Mrs. Antonie L. Bohuslav of El Campo, Texas has donated, to our museum, her husband's collection of wood carvings. This collection consists of some 183 pieces of wood carvings from an ordinary hand shovel to a replica of a cotton gin; it's a fantastic collection that you must see. This was carved by her husband Frank J. Bohuslav, an El Campo druggist, from 1941 to 1958.

He died in 1958. The coach in the picture is an exact replica of General Sam Houston's personal stagecoach and when you pull the lever forward it really locks the wheel brakes. To the lower left is a planter (riding) that also works by pushing the lever up and down.

TEN MISTAKES OF LIFE To set up your own standard of right and wrong and expect everybody to conform to it.

To try to measure the enjoyment of others by our own.

To expect uniformity of opinion in this world.

To look for judgment and experience in youth.

To endeavor to mold all dispositions alike.

Not to yield to unimportant trifles.

To look for perfection in our own actions.

To worry ourselves and others about what cannot be remedied.

To believe only what our finite minds can grasp.

To live as if the moment, the time, the day were so important that it would live forever.

Dedication and Grand Opening of New Home of Lodge 172, Pasadena 3609 Preston Road November 7th

Everyone likes to think that time is measured in many, ways — the geologist measures time in the millions of years; the farmer measures time from sun to sun and from season to season; the historian measures time by events; the astronomer measures time by the stars. To each of us, time is allotted in the same amount. To each of us in given 24 hours in each day, 60 minutes in each hour, and 60 seconds in each minute. The difference lies in the way we utilize that day, that hour, that minute.

History is repleted with striking examples of men who have taken the best advantage of the moment, the hour, and the day. These men took time to do that which was right.

Likewise, today, all of us have many opportunities to take advantage of time. We are a great people, a great democracy; our democracy is something we feel, love, and fight for, but often we seem unable to find the words and the time to explain it to others. In talking about it, we constantly use certain words and phrases such as liberty, freedom, equality, pursuit of happiness, and the like, and yet, we experience difficulty in explaining to the other fellow exactly what democracy means.

There are good reasons for this; democracy is a living, changing, growing organism. It is something within our grasp and yet always a little beyond our finger tips. Because of this, even those who are responsible for making the laws of our state should set aside a period of time within which they should take time for a closer look at democracy and the responsibilities of our American citizenship.

Freedom, our most cherished asset, is aided by our democracy. However, we cannot say what freedom is,

perhaps, in a single sentence. It is not really necessary that we define it; it is only necessary that we realize that it is made of simple things and that simple things make it worth having.

Rather than define freedom, let us point to it.

Freedom is a man lifting a gate latch at dusk and sitting for a while on the porch, smoking his pipe, before he goes to bed. It is the violence of an argument outside an election poll; it is viewing with alarm and pointing with pride. It is the warm laughter of children at play. It is the rush of a train across the continent and the unafraid faces of people looking out the windows. It is all the "howdies" in the world and all of the "hellos." It is trying to remember the words to the "Star Spangled Banner." It is the absence of fear at the sound of approaching footsteps outside your closed door. It is all the things you do and want to keep on doing. It is also all the things you feel and want to feel. FREEDOM—it is you and yours!

Brothers and Sisters: Freedom and our democracy rest squarely upon these words from the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." All of our ideals of government are expressed in the 52 words that constitute the Preamble of the Constitution: "We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

The purpose of law is to give equal opportunity to all citizens. The world is filled with people, today, who believe that life can be made secure and protected against the forces that jeopardize well-being and happiness, from the cradle to the grave, by governmental edict. They talk in terms of social security, health security, happiness security, and security from want and fear, but history will repeat its lesson — there is no way of making life secure. The only thing that government can guarantee is equal opportunity for all.

The only security worth having is the security within oneself that comes from one's loyalty to the best they know. There will never be money enough, health enough, brains enough, happiness enough to make it possible for all to have an equal amount. No person and no government can guarantee security to any of us. Never, in the history of the world, has security for any individual been attained by a governmental formula.

Real security is achieved through work, thrift, and sacrifice. Whenever people have accepted the false promise of security to be provided by the Government, they have gone down in destruction.

The fighting spirit of our decent citizenship must be aroused to drive out the grafters. Nothing in a government of law is more important than the moral standards by which we live.

In the clash between right and wrong, there is no middle ground. There can be no compromise. If America is to maintain its proud place in the world, morality must always guide us in business, industry, labor, politics and in the domestic affairs of our Government.

Wednesday, October 27, 1982-YE STNIK/3 eighty members attending was $1,900. Camp had been held in Bastrop with a good group in attendance. The cost of the camp was $3,320 which exceeded the $2,645.38 which had been allocated to District VI. The difference of $675.00 was later reimbursed by the state after pro-rating from the state fund. The District YAD had been held in 111111111111111111111111111111111111,11â– 1111111111111 Taiton in July. At the State YAD, Taiton placed first in talent and several members from Lodge No. 50 won individual honors. Expenses for the YAD were $1,117.58. The year's youth activities would conclude October 23, 1982 with a skating party at Silver Wings in El Campo.

Youth Counselor Marek did not have an assistant but did have volunteers to help.

Anthony Kellner asked Youth Counselor Marek how many "attended camp this year. She replied that with chaperones and cooks, there were fifty-four in attendance. Most of the expenses at camp were for mileage and cooks.

This was followed by the program. Lodge 32, Victoria presented a "Halloween" skit, Lodge 40, Hillje had a "Making a Mickey L. Jones Movie" skit and a song, and Lodge Mickey L. Jones has recently been 50, El Campo had a "John and appointed as a Sales Representative Marsha" skit.

-SPJSTIn District VI Treasurer Anton Kellner's report, he stated that the balance April 1st was $1,548.54, income was $2,491.65, totaling $4,040.19 cash on hand. The expenses were $3,217.59, leaving a balance October 1st of $822.60. In the General Expense Fund there was a balance of $295.54 April 1st.

We received a check for $400 from the Supreme Lodge which gave us $695.54 cash on hand. Expenses totaled $150, leaving a balance District October 1st of $545.54.

