Modern day families find very little time to spend together. Each local unit can serve to strengthen the American family by encouraging all families to adopt a "Family Night in the Home". Here are some suggested activities for your family: Make a family cassette with each member of the family contributing to the recording, and send to grandparents or other family member who lives far away. Be sure to begin the tape by identifying the date and the occasion for the family gathering.

Family Sing-Along: Obtain song books at library or local music store and select a program of favorite songs which the family can sing together. Include some simple songs if real young children are involved.

Let each member select a favorite song. You could also use some singalong records; or, if you have a pianist in the family, it's even more fun.

Letter-writing. Select a night when everyone will write that longdelayed letter - to a friend or relative; to a family member away at college or in the military service; to someone in a nursing home or hospital. Some letters could be a composite with each family member contributing a paragraph.

Select a television show for the family to view together. Such a family activity provides an opportunity for a discussion of those segments which may not reflect traditional family values as well as those that do. In this setting a television show can be a useful learning experience. If a television show continually violates these standards, you can, as a family, write to the network as well as the sponsor of the show.

Family Reading: Select a short story or an article of common interest to be read aloud by one or more family members. We are never too old — or too young — to enjoy someone reading to us. Such an activity is particularly meaningful for an older family member whose eyesight may be impaired.

Home Movie Night. Plan an evening to bring out all those old movies which were made as the family grew up. They can be a source of many happy memories and the reminiscing that follows renews an awareness of how important family members are to each other.

Family Traditions: Achieve a special sense of love and spirit within the family by developing family traditions. They come about quite naturally because of a mutual desire to repeat a particular experience - such as shopping for the Christmas tree; or a special meal; exchanging personal hand-made gifts on special occasions. Family traditions bring new dimensions to family life.

In reviewing the past week or so, your editor visited the District V spring meeting at Stefanik Lodge No. 142 in Houston and found a rather large crowd of members attending the meeting. In fact, the hall was practically filled to capacity. The Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Brother Rudy Dybala, along with the Choral Group also of Lodge 88, under the direction of Brother Tim Kostom, certainly proved enjoyable for the two hours preceding the meeting and during the noon meal served by the host lodge. Sometimes it seems that we probably do not appreciate all that these entertaining groups do for us, and, actually, the only reward they receive is our appreciation. I believe they saw that displayed rather well Sunday, March 14 at the District V spring meeting; this editor can only state sincere thanks and keep up the good work! I am sure they do it not for glory, but mainly to entertain and also for their enjoyment.

It was nice to visit with many members and friends from times past and the meeting was convened promptly at 2 p.m. by District V President Tillie Helmcamp after the singing of the two national anthems: in Czech and English.

There were reports made by all the district officers and very much to the point. There was very little time spent on unnecessary conversations and/or reporting. District V Director Louis Hanus made a rather thorough report on the activities of its district of which District V can be justly proud.

An observation made by this editor (to himself mentally) was the realization of how time really does pass; Lodge No. 88 President Larry Pflughaupt was there serving in the capacity as president of the largest lodge in our SPJST and your editor remembers when he was just a youngster in the Youth Club. It is gratifying to know that our youth in the Youth Clubs right now actually are, in the future, to become the officers of our lodges in their existence and fraternal activities of our Society. Many times it takes devotion of the parents, the officers, and youth leaders to spend with no reward, except our appreciation for their efforts, so let us support them all the way wherever we can.

Once again, it was a pleasurable day spent at Stefanik Lodge No. 142 and a day's activities that everyone enjoyed. From the President's Office 1981 Net Statistics And Other Information Dear Members: Now that our annual statement to the Insurance Department in Austin and the actuary's, vice president's, financial secretary's, and secretary's work have been completed, we can report to you on the net gain figures for 1981, as of 31 December 1981.

Article 37(b) of our by-laws also stipulates that the president makes periodic reports to the membership.

This is the second such report this year. (See Vestnik issue of December 30th for the first report).

Highlights. Summarizing the highlights, we see the following for 1981: Mortuary premiums collected increased by 4.49 percent. This represents in excess of 2 million dollars again in premium income for 1981, another record all-time high for the SPJST! Income investment was up 11.83 percent Considering all factors involved, including the national economic climate, I think that we had a very good year in 1981. We issued a total of 2,732 certificates for $21,190,684 in life insurance. This shows that there was some hard and diligent work on the part of our sales representatives, for which we are grateful. We issued more certificates than we did the year before and more in life insurance coverage. Our members, both old and new, have been buying larger policies. This is significant. Last year I reported that our average policy amounted to approximately $7,277. Our average issued policy at the present is in the amount of $7,756. This increase in the average amount of the certificates can be attributed to our emphasis on an improved training program for our sales representatives. This, in turn, has increased the amount of mortuary premiums received, which also increased our investment income.

