He was confined in ICU for several days, but is reported to be improving. SUPREME LODGE

Supreme Lodge Meeting and Referendum Dear Members/Delegates: Among the many important Society business matters that came before the recent Supreme Lodge meeting was the matter of a referendum to the delegates for their action on two matters: 1) Adjust the mileage reimbursement to all those traveling on official Society business, and 2) Inaugurating a new insurance program (annuity insurance) for our Society.

A copy of the referendum being mailed to all the delegates to the last convention appears below. It behooves the general membership to study these two amendments and let the delegates from your respective lodges know your sentiments.

The delegates will note that in order for their ballots to be counted they must arrive here at the Supreme Lodge NO LATER THAN JULY 1st, 1982. Don't forget to sign your ballot and mark BOTH boxes.

Pursuant to Article 7(a) of our bylaws and which deals with a referendum between conventions and which stipulates—that "Such action will be accompanied by an adequate explanation", we would like to elaborate just a little bit on the items that we are seeking the delegates' votes on.

1. In the last convention in 1980, the Finance Committee recommended, and the convention delegates approved, the amount of 35C a mile for delegates traveling to and from the convention. The convention also approved the payment of 300 a mile for all those traveling on official Society business, effective July 1, 1980, with the proViso that that amount ". . . be increased each January 1st for the next four years with the United States Cost of Living Index as prepared by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for private transportation based upon November 1st Cost of Living Index for the next preceding 12 months, effective each January 1st." (See pp.

14 and 92 of the Convention Proceedings).

Pursuant to the above, the Supreme Lodge increased the mileage reimbursement to 340 in January 1981 and to 380 in January 1982. This means that everyone traveling on Society business is paid 380 a mile. Projecting this trend, we might well be paying 45t a mile by the time of the next convention in 1984. There's no level of government or any business in the whole United States that reimburses mileage at anywhere near this amount. The (7- IRS allows 200 a mile for the first 15,000 miles-and 110 a mile in excess of that.

Reimbursement at 350 a mile to the delegates to the last convention amounted to $40,500. Projecting the contemplated increases and the

increase in delegates, transportation costs alone to the next convention could amount to approximately $70,000 and the total cost of the net convention, including these transportation costs, could well be in the neighborhood of $275,000 to $300,000.

We have to have conventions and the delegates and all of us have to get there. There have to be preconvention committee meetings.

Conventions have always been, and will continue to be, costly — that we know and expect. Remember, however, that there will be recommendations for other expenditures for the following four years — premium refunds to members, refunds to lodges, various contributions and allocations, youth activities, salaries, administrative/ operation costs, certificate rate structure, and many others. A pie can have only so many slices or pieces and the size of each piece will be either smaller or larger, depending on how you cut it. A check was made with three other Texas fraternals and the mileage currently being paid is considerably less than what we are paying.

In their January 1982 meeting, the Supreme Lodge discussed, .at length, the adjustment stipulated in the last convention in January of each year and reluctantly, based on the provision stated above, increased it by another 40 to 380.

Considering all of this information and data, the SPJST Finance Committee, in their meeting on April 10, 1982, recommended, and the.

Supreme Lodge subsequently approved, sending out a referendum seeking approval that the current reimbursement be decreased and set at 350 a mile until the next convention for all those traveling on official Society business. This should then serve as a reasonable basis for mileage reimbursement at the next convention.

2. Vice President Gebala has this further explanation on the second item in the referendum: A special meeting of the Insurance Committee was held on Saturday, April 10, 1982, the minutes of which appear below.

In order to give the delegates of the XXIIIrd Convention a broader view of the data used by the Insurance Committee in making their recommendation to the Supreme Lodge and the Supreme ,Lodge subsequently calling for a referendum vote, the following is submitted: Rudd & Wisdom, our Consulting Actuarial firm, believes that a joint decreasing term certificate and annuities are a very timely and desireable addition to the SPJST Product Portfolio in that each fulfills a need found among a large number of our membership.

The joint decreasing term product does not create any by-law adjustments, however, the annuity program does.

Caution must be used in the administration of annuities in that the profit margin on annuities' is normally low and, therefore, commissions paid and administrative costs must be kept to a minimum. We presently pay 8% to the lodges for collection of premiums. This cannot be done in the case of annuities only. The handling of annuities, billing and collection, etc. must be on a direct basis for a number of reasons:

Any rebate to the local lodges from the annuity program would not be feasible at this time.

Ben Jarma, Chairman Helen Hegwood, Secretary *** REFERENDUM Dear Delegates: Article 7(a) of the By-laws provides in part that important changes between conventions may be made by delegates to the 1980 Convention.

1. The Supreme Lodge recommends that you vote to lower the mileage reimbursement to all those traveling on official Society business to 35C per mile until the next convention.

The Finance Committee has recommended this change.

The reason for the, change is that the Supreme Lodge and the Finance Committee feel that the existing mileage reimbursement is too high.

2. Additionally, the Supreme Lodge recommends that you vote to amend Article 33(b)1, Article 51(a), and Article 91(b).

The Insurance Committee elected at the last convention recommends that these amendments be made.

The reasons for the amendments are to permit the Supreme Lodge to offer a new insurance program if the Supreme Lodge decides the new insurance program is in the best interest of its members and the Society. The new program would be to offer ANNUITY INSURANCE. If the amendments are adopted, and the Supreme Lodge offers ANNUITIES, there would be direct payments to the Supreme Lodge and detailed record-keeping would be handled by the Supreme Lodge. Since the ballot will be kept by the Supreme Lodge Secretary unopened until the next regular or called meeting of the Supreme Lodge, it is important that you enclose ONLY the ballot in the ballot envelope.

Topics Discussed at Lodge No. 15, Buckholts Important

Your reporter was late for the meeting but all officers were present and discussion on the lowering of the ceiling was taking place when I came in. It was decided to let a contractor from Salado give a price on the job; also discussion on the disposition of the old circulating fans was discussed. It was decided to try to sell them.

