Dime Box Lodge Held Its Monthly Meeting Dear Members and Friends: The meeting was called to order

by President Claude Flipper.

We had the roll call of officers with 8 present and 5 absent.

All reports were approved as read.

At the meeting it was discussed about raising the rent on the hall; effective as of April 18, 1982, the rent on the hall was increased by $25.

The adults also decided that any youth running for queen or king would receive $25 to help with expenses.

With no further business we had the drawing for door prizes: 1stAlbin Horak, 2nd-Nellene Spacek, 3rd-Erwin Ise lt.

The meeting was then adjourned for happy hour.

Lodge Changes Meeting Date Taylor

President Edwin Adamek called our meeting of Lodge No. 29 to order Sunday, April 18 at 4 p.m.

Ginger Wuensche presented the flag and led the membership to the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence in respect for our departed Brother Henry Kropp.

All officers were present.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read. The treasurer's report and Property Committee report were also given. Donna Pasemann then gave the audit report.

We had one member, Kathleen Ging accepted.

A thank-you note was read from the 4-H Club for having the Food Show at our lodge hall.

A motion was made that we donate to the Cancer Drive.

Youth Leader Melvin Steger reported 35 members, 2 visitors and 7 adults present. For their social they went ice-skating and saw a movie at the Mall. Brother Steger said they will not have socials for a few months because they plan a trip to Six Flags in the near future.

Door prizes were won by Michael Kaiser, Kathryn Adamek and Joe Jansky.

Our meeting has been changed to Friday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville will have their Fish Fry Sunday, May 16, 1982 at the Bleiblerville SPJST Hall located on FM Road 2502, with serving to begin at 11:30 a.m., also fish will be sold to go from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. In addition to the fish fry, there will be plenty of bread, catsup and chips to eat; all you want for $4.25 per adult and $2.25 for children.

We will also have plenty of cake, pies and refreshments.

The meeting was brought to order

by President Mike Ahlstrom. Jason Horelka led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag; this was followed by a moment of silence for our departed members.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Adele Donalson and the treasurer's report was read by Treasurer Evelyn Horelka. Both were accepted as read.

New members accepted were Sharon Chanek, Nicole Ann Zarosky and Charlotte (Mrs. John) Sharp.

William G. Safar was accepted as a transfer from Lodge No. 143, Inez.

President Ahlstrom gave a report on the SPJST Officers' Workshop held at Supreme Lodge Headquarters in Temple March 6.

Officers attending from Victoria were President Mike Ahlstrom, Vice-President Ella Arnold, Financial Secretary Adolf Motal and Treasurer Evelyn Horelka. Secretary Adele Donalson was unable to attend due to a death in the family.

Matt Vanek, District VI director, also attended.

Members were told that the Corpus Christi Czech Singers would be unable to sing at the Festival June 27. Efforts are underway to secure the Czech Singers from San Antonio Lodge No. 133. The Victoria Czech Singers will be part of the evening's entertainment.

Barbecue plates at the Festival will be $3.50. This will include the meat, beans, cole slaw, potato salad, jalapeno and bread. Coffee or tea will be served with the meal.

Response from local merchants for items for the door prizes and the auction has been very gratifying.

Monroe Kovar will be the auctioneer. One of Mrs. Mary Raska's beautiful quilts will be in the auction and another one will be a door prize.

Mrs. Ruby Rokyta and Mrs. Valeria Motal served the refreshments after the meeting. We had a delicious cherry cake and kolaches.

The next regular meeting will be Wednesday, May 5 at 8 p.m. at the Citizens National Bank. All members are invited to attend.

Lodge Games Party

Ellinger

Dear Members: The card and domino party held last March by the Ellinger SPJST Lodge was enjoyed by all participants, especially by those who walked away with prizes. Non-theless, the members voted to have another party in June, so it was decided to have it on the first Sunday in June (6th).

We will begin again at 1:30 p.m. with a short business meeting, and begin the domino and card games promptly at 2 o'clock.

The June party will be open to all members and their friends and neighbors. Each family is asked to bring some refreshments such as kolache, cake, pie, cookies, etc., and the lodge will provide coffee, etc.

Prizes will again be given to the top winners in each game category plus a door prize.

Please make your plans, now, today, and invite your friends and neighbors to come, also. It will be held at the Ellinger Fire Department building, again, and be sure to ask all_to bring their dominoes and cards if they have any.

A nominal donation will be asked of all players to defray expenses.

Mark your calendar with a notation for June 6th, and be there at 1:30 p.m. for a day of relaxation and enjoyment because there is not anything more relaxing and enjoying than the Ellinger SPJST Games Party!

Lodge

With sadness in our hearts, again, we part with a loyal friend and brother of Lodge No. 88. F. D. Allison, known to all his friends as "Sarge" went in his sleep Thursday, April 22, 1982 at the age of 85 years.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Brookside Chapel with Rev. B. Leroy Patterson officiating. Sarge was laid to rest in the beautiful Brookside Memorial Park Cemetery Saturday, April 24. Survivors are his wife, Harriette Allison; one daughter, Marilyn Pauline, and son-in-law, Charles W. Sikora, of Crosby, Texas; one sister, Carrie Lopp of Fort Worth, Texas; three granddaughters and one grandson. The weather was rainy and pretty cold, but many came to bid Sarge their last farewell. Sarge was well-known to our guests on social nights; he

greeted them with a smile at the door. While Sarge was able, he always escorted his wife, Harriette, to all the functions she was involved in. Harriette was always busy with activities; for 8 years she served the "Hlahol" Dramatic Club as director producing numerous Czech and English plays. While able, they never missed a monthly lodge meeting. We extend our sincere sympathy to Harriette and family.

Sister Mildred E. Subik died Saturday, April 24, 1982 at the age of 70 years in Elgin, Texas. Funeral services were held at 12 noon Tuesday, April 27 in the Brookside Funeral Chapel with Rev. Roland Chupik officiating. Interment was in Brookside Memorial Park Cemetery. Survivors are four sisters, Frances Srba, Rose Seawright, both of Houston, Texas; Bertha Cadan of Granger, Texas, and Annie Dana of Taylor, Texas and three brothers, Frank, Paul and Johnnie Volek of Granger, Texas.

