Supreme Lodge Members Complete Real Estate Appraisal Seminar

The instruction was held on the 12th day of April, preceding the start of the quarterly meeting of the Supreme Lodge. The accompanying picture shows the "graduates" of the seminar holding

their completion certificates. Those completing the seminar were awarded 0.8 Continuing Education units. The instructor was Don Carter and the dean of Continuing Education of TJC is Charles L. Stout. (See accompanying photo.)

Wednesday, May 5th — Your editor had the opportunity to attend an insurance sales seminar in District III at Linden Hall, known as Lodge Slovanska Lipa No. 66, Waco which was conducted by State Field Manager Gene McBride, with the assistance of District III Director Sid Pokladnik, to a large group.

After learning additional informative and educational information, this editor was- convinced that we must have men and women who are willing to contact people and explain that our life insurance is something more than a membership in a Czech organization.

It is broader than nationality; it is something which appeals to humanity. We must have Brothers and Sisters who will find happiness and success in being our sales representatives. We must continue getting the right type of training to be able to challenge — competition.

Each district has held many seminars for the past several years for the sake of those who are interested in acquiring valuable information and learning of opportunities as a salesperson; these seminars, in essence, have produced a number of productive salespersons. The seminars are most effective, especially to our new sales force; this gives them a chance to start from the first floor.

The school of instruction, so to speak, gives them an opportunity to discover if selling fraternal life insurance is to their liking; they also learn what remunerations one should expect for his/her efforts. We also wish to stress that the selling of life insurance could develop into unlimited opportunities.

One thing we must : remember: a

trained sales representative is the bridge which connects our members and the non-members with the SPJST organization and with the services that the SPJST can offer, therefore, the sales representative is a most important citizen. The measure of his/her work is really the measure of service which is done by the SPJST. A salesperson's role is a position of responsibility; it means work, but it also means rewards. *** Your lodge needs your support!

Your lodge can do its work effectively only by receiving your help.

When we stop to consider what is most needed in the world today, as in all days before us, we come to the conclusion that it is the mutual understanding of one another, whether it is among the neighbors or on the international scale among the nations.

It is brotherly respect for the rights of individuals, and the spreading of mutual aid that form the foundation upon which the superstructure of a better world may arise.

These principles of human kindness are stressed in our gatherings.

By being reminded of these democratic principles, we are doing our share, in a small way, toward the achievement of that great goal — universal peace.

Brothers and Sisters: Your lodge needs your support! Only by being strong, can your lodge convey to the members the great moral teachings which are needed to make the world more like a star.

Therefore, we suggest that you, the members, attend your lodge as well as district meetings regularly and participate in all of its activities.

Every year we, in Texas, are confronted with tornados and we wish to pass on some of the safety tips: * IN HOMES — Stay away from windows and outside walls. Go to the basement or to an interior closet or small room. Get under something sturdy. * IN SCHOOLS OR FACTORIES —Move quickly (follow advance plans) to shelter areas or to an interior hallway on the lowest floor. * IN HIGH-RISE OFFICE BUILDINGS —Go to interior small rooms or hallways. * IN SHOPPING CENTERS —If available, go to designated shelter areas; otherwise, take cover in an interior rest room or small shop. Do not go to your car. * IN MOBILE HOMES —Damage can be diminished if the mobile home is properly blocked and anchored.

Consult your local or state authorities. * IN OPEN COUNTRY - Lie flat in the nearest depression with your hands shielding your head. Be alert for flash floods. * IN YOUR CAR —Do not try to outrun the tornado. If available take shelter in a sturdy structure; otherwise, get in the nearest depression or ditch.

During a severe thunderstorm or tornado tune in your radio or TV for broadcast of latest National Weather Service Bulletins. ***

District IV Honors Sales Reps

We asked that all SPJST Sales Representatives procure at least one (1) new member in April. Those eight-one (81) Sales Representatives who responded to this challenge have an asterisk after their name in this report and are listed again on the back of the Vestnik.

Director Stanley Broz hosted a SPJST Sales Representative social at Lowake Inn in Lowake, Texas.

Approximately 35 guests were present. A social hour followed by dinner preceded remarks by VP Gebala thanking the SR's for a successful 1981 Director Broz then presented awards to District IV top producers.

Following the social, most Sales Representatives then traveled to Rowena, Lodge No. 49 for a well attended district meeting.

I again ask that all Sales Representatives sign up at least one (1) new member in May and we will again recognize those that respond.

