Membership in a fraternal benefit society is more than just the keeping in force of a life insurance certificate. Membership can be more meaningful and more valuable to you only when you, yourself, contribute, to some extent, to the success of activities planned for the participation of the membership. As members, you are vital elements to the successful conduct of the activities undertaken within the society for the benefit of its members; you must assure its continued process and growth, so, in tern, the SPJST Society may be better able to support its goals. The mere keeping of your premium account in good order does not fulfill the obligations or responsibilities of membership in your lodge and your Society.

When speaking of such membership responsibilities, the editor is reminded of a poem which has remained anonymous. In fact, this poem reminds our members in our organization of one's participation in order to achieve aims and purposes. The poem: "The Always Faithful Few" When the meeting's called to order • And you look around the room You can always see some faces That from out the window loom.

They are always at the meeting And they stay until it's through.

The ones that I refer to Are the always faithful few.

They fill the vacant spaces Because they're always on the spot No matter what the weather is, Though it may be very hot, It might be dark and raining, But they are tried and true.

The•ones that I refer to Are the always faithful few.

There are a lot of worthy members Who will come when in the mood, And if everything's convenient, They can do a little good.

They're a factor in the Order And are necessary too But the ones you can depend on Are the always faithful few.

Were it not for these faithful With their shoulders to the wheel To keep the good work moving onward Without a halt or reel What would be the fate of our lodges That have so much to do?

They surely would go under But for the faithful few. *** One day Bill joined the lodge and paid his dues; but as regards to attendance, as time rolled around, his brothers found, they couldn't put dependence. He seemed to think if dues were paid, it filled his obligation; he seemed to miss, somehow, that this was .just the mere foundation.

When it came to doing work, he counted on the others, and, by the way, in this the editor will say, he has a lot of brothers. And when they asked for volunteers, to give some job attention, it wasn't Bill who said "I will"; I scarcely need to mention.

Well, as time moved on, Bill did not change; he also did some kicking. And then, alas! it came to pass, with sickness he was stricken, and as he lay in cruel pain, from which they couldn't free him, he would sob and sigh, and wonder, why, so few members came to see him.

Oh, when will people learn, lest they, themselves have striven to do their bit; when they are hit, help won't, to them, be given; it's just as true as true can be; we see it every minute—Life won't return what we don't earn but just what we put in it, especially toward our fellow man. *** Our Vestnik this issue carries a schedule, in the Youth Activity Calendar, for the two 1983 Annual State YAD s with the dates and places set. This was done by the Youth Department in order that our districts and lodges can plan their affairs so that they would NOT conflict with those two dates if possible. Please note the dates concerned. *** The situation with the pictures taken at the August 22nd State YAD is unchanged. This morning, September 17 (Friday), they still have not arrived at the post office in West!

Meeting Announcements Adjournment and Refreshments

District II Fall Meeting Lodge No. 187, Round Rock, was the gracious host to the District II fall meeting August 8, 1982.

Members were saddened to hear that President D. I. Bohac was not able to attend because of an accident. Vice President Ronnie Rieger chaired the meeting. The gathering of over 200 District II members witnessed the business of the session, hearing reports from various officers and representatives. Especially interesting were the reports from

Bro. Frank Klinkovsky concerning the youth activities — YAD, Royalty and camp. The youth adjourned to the Bowling Alley after the meeting. They really had a good-sized group. The adult members enjoyed refreshments, an evening meal and a dance which all contributed to a very successful fall meeting.

October 3rd Meeting for Lodge No. 6 Dear Readers, Lodge Cottonwood held

its meeting Sunday, September 12th at 3 p.m.

4/VESTNIK — Wednesday, September 22, 1982 The Pledge to the American flag was led by youth members Terry Hykel and Tammie Dobecka. Terry then led the membership in reciting the SPJST Pledge.

A moment of silence was held in memory of our departed Brother Robert Oswald Blaha.

Brother Eddie Hykel reported fifteen members present at the meeting.

Sister Barbara Hykel had the roll call of officers and all were present, except Reporter Peggy Dobecka.

President Dobecka called on Sister Hykel to read the minutes of the previous meeting. They were approved as read.

Correspondence was read from District III Treasurer Albert Banik about the District III dues to be paid.

A motion was made and seconded and passed by the membership to pay the dues.

An invitation also was read from the Pasadena Lodge No. 172 about their new lodge home Grand Opening and inviting everyone to the event.

Treasurer's report was given by Sister Perez. It was found to be in order. Sister Perez thanked the lodge for the get-well and birthday cards she received while in the hospital. It was nice to see her at the lodge. We missed her at Westfest.

Financial Secretary George Straten gave his report and also the hall chairman report. It was all in order.

A thank-you note from the Robert Blahas was also read.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported that some of the youth members presented a short program at the Rest Home September 8th. A swimming party was held August 4th. August 8th several youth members attended Camp Val Verde activities. They participated in the West Rodeo Parade August 12th.

Four of our youth members went to State YAD August 22nd with their crafts. Shirley Dobecka was named Junior of the Year; Darrell Uptmor, Teenager of the Year; and among the ten top youth members from Lodge 6 were: Darrell Uptmor, Therese Dobecka, Shirley Dobecka and Lanette Hykel. Sister Schuetz thanked all the youth members who worked at Westfest, danced, donated items, baked kolache and also thanked the parents who helped out. Sunday, October 10 the club will go to Six Flags. September 17 they will be going to the Homecoming game in West (which will be in the past when-this is printed). Therese Dobecka is one of the Queen nominees in her class. September 18 (which will also be another date in the past) wish Therese Dobecka the best of luck at State Royalty in Academy. She is representing District III. All Campbell labels are to be turned in for the contest. A Tupperware Party will be held September 24th.