May she rest in peace. It is noteworthy to mention that Mildred Subik was the daughter-in-law of our pioneers of Lodge No. 88. The late Jan Subik in 1920 served the "Hlahol" Dramatic Club as director and his wife, the late Bertha Subik, served as chairperson for the Hiahol Club and as reporter to the Vestnik.

Their son, the late Oldrich Subik, later married Mildred (Volek) Subik.

Congratulations are in order to Sister Wilhelmina Mendosa for her achievement of many years of work to graduate in Baccalaureate of Arts in Teaching; she will graduate May 1, 1982 at 10 a.m. Sam Houston State University will hold the commencement ceremony for the spring graduates of 1982. We are ve proud of you! Wilhelmina raised/her family and now she achieved her goal. Her husband, Alex, and daughters are very proud of her will-power to succeed in her dreams.

Congratulations!

Our Saturday night dance, with the Knights of Dixie entertaining with Ballroom and Dixieland music, had a very good attendance. The Hosting Committee was: Martha Baxter in charge of the dance, Amos Kadlecek held the box office while his wife, Della Kadlecek was in the cloakroom and taking reservations for the Al Pierson Dance for May 8, 1982 and Millie Manack greeted the guests. It was nice to see everyone dressed according to the dress code.

The Czech Play, "Melody of a Czech Village" is approaching fast; only one more Sunday and the following Sunday, May 16, the actors of the "Hiahol" Dramatic Club will be on the stage to give you a pleasant Sunday afternoon to enjoy and remember for a long time.

Please be sure and keep this date open for a delightful surprise from the participating performers; you also may have a delicious dinner of roast beef and all the trimmings prepared by Lodge No. 88's willing members, served from 11:30 a.m. until? Then you will listen to the Czech Concert Orchestra for one hour and, then, the curtain will open to present, to you, our actors to give to you their best Sunday, May 16, 1982.

The Blue Room Party held Sunday, April 25, called the "Blue Room Mini-Fest", was a success, very casual, and everyone present had a ball. The music by The Bavarian Village Band of New

Kadlecek Jr. including his youngest daughter and other musicians kept the guests in a steady whirl with all kinds of old dances; it turned out to be a very friendly get-together from 4 to 9 p.m. The food was delicious and refreshments plentiful with dips and snacks to carry everyone over to the main course of ham, potato salad, cold slaw, beans, garlic bread and pickles; this was catered by Willie Wehring. Congratulations to the Blue Room Committee!

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 107, Floresville was held Sunday. April 4, at the lodge hall.

President Bayer called the roll and all officers were present.

More than 200 people helped celebrate the 65th anniversary of Lodge No. 133 in San Antonio.

The minutes were read and approved, also the treasurer's report given by Sister Viola Mazac was accepted as read.

Brother Matula thanked all the members for the fine cooperation that was given the chairman and other officers in planning and helping at the anniversary party; the celebration was a very big success and the attendance was more than 200 people. We wish to thank all the District VII officers who attended, also President Nick Morris and other guests for helping us Director of District VI, Matt Vanek, was celebrate our anniversary.

Lodge President Matula gave a a guest at the San Antonio Lodge's report on the Publication Commit- 65th Anniversary.

This can save a lot of money which was proven in the first survey that was made.

News From Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena Dear Members, Relatives and Friends: A friendly "hello" to all of you from Lodge No. 172!

I must say, not knowing whether it is spring here or if it is winter on its way back or has summer so quickly diminished away from us before it ever came to give us some of our days to thaw out of what little winter, we have had (if anyone in our south wants to call it) winter or whatever to cool us off from our Texas blistering warm sunshine.

Best Wishes to all in good health whether you are in the homes, confined in hospitals or in convalescent homes recuperating from your misery. We, at Lodge No. 172, are constantly having all of you in our minds and prayers. No one knows what and where a person may be stricken so quickly from the smallest one to the biggest one because some day we all will fall; and, surely, as a reminder don't let a misfortune catch you without a pair of best shoes; be prepared with the best insurance known in Texas, our Heritage of the Czechs, the SPJST and don't say you do not need insurance for ours is the best for you and your family; next week may be too late; think about it and act quick!

Call a sales representative nearest you wherever you live in Texas, but most of all, if you maybe are living in Houston, surely, don't forget Pasadena, Lodge No. 172. Also don't forget: Highways are happyways and hot, and dangerous for you are on a frontline, so save a life at 55 mph for you are one, but do you know of your return and not enough insurance? So do leave something for your families.

Speaking of the beautiful and happy occasion here in and around Pasadena, so far so good all seems to be in better spirits and all the sick are recuperating very nicely; also, so far, we have had no accidental misery hearing from no one lately of being in bad health other than what was in the past about our three members; they are feeling better.

To me it still seems that Texas is the best yet by celebrating the Czech Heritage days, like in West, Ennis, Rosenberg, Hallettsville, Victoria, Houston, Wallis, Pasadena and numerous other towns. We had several booths at the Strawberry Festival from the 22nd through the

25th of April; some of us also wore Czech costumes representing the Czechs at the Fairgrounds and also we heard from KFRD Radio Station about Frydek, Texas that held their 34th celebration April 25.

Our socials and dances are to be bragged about for we are having very good crowds coming from various cities and towns; thanks to all who are so nice to participate and enjoy themselves with us for we like all of you; do come more often!

At our last dance we had the best dancing music furnished by the City Polka Boys who played variety music. At the door for that night April 17 our hosts were Hans and Sylvia Hugo; bless their souls, they were great; a job well done, thanks.

Our other dance was held April 24 with music furnished by Julius Tupa and his Mid-Night Shift.

May 1st we had Dan 'n the Boys playing variety music.

May 8th we will have Neal Hart back again so all of you come out and have an enjoyable time with us.

(On the 18th of April, all of us from Pasadena Lodge No. 172 members were at Hermann Sons Lodge to help celebrate Papa Edward Krenek's 90th birthday at our Table No. 25 while the Ray Krenek Orchestra played there during day and night at the picnic for Hermann Sons Lodge Home. Papa Krenek, many more happy birthdays and God bless you!