Another Work Day was planned for Saturday, the 17th.

Joe Zajicek made a motion, seconded by Cecilia to purchase one more air-conditioner to balance the air distribution. The motion carried.

At this time Pat Hillman (also late) gave her treasurer's report for February and March. It was accepted as read.

The Standing Committee reports were all accepted as read after a motion by Warren Hillman, seconded by Ken Janicek.

Discussion was then held on the renting of the hall to a political candidate for a reception. It was agreed to rent the hall to the candidate for $45 and if cleaned to the approval of the entertainment chairman, only $15 or $7.50 per hour after a 2-hour minimum.

A report was given on the Youth Club. The Youth Club sponsored an Easter egg hunt for the children.

Everyone present received a cute little crocheted bunny made by Sister Elsie Mascheck.

Reports were given by Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka.

Following other business, refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned.

Lunch was served and enjoyed.

Mrs. Frank Zabransky received the April birthday cake, being the only one present with an April birthday.

Celebration In Store For Cyclone Lodge No. 24 Double

Dear Members: Our meeting was called to order

by President Dan Sebek.

The flag was presented by Diane Dorner and Janet Macek who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We then remained standing in moments of silence for our deceased members.

On the sick list we have Dan Hoelscher who had surgery; to him and all members who may be ill, a speedy recovery.

For old business we got a report from chairman of the 50-year event, Sister Louise Zavodny that the committee is making plans for the "doing." It was brought to our attention that our lodge is a charter lodge and will be 85 years old this year and that we could include this in our celebration. After some discussion, it was left to the committee and the Board to finalize the plans.

New members accepted were: Carl Macek and Barbara Macek, signed up by Sales Representative Eugene Haisler and Shane Lesikar and Oleta Wilde, signed up by Sales Representative Louise Zavodny. We welcome them to our membership!

Youth Leader Carol Chervenka gave us an interesting report. She then thanked the ladies for the sweets that were brought and all who helped which made the barbecue a success. A special thanks to Sister Louise and Brother Jerry Zavodny for giving them all the food at cost and the use of their cooler; also the youth wish to thank Brother Jerry Zavodny for donating a TV for their social this month. There will be a Family Social at the lodge open to all the members. You need to bring your games and sweets to go along with the food the youth will prepare; this will be Friday, April 30. They are also planning on going to Six Flags this summer so they will finalize the plans at this social.

No. 28, East Bernard Sets May Monthly Meeting

Dear Members: The May lodge meeting will be held, on the 2nd, in our hall, at 2:30 p.m. CDT. It behooves every member to note the time change.

The agenda will cover all of the standard reports, any special reports, a report on the District VI meeting and any other business needing attention. A special door prize will be given to honor Mother's Day. The "Clan" will gather after the meeting.

All of the reports were accepted as given, in the April meeting, on the 4th. There was no further business; the meeting adjourned to the coffee pot, after the drawings. The regular door prize was won by Sister Frances Haverda. There were four special prizes given to commemorate Easter. These were four "Legg" eggs especially decorated like Easter Eggs, for the occasion by Sister Nezval. The small prizes within were donated by Sisters Luquette and Nezval. The prizes were won, in order, by Sisters Elsie Brdecka and Annie Foytik, (women) and Brothers Albert Lupik and R.J. Schank, (men), respectively.

The social, after the meeting, was attended by all present but one, who had to leave. The lodge furnished the liquid refreshments and some of the sandwiches. Sisters Haverda, Schank, Kortis, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval furnished the rest to fill the table. Sister Schank brought one item that needs special attention: that being fresh picked, chilled strawberries in sugar.

Another special mention: Sister Kortis had hurt her back prior to the meeting and could not attend but sent her contribution in by Sister Sperlik. Sister Sperlik came up with the item needed always to operate socials, money. Thanks again to all of the sisters. All those present again did things the Fraternal way by staying to clean up so everyone could leave early. Thanks to all ...

Treasurer Eddie Ray Banik gave his report.

Youth Leader Rosemarie Banik gave her report. There were only 12 Youth Club members present. There will be a cake walk May 1st.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Rudolph Vicha, Fred Mach and Vernon Wood, Jr. Chairperson reports: Kitchen by Peggy Dieterich, Entertainment— Gloria Pavelka in absence of Gene Pavelka who had to work, Refreshments — Johnny Stuchly.

New members accepted were: Codie Wayne McCauley, Marilyn Sykora, Amanda Magee. JT policies were converted into adults for Kelly Hargraves and Jerome Nechar.

Tammie Hand broke her leg a few weeks ago. Now, she broke her thumb. Tammie be careful and don't break anything else.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, May 2 at 2:30 p.m. I hope to see more of you there.

Lodge Has New Financial Secretary

Dear Vestnik Readers, The monthly meeting of the Hillje SPJST Lodge No. 40 was held April 13, 1982 at 7 p.m. in the Hillje Hall.

President Jerry Polasek called the meeting to order and welcomed all members who were attending.

Secretary Albert Kresta, Sr. read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved as read.

Frank Sablatura, treasurer, has consented to assume the position of financial secretary, formerly held by Pete Sablatura who passed away March 25, 1982.

A report was given on paid-up policies and policies that will expire soon. The financial situation was reviewed. Four new policies have been added to our books.

A thank-you note from the Pete Sablatura family was read.

There was a discussion about the future purchase of a new adding machine, which is much needed and signature changes to be made on checks and other accounts.

At the close of the meeting the members were entertained by the Youth Club members who presented a puppet show and skit that will be presented at Sweet Home for the District VI meeting.

A variety of delicious refreshments were furnished and served by both youth and adult members.

