It has always been felt by each SPJST member that he has the responsibility of serving our brothers and sisters. Many of us believe in it, some of us live it, and many of us held a deep conviction in serving our Society. A very good example of this was exemplified at the Dedication and Grand Opening, held November 7th, for Lodge 172 in Pasadena.

Every lodge in the SPJST has some interesting story about their origin, and with Pasadena's lodge, someone has to be given the lion's share of credit for making a new lodge possible. This load of work is credited to Sister Lillia Mae Peter, who became the first member and first sales representative of Lodge 172. Her lodge acquired approximately 145 members for its new charter dedication held 30 November 1969, at the Petro-Tex Recreation Center. Thereafter, the lodge members began to hold meetings wherever it was convenient. As time passed, the lodge rented the F.O.E. facilities, closer to downtown Pasadena, where they held dances and other entertainment. From the interest displayed by their members, the determination and ambition grew stronger and stronger, and soon the lodge was able to acquire three extra sales representatives. At present the lodge has over 400 members.

From the interest and participation of its members, the lodge was able to purchase 12 ih acres of land on Preston Road, in Pasadena and build a beautiful edifice. The structure has a dance floor of 80 feet by 90 feet, that can also be used for skating parties; the lodge is available to organizations and companies for parties, dances, seminars, conventions, luncheons, machinery and equipment shows.

Their facilities will also be available to individuals and schools for banquets, weddings, reunions, and other private parties and dances.

The day's festivities commenced with a barbecue meal and music by the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Rudy Dybala. The official ceremonies followed-with Lodge 172 President Dan Berry, SL Vice President Bernie Gebala and District V Director Louis Hanus cutting the ribbon. Afterwards, everyone moved inside for the dedication ceremonies, with Building Committee Chairman Albert Risinger acting as Master of Ceremonies. The Color Guards of the Disabled American Veterans of Pasadena Chapter 194 presented the colors, while Helen Hegwood, accompanied on the piano by Naomi Spencer, sang the American and Czech National Anthems before an overwhelming crowd. Brother Risinger then introduced the speakers: namely, Lodge 172 President Dan Berry, SL President Nick Morris and District V Director Louis Hanus. Before the Closing

remarks, Brother Risinger, on behalf of the lodge, expressed sentiments of appreciation to all for attending their Grand Opening.

Additional live entertainment was provided by the Lodge 88 Czech Choral Club, which was directed by Sister Helen Hegwood (substituting for Brother Tim Kostom), accompanied by the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra; Sokol Houston gymnasts then presented an exhibition; the Rebel Rousers, a square dance club, also performed a few snappy numbers; and the Heritage Singers of Galveston sang several numbers from their latest album, "The Songs of Love and Life," which was directed by Rev. Paul Chovanec.

We regret.that we were unable to stay longer for the remainder of the evening's program; time did now allow because we had to rush back to West for our son's school band contest competition the next day.

We feel certain the eventful occasion was successful, and continued best wishes are extended to the membership of Lodge Rozkvet in Pasadena. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! In conclusion, the editor must state that the SPJST was wellrepresented by many members from other districts. Among the other Home Office representatives were: Brothers Leonard Mikeska, Jerry Mikulas, Sidney Kacir; and Directors Ben Trcalek of District I, Sid Pokladnik of Dallas (Dist. III), Matt Vanek of Victoria (Dist. VI), and Sister Thelma Hrncir of Corpus Christi (Dist. VII). Brother J. M. Skrabanek of Lodge 139 Danbury was also recognized as the former longtime District V director, and the 93-year-old gentleman also served as district organizer and rest homes director. In addition to the representation, we wish to commend the faithful Andy and Millie Mlenar, known as the "Polka Ambassadors" of Moore, Oklahoma, who attend many of the Texas activities in our SPJST ballrooms.

From the Vice President' s Office Attention: SPJST Sales Representatives SFM Smith received these in­ quiries/suggestions at the recent District 7 Sales Seminars.

So that all of our sales represen­ tatives receive the benefits of these items we will publish the answers: (1) There are some causes of death listed in the DI supplement which this benefit is not payable. If you will review a DI supplement form it will becomevery clear to you what these exceptions are.

(2) We will run, on occasion, "Reminders" in the Vestnik regarding keeping your SPJST certificate current (such as beneficiary change, name change etc.)

(3) All Sales Representatives/ Financial Secretaries have received Plan Master Codes - some plans have more than one plan code for a specific type of insurance (example 20 pay life has plan code 6, 52, 73, 114,14).

The reason for this is all these plan codes are in fact 20 Pay Life but they were issued over the years from different note books. It doesn't effect you in any way and this is for HomeOfficeuse.

Any additional inquiries we receive will be answered in this manner so all sales representatives can learn together.

EXCERPTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THEFOURTHREGULARQUAR­ TERLY MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST HELD OCTOBER 12-14, 1982 AT LA GRANGE,TEXAS,ANDTHE HOME OFFICEIN TEMPLE,TEXAS. The meeting was called to order on October 12, 1982 at 9 a.m. in La Grange, Texas in the District Court­ room in the Fayette County Court­ house to commemorate the 86th and 85th year of the founding of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) in the same courtroom where the SPJST had its origins and beginnings with 26 Czech-Texansmeeting there 28 Dec­ ember 1896 and the First Conven­ tion June 20,1897.

A number of visitors were present to witness the event, including Past Director John A. Kubena. President Morris acknowledged the visitors and briefly reviewed the history of the SPJST. An air of nostalgia prevailed throughout the historic courtroom. Past Director John A. Kubena, son of one of the founding fathers, J. R. Kubena, was asked to address the group. He spoke highly of his long association with the SPJST and recalled the dedication of his father, J. R. Kubena, to the SPJST. Other visitors who addressed the group were Lad Cmajdalka (1), Henry Schovajsa . (106), Rev. Emil Vinklarek, Fayette County Attorney John Wied, District Clerk Walter Schaefer, Edith Pfeiffer (179), John Hilsher (88), Venus Sharp (97), Gladys Zimmerhanzel and Helen Matocha (38), and Edwin Kubena (1). A photographer from the Fayette County Record was also present.