We want to extend our appreciation and thanks to all of you for your generosity and patronage. We are always inviting people from different towns and cities and states; you come and don't be shy; let yourselves be known. We are very proud to have you all; togetherness is where we share your love for we are a one-family group of people, so don't forget us!

Happy Mother's Day to all of you loving ladies everywhere for you are the life and the light of many. News From Pasadena Lodge No. 172 Dear SPJST Members and Friends: Our best wishes from Lodge No. 172 and we hope all of you are in good health and happiness. Thanks to our Almighty for blessing you all with good health and hearing our prayers for those who may be still sick and those who may have recently been under doctor's care.

Surely, at this time of the year, people are having free time of 3 or 4 weeks of travel from their companies to be able to take vacations by car or air; regardless of how you travel, be careful so you can enjoy your travel.

I am also lucky to have my vacationtime soon so we can travel wherever our wishes desire and hope to visit a few relatives and SPJST lodges in the vicinity during the weekend. For instance there will

be a Czech Fest at Rosenberg May 7, 8 and 9; if anyone is coming to attend these days, please wear your Czech costume and introduce yourself and what lodge you belong to. If you will wear your Czech costume, you will show your Czech pride of our heritage. I would love to see a big number of our Czech people attend the activities in Rosenberg.

During our Strawberry Festival held April 22 through 25 in Pasadena, our lodge won first prize by having the best-dressed-up booth and best-dressed Czech costumes in our SPJST. Lodge No. 172; we had a lot of members dressed up in their costume who were present; some of them were John and Esther Mikeska and Margie Lee Nelms. Everyone had a great time.

Esther Mikeska was called to the podium to accept a trophy on behalf of Lodge No. 172 which was presented to her Thursday by the president of the Strawberry Festival for being chosen by the judges for the best-dressed Czech costume and best booth on the fairgrounds. Thanks to all the judges of the 1982 Strawberry Festival for honoring our lodge with their selection.

For our lodge dance held also Saturday, April 25, the attendance was fair even though the weather was unfavorable. Thanks to all who came to enjoy themselves with us during the happy weekend. Brother James and Sister Joyce Kimmons celebrated their wedding anniversary, also Tommy Wallace celebrated his birthday with us at the Saturday's dance. The two beautiful hostesses at the door were Sister Mary Green and Sister Tinnie Coffman; both of them did an excellent job. We had many visitors from Houston, Crosby, Pasadena, Baytown lodges, and several other neighboring towns, including Texas City. Everyone had a good time dancing to Julius Tupa and the MidNight Shift and his fiddler Ernie Hunter, all of whom provided fine entertainment. Those of you who were not present missed out on a wonderful time; maybe next time!

Lodge No. 172 would like to extend the very best and the most happiest Mother's Day to all dear mothers everywhere and we pray for what they have accomplished during their lifetime, also to those who are resting in peace in their heavenly Garden of Roses for their love and kindness they gave us during their lives. We wish them continued everlasting peace and happiness and may their everlasting light shine upon them; our wishes also include all SPJST and other fraternal societies' deceased mothers.

May Activities Scheduled For Mid-Cities Lodge Dear Members: There were 8 members of Lodge No. 183 who attended the District III meeting at Cottonwood Lodge No. 6 in West, Sunday, the 25th; Betty and B. J. Hlavaty, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, Lambert and Bennie Mae Pustejovsky, Inez Greenlees and I. The meeting was well-attended by other lodges of the district and it was a very informative one; I learned a great deal about how the SPJST operates and I enjoyed it very much. Over the past 20 years or so that I have been a member of SPJST, I never bothered to find out what really went on at a district meeting or any other meeting that the Society had. I was, perhaps, like a lot of other members today: just going to socials and dances at the lodges and enjoying themselves and let someone else go to meetings and run the lodge. By attending these meetings you can learn, for yourself, how the organization is run and why it keeps growing from year to year. It also helps to explain to your friends when they ask, "What is SPJST"?

The youth organization presented a very beautiful program for our entertainment by showing us some of the Czech dances that they have learned. It is very good to know that some of our youth are still active in the lodges and learning these dances and keep some of the Czech culture alive in the United States. I learned, while traveling in Europe and the Mid-East that United States is one of the few countries in the world that we can still practice these cultural dances and languages without fear of being thrown in jail; also, without youth, the organization would not last very long; there is a need for young people to carry on.

We need to give the youth program a hand every chance we get and encourage them to keep up the good work, and doing good things for your organization and lodges, because, when you are doing it, it is getting done; when we say we will do it tomorrow, it may never happen because tomorrow we may not be here, and don't worry about what was done wrong in the past, just make sure that it never happens again and the organization will keep growing in the future as it has in the past.

I would like to thank all of the members from Cottonwood Lodge No. 6 for hosting the meeting and serving a very delicious meal; I believe everyone had plenty to eat and enjoyed it. Thanks, again, for myself because I really enjoyed it and also to be able to meet with you wonderful people.

After the meeting 6 of us: Daniel, Mary Ann, Lambert, Bennie Mae, Inez and I, riding in Daniel's van, took the longer way home (through

6/VESTMK—Wednesday, May 5, 1982 the country) and Daniel and Lambert showed us the farms where they were born and lived as kids; it was a beautiful and enjoyable drive away from the freeway and traffic. I believe that going in a group is the way to go to these meetings; this makes it a pleasure trip and helps save a little money and more people could attend meetings such as district meetings.

OK all of you polka and waltz fans! remember the dance for Saturday, May 8! The Moravian Memory Makers will be playing for your dancing pleasure. I understand that this is a new band and that they have learned at least 300 songs and they should be able to play your favorite songs; bring all of your friends, neighbors and relatives and we will raise the roof, so to speak; BYOB; beer o,ud set-ups will be available at the bar.

Remember, also, the special dance for May 29 when Jim Bochnicek from Nebraska will be here to play for us.