Net Gain. For the year 1981 we had a net gain of 287 certificates and a net increase in insurance issued of $9,185,020. This amount in net certificate increase can be attributed to three factors: 1) The absence of new lodge facilities in 1981 which had dramatically affected our growth in the past few years; 2) An important factor continues to be our No. 1 national economic enemy — INFLATION; and 3) Explanation: The figure of 287 net gain in certificates may be misleading because the 2,732 new certificates replaced all the terminations (deaths, lapses, expirys, surrenders and maturities) held by older members in much smaller amounts, whereas the balance of the new certificates were sold to members representing much larger amounts of insurance. We're off to a good start in 1982! We appreciate all your efforts in behalf of the SPJST.

on the front page or cover. I think everyone will agree that it is a very vital communications medium for our members. In Financial Secretary Mikulas' current report of receipts and disbursements for the month of February we see that Vestnik publishing costs amounted to a little over $5,400. During the same month, Vestnik postage costs amounted to $5,000. This tells you that the cost of postage is getting very close to equaling the cost of publication. There's nothing we can do about the postage cost because that is set by Uncle Sam and we have to live with it. We believe that we are getting the best publication for the money that we are paying, so there's no complaint there. The point I'm trying to make is that with the Vestnik costing us in the neighborhood of $65,000 a year in publication costs and about $60,000 a year in postage that we need to adopt a firm philosophy that the Vestnik does serve us as the official mouthpiece for the - Society, certainly insofar as reports from the Supreme Lodge are concerned. Here in the Home Office we subscribe to the philosophy that since the Vestnik is our principal communications tool that we are determined to minimize correspondence by letter in all instances where a report or notice would do the same job in the Vestnik. There's no doubt that postage costs will continue to increase in the future. First-class postage on a letter now costs 204; heaven only knows what it will be three or four years from now. I stressed in the recent workshop that it behooves all members to read the Vestnik carefully each week for important information relating to the lodges, districts, and the Society in general. I'm amused when some members tell me that they don't read the Vestnik because, "I can't read Czech." What they are saying is a total fallacy because everyone who does read it knows that only a few pages are in the Czech language.

The message is: Since the Vestnik is our official organ, read it.

Miscellaneous. The average American's life expectancy has increased more than 50% during this century, according to the American Council of Life Insurance.

In 1900 a baby boy had an average life expectancy of 46 years and a baby girl could look forward to living 48 years on the average.

Today, the life expectancy of newborn males is about 70 years while newborn females can expect to live nearly 78 years. Although the

number of older men has been increasing, a smaller proportion of them are in the labor force. In 1950, some 46% of men 65 and older were in the labor force; by 1980 this percentage had dropped to 19. While the number of older Americans in nursing homes are on the rise, they represent only a small portion of persons age 65 or older — less than 4% in 1977, the date of the last survey.

Speaking of the passage of time, do you realize that in less than 20 years we will be on the threshold of the 21st Century? Ready or not, the future will come and it belongs to those who prepare for it.

District VII Director's Report Dear Readers:• One of the most pleasant duties associated with being director of my district is the opportunity to visit with various lodges within the district and reporting to,you some of the outstanding people and activities within that lodge.

Hoping that I will not sound boastful, I would like to report some of the activities going on in Lodge No. 117. Their quarterly meeting was held Thursday, March 10, at the Hrncir home. Brother Kenneth Foerster, who has been h member of the SPJST for about four years, serves the lodge well as president.

His precise, methodical procedure has solved several problems the lodge has struggled with for several years. The new slate of officers do their respective jobs well and are to be commended. They are President Kenneth Foerster, Vice President Frances McDonald, Secretary Betty Jurica, Financial-Secretary Helen Pavelka, Treasurer Kathryn Marek, Youth Leader Eugene Hrncir, assisted by Betty Jurica.

The lodge voted to send $100 to the recently established SPJST College Scholarship Fund. Five dollars of this amount was a donation from a member, Ben Kaspar, who now lives in Utah, plus a $10 lodge donation made in memory of Sister Frances Kaspar in lieu of flowers, with the remainder coming from lodge funds. education, will benefit from their generosity.

Another fraternal act which deserves mention was done by Brother Edwin Jurica, a member of Lodge No. 79 and related to several of our members. At a drawing held recently by the Youth Club, the first prize of $50 was won by Brother Jurica. He promptly donated the money back to the youth club. This donation will help toward a needed bus repair and is most appreciated, reported the youth leader, Brother Hrncir.

A graduating senior, Frances Faye McDonald, has been named valedictorian of Tulose-Midway High School. I offer her my personal congratulations and wish her the best in the years ahead. We all benefit from this fine honor earned by one of our younger members.

An honor of a different kind was won by her grandmother, Sister Betty Jurica. Betty, with the help of her husband, Edwin, entered a contest drawing held by a local TV station. Betty was the lucky winner of a week's trip to London, with air fare, lodging, and expenses for two paid by the station. She, accompanied by Frances McDonald, left Saturday, March 13 and returned March 20. We are all looking forward to hearing about their experiences and wish we could have been along!

The lodge instructed the Financial-Secretary Sister Helen Pavelka, to begin compiling a membership register for Lodge No. 117. Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, has printed such a booklet, and I feel this would be a great idea for all our lodges to copy.

