A CORRECTION: In a recent issue of Vestnik we mentioned that we thought Bro. Pokladnik was the first SPJST member to serve as Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC) president, however, our attention has been called to the fact (by Brother Morris and Pokladnik) that SL Vice-President Joe B. Hejny had served as TFC president in the past when it was held at the Holiday Inn in Temple. We regret the oversight. *** Saturday, March 6 we attended the Officers' Workshop in Temple at the Supreme Lodge Headquarters. We arrived 15 minutes prior to the beginning and your editor took care of some duties with the Vestnik while his wife, Maxine, secretary of Lodge 54 in West, attended the secretaries' and financial secretaries' session. There was a very good turnout of all the officers from various lodges in the state, and all are to be commended for their attentiveness and their eagerness to learn more about the duties of their respective offices.

There is a saying that every day you can learn something new and, of course, that is not a statement idly wasted. The sessions all seemed to be very thoroughly conducted in a business-like manner and then the luncheon served at Seaton Lodge 47 was enjoyed by all, after which, there was a joint session of the entire group and much was discussed and, quite frankly, much was learned by nearly everyone present. Those present seemed to enjoy the sessions and all requested that it would be held in the same manner in 1983. Of course, there is a cost to our Society in conducting these workshops, however, if the workshops help our local lodge officers to become more efficient in their duties as president including the vice-president, secretary, treasurer, financial-secretary and other officers, it would seem that it makes our organization a better — functioning organization. As far as your editor could see, it seemed that everybody gained something from the workshop whoever attended.

We will have to wait for the reaction of the various officers from the lodges who attended and give their opinions at our district spring meetings. *a* Recently your editor read an official publication that non-profit organizations such as ours will have to pay a higher rate of postage to mail non-profit mail through our

United States post office system.

Somehow your editor cannot understand how our Washington "big wheels" feel that these things are valuable to the United States.

President Reagan, when elected, said that he would let or turn over many of these duties of taking care of the needy, elderly, who really need help to be taken care of by fraternals, and various other organizations, which seemed rather sensible.

But, lo and behold, now we have all types of "junk" mail coming through the mail to us from corporations who are only advertising to a great extent much of the junk and our non-profit organizations have to pay a little more, somehow.

This strikes a rather "sour" note when you stop and think about it and maybe it should be corrected. *** March 7th is remembered by millions of people throughout the world as the day when one of the most outstanding statesmen of Europe was born. This is neither an overstatement nor an outburst of vainglorious chauvinism.

This month marks the 132nd anniversary of the birth of Thomas Garrigue Masaryk, the father of the Czechoslovak Republic and one of the truly great statesmen of our time.

Masaryk was one of a long line of illustrious Czechs who have contributed a great deal to European history and to the development of our own country as well. He holds an especially high place in the affections of the Czechoslovak people because it was his broad humanitarian views, full understanding of international problems, and clear vision that won independence for the Czechoslovak people after the close of World War I. Indeed his was truly a unique career. He had already lived a full life as an educator here in America when he was called to the task of organizing the Czech State because of his outstanding abilities as a statesman, philosopher, teacher, and administrator. His unswerving devotion to the cause of the Czech people and his great patriotic leadership made him the natural choice for the first President of the newlycreated Republic. Despite his humble origin as the son of a coachman, his brilliant intellect and strength of character made him the outstanding statesman of central Europe by the end of the First World War. During the seventeen years in which he served as chief of state for the Czechoslovak Republic, he led his country to the high position of the most prosperous and most progressive democratic state in Central Europe. He was 85 years of age when he voluntarily relinquished office to his colleague and close friend, Eduard Benes.

The reason why we honor Thomas G. Masaryk because, in his own person, he symbolized values of the highest and most sacred meaning to both Americans and Czechoslovaks.

It is well that we pay tribute to him today as an indication to the entire world, and to those forces of aggression which threaten that world, that the cause of freedom can never be permanently lost while such great men as he continue to rise to the demands of these critical times.

From the President's Office Workshops An Overwhelming Success

A grand total of 263 had notified the president's office that they were going to attend. That figure included 43 visitors, the 5 Supreme Lodge officers, 7 directors, and about a dozen staff-support people. A total of 245 were fed at the complimentary noon meal on that Saturday.

About half a dozen notified the Supreme Lodge at the last minute that they would not be attending due to extenuating circumstances.

Six officers sent in notices of attendance that arrived Monday morning after the workshops. A few left the workshops after the sessions at the Home Office and apparently did not attend sessions at Seaton Star Hall.

Nevertheless, the attendance was the largest ever. As was expected, this was the first time that many had ever been at the Home Office and also the first time that many had attended any of the workshops. We were especially pleased to see a number of officers from lodges that had never been represented in previous workshops.

Favorable comments were heard about the museum area. The catered noon meal was excellent and the facilities at Star Hall very accommodating and pleasant. The officers and members of Lodge 47 are to be commended for their willingness to host the serving of the noon meal and the afternoon sessions.