Our dances have been wellattended (which is great) for this is the way to have fun and enjoy yourselves. Just think how much better it is now than when we look back a year ago, but it may not be wise to look back! A Sunday School teacher was describing how Lot's wife looked back, and suddenly, turned into a pillar of salt! "My mother looked back once while she was driving the car," contributed a little boy at the back of the class, "and she turned into a telephone pole!"

Lodge No. 172 Sets May 12th Meeting Pasadena

Just a fewl lines of news from Lodge No. 172 (Rozkvet) Pasasena.

Our SPJST lodge sponsored a booth at the Pasadena Strawberry Festival and HOORAY!, the booth won Grand Prize for the best booth in the whole show. The parties involved did a real fine job of decorating and I guess most of the credit should go to Viasta Machann, Lillia Mae Peter, Frank Urbanovsky, Joe Krenek and Dan Berry; they did a fine job and we are very proud of them.

Our lodge President Dan Berry also signed a contract to build our

new lodge home 28 April 1982, with Powitzky's, Inc. of Pasadena; the construction should start in about 10 days and be completed in about 5 months, if the weather allows.

This is also an open letter to all members of Lodge No. 172 to get behind your Building Committee and officers with moral, physical and monetary support so that we can finally have a permanent lodge home that will be OURS. We will need monetary donations, and loans to make this project finally come to be.

Please read your lodge letter and do as much as you can because we need you, in fact, all of you! Please come to the next lodge meeting which will be held Wednesday, May 12 and learn more about what is going on.

Ladies' Circle, Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Many surprised faces were seen and many exclamations of "ohs" and "ohs" were heard as each member of the Lodge No. 92 Ladies Circle met for their regular meeting. There, inside the hall, were gathered several ladies with hats, hats and more hats ready to go on the heads of each member who entered. Calm was finally restored after being assured that we weren't leaving for an unknown destination, but that each of us were to draw a number and then select the hat to match, and wear it during the meeting.

Mary Powers, president, called the meeting to order and proceeded with the business on hand.

Clara Marchioni read a "Thank You" note from the Taylor Rest Home for a donation received from our circle.

Lillie McMillen sent a get-well card to John Murphy. We are happy that he is home now and doing well.

We were sorry to hear that Clara Marchioni's and Aurora Maldino's nephew was killed in a car accident in New Mexico during the Easter holidays.

During the Easter holidays the Paprskars and the Gregorys celebrated their anniversaries.

Helen and Mike, 42nd and Elizabeth and Joe, the 51st. Mary Botik celebrated her granddaughter's wedding, Susan Krupka to Joseph Beaty of Arlington. We wish them much happiness.

The program was turned over to Clara Cohen, program chairman, who turned out to be the "Good Fairy" of all the lovely hats we were wearing. "The Easter Parade of Bonnets" were now to be modeled by each member in front of the following judges: Barbara Tweed, Vera Ludwigs and Marsha Tweed.

First prize was won by Helen Paprskar, second by Clara Marchioni and third by Esta Belle Hubenak.

The door prize was won by Mary Saldana and donated by Mary Powers. Maggie Konecny will furnish the door prize for May and Elizabeth Gregory for June.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Joe Merlick, Minnie Ruzicka and Joyce Tesar. We hope they have many more.

Visitors were Vera Ludwigs,

Helton McWhitaker, Roberta Leonard, and Sadie Garwich, Barbara Tweed, Marsha Tweed and Janie Allen.

At the present time, Esta Belle Hubenak and Inez Krivanek are on a plane somewhere between here and Miami, Florida, where they will board their ship for a Caribbean Cruise. We will probably hear more about their trip at our next meeting which will be May 11th. I hope to see all of you then.

Maybe it was the weather, or maybe it was the time change; whatever the reason, the members were few but the songs were strong and sweet when the Seaton Choral Club members met Tuesday night to practice for their presentation for the Killeen Centennial Program May 8th.

Those present were: Dorothy Morris, Otto Hanus, Anne Kracha, Emily Stuteville, Ruby L. Bolton, Georgia Sodek, Helen and Henry Janacek, Lillian Kosarek, Agnes Schiller, Martha Klusacek, Eleanora Spanhel, Frank Spanhel, Annie Jakubec and Thelma Bartosh.

President Dorothy Morris conducted the business meeting; Thelma Bartosh gave an oral report of the minutes. Georgia Sodek reported a good time was had by all attending the Spring Picnic which was graciously hosted by Linda and Daniel Wilde in their lovely home near Flag Hall.

"All members are urged to make a special effort to go sing at Killeen so that the Czechs will have a good representation," urged Dorothy Morris, "the club members are to meet at Lillian Kosarek's house May 8th at 1 p.m. to car-pool to Killeen for the program which will be held at Condor Park. We are scheduled to sing at 3 o'clock, so come on, let's everybody go!"

The club voted to sing at the Southland Villa Rest Home May 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Lillian Kosarek reminds everyone that the membership dues were due on April 1st. "If you haven't paid, they are over-due."

If we stop singing the Czech songs, they will be lost forever.

Czech Class Report

Another outstanding year has come to an end for the Alvin Community College Czech class. The spring semester got off to a good start with three new members enrolling. Class members made excellent progress and are becoming very proficient in the Czech language. The instructor, Mr. William Souchek, made each session stimulating as well as challenging with the class members eagerly looking forward to each succeeding class.

In February many of the class

members went, as a group, to see the Polish Dance Troupe perform at Jones Hall in Houston. It was an impressive performance and was enjoyed by all who attended.

Plans are being made for a Czech language course to be offered for college credit for the first time at A.C.C. in the 1982 fall term. Mr. Souchek will be the instructor, and he has been in close contact with the college in bringing this project to fruition. It is hoped there will be a great response by the students and that the program will be a success.

The A.C.C. Czech Club gave scholarships of $300.00 ($150.00 for each semester) to each of two deserving students at A.C.C. for the past school year. Recipients of the scholarships were Ginger Divin of Rosharon and Janice Atkins of Manvel. In order for a student to qualify for one of the scholarships he or she must have completed 12 semester hours of college credit, have maintained a 2.5 grade point average, and must be a full-time student of A.C.C. The recipients are chosen by a college committee. The Czech Club has voted to increase the amount of the two scholarships to $400.00 each for the 1982-1983 school year with the stipulation that one of the scholarships is to go to a student enrolled in the Czech language course and the other to a studeLt-atlarge.