It contains names, addresses, telephone numbers, birth dates of all members, current officers and related information. I am looking forward to seeing this register in its completed form, Sister Helen. I know you will do a good job, as usual.

The officers reported they enjoyed the Officers' WorkshoP held in Temple March 6. They felt it was very informative and thank the Supreme Lodge officers for doing such a good job presenting the material.

I look forward to visiting many lodges in the district this year. Just a note telling one when and where would be appreciated. I know there are interesting people doing outstanding jobs throughout District VII and our entire state.

The District VII spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 28, 1982 at the Eagles Hall in New Braunfels.

Hamburgers and homemade desserts will be served beginning at 11 a.m.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m.

Lodge President Roy Simank called the meeting to order with Curley Gustafson leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

Lodge To Honor 50-Year Recipients

Dear Members: Our meeting of Lodge No. 24 was called to order by President Dan Sebek.

The flag was presented by Kim Schneider and Kristie Waits, who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing in a minute of silence for our deceased member, Sister Frances Adamek.

On the sick list, we have Brother Dan Hoelscher who was in the hospital and is now recuperating at home. We wish him and any member who may be ill a speedy recovery.

We welcomed our visitors, Mary Dornhoefer and Doris Vanicek.

We want to thank Brother Lynn and Sister Arleen Tschoerner for donating and planting shrubs in the planter which is in the front of the hall.

We discussed that the Donation Committee donated $100 to the Bell County Fair/Livestock Show.

Because of this donation we, got an invitation to a dinner held in Temple and Brother E. J. and Sister Laveda Geistman represented our lodge and attended this dinner.

We had a report that President Dan Sebek, Secretary Pat Vanicek and E. J. Geistman attended the Officers' Workshop in Temple Saturday, March 6. We are glad our officers are interested enough in their jobs to attend these workshops to learn more about their jobs.

Chairman Bobby Hoelscher resigned from the Dance/Dinner Committee due to many other obligations so the rest of the committee will continue in planning this.

Secretary Pat Vanicek read a thank-you note from the family of Sister Frances Adamek for the flowers.

A matter was brought up by the Board that there is extra help needed at some of our dances and these members volunteered: Brothers Dan Sebek, Joe Sebek, Curtis Schneider and Wilburn Murrow.

We talked about having a special door at our rear exit and Brother Lynn Tschoerner said he would look into this matter.

New members' names were brought to the membership to be accepted into the lodge. They were:

A report was given by Youth Leader' Carol Chervenka that they had plans to go to the movie Tuesday, March 16 for their social for this month. She also mentioned the barbecue the youth is sponsoring Sunday, March 28 to be served at 2 p.m. at the lodge. Everyone support the youth and get your tickets which will be sold, in advance, until Wednesday, March 24. They are proud of the youth room which was just recently finished but now they need it furnished and the mother lodge said they would look into purchasing tableland chairs.

This committee consisting of Sisters Louise Zavodny, LaVerne Cabla and Arleen Tschoerner volunteered to plan the event for the 50year members; when the plans are finalized, I will put it in the Vestnik including the names of the eligible members.

Members present, having birthdays, were Lorene Haisler, Doris Coots, David Vanicek, Millie Schiller, Patricia Castillo, Darrel Murrow and Kristie Waits. Those having anniversaries were Brother Ben and Sister Regina Zabcik, Brother Lynn and Sister Arleen Tschoerner, Brother Joe and Sister Bernice Sebek. Seaton Lodge Announces April Meeting Lodge No. 47 held their regular monthly meeting March 7 with President Jerry Pechal calling the meeting to order at 2 p.m. Flagbearers Mark Tepera and Nora Skrabanek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance after which we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of deceased members, Sister Ginger Klusacek of Temple and Brother Tom Hurta of Chicago, Ill. May their souls rest in peace.

President Pechal welcomed the following visitors: Mrs. Millie Schiller of Seaton, Ann Balusek from Lodge 15 and Joe Krahulik of Temple.

All officers were present and gave their respective reports. Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the correspondence which consisted of a `Thank-you' note from Sister Clara Hejl for the get-well cards she received while she was in the hospital. Sister Hejl was able to attend our meeting and was welcomed by her friends after an absence of several months. It was good to see you again, Mrs. Hejl!

Correspondence also consisted of a `Thank-you' note from the Alfred L. Klusacek family for the spray of flowers from the lodge. The Junior Fair and Livestock Show also thanked the lodge for the monetary donations.

We had one new policy accepted: Frank Spanhel, Jr. Financial Secretary Willie Kohutek stated that David Beach reported as our member in the February meeting actually belongs to Lodge 49, Rowena.

Reported on the sick list were: Dorothy Morris, (she also attended our meeting — good to have you back, Dorothy!); also on the sick list are: Aubrey Weatherford, Mrs. John Kelarak, Mrs. Vlasta Hruska, and Tom Merka. We wish all of you a speedy recovery and hope you can be with us again, soon. Also, I would like to report that Evelyn Heese, our bar chairperson, was admitted into the hospital the week after our meeting. Hope you get to come home soon, Evelyn, and wish you a speedy recovery.

