GOVERNOR CLEMENTS SIGNS FRATERNAL WEEK PROCLAMATION

This is a picture of our new lodge home building at 3609 Preston in Pasadena, probably not up to par.

However, this is the front view but not complete as yet; there is quite a bit to be done on the front part of the structure. The building is closed in and they are moving inside now.

The sheetrock walls are due to be finished by August 7th; the plumbing is made up in behind walls and pretty well stubbed up.

We are hoping to be finished by about October 1, 1982; then, there will be some small details to be worked out and we are looking to

have our Grand Opening November 7, 1982 (Sunday), and we're hoping to have you, Rudy and Maxine, also anyone else from all our lodges throughout Texas who can make it on that day. (I just wish I knew how many to prepare barbecue for; this will be my first time to be involved in such a big doing. We're looking for a large turnout.)

We are going to have a large building, dance floor and all; the building is 120 feet wide and 175 feet long plus the two sets of rest rooms: one set on the left front side and the other set on the right rear side plus one-half set behind the stage. Soon, many members will be attending and/or participating at the State Youth Achievement Day — Sunday, August 22nd at Temple High School.

This year, your editor was asked to take pictures of the "first" place State winners at YAD; therefore, we are asking everyone's cooperation on this matter.

In this issue, SL President Morris has a complete outline of the day's schedule for you to read carefully, especially those members who are involved with State YAD and/or Royalty.

State Royalty, as you know, is held on a separate occasion, and this event is again reserved for a Saturday for the convenience of those having to travel long distances. The king/queen candidates, with their dukes and duchesses, will be representing their district Saturday, September 18 at Lodge 177 in Academy, a few miles South of Temple, off Highway 95.

We encourage and ask the membership to attend and support these annual affairs for the sake of your district's representative(s)! *** What is democracy that people are talking about? Is it as good as they say? Are all men really equal? Does everyone actually have the same opportunity to achieve fame and fortune? Are all these things true or are they merely erroneous statements?

We, in the United States, are citizens of a democracy, believe these truths to be self-evident. We take it for granted that here in our country, all men are equal, and that they have equal access to the ladder of success. We have lived with these

privileges all of our lives and to us they seem quite commonplace.

Privileges of the people in a democracy, however, would not seem so ordinary to a person who has toiled and sweated his life away as a slave in a totalitarian state.

Such a person has never felt the warm glow nor seen the bright rays of democracy's light.

Whenever your City or State asks you to be one of twelve men and women who are to serve on a jury, do you immediately make excuses?

After election day is over, do you say to anyone — "My, what an awful administration we have in this community?"

Or, perhaps, after a decision has been rendered in a court case, you are again talking to someone and you say — "Why, just the other day, they let that guilty person walk out of court. Why doesn't someone do something about that kind of thing?"

You could have voted on election day, and you could have served on that jury, you know.

These privileges are like muscles — you must use them constantly to make them become large and strong.

If you neglect to vote and squirm your way out of jury duty, you are giving up the precious rights that for many generations courageous men and women have spoken fearlessly for, fought for, and died for Even today the bitter struggle to preserve these privileges which you shrug off so lightly goes on in a foreign land where the very earth is soaked with the blood, and the ground is covered with the bodies of soldiers.

Remember those famous Americans who wrote the Constitution? They affixed to it a preamble stating that the blessings of liberty were to be secured for their posterity. Little did they think that we, their posterity, would give so little thought to what they devoted their time, fortunes, and lives to Let us look back over the history of our great country. First let us consider George Washington, the father of America. He devoted all of his energies to make America great. Think of Thomas Jefferson who helped draft the Declaration of Independence. Its importance is known to every American schoolboy of today. Remember Abraham Lincoln, who, through untiring efforts, saved our country from the brink of disaster.

What American today would have the courage and spirit, standing on a scaffold with a rope around his neck, to say, "My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country."

