The Czech Language Allocations Committee is accepting requests from 4-year colleges, junior colleges, and high schools who teach Czech for some funds made available by the delegates at the last SPJST Convention. Such request should include information of how many students are involved and of what their Czech program consists. Important Announcement TO All Lodge Financial Secretaries, Sales Representatives and any Interested SPJST Members We have received many inquiries on how the automated reporting system, which is now in place at the Home Office, will effect the local lodge financial secretaries and the sales representatives.

Although most financial secretaries will attend the Officers' Work shops on March 6, many have re quested additional in-depth information as to the "do's and don'ts" in the new billing system.

The sales representatives on the other hand will be paid in a manner which is much more beneficial to them and it is important for them to understand how their commissions will be paid. Because we anticipate many questions from the sales representatives in this area, we feel that this should be done outside the framework of a regularly scheduled

The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 177 in Academy was called to order by President Jerry Tomastik Wednesday, January 20 at 7:30 p.m.

The president led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Tomastik introduced our guests Brother Bernie Gebala and Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr. After a few words from Brother Bernie, he presented our door prize winners Josephine Tomastik and (Continued on Page 7) Insurance Sales Seminar conducted by the State Field Managers.

To assist those who want to know more fully, the new procedures, Vice President Gebala and Financial Secretary Mikulas will conduct briefings at the following locations: Dallas Area — Lodge 84 Thursday, February 4 -- 7:30 p.m.

Houston Area — Lodge 88 Monday, February 8 -- 8:45 p.m.

The briefings are for your benefit so you will have a complete understanding of the new system and hope you will show interest and attend.

Again, we would like to point out that the financial secretaries will cover billing at the Officers' Workshop and the Sales Seminars when scheduled in your area will touch on commissions as pertains to the sales representatives, however the above three (3) scheduled briefings are a more in-depth presentation.

A SALUTE TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN " . . . a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

That's how Abraham Lincoln saw the United States . . . and he helped to bring the nation closer to that vision.

We honor his memory because he honored his own highest principles.

For today try to live this day only and not tackle all your problems at once. You can do some things for several hours that would overwhelm you if you felt that you had to keep them up for a lifetime.

Try to be happy for today. What Abraham Lincoln said is true — that "most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

Today try to adjust yourself to what is and not try to adjust every thing to your own desire; take your family, your business and your luck as they come.

Endeavor to learn something useful. Read something that requires effort, thought and concen tration.

Today try to do at least one thing you don't want to do — just for exercise. Don't show anyone that your feelings are hurt. They may be hurt, but don't show it today.

Endeavor to be agreeable on issues that sometimes may not be your idea. Also act courteously, not find fault, and try not to regulate or improve anyone but yourself.

Saturday, January 30, 1982 was the 100th Anniversary of the birth of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The following information is from the U.S. News and World Report dated February 1, 1982: FDR's 100th birthday is being officially celebrated in 12 states and a score of cities. The major federal observance is in Washington, where federal museums and art galleries are sponsoring dozens of Roosevelt programs.

One exhibit, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, would have surprised many Roosevelt followers.

It includes a replica of the White House studio from which FDR broadcast his famed "fireside chats."

Few of his radio listeners ever suspected that the room had no fireplace. His 1938 Ford convertible is rigged so that he could drive without foot pedals. Many voters never realized how crippled polio had left him since age 39.

There will also be a new FDR stamp, 17 cents costlier than first class postage of his day.

In all, however, the Roosevelt celebration pales beside the centennials of other American leaders.

Congress agreed to hold a joint

session on January 28 in honor of the nation's only four-term President— provided that costs not exceed $25,000. By contrast, 1974 saw a Democratic-controlled Congress allocate 7 million dollars for the 100th birthday of Roosevelt's predecessor, Republican Herbert Hoover.

"I would have thought that a lot of Republicans would see fit to honor FDR," says historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. "After all, he saved their capitalist system for them." ***

A new film informing urban commuters of ways to reduce traffic con-gestion has been released by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (DHT).

The fifteen-minute movie, entitled "Keep Texas Moving," urges commuters to utilize carpools, vanpools and public transportation to travel to worksites. Drivers are given tips on improving traffic flow and employers are urged to consider work schedules which allow employees to avoid rush-hour commuting.

Transportation experts estimate that such actions can increase the capacity of existing freeways by as much as ten percent and greatly increase the return on public funds invested in urban transportation systems. For metropolitan areas such as Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, such actions by commuters could relieve current congestion and "buy time for new portions of urban transportation systems to be completed.

Although the film focuses on urban traffic problems and their cures, DHT officials hope that the film gains exposure throughout the state to include rural areas. Almost all drivers eventually travel through urban areas. Accidents which contribute to traffic snarls often are caused by drivers who are unfamiliar with urban freeways and driving procedures.

Winter can be hard on pets, notes the Humane Society of the United States. Short-haired and toy-breed dogs may need a sweater when outside to prevent bronchial difficulties. The sweater should cover the chest area which has less protective fur. Cats left outside on cold nights are often attracted to warm autoengine blocks, so before starting your engine on cold mornings, smack the hood to scare away any resident felines:

Of all the changes that have taken place in the U.S. since the turn of the century, increased longevity may be the most important, according to the American Council of Life Insurance.

In the year 1900, the average life expectancy of a baby boy was 46.3 years, while female infants averaged 48.3 years. By 1940, these figures had risen to 60.8 and 65.2, respectiveb Today, life expectancy at birth is '69.8 for males and 77.5 for females.

Charitable Donations Projects Dear Members: From time to time, our attention is called to charitable donations or projects that some of our lodges are involved in. Sometimes these are sizeable and represent a good deal of work. All of them however, large or small, represent the fraternal aspect of our organization. They are to be commended. In perusing the Vestnik each week, we see where lodges make this or that donation or conducting a fund-raising charitable project. This information is usually "buried" in the letters from the lodges.