Minnesota, as General Agent for the Austin area, is the 1982 president and presiding officer of the TFC. Fraternal Benefit Societies with State Headquarters in Temple include the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) located on North Main in Temple.

SPJST District III Director Sid Pokladnik of Dallas serves on the TFC Board of Directors and President Nick A. Morris serves in an advisory /consulting capacity to the Board and has also agreed to serve as Publicity Chairman for this year's Texas Fraternal Congress. Gene McBride, State Field Manager for the SPJST, will serve as president of the Youth Section for 1982, and Jann Thomas, SPJST State Youth Director, serves as the secretarytreasurer of the Youth Section. The 1983 Texas Fraternal Congress will be chaired by Pokladnik and will be held in Temple.

The late Vice President Bro. Joe B. Hejny had previously served as president of the Texas Fraternal Congress when it was held at the Holiday Inn in Temple. That was in about 1969 or 1970.

Dear Readers: The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 6 was called to order at 3 p.m. by President Robert Dobecka.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Delores Dobecka and Kevin Dobecka. Delores Dobecka then recited the SPJST Pledge.

Roll call of officers was called by Sister Barbara Hykel with all officers present.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Barbara Hykel. They were approved as read.

Correspondence was also read by Secretary Barbara Hykel, which included a "Thank-you" card from Brother Alvin Schuetz.

All other reports were approved as read.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz gave the Youth Club report. The club will be going to the Rest Home March 10, 1982. The youth club donated gifts and cigarette packs to different charities. The club will be starting on their Easter projects soon. They will be making Bunny rabbits and they will also start practicing the Easter program. The youth will be selling tickets for the Easter party. In the sale there will be a "Home Interior" wagon basket, Easter basket and an Easter rabbit, along with other items donated. The youth will have their kite contest today. Fire prevention posters were made to be judged at this meeting.

The youth will have a bake sale April 9, 1982 at the Leroy Bank.

The Board of Trustees' report was given by Brother Aubrey Uptmor.

The District III meeting will be April 25, 1982 including a chicken dinner. The lodge will purchase a new deep fryer. Some of the members worked on the hall February 27, 1982. The Sale Ticket Committee, for the picnic, was appointed. They are Brother and Sister George Straten, and Brother and Sister Bobby Dobecka. The trustees voted to charge a cleanup fee. This will begin with all new rentals; also the lodge bought a $25 ad for the Sokol Southern District Slet.

Several of the officers attended the Officers' Workshop in Temple March 6, 1982 which everyone enjoyed.

President Robert Dobecka thanked the members who worked on the hall in February.

Brother Robert Dobecka and Sister Willie Mae Schuetz were approved as sales representatives for our lodge. Congratulations to both of them!

The members will start working on the hall in about two weeks.

Anyone interested in helping will be greatly appreciated.

The $10 progressive door prize was won by Charlene Svacek (not present); $4 progressive prize, Edward Havel (not present), and the

$2 door prize was won by Sister Rose Uptmor.

The youth club meeting will be Friday, April 2 after the Board of Trustees' meeting. The Board of Trustees will meet Friday, April 2, at 8 p.m.

The next monthly meeting will be April 4, 1982 at 3 p.m. with our Easter program, Easter egg hunt and supper following the meeting. A fried chicken supper will be served at the Easter party. Each member is asked to bring a covered dish to go with the chicken. Hope to see everyone at the meeting and party.

Home Lodge Plans Egg Hunt For Their Youngsters Sweet

Lodge No. 63 Sweet Home will hold its meeting and social March 21 at Firemen's Hall beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Reports will be made and final plans for the District VI meeting will be made, also, door prizes will be drawn and someone with a birthday in January, February or March will win a cake baked by Denise Raz. An Easter egg hunt for the children will follow the meeting.

Entertainment will be furnished by the Entertainment Committee.

Members are asked to bring something for lunch. Drinks will be furnished by the lodge.

Remember this date and bring the little ones for the egg hunt!

Campo Lodge Makes $100 Charity Donation El

The SPJST Lodge No. 50 of El Campo held their quarterly meeting March 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion Auxiliary.

President Sister Rita Vanek called the meeting to order.

Secretary Sister Anna Bartos read the minutes. They were approved as read.

Treasurer Sister Leona Macha gave the treasurer's report. It was approved for filing.

We made a $100 donation to the St. Philip's Catholic Endowment Fund as our charity act.

A sausage supper was served to all attending, with the lodge furnishing the meal.

Lovelady Lodge Makes Monetary Donation To Its Youth

When the officers and members arrived Monday night at Lodge 74 for its regular monthly meeting, they were happy to see work had begun on its parking area; if the weather permits, the first project should be completed soon.

The regular monthly meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President James Wilcox.

Roll call was answered by all officers, except our youth leader, Linda Michka, who was sick.

All trustees were present, except Ben Erwin.

The minutes and correspondence were read by Recording Secretary Creola Wilcox.

Treasurer's report was given by Mary McInnis.