The birthdays for the month are: Lillian Perez and Therese Dobecka.

Seaton eaton Lodge No. 47 Makes Donation Dear Members and Friends: President Jerry Pechal called the meeting to order Sunday, September 5 at 2 p.m. Mark Tepera and Michael Kortis, flagbearers, led the Pledge of Allegiance after which the members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Sister Frances Novosad. May her soul rest in peace.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and Sales Reps. and the minutes from the last meeting. She also read thank-you notes from Lee Marek and a thankyou note from the Frances Novosad family for the floral spray.

New members accepted into our membership were: Anton Joe Dohnalik, Deborah A. Dohnalik, James Richard Mucha, Marie Eunice Mucha, Vonda S. Mayfield and Lawrence W. Reynolds. We welcome all of these members and encourage them to come to our meetings and other activities.

Visitors at this meeting were Ann Balusek, Della Marinik (not Tanner as I reported in my last report.

We persuaded them to come to the meeting with us and they said they really enjoyed it.

After the meeting we went to the Belton Lake to cool off along with other members of our family. We welcome all of these visitors and hope you can come again, soon.

Jerry Pechal reported that they had a very good time at Burleson's Picnic. He also thanked Clarence and LaVerne Pechal for substituting for Charlie and Lee Marek as ticket chairman. A special thanks to Clarence Pechal for donating 4 bar stools to the hall.

All officers and chairpersons gave their reports. Dolores Skrabanek read the board minutes in the absence of Elmer Skrabanek.

Mary Ann Billeck, youth leader, reported that instead of*a social for September the youth will donate $50 to Jerry's Kids. The adults voted to also donate $100 to Jerry's Kids.

Also for Sunday, November 7, 1982 at the Dedication of the new SPJST Lodge 172 Ballroom in Pasadena on 3609 Preston Road. The Lodge 88 Choral Group, under the direction of Brother Tim Kostom, will perform with us on most of these occasions.

The orchestra is available for performances at other lodges, churches, civic organizations and other celebrations or festivals. The service is free compliments of Lodge 88, although a donation to the "band fund" is always welcome.

I would like to mention, with pride, the officers and other members of the orchestra who contribute so greatly to our success.

Brother Arnold Baca is assistant director, also directs and rehearses the orchestra on many occasions. In fact, he will direct the orchestra at the District V meeting because I will be out of town. He is supervisor of about 14 high school bands and is very busy at this time of the school year. Brother James Hutchison is president and keeps the orchestra tuned up. Sister Rose Sicner is secretary and takes care of the minutes and correspondence.

Brother John Dybala is treasurer; he does not have much to do.

Our musicians consist of high school band directors, high school musicians, music teachers, and some old-timers dating back to almost the beginning of the century. They are the real backbone of our orchestra.

Reported on the sick list were: Birdie Pech (we missed you); Lede Kadera who entered Heights Hospital for the third time and occupies Room No. 354; Annie Baethe is home from Heights Hospital where she spent several days; Frank Tymel entered Spring Branch Hospital Friday, August 10th to have extensive tests (good luck, Frank!); Tim Kostom was missed because he never misses a meeting, (but several days of back pains is very hard to live with); Mary Johnson, attending the meeting, felt ill and everyone was concerned (she got better and her son, Victor Janak, escorted her home); Henry Kite was

reported to be home and slowly recovering. To all of these ailing members, we wish a speedy recovery.

The usual "Happy Birthday" song rang out to all birthday celebrants for the month of September.

Wedding anniversaries were announced for: Odele and Agnes Pederson, 2 years; Larry (our lodge president and first lady) Dorothy Pflughaupt, 17 years; Jerry and Willie Mae Ermis, 27 years; Harley and Viola Cox, 33 years. After the meeting refreshments were donated

by Larry and Dorothy Pflughaupt.

At this meeting past Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox was presented with a beautiful "Honor Plaque" by Board Member Johnnie Broz for his devoted 18 years of faithful service as chairman on the ever-busy Entertainment Committee. A picture was taken with his family: daughter, Bonnie Sue and son-in-law, John Somyak; son, Donald Cox and his fiance, Miss Gina McCoy and, of course, Harley's devoted wife, Viola. I am sure the picture will appear in the Herald.

E. J. (Sly) Slanina was presented with an unusual gift for his 74th birthday, August 26, 1982; he flew to Arizona to be present at his granddaughter 2nd Lt. Charlotte Smith's graduating from the United States Air Force Training Command Air Base at Williams Air Force Base.

Charlotte, with pride, received the wings her father, Col. B. A. Smith, received at his graduation and her mother pinned the wings on her blouse. Among 63 graduates were five young ladies. 2nd Lt. Charlotte Smith will be assigned to Blythville Air Force at Blythville, Arkansas to fly the K.C. 135 Tanker. Her proud parents, Col. B. A. Smith and wife, Phyllis, including grandfather E. J. Slanina, whose birthday was next day, August 27th (age 74 and holding), said the family's celebration had to be postponed until next year for grandpa's 75th birthday on account of E. J. Slanina flying back to attend his brother-inlaw V. A. Mead's funeral services held August 28, 1982.

Grandparents Jean and Opal Bernier are thrilled with their 13month-old granddaughter, Mity Lynn, daughter of Lori Jean and son-in-Law, Mike Smith. August 6th she was one year old and toddles all over and her conversation besides Mama and Dada consists mostly of Mamo and Popo to the delight of Opal and Jean Bernier.