MINUTES-The minutes of the July 13-15, 1982Supreme Lodge meeting were considered and accepted · as presented.

REPORTS A motion was adopted that all Supreme Lodge officers' reports be acknowledgedand filed for record.

OLDBUSINESS The Supreme Lodge officers were given the opportunity to review and elaborate on various items in their reports.

The. meeting recessed at 10:45to be reconvened at the Home Officein Temple, Texas at 3 p.m.

FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES-There was a lengthy discussion of the need to stress Society and local lodge community involvement and contri­ bution to charitable projects. Ideas were shared on this area of activities the previous day during the informal planning session. It was agreed to refer the matter to the Corporate Planning Committee (CPC) for study and recommenda­ tion in the January Supreme Lodge meeting.

Recess for the day was taken at 5 p.m, until 8:30 a.m. on October 13, 1982.

ANNUITYPROGRAMThe Society actuary, David Huff, was present to discuss the proposed annuity program. After due delib­ eration, it was agreed on motion duly passed to have Actuary Huff prepare an annuity program for final consideration in the January Supreme Lodge meeting. The actuary's report is filed for record in Exhibits Volume4.

HISTORICAL MARKER IN LA GRANGE-There was discussion on whether the matter of the historical marker in La Grange should be pursued in 1983. A motion was adopted to make contact with the Fayette County Historical Com­ mission informing them that the SPJST is still interested in placing a historical marker on the courthouse lawn in La Grange.

MINUTES OF SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS' MEETINGS/INVEST­ MENTS The minutes of three SL officers' meetings were approved. The investments as listed in Secretary-

Treasurer Mikeska's report were ratified.

LOAN APPLICATIONS - The loan allocation for the quarter was set at $175,000per district.

Recess for lunch was taken at 12 noon.

The interest rate for the quarter for new loans and assumptions was set at 13%.

A motion was adopted to recon­ sider the action of January 11, 1982 concerning the lodge loan rate of interest. After due deliberation it was decided to consider lodge building loan applications during each quarterly Supreme Lodge meeting and to set the rate of inter­ est at time of consideration of each application.

It was agreed on motion duly passed that the interest rate of an SPJST lodge loan commitment be decreased to 13%.

Commercial property loans were discussed but no action was taken.

DELINQUENT REAL ESTATE LOANS - The listing of 13 delin­ quent loans was considered and the recommendations for action were approved.

CUSTODIAL TRUST AGREE­ MENT - A proposed agreement was discussed and copies were distrib­ uted. Authorization to enter into such an agreement was previously granted by the Supreme Lodge.

Such an agreement would again make it possible for the Society to invest in Treasury securities and US Government bonds.

PUBLICATIONCGMMITTEE- The requisitions for expense reimburse­ ment for members of the Publication Committee for their meeting of Sep­ tember 25, 1982were considered. A letter dated October 12, 1982,from the secretary of the Publication Committee was also considered. It was decided that the requisitions could not be paid because of lack of authorization for their meeting in the by-laws. A letter approved by the members of the Supreme Lodge was formulated to be mailed to the Publication Committee members.

DISCOUNT ON "A" & "B" CER­ TIFICATES - A motion was adopted that the usual discount of 25% on premiums be granted to all members in Class "A" & "B" whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 or more, plus an additional 25% discount when they attain the age of 75.

PREMIUM REFUND CHECKS - It was agreed to set the reimburse­ ment to local lodges for mailing premium refund checks to members at 15~ per check.

REFUND TO LODGES - After dis­ cussion, it was agreed on motion duly passed, to set the refund to lodges at 8% of premiums remitted.

SOCIETY AUTOMOBILES - A motion was duly passed that author­ ization be granted to a committee composedof Supreme Lodge officers and two Supreme Lodge Directors to trade the existing four automo­ biles on two new automobiles and one station wagon after receiving bids.

CZECH DAY - Director Pokladnik invited all to attend the Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas October 17, 1982 at which Vice President Gebala will be the speaker.

Director Hanus invited all to the grand opening and dedication of the new lodge home of Lodge No. 172 Pasadena November 7th.

Cottonwood Schedules Annual Meeting Date Dear Readers: The regular monthly meeting of the SPJST Lodge No. 6 was held Friday, November 5, 1982 at 8 p.m, President Robert Dobecka called the meeting to order.

Shirley Dobecka and Tammi Dobecka led the Pledge of Alleg­ iance. Shirley then recited the SPJST Pledge. The membership remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Brother Wallace Gummelt.

All officers were present.

The minutes of the previous meeting were ready by Secretary Barbara Hykel. They were approved as read.

All reports were approved as read.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth club report. The club will be going to the Rest Home, November 10th. The club has given to several charity funds in the month of October. The youth members are starting their Christmas projects. Our club had their Halloween Party, October 29th. The Christmas Program will be held December 19 and the youth will be presenting a program. We will be decorating the hall on the first Friday in December and everyone is invited to help in this project. The youth members are making posters for Thanksgiving.

The trustees' report was given by Brother Aubrey Uptmor.

Our Christmas Party will be December 19 at 3 p.m., with supper being served at 5 p.m., and a youth program will follow. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish.

The $10 progressive door prize was won by Doris Skrdla - not present; the $5 progressive door prize by Evelyn Reynold - not present; and the $2 door prize was wonby President Robert Dobecka.

Our next monthly meeting will be December 5, 1982 at 3 p.m. The election of officers will be held.

The Board of Trustees' meeting will be Friday, December 3rd at 7:30 p.m.

