San Antonio Czech Choral Club

The San Antonio Czech Choral group meets every third Friday of the month at the POLISH AMERICAN CENTER located at 2611 Mission Rd., San Antonio.

Brother Norman Kneschk of 4800 Kelly Elliott, Arlington, Texas, sailed aboard the S.S. Constitution 3 July 1982 which was a 7-day cruise around the Hawaiian Islands; stopping at five of the most popular ports-of-call, Honolulu, Hilo, Kona, and the most sensuous of all the islands, Kauai, known as the "Garden Island."

The S.S. Constitution is a 30,000ton Luxury Liner 682 feet long; it also has the only American crew left in the seven seas; it's Hawaii's floating island.

During those magnificent days, they had a chance to explore the single most beautiful spot on the earth, recapturing the wonder and romance of Captain Cook's first glimpse of the islands back in the 18th century.

Brother Kneschk reported having a great time while on vacation.

Food For Thought A friend is a jewel who shines brightest in the darkness of misfortune. *** Don't wait for the future, be thankful for what you have now. *** A smile is the light in the window of the face that shows the heart is at home. *** Happiness adds and multiplies as we divide it with others. *** The best way to cheer yourself is to try to cheer somebody else up. *** Sunday, August 22nd, was when all district first place winners travelled to Temple to compete in state competition, some of them took part in one event/category, while others participated in talent, craft and/or Beseda dancing.

After registration of the entrants and contestants, a noon meal was served at Temple High School.

The afternoon's program commenced with the traditional "Beseda", performed in colorful costumes by the junior/senior groups from Dallas. The Individual and Group Talent numbers followed; the various talents in singing, dancing, pantomine, etc., were also quite entertaining.

Brothers and Sisters: a State YAD is indeed a huge undertaking, and it was quite obvious that the workers and volunteers were present to help make the Youth Achievement Day another success.

This year, Districts III and VI had many first place winners. District I and III also kept close race in its activities on the merit system.

The highest award presentation went to Sandra Schoenemann, daughter of Brother and Sister James Schoenemann of Lodge 9 in Snook. The recipient achieved her award for accummulating 13,395 points which was credited to her within a 3-year active period.The 13th annual scholarship may be used toward any college or university of her choice.

Shirley Dobecka, daughter of Brother and Sister Robert Dobecka of West, was selected "Junior of the Year:" while Darrell Uptmor, son of Brother and Sister Aubrey liptmor of Elm Mott, was awarded "Teenager of the Year." Both of these recipients are from Lodge Cottonwood No 6.

Additional achievement awards were presented to the five top Juniors and Teenagers; incidently, there were four from Lodge 6, and six from Lodge 9.

Our heartiest congratulations to each of you at state level for your efforts, and may you continue your

ambitions and desires for the years ahead.

We also wish to express our appreciation for the cooperation given backstage during the picture taking; the organized manner in which it was held helped make the situation run smoother without the possibility of omitting a winner's photograph. *** September 12th must be a special day for many lodges because it seems this date was selected for meetings and such due to Labor Day Weekend. Also, there is a district meeting on the same day in Floresville at Lodge 107 that is hosting District VII meeting. *** Sunday, October 17th is another huge attraction scheduled at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas when several Czech fraternal societies will assemble in their colorful costumes; some, of course, will be authentic, while others will reflect their owner's own tastes.

This special occasion draws scores of visitors and participants throughout the state. There will be individuals performing, and paying homage to their heritage of our forefathers.

The Program Committee is inviting all Czech lodges, clubs, societies, circles and youth clubs in Texas to take part in the variety of activities.

Brother B. A. Zvolanek, of the Publicity Committee, extends a cordial invitation to everyone for CZECH DAY — OCTOBER 17th! *** November 7th isn't too far away; this is the day when members from various lodges will help celebrate the Grand Opening of Lodge 172 in Pasadena.

We encourage you to plan to attend this activity in District V. Pasadena members have been working hard toward this achievement, so let's join them and extend a fraternal visit toward continued progress. They are still accepting donations on their building; if you plan to make a contribution, we suggest you do so as soon as possible because time is closing, and we are certain they (the members) are thankful for the contributions. *** In answer to the numerous telephone calls and letters about The West Polka Show" on Radio Station KKIK and what happened to it, the following is what happened: The station was sold to a religious university to broadcast only religious programming; they cancelled the Cowboy Football broadcasts and all, etc. We transferred the West Polka Show to KHBR, Hillsboro at 1560 AM and 102.5 FM. It is on from 1:30 to 2:55 p.m. Sundays with "The AmericanCzech Hour".

At this time the District VII youth had a Youth Program. On the program were Jennifer Marek — songs "Texas Our Texas" and "America" of Lodge No. 117; Angie Hrncir — piano solo also of Lodge No. 117; Lodge No. 107, Floresville had a skit "Georgia Peach," and Lodge No. 185 a piano solo by Ann Therese Matcek.

Following the program the meeting began its old business.

A moment of silence was held in respect for our deceased members who had departed since the last meeting.

Roll call of lodges revealed that six were represented. They are: No. 79, Corpus Christi; No. 107, Rozkvet SPJST — Zapadu, Floresville; No. 117, Robstown; No. 133, San Antonio; No. 137, Taft; and No 185, New Braunfels.

Correspondence was read from President Nick Morris and Brother Rudy Sefcik; both were unable to attend the district meeting.

Brother Emil Matula, District VII treasurer, gave the following report: Youth Fund — $948.10 and General Fund — $929.34.

Director of District VII, Sister Thelma Hrncir, welcomed all present who came to the meeting in the beautiful Hill Country. She stated that all sales representatives are the backbone of our Society, also that the sales representatives' banquet would be held May 1st at Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi.

Something new to our Society has happened and that is that scholarships will be available to young people of the SPJST. Professors of Mary Hardin-Baylor University will select the eligible students. District VII is allocated $125,000 for loans at interest rate of 1 percent below the 16 if2 percent of the Central Texas area. Single person must have $25,000 of insurance in force, or a couple also must have $25,000 of insurance to be eligible for a loan.

Sister Hrncir reported that $12,000 per year is saved by publishing the Vestnik in tabloid form. There is also a need of more members to write to the Vestnik. The SPJST `be fshort ithd ' wilt li4 History

Sister Hrncir reported that the SPJST workshop that was held at the Supreme Lodge cost $9,200. The question was asked of the members if they prefer that all officers of lodges meet at the Supreme Lodge or as they did before in different areas of the State. Most of the members of District VII prefer that workshops be held as they were before.

Also that secretary of lodges report to the Vestnik about their 50year members. Sister Hrncir brought a membership registration book (a sample of No. 172, Pasadena), she stated that this is a good idea for every lodge to have.