Excerpts from the minutes of the second regular quarterly meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST held April 1315, 1982 at the home office in Temple, Texas The meeting was called to order on April 13, 1982 at 9 a.m. with all Supreme Lodge members present.

MINUTES - The minutes of the January 11-14, 1982 regular meeting and February 10, 1982 special meeting were considered and accepted as presented.

CORRESPONDENCE - Several acknowledged were letters including a letter from a Czech language instructor requesting a grant to write a Czech language textbook to be used in a community service environment.

REPORTS - A motion was adopted that all Supreme Lodge officers' reports be acknowledged and filed for record.

OLD BUSINESS YOUTH DEPARTMENT - The proposed goals and purposes of the Youth Department were reviewed and approved, and action was taken on items brought up for consideration.

SPJST HISTORY - It was agreed that the final recommendation of the SPJST History Review Committee was to be considered by the entire Supreme Lodge before adjournment of the meeting.

SPJST CALENDAR - Samples of stock calendars were reviewed.

After discussion, a stock sample was chosen as the 1983 SPJST calendar.

A stock calendar will be less expensive than the custom calendar used in the past.

REAL ESTATE APPRAISAL COURSE - During the noon recess, certificates of completion were awarded to the following directors and other Supreme Lodge members who recently completed the appraisal course through Temple Junior College: Ben Trcalek, Henry E. Vitek, Cyril] Pokladnik, Stanley Broz, Louis Hanus, Matt Vanek, Thelma Hrncir, Bernard M. Gebala, Leonard D. Mikeska, and Jerry Mikulas. The purpose of the training was to update the directors on changing trends in real estate and further enhance their, professional traidifivi,o

4/VESTNIK - Wednesday, May 19, 1982 PRESIDENTS' SECTION - President Morris reviewed the recent meeting of the Presidents' Section in St. Louis.

LOCAL OFFICERS' WORKSHOP - The recently held workshop was reviewed and plans for future workshops were discussed. It was agreed that the Supreme Lodge officers were to formulate plans for a different approach for the workshops for consideration during the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING COMMITTEE -- It was agreed that the day-to-day operation of the computer was now the responsibili ty of Financial Secretary Mikulas, but the EDP Committee would remain intact for new applications and projects.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - The Scholarship Program rules and procedures were reviewed.

FOURTH QUARTER INVESTMENTS - The investments made during the quarter were ratified on motion duly passed.

DELINQUENT REAL ESTATE LOANS - Delinquent loans were considered and the recommendations presented were approved.

TELEPHONE SYSTEM - Bids from four different phone equipment vendors were received for a phone system. After discussion and recommendation, it was agreed to accept the low bid and discontinue the current lease arrangement. It was determined that the new system savings would pay for the cost of the new equipment in less than four years as opposed to the current lease arrangement.

LOAN APPLICATIONS - After discussion, the interest rate was set at 151/2% for new mortgage loan applications and assumptions.

The loan allocation for the quarter was set at $125,000 per district.

REO NO 160 - The contract and sale of the 5.16 acres in Williamson County was ratified on motion duly adopted CERTIFICATEHOLDERS ADDRESSES - Report was made that the project to obtain addresses for all members is progressing well.

YOUTH CAMP - The motion pass ed during the last convention relative to lease or purchase of a youth camp was reviewed. Previous extensive studies are being reviewed.

Recess for the day was taken at 4:30 p.m. until 9 a.m. April 14, 1982.

PRESS/PUBLIC RELATIONS AND FRATERNAL SECTION MEETINGS - Director Pokladnik reviewed information/ideas from the recently held NFCA meeting primarily concerning Society publications.

Vice President Gebala shared information from the presentations at the Fraternal Section Meeting.

NEW BUSINESS LAM - A proposed log cabin was discussed for the museum, a replica of the first log cabin built in Texas by a Czech family. After discussing the matter with Museum Curator Otto Hanus, it was decided that the log cabin be constructed on the westerly portion of our undeveloped property on a precise site to be determined by the Supreme Lodge officers.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - It was agreed that effective June 1, 1982, cost of district training classes be paid out of the District Youth Fund or other funds available from the district treasury.

After due 103.86 deliberation, it was decided to conduct a Referendum of the 0 delegates to the last convention to 0 amend By-Law Articles 33 (b) (1), 51 0 (a), and 91 giving the Supreme 0 Lodge the authority to implement 0 the Annuity Program if feasible.

0 REINSURANCE - It was agreed 0 that Lincoln National Life Insurance 0 Company be the Society's primary 0 reinsurer and General Reinsurance 0 also be used to reinsure Society 0 coverage.