Lodge 39 Bryan All Set For Yuletide Party

Date to Remember Lodge No. 51 -Sunday, Dec. 6th

Dear Fellow Members: In regard to our Christmas Party, please be advised that it will be held December 18th. Social will begin at 5 p.m., dinner to be served at 6 p.m., after dinner Santa promises to come visit, and dance will be held from 8 p.m. until 12:00 a.m. We are again asking our ladies to bring desserts; all other food and, etc., will be furnished by our lodge. The dinner is for members and their immediate family; the dance is for everyone.

You may invite all the persons you please to the dance; we hope to have a good crowd for the dance and there will be no cover charge. Beer and soft drinks will be available from our bar.

I also feel a need to thank our youth leader, her club and all the people who helped with the youth club's Halloween Party. It was a huge success. I am sure that everyone who was there will agree that it was ingeniously put together.

The youth department worked very hard for three weeks prior to the party and it was just great. I've never seen one like it before: the decorations, the spookhouse, and all the other booths were just magnificent! I also want to comment on the sale the youth club held in the Post Oak Mall, October 23rd; this event was also a great success. We are grateful to all the people who donated food and other items toward this sale. The club is already working on their float for our Bryan City Annual Christmas Parade. I wouldn't miss it for anything. There are many persons working and helping with our youth club, but most of the credit must go to our ambitious Youth Leader Rena Macik and her strong desire for success with the youth club.

We are in the process of small repairs and painting of our lodge home and I'm sure you have already noticed the nice new look.

We have recently leased our land to an oil company, now all we need is the oil well; you know how the saying goes, "anything is possible"!

Since the ending of 1982 is near, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have helped me in any way this past year in handling the business of our lodge. No one person can do the job; it takes many devoted good people so thank you, again, I appreciate it very much.

Special thanks to Milton and Lucille Koehler for all their hard, faithful work, we couldn't have done it without your support and help.

We will elect our new officers in our December meeting, so please be present for this important meeting; also, I will have a report on our finances at that time.

I hope to see all of you at our meetings and our Christmas Party!

Dear Members and Friends: The heading of this article should remind us that we need to remember the date of Sunday, December 6th, as the day of our regular quarterly meeting of Lodge 51, in Ellinger.

Incidently, this will be our annual meeting, and we will need, to elect our lodge officers for 1983. It is the meeting when your annual reports are being presented, and many of the lodge's activities are being discussed. It is the time when you may ask questions, make suggestions for changes and improvements.

Of course that is not all! You will recall that immediately following the meeting, which begins at 1 p.m., we will start our regular games party. We will have the same old professionals with us and hope to have new ones here to try to teach them how to play dominoes — 42 and Stick. We promise you that you will enjoy the day.

Remember that the members are asked to bring along their neighbors and friends, and remember as well that each family is asked to bring some cookies, cake, kolache or sandwiches, for refreshments and the lodge will provide coffee and/or tea.

Lodge Announces Annual Meeting Waco

Our regular monthly meeting was held November 8 at 7:30 p.m.

President Wilcox called the meeting to order and asked Dorothy Smith to lead the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

All officers and committee chairpersons gave their reports.

We were happy to have a new member, Harvey Blair, attend our meeting for the first time. We are happy to have Harvey and his wife Ann as members of our lodge.

We would like to say thank you to our youth club and leaders for decorating our lodge for Halloween. The ghosts, black cats, and witches were everywhere.

We finally get our P.A. system rewired and new speakers added.

Now you will be able to hear if you are paged. This was the last of our goals set for 1982. We feel we have accomplished quite a bit this year, and this year is fast coming to an end.

Our election for new officers and trustees for 1983 will be held December 13 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Gary Josey and the Lone Star Express will be playing for our New Year's Eve dance, which will start at 8:30 p.m. and last until 12:30 a.m.; admission for this night only will be $5 per member and $7 per guest.

Occasionally, we are asked by curious members, (but not curious enough to attend our meetings): "What happens to the money that is made in our lodge?" This is a brief report on how our money is spent: $15,886.64 for improvements and repairs on lodge property; $900 for charity organizations; $856.56 to youth club; then, we have utilities, lodge building note, employees, bands, and supplies. Also consider the fact that we are only open one night a week. I would say someone is doing something right. Of Entertainment In Store At Lodge 84, Dallas Lots

Bill Kucera's Czech Mates play for dancing, November 20th from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.; we will look for you; also on this day, the Special Committee holds a bake sale at Rudolph's — if you can donate pastry for this project, it will be appreciated; for those who cannot bake, then you can buy something for your Thanksgiving table.

November 22nd is our, monthly lodge meeting at 7:30 p.m.

December 4th the Jodie Mikula Band plays that good music for dancing.

December 18th the Brave Combo plays your favorite polkas.

When asked by our Brother Ben Jarma (who hires the bands for our dances) whether he had enough polka music to keep the crowd on the dance floor happy (they played only three on the bandshell stage), the leader of this group told Ben that 40 pieces of polka music (more or 1--,ss) were waiting to be played, so please come and enjoy all of them from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.

December 19th our Christmas Party will take place; 5 to 6 — happy hour, 6 to 7 — dinner served, 7:30 — our Christmas Party will be performed. Members planning to attend should bring a side dish and dessert to be served with the meat, bread, coffee or tea that the lodge will furnish.

New Year's Eve reservations are being taken; The Country Polka Boys will play from 8:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m., it's going to be fun.

Hello to all members and friends of the SPJST, especially to all friends of mine and family and of Lodge 172 Rozkvet in Pasadena, Texas.

We wish to thank all who participated during our Grand Opening: the Supreme Lodge officers, directors from nearly all districts, editor and members of various lodges of SPJST and other organizations. This was appreciated by all the members of our lodge; many, many thanks for your participation which was a successful day. Thanks again!

My apologies to all who had problems parking at our dedication and grand opening. When we set the date, we were hoping all would be finished but I guess we will have to blame the Murphy's Law; what can happen wrong, it will!

Now that our new home of Lodge 172 is finished, come see us again and all you members try and show up sometimes and help a little; also come to the meetings and participate because this is your lodge home as well as is the rest of us.

