KVVTX-TV's PM Magazine Visits SPJST Museum

Central Texans should mark their calendars for November 11, 1982 at 6:30 p.m., as KWTX-TV Channel 10, Waco's PM Magazine hosted by Dixie Huey and Alan Carter will feature a tour through the SPJST Museum.

Two employees at the Home Office watching the program, and not knowing the other was going to suggest our Museum or Curator, notified the station. Ruth Hanusch of the Insurance Department, called KWTX-TV and Lanita Anglin of the Loan Department wrote the station.

Both were very complimentary and proud of the Museum and its Curator. Everything was forgotten until this past Tuesday, October 26th when,to his surprise, Br. Hanus received a call from KWTX asking for permission to visit that afternoon. The rest is history!

We certainly hope you find time to watch PM Magazine on Channel 10, Thursday at 6:30 and receive your guided tour with your hosts, Dixie Huey and Alan Carter.

October 24th was the date of another successful district meeting held in the Sokol 2. i gka Athletic Center, with SPJST Lodge Jaro No. 130 hosting the event; this was the last meeting of the season.

Some time ago, we mentioned these meetings were for the purpose to add more interest in the affairs of our Society. According to our governing By-laws, districts should hold two district meetings each year, with the exception of District VI, which is a geographical area.

These districts usually held brief business sessions, with time devoted for activities of the youth and opportunities for others to fraternize.

Most of our active lodge members agree that district meetings can do a world of good, if properly conducted.

It is a fact that a presiding officer can make any meeting a success or failure, and with his well-organized and timely agenda, it was Brother Vernon Wood, District III president, who contributed greatly to the success of District III's meeting.

From the nine lodges represented at Sunday's meeting, much attention was paid to each committee chairman's report, including District III Director, Sid Pokladnik's, who stressed the importance of his attendance at the recent National Fraternal Congress (NFC) in Florida. He was elected director on the NFC Board for 1983; likewise, SL Vice President Bernie Gebala will also serve as a director.

Our lodges need to concentrate on keeping records for charity contributions and voluntary services, to enable our SPJST to stay on a nonprofit basis. The forms mailed to each lodge annually from the Home Office must be completed pertaining to the hours members have worked voluntarily, and the monetary, food, blood, etc. contributions of each member; these must be completed and submitted to the financialsecretary at the Supreme Lodge so he can mail the forms to the National Fraternal Congress Home Office for their review.

In the life insurance business, as in all businesses, there are constant changes and improvements. Eightyfive years ago, the SPJST started with assessments. We have since graduated to regular payments and mathematically correct premiums.

In our 85th year, the SPJST has initiated an annuity program, which was approved through referendums from the 1980 convention delegates.

Another item in the insurance department is the Scholarship Program for SPJST members. The SPJST established a Scholarship Fund this year to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. This program is funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions

by SPJST members; the Scholarship Program is administered by the Supreme Lodge as an investment in our youth and in our economic and social progress.

Applicants or candidates for the SPJST scholarships will be through

the voluntary services of Mary Hardin-Baylor University faculty, who are not connected with the SPJST. On the back page of last week's Vestnik and in coming issues is a form to complete and submit; please send it to the: SPJST SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, ATTENTION — INSURANCE DEPARTMENT, P. 0. BOX 100, TEMPLE, TX 76503. Deadline for this program is December 31st of each fiscal year.

At the last quarterly Supreme Lodge meeting, the board voted to lower interest rates on loans from 141/2 percent to 13 percent to members who are policyholders of a $25,000 certificate; otherwise additional life insurance must be added to your personal investment before an SPJST loan may be granted. Transactions in the past proved that too many loan applicants had more insurance with someone else than with the SPJST; therefore, if you are interested in applying for a loan, contact your district director or the Home Office.

Our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes in Taylor (I) and Needville (II) have proven to be successful charitable institutions, with scores of individuals voluntarily performing services for the occupants and contributions continually being donated. The State Welfare Department keeps close specifications on all Texas rest homes, and both S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes are rated as two of the top and finest in the state; our homes' administrators, Mrs. Schwenker and Mr. Marx make it possible. Rest Homes Director Sid Pokladnik mentioned that the former "Moucka Fund," which was started by the late Sister Bozena Valcik of Lodge 130, is called a "Charitable Fund," which is reserved for special purposes.

District III is the first district which started its youth clubs and they have maintained a record of long, active standing. These lodges' youth clubs include Cottonwood No. 6, Elk No. 35, Waco No. 66, and Dallas No. 84. At many district meetings, these youth clubs are present and take an active part in whatever activity is designed by their counselors. Our compliments to these lodges and may they continue for a long time. The newlyelected DYC, Sister Bessie Petr of Lodge 84, is no newcomer to the SPJST youth department; she has been a member for many years and is the only youth leader in the entire SPJST who has served in this capacity longer than anyone else.

She also has a special way of handling children; a good example was exemplified Sunday in the youth program, which was composed of pre-school age children who stole the show with their special numbers in costume. District III is also fortunate to have Sister Rosemary Banik and her son, Eddie Banik of Lodge 35, Elk. This district is known for having the most State YAD winners because of so many dedicated youth leaders. Our hats off to all of you!

After the District III meeting adjourned, some time was left to reminisce about old times and to enjoy the delicious food prepared by the host lodge members.

Fort Worth Lodge 154 volunteered to host the next District III meeting which will be the spring ;meeting in 1983,,

Out of the 115 sales representatives in District II, 30 were in attendance at these seminars, along with their spouses. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those not present to join us in keeping abreast of the changing times of the 80's.

District V Meeting The fall meeting of District V was held at Lodge 88 October 10, 1982.

President Tillie Helmcamp called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

District Flag Bearer Mark Mynar and Lodge 88 Flag Bearer Lynn Pflughaupt presented the colors and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Sister Helen Hegwood, accompanied by Sister Naomi Spencer, gave a beautiful rendition of the English and Czech national anthems.

