The first cake featured a stork and baby with the date April 23, 1907. The second, a wedding cake, had Ben and Regina, March 25, 1940. The third had a Navy anchor for his time spent in the Navy and also the birthdates of Barbara and Betty Jean. The fourth cake featured the three occupations he held: A store in Meeks, Texas, a Ford tractor for his farming years and an SPJST Emblem for his time as Financial Secretary of the Supreme Lodge. The fifth cake had a big rainbow with 5 stars; each star had the name and birthdate of one of his grandchildren. The sixth cake had the Numbers "75" centered in bronze and yellow chrysanthemums. The elaborate cakes were designed by Barbara and homemade by Linda Hankins of Dallas. Everyone had an enjoyable time seeing friends and relatives from all parts of Texas who came to celebrate the 75th birthday of a wonderful man, my daddy. SPJST Member Receives The Highest Award

Alvarado Youth Named Valedictorian

Dr. Robert L. Skrabanek, a memwr SPJST -L:•dg=, No. 9, was recognized for a special honor recently at the Annual Texas A&M University Spring Faculty Meeting held in Rudder Auditorium on the A&M campus. He was presented the prestigious Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award for Research. The award consists of a plaque, engraved watch, and a check for $5,000. Skrabanek grew up in the Snook Community and graduated from Caldwell High School. He holds the B.S. and M.S. degrees from Texas A &M and the Ph.D. degree from Louisiana State University. He is professor in the Department of Sociology and demographer with the Texas Real Estate Research Center and the Department of Rural Sociology in the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. In presenting the award, Dr. Clint Phillips, Dean of A &M faculties, noted that Skrabanek joined the faculty in 1949. Although he has been a visiting professor and graduate fellow at five other prestigious universities and served as a consultant in three foreign countries, he has spent his professional life at Texas A &M. He has authored over 200 publications in national and international journals and books and is especially recognized as an expert in Texas demographics. The Dean of faculties further noted that in the judgement of colleagues, Dr. Skrabanek's productivity in demography makes him a national and international leader in his field. He also is the first A&M faculty member to have achieved the Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award on two separate occasions. The first one was an award in Teaching earned in 1955.

Mark HiXS011 was named the Vale 4-. 1-ie 1.982 graduating dictorian class at Alvarado High School with a grade point average of 4.21. Earlier, Mark was named a National Merit Scholar by the National Merit Scholarship Foundation and the recipient of a scholarship from the General Mills Corporation. President of the National Honor Society, he was also Feature Editor of the school's award-winning newspaper. As a participant in UIL competition, he won medals in state competition which included first place in headline writing, second place in editorial writing, and third place in feature writing; in addition, he was awarded individual achievement awards for editorial (first place) and features (second place) by the Interscholastic League Press Conference. On the varsity basketball team he was recognized on the All-District team and received the Outstanding Senior Award in Basketball from the school. Voted "Most Studious" by the student body, he was also selected Mr AHS by the faculty whose criteria included good citizenship, academic achievement and all around versatility. A member of the Alvarado Golden Warrior band for four years, he played first chair alto saxophone two years and was a member of the jazz band for two years. The recipient of a four year McFadden Scholarship, Mark will be entering Texas A &M University in the fall to major in aerospace engineering. Mark, a member of Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Hixson of Route 4, Grandview. He is the grandson of Mrs. Dona Hubenak, also of Grandview, and Mary Hixson of Fort Worth.