Also the lodge has learned that two more of our members have lost loved ones in death: Junita Cote's father passed away and B. J. Hlavaty's mother has passed away; our deepest sympathy to these members and their families.

Rock SPJST Lodge No. 187 Holds Very Enjoyable Meeting/Dinner/ Dance In October Round

October 17th eighty-one members enjoyed a very well-planned meeting, dinner and dance. A great deal of thanks goes to Entertainment Chairman Sharon Holman for her efforts in arranging this event.

Special thanks also goes to Mr. & Mrs. Wilbert Nelson, Mr. & Mrs. Don Gavin, Mr. & Mrs. Bill Holman, Mr. & Mrs. Ed Volek and Mr. & Mrs. Al Giarrusso for donating door prizes that were given away throughout the evening to lucky members. Thanks also goes to Coors Beer for furnishing a keg for the evening.

BUSINESS MEETING: After roll call, which showed all officers present, secretary's minutes were read and approved also the treasurer's report.

Several committee reports were made. President Oman reported that work on the barbecue pit will be started this week.

A general clean-up day was scheduled for October 23 with food and drink furnished for all members who help. Everyone was urged to help.

It was reported that the phone jack has been purchased and David Smith will install it before the weekend.

Rules and Regulations Committee presented several amendments to be discussed and voted on. Motion was made, seconded and carried to amend Article 14 to include a second vicepresident to be elected in November.

Article 15 will be amended to include 12 board members per member's vote.

Members voted to leave Article 20, Article 21 and Article 22 as they are presently listed with no changes.

The Nominations Committee presented the following list of persons to serve on the Board of Trustees for 1983, three of which will be elected: Jimmy Gilstrap, Sharon Gavin, Gene Landry, Norris Lawrence, John Manbeck, Lymon Larson and Kenneth Werchan. Nominations ceased; these 7 will appear on the ballot in November.

The Nominations Committee also presented the following list of officers for 1983. Members accepted these nominations.

President — David Oman Vice Presidents — Arnold Leschber and Albert Lange Secretary — Sherry Morrison Treasurer — Al Giarrusso Financial Secretary — Leila Gainer Youth Leader — Leland Jacobson and Jessica Jacobson Elections will be held at our regular meeting November 21st at 4 p.m. All members are urged to attend and vote for the candidate of their choice.

The committees will be elected and appointed from the floor during the November meeting.

Chairman Arnold Leschber expressed his appreciation and thanked the Nominating Committee for a job well-done.

After the business meeting a delicious dinner was enjoyed. The meat was catered by Vinci Mares and members brought trimmings.

Following the dinner and door prize drawings, members enjoyed a dance with music furnished by Country Lovin.

Don't forget -- Elections will be held at 4 p.m. meeting November 21st.

A party is scheduled to be held in the Sundowner Club Saturday, November 20. Everyone is invited.

6/V1STMK — Wednesday, November 17, 1982 How did all of you enjoy the Czech Day at the State Fair this year? It was a very beautiful day! I always enjoy the little children most of all. They steal the show every time!

This year one of our members, Aggie Mach, and her husband, Frank, were chosen as the oldest married couple. Frank was also the eldest gentleman and Antonia Novak was the eldest lady. Congratulations to you all! My dad, Jerry Urban, was recognized for having attended the Fair on Czech Day for many, many years. You can always recognize him by his hat and cigar! All in all it was a very enjoyable day.

The hostesses for November, who prepared our tasty luncheon, were as follows: Liddie Pavelka, Vallie Tupy, Bessie Kalich, Vickie Kohn, Mary Kubacak, Fanny Schweizer, Libbie Elsik and Lydia Kartous.

This is the- month for that turkey and all the trimmings. The stores are already stocking everything you will need for preparing that special dinner. I can smell the aromas already, can't you? Remember, don't eat too much! You still have all those Christmas parties to think about.

Stretch those calories until December if you can. Maybe you won't eat as much because we won't be nibbling while watching the Dallas Cowboy game. After dinner that has usually been the big event!

Until next month, let me remind you to try and take in one or two of the many bazaars and craft shows going on in our city. You can get all kinds of ideas! Usually we end up buying something, but it's so much fun just going to admire all the talents that go into making these various items at these bazaars.

Members on the sick list are: Ledde Kadera in the Heights Hospital for seven weeks, is doing fine and has hopes to be released Thursday, November 11th. Brother Ludwig Mikes was reported stricken ill Sunday while attending the opening of Lodge 172 in Pasadena.

Congratulations to all these lovely couples married over forty years: Royal and Laura Warnasch 43 years, Frank and Mary Tilich (49 years), tus and Ann Gerlich (52 years), Amos and Della Kadlecek (40 years), Ed and Louise Kadlecek (53 years), Frank and Vlasta Slanina (55 years) and donated the refreshments after the meeting to celebrate all these wonderful couples' continued Happy Life!

The Social Night Committee will give away 15 turkeys to some lucky persons to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day. The drawing will take place this week, Thursday night, November 18th. Bill Neskorik, employed by the Central Freight Lines, was honored at a banquet in Waco, Tx. October 16, 1982 for his 20-year safe driving.

Teri was a youth club member and performed in dancing the National Czech Beseda dance with three other teenage couples of Lodge 88 on request on many occasions. Now Teri is enrolled at the North Harris County College. Congratulations, Bill, on your safe driving; keep it up!

The picture of Lodge 88 Choral Club on the front page of our weekly Vestnik brought many memories to my mind and made me aware, that many of our devoted members are not in this group anymore for some reason or other. In my heart, I feel these devoted brothers and sisters deserve to be remembered as they are missed very much. Each had a part in building our SPJST and, mainly, Lodge 88.

Frank and Frances Dvorak, both participated from the very beginning of the Choral Club, when Frank Hlavaty directed this group singing at festivals and, at that time, at many funeral services on request as far as Corpus Christi and many other places. Frank participated in Czech plays on our stage, and at many places in Texas. Illness several years ago put a stop to his participation and now both follow the activities from home and devote their time to each other.

