Golden Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Anton Pokorny celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, May 15, at the American Legion Hall with a dinner and dance. Music was by the Fritz Hodde Band. Celebrating the occasion with their parents were Mr. and Mrs.

Raymond Blaha of Jerrell, Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Gebala of Temple, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Saathoff and Mr. and Mrs. C. J. King of Pflugerville and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Delancey of Hutto, along with grandchildren, relatives and friends.

SPJST (LAM) CURATOR GROWS CANNED TOMATOES??

TRUE — Otto Hanus, curator of the SPJST Museum planted tomato seeds in cans months ago and now is treating all his friends to beautiful red ripe tomatoes this early into the season. Goes to prove "the early bird catches the worm," or in this case -- "the tomato".

Chairman Willie Wehring of Lodge 88 Social Night Committee sent three of his traveling ambassadors: A. J. Stayton, and Louis chairman; A. J. Stayton, and Louis Hanus to Brenham, Texas to perform a fraternal act of appreciation for a past member of this committee.

The special act of fraternalism went to our valued Brother, Wilber (Buddy) Henske who was being honored by presenting him with a beautiful and unique Bingo plaque, for his outstanding accomplishment and unselfish services he rendered to Lodge 88 Social Night Committee during his tenure as chairman of this committee, a few years ago while living in Houston, Texas.

Buddy, as we know him, is very dedicated to the cause of Fraternalisn in our Society. As a chairman of this renowned committee, for many years, Buddy Henske's pride, care, devotion and willingness to help, caused this committee to be of paramount importance to Lodge 88; it attained may successes by his astute leadership during his terms as chairman.

We, as members of the Social Night Committee and the whole SPJST Society, salute Wilber (Buddy) Henske and his lovely wife, Ida Mae, for being so dedicated to the cause of Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood in the SPJST Fraternal Society of Texas.

Buddy is not one who howls, but one who has a great sweet smile and justice to all; we do miss you, Buddy!

Miss Cejka On Dean's Honor Roll At SWTC Miss Cynthia Cejka completed her junior year at Southwestern Texas College at San Marcos for the 1982 season with a grade point 4.0000 making the Dean's honor roll list.

Cynthia passed 13 semester hours and 84 accumulative hours, majoring in counseling.

This summer she has taken the job of Proctor at the Baptist Academy in San Marcos and will also take some summer courses at SWTC. Cynthia is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cejka of Hallettsville.

Her mother, Lois Ruth Cejka is a member of Lodge Hallettsville No. 4.

WHAT IS A FATHER? FATHER'S DAY JUNE 20

This occasion was celebrated officially for the first time in 1910.

"Father's Day" was inspired by Mrs. John Bruce Dodd of Spokane, Washington. She wished to honor her father for his love and devotion in raising six motherless children.

This natural expression of gratitude and filial recognition of Father's place in the home has since grown into a day of remembrance that is observed nationwide. By Presidential recommendation, Father's Day is celebrated in June each year on the third Sunday of the month. *** If there is one gadget lacking in most American homes, it's a father. I mean the kind of father who was head of the house — who knew he was a man and acted accordingly.

With his disappearance, family life has become a kind of cheerful hobby, rather than a sacred accounting between man, the world, and his conscience.

In today's family, in which, father is a kind of public utility rather than head of the house, there is nothing to make any boy want to grow up.

Once, father was a model of the real man every boy wanted to be. Now, when he grows up — he's going to have to wipe the dishes! And mother has been shortchanged, too. She used to have a man in the house; now she has a somewhat larger baby.

It's time to cut the hooey and put father back at the head of the family — in charge of the minors, momma, money and the mortgage — unless he declines because it's easier to wipe a few dishes than to be a real man. *** The Southern District Sokol Slet held in West June 4, 5 and 6 proved very successful by all accounts and all the gymnasts and spectators proved to be real gymnastic and athletic sports all three days. The final day, Sunday, June 6, in the West Trojan Football Field with mass calisthenics and gymnastics with music by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of SPJST District III Director Sid Pokladnik was very impressive and proved to be a fitting finale to the three days of competition. We were honored to have ASO President Roy Zitny of Chicago present.