Maintenance Chairman Woodrow Marek reported the water cooler for the youth room is on order (and has been installed since our last meeting). There will be another workday Saturday, March 27 starting at 7:30 in the morning; again, a lot of volunteers with hammers and elbow-grease are needed. I'm sure there will be a lunch for the workers, possibly followed by a "Happy Hour". Maybe, with enough good help, the storeroom will be properly leveled, painted and be in perfect shape to be usable again.

Financial Secretary Willie Kohutek, again, reminded the members that payment on policies must be received by him 30-45 days after billing to avoid suspension.

This has been set up because of the new computer system at headquar-

ters. He has to report to headquarters if payments are not received by him and this makes the computer very unhappy and who wants an unhappy computer!

Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris reported on the Officers' Workshop Saturday, March 6. He was very happy with the good turnout and felt that much was accomplished.

Audit Chairman Frankie Klinkovsky announced an audit of all books will be held Thursday, April 1 at 7 p.m.

Youth Leader Mike Wilson gave a very good Youth Report. The youth will sponsor a chili supper Friday, April 2 starting at 6 p.m. They will also have a cake walk, auction and possibly a country store. They need to raise some money so come out, bring plenty of money, have fun and support our youth! They need us.

At our next meeting, April 4, Anton Vitek and Lillian Kosarek will be recipients of 50-year pins; also the youth will have their Easter egg hunt. This will be followed by a covered dish supper; please bring a covered dish and dessert. Our meeting will start at 2 p.m. as usual; so come early, stay for the meeting, "Happy Hour" and supper.

Birthdays celebrated in March are: Rosie Craft, Clara Hejl, Adeline Kohutek and Woodrow Marek. Mr. and Mrs. Anton Motl celebrated their anniversary in March. A belated happy anniversary to Mr. and Mrs. Nick Morris who celebrated their 25th anniversary in February.

Door prizes were won by Lenora Talasek and Ruby L. Bolton. The meeting was followed by "Happy Hour" and lunch prepared by Sister Vallie Zavodny, kitchen chairperson for February.

Highlights

After Vice President Ted Kocian convened our first quarterly meeting in 1982, he announced that President Ernest Zahirniak was in the hospital and that he (Brother Kocian) will conduct the meeting; Bob Wright, financial-secretary and treasurer, was in St. Louis, Missouri at this time, so his report was also given by Brother Kocian.

The minutes of our annual meeting for December 14, 1981 were read and approved without any corrections or additions. Other reports were also adopted by the attending members.

Several correspondence were acknowledged.

It was then reported that additional expenses resulted from necessities that required attention at the lodge.

There were no deaths reported since our last meeting.

We had two members who had their policies converted from their JTs; they were Elaine Junek (who transferred from Lodge No. 88) for $5,000 and John Mitchell. III, for $10,000; we welcome them to our lodge.

Recognition was given to Rev. Lawrence and Mrs. Barbara Junek, and Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Volcik.

Congratulations was extended, at the meeting, to Mr. and Mrs. Jan

Vaculik, who became the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl, named Jana Marcela.

A report was made of our two 50year pin recipients, Sister Louise Blahuta of Harlingen and Brother Robert Reznicek of Fort Worth; both members received their pins from the Home Office along with a congratulatory letter, and a letter from Lodge No. 54. Brother Joe Dujka, Sr. was recognized as a 57year SPJST member; he is past president of Lodge 126 Ross, that merged with Lodge No. 54.

While attending the recent workshop at the SL, I found it to be very rewarding. The two officials in the secretary-treasurer's and financial-secretary's departments at the SL excelled in their presentations. It was educational to hear of the experiences of other lodges. The Home Office utilized Seaton Star Hall for serving the complimentary noon meal, and appreciation is extended to those who were involved with the workshop responsibilities.

Before proceeding into new business, it was announced that the lodge facilities were rented for New Year's Eve. Committees named and read are herewith listed: Kitchen — Mona Zahirniak, chairman, Margie Wright, Agnes Mynar, Josephine Kocian and Lillie Mynar.

Audit — Ted Kocian, Beanie Kacir and Mona Zahirniak.

Property — John Mynar, chairman, Freddie Pavlas, James Pavlicek, Jr., and Joe Mynar Bar — Ernest Zahirniak, chairman, Ted Kocian, Johnnie Uptmore, John Mynar, Joe Mynar and Mike Mazanec It was recommended and approved that the lodge send something appropriate to Brother Ernest Zahirniak while he is hospitalized. Also a get-well card was passed to all attending members wishing him a speedy recovery.

A date was not set for our second quarterly meeting, and Sister Barbara Junek's name was drawn for the door prize.

Before adjournment, premium refund checks were distributed to the attending recipients; the meeting then adjourned at 3:40 p.m.

Progress Continues At Needville Lodge Good

Dear Members: Our March 14 meeting of Lodge No. 81 was called to order by President Charlie Matcek promptly at 2 p.m.

Benita Walzel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

All officers answered the roll call.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Mary Werner and she also read thank-you cards from the Otto Jeske family, the Alvin Zemanek family and the Cecil Baker family.