Nathan Hale did just that Franklin, Adams, Jackson, Madison, Monroe — the list is long the deeds are many. These men and what they did made America great.

These men were true citizens of our democracy. They did not sit back and take things for granted, they went out and earned their rights.

How about you — are you a citizen of this democracy of ours? A citizen is one who votes regularly and responds when their government asks for their aid. They are interested in the welfare of their community. They obey the law and respect the rights of their neighbors. They are, by no means, the perfect person but they are, by all means, someone who strives to be!

Dear Sales Representatives, We had a very productive July. The entire membership appreciates your helping us grow in strength. In reviewing this report, you will note we presently have 397 Sales Representatives, of which 217 have produced some business for us in 1982. With the year half gone, I hope the remaining 180 Sales Representatives who have not sold any insurance will procure at least one new sale each.

A special meeting was held on July 29, 1982 and Laraine Fitch was elected as financial secretary of Lodge 141.

Cottonwood Lodge Receives $200 From Its YC SPJST Lodge No. 6 held their monthly meeting July 30, 1982 at 8:30 p.m. President Robert Dobecka called the meeting to order.

Therese. Dobecka and Lanette Hykel led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Therese also recited the SPJST Pledge.

There were 19 members present and 2 guests, Monica Sodek and Cheryl Miller.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Barbara Hykel. They were approved as read. AB other reports were in order.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth club report. The youth went to the Rest Home, July 14 and presented their skit they entered at YAD. They also sang several songs.

They will be going to the Rest Home, August 11th. Sister Schuetz reported that the youth club did very well at the annual picnic. She thanked everyone who worked and donated items for the picnic. The club was selling tickets on a clock to be given away at the picnic and the lucky winner was Sister Bessie Petr.

The youth club presented the mother lodge $100 for improvements on the kitchen and they also'gave the bar $100. The club

4/VESTNIK-Wednesday, August 11, 1982 had a homemade ice-cream party, July 23rd and they will have a watermelon-cut after their meeting tonight. There are several events coming up that the youth club will be needing a lot of help on. First, is the annual West Rodeo Parade and following will be the float for Westfest Parade and the booth at Westfest. There are a lot of kolache to be baked for the Westfest booth.

Anyone wanting to help bake kolache Friday night are welcome to join us; also anyone who wants to work in the booth needs to contact Sister Willie Mae Schuetz or Sister Rose Uptmor. The youth members will also be dancing the Beseda at Westfest. Everyone be sure to make practice Friday nights. Melissa Mynar brought the birthday cake.

Kitchen Chairman Martha Monthei wants to thank everyone who donated items to the kitchen for the picnic and thanks everyone who worked in the kitchen Saturday and Sunday.

Brother Aubrey Uptmor gave the Board of Trustees' Report. The lodge will be having their booth at Westfest again and they will be serving the same food as they did last year. Brother Uptznor thanked everyone who donated items and worked Saturday and Sunday at the picnic. The picnic was a success.

President Robert Dobecka also thanked everyone who contributed to the picnic in any way. Your support and generosity are deeply appreciated.

The $10 progressive door prize winner was Samuel King (not present); $2 progressive door prize, Mark Zapalac (not present); and Edward Hykel, Jr. won the $2 door prize.

The next Board of Trustees' meeting will be September 10, 1982 at 8 p.m. and the regular meeting will be Sunday, September 12 at 3 p.m.

Anyone wanting to help bake bread or work at Westfest is welcome. If you are interested in working please contact Sister Lydia Dobecka at 826-5663.

Lodge Bila Hora No. 16 had their annual social at their meeting Sunday, August 8th at 2 p.m.

The ladies were asked to bring some food and refreshments were also served.

The regular monthly meeting will be held Sunday, August 15 at Linden Hall beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The youth club will meet at 1:30 P.m.