A check for $400 for General Fund and Youth Fund was presented to the District VII treasurer.

Rest Homes Director Eugene Hrncir reported that the homes are filled to capacity with a waiting list.

The sign at Rest Home No. I in Taylor has been donated by the sons of Sister Mary Holub Gardener. The rest homes have a van and a station wagon that are used for the transportation of guests. A new roof has been put on the Rest Home No. I in Taylor. There were many other repairs made to both of the rest homes.

Maxine Pavliska, DYC, at this time presented a bouquet of silk flowers to Sister Jasek who retired as youth leader of Lodge No. 185.

The flowers were from the District VII Youth Club. Sister Pavliska stated that the District VII youth year began with a training class in Floresville (hosted by Maxine in her home), ten people attended and silk flowers were made as a new craft item. District VII YAD will be hosted by Robstown Youth Club, June 27th at Tuloso-Midway Elementary School in Corpus Christi.

Camp will be held from July 23-27 at Camp Val Verde and Sunday morning services will be held.

August 12th a district outing will be held in Landa Park in New Braunfels.

Brother Matula, District VII Publication Committee, reported that they meet twice a year. Complaints are received and they are discussed thoroughly. A Vestnik survey reveals that 9,800 copies of the tabloid are mailed dut to the members. Another survey will be held as there are many new members, and it is needed to know if they desire to receive the Vestniks.

The publisher and the editor are getting along good and there is good co-operation between the Supreme Lodge and editor.

The Nominating Committee Chairman, Brother Monta Foster, presented the following recom mendations: President Brother William Marek of Lodge 117, 1st Vice President Emil Matula of Lodge 133, 2nd Vice President Viola Cabla of Lodge 137, Secretary Betty Jurica of Lodge 117, Treasurer Brother Ernest Jasek of Lodge 185, Rest Homes Director Eugene Hrncir of Lodge 117, District Youth Counselor Maxine Pavliska of Lodge 107, and Assistant DYC Polly Bayer of Lodge 107.

Sister Hrncir made a motion that all nominated be elected by acclamation, seconded by Sister

Evelye Matula. All the above were elected to serve this coming year.

Lodge No. 107 offered to Jost the next meeting; date to be announced later.

VII Director's Report District

Dear Readers: Have you ever been on a road off the beaten path, traveling to a distant point, and come to a small town, quiet, peaceful with no big problems, where the town's people greeted you warmly, took you in, and made you feel like one of them?

If you have ever been so fortunate, then you know the feeling my husband and I had when we attended a barbecue social of Lodge No. 147, Vesela Osada, Jourdanton held at the Jourdanton Civic Center, August 29th.

About fifty members, many of whom are related, attended the yearly social where we feasted on delicious barbecued chicken, sausage and a pig donated by Brother Phil Ciomperlik with many trimmings donated by the ladies.

The dessert table was laden with so many goodies we were frustrated as we tried to make a selection!

My first contact with Lodge No. 147 was at the San Antonio convention where I met their delegate, Brother Henry Belicek and his wife. But I recognized many faces and names that I have met at district meetings and other activities. Brother Belicek, who has served as lodge president for over 46 years, greeted everyone and after opening ceremonies, the feast and fellowship began. I was given the pleasure of addressing the group after the meal as well as did my husband, Eugene, who spoke on Rest Home matters.

Lodge No. 147 was organized in December, 1933. Most of their active 75 members live in the Jourdanton area. Officers are: President Henry Belicek, Vice President Bobby Myska, Secretary Isabel Ventrcek, Financial Secretary Cecilia Huble, and Treasurer Pauline Fojtik.

As organizations go, this group may be considered small without a booming potential. But what they may lack in numbers, they more than compensate with feelings of love, concern, and caring for others.

Here is true fraternalism, and I wish them everything good for the future. Keep your bonds of closeness for family and friends, never forgetting to offer the warm hand of fellowship to strangers who are lucky enough to come into your midst. You are helping to make this journey through life more pleasant for all of us!

Lodge No. 15, Buckholts It was a routine meeting August 11 at 7:30 p.m. All officers were present and 2 guests, Dan Balusek and Eugene Marak.

Minutes were read and accepted as read; also the treasurer's and standing committee reports were accepted as read.

Motion was made to accept Eric Soloman as a new member and the motion carried.

We did not have anyone on our sick list.

Vlasta Kamenicky celebrated her birthday this month; also Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Seibert will celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary this month.

Meeting adjourned for a social of cold cuts, cake and ice cream.

Our next meeting will be at 7:30 September 8th.

Lodge No. 28,

East Bernard Meeting Dear Members: The September meeting will be held the 2nd Sunday (the 12th), at 2:30 p.m., in the lodge hall. The meeting was postponed due to the Labor Day Holiday. The agenda will have the usual reports, and any other business needing attention.

The convening of the "Gathering" will take place after the business meeting.

The August meeting, on the 1st, was short. Reports were of prime interest and all were accepted as given. The door prize was won by Brother Albert Lupik who in turn donated it to the kitchen fund.

For the "Gathering", the lodge furnished some of, the sandwiches and liquid refreshments. Sisters Sperlik, Kortis, Schank, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval brought enough to fill the table. Sister Haverda took on a special project of bringing a birthday cake to honor those members who had August birthdays. A big thanks to all.

Schedules September 12th Meeting Dear Members: Our Lodge No. 29 regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, August 8th at 4 p.m.

Vice President Ronnie Rieger presided in absence of our President Edwin Adamek.

Clay Schneider, representing the youth club, led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing for a minute of silence for our deceased Sisters, Bertha Winkler, Frances Janovec and Annie Roznovak.

Roll call of officers showed our president was absent.

Secretary Michael Kaiser read

the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved.

Albin Machu gave the treasurer's report and Bobby Wuensche gave the Property Committee report.

New applicants for membership are: Kelly Lynn Kaderka, Michael Messar and Christine Garrett.

Brother Rieger thanked everybody for coming out to the District II meeting and social at Round Rock. He said Taylor had the largest attendance.

A motion was made to put new carpet on the stairway and also check the ladies' restroom to see what needs to be done.

A motion was also made and seconded to put up two security lights at the entrance of the hall.

Youth Leader Melvin Steger reported 26 members present at the youth club meeting plus one visitor and eight adults. They also had three new members join the club. He reported that quite a few members entered YAD and a lot of them placed. He reminded everybody that Troy Marx is District II King and Clay Schneider is the Duke and that State Royalty will be held September 18 in Academy. There were 64 members who attended District II Camp and 24 youth members were present at the fall meeting in:Round Rock.

Door prizes were won by Mary Mikolaj, Otis Lehmann and John Kovar.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, September 12 at 4 p.m.