Kathy Trefell winged to Tampa, Florida to greet her second grandchild this month. Granddaughter Tiel Margerette Runnels made her grand entrance Saturday, September 11th at 4:30 a.m., weighing 7 lbs. and 4 ozs. The proud parents are Dusty and Michele Runnels. Congratulations!

So many of our members vacationing through California will be sorry to know that the 109-yearold cable car in San Francisco will make its last run September 22, 1982 and they will replace the 5-mile long track which is over 69 blocks of the city; it will take 2 years and some morning in June 1984, the familiar rattle of the underground cable will be heard again. The name of the city transit boss Richard Sklar caught my attention and I wonder if he is Czech (sounds like Czech)!

District V meeting is Sunday, October 10th. President Tillie Helmcamp, with District V Committee, went all out to make this a very nice sociable and productive meeting for District V; be sure and be on time!

The Blue Room special party will be Sunday, October 17 from 4 to 9 p.m., with cocktails, dinner and dance with music by the Knights of Dixie. You may reserve your tickets by calling 869-5767 and Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt will be glad to help you; the price is $10 per person and, in the Blue Room, Nat, the bartender, will be glad to assist you.

The annual Czech Day will take place Sunday, October 24th. Turkey dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. with entertainment by the Czech Concert Orchestra and Choral Group of Lodge 88. The parade of costumes will follow with a FREE dance from &to 9 p.m. with music by the Vrazels. Dear friends and members, will you kindly be generous, as always, and bring some of your special homebaked pastries for our guests to enjoy? The Birthday Club sisters will be in charge of the pastry table. This function is usually taken care of by Lillie Spies, our Birthday Club treasurer, with many who volunteer. On Czech Day, Lillie will be on her vacation and Florene Taake will take her place. Sister President Pearl Hanka graciously asks for pastry donations for both dates: October 10th and 24th.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! A group of 19 ventured to the city of fortunes, but somehow Lady Luck must have been out of Las Vegas during the four days and three nights; no heavy winnings were reported by any of the 19, but, all in all, they had a good time and no depression was shown on any of the faces. The Las Vegas Club was the headquarters for King and Helen Hegwood, Bill and Marciel Malak, her father, Willie Meiness, and sister and brother-in-law, Rosella and Dave Presswood, and Marvin Speckler; the others all stayed at the Four Queens; the rooms were very nice and clean and they served the best shrimp cocktails for $1 (more than I could eat for lunch). In our group were Steve and Estelle Kelly, Ed and Polly Klesel, Johnnie and Clara Broz, Kathy Beare, Lucille Reed, Tootsie Hunckle, Erwin Olexa and I. Another two couples just came back Monday before the monthly meeting: namely, Royal and Laura Warnasch, and John and Palmae Hilsher. The way they looked, I think they picked up what we left there or just had good luck. All in all, everyone had a swell time.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Birthday Club News Sister Pearl Hanka called the monthly meeting to order Wednesday, September 8th, at 11:20 a.m.

Sister Lillie Spies gave the treasurer's report which was very good and it was also accepted as read.

Sister Mary Kosut, our Sunshine reporter, gave her report. She sent sympathy cards to: Sisters Ida Hanka and Pearl Hanka. Birthday Cards were sent to: Sisters Tilly Bily, Pearl Hanka and Birdie Pech.

We were sorry to report that Sister Annie Baethe is in Heights Hospital. Sister Birdie Pech also wasn't feeling well enough to be at the meeting, and Sister Leddie Kadera isn't feeling well either. We hope for a speedy recovery to all these sisters.

It was so good to see Sister Minnie Bravenec and Sister Agnes Pederson back with us at the meeting. We missed both of you!

Thanks to Sister Alice Bily for the lovely box of cards from Czechoslovakia for the Birthday Club.

The Birthday Club sisters welcomed a new member, Sister Betty Kulhanek; we are glad to have her.

142 Announces October 3rd Meeting Lodge

President Mary Ann Kieschnick called our regular monthly meeting to order Thursday, September 9th, at 8:05 p.m.

The 28 members who were present, stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag, and remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Brother Monroe A. Koehn and Sister Violet Kiphen. May they rest in peace.

We are sorry to report that several of our good members are on the sick list this month: namely, Brother Alvin Melnar was in Heights Hospital, but as of now, he is at home (hope he continues to improve, we miss him around our lodge functions); our dear little Miss Amelia Linhart is confined to Rosewood Hospital where she is, undergoing therapy after surgery for her broken hip (we're so sorry to hear about this); also on the sick list are Olga Drisga, Frieda Johlke and Charlene Hoff.

Mr. and Mrs. William Boles of Conroe are the parents of a baby boy born June 29th and was named Bradley Wayne. He was welcomed home by a brother, Brian. Congratulations!

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tumis and Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Hermis were in Las Vegas to try their luck.

Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Tumis with their two sons, Brian and James, plus daughter, Celeste have just returned from a two-week vacation at Buffalo, New York and Niagara Falls. While visiting there, they visited with Mrs. Tumis (Rita's) sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Ray Withowski.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schleider have spent one week in Florida and they visited Disney World, also Kennedy Space Center.

At our meeting we again drew for a $50 member's attendance prize; sorry William Rummel was absent, try your luck again next month.

This month's $5 consolation prize went to Sister Henrietta Veselka.

The door prizes went to H. R. Hermis, Frieda Johlke, W. H. Hibbler and Rosie Schilhab.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by President Brother Jerry Milan.

After the opening of our meeting, the reports were read and all approved.

Brother Milan called attention to the District III Sales Representatives' meeting that was to be held at Lodge 84 in Dallas.