Box 85, West, Texas Dear Rudy, On behalf of the Sokol Gymnastics Association of West, I would like to thank you for the coverage given the Southern District Slet in the Vestnik. Sokol greatly appreciates the cooperation that SPJST has shown to Sokol West as well as the other Sokol units in the state.

Federal law requires that your employer provide you with a pension summary each year if you request it. If you are "vested" — (have been on the job long enough to qualify for pension benefits) — you can find out what the benefits would be if you quit work today.

Phone bills for most consumers are climbing an average of 1.8 percent as the result of a recent ruling by the Federal Communications Commission. The American Telephone/Telegraph Company was authorized to adjust its longdistance phone rates beginning the following effective day. The price of "short hop" calls — those crossing state borders but traveling 25 miles or less — rose the most, between 11 and 21 percent. Charges for operator-assisted calls and calls during business hours, even if dialed directly, also went up. The cost for most calls dialed directly during evening hours -- from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. — went down; the discount for such calls was increased from 35 percent to 40 percent.

BAYER FAMILY REUNION The descendants of John and Veronika (Smajstrla) Bayer and Josef and Peregrina (Mrazek) Bayer will hold their 27th annual reunion Sunday, June 27, 1982 in Kiawanis Park located in Victoria, Texas.

Kiawanis Park is located near where the major U.S. 59, U.S. 77 converge, also U.S. 87 comes near there. At the traffic light at Moody and Stayton, continue on Stayton to the Park near City Park, and the Guadalupe River. The main meat course will be barbecue sausage prepared in the park by the committee. All family members should bring enough of other prepared foods, salads and desserts that will go good with the sausage. Registration will commence at 10 a.m. Dinner will be about 12 noon. A short meeting afterward, games for old and young and music and visiting. Members may donate handicrafts, pastry, or whatever to be auctioned off for the benefit of the reunion. Plates, knives, forks, napkins, coffee, tea and other refreshments will be at the reunion. You all COME! Let us make this a great reunion!

From the President's Office Supreme Lodge Meeting and Referendum

Dear Members/Delegates: Among the many important Society business matters that came before the recent Supreme Lodge meeting was the matter of a referendum to the delegates for their action on two matters: 1) Adjust the mileage reimbursement to all those traveling on official Society business, and 2) Inaugurating a new insurance program (annuity insurance) for our Society.

A copy of the referendum being mailed to all the delegates to the last convention appears below. It behooves the general membership to study these two amendments and let the delegates from your respective lodges know your sentiments.

The delegates will note that in order for their ballots to be counted they must arrive here at the Supreme Lodge NO LATER THAN JULY 1st, 1982. Don't forget to sign your ballot and mark BOTH boxes.

Pursuant to Article 7(a) of our bylaws and which deals with a referendum between conventions and which stipulates that "Such action will be accompanied by an adequate explanation", we would like to elaborate just a little bit on the items that we are seeking the delegates' votes on.

1. In the last convention in 1980, the Finance Committee recommended, and the convention delegates 6/02/82 approved, the amount of 35C a mile for delegates traveling to and from ANNUALIZED the convention. The convention also PREMIUM approved the payment of 30C a mile for all those traveling on official 0 Society business, effective July 1, 0 30.74 1980, with the proviso that that 1,046.30 amount ". . . be increased each January 1st for the next four years 0 with the United States Cost of 1,219.53' Living Index as prepared by the 0 Bureau of Labor Statistics for 0 private transportation based upon 207.60 November 1st Cost of Living Index 0 for the next preceding 12 months, 347 . 65 effective each January 1st." (See pp.

264 . 15 14 and 92 of the Convention Proceed99.99 ings).

Pursuant to the above, the 0 Lodge increased the 229.28 mileage reimbursement to 340 in 30.00 January 1981 and to 380 in January 110.75 1982.

This means that everyone 0 traveling on Society business is paid 0 38C a mile. Projecting this trend, we 0 might well be paying 45e a mile by 0 the time of the next convention in '{) 1984. There's no level of government 639.94 or any business in the whole United 87.82 States that reimburses mileage at 0 anywhere near this amount. The 0 IRS allows 200 a mile for the first 52.24 15,000 miles and 110 a mile in excess of that.