Financial Secretary Allene Zwahr gave her report.

Willie Mae Kuykendal gave the treasurer's report. Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel reported on the activities at the hall and then

gave the financial report. All of these reports were accepted as given.

Those of our members in various hospitals are: Wesley Joe Werner, LeeRoy Kamas, Louis Heideman, Rosalinda Hartfiel, Frances Sitta and Rudy Paweleak; several of these patients are back at home and we hope all of you are back on the road to recovery.

Mary Werner gave a good report on the officers' workshop held at Temple March 6 and also Allene Zwahr and Edwin Susan reported a worthwhile trip.

Members who make visits to the Rest Home should keep up with the number of hours you spend there throughout the year and report that to your secretary.

Vlasta Hurta reported on behalf of the Kitchen Committee that they were discussing the possibility of covering the kitchen floor with a vinyl flooring. This was put into a motion and Benita Walzel and Vlasta Nowotny were appointed to check on the price and get an estimate to be reported at our next meeting. It was decided to cover the floor of the kitchen and also the bar.

Our next meeting falls on Easter Sunday, so we have changed our meeting time to Tuesday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. Everyone please mark this change on your calendar.

Refund checks were handed out and yours truly was the recipient of the door prize. There being no other business, the meeting adjourned, and everyone enjoyed a good lunch and departed.

No. 88 Birthday Club News Lodge

March 10, 1982 Sister Pearl Hanka called the meeting to order.

Sister Rosalee Kostom read the minutes and they were approved.

Sister Lillie Spies gave the financial report and it was also approved.

Sister Mary Kosut, our Sunshine Lady, was not up to par so she couldn't give us her report. We missed her and hope you will be back next month.

Sister Bessie Vasula was looking great from just having surgery a week ago. She got a wonderful report from her doctor.

Sister Linda Bricker is still in Heights Hospital, we hope she will return home soon.

A motion was made and carried to start selling tickets for our moneymaking project for Splash Day — June 6.

Eva Podrazam donated a door prize for the Birthday Club Sisters, it was won by Sister Lillie Spies.

The pickles were donated by Geraldine Hlozek at the last Wednesday's luncheon.

Hostesses for March were Geraldine Hlozek, Bessie Dewer, Margaret Bohac and Doris Knapick.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Bessie Dewer, Bessie Vasula and Kathy Trefell.

Our next luncheon and meeting will be held April 7 and 14; the Birthday Club will serve a covered dish meal.

Lodge No. 88 News The dance held Saturday, March 13, with music by the Vrazel's Polka Band had a fair attendance with a birthday celebration at Table No. 8.

Friends of A. J. Lenert surprised him for his birthday with a speciallybaked German Chocolate Cake baked by Sister Annie Green. The cake had three fake candles for A.J. to make a wish and blow them out; A. J., all out of breath, could not blow them out; this brought out a lot of laughter and jokes to the embarrassment of the celebrant and his lady friend Stephanie Schulte.

Three surrounding tables took part in this birthday festivity with lots of delicious food served during intermission. Happy Birthday!

Hosting this dance, Sister Lorena Lindemann was in charge and also in the box office with her husband, Karl, and son-in-law, Verner Sokol, seating the guests while Diane Sokol was at the door. The two granddaughters, age 4, and 10, (all dressed up) stayed around their parents and grandparents enjoying it.

The District V meeting held Sunday, March 14, at Lodge No. 142, was well-attended, of course, as usual, Lodge No. 88 was also wellrepresented. The dinner served was very good and the home-baked pastries were delicious. Election of officers for District V took place and all present officers were re-elected.

The fall meeting will be held at Lodge No. 88.

Again this year, February 21, our lodge sent one of our young members, Lynn Pflughaupt, our flagbearer, to Washington, D.C. with a group of students from Reagan High School for one week to participate in the Close-up Foundation and observe our government in action. In addition to attending the seminar, they observed the Senate and the Supreme Court in session, toured the Capital, the offices of Senator Lloyd Bentson, Senator John Tower

and Representative Mickey Leeland, visited the Washington Monument, Jefferson's Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery (to visit the grave of President John F. Kennedy) and also observed the changing of guards at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Lynn enjoyed the trip and especially the plane ride; he is a senior at Reagan High and will graduate in May, 1982.

Benny and Stacy Kocich had a real surprise for their 41st Wedding Anniversary planned by their son, Dennis and friend, Debbie. While comfortably watching television they were aroused with a knock on the front door. Bennie, reluctantly, went to the door and opened it and, all of a sudden the heavens broke loose with a loud "surprise" from about 30 members of the family loaded with food and refreshments to celebrate this lovely couple's 41st anniversary. It is about two weeks now and Stacy is still in a shock. We all wish you many, many more!

Mrs. Sophie Kocich, mother of Evelyn Vornsand now residing in the Colonial Nursing Home in Schulenburg, Texas, was surprised by her close friends and the guests of the home with a surprise party March 9, 1982 for her 89th birthday.