Ellinger Dear Members: Sunday, September 19th, 1982 is the day of our next quarterly lodge meeting, and remember that at the June meeting we decided that we would again meet at the Ellinger Fire Dept. Building at 1:30 p.m, and, after the meeting, we will have another of those enjoyable domino and card parties.

This means that all of you are invited to come to the meeting as well as the party. You and your friends and neighbors are welcome to come; also remember that each family is asked to bring some sort of refreshments, such as cake, pie, cookies or sandwiches and the lodge will provide tea or coffee. The domino and card games will begin at 2 p.m. Prizes will be given to the highest scorer of each category and a door prize will also be given.

Our June meeting and games party was well represented, and we hope that the September meeting will exceed all previous meetings.

Lodge Makes Another Contribution Waco

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 66 had their meeting Sunday, August 15 and President Daniel Nors conducted the meeting.

The flags were presented by Larry Brem and Chris Owen. Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto were recited by the members.

Members were asked to remain standing for a minute of silence in memory of Brother Sydnek Janek.

For roll call all officers were present except Sister Annie Hanus, English reporter.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the July meeting minutes which were approved as read.

In correspondence, Sister Engelke read a thank you note from the William Warren family.

Brother Shilling gave the Entertainment Committee report.

He reported there is a change in the lodge Christmas Party, which will be Saturday, December 11th instead of Saturday, December 18th. There are plans for the September meeting on the birthday of our lodge but no definite plans at this time. After today's meeting, watermelons will be served.

Sister Brem gave the Youth Club report. The youth members had made crazy hats which they modeled for the members. Sister Brem thanked the mothers who made the cakes for the cake walk; also to those who helped set up things. The club did very well on their project. The club planned a Family Picnic August 24th,to Water Slide on the 12th and to attend YAD at Temple, August 22nd and then Back-to-School, again.

Brother Nors thanked those who came out to help for Cleanup Day. They were Roland Webb, Johnnie and Polly Gaidusek, Ray and Ruby Orsag, George and Dorothy Shilling, Daniel and Leona Nors, Emil and Annie Hanus, Bonnie Pruitt, Arthur Langlotz, Frank Parma, Ira Niswanger and James Pavlicek, who came the day before to move three limbs broken by some high winds in the area.

Health Committee Report: Sister Gaidusek read a thank you note from the Ray Moore family.

Sympathy cards were sent to Sister Dorothy Moore, the Donald Oswalds and the Wayne Rassi family on the loss of their loved one, Brother Ray Moore. (We, at Lodge 66, send our sympathy to the family. Brother Ray was a very devoted member at Lodge 66; he will be missed. May he rest in eternal peace.) A sympathy card was also sent to Mr. and Mrs. Milford Behringer on the loss of her father. May he rest in eternal peace.

Get-well cards were sent to Brother Bill Cox in the VA Hospital in Temple, to Mr. L. A. Hykel, to Sister Jewell Worhal who had recent surgery, also to Sister Minnie Narovec and Brother William Warren, Sr. We hope all of them are OK. Brother James Pavlicek, Sr. was in the hospital and we hope he is also doing OK. Baby congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. James Pavlicek, Jr.!

It was noted that Johnnie Mensik of Ennis, leader of an orchestra who played at Linden Hall, was in a Lufkin hospital with a severe heart attack. We send our prayers and get-well wishes to Johnnie Mensik for a speedy recovery.

We, at Lodge 66, wish to extend our sympathy to Brother James and Sister Toni Talley on the loss of her mother this past week. May she rest in peace.

We also extend our sympathy and prayers to the Brandon Wood family who lost his life early Sunday a.m. in a very tragic accident. Brandon was on his way home after working at Linden Hall as the security guard; he was only 19 years of age and a very nice, polite and clean-cut young man. He was very efficient and made friends with everyone. We have lost a very good friend. May he rest in eternal peace.

Brother Raymond Volcik made a motion that the lodge donate $100 to the Emil Barak family. Motion carried.

Brother Silas Smith installed the youth club officers. He reminded them that lodges that have an active youth club are lodges that grow and progress ahead. Good luck to the youth club for another successful year!

Sister Pruitt said the club had a youth member who has over 100 hours in voluntary work at the VA Hospital. He is James Yates, congratulations! James. I know we have other youth members who donate time to some other projects.

We are proud of all of you members.

Members celebrating birthdays were Sisters, Gloria Locke, Eleanor Volcik, Madeline Webb, Karen Shelton, and Brothers, Johnnie Gaidusek, Frank Miller and Chris Owen. "Happy Birthday" to each of you! Karen Shelton brought the cake.

I wish to thank Sister Pruitt for taking notes, due to my absence in taking care of my mother on her sudden illness. She is doing OK at the present and I appreciate the ex pressions of get-well wishes from the members. Thanks to all of you and also to Sister Bonnie who is always there when you need a helping hand. Happenings At Lodge Dallas No. 84 Dear Members: August 16 at 7:30 p.m., our lodge held its monthly meeting.

In the absence of Secretary E. Salac, Sister Cherri Petr took her place and she also led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Sunshine Committee sent get-well cards to Sister Frances Baleja, Sister Dorothy Prasifka, Sister Jeri Kopecky and Brother Charlie Barta; sympathy cards to Brother Ed Faraizl on the loss of his brother, and Annette Faraizl on the loss of her father.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported 22 teens and juniors plus 9 leaders attended camp this year and all enjoyed the activities. She also said District III Director Sid Pokladnik spent time out there in the sun and donated wieners for the roast they had one night.

House Committee reported by Brother Paul Pokladnik, in absence of Brother Adolph Salac, thanked Brothers Emil Petr, Adolph Salac, Ben Jarma and Paul Pokladnik for clean-up of lots and Brother and Sister Edwin and Annie Petr were thanked in the meeting for trimming the shrubbery and cleaning the flower beds; also thanked in the meeting were Brother George and Sister Martha Mandak and Brother Edwin and Sister Annie Petr for donating and putting down a new carpet in the entrance; it looks very nice.

A lot of the repairs and painting to the inside and outside of our lodge are being completed in the near future. We hope everyone will try to come and see it before too long; like maybe September 12th; we all know that's our Czechfest and we urge you to participate in some way, please.

Brother Ben Jarma reported a good season for the ball team and a trophy will be presented for the case.

Our dance Saturday night, August 21 with music by the well-known orchestra of the Knights of Dixie brought in a lovely attendance. The dance was hosted by and in charge of the dance, Bill Hlozek and also

serving in the ticket office. His lovely wife, Geraldine, (she is one of our Birthday Club Sisters) with Erna O'Conner seated the guests while Irene Slovacek greeted the arriving guests at the door. This was a dress-code dance and all the ladies came dressed accordingly including the sisters on the committee who wore lovely gowns.

