Meeting ng of Th Heritage Czech H agee Society of Texas There will be a meeting of the CZECH HERITAGE SOCIETY of Texas Saturday, 30 October 1982 in the SPJST Hall, Lodge No. 29. in Taylor, Texas, at which time the Society will be formally organized, founded and officers elected. The meeting will start at 10 a.m. with registration and will continue until 3:30 p.m.

Persons interested in our Czech heritage, history and genealogy are invited.

Plans will be formulated for the 2nd Annual CZECH SYMPOSIUM to be held in Temple 28-29 May, 1983.

Some talks will be made by persons already working on extraction of the data on the pioneer CZECH families of Texas for the years 1850-1900.

Sandwiches will be sold at the hall for lunch.

YOUTH MEMBER VALUES SPJST SCHOLARSHIP

By Delores Dobecka With another youth year gone and a new one that started in June, I want to, again, thank our SPJST Society for the $600 scholarship granted to me. I had already written a thank-you letter in the September 16, 1981 issue.

It took many hours of hard work, entertaining, and having fun in our SPJST Lodge No. 6 Youth Club to achieve this accomplishment. To those who have won these scholarships and those who shall in the future, it is a great help toward furthering your education, especially with the high costs.

I have just enrolled in the School of Cosmetology at Hill Junior College in Hillsboro, Texas. I wanted to enter this field for quite a while and this scholarship will enable me to achieve this goal.

To the Youth of the SPJST: "Put

your heart in your youth clubs and work for this honor because it is rewarding."

1982 RECIPIENT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF SPJST SCHOLARSHIP

By Sandra Schoeneman of Lodge 9 I would like to take this opportunity to thank the SPJST for the scholarship I received this year at State YAD. It has helped me further my education. I am currently enrolled in Blinn Junior College in Bryan, Texas. I am studying to be an accountant. After two years of going to Blinn, I will transfer to Texas A&M University.

"I challenge each and every young SPJ ST member to take advantage of the great opportunity the SPJST offers. It takes hard work and determination to accomplish this goal, so here's wishing the best of luck_ to future nominees."

A Tribute To Bro. Edward Mazanec In a letter dated August 18, 1982, SL Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska informed the PC members, editor and SL members that, in a letter dated August 10, 1982, PC Chairman Edward Mazanec resigned effective that date due to the serious illness of his wife, Sister Agnes Mazanec, and that Brother Albert Banik, his District III substitute, would replace him on the PC with Vice

Edward Mazanec Chmn. Angeline Kristinek automatically becoming Chairman.

In their PC meeting held Saturday, September 25th, the Publication Committee members took note of the fact and elected Bro. Emil Matula as vice-chairman with comments from all about their appreciation of the pleasure of working with PC Chairman Mazanec in the past and his sincere, honest and forthright decisions while on the PC and his integrity concerning the Vestnik, always setting personality aside.

Bro. Mazanec served on the PC since January 1, 1969 and as chairman since January 1, 1973.

Your editor certainly appreciates the fairness and foresight of Bro. Mazanec's work and his and the PC's assistance in making the SPJST Vestnik what it is to date. We will miss his good counsel and wish him and Sister Agnes Mazanec the very best.

SPJST Participates In Burleson County Parade

The SPJST was invited to participate in the parade by the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce, which was held September 16, 1982. Among some of the SPJST officials riding in the Society's automobile included SL Vice President Bernie Gebala, District I Director Ben Trcalek, along with Lodge 9 President Richard Vajdak of Snook, Lodge 17 President Andrew Vavra of New Tabor, and Lodge 186 President Clint Luksa of Caldwell. If you come up with an immediate answer, you do not think things through.

If you do not come up with an immediate answer, you are not upto-date. , If you appear cordial, you are playing politics.

If you appear aloof, you should be trimmed down to size.

(Author Unknown) There are still many people who do not know enough about fraternal societies before buying life insurance, therefore, the editor wishes to emphasize on the subject.

A fraternal society is an association of persons drawn together by common interests. The society may be organized chiefly to provide companionship and pleasure for its members, or it may be set up to furnish its members with certain benefits such as life, accident and health insurance.

Also, fraternal societies sometimes take part in programs of civic betterment or in the support of charities and social work.

