as Emergency Response Systems, phones for the deaf, baby crib monitors, and Day Care Centers for those who are unable to be home alone while members of the family are away at work. The needs begging for our attention are independent living centers for the elderly and the handicapped, food pantries for those in need of all ages, the purchase of equipment, etc.

The CPC will continue to survey the needs of the old, the abused, the suffering, and the handicapped and will make its recommendation to the Board soon. Any suggestions from you readers will be considered.

I hope every SPJST member will open his/her eyes to the needs of those less fortunate ones around us wherever we live and remember that: "there, but for the grace of God, go I." Everyone will soon know the SPJST as an organization which cares about people and works to offer assistance in many forms to those less fortunate ones.

Before I go to my remarks proper, I would like to introduce those fellow members of the Supreme Lodge who are with us today. First, my wife Dorothy; Vice President Bernie Gebala; Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and his wife, Dorothy; Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, and Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir. *** We have Directors Ben Trcalek from District I, Sid & Justine Pokladnik from District III, Louis Hanus from District V, Matt & Henrietta Vanek from District VI, and Thelma & Eugene Hrncir from District VII. The editor, while not a member of the Supreme Lodge, is elected by the convention—Rudy & Maxine Sefcik. We are pleased to have all of you with us today.

Engaging in a bit of hyperbole, I'd like to state that the journey from the J. C. Penney Store to the "Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria" has been an arduous and difficult one, but certainly a dramatic one — definitely an accomplishment of major proportions.

I would respectfully suggest to you with all the sincerity that I can muster that during the coming months and years when you are going to have (hopefully) a considerable human traffic flow through this beautiful new edifice

that you take advantage and capitalize on this traffic and solicit as many new members as you possibly can. Records show that you have a total of 355 certificates in Lodge 172, 267 of which are premium-paying, 80 paid-up, and 8 JTs. To continue the general SPJST policy, we ask that you continue to be selective, and, of course, you are well aware of the fact that you are going to need a considerable core or cadre of workers to keep this facility operating and you are going to need all the physical help and cooperation that you can get. You are going to have to have "Indians" to do a lot of chores at this facility — chores and duties which will not do themselves.

These are responsibilities that are oftentimes not glamorous but heaven knows very necessary for continued success. We are all well aware of the fact that in the past few months many of you in Lodge 172 have been busy and preoccupied with the building of this structure and that is understandable. (I'll not name them. I might leave someone out and you know who you are).

Some of you have pushed yourself almost to the point of physical exhaustion — however, now that you are embarking on the next phase of your lodge's existence one of your goals should be to increase your membership. We all know how difficult it is to solicit new members in our local lodges without the advantages of a structure such as this, however, now that it is an accomplished fact you need to take maximum advantage of it by increasing your membership rolls.

There's a gold mine out there!

There are two or three ways this can be accomplished. One is to have your sales representatives "plug" and publicize the facility and its many advantages. You have 4 SRs; seek additional ones, if you need to.

They need to extol the many comforts and benefits available here. These handsome facilities should be a natural attraction for new members and heaven knows the line of SPJST insurance products that we have to offer are among the best available. Secondly, the leadership needs to devise some method or procedure whereby people coming to this facility for the first time can be made aware of the potentials of membership and insurance benefits. It should not be a one-time visit.

We operate under special laws, both state and federal, that give us many advantages. Let's respect these privileges and not fail to use them to the max.

On behalf of the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST and our total statewide membership, let me extend our congratulations on your achieving this milestone. We know that it has not been easy. Since we were involved in some of the negotiations, we are well aware of the many ramifications and perhaps frustrations that you experienced along the way. Despite many hardships, handicaps, and seemingly endless obstacles, you have finally come to this point in your fraternal existence. You have overcome those obstacles and handicaps, but you must be aware of the difficult road ahead. No one has said it's going to be easy. I can tell you from experience at other lodges that probably your biggest problem is going to be getting your members

There will no doubt be an adequate number of "chiefs" but unless you have the "Indians" to back them up the "tribe" will falter and be weakened. In Czech we have the saying Bez pra,ce nejsou ani koldee. The same will be true here; it will not be merely a matter of coming here and enjoying the physical plant and the social benefits— someone is going to have to "cook the beans", "bake the biscuits", "scrub the floor", and such other mundane chores as keeping the bathrooms clean and functioning.