328.72 CUSTODIAL TRUST AGREE0 MENT - It was decided to 771.34 authorize the Society to enter into a custodial trust agreement with a 0 Temple Bank for U.S. Government 0 74.00 securities as permitted by and provided in Board Order No. 29910, as 0 amended. This would make it pos0 sible for the Society to again invest 0 in U.S. Government securities.

432.66 HOME OFFICE BUILDING -- The 0 problem of roof leaks and condition 0 of the roof of the Home Office build0 ing was considered. It was decided 854.75 to obtain bids and choose the best bid and proceed with the necessary 0 work.

Cottonwood Lodge Preparing For Annual Picnic Dear Readers, The SPJST Lodge No. 6 held their regular monthly meeting, May 2, 1982 at 3 p.m.

President Robert Dobecka called the meeting to order with Darrell Uptmor and Kevin Dobecka leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Darrell then recited the SPJST Pledge.

The were 20 members present.

Secretary Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the previous meeting.

They were approved as read. The other reports were read and all in order.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth report. The Youth Club will be going to the rest home May 12. They will be making corsages to take to the residents for Mother's Day. There was a good turnout for the Easter Party. Sister Willie Mae thanked everyone who donated gifts and worked at the Easter Party. The bake sale, that was held April 9 at Leroy Bank, was very successful.

The youth, who are planning to attend camp, need to turn in their name by May 31, 1982, along with a certified note approving them to go; also the points and craft cards should be in by June 1st. Sister Willie Mae reported that she attended the seminar in Temple. It was very interesting and educational. The Youth Club is planning a Graduation Party for all the graduates. The party will be held May 12 at the Pizza House, after the rest home program. Keith Hykel brought the birthday cake.

Brother Aubrey Uptmor gave the Board of Trustees' report. The Board of Trustees voted to buy a PA system for the hall and for the picnic. Brother Ray and Sister Stella Perez will be in charge of the auction for the picnic this year. Brother Uptmor thanked those who mowed the grass for the lodge. The trustees also voted to have their booth at Westfest this year. The next trustees' meeting will be June 4, 1982 at 7:30 p.m. with the lodge meeting following. Cold cuts will be furnished for supper and each member is asked to bring a covered dish.

New member accepted into the lodge was juvenile member, Patrick Robert Kostecka.

President Robert Dobecka thanked everyone who worked at the District III meeting; the meeting was a success.

The door prizes were then drawn.

The $10 door prize - Eugene Hrabal (not present), $6 Anneliese Thielke (not present); and the $2 door prize was won by Brother Alvin Schuetz.

The next monthly meeting will be June 4, 1982 after the Board of Trustees' meeting, which will be at 7:30 p.m.

Lodge No. 50 will hold the June meeting June 2, 1982. A bicycle ride from the "Y" on West Norris Street to the Al Kutac's camp house beginning at 6 p.m. All members and youth who want to ride, bring your bikes and meet on the "Y". The Youth Club will furnish drinks and snacks.

The adult club will meet at 7 p.m. followed by a covered dish supper, so members, bring your favorite dish; meat and drinks will be furnished by the lodge.

Celebration In Store For Lovelady Lodge No. 74

Our regular meeting was held May 10th at 7:30 p.m. President Wilcox opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. The agenda covered all standard reports.

We had our Cleanup Day and Covered Dish Supper April 25th.

Those attending were: James and Creola Wilcox, Dorothy and Hughie Smith, Ben Erwin, Mary McInnis, Chester and Mildred Shmoldas, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Albright, Jerry and Linda Michka, and Mrs. Michka.

These dedicated people cleaned storerooms, covered tables, painted signs, cleaned fans and filters, and things that our regular janitorial service doesn't do. Hughie Smith built a new cabinet for our bar. Andy Fowler painted the SPJST letters on our building, and James Wilcox painted the signs on the gate. These few persons work hard to make and keep Lodge No. 74 a cleaner and better place to attend so, when you see these persons, tell them you appreciate their work.

Jodie Jay and the Silvertones entertained us May 8th with their fine music, and brought with them guests from North Ireland; they were Bridget and Mary Judge Omagh and Co. Tyrone. They had heard a lot about our pine trees and beautiful countryside, also our SPJST Lodge No. 74. We were happy to have them as our guests.