The annual Lodge 154 and Sokol Fort Worth Halloween 'Party were discussed; time and date will be in a later issue; also discussed was the Christmas Party for the Metroplex Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 to be held Sunday, December 5th, at the National Hall for members and their families. They hope to make this an annual event, with each lodge hosting. They would like for all lodges by their November meeting if they can have a count of how many can attend. Call the secretary of

your lodge and turn your count in. A dinner and dance is planned.

A letter was also read on the Grand Opening of Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena. We want to wish them success in their future.

The youth club held their meeting at the Eagle Mountain Lake. They reported the camp this summer was the best ever; seven members attended.

Brother Milan extended our congratulations to Brother Frank Kovar who will wed Sister Merel Bailey September 19, at the Greek Orthodox Church.

Anniversary congratulations to Brothers and Sisters: Donald and Bonnie Steinman, 15 years; Jerry and Henrietta Milan, 35 years; Emil and Sally Milan, 33 years; and Joe and Carrie Milan, 38 years. Dear Members and Friends: Greetings to everyone! I hope all of you had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to a cooler fall° season and lower electric bills. Of course, we are thankful for the cool air we were able to enjoy and, as far as the cost of it, well, we cannot take it with us when we die so we may as well enjoy air-conditioning while we can.

Our September meeting was held in our new hall and was wellattended. The hall isn't finished yet.

Some of us brought chairs from home to sit on and fans to keep us cool. Our new chairs are here but not unpacked except for a few. A lot of indoor work is getting near completion. Please come by and find out what you may do. There is still much work to do; some of our members have been putting in a lot of time and hard work. Many of the members have been helping out financially, too. There is a job for each and everyone of us before it can become accomplished.

Do you know someone who would make a donation in money or merchandise to Lodge 172 for the opening celebration. We plan to have an auction; many business places will make a doation, especially, if you let them know the donor will be announced. A basket of groceries from your grocer would be just fine, a couple of quarts of oil or some antifreeze or whatever from your garage, a certificate for a hairdo from your beauty slop, a football from a toy store and many other children's items. Many small items could also be used in the country store. Be sure you attach a note with the name of who donated it. The least we can do is to help advertise that business for their donation.

It would be nice to get money donations towards the purchase of bigger prizes to be given away, such as a bicycle would be nice to give away and, of course, many other items; some members are working on some of these. Hurry and think of other possibilities because our time will run out soon. Our opening date is November 7th, 1982. (Watch for details.) This is a trern don s project, requiring full dedication from the entire membership.

Many thanks to the members and many friends who responded with contributions to our lodge, especially many thank g to the lodges from near and far that made a contribution to help us. We appreciate your kind thoughtfulness. I hope we can do the same for you some day.

Here is another way we need all of you; new and old members alike. Our lodge has been approved for a booth space to the Family Festival sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Committee of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce held in the Strawberry Park at the Strawberry Pavilion in Pasadena Sunday, October 10th, 1982, from noon to 6 p.m. We will sell whole cakes, kolache, and coffee during that afternoon. Many of you already signed up for a cake or two; some of you said you would make kolache (please do). We are assigned to sell whole cakes but sell kolache and coffee as few or as many as we wish.

There will be ten food booths there and each one is to be different. That is the reason for assignment. Please call me if you have questions or need information at 472-3196.

We decided at the meeting last Wednesday to participate in this Festival to raise money to use for the many things we will need to put on for our Opening Celebration and to make more money with it. We are building a large hall and it will take everything we can do to help pay for it. We must all put our shoulders to the wheel and get with it and we will do it.

Lodge 179 Sets October 14th Meeting Dear Members and Guests: At the sound of the gavel President Harold Bergmann called the regular monthly meeting of September 9th to order with a large attendance.

Secretary Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and also the invitation from Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, inviting our members to their Grand Opening of their new lodge hall, November 7th.

It will be a great day of festivities including a barbecued meal.

Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both readings were accepted as given.

There was no report of the mortuary standing due to illness of our financial secretary. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

The committee reported a Kerrville bus has been chartered and tickets ordered for members to attend the Huntsville Rodeo for Sunday, October 10th; the bus will leave promptly at 11 a.m. from the Warrenton Store, so that we will arrive in ample time for the 2 p.m. performance. Therefore, everyone will have dinner on their own prior to leaving or carry a sack lunch because the bus will not stop for a noon meal. However, reservations have been made for a supper following the rodeo activities.

There was some discussion concerning the buying of bingo cards because it now has been legalized.

No definite decision has been reached.

Further plans have been made for our lodge to sponsor a variety shoot in October.

The Food Committee stated that the lodge will furnish cold cuts for the October 14th meeting at 8 p.m.; youth club will meet at 7:30 p.m.

Latest News Flash From Lodge. 183 Dear Members: Sunday, September 12th, sixteen officers and members attended the monthly meeting at the lodge.

All reports were given and approved. It was a very good meeting and many things were discussed.

Daniel Roznovsky had met with members from Lodges 92, 154 and 180 and a date has been set for the first joint Christmas Party for the four lodges to be December 5th at Lodge 92. Daniel will attend another meeting Monday, the 13th, to finalize all the details so there will be more on this in later newsletters.

All of you members of the four lodges mark your calendar!

Saturday, December 11th, Lodge 183 is planning a family dinner and party for all the members. Our lodge will be celebrating the fact that all of our bonds are paid-off and now all surplus funds will be going into the lodge's new Building Fund. Also, the lodge will be honoring the members who have worked so hard to accomplish so much in only two years. The lodge members would like to extend an invitation to our SL President Nick Morris and also our Editor Rudy Sefcik to attend

this great event, December 11th.