It will take the concerted effort of all your members to achieve the above. We hope that you are up to it.

We are confident that you are. We have faith in the hope that you will not falter. When the going gets tough, don't despair. As I heard a speaker say recently, if you study the life of Abraham Lincoln you will know the many personal reverses, defeats, and set-backs that he endured before finally being elected president of the United States. Not many people know that he had as many defeats and reverses as he had successes, but the secret in his ultimate triumph was that after each such defeat and set-back he refused to stay down and went at it again. We call this steadfastness and perseverance. Brothers and sisters of Lodge 172, you will need both .. . we wish you well ...

** District Director Louis Hanus: Mr. Chairman, Dan Berry, Mr. Isbell the Honorable Mayor of the City of Pasadena; Officers and Directors of the Supreme Lodge, Members and Friends of our SPJST Society: It is indeed a signal honor for me to be present for this historical event taking place in Pasadena, Texas, witnessing the grand opening of the new home of Rozkvet Pasadena, Lodge 172 SPJST. Now I must tell you that my remarks today will be like an SPJST skirt; long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest.

This new lodge home is located southwest of Houston on Preston Road, which is in the heart of a prestigious residential and business growth area in the progressive city of Pasadena. Pasadena has a population of 110,000 people and a per capita income that is rated second in the State of Texas.

Many of us, as members of the SPJST Society, are aware that the members of Lodge 172 have devoted their free time benevolently, and who gave many, many extra hours the past several months to bring, to their membership and to our Society, a successful end to the reality of a dream come true.

Before the building project started the faithful few members knew they needed 80 percent guts, and 20 percent work, and since the building is now completed the ratio changes somewhat — now it has to be 110 percent work, 80 percent guts and a lot of blood, sweat and tears.

The loyalty and determination, as presented by the accomplishment of this new building, reflects a form of valuable contribution to your membership, to the SPJST Society,

the City of Pasadena and to the future of your success.

The members of Lodge 172 passed the first stage several years ago when they received an SPSJT charter, the second stage of buying land during Victor Peter's administration, and the third stage of the completion of this beautiful lodge building during the present administration of President Dan Berry. Now your next stage, and one of paramount importance, is to tell yourself and your brother and sister collegues that you, as members of Lodge 172, must continue to be dedicated fraternalists to the highest degree. Once you have this feeling embedded in your mind, you will have created a fraternal jumping board that will give you courage and strength and as fraternalists will give you the motivation to overcome your trials and tribulations and the necessary determination to face any hardships you may encounter. It will make you, as a member of Lodge 172, see and comprehend that changes are a must in your lodge from time to time and if such changes are made, then they, of course, must be purposeful changes. When this happens in your mind, you become a true and loyal fraternalist in the SPJST and you then possess the art of fraternalism at its best— by working together, and mutually staying together. By working together, staying together, and believing and caring for one another as fraternalists will give you the assurance that your lodge success will never end. So, let's remember this great day. The opening of your new lodge home is a new beginning and keeping together will be your progress and working together your success.

Officers, Supreme Lodge Brothers and Sisters, and Guests: On behalf of my fellow officers and members of Lodge 172, I welcome you into our new home. I apologize for the parking problems.

Many of you have contributed to our Building Fund and I thank you very much. We, of Lodge 172, like to think of ourselves as one big happy family, so when any of you are in Pasadena please consider Lodge 172 as your home too and part of our family.

This is a great day for Lodge 172; many of us have sacrificed our personal lives and dedicated our time and energy to this project. I would like to thank each of our members for their devotion and wish I had the time to introduce each one of them to you, but for now I would like to introduce my fellow officers: 1st, I would like to have you meet someone who with the help of 1001 Excedrins helped me get thru the nights, my friend, my lover, my wife, Margie; our 1st Vice President and master painter, Jerry Dressler and his wife, Victoria; our 2nd Vice President and Jack of all trades, Julius Zella and his wife, Leona; our secretary and generous lady and loved by us all, Vlasta Machann and her husband, Joe; next we have a nice lady who looks entirely too young to be a fifty-year member, our Financial Secretary Lorine Wiley and her husband, Doug; I