NEWSBRIEF Bro. Rudolph J. "Grandpa" Lostak, 98, of Alvin, died April 14 in Alvin. Services were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Earthman Funeral Home Chapel in Highlands, with Rev. Henry Beseda officiating.

Interment was in the SPJST Cemetery in Crosby. Bro. Lostak was a member of Lodge No. 91 Crosby for 74 years, and served as lodge secretary for 50 years, not missing a meeting, and he was a delegate to all the SPJST conventions from 1916 to 1956. He was the 44th person in the SPJST history to outlive the actuarial table of his life insurance certificate. Bro. Lostak was the father of Bro. Tommie Lostak, who serves on the Publication Committee.

A. L. (Alois) Boudny, 85, passed away in a Taylor hospital on Sunday, April 25th, after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held from Condra Funeral Chapel in Taylor, with SL President Nick A. Morris officiating on behalf of the SPJST in

the funeral chapel and at graveside, with burial in the Taylor City Cemetery. Bro. Boudny had been a member of SPJST Lodge No. 29 Praha near Taylor since 1933 and served for many years as secretary of that lodge.

REUNIONS

Shiller-Lesikar Reunion The 92nd Shiller-Lesikar Reunion was held Sunday, April 18 at the Fireman's Hall in New Ulm. Attending from Victoria were Mrs. Edith Fischer, Mr. & Mrs. Johnnie Lesikar, Ernest Spiegelhauer, Margaret Hnatek, Mrs. Olivia Shiller Otto, Mrs. Helen Hosek Mikula, Mr. & Mrs. B. D. Shiller and Mr. & Mrs. Alton L. Wokaty.

Approximately 75 guests attended. In addition to members of the Shiller-Lesikar family, there were descendants of Jan Siller "Martinku", Jan Silar "Borovy", Josef Jirasek, Josef Marcak and others from the families of the early Czech settlers in Austin County.

April 18 was Decoration Day at the New Ulm Cemetery and Henry Ripple placed a flower on the grave of each relative buried in the cemetery.

Henry W. Marcak, 91, of Kenedy was unable to attend the reunion, but was phoned by those attending.

Spry Joseph Charles Esterak of Smithville, who will be 99 in June, was the oldest person in attendance at the reunion. The youngest was Jamie Lee Leshikar of Austin, seven months. Mr. & Mrs. Marshall Forester of Jackson, Mississippi, traveled the greatest distance to attend.

Traditional Czech-American food was served at the covered dish luncheon, which was followed by a business meeting. Mrs. Willye Mae Oliphint of Houston chaired the meeting, assisted by Steve Shiller of Caldwell. Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Kroulik of Houston were thanked for their help in the kitchen.

A report was given about placing a memorial in the New Ulm Cemetery in honor of Jan Silar "Borovy" and his wife, Teresie Jirasek Silar. The couple's unmarked graves cannot be located.

Victoria decendants of the couple include the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren of Josef H. Shiller and his brother, Vincent J. Shiller.

Donations for the memorial from any of Jan Silar's descendants, may be sent to Mrs. Alton L. Wokaty, 2102 N. Jecker, Victoria, Texas 77901.

There was a beautiful arrangement of red amaryllis on one of the tables and this reporter is sorry to say that she did not find out who furnished them.

A tribute was paid to family members who have died since the reunion held in April 1981. The deceased family members include Clara Hejl Stalmach, James Walter Duewald, Olga Zanek Wienke, David G. Schroeder, Samuel John Shiner, George Walter Miller, Reuben Lesikar, Charles Joseph Lesikar and Anton Kalich, also Laddie Lesikar.

The next reunion will be held at

the same location, Fireman's Hall in New Ulm, in April of 1983. The exact date will be announced.

Seaton School Reunion The biannual reunion of the Seaton School, which had its beginning almost a century ago will be held Sunday, May 30, in the School Cafeteria.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with a basket lunch spread and served at noon. Plates, napkins, bread, drinks, and all other necessary items will be furnished.

The program after the noon meal will start at 1:30 p.m. with the following itinerary: 1) The oldest picture of the first school 2) The oldest picture of the second school 3) The oldest teacher present 4) The oldest student present 5) The youngest student present 6) The oldest trustee present 7) The class with the most members present 8) The funniest story happening in school 9) The best educational comments by students Prizes of two (2) dollars will be awarded to winners of each category. The Executive Committee of the reunion invites all of you to reminisce the basic education of the Three R's on May 30th.

INTRODUCTION The following is the first of three guidelines that will be in effect for this year's SPJST camps. These guidelines were drawn up the latter part of 1981 and the early part of 1982, with input from many people who actively work with our youth at camp.

It would be nice if we did not have to have a lot of these things in writing, but human nature being what it is, we feel it has become necessary to stipulate certain things in printed form.

These guidelines were distributed to all those present at the recent Youth Leaders' Retreat here at the Home Office. We have a supply of them here in the Home Office printed in booklet form, however, they are reprinted here for the information of all concerned. If it is your desire to be a chaperone or LIT at any of the camps this year, please read the following very carefully and if you feel that you can still fulfill the obligations under the terms and stipulations set forth, by all means volunteer your services. If you feel you cannot, it is better to know ahead of time the rules that you will be expected to abide by and then make your decision accordingly. We do not think they are too stringent or unreasonable. In years past, it would have been nice to have had these guidelines in writing; they might have avoided some difficulties and problems.

Save this issue for future reference, as well as the coming two issues which will deal with guidelines for campers and guidelines for staff.

(Although the staff is hired out of this office, it might be well for everyone involved to know what their duties are and what is expected of them.)

Fraternally, Nick A. Morris President and Head of the Youth Dept. *** GUIDELINES FOR CHAPERONES AND LITS AT SPJST CAMPS INTRODUCTION

We are glad that you have agreed to be either a chaperone or a LIT (Leader In Training). Both roles are identical in that they carry considerable responsibility. It is assumed that you like to be around children and young people or you would not have accepted the assignment.