The financial secretary's report was given by Cheryl Melson.

In the absence of our Youth Leader Linda Michka, her husband, Jerry Michka, gave the Youth Club report.

The mother lodge donated $256.56 to the Youth Club for square dance costumes. We are always happy to do things for our young people.

A committee was appointed to plan our July 4th activities. They are: Creola Wilcox, Linda Michka, Fay Fowler, Dorothy Smith, Mary McInnis and Cheryl Melson; as soon as definite plans are made, I will report them to the members. We also welcome any volunteers who would like to help make plans for this event.

The members voted to rent a safe deposit box in the name of our lodge to keep deeds and important papers in.

Cheryl Melson, our financial secretary, who is expecting a new arrival soon, was given a high chair from the members of our lodge. She expressed her thanks and appreciation to everyone.

The meeting was adjourned and members enjoyed visiting with each other during a social hour, with refreshments, compliments of the house.

Lodge No. 88, March 8th, 1982 Meeting Houston

The meeting was called to order

by President Pflughaupt at 7:37 p.m.

Bobby Allbritton presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which, the members stood in silence and tribute to deceased members Arthur Drawe, Aileen Isaacson, Jerome Harry Malek and John Repka.

With all officers present, Secretary Clara Broz read the minutes of the February meeting, which were approved as read. After reading a list of 46 applications for insurance and 4 transfers, moved that they be accepted as read, seconded and carried and then read the correspondence.

All insurance and financial reports were read and approved.

The Choral Club and Concert Orchestra reported that they would perform at the District V meeting 314-82, Main Street Festival, and the Czech Festival in Rosenberg 5-19-82.

Sister Helen Hegwood of the Dramatic Club reported Brother Karel was casting a Czech play to be performed in May and English play would be performed sometimes in September.

Board Chairman Royal Warnasch reported the Board of Trustees making many repairs, cleaning and painting in the lodge building and fixtures and announced the Lodge Big Clean-Up Day to be on 5-1-82.

Brother Souchek. Czech instructor, reported Czech classes were now in progress with 12 to 14 students enrolled and it was not too late to sign up for this course.

Brother Lynn Pflughaupt thanked the lodge and the Board of Trustees for the $300 donation towards the close-up program trip to Washington and told of some of the places and things he observed.

District V President Tillie Helmcamp reminded the membership of the District V meeting at Lodge No. 142, Sunday, March 14th.

District V Youth Counselor Joyce Mynar announced the District V training class at Lodge No. 88 on 322-82 for anyone who was interested in the Youth Program with guest, Jann Thomas of the Supreme Lodge.

Members reported sick were David Miculka, Walla Manning and Johnny Mrosko.

Reporter on Benevolence, Mary Kosut, reported 48 hours and $65 in expense as charity work and 919 hours volunteer work done, at the lodge by members. She added that a visit at the home of a sick person can be credited if some kind of service is performed.

Everyone enjoyed it and next month's meeting we will have fried chicken; bring side dishes accordingly. Visitors at the meeting were Marie Kuehn, Justine Janak and, as usual, Sister Albina Hilsher.

Chairman of the Board Royal Warnesch called the attention of the members to Cleanup Day' May 1. Get ready with your elbow grease so the necessary work will be done. Let's have a nice turnout! Board member A. J. Stayton announced Splash Day for May 7, but the pool will be open before that date. Board member Willie Wehring, in charge of the Blue Room, announced a Blue Room Party will be held April 25; $10 per person will cover refreshments, dinner and dance. Sister Evelyn Vornsand, chairwoman of the Choral Club, announced several guest appearances that will be made by the Choral Club this year; also a Czech play is scheduled for May by Director Milo Karel and English play by Director Tim Kostom in September.

Sister Mary Kosut, the Sunshine Sister of the Birthday Club and the reporter on Benevolence for the lodge, is really on the ball keeping these records; it is amazing how many hours members spend in voluntary work of which she keeps a record. Mary also keeps up with ailing members and cheers them up with a get-well card from the Birthday Club. Her husband, Johnnie Kosut, at the social night, was surprised by his friends surrounding his table at half-time with a birthday cake for his birthday which was February 26. Happy Birthday!

We can't do without wedding anniversaries and this time three of our devoted couples announced their wedding anniversaries: Jimmie and Bernice Wahlberg, 30 years and they furnished the refreshments after the meeting, thank you; A.J. and Marie Stayton married 38 years; and Milert and Evelyn Entrich, 40 years. To all these nice people, Happy Anniversary!

News From Lodge Pasadena No. 172 Dear Members, Leaders of all Lodges, Editor, Supreme Lodge Officers, Vestnik Readers and Friends: A friendly hello to all of you from Lodge No. 172 as a dearly-beloved winter (to many who like snow, Santa Claus and snowmen) is slowly fading away.

Thanks to whomever we know who are not accustomed to snow as much as are those in north Texas.