don't know why this next lady has not gone bananas trying to keep us within our budget, but she hasn't— our Treasurer Tennie Walla and her husband, Willie; our Board of Trustees who kept an eye on the jobsite as members of the Building Committee — Chairman Norman Tofte and his wife, Amelia, Tommy Wallace and his wife, Helen, Easther Kowalski and her husband, William, Joe Krenek and his wife, Henrietta; our guide and my mother-in-law, Easther Mikeska and her husband, Johnny; if this guy had not retired and devoted most of his time and energy to this project we would not be here today, although I understand he recently purchased stock in the Rolaids Co.—Building Committee Chairman, Albert Risinger and his wife, Tommie; last, but certainly not least, the two people who 13 years ago got all of this started and have worked diligently toward this day — our first full time president and current lodge historian, Victor Peter and his wife and founder of Lodge 172, Lillia Mae. This is the beginning of a new era for Lodge 172, so in closing I have taken a poem from the Ritual and Handbook I would like to read to my fellow members: "Don't Quit" When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must—but don't you quit.

Thank you and have a nice day with us! *** Presiding Officer Albert Risinger: This beautiful building today stands as a monument to a small dedicated group of SPJST members of Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, Texas.

As building chairman of this group, I am grateful for the support and encouragement they gave me. This was not a one-man commitment, but a joint effort by the faithful few of this fraternal lodge.

Today we give praise and recognition to those whose foresight, and judgment, plus determination, brought us to this day of celebration. What we have to do now is give of our experience and knowledge to encourage those who are now charged with the responsibility of making this a growing, prosperous Lodge No. 172; also make this a shining example to this community and all fraternal organizations, especially SPJST Lodges as to just how much can be done when all members have a common goal.

We have overcome adversity, from our own city of Pasadena, to Temple. We lost several battles but the determined few of Lodge 172 won the "war".

I would be remiss in my duty today if I did not give special thanks to those people who physically stood shoulder to shoulder and sometimes worn backsides with me in seeing that this building was completed today — Bro. Jerry Dressler, 1st V.P.; Bro. Julius Zella, 2nd V.P.; Bros. Tommy Wallace and Joe Krenek, Board of Trustees. Last but

not least, the most encouraging and understanding person in my life, my wife Tommie. Thanks to all of Lodge 172! ** Post Dedication Observations.

While there have been no official estimates, I would estimate that approximately 1,000 people were in attendance at the opening and dedication of Lodge 172. Granted that the audience was somewhat a transient one with people coming and going, I still believe that the overall attendance approached the 1,000 mark, especially when you consider the fact that the seating capacity of the hall is 1,000. I saw no empty seats.

By almost any measure and standard the day was a success attendance-wise. We certainly hope it was financially. As might be expected with any venture of this sort, there is always a nucleus of workers and people responsible for the day's activities. This was no exception. A number of individuals in this category were introduced. I remember the Sunday that Lodge 172 was chartered in the old Petrotex Building in Pasadena on the 30th of November 1969. In the intervening years, the members met in private homes, more recently in what was a former J. C. Penney store on East Shaw, not too far from the new lodge location.

As was pointed out, the members of 172 have now entered a new era and embarked on a new venture which will require the cooperation and help of many people. The road ahead, along with its frustrations and joys, will test the mettle of the members. In recent years, other new lodges have traveled the same terrain. Those where the members joined together to meet a common objective are the ones that have been most successful. In no case has it been particularly easy. Flag Bearer, Sister Theresa Dobecka, came forward to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance; she also recited the SPJST Motto.

Sister Rose Parma, president of Lodge 130, extended a warm welcome to all attending the meeting. She used a phrase the Spanish often use, "Our Home is your Home."

Wednesday, November 24, 1982 — VESTNIK/5 October 11 and 12 a historic meeting of the SPJST was held in La Grange, Texas at the Court House in the Judge's Chamber. In 1897, in this same location, the SPJST was, born. Although it was a very rainy day, an impressive meeting was held with several prominent city officials in attendance.

Brother Sid emphasized the importance of the By-Laws and the need for members to read and study them. The convention is not far off.

If anyone has any suggestions or new ideas, he or she need to get in touch with the By-Laws Committee so they can be brought up and discussed during the convention in 1984.

