V Sales Representatives Honored District

Director Louis Hanus was the host of the Annual Sales Representative Appreciation Social, held at Lodge 88 Houston on Sunday, February 21st.

A hospitality hour started at noon with a beautifully decorated table of hors d'oeuvres and drinks. At one o'clock a delicious bar-b-que beef dinner with all the trimmings was served. Approximately seventy-five guests were in attendance.

Appropriate remarks honoring the producers were made by Vice President Gebala with special recognition for the top three pr lucers Ti strict V: Della .a.1,-e 88, Sidon Tumis, Lodge 142; and John thischer, Lodge 88.

Special Reminder to Distric II Members A

The District II officers met at the Holland SPJST Hall February 8 at 7:30 p.m. to finalize plans for the District II spring meeting to be held March 21 at Elgin Lodge No. 18.

Registration will begin at 1 p.m. and business meeting to begin at 2 p.m. There will be a short break at 3:15 p.m. A youth program will follow and election and installation of District II officers.

Elgin Lodge No. 18 will serve a delicious meal.

The regular Sunday evening dance of Lodge No 18 will follow the meeting. Jerry Haisler and The Melody Five will provide the music.

District II officers extend a special invitation to all officers and members to attend this meeting.

Eanis SPJST and So7,:oi I-T"' d Mortgage Burning and Receive Annual Contribution Our members, particularly our delegates to the last convention, will recall that a decision was made to donate $1,250 per year to the Southern District of the American Sokol Organization. Since the leadership of the Southern District recently met in Ennis (in SPJST District III), the Supreme Lodge gave the check to :District III Director Sid Pokladnik for delivery and transmittal to the Southern District officers. Bro. Pokladnik did so at the Sokol Hall in Ennis on Saturday, February 14th, which was also the occasion of mortgage-burning ceremonies for the Sokol unit in Ennis and SPJST Lodge 135, which use joint facilities. On that occasion, Bro. Pokladnik delivered the following brief remarks: "Brother President Ben Maca of the Southern District, American Sokol Organization, Sisters and Brothers of Sokol, Officers and Members of SPJST Lodge 135, and Friends: I am proud and happy to be here today and loin with you in the burning of your mortgage. On behalf of myself and my wife, Justine, we thank you for your invitation to be here today and we thank you for your fine hospitality.

Also, on behalf of the entire Supreme Lodge of the SPJST, we congratulate each of you on your continuing efforts

and devotion to the true meaning of the Sokol idea and fraternalism. was on February 21st, 1971 when you held dedication ceremonies of thi new gymnastic center here in the city of Ennis. I am fully aware of the great efforts and sacrifices that all of the members of Sokol Ennis and SPJST Lodge 135 have made in order that we might enjoy this occasion of burning of your mortgages. I am sure that the entire community joins with you in great pride and wishes you continuous growth, success and prosperity.

San Antonio Lodge Has Good Attendance Lodge No. 133 held their regular meeting Sunday, February 21; the attendance was very good; more than forty members attended.

As I have said before, the interest in our lodge has increased very much since the last SPJST Convention that was held in San Antonio in 1980.

On behalf of the local lodge officers, we wish to congratulate the members for their tine fraternal

spirit in attending our regular monthly meetings. It is a known fact that when you do have a good representation at the meetings, then there is more to discuss, there are more ideas from the members and, in general, there is much more done for the good of the lodge, so keep coming to the meetings and bring your friends or potential members; (Continued on Page 9)

In this issue is a picture of SPJST District III Director Sid Pokladnik presenting a $1,250 check, presented annually, to ASO Southern District President Ben Maca. This annual aid to the 140-year old gymnastic organization, Sokol, founded by Doctors Tyrs and Fugner in Czechoslovakia in 1862 for the purpose of giving its membership, male and female, training and pride in physical fitness, morals, patriotism, culture, etc. The motto is: "A sound mind in a sound body" Our fraternal society SPJST benefits in more ways than one in this fraternal gesture because most of the Sokol members are also SPJST members and are thereby more physically and mentally alert and fit as a whole and that benefits the individual, our Society, Sokol and makes for a better citizen. *** There is also another picture from Lodge No. 133 in San Antonio and, in that picture, you will see Brother and Sister Frank Valka. Your editor remembers well when, in 1960, that lodge said they would host the convention and Brother and Sister Kieprlik, Brother and Sister Valka, plus other members were the members who took it on themselves to work for that convention. The work they did is well-remembered by this writer and well-appreciated by our Society and, then again, with the leadership of Brother Emil Manila and Brother Dominic Netek,

the members of Lodge No. 133 again undertook to host the convention twenty years later in 1980.