Progressive Reports Heard At Lodge No. 66 Meeting Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 66, Waco, held their meeting Sunday, April 18; President Daniel Nors conducted the meeting.

The flags were presented by James Yates and Chris Owens. The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto.

In roll call all officers were present.

There were no visitors, but it was great to have Sister Matilda Hanus attend the meeting again.

The March minutes were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt. They were approved as read.

In correspondence, a thank-you card was read from Danny and Jennifer Nors for all the prayers, calls, and cards during the illness of their son, Aaron; also for the donation by Lodge No. 66. (It was so nice to see the family at the meeting.

We all hope Aaron continues to improve); a letter was also read from Time Magazine.

Brother Johnnie Gaidusek had Sister Engelke read the minutes of their Wednesday night, April 7 meeting. Brother Gaidusek also thanked everyone for the cards, flowers, calls and prayers for him while he was in Hillsboro Hospital.

Entertainment Committee Chairman George Shilling gave a report... He made it very brief.

Following the meeting and Easter hunt, cold cuts, chips, desserts and beverages would be served. The food was delicious. Thanks to the ladies for those tasty desserts.

Brother Gaidusek, Linden Hall treasurer, and Brother Frank Miller, Linden Hall secretary, gave their quarterly reports. These were very good reports.

Sister Barbara Brem reported on the youth activities. The club plans to have a Mother's Day program at the May meeting. The youth had a contest on decorating Easter cards and eggs. Decorated cards in the Junior division were selected in the following order: lst-Michele Shelton, 2nd-Doug Nors, 3rd-Greg Nors.

Everyone was so happy to see Ed Kadlecek Wednesday at. the Birthday Club Sisters' Party. Ed even played cards for two hours until noon and after lunch he was ready to go home and rest. Ed you look good and you made us happy by coming out to be with us. Keep it up!

Jerry Kolacny, after 13 days in the hospital, is recuperating at home under the care of his wife, Bessie. He is doing fine after his ear operation, his hearing improved; get-well. I know all the fish. wonder why you and Bessie are not throwing trotlines.

We are glad to hear Harry Finn is doing so well and was released from St. Joseph's Hospital where he was confined over a week with a heart ailment. His wife, Lillian, and Harry are back at their Bay Home where they love it the best. At the last lodge meeting we missed you both.

My sister-in-law, Janie Dvorak, was taken to Polly Ryan Hospital last week where she is now; she improved some but still has to stay before she will be able to go back to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville, Texas. Janie fell some way and cut her forehead and some stitches had to be taken; she was unconscious and then she developed pneumonia; I was told today, by her two daughters, Helen Champion and Irene Graham, that their mother is out of danger and hope she will improve. Janie, we wish you a speedy recovery.

Congregating in the Blue Room Saturday night, as usual, Herman and Lucile Reed were enjoying refreshments in the company of Ed and Polly Klesel and later joined by Bob and Margaret Allbritton just back from their 7-day cruise which they enjoyed tremendously. (I hope to hear about it.) Usually, Alex and Wilhelmina Mendosa join the group.

(I didn't stay to find out.) At another table the TWINS: Irene Slovacek and Irma O'Conner with granddaughter Kathy, and later joined by Tim and Rosalee Kostom, came to wet their lips before joining their friends in the Chandelier Ballroom for the dance. 9th Meeting For Lodge No. 154, Ft. Worth May

Dear Member and Friends: A reminder of the Sokol Ft. Worth Unit Exhibition Sunday, May 2 at 2 p.m. The gymnastic meet will be Saturday, and the trophies to the winners will be given Sunday after the program, so all you grandparents, relatives and friends come and see the progress your children have made.

I'm sorry I didn't have the dates in my last article on Sister Henrietta Milan's article Gallery showing she was having this weekend, along with four other artists. Anyone who would like to go through the gallery call 237--4237 for an appointment and she would be happy to show you through the gallery.

We had several members who were on TV this week. Brother Emil Milan who has coached his L.D. Bell High School Gymnasts to first place for the 12th time in a state meet.

Congratulations, Emil! Also Sister Donna Parker who led the mayor and other dignitaries Friday for the Dedication of Main Street in connection with the 100th Chamber of Commerce Anniversary. Donna is chairman of the Board.

Brother Don and Sister Rose Steinman and Sister Frances Mamula of South Bend, Indiana were in the audience of Phil Donahue's Show this morning. They attended the show last Tuesday while in Chicago. On their 2-week trip up north, they were in a lot of snow and flooding rains, but Brother Don said he made it fine. In spite of the weather, they had a wonderful time.

We were all saddened by the sudden passing of Sister Mary Laznovsky of Lodge No. 135, Ennis.

She will be missed. May she rest in peace and our heartfelt sympathy to all of the family.

Benny and I enjoyed a nice visit today with four of his sisters: Hattie Havran of Cortez, Colorado, Elsie Densmore, Justine Valek, her spouse, George of Dallas, Texas and Lydia Sykora of Megargel. Hattie will be flying back home tomorrow after a 6-week visit in Texas.

Lodge Accepts Many New Members Academy

The April meeting of the SPJST Lodge No. 177, Academy, was called to order by President Rae Lisenbe.

All in attendance stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers responded to roll call.

Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe read the minutes of the previous meeting.

They were approved as read.

We received correspondence from the Little River Division of the Chapter of the March of Dimes.

All committee chairmen gave their reports for the past month.

Get-well cards were sent to Edward Bartek, Leo Brown and Robert Aguilar. Reported on the sick list were Robert Aguilar and James Cox was reported to be ill at the night of the meeting We wish both of you a speedy recovery.

Visitors attending our meeting were Richard and Mary Frances Wahlberg. We welcome you to come again.

Lodge Plans Monthly Meeting

Our April meeting was held Wednesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at 407 Ling, Bayou Vista.