The late Anton Svestka and wife, Anna, were also one of the first.

Besides being in the Choral Club, Anton portrayed many parts in Czech plays and devoted his time for some time in directing with Rudy Sefcik (now editor) and the late Johnnie Sula. Anna, along with her husband, enjoyed the singing and acting; she also served as prompter for many plays for the Dramatic Club Hlahol. Now she has a comfortable home living with her daughter, Hilda Krpec, who also had a part in all this.

Ed and Louise Kadlecek, both were active but illness interfered and now for quite a while are not singing with the group. Louise is taking good care of Ed and they do come around. Ed, besides in the Choral Club, served as a Board member, vice president for many years and president of Lodge 88.

Louise also had many functions — financial secretary, Entertainment Committee, youth club leader and now on the Refund Check Committee, she also had many parts in the Dramatic Club.

Amos and Della Kadlecek were with the Choral Club for a long time, but, with Amos' illness, their participation ended, but now they both are well and we are wondering why they are not back in the groove.

In the past both were active in the Dramatic Club in Czech and English plays.

The late Rudy Lesak was always

ready to participate in any way asked of him. The same of the late, John Zemko, wherever needed he always was willing to extend a helping hand. We miss Bill and Pat Neskorik both with good voices; they are very much missed. Also, the three faithful sisters, Helen Valcik, Louise Chudej and Mary Johnson; Mary, besides in the Choral Club, was a very good actress. Mary portrayed many difficult characters on our stage to the delight of our well-remembered audiences. Anna Kilnar passed away about two years ago; she also loved to sing and participate on the stage.

All this is in the past and memories linger on.

As you can see the Choral Club members are entwined with the Hlahol Dramatic Club all through the years of the lodge's existence and work hand-in-hand and finding volunteers now for our stage performances is almost an impossible task.

The new Choral Club picture that came out on the front page of our Vestnik, November 3rd shows our new addition of interested Choral Club members. Ann Matush, Margie Anders, Frances Pustejovsky, Lillie Kubicek, George Pustejovsky, Melvin Post, Louis Hanus and Ernest Anders. Not in the picture are Bill and Evelyn Vornsand and Gene Barcak. The costumes are individually furnished by each member of the Choral Club.

Dear Members: At the last meeting, plans for the Christmas Party were made and new officers were elected for next year. We were happy to have District I Director Ben Trcalek visit and share a few words with us.

Many thanks from the lodge to those who have served as officers this past year; your services have been appreciated.

Newly-elected officers are as follows: President Don Helton, Vice President E. A. Wentrcek, Jr., Secretary Jane Schultz, Financial Secretary Charlene Helton, Treasurer Bruce Cater, Parliamentarian Derek Schultz, Reporter Scott Zetak, Flag Bearer David Storm, Jr. Two new Board members were elected to replace Nina Quitta and Larry Wentrcek. They are John Skrabanek and Danny Sikorski. All of the new officers will be sworn in at the December meeting.

The next meeting will be December 12th at 3:30 p.m. at the KC Hall in Bryan. This meeting will be our Christmas Party. It was decided to have a white elephant gift party. SVPS Fire Insurance Ass'n. Chapter No. 9, Ft. Worth Meeting Dear Members: It is hard to believe that it is November already and the holidays are almost here. I must admit I am not quite ready for them.

All of you should have received a letter by now reminding you of the next meeting of the SMFIA Chapter No. 9 meeting, which will be held Stonehenge in England k know n as the most famous prehistoric monuments of November 21 at 2 p.m. at the National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cut-Off Britain, two miles west of Amesbury.

The officers will give their reports and, at this meeting, there will be election of officers, committees and delegates to the convention which will be held next summer.

Refreshments, in part, were graciously donated by Estelle Hurtik. Many thanks. Officers were elected and we have many plans to be a very active part in the SPJST Youth Program.

The rest home visit was made Wednesday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m.

Names will be drawn for Christmas in the near future. It was decided to buy gifts within $3.

We will start practicing our Christmas Program. We are selling Santa booths with candy sticks in them for a project. The youth members also have been working on their Christmas gift presents.

ACTIVITIES ATTENDED

BY GRANGER YC Dear Readers, The Granger Youth Club of Lodge 20 held their Halloween Party, October 31st at 5 p.m. in our lodge hall. On hand to share the fun, with the members, were spooks, monsters, candles and incense.

Balloons, orange and black paper streamers, made a real Halloween atmosphere.

After "trick-or-treating" at a few homes, and a visit to Beth Hager's spookhouse, we enjoyed a hot dog supper at the lodge hall. Beth is one of our members and we would like to thank her for making the spookhouse for our club. Also a big thank you to Michelle Strmiska, Becky White and Kara Carpenter for a great job of decorating the hall; and, [ast, but not least, a thanks to our youth leaders and parents for preparing our meal. We had several out-of-town members present and were very happy to see them.

Our next meeting was set for November 13 at 3 p.m. We met at the lodge hall for a business meeting, then went to Temple to see a movie. We made plans for our December activities. We also discussed ideas for our spring meetings. Mrs. Cavanaugh was also updating points sheets.

ACTIVITIES HELD BY LODGE 30 YOUTH CLUB Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting November 7th at 2:30 p.m., in the Taiton Community Center.

Our meeting was called to order

by President Vicki Dorotik. The Pledge was led by Marcy Dorotik and Kim Dornak recited the prayer.

There were 28 members and 10 adults present.

Poems were read by Jean, Vicki and Marcy Dorotik, Michelle Srubar and Stephanie Roye.

Contest winners were (6-9): 1stLenice Kasper, 2nd-Craig Dornak; in age .group 10-12: 1st-Marcy Dorotik, 2nd-Janna Dornak, 3rd-Landis Dornak; in 13-17: 1st-Michelle Srubar, 2nd (a tie) Jean Dorotik and Vicki Dorotik.