Fraternal societies are often secret lodges with passwords, ceremonies and initiation rites. Each society adopts its own constitution and by-laws and sets up its own rules of procedure.Membership in the societies is restricted and usually depends on invitations extended by members of the lodge. Some fraternal societies admit only men as members, while a few limit their membership to women.

Many fraternal societies for men have auxiliary chapters, or organizations to which mothers, wives, daughters and sisters of members can belong. A few fraternal societies are limited to a single state, but almost all have national or state membership. Membership in some of the older and larger fraternal organizations numbers into the millions; the SPJST has over 57,000 certificates. ***

When you joined the SPJST, you identified yourself as a person with foresight, who wanted to secure protection and security for yourself and your family. You were probably serious about your membership, but did you or do you know what fraternalism is? The State Insurance Code would define it as follows: A fraternal benefit society is any society or order organized or carried on solely for the mutual benefit of its members and their beneficiaries, not for profit, having a lodge system and a representative form of government.

Another definition would be: A fraternal society is an association of persons drawn together by a common interest for the purpose of obtaining for themselves certain objectives or benefits mutually desired.

From this standpoint, you see that we, in the fraternal field, cannot and should not be measured only in dollars and cents. Fraternal life insurance is more than insurance.

The payment of death benefits is the last service we perform. We, in the SPJST, endeavor to fill the large gap and render services outside the province of insurance commercialism.

Fraternalism gives everyone an opportunity to put their humanitarian instincts to work in a real and substantial manner.

Embedded in each of us is that inner feeling and affection for our fellow human and for those who are near and dear to us through family and cultural ties.

Fraternalism also has made this feeling active, where otherwise it would have been passive. There are benefits and programs that cannot be compared to dollars and profits.

The fraternal interest that lodge members have in each other is responsible for the many "plus" benefits open to you, as members, among one of the most reliable fraternal benefit societies in Texas — the SPJST! *** When a family man dies, do people ask, "Did he provide his family a TV with a cable set," or "Will they be able to keep their new car?" No. They ask, "Will the family have to move from their home? "Will the children be able to go to college?"

"Will his widow need to find a job?"

"How much life insurance did he leave?"

It is a curious thing how much faith people have in life insurance and how quickly they express their belief in it when someone dies; yet how many excuses do they raise against investing in it themselves?

When a man is alive and in good health and so are his neighbors, or friends and relatives, then new cars, TV with cable sets, and countless luxuries for current pleasures have first claim on his income But when he dies, the first questions are: "What about his life insurance? Is there enough for the family?"

It pays to belong to the SPJST Society, as grateful words from bereaved families tell us so often.

The SPJST has state field managers, sales representatives and district directors who stand ready to call these facts to the attention of all family heads who may be forgetting (or postponing) this most important investment in the security of their loved ones. THINK THIS OVER ' '3 SERIOUSLY!' -

ITEM 2: 688.30 Article 33 (b-1), Article 51 (Section 0 A), and Article 91 concern changes 0 as recommended by the Insurance 0 Committee, to allow the Supreme 104.75 Lodge to offer a new insurance 71.70 program if in the best interest of the 129.97 members of the Society. There was a good attendance for the meeting with 21 persons being present. Comments made on procedure of 00172 changes between conventions dates: 001 77 First, the payment of mileage. At 00247 the last convention a formula was 00329 approved to pay mileage for the 00403 next four years. If this formula was 00420 followed according to cost of living 00147 adjustments then mileage paid 00413 would be approximately 34-38-450 00237 during coming years. The Finance 00318 Committee met and concluded the 00379 fee should be set at 35C per mile for 00380 the coming years with no increase. 00052 The Supreme Lodge recommends 00190 that you vote in favor of this 00191 proposal.

00221 Next, actually there are two items 002 39 concerning insurance: First, a 00294 decrease in term insurance, which does not need ratification because 00449 the Supreme Lodge, according to 00003 the By-Laws, has the right to put in 00042 new programs. Secondly, is the 00101 program of annuity. Many 001 64 companies today, not only fraternal 00390 organizations, but also stock 00012 companies are beginning this type of 00085 program (actually a savings' 0 0096 program). This program would be 00144 handled entirely by the Supreme 00323 Lodge. Only preliminary research 00027 has been started, waiting on the 00084 outcome of the ballot from the 00103 delegates. Many of the other 00460 societies already have annuities in 00117 effect. It is the recommendation of 00411 the Insurance Committee and the 00300 Supreme Lodge that this be 00315 approved. Please sign your ballot and return before July 1, 1982.