Karl and Ora Nell Hassenbrock entertained friends, Mr. and Mrs. Erette Bartay; they married their daughter last week and still celebrated this event with bubbly champagne. To enjoy this were Royal and Laura Warnasch, Herman and Margereth Liebscher, Tim and Rosalee Kostom, Pearl Hanka, and, of course, I had a swig, too, to toast to the happiness of the Bartay's newlywed children.

A very special group at one of the tables surrounded by Edgar and Edna Ruppert were Noble and Kay Keating and two celebrants, Don and Audrey Jeter. Audrey's birthday was August 24 and her better half, Don, on August 25; and to top it off and make it a real celebration, August 28 was their wedding anniversary. Dear Edna Ruppert brought and lighted a beautiful, decorated cake combined with a "Happy Birthday" song and a lot of other goodies for the happy couple.

A newcomer Mr. Joseph Kosik, for the first time visiting our lodge, was given a royal treatment by Erna O'Conner introducing him to members and friends. We hope you felt at home, Mr. Kosik, and will come again to enjoy our friendly atmosphere.

Joe Miksch, one of our Board members, enjoyed a retirement party with his co-workers at Exxon where he worked and spent 30 years before his retirement five years ago.

One of the men was retiring, so a party was planned to meet in Conroe at the Hyden Restaurant. They all had a jolly time to reminesce bygone days; about twenty were present including their spouses.

In the Blue Room was a longtime, missed couple, Vincent Barodoski with lovely wife, Hilda, both smiling as always. During the time we missed them, Vincent, had a pretty rough time. For ten days he was confined in St. Luke's Hospital to have two surgeries which, thank goodness, were successful. Now, after five weeks at home he gained some of his weight hack. Hilda said he lost about 30 lbs. but gained quite a bit back and is contemplating to go back to work; in that case, Hilda has the last word. Now you both are all right so start coming back like you used to. Members like you are always missed.

Kathy Trefell winged to Colorado to be at the scene when her grandchild will arrive; sure enough, Kathy was on the spot to greet her grandson, Travis Runnels on August 3, 1982 in Boulder, Colorado weighing 8 1/2 lbs. born to son, Larry and daughter-in-law Denay Runnels and bestowing the title of "Grandparents" on Mike and Kathy Trefell. Larry is the younger son, a teacher and coach in Boulder, Colo.

Everyone of the pictures Kathy showed are just beautiful. Congratulations.

To the proud father, almost like a present for this occasion, was promoted to assistant vice-pres. at Texas Commerce Bank Reagan. Congratulations to both of your achievements. I almost forgot the aunt. She was glowing over the fact her sister and brother-in-law gave her the title to be called "Auntie Glenna Gerhart".

Thursday the Blue Room hosted several regulars and a large round table was surrounded by the "Roznovsky Clan" entertaining their brother, Ladis Roznovsky, visiting here from Healdsburgh, Cal. Ladis arrived Saturday, August 14 and will stay in Texas as long as it will take to visit all his brothers and sisters. First stop was in Houston to visit with Louis and A.V. Roznovsky; then to Granger, Tx. to visit with sister, Mary Zett; up to Austin to see brother, John; then down to Corpus Christi another sister, C. Vesely. Looks like Ladis (an available bachelor) will have a busy and enjoyable time in Texas and won't worry when to be back home.

It was nice to have met you; I am sure your family made your stay a pleasant one.

Many times we think of Emily Zemko, who moved to Chicago after her husband, John, passed away and we all were sorry for her to leave and pull up the roots after 30 years in Houston and move and live in cold, cold weather. We hope Emily thinks of us as often as we do of her.

Elsie (Dvorak) Kadera is back at home in McKinney but, again, in the hospital in Dallas for some more tests. We all hope they will be favorable.

The Blue Room Annual Party will take place Sunday, October 17. You may get your advance tickets in the Blue Room from Nat, the bartender, or in the lodge office from Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt; call 869-5767, she will help you.

We are very concerned about our Brother Henry Kite who was stricken with a serious ailment last week and is confined in the Intensive Care Unit in the Methodist Hospital.' Several members visited Henry, but could see him only for a few seconds.

Henry is a valuable and conscientious member serving on the ever-busy Entertainment Committee. Please get well soon!

Lodge Sets September 16 Meeting Date Galveston

Dominic (Don) Netek (after twelve years as the director and manager of the San Antonio Czech Choral Club), handed his credentials to Mr. Allen Krejci who will direct and manage the Club. The Choral Club w organized in 1970, and has performed and participated in many Czech functions in the City and throughout the State, such as the Dallas Fair, Houston, Victoria, Texas and other cities, also many nursing homes. Some of the songs that are being played now by many Texas bands were first introduced by the Choral Group.

Frankie, Martha and Josh Milan just returned from a 10-day trip. Frankie umpired the Women's National Fast Pitch Softball Tournament in Binghampton, New York, then saw all the interesting sites in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.; a tour of the White House was included. Everyone reported a wonderful time.

Trey Steinman, who toured with the Texas Boys Choir for 6 weeks in Japan, returned home safely after all the flooding and typhoons all around them. They had one scary incident with high winds, but he said it still was all great.

The heat wave continues and no rain in sight.

Melanie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Wayne Merlick and the granddaughter of Brother Jerry and Florence Merlick and to Brother Gregory Hunter who was wed to Sherri Lee Sheasley in the home of Mr. and Mrs. K. C. Yale, Fort Worth. Greg is the son of Sam and Alice Hunter and the grandson of Brother Joe and Sister Elizabeth Gregory. Greg is a lifetime member of our lodge. May they have a long and happy life together.

Paint rollers were moving at 90 miles per hour. A few weeks ago _I received a call from President Dan Berry of Lodge 172 saying he had a talk with Board Chairman Royal Warnasch of Lodge 88 , who 'bighly

recommended me as a 2-handed Rembrandt painter from way back that excelled in painting new SPJST lodge buildings specializing in restroom facilities, and based on Warnasch's recommendation asked if I would be available to help Lodge 172 in their painting project.

Naturally, having a responsibility to District V, I agreed to help with the painting project and the date was set for August 7, at 6:45 a.m. I tried to get my brother-in-law Tim Kostom to go along and help me with the project at 172, but he refused on the grounds that August 7th was one of his special rest days, a day in which he rested and drank Scotch.

However, as a fraternalist, he promised to let me use his Cadillac to carry my working tools to the project.

