Sid Pokladnik, will perform at the Czech Day, October 17, in Dallas.

The American-Czech Culture Society wishes to announce that the 42nd American-Czech Day this year will be at State Fair of Texas in Dallas Sunday, October 17th and extends a cordial invitation to all those of Cechoslovak descent and many friends who admire our heritage, to attend this day and make it the best Czech Day ever. To those of you who are familiar with the facilities of the fair grounds, the program will be similar to those in the past years.

This year again will be a Czech Roman Catholic Mass and will be celebrated by Most Rev. John Morkovsky, bishop from the GalvestonHouston diocese, which will start at 8:30 a.m. in the Hall of State Lecture Hall; the Dallas Czech Singers will also perform.

In the Band Shell at 9:30 a.m., there will be coffee and kolache served. The Band Shell is located on the corners of M. L. (Luther) King Blvd. (formerly Forest Avenue) and Second Avenue, where the main program of the day will commence at 10 a.m. and it will last all day until 6 p.m. In the Band Shell there will also be good food and refreshments available from noon on for a reasonable price.

On the program at the Band Shell, SPJST Vice President Bernard Gebala will address our gathering. Entertainment will consist of folk dancing, singing and good music for your enjoyment will be accompanied by our well-known Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Brother Sid Pokladnik. Continued entertainment will take place at 3:30 p.m. with the very fine Jodie Mikula Orchestra of Ennis who will provide dancing music for your enjoyment.

Other merriment will take place on the program in the Women's Building from 12 noon until 1 p.m. The Sokol exhibition is scheduled to perform at the Marine Field from 2 to 3 p.m. and then on the Big Tex Stage from 3 to 4 p.m. All three of these program numbers are mostly for the general audience which are always well-received.

You are encouraged to wear your costume (kroj) to help create a colorful atmosphere and, finally, your presence will be greatly appreciated.

There will be some souvenirs from the old country available.

Let's make this one of the biggest Czech Days in Texas!

—Author Unknown Before discussing other matters of general interest, your editor wishes to remind the members of the events in our Society.

Beginning October 10th, members in two districts will have an opportunity to attend their respective district meeting; District V, which is comprised of 17 lodges, will have their meeting at Lodge 88 in Houston, and District VI, comprised of 22 lodges, is scheduled to hold their meeting at the Moravia Dining Hall in Moravia, with Lodge 4 Hallettsville, hosting. We hope each district, on that date, will have a large representation from its local lodges because these district meetings are for the members of our Order. Long ago, before the districts were organized in 1952, officers of the Supreme Lodge would call the local solicitors together. Afterwards, these sectional meetings were held for the enjoyment and enlightenment of every SPJST member who wished to attend.

Brothers and Sisters, since those days have passed, the editor hopes most of you haven't lost interest in your obligations of the Society's affairs. Districts V and VI have their program schedule in this issue for your reference; therefore, make plans to attend and participate. ***

October 11th the nation, once again, will pay tribute to the great Italian mariner and explorer whose historic voyage of discovery led to the permanent settlement of the New World by the Old. With the support of the Spanish Crown, Columbus journeyed across unchartered waters to open the way for future generations of immigrants, who would later establish the new nations of the Americas.

As his heirs, we shall take time in commemorating the spirit of Christopher Columbus as part of our national heritage, which now is being proclaimed on the second Monday in October. ***

We tend to think of these United States as though they had always been united. But our history is much older than our union. It is a bit disconcerting to recall that we have not yet been a republic for a period, as long as we were colonies of the British crown. We inaugurated our first president in 1789, 193 years ago. However, for a period of 169 years — from 1607 to 1776 — we were a subject people. Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, and other men grew to maturity under British dominion. It was not until John Tyler, our 10th president, did we have a chief executive born in the new republic.

It is not our present purpose to draw any special moral from these historic records. But it may be interesting, and perhaps rewarding, to consider, on this occasion, that, as runs the course of nations, we are of tender years. The times of testing — the centuries of maturity — are to come. Let us defer the laurel for yet a little while. ***

October 17th, which is the 42nd annual Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas, promises to be another splendid occasion. You will have the chance to witness several circles of dancers, performing National Folk dances, accompanied by live music of the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Brother Sid Pokladnik.

In addition to entertainment, there will be numerous other activities planned for your enjoyment at various locations on the fairgrounds. The main program will take place at the Band Shell beginning at 10 a.m., and SL Vice President Bernie Gebala is going to be the principal speaker. Most of you will have a privilege to observe the day's program and to reminisce with your acquaintances.

The Czech Cultural Society, with the help of other interested members, has arranged to provide kolache and coffee for the early arrivals, and more food will be available for a reasonable price during the noon hour until?

Plan to attend and help contribute to Czech Day, which is made possible by the many members of the Czech fraternal societies, including the SPJST. ***

October 24th marks a date for another large undertaking which will be held at Lodge 88, in Houston, in observance of Czech Day. Their officers and committees planned a delicious meal and many activities, including a Parade of Costumes and dance.

Lodge 88 President Larry Pflughaupt asks that you pay honor to the Czech culture and heritage by your attendance and enjoyment at the festivities.

October 30th-31st is Texas Fraternal Congress Meeting and several of our SPJST rank and file members will attend the sessions, also some of our youth will be represented in the "Youth Spectacular" portion Saturday night at The Inn Of The Hills Hotel in Kerrville.