45.75 Many came, for the first time, to 0 enjoy the spirit and to fraternize. I wonder how many of our members 0 realize how much work is involved in 0 62 . 39 undertaking such an affair? And the 0 volume of work that is required to take care of that many people. It takes a lot of willing hands; that is a sure thing! For myself, I have not been involved in any huge under° taking for the lodge ever since the 0 Birthday Club Sisters gave up 328.72 baking kolache (thousands each month) and that is about 13 or 14 0 832.16 years ago, but this time I decided to 166.44 go and try to extend a helping hand for the advance food preparations 0 for Sunday. I arrived before 9 a.m.

74.00 and there were already several spry 0 members busy since 8 a.m.; by nine 209.48 the whole crew of volunteers was on 0 the spot with John Hilsher at the 432.66 helm to guide us through the bushels of potatoes, crates of 0 0 tomatoes, bunches of golden carrots, 0 red cabbage, celery and beautiful 854 . 75 heads of fresh lettuce. The work 0 went like in a factory assembly-line: There were washers, peelers and 0 186.60 cutters filling containers and storing them to keep them fresh for Sunday; 0 from 8 a.m. to a little after 1 p.m., 24 people were busy and tired, but jolly. The humor of these good0 242.70 natured members was a wonderful 0 sign of progress and made you feel 588.78 that you belong. The following 36.40 extended a hand to prepare for 19.77 Sunday: John Hilsher (he knows his business to manage these big 538.67 affairs), at his side his spouse, 685.42 Palmae, Alvin and Janet Raymond, 313.22 Gus and Ann Urbanovsky, Franklin 0 and Almeda Bravenec, Bill and 1, 273.92 Geraldine Hlozek, Mike and Kathy 1,691.85 Trefell, Harry and Lillian Finn, 0 Pearl Hanka, Pearl Hilsher, Kathy 509.78 Higgs, Henry Kite, Tim and Rosalee 495.47 Kostom and Karl Lindemann; all these, not only worked Saturday, 0 314.61 but with many, many others Sunday to serve over 2,000 people. Dinner 0 was served from 11 a.m. until? Our 0 devoted sisters and friends were 0 47.19 very generous with home-baked pastries and there was a variety to select from. For this the ladies deserve a gracious THANK YOU! u0 The Birthday Club Sisters took care 0 0 of the pastry table. The Czech 542.20 Concert Orchestra entertained the 1,032.20 guests from 12:30 until 2 p.m. The 1,333.45 social lasted 2 hours and, at 5 p.m., 532.71 the dance started with the LeeRoy 3 5. 78 Matocha Orchestra until 9 p.m.

I was reminded by Emily Bily that, in my last letter, I said she and her friend went to the Boggie's Nite Club in Las Vegas; that was wrong, it was her sister, Valerie Koh. Sorry!

I was glad to see Agnes Pederson up and around enjoying the homecoming Sunday; she still looks weak and will have to have a by-pass.

Agnes is going for a check up on the 10th of this month and then she will find out for sure; otherwise she is doing good. Odell and Agnes moved to a new location last week somewhere on 34th Street. Good luck; Frances Crossman, living in Temple, Texas, now, was also here with her daughter, Mary Frances Wahlberg; I did not see Mary's husband, Richard Wahlberg; he had some errands to attend to before meeting them. Thank you for the offer; I might take you up on it some day.

The last dance in the month last Saturday had a nice attendance; it was a dress code dance and the ladies with their escorts looked lovely. The ballroom music was furnished by the well-liked Leo Heinrich Orchestra. The committee for this dance was Joe Knapick in charge of the dance and his spouse, Katherine, greeted the arriving guests at the door. Helping Joe and Katherine were none other than our lodge President Larry Pflughaupt escorting the guests to their reserved tables while his spouse, Dorothy, attended to the ticket office. Irene Slovacek and her sister, Irma O'Conner, attended to the advance ticket sales in the lobby for the John Sullivan dance for Saturday, August 14th. At this dance July 31st, a special birthday was celebrated by Tillie Friedel; she was escorted by her friend Albert Zajicek. It was a surprise for Tillie; Tables 7, 8, 9 and 11 took part in wishing her well and good luck. During intermission, a variety of goodies appeared and a delicious chocolate-coconut cake, baked by Bessie Vasula, was enjoyed by all.