In keeping with a recommendation of the Corporate Planning Committee here in the Supreme Lodge, and in keeping with the emphasis placed on fraternal/charitable work by the National Fraternal Congress, we would like to highlight these donations and projects in this column and space from time to time.

I am, therefore, requesting that lodges send me this information to be included in these special reports.

I would say that the reports of these should be limited to what was done since January 1, 1981 and through the present time and then continue reporting these on an on-going basis.

For starters, I would like to report some donations and projects, as recently reported to us: Lodge 79 in Corpus Christi recently donated $250 to each of the two rest homes in 1981. One of the rest homes will use the donation toward the purchase of a sewing machine.

Lodge 180 in Burleson donated $250 to each of the two rest homes in 1981, and $500 to the Burleson Nursing Home. Additionally, they are going to sponsor a free dance once a month for the benefit of the members. One of their projects for 1982 is to pave their entire parking area.

Lodge 183 Mid-Cities in Arlington made charitable donations of $1,836.53 in 1981, of which over $1,300 went to the Star House in Ft. Worth and $500 to the Muscular Dystrophy Fund. They also bought new tables and chairs for their lodge hall costing $7,280.

We need to let our neighbors, our communities, members, and the general public know more about what we are doing as a Fraternal Benefit Society in the field of volunteer and charitable work, and donations. We enjoy so many benefits and a special status and we should make every effort to reciprocate in some manner to show and acknowledge our appreciation. Also, publicity in your local media is a good thing because the people in your area should especially know what you are doing in this area. at Temple Junior College

Czech

The organizational meeting for a conversational Czech course at Temple Junior College will be held on Wednesday evening, February 3, 1982. The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. and will be in Room 202 of Berry Hall.

Anyone interested in studying the Czech language, at any level, should attend this meeting. Decisions concerning class levels, number of sections, and meeting times will be made at the meeting.

Interested persons who cannot attend the meeting should call the Continuing Education Office at 817773-9961 Ext. 211 at the earliest opportunity.

Instructor for the course will be Jeanette Jarolik. The class will meet for 30 hours and will conclude on April 14. Registration fee is $28.

This is a basic course stressing pronunciation, vocabulary, and conversation. The course includes insights into the Czechoslovak and Czech-American cultural heritage.

The Snook Lodge No. 9 met for their monthly meeting Wednesday, January 6. Meeting was called to order by President Richard Vajdak.

Financial Secretary Donnie Victorick had roll call of officers; all present.

Secretary Lyndon Jakubik read minutes of December meeting; they were approved as read. Communications included: Christmas cards, sales tax information.

Reports were given by the following: Property Committee Report — Ruth Kovar; Youth Club Report — Betty Schoenemann; Activities for youth include: Donation by youth to rest homes, Skating Party, Lion Club Supper Donation, YAD and Camp planning, and had 33 members present.

Schedule — Clinton Sebesta New Members welcomed include: Rhanda Walker, Erin Walker, Laura Reynolds There was no old business.

New Business: Hall Rentals and it was decided to have a Chicken Dumpling Supper March 27, 1982.

There was no further business and the meeting adjourned.

Box Lodge No. 13 Holds Monthly Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: Our monthly meeting was held January 17, 1982 with 29 members present.

We had the roll call of officers with 11 present and 2 absent.

All reports were approved as read.

We have decided to keep the street light on at all times since it does not cost very much.

It was discussed about fixing up the ladies bathroom.

With no further business, we had the drawing for door prizes: 1st — Keith Spitzenberger, 2nd—Monica Spacek, 3rd—Connie Korth.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Lodge No. 18 Welcomes New Members

Elgin

The first meeting of 1982 was held January 19 with President Roy Simank presiding.

Majority of the officers were present.

Minutes were read by Secretary Jeanette Peterson. A thank you note was also read from the Austin State Hospital Employees; they enjoyed their Christmas dance at our hall very much.

We welcome the following new members: Jimmy Lee Stork, Monte Edwards, Bobby Hudson and Herman Polk; also a transferee, Annabelle Zwernermann.

All committee reports were given and approved. Our present membership is 537. We are growing!

House Chairman Irene Helgren gave thanks to all members who helped decorate the hall for Christmas and the New Year's Eve Dance.

A very special thanks to Lydia Freudenberg for painting the candles for the tables.

Pat Young gave the youth report: Forty-nine of our youngsters had a fun-filled hayride January 15. She reported we rank second in State in attendance. Pat also expressed thanks to co-workers for the youth work.

Mrs. Albina Mogonye again presented the lodge with a check for the cans from the recycling center.

Get-well cards were sent to Kim Hause, Janelle Mogonye and Jack Carter; and a sympathy card to Wilbert Krause.

Our lodge will host the District II spring meeting, March 21st.

Thanks were expressed by Leslie Gustafson to all for visits, cards, and flowers during his recent stay in the hospital.

President Roy Simank reported that Verda Krause will be our new reporter.

Audit Committee will be Jim Mogonye, Arthur Johnson and Joe Haisler.

Jim Mogonye will be chairman of our spring fund-raising project.

We will have a "Cleanup Day" at the lodge, Saturday, February 13, beginning at 9 a.m. All help will be greatly appreciated because Trustee Anton Mogonye asked all members to lend a hand.

Pat said the youth will help clean up.

Door prize was won by Judy Prinz which was drawn by Sue Prinz.

Refund checks were handed out to several members present.

McCall, Jr. On the sick list we just want to mention Sister Helen Spanhel and Brother Joe Andel who had surgery and they are recuperating; and anyone who may be ill, a speedy recovery.

The meeting was turned over to SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska who was in charge of the installation of the officers and Board of Trustees members. He first thanked all the outgoing officers and board members. He then installed the new officers and board members charging them with their responsibilities of their individual duties.

President Dan Sebek then conducted the meeting and asked for all the reports; then he asked the secretary Pat Vanicek to read the correspondence. She read a letter from the Supreme Lodge letting us know we have some members who - are eligible for receiving 50-year membership pins. We discussed if we want to have a "doing" to honor them in the near future and it was decided to do so; we will be notifying those eligible as soon as we finalize our plans.