President's Office SPJST Supreme Lodge To Meet In La Grange An Invitation To commemorate the 85th year of the founding of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), the Supreme Lodge will be meeting in the Fayette County Courthouse the morning of October 12th, 1982, starting at 9 a.m. The body will be meeting in the District Courtroom on the second floor, the same courtroom where the SPJST had its origins and beginnings — first with 26 Czech-Texans meeting there December 28, 1896, and again for their First Convention 20 June 1897. The first meeting consisted of delegates from Texas lodges belonging to a Czech fraternal whose home offices were in Chicago at that time. That first meeting was for the purpose of organizing an independent and separate fraternal Society in Texas. After a short meeting, the representatives at that meeting elected a 3-man committee to draw up a charter for the new organization and set the First Convention for 20 June 1897. The 3man committee consisted of J. R. Kubena, Augustin Haidusek and Frank Cihal. (Haidusek later resigned from the committee and L. V. Vanek was appointed in his place).

At that convention the delegates decided that the official organizational date of the new Society would be set as July 1, 1897.

The October 12th meeting will be recessed shortly before noon, when the members of the Supreme Lodge will travel back to Temple to continue and complete their regular quarterly meeting.

Members from all over the state are invited to this special meeting, but members from area lodges in Fayette and Lavaca Counties are especially invited to sit in on the Supreme Lodge deliberations.

These include No. 1 in Fayetteville, 4 in Hallettsville, 16 Bila Hora, 19 in Velehrad, 23 in Moravia, 38 in Smithville, 44 in Industry, 51 in Effinger, 67 in Schulenburg, 68 in Nelsonville, 106 in La Grange, 179 in Warrenton, and 184 in Moulton. Local lodge secretaries of those lodges are being sent special invitations from the Home Office. Making a special appearance at the meeting will be former longtime Fayette County Clerk John Kubena, who is the son of one of the founders and organizers of the SPJST, and 155th District Court Judge Oliver Kitzman, Sr., of Hempstead.

The Home Office was located in Fayetteville from 1897 to 1953, when the delegates to a convention ini Houston voted to locate the permanent lLeadwartm,iji Texas. The late J. R. Kubena served

as the first secretary and administered the affairs of the Society out of his offices in Fayetteville, the last headquarters having been located in the present-day Chovanec Grocery in that city.

SL President Morris issued the following statement: "We are honored to have this opportunity to return to the very halls of the room and place where we had our humble beginnings 85 and 86 years ago. We appreciate the consideration by the Commissioners Court of Fayette County and Judge Kitznrian in allowing us the use of their facilities for a few hours. Area SPJST members and other interested individuals are invited to attend and in a sense re-create the events of 85 years ago in the same location. It will be an historic occasion."

Election of Merger Lodge Meeting For Hillje Members Dear Lodge 40, Hillje Members: The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 40 was held September 14, 1982 at 7:30 p.m. in Hillje Hall.

It began with President Jerry Polasek calling the meeting to order.

Secretary Albert Kresta, Sr. read the minutes and they were approved as written.

A report was given by TreasurerFinancial Secretary Frank Sablatura and showed that all financial matters were up-to-date.

On the agenda was a detailed discussion on charges for the use of Hillje Hall and further improvements were suggested. Member James Kulcak was asked to obtain prices for a new coin-op for the airconditioning system. He has promised to report at the next meeting.

Further new business was a suggested merger between SPJST Lodge 40, Hillje and SPJST Lodge 50, El Campo by visiting President Rita Vanek and her husband of Lodge 50, El Campo. It was suggested that a merger could be for the mutual benefit of both lodges.

Members present voted on and the motion passed, that an election be held Tuesday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m., in Hillje SPJST Hall regarding the merger with Lodge 50, El Campo. You MUST be present at this meeting to vote!

President Polasek was instructed that election information needed to be published in two issues of the Vestnik and further instructed that a letter be sent to all members of Lodge 40; further the president will notify the Supreme Lodge and obtain official ballots for merger votes. He instructed that Vice President James Bacak and committee will be in charge of the coming election.

We were most pleased to welcome District VI Director Matt Vanek to our meeting and hope he can be present for our next meeting.

Entertainment by the Lodge Orchestra and various singing and dance groups will be provided from noon until 4:30 p.m. Highlighting the day's program will be the Parade of Czech Costumes to open the Free Dance at 5 o'clock with the Vrazel Polka Band playing your favorite musical arrangements.

Brother Frank and Sister Merel Kovar were wed in a beautiful ceremony Sunday, September 19, in the Greek Orthodox Church. A reception followed in the church hall, and was enjoyed by all. You are wished much happiness in the years to come.

The National Coaches' Congress was held here at the Americana Hotel with over 900 coaches attending. Quite a few SPJST members from far and near, who are coaches, attended.

We were all saddened to hear of the sudden death of Sister Lorraine (Prevratil) Zdenek of Chicago, Illinois this weekend. She was the daughter of the late Brother Ben and Sister Marie Prevratil of Dallas.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to all of the family and may she rest in peace.

Just a reminder to all members that our next meeting, Tuesday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m., will be to elect a Nominating Committee. This committee will nominate officers to be presented to the membership at the November meeting. Members will then have all of November to decide whether or not they want these nominated officers to be elected at the December meeting.

All are urged to attend this very important meeting.

Since there was no meeting in September, news is scarce, but we do want to extend our heartiest wedding congratulations to Susan Kay Hejl and Michael Eugene Gamble who were married July 30th.

A get-well card was sent to, our Vice President Jess Taylor who suffered second and third degree burns on his hands, chest and face while burning trash at his home. It is reported he is recovering nicely.

I started to write a long letter and brag a little but I keep remembering what happened one Sunday when a farmer attended a small country church and he and the preacher were the only ones present. The preacher asked the farmer, if he wanted to hear his sermon? The farmer said, "I'm not too smart, but if I went out to feed my cattle and only one showed up I'd feed it." So the preacher began his sermon. One hour passed, then two hours, then two and a half hours and the preacher finally finished and came down to ask the farmer, how he liked his sermon? The farmer answered slowly, "Well, I'm not very smart, but if I went to feed my cattle and only one showed up, I sure wouldn't feed him a truck load of hay."

