NOVEMBER 7, 1982 Lodge #172 SPJST 3609 Preston Road, Pasadena Texas The new home of Lodge #172 S.P.J.S.T. plans a day of festivities for the Grand Opening of this new lodge, Bar-B-Q, singing, dancing, other entertainment and door prizes.

The Lodge will be available to organizations and companies for parties, dances, seminars, conventions, luncheons, machinery and equipment shows, car shows, boat shows and etc.

The Lodge will also be available to individuals and schools for banquets, weddings, reunions, parties and dances.

The Lodge will have a seating capacity for 1000, with Kitchen and Bar facilities.

The Lodge will have a stage with its own sound system for small or large bands, skits and plays.

The Lodge dance floor will be of oak parquet, 80 feet x 90 feet, and can be used for skating parties.

Bookings for Hall Rentals for the year 1983 will begin in mid September 1982.

Ondrusek and Duchess Kristi Korenek, completed their roles and relinquished their titles to the incoming State Royalty in sincere fraternal spirit.

This year's State Royalty consists of King Darrin Banik with Duke Tommy Pavelka, who are the sons of Brother and Sister Albert Banik and Brother and Sister Gene Pavelka, all of Lodge 35, Elk in District III Mandy Mikulencak was crowned State Queen and her duchess is Kari Kovar. Their parents are Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mikulencak and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Kovar, all of Lodge 20, Granger of District II. Before our departure for home in West, live entertainment by the American Sunrise was in full swing to a capacity crowd. Lodge 177 deserves much gratitude for hosting the annual event, and we also appreciate the warm hospitality extended.

Ordinarily, you would think the editor is the first person who reads the paper which he edits. Your editor has to admit that he prepares each issue far ahead (2 weeks) of the date of publication; it has to be compiled on a Friday morning, in Temple and be taken, on the same day, in the evening, to Belton for publication; it is then taken to the publisher, in Temple, for distribution. Consequently, your editor does not receive his weekly issue until Wednesday morning most of the time.

In the same manner, most of the material, excluding editorials, letters and various reports which you find in your issue, were set and logged, pending publication, due to lack of space. Unfortunately, the numerous Expressions of Sympathy •are one type of material which had to be logged; however, we appreciate your patience and will try to publish them as space allows.

(We give letters from members and reports priority; sometimes we delay Youth Letters and Expressions of Sympathy.) *** Well, glory be! The pictures of the YAD held in Temple, August 22nd were sent to Guardian Photo, San Antonio, Monday, August 23rd and, finally, arrived in West, Monday, September 20th! The photo studio acknowledged receipt of the film August 25th and put a notation on the envelope that the pictures are needed in West, September 1st for the September 8th issue; they mailed them to the correct address: WEST, TX. 76691 dated September 10th.

Then our U.S. Post Office Department got into the act (not to be left out) and delivered them to Mart, Tx. from where they were returned September 18th and so-o-o we received them the 20th. So much for that! We will try to get as many YAD pictures as possible in this issue. SUPREME LODGE

From the President's Office SPJST Supreme Lodge To Meet In La Grange An Invitation To commemorate the 85th year of the founding of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), the Supreme Lodge will be meeting in the Fayette County Courthouse the morning of October 12th, 1982, starting at 9 a.m. The body will be meeting in the District Courtroom on the second floor, the same courtroom where the SPJST had its origins and beginnings — first with 26 Czech-Texans meeting there December 28, 1896, and again for their First Convention 20 June 1897. The first meeting consisted of delegates from Texas lodges belonging to a Czech fraternal whose home offices were in. Chicago at that time. That first meeting was for the purpose of organizing an independent and separate fraternal Society in Texas. After a short meeting, the representatives at that meeting elected a 3-man committee to draw up a charter for the new organization and set the First Convention for 20 June 1897. The 3man committee consisted of J. R. Kubena, Augustin Haidusek and Frank Cihal. (Haidusek later resigned from the committee and L. V. Vanek was appointed in his place).

At that convention the delegates decided that the official organizational date of the new Society would be set as July 1, 1897.

The October 12th meeting will be recessed shortly before noon, when the members of the Supreme Lodge will travel back to Temple to continue and complete their regular quarterly meeting.

Members from all over the state are invited to this special meeting, but members from area lodges in Fayette and Lavaca Counties are especially invited to sit in on the Supreme Lodge deliberations.

These include No. 1 in Fayetteville, 4 in Hallettsville, 19 in Velehrad, 38 in Sinithville, 44 in Industry, 51 in Ellinger, 67 in Schulenburg, 68 in Nelsonville, 106 in La Grange, and 179 in Warrenton. Local lodge secretaries of those lodges are being sent special invitations from the Home Office. Making a special appearance at the meeting will be former longtime Fayette County Clerk John Kubena, who is the son of one of the founders and organizers of the SPJST, and 155th District Court Judge Oliver Kitzman, Sr., of Hempstead.

The Home Office was located in Fayetteville from 1897 to 1953, when the delegates to a convention in Houston voted to locate the permanent headquarters in Temple, Texas. The late J. R. ,Kubena served

as the first secretary and administered the affairs of the Society out of his offices in Fayetteville, the last headquarters having been located in the present-day Chovanec Grocery in that city.