The progress of the SPJST Society has given increased benefits 00119 to its lodges and members. Over one 00187 million dollars was returned in 00196 premium refunds and other benefits. 00307 Another new program that is being 00358 developed concerns a scholarship 00384 program for graduating high school 00029 seniors. Specific information in 00095 relation to this program can be 00269 obtained from sales representatives 00349 or from printed pamphlets.

The youth program has specific 00446 income investments that provide for 00328 camp allotments and other 00356 expenses. Because of these 00291 investments, the costs for a total of 00381 598 campers was paid in full. It is 00123 also because of these investments 00259 the solvency of SPJST is as high as 00170 it is. Other organizations rate in the 0 00 36 area of 107 with good rates of 110, 00124 our Society rates at 130. Installation of Officers: President Henry Breitkreutz asked Brother Sid Pokladnik to come forward to install the new officers for District III. After giving the installation address and comments to the new officers, Brother Sid Pokladnik also installed the officers for the youth club of District III. Upon completion of the installation ceremonies the president adjourned the meeting.

SFM Smith held dinner/seminars at Seymour and Lowake along with District IV Director Stanley Broz for sales representatives in District IV. Out of the 24 sales representatives in District IV 13 were in attendance at these seminars. Along with their spouses. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and_urge. those not present

to join us in keeping abreast of the changing times of the 80's.

Dear Readers: The SPJST Lodge No. 6 held their regular monthly meeting October 3, 1982 at 3 p.m.

President Robert Dobecka called the meeting to order.

Lanette Hykel and Keith Hykel led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lanette then gave the SPJST Pledge.

All officers were present for the meeting. There were 21 members and 2 guests, Brother Joseph Ondrusek and son, present. Come back, again, we enjoyed having you.

Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read. All other reports were in order.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth club report. The youth members went to "Homecoming", September 17th. Therese Dobecka, one of our members, was nominated for homecoming queen; even though she was not selected, we were very proud of her. September 18th, Therese also represented our lodge at the State Royalty and she came in third place. Congratulations, Therese! The youth club had a Tupperware Party, September 24th and they did very well. Sister Schuetz thanked everyone who supported our youth. The club will be going to Six Flags, October 10th.

(This letter will be printed after we go so I hope everyone had a good time.) The day that the youth club will be going to the rest home is undecided because of the conflict of other activities. Sister Schuetz will schedule an earlier time. October 29th, the youth will have a Halloween Party with a "spookhouse." We hope to see all of you come out for the party. In a few weeks the youth will be selling stick candy in Christmas boots. Therese Dobecka brought the cake.

Brother George Straten gave the Board of Trustees' Report. The next trustees' meeting will be October 29th at 8 p.m.

New members accepted were Juvenile Member Sandra Kay Hanzlicek and transfer of juvenile to adult was Ricky Powell.

The $10 progressive door prize was won by Margaret Schroeder, not present; the $4 door prize, Christine Archer, not present; and the $2 door prize was won by President Robert Dobecka.

The next Board of Trustees' meeting will be October 29, 1982 at 9 p.m. The next monthly lodge meeting will be Friday, November 5, 1982 at 8 p.m. (This has been changed from November 14th to November 5th.)

I hope to see everyone at our Halloween Party.

Meeting called to order by President Andrew Vavra with all officers present.

Resolutions of sympathy were read for Henry Matcek and Frank Mrnustik.

New member accepted was Laurie Vajdak.

Discussion was held on the cleaning and refinishing of the lodge hall floor.

December 5th at our regular meeting date, we will have our lodge's memorial service at 6:30 p.m. followed by a turkey and dressing supper.

Interesting Words From Lodge No. 51, Ellinger Dear Members and Friends: Oh, you should have been there!

You don't know what you missed.

And, the old saying: that "what I don't know — doesn't hurt me", is not always true.

What we are talking about is the September quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 51, that memorable Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19th.

Our business meeting was called to order by President Kocian, with fourteen members and three visitors present. The meeting did not last very long at all because everyone was eager to get started on the card and domino games.

The members did, however, decide to continue the games following our meetings, and the next games will be held the first Sunday in December; that is Sunday, December 5, 1982. Don't forget the meeting will start promptly at 1 p.m.