Choral Club News

With Henry Janacek playing melodious tunes on his accordion and the club members singing the lovely Czech songs, the Seaton Choral Club was really in fine voice practicing for their appearance at Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas, October 17th. Those singing were: Marie Zvolanek, Mathu and Elsie Cabla, Frank and Eleonora Spanhel, Frank and Lillian Mikulec, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Emily Stuteville, Georgia Sodek, Agnes Schiller, Martha Klusacek, Mary Holick, Della Psencik, Mary Vasicek, Emily Dohnalik, Thelma Bartosh, Ruby L. Bolton, Otto Hanus, Anne Krcha, Vallie Zavodny, Helen and Henry Janacek and our song leader, Annie Jakubec. Mrs. Marie Zvolanek reviewed two Czech poems which she will present as part of our program. The club then sang "Waltz Across Texas" for our guest, Mrs. Emma Yakesch of Holland, the mother of Evelyn and Robert Hesse.

Vice-President Helen Janacek presided at the business meeting in the absence of Pres. Dorothy Morris.

Sec. Lillian Mikulec read the minutes and also reported'a balance of $275 in the treasury. Helen stated that all but two of the bus seats are taken; those on the waiting list are asked to call Mrs. Morris to learn if they have seats. The club voted to meet the bus on the Goodyear lot at 7 a.m. October 17th.

Ladies' Circle, Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: "Time really flies." The other day while watching television someone announced that several people here in Fort Worth had seen flocks of geese flying south. Of course, that could only mean one thing — colder weather is certainly on its way. In fact, several of us have already checked our electric blankets and heating systems.

The Ladies' Circle opened with President Mary Powers calling the meeting to order. Secretary Clara Marchioni read the minutes, and Mary Ann Krivanek read the treasurer's report.

A thank you note was read from Lodge 92 showing their appreciation for the new formica kitchen top and the nice kitchen utensils donated by our Circle under the direction of Mrs. Marie Tesar. A note from Anne Polk was read and appreciated. Send us another one, Anne.

Lillie McMillen, Sunshine Committee, reported on Joe Merlick, who was in the hospital, and we hope he is home and well by now. We are glad to hear that Lydia Palachek is home from the Medical Plaza Hospital where she had an eye implant.

We wish to extend our sympathy to the family of Don and Rose Steinman of Lodge 154 on the loss of their son, Roy Steinman. May he rest in peace.

Reflections on the Chervenka's Fourth Annual Lincoln Festival Trip I had heard others speak about the Chervenka's Annual Bus Trip to the Pla-Mor Czech Days Polka Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska. I knew they must be exaggerating, but my husband and I decided to go along this year.

It looked a little like a port of embarkation that Thursday night, August 12, as cars were coming from all directions and depositing the passengers and luggage on the Chervenka's front lawn in Dallas.

They said the police helicopter probably would not be over this year to investigate since they had been notified.

Everyone was saying good-bye to relatives, hello to friends, and meeting soon-to-be new friends as they waited for the 9 p.m. arrival of the buses.

Mildred was greeting everyone as they arrived and sending the cars off to be parked in the driveways of nearby friends. Calvin was inside making last minute badge changes and signs and selecting taped music for the two buses.

Janie Nemec was passing out song books and name badges to everyone as they arrived. Little did we know how much the song books would be used before we would return to Dallas. Thanks to Henrietta Schindler for helping to prepare the song books.

The name badges were made in the shape of Texas, gave the home town of each person, and included blue bonnet flowers, which Janie had painted on each one of them.

Nobody would really have to wonder from whence we came.

The group consisted of people from Abbott, Azle, Burleson, Crowley, Dallas, Ennis, Floresville, Fort Worth, Garland, Irving, Mesquite, Red Oak, Richardson, Roanoke, San Antonio, Seymour, Waco and West, Texas. Members were from the SPJST, RVOS, KJT, KJZT, CSA, SVPS, WFLA, American Sokol Organization, Catholic Czech Club, K.C., and Circle of Czech Women Lodges.

When the buses arrived, it must have taken us all of two minutes to store our luggage and board them.

As the group departed, the ones who had taken the trip before were all in high spirits, and the "first timers" were full of questions. Holding on to their cool aid containers, they couldn't find a glass of water until their arrival in Oklahoma City.

There was plenty of friendly conversation and anticipation as the group made its way across the Red River and through the Arbuckle mountains. Recorded music was interspersed with live accordion music, songs, and other entertainment.

Barbara and David Dybala, Dennis Kral and Barbara's rubber chicken helped keep the chatter box going on Bus No. 2. Mildred and Calvin did likewise on Bus No. 1 and Norbert Blazek supplied the button accordion music.

Nobody slept to Oklahoma City, where we all got off while the buses were serviced and we changed drivers. The light of the bus , station

6/VESTNIK — Wednesday, October 6, 1982 gave us a first real chance to meet each other and visit.

Friday After leaving Oklahoma City, some Czech waltzes on the bus speaker system soon put us all to sleep and we awakened near Wichita, Kansas, for a stretch and coffee stop. You do not just drop in on a roadside cafe with 85 people wanting coffee, but the bus drivers were good in knowing of a place which could accommodate us.

Daylight found us still in Kansas, but we soon crossed into Nebraska. There we saw miles and miles of beautiful corn crops.

Overhead irrigation was being used for the corn, which was planted thicker than I had ever seen before, before, but the farmers said they made good yield of 100 to 150 bushels per acre.

There had been heavy rains in Nebraska and many roads were under repair, so we had to make some detours and were delayed somewhat in reaching our next stop in York, Nebraska. By 9 a.m., everyone was ready for breakfast and it was terrific. Mildred had made arrangements for a buffet breakfast with juice, fruit, eggs, sausage, biscuits, gravy and coffee, all you could eat. Everyone enjoyed it and still there were no complaints of being tired or sleepy.