At Sunday's meeting all of the officers and members present who had bought bonds, joined in a bondburning celebration. HOORAY! The lodge is now off and running for bigger and better things.

There was a discussion about installing some ceiling fans to help the air-conditioning problem in the lodge but more research is needed and it will be discussed again at a later meeting.

Phill Boyle announced that he is running for president of Lodge 183 for 1983. Several of the members had asked him if he would run so now it is official; give him your support and help him in any way you can. All members who know him and have worked with him since he joined the lodge know what he has done for the lodge this last year. If there is anyone else who would like to be president or would like to have an office in the lodge, let them speak up because in the December meeting will be election of officers again.

Phill also gave the Building Committee report about the first meeting with the architect and about the type of building that was discussed. It was a 100,000-square foot 4-story office building with 20,000 square feet space for the lodge hall, so you see nothing is

Fraternally, No. 74 Makes Telethon Creola Wilcox Reporter Contributions -SPJSTOur regular monthly meeting was held August 16 at 7:30 p.m., with President James Wilcox presiding.

All reports by officers were read and approved.

Secretary Creola Wilcox read the correspondence. We received an invitation to the Grand Opening of Lodge 172, Pasadena, and a thankyou note from our youth club to the mother lodge for their moral and financial support on their trip to camp, State YAD and the Westfest.

It seems our youth club has really been busy this summer. They have had 16 different activities in August.

The winners at State YAD in Craft were: Matt West won 2nd place on his wind chimes; Travis McKenney received 2nd place on his butterfly drawing; Scott Listiak won 3rd place for his birdhouse. In Talent, Sherry Michka placed first (Individual Talent) in ages 10-12 on her jazz dance entitled "Bobbie Sue"; and the junior group placed first on their square dance number called "Sinokey and the Bandit." The dancers were: Scott McKenney, Jennifer West, Craig Stone, Kathy Listiak, Erick Driskell, Sherry Michka, Scott Listiak and Karen Daye.

Our editor, Mr. Rudy Sefcik, enjoyed the square dance so much, he asked them to appear at the Westfest September 5th. The youth club members and Lodge 74 members felt this was quite an honor. The dancers were so excited they learned three more dances in a week in order to perform a longer program. Sherry Michka danced and Jennifer West also twirled at Westfest.

Thirty-six members and six guests attended our September 2nd meeting. Lydia Dirx called the meeting to order promptly at 10:30.

After the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, we always offer a few moments of silence to remember our deceased.

Very thorough reports were given by our Secretary Mary Sebestik and Treasurer Vicki Kohn. Corresponding Secretary Rose Parma read Thank-You cards from the St. Paul Church of Christ for our donation to the Pavelka family and from Ann Skrabanek.

Committee reports were given as follows: Sunshine Committee Chairman sent a Get-Well card to Seaton Choral Club Helen Vrla, Sr., who is in St. Paul Hospital. Bessie Kalich thanked News Mary Stransky for the donation to Mirth, merriment and good fellow purchase cards. Gift chairman ship mixed with the lusty singing of reported gifts were taken to Carrie the Seaton Choral Club almost lifted Keberle and Lorraine Zdenek.

Birthday card chairman sent the roof off Star Hall Tuesday ,night greetings to Virginia Blatney, at the regular practice session.

Frankie Curry informed us that she will be moving soon to Oklahoma City so that she would be close by to her son. We will certainly miss her but will also be happy for her to be able to be near her family.

Hopefully, she will visit us often, especially our Christmas Party.

Several members made mention of the "Bohemia Restaurant" here in Dallas and how good the food is.

Marilyn Parma and Edward Fulbright will be married at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, September 11th. They will then live in Dallas.

Daryl Parma will marry Teresa Gainer October 9th in Akron, Ohio.

Marilyn and Daryl are Rose Ann and Eugene Parma's children. Congratulations to these two couples!

After our game, we enjoyed a very nice lunch prepared by our hostesses for September: Adell Vlk, Mildred Bartek, Evelyn Salac, Bertha Malik, Theresa Carper, Ella Bartos, Florence Peressenyi and Evelyn Henzen. Our lunch guests were: George Skotak, Julius Podhrasky, Wesley Tupy, Alvin Elsik, Bob Zvolanek and Vida Tyroch.

President Albert Brandesky called the meeting to order at 2:40 p.m.

All officers were present and the attendance was as usual in the 95 degree and sunny weather.

After the business was conducted, we had the pleasure to listen to a speech by Ms. Svatava Jacobson, professor Emeritus of the University of Texas. Ms. Jacobson is one of the more knowledgeable people in our State regarding the History of Texas Czechs. She is presently doing research on Folklore Costumes of Texas and plans to do some interviews, etc. while here. We are confident that Ms. Jacobson's address was very interesting and informative to our membership.

The meeting was planned in such a way as to allow her as much time as possible. It was an interesting address. It was my wish to have it recorded on my cassette tape, but

We did have a chance to see one of the Czech costumes; it was demonstrated by charming Jinge Malik, granddaughter of Mrs. Ella Malik from Robstown. (Mr. Joe and Mrs. Ella Malik were in Czechoslovakia about two years ago to celebrate their golden anniversary; they bought the costume while there.)

After the meeting and address, the customary covered dish meal was served. The dance started at 6 p.m. with music by "The Starlights" of Shiner/Yoakum area and played until 9 p.m. . Some persons expected to hear a Czech speech; no luck! May be next time?! I hope Ms. Jacobson took, with her to her home, a nice memo from Corpus Christi. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes of the July meeting and all financial reports were read and approved.

A new member was added to our list; we welcome you in our ranks because fresh help is needed.

Reported on the sick list were Sister Venie Kucera, Sister Annie Sacky and Brother Frank Sijansky.