Plans are now underway for our Fourth of July and 9th Anniversary of SPJST Lodge No. 74's Celebration. We will have a youth program and one of the speakers will be our past SPJST State King Steven Parrish. Our Youth Leader Linda Michka promises a real good program. For all members there will be a free barbecue with all the trimmings followed by a free dance with music by Gary Josey Band. Guests

Holland Lodge Makes A Charity Contribution Dear Members: Holland Lodge No. 80 of the SPJST held its meeting Sunday, May 2nd.

President Bohac called the meeting to order at 3 p.m. All members were asked to rise for the pledge to our flag.

The president thanked and welcomed all the members to the meeting.

Roll call of officers showed all were present.

Brother Latham read the minutes of the April meeting. They were adopted as read by the secretary.

The secretary-treasurer also stated that the last payment was made on the new entrance addition to the hall.

New members accepted to our lodge at this meeting are: R. C. Hill, Jr., R. C. Hill, III, and Elizabeth Srannon.

The members present voted to donate $200 to the Holland SPJST Little League Baseball Club. I am sure the little fellows will be proud to wear that uniform with the SPJST emblem on the back.

All the reports of the various departments (that is financial reports) were good for the month of April.

It was decided to have a Cleanup Day at the hall Saturday, May 22 beginning about 9 a.m. This will be the day before our Appreciation Dance and get-together that we will sponsor Sunday, May 23 beginning at 2 p.m. when the doors will open.

This year, instead of our annual picnic, we will sponsor an Appreciation Dance. Here is the deal with each paid admission ticket to the dance: You will be given a complimentary ticket for a big barbecue beef sandwich free. The dance will be from 4 to 9 p.m. with music furnished by that good Joe Patek Orchestra from Shiner. I want to state that the Joe Patek Orchestra has played for our fourth Sunday in May picnic since 1949 when we built our first hall. I am also sorry to state that the Patek Band will no longer be playing after this year. Mr. Patek informed me that they will not take any dance dates for 1983. They have been at it since 1919, so since this is the last time this famous band will be here at Holland, we want to extend a cordial welcome to come and spend an enjoyable evening. Let's show our appreciation to the Pateks for their many years of Czech music.

The weather here has been rather cool for May. The nights are cold; not good for this little cotton that's just up; we need some warm weather for it. The milo and corn are looking good. The wheat crop will be ready to harvest in about 2 weeks.

Wednesday, May 19, 1982 — VESTNN/9 presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which the members stood in silence and tribute to deceased members: Ruth Jane Cook, Louis J. Maresh, Bill R. Rausin, William E. Schack, Mildred Subik and F. D. "Sarge" Allison, social member.

Secretary Clara Broz read the minutes of the April meeting which were approved as read and then read the correspondence. All financial reports were read and approved.

Youth Leader Joyce Mynar reported on the youth club meeting and thanked Brothers A. J. Stayton and Harry Rice for providing the youth with circus tickets.

Brother Tim Kostom reminded the membership of the Czech play "A Melody of a Czech Village" will be performed May 16th at 2 p.m. He reported the Choral Club performed at the St. Mark Methodist Church and the Rosenberg Czech Festival and they would only rehearse the fourth Wednesday of the month with the Concert Orchestra during the summer.

Brother Willie Wehring reported that, after a brief leave of absence we would resume social night every Thursday starting June 3rd.

Board Chairman Royal Warnasch reported a tremendous success on Clean-up Day with 80 people doing a lot of work inside the lodge building and out and thanked each for their hard work.

Czech Instructor, Brother William Souchek thanked the lodge for their courtesy in making a room available for the Czech classes and stated the second ten-week course was completed and believed they enjoyed the classes and learned something.

Reporter of Benevolence Sister Mary Kosut reported 120 hours and $270 in expense as charity work for April and 1,321 hours as volunteer work done by members at the lodge in March.

Members reported sick were Willie Mae Ermis, Minnie Bravenec and Vlasta Stasta.

Kitchen Manager John Hilsher announced that a roast-beef dinner would be served May 16th, day of Czech play, and a barbecue chicken dinner June 6th, Splash Day. Sister Louise Kadlecek reported distributing 57 premium refund checks.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 133 members present and "Happy Birthday" was usng to members having birthdays. Door prize winners were Sisters Clara Broz, Evelyn Vornsand and Brother Tom Jecmenek with Libert Savings prize winner Sister Maria Kostomlosky.

Refreshments were provided by Sister and Brother Johnny Broz in honor of their anniversary.