The 50 miles from York to Lincoln seemed short. After our 11 a.m. arrival at the motel, keys to rooms were passed out by Mildred, Calvin, Dennis and David. Although most were ready for showers and rest, some still went for their exercise walks.

At 5 p.m., we all gathered, boarded the buses, and went out to the Pla-Mor Ballroom where the first session of the festival was about to start. Upon arrival there, we met with other Texans who had come by cars and plane, making well over 100 Texane (Texans) in attendance.

Pla-Mor owner, Gene Benes, had reserved a section of the hall for us and we made it our beachhead with Texas signs, flags, ribbons, balloons, and armadillo signs on the tables and overhead. Thanks to John Sykora and Bernard Jones for the Texas flag holders and wood carved letters.

The music started at 6 p.m. inside the ballroom with Math Sladky and Al Grebnik alternating in each playing an hour at a time. Outside, under the Big Top Tent, the music started at 6:30 p.m. with Moostash Joe, and Dean Hansen alternating in each playing for an hour at a time.

The Nebraska brass music was beautiful for dancing or for listening. Many brought their tape recorders for taping the music, which no one seemed to mind.

We, the "first timers" on the trip, were all in awe. We knew now why the ones who had been here before were in such high spirits and we were saying to ourselves "how did we ever miss going here to this festival sooner?"

If anyone didn't speak or understand Czech, Polish, or German by the time we were on our way to the motel, they began to understand a little, or they thought they did, anyway..

Saturday It was a cool, drizzly day, so it was good to sleep a little late and then to make the Happy-Chef 4restaurant) a

little happier. While Mildred and some others went out to the Ballroom early to claim and hold tables, about 40 of us in one of the buses, went on a tour of Lincoln.

With Calvin serving as a tour guide, we drove down the Corn Husker Highway and into town by the University of Nebraska Campus and the Big Red Stadium. We got out to take pictures against the Nebraska State Capitol building, which is topped with a statue of a man hand-sowing (broadcasting) wheat.

We then drove along the Capitol Parkway through the parks and zoo areas and through residential areas with houses both small and large.

We returned by way of the main street through town, the Nebraska State Fair Grounds, and the Race Track.

We arrived at the Ballroom for the dancing, which was starting at 12 noon. Ballroom bands were Gene LeBotte, Czechlanders, Ernie Kucera and Jolly Bohemians.

Outside, under the Big Top, the bands were Al Grebnik, Bouncing Czechs, Frank Kostka, and Ron Nadherny. Heavy rains and hail fell for about an hour in the afternoon, but this didn't stop people from enjoying the music, dancing, food and refreshments. They put out old carpets surrounding the dance floor where it was wet. Soon, the sun came out and made things well again.

It was interesting to see the people from Wisconsin, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Minnesota, South Carolina, Michigan, Florida, Kansas, Arkansas, Nebraska, and many other states. They were of all ages.

The older ones danced as much as the young, or maybe more.

At about 7:30 p.m., the Texane began gathering under the Big Top where Mildred and Calvin were sitting, listening to Frank Kostka's music. These two had two full days of seeing that everyone was enjoying the trip and they were now resting a little. But they didn't rest long, because the Texas gentlemen soon were asking Mildred to dance and the ladies had Calvin dancing.

About 8 p.m., Barbara Dybala jumped up on the band stand and started talking with the band leader.

He handed her the microphone and she used a mixture of Czech and English to emcee the "50th Anniversary Celebration" for Calvin and Mildred, who were really observing their 12th Anniversary on this very day. The entire group showed their appreciation by giving them some of their "prized possessions" and a hundred dollar bill.

The Texane and others formed 4 circles around the dancing couple as the Ron Nadherny band played "Waltz Across Texas". Calvin and Mildred were most surprised and appreciative; they thanked everyone with their smiling faces.

After a full afternoon and night of dancing, everyone seemed ready to leave when the Saturday Session ended. If there had been any "jet lag", it was overshadowed by all the excitement of the day.

Sunday Most people were up early to catch the early bus to the Pla-Mor for the 10 a.m. Polka Mass under the Big Top. Everywhere you looked, you saw the beautiful Czech- and Polish

costumes featuring red skirts, white lace trimming, white aprons, and white blouses with large puffed 1/4 sleeves, much embroidery stitching and lace trimmed collars and cuffs.

Some wore bolero vests of different colors. Some of the girls wore black boots and small white lace bonnets.

The men wore different colored vests with fancy bright silver or gold trimmings, white shirts, ties, and dark trousers.

Some of these costumes were quite old and came from Czechoslovakia many, many years ago. All of these included fine lace and hand-work, which we seldom see anymore, except maybe in a museum. It was a beautiful sight.

The priest who served mass, mentioned several times, "I can't believe what I am seeing". He said all the costumes reminded him of Czechoslovakia where he had been just 6 weeks ago. He served a mass there under a large tent, but the attendance was smaller than here, where there was standing room only.

The Math Sladky Orchestra played while members of the Czech Choraliers of Lincoln were joined by many of our Texas group to sing for the mass. The priest thanked the singers for the beautiful singing and mentioned, that even though one might want to dance to the polka music, we should wait a little while.

He expressed his wishes that all then would have a good time dancing and enjoying the good music for the rest of the day. This Polka Mass was the first one for me, but it is something I shall always remember.

After mass, we went into the ballroom for lunch, where we could select from several types of Czech foods. The bands playing inside the ballroom alternately for one hour at a time, were Dean Hansen, Leonard Becway, Gene LeBotte and Frank Hazuka. Outside, under the Big Top, the bands were Math Sladky, Bouncing Czechs, Ernie Kucera, and Adolph Nemetz. Many were buying records, tapes, and cassettes from the band leaders. Many of the band leaders made mention of how much they had enjoyed playing in Texas, and said they are ready to play in Texas at our beck and call. Many said the hospitality shown to them by the SPJST lodges of Texas was highly appreciated.