Both conventions were very successful and, in both conventions, the delegates enjoyed true fraternal hospitality as can only be shown by true fraternalists. We hope that their lodge will have the most successful 65th ANNIVERSARY celebration possible, they are a lodge in the city of San Antonio which is predominantly of Spanish/Mexican origin and inhabited by a great majority of citizens of Mexican nationality, yet they certainly are preserving their ethnic background and letting San Antonio know that there is a certain element of CzechMoravian citizens living in that city! *** Making a new friend is a worthwhile and gentle art which is a process worth knoiving, especially when you learn the stranger's name and use it. One's own name is a precious and very personal possession. Anyone likes to hear his or her own name from a stranger as an individual and shows interest in him.

Sometimes pay a sincere compliment. Even the meanest man in town. has at least one good point — if you look for it. Perhaps he is a good gardener or musician. Maybe he can speak several languages or he may be "well read". If you can find something praiseworthy about him and recognize it, the man will soften.

When paying a compliment, you must be sure it is genuine. A compliment that is not true is quite an ugly thing. To find the basis for a real compliment you must use your powers of observation.

Also try to make the stranger feel important before others. A wellknown tool of the successful salesman is to compliment the prospect before someone who really matters. It costs nothing to make others feel important and it can double your popularity.

You can also ask his opinion.

Friendship grows easily if strangers can feel at ease. Nothing makes a fellow feel at ease sooner than talking. The quickest way to get people to talk and free them from any anxieties is to ask them about something interesting.

In most cases when you ask questions, it may become a magic in making a friend of a stranger. A question will soothe nervous people, quiet restless children, and help put strangers at ease. The question shows interest and puts the speaker at his best.

Also repeat his words. It is a great compliment to another's intelligence to prove that you have listened to his talk. If you can prove that you were so impressed by a part of the conversation that you remember his exact words, he will be highly flattered. ***

From the President's Office Bingo Laws To Be Strictly Enforced

The Incentive Program for 1982 has been announced and now it's time to "put your best efforts forward" so you'll be a recipient of an award.

The SPJST recognizes and rewards the producing sales representatives who help us grow.

Get to work and be a "winner" in '82.

State Comptroller Bob Bullock has announced that Texas' new Bingo Enabling Act will be enforced to the letter by the Comptroller's Office.

"Today I wish to put on notice everyone who conducts or enjoys the game of bingo in Texas that they will have opportunities to vote on this issue April 3 and August 14," Bullock said.

"In areas where there has been a vote on this issue, we are not going to second-guess the voters. Where they have approved the game, it will be conducted according to provisions of the Bingo Enabling Act." "Where the game has not been approved, we will also be following provisions of this law, which went into effect November 10, 1981," Bullock added.

The comptroller enclosed copies of the law with his announcement.

The Bingo Enabling Act's Section 42(c) provides that if the act is knowingly violated, "the court shall order all proceeds from the illegal bingo game or games to be forfeited to the appropriate governing body as a civil penalty."

Further, Bullock pointed out, violations of the act also carry criminal penalties under the Texas Penal Code.

"A word to the wise should be sufficient," Bullock said. "We mean to enforce this law."

Taylor Lodge To Recognize 50-Year Recipient Dear Members: Taylor Lodge No. 29 held its meeting Sunday, February 14 at 4 p.m.

Kevin Mikulencak, representing the youth club, presented the flag and led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in silence for our deceased member, Sister Frances Kotrla.

Roll call of officers showed all present, except Ed Jansen.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read. The treasurer's and the Property Committee's reports were given.

Cards were received from the Ben Holub and Frank Ovesnahy families.

We will recognize one 50-year member, Dr. E. M. Krenek, in our lodge and we will present him with a pin at our next lodge meeting.

The sales representatives' banquet will be held at our lodge Saturday, March 20. There will be a dance that night, so you can make plans to stay for the dance..

The District H spring meeting will be held at Elgin Lodge No. 18. Since the youth club will not have a cake auction, our lodge voted to aonate $100 to our youth club.

A motion was made and seconded that we have a May Fete again this year. Any girl 16 years or older and who is a member of our lodge and wishes to run for queen is asked to come to our next meeting Sunday, March 14 at 4 p.m.

Youth Leader Melvin Steger reported 37 members, 7 adults and 2 visitors present. They went skating 2 weeks ago in Temple. The youth club will present a program at the District II meeting in Elgin. Brother Steger said that there will not be a cake auction this year.

Door prizes were won by Elsie Kaiser, Catherine Lehmann and Louis Kind.