VI Fall Meeting Minutes (Uncorrected) October 10, 1982

Supreme Lodge would meet at the County Courthouse in La Grange, October 12th at 9:00 a.m. Many lodges in District VI were in the original group of lodges formed 85 years ago so a special invitation was being sent to lodges in Lavaca and Fayette counties. Director Vanek then asked all sales representatives present to rise and fifteen responded. In April, at the last district meeting, Lodge No. 16, Bila Hora, had no sales representative.

Oscar Dusek was trained to be a sales representative and, since that time, has signed sixteen new members for $62,000. Sales classes had been held in El Campo and Hallettsville July 26th and 27th with a dinner being served to the sales representatives and their spouse; $988,500 worth of insurance had been sold thus far in 1982 in District VI. Director Vanek then asked former Youth Counselor Elsie Brdecka to rise. El Campo and Hillje were working on a merger. There was money still available for loans at 141/2 percent interest. $166,621.08 had been refunded to the lodges and $246,176.79 were premiums paid out to individuals. Director Vanek then proceeded to clear up the issue on the Publication Committee. On August 10th, 1982 Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska wrote a letter to Chairman Mazanec outlining the ByLaws pertaining to the Publication Committee. Article 103(g) says: "that any questionable material brought to the Publication Committee should be handled by mail."

Article 115 says: "all the By-Laws should be followed by the committees that are governed by them:" Since there~were no letters to discuss and the By-Laws state that any questionable material should be handled by mail, there was no need for the September 25th meeting.

Editor Sefcik then repeated that he was told the Publication Committee would meet even if they were receiving no pay to discuss the one letter, etc.

Rest Home Director Erwin Holy said the nursing homes were in good shape. The homes have the same administrators. They are both full with a waiting list. Internal Revenue had just audited the books. Brother Holy said that he would be going with Chairman Leshikar to Austin to see the Welfare Department about the new addition to the Needville home.

Editor Sefcik asked if the Texas Health Board checks the rest homes often. Brother Holy said that the homes get a high recommendation every time they are inspected.

Maxine Sefcik asked for a clarification on the addition to the Needville home. Brother Holy said there must be a need in the community for an addition before the State will approve it The SPJST had the only rest home in Needville but there are many in the surrounding area.

Sophie Dybala, Publication Committee, said that she had nothing further to add.

Adolph Motal, the only member of the Auditing Committee present, said that the books would have to be audited later.

The spring meeting would be hosted by Victoria, Inez and La Salle.

Eddie Vrana, Leona Macha and Erwin Holy were appointed to the Nominating Committee.

The oldest members present were

Agnes Chudej (83 years) from Lodge 63, Sweet Home and Frank Wagner (77 years) from Lodge 184, Moulton.

The drawings were held by the youth clubs.

Erwin Holy made a motion to adjourn, with a second from Jo Ann Fuchik.

The meeting was adjourned.

Lodge Is Having Fall Festival Elgin

The regular meeting of 'Lodge No. 18 was called to order by President Roy Simank and Brother Morris Bontinele led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call and minutes by Secretary Jeanette Peterson were read. Several officers were absent.

Committee reports were also given and accepted. Howard Kuehn gave a report on the Board meeting of last Tuesday.

A motion was made and accepted to let Home Chairperson Irene Helgren use lodge funds to add to Christmas decorations for the tables.

Sister Albina Mogonye again had some can refund money for the lodge.

Pat Young, youth leader, reported that 28 of our youth attended the District II Skating Party at Temple last Sunday. She also recognized Paul Lundgren for donating a mimeograph machine to the youth group.

The Nominating Committee is composed of Jim Mogonye, Leslie Gustafson and Curtis' Young.

November is election of officers so members try to attend your meeting.

Sorry to hear Curtis Young has been on the sick list for the past couple of weeks.

The Fall Festival is Saturday, October 30th with a chili supper being served at 6:30 p.m., there will also be a cake walk and country store; and a dance with music by Jess DeMaine at 9 p.m.

Voting on the proposed amendment to our Rules and Regulations: all but one were passed.

We added two new members to our lodge, they are Edward Gene Franz and Wendy Nicole Franz.

The door prize was won by Morris Bontinele.

I hope to see all of you at our Fall Festival, October 30th; and at our next lodge meeting, November 16th.

From Victoria Lodge Nasinec No. 32 News

At a recent meeting of Lodge No. 32 plans were started for the lodge's Christmas dinner to be held December 5 at the Community Center.

Four new members were accepted by the lodge, they were: Doris Elsik, Renett Holcomb, Dennis Raska and Marjorie Matula.

The yearly Czech Festival will be held July 10, 1983 at the Community Center. Plans will be discussed at later dates. The cost of land on which to build a lodge were also discussed.

At the present time no decision has been made.

4NES'rNfK-Wednesday, October 27, 1982 At the meeting the youth had a poster contest which was won by Beverly Horelka. The adult attendance prize was won by Vlasta Svoboda and youth's by Pam Donalson.

The youth of the lodge have been quite busy lately. On the 2nd of October they went to Astroworld.

October 10th they went to the District meeting where they put on a Halloween skit for the adults. They also had a grab bag booth. October 23rd will,find them at El. Campo at a skating party and October 30th they will have a Halloween costume party at the City Park.

The lodge as a whole would be most happy if more of, its young people would attend these meetings and share in the learning experience and the good times that the participating members enjoy.

The next regular meeting will be Wednesday, November 3 at the Citizens National Bank at 8 p.m. The youth club meeting starts at 7:30 p.m.

We want to extend our best wishes to Pasadena Lodge No. 172 on the completion and opening of their beautiful new lodge hall.

Lodge And Its YC Makes Charity Contributions

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 66 held their meeting Sunday, October 17, 1982.

President Daniel Nors conducted the meeting. There was a very good attendance.

The flags were presented by Sister Mary Alice Langlatz and Sister Kay Owens. (The regular flag bearers were dressing for the costume party.) Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge 66 Motto. Afterwards, the members held a period of silence for our departed members, Brother Jimmy Hykel and Brother Joseph Janecka.

May they rest in eternal peace.

Visitors were Mrs. Gladys Yates of Waco and the Roland Webb children from Florida. (I failed to get their names; they did not register in time for us to get their names.) We welcome all of you and we hope you will visit again.