At 3 p.m., I do believe everyone came outside under the Big Top to listen to the Button Accordion Jamboree for 2 hours. Even our own Texan, Norbert Blazek, was a contestant. Maybe he didn't get the large trophy, but he won a blue ribbon in our books.

The dancing resumed and still there were no complaints of being tired, but a few feet were beginning to swell. We had a few who didn't polka before they arrived, but Leo took lessons from Martha, Josephine, and Natalie and seemed to learn quite well.There was an attractive young lady on the trip— her first. She said she knew no one and wondered if she would get to dance any. Going home Sunday night, she said, "Well, I don't believe I've missed a dance". She couldn't wear her shoes, but she was happy.

After everyone was accounted for on the buses, we returned to the motel to pack our grips for an early departure Monday morning. Some of us stopped by the cafe for a social gab fest and sandwiches.

Monday One of our drivers didn't hear his alarm go off, so we were leaving Lincoln a little late at 7:45 a.m. The drivers were great. One of our young Texas ladies thought so, too, having lunch with him. They were good drivers and got us there and back with no problems. We had a little ceremony for them at the cafeteria in Wichita.

Mildred and Calvin had made arrangements with Joe and Evelyn Schleis for us to visit and have breakfast in Wilber, Nebraska, Monday morning. Wilber is the Czech Capitol of Nebraska and all businesses are appropriately decorated.

As the two buses stopped in front of the M & D Bar, pictures of our group were taken by a photographer from the Wilber Republican newspaper. Evelyn and Joe Schleis, with a number of Czech ladies, escorted us inside the building where long tables had been set up for our breakfast. Gregory G. Barnes, president of the Nebraska Czechs, extended his greetings.

Wilber Mayor Harold Schwabover welcomed us all and gave the Chervenkas a key to the City.

Would you believe, even a small band was playing and a Czech choral group sang songs while we ate breakfast. After a very enjoyable breakfast, everyone toured the city, buying sausage, jaternice, jelita, kolaches, and cook books. Most everyone toured the Wilber Czech museum to which the people of Wilber had donated many, many things, including linens, pictures, dresses, baby chairs, cradles, beautiful handlace, etc.

I was really intrigued by a design that had been made from ladies hair and mounted in a glass-covered frame. Some of the ladies in the museum told us the hair had been wetted with sugar and water to keep the design in place.

As we were departing from Wilber, our hosts, Joe and Evelyn Schleis gave each bus a large box of kolaches, so we could snack on them on the way home.

To help pass the time of the trip home, we had films, and live entertainment including flappers, playboy bunnies, radio interviews, and more singing.

From Wilber to Wichita, Mildred, Calvin, Helen Sampson, Mary Brown, and Norbert and Pauline Blazek from Bus No. 1 visited on Bus No. 2. In exchange, Barbara and David Dybala, Helen Macik, Della Holik and Josie and Frank Prochaska visited on Bus No. 1.

Norbert provided the accordion accompaniment, Helen Sampson led the singing, and Mildred "conducted" several songs. We enjoyed it all.

For a while, we thought the buses had separated for good; but sure enough, we all got together for a late lunch at . the-new•Furrz s- Cafeteria- in

Wichita Kansas, at about 3:30 p.m.

About 7 p.m., we arrived in Oklahoma City, where the buses had to be serviced and we changed bus drivers. Instead of waiting at the bus station, we went to a new mall where we enjoyed getting out, walking, eating ice cream, window shopping, etc. It's a small world as Henrietta and Raymond Pavliska met people at the mall from back home in Seymour.

We left Oklahoma City, about 9 p.m. and some tried to catch a nap, however, others sang and some danced the "Bird dance" in the aisle of the bus. The group arrived at the Chervenka's residence about midnight. In what seemed a very short time, we were on our way home or to spend the night in Dallas before leaving for other parts of Texas.

We are back at our daily routines now, but many pleasant memories remain. We are looking forward to the time when we may meet to reminisce about our 1982 trip to the Pla-Mor and to make plans for 1983.

On behalf of the entire group, I would like to thank Mildred and Calvin Chervenka for making all of this possible. They are the happy couple with smiles on their faces, songs in their- hearts, and twinkles in their eyes, so you know they have to be Czech.

Aren't we glad to be of Czech, German, Polish, Anglo, Irish, Scotch and Indian descent and that our forefathers settled in Texas!

Dallas, Texas Dear Readers, I would like to share some memories with you, of a trip I took to the Play-Mor Hall in Lincoln, Nebraska. This is a trip that Calvin and Mildred Chervenka get together yearly. If you have never been, well let me tell you to start right now saving your change in a fruit jar and get your name on the list. It is a fun trip. This was the 9th "Pla-Mor Czech Days Polka Festival". It lasted 3 days.

The Midwest's favorite Polka Bands were featured. One band would play in the ballroom and another outside under the Big Top tent. The music was played continuously with no intermissions. Over the 3 days there were 15 bands who played a total of 27 hours of dancing.

Aug. 12, at 8 p.m., about 83 of us met on Calvin and Mildred's front yard. It looked like a Gypsy Camp — with suit cases, tote bags, pillows, bags of snacks and you would not believe how many beer chests were sitting around.

There were people from Dallas, Ennis, Red Oak, Azle, Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Waco, Richardson, Crowley, Garland, Abbott, Seymour, Roanoak, Irving, Floresville and Mesquite, Texas. The busses (2 of them) arrived.

Mildred and her co-workers had our seats assigned and we were presented a cute Texas-shaped name tag with our name and a bluebonnet on it. We also got a priceless song book with oodles of Czech songs and it also contained our schedule plus all the events at the festival. We took off at 9 p.m. On bus No. 1 (the one I was on), Norbert Blazek put his accordian to work: wp opened „our song, books.