Door prize winners included Chris Milder, Amy Kresta, Michelle Srubar, Christine Krpec, Kelly Korenek and Karen Kahanek.

Birthdays in November were for Karen Kahanek, also for Assistant Youth Leader Mrs. Alvin Kahanek who was presented a cake and a gift from the youth club.

The meeting was adjourned and we all worked on craft; refreshments were then served.

LODGE 84 TEEN CLUB In September the teen club at Lodge 84, Dallas, had a skating party and meeting at White Rock Skating Rink.

At the State Fair October 17, Paul Manak, Paul Sanders, Eugene Reznik, and Richard Andreason served as altar boys in the Czech mass at the Hall of State. Three circles from Lodge 84 participated in the Ceska Beseda to music by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, directed by our own 'Sid' Pokladnik.

There was a Halloween Party on the 31st, complete with a costume contest and bobbin' for apples.

The next meeting will be November 21st, and we are going to start planning for the Christmas party which will be December 18th.

NEWS FROM LODGE 17 YC Dear Readers, October 27th, our youth club went to Dime Box. The Dime Box club had a hayride and spookhouse. We all got on two different trailers.

After the hayride was over, we rode over to the spookhouse which was a good one and our whole youth club enjoyed it.

When we got back to the hall, we had hot dogs, chips, cokes, etc. Then we went home.

LODGE 6 YC WINS PRIZE IN POSTER CONTEST Dear Readers, The Cottonwood Youth Club met Friday, November 5 after the mother lodge meeting.

All reports were given and correspondence was read from Natalie and Michael Mynar and Denaria and Steve Deitrich.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported on the Six Flags trip and the cost of it and also thanked Sister Peggy Dobecka for obtaining the tickets.

The District III youth poster won second place and the club received $15.

Birthday cake was brought by Shirley Dobecka and next month's cake will be brought by Melis gaMynar.

30 YC PARTICIPATES IN THANKSGIVING PROJECT LODGE

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting November 7 at 2:30 p.m. Our meeting was called to order by President Vicki Dorotik.

Marcy Dorotik led the Pledge and Kim Dornak recited the prayer.

Roll call, minutes, and treasurer's report were read. In addition, old and new business topics were then discussed.

Our charity project for this month is giving canned goods to a needy family for Thanksgiving. We also agreed to take $10 from the club and donate it towards a turkey for the needy family.

I would like to thank everyone who brought canned goods to our meeting. I'm happy to see everyone helping out.

We had our program on "Thanksgiving." Also, birthdays were honored and door prizes were given.

Furthermore, we made craft and played games. The meeting was then adjourned and refreshments were served.

TOM DEWITT, JR., who died Tuesday, October 12th, 1982 in Laird Memorial Hospital, Kilgore, Texas after a sudden illness at the age of 43 years.

Brother DeWitt was a native and lifelong resident of Kilgore. He was a 1961 graduate of the University of Texas, where he received a degree in Business Administration. He graduated in 1964 from the Baylor School of Law. He practiced law in Longview, Texas.

He was a member and past president of the Gregg County Bar Association and a member of the State Bar of Texas.

Brother DeWitt was the Gregg County Democratic Chairman at the time of his death. He had served two years as chairman of the Gregg

County Democratic Party, and was elected this year without opposition.

He was also past board member at Roy H. Laird Country Club in Kilgore.

In addition to other activities he was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 178 and a member of St. Lukes Methodist Church.

Funeral Services were in St. Lukes Methodist Church in Kilgore.

Rader Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; a daughter, Mario Anne; two sons, Tom HI and James Jeffrey, all of Kilgore; a sister, Elizabeth Penter of New Orleans, La.; his parents, Mr. 8.z Mrs. Tom DeWitt, Sr. of Kilgore; several aunts and uncles; and one nephew.

Brother Tom was a very devoted, active and proud member who promoted benevolence, the SPJST and its purpose. He has served the Lodge in transacting the legal work in building of the local lodge home in 1977-78 and has served as legal advisor in many other areas for the lodge.

No words can express our sympathy and sense of loss at the passing of Brother Tom. So if you will, remember him in your prayers.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Brother John Howard was born in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas 16 June 1905. At an early age he moved to the Frydek community near Sealy, where he also got married and spent most of his time farming.

Brother Howard, being in failing health for the past 8 months, died in the Brazos Valley Hospital in Sealy, Texas, 22 September 1982.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 24 from the Pete Etlinger Funeral Home in Sealy, with the Rev. Jimmy Hejl officiating.

Burial was in the San Felipe Cemetery at San Felipe.

Survivors include his wife, Olga Howard; four sons, Sidney of Houston, Delton, Virgil and Melvin, all of Frydek; fourteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; also four step-brothers, Henry Verm of Freeport, Brooks Verm of Frydek, Edward and Louis Verm, both of Houston; two step-sisters, Rosie Lee Prentiss of Huntsville and Bethel Somer of East Bernard; one sister, Lillie Howard of San Felipe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Lorraine was elected National Director of Women of ASO for the term 1965-70 and had been on the Executive Board since.

At the 1970 convention, Lorraine was honored by the delegates assembled and was accorded Honorary Womens' Director of American Sokol Organization an honor given to but a few.

The Paces owned Pace Funeral Home from 1933-68. More recently, she was an associate of Hill-Pace Funeral Home. She had been a licensed funeral director for the past 50 years and retired in 1981.

Mrs. Pace was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She was active in the church and served many years on the altar guild. She was a founder of Ralph Wilson Boys' Club, serving as the club's vice president, executive committee member, building committee member and chairman of the program committee.

In 1967, Mrs. Pace received the Boys' Club Medallion from the Boys' Clubs of America. She was a member of Vashti Chapter No. 32, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a past worthy matron.