4/VESTNIK - Wednesday, June 16,1982 Reimbursement at 35C a mile to the delegates to the last convention amounted to $40,500. Projecting the contemplated increases and the increase in delegates, transportation costs alone to the next convention could amount to approximately $70,000 and the total cost of the next convention, including these transportation costs, could well be in the neighborhood of $275,000 to $300,000.

We have to have conventions and the delegates and all of us have to get there. There have to be preconvention committee meetings.

Conventions have always been, and will continue to be, costly - that we know and expect. Remember, however, that there will be recommendations for other expenditures for the following four years premium refunds to members, refunds to lodges, various contributions and allocations, youth activities, salaries, administrative/ operation costs, certificate rate structure, and many others. A pie can have only so many slices or pieces and the size of each piece will be either smaller or larger, depending on how you cut it. A check was made with three other Texas fraternals and the mileage currently being paid is considerably less than what we are paying.

In their January 1982 meeting, the Supreme Lodge discussed, at length, the adjustment stipulated in the last convention in January of each year and reluctantly, based on the provision stated above, increased it by another 4C to 38C. Considering all of this information and data, the SPJST Finance Committee, in their meeting on April 10, 1982, recommended, and the Supreme Lodge subsequently approved, sending out a referendum seeking approval that the current reimbursement be decreased and set at 35C a mile until the next convention for all those traveling on official Society business. This should then serve as a reasonable basis for mileage reimbursement at the next convention.

2. Vice President Gebala has this urther explanation on the second item in the referendum: A special meeting of the Insurance Committee was held on Saturday, April 10, 1982, the minutes of which appear below.

In order to give the delegates of the XXIIIrd Convention a broader view of the data used by the Insurance Committee in making their recommendation to the Supreme Lodge and the Supreme Lodge subsequently calling for a referendum vote, the following is submitted: Rudd & Wisdom, our Consulting Actuarial firm, believes that a joint decreasing term certificate and annuities are a very timely and desireable addition to the SPJST Product Portfolio in that each fulfills a need found among a large number of our membership.

The joint decreasing term product does not create any by-law adjustments, however, the annuity program does.

Caution must be used in the administration of annuities in that the profit margin on annuities is normally low and, therefore, commissions paid and administrative costs must be kept to a minimum. We presently pay 8% to the lodges for collection of premiums. This cannot be done in

Called to order by Chairman Vrla at 10 a.m. Bro. Vrla introduced Bro. Morris to explain his recent letter to the committee chairman.

RE: Mileage: Now at 38C per mile and projectedly will probably go to approximately 45C per mile by the next convention, and also what the other fraternals are paying & etc.

Then Bro. Morris excused -himself from the meeting. After a rather lengthy discussion, Bro. Jerry Prochazka made a motion, seconded

by Sister Lillian Holubec, to set the mileage at thirty-five cents (350 per mile until the next convention.

The above is recommended to the Supreme Lodge to take action on this recommendation at their next meeting and send a referendum to the delegates of the last convention if necessary.

RE: Meals: To Whom It May Concern: The Finance Committee met April 10,1982.

The committee wishes to call attention to all concerned who serve the Society on the meal allowances set by the last convention.

GUIDELINE: Breakfast-$4.00; Lunch-$6.00; Dinner $8.00. Not to exceed $18.00 per day. This was a guideline ONLY. The recommendation of this committee read authorized

Bro. Vrla called upon Bro. Kacir Mikulas to our meeting. Bro. Kacir explained to our committee that the SPJST Employees Retirement Pension Plan is not in any violation with ERISA; - State or Federal Regulations. Bro. Mikulas made an explanation of the percentage amount of each participant's contribution and, in brief, the reserves that are necessary and SPJST's contribution. A discussion was held, with no recommendation to the Supreme Lodge at this time.

Fraternally submitted A. M. Vrla, Chairman Finance Committee *** MINUTES OF INSURANCE COMMITTEE SPECIAL CALLED MEETING, SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 1982 SUPREME LODGE, TEMPLE, TEXAS Brother Ben Jarma called the meeting to order at 9:32 a.m.