Those present were Alvin Sefcik, John J. Valusek, Bessie Findley, Josephine Hitchcock, Jerry Jaroszewski, Clarence Fee, Henrietta Fee, Agnes Valusek and Evelyn Sefcik.

It would be nice if more members would attend our meetings. We are having a problem in keeping up with correct addresses of members, so when it's time to mail their refund checks, there are many which we cannot locate. It would be of great helpt to the lodge, if a correct address would be sent in whenever a member moves or marries and thus changes the name and address.

Our next meeting will be held Wednesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. at 407 Ling, Bayou Vista. Brothers and sisters let me see you there!

Our monthly meeting, held April 13, was called to order by our Financial Secretary Mydel Grochoske in the absence of our President Dennis

Barabas who was ill; also absent was Vice President Jess Taylor.

Jerry Janek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We stood in a minute of silence for our departed members.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read by Secretary Frances Simmank.

It was reported that the malfunctioning air-conditioners had been repaired.

There was a discussion on the need for more tables. Floor Chairman Joe Hurtik said he would study this and purchase the necessary tables.

It was mentioned that there may be a need to raise the hall rental fee, but not to members. A ten percent discount was voted in to schools for their non-profit activities.

All members are urged to attend the next meeting May 11 at 7:30 p.m. at which time a discussion will be held on the purchase of the water well from which the lodge gets its water. All need to inform themselves of the pros and cons of this. Future generations will have to live with the outcome of the vote of a handful of members if you do not come and express your opinion and vote.

New members accepted in March were Edith Cunningham, Jerry Don English and Douglas Paul Looney.

New members accepted in April were Jean Marie Dupew, Janet Lynn Kucera, Mark Alan Kucera and Nicholas Ryan Kucera and Anna Raye Bartek. We welcome these brothers and sisters into our lodge!

We are happy to report that Deta Butler is feeling much better, also that Carrie Lynn Williams is out of the hospital to which she had been admitted after a motorcycle accident at her home. She is the daughter of our kitchen co-chairmen Chuck and Brenda Beauchamp.

The Entertainment Committee wants to remind everyone that the May 8 dance with Jerry Haisler will be something special. All ladies are encouraged to wear dresses and men dress slacks and shirt. Ladies, if you have a long formal tucked away in your closet, dust it off and wear it and look and feel elegant. You will dance to a most versatile band. It belts out polkas, waltzes as well as rock and super country-western.

You are guaranteed to have a superduper good time. Bring your whole family and their friends and their friends' friends.

Brother Jerry Janek wants everyone to know that Sugar had her kid — and a cute one too. Sugar is a goat.

Lodge No. 183 Makes Charity Donations Mid-Cities

Dear Members: Our April dance was held Saturday, the 17th; there was a small crowd attending and a good time was had by all who were there.

We're glad to have our Secretary Pat Sill with us again, after her surgery. I heard that Diane Kuyawa is back in the hospital, again; our prayers go for her and hope she gets better soon.

If any of you members are sick or know of any member who is sick, please call our Sick Committee member Inez Greenlees at (817) 2628811; this is the only way that we know if there is anyone sick and, in this way, all of the members in the lodge will be able to know and maybe visit you or send you a card.

All of you members mark your calendars for May because there will be two good polka bands here. First one, Saturday, May 8: a new band MORAVIAN MEMORY MAKERS; they will play from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. I understand they are a very good band. Saturday, May 29, there will be a special dance at the lodge; Jim Bochnicek from Nebraska will be coming to Texas and play for us from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There will be a cover charge of $5, so all of you polka fans bring all of your neighbors, friends and relatives and let's have a ball because you may never have another chance to hear this band. BYOB and set-ups and beer will be available at the bar.

Remember, Lodge Day will be the third Sunday instead of the second Sunday because of Mother's Day; don't forget!

The lodge, so far this month, has sent $1,200 to the Star House, $200 worth of canned goods to Arlington Charity, and $200 worth of canned goods to St. Vincent De Pauls for needy people.

Well, there are some lodges in Texas doing things for charity while some lodges are watching other lodges do things and there are a few lodges wondering what's going on at Lodge No. 183; if you are one of the latter ones, come on out to one of our socials and see for yourselves. We may be one of the smallest lodges in the state but we are challenging all other lodges to keep up with the example that No. 183 is setting.

You members can feel proud of yourselves and start telling all of your friends and neighbors what you are doing and get them involved in SPJST and join the best little lodge in Texas!

The members present at the meeting Sunday voted. to pay off four more of the bonds this month; that's great, just goes to show you what a group of hard-working members can do.

Just like Phill keeps telling the members: "If you don't smile you can't win!"

Dear Members: Our monthly meeting was called to order by President Joe Ondrusek, followed by the recitation of the Pledge to our Flag.

Minutes were read from our last meeting and approved.

Entertainment Chairman Ron Coker gave his monthly report, also

thanked his wife, Sister Linda for doing this job during his absence at the last meeting.

Sister Dorothy Prasifka reported get-well cards were sent to Brother Silas Smith and Sister Mary Schroeder. Sympathy cards were sent to the family of Brother Joe Prasifka and Brother Charles Prasifka. Our sympathy to the family of Sister Mary Laznovsky. Congratulations cards were sent to Russell and Sharon Slicker, parents of a new baby, and Lewis and Elsie Mandak, grandparents.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the Easter Party held at the lodge Saturday afternoon was a success despite the morning rain. The District III Youth Leaders' seminar held at our lodge was also a success, with 21 leaders, 6 of them from Lodge No. 84 attended; she expressed her thanks for the use of the hall, also the Youth Leaders' Retreat in Temple was attended by Assistant Youth Leaders Timpy Ondrusek and Pat Pokladnik for Saturday and Sunday, and Youth Leader Bessie Petr and Assistant Youth Leader Carlyn Ondrusek attended Sunday. Each found the retreat educational and interesting. No date has been set for the Field Day to be held in May. Preparations for YAD to be held at our lodge is in full swing, also the Ennis Polka Festival has invited the youth to participate in the parade to be held, as well as dance.