Those here as job seekers from so many northern and eastern states will not be so happy with our humid weather as we are having to take; many of them really will be disappointed by being here all year round and hardly ever may see snow or even snow flurries in some few years apart. They also may not have a chance to ski or shovel snow off their driveways, surely, those who don't like snow in some of the wintertime, it's really not a holiday season at Christmastime at least in our December and January months.

We, Texas people, would only like it in a 2-month period and then go have some fun.

Springtime is back with us for us to see the beautiful flowering shrubs, roses and watch bees picking honey from the roses and honeysuckle vines and the honey is so sweet (best in many cookies and cakes, even our Czech kolache.)

Sometimes it isn't funny when you get stung by a real mean bunch of bees not wanting anyone to rob their honey. I'm sure many of you have had those experiences and that is quite natural.

The weather here during the week was a bit unsettled but many of you may know that many of us had lots of overtime hours during a 5-day work week and how beautiful it is today (Sunday) and may be for a couple of days more to recuperate from some of our sickness or whatever may be ailing you, as my wife, Esther, and I have experienced last week. We've talked over the telephone to some and they have experienced the same thing, We, here at Lodge 172, wish each and everyone of you the best of health so that all of us can be more with each other and to participate in activities.

I am involved in 6 different fraternal organizations. I, surely, will participate at 4th degree services at K of C, Bellaire, Tx. Our dance Saturday night, March 6 was a very good success. Thanks to those many people from various places who attended; come again, we, love you all and we appreciate your patronage. Thanks also to Donnie Wavra and the Hi-Liters who were excellent with their music performance. Many of you have the best night, yet, so remember, they play ballroom, and variety music.

Thanks, again Donnie and your fine young men! There were tickets drawn during intermission and there were a few lucky ones. The Seaton Choral Club met Tuesday night at Seaton Star Hall to sing songs, to have fellowship, and fun. The club led by Mrs. Annie Jakubec, and accompanied by Henry Janacek on the accordion, practiced songs they planned to sing for the Senior Citizens Program March 14 at the KC Hall in Temple.

The following members were present: Emily Stuteville, Ruby Bolton, Mary Holik, Lillian Kosarek, Emily Dohnalik, Georgia Sodek, Eleanora Spanhel, Agnes Shiller, Albina Mikeska,- Dorothy Pechal, Dorothy Morris, Lillian Mikulec, Della Psencik, Helen Janacek, Anne Krcha, Martha Klusacek, Viola Cervenka, Jerry Pechal, Frank Spanhel, Otto Hanus, Frank Mikulec; and, of course, Annie Jakubec and Henry Janacek. One visitor, Mrs. Annie Mikulastik, was present. Why not join our club?

Following the singing, a business meeting was held to elect officers for the coming year. Dorothy Morris was re-elected president; Helen Janacek, vice-president; Lillian Kosarek, re-elected secretarytreasurer; Lillian Mikulec, assistant secretar y -treasurer; Lillian Kosarek, Martha Klusacek were reelected historian and assistant and Thelma Bartosh was elected reporter.

Won't you come join us? We meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. We are looking forward to a full season of singing, for ourselves and others and also some picnics and parties. Hope you will join us.

Mutual Fire Insurance Chapter No. 9, Ft. Worth To Meet

Dear Members: Today it feels like spring may not be far away but who knows what tomorrow may bring.

On the way to the SPJST Workshop yesterday in Temple, there had been a light snow fall in several places. It looked very pretty in the plowed fields, on the trees and roofs of houses.

This is a reminder that the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Chapter No. 9 will have the first meeting of this year on Sunday, March 21 at the Hermann Sons Hall, 1200 W. Fuller. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m.

The officers will give their reports of the business which has been transacted since the last meeting.

The ladies are asked to please bring pastries to go with the meal which is provided by the local chapter.

We extend our sympathy to the family of Sister Frances Tesar who passed away Friday, March 5. There will be a rosary for her tonight and the funeral will be tomorrow, March' 8 at 11 a.m. at All Saint's Catholic Church.

There has been a lot of flu and viruses of sorts going around so I hope that those of you who have been sick are feeling much better now.

I hope all of you can attend the meeting.

We finally had our meeting on March 4. It was a beautiful day with 39 members and 9 guests present.

President Anne Zvolanek called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. After the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, we observed a few moments of silence in memory of Sister Anna Noska, who passed away last month.

Sincere sympathy is expressed to Sisters Rose and Millie Noska and their families, also to Sister Bessie Kalich and family, whose brother, Joe Ruzicka, passed away recently.

Minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer gave a good report.

Christmas greetings and New Year's wishes were received and read from Sisters Rose Novak from Ogden, _Utah, Berta Paryzkova from Czechoslovakia, and Irene Halouzka from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"Thank-you" note was read from KJT Society No. 35, Ennis, Tx. for the check sent them for their building fund. Libbie and Alvin Elsik sent a note thanking the Circle for the concern and thoughtfulness shown them during their recent sorrow. A note was received from Cecelia Moorehead, who was a guest at our Christmas party, thanking the Circle for a wonderful time she had at our party. Mrs. Mary Janecka, who was "Queen for a Day" at the Czech Day at the Fair last October, thanked the Circle for the pictures sent her.

