VI Honors Sales Representatives

District

Director Matt Vanek was the host of an Appreciation Social for the Sales Representatives of District VI. The Social was held at the Spanish Village Restaurant in Victoria, February 14, 1982. The festivities started at noon with a hospitality hour followed by a delicious Mexican buffet. Awards were presented to the top producers in District VI by SL Vice-President Gebala and District VI Director Vanek, following the dinner. The top three producers in District 6 in 1981 in order of production were Emil Morris, Lodge No 148; Frankie Vanek, Lodge No. 50 and Annimae Merta, Lodge No. 30. Approximately fifty sales representatives and their guests were in attendance.

WHY DO YOUNG PERSONS WANT INSURANCE? Usually . . . banks, firms, and individuals are favorably impressed by young persons who want life insurance. Several years ago, under the direction of Brother Albert Blaha, Sr., the Czech Heritage Society of Texas (CHST) had its beginning.

With the support of the Historical Committee of the Czech-Ex. Students Association of Texas (CESAT) and The Council of Higher Education the CHST hopes to assist in preserving and maintaining the heritage, language, history, culture and genealogy of the Czechs and Moravians in Texas.

Recently, your editor received "The Saga of Ernst Bergmann, 1981"' by Dorothy Klumpp, (a great granddaughter) and Albert J. Blaha, Sr. It is a very nice book, and very informative. (I have not read it in its entirety, yet.) And this week I received the January-February, 1982 (first issue, Vol. 1, No. 1) of Nase Dejiny (Our History) printed by the Old Homestead Publishing Company, Box 45, Hallettsville, Tx. 77964 — Editor Doug Kubicek. It is very informative and contains much historical data. It will be published hi-monthly (6 issues a year) and the subscription rate is $12.50 a year in Texas. We will give you more information in the future. On the front page, we are publishing a picture of Ernst Bergmann who probably could rightfully be called: "The father of the Czech-Moravians in Texas." *** To the young family man we wish to suggest that financial security is a lot of little things: It is knowing that if anything should happen to you, your family can go right on living in this same home.

It is knowing that someone who has no heart interest in them won't be bringing up the child or children while their mother is at work each day.

It is also knowing that the survivor(s) will never have to wipe a tear as they wave goodbye to high school classmates going off to college.

It's knowing that when she is

older, your wife can live with the children if she wants to but will never have to live off of them.

It is knowing that you have a regular, systematic savings and investment plan.

It's knowing that you will never lose an invested dime.

It is also knowing you can let others worry about the instability of the stock market and the fluctuations of real estate.

It's knowing that neither you nor yours will ever have to get by on the limited amount Social Security affords.

It is knowing that, as a grandfather or father, you will be welcomed in your children's home as a guest, and not as someone who has no place else to go.

Additionally, it is knowing that signed, sealed and delivered contracts put your financial problems on someone else's shoulders. *** The editor would like to take this opportunity to reveal something about our fraternal insurance societies, especially the SPJST .. .

The legal reserve fraternal system is the most humanitarian institution and the greatest stabilizing influence in existence.

In addition to providing the safest form of home protection and individual and family security, it renders a truly altruistic or varied service — friendliness, courtesy, kindness, helpfulness. All the fraternal societies, from their very inception, emphasized the love of family, the protection of the home, and expressed a common faith in the principles of democracy.

Nothing can destroy fraternal societies — except from within -because they are not themselves organized to destroy anything except human misery and distress.

Life insurance, in general, is a business which commands complete dedication to service on the part of every person engaged in it Although there is satisfaction in bigness, there appears to be greater satisfaction in being small enough to have and to retain the human touch — the awareness of responsibility to both the owner and the prospective owner of life insurance. We are here on earth not to get all we can out of life for ourselves, but to conscientiously try to make the lives of others happier and more secure.

There are days of great opportunity and great challenge.

Here in the field of fraternal life insurance, is a job so big, so all-encompassing, so absorbing, so vital, that it demands the utmost from all of us. Let us then meet our allimportant job entrusted to us. ***

From the President's Office Charitable Donations/Projects Dear Members: I am happy to make a follow-up report on our lodges making charitable donations to local organizations. I appreciate and am proud of the response to my recent request.

From February 1981 to February 1, 1982, Lodge 74 Lovelady near Crockett donated a total of $1,313 in charitable donations and conducted various improvement projects. This amount is broken down as follows: Cancer Fund $100 Heart Fund $100 Muscular Dystrophy $313 Crockett Fire Dept.... .... $200 Taylor S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home . . ...... . . . .. ..$100 Houston Co. Emerg. Corp $200 Latexo Fire Dept $50 Lovelady Fire Dept $50 Jaws Of Life Fund ............ $100 Cottrell Family $100 Various lodge projects included buying a lot and a half for additional parking space, asphalting the front parking area; painting the Youth Room; constructing a metal storage building.

In our recent report, the information on charitable donations from Lodge 79 in Corpus Christi was given us by District VII Director Thelma Hrncir; the information on Lodges 180 in Burleson and 183 in Arlington was relayed to us by District III Director Sid Pokladnik.) ***

WORKSHOPS—OVERNIGHT LODGING Regarding the workshops, if the response continues as good as it has been of late, we expect a near capacity attendance. Consequently, we will not be able to accommodate visitors (spouses and others) in the training sessions themselves, but they would be welcome to tour the museum and do whatever else they would like during the workshops.

We have to do this since the sessions are planned primarily for the officers of the lodges. We would appreciate, however, notification as to how many persons are coming, including visitors, so that we might have an accurate count for the noon meal on Saturday.

Overnight lodging on Friday night was and is intended primarily for those coming "from a considerable distance", as has been stated in the letter and notice that has appeared several times in the Vestnik.

Without specifying the number of miles involved, we certainly would not consider it reasonable or fair to reimburse someone for overnight lodging who lives within an hour or two's driving distance from Temple,

10perhai)s even three. All of us, at one time or other, have to get up a little earlier to get where we are supposed to be by a given time. We ask that you not request reimbursement in such circumstances. If you live within an hour or two's driving distance from Temple and you wish to stay overnight, we ask that you do so at your own expense.

Lodge No. 15, Buckholts Meeting Held Feb. 10 at 7 P.M. "Be Proud Of It." pledge of Allegiance "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation, under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for an.-

A routine meeting was held this date with all officers present. The meeting opened with a Pledge of Allegiance led by President Ann Balusek.

A moment of silence was a tribute to deceased member L. A. Svetlik.

Secretary Charlsie Svetlik read the minutes and they were accepted as read. Treasurer Pat Hillman then gave her report and it, too, was accepted as read.

After some discussion, it was agreed to get together estimates on the air-conditioning and ceiling installation for approval by the members. The Building Committee was requested to repair the frozen water pipes.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Milton Schiller and Charlsie Svetlik.

On the sick list was Mrs. Frank Orsag.

Ann Balusek reminded members and officers of the "Workshop" at the Supreme Lodge and also reminded them that their dinner, reservation needed to be mailed in.

The meeting was adjourned for a social of homemade chili and the trimmings. A special thanks to Pat Hillman for making some really good chili.

Dear Members: Our meeting was called to order

by Vice-President Eugene Haisler, in the absence of our president. He then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing in memory of Sister Frances Janacek.