Lodge 88 President Larry Pflughaupt gave a warm welcome to all, stating that the district is a band that strengthens our organization; he thanked the members for

attending and asked if they had enjoyed the lunch. Brother John Hilsher and the Kitchen Committee received a big hand of applause.

The response was given by 1st Vice President Jerry Prochazka who said we just participated in what a district is all about; that is, coming to a central place, enjoying the company, and breaking bread together. He thanked Lodge 88 for hosting the meeting and for the good meal.

President Helmcamp asked the members to stand in silent tribute to the departed members of our district.

In her report, Youth Counselor Joyce Mynar expressed her wishes that more youth were present. She announced that our district had a great time at camp in August with 36 youth attending. As voted in the convention, all money not used for camp must be turned back. The district was well-represented at State YAD, but we need more participation. The youth presented three short skits which were enjoyed by all. A big hand of applause was given the youth workers and the youth.

They left to hold their own meeting.

2nd Vice President Sidon Tumis introduced the guests: Sister Albina Hilsher, District VII Director Thelma Hrncir, her husband and daughter of Corpus Christi.

Secretary Viola Cox called the roll of lodges with the following ten represented: 65, 81, 88, 91, 139, 142, 156, 172, 173, 175. President Helmcamp requested that all lodge presidents stand. Those present were Charlie Matcek (81), Larry Pflughaupt (88), Alvin Franta (91), Mary Ann Kieschnik (142), Dan Berry (172), Alvin Sefcik (173), Frank Jozie (175).

The president then requested that all delegates to the last convention stand. The secretary read the minutes which were approved as read. She then read the correspondence.

Members appointed to the Auditing Committee were Jerry Ermis (88), Charlie Matcek (81), and Alvin Franta (91).

Sister Helmcamp gave special thanks to Director Tim Kostom and the Choral Club and to Director.

Ruby Dybala and the Czech Concert Orchestra for their fine entertainment; to Sisters Hegwood and Spencer for the anthems; to 2nd Vice President Frances Olexa, President Larry Pflughaupt and the Publicity Committee for the good publicity of the meeting; to Brothers John Hilsher, Alvin Raymond, Mike Trefell and their helpers for the good luncheon; to all who cooperated and all who came to the meeting.

In her good report on our district youth, President Helmeamp stressed the importance of more youth participating, explaining how the Camp Fund is allocated according to the number of participants. She reminded lodges that do not have a Youth Club that their youth can still go to camp by attending their lodge meetings and functions, helping when possible; the lodge secretary then notifies the district youth counselor as to who is eligible. Sister Helmcamp stated that much depends on the parents encouraging the children to participate and asked all members to spread the word about our fine youth program.

Treasurer Tommy Lostak reported a balance of $3,432.12 in the district fund and $2,069.78 in the youth fund.

Rest Home Director Herbert Nowotny reported that the home is full with a long waiting list. At their last meeting, the directors asked the man in charge to get the cost of a new wing; the demand is heavy.

Brother Nowotny hopes something can be done to increase the capacity of the home. They have a good manager and helpers with good relations between the help and the patients.

Representing the Supreme Lodge, Director Louis Hanus gave an interesting report. He stated that the SPJST ranks as #25 of the 55 fraternal organizations in the nation. He reported that the actuary is formulating a new annuity plan.

Brother Hanus stated that District V is still first in insurance issued for the past nine months.

Twelve of the top thirty sales representatives in the current contest are from our district. Sister Georgia Lostak (91) was the top sales winner in September. There will soon be a new training manual for sales representatives.

The director has attended several investment seminars and functions throughout the state. He attended the National Fraternal Congress Convention in Hollywood, Florida, where one of the guest speakers was F. Lee Bailey, famous defense attorney, whose topic was "The Defense Never Rests". This organization is important in keeping our tax free status.

Brother Hanus stated that the new banking law recently passed by Congress is very important and will help small investors. The faithful few who attend meetings are also very important.

Auditing Chairman Charlie Matcek reported that the books were in order and moved that they be accepted, seconded by Brother Alvin Sefcik and so passed, Sister Joyce Mynar returned from the youth meeting. She asked all lodges besides 88 and 142 to invite her to visit their meetings and she would be there.

There was no old business. Under new business, the president stated that since Rest Home Director Nowotny concludes his term on 12/31/82, we need. to have an election. Brother Charlie Matcek nominated Brother Herbert Nowotny who was elected to another term by acclamation. He thanked the members for their trust and promised to do his best.

Sister Helmcamp explained that she and Vice President Prochazka are appointing a special Youth Committee to study ways of improving our youth participation. Those appointed were: Chairman Joyce Mynar, Betty Dobesh and Dorothy Pflughaupt of Lodge 88; Mary Ann Kieschnik and Henrietta Veselka of 142; Dan Berry of 172. The president said they will try to get members of other lodges to be on this committee and asked the presidents to recommend someone. The committee will meet after the grand opening of Lodge 172, Pasadena.

Director Hanus, Lodge 88 President President Pflughaupt and Helmcamp will meet with them.

Brother Louis Hanus suggested possibly having one meeting per year and asked if we should talk

about this at the spring meeting.

Brother Charlie Matcek made a motion to table this until the next meeting. Motion was seconded by Brother Alvin Sefeik and so passed.

Pasadena President Dan Berry offered to host the spring meeting.

Brother Charlie Matcek moved that it be at Lodge 172, seconded by Brother Tommy Lostak, and so passed.

Vice President Prochazka made the announcements. He reported on Czech Day at Lodge 88 October 24, giving details on the various entertainment groups, the turkey dinner and free dance. Then he reported on the Grand Opening of Lodge 172, Pasadena, which will include a delicious dinner, great entertainment by several groups besides Lodge 88 Choral Club and Czech Concert Orchestra.