Financial-Secretary Doris Svoboda presented these transfers: Harold Vanicek, Sr., Willie Mae Vanicek, Brian Vanicek, Harold Vanicek, Jr.; and one new member, Dustin Bingham, signed up by Sister Louise Zavodny. We welcome these new members.

Our next order of business was to vote on the Rules and Regulations which were printed in the Vestnik over 30 days ago. A motion was made and seconded to accept the Rules and Regulations as the committee presented them. Motion carried to accept them as presented.

Our next order of business was if we want to continue the "Happy Hour"; it was voted to keep having it for the coming year and we will also keep having our social so all of you bring snacks; this is nice to have a

Selling insurance is our first important thing in our lodge and President Sebek asked if anyone was interested in being a sales representative and Sister Laveda Geistman said she would and the membership accepted her. We hope she gets many new members and hope this next year all our sales representatives dedicate themselves to selling more insurance so our lodge will grow. It is a job for all members; if you know of any new prospects contact one of our sales representatives to approach them.

The Audit Committee was appointed and they consist of: Arleen Tschoener, Vallie Haisler and Edwin Marek.

Brother L. B. Haisler was in charge of the New Year's Eve dance and he thanked those who helped him with reservations, decorating, and cooking the black-eyed peas; they were: Sisters Laveda Geistman, Doris Svoboda, and Irene Hoelscher. We also want to thank Sisters Pat Sebek, and Pat Vanicek for helping serve the black-eyed peas.

We got a report from the Youth Leader Carol Chervenka; she stated that the youth will start their meeting 30 minutes earlier at 7 p.m.; also the youth members will provide the baby-sitting during the adult meeting. Their social for next month will be a Valentine Party held at the lodge. For more information about the youngsters, turn to the youth section and read the report from the youth reporter.

The agenda will cover the normal reports and any other business needing attention at this time. If the weather, health and time will permit, we may have a report from our Audit Committee.

Time is the major villain because the Audit Committee could not receive the books until the January meeting, on the 10th, was over. The "Gathering of the Clan" will take place, as always, after the meeting.

The January meeting, as mentioned, was on the second Sunday, the 10th. It started on a rather sad note for we received word that former lodge vicepresident, Brother Robert Sperlik, had passed away that morning. All reports given were accepted. There was very little business to take care of and the meeting adjourned and reconvened by the coffee pot and food.

Sister Kainer won the door prize.

A few words about Brother Robert Sperlik. He was the lodge vice-president for a number of years

and aid not give it up until last year when his health became bad. He represented the lodge, as a delegate, in the 1976 SPJST Convention and was, again, re-elected as a delegate in 1979 to go to the 1980 convention.

He was unable to attend because of family health problems. On his own, he helped to repair things around the lodge building. His recent contribution was assisting in repairing the broken circular window. This was a week before his death.

The lodge furnished some of the sandwiches and liquid refreshments.

You could tell it was a cold day for over 30 cups of coffee were consumed. Everyone enjoyed themselves even though the "blue norther" insisted on showing its ugly presence by blowing hard, every now and then, through the incomplete repairs of the round window. Sisters Janik, Sabrsula, Haverda, Brdecka, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval furnished enough to fill the table; so, again, a big thanks to all of you good sisters. If anyone's name was missed it is an oversight for this writer did not have a list this time and had to work from memory; also, a special thanks to all of the members who assisted in the cleanup after the social. It was and is greatly appreciated.

Plans Work Day Dear Members: There will be a work day Satur day, February 13. The purpose of this work day is to repair the old bar building, which will be restored and used as a storage room.

Changed for Rowena Lodge The date of the quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 49 in Rowena has been changed for just this meeting time.

The meeting will be held Sunday, February 28, at 2 p.m.

This change is necessary for us to make plans for our District IV meeting, which will be held in Rowena, April 25, 1982.

Waco Lodge No. 66

Appoints Committees for 1982 Dear Members: Due to no lodge meeting in December, 1981, on account of our Christmas Party at Lodge No. 66,

we had a very good attendance and we express our thanks to the visitors from Supreme Lodge; wish more of you could have attended.

We were glad to have State Field Manager Silas Smith and Sister Jeanette, District III Director Sid Pokladnik and Sister Justine, and Editor Rudy Sefcik and Sister Maxine attend our party.

Brother Pokladnik spoke a few words; then he led the prayer before the meal.

To the Entertainment Committee Chairman George Shilling, his helpers and the kitchen helpers, a big vote of thanks for an excellent job; also to those who brought the delicious desserts; thank you very much!

We also thank Brother Joe Kaspar, formerly of Corpus Christi, who played on the accordion during the meal; the music was enjoyed by everyone and it was appreciated.

Brother Pokladnik installed the 1982 lodge officers and committees, following the meal.

Gifts were presented to President Daniel Nors and Sister Leona. The Youth Club presented gifts to their youth leader and officers.

There was a drawing for door prizes. These items were donated by the Entertainment Committee workers, Board of Trustees of Lodge No. 66, also other members and Youth Club. Thanks to all of you for the very nice gifts.

Santa stopped by to visit the youth and gave each a bag of goodies. It was so nice to see so many children present; also, they had a good time with Santa.

After Santa left to make his rounds, the Brazos Express played their wonderful music for everyone to dance by. I am sure everyone had a good time.

The committee worked hard to plan this event, decorating the hall, preparing food, setting up tables, etc. It takes a lot of time to prepare these events, so to Brother Shilling, his wonderful helpers: THANK YOU ALL for an excellent job!

The New Year's Eve dance was well-attended.

This ended another year and as we start the New Year 1982, may, it be a very happy and prosperous one to all of you.

Sunday, January 17 was our first meeting for 1982; President Daniel Nors conducted the meeting.