On our sick list we have Jerry Simek; to him and any other members who may be ill — a speedy recovery!

We welcomed these visitors: Willie and Adeline Kohutek, members of our neighboring Lodge No. 47 in Seaton, and Barbara Macek.

Secretary Pat Vanicek read the correspondence and a thank you note from the family of Sister Frances Janacek, for the wreath of flowers. She also read the, letter from the Bell County Livestock Show asking for donations.

The membership decided we should appoint a Donation Committee again for this year to, act on all donations and the members appointed were: Johnnie Svoboda, L. B. Haisler and Laveda Giestman.

The financial-secretary presented these new members to be accepted by the members, namely: Brent Vanicek, signed up by Sales Representative Louise Zavodny; and Daniel Michalik, signed up by SR Doris Svoboda.

A suggestion was brought up by the Board of Trustees to have some type of dinner and dance open to the public for entertainment. A committee was appointed to look into the matter, namely: Bobby Hoelscher, Albert Cabla, and Terry Taylor.

Youth Leader Carol Chervenka gave us a report. She mentioned the District II Skating Party at Skate Haven February 21, this will be the social of the month: She also encouraged all youth members to attend. Then she presented a plan for approval by the members to have a barbecue to make money for the youth members to be held at the hall Sunday, March 28 at 2 p.m. The youth members would sell tickets in advance. The membership approved this, so everyone get your tickets and support your youth club; also March 21, the District II spring meeting will be held in Elgin and she urged everyone to attend.

Members having birthdays and present were: Tracey Jo Chervenka, Beverly Marek and Billy Smetanka; and those having an anniversary included Johnny and Carol Chervenka. We also want to remember a special couple who are members and who celebrated their 62nd Anniversary; they are Brother Charlie and Sister Olga Stepan. To all these celebrants and any other ones who may be celebrating these occasions: Best Wishes!

Lodge No. 25 February Meeting

President James Whitfill called our regular monthly meeting to order at 8 p.m. Thursday, February 11,1982.

Sergeant-at-Arms Garry Mizell led the 32 members present in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for Brothers Stanley Mikel and Clinton Powell.

Youth Leader Sister Betty Macalik urged everyone to support our youth while they work the kitchen during dances; a Valentine Party was planned for February 14 at 2 p.m.

Brother Louis Kudrna thanked all the members who came prior to the meeting and helped tighten loose bolts on tables. Due to the large response, everything was ship-shape with plenty of time to spare before the social dinner started prior to the regular meeting. A big thank you to Dorothy M. Kudrna for preparing the dinner.

Brother James Whitfill also expressed, the lodge's thanks to Brother Garry Mizell for delivering the 100 new chairs.

Honored Guest, Sid Pokladnik, thanked our lodge for offering to host the Fraternal Sales Seminar at our hall March 28, and personally extended an invitation to our President James Whitfill and his wife.

New member Kenneth John Krajca was accepted into our lodge for this month.

Important meetings to attend are: March 10 —Fraternal Council business meeting, 7:30 p.m.; members are asked to provide pastry since our lodge is hosting.

March 11 —Spaghetti Dinner at 6:30 p.m., per Social Committee, and regular business meeting at 8 p.m.

Lodge No. 32 Plans Czech Festival

Our regular monthly meeting was held February 3 at the Americana Room of the American Bank of Commerce. There was a breakdown in communications, so we did not get our regular meeting place at the Citizens National Bank.

After President Mike Ahlstrom called the meeting to order, we pledged our allegiance to the flag and had a moment of silence for our departed members. Roll call of officers found all present. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

The books for 1981 were audited and approved by the Audit Committee which consisted of Sylvia Kocian, Franklin Elles and Katherine Wokaty.

The Victoria Czech Singers were paid for their last two performances at our Czech Festivals.

Ella Arnold and Lois Elles were appointed as general chairpersons for our annual Czech Festival to be held June 27 from noon to 10 p.m. at the Victoria Community Center.

Frank Rokyta and Theofil Kocian are on the Dance Committee. They booked the Heart of Texas Czechs (HOT Czechs) for the dance at the festival.

Katherine and Alton Wokaty are in charge of the Country Store again this year. They ask that members be considering what they will donate to the country store and the cake walk.

Other chairmen have been tentatively appointed at this time and when we are sure that they accept, we will report their names.

The festival will have a hot meal (menu to be decided on later), cake walk, country store, auction, etc. and sandwiches will be sold during the dance.

After the meeting adjourned, refreshments were served by Adele Donalson and Katherine Wokaty.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 3, at the Citizens National Bank.

We thank the faithful members who attend each meeting, and again extend our invitation to all others to come and enjoy the company of their fellow members. We need you.

Dear Members and Friends: The monthly meeting February 7 started promptly at 2 p.m. with President Jerry Pechal presiding.

Flagbearers Mark Tepera and Nora Skrabanek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Visitors were: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Haisler from Lodge 24, Ann Balusek, Ed Billeck, Joe Krahulek, Mrs. Joe Fojtasek, Mrs. Millie Baird, Glenn Delaney, Stacie Horelica, Allene Rudel and Lydia Sherer, both from Houston and Helen Wiley from Rockdale. We welcome all of you visitors. The welcome mat is always rolled out for visitors.

The roll call of officers showed all present and each gave satisfactory reports.

Correspondence was read by Secretary Dolores Skrabanek consisting of a thank you note from the East Bell County Water Directors for the use of the hall for a meeting, also a thank you note from the family of Frank Popelka for the spray of flowers. She also read a letter from SL Headquarters stating that Lillian Kosarek and Anton Vitek will be the recipients of 50year pins. They will be honored in our April 4 meeting, also a letter from the Temple Youth Fair and Livestock• Show asking for a contribution. The members voted to donate $100 for this worthy project as we have done in other years.

New members accepted into our lodge are David C. Beach, William Robert Shafer, Ottmar Eichmann, Jr., Charles Everett Voelter and

Glenn Allan Hutka. Transfers into our lodge are Frances Dorsey, Ella Bartek and Shirley Bartek. We hope some or all of you can attend our lodge meetings and other activities.

Reported on the sick list are Frances Novosad, Catherine Skrabanek, Kitty Sodek, Mary Zavodny, Ginger Klusacek, Rudolph Schiller and Clara Hejl. We wish each of you a speedy recovery.

Brother Pechal reported the following members helped to move the old bar building Saturday, January 23rd: Woodrow Marek, J. D. Chlapek, Charlie Marek, Robert Heese, Edwin Pechal, Donald Pechal, Willie Kohutek, David Pechal, Mike Wilson, Dan Balusek, Jerry Pechal, and, last but not least, Little E. J. Pechal, 5 year-old grandson of President Jerry Pechal.

Brother Pechal's sons always come out to help when there is work to be -done at the hall and now he is training his grandson to help — good work, Brother Pechal; also a special thank you to Brother Pechal for the use of his tractors to move the building. The members voted to compensate Brother Pechal $50 to help pay for fuel for his tractors.

Evelyn Heese, bar chairperson; Charlie Marek, ticket chairman; and Adeline Kohutek, kitchen chairperson, all gave satisfactory reports.

Elmer Skrabanek, secretary of the board, read the minutes of the last board meeting. They were acted on as necessary.

Maintenance Committee Chairman Woodrow Marek reported the water cooler in the Youth Room is not working. The members gave Brother Marek approval to buy a new cooler.