He also commented on the 8% increase in refunds to the local lodges this year. He advised members to assist the sales representatives in securing new memberships so their lodges can continue to grow. Also, the cash value of the premium refund has been increased this year from 2% to 3% effective on the anniversary date of the policy.

Brother Sid had high praise for the computer being used in the Home Office, and also for the office personnel who are in charge of its operation. Information for the Vestnik can now be compiled much quicker, thus saving a considerable amount of money and time.

The benefits derived from Supreme Lodge officers and directors attending the National Fraternal Congress of America was $1,562.78 termed as an asset. Brother Joe Ondrusek, 2nd vice president, read the list of departed members. The membership stood in a moment of silence in tribute to our departed brothers and sisters.

Brother Bernard Hlavaty, Sr., secretary of District III, stated there was no correspondence since the last meeting.

In his report on the two Rest Homes, Brother Sid reported both homes had waiting lists and both were operating nicely. A committee is looking into the cost of adding a new wing to the home in Needville.

Brother Sid had high praise for the administrators of both homes who are responsible for keeping things running smoothly. With the conclusion of Brother Sid's report, President Wood recessed the meeting for a lunch break.

After lunch, Youth Counselor Sister Bessie Petr welcomed the ladies, gentlemen, and all the youngsters. Since the last District III meeting, a lot of activity has been going on with our youth.

Chris Coker of Lodge 84 danced and sang an Indian song. Stephanie Becan of Lodge 84 displayed her talents by singing two selections, "Where is Love?" and also, "Tomorrow" from the musical "Annie." Stephanie also performed at the Texas Fraternal Congress Convention in Kerrville. Laura Pottkotter of Lodge 130 did a recitation "Things About My Sister Susy." Amber Ondrusek of Lodge 84 entertained by singing a song and twirling her baton. The program was well-presented and the highlight of the afternoon. All the youngsters performed exceptionally well. Elgin Plans Installation of Officers The regular meeting of Lodge 18 was called to order by President Roy Simank.

Cyclone Finalizes Plans For Christmas Party Our meeting of Lodge No. 24 was called to order by President Dan Sebek.

The flag was presented by Melanie Zavodny and Kristie Waits who then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We also remained standing in a moment of silence for our deceased members, Sister Dorothy Buckhusen, Sister Dorothy Pace, Brother Johnnie Lewis and Brother Henry Skrabanek.

On the sick list we have Brother Charlie Bedrich and Sister Carol Chervenka who had minor surgery; to them, and all who may be ill, we wish a speedy recovery.

Secretary Pat Vanicek read the correspondence: thank-you notes from the Dorothy Beckhusen family for the flowers, Dorothy Pace family for the money donation to their chosen charity and from the Bell County Society for Crippled Children for the monetary donation.

President Sebek welcomed the visitors who were Mary Dornhoefer and Pat (Mrs. Bill) Sebek.

We then went into our business part of the meeting. We first discussed the price of our New Year's Eve dance admission and the membership decided on $7.50 per person. We will have Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five playing so make your reservations by calling Leveda Geistman at 985-2436 or Doris Svoboda at 985-2402.

We finalized the plans for our Christmas Party which will be held Sunday, December 12th at 3 p.m., beginning with a program presented by the youth members. If you are bringing a child who doesn't belong to the youth club you may wish to bring a gift for that child because the youth club members are exchanging gifts. After the program we will have a treat-(traditional eggnog). At about 4 p.m. we will have a meal furnished by the lodge.

We purchased a new, larger floor buffer and we decided to donate the old one to the Rogers Fire Department.

These are new members, Veronica Sebek (signed up by Sales Representative Carol Chervenka), and transferees Melissa Hubnik, Kimberly Hubnik and Nancy Lou Hubnik, were accepted by the members; we welcome you to our lodge.

We then acted upon the salaries which were presented by the Salary Committee and the membership decided to accept their recommendation.

The November meeting was called to order by President Pflughaupt at 7:30 p.m. Flagbearer Lynn Pflughaupt presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which the members stood in silence and tribute to deceased members.

The minutes and all financial reports were read and approved.

Youth Leader Joyce Mynar reported on the animal sales; youth club meeting is the 14th when they will make Christmas items, which will be for sale; December youth club meeting is the 18th and Christmas Program the 20th at 7:30 p.m.