Early at 5 a.m. on the morning of August 7th I took a shave, made my special breakfast dish, prepared a special cake mix of wax, whistle berries and other ingredients for my wife's birthday, placed it in the oven and set the clock for two hours baking time. After loading Tim's Cadillac with my working tools I took off traveling east on 610 and several miles later veered south on 610 to Pasadena. About two miles later and near the overpass bridge that spans the ship channel I was pulled over by the law and was told that one of my front car lights was out, that I was driving in excess of the speed limits, I was zigzagging in and out of the normal traffic pattern and that my breath smelled bad. I explained to the officers that due to my special breakfast diet that I consumed before leaving Houston, consisting of 8 ounces of raw garlic, 6 ounces of red onions, and 46 whistle berries, even made me conscious of my surroundings. Later the officers suggested that I roll down the windows in the Cadillac so there would be more air ventilation . .. what the officers didn't know was that the Cadillac didn't even have windows. They also suggested that I keep my mouth closed as I approached Pasadena, because there are several oil and gas refineries in operation which could cause an explosion if my breath and the fumes became mixed together . . . sometimes whistle berries, garlic, and onions with fumes can make big things happen.

Arriving at Lodge 172 I had to force the front wheels of the Cadillac to jump a one foot curb so I could back up and get in a position to unload my tools. It seems the car is now difficult to steer. The president, Dan Berry, and Joe Krenek, Tommy Wallace, and Margie Berry helped me unload and we set up our game plan to attack the painting project.

The plan was paint the wall going east for 175 feet, going north for 120 feet, then going west for 175 feet, and the final stage to the south for 120 feet. I figured that some 8,000 square feet had to be painted which would consume some 18 hours of working time and that really shook me up. I became so horrified at such a work schedule that I tried to run back to the car and take off back to Houston. Strange things happened: The car wouldn't start, so I remained and started the paint job.

Getting started we ran into a few problems.

First, we didn't have any electricity and we couldn't see what we

Saturday, August 28th another member, Frank J. Prochaska of Lodge 183, was married to Janet Hahn and they had their reception and dance at the lodge hall. Frank is the son of F.J. and Jo Prochaska of Lodge 180 and Janet is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clem Hahn. The hall was decorated beautifully and music was provided by the Moravian Memory Makers. There was a large number of friends and relatives attending and everyone enjoyed the music. The lodge members wish Frank and Janet all the happiness in the world and a long and happy future.

This is just one way your lodge has of helping its members so any of you other members who would like to have a party or wedding reception, why not have it at the lodge where there is plenty of room to have a ball.

I hope all of you members read the editor's comments in the August 25th Vestnik; he expressed the feeling of most of the people — past and present who have spent so much time working to make SPJST what it is today.

For all you members and friends who showed up for the lodge meeting on August 14th, the Entertainment Committee wishes to apologize for the oversight and using that date in the newsletter that was mailed to all members the last week in June and for this reporter sending the same date to the Vestnik calendar; when the president decided to hold the meeting the second Sunday, it was too late to change the date in the Vestnik. I hope it never happens again.

Remember September 12th is meeting day at the lodge again so try and come to learn more about your lodge and what is in the works for a future new home for Lodge 183.

Remember, also Saturday, September 11th the monthly lodge dance and music will be by Silver Wings (country-western).

Happenings at Lodge 92, Ft. Worth So much has happened since my last letter that I know I will have to cut out a lot and make it short, but August was a very busy and exciting month for celebrations and birthdays. I believe everyone was born in August, including my husband, Albert, Louis Kubala (his brother), Brother John Murphy also was a year older, Brother Carl Zich had a few dozen ones, Selma Holicka had a birthday, too; she used to help me at the National Hall when Albert and I managed it; she was a great helper. I hope all of you had a "Happy Birthday." Brother Rudy Wruble celebrates his birthday on the same day Albert does, but this

time he Was in the hospital; Rudy don't do this anymore. Hurry and get well, for next August will be here before you know it!

Nancy Paprskar also had surgery.

We had another beautiful Polka Dance to celebrate all those birthdays. Czech Mates played for another fantastic dance. I saw Brother Rudy Chalupka and his wife, Justin, really enjoying themselves. We all had a real good time. We are having another Polka Dance Saturday, September 11th by the Czech Mates. We are all looking forward to this and we hope to see Viola and Charlie Dlabaj. (Viola is my cousin from Lodge 25, Ennis.) I found her at Burleson Lodge 180 at their anniversary celebration. (Viola will be in trouble now if she doesn't come to see us.) Burleson had a lovely anniversary celebration; the food and dance were great.

Our meeting in August was successful, as always. All the committees reported, and every one was satisfied.

Youth Leader Brother Gordon Hubenak reported on the youth activities. He took the youth to White Water and they had a wonderful time. We appreciate what you have done for them, Gordon.

The children's summer vacation is over, so back-to-school they go.

Mrs. Warren Bullock came to our lodge meeting and presented us with the flag that was draped over her late husband, Warren Bullock's casket. He was a retired military person from the U.S. Navy. This was very emotional because we can't tell her how much we respect her for this. Brother Bullock was a member of our Lodge 92 and he also assisted me with the youth club in the 1960's; he loved children. Brother Bullock and his wife never missed a Polka Dance and don't believe he ever sat out a number because he loved dancing so much.

After all the reports were given and discussions made, the meeting was adjourned and everyone rushed to the refreshments section and kitchen, which is always a delight to everyone. Following a luscious lunch the chore of washing dishes was facing us, but who came to our rescue? Brother Car, and the nerve of him, he had Christine drying dishes. Well, I saw my husband pass by the kitchen while he was heading toward the bar, but that doesn't mean much. Does it? He does the same thing at home, too.

We will see you at our next meeting Sunday, September 12th, at 2 p.m. Nancy, I hope you will be well enough to attend the meeting, and here's hoping to see Dona Hubenak also at the next meeting.

Lodge No. 4 Schedules Oct. 3rd Meeting Dear Members: Our lodge held its annual Family Day Sunday, August 8, 1982, at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville. A delicious stew dinner with trimmings was served at noon. Mrs. Annie Marie Vahalik gave the meal blessing.

After dinner, a short meeting was held with President Frank Zabransky presiding. He welcomed everyone, especially our guests, Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie M. Gebala and his wife and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Pokorny, also District VI Director Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta of Victoria.

Minutes of the July and August meetings will be read at our next meeting.

Officers' reports were given. CoYouth Leader Gaynell Chudej reported that several of our YC members placed at the District VI YAD held in July. They were Chris, Gary and Janell Chudej, and Tommy and Melissa Holy. Janell Chudej will go to State YAD. SL Vice President Gebala gave an interesting talk and slide presentation on the Czech people of Texas and their heritage, it was both entertaining and informative and it made everyone present proud to be a Czech!

Director Vanek spoke to the members on the current and upcoming activities in the SPJST. Members were reminded of the District VI fall meeting which will be hosted by our lodge in Moravia Sunday, October 10th. Ladies of the lodge are asked to donate cakes, pies or kolache for the lunch. The lodge will provide the sandwiches.