Our next monthly meeting will be held June 14th at 7:30 p.m. with covered dish supper before the meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Publicity Committee Lodge No 88 SPJST — SPJST

Lodge No. 88 News At Lodge No. 88 everyone involved in any way as a committee member, or just a volunteer helper to the elected committees is a valuable asset to our great lodge; without these, there is no way we could exist. Listening to the monthly reports of various committees you come to your own conclusion, and must admit it takes a lot of cooperation and mainly understanding on every individual's part and, especially, a lot of understanding and love for the lodge and fellow members. The 15-member Board of Trustees is headed by Chairman Roy Warnasch and each member assigned to a part of the lodge to perform necessary duties is like a household and thanks to the many skills our members of the board possess. Tim Kostom is an all-around mechanic and there are very few things that Tim could not repair.

Steve Kelly, a skilled tool-maker and retired as supervisor from Hughes Tool Co., lately repaired about 25 chairs by tightening the screws, to make them secure to sit on, and covered them with new coverings; he takes them home and repairs them in his garage. Johnnie Broz, his profession is the police force, is handy with the saw, hammer and ruler; he can fix, change or build whatever is needed. John Hilsher, I think he is a retired real estate-man, but, in cooking, he is a connoisseur; for our festivals his prepared menus are delicious, plentiful and, in one word: perfect. The other eleven also have their responsibilities; we will go into that next time, but these men deserve recognition and, naturally, the two sisters on the board, also. I urge every member to come out at least once a month and attend the monthly meeting and that is when you get the whole picture of the existence of your lodge.

Friday night dance, May 7 had music furnished by the Texas Brew, country-western style. Hosting this dance: in charge was Annie Vala and assisting her were Milert and

Evelyn Antrich and Bennie and Stacie Kocich.

Saturday's dance with the special music by Al Pierson was a sellout and everyone enjoyed the gala evening; it was elegant. Kathy Trefell was in charge of the dance with her husband, Mike, at her side.

At the door was Marie Spalding and her husband, Francis, helped Mike to seat the guests. Mary Schenburn took care of the cloak room and, in the lobby, Irene Slovacek with her sister were in charge of the advance ticket sale to the John Sullivan dance. Out-of-town guests were many, Mabel and Leslie Guyton of Franklin, Texas and C. G. and Ruth Renfro of Corsicana, Texas. In the Blue Room, I met Lou and Corky Chapman of Cypress, Texas, guests of Harley and Viola Cox; they were enjoying refreshments in the Blue Room, before the dance, served by our ever-smiling bartender, Nat. I am sure there were many out-oftown guests, but I left early and the floor was always crowded with lovely couples. At this dance, Homer Alexander was surprised, at his table, with a birthday song and request for a favorite polka and after that a birthday cake and lots of goodies. I know Homer appreciated the thought of his friends. Happy Birthday!

A beautiful wedding took place Saturday, May 1, 1982 in the Resurrection Church to unite two lovely young people in holy matrimony. The solemn vows were taken by the lovely bride Beverly Ann Dewer, daughter of Bessie Dewer, and groom Gregory Kitchen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kitchen. The reception was held in the fellowship hall with a barbecue dinner. The newlyweds left for their honeymoon, for 10 days, to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. They will make their home in Tomball, Texas. Best wishes for a long and prosperous new life.

This month the Choral Club had two guest performances: Sunday, May 2, the Methodist ,,hurch on Pecore, here in Houston, invited the Choral Club to sing in our costumes before their Bible class; about 20 participated. Refreshments were served before the program. (Sister Pearl Hanka is a member of the church and also our special Lodge No. 88 member.) Saturday, May 8, the Czech Day Festival is an annual affair in Rosenburg, Texas and the Choral Club (about 30 members in costumes) took part in the program, under the direction of Tim Kostom to perform for the huge audience.

The singers were accompanied by the Czech Concert Orchestra of 25 members, under the direction of Rudy Dybala; both groups participate in the annual Czech Festival each year. After the heavy rains, it turned out to be a most perfect day.

Sister Minnie Bravenec, in Heights Hospital, had quite a few visitors and we all wish for her to come home soon! Minnie is in Room No. 325. Jerry Ermis announced, in the meeting, that his wife, Willie Mae, will undergo an eye operation the next day. Willie Mae, we wish you a speedy recovery. Tillie lielrne' amp announced about Sister Vlasta Stasta who ails for quite a while and resides with her'daughter, Lillian Orth. To all these members, we wish well and also to all the others who do not know about.

Visitors at the monthly meeting were Victor Gerlich of Lodge No. 63 and Ann Gerlich and Lillie Janik; was nice to see Al Lopes in the meeting having his artificial right arm and doing real well; he was taking therapy for 3 months and still will have to for a while; he is a happy guy and we are happy with you; he was proudly showing off what he can do, that's marvelous!