Brother Prochazka stated that our district meetings are streamlined and have a lot of value in them.

If we cut down to one meeting per year, the same group would probably come that comes now.

President Helmcamp gave special recognition to faithful "young" members who always attend our meetings: Brother Joe Skrabanek, Sister Frances Olexa, and Brother Charlie Matcek. She also recognized Professor W. Souchek who spoke briefly on the progress of teaching the Czech language.

Hrncir said it was good to be here at the meeting. She further stated that our emphasis on the youth is fantastic.

President Helrncamp thanked Sister Janet Raymond for having charge of the door prize tickets.

Little Karl Pflughaupt did the drawing of the tickets and the names of winners were read by Brother Alvin Sefcik. Seven door prizes of $5 each were donated by Tim Kostom, A. J. Stayton, Joy Plyler, Joanna Plyler, Sidon Tumis, Viola Cox and Tillie Helmcamp.

Winners were Jeff Barcak, Bill Witovec, Frances Pustejovsky, Paul Grondis, Angie Hrncir, Vlasta Nowotny, and Vernon Hegwood. A $10 savings deposit was donated by Liberty Savings & Loan Association and was won by Clifton Pate. A cake donated by the Birthday Club was won by Anna Hoffman.

Brother Dan Berry of Pasadena explained about the three prizes donated by Tillie Helmcamp for their lodge from which $116 was made. The winners of the 3 prizes were Sisters Mary Matcek and Erna O'Connor and Brooks Eubank.

Immediately following the meeting which adjourned at 4 p.m., free refreshments were served.

Donors of the beer were Royal & Laura Warnasch - Roy-Bel Distributing Company, and donor of the soda water was Director Louis Hanus.

Hallettsville Plans Election Of Officers Dear Members: Lodge 4 held its regular monthly meeting Sunday, October 3, 1982, in the Grant Building with lodge presi dent, Brother Frank Zabransky, presiding.

Pledge to the flag was led by Tommy and Melissa Holy.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the July and August meetings which were approved as read.

Reports were given by Co-Youth Leader Evelyn Holy and Treasurer Helen Zabransky.

Plans were then made for the District VI meeting which was hosted by our lodge, October 10th.

Helen Zabransky was appointed to purchase the supplies needed for that day.

Members were reminded that election of officers for the coming year will be held at the November meeting as usual.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave his report. Refund checks were given out and meeting adjourned.

Refreshments and lunch were served which were enjoyed.

August birthdays honored were: Patsy Zabransky, Erwin Holy, Otto Holy, and Joe Barcak who received the birthday cake.

September birthday celebrants were: Alvin Mikush and Hilmer Galetka, winner of the birthday cake.

October birthdays recognized were for Frank Zabransky and Evelyn Holy who won the birthday cake.

Door prize winners were: Mrs. Vernon Zak, adult; Gary Chudej, youth.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, November 14th in the Grant Bldg., beginning at 2 p.m. Members are encouraged to attend; officers for the coming year will be elected!

Dear Members: The November meeting will be held November 7th, in the lodge hall, at 2 p.m. Central Standard Time.

The agenda will cover standard reports, a report on the District VI meeting and any business needing attention. The "Gathering" will take place after the meeting, as always.

The October meeting, on the 3rd, started on time when the buzzer sounded at 2:30 p.m. CDT for the last time this year. All reports were accepted as given. One motion was passed regarding the membership of a proposed new member. The door prize was won by Sister Aline Kortis. The meeting adjourned to the coffee pot.

Brother Ludvig Dobesh, we have not seen you in a long, long time and it was so nice of you to venture out in your wheelchair. Ludvig was surrounded with several members of his family; daughter, Elsie Gilfond, used to be one of the stars in our Czech stage plays, also Lillie Folette, his sister-in-law, participated on our stage, too; both were talented. Aunt Millie Divoky of Arcola, Texas used to come to most of our Czech performances; it was nice to see you, again!

Son Gene with spouse, Betty, (our assistant youth leader) have a daughter, Debbie, and son, Craig.

Cousin Frank Dolezal, sales representative for Lodge 88, finished the Dobesh family circle; they were wellrepresented.

Richard and Lila Baletka with daughter, Brenda, and her husband, Paul, and their children, Stephanie and Stacy, and another pair of grandchildren, Alvin and Becky Telshow, enjoyed the day with their family and especially the grandchildren.

In the Blue Room a lively party went on by a group of young people playing a guitar and singing Czech songs. They had lovely voices and it would have been so much more enjoyable if the volume would have been lower.

Sister Germcin Nitchman (I have known this lovely lady about 2 or 3 years) always attended the lodge activities by herself and I never realized her being married. Germcin and her son, August, both are members; but her husband, August E. Nitchman, was not and as far as I know he never came with his wife, therefore, I was very much surprised when Homer Alexander, our Entertainment Chairman, approached me Sunday and asked me to come to speak to one of our sisters feeling very hurt for not having even a slight mention made about her husband passing away. August E. Nitchman died of a heart attack while mowing the front lawn May 27, 1982. We were sorry but there was no way of knowing if the office was not notified.

Mr. August E. Nitchman was not a member, but, if it would have been known, be assured that I would have extended our sympathy. Accept our belated sympathy and visit our lodge as before.

Glad to hear that Bill Vasek, husband of Lena Vasek, is finally at home from Rosewood Hospital since last Thursday and, with his wife's care, he is slowly recuperating. Bill underwent surgery, was released, and, a few days later, had to go back to the hospital and have some corrections made and is now at home.

Wish you good luck and get-well fast; we all miss Lena at Thursday night socials.

A nice vacation was enjoyed by Jonnie and Rose Kopenitz, leaving Houston October 9th and returning October 17th. They traveled through six states and naturally in Las Vegas they had to try their luck and, for two solid days, tried to fill their pockets with that loot. How lucky they were, who knows? It's still a mystery! They had the pleasure to marvel at the wonders of the world, Boulder City, Nevada, California, Utah, Oregon and so on. Jonnie and Rose attend our

social activities every week with friends Jim and Margerette Witovec and William and Bess Witovec; they all are members.