Drawings were held for door prizes which were donated by Director Vanek, winners were Eugene Mikush, Elsie Mascheck, Alton Chudej and Vernon Zak. The youth club's money-making project winners were Henrietta

Vanek, Toni Galetka, Linda Mikush, Lillian Rabel and Janell Chudej.

The rest of the afternoon was spent playing dominoes and in conversation. Refreshments were served.

The day was a success and enjoyed by all. Special thanks and recognition go to the various committee chairmen: namely, Leo Strauss — stew, Linda Mikush — kitchen, Helen Zabransky — tickets, and Jake Sandelovic — refreshments; also, thanks to everyone who brought food and helped in anyway.

Members are again reminded that we will not meet in September due to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Picnic for September 5th, and the Czech-Moravian Bretheren Church Social for September 12th.

Our next lodge meeting will be Sunday, October 3, at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m., as usual, since the District VI meeting falls on our regular meeting date.

Vice-President Helen Janacek presided at the business meeting in the absence of President Dorothy Morris; Lillian Mikulec, secretary, read the minutes. Helen reported that Mrs. Morris stated that all members going on the bus to Dallas should pay for their tickets by Sept.

14. The cost is $9.80 per person. All members are also urged to attend the, next 2 sessions to practice the songs on the program planned by Annie Jakubec. Martha Klusacek presented an invitation to sing at the Golden Heritage Home, but a decision was postponed until the next meeting.

The Choral Club sang "Happy Birthday" to Evelyn Hesse; and also recorded "Jak se má" for Elaine Gill of Michigan. Della Psencik had as guests, Ken and Doris Chaney of Dearborn, Michigan, Clarence and Miladie Jecmenek of Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Psencik, Jr. of Rogers and Albert Hejl of Rosebud.

By the time you read this, Martha Klusacek will have returned from her first airplane ride to Ohio; ask her about it.

Dear Members and Friends: All changes come about as a Natural Law of life just as we change our way of living with each change of season. Now that School Bells are ringing again, we know that our leisure summer vacations are over and the change to fall with all the atmosphere of excitement and expectancy has arrived.

Our Ladies' Circle was called to order by our President Mary Powers.

Minutes were read by Clara Marchioni and Mary Ann Krivanek read the treasurer's report.

We were happy to have Lillian McMillen, our sunshine reporter, back in our meeting after her hip operation. We were sorry to hear that Louis Belota and Rudy Wrubble were still in the hospital. We hope they are well and back home by now.

Our visitors were Mary C. Krivanek, and Bennie and Mary Pavey.

Our program consisted of travel talks given by Mary, Phyllis and Hermina Cihacek which consisted of a tour of different states and Mackinac Island. Mary gave a very comical talk on preparation for the journey before leaving home. This also took in the many frustrations of shopping and leaving her purse in a downtown store; however, fortunately she was lucky enough to recover it. Hermina gave an interesting brief of their journey across many states. The highlights being their trip to Mackinac Island on Lake Huron and Green Bay,

Wisconsin off Lake Michigan.

Phyllis added to the trip by telling about special places of interest that she enjoyed.

Flora Koci gave a short talk on her three trips to Nashville, Tennessee.

We were all sorry to learn that Anne Polk had sold her home and arranged for a condominium in Bryn Maur, Pennsylvania to be near her daughter and family. On behalf of our Circle, Hermina Cihacek presented a box of stationery with the admonition that she write once a week and let us know how she is getting along. We wish you happiness in your new home, Anne, and hope you will see us often.

Mary Cihacek will furnish the door prize for this coming meeting, but it was voted that, from now on, the host and hostesses will be responsible for the door prize.

Minnie Ruzicka won the door prize donated by Hermina Cihacek.

Mary and Don Powers are vacationing in the Virgin Islands with their niece, Frances Ann Proctor and her two children, Kala and Jason. They are visiting Don Gary Powers, their son, who lives there.

Kenneth and Mary Ann Krivanek spent three days at the Polka Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska. They had a wonderful time, meeting people, enjoying good food and dancing.

Circle of Czech Women

August 10th the Circle of Czech Women held their meeting. A total of 34 members and 9 guests were present. The guests were as follows: George Skotak, Wesley Tupy, Mary Kutlik, her daughter and granddaughter, Jonathan Reznik, Steve Belcher, Arnold Vrla and Julius Podhrasky.

Some of our regular attending members were unable to attend and were missed. Corresponding Secretary Rose Ann Parma's report was made by Mary Sebestik.

Anne Zvolanek gave the "Sunshine" report in the absence of Bessie Kalich. During the month of June "Get Well" cards were sent to Mildred Voss, Emma Pavelka and George Skotak. "Thinking of You" card was sent to Mary Stransky. In July "Get Well" cards were sent to Martha Dujka, Mary Stransky, 011o Graeser, V.O. Malooly, Ben Maca and John Bubak. "Sympathy" cards sent to the Pavelka Family, Martha Malooly and Libbie Slovak.

Our "Membership" Chairman, Alice Roberts, announced that we have two more new members.

It seems that the members thoroughly enjoyed their recent trip to the Nuclear Plant in Glenrose, Texas. They especially enjoyed their lunch at the "Nut House" Restaurant. Everyone seemed to agree they would like a return trip soon.

Mary Sebestik is to be commended for planning this trip. She spent a lot of time on the telephone I'm sure.

A brief discussion regarding our annual Christmas party was held.

Several places are being considered and will be discussed again at our next meeting. All of you members need to be thinking about where you'd like to have the party this year. It's really not that far away.

Congratulations went out to Aggie and her husband, Frank Mach, who recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. Aggie seemed to be bubbling with happiness at our meeting. We all wish this couple many, many more years of togetherness and good health.

Rose Noska and her husband and two grandchildren, Jeff and Julie, will be leaving for the Ozarks for their vacation.

Joe, Adell, and Laurie Vlk were in Florence, Wisconsin near Lake Superior last week visiting and fishing with their friends who own a cabin on a private lake. They really welcomed the cool change in weather Adell told us.

Zdenka Skotak and her husband, George, and Charles and Gail Cerny left for St. Petersburg, Florida to attend the wedding of Jennifer Cerny and Howard Donald Gage, Jr. What better place to go to a wedding than the beautiful State of Florida!

Anne Zvolanek, Mildred Cervenka and Bessie Reames gave some interesting highlights of their recent trip to Czechoslovakia. We all enjoyed hearing about their experiences and sightseeing.

Rose Urban is a great-grandmother once again! Her granddaughter, Linda Johnson, announced the arrival of Michael Joseph, born August 2nd. Congratulations to Linda and her husband, Leonard, and especially great-grandmother Rose, who went to Austin, Texas to see the newest pride and joy.

Alice Roberts won second place and $150 in the Bronco Bowling Individual Tournament. The sad news was that she lost first place by one pin and $300. This is heartbreaking if you know anything about the game of bowling. Alice is our lucky member of our Circle it seems.