Mrs. Otilie Bucek, mother of Mickey Rice, also resides in the Colonial Nursing Home and shares a room with her sister, Sophie Kocich.

Happy Birthday to you on your 89th birthday!

Sister Betty Bravenec is hobbling along on crutches; she has her leg in a heavy cast. Betty had a freak accident while watching television, but during the commercial she fell asleep and her foot did too (some of us had that experience) and when she woke up to get out of the chair, her feet didn't find anything to stand on and she fell and broke the bone above her ankle, then a rush trip to the emergency and now, over three weeks, she is in a cast and another three weeks with a built-up heel. Too bad, but it could have been much worse.

Brother Henry Chudej, 3 weeks ago, was rushed to Polly Ryan Hospital in Rosenberg, Texas with a heart attack. His mother, Louise Chudej, our Birthday Club Sister, was very worried. Henry, we wish you a speedy recovery.

Czech classes, under the supervision of Mr. William Souchek, began March 2 and will last ten weeks with 2 hour sessions: from 7:30 p.m. at Lodge No. 88, located at 1435 Beall Street.

Youth Club Easter Hunt will take place Sunday, April 11.

Lodge No. 154 Ft. Worth Plans Easter Picnic At Turk's Farm

Our monthly meeting was called to order by President Mary Ann Kieschnick Friday, March 12 at 8:05 p.m.

The 26 members, who were present, stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag, and remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed social member, Otto Kiphen.

Roll call of officers and officers' reports were given. All officers were present.

Sick members for the month were Lydia Froehlich, Viola Kiphen, Elsie Hermis and Monroe Koehn.

New members are Kenneth Regan Deleon, Jr., James Sobota, and Calvin Ray Dodd, additional insurance; the sales representatives were Alvin Melnar, 1; and Sidon Tumis, 2.

Some of our officers attended the Officers' Workshop which was held in Temple this year. It was a very informative workshop and it was a very beneficial to our officers. We also got to tour the museum while we were at the home office. This was very interesting and we urge all our members to go see the Museum if you ever get to go to Temple.

The $50 capsule prize drawing was: Janet Cordes (absent), $5 consolation prize went' to Sherrill Bellinger. Door prizes went to Alvin E. Melnar, Mary Ann Kieschnick, Nelson Jochen and Alice Jochen.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our President Jerry Milan.

The members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased Sister Frances Hlas. We extend our sincere sympathy to all of the family.

Brother Milan made welcome Sister Powell and our guests, Mrosl and Anna Brozek from Czechoslovakia who are here visiting their son Vladimir Brozek. They stayed for the social following the meeting and seemed to enjoy it very much. Sister Mary Hale was really able to carry on a good conversation with them.

All the reports were approved as read.

Thank-you notes were received from the family of Sister Hlas and Mary Picha.

Brother Milan and Sister Mary Renfro gave good reports on the "Workshop" they attended. Brother Don Steinman, our vice president, also attended and Sister Henrietta Milan went. They said the Museum was fantastic and that everyone should see it. They all enjoyed the day.

Our Easter Picnic was discussed and it will be Easter Sunday, April 11 at Tirk's Farm. It will be as in the past; you bring your food, refreshments, a dozen colored eggs, your folding chairs and card tables.

We wish them a safe trip and good luck to our gymnasts.

Sister Carrie Milan was honored at a surprise Birthday Party in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Brother and Sister Carolyn and Bobby Cleveland. She was surprised. Hope you have many more, Carrie!

Due to our next meeting falling on Easter it will be held at the picnic.

Pasadena Rozkvet Lodge No. 172 Held Ground-Breaking Ceremonies Dear Members and Friends: The March 10 meeting was wellattended. It is a good feeling to see so many members interested in their lodge. Please keep coming and bring your friends and neighbors, maybe they will want to become members, too.

We had good reports from the officers and the various committees.

There was only one member on the sick list and that was Brother Victor Peter; he is a heart patient and will be having some surgery March 25. We wish Brother Peter a speedy recovery so he can be back at the lodge with us and rejoice with us over the building of our new lodge home. He worked very, very hard on this project for a long time and especially the last 3 years while he was president of the lodge.

It is almost hard to believe that we really are going to get to build our new hall because we waited for this for so long.

Brother Dan Berry brought the shovel for the ground-breaking to the meeting to give to Brother Joe Krenek who has charge of that activity. By the time you read this, the ground-breaking ceremonies will have taken place; a letter was sent to the membership with the details for March 21 at 1 p.m. I hope all of you got your letter.

I waited until we would have a picture of our 1982 local lodge officers, but we still don't have one; maybe later. Our 1982 officers are: President Dan Berry, 1st Vice President Jerry Dressler, 2nd Vice President Julius Zella, Youth

Those of you who were officers during 1981 and before, we wish to express our appreciation for all the work you did for the SPJST; you will not get to rest too long because there will be lots of work in the future for everyone.

Four of our officers, President Dan Berry, 1st Vice President Jerry Dressler, Secretary Vlasta Machann and Financial Secretary Lorine Wiley attended the Officers' Workshop March 6, 1982 at the Supreme Lodge in Temple. We wish to thank the Supreme Lodge officers for making this workshop possible.