Sunshine chairman sent 15 cards in December, 6 in January, and 5 in February. On behalf of the Circle, Sister Zdenka took a decoratedliving Christmas tree to Sister Carrie Kebrle, who is in the nursing home. Liddie Pavelka took a poinsettia plant to Sister Mary Tullis to the nursing home. Millie Bartek took a poinsettia plant to Sister Leona Polansky to the nursing home. Thanks to Millie for donating the plant. Rose Noska thanked the Circle for the monetary gift given in memory of Sister Anna Noska, also for the gift taken to A. Noska when she was in the hospital.

At the family's request, the memorial gift is to remain in the Circle's treasury.

Those on the sick list are Helen Vrla, Sr., Mary Stransky, Mary Dusek, Stazie Trojacek, who is a sister of Mary Kubacak, and little Michael Wychopen, 4-year old granddaughter of Vallie Tupy, who broke her leg. All these are wished a speedy recovery.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to sisters who had a birthday either in January, February, or March. Since there were so many who had a birthday, I won't name them. Hope this is alright with all of you.

A Nominating Committee was selected. Those on the committee are: Mary Sebestik, chairman, Ella Bartos, and Dorothy Reznik. They will give us a report next month.

New officers of the Czech Culture Society are: President - Stanley Patak, Vice-President - George Reznik, Secretary - Mary Ann Srubar, and Treasurer - Mildred Chervenka. Delegates representing the Dallas Circle of Czech Women are Dorothy Reznik, Anne Zvolanek, Henrietta Schindler, and Bessie Reames. Czech Day at the Fair will be October 17. The next meeting of the Czech Culture Society will be April 4.

Our guests were Anna Hofman from Czechoslovakia, Elaine Kearns from Long Island, New York, Susan Tye and daughter Natasha Marie, little Annie Kutlik, Jerry Urban, George Skotak, Dick Ground, Bob Zvolanek, Gilbert Kalich, and Stanley Marhula from Minneapolis, Minnesota. We are always happy to have visitors.

Donations received in memory of Sister Anna Noska from Liddie and Jim Pavelka, Marie Fitz, Rose Kopecek, Libby Slovak, Bessie Reames, Zdenka Skotak, and Anne Zvolanek. Rose Bednar donated birthday cards and Zdenka Skotak brought several pieces of material for sisters to take. Sisters usually give a donation to the Circle for the material they take. Anna Hofman, our guest from Czechoslovakia, brought two lovely scarves from Prague for door prizes. Martha Dujka and Alice Roberts were the lucky winners. Thank you, everyone, for your donations.

Congratulations: to Dorothy and George Reznik upon becoming grandparents of Natasha Marie Tye. She was the first baby born at Baylor University Medical Center on New Year's Day, and to Anne Skrabanek upon becoming a grandmother, again. Her son, Billy and wife had a daughter, born December 16; her name is Brittany Anne.

Zdenka and George Skotak became great-grandparents of Avriell Lavon Riggby. Proud parents are Sherri and Larry Riggby. Grandparents are Jerline and Harold Champion.

Brenda Slovak, granddaughter of Libby and Stanley Slovak, is a Peace.

Officer at the North Lake College in Irving, Texas. She hopes to become a detective, someday. Georgia Johnson, daughter of Dorothy and George Reznik, has extended her nursing duties in oncology (pertains to tumor and cancer) after attending a Seminar in San Antonio. Dorothy Reznik, like some of the rest of us, just can't say "no". She "inherited" 14 Cub Scouts. She will be their Den Mother. Good luck, Dorothy! Adell and Earl Grinnell of Virginia, came to be with her mother, Anna Noska, before she passed away. They visited with relatives while here.

Wesley Tupy, husband of Sister Vallie Tupy, won a $50.00 gift certificate from Tom Thumb Grocery Store. How nice!

A big "thanks" to each one who helped before the meeting, took care

of the food as it was brought in, and for cleaning up after the meeting.

The covered-dish luncheon was a big success. There was plenty of food and everyone seemed to like the idea. We will do it, again, later in the year.

Next month we will have regular hostesses who will prepare the meal.

Letter to the Editor A Human Interest Educational Story Dear Editor: Perhaps you will find space to print the following or have a suggestion regarding short articles of this type.

In passing the half century mark in age, I want to expose my feelings regarding the smoking habit. It has become a vice since the ugly weed has made its way into some persons' lives. With the uncounted number of phrases directed at convincing smokers not to smoke, no equal amount of time is given to: "Don't start smoking!"

I can recall the time I started smoking when my Dad didn't exactly regard it as manly but, more importantly, my Mom asked if it was really necessary.