Among the guests Sunday, I spotted Edwin and Millie Marek of Rosenberg, Texas. Millie is the daughter of the late Frank Nemec who was a lifelong member and transferred to Lodge 88 from Ganado, Texas. He was well-known for his dairy at Addicks, Texas.

We missed Lillie Spies, treasurer of the Birthday Club. She is home from her bus tour for two weeks now and still that cold is hanging on; get well so we may hear about your two-week trip.

Frank Tymel, out of Spring Branch Hospital and on crutches, came out to be with his fellow members on Czech Day. As far as I know Frank will be on the spot on any occasion if his health permits him; Frank, you look pretty good.

There is another thing I wish to mention about our devoted members.

After working for three days (and many did), they dressed in their Czech costumes and joined the parade; isn't that wonderful? They deserve a big THANK YOU! Before closing of this writing, I received a phone call from Frances Dvorak that Leddie Kadera had another surgery this afternoon at 2:30 and was placed in the intensive care unit. Leddie is in Heights Hospital about six weeks now and this is the second time she underwent surgery.

Leddie is a faithful Birthday Club Sister and we all miss you. Get-well soon!

154, Ft. Worth Calls Attention To November 14th Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: We had a wonderful day Sunday for the District III meeting. Several of our members attended and enjoyed it very much. The meeting ran smoothly and a delicious dinner was served, the sisters did a good job and Brother Arnold Vrla also had his hands in helping. The hospitality was great. It is always good to see everyone, but more should have attended. Fort Worth Lodge 154 will host the spring meeting.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to our District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik who was honored at a Surprise Party, Saturday night at his home. Sister Justine pulled a good one on him with a hundred guests present.

We hope you have 70 more good years. Also "Happy Birthday" to our Editor Brother Rudy Sefcik who will be 39 and holding Friday.

I want to remind you again to call and make reservations for the Christmas Party by Sunday, November 14, our meeting date. You won't want to miss this party. I noticed a change in the band; Henry Rejcek will play. Call 237-1500, 6248631 or 921-2397.

Dear Members and Friends: It's been so long since last I have written to the Vestnik!

The Matt Vaneks prompted me to write so I will attempt to do so. Mr. and Mrs. Matt Vanek had their two sons transferred to our lodge. I don't know how to express the appreciation for our lodge. There are not enough words to express our thanks.

Matt knows how much our lodge would like to grow so we wouldn't have to disband. Brother Vanek has written a few policyholders to our lodge in the last 3 or 4 years and that's besides transferring his sons and he has one or two prospects; what our lodge needs is a sales representative! We don't have many members to come to the meetings.

Most of our members have paid-up policies so they don't come; there are only five or six members who do attend our meetings. We call it just a women's meeting, but we enjoy our meetings. We have lots of fun after the meeting; refreshments are also served; in fact, we also have maids to help serve and they are all members of our lodge. We meet every second Monday of each month.

However, we do skip some meetings.

Fall weather is here but we still feel the summer weather; one thing I can say is that we finally got that wonderful rain with a few cool nights.

Now, I must write a few words for one of our members; we are so proud to say something about him; we have known him since he was born; he is none other than John Sharp who is now our State Representative. We all are proud of him and I know if we need any type of help, he is willing to do so. We wish him the best.

One more thing I wish to say is that, with John Sharp's help, we were able to enroll our granddaughter, Kelly Gerhold, to Texas A&M University; she is the daughter of Elva Jean Gerhold, our daughter. Elva Jean is a member of Lodge 97, Placedo, Fraternally, Vlasta Baros -SPJST-

Lodge 172 Pasadena Is Ready For Grand Opening And Dedication Dear Members and Friends: Two weeks ago today we were selling cakes, kolaches and coffee at the first Pasadena Family Festival at the Strawberry Park Pavilion in Pasadena. This was a different festival from the Strawberry Festival held in April in which we won a grand prize trophy located at the Rodeo Grounds on Red Bluff Road.

This festival which took place two weeks ago was sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Committee of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce in an effort to provide an afternoon of family entertainment for all ages.

Although it almost rained it out, it was well-attended and it is intended to become an annual affair. We cleared $363.16 on the cakes, kolaches and coffee, that we sold in one afternoon. Thank you members and friends for donating these goodies to sell and sharing in the work. They were the following persons: Vicky Dressler, Joyce Kimmons, Margie Berry, Leona Zella, Amelia Tofte, Silvia Hugo, Doris Schomberger, Ann Stickney, Gladys Emmons, Marie Appelt, Henrietta Krenek, Butch Simcik, Anna Hlavaty, Tennie Walla, Ann Bingham, Lorine Wiley, Bonnie Brinlee, Betty Jo Yonley, Helen Wallace, Cecelia Klechka, Hilda Wiederhold and Vlasta Machann.

Several of the men helped set-up our booth and helped with making the coffee. Thanks!

Amelia Tofte and Vicky Dressler had a garage sale last week and did real well (about $500 worth). Thanks again everyone for helping and donating it. This was the second garage sale. All these activities take time and work and we need more of them.

My friend learned to do the Watusi the other day; he never took lessons just tied his shoelaces together and did the Fox Trot.

Sunday, November 14th will be the regular monthly meeting at the hall at 6:30 p.m. so if you members want to know what's going on at your lodge, plan to be there and also keep in mind that in December is election of officers so be thinking of who you want to be your officers for the coming year and be there to vote.