SL President Morris issued the following statement: "We are honored to have this opportunity to return to the very halls of the room and place where we had our humble beginnings 85 and 86 years ago. We appreciate the consideration by the Commissioners Court of Fayette County and Judge Kitzman in allowing us the use of their facilities for a few hours. Area SPJST members and other interested individuals are invited to attend and in a sense re-create the events of 85 years ago in the same location. will be an historic occasion."

SENATOR JOHN \A ILSON

Senator John Wilson Passes State Senator John Wilson of La Grange died after a long bout with lung cancer. Funeral services were held from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Grange on Wednesday, September 22nd. Senator Wilson was recently voted Assistant Presiding Officer of the State Senate, with Governor William Clements administering the oath of office in the presence of his Senate colleagues and his wife "Pinky". The Temple Daily Telegram carried a feature story and picture on its front page on that occasion.

The SPJST and the Fraternal Benefit System in Texas has lost a staunch friend and ally in Senator Wilson and he will be difficult to replace. He was both a personal friend and a legislative ally. SL President Morris attended the funeral services on behalf of the SPJST. Our sympathies to the bereaved widow and to his other relatives and multitude of friends.— NAM ** The following are quotations from various state officials, legislatorscolleagues of Senator Wilson: Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby: "I and the whole Senate mourn the passing of one of the most distinguished and beloved senators. John Wilson's character and ability made him one of the Senate's most respected members."

Gov. Bill Clements: "He was a close collaborator as well as a close friend. His loss will be deeply felt in the Texas state Senate and all of state government . . . I deeply admire the fortitude and perseverance that he displayed in his illness. I have never known anyone who accepted a terminal illness in the great spirit of faith that he did. He was a great Texan."

Sen. Grant Jones: "I've known John for several years and I consider his loss a great loss for the state. He was a very fine person and an outstanding member of the Legislature."

Former State Representative Jamie Clements of Temple: "He always did his homework. He never came to a committee meeting or before a state board unprepared."

Sen. Carl Parker: "Obviously in pain and discomfort, he stood and offered the `right-to-farm' bill which passed the Senate unanimously. I believe that to be a true profile in courage, which depicts a man dedicated to public service and to the people who elected this man to the Senate."

Sen. W. E. "Pete" Snelson: "I think he has added another chapter to `Profiles in Courage.' " State Rep. Dan Kubiak: `Sen. Wilson was one of the most courageous individuals that I have known in my lifetime and to the very end he committed every ounce of energy to serving his constituents and the people of the state of Texas.

"He was very, very instrumental in aiding all of agriculture, protecting the family farmer, water bills, bills affecting property taxes, marketing of Texas products.

"He didn't let this cancer bother him. Outwardly, he didn't let you know that it affected him inwardly ... He was an inspiration to all of us in the House and in the Senate."

Senator Wilson died Sunday, September 18th, in a Houston hospital. He was elected as a State Representative in 1973 and served with distinction in that capacity until 1981. He was elected to the State Senate in 1980. He was named president pro tem of the Texas Senate this past September 7th on his 43rd birthday. Senator Wilson was twice named among the top ten best representatives by Texas Monthly magazine.

John Thornton Wilson was born September 7, 1939 in San Antonio, son of Charlene (Thornton) Wilson and the late Colonel Cy Wilson. He was united in marriage with Patricia ("Pinky") Skotnik in West Columbia on August 31, 1963. A rancher, he lived most of his lifetime in the La Grange and West Point areas. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Charlene Wilson of La Grange, a sister, nephew, and a niece, all of Whittier, California.

Although Sen. Wilson was not a member of the SPJST, he was a strong believer in and supporter of fraternals. He lived and worked among people who were affiliated with several fraternal benefit Societies and he knew "what the score was". As President Amos Pavlik (KJT) said "We've lost a good friend. He knew us and supported what we're doing."

VII Director's Report District

Dear Readers:

It was a genuine pleasure to attend State Royalty Saturday, September 18, where the 1982-83 Youth king and queen were selected.

The gala affair was held at the Academy Lodge No 177 Home, and it was a lovely setting for the wellconducted event.

There were 12 district kings and queens competing for the State honors. They were accompanied by their selected duchesses and dukes and presented a lovely picture sitting on stage.

Top honors went to Mandy Mikulencak of Granger and Darrin Banik of Elk. They were most deserving, and I extend them my sincere congratulations. But I was very impressed by the good manners, good sportsmanship, and sincerity of all the contestants. It is hard to lose a contest, but never think you are a loser, dear young people! I firmly believe you each have a special place to fill on this earth. If honors such as king/queen,-hero, or star come to brighten the way, well and good. But this honor is not the ultimate goal in life; I hope you will look at this opportunity to represent your lodge and district as a time of growth and learning so that your life will count for those honors which will last.

I feel these young people deserve more support from the adults of our Society by their attendance at such functions. Maybe an earlier date

On our return trip we attended a Fall Outing for Hill Country Lodge No. 185, held at the Cibolo City Park. It was an afternoon of fun, fellowship, and good food, and my family and I appreciated the invitation. It was a nice way to bid summer farewell.

