The 1982 Southern District, American Sokol Organization Beginners Instructors Course was hosted by Sokol Zizka, Dallas, Texas, at the Sokol Athletic Center in Dallas.

Twenty-one students attended

Sokol Fort Worth. He was assisted

by Sis. Sharon James of Sokol Baltimore, Maryland. All phases of the Sokol program were taught.

Guest speakers were brothers and sisters from various units. Special

the course, which began August 1st, and ended with graduation exercises Saturday, August 7th. Five units of the Southern District were represented.

The head instructor-director of the course was Bro. Rome Milan,

topics were judging, history, fundraising, etc.

Perturbed and disgusted would be the proper words to describe your editor's frame of mind today, Friday, September 10. Reason? — The day after State YAD (August 23rd) I called the company that does our developing of pictures and they were closed for vacation, so I took them to the drug store to send them off. They put on the order: "Must have these by Wednesday September 1" so that they would appear in last week's September 8 issue. They did not arrive. This week, the druggist called them twice and this morning, Sept. 10, they still HAVE NOT ARRIVED! *** Are you educated? A university professor is reported to have told his students that he would consider them educated, in the best sense of the word, when they could truthfully answer "yes" to Has your education given you sympathy with all good causes? Has it made you a protecting brother to the weak? Have you learned how to make friends and keep them? Can you look an honest individual straight in the eye? Do you see anything to love in a little child? Are you good for anything yourself? Can you be happy alone, with only your thoughts for company? Can you look into a mud puddle, but the wayside and see anything in the puddle but mud? ** Youth is not entirely a time of life, it is a state of mind. It is not wholly a matter of ripe cheeks, red lips, and supple knees, It is a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions, and a freshness of the deep springs of life.

It means a temperamental predotninence of courage over timidity and an appetite for adventure over love of ease.

Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. People grow old only by deserting their ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but in giving up interest, wrinkles only the soul. Worry, doubt, selfdistrust, fear and despair—these are the long, long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.

Whatever your years, there is in every being's heart the love of wonder, the undaunted challenge of events, the unfailing child-like appetite for what's next, and the joy in the game of life.

You are as young as your faith or as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence or as old as your fear; as young as your hope or as old as your despair?

In the central place of every heart there is a recording chamber; or as long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer and courage, so long you are young.

When the wires are all down and your heart is covered with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then, and only then, have you grown old. ***

When we speak of laughing your troubles away, we mean for you to be happy and laugh even when things go wrong. Laugh at your troubles and keep on laughing until they seem to disappear.

Laughter drives away the demons of hurt, pride and fear. Never mind the dark clouds of disappointment; they will pass as clouds do.

Remember, the sun still shines even when you cannot see it.

Laugh and be joyful, for you can change grey clouds into the bright sunshine of achievement.

Forget the yesterdays; think only of today, and live every minute of your life fully and happily. Love everyone, even when you would rather hate them— love, laugh and enjoy life. Love and you will be loved.

Let the sunshine of laughter dispel the gloom of despondent thoughts. Smile, laugh and be happy, then you will attract happiness, and, what is more, you will bring sunshine into the lives of others.

Brighten the world with your laughter, and shine on the world with happiness! *** Cheerfulness doesn't just happen; it's manufactured sunshine, however, there isn't enough to go around unless we all produce our share.

This man-made sunshine, so to speak, consists of lots of little rays— a heart-warming smile, a reassuring word, or a friendly act.

The sun is to nature, as cheerful persons are to mankind. We love other's sparkling eyes and merry voices; we are refreshed by their presence.

The key to happiness is in our own heart; we find joy in bringing it to others. If we make one person happy each day, in approximately 40 years, we will have made about 14,600 human beings happy—at least for a while.

Moreover, most of life's worries are self-made so let's create more man-made sunshine. This weary old world needs all it can get!

Member's Poem Published

World of Poetry of Sacramento, California has released its largest anthology of poetry entitled "Our Twentieth Century's Greatest Poems", which includes a poem written by a former Milam countian, Raymond L. Posival, now of Austin.