The following members were present: Cecil Dickson, District 1; Willie Kohutek, District 2; Ben Jarma, District 3; Raymond Pavliska, District 4; Helen Hegwood, District 5; Jerome Hlavaty, District 6.

Brother Roy Hranicky representing District 7 was not present, therefore, could not vote, but did have correspondence with Chairman Ben Jarma by mail and spoke to Vice-Chairman Cecil Dickson on the WATS Line expressing his views on the issues at hand.

Brother Jarma then asked Vice President Gebala to introduce our new legal advisor Sidney Kacir and to discuss the reasons for this special meeting. Brother Gebala then discussed a proposed annuity program for the SPJST. He also gave each member of the committee a packet of information for future reference in the committee's work.

Annuities were discussed in length with all pro's and con's and their feasibilities for the entire membership of the SPJST. An informational letter provided by the Actuary David Huff was read by Vice President Gebala. This letter concerned a recommendation for accepting the Annuity Program as a means of the SPJST keeping up with the changing times of the 80's.

Brother Gebala also gave us a detail of functional bookkeeping, records and all issues connected with this whole new program and that it would be a separate function from the Insurance Program.

The proposed Joint Decreasing Term product was also reviewed and discussed at length.

Brother Gebala recommended a change in the present recognition of the sales representatives from the annual sales social to a possible combination of the two (2) times a year seminars to include dinners and then to honor the sales representatives at their District Meeting and thereby eliminating the annual sales social Brothers Gebala and Kacir were

A motion by Brothers Kohutek and Pavliska to sanction the proposal to go into the Annuity Program. Said annuity to be available only to SPJST members and/or social members. If a new member, this member to be only qualified after being accepted at the local lodge level. All the details connected with investments, available monies to be under the supervision of Supreme Lodge to insure that only qualified representatives be authorized to handle this product.

Any rebate to the local lodges from the annuity program would not be feasible at this time.

That a joint decreasing term plan be added to our current available products as soon as feasible.

The above motion carried unanimously.

Brother Jarma thanked each member present and expressed his sincere gratitude for the extra effort put forth for this meeting since it took place the Saturday before Easter.

Dear Delegates: Article 7(a) of the By-laws provides in part that important changes between conventions may be made by delegates to the 1980 Convention.

1. The Supreme Lodge recommends that you vote to lower the mileage reimbursement to all those traveling on official Society business to 35C per mile until the next convention.

The Finance Committee has recommended this change.

The reason for the, change is that the Supreme Lodge and the Finance 0 Committee feel that the existing 98.15 mileage reimbursement is too high.

0 2. Additionally, the Supreme 0 Lodge recommends that you vote to 0 amend Article 33(b)1, Article 51(a), and Article 91(b).

0 The Insurance Committee elected 0 at the last convention recommends 73.05 that these amendments be made.

0 The reasons for the amendments 0 are to permit the Supreme Lodge to 0 offer a new insurance program if the 0 Supreme Lodge decides the new 0 insurance program is in the best 768.77 interest of its members and the 34.92 Society. The new program would be 0 to offer ANNUITY INSURANCE. If 0 the amendments are adopted, and 0 the Supreme Lodge offers 0 ANNUITIES, there would be direct 0 payments to the Supreme Lodge and 216.14 detailed record-keeping would be 0 handled by the Supreme Lodge. To 1,223.29 be effective and equitable to our 0 members in providing a competitive 0 return, no refund would be paid to 73.33- local lodges on the ANNUITY PROGRAM. of Slavic Languages At UT Acknowledges SPJST Support Department