In roll call, all officers were present except Brother Otto Hanus, our Czech reporter.

The September minutes were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt, which stood approved as read.

Under correspondence, Sister Engelke read a thank-you letter from Sister Rudolph Cervenka for memorial donation for Brother Rudolph Cervenka to the DAV, also from the Wood family of a memorial made to the American Cancer Society for their son, Brandon Wood. We wish to express our thanks to Sister Mildred Hanak for the $10 donation in memory of Brother Joseph Janecka to be used for a charitable donation.

Brother Gaidusek had Sister Engelke to read the minutes of the Board of Trustees meeting held Wednesday night, October 6th.

For the Entertainment committee, Brother George Shilling was checking on decorations to

replace those on the brick wall. The 'Expressions of Sympathy for dance schedules for 1983 will be Brother Jimmy Hykel and Brother printed soon as the bookings are Joseph Janecka.

Sister Englke then said that a complete. The New Year's Eve dance tickets will be printed and go check for $10 was presented to her on sale soon. A motion was made and seconded to donate $50 to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville, designated to be used for recreation or entertainment.

Representatives from our lodge at the District V meeting were Brother and Sister Herbert Nowotny and Brother and Sister Charlie Matcek. They all gave favorable reports as to hospitality, and the great entertainment throughout the day. Brother Matcek reported on the business part of the meeting.

Our next meeting will be a day meeting Sunday, November 14 and will begin at 1 p.m. since this is election day. The group decided to have a luncheon together before the meeting beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Ham, sausage and bread will be furnished so, ladies, don't forget to bring the trimmings!

The monthly meeting last Monday night needed more members to attend. The day at the fair was too much for many, but we look for a better attendance in November; that's November 22nd at 7:30 p.m. and in December, it's December 13 at 7:30 p.m. Mark these dates, also mark December 19 for the Christmas Party and Program.

After reading the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved, Sister Salac reported on correspondence which included a thank-you card from the family of Brother James Campion.

Brother Ron Coker gave the entertainment report, followed by Youth Leader Bessie Petr report of the youth, which included a Skating Party, a Birthday Party for Assistant Leader Timpy Ondrusek, little dancers at the Christ the King Church, and practice for the dances that were seen at the Texas State Fair Band Shell. She also mentioned preparations for the Halloween Party and the Christmas Program.

Special Committee chairman reported a bake sale to be held November 20th at Rudolph's; plan to get your Thanksgiving baked goods on that day.

Wednesday, October 27, 1982-VESTNiK/5 The Czech Culture Society had no report except that all went well at the fair.

Brother Ben Jarma for the softball team thanked the membership for the use of the hall during the annual steak dinner.

Brother Petr gave the report on hall rentals.

New members to our lodge include Natasha Tye, granddaughter of Brother and Sister George Reznik, John Schaerdel, Willie Bogie and John Patrick Zastopil. We wish to welcome them.

Our Halloween Dance for October 30th should be fun. If you will dress Halloween-style, the admission at the door is half price: $2 per adult and $1 for 17 and under. You still have time to get a costume for the occasion; a prize will be given to the best selected. The Melody Masters will play for dancing.

It was mentioned in the meeting that, at our last dance, we had visitors from the Supreme Lodge; namely, VP Bernard Gebala and his wife and Brother and Sister Silas Smith. We were impressed.

Sunshine Lady Sister Prasifka sent get-well cards to Sister Mary Schroeder, Brother Frankie Parsifka, Brother Raymond Prachyl and Brother Emil Nekuza. A sympathy card to Brother Joe Vik on the death of his sister, Sister Trojacek. May she rest in peace.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Oct. 11, 1982 Meeting The meeting was called to order

by President Pflughaupt at 7:30 p.m.

Flag Bearer Lynn Pflughaupt presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which, the members stood in silence and tribute to deceased members James J. Corrigan, Christina L. Covington, Ben L. Malek and Laddie J. Matula.

The minutes and all financial reports were read and approved.

Chairman of the Board Royal Warnasch reported a donation was made to the United Way and a donation of $149.29 received from persons attending a Saturday night dance was made to the Muscular Dystrophy together with our previously reported donation.

District V President Sister Tillie Helmcamp reported on the District V meeting and the wonderful luncheon. She expressed her special thanks to all those who made this day beautiful. She announced the opening of the new lodge building of Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena November 7th, which seats 1,000 people and invited the membership to come out on this day and see their beautiful building.

Brother Souchek, Czech Instructor, reported that a Czech course, is being offered at the lodge and anyone wishing to attend should sign up with President Pflughaupt.

President Pflughaupt reminded everyone of Czech Day at the lodge October 24th. There will be no program, but continuous entertainment all day with a few

booths of different foods as is prevalent at any other festival.

Sister Louise Kadlecek reported distributing 43 premium refund checks.

Reporter on Benelovance, Mary Kosut reported 187 hours and $745 in expense as charity work for September and 1,935 hours as volunteer work done by members at the lodge in August.

Members reported sick were Frances Crossman, Bessie Matejek, Leddie Kadera and Ivan Case.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 129 members present. "Happy Birthday" was sung to members having birthdays and a list of anniversaries was read. Door prize winners were Brother John Vasula and Sisters Birdie Pech and Virginia Kunze with special Liberty Savings prize winner Sister Della Kadlecek.

Refreshment donors were Brother and Sister Johnny Kosut. Three tickets to Golden Year Council's Country Music Jamboree, donated by the Board, was won by Brother Amos Kadlecek.

Our next monthly meeting will be held Monday, November 8th, at 7:30 p.m.

The Saturday night, October 16th Russ Morgan dance was a success.

The attending committee was pleased and enjoyed working. The dance was hosted by Irma O'Conner in charge; her sister, Irene Slovacek (this time the two really looked like twins) wearing identical white gowns; both looked very nice.

Helping them were Mike and Kathy Treffel, they were celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary the very same day and didn't mind helping out at the dance. Occupying the ticket office were Amos Kadlecek and his spouse, Della, greeted the arriving guests. In the lobby Millie Manack and Martha Baxter were attending to the advance ticket sales for the Al Pierson dance for Friday, October 29th and Saturday, October 30th. All the ladies, as usual, were dressed according to the dress code.