Sister Helen Hegwood reported the Choral Club performed at the opening of Lodge No. 172 on the 7th and they will not have rehearsals until further notice. They will perform at the Needville Rest Home December 18th.

Brother Hutchinson reported the Concert Orchestra also performed at Lodge No. 172 and Brother Kovanda has provided them with some new music.

Brother Willie Wehring reported the Social Night Committee making a donation of $500 to the Shriners and Burns Institute.

Board Chairman Royal Warnasch reported the board approving a donation to the Christmas Seal and accepting a bid to repair and modernize the pool system.

Czech Instructor Brother Souchek stated that, due to the coming holidays, the Czech class would start Monday, 1-3-83, but would not hold class on the nights of the monthly meeting. There will be no charge for the course.

Reporting on Benevolence, Sister Kosut reported 142 hours and $133 in expense as charity work for October and 1,133 hours as volunteer work done by members at the lodge in September.

District V Director Louis Hanus and District V President Tillie Helmcamp expressed their thanks and appreciation to Lodge 88 and all other lodges who came out and supported Lodge No. 172 in the opening of the new building.

Members reported sick were Frank Bravenec, Tim Kostom, L. A. Mikes, Lillie Spies and Leddie Kadera.

Brother Harry Rice and Sister Pat Neskorik read all the accepted proposals to the rules and regulations which will be voted upon at the annual meeting.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 132 members present. "Happy Birthday" was sung to members having birthdays and a list of anniversaries was read. Door prize winners were Sisters Flo. Taake, Irene Slovacek and Brother William Souchek with special Liberty Savings prize winner Sister Emily Bily. Refreshment donors were Brother and Sister Frank Slanina in honor of their anniversary.

Our next monthly meeting will be December 12th at 10 a.m. and the annual meeting will start immediately after the monthly meeting. Those registering before 10:30 a.m. will be given a free dinner.

Our Saturday night dance with music by the Ray Jurecka orchestra, as usual, had a fair attendance; the Chandelier Ballroom was not overcrowded but the lovely guests had a wonderful time. The ladies on the committee, as usual, wore evening gowns according to the dress code. Gus Gerlich was in charge and attended the box office.

His wife, Ann, dressed in a black gown trimmed with frilly white ruffles at the neckline and her wrist was just like a fashion plate. Ray Hagan was busy seating the guests and his spouse, Gladys, at the door, greeted the arriving guests dressed in a mauve-colored lace top and the The Czech Heritage Singers from Galveston singing numbers from their latest same color of a pleated skirt and album, under the direction of Rev. Paul Chovanec. wearing a beautiful necklace matching her dress. Benny Kocich was helping Ray and Staci, his wife, was at the door also beautifully dressed as usual. It's wonderful to have our committee members so pleasantly smiling in greeting the guests.

I was very sad to hear the bad news about our member, Herman Reed, and his wife, Lucille. Herman underwent surgery about a month ago and stayed in Heights Hospital for two weeks and was released to go home but after a weeks time he had to return and now is in the hospital; hope, by now, he is home, but during that time Lucille, his wife, met with an accident right at home; she fell and broke her hip and leg in three places and she was there all by herself. She struggled and made it to the phone to call her nephew and, luckily, he was at home and called the ambulance to the Methodist Hospital where she is now and Herman in Heights The Country Cloggers Dancers were part of the fine entertainment at Hospital. It is very hard to Lodge 172. understand; why does it happen to two lovely people like Herman and Lucille? We wish both to get well soon. Every Friday night they would come to the Blue Room and slowly enjoy their refreshments and enjoy the company of their friends. We miss you.

Last Thursday night, at the social, I missed the happy-go-lucky Millie Manack; she usually is with her friend, Martha Baxter, but Martha came alone so I thought she must be under the weather. That was not the case; Martha is enrolled in some night classes and keeps herself buried in books 'till Christmas, every Friday. Good Luck!

My daughter-in-law Della flew to Odessa last week to visit with her daughter and my granddaughter Sandy on her birthday. She "Important Portion" of the interior of Lodge No. 172, Pasadena. (Picture departed Sunday and returned Thursday. I am proud of Della, she submitted by V. P. Julius Zella) took up painting and is doing just great. Up to now she has several pictures and is finishing one for her Art Show.