For our after-the-meeting lunch, Willie and Adeline Kohutek surprised a lot of members with a delicious stew. We couldn't have found a better day for it; the weather was cold, and perfect for stew. Of course, we couldn't have done it by ourselves. A special thank you to Charlie Marek, Frances and Emil Hejl, and Jerry Pechal for all the help Sunday morning, preparing the vegetables; also I want to thank the ladies who brought cakes and helped in the kitchen before, during and after the meal.

Brother Woodrow Marek gave the audit report for October, November and December, 1981.

Youth Leader Mike Wilson gave a very good Youth Report. He reported 29 members and 3 guests present. The youth club sold Tom Watt's gifts after the meeting to whoever wanted to buy them. He also reported that, at our next meeting March 7, a police officer from the DPS will give an informative talk on drugs. Anyone, who is interested, is urged to come and attend this meeting. He also mentioned the fact that the youth is preparing a skit for the District II meeting, which will be held March 21 at Elgin Lodge No. 18.

Birthdays in February are: Lillian Kosarek, Adolph Shenkir, Shirley Patterson, Eugene Hejl and our visitor, Millie Baird. "Happy Birthday" to all of you!

Lodge Schedules March 12 Meeting Temple

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 87 held their regular lodge meeting Friday evening, February 12 at 7 p.m. with President Vlasta Jez presiding.

The minutes were read and approved as read.

Joe Plsek, lodge treasurer, and Ladis Navratil, financial secretary, gave their reports.

Old and new business topics were discussed and voted on.

Special guests for e the evening were Willie and Adeline Kohutek from Lodge No. 47; we were delighted to have them visit with us.

Willie reminded the lodge of the District II spring meeting in Elgin, Texas March 21, so try to attend.

We welcome our new member, Jimmie McCully, into our lodge.

A hot dog supper was served before the business meeting, and it was enjoyed by all.

Sophie Palmquist is convalescing at her residence from her recent illness; we are so happy that Sophie is getting stronger each day; also Ed Sebesta is reported to be improving.

Our thoughts are with you both and others who are convalescing.

I heard red birds singing in the backyard this morning so maybe springtime is not too far away. Hope everyone had a nice Valentine's Day. Our next lodge meeting will be Friday evening, March 12 at 7 p.m.

Houston Lodge No. 88, February 8th, 1982 Meeting The meeting was called to order

by President Pflughaupt at 7:40 p.m.

Flagbearer Lynn Pflughaupt presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which, the members stood in silence and tribute to deceased members Vernon L. Gollrad, Charles E. McClellan, Daisy Jane Patzold and Josefa Pilat.

All officers were present but one and our visitors were Sidon Tumis, Rosie Tumis and Mary Ann Kieschnick of Lodge No. 142, J. M. Skrabanek, Ann Gerlich, Albina Hilsher, Eula Gould, Connie Struckmeyer, and Bernie Gebala and Jerry Mikulas from the Supreme Lodge.

Secretary Clara Broz read the minutes of the January meeting, which were approved with one correction and then read the correspondence. After reading a list of 11 applications for insurance, 2

social members and 2 transfers, made's, motion that they be accepted as read, seconded by Sister Allbritton and carried. " All insurance and financial reports were read and approved.

Youth Leader Joyce Mynar reported the Youth Club working on crafts, will clean and keep up the flower beds at the lodge, will attend the rodeo on February 27th and thanked Sister Marian Kadlecek for donating a ping pong table and equipment to the Youth Club. Their next meeting will be February 14th at 3 p.m. after which they will sell "nachos" in support of the lodge anniversary.

It was announced that Anniversary Day would be on February 14th with a baked chicken dinner, social from 2 to 4, free dance with music by Donnie Wavra and the Birthday Club and the ladies of the lodge preparing the pastries.

Board Chairman Royal Warnasch reported on the actions taken at their meetings which included approving Timbergrove Little League to have sign-up 3 Saturdays at the lodge and sponsoring a little league team; helping sponsor Lynn Pflughaupt on a trip to Washington; making a donation to the March of Dimes and taking applications for a night watchman.

Members reported sick were Sisters Almedia Bravenec, Adele Dybala, Laura Warnasch and Brothers Jerry Kolacny, Ed Kadlecek and Franklin Bravenec.

District V President Tillie Helmcamp announced the Spring District V Meeting to be March 14th at Lodge No 142 with a barbeque dinner, Lodge No 88 Orchestra and Choral Club performing, program by the youth, election of officers and a happy hour with good music. The Youth Club will also have their meeting.

Sister Birdie Pech presented the 1981 Memorial Book and donated the $40 of cost for the book.

President Pflughaupt announced Czech classes beginning Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:30 p.m. and stated that if anyone was interested to sign up now. A meeting, after the adjournment of this meeting, will be held in the Red Room to discuss the automation system with Brothers Bernie Gebala and Jerry Mikulas from the Supreme Lodge. He also announced the Officers' Workshop, March 6th at 10:00 a.m. in Temple.

Sister Mary Kosut reported 48 hours and $65 in expense as charity work for January.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 149 members present. "Happy Birthday" was sung to members having birthdays and a list of anniversaries was read. Door prize winners were Sisters Clara Broz, Olivia Davis and Margaret Liebscher with special Liberty Savings prize winner Brother Joe Zucha. Refreshment donors were Brother and Sister Kelly and Brother and Sister Kocich.

Meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m.

Our next monthly meeting will be March 8th at 7:30 p.m. with covered dish supper before the meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Lodge No. 142 To Host District V Meeting Houston

President Mary Ann Kieschnick called our monthly meeting to order Sunday, February 7 at 2:10 p.m.

The 49 members, who were present, stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

We then had roll call of officers and reading of the minutes from the previous meeting by Secretary Alice Jochen.

The officers' reports were also given.

I am sorry to report sick members for the month: Barbara Veselka, Monroe Koehn, Dorothy TU1TliS, Reynoldo Perez; hope all are feeling better at this time.

New members are Duane Allen Willett and Kenneth Roy Willett; the sales representative of the two applicants was Alvin Melnar.

We are proud to announce that we now have a new youth leader. Congratulations to Carol Cerny!

We, the officers of our lodge, are looking forward to being present at the Officers' Work Shop at the Supreme Lodge in Temple, March 6.

We also wish to invite everyone to the District V spring meeting to be held at our lodge hall at 5508 Nolda in Houston, March 14. A delicious barbecued meal will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. We'will also have the Lodge No. 88 Choral Group and Czech Concert Orchestra for entertainment prior to the meeting, which begins at 1:30 p.m.

Worth Lodge No. 154 Welcomes New Members Ft.

Dear Members and Friends: We are having some beautiful weather. I don't know if these sudden changes are good or bad for all the flu and colds going around.

Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan. The members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased Brother Rudolph Kubala.

We made welcome Brother Frank and Mary Picha and Brother David and Connie Guerney, and hope they come often.

All the reports were approved as read.

Brother Milan reminded the officers of the Workshop to be held in Temple, March 6.

Sister Mary Renfro explained the new method, due to the computer.

She and Sister Jeanie Mason attended the meeting that was held at Lodge No 84 in Dallas and said it was interesting and gave a report on all the details.