Brother Charles Schaundua conducted a short business meeting, at which the youth leader, Sister Sara Schaundua, reported that the youth will prepare Halloween treat bags to be given to a local nursing home in the name of the District VII Youth Club. This is a fine and noble project. They had a small but energetic club led by Noreen Jasek, president. It is obvious that these youth are receiving valuable training in conducting a business meeting, carrying out planned activities, and growing into future leaders of our SPJST. Keep up the good work, you members who live in the beautiful hill country of southcentral Texas! You are a valued part of District VII and the entire SPJST. Lodge No. 107 did their usual good job of hosting the District VII fall meeting Sunday, September 12th. Brother W. J. Marek conducted his first meeting as district president and did a commendable job. The youth were presented in a talent program and then attended a District VII youth meeting with Sister Maxine Pavliska, DYC, in charge. The ladies of Lodge No. 107 prepared a refreshment table with various cheeses, crackers, and a large variety of sweets for everyone's enjoyment.

Thank you, Lodge 107, for being such gracious hosts!

Dear Members: We district officers hope you are planning to attend our District V meeting at Lodge No. 88, 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Sunday, October 10th.

At the suggestion of Lodge No. 88 officers, we are planning a special treat instead of a dance after the meeting. This will be a free lunch of ham and various meats with all the trimmings served from 12:30 to 1:45 to all members attending the meeting. Pastry donations will really be appreciated by the Birthday Sisters.

Our lodge Choral Club and Czech Concert Orchestra will entertain us during the noon hour. You have heard them, so you know how delightful this will be.

No. 28 East Bernard Meeting

Lodge

Dear Members: Starting with the October meeting, the remaining three meetings for the year will be held on the first Sunday. The October meeting, on the 3rd, will be the last meeting under Daylight Savings Time. It will start at 2:30 p.m. and the November and December meetings will start at 2 p.m. Central Standard Time. The agenda will cover the usual reports and any other business needing attention. The "Gathering" will be held on schedule.

The September meeting was held the second Sunday, the 12th. The meeting was short with all reports accepted as given. During the reporting stage, it was reported that, at present, the lodge does not have any idea what its taxes will be on the building. This is due to the fact that there is some question as to what the tax base will be and what the building will be valued at.

All present were reminded about the October meeting and that the District VI meeting will be the second Sunday, the 10th, in Moravia.

Those lodge members who plan to go, were advised to be present in the October lodge meeting.

The door prize was won by Sister Lydia Sperlik. The meeting adjourned to the social "Gathering" at the rear of the hall where the food was.

The lodge, as always, furnished the liquid refreshments and some of the sandwiches. Sisters Brdecka, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval furnished enough to fill the table.

and other needed supplies. With these many timely supplies of coffee from various members, the lodge has not had to purchase any coffee all year, so far. Thanks to all for making these "Gatherings" a great success.

News

I have been back-sliding a little on my reporting. Things just have not seemed to come together. Maybe, it has been the heat. That is as good an excuse as any.

I missed the August 4th meeting and Valeria Motal took notes for me.

I thank her.

After the usual business was taken care of, Youth Leader Frances Motal gave a report on the YAD event held at Taiton July 19. Rodney Horelka was selected king; Jason Motal-duke. Beverly Horelka won first place in the Talent contest.

Jason Motal won first place in Science, Education and Constructed Items. Heather Spears won second place in Hobby Kits. Pam Donalson won second place in Handicrafts.

Eric Motal won 2nd and 3rd place in Science and Education. Pam Donalson, Heather Spears, Beverly Horelka, Jason and Eric Motal won third place in the Group Talent contest The group also won third place with their Scrapbook.

We congratulate our young people and wish that those who do not participate in the YAD would come to the meetings and join these young people who are accomplishing so much.

President Mike Ahlstrom gave a report on the Czech Festival that was held June 27th.

Dwayne Raska was voted in as a new member.

At the September 1st meeting, Jason Motal led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag which was followed by a moment of silence for our departed members. VicePresident Ella Arnold was absent.

Secretary Adele Donalson read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved.

Treasurer Evelyn Horelka read the treasurer's report and it was approved.

We had five new members voted into the lodge. Bryan, Kevin and Natalie Tolle. They are the grandchildren of Herman and Mary Raska.

Adolf Motal's brother, John Motal and John's son Michael were also voted in.

A discussion was held on what hall would be best and cheapest to rent for the next Czech Fest. The date of the Fest will be set at the next meeting. A bake sale was also discussed as a way to make extra money.

The youth of the YAD put on the skit they did at Taiton. It was called "It Takes a Jerk". Beverly Horelka did her pantomime called "Suppertime" in which she played Snoopy. It was delightful. The youth have been collecting aluminum cans and they had a picnic Saturday the 4th. They had hot dogs and also went swimming. They have adopted a red-eared turtle at the Zoo. The

children furnish money to feed the turtle.

Stefani Spears won the adult door prize and Eric Motal won the children's.

Adele Donalson and Stefani Spears furnished the refreshments.

Frances Motal brought some kolaches left from the Festival. All was delicious.

Before we close we want to say how glad we all are that Frank Rokyta's hand is doing better.

The next meeting will be October 6 at 8 p.m. at the Citizens National Bank. The YAD meets at 7:30 p.m. at the bank. All members are invited to join in the fellowship of the lodge.