Just a reminder that we will celebrate our Fourth Anniversary August 22nd with a dinner and dance. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m.; starting at 3:30, you will be served _a traditional Czech dinner consisting of Czech sausage, brisket, parsley potatoes, sauerkraut and green beans; for dessert there will be vast array of pastries: cakes, kolache, cookies, and just about everything else. Czech Course Offered Dear Readers, To surrounding residents in the North-shore Area, including Sheldon, Channelview, Crosby, Highland, Houston, and Pasadena.

The San Jacinto College, North, on 5800 Uvalde, Houston, Texas, 77049 will have a Conversational Course in Czech. This course will begin Wednesday, September 14, 1982 and will be held for ten weeks Wednesday nights, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Every one is invited to take this course. The course will cost only $30 for ten weeks.

Jan (Hajda) Beard was killed in a tragic car wreck near Granger the early evening of Tuesday, August 3rd. At the time of her death she was attending Southwestern University and had won numerous scholarships. She had studied in France one summer and had been married about two years to George T. Beard. Jan is the former SPJST State Queen for the years 1975-76; her tenure was shared by State King Stephen Parrish of Lodge 74 Lovelady. Jan was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 20 in Granger.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon from the First Baptist Church in Granger, with burial in the Granger City Cemetery. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hajda, Jr., of Granger, are requesting that memorial donations be made to the Williamson County 4-H Adult Leaders Association in lieu of flowers. NAM ***

Central Texans Tour Western States Mrs. Louis (Christina) Kahanek of Taylor recently returned home after a six-state tour with her sister, Mrs. Louis (Sibylla) Stojanik, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stojanik and family of Austin.

They drove through a dust storm in the Panhandle on their way to Colorado where they visited Colorado Springs and drove to the top of the Pikes Peak to see all the

snow on top of the mountains, and PAVELKA REUNION they also drove to see the Royal The 1982 annual Pavelka reunion Gorge; from there they proceeded to will be held September 5, 1982, at travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to see the SPJST Lodge 35, in Elk. All desthe Mormon Tabernacle which was cendants of Joseph and Mary completed in 1867.

Pavelka are urged to attend and Their next sightseeing was to make this a most successful Nevada to Lake Tahoe on the border gathering. Each family is asked to of Nevada and California, then on to bring enough food for their family San Francisco to see China Town and their guests. FROM THE HEAD OF THE YOUTH DEPARTMENT STATE YAD—SUNDAY, Aug. 22, 1982 TO: All Concerned This year's State Youth Achievement Day (Talent, Arts and Crafts, and Beseda) promises to be another big day and milestone in the history of the Youth Department of the SPJST. If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or are in line before registration time is over. We are allowing more time for registration this year, but your cooperation is necessary because the people in charge of registration must then move on to other jobs. (The schedule for this day follows this report.)

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register.

The lobby for the display is rather spacious where you will be able to wait with your craft until you are able to register. If you have a large craft or several crafts to enter, get your relatives or friends to help you ahead of time. We will again have large signs designating the various craft areas.

Contestants in talent are asked to announce their own selections, but NOT names, lodges, or districts.

Remember that microphones will not hurt you so step right up so that you can be heard.

If possible, get your scrapbooks to your DYC or get them to the YAD during registration time.

We hope you and your club and your district are represented at this State YAD. Do not let them down. If you can't come, be sure to inform your DYC so that your ,.alternate or second place winner may represent your district.

Breaks will be spaced according to number of participants in the contest.

Important reminder to all: Please read or re-read ALL rules concerning all competition. Refer to the current rule book (Revised June 1, 1981).