Youth Club Leader Sister Carolyn Clevland reported the youth members were busy making Valentines and later they were given to all the sisters, they did a beautiful job. She reported they all enjoyed the January meeting at Chuck-e-Cheese. After their meeting

they had Flowers and Valentines they took to the Four-Season's Nursing Home and they were greatly appreciated. They were sorry to lose two of their members, Matt and Stacie Bromlow who moved to Hereford, Texas.

Brother Frank Kovar and Sisters Merle Bailey, Jeanie Mason and Mary Pavey were appointed to the Czech Culture Society.

New members accepted and we make welcome are: Mike Chernosky, Bettye Chernosky, Danny Suges and Brian Halverson.

Jerry Max Lane got a nice welcome back and he said he was glad to be back; he will play again March 6 and 27. (Calendar will list the dates.)

We want to wish a speedy recovery to James Chris Peaton who has been in the hospital. He is the son of James and Sister Susan (Steinman) Peaton.

Our door prize recipient was Brother Benny Pavey. Youth Club — January meeting, Jodie Steinman and February, Carrie Ann Clevland.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, March 14 at 3 p.m.

Another project has been done, additional lighting has been added to the parking lot.

Refreshments and social followed the meeting.

From Lodge Rozkvet Pasadena No. 172 News

To All The SPJST Members: The meeting of February 10, 1982 was very informative. Six of our officers and members, Brother Dan Berry, president; Brother Jerry Dressler, 1st vice president; Sister Tennie Coffman, treasurer; Brother Norman Tofte, Board of Trustees' chairman; Brother Albert Risinger, Building Committee chairman; and Sister Amelia Tofte, wife of Brother Norman Tofte, on the morning of February 10,-1982 made a quick trip to the Supreme Lodge in Temple and returned in time for our meeting and brought back some good news about our loan.

It looks like we will finally get started on our new lodge building, hopefully, before the end of the year; mostly what is left to do is contract negotiations and a lot of work for officers and members alike. We have to meet certain requirements of our Supreme Lodge, which I think are OK. During the meeting we had Brother Louis Hanes, District -V director, who spoke and gave us some information on different aspects of a successful lodge and also initiated new members.

Brother Albert Risinger gave us information on how much our building will cost and also passed out pictures and floor plans of the new lodge home. I will try to get one for publication later and more information on the building.

I will not go into a report of our dances today because Brother John Mikeska covered it in his letter already.

The door prize which wasn't drawn for in January was drawn in our February 10th meeting and

6/VESTNIK — Wednesday, February 24, 1982 Brother Paul W. Zucha's name was drawn, but he was absent. The February meeting door prize was drawn for Brother Louis Brinlee (also absent). The prize was $300, but you have to be present to collect.

This will be my report for now.

Academy Lodge No. 177 Schedules March Meeting The February meeting was called to order by President Rae Lisenbe at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 10. Everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Lisenbe had roll call of officers with all present.

Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe read the minutes of the previous meeting.

They were approved as read. We had received correspondence from Tolly Moore and the bank.

The reports were presented by all committees.

William Henry Adams was accepted into `our lodge as a new member. We welcome you and hope you will participate in our lodge activities.

We had two visitors, Mr. and Mrs. Milligan. We invite you to come again.

Due to icy weather our social scheduled for Friday, February 5, was cancelled; it will be scheduled at a later date.

Thank you and appreciations were expressed to the lodge for buying tickets for the Toby Rodriquez Benefit held Sunday, February 7.

The members voted to buy two baseball uniforms for the Tri-City Merchants' Young Men Slow Pitch Baseball Team that involves young men from the following communities: Heidenheimer and Little River-Academy.

It has also noted repair has begun on the edging around the dance floor.

Youth Leader Ann Tomastik announced that the youth members will have a District II Skating Party February 21 at Skate Haven. The youth of our lodge are planning a dance April 2.

Warrenton Lodge Plans March 11 Meeting/Box Supper Dear Members and Friends: Our Lodge No. 179 held its regular meeting—Sunday afternoon, February 14 in Warrenton Store Guest Room with a nice attendance; and the youth club entertaining the group with a Valentine Party.

President Harold Bergmann opened the meeting by leading members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Secretary Jeanette Schoenst read

the minutes of the previous meeting.

Sister Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both readings were accepted as given.

Dorothy Oltmann gave the financial statement and read the correspondence and also the sum on the refund chepk from, the Supreme Lodge; the lodge deeply appreciated the check. Refund checks were handed to Sister Oltmann to distribute.

A motion was made, seconded and carried for the approval for hiring that special band for our annual feast.

After some discussions, it was decided to have a variety shoot in the near future, therefore, the president appointed a Variety Shoot Committee consisting of: Brothers Lee Leonhardt, Fritz Schoenst, Jr., and El Gene Eckermann.

It was decided to have a box supper for our next regular meeting.

Every family is to bring a decorated box filled with goodies. After the auction the boxes will be set on the table for all the members and guests to eat for lunch. The price limit for a box is not to exceed five dollars.

Thanks were expressed to the youth club for an enjoyable evening.

Everyone who hasn't paid their local lodge dues for 1982 is reminded that they are due now and will be accepted by our financial secretary.

Our next regular lodge meeting will be on the second Thursday of the month, which is March 11, again; Youth Club meets at 7 p.m., and adults at 7:30 p.m.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned. Afterwards all of us enjoyed a lunch of baked ham, sandwiches, two beautifully decorated Valentine cakes, chocolate fudge squares, pies, chips, pickles and refreshments.

Lodge No 183, Mid-Cities News Dear Members: The lodge meeting was held Sunday, 14 February at 6 p.m., there was a small crowd attending.

The Sunshine Committee reported that our secretary was in St. Paul's Hospital; also that Diann Kuyawa was in Memorial Hospital.

Helen Sulak and Dorothy Kral had been in the hospital and that Stephanie Schneider has had ear problems; last report the lodge had was that they were doing better.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We hope you get better, soon; we miss you at our meetings and socials. If you know of any member who is sick or in the hospital, please call Inez Greenlees (214) 262-8811.

The chili supper was a great success. The cook really outdid himself and there was enough for everyone to eat. Great cooking, Lambert; perhaps the lodge should enter you in the next chili cookoff. If you members like this kind of gettogethers, come to lodge meetings and tell your officers what you would like to have next time. You lodge members who are thinking of having a party or wedding, why not have it at- the lodge hall where you have plenty of room and you won't get your house messed up.

There was, again, a lodge full of

people for the dance that followed; the music was very good and kept the floors crowded all night. You have to give Henry Rejcek Band a big hand for really playing good all night. The lodge was beautifully decorated by our Decorating Committee: Karen, Nancy, Diane, and Stephanie. Great job; keep up the good work!

About 11:30 there was a big surprise at the lodge; at least it was for Karen Hlavaty. A real live wire, a singing birthday telegram, from Western Union. I believe everyone enjoyed the birthday song and the show that was presented. "Happy Birthday" Karen from all of the lodge!

There are still a lot of valentines decorating the lodge hall from all of those artists drawing valentines.

The winners of the Valentine contest for those above 16 were: 1st place-Bob Betik, 2nd place-Betty Straton, and 3rd place-Jerry Kral. In the 15 and under class, 1st placeDarlene Roznovsky, 2nd placeBeverly Betik, and 3rd place-Donna Roznovsky.