There was singing all the way to Oklahoma City. On Bus No. 2 David and Barbara Dybala and Helen Macik directed singing and skits. It seems they had a Cheska Chicken along. She was plucked clean and looked sorta naked. They all claim she was talented. She looked like a "Hnup" to me. We had a 2 hour lay over in Oklahoma City while the buses were being swept out and serviced.

We sure filled up the Bus Station. We drank coffee and lemonaid, etc. Here they assigned us a fresh bus driver.

These 2 men were so nice — at our beck and call for 3 days and 3 nights.

When we arrived at the 6 Days Inn Motel in Lincoln, it sure took some time and juggling to fit us all in. I had a roommate from Ft. Worth. Merle Bailey a career girl with stars in her eyes for Frank Kovar, also from Ft. Worth. Before the trip was over, she had a "proposal" of marriage. Believe me it wasn't easy. We all worked real hard on our batchelor Henry Gerlick from Abbott. He had a bunch of unattached ladies to choose from. I am inclined to believe Henry likes his beer, cigarettes and freedom — he wooed em all but nothing — Oh, well, there's always next year, Henry.

Saturday it was rainy — our bus took us on a tour of Lincoln — a pretty clean city. Calvin and a map were our tour guides. That night the Chervenkas celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary under the big top. We presented them with a gift and a dance solo. Barbara gave them some gag gifts. Everyone under the tent helped them celebrate.

Emil and Ruth Chmelar of Dallas flew in to join us and Bessie and Gilbert Kalich stopped for dancing — They are also from Dallas. They have relatives in Nebraska and were returning from a trip to Canada.

Sunday, we were back in the bus, early, heading for the Polka Mass again under the big top. We wore our Krojs. Sure makes you feel proud to be a Czech. Then came a delicious lunch and more dancing. At 3 p.m. — came time for the button accordian contest or Jamboree. We had our contestant from Texas entered, Norbert Blazek was the only one as far as we were concerned. We whooped and hollered and clapped for him. At 10 p.m. The Brass Band played a grand march for the Texas delegation. Then came sad farewells.

We had met so many nice people.

They had opened up their hall and hearts to us.

Real early Monday morning a sleepy, tired bunch loaded the 2 buses and headed for Wilbur, Neb. — where we were invited for breakfast; our guests were Mr. and Mrs. Schlise. As we pulled on to the Main St. in Wilbur, the radio station played polkas on loudspeakers. We had our picture taken. At the cafe a band greeted us. The Mayor of the town came to present us with a key to the city. We, in turn, made him an honorary Texan. Stuffed like the Christmas goose, we toured their lovely Czech Museum and more goodbyes to a bunch of friendly Czechs.

Back on the bus and down the road to Wichita, Kan. for lunch. On the road again, we each wrote a short biography — they were read aloud.

We got to know each other much better. Then came a floor show. Helen Samson was the choreographer. She had a skit — "The Best Little Bus From Texas". It seemed we, had

picked up two passengers — Portrayed by Mary Brown & Janie Nemec. It was hilarious! Calvin promised films. Well, we got 'em — 3 view masters. By now we were back in Oklahoma City — We bid our 2 favorite bus men goodbye as they dumped us off at a shopping center to kill 2 hours, while the buses were cleaned and serviced again. 2 new bus men picked us up and took us back to the Chervenkas Gypsy Camp. We arrived at 1 a.m., dog tired. This was a rewarding trip because we met so many new friends. I think we were a bit sad because we had planned and waited so long for the trip and here it was suddenly over. But we have hundreds of good and funny memories and lots of Kodak pictures to be developed.

FRANK (BERTHA) WINKLER, 79, of Route 1, Taylor (Rices Crossing Community) who died Wednesday evening July 28,1982, at John's Community Hospital after a short illness.

Sister Winkler was born 19 November 1902 at Corn Hill, Texas; she was the daughter of Ignac Kubacak and Johanna Moholnik. She married Frank J. Winkler 18 November 1920, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Galveston.

Rosary was recited Friday evening at 6:30 July 30th, at Condra Memorial Chapel.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Rev. Lonnie Urban, Rev. Leon Strieder and Seminarian George Henninger.

Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery under the direction of Condra Funeral Home.

Survivors include one son, Frank Winkler, Jr. of Taylor; three daughters, Mrs. Fred (Angelee) Gola and Mrs. Eugene (Martha) Jaecks, both of Rices Crossing and Mrs. Willie (Patsy) Schlickeisen of Bastrop; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Jim (Anna) Kubacak of Staton; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband October 31, 1973, also three daughters, one son, and two grandsons.

Pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons: Billie Turner, Jr., Mark Taylor, Freddy Gola, Jeff Taylor, Clifford Mucha, Frank Kaatz, Jr., Matthew Mucha and Gary Gola.

Sister Winkler was a member of St. Ann's Altar Society and of the SPJST Lodge No. 29 in Taylor.

RUDOLPH W. CERVENKA, of Waco, Texas who died August 28, 1982, at the age of 86.

Services were held Tuesday, August 31, 1982 at 1 p.m. at Wilkerson-Hatch Chapel. Chaplain Wendell A. Russell officiating. Burial took place in the SPJST Cemetery in Holland, Texas.

Brother Cervenka is survived by his wife Marie of Waco; four sons, Rudolph J. Cervenka of Rusk, Texas, William F. Cervenka of Waco, Robert L. Cervenka of Riesel, Texas and Edward J. Cervenka of Fairfax, Virginia; a half-sister, Amelia Bowman of Portland, Oregon; one brother, Victor Cervenka of Temple, Texas; a halfbrother, Gene Hruska of Henderson, Colorado; eight grandsons; two granddaughters and four greatgrandchildren.