Texas Department Of Health Early Childhood Intervention For children with physical or developmental disabilities, there is new hope. The Texas Department of Health is seeing to that. Through its Bureau of Crippled Children's Services, directed by Doctor Punam Myer, the Texas Department of Health administers five programs that provide eligible youngsters with needed medical and developmental aid.

Each program has a special focus and different eligibility requirements. The Crippled Children's

Services Program arranges for medical and surgical treatment for children whose disabilities can be expected to improve as a result of special services. Youngsters whose families are unable to pay for the needed care and treatment are eligible to age 21.

The SSI-DCP program works with the families of children with serious handicapping conditions as well as with the youngsters themselves, and coordinates with other agencies to assure that they receive the services they need. Eligibility is based on family income and child's disability.

The newest program is Early Childhood Intervention, a coordinated effort of the Texas Department of Mental Health/Mental Retardation, the Texas Education Agency, and the Texas Department of Human Resources, as well as the Texas Department of

Health that provides or arranges services for children from birth to age 3 who are delayed in their development or who have organic or medical problems that are likely to cause such a delay. The program funds intervention programs throughout Texas to provide comprehensive services to these young children.

Serving Texans of all ages are the Hemophilia Assistance Program, which provides blood products, and the Epilepsy Program, which conducts demonstration clinics in El Paso and San Antonio. Children under age 21 with either of these conditions are eligible for the Crippled Children's Services Program.

MISS EL CAMPO(Continued from Page 1) Mrs. Kenneth E. Korenek, also won first place in the talent competition, a new feature of the Rotary Clubsponsored Miss El Campo Pageant.

For this she won a trophy and a $200 college scholarship.

As Miss El Campo, Korenek received a dozen red roses, the tiara which was placed on her head by outgoing queen Susan Jones, a trophy and she will represent El Campo and the Rotary Club in the Miss South Texas Pageant in Seguin over the Fourth of July weekend.

After graduation she will receive a 4300 scholarship to the college of her choice.

All contestants participated in a talent contest Tuesday night for the judges only. The eight finalists then presented their talents to the audience of approximately 850 people Wednesday night. Talent winner Kelly Korenek performed a dance and pantomime to the song, "New York, New York".

Kelly represented District VI in the State Queen Contest, which she won in the state competition and reigned as State SPJST Queen in 1981-82. She also performed her dance and pantomime to the song, "New York, New York", on behalf of the SPJST at the Texas Fraternal Congress Youth Spectacular in Kerrville October 30th. Malitka Olga Kondapaneni, krajanka eeskeho puvodu, 2ijicf a tvorici od r. 1957 v Haidarabadu v Indicke republice, vystavovala v lednu opet sve vrysy vytlakene do kti2e v galerii Na staromestske radnici v Praze. Vzhledem k zajmu o jejf vytvrane dflo bude v breznu vystavovat te2 v Brne. Krajanka Kondapaneni se venuje v3r*tvarne tvorbe, z n12 vyvinula vlastni techniku embossingu, pri eem2 vychazi z indicke lidove orientalni kresby a vytvarneho umenf. V CSSR ji2 vystavovala v Praze a KoSicich v r.

Dokazuje to velky zajem o zpe y a slovenskou lidovou pfseri mezi obeany slovenske narodnosti ZijIcr v Mad'arsku.

Ceskoslovensky tistav zahranieni a SdruZen1 Cechil a Slovakia v Rakousku podepsaly "Dohodu o vzajemne spolupraci na r. 1982".

SdruZenf Cechu a Slovakia v Rakousku ye slavnostnf dvorane hotelu Bohemia ve Vidni zahajilo lettArif masopust. Na plese vyhtavala dechovka a dZezova, skupina ustredni. hudby mesta Bratislavy. Krajansky spolek "Ludovita Stara" v australskern Mellbourne slavnostne otevfel novy kulturn1 dam. Slavnosti se ztleastnili generalni konzul Ceskoslovenske socialisticke republiky, generaln1 konzul Sjednocene federativni. republiky Jugoslavie, labouristicky poslanec Federalnibo parlamentu B.O. Jones, da1§1 poslanci, hoste a asi 500 krajanfi.

K prilelitosti 40. vyroef ustaven1 Cs. partyzanske brigady Jana 2i2ky z Trocnova v SR Chorvatsku v Jugoslgvii, ktere se bude konat v priStim roce, uvaZuje Svaz Cechti a Slovakia o natoeenl filmu a zaloien1 muzea, ktere by shromaZdilo exponaty, tYrkajlef se teto brigady.

Z podnetu Demokratickeho svazu Slovakil v Mad'arsku v .zajmu

rozvijenf matetskeho jazyka byl v Beke§ske, Komaromske a Pe§tianske Zupe pH. Spoleenosti pro §iteni vedeckych poznatkfi zalo2en narodni slovensky vybor.

Krajansky masopust ye Vidni pokraeoval od poloviny ledna po cely tinor. Kaldy tyden organizoval nektery z krajanskych poeinaje Sdrut'enim Cecht a Slovaktii, dale sportovni klub Slovan, Sokol Weil X. a Sokol I. a V. sve plesy, na nicht" po ka2de deinkovala hudba z Ceskoslovenska.

Na masopustnf zalbave krajanskeho spolku BESEDA v Zapadnim Berline vyhravala na gm krajaninn k poslechu i k tanci Morayska dechovka z Brna, hudebni soubor JZD 1. maj Pozotice.

Ceskoslovensky ustav zahranieni delegace Svazu Cechil a Slovakil v Jugoslavii, vedeni ptedsedou Jaromilem Kubiekem a ptedsedkyne Klubu es. Turistii v Rakousku pan'''. H. Pimmerova. *** Mistoptedseda vyboru Ceskoslovenskeho iistavu zahranieniho, narodni umelec, spisovatel Vladimir Mina' oslavil 60. narozeniny. K vyznarrinemu 2ivotnimu jubileu obdr2e1 statni vyznamenani Rad vitezneho dnora a Medaili Ladislava Novomeskeho.