There were some great valentines drawn and everybody had a lot of fun sitting around drawing, socializing and commenting on each other's drawings.

Just an early reminder about the lodge's next dance on March 13, beginning at 9 p.m., the music will be

by Martha Lindsay's Band NEW COUNTRY. This is a new band for Lodge 183 but I have heard this band and think it is a good country and western band. Plan ahead and try to be at the next lodge dance. If you are not coming to the socials and dances at the lodge, you are missing a lot of fun.

The lodge sent $381 to the Star House again, a rehabilitation center for alcohol and drugs, one of the charities of the lodge.

Two of the directors came by during our chili supper, had some chili and personally thanked the lodge for all of the help that the lodge has been giving them.

Dribbles From Lodge No. 88 Our Saturday night dance, with the famous Jurecka orchestra, was truly a very nice Valentine Dance with the Chandelier Ballroom decorated with large red hearts surrounded with lovely cupids. The orchestra members sported red coats to be in the Valentine mood and the guests, male and female, carried out the Valentine tradition in their attire. Joe Knapick, in charge of the dance, gallantly presented lovely corsages of Anthuriums, the red Hawaii flower shaped as a heart, to the surprised ladies on the committee. Joe, that was just right for that night.

Helping also were: President Larry Pflughaupt with J. R. Bruce seating the guests and the three lovely ladies, Katherine, dressed in a long black and white skirt with a white blouse, took care of the cloakroom; Dorothy, in a long black skirt topped with a delicate white blouse, served in the box office; sweet Carol, in a long red and white skirt with a lovely blouse to match, greeted the

guests at the door. The three couples were really in a Valentine mood! Joe, that was real nice to present your committee sisters with these lovely corsages for'Valentine's Day, and the nicest thing was that they wore them next day, Sunday, to our 17th Lodge Anniversary!

Our 17th Lodge Anniversary turned out real well the weatherman's prediction for a nice sunny day was marred by rain, not much, but just enough to make it messy.

Serving started at 11:30 a.m. and, by noon, the place was humming with hungry people to enjoy the delicious food planned by Chairman John Hilsher and prepared with the help of numerous volunteers. The baked chicken was very good as always and so were the well-seasoned vegetables! The pastry table was taken care of by the Birthday Club Sisters and thanks to all the generous donors of the homebaked goodies for which we are grateful and thanks for your generosity.

After dinner, to relax, a social was held from 2 to 4 p.m. with quite a few being lucky to have the right numbers; also thanks to friends and members in helping to move the tables for the dance. This was free from 5 to 9 p.m. with music by Donnie Wavra; the day ended to everyone's satisfaction.

A wedding anniversary was celebrated by a lovely couple, none other than Henry and Adda Kite.

They pledged their vows February 13th, 48 years ago and celebrated the event Saturday at the dance with their favorite music of Ray Jurecka's; a full table, surrounded by friends, wished both the best and requested the "Anniversary Waltz" for them to dance to. Adda wore a beautiful evening gown and sported a lovely corsage, a token of love from her husband, Henry.

Sister Naomi Spencer informed me of her brother, Emenual Kostom of Bisby, Arizona, being confined for five days in the hospital with an infection, but was progressing well and will be released to convalesce at home with the care of his wife, Beatrice, to pamper him; he will be as new very soon. Emenuel is our Lodge No. 88 member. Get well soon!

It was very nice to see Sister Hattie Chernosky come to the anniversary Sunday with her friend, Mrs. Parson. We missed Hattie; she wasn't around for quite a while but promised to come more often and make it a habit. Both of them enjoyed the company of Ruby Cernosek and her sister, Sidonia Poehls, and her niece, Joyce Plyler, and her two lovely daughters, Janna and Jay, the pride of their Aunt Ruby Cernosek because they both are "A" students. News From Pasadena Lodge No. 172

Dear Members, Vestnik Readers, SL Officers in Temple, Editor, Brothers and Sisters: We are indeed very pleased with our leadership members who are doing excellent work here in our lodge at Pasadena. God bless all of them in their work and efforts to continue in their progress, etc.

We, at Lodge No. 172, are not forgetting any of our brothers, sisters, relatives and friends who may be sick and who are situated in their homes or wherever, that we pray for all of them in respect and that God may give them rest until some day they are called.

Our last meeting was successful because there were members from far and near.- Let's keep up the progress and keep on attending to help increase a larger membership.

Our lodge leaders were very pleased with our brothers' and sisters' attendance at the past meeting, so continue inviting those members who have not been present for some time to our next meeting. Oh, what good news we have heard lately from our leaders!

I, as a writer to our SPJST Organ, the Vestnik, let it be known to our readers, even though some of our leaders work at night, (like myself) and still are doing our utmost part in leading a healthy and happy family group into our future for the betterment of the lodge and Society. I don't watch hot rod cars or daredevil motorcycle jumper stunts on TV, I come to the lodge meetings frequently for news to be heard from our leaders about, the lodge's future progress; I suggest that all our lodge members, no matter where you reside, come and attend our lodge meetings in Pasadena to hear about the future happenings and invite other friends of the lodge because it's your lodge and you may miss out on something very important.

At our Saturday night, February 13 dance with music by the 'Heart of Texas' Czechs, was pleasantly heard (variety music). Everyone had an enjoyable time and the beautiful music was also enjoyed by all of us.

We, indeed, were very proud, of the lovely people who were present to enjoy and dance with us from far and near places. Next time, when you will read in our Vestnik about our news that the music of the `Heart of Texas' Czechs are going to be in Pasadena, come and invite your relatives and friends or

working associates to the dance and hear the Czechs entertain. Thanks to our dear visitors, Brother Ray Woyek and his lovely wife (Valentine Sweetheart), of Round Rock, Texas and many others who were with them at our dance in Pasadena. My wife, Esther and I had a couple of dance numbers with Brother and Sister Woytek and what beautiful dancers they are! we really both danced and enjoyed them very much. All of you lovely people from Round Rock, come and be our guests; and, again, thanks for your support!

Selling tickets at the door were two beautiful Valentine hosts to all who attended the dance; they were Joseph and Henrietta Krenek and their assistants and one time good leaders, Albert and Tommie Risinger and James and Earlene Lymann. Thanks to all of them.

Thanks also to our new lodge president, Brother Dan Berry, who stepped up on the stage to give all of us the very best and to hear that as soon as the weather breaks and God be with us, that we, sometime this year in 1982, will have our new lodge home built on Preston Avenue and Strawberry Lane, north of Spencer Highway. For further details be present at our meetings to hear of the future happenings; if you are not present, then it's your loss, etc.

Oh, yes! at the dance there were some lucky people during the ticket drawings; be our guests and you, too, may be the lucky ones. We also had a Valentine guest with us, our beloved Sister Tinnie Coffman and lots of other leaders.

My gosh, I almost forgot about ourselves: John and Esther Mikeska were honored with a gift from our lodge leaders; it was a Valentine corsage; also for our daughter, Margie Lee Nelms, who received a corsage as a Valentine sweetheart.

Thanks to all of, you for the gifts which were very much appreciated from the bottom of our hearts; we love you all. (This really was a great surprise to us, the Mikeska family.