Lodge Appoints Nominating Committee

Dear Members: September 12th, the meeting of Lodge 35 was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flagbearer Dawn Pavelka.

Visitors were Neal Hanna and Lillie Matus; come back, again.

Secretary Rosemarie Banik read the minutes of the August meeting, and Treasurer Eddie Ray Banik gave his report.

Sister Rosemarie gave the Youth Club report. Richard Burney won first place on his "snake catcher" at State YAD. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Martha Mladenka, Rosemarie Banik and Ervin Dieterich. The birthday cake was baked by Elizabeth Kubitza.

Committee reports were made by: Barbara Pavelka-kitchen, Henry Breitkreutz-refreshments, Patricia Fabienke-entertainment. Entertainment Chairman and Building Chairman Eugene Pavelka resigned from both jobs.

Then the body appointed a committee to serve as Entertainment Committee: namely, Albert Banik, Joe Tepe, Ernest Clemons, Henry Breitkreutz, Vernon Wood is going to finish out the year as building chairman.

Nominating Committee include Patricia Fabienke, Barbara Pavelka and Vernon Wood; so, if anyone asks you to take a job for 1983 be sure and say "yes". If you want a job and no one asks you, then go to them and tell them which one you want.

Thomas J. Jurecka's JT policy was converted to the adult department.

Door prizes were won by Mary Mann-adult, Timmy Pavelka-youth.

September 18 sixteen members of Lodge 35 went to State Royalty to see Darrin Banik become State King and Tommy Pavelka, State Duke. It was a wonderful evening. Tommy was a real little gentleman. The mother lodge can be proud of those two boys. Congratulations, Darrin and Tommy!

Our next meeting will be October 10th at 3 p.m. I sure hope to see you then; come out because we have good fellowship.

Waco Lodge Makes Charitable Donations Dear Members: SPJST Lodge 66 held its meeting Sunday, September 19, with President Nors conducting the meeting.

The flags were presented by Chris Owen and Larry Yates. The Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto were recited by the members.

President Nors asked everyone to remain standing for a moment of silence for Brother Rudolph Cervenka and Brandon Wood. May they rest in peace.

Our visitor was Mrs. Linda Johnson of Breckenridge, mother of Sister Ruby Orsag. We enjoyed your visit and hope you will come, again.

For correspondence, a thank-you note was read from Morris and Jayne Wood and family of condolences sent on the loss of their son, Brandon Wood.

Sister Engelke read a letter from March of Dimes and from Lodge 172, Pasadena, on the Grand Opening of their new lodge hall, November 7th.

Brother Gaidusek had Sister Engelke read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held Wednesday night, September 1st.

The lodge hall has been painted on the outside and it really looks nice; also some repairs had been made.

Brother Shilling gave the Entertainment Committee report. He thanked the committee for carrying on while he was in the hospital and could not attend. At the October meeting, they will have a Halloween Party for the youth club. They are asked to wear costumes which will be judged and prizes will be awarded. Also, the committee will serve orange drinks and chocolate cookies. The ladies are asked to bring sandwiches for the social, also goodie bags will be made for the youth After the meeting ice-cream and cake were served.

Sister Barbara Brem gave the youth club report. The club had a clothing drive and a cake walk at the Saturday night dance, that they made $100, which was very good.

The lodge scrapbook won second place at State YAD, also two youth members won first place on items entered: namely, Donna Stanislav and Chris Owen. The club will go to Six Flags in October and will take part in the Halloween Party at the October meeting.

New members accepted in September are: Bernadette Ann Feazell, Victor Fred Feazell, Madeline Webb (additional insurance), Patricia Holder (converted), Randall E. Nors (converted), Karen M. Brem and Joyce Steinhauser. Welcome to -Lodge No. 66!

Health Committee Report: Sister Polly Gaidusek had sent sympathy cards to Rudolph Cervenka family on the loss of husband and father, the Leslie Dungans (loss of her nephew), the Charlie Muellers (loss of his uncle), the Raymond Sheltons (loss of his father), the James Talleys (loss of her mother). May these loved ones rest in peace. Get-well cards were sent to Brother James Moore in the VA Hospital (hope he is OK), to Brother George Shilling who had been in the West Hospital (it was good to see Brother Shilling at the meeting), Brother James Pavlicek was also in the West Hospital (it was nice to see Brother James at the meeting; he also thanked everyone for the cards, calls and visits), to Brother Joe Janecka of Burleson; a card was also sent to him. We hope Brother Joe is feeling better.

Additional cards were sent to: Brother Johnnie Mensik of Ennis, to Brother Tim Urbanek who was in a Taylor hospital following a heart attack (he is at home now doing fine and we all wish him a very good recovery; we missed you Brother Tim and Sister Mary Lou). We have heard that little Justin Engelke has been ill. We hope he is OK. It was nice to see Brother Bill Cox back with us. Brother Daniel Nors also had surgery on his foot. It was good to see Brother Dan at the meeting.

sion of Sympathy for Brother Rudolph Cervenka who passed away August 28th. May he rest in peace.