Mr. Posival, an auditor with the State Dept. of Highways and Public Transportation in Austin, was inspired to write his poem, "Ivy Covered Wall", after he and several co-workers toured the Department of Corrections Unit in Huntsville.

"Ivy Covered Wall" depicts the life of an inmate.

Mr. Posival is a member of Buckholts S.P.J.S.T. Lodge No. 15. ***

District V Meeting Tuesday, August 24th, we district officers met with officers and other representatives of Lodge No. 88 to discuss the District V fall meeting. I want to thank these lodge members who met with us and gave us the benefit of their ideas.

The district meeting will be held at Lodge 88, 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Sunday, October 10th.

Lodge 88 President Larry Pflughaupt, the officers and members are cooperating with us to make it a special day for you.

We are trying something different this time. Instead of a regular dinner, as we have had in the past, we will serve from 12:30 to 2:00 a lunch of ham and various meats with all the trimmings; this will be served free to the members attending the meeting.

Once again, our famous Choral Club, under the direction of Brother Tim Kostom, and our wonderful Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Brother Rudy Dybala, will perform and let us enjoy their beautiful songs and music during the noon hour.

The meeting will convene at 2 p.m. All who register before 2:15 will be eligible to win a door prize (at least five cash prizes).

Please mark October 10th on your calendar and make plans to attend the district meeting.

El Campo Lodge Plans Annual Party And Meeting The quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 50 was held at 7:30 p.m.

September 1st in the American Legion Auxiliary.

President Rita Vanek opened the meeting and the secretary read the minutes; also, the treasurer gave her report.

Under new business, we discussed our Christmas party to be held on the first Wednesday, December 1st.

At our December meeting, we will also have the election of officers for the coming year.

Our District VI meeting will be held October 10th at Moravia, Texas.

We had eighteen members and one guest present.

The lodge served refreshments.

19th Meeting Is Set Fo Waco Lodge September

Dear Members: The September and anniversary meeting of Lodge 66 will be held at Linden Hall, Sunday, September 19th. The meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m. There will be ice cream and cake after the meeting; our lodge will furnish the ice cream and the ladies are asked to bring pastries.

The youth will hold their meeting at 1:30 p.m.

Sisters and Brothers: Our meeting, held Sunday, August 15, was, as always, very interesting. At 2 p.m., Brother Emil E. Matula, president of our lodge, opened the meeting and asked us to remain standing for a moment of silence for Brother Ed Holly, who passed away July 23rd, and for all deceased members of our lodge.

Our lodge officers were present, except our lodge secretary, Brother Dominic F. Netek, who was excused.

President of the lodge, Brother Emil E. Matula, appointed Sister Grace Rohan to take the minutes of the meeting; also to read the minutes of our meeting held in July.

On the sick list were: Sisters Emilie Amburn, Lillian Clauss, and Brother Jaroslav Kleprlik. Brother August Blanar reported that he was in the hospital for a check-up, and was feeling better.

For various reasons, quite a few members were not present.

The meeting went on smoothly according to the president's outlined schedule. Numerous questions were asked, and answered. We had a nice surprise. Brother Stanley Kalmus, from the Lincoln Ballet Center in New York, came to see us. He is the son of our members, Brother and Sister Alfred and Henrietta Kalmus.

Stanley, during the season of opera programs on TV Channel 9, we will watch for your performance. We are proud of your.

I was surprised to meet three friends I do not see very often: Doris (Hruska) Darilek, who is married to Louis Darilek; their son, Dr. Richard E. Darilek, and daughter-in-law, Joyce, with their two children, Adwin and Helery, reside in Washington, D.C. Their daughter, Attorney Mary Pat Wilson, with her husband, Daniel Wilson, live here in Houston. Doris' mother is Effie Hruska, wife of the late Ed Hruska and her sister, Olga Zarr, the spouse of the late Bill Zarr. Both couples always supported the lodge in every way. Ed Hruska and Olga Zarr were good performers in our Czech plays.

Through the past year, Olga had a pretty tough time, surgery for gallstones and followed by other ailments and stayed with her sister for 3 months to recuperate, which kept her from going anywhere, but now she feels good and looks healthy. I enjoyed the 3-way conversation with the three girls.