The camping experience should be a happy and relaxing experience for everyone. Keep in, mind that it is not a variation or extension of school (the kids were dismissed from school at the end of May) and it should not be a rigid disciplinary type of atmosphere.

At the same time, there are certain limitations and rules of conduct and behavior that must be adhered to in order to have a well organized and orderly camp.

Discipline is as much ALLOWING a young person to do something as it is forbidding them to do something.

Discipline is not all "don't". If a chaperone or LIT has a "school master's" attitude in relating to young people, that will make for an unhappy relationship. DOING things WITH the youngsters is very important, rather than merely shepherding them around from place to place.

Youngsters love to see adults do things and they will eagerly emulate them. In a way, you are a substitute parent for the youngsters away from his or her home environment. Develop a cordial relationship with those who are in your charge, but let it also be one of mutual respect and for you as the authority figure You can be firm without being harsh or authoritarian.

If you don't feel good physically or you have had a "bad morning" or a "bad day", you should make every effort not to convey your attitude or feelings to the young people around you, even though it is often hard to put "on a front" of feeling good when you actually do not.

If you are a successful chaperone and LIT, the youngsters will develop an affection for you and they will long

8/VESTN K—Wednesday, May 5, 1982 remember the experience, even though it may last for only 2, 3, or 4 days.

The following guidelines are in effect for the duration of camp. They are based on actual SPJST experiences at camp over a period of many years.

1. To qualify as an LIT, a person must be 17 years of age by June 1st.

They may apply to their DYC for the LIT position earlier in the year, however, knowing that they will be 17

by June 1st. Staff persons must be at least 18 years of age at the time of camp. Age of campers is 6 through 15.

2. Do not interpose yourself between the members of the staff at camp and the youngsters in your charge. (Staff members are screened and hired by the SPJST Youth Dept.)

In other words, do not try to tell the staff member how he or she should do their job. They have been carefully selected, hired, and receive a small salary and are very aware of their responsibilities. The best attitude is one of cooperation. Do not make any special demands on staff members or request any special favors. Any complaints should be channeled through the DYC in charge.

3. Make every effort to stay with your group at all times and know where each of them is at all times, even through check out/departure time when cabins are inspected. If you ever have to be absent from your group, make arrangements for someone to take your place, if at all possible; if not, and you have to be absent for a longer period, make arrangements with the District Youth Counselor in charge of your camp to temporarily have your group join some other group with a chaperone or LIT. You should be especially watchful for any acts of vandalism;particularly during the final hours of your camp. Any damage will come out of your district's camp allocation.

4. No alcoholic beverages are permitted on the camp site at any time under any circumstances by anyone.

5. Do not leave camp except in the case of an emergency, such as personal illness or taking a camper to seek medical attention.

6. Be diligent about attending any meetings called by the DYC or other persons in authority.

7. If you have a particular position or job in your home town that requires a position of authority in supervising and telling other people what to do, you should make every effort to shed and leave the aura of that position behind and not try to demonstrate it at camp. The youngsters in your charge are not working for or under you; you are working in their best interests to see that they are properly supervised and that they get the maximum benefit out of their camping experience. Put another way, do not attempt to "throw your weight around" at camp according to the position that you hold in your daily lives. You need not try to impress the campers or the other adults present with what you do back home; the youngsters really don't care because they see you only as a person.

8. If you have an automobile, you will be permitted to drive it onto the camp premises, park it and not drive it during your stay at camp, except to leave in the case of dire necessity or emergency. The principal mode of getting around at camp is your feet.

Cars will not be used to transport persons from one location to another,

except Ito the canoeing site and to cookouts because of the time and distance involved, and then ohly by an adult or DYC. Pickups may be used to haul heavy equipment or loads, however.

When driving onto and from the camp premises, the speed limit is 15 mph and will be strictly observed.

Anyone driving in excess of this limit is endangering the lives of others and will be asked to leave. We cannot afford to give you a second chance.

9. Chaperones are expected to arrive at the start of camp, stay with the group entrusted to their charge, and not leave camp until the conclusion of camp, unless personal extenuating circumstances dictate otherwise, in which case a substitute or replacement for you will have to be found - not a simple or easy thing in the middle of camp. Plan to stay from the beginning to the end.

10. Make every effort to have your group present at the activities scheduled for them and see that they participate to the fullest extent possible. If a youngster demonstrates shyness or embarrassment, help him by providing an example and by doing the activity yourself.

11. Young people, particularly subteens and teens, are following a very natural behavioral pattern when they sometimes demonstrate an attraction to members of the opposite sex. This is no cause for panic or alarm and usually the less said about it the better. Ignore it. Calling attention to such behavior by being critical or condemning it usually encourages them to continue with such displays.

They may even feel they're being challenged and might be tempted to "go even further" just to "prove" themselves. Of course, a person has to be a pretty good psychologist to judge when things might be "going too far".

A study of human nature and of young people that age will tell you that when either of the two sexes make open overtures to the other, the natural thing is to respond in like manner. It does not mean that they are falling in love at first sight or right there on the spot. Usually the remark by a chaperone or LIT (with a firm but polite voice) to the effect that "OK, you two lovers, let's get on with what we came here for. Let's get on with swimming, playing ball, riding horses," or whatever. In any case, don't make a major problem out of what is usually nothing more than a casual display of attention and attraction. However, if the young people involved persist and things appear to be getting out of hand, both need to be called aside and counselled by someone in authority. Remember, so much of what young people do is natural and there is nothing unnatural about young people being attracted to one another, no more than it is adults being attracted to one another.

may well be the very first time the youngster has been away from his mother and father and home. In this regard, it is never- wise to yield to the emotional displays of the youngster and summon his parent or parents to come visit him at camp.

That is the least advisable thing to do. Instead, you should not waste any time and personally take or encourage the youngster to participate in some activity with the other children. If such a youngster has time to dwell on his homesickness, it will get worse, not better. The rule of thumb is "keep them busy and keep them involved in something."

They usually get over their homesickness soon.

13. Long distance phone calls from camp phones should be made only under extenuating circumstances, and then only on a collect basis.