He was a farmer most of his life.

He was a World War I veteran. He also had a book published as well as articles in newspapers and local historical journals.

Brother Rudolph was a member of SPJST for thirty-seven years and will be missed by his many friends.

FRANK H. PSENCIK who passed away September 10, 1982, in a Temple hospital at the age of 84 after a short illness.

Mr. Psencik was born in Austin County near Rosenberg and moved to the Cyclone community where he lived for more than 60 years. He was a farmer and a member of the Ocker Brethren Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Ocker; three children; three brothers; and eight sisters.

Survivors are two sons, Clerence Psencik of Burlington and Dr. Leroy Psencik of Austin; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, September 11, in the Ocker Brethren Church with the Rev. James Parks officiating. Burial was in the Ocker Brethren Cemetery.

He was born May 14, 1948 in Fort Worth, the son of Donald D. Sr. and Rose Steinman. August 18, 1978 he married Miss Celeste Losee of New York City, New York.

Brother Steinman attended St. Thomas Catholic School, was a graduate of W. E. Boswell High School and received his Bachelor of Science and Physical Education degree from North Texas State University.

He was employed at General Dynamics since 1978 and was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Hurst, Texas, the National Management Association, the American Sokol Organization and SPJST Lodge No. 154.

Surviving are his wife, Celeste Steinman; parents, Donald D. Sr. and Rose Steinman; brothers, Donald D. Steinman, Jr., Joseph Steinman; sisters, Mrs. Donna R. (Jerry) Parker, Mrs. Susan G. (James) Peaton, Miss Mary J. Steinman, Vicki R. Steinman, Lori K. Steinman, all of Fort Worth; grandparents, Mrs. Appa Steinman of Lebanon, Ohio, and the late Joe and Anna Milan; several aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.

Brother Malina was born March 12, 1913 at Hoch heim, De Witt County, Texas.

Recent Archer-Brown Wedding In the flowered surroundings of the Houston Rose Garden, Karleen Rae Archer and Ronnie Brown were joined in marriage May 22,1982. The classic double-ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Roland J. Chupik, the bride's cousin.

Mrs. Georgia Krustchinsky is the bride's mother and Mrs. Mary E. Brown is mother of the groom. Both fathers are since - deceased.

Karleen's grandparents are the late Alois and Anna Vaja of Houston.

Karleen, dressed in a traditional chantilly lace gown and matching hat, was given in marriage by Harold Y. Ponnish.

Bridesmaids, in silk floral print dresses and stylish parasols, were: Maid of Honor Linda L. Morris, Lolita E. Felder, Carol Kay Copeland, and Erika Archer, daughter of the bride.

Jessica Krustchinsky, Karleen's niece, served as flower girl.

All female attendants were adorned with matching flowers.

Ronnie's wedding party consisted of best man, H. Robert Hyde with fellow groomsmen David Fuqua, Mark Hammond, and James Archer III, son of the bride. Matthew Brown, the groom's son, was ring bearer.

Ken Khurt and Glen Duncan acted as ushers.

A plush reception, hosted at the White House Hotel, immediately

followed the ceremony. Darleen Duncan and Mr. & Mrs. Vaja served the refreshments while the bride's aunt, Vera Hartman, registered the guests.

A chauffeured limousine carried the newlyweds to Intercontinental Airport where they traveled to Caesar's Palace on Lake Tahoe to honeymoon.

Upon the return to Houston, Ronnie and Karleen resumed their private lives. Ronnie is Director of Photography for the Houston Oilers and Karleen is a Customer Service Representative for Airborne Freight Corporation.

The Bracewell family of Elgin Lodge 18 was proud to celebrate the CENTENNIAL BIRTHDAY of the Southside Meat Market, home of Elgin "hot guts" on July 31st. KVET had remote broadcast from the market until 1 p.m. with several prizes given away during the day.

The beginning of the Southside Market began by Wm. J. Moon, who sold the sausage from house-tohouse from the back of a wagon, moving to Central Street in Elgin in the late 1800's. After several owners

from early 1900 to 1940s, the business was then purchased in 1944

by Jerry Stach and Van Zimmerhanzel with partnership including Jerry's brother, Edwin Stach. The business was then purchased by Ernest and Rene Bracewell in 1968.

Ernest and Rene have two daughters, Mrs. Johnny (Debra) Williams of Buffalo, Texas; Brenda Bracewell of Brenham, Texas; and one son, Ernest Jr., of Elgin.

Kenneth Daughtry Joins Elgin Savings & Loan This last week, Ray Arbuckle, Jr., president, and the directors of Elgin Savings and Loan Assn., were proud to announce that Kenneth Daughtry had been elected to the position of vice president at Elgin Savings & Loan.

Kenneth Daughtry had been the assistant vice president and branch manager of University Savings, Elgin branch, since 1974. He is president of the Elgin School Board and the Hospital Authority, secretary of the Bastrop County Appraisal Board, member of the Elgin Chamber of Commerce, where he is a past president and director.

He is also a member of the Elgin Kiwanis Club, SPJST Lodge No. 18, and a member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

Kenneth and his wife, Beverly, the Elgin Courier editor, have four children, Shannon and Damon, students at the University of Texas, Kim Williams, employed at the Elgin Veterinary Clinic and Tammy Williams, a senior at Elgin High School, all members of the Elgin Lodge No. 18.

In Texas, if you don't speak English, you speak Spanish. And if you don't speak Spanish, it's more than likely that you speak Czech.

Believe it or not, Czech is the third most widely spoken language in Texas, and Karen von Kunes, professor of Czech at UT, will wholeheartedly attest to that. A native of Czechoslovakia, Ms. Von Kunes now teaches an incredible fourteen hours of Czech a week. From Monday through Thursday, Ms. von Kunes rarely stops teaching, lecturing, and administering language aid to ailing Czech students during her office hours. In fact, her teaching talents are in such great demand that her name has become synonymous with the success of the entire department.