Our next lodge meeting will be Sunday, March 14.

Saturday, the last dance in February with music by the Knights of Dixie, was very well-attended by nice people enjoying the atmosphere of our Chandelier Ballroom. In charge of the dance for the first time was Irna O'Conner with her sister, Irene Slovacek, in the box office.

Frances Crossman was busy selling advance tickets to Al Pierson's Dance for Friday, March 19 and attending to the cloakroom. Rosalee Kostom was at the door greeting the arriving guests while her husband, Tim, with Louis Hanus seated the guests at their tables. Irma, as head of the committee, requested an appropriate song: "Help Us Make It Through The Night" for the sixmember committee; this came as a surprise and was appreciated and 0 51.54 received with applause. All four sisters, on the committee, by sheer 0 accident, wore luscious pink gowns.

0 Sister Bessie Vasula underwent 0 surgery Wednesday, February 24 at 0 the Heights Hospital; we are glad it 0 was a successful operation and get0 well quick! By the time this will 0 appear in print Bessie will be at 0 home and with us.

0 Again, we parted with a brother 0 of longstanding, Brother Arthur L. 0 (Hans) Drawe, who entered into rest Thursday, February 25, 1982 at the 0 age of 80 years. Brother Drawe was 0 a resident of Houston for 47 years 0 and a native of Fayetteville, Texas.

0 Funeral services were held at 12 0 noon in the Chapel of the Garden 0 146.35 with Dr. D. Orval Strong officiating, with graveside services Saturday at 0 115.61 3 p.m. under the auspices of the Masonic Fayetteville Lodge No. 240 0 AF & AM. He was laid to rest in the 0 Fayetteville City Cemetery.

0 Survivors are his wife, Laura 0 Drawe; daughter and son-in-law, Exa 0 Lee and Bill Bishop; son and 0 daughter-in-law, Ralph and Doris 0 Drawe; sister, Nola Wunderlich, all 0 of Houston; two brothers, Harry of 0 Houston and Milton of Fayetteville; and four grandchildren. Brother 0 1,319.90 Arthur Drawe was well-known as a barber for most of his life; he 0 groomed many of our members and 0 will be missed by many. May he rest 0 in peace. We bow our heads in sorrow to have one so young to pass away: Dennis Wayne Stuchlik, age 32, died Thursday, February 25, 1982 here in Houston. Rosary was held Friday at the Heights Funeral Home and funeral services were at 10 a.m.

Saturday in All Saints Catholic Church, with interment in Weimar, Texas at 2 p.m. Survivors include his wife, Janet Stuchlik; parents, Lorene and Jerry Stuchlik, both members of Lodge No. 88; one sister, Barbara, and two brothers, Allan and Alton. Our deepest sympathy to the surviving family.

Dearest Members: We had a beautiful day February 14 for our lodge meeting, President Albert Kubala opened the meeting and our Brother Murphy led in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

The youth members were at "Chuck and Cheeses," so Brother Murphy substituted, with just a little age difference, but that's OK Brother Murphy because we were glad you did it. Thanks!

Secretary Sister Christine Zich read the minutes, which were approved after a few minor corrections. All the reports of the other officers were also reported and were satisfactory.

Youth Leader Gordon Hubenak and his assistant Chryl (his wife) took the children to "Chuck and Cheeses" and I know they had a good time because my granddaughters Kellie and Brandie came back all excited and happy, and also the rest of them including Gordon and Chryl.

Next month, March 14 the youth will have a kite-flying contest, so all the children bring your kites and practice before Sunday. (Gee, I hope Kellie and Brandie know how. I hope it, won't be up to me to show them how to fly a kite, the only one I can show how to fly a kite is Albert.)

Manager Frankie Tesar reported on the dance and especially on our "Ballroom" dancing. It has been very successful. It is so nice to see the ladies in their long dresses and men in their coats/ties. Albert and I have really enjoyed the dances.

(Betty, get those "blue jeans" off of D.B. and put a suit on him and come see us.)

We had a Valentine Dance that was real nice, a lot of the ladies wore red to fit the occasion. A door prize was a box of candy and a Queen/King for the night. I failed to get the name of the lady and gentleman who got the prize.

Lizabeth, that flower was artificial. We also celebrated our real good friends, Elmer and Liz Howard's 25th Wedding Anniversary that night. They are a great couple and we wish them many more anniversaries.

Brother and Sister Murphy also announced their first greatgrandbaby; it was a little boy named Nathan Allen Dearing; mother and dad are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dearing.

Brother Murphy announced that he had a great, great, great-grandbaby.