Joe and Della Miksch with Ed and Ellen Miculka headed for the horse races across the border to Louisiana Sunday and came back the same day.

On the sick list were Alvin Hrna, recovering from knee surgery, Annie Merecka and Emil Merecka.

Brother Merecka passed away at a local hospital, November 10th. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his family. Brother Merecka had been ill for a number of years.

Minutes were read and approved.

Reports by the treasurer and financial secretary were given.

The Screening Committee moved that Michael Glen Pruski and Thomas Vincent McDermett b: admitted as new members. Barbara Burleson seconded the motion and the motion passed.

President Bayer read some correspondence and remarked ',hat it was time to renew the beer license.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer gave a report on plans for a hayride and Christmas party by the youth clubbers. She also reported that the youth members had helped package peanuts and two members helped in the booth at the festival. Jerry Meyer volunteered a truck and trailer for the hayride. All youth members may invite as many guests as they wish and each member has to furnish food for himself and his guests.

President Bayer reminded the members of the problems with the water system and the heaters. Some decisions will have to be made soon.

He also gave a report on the Peanut Festival and the Fire Department meeting he had attended. The lodge is planning to have a benefit dance for the fire department soon. Lori Hrna is in charge of publicity. They are in the process of purchasing a fire truck and our lodge is planning to help; this truck is to be used for out-of-town fires, so those of us who live outside the city l'mits will benefit greatly from this project.

Pre-sale tickets are to be printed and we hope the membership will support this cause.

Our next meeting will be a very important one. First of all, it's time to elect officers; al: o, it is time for our annual social and Christmas Party; December 5th is the date that was chosen for our social/meeting.

The men are to barbecue the meat and the ladies are to bring side dishes of vegetables and desserts. A meal at 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. was the time set by the members, games of

We had 27 members present who stood and recited the Pledge of 'Lllegiance to our flag and remained si anding for a few moments of silence to honor the memory of our departed sister, Pavlina Walla, who died October 24, 1982. May she rest in peace.

Our secretary held roll call of officers and read the minutes from the previous meeting. All other officers' reports were also given.

We were sorry to report these sick members: William Hobratsch, Rosie Schilhab, Roy Gene Melnar and Fred Buri, Sr. We hope all are well by the time this goes to print.

We will be looking for you all at our next r ieeting.

It was announced that we will have our annual meeting and have election of officers for the following 'ear for Sunday, December 5th at 2 p m.

Our Lodge 142 members' Christmas Party will be December 17 at 8 p.m.

We had a capsule drawing for $50, sorry Curtis E. Adams was absent for the $50. The consolation prize of $5 was drawn from the register book and the lucky member who was present was Sister Adelle Stein.

Activities Scheduled At Lodge 154 Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting yesterday was called to order by our secretary, Sister Mary Renfro, in the absence of our president and vice president who were out-of-town.

Our yo'ith leader, Tressie Jean Sanders, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All reports were approved as read with a minor change.

Discussion was held about the annual Lodge 154 and Sokol Christmas Party to be held Thursday, December 16 at 7:30 p.m.

The sisters are asked to bring goodies for the social following Santa's visit.

New candidates for membership are Christy Lee Meier, Beatrice A. Jordan and Linda Sue Bartosh. We welcome you!

The Halloween Party had a large attendance and was a big success.

Our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Cleveland, thanks you all for the cakes for their cake walk and all the goodies "'or the social. Costume winners were in ages 6 and under: 1st place — Codie Kubala, 2nd — Lisa Hicks, 3rd — Zachary Capers; in ages 7 and over: 1st—Michelle Cox, 2nd — Donald D. Steinman III, (I failed to get the 3rd place winner's name). Adult winners were: 1st — Winona Gilliam, 2nd —Carolyn Cleveland, 3rd —Rose Steinman. I missed the party but everyone reported a good time was had by all.

A reminder of the Christmas Party with the Metroplex Lodges at Lodge 92 for Sunday, December 5th.

Dinner will be served from 2 to 3:30 p.m., dance following at 4 p.m. with Henry Rejcek's Band; if you didn't call in, you still may. Remember, there is no fee for the members and their immediate family and $5 per person for guests, so come on out for a good day. Sisters bring pastry.