14. For any other contingencies that may arise, consult with the DYC in charge. If he or she needs to, they will consult with the State Youth Director, who is usually available in an advisory capacity. If she needs to, she can seek the advice and a final decision from the president of the Supreme Lodge who is the head of the Youth Department, according to our by-laws, and who has "direct control over all youth activities". (Art. 37(k) of the bylaws).

15. Other rules concerning camp administration are covered under "Camp" and "Rules At Camp" in the current SPJST Youth Rule Book.

Those rules deal primarily with camp eligibility, camp site selection, and miscellaneous.

In summary, camp is a joint effort and has to have the cooperation of all concerned — campers, staff, chaperones and LITs, DYCs, State Youth Director and the President of the Supreme Lodge. Most of the rules are set forth in the rule book pertaining to camp, however, these few points are intended to supplement those rules. Guidelines and rules work only if people make and allow them to work. Of course, it's hot in Texas in August, but then if we held camp in our air conditioned homes and offices, there would be no need for camp in the first place.

Remember, our camps are funded by the SPJST. The money is authorized by our conventions and disbursed through the Supreme Lodge.

The entry cards must be in by May 24, so be sure and send them on time; it takes some time to get all the program items compiled and I have other things to do besides.

From the Youth Leaders CENTERVILLE LODGE NO. 188 YC NEWS The Centerville Lodge No. 188 Youth Club held a meeting Friday, April 9, at 3 p.m., at the home of Youth Leader Kim Lacey. It was raining so there weren't many youth present at the meeting.

Our first activity was to finish our Easter baskets we were making for the nursing home. There were some really creative ones and I'm really proud of the members who participated. We then decorated Easter eggs to put in our baskets.

Refreshments were served and the meeting was adjourned. We took the Easter baskets filled with eggs to the nursing home and passed them out among the patients; some of them were so pleased to get them!

Czechoslovakia is almost as large as New York, but has almost three million less people.

Czechoslovakia is a land-locked country surrounded completely by other countries, and always depending on other countries for protection. The land that is now Czechoslovakia belonged to AustriaHungary before World War I. Czechoslovakia was a free republic in the period between the world wars. This

There is iron ore in Northern Moravia. Czechoslovakia also has deposits of graphite, manganese, lead, zinc, mercury, silver and gold. Uranium, clay and sand, which is used for making glass, are other mineral resources. Mineral springs with world-famous health resorts can be found in Western Bohemia.

One of Czechoslovakia's most important resources is its soil. Almost half the land can be farmed. One out of every three acres is covered by forests.

Czechoslovakia has large resources of water power, electric plants have been built by the government, on many rivers. The dams provide water for farming as well as electric power.

AGRICULTURE About 38 out of every 100 people in Czechoslovakia are working in agriculture of forestry. Under the government, a farmer can own only a small amount of land. Communists have setup many large collective farms.

Barley, wheat, rye, oats, potatoes, and sugar beets are principle food crops.

They also have dairy farms.

MANUFACTURING One out of every three people work in a manufacturing industry. In these factories heavy machinery, shoes, gloves, and textiles are their leading products. Two factories in Czechoslovakia are world famous. They are Linin, the factory in Plzen. It produces munitions, automobiles, trucks and tanks. The other is Bata Shoe Factory at Gottwaldov.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club attended the District VI meeting in Sweet Home Sunday, April 16. Eight youth members and eight adults attended.

We put on a program and had a booth to raise money for our youth club. For the program we had Stephanie Roye doing a tap dance, Rudy Laitkep playing his xylophone, and Karen Kahanek, Michelle Srubar, Kelli Korenek and Vicki, Jean and Mary Dorotik doing a skit and then they all sang "I'm looking Over A Four-Leaf Clover" and "SPJST" songs.

After the meeting we had lunch which was prepared by the ladies of Sweet Home. I also want to thank Sweet Home for hosting the District VI meeting.

Rudolph J. Lostak Services for Rudolph Joseph "Grandpa" Lostak, 98, of Alvin, Texas, were held at 10 a.m. April 16, 1982 at Earthman Funeral Home in Highlands with the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Burial followed at the SPJST Cemetery in Crosby under the direction of Earthman Funeral Home.

Brother Lostak died Wednesday, April 14 in the home of his granddaughter and grandson-in-law.

Born 14 October 1883 in Krumsin, Czechoslovakia, he came to Texas in 1905. November 9, 1907, he was married to Mary Ann Skrabanek, who preceded him in death 1 October 1976. He lived, most of his married life, in the Crosby area except for a short time in Liberty County and Alvin since 1975.

He retired from farming in 1943 and worked as a home builder until 1958. He also worked as a surveying engineer for the U.S. Government in the 1930s and 1940s and served on the Crosby School Board for 18 years.

Brother Lostak also was secretary of the SPJST Lodge No. 91 for 50 years never missing a meeting. He served as a delegate to all the SPJST Conventions from 1916 to 1956. (All of his living 4 generations are members of the SPJST.) When Brother Lostak attained the grand age of 96 on 14 October 1979, be became the 44th person in

the history of the SPJST Society to outlive the actuarial table on his life insurance certificate. Tenth Supreme Judicial District Banquet Set The annual banquet for the Tenth Supreme Judicial District of Texas will be held Friday, May 7, 1982, at the Ridgewood Country Club in Waco, Texas, according to an announcement made by Jim Barlow, Chairman of the Banquet Committee. Barlow is Judge of the County Court at Law II in Waco.

Sherwin Winniford, President of the Waco-McLennan County Bar Association, has issued an invitation to all lawyers, judges and their spouses in the Tenth Supreme Judicial District in addition to all lawyers and judges and spouses in Bell and Milam Counties.

The Tenth Supreme Judicial District is composed of Bosque, Coryell, Ellis, Falls, Freestone, Hamilton, Hill, Johnson, Leon, Limestone, McLennan, Madison, Navarro, Robertson and Somervell Counties.

The Marvelous Nose Subject To Allergies The normal healthy nose is a marvel of nature. Within its passages, inhaled air is filtered, warmed, and humidified before passing into the lungs. But if exposure to certain substances brings on symptoms that make you wonder if the warranty has run out on your marvel of nature, you may have an allergy.