Fraternally, Jerry Mikulas, Jr. Financial Secretary -SPJSTalso are great-grandparents of a baby boy, born to Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Matusivich of Victoria, Texas.

I have missed taking my mother Mary Hejny of Lodge No. 5 in Tioga to our lodge meeting. She was staying with roe for a few months until s4ie had a slight stroke and the doctor insisted on putting her in a nursing home in Pilot Poia. I am so proud to say that she loves it there.

My mother is very happy at the home because she loves being

around people her age and being waited on; that is all new to her. She also loves to read the Vestnik.

The lodge gave away three boxes of Valentine candy to the lucky people, who were: our Financial Secretary Evelyn Spacek, Marie Tesar and Joyce Tesar. Watch those calories, girls! (Just a line to tell you how honest this drawing was, Albert bought the candy, Lizabeth had the drawing and I passed out the tickets and neither one of us won a thing.

Ha!) The meeting ended quietly and again we feasted to a delicious meal prepared by Marie Tesar and her assistant, Joyce. I am sorry to say that this time no gentleman appeared in the kitchen to help. I walked in to see Brother Zich standing and watching his wife.

Christine, drying dishes after she had a long hard afternoon with those minutes, I didn't ask what his excuse was, but I bet it was good.

Our next meeting will be March 14, at 2 p.m. I hope to see our members there because I've noticed some of them were not present.

Sister Bartek, we missed you. Sister Inez Krivanek was at our meeting strutting a new hairdo. It looks pretty, Inez!

Remember the meetings are held at 2 p.m. at 1505 S. Gevers Street in San Antonio; there is plenty of parking space across the street, no come out and see what we have planned for you for the rest of the year.

Once again, we want to remind the members that we are going to celebrate our 65th Anniversary, March 21 at the Polish-American Center, located at 2611 Mission Road.

All members will receive a free dinner ticket, but you must call for them not later than March 15; also, if you have friends who would like to attend, the tickets are $3.50 for nonmembers; you may call for information at 532-3916. Also a reminder to others who were notified to be our guests, please do let me know if you are going to attend not later than March 15. Preparations have to be made in accordance with how many people will attend. Dinner will be served at 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.; a program will begin at 2 p.m. with the introductions of our officers, guests from other District VII lodges, District VII officers and Supreme Lodge officers; also, as special gue,sts, we will have representatives from other fraternal organizations.

A short history of our Lodge No. 133 will be given by Brother Jaroslav Kleprlik; it should be very interesting to relate a history of 65 years.

Entertainment for the afternoon will be the Polish Folk Dancers, the Czech Choral Club singing the beautiful songs of the past for you and also many songs that are now very popular in Czechoslovakia. We also will have dancing music for you

We want to mention about our February 27 dance that was a real success in spite of the activities around Houston and Pasader especially the Fat Stock Show a' Rodeo, We did have a good number of cowgirls and cowboys dressed ie. their western attire and some in casual dress wear and the ladies in formals and gents in nice-dress suits, Thank you, gracious ladies and gentlemen also brothers and sisters, for your support; thanks and come again and invite more guests to come with you.

Spring time is nearing here and with God's will with good weather to all of us, including the farmers, so all things could be better and we hope, by the end of the year, we will have a more and better atmosphere for you and all of us; just keep coming and you will be glad you did and, who knows, if you decide differently, you might become one of us.

Recently, we were told that Julius Tupa was better than ever, so come and dance to his country-westernvariety music more often for he and his musicians are going to love you for that; his music is really a knockout. Invite your relatives and friends to come and dance with us to his music by Julius Tupa and The Midnight Shift. At the door, as hosts to our guests, were Brother Monice and Sister Marie Green. Thanks to you two good-hearted people.

Monice and Marie did an excellent job; we all appreciate your kindness for being so supportive, quick and alert to our guests and to others at any time.

March 6 we had Donnie Wavra and the Hi-Lighters playing variety music.

March 13 we will have another well-known country/western band

Mr. Brandl, a former brother from East Bernard, celebrated his birthday February 27 at our lodge dance. Eddie Brandl, the birthday celebrant, had 10 or 12 people with him and his wife.

We were invited by a well-known and good Brother Clarence Phillpop, who serves as the entertainment chairman at the Legion Hall in Crosby. Due to his several invitations and tempting us so many times to come and dance at their dance, we finally did and, only by luck, to whose music we danced to was none other than LeeRoy Matocha's music from Fayetteville!

We really enjoyed ourselves dancing to his orchestra. Clarence is a real entertainer. It really was a pleasant Sunday outing by going to Crosby on a clear, sunny day.