I've never developed a pastime of smoking cigars; I thought it may satisfy my urge to smoke. You don't inhale (so they tell me) the smoke, only swallow when there is no spitoon as a result of chewing the end. I asked my wife: "Honey, did you buy me some cigars?" "No," was the answer and "I am not going to and No, cigars are nasty and, No, they stink" — "OK, OK" I said, "maybe next time." Really I am about to have a nicotine breakdown at that statement at that time!

I'm going to reveal a secret, (I think). It is a lesson that did not stay with me. I was still a small bean-pod compared to my current six-foot height when my twin brother joined me in overcoming a temptation that neither of us could resist any longer.

It began by sneaking a quarter-inch of my Dad's favorite tobacco. Now, I know I've revealed my age as being somewhere past 39 and holding but some of you may remember a dry tobacco, about a cigar thickness and tapered on end or comparable in size to a twisted doughnut that tastes good with coffee. This brand of tobacco was named, "Mickey Twist."

Along with each twist came a small metal clover-leaf that we used to fight over.

We climbed our best backyard tree, trying not to disturb the chickens that were cooling under it because it was hotter than I care to remember. I put the biggest piece of the quarter-inch in my mouth since I was bigger than my twin brother.

We began chewing as if we had good sense. I've watched my Dad chew and smoke this brand of tobacco time and time again, even on the hottest days while, for example, picking cotton and sweat rolling off

him at a fast drip that cooled the ants when it fell to the ground.

Suddenly, I thought I felt a tremor. I looked up and felt as if I had been rolling down a cloud. The tremor came and went as I thought of exercising my right to the tree without realizing what was happening. Was my Dad shaking the tree? My gosh, don't get caught or his razor strap will leave its print on our 'you-know-what.' Down from the tree I thought and hurry. The ground came fast because I landed on my nose without realizing which end of me was up. I ran to the back porch on our house and misjudged the doorhandle and again, you guessed it, landed on my back.

What nut would ever want to smoke that tobacco! much less chew It? I quit smoking in 1978 and have since put my money into a hobby restoring a 1929 Model "A" Ford Sedan. What a joy!

To those of you desiring overnight lodging, the Holiday Inn in Temple on 1-35 on the west side of Temple has been designated as accommodations headquarters. It will be up to each individual to make his or her own reservation. In addition to lodging, meals will be allowed for those staying overnight. In claiming reimbursement, the IRS requires that you submit motel bills because they consider lodging compensation the same as income. (Sorry, no allowances for alcoholic beverages; the motel staff has been so informed.) Those wishing to make reservations may do so by contacting the Holiday Inn, 802 North General Bruce Drive, telephone 817-778-4411. If you write, address your letter to the attention of Faye Dillard, and if you call ask for her because the arrangements for the workshop were made with her and she is familiar with all the particulars.

Directions to the Holiday Inn: For all those traveling from the South on 1-35, the next exit after you pass the Adams Avenue Exit is-the Nugent Avenue Exit. Take that exit, proceed to Nugent Avenue for about half a mile and cross over 1-35 to the left and then take the service road on the west side of 1-35 back to Holiday Inn. For those coming into Temple from the north on 1-35, take Exit 303, which is the Nugent Avenue Exit, and go approximately one-half mile to the Holiday Inn. Those coming into Temple on Hwy. 36 from the west or south, and on Hwys. 95 and 53, the above directions should suffice, except that you will probably utilize South 1st and Adams Ave. coming into Temple, the latter being the main east-west artery through town.

Adams runs into 1-35.

Directions to the Home Office: For those of you who have never been to the Home Office, it is located at 520 North Main, which runs north and south through Temple. We are situated across (but not directly across) from the main Post Office

and you will see a prominent sign "SPJST Fraternal Life Insurance" on North Main Street and three "lollipop" signs on North 1st Street, however, entrance into our parking lots is only from Main Street.

(Central Avenue divides Temple north and south and Main Street divides it east and west.) There are virtually no one-way streets in Temple. There should be plenty of parking space available in our adjoining lots.

Those of you coming to the retreat from the South on 1-35, take the Adams Avenue Exit and go east about 1 mile to the Municipal Bldg.

(City Hall) and turn left on Main Street and go about 5 blocks to the Home Office Building at the corner of North Main and French. Those of you coming in from the north on 1-35 should take Exit 303 on the north edge of town and then follow the North 3rd Street signs, come approximately one and one-quarter miles to the second red light, which is French Avenue. Make a left on French and go 2 blocks to North Main and make a right into the parking lots of the Supreme Lodge Building.

From the Youth Members ACTIVITIES SET FOR LODGE NO.6 YC Dear Readers, The Cottonwood Youth Club held its meeting Sunday, March 7. President Theresa Dobecka called the meeting to order. Pledge to the United States Flag was recited by all members.

Our next meeting will be held Friday, April 2 after the Board of Trustees meeting instead of Sunday, April 4. We will hold our Easter program, egg hunt, and a supper for the membership on that Sunday.

TAITON LODGE NO.30 YC PLANS PROJECT The Talton Youth Club held their first meeting of March Sunday, March 7, at 2:30 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center.