See you at Temple High School on August 22nd! It is situated on North 31st Street, which runs parallel to IH 35. Traveling north or south on 35, take the Temple (or Adams Ave.) Exit and go north at the first traffic light, which is 31st St. The building is a large modern, brick structure, very prominent and easy to find.

(1st Place, Talent, Ind. 15-17, w/trophy) 1 pic (1st Place, Junior Group Talent Winners) 1 pic (1st Place, Senior Group Talent Winners) *** NEW YOUTH DEPARTMENT COMPETITION RESULTS PROCEDURE Effective with last year's State YAD, the following procedure has been in effect at all YADs — District and the State YAD on August 22nd, and State Royalty on September 18th of this year. The purpose of spelling out this procedure is to prevent unfortunate incidents.

Basically, the problem has been with the announcement of a winner or winners, only to find out later that the announcement was made incorrectly or on the basis of incorrect information. All DYCs and members of the Supreme Lodge have been notified of this procedure.

The decision on this matter was discussed and approved in the July 1981 Supreme Lodge meeting.

1) At District YADs, the first and most important step that is to be taken by the presiding DYC is when the tabulation results are brought forward to be announced that a recess be declared of however length necessary to double and triple-check the results to make sure that the results are correct and mainly that the announced winners are correct. This can easily be accomplished by asking the tabulation overseer to step to one side with the DYC and very quietly going over the results and verifying them. After this has been done, and only then, are the winners announced.

2) It will be publicly announced that any challenges or questions about the results must be made within 30 minutes after the results are announced. If the results are questioned or challenged, the DYC STATE POINT AWARDS and the tabulation overseer will 1. Top 10 Youth (on stage) 2. Top Junior of the Year (on retire quietly to an area (room) by themselves without showing the stage) 3. Top Teen of the Year (on stage) score sheets or the tabulation ALL YAD YOUTH PARTICI- results to the person or persons PANTS ON STAGE FOR GROUP challenging the announced winners.

PICTURE. PARTICIPATION No one will be allowed in the room PRIZES HANDED OUT AS ALL with these two individuals. After PARTICIPANTS LEAVE THE they have verified the results, they will then come out and tell the STAGE. NEWS FROM LODGE ROBSTOWN YC Dear Vestnik Readers, District VII had their once a year camp and it was super!

They had crafts, horseback riding, canoeing, swimming and a lot of other things. Every night they had a dance.

The little people went to bed from 11:00 to 11:30 and the others from 12:00 to 12:30!

It was so much fun. I hope they have a lot more!

—SPJSTLODGE 30 YC HAS SEVERAL DISTRICT WINNERS Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club attended the District VI YAD held at Taiton, July 18, 1982. Taiton lodge took an active part in the District VI competition.

The first place winners in Craft 69 are: Kristi Korenek, Stephanie Roye; in 10-12 — Marcy Dorotik, Linda Treumer; 13-14-- Jean Dorotik, Michelle Srubar; and 15-17 —Vicki Dorotik.

In Individual Talent, we have two. winners: Stephanie Roye won in the 6-9 age category and Kelly Korenek took first in the 15-17 group.

In Group Talent, the 15-17 group placed first and the 6-12 group placed second. Members of the 15-17 group included: Kelly Korenek, Michelle Srubar, Vicki and Jean Dorotik. Members in the 6-12 group included: Marcy Dorotik, Stephanie Roye, Jennifer Dluhos, Kristi Korenek, Linda. Treumer and Janna Dornak.

In the point system, Vicki Dorotik won "Teenager of the Year", and Jean Dorotik won "Junior of the Year."

Our Youth Club won first on our Scrapbook.

In the Royalty Competition, Marjorie Treumer, from Taiton, was crowned our District VI Queen and Stephanie Roye is her duchess.

I would like to thank all of the ladies who helped out in the kitchen.

I would also like to thank all of the other lodges that stayed and helped us clean up after YAD. We greatly appreciate it! I hope everyone had a great time at YAD and I hope to see everyone at State! But, most of all, I would like to thank our Youth Leader Mrs. Jerome Dorotik. I know firsthand that our District VI YAD at Taiton would not have been possible without her.