Dear Bro. Editor & Members: The enclosed letters were recently received from Dr. Karen von Kunes, assistant professor of Slavic Languages at UT in Austin and pretty well speak for themselves. The two scholarships s he mentions were awarded to Miss Elissa Lynn Stuchlik of Nederland, Texas, and Joseph H. Mendenhall, Jr., of Victoria. Elissa Lynn was chosen as best student of first-year Czech and Joseph the best student of second-year Czech. Elissa Lynn's scholarship was in the amount of $150 and Joseph's in the amount of $200. The instructors recommended that the scholarships be used for educational purposes, such as tuition or the planned trip to Czechoslovakia later this year. The department also plans to distribute some of the SPJST funds for a Travel Grant to all the other students of Czech who plan to participate in the December visit to Czechoslovakia, sponsored and organized by the Czech Club at UT. I had the occasion to meet and speak with Dr. von Kunes at the recent Conference in Taylor and was impressed with her earnestness and seriousness of purpose, however, she informed me that she would be leaving UT and that Dr. Frantisek Galan, previously at UT, would be returning to Austin sometime this summer. Her future plans were not yet definite. We need to encourage the various instructors who teach Czech at the various institutions that the SPJST actively supports, in addition to the students taking the courses. The Czech Club at UT has been sponsoring the Conference (No. 9 this year) and deserves the support, not only of the professors and students of the Czech language, but certainly of the Czech element in Texas and those who are in any way interested in supporting, preserving and promoting the Czech language in Texas. It is not an easy task.

Every interested person is eligible to participate in this trip, and we would appreciate it if you would promote it in the Czech community. Detailed information on the planned trip will be sent to you late in summer.

SPJST Scholarship Program To facilitate a smooth transition into the SPJST Scholarship Program, the following information will be helpful to prospective applicants: 1) The first scholarship awards will be for the Fall 1983 semester.

2) High School students entering their senior year September of 1982 should apply between September through December 1982. All that must be accomplished at that time is the scholarship application form contained in the SPJST Scholarship brochure. (This application will also be printed in the Vestnik between September and December).

3) Upon receipt of the application at

the Home Office, (between September and December) a step by step procedure will be sent to the applicant listing the required data necessary for them to submit. All information received early or not in the proper format will be returned to the applicant without any action taken.

4) Application for college undergraduates (college freshman, sophomores, juniors) will adhere to the above guidelines.

The SPJST is proud that we were adults who took time to work at the able to institute this program. Our meeting was opened May 12th with President Ann Balusek presiding and she also led the Pledge to the Flag.

News From Victoria Lodge No. 32 The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 32 was held Wednesday, June 2 at the Citizens National Bank. President Mike Alhstrom called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was led by little Heather Spears. A moment of silence for our departed members followed.

Minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Adele Donalson and were approved. In the absence of Treasurer Evelyn Horelka, the financial report was read by Financial Secretary Adolf Motal.

The report was approved.

Mrs. Stefani Spears was accepted as a new member.

Lodge liability insurance was explained and discussed. It was decided to obtain additional insurance.

Progress reports were made by the committee chairmen concerning the Czech Festival to be held June 27 at the Community Center. Advertising Chairman Stefani Spears has contacted various radio stations and KXIX about the festival. There will be an ad placed in the Victoria Advocate. Katherine Wokaty told of progress with the Country Store.

Frank Rokyta told of being in contact with the Heart of Texas Czechs for the dance. Adolf Motal assured the members of the attendance of the San Antonio Czech Singers. Kathy Alhstrom told of final preparations of the Kitchen Committee. It was decided to have canned soft drinks this year for the children. The youth of the lodge will have a Wheel of Fortune and are having a contest to see who can sell the most door prize tickets.

We have 90 dozen kolaches promised, but could use a lot more-.

If any of the ladies would be willing to bake additional kolaches, please call Valeria Motal after 6 p.m. at 5751385.

The July 7 meeting will be a supper at the Kiwanis Park at 6 p.m.

Fried chicken will be furnished by the lodge and members are asked to bring a covered dish or a dessert.

This is done each year to thank all members for their help in making the Czech Festival a success.

There will be a meeting of committee chairmen to discuss final plans for the June 27 Czech Festival Monday, June 21 at 7 p.m. The place for the meeting will be given later.

The adult attendance prize was won by Frances Motal and the children's prize by Pam Donalson.

The next regular meeting will be held Wednesday, August 4 at 8 p.m. at Citizens National Bank.

This reporter and her husband, Alton, attended the barbeque held by the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance June 6 at Placedo Hall in Placedo, Texas. We enjoyed ourselves and were able to meet Mr. Vladimir Bily, president; Mr. Jed Walzel, secretary; and Mr. Sidney Mensik, appraiser. Being in that hall brought back many happy memories. My kinfolks would go to dances there and take my mother and me, that was at least 49 to 50 years ago. The Sokol meetings were also held at this hall. They were wonderful.