Sister Engelke made a motion we send a memorial to the Disabled American Vets in memory of Brother Cervenka, which the family requested instead of flowers and also that we send a $20 memorial donation for our Security Guard Brandon Wood to an organization the family requests; the motions passed and carried.

Brother Silas Smith spoke on the banquet/seminar held for sales representatives in the District III area which was held in District III, September 15 at Sheraton Inn, which was well-attended. The meal was delicious and, as usual, the class was very educational and interesting. Thanks to Brother Gene McBride and Brother Pokladnik for a very nice evening.

Brother Otto Hanus told of the expansion of the Library/Archives /Museum. There are many new items and additions made. Some interesting and valuable items have been added. He asked that everyone come see what has been done.

Brother Silas also congratulated Brother Otto for an excellent job he has done, also Brother Smith asked the sales representatives to try to get more insurance written up.

Door prize winner was Brother Ray Orsag.

Birthday celebrants in September are: Brother Silas Smith, Brother Tony Glatter, Sister Mary Vrana, Sister Annie Hanus and Dillion Locke; "Happy Birthday" to each of you, the cake was brought by Janice Stanislay.

Thanks to the Entertainment Committee for the delicious icecream, it was very good on a hot day and, as usual, those delicious sweets by the ladies. Thanks to all of you!

Lodge Announces October 3rd Meeting Holland

Dear Members: Members of Lodge 80 met for their regular monthly meeting Sunday, September 12, at 2 p.m.

The meeting was called to order

by Vice President Terry Bertrand.

Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all members present. Our vice president asked the membership to remain standing for a moment in respect for our deceased members.

Secretary Glen Latham was asked to read the minutes of our August meeting. They were approved as read.

In correspondence, we had a letter from Lodge 172, Pasadena, inviting us to the Grand Opening of their new hall November 7, 1982; so you members keep this date in mind.

Speaking of the opening of a new SPJST lodge hall, it is always a gala occasion for the members of that lodge, so members of other lodges let's give them all the support we can and go there to be with them Sunday, November 7th.

We were glad to have, with us at the meeting, our president of our lodge Brother D. I. Bohac who is

slowly recovering from his recent illness and accident. It was nice to have you with us, Dan! On the sick list we have two of our fellow members in the hospital: namely, Robert (Bobby) Jones of Holland and Johnnie Pavlasek of Bartlett. Cards were sent to them by our Financial Secretary Sister Glenda Liles. We are wishing them a speedy recovery.

Door prize winners at our September meeting were: 1st—Rose Jochets, 2nd — Frank Pajestka, 3rd — Henry Balusek, 4th — Ligie Ivicic.

There was not much business to attend to and the meeting adjourned to meet again on the first Sunday, October 3rd. Members, come to the meeting because we need you to attend; we put out a few chairs in front of the podium and there is no one to occupy them, so be sure to attend!

As to the weather and crops in our area, the crops are just about all in except some of the cotton is still to be harvested. We need a good general rain for the farmers so they can get ready to plant the wheat crop. We have had some spotty rain over the area, but they were few.

Needville Lodge Makes Contributions Dear Members: Lodge No. 81 held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, September 14 at 7:30 p.m.

President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order and Sister Mary Werner led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.

Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence as a tribute to our two deceased members, Brother Marvin Buff and Brother Frank Fojtik. May they rest in peace.

All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting.

A card of thanks for our contribution to the Pasadena Lodge 172 was read and also we are all invited to their open house of their new hall, November 7th. We congratulate them for their great accomplishment.

Allene Zwahr gave the financial report and the treasurer's report was given by Willie Mae Kuykendal.

Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel gave the financial report and also the schedule of activities at the hall for the coming month. All of these reports were accepted as read.

Reported on the sick list were Sister Vlasta Holt and Sister Tillie Mikeska. We wish both of them a speedy recovery.

We welcome little Robert Milton Hartfiel as our new member.

Our Kitchen Committee purchased two new butcher knives, a knife sharpener and some spatulas.

A $50 donation was made to each of the following: Needville Volunteer Fire Department, Richmond State School and Muscular Dystrophy Foundation.

Refund checks were handed out and the recipient of the attendance prize was Brother Henry Hurta.

Activities Scheduled At Lodge 84, Dallas October

Dear Members: Our meeting last Monday was well-attended, maybe the cooler weather will make the difference.

Secretary Salac read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved.

Entertainment Chairman Ron Coker, in behalf of the lodge, thanked everyone for making the Czechfest the happy occasion it was; he also gave his monthly report.

Sunshine lady Sister Prasifka reported the following get-well cards were sent to: Brother Willie Zaedle, Brother Jerome Rejcek, Brother Joe Harasta, Brother Raymond Prachyl, Brother John Bubak and Brother George Reznik, Sympathy cards to: Sister Emily Elbert on the loss of her father, and Sister Mary L. Campion, loss of husband. Our sincere sympathy is expressed and may the departed rest in peace. Congratulation cards to : Brother Michael and Sister Jackie Kenny on the birth of a baby girl, also to the grandparents Brother Johnny and Sister Geraldine Becan; and Brother Joe and Sister Margaret Klecka are grandparents of a new baby boy.