Saturday, November 20th there will be a fund-raising sponsored by Emory Air Freight and Lodge 183 to help a young man in great need. His name is Larry Sasteain who has leukemia and is now in the Arlington Memorial Hospital. He is 31 years old and has three children under 5 years old. He and his family need all of the help, financially, that we can give them to help pay expenses and also our prayers to help him get well again. There will be a donation at the door, a covered-dish luncheon beginning at 4 p.m. and, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., a band will be playing for dancing. All money taken in will go to Larry and his family. Come on out and show this family the true meaning of SPJST. Our sympathy to Phill Boyles and his family on the death of his mother.

On the sick list is B. J. Hlavaty's mother who is very ill; our prayers go out to them and we hope she has a speedy recovery.

Saturday, October 30, from 6 to 9 p.m. should prove to be a red-letter day for communities surrounding Alvin, Texas!

A cordial invitation is extended to everyone to participate in this area wide fall festival. The idea of a school activity of this nature is twofold. All college organizations use this opportunity as a fund raising event. The people support it wholeheartedly to better supervise the youngsters during the trick-or-treat day.

Detailed plans of our Czech Class make it one of the leaders in this energetic action. Czech pastries abound. Kolaches served with coffee or sold by the dozen seem to disappear as if by magic! Strudel, candy, Czech books, together with numerous ethnic goodies are on sale.

Czech magazines are given away as long as quantities last.

The Czech Class accumulates its funds to support the central theme of providing annual scholarships for two lucky Czech students. The stipends help in defraying expenses of a college education.

So, — Come enjoy yourselves, mingle with friends who also desire to lend a helping hand in someone's preparation for life!

Your participation in our activity will prove to all that you wish to make our school system even better than it is.

Dear Members: Lodge 184 in Moulton has changed its annual meeting from December to November 10 at 7 p.m. on account of too much conflict in December; school children have their parties and sometimes it's the weather.

After the meeting there will be a stew supper and election of officers will also take place at this meeting.

Dear Members and Friends: November is almost here, and it is the month of nostalgic memories of Goldenrods nodding in the breeze, apple and pear trees with branches loaded with fruit waiting to be picked while bumble bees buzz around looking for sweets. Best of all, Thanksgiving with the family getting together and giving thanks around the bountiful table.

The Ladies Circle meeting opened with Mary Powers, president, calling the meeting to order. Clara Marchioni, secretary, read the minutes and the treasurer's report was read by Hermina Cihacek as Mary Ann Krivanek was absent.

A "Thank You" note was read from Lydia Palachek thanking all the members for the card and money while she was in the hospital.

Lillie McMillen reported that all the members were doing real well; no sickness had been reported.

Later we learned that Mary Hubenak was going to St. Joseph's Hospital for tests and that S. P. Lindsey of Weatherford, Texas was taken to Harris Hospital with a heart attack. I understand that both of them are now at home and we hope are doing well. We also heard

that Henry Langer had fallen and hurt himself but was now recuperating.

Mary Saldana has just returned from Porto Rico where she has been visiting her nieces. They are. Maria Salto, Careen Jubes, Nestar Castro and Nidya Gaytia. She will bring pictures to show at the next meeting.

Hermina, Phylis, and Mary Cihacek showed some really interesting pictures of some of their past trips in foreign countries, such as, Japan, Australia, Austria, and Germany. We really enjoyed them.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Mary Cihacek, Frances Jaworski, Helen Paprskar, Mary Palachek, Mary Saldana, Frank Tesar and Mary Hale. We hope they have many more.

The door prize was won by Helen Paprskar which was donated by "The Flower Mart" and Esta Belle Hubenak.

Our Thanksgiving Dinner will be November 9th. Esta Belle Hubenak and Josephine Prochaska have volunteered to cook the turkey and dressing. All members have volunteered different vegetables. All ladies who were absent and will come to this meeting either bring a salad or a pie. All adult guests will pay $2.50 and children $1.25.

Choral Club News

The Seaton Choral Club reports a successful performance well received by the attendance at the 42nd Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas.

Besides the singing at the two appearances, they sang the lovely Czech songs with a few English favorites all the way to and from Dallas on the bus trip which was made enjoyable by food, including a songbird birthday cake baked by Judy Pechal, hot and cold drinks, and merry conversation.

Those who sang at the Bandshell in Dallas were: Mrs. Anne Zvolanek, Leon and Vallie Zavodny, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Lillian and Frank Mikulec, Emily Stuteville, Otto Hanus, Della Psencik, Mary Holick, Agnes Schiller, Dorothy Morris, Martha Klusacek, Thelma Bartosh, Calvin and Mildred Chervenka, Helen and Henry Janacek, our accompanist, and Annie Jakubec, our song leader.

Instead of the regular singing session at Star Hall, the Choral Club met at the Golden Heritage Nursing Home and sang for the pleasure of its residents. Those bringing cheer to them were: Emily Stuteville, Ruby Bolton, Emily Dohnalik, Dorothy Morris, Anne Zvolanek, Della Psencik, Mary Holick, Agnes Schiller, Dorothy Pechal, Georgia Sodek, Anne Krcha, Martha Klusacek, Thelma Bartosh, Helen and Henry Janacek and Annie Jakubec.

The club will meet to sing at the Southland Villa Nursing Home, November 9 at 7:15 p.m. to bring joy and songs to those residents.

Dallas Circle Of Czech Women Dear Readers: Hello again! A special hello to you, Georgia Kucera, in Alabama. I understand that Georgia reads the "Vestnik" and enjoys our report very much. I lived in Dothan, Alabama for a short time while my husband was stationed there. Is that close to you, Georgia?

Our Circle met Thursday, October 7th with thirty members and four guests present. The guests were Dick Grounds, Bob Zvolanek, George Skotak and Margurite Christe.

Lydia Dirkx called the meeting to order and asked for a moment of silence for Lorraine Zdenek and Lillian Trojacek.

Our secretary and treasurer made their reports, and in the absence of our corresponding secretary, Mary Sebestik gave the report.

Sympathy Thank-You cards were read from the families of Emma Pavelka and Lorraine Zdenek. A letter was read from Lorraine Zdenek. This letter was sent to our Circle shortly before Lorraine died.