The nose and sinuses normally produce large quantities of mucous daily to keep nasal passages moist, but an increase in these secretions can occur when a person with an allergy swallows or inhales a substance to which the person is sensitive (an allergen).

An increase in secretions can produce a number of unpleasant effects, which is often called "hay fever", said Dr. Clift Price, Associate Commissioner for Personal Health Services, Texas Department of Health: 1) Sinuses, which are breathing chambers behind the face, can become blocked with mucous, and if pressure continues unrelieved a headache may result.

2) An infection in the sinuses may occur if an obstruction continues over a long period of time. An obstruction may occur from swelling of nasal tissue due to allergic reactions or from an anatomical disorder.

3) The draining of excessive nasal secretions can also produce a problem. A "drippy" nose and perhaps a sore throat can result as mucous drains from the nasal passages and down the back of the throat. Decongestants directly shrink blood vessels in the nose, reducing swelling and mucous production. Antihistamines neutralize the substance your body produces when exposed to an allergen (histamines).

Histamines cause the body to increase produdtitilt of nasal secretions and cause swelling of nasal passages.

Although antihistamines are widely used, they may have a sedative effect which could lessen the alertness and effectiveness of motor vehicle or machinery operators. Over-use could lead to a type of dependence or extreme drowsiness.

If An infection is involved, antibiotics may be needed to bring it under control.

Allergy shots work by prompting temporary immunity to certain allergens.

"Nasal sprays and nose drops may bring temporary relief," he said, "but use them only as directed and for not more than two or three days. You can easily become dependent on them, and there is also danger of rebound swelling in which they actually increase nasal irritation."

The more effective remedy for "hay fever" is to reduce the number of allergens in an allergysufferer's immediate surroundings. Areas where molds (a common allergen) grow should be treated with mold killing cleansers and painted with mold resistant paint. Mold destroying agents can be sprayed into the bottoms of air conditioners and under refrigerators, suggests Dr. Price.

Frequent dusting with mops and rags treated to collect dust will aid in removing another common allergen. A specialized diet will be needed to remove food allergens.

Everyone is acquainted with the drippy or stoppedup nose, itchy watery eyes, headache, sore throat, and hacking cough that may be associated with an allergy.

Age and illness seem to go together, but many health problems of the aging can be delayed or eliminated through proper nutrition.

Diet is important to people of all ages, says Mrs. Barbara Taylor, R.D., special project director in nutrition in the Bureau of Personal Health Services of the Texas Department of Health (TDH).

The human body, regardless of age, needs proper amounts of nutrients (vitamins, minerals, protein, fat and carbohydrates) in order to function properly, says Mrs. Taylor.

While most people gain weight as they grow older, the need for proper nutrition continues. The weight problem can be alleviated by curtailing unneeded calories.

Elderly should concentrate on cutting down on sweets, salty snack foods, highcalorie drinks and alcohol.

An exercise program — even if it is only brisk walks — will keep the muscles toned up and help burn up excess calories.

While eating too much can be harmful, eating too little can also cause big problems. The so-called "eating like a bird" can leave a person with less energy and confine their activities, which may lead to loneliness and depression.

In addition, a diet containing too few calories also is likely to be lacking in a variety of foods and other nutrients, said Mrs. Taylor.

The National Institute of Aging advises older people to talk with their doctors about their eating habits, especially if they have illnesses that might require changes in what or how much they eat. This is important because some drugs can interact with certain foods and change the effects of the medication, while other drugs can alter nutritional needs.

Eating a well-balanced diet can provide adequate vitamins, minerals, protein and carbohydrates, said Mrs. Taylor. Such a diet is rich in fresh veget0Aes (especially leafy greens), fresh fruits, dairy products (which may be a low-fat variety), beans, and/or meat, and whole grains. Liquid is important for daily regularity, and at least two quarts a day are recommended.

Mrs. Taylor sale' a person's daily intake of food should come from the basic food groups: milk, meat, veg-

etables, fruits and grain products such as bread or cereals. Eating these foods will help reduce the amount of fat and salt in the diet. Too much fat and salt may contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke.

This high quality type of diet will provide an individual with the trace elements — found in different foods- which are essential to good health. "Trace elements are so minute that a wide variety of foods in a well-balanced diet can supply all of them," said Mrs. Taylor.

She said that many older people don't get enough calcium, a mineral that is used by the body in many ways.

Calcium, present in many foods, is especially important for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. If the diet includes milk and cheese and dark, leafy greens, the necessary calcium will be provided in quantities necessary to satisfy the body's needs.

The body needs protein to build, maintain and repair muscle tissue, which has a primary source in red meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cooked dry beans, peanut butter and nuts, as well as in dairy products.

While energy is obtained from fats and carbohydrates, it is important to eat such foods that also include vitamins, minerals or protein. Consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grain or enriched flour products, beans, rice and rolled oats can supply fats and carbohydrates. Candy and sweet desserts should be limited, since they provide excess calories.

Whole grain foods are recommended and include whole wheat breads and cereals, oatmeal, whole wheat or rye crackers, barley, brown rice and cornmeal.

If you feel hungry between meals, Mrs. Taylor recommends snacks of fresh vegetables and fruits, which are high in vitamins and low in calories, fats, sugar and salt.

Fresh foods and whole grain help provide the body with fiber. While the role of fiber in a diet is not fully known, it can help in avoiding constipation, a problem to many elderly.

The elderly population is growing rapidly in Texas, leading to more concern about the health of our senior citizens. Some 1.3 million people in Texas are over age 65 now, and by 1990 this aging population is expected to reach 1.6 million. By year 2000, the 65-and-over population in Texas will reach almost 1.9 million, says the US Census Bureau.

A nationwide aging trend also is being experienced.

With such a shift to the older generation, scientists supported by the National Institute on Aging are studying nutrient intake and requirements in the elderly, changes in taste and smell with aging, behavioral aspects of dietary habits, and the influence of nutrition and health in old age. Research will give the medical community and nutritionists a better understanding of the role of the diet in the aging process.