All in all, it was a successful evening.

The following day, Sunday, October 17th, the famous Blue Room Party took place from 4 to 9 p.m.; you almost can call it a bargain day.

Everyone present was in a festive mood, enjoying the good music by the Knights of Dixie. The dinner was especially good and served buffetstyle with two kinds of meat: succulent pork ribs and baked chicken, parsley potatoes, green beans, carrots, rolls and butter, tea and coffee while cocktails were served all throughout the evening.

The Blue Room Committee deserves a generous THANK YOU! Three couples enjoyed a trip together driving to Sioux City, Iowa in the cozy van of Herman and Margereth Liebscher accompanied

by Royal Warnasch, our Board of Trustees chairman, and his lovely wife, Laura, John Hilsher also on the Board of Trustees as kitchen manager and his dear spouse, Palmae, leaving Houston Thursday

at 5 a.m. and arrived in Sioux City, Friday at mid-night. They joined Eddie Skeets and his band at the Octoberfest and, during their stay with them, enjoyed dog races in North Sioux City, Iowa, from there on to Branson, Missouri to Silver Dollar City and on to see the Passion Play in Eureka. The whole trip was a wonderful experience with pleasant memories.

Ed and Vlasta Zalmanek recently returned from an exciting pleasure and business trip to Japan in connection with the Association of Diesel Specialists September 24th and returned October 2nd. While there they enjoyed many exciting events; rode the Bullet Train, visited Shrines, Temples and ate with chopsticks the many delicacies served in Japan. The countrysides were beautiful and they were impressed by the hospitality and promptness of the people. They visited Azusu, Toyota, Diesel Kikki and Nippondenso factories. Ed and Vlasta were impressed by the service given to them in the hotel during their stay. Prior to leaving for Japan they attended Association's Convention held in Las Vegas.

I didn't find out of any lucky streak while they were there. Ed and Vlasta were very much enthused about their 9-day trip to Japan.

Agnes Pederson was saddened by the passing of her brother, Joe P. Kucera, age 74 years, who passed away October 11, 1982 at 7 o'clock.

He was laid to rest Wednesday, October 13th at 10 a.m. Services were held in the Catholic Church Lady Victoria at Victoria, Texas.

Surviving him are his wife, Albina Kucera; 3 sons, August Kucera of Victoria; Z. Kucera and Marvin Kucera of Corpus Christi; 2 daughters, Rosalie Strelic of Fredericksburg, Texas and Lillie Martinak of Victoria; 4 sisters, Agnes Pederson, Stella Bukoski, Marie Saunders and Rosalie Glaison and brother, Pete Kucera of Victoria, Texas; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. May he rest in peace.

A lovely wedding took place September 11, 1982 at 7 p.m. in the Colonial Baptist Church to unite two young people in holy matrimony; Rebecca Mendosa, daughter of Alex and Wilhelmina Mendoza to Dean R. Page, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Page of Swainsboro, Georgia. The lovely bride, in a traditional white bridal gown, came down the aisle on her father's arm to meet the waiting groom at the altar. The matron of honor was the bride's sister, Kathy Rodriquez, and the groom's brother, Danny Page served as best man.

Lovely and sweet Wendy S. Mendoza, granddaughter of Alex and Wilhelmina Mendoza, was showering the church aisle with rose petals. The reception was held at SPJST Lodge No. 88 in the beautiful Red Room with the groom's mother, Mrs. Ray Page, present including family and many friends enjoying the refreshments and the wedding cake. Wishing the couple a longlasting happiness in the future.

Last Thursday night, at the social (I call it the Della Kadlecek's table), was again, a full table of special delicacies which appeared on their table in intermission-time to celebrate the birthday of a steady Thursday night guest, Lillie Kahanek, and the wedding

anniversary of Johnnie and Mary Kosut, their 36th. Congratulations to all! If you want something good and delicious just come by Della's table on Thursday night and there sure enough will be someone celebrating something. I think that is great and keep it up.

Jerry and Bessie Kolacny took off in their comfortable van and headed for Durango, Colorado. On their way they met with friends from Houston also on their vacation, none other than Johnnie and Judy Sindel and little later met up with another couple, Bill and Norma Petrzelka also vacationing. After en enjoyable social session each couple went on their way to view the gorgeous sight and breath-taking wonders of nature; they spent several days there and on to Utah from there they headed for home. Both Jerry and Bessie are great fishermen but fishing was no good on the way at all, they are saving their time to do their fishing here in Texas with nice and warm weather; up to now they had enough of COLD weather.

November 7th Meeting For Lodge 107, Floresville Lodge 107 held its regular meeting Sunday, October 18, 1982 at 4:30 p.m.

President Bayer opened the meeting and the Pledge was led by Raymond Meyer.

Annie Merecka and Emil Merecka were reported on the sick list. The entire lodge wishes them a speedy recovery.

Reports from the treasurer, financial secretary and the secretary were read and approved as read.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer reported on youth activities. The peanuts were packaged and the youth clubbers were to report Monday, October 4th at 5:30 p.m. to help with the peanut brittle. She also gave other reports and on the bank balance for the youth club. She reminded all to come help in the booth at the Peanut Festival.

President Bayer reported on the General Fund and gave the hall rental dates: Square dancers on Thursday, October 21st, RVOS annual meeting, October 17th, and the R. D. Pundt anniversary, October 23rd.

He read the schedule for workers at the Peanut Festival. The Fire Department plans to use the proceeds from the booth to purchase a new fire truck. This truck is to be used for outof-town fires. We commend the Fire Department for their concern for outof-town properties.

Refreshments were served after the meeting. The door prize was won

by Elizabeth Bielefeld.

November Meeting & Thanksgiving Dinner Set For Lodge 133 San Antonio The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 133 was held October 17th.

Our meeting was opened with the membership reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers indicated that all were present.

Minutes were read by Brother D. Netek and were accepted as read.

The treasurer's report by Sister Viola Mazac was read and accepted.