The flags were presented by Larry Brem and James Yates. The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and lodge motto.

Visitor was Katherine Holder. We hope you will visit us again.

In roll call of officers all were present except Sister Bonnie Pruitt, recording secretary, who was ill with the "flu-bug". We missed you Sister Bonnie.

The November minutes were read

by Sister Annie Harms. They were approved as read.

In correspondence "Greetings" cards were read from the Supreme Lodge, Editor Rudy and Sister Maxine Sefcik, also a letter was read from Luba's Travel Agency, Brother Leonard Mikeska that we have a 50year member, Sister Regina Adamcik, a letter from Brother Bernie Gebala and Brother Jerry Mikulas on the 8 percent refund to the lodge, and a thank you from the March of Dimes.

Sister Darlene Engelke will contact Sister Regina Adamcik to

have her attend the meeting and receive her 50-year pin.

Sister Engelke read a thank you note to those who presented a gift to her to make it easier for her to bring her books and items to the meetings, also a very beautiful note of thanks for the prayers, flowers, food, and calls on the loss of their dear mother, Sister Helena Engelke. May she rest in peace.

Board of Trustees' Chairman John Gaidusek had Sister Engelke read the minutes of their meeting held Wednesday night, January 6.

Brother Gaidusek thanked those who came to help clean up the conference room.

Brother Emil Hanus gave an overall report for the year of 1981.

Brother Frank Miller also gave a very detailed report on all expenditures of repairs done; replacing wiring, installing chandeliers, and also on game nights; both were very good reports.

Brother George Shilling, entertainment chairman, gave his report.

Following the meeting ham sandwiches, chips, and beverages would be served. Bookings for 1982 have been completed except New Year's Eve. The new 1982 schedules are out for the first six months.

Sister Libbie Parma gave a report on the Youth Club. The club had their meeting in December; also a pizza supper and game night. Sister Parma thanked Brother West for getting the beverages for the Youth Club. The YC gave donations to Meals on Wheels, 60 canned items to Caritas, a large number of grocery bags to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor, to the Salvation Army, and the 30 bags of goodies left, by Santa. Sister Parma thanked everyone who has helped her in the many years she was youth leader, especially to Brother Frank Parma who did so much in many ways to help her carry out her duties. Sister Parma has spent many years with the Youth Club and gave a lot of her time and hard work. Sister Parma has a lot to be proud of for the many youth members who were in the club for what they did, accomplished, and what they can show at Linden Hall, and the projects they have done in the past years. It was a struggle, good and bad times, but she can have a lot of memories of the Achievement Days, royalty balls, many worthy projects for so many charities and the socials; they were always busy doing for others and that will not be forgotten. We can all be proud of Sister Libbie, her youth club and her assistants for the many years of their time; these will be remembered.

Sister Barbara l3rem, the new youth leader, has a lot to look forward to. We wish her and the youth members a very successful year ahead. Sister Brem thanked those who helped on game night in the kitchen; they had a very good night. She also thanked those who cleaned the conference room where they hold their meetings. For the February meeting, the Juniors will have a Valentine card contest, and the Teens will make Valentine boxes. The club is collecting aluminum cans, all types of Campbell labels and grocery bags. If you have any of these items bring them to the youth, so they can help others with these items. Sister Brem said she would like to have Kay Owens and Leona Nors, as her

Health Committee Report — Sister Polly Gaidusek had sent getwell cards to Sister Philomena Miller who had been ill, we hope she is doing OK; to Sister John Simcik, we all hope and pray she is doing fine; to Brother Jerry Parma who had been in the hospital for surgery and we hope he is doing fine; to Brother Bill Cox, who had recent surgery; Brother Bill, we hope you are doing fine; to Brother John Scarborough, who was ill, we wish him a speedy recovery; to Brother Joe Jaska, who is in Providence Hospital, we hope and pray he will be home soon; and to Brother Sidney Janek, who is also in Providence Hospital; let us all remember Brother Sidney in our prayers so that he can be home soon. Sympathy cards were sent to Brother and Sister Louis Macha on the loss of his sister; to Brother and Sister Henry Narovec on the loss of his mother, Sister Rose Narovec; to Brother and Sister Alfred Pankonien on the loss of their nephew; and to Brother and Sister Milford Behringer on the loss of his father. May all these loved ones rest in eternal peace.

Our sympathy is also extended to Brother and Sister Bennie Engelke on the loss of his mother, Sister Helena Engelke.

Brother Otto Hanus said that Sister Matilda sent her thanks for all the cards, visits, prayers, and calls from the members. She is doing fine, can walk some without the walker, and she hopes to go home soon. Sister Matilda, we all hope and pray that will be soon. Good luck to you; we have missed you.

Baby congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Donny Oswald on the arrival of a son; the mother is the former Cindy Moore, and one of our youth club members. The proud grandparents are Brother and Sister Ray Moore.

Congratulations also to Mr. and Mrs. John Engelke on the arrival of a son; the mother is the former Diana Veselka. Very proud grandparents are Brother and Sister Louie Veselka, and Brother and Sister Bennie Engelke. John was also a former youth club member.

Before we criticize, let's stop and think; it is easy to find faults, but put yourself in their places and see how you would feel if they were criticizing you. It is a lot easier to talk, than it is to do the job, for we all give of our time to come to the meetings and work on these committees. We, at Lodge No. 66, have a large membership, so come on, lend a hand and we can make 1982 a very good year and, by clasping the hands of our brothers and sisters, we can show our Brotherhood, Benevolence and Fraternalism to each other. Lodge No. 84 Schedules Activities Dallas

Dear Members: The Entertainment Committee met last Wednesday and the following events should be marked on your kitchen cabinet calendar: February 6—Battle Dance; music

by Vrazels from Buckholts, and The Czech Harvesters of Dallas; dance time 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

February 20—Come and dance to the music of The Country Boys, with special songs by Brother Kenny Horak will find him on the stage plinking that beautiful banjo, giving Brother Bobby Adamcik a chance to corner someone to listen while he talks about that new baby and how great it is being called "Daddy."