Various committee reports were given as follows: "Sunshine Committee,": Get-well cards were sent to: Helen Vrla, Sr., Lillian Graeser, Frances Konakovsky's sister in Taylor, Texas. Sympathy cards were sent to: Joe and Adell Vlk and Vlasta Jurcik. Thinking of You cards sent to Mary Stransky and Mrs. John Slovak. Birthday Card chairman sent greetings to the following: Libby Slovak, Lydia Kartous, Hattie Ground, Bertha Podhrasky and Annabelle Bubak.

Gifts to the Ill Committee reported that a gift would be brought to Marie Petrik who has recently been hospitalized.

Membership Committee chairman reported the following members who have joined our Circle since our Membership Book was printed: Miss Rose Bednar, Mildred Cervenka, Esther Cunningham, Ella Fojt, Marilyn Fulbright, Lillian Graeser, Mary Kubacak, Miss Anne Oates, Diane Oates, Barbara Regmund, Henrietta Schindler and Patricia Wilson.

We often have several of our members sending their greetings and news to be announced at our meetings. Liddie Pavelka, we understand, was stranded in Colorado in a snow. How about that? Sounds like fun. Lillian Graeser fell and fractured her knee on hospital grounds.

She thanks the circle for her "GetWell" card. Lucille Stout sends her "hello" to all of us all the way from Ohio. She and her husband are doing well, but say they both miss Texas.

Donations were made to our Krouzek by George and Zdenka Skotak in memory of Emma Pavelka. Gilbert and Bessie Kalich made a donation in memory of Lillian Trojacek. Alice Roberts gave a donation to the "Sunshine Committee" for the purchase of cards or stamps in memory of Emma Pavelka and Lillian Trojacek.

Our Circle made a donation to the Library and Archives Fund, Sokol Organization in Berwyn, Illinois in memory of Lorraine Zdenek.

Getting into old business from our previous meeting, Mary Sebestik reported that only two locations would be convenient for our Christmas party. A vote was taken on whether we would prefer Wyatts Cafeteria in Northlake or Wyatts in Oak Cliff. It was decided we'd go to Oak-Cliff for a change. The Wyatts there is located in the "Wynnewood Shopping Center," at Zangs and Illinois. I'll give you the complete address in my next report. Our party will be Thursday, December 2nd. Be there around 10:30 and bring a small Christmas gift wrapped for gift exchange. Offer a ride, if you possibly can, to anyone you know who may be needing one.

Under old business I would like to mention that every month we have someone who brings a special door prize. I forgot to mention these nice ladies: Anne Zvolanek brought a pot plant one month, Vallie Tupy brought one dozen eggs, and Millie Bartek brought a half-dozen kolache.

Under new business we discussed whether or not we wish to contribute to the United Way Fund.

We have been contributing before.

The new bakery (Bohemian Bakery) was mentioned and our members were invited to come by and visit the new establishment. Now, we have two Czech bakeries here in Dallas where you can go and satisfy that sweet tooth. The other bakery is the Old World Bakery.

Bertha Podhrasky told us about the concert pianist, Richard Urbis, who will be performing at El Centro November 5th at twelve noon and then, again, at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas October 27th.

Gee, I have all kinds of good news about our members and their families. Grandmothers Vallie Tupy (a new grandson) and Martha Vrla (a new granddaughter) were bragging.

No one can possibly outbrag a grandmother, but why not? You have to be one to know.

Zdenka Skotak was so happy to tell us that her daughter received a $250 watch and $600 in merchandise for her sales in diamonds. She works for Montgomery Wards.

Alice and Tom Roberts have returned from their two-week vacation which included the "World's Fair" and several Eastern and Southern states. Alice, once again, won more money and a plaque in bowling. She sure could have made it as a professional bowler.

Esther Cunningham's daughter, Kathleen Smalky, is a first year medical student at the Southwestern Medical School here in Dallas, This is the same school from which her brother, Michael Smalky, graduated in June of 1981. Dr. Michael Smalky, son of Esther Cunningham, is doing his residency at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass. which is part of Harvard Medical School. He will be there through June, 1984. Kathleen and Michael are grandchildren of Ella Fojt of Snook, Texas, who is a member of the Circle of Czech Women.

Robert Cunningham recently returned from Ramstein A.B., Germany. He had two weeks of active duty with the Air Force

National Guard. While he was there he also visited with his children in Bavan, France for the weekend. He had not seen his children since November, 1979.

Anne and Bob Zvolanek are real winners! Bob received five ribbons in the Men's Garden Club Flower Show. Anne won four ribbons for her canned entries. She won on her pear, peach and fig preserves and for her pear relish. Congratulations, you two!

I would like to mention that for over thirty years now my husband, George, has been in charge of the Chevrolet display in the Automobile Building. He puts the entire family driving the pretty new cars in and out of the building each year during the State Fair.

After a poem entitled "Growing Old" was read to us by Millie Bartek, we adjourned our meeting and enjoyed a very good meal prepared by our hostesses: Lydia Dirkx, Esther Cunningham, Mary Sykora, Barbara Regmund, Virginia Blatney, Agnes Janecka, Helen Oates and Evelyn Cechan.

Be sure and go to the Fair and take in all the goodies and tell us what you did at our next meeting November 4th!

Awards Dinner At Sokol Zizka, Dallas An awards dinner will be held at Sokol Jan Zizka, Dallas, Texas, November 21st with awards given for 10, 20 and 30 years of service members.

Awards will also be given to Brother Joseph Pokladnik and Sister Helen Vrla for 40 years of service to Sokol Zizka.

An award will be given to Brother Joseph Holasek of West for 50 years of membership in Sokol Zizka.

Dinner will be served at 12 noon and a short gymnastic program will follow, Awards will be presented followed by a dance from 4 until 6 p.m. by Walter Kovar and the Polka Patriots.