All of us have great pride in our lodge and its future). Brothers and Sisters, if some day you want to be surprised, all you have to do is: be present and help our lodge grow because only with your help, we can go on and continue toward a progressive future; without anyone's help no one can do a thing to accomplish something worthwhile and all of us must help each other like a family does and also, I, as well as many other ones will have to talk to people to join us soon at the lodge.

Saturday, February 20 we had the well-known City Polka Boys who played variety music from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., at 911 E. Shaw Street in Pasadena. We had another very enjoyable crowd last Saturday.

Saturday, February 27 we are having Julius Tupa and his Midnight Shift playing country/western and variety music at'our next dance.

He has the best Texas fiddler named Ernie, playing in the band who has won several blue ribbons among many Texas fiddlers. We are proud of our Texas fiddlers not only in Nashville, etc. (I was once the best country "concertina" player, too!)

Lodge To Host District II Meeting

The regular meeting of Lodge No. 18 for February was held February 16 with President Roy Simank presiding.

After the Pledge of Allegiance and the roll call of officers, minutes were read by Secretary Jeanette Peterson.

Janelle Mogonye sent a get-well card to Alton Prinz and a sympathy card to Albert Mikulencak. Alton Prinz thanked everyone for the cards and visits during his recent hospital surgery. We were sorry to hear that Bo Brian's mother is seriously ill.

We welcomed the following new members: Misty Evan, Alfred Spakes, Chelsea Green and Colby Green.

We will be hosting the District II spring meeting March 21 with registration beginning at 2 p.m., meeting at 2 p.m., youth program at 3 p.m., meal served at 5 p.m., and a dance at 6 p.m. with music by Jerry Haisler.

Special thanks were given to about 20 adults and 13 youth members who came out for a general cleanup Saturday, February 13; also special thanks to Curtis and Pat Young and Jeanette Peterson for their work with the youth members.

Mrs. Albina Mogonye had another check for the lodge from the recycled cans.

Premium refund checks were given to those members who were present; other checks will be'mailed.

Door prize was won by Gladys Mogonye; it was drawn by Verda Krause.

Jeanette Peterson furnished the decorated Valentine cake.

No. 88 Birthday Club News Lodge

February 10, 1982, Sister Pearl Hanka called the meeting to order.

Sister Rosalee Kostom read the minutes and they were approved as read.

Sister Lillie Spies gave the financial report and it was also approved.

Sister Mary Kosut, our sunshine lady, gave the report on those she sent cards to; a thank you card was sent to Mrs. Eddie Moore for the quilt she donated to the Birthday Club for a later date to be given away; birthday cards were sent to the ones who had birthdays and, getwell cards to Ed Kadlecek, Doris Froehlich and Anna Soukup. A card was signed for Sister Linda Bricker who is in Heights Hospital at this time; hope she is better by now!

Sister Evelyn Mikolas gave a good report on selling tickets in 1981.

Sister Tillie Bily donated $20 for the first Wednesday for the meat.

Sister Mary Johnson donated the delicious pickles for both Wed nesdays. Sister Ann Hoffman furnished the meat for the second Wednesday in honor of their wedding anniversary and also their birthdays.

Hostesses for February were Della Kadlecek, Tillie Bily, Josephine Buri and Bessie Dewer.

Dear Members and Friends, The month of February seems to be noted for many kinds of celebrations; from Valentine parties to programs to honor two great presidents of the United States, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.

This is also the month that many gardeners plant their onion and cabbage sets here in Texas. The seed potatoes are tucked away in many warm closets so the eyes of the potatoes will sprout for easy cutting before planting. These will also go into the ground as early as February 15th, but, for others, the latter part of February.

Just this week I had my first experience to report for Petit Jury of Tarrant County. Two days were spent in the Criminal Courts Bldg. sitting on a panel awaiting to be called for Jury Duty, but that time did not occur. Too bad, because I would have enjoyed the experience.

Due to building construction changes, the February 3rd meeting was held in the St. Thomas School basement. Fifteen members were present; so were three guests. The birthday member was spouse, Roy. He is now considered a senior citizen!

The March hostesses will be Louise Oujesky and Josephine Bugaj.

Glad to report that one of our members, Jo Prochaska, is out of the hospital and doing well. We send best wishes to Jack Ryder, who moved to California last year. He fell in his home and broke his leg.

Dear Editor and Readers: Today, I am coming with few lines to inform you, that we are not sleeping as a whole, since there are insufficient news from our officers or members. I've noticed that there is a time to be heard once'in a while from our unit: Sokol Corpus Christi, Texas.

Sunday, January 31, 1982 was a busy day to prepare an afternoon meal. The Kitchen Committee planned to serve barbecued chicken with all the trimmings, pastry and coffee.

The program started at 2 p.m.

President Gene Lehnart, in his welcome address, informed the audience, that the Sokol Corpus Christi unit members will be honored and presented with Sokol membership pins, starting with 5 years a member in many groups up to 50 years or more. President Gene Lehnert called out the names while

Vice President Roy Peal handed the pins out to each member.

After this, they were ready for the photographers, Brother Jerry Sijansky and Sister Helen Pavelka; there were some other photographers as well. These photos will be a valuable object for each participant and also for the SPJSTSokol Library in our fire-proof building. The pictures will be mailed later.

Among some of those older members who were missing for various reasons were: Sister Vinnie Kucera, age 81; Rosie Huff, 75; Victor Huff, 81; Agnes Elzner Bren, 85; Christine Knapek, 79; Eddie Knapek, 76; Raymond Peters, 74; and Libbie Peters, 73.

The meal was served free; the dance for the members was also free.

At 7 p.m., my dear daughter and son-in-law were ready to return home and so was I. It was a beautiful atmosphere outside and inside. The temperature outside was around 50 degrees and inside around 75.

The weather is dry for two months; only two showers: one 1/4 inch and one 1/2 inch up to date, February 9. Where I reside (inside of the city limits of Corpus Christi, about one mile from the Bay front), the temperature in December was below freezing (28 degrees) and in January and February, also the same. Instead of the freezing weather, rainy weather would have been more appreciated. There was great damage made in the gardens, fields and much other property. It was this way before: dry years and wet years!

February 28, 1982, the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas will hold their annual meeting Sunday afternoon in the SPJST-Sokol Hall.

(Continued from last issue) In 1915, I joined the RVOS Chapter No. 4 in Buckholts, Texas and served as financial secretary and treasurer, also' served as appraiser from 1915 to 1940.

I served as delegate to the following conventions: In 1921 to Convention VI at Cameron and served as secretary on the By-Law Committee; in 1925 to VII Convention at Taylor and served as convention secretary; (in 1928 I was elected at Buckholts as delegate to the Sokol Southern District Convention held in Dallas, Texas. In Dallas I was elected delegate to the National ASO Convention held in Chicago, Illinois); in 1929 to VIII Convention at Temple and served as convention secretary; in 1933 at IX Convention at Ennis again served as convention secretary; and in 1937 to X Convention at Flatonia.

In 1915 I was a bookkeeper for the Beef Club. In 1916 I became a charter member of the Sovereign camp No. 3264 Seaton, Texas Woodmen of the World. In 1916 I assisted to organize the CzechAmerican National Alliance in Buckholts. In 1917 I was as‘ member

of the Red Cross organization in Milam County. I was a delegate in 1918 to the Bazaar conduceed by the Czech-American National Alliance in Taylor, Texas; the bazaar profit of $55,000 was mailed to Chicago's main office.