February 21 —Initiation of new members; our monthly meeting starts at 3 p.m., and dinner served around 5 p.m.; members signed up in 1981 are guests of our lodge; invitations have been sent out. We do need a hall full of "older" members to welcome the new ones.

We will serve spaghetti and meat sauce, combination salad, garlic bread, dessert and drink as the menu. Our ladies are asked to bring pastry for the occasion.

March 6—Our lodge welcomes the Jodie Mikula Band for your dancing pleasure, from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Dear Members: President Vlasta Jez called the regular SPJST Lodge No. 87 meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening, January 8, 1982.

Jerry Valchar led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance; members remained standing in silent tribute to the deceased.

Dorothy Chervenka read the minutes of the previous meeting; they were approved as read.

Treasurer Joe Pisek, and Financial Secretary Ladis Navratil gave their reports.

Unfinished and new business were discussed.

It sure was nice to see Susan Schenburn smiling and so chipper after her operation December 21st; that is not exactly the way to spend a Merry Christmas, but she is fine and wishes to thank everyone for the prayers, get-well cards, phone calls and visits during her stay in the hospital; she said "I am lucky to have so many friends." It's nice to see you in circulation again and stay well!

Sister Martha Vasek met with a freak accident when she fell and broke her right hip and had to be taken to Rosewood Hospital where she stayed over two weeks and is now recuperating at home. About 9 years ago, Martha broke her left hip and was doing good all these years, and now had to go through the same ordeal again. Martha is the wife of our late Brother John Vasek who passed away several years ago.

Martha has a son, Gilbert; and daughter, Nita. Get-well soon!

Mrs. Lena Vasek, sister-in-law of Martha Vasek, is a very faithful guest and supporter at our social nights, thanks to her husband, Will, who always so willingly chauffeurs her on Thursday nights to enjoy herself, even if he doesn't care anything about the game; he rather indulges in a game of dominoes with the boys. Oh! I am going to let the cat out of the bag: Lena will celebrate her 79th birthday January 19. Happy Birthday!

Around our table, we all are concerned about the happy-go-lucky Tiny Allison, our companion on Thursday night; she is such a delight and we are missing her for the fourth week in a row. We all hope she will be back, soon. Sister Alma Croswell, another regular on Thursday, also was missed; her chair was unoccupied and I found out she was not even at work on account of a severe cold. Hope to see you next week!

Birdie Pech also must be under the weather; she and her husband, John, did not attend the monthly lodge meeting and the regular 17th Anniversary Birthday Club meeting. We miss all of Lodge Building these members when they don't show up. All of you get well and stay No. 88 Pokrok well.

We are very sorry to learn that Donna and Ronald Bueckner lost their baby at birth January 8, 1982 while going through the mourning of losing Donna's mother, Mrs. Clara Osborn, age 56, December 22, 1981.

Ronald and Donna have two lovely sons, Joel, age 7 and Daryl, age 2, to lighten their grief. Ronald is the son of John and Lola Bueckner, members of Lodge No. 88. Our sympathy to the parents and grandparents.

We all experienced unusual Texas weather for two days: sleet, snow and cold winds; of course, the snow did not last enough to build a snowman because it melted too fast.

This icy weather moved in on us Wednesday morning when we had our regular Birthday Club meeting.

Quite a few sisters and guests did not come, but the ones who braved the weather, bravely stayed for the meeting and for lunch; by that time sleet came down making a loud noise falling on the roof, followed with snow. It didn't take too long for everyone to depart for our homes. I arrived at home with a heavy cover of snow all over my car and was glad to enter my warm and cozy apartment. Here we freeze with a sign of snow; how about 3, 4 or 10 feet of it!

Not for me! It is beautiful today but our weatherman predicted just a spell of it and some more of the cold.

The Saturday night dance, with music by Vrazels, filled the Chandelier Ballroom with lively tunes of polkas and dreamy waltzes.

Hosting Committee for the dance and, in charge of the dance, was Rosalee Kostom. Tim, her husband, with Louis Hanus seated the guests.

Irma O'Conner was in the ticket office, Pearl Hanka greeted the arriving guests while Irene Slovacek attended to the cloakroom.

All four sisters were dressed lovely and so were the female guests.

Brother Arnold Spencer, with his sweet spouse, entertained guests at their table: Mr. Wernon and Kakki Cross, their neighbor and new members of Lodge No..88; also Mr. and Mrs. Parsley and mother, Mrs. Sears. I am sure they enjoyed the dance in the company of Naomi and Arnold; come and see us, again!

Brother Herbert Huber with his spouse, Gazela, entertained out-oftown guests, Jerry and Lorean Swafford of Hockley, Texas; after the introduction, I was delighted to dance a waltz (my favorite dance) with Jerry which I enjoyed very much. I was sorry to leave but my son and his wife were waiting for me to take me home.

We, at Lodge No. 88, pride ourselves on the intelligent clientele who patronize our regular Saturday night dances; for these we emphasize our dress code in our monthly lodge bulletin; and, on these Saturday night dances, the dress code is: no blue jeans or hats are allowed for men and only dresses for the ladies, (long or short). Friday night dances do not have a dress code, unless it is a special dance which As always ,aprnounced ahead of

time. Please observe our dress code; it will be greatly appreciated. You are always welcome at Lodge No. 88!

This past Saturday, January 30 we had John Sullivan to entertain you. We hope you had a great time as always.

Ft. Worth Lodge No. 92 Is Ready For The New Year Dear Members and Friends: First I want to wish all my friends and members of SPJST and our lodge a real happy and healthy 1982.

This is my first time as a reporter for Lodge No. 92. Sister Bartek, if this doesn't turn out real well I'll blame you. Ha! But I decided if my dear cousin Viola Dlabaj of Lodge No. 25 in Ennis and a dear friend Sister Mary Pavey of Lodge No. 154 in Ft. Worth could do it, I'll try it too.