Z dvournesientho tune se vratil z USA spisovatel Miroslav Ivanov, ktery v soueasne dobe pfge knihu o vyznaenem eeskem hudebnim sldadateli Antoninu Dvota,kovi, ktery pasobil ten v zamoti.

Poboeka Slovenskeho podpizneho spolku v Montrealu uspotadala i letos eeske dny ye Stranbridge, za hojne tlea,sti krajanil a kanadskych obeanii, ptatel CSSR. Slavnosti se ztleastnili pracovnici generaliiiho konzulatu z Montrealu.

V Montevideu v Uruguay se konalo u pomnika postavenem na pamatku vyhlazeni Lidic tradieni vzpominkove shroma2deni ke 40. vyroei lidicke tragedie, za tleasti na§ich krajanii a pracovnIku es. velvyslanectvi.

Na pozvani Cs. ustavu zahranieniho cllela v CSSR zaeatkem fijna 4 elenna, delegace Svazu Cechtii a Slovakti z Jugoslavie. Belem pobytu byla dojednana konkretni spoluprace na rok 1983.

V zati se se§la kulturni komise Vyboru Ceskoslovenskeho ustavu zahranieniho, ktera se zabyvala my§lenkou zfizeni muzea vystehovalectvi v Praze.

Absolventi eeskych §kol v Daruvaru a Koneenici v Jugoslavii podnikli v srpnu 14ti dennf zajezd do Ceskoslovenska.

Podzimnf zasedani ptedsednictva Demokratickeho svazu Mad'ara v BudapeSti projednalo zpravu o osvetove einnosti Skol se slovenskym vyueovacim jazykem a zpravu o einnosti slovenskych oblastnich muzei.

Velvyslanec CSSR v PLR J. kehotek zavital mezi krajany na Spi§i.

Krajansky spolek Cecha a Slovakil "Beseda" v Zap. Berlin uspotadal v zarf vyroeni zabavu, na ktere mu vyhravala dechova hudba ``Chodovanka" z Doma2lic.

RE ZERVACE Od vyhla§enf historickeho jadra Olomouce (Olomouc) (Severomoravsky kraj) pamatkovou rezervaci uplynu]o deset roku. Na plo§e sto hektarti je zde 266 chranenych kulturnich pamatek, z toho 78 zylaSt' yyznamnych, mezi nimi i narodn1 kulturn1 pamatka: areal palace premyslovskych kralu.

Olomouc byla dlouho strediskem mora y skeho markrabst yl. Dale mistem druhelio biskupstvi v eeskych zernIch, vyznamnym mcstem politiky, kultury a hospodafstvf.

Mestsky narodn1 vyrbor (ilzemni organ statni moci a spravy) v Olomouci schvatil v roce 1972 koncepci obnovy historickeho -Odra mesta. Koncepce je vypracovana do roku 1990 a je uptesriovana petiletymi programy.

V letech 1976-1980 byly na pamatkove chranenych objektech v rezervaci v Olomouci provedeny prace za 120 miliOnta korun. Byla opravena east mestskych hradeb, dale nekolik desitek meSfanskych tzv. morovy sloup na namesti Miru, nekolik baroknfch kakn, byla obnovena rada fasa,d a portalti a bylo restaurovano nekolik soch. Pokraeovaly prace na obnove a zpristupnen1 Premyslovskeho palace.

Na tizemi mestske pamatkove rezervace v Olomouci se uskuteenilo take nekolik zachrannych archeolog4eVch v3izkumn, ktere ohjevily cenne pozastatky mj. i z obdobi Velkomorayske He (9. stoletf n.1.).

Celkem bylo nalezeno na 460 000 rtIzqch predmetn.

V soucasne petiletce (1981-1985) venuje ministerstvo kultury Ceske socialisticke republiky na zachranu a ubnovu kulturnich pamatek v Olomouci 180 milionn korun.

SCHOLARSHIP Program For SPJST Members

Criteria for selecting scholarship winners from among high school seniors include: • Results of the S.A.T. and/or A.C.T. • High school records • References and recommendations • The Committee's judgment of the applicant's potential

The Slavonic Benevolent Order of The State of Texas established a Scholarship Fund in 1982 to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by SPJST members, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in youth and in our economic and social progress.

Applicants who are college undergraduates must submit official transcripts of past college work with their application.

The Committee's decisions will be announced before the beginning of the fall semester.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE

Scholarship winners may attend any college in the United States of America accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. It must remain in force during the tenure of the scholarship.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

The SPJST will award scholarships in the following amounts: Four-year program . . .

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

SELECTION Scholarships are awarded by a Committee selected by the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. The Committee consists of persons who have a recognized standing in the field of education and who are not associated in any other way with the SPJST or the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

RESPONSIBILITY OF SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

ADMINISTRATION The SPJST Supreme Lodge has full authority to establish the rules and regulations governing the Scholarship Program or to amend them as it deems necessary. Administration and financing of the programs are the exclusive responsibility of the SPJST. The Committee has exclusive jurisdiction in selecting scholarship winners. It acts in an advisory capacity to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The SPJST assumes no responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs, or debts of scholarship winners or scholarship applicants and will not be liable therefore in any manner.

PAYMENT OF AWARDS Funds covering scholarship awards are remitted direct to the accredited college selected by the recipient as a payment toward the required tuition and fees.

If a scholarship recipient enters military service, the scholarship will be held in reserve for a period of up to six (6) months after the date of his/her release from service. Illness or injury that causes a delay in acceptance or continuance of a scholarship will also be considered good cause for holding an award in reserve.

The SPJST annually awards $1,000 first year scholarships for high school graduates and $500 scholarships for college undergraduates.

Winners of an SPJST scholarship must enter an accredited college not later than the fall term following the announcement of the scholarship award. They must attend college on a full-time basis and carry a normal academic load without interruption and in accordance with the college

Applicants who are high school seniors must take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.) or the American College Test (A.C.Y.) given by the