Bob and Margaret Allbritton spent a nice weekend at the horse races in Louisiana and had a good time to experience the excitement of almost winning a race. Clem and Linda, their friends, shared all of this August 13th.

The dance, Saturday, August 28, with the wonderful music by John Garber, had a full house. It was a dress code dance and the Chandelier Ballroom was an array of beautifully-dressed ladies. In the orchestra, two musicians were Czechs: namely, Mr. Jelinek of Chicago, who spoke very good Czech and Mr. Mach just got by; his wife,

The 3 weeks speaking only Czech helped to improve their Czech language.

With sad hearts, we parted with a loyal brother, Frank J. Hanka, Jr., age 68, who passed away August 24, 1982 in a Little Rock, Arkansas hospital. He was a member of Sokol, Knights of Columbus, former employee of the Slavonic Mutual Insurance, a veteran of World War II (served as Major). Frank J. Hanka, Jr. was the son of the late Frank Hanka, Sr., who served Lodge No. 88 as secretary and on the Board of Trustees for many years. Frank J. Hanka, Jr. was the brother of the late Ernest J. Hanka, who served the lodge as vice president under five lodge presidents, also as treasurer and on the Board of Trustees and very valuably as legal advisor. Frank J. Hanka, Jr. is survived by his wife, May Anthony Hanka; his mother, Mrs. Ida Hanka, both of Clarksville, Arkansas; three sons, Bruce, Glenn and Brett Hanka, all of Houston, Texas; and three granddaughters. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 28, at 10 a.m. in St. Theresa's Catholic Church with Rev. Rodney Poythoress officiating. Interment was at Brookside Memorial Park.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the surviving family of Frank J. Hanka, Jr. Best wishes to Henry Kite, now home from St. Luke's Hospital after a long siege of several weeks.

"I don't want to go home" is what John Pokladnik is saying in a tired voice. (Sorry John, the Legend of Val Verde didn't work out; the lady on the white horse never came by, or did she?

During the last District VI Youth Achievement Day held at Lodge No 30 in New Taiton, July 18, 1982, brought a lot of memories to me of the years gone by When I saw these young people perform, I decided to write the history about Taiton Youth Club, which is still going strong after being organized in 1965.

Our first encounter was way before our club was organized. In 1963 was our first try-out for Gloria Knehn (now Mrs. Krpec) who ran for queen at Sweet Home; she was the first runner-up. Then Bennie Krpec and Judy Dluhos (now Mrs. Sefcik) went to State competition and placed first with a song "Aj Lucka".

(The big trophy stands in Taiton).

Both of them are married and Ben Krpec has two children.

From then on Mrs. Elsie Brdecka wanted us to form a club, so finally in March, 1965 we organized one with about thirty youngsters. Finan cially we were poor, but some adult members gave us a little start because children had to pay 5 cents each month and we started having activities to raise money.

I became a youth leader and had great help from my three assistants: Mrs. Jerome Dorotik, Mrs. Cyril Mrnustik and Mrs. Pete Merta, Jr. Without those three assistants, I couldn't have handled it myself.

In 1966 we hosted the first YAD in Taiton; that year, we had winners to go to State competition: namely,

Marian Dorotik (now Kveton) went to State and she played a piano solo entitled "Springtime Polka" at Elm Mott, Texas in ages 9-11 (at that time) and won State. She also won on the Youth Paper by naming it "The Communicator". We also won Youth Club of The Year at the state level, and I (Lottie Krutilek) won Youth Leader of the Year. Susan Illse was our District VI Queen contestant and she won State Queen. She is married and has three children.

Bennie Krpec was her escort (at that time there wasn't a king contest).

In those days the children were learning to sing Czech songs which they performed at various occasions; such as, rest homes, churches, private parties, Christmas caroling from house-to-house, for numerous birthday celebrants for the elderly plus many other activities.

That year we (only our youth club and Mrs. Elsie Brdecka) went camping for the first time to New Braunfels, and it was a most enjoyable and educational camp where we spent three days on our own expense. (For the past fifteen years District VI has been going to Bastrop State Park and everyone still enjoys it.)