Sisters Maria Prill, Eva Dockery and her husband, Virgil, spent 3 wonderful weeks in Germany visiting relatives they hadn't seen in 40 years; they also were in Austria seeing many beautiful castles and mountains. They had quite a bit of rain while there and did miss a lot of sights, but they are already planning a trip to go back.

Benny and I spent a few wonderful days at Lake Livingston with John and Judy Sindel, Jerry and Bessie Kolacny and the Oscar Schillers, all of Lodge 88, Houston.

The fishing was fair; the dominoe games were great.

We extend our congratulations to Brother George and Patti Hallford on the arrival of their second son.

He is still in the hospital and we all hope and pray he is able to go home soon. The proud great-grandmother is Sister Mary Hale.

Congratulations also to some of our November anniversaries; Brothers and Sisters, Jim and Janee Wright, 2 years; Frankie and Martha Milan, 13 years; Don and Rose Steinman, 39 years; and Benny and Mary Pavey, 47 years.

Quite a few of our members attended the beautiful 50th anniversary party held at Lodge 92 for Clem and Louise Oujesky, and we all extend our congratulations to a wonderful couple.

Brother Liska was born in Austin County, Texas 13 December 1890, the son of Joseph and Louise (Janacek) Liska. He was a farmer, farming in Austin County until 1932, then moved to Rosenberg.

He was a member of the Brethren Church in Rosenberg, and a member of the SPJST Lodge 68 at Nelsonville for 71 years.

Brother Liska married Emilie Jurchak 12 November 1914.

Funeral services were held from the Davis Funeral Home in Rosenberg 31 August 1982, with Rev. Tallas and Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Burial was in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Rosenberg.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Elvis Sebesta of Rosenberg, Mrs. Adeline Sorrells of New Orleans, Louisiana; one son, Franklin Liska of Rosenberg; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters; and one stepsister.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1966; two sons, Dennis and Otis Liska; two grandsons; and three brothers.

The State 4-H Fashion Show turned out to be a personal triumph for Sandra House of Atascosa County.

Competing against 54 other girls and a lone boy, Sandra, 18, finished first in the tailored daywear category in Corpus Christi last week. She received a $300 scholarship from Cloth World, Inc., a scissor set from White Sewing Machine Company and the new Vogue Sewing Book from Butterick Fashion Marketing Company.

Sandra fashioned a four-piece suit consisting of 100 percent wool underlined coat, jacket with buttonholed pockets, line skirt and 100 percent silk French seamed blouse. Criteria for selecting scholarship winners from among high school seniors include: • Results of the S.A.T. and/or A.C.T. • High school records • References and recommendations • The Committee's judgment of the applicant's potential

The Slavonic Benevolent Order of The State of Texas established a Scholarship Fund in 1982 to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by SPJST members, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in youth and in our economic and social progress.

MILITARY SERVICE AND ILLNESS If a scholarship recipient enters military service, the scholarship will be held in reserve for a period of up to six (6) months after the date of his/her release from service. Illness or injury that causes a delay in acceptance or continuance of a scholarship will also be considered good cause for holding an award in reserve.

Applicants who are college undergraduates must submit official transcripts of past college work with their application.

The Committee's decisions will be announced before the beginning of the fall semester.

TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP Four-year programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

ADMINISTRATION The SPJST Supreme Lodge has full authority to establish the rules and regulations governing the Scholarship Program or to amend them as it deems necessary. Administration and financing of the programs are the exclusive responsibility of the SPJST.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

Scholarship winners may attend any college in the United States of America accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. It must remain in force during the tenure of the scholarship.

The Committee has exclusive jurisdiction in selecting scholarship winners. It acts in an advisory capacity to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The SPJST assumes no responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs, or debts of scholarship winners or scholarship applicants and will not be liable therefore in any manner.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

SELECTION Scholarships are awarded by a Committee selected by the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. The Committee consists of persons who have a recognized standing in the field of education and who are not associated in any other way with the SPJST or the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

The SPJST will award scholarships in the following amounts: Four-year program .

Funds covering scholarship awards are remitted direct to the accredited college selected by the recipient as a payment toward the required tuition and fees.