I'm Helen Kubala and have been a member at Lodge No. 92 over 20 years. My husband, Albert, and I were managers of National Hall for 17 years, which we will never forget.

We enjoyed our work very much.

We made lots of friends and met a lot of people. We have four children, Sherrie Lynn, Larry Scott, Roger and Kern. Larry Scott has given us three beautiful granddaughters, Kellie, Brandy and Codi; you will probably catch me bragging about my kid here and there, hope not too often.

I started out 1982 in a bad way, I was sick at our first meeting in 1982, but my friend Liz Howard kept some notes for me and I will be able to know what went on at the meeting.

Thanks Liz! President Albert Kubala opened the meeting and after Corina Tesar led in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, the newly-elected officers were installed. Sister Christine Zich was re-elected our secretary; she is a very devoted secretary, it would be hard to replace her, thanks Christine for a job well-done.

Kenneth Krivanek was re-elected as our vice president. Brother John Murphy was re-elected our treasurer; well there is no way to find words to describe what Brother Murphy has done and is doing for the lodge; he is always busy doing something, and we appreciate it, too.

Evelyn Spacek, thank you for accepting again because such a responsibility is tough, Evelyn is our financial secretary. My husband, Albert, was also re-elected president; keep it going honey. It would be hard to do without all the others who were elected and reelected to other offices. Thank you all!

After the installation of officers, the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

We had donations given in memory of Robert Ruzicka from Inez Krivanek and Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Chaloupka and in memory of Haywood Bullock from Carl Zich and

family, and Helen and Albert Kubala.

The reports were given by all committees which were all approved.

Our youth leader, Gordon Hubenak is doing a good job with our youth. I just wish we could have more children since we have a good leader. You members of our lodge bring your children or your grandchildren. I know they will enjoy it.

Brother Gordon has a lot of good ideas to entertain the children.

We are having a Polka Dance at National Hall on February 27th; the music will be furnished by the Czech Mates. I can hardly wait. They are real good, so everyone come to the dance and have some fun.

We are excited over our next dance at the National Hall for February 5th; Gary Lee and his orchestra will play "ballroom" dancing and dress code will be enforced, men will wear coats and ties and ladies will wear after-five dresses. There will be ballroom dancing every Wednesday and Friday at National Hall. We are looking forward to having the "big band sound" back at the hall. Every Wednesday they will cater to single clubs, but everyone is invited. Don't forget February 5 will be our first dance so come try it out and see what you think. I know it will be great. In the future they plan on having name brands, so if you like beautiful, quiet music, come see us February 5.

After the meeting dinner was served to about 35 members, our Kitchen Committee Chairperson Mary Tesar made a delicious stew and garlic toast. Everyone enjoyed it Sister Mary. Our ladies brought the sweets, we all try to show-off our favorite cake and pie recipes and that's what makes it good and fattening. Mary, please squeeze out some of those calories. I think the Kitchen Committee is very important to our lodge because it keeps us all after the meeting and it gives us a chance to visit. We never rush to go home. The members enjoy visiting over a little "pivo" and then we have our lunch. We have a little fun helping Sister Mary clean up the kitchen; sometimes even a brother or two will come in and help wash dishes. We can pretty well depend on Brother Carl to help. Thanks and keep up the good work, Carl. (Mary, we appreciate you taking on this job; it's not easy I know, from experience.)

The Ladies' Circle of Lodge No. 92 are having a change in their meeting date; the original date was February 9, but it has been changed to February 11th, so please remember the change.

SPJST Lodge No. 88 Pokrok Houston February 16, 1964, President Tim Kostom turned the first spade-full of dirt at the Ground Breaking Celebration of the present Lodge Home at 1435 Beall Street. Brother Ernest

J. Hanka was then the Chairman of the Building Committee. There were city and county officials present along with the members of the lodge at this gala occasion. The first lodge home of Lodge No. 88 was built in 1911 on the corner of North Main, Studewood and Robbie Street. The second Lodge Hall was erected on the same location in 1935.

There were many who worked loyally and tirelessly to make the New Lodge Home a reality. It took many hours of labor to clear the land, cut down trees, mow the grass, move the dirt and plant the shrubs to enhance the beauty of the new Lodge Home. There were many who helped financially by cash loans, donations, gifts and some even surrendered their certificates. A quote by the then President Tim Kostom who stated it so well: "A salute to you who pursued the past, live in the present and forsee the future", this is what has made our lodge a success and shown the true meaning of Fraternal love, mutual helpfulness, fostered patriotism, loyalty and the devotion to our country.

The Board of Trustees consists of 15 members elected each year at the annual meeting by the members.

Each elected member serves for a term of one year. This committee is responsible for the lodge building, the grounds and the management of the finances. The Board Chairman is Brother Royal Warnasch and the Vice-Chairman is Brother Johnny Broz. The Board is divided into subcommittees, each having a designated duty for the one-year term.

The Birthday Club Sisters has been organized since Oct. 9, 1946 with 31 sisters as. Charter Members.

It all began during a quilting party held at the home of now departed Sister Rose Spanhel, that the idea of organizing a Birthday Club was formed. The first meeting was held on the birthday of the first president, Sister Frances Olexa. The primary purpose of the club is to promote fraternalism and to fill the need for social work and relaxation.

Its motto is "In work and knowledge, we find our salvation".

In 1934 the sisters organized the Kitchen Committee, their chief purpose was to manage the lodge kitchen. The Sisters aided the American Red Cross by sewing, knitting and rolling bandages for the war effort. Wearing apparel was collected and sent to the needy families in Czechoslovakia through the Red Cross in England. Sister Pearl Hanka, now president of the Birthday Club Sisters, invites all the ladies of the lodge and their guests to attend the Birthday Club Luncheon and Card Party on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. with a delicious hot lunch served at noon; also to attend the monthly meeting and luncheon on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m.