We know that a lot of work and preparation went into this to make it informative and enjoyable. Those of you who came early had time to tour the library, archives and museum; this alone was worth the trip. An extra treat which was not planned was to see everything in and around Temple covered white with snow. It was-beautiful! At lunch-time the sun was brightly shining with most of the snow already melted, it turned out to be a beautiful day.

The District V meeting Sunday, March 14 at Lodge No. 142 was wellattended. It was a good meeting and very enjoyable. The Czech Concert Orchestra and Choral Club from Lodge No. 88 were both very good entertainment during the dinner hour. The food was excellent and try not to miss the next one! It is always nice to see the Youth Club too and visit with friends, old and new.

Lodge No. 172 will be represented at the Strawberry Festival this year. We will have an SPJST booth; the dates are April 22, 23, 24 and 25 at the Pasadena Fair Grounds, 7600 Red Bluff Road, Pasadena, Texas.

We will not sell anything; it will be a display, also prizes so come by and visit.

I hope everyone is well and'is able to enjoy the beautiful outdoors at this time of the year. The bluebonnets and dogwood will be in full bloom soon and many other flowers are beginning to bloom.

Let's take time to enjoy them and smile and be friendly every day.

Dear SPJST Members, Lodge 172 Leaders, SL Officers, and Leaders from other Lodges: We, the members at Lodge No. 172, are very proud of your help and patronage in everyone's best performance with the help that all of you did and willingly continue attending from far and near places to socialize with us. Our appreciation is from the bottom of our hearts. We wish all of you the best of health and happiness in the future, so you can perform the duties as leaders or assistants in your lodges throughout Texas.

We also want to wish our dear brothers and sisters who may be

sick or under doctor's care in the hospital or rest homes. To our departed beloved brothers and sisters, may God grant them eternal rest in peace. We pray for all our SPJST lodges and other fraternal lodges in Texas, also our fallen heroes of our wars.

Our lodge wishes to express a speedy recovery to past president Brother Victor Peter of Lodge No. 172 who suffered a heart attack some time ago. March 15, the Mikeska family was in touch with Brother Peter at his home where he is recuperating, however, he will be going back to Saint Luke's Hospital for observation on the 25th of March. Brother Peter, we all are with you in our prayers because you are not forgotten after all the struggle you have done for Lodge No. 172 to become a progressive lodge.

At the March 10th meeting, Brother Joseph Krenek was handed a gold-plated shovel to dig into our longtime wanted grounds of our upcoming new lodge home for Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena. The groundbreaking ceremony was set for March 21st at 1 p.m., which will be in the past when this letter is printed.

However, our sincere invitations have been sent before time to all lodges in our District V and districts. throughout Texas.

We are hoping that Sister Sophie Baker is recuperating; she is being missed among our attendance, especially at the District V Spring meeting held Sunday, March 14 at Stefanik Lodge No. 142 in Houston.

Oh, it was a tremendous attendance and everyone had a very good time being hosted by the leaders and members of Lodge No. 142. At this meeting all the District V officers were re-elected and let's hope God will help them in the future to handle all the duties in our district as officers and also to Brother Louis Hanus, a great philosopher, who helps others in the lodges. We met many brothers and sisters from other lodges, thanks for being present at the meeting. We also had a chance to meet with Brother and Sister Joshowitz from Rosenberg who are both great persons; we enjoyed talking with both of you and there were too many others whose names filled my tablet; all of you are great admirers. At the meeting all of you were great and good listeners hearing our District V officers handling the orders of the day of the past, present and future. The dinner was also enjoyed which was prepared by the hosts of the lodge.

We appreciated it very much, and your fine hospitality will be remembered for a long time. The Czech Concert Orchestra from Lodge No 88 was lovely for my feet, because I almost dug a hole in 142's floor by tapping my feet; also the singers in the Choral Group from Lodge No. 88 were great with Brother Tim Kostom as director, and Sister Helen Hegwood singing our national anthems while our hearts were trembling over the joy of God Blessed Peace in America.

The flagbearers, Dennis Veselka and Keith Kieschnick brought out the flags before the meeting started.

The auction sale was a great success, and our past happenings at the lodge of last week's socializing and dancing made for a happy weekend of fine entertainment. It was also excellent and great for the

people who attended from our, cities of Houston and Pasadena. We will be having all types of activities in the future. At the present time we are having large attendance at our dances and the music, the bands play, are ballroom, variety and country-western. Our invitation is extended to all of you to come to our lodge in Pasadena. The selection of bands for 1982 are great and will be highly admired by our dancing fans.

March 13 dance was another large turnout with music furnished by Neal Hart and Pure Country. Hosts at the door were our president, Brother Dan Berry and Sister Margie Lee Nelms who greeted the arriving guests.

March 20 we have Henry Repka playing for our dance, but this event will be in the past when this letter is printed.