It seems that every YAD is better every year and in 1970, the State YAD was held in El Campo; that year, the senior group in Talent won their State title to an Indian Dance they performed named "Good, Bad and The Ugly." The girls were Karen and Marian Dorotik, Madelyn and Monica Merta, Judy Dluhos, Anita Krpec and Josephine Krpec.

When the State YAD was at Taylor in 1971, Marian Dorotik won first place on her piano solo entitled "Bumble Boogie."

During 1973 Lisa Priesmeyer won State in 10-12 age category on her piano solo. Our Poster also won first place at State. In the craft sections there were also many, many winners each year, too many names to mention.

In 1974 the senior group Talent won first place at Temple. Those participating were Roseann Dorotik, Clare Dorotik, Lisa Blaha, Donna Blaha, Mary Jo Dluhos, and Lisa Priesmeyer with a "Charlie Chaplain Dance." Vicki Dorotik and Kelly Korenek won State in 1974 in a skit named "There Is A Hole In The Bucket."

After ten years I resigned in 1975 due to poor health. Georgia Dorotik and Annimae Merta took over and did a very good job.

Mrs. Georgia Dorotik was elected youth leader in 1976 and she still carries on with Assistant Joyce Kahanek. Under her supervision, the senior group in Talent won their State title at Temple in 1976 with a dance routine called "Columbia Stockade Blues." Entrants taking part were Roseann Dorotik, Clare Dorotik, Roxann Yockey, Veronica Hajovsky, Yvonne Krpec, Diane Dluhos, Lisa Blaha and Lisa Priesmeyer.

In 1978 the junior group won first place in Talent at State level in Temple: namely, Vicki Dorotik and Kelly Korenek. They performed a skit entitled "There Is A Hole In The Bucket."

During 1981 excitement brought additional winners of the State Titles: Kelly Korenek won State Queen and her duchess was Kristi Korenek; and the club won first

place in their Scrapbook competition.

Additional State Top winners were selected in 1982 at State YAD as listed below: The youth club has again won State title in their Scrapbook. First place in Individual Talent (6-9) went to Stephanie Roye on a Tap Dance.

In Individual Talent (15-17) first place was captured by Kelly Korenek on her dance number called "New York, New York." The Senior Group Talent also captured the State title on their dance routine "Make 'em Laugh." Performers included Vicki Dorotik, Kelly Korenek, Michelle Srubar and Jeanie Dorotik.

Queens who represented in the past District VI competition and won were: Susan Illse (also won State), Madily Merta, Monica Merta, Karen Dorotik, Clare Dorotik, Angie Sablatura, Yvonne Krpec, Pat Janik, Margie Treumer; and Kelly Korenek, who presently holds the State Queen title. Within the 16 years of Lodge 30 Taiton's Youth Club existence, we had 12 queens and two of them who served twice were Madilyn Merta and Monica Merta.

Our money-making projects for the youth club were raised by the children selling: Christmas cards, Birthday cards, other occasional cards, holding Stanley parties, selling some of their craft items, having garage sales, bake sales, and sales of food at District VI meetings.

Their present youth leader is still Mrs. Georgia Dorotik and her assistant is Joyce Kahanek.

I have enjoyed my association with everyone very much. I haven't missed a District VI YAD in all the 16 years since the youth club started; I enjoyed them all.

LODGE 30 YC HAS SEVERAL STATE WINNERS The Taiton SPJST youth attended State YAD, august 22nd at Temple.

We all had a great time and won many awards.

The Individual Talent (6-9) category, Stephanie Roye won first on her Tap Dance to "Paper Moon."

In 15-17 ages, Kelly Korenek placed first on a dance to "New York, New York."

In Group Talent; Vicki and Jean Dorotik, Michelle Srubar and Kelly Kroenek received first place in the senior competition on a prop dance to "Make 'Ern Laugh."

Our Scrapbook also won first place.

In Crafts, others placing were; Jean Dorotik won second in Home Arts and Science/Educational in the 13-14 age group. Marcy Dorotik received second inHobby Kits in 1012. Kristi Korenek won third in Foods in 6-9.