STICK: 1st place by the "professional" 3-time 1st place., winner, who dares anyone to beat him: Albert Cook. Second place: we had a tie between Mrs. Joe B. Krenek and Mrs. Elsie Zatopek, and winner of the "booby" prize in that category was Mrs. Adela Stibora.

We do believe that we can make our meetings even more interesting if we can convince you in honesty, that the more of you attending, the more interesting the meetings and the games will be. October 17th Meeting For Lodge Waco Dear Members: Lodge No. 66 will hold its regular monthly meeting at Linden Hall, Sunday, October 17th. The meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m., and the youth club meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The lodge will host a Halloween Party at the meeting for the youth members. The youth members are to come dressed in costume and prizes will be given; a prize for ugliest, prettiest, most original, etc.

There will be chocolate cookies and orange drinks served after the meeting. Ladies are asked to bring sandwiches. There will also be drinks for the older members.

Lodge No. 133 San Antonio

San Antonio Lodge No. 133 held their monthly meeting September 12th. The attendance was 26 members. Due to the many activities and many of our members who went to the Nebraska Polka Days, we were minus a few of our members.

Our next meeting will be October 10 at 1505 S. Gevers St. We urge all members to attend. Our meetings are short, businesslike, and very interesting. Refreshments are always served, and entertainment is furnished after the meetings. We will be discussing our coming Thanksgiving Dinner and, also, the annual Christmas party. Also very important is the appointment of a Nominating Committee, and other committees, so come out and enjoy yourself with all your other fraternal members.

The meeting in September was opened by President Matula leading the membership with the Pledge of Allegiance. The report given by the secretary of the previous month was accepted as was the treasurer's report.

We received four members into our lodge, transfers from Lodge No. 107. We welcome Sister Frances Kapplemann, Cindy Scogin, Janice Coffee and Debbie Rau. We do hope that you will enjoy our meetings and our hospitality.

Bro. Kleprlik gave us a very good report on the District VII meeting which was held at Lodge No. 107, Floresville, Texas. We want to wish all our members, who are on the sick list, a speedy recovery, and we do think of you very much. An invitation was received from Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, inviting all of us to the grand opening of their new hall. I did meet Bro. Jerry Dressler at the hall some time last month, and I must say that it was quite a project to undertake, and Lodge No. 172 is to be highly commended for their efforts; we hope them all the good things in life and their members should be very proud of their undertaking.

A fall party is planned in conjunction with the regularly scheduled October meeting which will be held Sunday, October 17 with a schedule as follows: 2-5 Meeting and Meal; 5-8 Dance.

The lodge is furnishing the meat and members are asked to bring a vegetable or salad and a dessert, the music will be furnished by Country Loving. Door prizes will be given away using membership numbers for the drawing. Members should have their membership cards, if you have not already picked up your new membership card, they will be at the front ticket office as you enter.

Other business to be discussed at the October meeting will be nomination of officers and directors for 1983; also amendments to several articles in the Rs and Rs will be voted on along with regular business.

September 19, 1982 Meeting In the last meeting, which was held September 19th, Eugene Landry and Norris Lawrence were appointed to serve on the Nominating Committee by President Oman and Norman Fuessel was appointed

by Chairman Arnold Leschber.

President Oman reported that the construction on the BBQ pit will begin in 30 to 45 days, about $1,180 has been donated toward this project with 2 additional pledges not received as yet.

Several pieces of correspondence were read including an invitation from the lodge in Pasadena regarding their Grand Opening November 7. Also, a letter from concerned members regarding the irregular hours of the Sundowner Club was read.

Motion was made by Jeff Case and seconded by Sandra Giarrusso to accept the Board's recommendation regarding the incorporation of our Lodge 187 in accordance with recommendations made by the CPA. Motion carried. This is to be made effective January 1, 1983.

Motion was made by Sandra Giarrusso and seconded by Bill Holman to have a phone jack installed in the cloak room to avoid excessive traffic in the ticket office.

Motion carried.

Motion was made by Sandra and seconded by Lyman Larson to accept the Board's recommendation to continue the present arrangement with the Hutto Livestock Boosters for the Saturday night kitchen work through the end of December. Motion carried.

Allyne Leschber made a motion to move the fall Clean-up Day to Saturday, October 23 at 9 a.m., seconded by Al Giarrusso, motion carried. Everyone is encouraged to come out and help with the cleanup.