House Committee Brother Adolph Salac reported that the huge log on the lodge parkway was cut up by him, Brother Paul Pokladnik and Brother 3Idrich Horak and will be hauled off bIT the city unless someone else needs t is also noted that Brother Sid ?okladnik just happened to come by to watch as the work was being completed. I'm told he felt real bad about his timing. Brother Adolph also reported on the lodge wall and doors that were discussed previously.

Special Committee Sister Linda Coker thanked Brother Sid and Sister Justine Pokladnik for the use of space at Rudolph's for a successful bake sale. Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council President Carlyn Ondrusek reported she has tickets for the items to be given away at the June meeting; this is a plan to raise money for a needy organization that serves the community. (The Council will vote on which one.) This project deserves your support, please!

Czech Culture Society Sister Lillie Jarma reported that recognition was given to Brother Phil and Sister Bessie Reames for the years of

service to this society. Also an outline of the Czech Day activities at the State Fair in October was given by President Stanley Patak.

Softball Report: Brother Ben Jarma reported the team won the season's opener game and his report reveals more about this group's activities. He invites all to make a few of the games if not all of them.

Hall Rental Report: Brother Emil Petr gave his report and he also stated more help could be used on the Saturdays that we have our hall rented.

Dear Members and Friends, The meeting was called to order April 7th, with 20 members and 2 guests present. All reports were read and approved.

"Happy Birthday" was expressed through song for Gertrude Johnson, Joyce Tesar, Donald Steinman and myself, Lydia Alholm.

The correspondence received was a "Thinking of You" card from Ralph and Rosemary Gribble, who were vacationing in California. We wish them a safe return home.

Donald and Rose Steinman, after visiting friends and relatives, have just returned from a two week trip. I understand that they saw plenty of snow in South Bend, Indiana and surrounding states.

Congratulations to Mary Krivanek, daughter of Mary Ann and Kenneth Krivanek, for winning 1st place and a medal at the Cisco Jr. College Music Festival. Mary sang a solo, "Think of Me." We wish, for Mary, many more honors as she progresses in her music talent.

Congratulations are also in store for Donald Steinman, Jr., son of Donald and Rose Steinman, Sr., who won a two-week trip to Japan, which he and his wife, Bonnie thoroughly enjoyed. This trip was won after a successful salesmanship contest with the Toyota parts managers of all the dealers in the U.S. The hostesses for May 5th will be Jo Prochaska and Josephine Bugaj.

Wednesday, April 28, 1982 — VESTNiK/9 The Easter picnic at our farm was another huge success. We had rain the day before, but it did not dampen the spirits of anyone that was present.

Our son, Tony, his wife, Kathy and their three sons came from Chicago to help celebrate this annual event. They tried to soak up all the sun they could, after being in cold Chicago all winter.

We had another delightful visit with Editor Rudy and his wife, Maxine. It is always a pleasure to have them in our midst.

Louise Oujesky, how nice it was to see you, your spouse, Clem, and family at the picnic; as I recall, a year ago you had a short stay in the hospital.

I am sure Mary Picha was most delighted to be out of the hospital and enjoyed the open spaces for a change.

These two dedicated musicians provided fine entertainment Easter Sunday, April 11 at the Tick's farm. L to R are: Joe Kozel and Al Kercho.

Thank you Joe Kozel for providing all the music, not only for your talent with the accordion, bot also for the radio broadcasts of all the Czech Sunday programs. Al Kercho, you did well on the accordion, also.

Softball Teary of Lodge No. 84, Dallas Report

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Another season, our 29th consecutive one as a softball team in the DSMA Fast-Pitch Commercial Softball League play, has commenced and we opened play Tuesday night, April 13 in the Dallas City Major Fast-Pitch League with a 6 to 1 win over the Bandits.

Tommy Yates was the winning pitcher allowing 3 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts, an outstanding pitching performance.

Offensively, we scored 6 runs on 8 hits, 3 walks and 3 stolen bases.

Leading hitters were Rick Fountain with a double and 2 singles, Kerry Goad with a single, Tom Stites with a base-on-balls, Jerry Zabojnik with a single, Danny Yates with a single and a sacrifice hit, Don

TUBERCULOSIS - STILL A MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEM

It was a good way to open the season (with a win!). The field manager this year is Kerry Goad and also our second baseman. The business managers are Ron Coker, in charge of communications, setting up reservations and attending meetings. Ben Jarma is business manager in charge of team finances and team matters. We have a real good team manager and the results will prove this statement by the end of the season.

The team's annual Softball Team Benefit Dance to raise funds for this season will be held Saturday night, May 29 at our Lodge No. 84 Hall at 2625 Floyd Street. With the increased cost of doing business in every phase of fielding a team, we need your support more than ever before, if we are to survive and field a team in 1983. Please mark your calendar for May 29 and make plans to attend our dance and also invite your friends and neighbors, we need and will deeply appreciate your help.

The weekend of Saturday, April 17, we entered our first tournament in Denton, Texas. We were rained out Friday night and had to play our first game Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. against the Fort Worth Spring Creek team on a rather muddy field.

We lost the game by a final score of 5 to 0, although for a slip in the mud, the outcome might have been different or a 1 to 0 baligame.

Lionel Schulz hurled a fine game allowing 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3 batters. Offensively, we here held to one hit, a single by Kerry Goad and 2 walks by Danny Yates and one by Bruce Inge, the only new player on this year's team.

After the game, all the players and some of the wives, who came to the tournament, enjoyed a picnic of good food and refreshments. Our thanks, especially, to Ida Schulz for purchasing the f od and also thanks to those who helped serve the food, it was a delicious and enjoyable event.