I would like to thank Br. Nick Morris and the gang for finishing early this year because we had a long way to travel and we appreciated getting home early.

Wednesday, September 15, 1982—VESTN1K/11 LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS YC NEWS Our teen club of Lodge No. 84, Dallas has had a very eventful summer. In May we elected officers for the coming year who are as follows: Pres.-Lisa Reznik, V. Pres.Richard Andreason, Sec.-Vicki Gerlich, Treas.-Charles Pokladnik and Telephone-Paul Manak.

June 27th was. District III YAD, in which our senior and junior groups won both Beseda and group talent.

There was also a dinner and bingo party earlier in the month to raise money for the youth clubs.

The Princess Dance was held July 17th this year. We would like to congratulate our new king and queen, Richard Andreason and Michelle Connors. Runner-ups were Larry Petr and Vicki Gerlich. The money from the dance went toward the annual teen trip which was July 26-27. We spent a day at White Water, then stayed that night at Grand Prairie and went to Six Flags the next day. A few of us got a little sunburned but I imagine it was worth it. Joann Manak, one of our leaders and chaperones, was generous enough to offer the use of her house and yard for a longawaited shaving cream fight that night.

August 8-11 was District III camp.

There weren't as many kids this year but we enjoyed it just as well Sunday, August 22nd was State YAD as you well know, and I'm proud to say that our Beseda groups won state, also. A few of our members placed high in craft and talent, and I would like to congratulate them and all who won.

For many of us in Dallas it's back to the books already so study hard and we'll see you!

Anna Key in 13-14 placed third in Science/Educational with a white ribbon and Staci Schoenst placed third in Hobby Kits with a white ribbon in 10-12. These four places with five items was a record for us.

We played on the diving board and the slides, which was a lot of fun.

It is the home of the Slovaks and the Czechs. The larger part of the Czechs live in Bohemia and Moravia in the western part of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia is primarily where the Slovaks live.

Czechoslovakia's biggest city and capitol is Prague.

Czechoslovakia is covered by rugged mountains, fertile plains, and rolling hills. Czechoslovakia has about the same area as New York but only has about four-fifths as many people as the state. The people of Czechoslovakia have a higher standard of living than most of the people in Eastern Europe. Most of the Czechoslovaks live in urban areas and more of them work in manufacturing industries than in any other economic activity.

Czechoslovakia has become an industrial nation because of coal and other natural resources. It also produces a variety of agricultural products.

In 1918, Czechoslovakia gained independence. A single nation was formed when the Czechs and Slovaks united.

Before Czechoslovakia gained independence, Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia had been part of Austria-Hungary.

Czechoslovakia in 1948 became a Communist state. The country's economy and government were changed and patterned after Russia.

The Soviet Bloc is a group of Communist nations led by Russia.

Czechoslovakia is a loyal member of the Soviet Bloc. Most of Czechoslovakia's imported goods come from countries of the Soviet Bloc, and they serve, in return, as markets for many of its exports.

Czechoslovakia established the country as a socialist republic. It was divided into two sections: the Czech Socialist Republic (Bohemia and Moravia) and the Slovak Socialist Republic (Slovakia) in a 1968 amendment.

The Communist Party The Communist Party is about 9 percent of all Czechoslovaks. All important government positions are held by party members. The Party Congress is the highest authority of the Communist Party.

National Government Czechoslovakia has a two-house legislature called the "Federal Assembly." The Federal Assembly consists of the House of Nations and the House of People. The House of Nations has 150 members —75 from each socialist republic; the House of People has 200 members elected from the basis of population in districts. Each member serves a five-year term.

The President of Czechoslovakia is elected by the Federal Assembly, He serves a five-year term. The President appoints the country's Prime Minister and Cabinet.

The Socialist Republic The Czech Socialist Republic and the Slovak Socialist Republic each have a Prime Minister, Cabinet and an elected Legislature. They have limited self-governing authority in

such areas as health, transportation and education.

Local Government ' Czechoslovakia is divided into 10 regions. Bratislava and Prague form separate political units. Then, the regions are subdivided into districts. The regions and districts are governed by National Committees.