Sister Viola Mazac has been our treasurer for the past 20 years, and she is to be commended for the fine reports that are given:- her records are always up-to-date and the Auditing Committee always finds her books in tip-top shape. Her dedication to our lodge and her work is unprecedented. We are proud and fortunate to have someone like her.

Reports by the Social Committee and the Entertainment Committee were given and their reports were very good.

We want to congratulate all our chairmen of all the committees for the fine work they have done the past year; sometimes, we have a tendency to forget how much work they have to do and their responsibilities. We are proud of all the committees!

Members voted to have a Thanksgiving turkey dinner which will be served at 12:30 p.m. and, at 2 p.m., we will have a short meeting. We will have two couples who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversaries: namely, Brother James and Mary Kostelnik and Brother August and Marie Blanar. Our last meeting began with a sad note as we observed a moment of silence in memory of our Brothers Benjamin Piwonka and Joe Dulak.

Prior to the loss of these two members, we mourned the passing of Sister Bertha Machu and shortly after, Gregory Nichols and his brother, Ronnie, both involved in an unfortunate accident which touched the entire Heji family. Our deep sympathy was expressed to Mildred Dale Jezisek on the death of Jerry, her good husband and father of three children, all SPJST members.

While the loss is keenly felt, we have new-comers to fill the ranks.

We welcome new members Barclay H. Russell, Jr., John Allen Hall, and a bright new arrival, Michael J. Johnson, son of Linda and Leonard Johnson. Great-grandmother Rosalie Urban, member of Dallas Circle of Czech Women, took a plane immediately to check on the youngster as soon as he was born.

We are glad to have with us Bro. Brian Mikeska, who transferred to our lodge. Mrs. Mikeska and their child are also making application to join. Mrs. Helen Dulak expressed her desire to join after a return from a trip. She also expressed her thanks to our lodge for taking care of funeral arrangements for her husband.

A happy grandfather, T'Odon Leshikar, announced the birth of David Edw. Leshikar, son of Ivan Lyn Leshikar, and his application for membership is already on file. This makes the Leshikar name in Austin 100 percent SPJST. We congratulate Bro. Ted Marek on his attainment of CPA status and his appointment as VicePresident for Finance and Management at Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos.

Certainly a notable achievement.

Bro. Marek, before moving his family to San Marcos, served briefly as president of our lodge and represented us as a delegate to one of our conventions. He enrolled his son-in-law, John Allen Hall, as a member of our Lodge No. 155.

An ever-busy member of our lodge is Bro. Frank Janak, who is involved with his investments and manages to bring in new members once in a while. He has announced the approaching marriage of his daughter, Mary Catherine. He cannot give particulars as yet, he says. Mary graduated from A &M and is employed in Houston. Mark Allen, his son, also completed his

In a special feature in the Austin American of 9/14/82, the writer, Larry Besaw, describes a famous hat maker who sold hats to famous people such as Ronald Reagan, Nelson Rockefeller, Willie Nelson, Bill Clements, and many others.

Along with this, he mentions his orange and white 1963 Cadillac limousine, which he drives on Austin streets with people staring, seeing Longhorns on the hood and back, and playing "The Eyes of Texas." It has orange spark plugs to give Orange Power and the interior is plush with TV, ice chest, stero and sliding glass door between driver and passenger for privacy when listening to the Longhorns play. It was bought for $350, restored for $2,000 after a lot of sweat and elbow

grease, he states. He delights in being a loyal UT fanatic. Believe it or not, he is our own Marvin E. Gammage (Manny), member SPJST Lodge No. 155.

Our next meeting will include preparation for some Christmas event. A very good friend once said he was told there was no SPJST lodge in Austin. We proved it otherwise with historical facts and other data and he joined us. It will be our purpose to punctuate the columns of the Vestnik with news to keep our lodge in full view.

Galveston Plans December 8th Meeting

Academy Lodge

Lodge 173 of Galveston held a meeting Thursday, October 14, 1982 at 407 Ling at Bayou Vista.

Preceding the meeting a covered dish meal was enjoyed by members present. We had barbecue with a lot of side dishes to make it a very delicious meal.

Brother Louis Hanus visited us during our meeting and he was in time to enjoy the meal with us.

President Alvin Sefcik asked members to try to be at Pasadena Lodge 172, November 7th to help celebrate the opening of their new hall and home building.

Due to a lot of conflicting activities in November, we will not have a meeting. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, December 8th at 7 p.m. It will be election of officers.

Dear Members and Guests: At 11 a.m. Sunday, October 10th, members boarded a chartered Kerrville bus at Warrenton Store to attend the Texas Prison Rodeo in Huntsville.

Forty-eight people enjoyed the events and dinner at Junction Cafe immediately following the rodeo performance. The bus safely returned to Warrenton at 7:30 p.m, everyone having had an extremely eventful day.

Lodge No 179 Warrenton was thankful for the invitation to sit-in on the Supreme Lodge deliberation held Tuesday, October 12th at 9 a.m., in District Court Room at La Grange to commemorate the historic occasion of the 85th year of the founding of the -SPJSTSlavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST).

Sunday, November 14 is the regular lodge meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the lodge hall. All of you members be thinking about who you want for your officers for the coming year; elections will be in December and the ones who get elected will be in charge of your lodge for one year. If any of you would like to serve as officers, come to the next two meetings or if you know of someone who would be an officer, ask him to come to the meeting. As I've said once there are three kinds of people in every organization: those who make things happen; those who sit around and watch things happen; and those who wonder WHAT HAPPENED! Don't be one of the last ones. As it was stated in an earlier newsletter, Phill Boyle has announced that he is running for president for the next year and so far he is the only one who is running for that office.

Remember the joint Christmas Party for the four lodges: 92, 154, 180 and 183 to be held Sunday, December 5th at Lodge 92 in the National Hall at Fort Worth, located on 3316 Roberts Cut-off Road. Turkey, dinner will be

Dance Scheduled At Centerville Lodge Benefit

The Deerest Lodge No. 188, at Centerville held the regular monthly meeting Monday night, October 18, 1982, beginning promptly at 7:30 p.m.

President Dr. A. M. Easterling, Jr. directed the meeting.

The secretary and treasurer were both absent. Bar Chairman was also absent.