We've heard and are really so sorry to hear about our Past President Victor Peter of Lodge No. 172 who had a mild heart attack. God bless you, Victor, and we hope to see you up and around soon; also we heard that Sister Sophie Baker is also recuperating very nicely. Happenings at Lodge No. 183 9 Mid-Cities Dear Members, This past weekend another surprise birthday for one of the lodge members was held; the Sulak family had a very beautiful party for Helen "Happy Birthday," Helen from all of the members of the lodge! This is a very good way to have a family gettogether and to be able to see some relatives that you may not have seen in a couple of years.

You members remember that Saturday, March 13 is lodge dance night and that the country and western band NEW COUNTRY is playing for your dancing pleasure, so mark your calendar and plan to be there because this is what keeps the lodge going. The more social activities you attend the harder your lodge officers will be working to please you.

Tell your officers what you would like to do and, if you know of a band that you would like to hear play at one of our dances, tell Daniel Roznovsky so he can make a deal with them and book them for one of your dances.

Sunday, February 28 (yours truly), your reporter bowled in fund-raising for 'Big Brothers and Sisters of Tarrant Co.'; four of the members of Lodge No. 183 sponsored me and we are sending $41.14 to 'Big Brothers and Sisters of Tarrant Co.' Also remember that Sunday, March 14 is Lodge Day at 6:30 p.m. at the lodge hall; plan to be there; this is the only way you really know what your lodge is planning to do for the next month ahead.

To those of you desiring overnight lodging, the Holiday Inn in Temple on 1-35 on the west side of Temple has been designated as accommodations headquarters. It will be up to each individual to make his or her own reservation. In addition to lodging, meals will be allowed for those staying overnight. In claiming reimbursement, the IRS requires that you submit motel bills because they consider lodging compensation the same as income. (Sorry, no allowances for alcoholic beverages; the motel staff has been so informed.) Those wishing to make reservations may do so by contacting the Holiday Inn, 802 North General Bruce Drive, telephone 817-778-4411. If you write, address your letter to the attention of Faye Dillard, and if you call ask for her because the arrangements for the workshop were made with her and she is familiar with all the particulars.

Directions to the Holiday Inn: For all those traveling from the South on 1-35, the next exit after you pass the Adams Avenue Exit is the Nugent Avenue Exit. Take that exit, proceed to Nugent Avenue for about half a mile and cross over 1-35 to the left and then take the service road on the west side of 1-35 back to Holiday Inn. For those coming into Temple from the north on 1-35, take Exit 303, which is the Nugent Avenue Exit, and go approximately one-half mile to the Holiday Inn. Those coming into Temple on Hwy. 36 from the west or south, and on Hwys. 95 and 53, the above directions should suffice, except that you will probably utilize South 1st and Adams Ave. coming into Temple, the latter being the main east-west artery through town.

Adams runs into 1-35.

Directions to the Home Office: For those of you who have never been to the Home Office, it is located at 520 North Main, which runs north and south through Temple. We are situated across (but not directly across) from the main Post Office and you will see a prominent sign "SPJST Fraternal Life Insurance" on North Main Street and three "lollipop" signs on North 1st Street, however, entrance into our parking lots is only from Main Street.

(Central Avenue divides Temple north and south and Main Street divides it east and west.) There are virtually no one-way streets in

Those of you coming to the retreat from the South on 1-35, take the Adams Avenue Exit and go east about 1 mile to the Municipal Bldg.

Those of you coming in from the north on 1-35 should take Exit 303 on the north edge of town and then follow the North 3rd Street signs, come approximately one and one-quarter miles to the second red light, which is French Avenue. Make a left on French and go 2 blocks to North Main and make a right into the parking lots of the Supreme Lodge Building.

F-STRICT II SPRING MEETING TO BE HELD AT ELGIN The District II business meeting will be held Sunday, March 21 at Lodge No. 18 in Elgin. Registration will start at 1 p.m. The business meeting will start at 2 p.m. with a break at about 3:15 p.m., followed by a short youth program and then go on to finish the -business meeting including the election and installation of district officers.

Immediately, at the close of the meeting, a meal will be served by Lodge No. 18 at a nominal cost; at 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Lodge No. 18 is sponsoring their regular Sunday evening dance with m sic by Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five.

The officers of District II invite all members of District II to attend this meeting; we hope to see you there.

The District II skating party held February 21 was a huge success, again; we had 152 youngsters and adults skating and-an additional 30 onlookers. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given, they were both accepted as read.

We then turned the meeting over to our youth leaders. We will be going ice-skating March 14 at Austin. We