Our second game was at 5 p.m. and we had to play the First Baptist Church team from Denton, a team that we wouldn't normally lose to, but lose we did by a score of 3 to 2.

Their pitcher was rather slow and this affected the timing of our hitters and eventually resulted in our defeat.

Tommy Yates hurled a fine game

allowing 5 hits, one mixup on the part of three of our players resulting in the scoring 2 runs for the win. It was an early season tournament, so mistakes were made which will not be prevalent later on in the season.

Needless to say, the guys were disappointed in their play, but they should have been and they will play much better I'm sure at their next game.

The team's next game was set for Tuesday night April 20, at Samuel Grand Diamond No. 1 against the Dallas Metro team. Incidently, all our games this season will be played at Samuel Grand Park, Tuesday night games on Diamond No. 1 and Wednesday night games are scheduled „.:T. toes on Leamond No. 2.

I will again attempt to publish our results of our games in the Vestnik this season and hope that those loyal sports fans will read our articles.

Wednesday, April 28, we play Knights Construction at 7:50 p.m. at Samuel Grand Diamond No. 2 Wednesday night, May 5, we play Hendrix Mirror and Glass at 9:10 p.m. at Samuel Grand No. 2 and Tuesday night, May 11, we play at 9:10 p.m. against the J.O. Woodard Paint and Body team. I gave you the schedule of these games and sincerely hope to see some of our members and friends rooting for the team at these games.

Only medicine taken as long as prescribed cures it. Some of the commonly used drugs are Isoniazid (INH), Rifampin (RIF), Ethambu,a, (EMB), Pyrazinamide (PZA), and Streptomycin (SM). Pyridoxine 0 Vitamin B-6 sometimes used as companion with INH to prevent neuritis.

When first line drugs do not work it is because people neglect to take them properly or have organisms that are resistant.

People who are "treatment failures" may have to have second choice drugs prescribed which are more difficult to use, less effective, and more expensive.

Proper treatment cures tuberculosis — failures are not acceptable.

How is Tuberculosis Disease prevented?

Tuberculosis disease can usually be prevented in the infected , person by taking medicine (INH) every day for cue year. Those who are knew], to be or suspected of being, infected need it.

These persons need to take prevention INH, unless there is some medical reason for not taking it.

1. Those who have a positive skin test and lung scars on x-ray.

2. Close contacts to a case of tuberculosis especially those living in the same household.

3. Those whose skin test recently turned positive.

4. Children with a positive skin test.

5. Teachers and others in the school environment who have positive skin tests.

6. Older people with positive skin test who have certain other chronic illnesses.

There is a vaccination for tuberculosis (BCG) but it is hardly ever recommended in the U.S. - most cases of tuberculosis arise in people already infected and BCG would be ineffective in this group. Also, BCG may not prevent a natural infection.

NEWSBRIEF Mrs. Mary (Frank) (Trojacek) Laznovsky, 72, died in an Ennis hospital, after having been stricken suddenly at the Ennis Sokol Hall Saturday, April 17th. Funeral services were held from Keever Funeral Chapel Monday, April 19th, with Director Sid Pokladnik officiating on behalf of the SPJST, and George Prevratil on behalf of the Southern District, American Sokol Organization. Burial was in the Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis. Sister Laznovsky was a longtime officer (secretary) of SPJST Lodge No. 135, and was a life-long worker and supporter of the Sokol Gymnastic Organization in Ennis and throughout the Southern District.

She was also president of the Ennis Czech Ladies Sewing Circle.

From the District Youth Counselors DISTRICT II DYC ANNOUNCES TRAINING CLASS The District II Training Class will be held May 10, 1982 at Lodge No. 20 in Granger, starting promptly at 9:30 a.m. so please be on time. We will try to finish by 4:30 p.m. if possible.

This is an important meeting because many items for our summer activities will be decided such as which group will go to camp first, plans for the fall meeting, YAD discussed in full, camp activities and food, a camp craft will be decided, a little on the Points and Rule Book, due dates of craft, talent and royalty

and camp application due dates. All fortes for YAD and camp and point system for 1983 will be passed out plus a decision of what activities we would plan to have for a balance of 1982, so you can see that many items will be decided; your presence is very important. PLEASE BE THERE! All leaders and assistants are invited from each lodge; we hope to see at least one from each lodge. If your assistant is coming, please try to pool rides.

SYD Jann Thomas will be present to answer any questions you may have and help to conduct a part of this training class.

Our District II Youth Achievement Day will be held July 11, 1982 at Lodge No. 177, Academy so all of you children should begin to work on your crafts and talent and royalty so you would know what you will enter; the due date for the YAD entry blanks will be June 21, 1982 so keep this date posted.

The Statewide Leaders' Training held at the Supreme Lodge was a success and everyone present seemed to have enjoyed the meeting and gained much knowledge by attending but as one of the speakers said: you can read it, or listen to it, and think about it, but, if you don't apply what you have read or heard, nothing happens and it doesn't help anyone.

We hope to see all youth clubs of.

LODGE NO. 30 YC CHANGES MEETING DATE Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club attended the District VI spring meeting at Sweet Home Sunday, April 18.

We also had a booth and we had very many pretty things to give away; this is one of our moneymaking projects we have and we really appreciate when people buy tickets from us.

We had a program too, which always turns out great. The things we presented were Stephanie Roye tap danced, Rudy Laitkep, Jr. played a number on the xylophone, and a skit "Art Linkletter" was performed by Karen Kahanek (played Art Linkletter), the little girls were Michelle Srubar, Kelli Korenek, Jean Dorotik, Vicki Dorotik and Marcy Dorotik. Then we also sang songs: "Four-Leaf Clover" and "The SPJST Song."

All of us had a good time. I would like to thank the good ladies from Sweet Home for the delicious lunch they served after the meeting.