Johnnie and Clara Broz announced their 33rd Wedding Anniversary and treated the membership with the cool refreshments after the meeting. Happy Anniversary and many more!

Ft. Worth Lodge No. 154 Announces June 13th Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

After our usual opening Brother Milan made welcome our guest, Steve Mower.

All the reports were approved as read.

Thank you notes were read from the Charlie Giesen and Claude J. Williams families.

Brother Milan explained the amendments we will vote on.

New members accepted are: David Guerney, Stephen Jarka and Michael Steinman; we welcome you!

Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan attended a banquet in Austin, Texas with their son, Talon, where their son, Rome, was honored as 'Gymnast of the Year.'

Congratulations, Rome! He will now be back home and we wish him success in his future.

Congratulations also to Talon who received a beautiful diamond ring for being on the NCAA National Champions Division 2 Football of Southwest Texas State College.

We also extend our congratulations to some of our members graduating from high school: Amy Jo Krupka, Cathy Schneider, Kelly Stoeppelman, Lisa Hopkins, Bobby Jo Clevland and Paul Milan. Best of luck!

Brother Joe and Sister Agnes Merlick enjoyed a visit with their daughter, Betty Mueller, from Miami, Florida.

Brothers and Sisters: Don and Rose Steinman, Joe and Carrie Milan, Jeanie Mason and I attended the District III meeting on a bright and beautiful Sunday at Cottonwood Lodge No. 6 It is always a pleasure to see everyone. We all enjoyed the meeting, the food was delicious and the hospitality was superb.

Brothers and Sisters: Mary Renfro, Jeanie Mason, and Don Steinman, with guests Rose Steinman and Bill Renfor attended the Sales Representatives' Seminar in Burleson which they enjoyed.

The Sokol gymnasts did fantastic at our exhibition. Everyone was proud of them. Now, they are getting ready for the Southern District Slet in West, Texas June 4th, 5th and 6th.

10/VESTNiK — Wednesday, May 19, 1982 Sokol Fort Worth will be hosting the 1982 National USGA Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center, 5101 Folwell, (Loop 820 at Campus Drive) for May 20-22. The finals will be Saturday at 5 p.m.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, June 13 at 3 p.m.

Our door prize recipient was Carol Sanders and she was not present.

Deai Members: Wednesday evening, May 5, B. J. Hlavaty, Gene Haveran, Inez Greenlees, Juanita Cote, Betty Hlavaty and I attended the sales representatives' meeting along with members of Lodges 92, 154 and 180; it was a very informative meeting held by State Field Manager Gene McBride and District III Director Sid Pokladnik. They told us a lot about how the new computer system is handling information that is being fed into it, and how sales commissions will be paid to the sales rep resentatives; also Gene McBride pointed out some of the mistakes that have been made on the applications in the past. Gene also told us about the awards that will be given out to the sales representatives who sell the most insurance this year I would like to thank Lodge No. 180, in behalf of all of the Lodge No. 183 members who attended, for hosting the meeting and for the friendliness and fraternalism shown by its members. After the meeting, sandwiches, coffee and cold drinks were served; it was enjoyed by all.

Saturday night, May 8, the Moravian Memory Makers Band made their debut at our lodge and a great time was had by all of those who were there. I told you about raising the roof in my last article; I believe we did! The building seemed to be at least 6 inches bigger before the night was over. Everybody was dancing and enjoying themselves and, the music was great; those young players really have a good band, so, if anyone would like to hire a good Czech band to play for your dancing pleasure, this band is highly recommended by everyone present;

General membership meeting was held April 18th with 57 members present. Secretary's minutes were read and approved and treasurer's report was approved. Several pieces of correspondence were read.

Motion was passed to send a representative from our lodge to the Taylor May Fete May 2nd.

It was reported that social games will begin April 20th with a pot of $500. Choral Club News

The Seaton Choral Club met at the Southland Villa Nursing Home and brought an hour of Czech and English songs to the residents who thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Those singing were: Dorothy Pechal, Martha Klusacek, Georgia Sodek, Laverne Vanicek, Della Psencik, Agnes Schiller, Marie Holik, Otto Hanus, Lillian Kosarek, Helen and Henry Janacek, our accompanist, and Annie Jakubec, our song leader.