The Sunshine Committee and the membership signed get-well cards to be mailed to them. We hope all of you are improving.

We have new members: Sam R. Peal, Suze Peal, Cora A. Barela and Robert Morehouse. We are hoping they will be active members. (Sam is my dear grandson who was born August 23, 1947 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He attended the gym classes in the old Sokol Hall since he learned how to walk. In 1966 he graduated from W.B. Ray High School and has been attending A & I College in Kingsville for the past four years.

Selection of the students to receive a scholarship was made by the Texas A & I Faculty members, with the assistance of Central Power and Light Company; there were six South Texas students who won CPL Scholarships and Sam was one of them who was awarded an Electrical Engineering Grant for $600. He married in 1968 and served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1971. His dear wife, Suze, also graduated from A &I College in Kingsville in Electrical Engineering at the same time. For the past 10 years they lived in Houston; July 4th, 1982 they moved back to Corpus Christi. They have two lovely sons, Shawn (13 years) and Scott (11). They are hardworking students.)

Serving as Sokol officers for 1982 to 1983 are: President-Eugene Lehnert, Vice President-Roy H. Peal,. Recording Secretary-Helen Pavelka, Financial Secretary-Ann Pitaway, Treasurer-H. M. (Mack) Munson; and Honorary Presidents

are Frank Veselka and Frank C. Sacky. Honorary Historian is John Stasa.

The gym director will be announced later. Others serving are: Jerry Sijansky — educational director, Jill Sijansky — assistant educational director.

Delegate to the Southern District annual meeting will be Jerry Sijansky. First alternate is Carrie Veselka and second alternate is Doreen Munson.

Dear Readers: I was invited by Mr. Bill and Mrs. Annie Spencer, who are members of the Czech Heritage Society of Southern Texas, to attend the meeting August 7, 1982 held by the Czech Singers' Club at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Spencer, at 5 p.m.

It is always a pleasure to attend a get-together and social. There were about 20 persons invited to the supper which was enjoyed by all.

After the meal there was a rehearsal.

It was a pleasure to have a conversation with Ms. Svatava Jacobson, professor Emeritus of University of Texas.. She spent the Saturday afternoon and part of the night at the lovely Spencer home. (Bill's room walls are covered with many certificates, medals, and guns on behalf of his services while in the U.S. Navy. Annie's room is filled with pictures, kitchen antiques, and many other articles a little museum!

My sincere thanks to you dear Bill and Annie for your friendship.

Ms. Jacobson and I enjoyed singing with this fine group of singers and added to it as participants.

In old business we discussed final plans to go see the Prison Rodeo in Huntsville. We will meet at the Warrenton Store and leave there on a chartered bus to Huntsville, at 11 a.m.

Under new business we discussed going to see "Six Pack" at the Cozy Theatre, Sunday' evening. We will meet at the Warrenton Store at 6:30 p.m. We also talked about going to see a Dallas Cowboys football game, but we decided to wait until next meeting to discuss more about it.

Dear Readers, Our youth club of Cottonwood held its meeting Sunday, September 12th.

All the officers presented their reports.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz gave her report on Westfest. She also thanked all the youth and parents who in any way helped and donated items for the Westfest booth. It was a lot of work to prepare everything. It sold out much faster than it took to make it.

This will help us to go to Six Flags Sunday, October 10th.

The youth Club also had planned to attend a "Homecoming" game Friday, September 17th; as Therese Dobecka is one of the, Queen nominees. She also plans to represent District III in the State Royalty Saturday, September 18th.

We all wished her the best of luck.

The library was destroyed when the entire school burned last December.

The youth presented the $1.200 check to Dr. Paul Willis, School Superintendent at the called school board meeting held the last week in August.

We enjoy doing things to help our community, having fun on weekly get-togethers and we really appreciate our Youth Leader Pat Young for planning fun things for us.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 155, Austin, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy, in behalf of our membership, to the family of our departed sister BERTHA MACHU, who passed away July 9th, 1982 at St. David's Hospital in Austin.

Funeral services were conducted

by Cook-Walden Funeral Home with interment at the Capitol Memorial Park cemetery in Austin.

Sister Machu was born in Czechoslovakia October 20, 1901 and was a vocational nurse. Her husband preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Emily (Emy) Greggs and Lillie Mae Hawkins, both of Austin; two sisters Angelina Peschall of Austin, and Agnes Lambert of San Antonio; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Sister Machu received her 50-year membership pin from the Supreme Lodge awarded at a special ceremony held in 1980 at our Lodge No. 155 of which she was a devoted member for eight years.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 3, 1982, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Damon with Msgr. Gilbert Pekar, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Garmany and Carden Funeral Home in charge.

Brother Hanka was a member of Sokol, SPJST Lodge 88, Knights of Columbus, and was formerly an officer of Slavonic Mutual Insurance. He was a veteran of WW II where he attained the rank of Major.

Survivors include his mother, Ida Hanka; wife, May Anthony Hanka; sons, Bruce, Glenn, and Brett Hanka; granddaughters, Jeanette, Erin, and Kristin Hanka.

Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 1982, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church with Rev. Rodney Poythoress, celebrant.

Interment followed at Brookside Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers were Attorney Lud Kucera, George and Roland Hanka.

The bridge graduated from Hallettsville High School in 1977 as valedictorian of her class. She is a 1979 honor graduate of Victoria College and a 1982 graduate of the University of Houston Victoria Campus, where she received a B.S. degree in business administration.

The groom, a 1978 graduate of Stroman High School, attended Victoria College. He is employed by Trinity Testing and Inspection Company in Victoria as an engineering technician.