Dinner will cost $5 per adult and $2.50 per child 12 and under.

I don't know who gave you this information which is incorrect. I, Rudy Laitkep am the manager and accordionist for the El Campo Polka Boys and did my business with Mr. Joe Rogers. Charlie Merta never has been associated with the El Campo Polka Boys, except being a very close friend of mine. By the way, Charlie Merta has his own band, too.

Please print this in the next Vestnik because we feel it deserves to be corrected. I always enjoy reading the Vestnik, keep it up.

Interment was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hlavaty was the mother of Lodge 183 President Bernard J. Hlavaty who also is a sales representative in Arlington, Texas. *** Wallace Gummelt, 58, of West died October 17th in a Waco hospital.

Services were held at 4 p.m. from the First Baptist Church in West. Interment was in Bold Springs near West.

Brother Gummelt was a member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

From the State Youth Director 1111111111111111M11111■11■111MIP 21 October 1982 Dear Youth Leader: We have carefully and thoroughly reviewed the first six months of the 1982-83 youth year.

In going over the quarterly reports we find that many youth clubs have consistently failed to turn in a report.

They're short-changing themselves, especially the youth. A fifty cent per youth reimbursement is returned to you for each youth club member attending each monthly meeting. This money can be added to the youth club's treasury to be used for projects, socials, or other activities. It is simply a matter of sending in the quarterly report. This only takes a few minutes of your time once every three months.

Wouldn't you like to receive a check for your youth club's attendance? The only requirement is that there must be at least 5 youth club members present at each monthly meeting.

A new activity for youth club members to earn extra points is the monthly Vestnik project. These are published once a month in our official organ and youth club members may earn from 5 to 15 points on these projects. These have proven to be very popular so far.

All Vestnik projects are graded by the SYD and points earned by the participating youth are returned to you. Youth leaders, many of you have had your youth clubs complete these Vestnik projects during your monthly youth club meetings. This is an excellent idea because so many more of the youth are earning extra points.

These projects have proven to be fun for everyone who has submitted them. Some of the youth and youth leader comments have been: "This is fun. I hope we have more." One youth leader states, "They did not know how much they didn't know about the rules of the SPJST youth club until they started working on this project."

One little girl commented, "I like puzzles, thank you." Our youth are learning more about the SPJST and are enjoying it. Let's get them involved and let them earn extra points.

The Youth Department would like to offer our assistance or service in any way. You need only to request our services, so the initiative must come from you.

Keeping enthusiasm alive within the youth clubs needs constant attention. We realize how much "competition" some of you have with the different school and other organizational activities. That is why we must strive to create new projects, activities, and socials for our youth.

One very successful event that takes place annually at Lodge 18 Elgin, Lodge 29 Taylor and Lodge 187 Round Rock is a May Fete. A king, queen, junior king and queen, prince, princess and tiny tots king and queen

are selected. There is a queen's court, flower girls, banner carriers, royal guards, royal pages, guards of honor, banner carriers and arch bearers.

Every youth club member is involved.

Guest speakers may be present during the afternoon. Sometimes, a May pole dance is performed and special entertainment is the highlight of the afternoon. Let us know if you're interested in staging this activity at your lodge.

Try to get your youth clubs involved in the community. Plan for community and charity projects. This lets the community where you live know that the SPJST youth club members are interested in public affairs and are an asset to the surrounding community.

Educational trips to museums, theaters, and plays are also enjoyed by the children.

Central Texas youth leaders can make arrangements for group rates so that their youth clubs can attend the Special Events Center in Austin.

They can see numerous attractions, such as the Ringling Brothers Circus, Ice Capades, and numerous singers and dancers. Check in your district as to what is available.

Most youth clubs were represented in the District YADs, yet the participation could have been better. We realize witn summer vacations, camp, and school activities, many youngsters are pressed for time. This is where we must start the youth club members working on their craft and talent entries as early as February and March. Most schools have a spring break. Perhaps during this time and your monthly lodge meetings, crafts can be constructed and finished in plenty of time for YAD. We all know talent entries need many hours of practice — the earlier the routine, skit, song or dance is decided upon the longer the youth will have to practice and memorize their routines. We realize you must have your monthly meetings, socials and activities but concentrating on YAD as early as the month of February or March would give all of you more time to prepare your youth clubs for the district YADs. Camp attendance was down 101 campers this year. This was due to school starting earlier in some districts, football and band practice, and some of our older youth working at summer jobs. All in all, camp was a success and we were all thankful that there were not any major accidents.

All seven districts were represented at State Royalty with a lovely queen, but only five districts were represented by kings. Each young lady and gentleman represented their districts with grace and dignity. They did a superb job of delivering their speeches. Many parents and grandparents, along with aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters of the participants, were there to support them, but where were all the other supporters of our SPJST youth? The DYCs were present and gave support to their district king or queen, but so many youth leaders were not there.

Your youth are representing your lodges on the district level and your districts at State. Your presence and moral support mean so much to the contestants! We don't want our royalty competition to "wither and die" for lack of your interest and support.

Songs were sung to build enthusiasm to let the candidates know they were getting 100% support from everyone in the district. Needless to say, that district's contestants fared well at State Royalty. Each one of us brought a Halloween decoration for our monthly project. They were judged and those who won received $3, $2 and $1, and those who did a Halloween decoration, but didn't win, received 50 cents.

CLYDE WHEELER, a resident of El Campo, Texas for 76 years and former owner of the Wheeler Funeral Home, who died Friday, September 24, 1982 at 11:50 p.m. in the El Campo Memorial Hospital.

Brother Wheeler was born March 24, 1904 in Upper Alton, Illinois, to the late J. E. and Lucinda Ann Johnson Wheeler and attained 78 years of age.