If you doubted for a minute the number of students eagerly awaiting the chance to take Czech in order to learn about both the language and the culture, doubt no more. The university Czech club is thriving. Several of the members are of Czech descent; they see UT's Czech program as an enjoyable way to discover their roots. Others are enthralled by the prospect of visiting Prague, literally the heart of Europe and capitol of Czechoslovakia, in the summer. Still others are fascinated with the contributions Czechs make: world-famous pastries, festive costumes, and stunning cut glass.

To highlight these specialties, the club sponsors an annual Czech conference. This year, the conference plans to present films, lectures, and even "The Gingerbread Cottage," a play prepared by students of Flatonia High School.

The conference is a great place to meet others who are interested in Czechoslovakia and its people.

- SPJST (Editor's Note: The following letter was sent to Bro. Nick A. Morris with a copy sent to me; it is well-worth your time to read it, especially if you are of Czech descent.)

Dear Mr. Morris: During the 1960's and 1970's our American educational system underwent some radical changes. Certain educators and students demanded that only 'relevant' subjects be included in the curriculum and that prerequisite courses be abandoned.

A result of this philosophy is that many high school graduates today can barely read and write. We are now far enough removed from the 1960's to see that many of these ideas were shallow and imprudent.

Still another change made was the abandonment of foreign language requirements in many high schools and universities.

Those people who know only one language often argue that foreign

language study is impractical. Of course an English-speaking person in America will most likely never suffer any material loss through his ignorance of another language. But the beauty of knowing another language cannot be measured in dollars or cents or practical worth. I have yet to hear someone who speaks another language claim that his knowledge is useless.

A Czech proverb states that however many languages a person knows, he is that many different people. Study of a foreign language opens up a whole new world to an individual. It gives him a new perspective on life. It is a sobering experience to see that man's thoughts and words flow differently in another language. How many expressions, thoughts, and even works of literature are considered untranslatable to another language?

Unfortunately the issue of foreign language study is complicated by certain of our laws which require the Spanish language to be placed on an equal footing in certain situations with the English language. Among English-speaking Americans, most of whom are descendants of foreign immigrants, there is naturally resentment at this It often appears as if many Spanish-speakers refuse to learn English. The philosophy of these individuals runs counter to the idea expressed in our Czech proverb. We are talking about two completely unrelated issues in discussing the promotion of the Czech language in America and federal regulations which promote Spanish.

The Czech people have always appreciated the advantages of learning foreign languages. Many Czech immigrants knew German and perhaps another Slavic language besides Czech. Upon their arrival in America these Czech immigrants considered it a duty which accompanied the privilege of citizenship to learn the English language. Although some have halfseriously suggested that the numerous Czech of Texas demand that the Czech language receive equal rights with English and Spanish, it would be quite out of character with the nature of the Czech people to make such a demand. The Czech language will never be preserved in America by some law which requires the local post office to post in its lobby a Czech-language version of all its notices and proclamations. Rather the Czech language will be preserved by individuals who appreciate the beauty of the language and the insight which this knowledge brings.

Columnist Richard Morehead commented in a recent issue of The Dallas Morning News: "The better universities are showing renewed interest in requiring foreign language credits for high school graduates seeking higher education.

The Faculty Council of The University of Texas has recommended reinstating the twoyear foreign language requirement for applicants. Approval will be required from President Peter Flawn, who is trying to raise entrance requirements, and from the Board of Regents." We should take notice of this renewed interest in foreign language study among educators. This may possibly be an excellent opportunity to promote

the study of the Czech language.

Admittedly knowledge of the Czech language is no longer as important in Texas as it formerly was Less and less today we hear Czech, which was once the chief business and social language in many Texas communities. Many parents, in their rush to make Americans of their children, unfortunately lost sight of the advantages of passing on the language of their ancestors to their children. As time wore on these advantages became less apparent. Amid the hustle and bustle of American life, it was often easy to lose sight of the value of a knowledge of the Czech language, but we must nevertheless recognize that the Czech language is still preserved to a remarkable degree in our state. This is something that none of the other ethnic communities in Texas have done.

The Czechs have always expressed great love for their language and this trait can be seen today in the many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren of immigrants who still speak the language.

Texans of Czech descent must today reassess what the Czech language means to them. Czech can no longer be studied strictly for practical use. The truth is that too few of the younger people speak Czech, but this does not mean that the language should be forgotten.

The Czech language is too much a part of our heritage in Texas and too many traces of it remain for us to forget it. One of the main advantages that a study of the Czech language offers today is that it links us with our past We have much to be proud of in our Czech heritage and the Czech language will help us

better appreciate this heritage.

Knowledge of Czech provides us with great insight into the past and reveals much to us about who our ancestors were and correspondingly, who we are Some will deny this, but it is true that the past, is somehow a part of every human being. The passage of time cannot destroy the ties that bind us to our ancestors. For this reason we should respect the Czech language.

Texans of Czech descent should approach the Czech language with the attitude which their forefathers held: However many languages a person knows, he is that many different people. We should encourage foreign language study and in particular, the study of the Czech language.

The leadership of the Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (SPJST) is to be commended for the support which it has given Czech language programs in recent years.

This organization also deserves praise for retaining its original Czech name, rather than adopting an English name as some ethnic organizations have done in recent years (to their detriment). It is also noteworthy that this organization publishes its weekly newsletter under the name Vestnik. Through actions such as these the SPJST fosters pride in our Czech heritage.

Although some of these Czech elements appear meaningless and old-fashioned to some people, you can be certain that future generations will appreciate that you are preserving your heritage. If we take the "Czech" out of our Czech organizations we are left with something bland and meaningless.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.