House Committee Chairman Salac thanked Brother Paul Pokladnik for taking care of all the hall needs while he and Sister Evelyn went to Hawaii.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr announced the youth will meet September 26th and afterwards go to the White Rock Skate Rink; the youth is also busy rehearsing for the Czech Day at the State Fair.

Sister Coker gave her Special Committee report.

Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council announced donations to the Dallas Meal-on-Wheels, also to the Home for unwed mothers on Harlandale in Dallas at their meeting last Tuesday. The next meeting is October 28, at 7:30 p.m. hosted by the Woodman of the World at the Guardian Savings & Loan Bldg., on Jefferson Avenue; you are invited to attend.

The Czech Culture Society meets next Monday. Sister Bessie Petr reported plans for the Czech Day at the fair were near completion.

Brother Ben Jarma reported the softball team enjoyed their annual fishing trip; he also thanked the strong fellows responsible for getting the trophy case back into its place.

We have a transfer into our lodge: Sister Margaret Rice. New members are Stephanie Nicole Slicker, Jim Kohutek and Robert Steem.

Meeting, September 13, 1982 Lodge No. 88, Houston The meeting was called to order

by President Pflughaupt at 7:31 p.m.

Flagbearer Lynn Pflughaupt presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which, the members stood in silence and tribute to deceased members.

Brother Broz, on behalf of the Board and Membership, presented a

Fraternally, Rose Scott plaque to Brother Harley Cox for his 17 years as Entertainment Chairman of the lodge.

The minutes and all financial reports were read and approved.

Sister Vornsand announced that the Choral Club would perform at the lodge for the District V meeting, October 10th, and on Czech Day, October 24th.

Co-Chairman of the Board, Johnny Broz, reported on the actions of the Board at their meetings and explained the necessity to re-surface the parking lot. He also reported that bids were received to replace the filters and to modernize the swimming pool. Motions were made on each and both passed.

The Board approved a percentage donation of one Thursday night social proceeds to Jerry Lewis's kids.

Rules and Regulations Chairman Harry Rice asked that any proposed changes to our rules and regulations be signed and turned in by the October meeting. This committee will hold their first meeting in October.

District V President Sister Helmcamp announced the District V meeting at Lodge No. 88 on October

10th. A free lunch to members starting at 12:30; registration starting at 12; Lodge Concert Orchestra and Choral Club performing; Youth Program; meeting at 2:30 and cash prizes.

Free keg beer, donated by Roy-Bel Distributing, after the meeting.

Reporter on Benevolence Sister Kosut reported 364 hours and $268 in expense as charity work for August and 993 hours as volunteer work done by members at the lodge in July.

Members reported sick were Henry Kite, Mrs. Kadera, Birdie Pech, Annie Baethe, Tim Kostom and Mary Johnson.

Brother Souchek, Czech instructor, reported 15 instructors going to Prague in July. The meeting they attended was wonderful and very educational and they were appreciative of the brochures of SPJST and literature and maps of Texas and also they were interested in us keeping up the Czech language.

Secretary Clara Broz read a list of 38 applications for insurance, 1 social member, 1 transfer in and 1 transfer out and made a motion that they be accepted as read, seconded and carried.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 124 members present. "Happy Birthday" was sung to members having birthdays and a list of anniversaries was read. Door prize winners were Sisters Louise Kadlecek and Mary Kosut, and Brother Arnold Spencer with special Liberty Savings prize winner Sister Tillie Helmcamp.

Refreshment donors were Brother and Sister Larry Pflughaupt in honor of their anniversary. Two tickets to Country Music Jamboree, donated by the Golden Year Council, were won by Sister Betty Bravenec.

Our next monthly meeting will be held Monday, October 11th at 7:30 p.m.

107 Hosted District VII Meeting Lodge

The quantity of representatives at our District VII fall meeting at Floresville was scarce but the quality of those attending was great.

President William Marek held a well-organized meeting with reports from the various segments of our Society being brief and wellprepared. The discussions on some topics were logical and gave the committee members some feed-back to report to the officers of the Supreme Lodge. It was delightful to have Mr. and Mrs. Jaroslav Kleprlik visit with us; they are such ideal fraternalists.

Since the crowd was rather small, the fellowship that prevailed during the "cake and coffee" time was enjoyable. I can't neglect to mention the children's portion of the meeting. They performed to the gathering like real troupers; very nice youth clubbers. Keep up the spirit!

After the departure of our guests, Lodge No. 107 held its regular meeting.

President Bayer is back with us, still on crutches, but was able to be present. He called the meeting to order and Amanda Burleson led the Pledge.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer reported the children and adults alike enjoyed the District III outing at New Braunfels. They will have a representative in the tricycle race.

The adult lodge will have one in the race also. At their next meeting October 3, they will package peanuts for the festival. Peanut Brittle will be made, also.

Sherry Pfeil will be the SPJST representative at the Coronation and in the Parade.

Building a new portable stand for the sale of peanut products was a topic of discussion. President Bayer will have schedules for help in the peanut booth and also the beer booth.

This year the festival will be a 3day affair. The Coronation of the King and Queen with a Coronation Ball will be held Thursday night, October 7th; Friday there will be a Kiddie Parade football game and street dance; Saturday, the big parade, booths, races and another street dance. This should all add up to a very gala weekend. See you at Floresville at the Peanut Festival October 7th, 8th and 9th.