I would like to remind the members of Lodge No. 30 Youth Club that our meeting will be held Sunday, May 16, instead of our usual first Sunday.

Dear Members, The April meeting was called to order by President Rusty Bay. Trudy Krenek led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll was then called and there were 30 members, 6 adults and 1 visitor present.

There were no minutes read, but the treasurer's report was given and accepted as read.

The meeting was then turned over to our youth leaders. We talked about YAD. So far we have two people running for queen, they are Dana Herzik and Pamela Spitzenberger.

We will be going to Astroworld July 4th.

We talked about having a car wash; the date will be decided at the May meeting.

Anyone who wants extra points at the next meeting was asked to wear a pair of tennis shoes.

The meeting was then adjourned and a movie entitled, "Ma and Pa Kettle" was shown.

Secretary Kim Schneider checked the roll call and read the minutes of the last meeting. We had 14 members present.

We gained two new members, Steve Bruggman and Carl Macek; we welcome them to our club.

Birthday celebrants this month are: Janet Marek (April 17) and Terri Vanicek (April 23).

Each member is asked to bring a billfold-size picture of themselves to be put on the Bulletin Board.

We appreciate all the help we got from our parents and members who helped us with the barbecue to raise money; we made over $600. This money will be used to go to Six Flags, so thanks to all of you!

Our social this month will be held at the lodge, Friday, April 30 starting at 6:30 p.m. This will be a family night. We will be having a hot dog supper. Ladies are asked to bring sweets. Bring your games and come and enjoy the fellowship; this is open to all members. At this social we will finalize our plans on our trip to Six Flags.

NO. 30 YC ATTENDS DISTRICT VI MEETING

Our District VI meeting has come and gone again. Taiton Lodge No. 30 was really well-represented. It was so good to see such a large turnout at this district meeting.

District VI President Rita Vanek really gave an interesting talk and she really held everyone's attention.

Many important subjects were discussed and approved.

Mr. Vanek from Victoria also gave a very interesting talk and he had many problems to talk about, but with everyone's help many things can be done. We must all work together and help each other to keep our SPJST strong. We have very good leaders so let's all get in there and help anyway we can.

Hillje Lodge No. 40, El Campo Lodge No. 50, Taiton Lodge No 30, and Hallettsville Lodge No. 4, all had prizes to raise money for the Youth Club's future use. Thanks to everyone for coming and helping our youth clubs.

Our Lodge No 30 Taiton Youth Club will hold-their next meeting Sunday, May 18 at 2:30 p.m. in the Taiton Conitnunity Center.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 107, Floresville, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother WILLIAM MERECKA, who died at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 1982, in Floresville Memorial Hospital at the age of 61 years, 3 months and 3 days.

Funeral services were held at the Vinyard Funeral Chapel at 9:30 a.m.

Tuesday followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Jeremiah Murphy, as celebrant. Interment was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Floresville.

Pallbearers were Albert Chilek, Thomas Chilek, Robert Merecka, Ronald Merecka, Timothy Sralla and Leonard Sralla.

Brother Merecka was born December 31, 1920 in Floresville, son of Joe Merecka (deceased) and Annie (Gaertner) Merecka. He attended Floresville area schools.

October 9, .1943 he married Miss Lydia Berckenhoff in Nashville, Tennessee. He served in the Army for 3 years during World War II. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Floresville, VFW Post No. 8555 Poth, Texas and SPJST Lodge No. 107.

Brother Merecka lived in Floresville most of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lydia Merecka of Floresville; daughter, Mrs.. LeRoy (Marlene) Talamantez of Floresville; sons, Vaughn Merecka and Glen Merecka, both of Floresville; mother, Mrs. Annie Merecka of Floresville; sisters, Mrs. Val (Lillie) Chilek, Mrs. Albert (Viola) Sralla and Mrs. Rosie Norris, all of Floresville; brothers, Emil Merecka and August Merecka, both of Floresville; three grandchildren, Denise and Lee Wayne Talamantei, and Donald Wayne Merecka. One son, Donald Wayne Merecka died July 2, 1967.

McGregor Beef Field Day is May 6 McGREGOR — Beef cattle research information and discussions on the future of forage and legume utilization, the feedlot industry, and marketing will be among highlights of the Beef Field Day at Texas A&M University's

Agricultural Research Center at McGregor, May 6.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the Center, Station Superintendent Scotty Pegues has announced.

Visitors will assemble in the Center's Auditorium at 9:30 a.m. for the morning program. Moderator will be Mike Cox, president of the McGregor Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. Pegues will welcome the visitors.

Dr. Neville P. Clarke, director of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station— the state's agricultural research agency — will describe the role of the McGregor Station.

Pegues will discuss the Station's experience with calfhood vaccination of heifer calves for brucellosis control during the past 10 years.

Dr. E. C. Holt, researcher and professor in forages for the Experiment Station, will talk about legumes. Dr. Monte Rouquette of Overton, researcher in forage physiology, will address the future of forage utilization in beef production.

Bill Mies of Friona, representing Friona Industries, will talk about the future of the feedlot industry.

Marketing as a consideration in beef production will be discussed by Jim Weatherby of Comanche Land and Cattle Co., Comanche.

A "dutch treat" barbecue will be available on the grounds at noon, with Clem Mikeska of Temple in charge.

The field day program will resume at 1 p.m. with discussions of Texas Agricultural Experiment Station

beef cattle breeding research presented by Dr. Charles Long and Dr. Jim 0. Sanders, researchers in animal breeding with the Experiment Station and Animal Science Department of Texas A &M. A panel discussion on the role of different types of young cattle, using live cattle for the demonstration, will follow the research discussions. Serving on the industry panel will be Scott Felton of Felton Ranches, Waco; Bill Mies of Friona Industries, and Jim Weatherby of Comanche Land and Cattle Co. Moderating the panel will be Frank Litterst of Texas A &M's Animal Science Department.