Lodge West No. 54 Holds Quarterly Meeting June 6 was the date designated for our quarterly meeting, which was convened at 3 p.m. by President Ernest Zahirniak.

All present members participated in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a silent tribute in memory of Brother Albin Kral, who died May 15th. The membership extends its sincerest condolences to his loved ones; may he rest in peace.

Minutes of the previous quarterly meeting and other reports were approved as read, and all correspondence was acknowledged.

Sister Agnes Volcik was reported as to have been hospitalized since our last meeting, however, she is convalescing at home. She is one of our over 50-year members, and we wish her well.

Several topics were discussed thoroughly and acted upon. One item was then tabled until our forthcoming meeting.

Lodge 54 was privileged to have several academic seniors graduating from West High School, who served in the officer's position of the former Youth Club; namely, Laurie Zahirniak, Randy Kocian, Sharon Picha, Greg Hutyra; and others who are also members of the lodge are Michael Maier, George Hanzlicek, Nathan Holecek and Marile Allen.

Although they learned in their growth in high school, how to accept responsibility, leadership and to desire vital attributes toward their future life, we hope their philosophy of life, concrete goals to live, help them enjoy life to its fullest.

Congratulations to all of you for your achievements!

After the meeting, a large number of members from the Sokol units in Texas gathered at the lodge for a social, after participating in the Southern District Sokol Slet held in West, which was indeed a huge success. Our compliments are extended to the newest unit, which took the lion's share of responsibility to host the 3-day event. In the two days I was able to observe the various exhibitions, my only regret was that more people were not able to witness our local unit's accomplishments and to see the more advanced gymnasts from other units, who will be going to Vienna, Austria to compete in the Inter national Sokol Slet in June.

Everyone enjoyed the Saturday's entertainment , by Harold Strand Orchestra of Waco at the West Rodeo Grounds where the Westfest is held every year during Labor Day weekend.

Sunday's program on the West Trojan Field was a beautiful and colorful exhibition with over 300 gymnasts, instructors, flag carriers and the Czech Folk Dancers of West; our local American Legion also played a part in the procession.

Sunday night's TV coverage on Channel 6 in Temple of the spectacular was very impressive, with all the participants on the field standing at attention while the various flags were waving, and while the American and Czech-Slovak National Anthems were played by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of

John Bigham, new member, was Robstown accepted into our lodge; a warm welcome is extended to him A discussion was held concerning the cleaning of the lodge hall in June.

anniversaries and birthdays, but this celebration is unique: daughter and son-in-law of Jake and Louise Jacob surprised them with a special dinner at Sonny Look's Restaurant on their 36th year of a successfullyoperated business. And, after dinner, another surprise by handing them a packed suitcase and a key to a reserved suite in the Ramada Inn for them to spend a night (just like a honeymoon); no question about Jake and Louise, they were really two surprised people. To top it off, Jake at the Saturday dance, celebrated Louise's birthday by taking 8 couples out to enjoy a delicious breakfast after the dance. Congratulations and Happy Birthday!

Two lucky boys, Gater Eugene and Charles George Simmons, grandsons of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Simmons, had the pleasure to accompany their grandfather to Washington, D.C. for a 3-day visit.

They enjoyed the sights and especially the changing of guards at the Arlington Cemetery. Hilda Krpec, their grandmother, met with a freak accident as she walked out to her parked car on the street in front of her home. Hilda tripped and fell, lucky she did not break any bones but was taken to emergency to have four stitches to close a cut on her arm. The 'shiner' on her eye stayed with her for several days. Thanks, she is OK now. Her mother, Anna Svestka, as usual, was more upset than her daughter, Hilda; both are fine now.

Two birthdays were celebrated and toasted by friends to faithful supporters of Lodge No 88: Kay Keating (her birthday May 18) and her friend, Alen Coppock, saw the light of day May 24 and the celebration took place at the dance Saturday, the 15th and Alen underwent a major surgery May 20th in Memorial South West Hospital. The surgery was successful and we wish you a speedy recovery for a reunion at Lodge No. 88.