ROBSTOWN LODGE 117 YC SETS AUGUST 14TH MEETING Dear Readers, July 23rd, District VII Youth Club members went to Camp Val Verde.

We left Corpus Christi about 8 a.m. on July 23rd and came home July 27th at 5 p.m.

This was my first time at camp.

We all went swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, hiking and, in craft, we made a string art sailboat.

I would like to thank everyone who made it possible for us to go to camp this year and I am looking forward to going again.

August 12th, District VII will have their district outing at Landa Park in New Braunfels.

COTTONWOOD LODGE 6 YC DISCUSSES MANY EVENTS

Dear Readers, At our meeting camp was discussed; it will be held Sunday, August 8th until Wednesday, August 11th.

August 22nd we all go to Temple for State YAD when several of our youth who are first place winners will compete on that day.

September 4th and 5th, we will all have to work at Westfest. We will also dance the Beseda both days.

The youth club members and mothers will be baking kolache every Friday night until Westfest.

September 18th, Therese Dobecka will compete for State Royalty at Academy.

Six Flags trip is planned for October 10th.

We held our swimming party Wednesday, August 4th at the West Playdium pool.

Our youth club had a swimming party and picnic when we got back from camp. Thanks to the adults from the lodge for furnishing the food and drinks. We all had a good time.

I hope to see everyone at our next meeting.

LODGE 30 YOUTH ATTEND SUMMER OUTING ACTIVITIES ENJOYED BY Dear Vestnik Readers, LODGE 30 YOUTH The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their outing and meeting at the Dear Vestnik Readers, The Talton SPJST Youth Club American Legion Park. Fourth Generation Friendship During this year's graduation the high schools in Corpus Christi had nine valedictorians and nine salu-

tatorians: among them eight females and one male.

Incarnate Word Academy (Catholic) had a female valedictorian and its salutatorian was male.

Females are in the majority because their tendency is to be useful in their existing lives; one of these graduates known to me is Miss Frances Faye McDonald, the granddaughter of Mr. Edwin and Mrs. Betty Jurica, and the great-granddaughter of the late Charlie and Betty Holasek.

Frances was the valedictorian with a 97.5 average from the TulosoMidway High School and she received a $500 stipend from this school. She is enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin to further her education.

I am wishing her a very successful future in her studies.

Provazek-Crews Wedding August 7, 1982 St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple was the setting for the marriage of Michelle Gail Provazek and Robert Ross Crews. The double ring ceremony was performed by Father D. Murphy on Saturday, August 7, at 2:30 p.m. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Willie C. Provazek of Temple, Dr. and Mrs. James R. Chennault of Victoria and Dr. and Mrs. Lance R. Crews of Temple.

The bride was given in marriage by her mother and father. She wore a designer Victorian styled bridal gown by Alfred Angelo. The dress of knit chiffon with a lush palantine collar of lace had wedgewood embroidery accents and a cascade of wedgewood ruffles down the back to form the train. The gown was trimmed with seed pearls and crystaline beads. Her silk illusion veil was dress length and fell from a halo of French silk flowers -- orange blossoms, miniature rosebuds and seed pearls.

Daniel Plumley was maid of honor and Mrs. Janice Wall of Moody was her sister's matron of honor. Brides maids were Susie Crews of Victoria, sister of the groom, Cindy Rose, Cheryl Matous, Colette Pick and Candy Heisch, all of Temple. They wore dresses of chalie-dot, each a different pastel color. Joelle Wall of Moody, niece of the bride, was flower girl. Her dress was tierred ruffles of all pastel colors. Their hair was adorned with halos made of

daisies and baby's breath. Best man was Bruce Whitten of Clarksville, Kevin Provazek, brother of the bride, Keith Rush and Kyle Proctor, all of Temple, Geoff Hooper, brother of the groom of Victoria, Jeff Kalbe of San Antonio and Jesse Wall of Moody. Groomsmen served as ushers. Dustin Farmer of Temple was ring bearer. Bradley Matous served as Acolyte. Harpist was Serena Johnson. Bobbie Jean Chalmers registered guests at the bride's book.