Her full organza skirt fell from a slightly raised waistline into a flowing chapel train, embellished along the edge and back with full tiers of organza, lace and pearls.

The bride's hat of Chantilly and Alencon laces was enhanced with a small brim, edged in crystal-pleated chiffon with a chiffon rosette, and held a finger-tip length drift of imported illusion.

She carried a bouquet of apricot silk roses entwined with baby's breath and trailing apricot silk ribbons tied in love knots.

Peggy Vess and Lenora Marsh were soloists; Dinellee Frankland was pianist.

The bride, employed by Minyard Food Stores (Distribution Center), is a 1978 graduate of Parkwood High School, Joplin, Mo. Kercho, employed in K Mart's camera department in Euless, is a 1978 L.D. Bell High School graduate and a senior at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Paul Kercho holds the following honors: Alpha Chi—Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma-Business Honor Society (Vice President).

He is a management major at UTA and is past President of the SPJST Lodge 92 Youth Club.

Continuation Of In And Out Of London

By Betty Jurica March 18th we were on our way to see the Shakespeare Country, at Stratford-upon-Avon to visit the Anne Hathaway's Cottage and Shakespeare's birthplace.

Shakespeare's Country, with Stratford-upon-Avon as its Centre, lies at the very heart of England.

Stratford is Warwickshire's oldest market town, situated roughly

midway along the course of the Avon. From its delightful river setting, it preserves character and atmosphere, its streets and buildings displaying a remarkable continuity with its interesting past.

William Shakespeare, the greatest dramatic genius of the Englishspeaking people, was born in 1564 and died here in 1616. The poet's birthplace, with other buildings with his family, are preserved by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. He is buried in Holy Trinity Church at Stratford-upon-Avon.

The house in Henley Street is where Shakespeare was born and spent his early years there. The house is a half-timbered building of a type common in Elizabethan Stratford. In Shakespeare's time it consisted of two separate parts: the family home and an adjoining shop or warehouse used by the poet's father, John Shakespeare, in connection with his trade as a glover and wool dealer.

Like most of the houses of Stratford-upon-Avon, it was a product of local materials: timber from the nearby Forest of Arden and bluegrey stone from Wilmcote, the village where Shakespeare's mother lived as a girl. The property has undergone some restoration, its essential features remain unchanged. It was an interesting tour of the house in which he lived.

The living room has timber-framed walls and a- raftered ceiling, made of English Oak. The fireplace is unusual in its combination of early brick and stone, and the old broken stone floor is believed to be original.

Above the living room is the poet's birthroom, with a low, uneven ceiling and a quaint fireplace of stone and brick.

The River Avon is Stratford's greatest natural asset; while second only in importance in contributing to the prosperity of the town is the medieval bridge spanning the river.

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre is located on the river, surrounded by beautiful willows.

Our next stop was at Anne Hathaway's Cottage. Anne married William Shakespeare November 27, 1582. On that date a license was issued for his marriage to Anne Hathaway, the daughter of a farmer who lived about half a mile west of Stratford at Shottery. At the time, William was 18 and Anne 26.

The "Cottage," which was originally a spacious farmhouse, dates mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries, but inside may be seen a pair of curved oak timbers or "crucks," pegged together at the top, which was one of the earliest constructional methods used in house building in this country.

In the living room there is a hooded fireplace, grate, and andirons typical of the times. The cottage is furnished much as it is thought to have been during the poet's courtship with warming pans hanging on either side of the fireplace, and with chinaware and candlesticks displayed on the mantel. The walls are made of unplastered bricks. In most houses, there was a baking oven set in the wall close to the fireplace.

The interior of the cottage abounds in interesting architectural features. The principal rooms on the ground floor comprise the living room, on the "halls" as it was called, with its original paneling and open

chimney carver; the kitchen with its old bake-oven still intact; and the dairy or buttery, upstairs are six rooms; all formerly used as bedrooms or storerooms, running the whole length of the building. The famous Hathaway bedstead stands in the principal chamber at the top of the stairs.

The property belonged to descendants of the Hathaway family as late as 1892, when it was bought by, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust for preservation. Most of the present furnishings of the cottage actually belonged to the Hathaways and their descendants.

The lovely old-fashioned garden contains a fascinating medly of trees, shrubs, flowers and herbs and an adjoining orchard.

Anne Hathaway's Cottage, the home of Shakespeare's wife before her, marriage, is one of England's most famous buildings. William Shakespeare courted Anne for a short period and proposed to her in the living room of the cottage on a bench near the fireplace. The bench is carved out of wood and is still there in the same location.

At this time it was noon and we all had a good luncheon at one of the nicer restaurants. The menus mostly consisted of fish or ham, soup, vegetables and a dessert; one must ask the waitress if you want water with your meal, because it is never served. The tourists in our group usually chose wine, beer or Pepsi Cola.

From here we traveled to Oxford, it is the home of the oldest university in England. The town is more than 1,000 years old and Oxford University was founded in the 1100's. Town's people and students are called oxonians. Oxford lies about 50 miles northeast of London on River Thames. But no genuine records of the existence of a school at this place before 1117.

During 1167 or 1168 foreign students were expelled from the University of Paris when relations between England and France were broken.

This early school at Oxford was a guild, an organization of tradesmen whose chief purpose was to control teaching by limiting the number of teachers.

There are now thirty-four colleges within Oxford University. Naming a few of the colleges are Oriel, it was founded by Edward II; University College, the gateway to the Redcliffe Quadrangle; Queen's College, founded in 1341; Merton College, was the first college to achieve true Collegiate existence; Magdalen College, founded by Wayneflete, Bishop of Winchester, etc.