The Choral Club has been a part of the life of the lodge since its beginning, as singing is an inherent art of the Czech people. The first director was Frank Hlavaty. The Choral Club entertains at many of the local, city, county, and state activities. The Club meets regularly for rehearsal each Wednesday of the month. The director, at the present time, is Brother Tim Kostom and Sister Naomi (Kostom) Spencer is the pianist.

Lodge No. 88 is well-known throughout the State of Texas. "Hlahol" is a Czech word meaning "beautiful sound". It was organized in June of 1919. Jindra Grossman, a Czech immigrant, was the founder of the Hlahol Dramatic Club. The club presents both Czech and English plays. The members of this club give of their time and talents to entertain members and friends of our lodge.

The Youth Club of Lodge No. 88, under the leadership of Sister Joyce Mynar, extends an invitation to all youth, under the age of 17, to join in the activities offered to them. Since the time the lodge was organized the youth have been given special attention as they are the leaders of tomorrow.

Soon after the Club was organized a school was started to teach the children the Czech language and the lessons continued a long time after the second building was occupied.

The first teacher was Slava P. Studnicny who taught for several years. Mrs. Marie Cerny was their second teacher. The Youth Club members have won many award.; in hand craft, talent, and the "Beseda" dancing at both local and state levels. There are activities offered to the children throughout the year, including a summer camp. Bring your children to the lodge to join in the fun and activities of their lodge.

Lodge No. 88 is very fortunate to have a great Czech Concert Orchestra under the Direction of Brother Rudy Dybala and Brother Arnold Baca as the ass't. director.

This group of talented musicians perform at all the festive occasions at the local and state level. They have entertained many people with their ability to play the musical compositions of great composers. The Concert Orchestra rehearsal is every Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge in the Chandelier Ballroom.

Entertainment Chairman Homer Alexander and his committee of 29 members host the dances of the Chandelier Ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights. This committee provides many enjoyable hours of dancing pleasure. On Friday nights country-western music is heard to ring out providing hours of dancing fun. On any Saturday night you can dance to the sounds of Big Band ballroom music, polka, waltz and a variety of good dancing music. The Entertainment Committee has worked hard to present Big Bands from all over the states to provide a wonderful evening of great ballroom dancing Each summer the Hawaiian Dance is indeed a gala event! The committee spent many hours to decorate the Chandelier Ballroom to bring in the Hawaiian atmosphere.

The committee work through the year to keep the ballroom a place of beauty and a ballroom to be proud of. Brother Henry Kite is the vicechairman for this committee.

Every Thursday night many members and guests gather in the Chandelier Ballroom to enjoy an evening of games, refreshments and fellowship. The Social Night Committee members devote a lot of time each week to help serve the needs of the people. This committee also furnish the Social Hour at all the special occasions of the lodge.

This is a very dedicated group of people.

What a nice dance, with the music by the well-liked orchestra of the Knights of Dixie Saturday, January 23, the Chandelier Ballroom was almost filled to capacity with lovelydressed guests. In charge of the dance were Orville Simons with wife, Juanita, dressed in a beautiful beaded white gown; Kent Stephen served in the box office, his spouse, Jackie, with Frances Crossman at the door were greeting the arriving guests and Vic and Joy Gallow seated the guests at their reserved tables. All the ladies were dressed in very becoming evening gowns, including Della Kadlecek in a black and white shimmering gown with husband, Amos, attending to the advance ticket sale to the John Sullivan dance for the following Saturday.

To enjoy the dance, J. R. and Carol Bruce, daughter and son-inlaw of Herman and Margareth Liebscher came to celebrate their wedding anniversary, which was January 21st and Carol's birthday January 23rd; to make it extra special Margareth celebrated her birthday, which was almost as her daughter's January 18th. Carol was sporting a beautiful corsage and both were dressed lovely. (I think this is the first time I spelled Margareth's name right, I am glad she understands).

Dr. David Guillet and spouse, Nancy, of Kansas City, Missouri spent one week over the holidays here in Houston with David's mother Juanita Simons; also Nancy's mother, Mrs. Mabel Fusco of Chicago, Ill., Juanita and Orville Simons enjoyed the holidays in the circle of their family including son, Paul, and Mollie Guillet and their grandchild living here in Houston.

Our 17th anniversary of the opening of the present lodge home will be celebrated with a delicious dinner served from 11 a.m. until? In the afternoon a social will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and a FREE dance with music by Donnie Wavra from 5 to 9 p.m. Come out and enjoy yourself February 14, 1982, and be happy with us.

Our regular monthly lodge meeting will take place the second Monday, February 8. The usual buffet supper will be served at 6:30 p.m.; the meat, coffee and tea will be supplied by the lodge, and PLEASE, dear members, it's up to you to furnish a covered dish of whatever you please to bring, but enough for you and your family; it will be appreciated. We all are enjoying this friendly gathering before our meeting and you will, too.

Antonio Extends An Invitation To Their 65th Anniversary

Lodge No. 133 in San Antonio held their regular meeting January 17, at 1505 S. Gevers Street.

President Matula opened the meeting at 2 p.m., leading the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and also remembering our departed members of our lodge.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and were accepted with one correction.

The meeting was well-attended; there were 31 members present. I have said before our attendance during the past year has increased and we do hope that it will continue.

There has been a lot of interest created in our lodge and that is a good indication that, if you have a good attendance, the meetings are more interesting and there is more input of ideas and it just motivates you to try to do more for your lodge, so we urge the members to continue coming to the meetings and call on your other member sisters and brothers and remind them of the meeting.

On the sick list, we still have Sister Pat Keller sick, but doing better.

We had one application for membership, the applicant was accepted; our new member is Brother Anthony Trilicek.

Further discussions were held on the 65th Anniversary of our lodge which will be held March 21st at the Polish-American Center, 2611 Mission Road in San Antonio.