Door Chairman Chili Hines was present and gave his report.

Members voted to permit a benefit dance for Dewayne and LeKeitha Ball for November 18, 1982 to help them with their high hospital bills from the birth of their twin sons, in a Houston hospital.

A Nominating Committee was appointed, to report at the November meeting. Members appointed were: Curtis Beard, Mary Weaver, Cavit Boyd, Travis Oden and Dr. Easterling.

Installation of officers and the yearly Christmas Party will be held at the regular monthly meeting date December 20th. Santa will make a visit to see the children, at that time.

Sister Rosalee Kostom read the minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

The treasurer's report was given

by Sister Mary Tilich for Sister Lillie Spies who was on vacation. The report was approved as read.

Sister Mary Kosut, sunshine reporter, gave her report. She sent get-well cards to Sisters: Annie Baethe, Birdie Pech, Lydia Kadera and Agnes Pederson. Birthday cards were sent to Sisters Frances Olexa, Mildred Holeman, Doris Knapick and Mary Kosut.

It was good to see Sister Birdie Pech back at the meeting. Sister Lydia Kadera is still in the hospital and Sister Linda Bricker is still at the nursing home. We hope both of these sisters a speedy recovery. Sister Annie Baethe is back at home and, hopefully, she will be able to come back to the meetings soon.

Sister Mary Kosut donated the meat for the Wednesday, October 6th luncheon and Sister Mary Johnson donated the pickles for the October 13th luncheon. Thanks to both of these sisters.

Hostesses for October included Sisters Betty Kulhanek, Bessie Dewer, Edith McClellan and Edna Froelich, who helped in place of Lillian Beeson.

The meeting was adjourned by singing "Happy Birthday" to celebrants Sisters Frances Olexa, Doris Knapick and Mary Kosut. We wish you sisters many more happy birthdays.

Saturday, October 9th, Frank and Jo Prochaska celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary at SPJST Lodge No. 183 with their children and families, plus a host of friends. It was a most enjoyable evening, and we wish them many more anniversaries.

Marie Prill has taken a three-week trip to visit relatives in Germany. We know her stay will be delightful.

Donald and Rose Steinman returned from a three-week trip to Illinois, Indiana and Ohio after visiting friends and relatives. They even dropped in to see my daughterin-law and grandsons in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

Eight of our members helped in some capacity to make the 42nd American-Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas October 17th a huge success.

Mrs. Antonie Novak of Ennis, Texas, age 87 years, was Czech Queen of the day. She was presented a lovely trophy for being the oldest lady present.

The Czech King of the day was Mr. Frank Mach of Dallas. He is 84 years of age, and he, too, was presented a trophy.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mach of Dallas had the honor of being the longestmarried couple, 56 years. They, too, were presented a trophy.

The 42nd American-Czech Day could not have been a success without many guests and diligent workers who assisted in the program preparation in so many ways.

We do hope that the Ft. Worth Azle, Texas boys enjoyed the largest kolach ever baked in Texas.

We may see where many things were neglected to bring our people nearer to other nationalities; certainly there was a main reason -the language, but in a few years the schools made a great change: "Melting Pot." The citizenship demands official English language, but, beside this, their mother language can be to their advantage, it would be welcome to hear also the Czech-Moravian language from the assembly or speakers also.

After the meeting, the Czech Heritage Society Singers, maybe, are the next on the program. The social covered dish supper will be served from 6 to 10 p.m. Majek's Orchestra will play for the dance and the public is cordially invited.

The Moravian barkeepers always have a full supply of cold drinks.

The four months of dry and hot weather from May to October was broken as we received an inch of rain October 7th and October 10th.

In some places it received more or less. We all enjoyed seeing everything green again.

I'm wishing everybody good health and happiness in this unstable world.

It was a pleasure to have Brother Frank and Sister Caroline Veselka, in this meeting; they missed the September meeting because they were hospitalized in Amarillo, Texas while they were on a vacation trip to Arizona, a car accident put them in the hospital, there.

Sokol Corpus Christi Meeting The regular meeting was held Wednesday, October 13 at 8 p.m.

President Gene Lehnert called the meeting to order and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag.

All officers were reported present.

Sister Helen Pavelka read the minutes of our September meeting; they were approved as read. The other officers' and committees' reports were likewise approved.

We admitted three new members (two sisters and one brother). We hope they will be active members.

We need more volunteer workers.

The hall is busy and booked in advance for many months ahead.

"Bingo" is good income and it takes many members to give the needed service, so all volunteer assistants will be greatly appreciated; we appreciate the nice cooperation.

It is planned to have a Christmas Party; the date will be announced later. There will be no Sokol meeting in December.

We had .2 inches of rain October 7th and 10th; one inch at each time at my home place.

The book was translated into Czech. In the libraries there is much more what she had written about the frontier people.

LODGE 39 BRYAN TO HOST HALLOWEEN MASQUERADE PARTY Dear Readers, Our Lodge 39 Youth Club met Sunday, October 12 for their regular meeting, after which the youth made Christmas ornaments to sell at their booth for the Charity Bazaar in the Post Oak Mall, College Station held October 23rd.

Our Halloween Masquerade Party will be October 31st, Sunday, from 3 to 6 p.m. at our lodge home on Hwy. 21 West. We have worked very hard to make this event enjoyable for all ages. There will be games of all sorts, a fortune teller, a spookhouse, and also prizes for the best costumes. We have invited all the youth clubs in District I and we are hoping for a good turnout so come and enjoy yourselves for the afternoon.

The next youth meeting will be Sunday, November 14 immediately following the adult meeting at 2:30 p.m. We invite any interested youth of Lodge 39 to come out and join us and see what our club has to offer you!

Svitaks Vacation In Europe Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Svitak, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Svitak, Jr., Howells, and the senior Svitaks' daughter, Mrs. Leroy Ulrich, West Point, vacationed from Aug. 1 to 16 in Europe.

They flew to Prague, Czechoslovakia, to visit with the senior Mrs. Svitak's family and other relatives.