We had 21 members present, also seven mothers and one guest were present.

Our thanks to everyone for making our kolache/sandwich sale at the Vrazel Dance which was a good success. Our youth club netted $83, and we really have to thank our moms for donating everything and helping us so much. Thanks, mom, without you we couldn't have done it.

We had a St. Patrick's Day contest, and the winners were in the following age groups (6-9): 1st Marcy Dorotik, 2nd Slate Srubar, 3rd Stephanie Roye. In (10-12): 1st Michelle Srubar, 2nd Jeannie Dorotik, 3rd Jana Dornak. In (13-17): 1st Karen Kahanek, 2nd Yvonne Kresta, 3rd Vicki Dorotik.

There were also St. Patrick poems read by: Karen Kahanek, Vicki Dorotik, Marjorie Treumer, Marcy Dorotik, Jeannie Dorotik, Michelle Srubar.

Vicki Dorotik had a birthday in March. All of us sang "Happy Birthday" to her and wished her many more.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge No. 30 SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting March 7, at 2:30 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center, President Yvonne Kresta brought the meeting to order, Kristi Korenek led the Pledge and Timmy Kresta led the prayer.

In the contest everyone was asked to draw a picture about St. Patrick's Day. Winners were in these groups (6-9): 1st Marcy Dorotik, 2nd Slate Srubar, 3rd Stephanie Roye. In (1012): 1st Michelle Srubar, 2nd Jean Dorotik, 3rd Jana Dornak. In (13-17): 1st Karen Kahanek, 2nd Yvonne Kresta, 3rd Vicki Dorotik.

Door prize winners were Vicki Dorotik, Jana Dornak, Karen Kahanek and Timmy Kresta.

The birthday for this month was for Vicki Dorotik.

Twenty-seven youth members enjoyed a Valentine's Day Skating Party at Skate World in Austin in February.

Our Youth Club has been working hard in preparation for the District II meeting in Elgin on March 21st.

All Lodge 187 Youth Club members are encouraged to volunteer to work in the kitchen on Sundays. A portion of the proceeds go to our Youth Club.

Our next Youth Club meeting will be during the General Membership meeting on March 28th at 4 p.m.

Our Youth Club Leader for 1982 is Nina Rosenbusch. She has a lot of good ideas and we appreciate her involvement. Thank you, Mrs. Rosenbusch.

Dear Readers, We are busy making crafts at our Friday socials. We made paper mache Easter eggs that need to be painted. We will make decorated items to give to the Rest Home residents for Easter. Easter bunnies will be made out of Purex bottles for each family of the Youth Club.

FEATURES EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 35, Elk, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of WOODROW (WOODY) ADAMEK,

age 62, of 4704 Glenwood, Waco, who died Sunday, February 28, 1982, in a local hospital.

Brother Adamek was born 12 March 1919, in Elk. He attended Elk School. He married Dorothy Freeman in 1945, and attended the Presbyterian Church. He owned a grocery store in Northcrest and retired in 1979.

Brother Adamek was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 35 in Elk and a World War II veteran.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkirson-Hatch Chapel, with Dr. W. D. Lackey officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Woodrow (Dorothy) Adamek; one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Jean Cunningham of South Carolina; one son, Rodney W. Adamek of 4324 Wildwood Circle; five sisters, Mrs. Clara Thun of Elk, Mrs. Adolf Beralek of Mart, Mrs. Henrietta Pavelka and Mrs. Vlasta Pavelka of West; Mrs. Willie Mae Pavelka of Terrell; one brother, Calvin Adamek of Mart; and one grandson.

Pallbearers were Don Young, Richard Adamek, Jerry Vicha, Dero Hurst, Billy Thun, Charlie Pavelka, Larry Beralek and James Edward Pavelka.

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST No. 47 Seaton, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister GINGER KLUSACEK, age 37, who passed away Thursday, February 19, 1982 in a Temple hospital after a lengthy illness.

Ginger was born in Waco but had lived in Temple most of her life. She was married to Alfred L. Klusacek July 20, 1968. She was a secretary at American Desk Co. in Temple for a number of years but had been staying home the past 4 years being a full time housewife and mother.

Ginger was also secretary of our local Lodge No. 47 for 2 years and she and Alfred L. were bar chairpersons for several months.

Services were held at HarperTalasek Funeral Home at 3 p.m.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry E. Sijansky and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman K. Carter, all of Corpus Christi.

Miss Donna Weirich of Corpus Christi was maid of honor and Kevin Layton of Corpus Christi was best man.

Karel Vacek se narodil 21. btezna noci po praiskych ulicfch, ptemySlel a 1902 v Liberci. Zahy se vSak s rodiei hledal melodie i slova. Sedm roku odstehoval do Prahy. Oba rodiee meli jsem zpival dvakrat tydne v rozhlase, k hudbe velice pekny vztah, po praci a tak jsem se pti skladanf snaZil, aby chodili zpivat do peveckych sborft a pfsnieky byly zpevne a aby je mohl tatinek, ktery se vyueil a pracoval zpivat nejen zpevak, ale s nfm i jako truhldf, hrdval na housle, fletnu i posluchaei."