The Seaton Choral Club sang on the program of the Killeen Centennial Celebration Saturday, May 8 and were treated royally by the Czech Committee. Many ethnic groups were presented on the program. INTRODUCTION The following is the last of three guidelines that will be in effect for this year's SPJST camps. These guidelines were drawn up the latter part of 1981 and the early part of 1982, with input from many people who actively work with our youth at camp.

These guidelines were distributed to all those present at the recent Youth Leaders' Retreat here at the Home Office. We have a supply of them here in the Home Office printed in booklet form, however, they are reprinted here for the information of all concerned.

Save this issue for future reference, as well as the last two issues. Although the staff is hired out of this office, it might be well for everyone involved to know what their duties are and what is expected of them.

Fraternally, Nick A. Morris President and Head of the Youth Dep Guidelines For Staff At SPJST Camps We are pleased that you agreed to be part of the staff at this year's SPJST camp. We value your assistance and devotion to duty. We have tried to select you on that basis. We think that you are aware of the fact that you have a big responsibility. It is also assumed that you enjoy being around young people or you would not have accepted the assignment; if not this experience will probably not be a happy one for you because that is what it's all about — young people.

The camping experience should be a happy and relaxing experience for everyone involved. It is not a variation or continuation of school -that ended last May — and it should not be a rigid disciplinary type of atmosphere. At the same time, there are certain limitations and rules of conduct and behavior that must be adhered to in order to have a well organized and orderly camp.

Discipline is as much ALLOWING a young person to do something as it is forbidding them to do something.

Discipline is not all don'ts. As a staff member, we know that you will develop a cordial and pleasant relationship with the young people you will be working with, however, it must also be one of mutual respect and for you as the authority figure.

You can be firm without being harsh or authoritarian. You are the person who is in charge of your particular activity. The campers, chaperones and LITs will read in their guidelines that they are not to make any special demands on the staff members or request any special favors. Chaperones are being told that' they are not to tell you how to do your job because you were hired for that particular position and are being paid for that. They are also being told that they are not to "throw their weight around" because of the position they hold back home in their daily lives because there is no need to impress, you or the other adults with that fact and the youngsters really don't care because they see adults only as persons.

If you are a successful staff member and do your work well and diligently, the youngsters will develop an affection for „ yatt.and ;they will. long •remember, the ;experience,

You are being hired and paid by the SPJST, as are all other expenses connected with SPJST Camp. Your checks will be handed you at the conclusion of camp and will be signed by the president of the Supreme Lodge and one other officer. As stated in the contract that you signed with the SPJST, the SPJST reserves the right to verbally cancel this agreement at any time in the event of unsatisfactory services and you will be compensated on a pro-rata basis for the time that you had worked at camp. Such termination under these circumstances would have to take place after consultation with and agreement by the president of the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. Services may also be terminated in the event the camp is closed unexpectedly due to some unforeseen contingency. In this event, pay would be on the same basis as just stated above.

The following guidelines are in effect for the duration of camp. They are based on actual SPJST experiences at camp over a number of years.

1. To comply with the law, staff persons must be at least 18 years of age.

2. Stay with your job. Do it as ef fectively and as well as you know how.

3. When off duty, you are not to visit campers in their cabins and vice versa. Remember that being a staff member and a camper are two different things and carry two dis tinctly different sets of responsibili ties. Don't "overdo" the socializing and visiting. You are encouraged, however, to attend and participate in group activities during such scheduled activities.

4. Be mindful of your conduct and relationship with the young members of the opposite sex. You occupy a unique position at camp.

You fulfill a very valuable need. You are part of what makes the camp operation run smoothly and any deviation from your normal duties and proper behavior infringes on that 5. No alcoholic beverages are permitted at camp at any time under any circumstances by anyone.

6. It is acknowledged that staff members need a "break" in their routines at camp, so brief off-duty excursions to nearby cities to see a movie or visit a "Dairy Queen" is permitted. Attending public dances is not permitted. Otherwise, you are not to leave camp except in the case of an emergency, such as personal illness or helping to take a camper to seek medical attention. Washing clothes off camp is permitted, but this privilege is not to be abused.

7. Be diligent about attending any meetings called by the District Youth Counselor or other persons in authority and making any reports promptly upon request.

8. If for any reason, you cannot fulfill your responsibility in your particular position, let the District Youth Counselor know so that other arrangements may be made.

9. If you have an automobile, you will be permitted to drive it onto the camp premises, park it and not drive it during your duties at camp, except to leave in the case of dire necessity or emergency or as outlined in 6 above. Under no circumstances are you to give or offer rides to campers. The principal mode of getting around at camp is your feet.