The panel presentation will conclude the formal program. Field Day visitors, however, are then invited to take part in an open house and visit various locations at the Center for additional discussions on cattle types and research work.

Minuly tyden jsem obdr2ela zpravu od nag ptibuzne z Dorchester, se smutnou zvesti, 2e jeji bratr Jaroslav Fabera je ji2 podruhe vdovcem, nebot' mantelka jeho pi. Elsie zesnula po dlouhe nemoci a te2kern titrpenim.

Dlouho trpela na ten zly kloubovy revma a dlouho si pobyla v nemocnici.

Bylo ji 60 let. Pohi-eb mela pri velkem deti ale pFece ptatele ji vyprovodit. Zanechala man2e1a, svakra a §vakrovou man2ele Josef Faberovi, dye §vakrove s maniely pi.

Minuly tyden soud byl pfelo2en zde do Dallas a vysledek byl, 2e policiste byli osvobozeni, jeliko2 pry to byla ne§fastna nahoda, 2e ti ho g se utopili. Nyni ale je§te policiste Cell 2alobe civilni, a to nevime jak dopadne. Ov§ern, eerni obeane jsou dosti rozezleni na rozsudek a celkem je hodne napjetf mezi obema stranama. Je to vse valna vac a kdovf jak vse dopadne, jestli policiste nebudou potrestani aspon trochu.

Dne 9. dubna mela zde v Dallas pohtebni °beady byvala enniska osadnice kterou asi mnozi si budou pamatovat. Byla to sl. Bo2ena Rumankova, ktera, s jejim otcem peed lety bydlela v Ennis a jeji otec byval ainnym v gni SPJST 25, nebot' vybiral vstupne tam po dlouhou dobu.

Poliebena, byla v Ennis na Myrtle htbitov, asi po boku jejiho otce ktery pFed lety zesnul. Zesnule pi-eji tichy spanek na yeenosti, aby po 2ivotnim boji odpoeivala.

Pro ty kmjany kteti maji zajem o to, jak pokraeuje stavba te nova KJT sine v Ennis, mugm sdelit, 2e pFed nekolika dny jsme byli zase v Ennis a tak jsme zajeli k to sini. Tam jsme videli p. Emilie Vitovska-Spanielova, ye veku 77 let. Byla to dcera Josefa a Karoliny (Bobalikove) Vito'vrikYch a za p. Jos. Lud gpaniela se provdala v 1924 a 2ili spolu 54 let. Pan spaniel

zesnul v 1978. Pam-. Spanielova pted easem nest'astne upadla a zlomila si nohu v kyali a nejakY cas byla v Opatrovne a nyni ode§la na veenost.

Zanechaval dva bratry: Jos. W. Vitovskeho v Ennis a Karla Vitovskeho v Telico. Polifeb byl z kostela sv. Jana a ulo2ena na htbitov Myrtle. V nedeli 18. dubna konala se zde v meste 'Jana slavnost kdy2 nova knihovna, (ktera stala vice jak 42 a dolaru), byla otevtend a ptedana na§i vetejnosti. Ptitomno pry bylo vice jak dva tisice lidi, tee atyti mayorove (tti bkvali a nynej§i) a nekteri jini ptedaci. Hudba Armady Spasy pekne hrala a zpevaci zpivali a teditelka knihovny pi. Lillian Bradshawova, odevzdala tuto chloubu naeho Dallas, a 2e nebylo §patne poaasi, tak se kakly hezky pobavil a vgide se v budove podivali a chvalili, jak ve jest krasne. Internatni sportovni §kola v Banske Bystrici (Banska Bystrica) (Sttedoslovensky kraj) zvitezila letos v aeskoslovenskern finale steedo§kolskych her v atletice, ktere se konalo v Ostrava (Ostrava) (Severomoraysky kraj). Skola ziskala prvenstvi dru2stev v 1,rech etytech kategoriich chlapcu a divek.

Tato g(ola je mlada, byla vytvotena na podzim 1978. Jejim poslanim je peipravovat talentovanou mlade2 pro, dal g sportovni rust ye sttediscich vrcholoveho sportu v atletice, sjezdovern a klasickem ly2ovani, biatlonu, sportovni gymnastice chlapca a basketbalu divek.

Ueebni osnovy sportovni internam-. §koly v Banske Bystrici obsahujf ptedmety jako na kaklem jinem gymnaziu. Absolventi teto koly se tedy mohou uchazet o ptijeti ke studiu na jakekoli vysoke §kole.

The Czech-, alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the earka, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, d', t', g.

To further increase the number of sounds and letters, the haeek or caret is used for some hushing-sounds. r—t As indicated previously, the following are hard consonants: d, t, n, h, ch, k and r. If these hard consonants are followed by the pIt BIt sound, the sound Must be spelled with a y or y, thusly: kdyby (byl) chytry tyden kytice iadny rytft hybny The soft consonants are d', t', S, d, t, and also c and j. If these are followed by the ee (bee, see) sound, the sound must be spelled with an i or 1, thusly: &vat-. sfti ticho efslo nieitel tfzek iivy cizinec jiskra Words with i or fin their root are in the vast majority.

The "neutral" consonants b, p, v, f, m, I, s, and z, are followed by either i, 1, or y, y, according to their origin or derivation.

USE OF CAPITAL LETTERS: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in. Czech and English.

Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1963.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE — FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR — INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vam, VAS; Ty, Tvdj, Tobe The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the

polite form is capitalized only when referring-to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are -addressing only one person.

WRONG: Vy, (1 person) jste veera jeli do mesta.

RIGHT. Vy jste jel do mesta. DO NOT USE A PLURAL VERB UNLESS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO MORE THAN ONE PERSON. The pronoun ja is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality.

(This is done in English). Ex., Mam eesky ienu. (I have a Czech- wife).