The student, when he registers, is assigned a tutor who guides and advises him through his Collegiate Career. The tutor outlines the things the student is expected to know, the examinations he must pass and the reading he must do.

University instruction is almost entirely by lecture. There are no recitations or quizzes such as American Colleges have. Notices of the lectures are posted, but attendance is not compulsory. It is the duty of the student, guided by his tutor, to attend those that are related to his studies.

The university, and not the colleges, conducts the examinations and grants the degrees. There are

two types of bachelor degrees: Pass and honors. The honors degree requires more severe examinations, and may he followed by a Master of Arts degree. Everyone who has ever been to Oxford, either as an undergraduate or simply as a visitor walking around its medieval colleges, all that, if remembered at all, is overlaid with a host of personal memories.

March 19th was spent shopping on Oxford Street, the busiest shopping street in London. It runs between Marble Arch to the west and St. Giles Circus to the east. This one street has more department stores and shoe shops than any other street in London. It is not an exclusive shopping area like Knightsbridge or Bond Street, but it is the most popular. Millions of people come here from outside London and from other countries. It has become necessary to widen the pedestrian walks and to ban private vehicles from the street during business hours.

Frances Faye and I got an early start in the morning (9 a.m.) to begin our shopping as this was our last day. We had no idea where this "Oxford Street" was. We got information from the desk clerk at our hotel; we were told take Bus "8", and that we would get there. We started out walking a few blocks and came to a very busy intersection, we found out that we were on the famous "Oxford Street." There weren't many people on the street at this time, so we began our shopping.

First stop was a book store, bought a few books, they were heavy to carry so we limited our shopping here. We wandered throughout different department stores and small malls, just looking and comparing prices.

We bought "T" shirts, scarfs, dolls, playing cards, pictures, wedgewood, and shopped at Woolworth's. We had lunch at Huckleberry's, here we had fish N' chips, Pepsi and fried pies. It was a very nice place, eating area was in the basement. The top ten Oxford Street stores are: Mark and Spencer, John Lewis, Selfridges, Debenhams, D. H. Evans, C & C Modes, Mothercare, Lilley and Skinner, Sacha and Sheepskin Shop; all ofi these stores were well stocked with good merchandise at reasonable prices. (Before we left Corpus Christi, the travel agency advised us not to buy any clothes in London because their clothing wasn't made of good quality, but I found them to be equal to our prices and the quality was good.) Our last stop that afternoon was at a large store where Wedgewood was sold.

This was not a discount store, and the Wedgewood was beautiful in assorted colors. It was a hard decision, what to purchase for the family. We bought several pieces of Wedgewood, one in particular I liked is the Royal Family Wedding.

We returned to the hotel at 4 p.m. and began packing our suitcases, which were filled to capacity. We had coffee served in our room and had a snack of good cream-filled pastry. The granddaughter took a nap because that night we had plans to attend a banquet at Hatfield House.

We left for "Hatfield House" at 8 p.m. (It was raining at that time.) We went through North London and the Hertfordshire countryside to Hatfield. The Elizabethan Banquet took place in the 15th Century Old

Palace in the grounds of Hatfield House, where Queen Elizabeth I heard of her accession to the throne and called her first Council of State, which proclaimed the beginning of the Elizabethan era.

During the evening we were entertained in traditional style with minstrels and ballad singers, all in full Elizabethan regalia. The menu consisted of soup, egg, fish and rice wrapped in pastry, breast of chicken, basted with spice and honey, compote of cherries in Brandy sauce, cheese, coffee, wine and meade. Winches serve all the food.

The entertainment was lively, the Queen and her ladies were all dressed in the Elizabethan style.

The minstrels and the singers went throughout the aisles; they talked to everyone, everyone sang, it was an evening well spent. No one applauds (as is our custom), there we had to hit the table with our fists, and was that a noisy group! We arrived back in London at 12 p.m. Frances Faye decided that we would walk back to our hotel. We walked and walked, but we never found the hotel, we had to flag down a taxi; we found out then that, after all, we were close to our destination. It was very cold that night and Frances did not have her coat on, therefore, she was shivering and was glad to ride the taxi.

March 20th, we got up early (6 a.m.) repacked some of our bags and had everything ready by 7 a.m. (breakfast time). At 8:15 the coach arrived at our hotel. (There was another family from Corpus Christi in the same hotel.) We arrived at the airport at 10 a.m. The airport was very crowded-standing room only.

We found a luggage buggy and loaded it up. Now we got in a long line of people, all trying to get on the Texas Class Flight. We stood in line for 2 hours before we got to check in our luggage.

We left London at 12:30 p.m.

Guess where we had our seats assigned? Oh, yes, the last one in the back. It was an eleven-hour flight to Dallas. When we left London, we flew over Iceland, Greenland, North Canada; Deluth, Minnesota; Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Oklahoma City and Dallas. I enjoyed the flight; I would look out the window and look down 33,000 feet and would see the ice and snow. The mountains were beautiful, all covered with snow. The frozen tundra looked bare, and I was just thinking how anyone could live there and make a living. I imagine there are Eskimos who live there and are used to the snow.

Upon arriving in Dallas, it was sultry and it was warm, but give me Texas anytime. London is beautiful but too crowded and, at that time, it was cold and rainy every day. We enjoyed every minute of our trip, but few extra days would have been better because we didn't get to see many places because our time was limited.

Several of my friends are waiting for me to write, about this trip. Our granddaughter will be in University of Texas this*week and I sure will miss her, because she is the first of the grandchildren to go to college.

I've had her, for many years; now it's time for her to go to further her education in Computer Science.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