The mother of the bride wore a silk chiffon dress in hues of maize and mint. Mrs. Crews wore a dress of beige silk chiffon and Mrs. Chennault wore a dress of chiffon and lace.

The bride's parents hosted the reception and dinner at Seaton Star Hall. Leroy Matocha of Fayetteville played for the dance.

The bride graduated from Temple High School and T.S.T.I. in Waco with a degree in dental assisting.

She is employed by Dr. Case, D.D.S., Pediatric Dentistry in Temple. The groom graduated from Temple High School and T.S.T.I. in Waco with a degree in building construction technology. He is employed by J. C. Wall Construction of Moody and Houston.

The groom's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Lance Crews, were hosts for the rehearsal dinner at the Captains Table.

After a wedding trip to Dallas, the couple will be at home in Temple. **aft

Antonin Dvoicalt, a Czech composer, teacher and violinist, was born in 1841 and died in 1904.

He is widely known as introducing the concerto form into Czech music.

His works reflect the folk music of his own country and of Americans.

His musical career was influenced by the spirit of Bohemian nationalism. He turned for inspiration from German romantic melody and harmony to the folk songs and dances of his own people. He assured his success as a composer with a patriotic cantata, The Heirs of the White Mountains. His Slavonic Dances and Rhapsodies also became highly popular. He charmed audiences with his use of fiery folk rhythms and lyrical melodies.

Dvotak wrote nine symphonies, but the order became confused, and the last five he,wrote are numbered as though they were his first five.

Dvotak's songs won great popularity.

Some of the best known are the 10 Biblical Songs and the seven Gypsy Songs, including the famous "Songs My Mother Taught Me." Born near Prague, Czechoslovakia, he became a violin prodigy, studying with the village schoolmaster. He

attended an organ school in Prague from 1857 to 1859. The Czech composer, Bedrich Smetana, established the National Theater in Prague in 1862, and Votak became a viola player in the orchestra there.

Later, he became a professor of composition at the Prague Conservatory.

He was appointed director of the conservatory in 1901, a post he held until his death.

From 1892 until 1895, Dvoilk served as the director of the National Conservatory in New York City. A pleasant part of his American experience was a summer spent in Spillville, Iowa, where many Czechs lived. He showed his deep interest in American folk music with the Symphony in E minor: From the New World. In this work he expresses the spirit of Negro spirituals. Dvoi-ak's love of American Indian melodies appeared in his American Quartet in F major and Quintet in E -flat major.

Dvorak made nine trips to England, where he was very popular.

He gave many concerts and composed several masterpieces there, including the exciting Carnival Overture.

package (8 oz) salad 3 green onions, macaroni chopped quarts boiling water 3/4 cup mayonnaise tablespoon salt tablespoons tarragon cups pitted`California vinegar ripe olives teaspoons prepared cup sliced celery mustard cup diced green pepper teaspoon salt jar (4 oz) chopped 1/8 teaspoon white pimientos pepper Cook macaroni in boiling water with one tablespoon salt, about 10 minutes or just until tender. Drain well rinse with cold water. Add olives, celery, green pepper, pimientos, and onions. Blend mayonnaise with vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper. Pour over salad mixture and mix well. Makes about 11/2 quarts.

The Compound Passive Apart from the reflexive passive (see Lesson 45) we can also use the compound passive form which is composed of the passive participle and the auxiliary verb to be in particular form. The compound passive can be compared with the English passive form.

KDE These 2 words are probably misused more than any other. We frequently hear, "Kde jede§?" This is wrong. To indicate the physical action of going somewhere, the word