Cars o4pickups will not be used to transport' persons from one location to another, except to haul campers, boats and equipment to the canoeing site and to cookouts because of the time and distance involved.

10. When driving onto and from the camp premises, the speed limit is 15 mph and will be strictly observed. Anyone driving in excess of this limit is endangering the lives of others and will be asked to leave.

We cannot afford to give you a second chance.

11. Staff members are expected to arrive at the start of camp and not leave until the conclusion of camp, or until dismissed by the person in charge, the District Youth Counselor.

(The State Youth Director is there in an advisory or assisting capacity.)

12. Young people, particularly sub-teens and teens are following a very natural behavior pattern when they sometimes demonstrate an attraction to members of the opposite sex. Without being rude or discourteous, you should ignore such actions. You are not in a position to respond in like manner. If the young person persists in such activity, you are to inform either the chaperone with that particular group or the District Youth Counselor. You should keep in mind that there is nothing unnatural about young people being attracted to one another, no more than it is for adults to be attracted to one another, but camp is not the place and your position does not afford the opportunity for romance. Save it for another time and another place.

13. In case of illness on the part of a camper while they are engaged in the activity that you are supervising, the first thing you need to do is to work with the chaperone with that group to determine the severity or seriousness of the ailment. It may be only stomach cramps, a headache, or as is frequently the case in the summer months, heat prostration, exhaustion, or some other relatively minor malady. In any event, if the ailment warrants it, the youngster should be referred to the nurse or whoever is in charge of treating illnesses.

14. Staff persons, generally speaking, are free after the responsibilities and duties for which they were hired are discharged. (See also 5 at bottom of contract page and 3, 6, and 9 above).

15. Personal long distance phone calls from camp phones should be made only in case of necessity and then only on the basis of them being collect to the number being called.

Any other arrangement will result in the cost of the telephone call being deducted from your salary.

16. For any other contingencies that may arise, consult with the District Youth Counselor in charge.

If he or she needs to they will consult with the State Youth Director, who is usually available in an advisory capacity. If the State Youth Director needs to, she can seek the advice and a final decision from the president of the Supreme Lodge who is the head of the Youth Department according to our bylaws and who has "direct control over all youth activities". (Art. 37(k) of the SPJST By-laws and Constitution).

17. All equipment and supplies for which you are responsible will be returned in good condition.

18. You are expected to display a willingness to accept a reasonable share of responsibility which may not be stated herein.

In summary, camp is a joint effort and has to have the cooperation of all concerned — campers, staff, chaperones and LITs, DYCs, State Youth Director and the President of the Supreme Lodge. Most of the rules pertaining to campers are set forth in the SPJST Rule Book under "Camp" and "Rules At Camp".

Certain stipulations pertaining to staff are set forth in the "SPJST Youth Camp Contract" signed by you and a representative of the SPJST which constitutes an agreement between you and the SPJST. These few points are intended to supplement those rules.

Guidelines and rules work only if people make and allow them to work.

LODGE ELGIN NO. 18 YOUTH HELP WITH COMMUNITY'S BEAUTIFICATION We are having a great time at our Wednesday night skating and social.

We also are having guests attending and we welcome them to become members.

Many of us have been getting ready for our May Fete which will be held Saturday, May 22 at 5 p.m.

Our May Fete practices are held Wednesday nights (one was held May 5), the other one will be held May 19 and the last one will be at 7 Saturday morning of the May Fete (22nd) at 9:30.

Our Youth Club has taken over the cleaning of the area around the Log Cabin in the Memorial Park.

Last Saturday a group met at the park where we cleaned flower beds, trimmed trees and planted a tree. It wasn't bad work and, afterwards, we had lunch and a lot of cold drinks.

Franti§ek pochazel z rodiny ueitele, ktery byl zaroveri vyborn3r'm hudebrakem. Jit jako malt chlapec zplval na Vim a hral na varhany a na Svet hudby jej ptitahoval natolik, zanechal pravnickych studil a venoval se skladatelske a dirigentske einnosti.

Slotil celkem devet oper, vytvotil hudbu k mnoha eeskym hram a napevy k vice net padesati pisnim.

Psal skladby komorni i orchestralni, svetske i cirkevni.

Franti§ek Skroup byl prvni, kde mel odvahu slotit operu na pfivodni desk text. Na skladatelfiv podnet napsal libreto basnik Josep Krasoslav Chmelensky. Tuto spoleenou praci, dvouaktovou operu z meganskeho prosttedi, nazvanou "Dratenik," ptijala kritika i obecenstvo s nad'Senim.