Mrs. Katy Kurtin, age x93, had surgery a week ago at the Heights Hospital. Rita, her daughter, said she was doing fine. Last week Elsie Zalesky's mother, Mrs. Julia Fick, was taken to Sam Houston Hospital from the Golden Age Manor where she and her husband Louis Fick have resided for several years.

Grandson Gary Zalesky and wife, Mariam, attended the Splash Day Sunday. Minnie Bravenec, after 5 weeks in Heights Hospital, was released to go home last week where her daughter will take care of her until she will be able to do so for herself. Sister Willie Mae Ermis is also home from the hospital and doing fine without surgery. Jerry, her husband, said Willie Mae takes treatments with success. Glad to hear it!

Brother Frank Tymel is hobbling along on crutches, on account of a slipped disc; that didn't keep him from entertaining two lovely ladies in our Blue Room Sunday on Splash Day with refreshing drinks.

The lovely couple, Karl and Ora Nell Hassenbrock, celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary Sunday, May 30, 1982 in the Chandelier Ballroom of Lodge No. 88 with family and friend$ to enjoy the day with Karl and Ora Nell. The bride

was dressed in a lovely apricot-color chiffon gown adorned with a beautiful orchid. Karl was at her side and surrounded by their children to greet the guests: daughter Janice with husband, John Laasko, Judy and her fiance, Darrell Herms, (this wedding is scheduled for July of this year); two sons, Danny and Randy and also Mr. Otto Ringner, father of the bride, to finish the family circle; the 2-monthold granddaughter, Alsyen Kristen Laasko, was the center of attraction shown-off by her proud grandparents Karl and Ora Nell. Toasts were given all around; the bar was open for refreshments all through the evening and lovely dance music was enjoyed by all, a delicious buffet was served to 250 guests. The anniversary party was a beautiful affair; at eight, the guests parted with wishes to the happy celebrants Karl and Ora Nell Hassenbrock.

The floor show was good and the free dance lessons were quite amusing. At this dance, I was pleasantly surprised by Kenneth and Fay Vanway, a longtime acquaintance; I have not seen them in about 10 years and really was taken by surprise. It was their first time with us at Lodge 88 with friends surrounding Table No. 23. Thanks for coming and try to attend some of our special dances; you will enjoy them.

Brother LeRoy Drawe, age 64, passed away June 2, 1982 in a local hospital. Services were held Friday, June 4 at 11 a.m. in the Heights Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Craig Dahse officiating; interment was in Woodlawn Garden. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Drawe; mother, Albina Drawe; two daughters, Dianne Kingsley and Shirley Norwick; and 3 grandchildren, all of Houston.

LeRoy was the son of our late Brother Elo Drawe who was one of the first devoted members of Lodge No. 88 and his mother, Albina Drawe, is a member of the Birthday Club since the club was organized and Albina is not able to attend any functions but keeps up her membership and keeps posted on the activities. Our sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

Our sympathy goes out to Brother Vladimir Maudr in the loss of his wife, Ella Maudr, who passed away May 27, 1982 in St. Luke's Hospital after a lengthy illness at home.

Funeral services were held at Settegest-Kopf Chapel at 11 a.m. June 1 with Msgr. Derier L. George officiating. Graveside service and burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph's Cemetery at Ennis, Texas.

Survivors include her husband, Vladimir Maudr; sister, Ruby Krenek of Vanderbilt, Texas; sisterin-law, Mrs. D. Pokorna of Houston.

Sister Tillie Helmcamp, member of our Board of Trustees, took several days off to fly to Long Beach, California in company of her daughter, Jeanette, and son-in-law, Robert Eubank, and her grandson, Brooks Krejci Eubank, to attend the wedding of Dr. Robert Reinke, son of Dr. and Mrs. Tom Reinke of Houston. The rehearsal dinner was held on the Queen Mary; the wedding took place at the Marina and the reception took place at the Yacht Club. The 3-year-old Brooks Krejci Eubank acted like a real gentleman all through the social affair; coming back they stopped in Disneyland which, of course, was more to Brooks Krejci's liking and I am sure the grown-ups enjoyed it also.