Anton and Mary Svoboda were celebrating their 43rd wedding anniversary on the 12th. Anton's name was drawn and he won the door prize for the month of September.

The District VII spring meeting will be held in Floresville. No date has been selected as yet. More details at a later date.

Our next meeting will be October 3,1982 at 4:30 p.m. Come earlier and help the youth club package peanuts.

THE PRESIDENT COMMENTS State Royalty — 1982 Dear Members: This year's speech presentations were some of the best that I had ever heard — they revealed depth and were thought-provoking. It demonstrates that our young people do not present anything "shallow" and meaningless. Their speeches were all well-researched and I commend all of them. We hope to have at least one picture of the royal court in this issue of the Vestnik.

Other pictures, including complimentary color photographs, will be furnished in about a month and these will be sent to all the participants, courtesy of the Youth Department and Supreme Lodge.

Among all the euphoria and regality of the occasion, I hesitate throwing in this one negative point, but what is fact is fact and cannot be changed. I am referring to the rather weak attendance by the general membership. If you had taken away the contestants, their immediate families, friends and relatives, there really wouldn't have been very many people present. The event was announced far enough in advance, so it should not have presented any difficulty with a person's personal schedule. I gueis it boils down to the fact that if you didn't have a child, grandchild, or close friend directly involved, there was little or no incentive for you to attend. I have always believed that generally speaking, people will do

what they WANT to do and if they don't want to do something, they have no trouble finding any number of excuses. One of the main reasons that the Miss SPJST Contest is being discontinued at our conventions is because of the pitiful attendance record of the delegates.

They seem to find other things to do the evening of the Miss SPJST Competition. Fifty percent or less of the delegates attended, so it was determined that the work, expense and frustrations associated with that event were not justified considering the small number of people who attended.

We have so much in our Youth Department that other Fraternal Societies do not have; some of them do not even have a Youth Program.

We are constantly being asked how we do what we do and while attempts have been made to emulate what we have, other organizations have generally not been as successful. One youth leader recently wrote: "Thank goodness for all the things the Youth Department and the SPJST has to offer our young people!"

The rewards, monetary and otherwise, were substantial. I think our Youth Program, as it has evolved down through the years, is a good one. I'm sure it still has some flaws because we who administer it are not perfect. The following statement of Goals and Purposes of the Youth Department that I had previously drafted was approved by the Supreme Lodge as the official statement of those goals and purposes and was drafted by me in response to wishes of the Corporate Planning Committee (CPC) that had been previously instituted by the Supreme Lodge to explore not only the Youth Department but other phases of our operation: 1. To instill and inculcate in our youth knowledge about the SPJST, how and why it came into existence, and the preferential treatment given to Fraternal Benefit Societies such as ours by the Federal Government; through proper indoctrination and information about the SPJST, cultivate a loyalty to the SPJST as an organization and a desire to remain in it, support it, and work to insure its continued progress and existence. Like any , level of American society, much depends on the young people of succeeding generations who will fill the ranks of adults when the time comes to do so.

2. Given the increasing social problems of our youth-oriented society, the SPJST, through its youth program, has endeavored, and will continue to endeavor, to occupy a proportionate amount of the youths' free and leisure time, thereby contributing to the nationwide goal of keeping our young people occupied, off the streets and out of trouble. We cannot do it all; we must work in concert with the schools, the churches, and the home.

We must, however, do our part in instilling good character traits in the youth that we have influence over and endeavor to make them better citizens of their area, state and nation.

3. To assist the youth with a wellrounded and developed educational, physical and social program.

4. To guide/lead the youth to grow in personal development by giving them opportunities to

express their opinions, thoughts and feelings.

5. Letting them display their creativeness, talent and knowledge, thus giving them experimental growth.

6. Give them new experiences, new and different responsibilities or challenges for personal growth. This will make one strive to do his best, improve his/her self-respect, attitude, values and beliefs.

I hope that the above statement and comments are taken in the same spirit in which they are intended — that of enlisting the general membership's support, cooperation, and participation. We will only be as strong as the single individual and by everyone contributing to our various programs, the program will remain strong and viable.

I have already sent in the dates for next year's State YADs, including Royalty, and they will be published for the next 360-odd days in the Youth Section. Next year's State YAD will be held at Temple High School, as has been the practice for the past several years and Royalty will be hosted by Lodge 18, Elgin. Make a mental (or written, if necessary) note about these two dates for next year. Of course, there will be a lot of other SPJST activities between now and then, so as active members of a fraternal family you should plan to participate and lend your support.

Finally, I am sorry I neglected to state last Saturday that the beautiful flowers that you saw (bouquet and single stem roses) were all fashioned and made by State Youth Director Jann Wilson. Except for the smell, one could scarcely tell the difference between the silk flowers and the real thing. Making these artificial flowers is truly a craft and Jann is good at it. Incidentally, the green plants were furnished courtesy of Temple Floral, Preston Pagel, owner. Thanks to Preston for this gesture.

Finally, the event was televised by a local TV station and the gentleman who took the footage had prepared about a minute and half with narration for Sunday evening's telecast. Unfortunately, the station management or someone cut the exposure to about 20 seconds with little or no audio and very little narration to accompany the footage.