The vacationers stayed at a Prague hotel for five days. Mrs. Svitak's brother, Joseph Borsky and wife, and their daughter, Mrs. Helena Paskalevova and children, Elonka and Martin, took them on many sightseeing trips. Mr. Borsky, a printing company employee, took a week of vacation to spend with the relatives.

Visited were many large Catholic churches built in the 12th and 13th centuries, all preserved and beautifully refurbished by the government, especially for the tourists who come by bus loads from Germany, France, Russia, Yugoslavia and other countries. One church has the original statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague, embellished with emeralds, gold and diamonds. The statue's elegant costumes are changed on a monthly basis, signifying special feast days.

St. Vitus Cathedral is the largest edifice built in the 1200's.

Masses, identical to those here in the states but in the Czech language, are generally attended by the elderly.

Stage plays are all in the Czech dialect. The visitors also saw numerous castles and office buildings of the government.

At the conclusion of the stay in Prague, Mrs. Svitak's nephew and family, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Borsky, Michael and Monica, came for the visitors from the town of Upice, about 100 miles northeast of Prague.

Four days were spent at the Paul Borksys. Paul and wife, Hannah, were also on vacation from their jobs, his in the textile industry and she from a factory. Their planned sightseeing included touring the countryside and at Krokonice, going by chair lift 5 miles up to the highest mountain peak to view both Poland and Czechoslovakia.

The relatives also visited with Mrs. Svitak's oldest brother, Leo Borsky and wife in the town of Libcanny, and a niece, Mrs. Lada Kosova and children, Lada Jr. and Ellen in Hradec Karlovi, the county seat. Lada Kosova, a construction engineer, was away at the time working on the building of a sugar beet factory in Africa.

The vacationers then returned to the home of Joe Borsky, joined there by cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Vala, who came from the town of Cimalice, 80 miles southwest of Prague.

The remainder of the time was spent touring Mrs. Svitak's native town of Mirotice, seeing the church where she was baptized and married, and renewing friendships with former school mates.

at Pilzen, the town famous for beer of that name which is sold all over the world, including Nebraska.

Karlovi Vari, a mineral springs resort, was also visited. Twelve underground mineral springs feed water to the surface at a temperature range of 90 to 142 degrees Fahrenheit. Persons come there for health reasons.

State owned corporate farms were visited with modern cattle, hog and chicken confinement units. Mr. Vala managed one of the confinement units caring for 13,000 hogs.

There are as many as 400 dairy cows and 240,000 laying hens in the confined areas.

Crops include potatoes, barley, rye, sugar beets, corn for silage, alfalfa, sunflowers, mustard and other small grains. There are no fast food franchises as in the U.S. but small lunch street stands sell sandwiches made of sausage and bread. Potato chips are unknown there.

Czechoslovakia is known for its areas of flowers — gladioli, roses and straw flowers. Vegetable gardens are also tended and each home usually has an apple tree.

Those, and other fruit trees such as plums, line the highways on either side.

Upon reaching New York City on the return trip, two nights and a day were spent by both the Svitak couples while Mrs. Ulrich's husband met her there and they remained for a longer stay.

An 81/2 hour bus tour included visits to the Statue of Liberty, Chinatown, World Trade Center, the Cathedral of St. John Divine, George Washington Bridge, Fifth Avenue, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, the Bowery and Central Park.

Evening tours were made to the Playboy Club and the Hawaiian Kaii. ***

C.S.A. President Retires Frank J. Vodrazka, a resident of Berwyn, Illinois retired as of October 1, 1982 to enjoy his family.

He has been President of the Czechoslovak Society of America since 1955 after serving a 17 year vice-presidency with the Fraternal Life Insurance Organization.

He received his elementary and high school education in the Chicago School System, attending the Robert Burns Grammar School and Carter H. Harrison High School. To further his education, he attended evening classes at Northwestern University where he studied Business Management and Industrial Engineering. Later taking a course at Purdue University in Insurance Marketing and special courses at Triton College.

During his tenure of office, he served as president of the Illinois Fraternal Congress and in the National Fraternal Congress of America, as president in the Presidents Section, State Congresses Section. Was co-founder and president of the Fraternal Association which later became the Fraternal Section., He also served as a member of the Executive Committee during 1973-74. In 1981 was appointed to serve on the Family Life Committee of the Congress where he served for two years.

Vodrazka, himself has taken part in many community projects. He was delegated in 1933 to the Jan Neruda Czech School where his efforts helped the school progress.

In 1955, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the American Sokol Organization and was later elected treasurer and held that post for twelve years. He also served on the committee to obtain the printing of a postage stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the American Sokol Organization.

After serving for many years as a member of the Board of Directors, in 1965 he was elected president of the Bohemian Home For The Aged. In between his hectic schedule, he found time to serve as president of the Czech and Slovak Organizations of Metropolitan Chicago.

In 1975, he was appointed and served as regional director and member of the Advisory Committee of the Bicentennial Ethnic Racial Council — an adjunct of the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration based in Washington, D.C. where he served to July 4, 1976.

Among his other achievements, he initiated the Adult Czech Language courses sponsored by the society and takes pride in the fact that he is the founder of The Czech Heritage Museum, Library and Archives housed in the new C.S.A. Building which was built at its Harlem Avenue site in 1973-74.

He is a member of the C.S.A. Dramatic Club, Lyra-C.S.A. Mens Chorus, C.S.A. Degree Staff, Sokol Tabor of the A.S.O. Czech Beseda Club, Lodge Fort Worth of The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas and Lodge Bohemia No. 202 IOOF. As President of the Czechoslovak American Congress, Vodrazka spearheaded a drive to raise $33,000 for the purpose of relocating the Karel Havlicek Statue from its present site in Douglas Park on the west side of Chicago to Grant Park on the isthmus near the Adler Planetarium.

(Mr. Vodrazka is a member of the SPJST — Editor) THE BIRTH OF THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The National School Week Public School children first recited the pledge as they saluted the flag during the national School celebration in 1892. President Benjamin Harrison at that time called for patriotic exercises in schools to mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America.

Born in 1855 and died in 1931, Francis Bellamy of Boston was an associate editor of the Youth's Companion who composed the pledge.