He was a member and a founder of the El Campo Rotary Club, a member of the El Campo Masonic Lodge, an active member of the First United Methodist Church and served several times on the El Campo ISD school board. He was also a member of the El Campo Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

Brother Wheeler enrolled his SPJST membership in Hillje Lodge No. 40.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Wheeler Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Campbell of the First United Methodist Church officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Imogene Ramsey Wheeler of El . Campo; two daughters, Anne Wheeler of Houston and Carol Wheeler Liston of Topeka, Kansas; a stepdaughter, Patricia Hodges of Baytown; a stepson, Dickey Ellis of Austin; and 8 grandchildren.

Mr. Lewis, born in Falls County to John and Rozena Davis Lewis, lived in Temple most of his life. He was a retired machinist for Santa Fe Railway. Mr. Lewis was a member of First United Methodist Church in Temple and the Lovell-Gleaners Sunday school class.

Survivors are his widow, Clara Lewis of Temple; a son, A. J. Lewis of Baytown; two daughters, Eva Johnson of Temple and Margie Lagrone of Houston; two sisters, Myrtle Burgess of Canyon Lake and Mrs. Robert J. Jones of Roswell, New Mexico; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

Monday, October 18, in the HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Temple with the Revs. Cecil Harvey and Hubert Austin officiating. Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple.

Burial followed at the Confederate Cemetery in Alvin under the direction of Froberg Funeral Home, Inc., of Alvin.

The rosary service was recited at 7:30 p.m. September 29, at the Froberg Funeral Home Chapel.

Brother Lubojacky died September 28, 1982, at his Alvin residence.

He was born January 30, 1894, in Yorktown before moving to Iowa Colony in 1929. Brother Lubojacky was a farmer and rancher.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Emillia Lubojacky of Alvin; four daughters and their husbands, Elsie and Emil Kadera of Angleton, Lillie and Louis Krampota of Iowa Colony, Libby and the late Henry Jez of Angleton and Edna Simmons of Houston; three sons and their wives, Raymond L. and Annie Lubojacky of Angleton, Edward J. and Ruby Lubojacky of Alvin, and August L. and Marion Lubojacky of Brazoria; a brother, Adolph, and his wife, Mary Lubojacky of Rosenberg; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous other relatives.

five years collecting Czech folk songs. One of his best known works is LASSKE TANCE (Dances From La§sko). Jandeek said about folk music: "Folk songs! From my youth I have lived in them. In folk songs you find the complete, total man — body, soul, everything. Whoever grows up with folk songs grows up to be a total human being."

Possibly Jandeek's greatest work is his MSA GLAGOLSKAJA (Glagolitic Mass) composed in 1926, two years before his death. MSA GLAGOLSKAJA is based on an ancient text from the Slavic Glagolitic language. This is similar to the form of worship which Sts. Cyril and Methodius introduced in Moravia in the 9th century. In this work Janakek again demonstrated his great love for his brother Sla ys. MSA GLAGOLSKAJA is a powerful, dramatic musical composition.

Leos Jandeek has of late become the favorite of many music critics in America. It is now possible to hear his operas and other works performed. While just a few years ago he was something of an unknown in America, Leos Jandeek is now beginning to achieve some of the recognition which his musical genius merits.

Author's Note: Texans of CzechMoravian descent should take a special interest in Leos Jan gkek and his music. Most Moravian immigrants in Texas came from Janakek's native region of La§sko.

Certain Texans can even trace their ancestors to Janatek's birthplace, the village of Hukvaldy.

Veteran's Day November 11th marks the date of Veteran's Day and you will find Arlington National Cemetery one of the largest and most famous national cemeteries in the United States. It covers about 420 acres of land in Arlington, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The cemetery surrounds the Custis-Lee Mansion, which was the home of General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate Army. It occupies land that was once a part of Lee's estate. The cemetery carries on the historic name, Arlington, by which the Lee property was known. The United States Government made Arlington a national cemetery in 1864. The Department of the Army administers the cemetery.

Federal laws determine the categories of persons who may be buried in Arlington and in other national cemeteries where space is available. These persons include members or former members of the United States armed services whose last active service ended honorably, their wives or husbands, and their minor children.

The Tomb of the Unknowns of World Wars I and II and other wars is located in Arlington. Wreaths are placed at this tomb on national holidays and during visits of dignitaries from other countries.

Commemorative services are often held nearby, at the Arlington National Cemetery. Presidents Kennedy and William H. Taft are the only United States presidents buried in Arlington.

Rovnet tak jeho navrhem nosili Sokoli od jara 1862 jako svilj odznak kovove S na eervene hedvabne kokarde. Odchodem Karla Vacka ztracf eeskoslovenska, kultura jednu z nejvyznamnej§fch a nejpopularnej§fch postav eeskoslovenskeho soueasneho hudebriho umeni.

Karel Vacek se narodil 21. btezna 1902 v Liberci. Prosttedf, v nemi vyrilstal, v nem zahy vypestovalo lasku k hudbe a brzy ovladl hru na nekolik nastrojil Hudebnf §kolou se mu staid vojenska hudba. Zpfval a hral se souborem R. A. Dvorskeho a piisobil jako trumpetista pod taktovkou Jaroslava Jetka v Osvobozenem divadle. V roce 1935 sestavil vlastnf orchestr, s nfmt pak po mnoho let §ftil doma i v zahranief slavu eeske lidove hudby. V take dobe nacisticke okupace posilovala jeho hudba narodnf sebevedomf §irokych vrstev na;kho lidu. Po osvobozenf na g vlasti Sovetskou armadou dal vkchny sve sfly do sluieb rozvoje socialistickeho hudebnfho umenf.

Zivot Karla Vacka byl napinen tvilref pracf. Vytvotil na 100 skladeb a ptiblitne 60 pfsnieek, z nicht and jedna neupadla v zapomnenf, mnohe z nick zlidovely a zfskaly statiske vdeenyrch obdivovatelti, kteff si Karla Vacka natrvalo zamilovali.