RE-CAP OF STATE ROYALTY Dear Members: The 1982 youth year drew to a beautiful climax with the crowning of the State King and Queen at Lodge 177, Academy September 18.

Congratulations to Mandy Mikulencak, the new State Queen, and to Darrin Banik, our 1982 State King.

May the coming year be rich for you with new friends and experiences in the SPJST. It was a day to remember for all contestants, parents, relatives and friends in the audience. The seven young ladies and five young men who competed should be commen-

ded for a "Job well done". Each represented their districts and the SPJST in an outstanding fashion.

They are our leaders of tomorrow and listening to their speech presentations and expressions concerning our nation and the SPJST gives us all a renewed secure feeling.

Accompanying the queen and king contestants were seven duchesses and five dukes. These youngsters were not in competition but certainly expressed (with a keen sense of humor) that they were proud to represent their lodges and be a part of the Royal Court. They are our future state kings and queens and we are proud of each one of them. The 1982 State Duke is Tommy Pavelka of Lodge 35, West.

Kari Kovar is our 1982 State Duchess, of Lodge 20, Granger.

We would like to express our thanks to Lodge 177, Academy for hosting this event. After the competition we enjoyed a delicious barbeque supper catered by Taylor Cafe of Taylor, Texas. The meal was enjoyed by all and many compliments were heard throughout the evening.

To celebrate this occasion a Royalty Ball was held after the barbeque. President Morris and wife, Dorothy, led the Grand March followed by SYD Wilson, 1982 King and Queen and the entire 1982 Royal Court.

District II's Queen candidate was Mandy Mikulencak, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Mikulencak. Kari Kovar, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Donald Kovar, was the District II Duchess. Mandy was crowned the 1982-83 State Queen. The Mikulencaks and Kovars are all members of Lodge 20, Granger.

District III was represented by Theresa Dobecka, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Dobecka. Lanette Hykel served as her duchess.

Lanette is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Edward Hykel. They are all members of Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

Theresa placed 3rd in the queen competition.

District IV was represented by Kathy Carnahan, granddaughter of Mr. & Mrs. Otto Ptacek. Debbie Hrncirik served as her duchess. The Ptaceks and Kathy are members of Lodge 77, Bomarton. The Hrnciriks are members of Lodge 73, Seymour.

District V was represented by Debra Dobesh and Duchess Shirley Barcak. Debra is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Gene Dobesh and Shirley is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Gene Barcak. They are all members of Lodge 88, Houston.

District VI was represented by Queen Marjorie Treumer and Duchess Stephanie Roye. Marjorie is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Treumer and Stephanie is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bobby Roye.

EL CAMPO YOUTH PREPARE FOR OCTOBER EVENTS

COTTONWOOD HAS MANY STATE WINNERS Dear Members and Friends: The youth club of Ledge No. 6 held their meeting September 12th, with a good attendance.

Our club had their swimming party August 4th. They also combined it with a supper and refreshments, which was enjoyed by all.

Few of us went to the West Rest Home September 8th to present to the residents a program that they seemed to enjoy.

We had seven youth members attending Camp Val Verde. All of them reported a good time. During the first night Lodges 6 and 66 had the game night. I want to thank those of you who helped us with the games, which was a great help to me. Again, many thanks!

August 12th, a group of our young members were in the West Rodeo Parade. My thanks go to Brother Robert and Sister Lydia Dobecka for using their pickup in the parade.

State YAD was held August 22nd at Temple High School, and we had four youth entrants in Craft. They ,3`;

were Darrell Uptmor who won 3rd place in Constructed Items, Delores Dobecka placed 3rd in Pictorial Arts, Therese Dobecka received 3rd in Foods and 2nd in Home Arts, Karen Hykel was awarded 2nd place in Handicraft.

Junior of the Year recipient is Shirley Dobecka and Teenager of the Year was awarded to Darrell Uptmor.

Among the, top ten in points in the State are: Darrell Uptmor, Shirley Dobecka, Therese Dobecka and Lanette Hykel.

Westfest was held September 4th and 5th. The youth club had a booth and they sold kolache, strudels, canned items and cookbooks. We did quite well. I also wish to thank all of you who helped with kolache, booth food, Beseda dance, donated items and anything else you did. Thanks very much!

September 17th, Therese Dobecka was a queen nominee for West High School Homecoming and she was very pretty.

Royalty was held September 18 at Lodge 177, Academy. Our District III Queen Therese Dobecka placed third in the State competition. We all are very proud of you because you did real well. Congratulations to all the winners!

The youth club planned a Tupperware Party, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the youth room.

Birthday celebrants for September are Lillian Perez and Therese Dobecka. Tammi Dobecka brought the cake. Thank you October 10th, the youth clubbers are going to Six Flags Over Texas.

ACADEMY LODGE HOSTS STATE ROYALTY Dear Readers, The Academy SPJST Lodge No. 177 Youth Club held its monthly meeting September 8,1982.

At the District Youth Club meeting we discussed doing something charitable in the name of District VII. At the Lodge 107 Youth Club meeting, we discussed what we are going to do before Floresville Peanut Festival gets here; we are to stuff peanut bags and bag peanut brittle on October 3rd.