March 27 we will have Ray Krenek from Sealy, Texas playing your favorite music (ballroom and variety), so come and bring your relatives, friends or neighbors for an enjoyable evening with us at Lodge No 172 in Pasadena at 911 E. Shaw Street. Our tables are set up for all of you on the first-come, first-served basis, also "BYOB:' Be with us for your weekend of dancing enjoyment.

At the District V meeting was a guest from far West, Texas the one and only Editor of our Vestnik, Brother Rudy Sefcik, who is a real admirer of the people and by the people. Thanks for your presence and your lovely speech. Come again!

An invitation was extended to him Sunday for our March 21st groundbreaking ceremony at 1 p.m.

Lodge Sets Next Meeting Date

The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 173 Galveston was held March 10 at 7 p.m. at Bayou Vista.

It seemed like none of our members would be able to attend the District V meeting in Houston for March 14.

A moment of silence was held in memory of Sister Bessie Wytovak who passed away March 3.

STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT Saturday, April 17th, starting at 1 p.m., through Sunday, April 18th, after the noon meal, all sessions to be held at the Supreme Lodge Building.

Assistant DYCs, youth leaders and assistants will be allowed meals, mileage, and lodging for those driving longer distances, plus a nominal per diem for the two days. We suggest car pooling for those coming from the same area. Bring rule book and notebook for taking notes. Eat on your own on Saturday, so that things can get underway promptly at 1 p.m.

PS: Also bring tweezers and a hammer, preferably a small tack hammer.

These two items are important.

To those of you desiring overnight lodging, the Holiday Inn in Temple on 1-35 on the west side of Temple has been designated as accommodations headquarters. It will be up to each individual to make his or her own reservation. In addition to lodging, meals will be allowed for those staying over night. In claiming reimbursement, the IRS requires that you submit motel bills because they consider lodging compensation the same as income.

(Sorry, no allowances for alcoholic beverages; the motel staff has been so informed.) Those wishing to make reservations may do so by contacting the Holiday Inn, 802 North General Bruce Drive, telephone 817-778-4411.

If you write, address your letter to the attention of Faye Dillard, and if you call ask for her because the arrangements for the workshop were made with her and she is familiar with all the particulars.

Directions to the Holiday Inn: For all those traveling from the South on 1-35, the next exit after you pass the Adams Avenue Exit is the Nugent Avenue Exit. Take that exit, proceed

to Nugent Avenue for about half a mile and cross over 1-35 to the left and then take the service road on the west side of 1-35 back to Holiday Inn. For those coming into Temple from the north on 1-35, take Exit 303, which is the Nugent Avenue Exit, and go approximately one-half mile to the Holiday Inn. Those coming into Temple on Hwy. 36 from the west or south, and on Hwys. 95 and 53, the above directions should suffice, except that you will probably utilize South 1st and Adams Ave. coming into Temple, the latter being the main east-west artery through town.

Adams runs into 1-35.

Directions to the Home Office: For those of you who have never been to the Home Office, it is located at 520 North Main, which runs north and south through Temple. We are situated across (but not directly across) from the main Post Office and you will see a prominent sign "SPJST Fraternal Life Insurance" on North Main Street and three "lollipop" signs on North 1st Street, however, entrance into our parking lots is only from Main Street. (Central Avenue divides Temple north and south and Main Street divides it east and west.)

There are virtually no one-way streets in Temple. There should be plenty of parking space available in our adjoining lots.

Those of you coming to the retreat from the South on 1-35, take the Adams Avenue Exit and go east about 1 mile to the Municipal Bldg.

(City Hall) and turn left on Main Street and go about 5 blocks to the Home Office Building at the corner of North Main and French. Those of you coming in from the north on 1-35 should take Exit 303 on the north edge of town and then follow the North 3rd Street signs, come approximately one and one-quarter miles to the second red light, which is French Avenue. Make a left on French and go 2 blocks to North Main and make a right into the parking lots of the Supreme Lodge Building.

FUTURE EVENTS SET FOR COTTONWOOD YC Dear Members and Friends: Lodge No. 6 Youth Club held their monthly meeting March 7, 1982, with a pretty fair attendance.

Activities held by the club members during March were: A visit to the West Rest Haven to present a program Wednesday, March 10; their kite-flying contest turned out real good; also fire posters were made, judges for the contest were Brother and Sister Ray Perez (thanks for judging); their Stanley product sales were successful and the club held a contest on the most sales (thanks very much for your efforts).

Birthday celebrants in March were: Kevin Dobecka and Tammy Dobecka. Terry Hykel brought the kite-cake which was real pretty.

Delores Dobecka will bring a cake in April.

The youngsters are very busy making preparations for their programs and projects for April.

Some of the things are: Easter Party planned for April 4, with a program about Easter, an egg hunt and a fried chicken supper. Everyone at the lodge was asked to bring a covered dish and pastry to go with the chicken. This will be appreciated. A bake sale will be held April 9 at the Leroy Bank. Lodge No. 6 will host the District III spring meeting April 25. Our youngsters are selling tickets on some items.

District III Youth Achievement Day will be held June 27 at Lodge No. 84 in Dallas. Some of our youth members are working on their craft and started practicing their talent.