To se Karlu Vackovi mnohokrdt v basu v amaterskych orchestrech. A tak zcela ptirozene na muzikantskou pine mite zdatilo. A nejen u pfsnieek, ktere sum jmenoval, ale i u tady drahu brzy vstoupil i Karel Vacek.

Mohl jsem si rozhlasu i televize.

Tri desitky dokonce dovolit takovou vec: v pondelf jsem shbil, 2e pujdu v sobotu svetovych vydavatelstvf uvadeji ye hrat na taneenf zabavu na basu, ani2 svych katalozfch jrneno skladatele bych nekdy zkusil na ten nastroj hrat. Karla Vacka.

Za vSechny tyto pfsniaky, ktere se Stadilo par dnfr — a v sobotu jsem hral. Slo to. Pf-estoie jsem dostal natrvabo zapsaly do vedomf solidni zaklady jen ye hie na housle a posluchaeu, se jejich autorovi v roce klarinet, hral jsem — nikoliv jako 1981 dostalo potty nejvySSf. Byl amater, ale jako hudebnik z povoldni jmenovan narodnim umelcem.

Slavny kapelnik 2i2ka, vymenkat z DrahoteSic, zemtel 15. dubna 1939 v 88 letech, a na nahrobek na Sevetinskem hibitove mu napsali: "Zde le21 eesky muzikant, jen hraval bohu a lidem . . ." That was the day for gaiety. After six weeks of Lent, the time of sacrifice, came Easter Day (Hod Boil. Velikonoenf), as a day of rejoicing because of Christ's Resurrection, but that still was a day full of deep religious meaning — a solemn day. Adding of another holiday on Monday gave opportunity for more wordly signs of joy. The boys, from toddlers to young unmarried men, were pursuing girls with gaily decorated whips made of young willow branches. The girls could avoid a "whipping" only by offering the fellows fancily-painted Easter eggs. Some were fresh eggs while the more elaborately painted ones were only shells. They were fine examples of folk art. In the Eastern part of the country, the customs called also for practical jokes like pouring of cold water over an unsuspecting victim, etc. It was not unusual to have a dance on Monday just to give an outlet to the vivacity of the people pinned up during Lent.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the Birthday. In this country, ones Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia, it is put on the same level as the Birthday. On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Vaclav), or St. Anna it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him.

Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josefska, Vacla yska, or Annenska, zabava. The word "zabava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance. As you can see, the above English translation of "mnoho Stestf, zdravf a spokojenosti" is not a literal one. Learn the above phrases and use them in greeting those of your friends who know Czech. They will appreciate it.

43rd lesson. Possessive adjectives.

1. Possessive adjectives are formed from masculine nouns by means of suffixes -fiv, -ova, -ovo, and from feminine nouns by means of suffixes -in, -ina, -ino.

Notes: 1. The meaning of a possessive adjective is that of English Peter's, sister's.

2. We cannot form possessive adjectives from neuter nouns. The possessor must be a person, rarely an animal, never a thing.

The possessor must be a definite,

single person denoted by a single noun, otherwise we must use the genitive. E.g. Smetanovo divadlo v Praze or Divadlo Bedticha Smetany v Praze, ptftelriv syn or syn meho dobreho ptftele, bratrriv klobouk meaning my brother's hat.

3. All hard consonants preceding the suffix -in (-ina, -ino) soften: babieka — babieein, Olga — Oliin, sestra — sestfin, etc.

4. Nouns ending in -SI, -a, -e, -1 (pan NovY, mrij znamY, prrivodef, krejef, Jitf, cestujfcf, vratny and all feminine surnames like pant Novakova, Vavrova, Jiraskova) cannot form possessive form and are treated like normal adjectives.

5. Possessive adjectives are also used in the names of places, streets, squares, institutions. E.g. Karlriv most, Karlova univerzita, Karlovo namestf, Karlovy Vary.

Item of Interest Penn State Slavic Folk Festival The Fourth Annual Penn State Slavic Folk Festival sponsored by the Department of Slavic Languages will be held in the Robeson Cultural Center on the Penn State Campus at University Park, PA from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. April 23 and from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. April 24.

The festival will feature displays on Slavic folk arts and artifacts.

Ukrainian and Czech Easter egg painting and icon painting will be demonstrated.

Choral and dance groups will be featured as well as individual vocalists and instrumentalists. The Czechoslovakian-Moravian Club dancers will be featured at 11:00 a.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

A band will play for dancing Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.

Slide shows and an ethnic snack bar will be featured.

Lorraine Kapitanoff will coordinate the festival assisted by Thomas F. Magner, William Schmalstieg, Joseph Paternost, Linda Ivanits, James Gebhard, and Sigmund Birkenmayer.