It is not unusual to notice some things and overlook others just as important. With the size of our lodge and all the attentions required to run same needs many willing, unselfish members to give of themselves fully without promised compensation; such an individual we have in Joe Zuka. The countless and necessary jobs done by Joe are numerous and valuable. He is Tim Kostom's right arm; however, he needs him, Joe is on the spot without delay; for that Joe deserves a friendly pat on his broad shoulders. Our daughter Kem Kubala graduated into high school, so we have a few more years to go. Helen Kay Lindsay graduates from University of Texas in Austin; she is an honorary student in advertising and she is the daughter of S. P. Lindsay.

The Arlington Citizens Journal did an article about another one of our Lodge 183 members, Thursday, June 3rd. This one is about Ed's Automatic Transmission Shop at 4001-F South Belt Line Road. Ed Karl, a member of Lodge 183, operates the shop along with his son, Calvin. Ed stocks about 250 transmissions for almost all foreign and domestic models; in addition, the company carries AT 540 Allison transmissions for heavy equipment. also flywheels, universal joints and transmission mounts. The shop sells to individuals and acts as a wholesale business for other retailers who use Ed's services.

Word of mouth advertising from thousands of satisfied customers is what brings most of the business to Ed's Shop which is located just off of 1-20 in Grand Prairie, it may be a little further to go but he promises to do a good job. Ed says to call him last because his prices may be better than the rest you have called; his phone number is (214) 263-5915.

The SPJST is an organization in which members help other members, so if you have problems with your transmission give Ed a call, it will help his business and, in turn, he will give you a good job which will be helping you.

From the Youth Leaders TO: ALL INTERESTED YOUTH OF SPJST LODGE NO. 39, BRYAN Many in our lodge are not aware of our youth club. This letter should be able to serve that purpose.

At our last adult meeting in May, I was, elected the new youth leader for our organization. It is with much enthusiasm that I am taking this new venture. Although, at present our membership is small, we have some brand new ideas and BIG plans.

Our District Youth Achievement Day was held in Caldwell Sunday, June 6th. Some of our youth participated in this event. Remember, it's not always winning that's important but just the knowledge you gain in participation.

Our first meeting for the new youth year was Sunday, June 13th, immediately following the adult 2:30 p.m. meeting at our lodge home on Highway 21 West. I have outlined for you, some of the main topics on our agenda: I. Election of officers for the new year.

II. Reorganization and insight on the general merit point system.

III. Fund-Raising Project.

IV. Charity Project - Nursing Home.

V. Swimming Party - Date to be set.

As you can see, our youth club is building and has a lot to offer its participants. Our members not only participate on highly competitive levels as individuals, but also as a group or as a whole. This helps them learn the value of responsibilities.

Since this is the beginning of our new youth year, it is the perfect time for you to come and try out our club. The rewards are good. I am looking forward to seeing new faces at our meetings.

LODGE EL CAMPO NO. 50 YC NEWS El Campo Lodge No 50 Youth Club met May 19 at 7 p.m. in the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary.

The meeting was, opened by President Lori Henderson. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Pamela Brandt and Jodi Henderson.

Treasurer Melissa Brandt gave the treasury report and collected dues.

We had a special guest, Mrs. Janet Marek, our District VI youth counselor. The club presented her with a gift. She told the youth about the camp and the field trip to San Antonio and other items of interest.

She also brought a craft which the youth enjoyed making.

Afterwards we had election of officers and the following were elected: President, Michale Marek, Vice President Tammy Dybala, Secretary Jodi Henderson, Treasurer Pamela Brandt, Sergeant-at-Arms Darren Dybala, Reporter Lori Holub.

We had one youth visitor, Jared Dybala.

Susan Spacek won second place in age 6-9 in Science/Education; Tim Herzik won first place in the 13-14 age category in Constructed Items, third in Handy Miscellaneous, and third in Hobby Kits; Penny Spitzenberger won third in age 15-17 Science/Education, second in Home Arts, first in Foods, and first in Hobby Kits; Pam Spitzenberger won third in 15-17 Pictorial Arts, first in Home Arts, and third in Individual Talent; Danna Herzik won third in 15-17 Handicraft.