Courts The highest Court of Czechoslovakia is the Supreme Court. There are also courts at the regional, district and local levels.

Armed Forces Czechoslovakia has about 200,000 men in the Armed Forces. They serve in the National People's Army, which consists of air and ground forces_ and national guard units. When men turn 18, they may be drafted. Most of them serve two years in the Armed Forces.

Czechoslovakia belongs to the Warsaw Pact, a military alliance made up of Russia and other European Communist nations.

August 30, 1910, he married Miss Annie Barbara Kudrna of Ennis.

Brother Nekuza was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, and SPJST Lodge No. 25.

He was a retired farmer and had lived in Ennis most of his life.

Surviving are two sons, Anton H. Nekuza of Alma, Texas and Raymond B. Nekuza of Ennis; three daughters, Mrs. Cecilie Liska, Mrs. Adell Svehlak and Mrs. Mary Zabojnik, all of Ennis; 18 grandchildren; 25 greatgrandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Emil R. Nekuza of Dallas; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Patak of Garrett and Mrs.

Mary Patak of Ennis; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Brother Nekuza was preceded in death by his wife, 2 February 1972; a daughter Mrs. Mildred Vitovsky, 13 February 1977; a grandson Daniel Nekuza, 28 August 1976; and 3 granddaughters Mrs. Patsy Griesenbeck, 5 July 1971; Mrs. Lorraine Wade, 3 July 1978; and Miss Denise Nekuza, 19 October 1959.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our most heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother RAY E. MOORE, of Waco, Texas, who died Saturday, July 31, 1982, at the age of 61.

Rosary was recited by his many friends, Monday at 7 p.m. at Connally-Compton Funeral Home West Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was officiated by Father Bernard Pustejovsky Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial took place at St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Brother Ray was a retired printer from Hall Printing Co. of Waco. He worked as a car salesman for a few years and was a very faithful worker and member of Linden Hall.

Brother Ray became a member at Linden Hall in September of 1958.

He served as a trustee of the Board for many years and held various jobs throughout his active years.

Brother Moore is survived by his wife, Dorothy K. Moore; two daughters, Cynthia Moore Oswald of Waco and Kathy Moore Rossi of Dripping Springs, Texas; a brother James Moore of Lacy Lakeview; and three grandchildren, Christi and Andrew Oswald of Waco, and Jared Rossi of Dripping Springs.

A case is the form which shows, the function of a noun, adjective, or pronoun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are seven such cases in the Czech language.

1. NOMINATIVE, or subject case: prvnf pad — answers the questions: KDO — who? (is the doer of, or subjected to, some action?); CO — what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?)

Ex: KDO tam chodf? Karel tam jde.

Here Karel is in the nom. case. Co se tam deje? Schfize se tam kona. Here schirze is in the nom. case.

GENITIVE Case — druhy pad, has a function similar to the English possessive case, (my friend's house, or the house of my friend). The genitive has acquired a wide range of meaning besides the basic sense of BELONGING. It answers the questions: Cello? of what?, CI? whose?

Ex.: Z eeho je to vy-rabene Ze Zeleza a z litiny.

CI je to pueik? Je to pueik meho otce. (Otce, here is in the gen. case).

3. DATIVE Case — fret' pad, is primarily a case of direction marking end or result towards which an act proceeds. It is therefore used after the verbs GIVING, SENDING, SAYING, or WRITING something to someone. It answers the questions KOMU?, to whom?, and CEMU?, to what?

Ex: Komu pike Pfau domu tatInkovi. (Tatfkovi here is in the dative case). Cemu posloucha Posloucham vysilacf stanici. (Stanici is in the dative case).

4. ACCUSATIVE, Or Direct object case — etvrtST pad; marks the receiver of the action or the thing acted upon by the subject. It answers the questions: KOHO? whom?, and CO what?

5. VOCATIVE Case — pats'r pad — is used for addressing or calling to a person or a thing.

6. LOCATIVE, or prepositional — §estY pad; is always used with prepositions. It cannot stand alone. It expresses position in time or space. It answers the questions KDE? where? kom? About whom? 0 eem? About what?

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the .dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