In 1918 I became a member and was president of the congregation of Czech Freethinkers Organization in Buckholts; at the same time served as president and delegate to the State Convention held in Houston at the SPJST Lodge No. 142 Hall.

November 11, the same day, in the morning, we heard a proclamation that the World War I ended. We all joined the procession on Main Street in Houston, Texas.

During 1917, Frank Zalesky, a farmer and owner of one of three saloons in Buckholts, made me an offer to buy his supply, and take the business over. He kept the building and charged me $50 rent per month.

I found a partner, Louis Pavelka; it was all in his hands, except the licenses. The net profit split was 5050, my part to go to a clerk helper I hired because I was farming and could not be there myself working hours like my partner. All I got out of it was the knowledge that I gave two men good jobs.

In 1918 the State of Texas voted prohibition; this act put all saloons out of business. It was my salvation; I would not be here today because later on I learned where the saloon men had short lives. To, take good care of this business, I bought a Ford Model "T" auto. After World War I, there were many salesmen who sold shares for, new establishments called public enterprises; by buying this stock, it was also gambling. Well-known influential persons also came to me and talked me into making some investments. I made some investments in four different new undertakings, but no luck! Too much fraud and too many swindlers existed! Since then my confidence declined; no more "sucker" for this class of individual.

(My father, Josef Stasa, was born March 8, 1850 in Czechoslovakia and died August 8, 1917 in Buckholts on his farm.)

It was in 1919 when five neighbors: Thomas Zajicek, Joseph Zajicek, Anton Harnusek, John Stasa and Julius Ruzicka, called a meeting to be partners to the farm needs and furnishings. We established a $500 fund so that we could buy a gasoline engine with a circular saw to cut cord wood for kitchen stoves and heaters; this was attached to a four-wheel trailer. We also bought a press, to be used to press out juice from sugar cane and we built an oven to cook homemade syrup.

In 1921 I joined the Farm Bureau Organization; the fee was $20 per year. In 1922 I transferred to the Texas Cotton Grower's Organization. In the same year (1922) I built a new residence on the 74 1/2 -acreowned farm that was purchased in 1916 in the Bryant Station Community. It was a part of the Major Benjamin Bryant survey who served in the Old Mexico and United States War, in 1836. There was a hotel and post office (the only one between Belton and Bryan, Texas; the mail was delivered by stagecoach). These two buildings were later moved 1N miles north and served the new owners. In 1922

I also purchased a 50-acre farm fro: Joe and Rose Ennis.

In 1922 I became a charter member when the local Sokol unit in I3uckholts was organized and served as president from 1922 to 1936. (A fire destroyed the SPJST Hall). The Sokol unit used it for their activities; the equipment and the building were a total loss and that was the end to the Sokol unit in Buckholts.

In 1923 I served as a road overseer in the Bryant Station School District for six years. In the same year I was then elected school trustee and served as a secretary 11 years. (I received a friendly visit on behalf of a weekly newspaper "Vek Rozumu" from Editor Vaclav Miniberger and J. Jelinek of Chicago, Illinois; they toured the State of Texas and made some interesting addresses.)

In 1924 I attended, with six families a Sokol Slet in Fort Worth.

My dear late wife, Albina, was the local women's director and our children were participants.

During 1925 I engaged in the Sokol Exhibition at the City Park in Cameron, Texas, which was a great success. Professor Joza Havranek, who was a Sokol organizer and instructor for the American Sokol Organization, was the leader at this occasion. It was a great, exhibition.

In 1925 I also attended, with my family, a Sokol Slet held in Dallas; all were participants in the gym.

Instructor Havranek, in his address to the audience, also said: "Brother John Stasa, is the only Sokol president who is active in the Sokol drilling and is also one of the local Sokol instructors." (That year was another dry year in Central Texas; a set-back to the economy.)

It was in 1926 when I was elected chairman for the Sokol Slet held in Seaton, Texas.

That same year (1926) I bought a rent house and insured it with the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association (SVPS).

In 1927 I sold the 50-acre farm to Mr. Joseph and Frances Vybiral.

During 1928 I organized the Farmers Co-op Cotton Gin in Buckholts and was elected member of the five-member Board of Directors and, at the same time, elected manager and served six years.

In 1929 the United States Depression started. I was elected secretary for the Farm Bureau in Milam County and appointed delegate to the annual State Convention and served on the Audit Committee in Dallas, Texas. (In this same year, I made good cotton and corn crop, but the price was low.)

The year of 1930 I decided to rent out our farm at Bryant Station Community. In 1931 I rented a dairy farm near Cameron, Texas, with no success. In January, 1932 I moved back on my 74 1/2-acre farm.

During 1933 I was appointed one or the 3 Milam County Committee members to serve with Mr. Graves, the State Bank president, in Cameron and Mr. Freeman, businessman in Mansfield, on the United States Department of Agriculture; the certificate of appointment was signed by Henry A. Wallace, Secretary of Agriculture; C. C. Davis, Administrator; and C. A. Cobb, Chief Cotton Production Section. I resigned.

When I resigned in 1934, I sold my farm and moved to Holland, Bell

County, Texas, where I bought a modern cotton gin. Then I built a 5room residence and business building.

In 1935 my six-member family attended the State Convention at Temple, Texas to assist in the promotion on the Centennial Celebration held in 1936 at Dallas, Texas. We all attended this celebration.

I decided to sell the property in 1937 and opened a new restaurant in the Professional Building in Temple.

(The SPJST, in 1953, bought this building and moved the Supreme Lodge office in from Fayetteville, Texas.) The same year I bought the Kamenicky property in Pettibone, in Milam County; also bought farming equipment and rented some land to farm. The cotton gin was lost by fire in the ginning season in 1940.

In 1934, the President Franklin Roosevelt Administration, recalled the Prohibition Act that had existed from 1919 to 1934. The same year, when we were ready to move to Holland, Texas, our friends sponsored a farewell party for us in the SPJST Hall, which was filled; it was the first time for such occasion.

While I resided in Temple, in 1937 I was appointed by the Temple Chamber of Commerce to arrange the Czech National Beseda dancers; 32 couples of participants presented the planned program on the Temple city street, west of the City Hall, with I. G. Baca Orchestra, from Buckholts who furnished the music.

Training started at SPJST Lodge No. 47 Hall; the music was by phonograph with dancers from Temple and Seaton. Training at Cameron started in the National Hall; for the dancers from Cameron and Buckholts music was furnished

by Leo Majek, Sr. The final practice and rehearsal were held in Seaton Hall with all 64 dancers being present dancing to the 12-member Baca's enlarged orchestra from Buckholts and Temple. The performance was a great success. The Temple Daily Telegram newspaper, who propagated this program, then reported that the attendance was around 12,000 persons attending. This was a courtesy to the Temple Chamber of Commerce, and the citizens in the vicinity from the Czech-Moravian settlers. This exhibition was the first one in Temple when the public was invited to see some of the Czech old-time dances. There was no admission and all dancers and the band paid for their own expenses.

Recently, I received a letter and it was a pleasant surprise because it was from one of the Beseda dancers who also participated in this program; Mrs. Adela Stanek, Arnold Motl's dear wife, she was a Sokol gymnast. She wrote: "I enjoy reading your letters in the Vestnik."