She won the door prize (a lovely floral arrangement) at our June meeting. Sit by Alice at the next meeting and maybe you might get lucky.

Everyone has either been or planning to go on vacation. Mine will come 'a little late, but, hopefullly, will get to the World's Fair soon. I keep telling myself "Tis b gttler late than never."

After our meeting, we were served a very nice luncheon by our

School Reunion Scheduled Velehrad

The Velehrad School Reunion will be held Sunday, September 19, 1982 at St. John; this will take place on the third Sunday. All those who attended the Velehrad School, no matter how old you may be, you are invited to attend and spend the day with your old schoolmates. Also, all the teachers who have taught school there, and all the school trustees who served for this school will be welcomed to attend this reunion.

Let's make this a great one this year because we didn't have a reunion last year. I know that a lot of you are members of different SPJST lodges; we do not have your address or do not know where you live, therefore, we hope this notice will be of some help to you.

Albert Novak, Sr., 95, passed away in a Bryan nursing home Sunday, August 22nd. Funeral services were held from the Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan Tuesday, August 24th, with SL President Nick A. Morris officiating on behalf of the SPJST in the funeral home and at the cemetery. Burial was in the Bryan City Cemetery. Bro. Novak had been a member of Lodge 39, Bryan for almost 70 years. *** Anton Nekuza, Sr., 95, passed away in an Ennis nursing home Monday, August 23rd. Funeral services were held from St. John's Catholic Church in Ennis Wednesday, August 25th, with interment following in the Catholic Cemetery in that city. Bro. Nekuza was the oldest living member of Lodge 25, Ennis, having been awarded his 50-year membership pin two or three years ago. His policy would have endowed on September 19th of this year when he would have reached age 96.— NAM

John (Slick) Ordener grew a gigantic muskmelon in his garden on the Drake Estate on Highway 35 near Alvin, Texas. The melon weighed 26 pounds. Brother Ordener is a member of Lodge No. 88, Houston. (We regret the newspaper clipping photo could not be processed — Editor)

*** Rudolph W. Cervenka of 323 N. Lakeview Dr., Waco, passed away Saturday, August 28 in Dallas VA Hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday, at Wilkirson-Hatch Chapel in Waco, with VA Chaplain Wendell A. Russell and SPJST Editor Rudy Sefcik co-officiating. Editor Sefcik represented the SPJST Society.

Interment was in the SPJST Cemetery in Holland, Texas.

Brother Cervenka was a WWI veteran and was a retired real estate businessman, also farmer and rancher. He wrote a book entitled, "John Kohut and His Son Josef"— Czechoslovak Countrymen in Early Texas. Brother Cervenka was a member of longstanding at Lodge No. 66, Waco.

Head of the Youth Department Looking Back At State YAD Dear Members: Another State Youth Achievement Day at Temple High School is behind us and a part of history. Judging from all the comments, verbal and written, this year's State YAD went smoothly and it finished earlier than last year when a record was set. This was due to further "compacting" some of the awards and because of the excellent cooperation on the part of the youngsters/participants. We will more than likely use this same format next year. There were a lot of people involved in putting this State YAD together. It started several weeks and months prior to the event. I have no idea how many phone calls were made out of this office. There were many of them. We estimate that at least 50 telephone calls were made to secure 9 judges.

In case anyone thinks that getting judges is a simple and easy matter, they need to have the experience of getting these judges. Everyone has so many obligations and things to do. We are grateful to the 9 who took time out to be with us. They were all very competent. One judge called three times the Monday following to tell us how impressed she was and that we "outdid ourselves" in staging this event and that the youngsters were all to be congratulated and commended on their efforts. Another man and wife team stated: "My husband and I want to thank you and the SPJST organization for your generosity and for the opportunity of judging the handiwork of your fine young people. It was an honor and pleasure. We hope we can be of service to you again in the future."

The other judges made remarks in the same vein. One stated that while the performers were understandably not professional, that he was impressed with their obvious potential.

All the DYCs made favorable statements about the day. One stated, "I heard from the audience that the talent was good with a good variety ... The afternoon went well and we finished earlier than ever ... the day was a good day for our Society." Another stated, "I like the way the program was kept moving .. . we arrived home earlier than usual." Another stated, "I feel our State YAD was accomplished in record time with few hitches or delays . . . we enjoyed the YAD and love Temple."

No question about it, the YAD was another success. SYD Wilson has the results following this report.

We handed out 194 5-dollar bills as participation prizes. It is estimated that there were between 350 and 400 persons in attendance, including participants. This is about the same as last year, possibly a small increase. One of the unexpected "wrinkles" was the early departure of some of the judges. They had to be introduced during other portions

of the afternoon's program so that their resumes could be read and the audience meet them. This is the first time that three of the judges had to leave before they had a chance to be introduced. They were, however, given their gifts before they departed and they were introduced to the audience. I suppose that next year, one of the stipulations in getting the judges will have to be a commitment to staying through and after their introduction to the audience and being given their gifts.

Life is indeed a hectic proposition and all three had to get back to their businesses and obligations they had, so we couldn't very well fuss about that, since they did fulfill their obligations insofar as judging was concerned.

It is virtually impossible to stage an event of this size involving so many people without having a complaint or two. The complaints were taken care of according to the rules and the scoring and tabulation shown and explained to the parties concerned. There will always be those, including myself on occasion, who do not concur with the judges' decisions, but their decisions must stand as long as you have the judge system. About the only thing we can do when the results are questioned is to double-check the arithmetic involved and the scoring and if it is correct, the decision stands. While we may not always agree with the judges, how else are we to determine the standings of the participants?

We will be looking at some areas of talent competition and try to come up with a reasonable compromise solution.

We could not have put this "show" over without the help of many good people working backstage and out of sight in various capacities. We are grateful to all of them and they were introduced to you that Sunday. To all of the youngsters who came and participated in whatever manner, and to the parents who brought them, and all of the visitors, we express our appreciation. It was a good day and we salute the winners.

To those who did not win first place, you won by having the experience, and if your age permits, please try again next time. Remember that a winner never quits and a quitter never wins.

We look forward to next year's YAD. We hope you will too. In the meantime, be making plans to attend the State Royalty September 18th at Academy. The schedule of that event appears below.

They say that "no news is good news", but the news this year about our camps is that everything went extremely well, with very few mishaps or accidents. All the DYCs were very pleased with the way their camps went this year.

Speaking from a personal point of view, I'd like to think and hope that at least part of the smoothness was due to the guidelines that had been previously published and that were distributed - to all those concerned prior to camp. There really were no problems in some of the areas where we had had them before and we are grateful for that. Camping can be a wonderful experience and we believe that it was this year for all those involved. The only "incident" was a young camper falling on the rocks and requiring stitches in her knee. This was certainly an improvement over last year's accidents which involved a total payment by the insurance company of over $5,000. The movement of automobiles was strickly controlled this year.