Drinks and lunch will be served to those who help clean up the hall.

Secretary's minutes were read and approved and so was the treasurer's report. Financial Secretary Carolyn Merkord reported and moved that 8 new members be accepted, motion was seconded by Lyman Larson, motion carried.

President Oman welcomed the new members.

GRAND OPENING NOVEMBER 7, 1982 Lodge #172 SPJST 3609 Preston Road, Pasadena Texas The new home of Lodge #172 S.P.J.S.T. plans a day of festivities for the Grand Opening of this new lodge, Bar-B-Q, singing, dancing, other entertainment and door prizes.

The Lodge will be available to organizations and companies for parties, dances, seminars, conventions, luncheons, machinery and equipment shows, car shows, boat shows and etc.

The Lodge will also be available to individuals and schools for banquets, weddings, reunions, parties and dances.

The Lodge will have a seating capacity for 1000, with Kitchen and Bar facilities.

The Lodge will have a stage with its own sound system for small or large bands, skits and plays.

The Lodge dance floor will be of oak parquet, 80 feet x 90 feet, and can be used for skating parties.

Bookings for Hall Rentals for the year 1983 will begin in mid September 1982.

Youth leaders, this would be a good contest within your youth clubs to increase membership and stir up some enthusiasm. The youth would earn points for participating in a contest, as well as earning points for each youth they recruit.

All youth clubs in the district are invited, also any lodge without a youth club is invited so come out and see how the youth members enjoy themselves and you may want to join their club or start one in your lodge. Those youngsters who made friends at camp are looking forward to seeing their friends from all of the other lodges; we hope you are planning to come.

We will have door prizes, as usual, so you also may be a winner.

This will be the last district-wide activity for 1982 because all of the children are busy with school activities and soon will start getting ready for the Christmas programs and other fall activities.

State Royalty is now history but I would like to once again congratulate all of the participants because they all did a fine job. The lucky and happy winners were State King Darrin Banik and his Duke Tommy Pavelka and State Queen Mandy Mikulencak with her Duchess Kari Kovar; Mandy and Kari are from District II so we are very proud of them, and wish them much happiness in the year ahead.

The week prior to the competition, Mandy told me that she will study and rehearse real hard because she wants to win for me and the district, which made me very happy and then the day came when she became winner which also made her very proud and happy: Thank you, Mandy, for your great efforts.

King Contestant Troy Marx also did a good job for District II who came out second runner-up. Troy, thanks to you for your efforts and do not get discouraged but try again and that goes for all of the youth members who entered Royalty in District or State; this same applies to YAD, try and try again!

Items of Interest Load luggage in garage. Packing your bags into the trunk of a car that is in the front driveway is a sure giveaway that you are leaving.

When driving, the watchword is locked doors. In cities, it is well to keep all windows closed or cracked only enough for ventilation. Purse snatchers and possible muggers are kept out that way.

Stay with children when stopping at rest areas. Don't allow them to go anywhere unattende-d.

Avoid late-night stops at desolate rest areas or service stations, if at all possible.

Watch the attendants at service stations. It is a good idea to get out of the car and observe what's going on. Attendants have been known to damage cars in order to con you into a repair job, or to sell you a service you don't need, such as the unnecessary replacement of tires, battery or parts.

Keep your car in gear while stopped at an intersection, or if stopped by someone claiming to be a policeman. A quick getaway is possible in case of a surprise assault.

Don't accept help from strangers unquestioningly if you have an emergency on the highway. Pull off to the side of the road, turn on emergency flashers, keep doors locked and windows raised. Stay with the car, and tie a piece of cloth to your antenna as a signal you need help.

But be wary if someone approaches on foot and offers assistance.

Don't stop to help someone in distress, either. This is sometimes a ruse used by armed thugs. Instead, jot down the license number and notify the police as soon as possible.

Keep your car in sight while you are dining at a roadside restaurant.

Take suitcases with you at night. It is best not to leave any luggage or valuables in the car overnight.

Bump and thump. If another car bumps yours or tries to force you off the road, don't stop to investigate.

Blow your horn, using short blasts, and drive to a police station or service station. If you are near home, you should not turn into your own driveway; it's better to head for a gas station or garage where people are around and help can be found. ***