My mother, Anna Stasa was born in 1858 in Czechoslovakia and died 11 June 1940 at Buckholts. In October of the same year I sold my property and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas where I bought 10 acres of farm land and rent property.

In 1941 I was elected cotton gin manager for the Farmers Gin and served 2 years. The hurricane finished the cotton harvest August 28, 1942.

During 1943 I decided to build rent property; then I got a job at the Corpus Christi Shipyard Company

Youth Counselors DISTRICT VI ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR 1982 Dear Brothers and Sisters: District VI Skating Party was enjoyed by 45 skaters and 15 parents Saturday, February 13, 1982 at the Silver Wings Skating Rink in El Campo. Lodges 40, Hillje; 30, Taiton and 50, El Campo were in attendance. After 3 hours of skating, each member was treated to a hot dog, chips and drink; hope we can do this, again.

This is to remind the youth members that the District VI Camp has been confirmed to June 28 through July 2 at Bastrop State Park. Please mark these days on your calendar.

The District VI spring meeting will be held April 18 at Sweet Home.

Each lodge should have a presentation to give to the members. An award will be given to each lodge that will participate.

An educational tour is being planned for the first part of June.

The children enjoyed skating and playing games at the skating rink.

After seeing how the children enjoyed skating, we hope to hold more meetings there in the future.

At the meeting we also made plans for our February and March meetings. The children were asked to bring valentines for everyone in the youth club and are to be responsible for bringing material to decorate a Valentine of their own creation. Prizes were also planned to be given for the best decorated Valentines.

Brother Macik was born July 27, 1904 in Snook in Burleson County, the son of George and Frances (Kotrla) Macik.

A lifetime resident of Burleson County, he lived in the Snook community. He was a farmer.

He was a member of the Snook Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge No 100 of Snook where he served as a bookkeeper for the lodge.

He was married to Olga Sebesta November 17, 1925 in New Tabor.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Olga Macik; son, Stanley Macik and daughter-in-law, Evelyn of Bryan; daughters, Mrs. James (Dorothy) Vernon of Snook, Mrs. Joe (Evelyn) Paul of Big Spring, Mrs. Leo (Olga) Havel of Houston, Mrs. Ernest (Lillie Mae) Martin of Houston; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Stella Macik of Houston; 18 grandchildren; 29 greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Fannie Sebesta of Snook.

Preceding him in death were a son, Clement Macik in 1973; his parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister.

Item of Interest Bankers To Address Financial Survival Of Farmers COLLEGE STATION—Texas agricultural producers are groping for survival in an unsettled economic climate, and they must depend heavily on their bankers and lenders as partners in the struggle.

Rural banks are also fighting for survival.

At times like these, those who provide operating capital for farmers and ranchers must stay abrenst of changing situations.

That's the purpose of the 30th Texas Farm and Ranch Credit Conference for Commercial Bankers at Texas A&M University Mar. 1-3.

Furthermore, bankers and lenders will have an opportunity for in-depth training in agricultural credit during a three-day workshop following the conference.

"A major segment of the conference will be devoted to discussions about bank holding companies, including pros and cons, pricing and tax considerations, management philosophy and personnel policy, and how to compete with a holding company," points out Dr. Bud Schwart.

Schwart is a dairy marketing economist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System, which is sponsoring the annual conference.

"More and more city bank holding companies are incorporating rural banks into the holding company system," adds Schwart, "so there is an acute need for credit officers and bank executives to become more familiar with the risks, needs and opportunities in production agricul ture."

Headlining the conference will be U.S. Congressmen Tom Loeffler of Kerrville and Phil Gramm of College Station. Leffler will discuss "Banking—Now and Future" while Gramm will give an overview of the nation's economy.

Those attending the conference will also hear about "Texas Agriculture in the '80s" from Reagan Brown, Texas Commissioner of Agriculture, and about "The Implications of National Farm Policy for Texas" from Dr. Ron Knutson, Extension economist in marketing and policy.

A session on 'Recognizing and Managing Problem Farm Loans ' and discussions on the special requirements of crop, livestock, dairy and farm equipment loans will also be featured.

Because many agricultural landowners have witnessed increased oil and gas activity, a discussion also deals with "Oil and Gas Leasing Hints."

Discussions on the outlook for rice, dairy products, soybeans, grain, cotton, sheep, hogs and cattle will give bankers and loan officials an up-to-date perspective of the major agricultural commodities, says Schwart.

Bankers and lending officials taking part in the agricultural credit workshop will be involved in computer simulation techniques to gain an understanding of agricultural bank management. Computer games will complement seminars dealing with sources of financial information, such as income statements, cash flows and balance sheets, and how these instruments are used in making and servicing loans.

1) Relative clauses are introduced by relative pronouns kterf or jeni.

Ktery is declined like an adjective of the type dobry, jen2 uses, except for nominative, the forms of the personal pronouns for the third person (jeho, jernu, j1) plus the ending -2. Like personal pronouns they change initial j- into n- when used after

prepositions.

The gender and number of the relative pronoun agrees with the noun it qualified (and follows), the case is given by the function of the pronoun in the relative clause.

The uses of the conditional: 1) Conditional clause. The English if is replaced by kdy + bych in corresponding form. Observe: Kdybych mel e'as, sel bych do kina.

(If I had time, I would go to the cinema.) Kdybys mi pujcil penfze, mohl bych si to koupit. (If you lent me money, I could buy it.)

Lekce sedma — Lesson Seven COMMON EXPRESSIONS OF COURTESY dekuji — thank you prosim -- you are welcome (means

"please" but used instead of English "you are welcome") rado se stalo — I was glad to do it nevi zae — don't mention it "Dekuji" is singular. Sometimes it is as "dekuju". Delcuji is more proper and is more often used. Plural is "clekujeme". It is not necessary to add an equivalent of "you", but it could be done and it is often done.

Then, it is "dekuji ti" when we are close to the person addressed, or, "dekuji Vam" if the relation to the person addressed is more formal.

The most common reply to the word "dekuji" is the word "prosim".

"Rado se stalo" and "nen( zae" is used similar to "I was glad to do it", or "don't mention it", in this country. dovolte (prosim)—with your permission, (please) pardon me, (please) odpust'te (prosim)—excuse me, (please) prominte (prosim)—I am sorry—pardon me nic se nestalo—it was nothing The word "proslm" is the most common courtesy word. The original is, "I beg you" and only from the context can you tell whether the word `prosim' means "I beg you" or whether it serves as "please".

"Prosim", shown above in parenthesis, because its use is optional, making it more polite.

The words, "odpust'te" and "prominte" mean practically the same. The informal address would be "promin and odpust" to be used only with those persons with whom you are on a "thou" basis. The "thou" and "you" basis sounds archaic in English, but there is an important difference in the relation between persons whom we address -thou" — in Czech "ty" — (the verb "tykati si"), and persons we address "you" -- in Czech "vy" — and, therefore, the verb describing the relation is "vykati si".

The English "I am sorry" in Czech means "Je mi lito". The Czech phrase is used in the same sense as the original meaning of "I am sorry", but generally, we can say that "Je mi lito" is used much more sparingly than "I am sorry". The latter can often be translated "odpusfte" or "promirite".