We are going to work on the food area and see if we can't improve that a little.

That's about it—short and sweet, with nothing unpleasant or adverse to report. That's the way we like it.

To the campers, staff, chaperones, parents, DYCs, State Youth Director, thanks for your cooperation and your attitude. (I'm not forgetting about District VI which camped at Bastrop). We hope you enjoyed everything that was offered to you, both by your DYCs and out of this office. You can thank the SPJST, which made it all possible. We hope you are mentally preparing yourselves for camp in 1983.

A Recap of State YAD Congratulations to the winners of the 1982 State YAD at Temple High School on August 22nd!

Craft entries totaled 160 this year, with 86 participants. The craft items varied in design and structure with each displaying different ideas and workmanship.

The Beseda circles consisted of a junior circle and a senior circle with eight dancers in each group.

Talent competition was outstanding, with a variety of songs and dances from Broadway hits to judo and self-defense. Many favorable comments were heard throughout the day on the talent numbers.

All of this shows how hard the youth leaders are working in their youth clubs and that the parents and children are working to support their youth clubs. Keep up the good work!

The Youth Department would like to thank everyone who had a part in the State YAD. Some of you traveled considerable distances for this special day and I know you were late getting home, but you did put forth the time and effort to support your children.

To everyone who helped behind the scenes in any way and all the other jobs required to make this a successful day, thank you! Without your help, we could not have had such a smooth-running event.

A special thanks to Brother Nick Morris, our master of ceremonies.

He did a superb job of keeping the program moving along so that there was no unnecessary delay between contestants and the entire event was over earlier than ever before.

This year, we have 7 queen contestants and 5 king contestants with 7 duchesses and 5 dukes.

The following is a report of all first, second and third place winners at State YAD 1982, but before we get to that, I'd like to pass on a few thoughts to you about this day and competition in general.

The afternoon was not only completed in record time, but flowed with ease and without interruption.

This made it a pleasant and most enjoyable afternoon for everyone.

Many times it is difficult to agree with the judges' decision, but whether we agree or disagree is not the issue — someone must make the decision. Many times, in the final tabulation, we find that the scores are only one or two points apart.

The summer activities have come to a close. The only thing left is the Royalty to look forward to September 18, 1982, and the fall District III meeting.

District YAD, Camp and State YAD are over. They left us with many fond memories.

We all had fun at Camp Val Verde this year. There were 75 in attendance. Campers hope you had a good time, because without campers we would have no need for camp.

Start making your plans for next year: attend the required meetings

and do whatever is expected of you as a member. We will see you at camp next year. Eddie, Steven and Tina plan to come because your young ideas are always welcome.

I want to thank the chaperones for making 1982 camp a success like it was. Lodge 39 YC News The summer months are coming to, an end. It's back to school and time to get back to our regular routines. The last several months have been busy ones for our youth club.

We worked hard on our project and made a total profit of $278.00.

Mr. John Fegan of College Station, was our lucky winner. I'd like to thank each of our youth for all their effort in this project.

We hosted the adults of our lodge to a potluck supper at our swim party held at the TAMU Annex July 31st. It proved;to be an all-afternoon fun day ranging from egg toss to swimming.

Several of our youth attended the State YAD in Temple August 22nd.

This was a most rewarding occasion.

It was apparent that it took many people to make this day a success. It was wonderful to see so many willing faces working together.

What a better way of showing Fraternalism!

I'd like to thank Lodge No. 9, Snook, for inviting us to their swimming party August 24th. We enjoyed being with all of you.

Thanks again for your hospitality.

Our next fund-raising project will be a bake & craft sale to be held at the Post Oak Mall October 22nd and 23rd, You might want to start thinking of some good craft sellers, the time isn't far away. We will be asking all the adults of our lodge for both craft and baked goods donations. More information and details will be given on this affair at our next meeting.

September 12th marks the date of our regular meeting. We have a lot to discuss and plan at this meeting so please mark your calendars and try to be present.

By Robstown Lodge No. 117 Dear Members, Our youth club went to Landa Park in New Braunfels, August 12th. We went swimming, rode paddle boats and glass bottom boats; this was a district outing, and it is always fun at the park.

August 21-22 we went to Temple for State YAD. September 11th, the youth club will be going to a movie. September 25th will be our regular meeting.

After the meeting, a beach trip is planned to Melequete Beach.

Verbal prefixes.

1. Besides verbal adjectives formed from the passive participle (see lesson 49) we shall mention two more important types of verbal adjectives:

a) Verbal adjectives denoting purpose: psaci stroj — type-writer (machine made, intended for writing). These adjectives are formed from the past participle by means of replacing the final -1, by the suffix -ci (from imperfective verbs mostly).

Observe: §ft (to sew) — ici stroj (sewing machine), brat — hraci hodiny (musical clock), pfijimat (to accept, receive) — ptijImacI zkougca (entrance examination), zavfrat (to close) — zaviraci hodina (closing hour), mazat — mazaci olej (lubricating oil), koupat — koupaci cepice (bathing cap), eekat — eekaci doba (waiting time), myt myci houba (sponge; houba — mushroom), opakovat — opakovaci cvieeni (revision exercise), balit (to pack, wrap) — balici papir (wrapping paper), spat — spaci vagOn (sleeping car), holit se — holicf strojek (safety or electric razor, shaver)

b) Active verbal adjectives: jedouci vlak (moving train), vlak jedouci do Brna (train going to Brno). These adjectives are formed from the 3rd person plural of a verb by means of the suffix -ci (from imperfective verbs mostly).

These adjectives may convert into nouns without changing their form.

Ceskoslovenskou socialistickou republiku (CSSR) reprezentovalo osm sportovcil: Jarmila Kratochvilova, (beh na 400 metrC1), Tafana Kocembova (beh na 400 metrt), Zuzana Moraveikova (beh na 800 metrti), Helena Fibingerovg (vrh kouli), Remigius Machura (vrh kouli), Josef Lomnicky (beh na 60 a 200 metru), Jan Leitner (skok do dalky) a Frantiek Jansa (skok o tyei).

NejhodnotnejM vykon predvedla Jarmila Kratochvlova, kter g, ye finale zvitezila easem 49,59 sekundy, cot je novy svetovy' halovy rekord. Helena Fibingerova ziskala stfibrnou medaili

Na dosavadnich ttin g,cti halovych mistrovstvich Evropy v atletice ziskali reprezentanti CSSR 14 zlatych medaili. Helena Fibingerova, sama vybojovala pet zlatych a tti stlibrne medaile.