It was during the National Flag Conference of the American Legion who expanded the original wording in 1923-24. Then in 1942 Congress made the pledge a part of its code for the use of the flag. In 1954 the words "under God" were added to the pledge.

Accent On The Bureau of Vital Statistics of the Texas Department of Health (TDH) reports 284 persons died in home fires last year in Texas. Seventy-six deaths occurred in persons 19 years of age or yoj nger — while 46 persons died in the one through four-year-old category. Fires also killed 94 persons age 55 and over.

The insured property loss last year from all fires in Texas was estimated at $320 million, according to the State Insurance Board.

There are some basic safety measures that can protect your family from becoming a fire statistic, according to the TDH. With winter approaching, homeowners should inspect their chimneys for cracks which could allow embers or carbon monoxide to escape.

It's wise to clean your chimney annually to avoid chimney fires, especially if you burn wood or coal. Make sure the flues are strong and tight, and every fireplace should have a noncombustible hearth and a good spark screen.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, a chimney should be at least three feet above the roof peak and two feet above any portion of the building within 10 feet.

Don't forget the central heating unit. The pilot should burn with a clean, blue flame, and the vents should be unobstructed. In addition, check your electric system. Electrical cords should never run near heaters, through doorways, or under carpets, where foot traffic can cause extreme wear. Tacking cords to the wall is another potential source of trouble.

Never use or store gasoline or other flammable liquids near a water heater. Invisible fumes can become ignited and cause a devastating explosion and fire.

Every household should work out escape routes from each room and then hold fire drills. There should be a meeting place agreed upon outside where everyone is to go. Many people have lost their lives going back into a burning structure in search for someone who was safely outside.

Finally, install smoke detectors and make sure they are approved by UnderwrAers Laboratories or soime other recognized testing laboratory. If the detectors are battery operated, check the batteries often. *** What is odorless, tasteless, and invisible, yet can kill as effectively as a bullet?

The answer is carbon monoxide, sometimes called the silent killer, which accounted for the deaths of 146 Texans last year, reports the Bureau of Vital Statistics of the Texas Department of Health Forty-six of the deaths were due to accidental poisoning, while 91 were listed as suicides. In seven deaths it was undetermined whether the deaths were ac-

cidental or purposely inflicted.

Carbon monoxide poisoning plays no favorites.

Among the accidental victims were a 39-year-old woman who died in an Amarillo motel with an unvented bathroom heater turned on; a 10-month-old Dallas baby, who was sleeping in a room adjacent to a garage where an automobile motor was running; a 22-year-old Crane man who was in a room where an open flame heater was in use; a 62-year-old Ward County woman in a house where the oven in a cookstove was being used for heat; and a 62-year-old Dallas woman in a residence where the gas heater was found to be faulty.

Carbon monoxide is formed by the incomplete combustion of carbon, and anything that burns can form carbon monoxide. This includes the fuel in your car, wood used in your fireplace, charcoal — which often is improperly used sometimes indoors in hibachis — or gas used in heating and cooking.

Carbon monoxide can be lethal unless diluted with fresh air or removed from the living space by proper venting of fires and furnaces.

Jerry F. Lauderdale, Administrator of the Occupational Health Program of the TDH, said persons turning on their furnaces for the first time this fall should check for a blue flame — a sign of proper combustion — and also check to make certain that vents or chimneys are unobstructed. It may be smart to have your gas company or maintenance man check your system.

Carbon monoxide poisoning has noticeable symptoms which include yawning, headache, nausea, dizziness, ringing in the ears, and even abdominal cramps.

"If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning," said Lauderdale, "get out of the house or work place immediately and get fresh air. The time between recognition of symptoms and the onset of fatal poisoning is rapid."

Then the faulty heating system should be turned off, he said.

"The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is especially great in tightly closed trailers, pick-up truck campers, or camp houses," said Lauderdale. "Under no circumstances," he warned, "should an unvented fire — particularly an open gas fire — be left burning while the occupants of these facilities are sleeping."

Lauderdale said he is particularly concerned this year about new kerosene heaters on the market being used in tightly closed places.

Carbon monoxide can build up quickly, said Lauderdale.

Automobile repair garages can be a ready source of carbon monoxide buildup, particularly in the winter when outside doors are closed.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM College Entrance Examination Board. Arrangements to take the S.A.T. or A.C.T. test should be made with their local high school.

SCHOLARSHIP Program For SPJST Members The Slavonic Benevolent Order of The State of Texas established a Scholarship Fund in 1982 to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by SPJST members, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in youth and in our economic and social progress.

TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP Four-year programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. It must remain in force during the tenure of the scholarship.

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or_its equivalent.

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

SELECTION Scholarships are awarded by a Committee selected by the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. The Committee consists of persons who have a recognized standing in the field of education and who are not associated in any other way with the SPJST or the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Applicants who are high school seniors must take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.) or the American College Test (A.C.T.) given by the

calendar. They must maintain academic and personal standards satisfactory to the college and to the Committee. Continuation of a scholarship will depend upon the achievement of the individual recipient and the availability of SPJST funds for maintaining the Scholarship Program.

Criteria for selecting scholarship winners from among high school seniors include: • Results of the S.A.T. and/or A.C.T. • High school records • References and recommendations • The Committee's judgment of the applicant's potential

MILITARY SERVICE AND ILLNESS If a scholarship recipient enters .nilitary service, the scholarship will be held in reserve for a period of up to six (6) months after the date of his/her release from service. Illness or injury that causes a delay in acceptance or continuance of a scholarship will also be considered good cause for holding an award in reserve.

Applicants who are college undergraduates must submit official transcripts of past college work with their application.

The Committee's decisions will be announced before the beginning of the fall semester.

ADMINISTRATION The SPJST Supreme Lodge has full authority to establish the rules and regulations governing the Scholarship Program or to amend them as it deems necessary. Administration and financing of the programs are the exclusive responsibility of the SPJST.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE Scholarship winners may attend any college in the United States of America accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

The Committee has exclusive jurisdiction in selecting scholarship winners. It acts in an advisory capacity to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The SPJST assumes no responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs, or debts of scholarship winners or scholarship applicants and will not be liable therefore in any manner.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS The SPJST will award scholarships in the following amounts: Four-year program . .