Dinner will be served at 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. A program will be held after dinner: welcome by our local president, recognition of our guests and visitors from other lodges, presentation of the lodge's history, and we hope to have, with us, our SL President Nick Morris. The program will continue with entertainment by the Polish Folk Dancers and also the San Antonio Czech Choral Club.

After the program you may dance to the tune of Jan Barszcz. We do hope to have a good turnout. All members of Lodge No. 133 will be given a FREE dinner ticket. These tickets must be received by the members no later than March 15. We will also have tickets available for anyone who is interested in attending our celebration; the tickets will be priced at $3.50. Dinner will consist of barbecued beef and country sausage, new potatoes with cream gravy, green beans, salad, pastry and coffee; a real bargain for that price! We ask all our members to bring their friends and potential members to the dinner.

Dear Editor and All SPJST Members: Our meeting scheduled for January 13, 1982 was postponed until January 20 due to the bad, cold weather.

Our meeting was called to order by 1st Vice President Jerry Hessler after the Pledge to our Flag led by 2nd Vice President Julius Zella.

We had the roll call of officers and the reading of the minutes by Secretary Vlasta Machann.

Then the meeting was turned over to President Dan Berry and continued with reports of officers and committees, including other business.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Our next meeting will be held February 10; we would like to

see more members present!

The dance held Saturday, January 30 was very well-attended by a good crowd. Our dance was hosted by Brother Herbert and Sister Evelyn Kimmons, who sold tickets and took care of the details to make this a very good dance; music was furnished by Dan 'n' the Boys, a good band with a mixture of good polkas, waltzes, country/western, etc. (dancing music).

This will be my report for this week; I will write more next week.

By now most of you should have our dance schedule; it is in the Vestnik, also.

The Board of Trustees gave their report and appointed the following committees: Entertainment—Jerry Tomastik, Bar—Vernie May, Kitchen — Gloria Pustka, Reporter —Darlene Sefcik, Parliamentarian—Louis Driska.

Members on the Board of Trustees are: Rae Lisenbe, Jerry Tomastik, Dwayne Sefcik, Louis Driska and Vernie May. Bar Chairman Wilbert Ram gave his report and stated the lodge purchased a new flag. Ticket Chairman Frances Love gave her report. Jerry Tornastik, Entertainment Chairman, reported the dance schedules through June have been printed and the State Royalty will be held September 18. Kitchen Chairman Wanetta Ram also gave her report.

President Lisenbe appointed Dorothy Lisenbe, Louise Cox and Walter Jezek to the Audit Committee.

The lodge will have a social Friday, February 5, beginning at 7 p.m. The ladies are asked to bring vegetables, salad or dessert; the lodge will furnish the main dish, tea and coffee. All members are invited.

A special thank you to all officers, committee chairmen, Board of Trustees, and members for all the wonderful work they performed in helping our lodge to be a success the past year. When our group met January 26 for the first practice of 1982 twentytwo members were present. We, who sang, can say it was worth our time getting together, again. We, too, encourage all singers to be present Tuesday, February 7 to "indulge" in this musical, spiritlifting act.

Annie Jakubec accompanied us on the piano. She is our musical

dire4or and because Henry Janacek's mother is seriously ill, he and Helen were unable to attend. He accompanies the choral group on accordion; we pray for God's blessing in their time of need.

At the meeting, which followed, it was decided to postpone the election of officers until February 7, and providing most members will be there.

Should there be inclement weather on the date stated above (as was the case January 12), the date of the next practice is February 23.

Some activities for the future were brought to the attention of those present, and these will be set with specific dates as time and nicer weather come our way.

We welcome anyone who enjoys singing, especially group singing.

A couple of these innovations will be implemented after we have our Youth Leaders' Retreat on April 17th & 18th. One of these items will involve a monthly Vestnik project starting in the month of May this year, with points earned to be effective with the new youth year. on June 1st. Watch the Vestnik issues during the month of May. The other innovation will involve a specific youth club activity for every month of the year starting June 1st of this year. These have been formulated and planned here and will be passed on to the DYCs and youth leaders at our retreat on April 17th & 18th. All of these projects will earn points for the youth club members. Seymour and Bomarton Youth Clubs Enjoy Party December 6, 1981

DISTRICT II SKATING PARTY DATE SET First of all I want to wish each of you and your families a happy, healthy and prosperous new year 1982. As we start our activities for the new year, we hope it will be a beneficial year for our SPJST and we hope each of our youth will devote their time to attend each of the activities that will be planned for them on the local, district and state levels.

The first district-wide activity for 1982 is our Valentine Skating Party which has become an annual affair due to the extra good attendance we have had in the past. This skating party will be held Sunday.

February 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Skate Haven in Temple on North 31st Street just north of Temple High School.

All District II SPJST youth members are invited to this skating party and may bring a friend. Please ask your friends to join your Youth Club.

Door prizes will be awarded and the admission will be paid from the District II funds. Please plan to attend.

The Youth Clubs are asked to prepare a short youth program for this spring District II meeting. We hope you will mark your calendar and make plans to join us at the Elgin Lodge No. 18, March 21.

Our YAD date is also set, it will be held July 11 at Lodge No. 177 in Academy. The camp dates in the youth section of the Vestnik are tentative and have not yet been verified as exact, but we should be getting this verification in the near future. The exact details of district and statewide youth leiders' seminars will also be available in the near future, so read your Vestnik and stay informed of all of the upcoming activities.

NEWS FROM EL CAMPO LODGE NO. 50 YC The youth of El Campo Lodge No. 50 met January 18, 1982 at the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary at 8 p.m.

The meeting was opened by Kim Vanek. The Pledge to the Flag was led by Veronica Bartos.

Melissa Brandt gave the treasury report and collected dues.

We discussed what to do for Valentine entertainment next month; each youth is asked to bring a Valentine candy for up to 50 cents to be exchanged between the youth members; also each youth will bring a box or bag decorated for Valentine or a homemade Valentine with a poem in it. We also discussed other new business topics.

Mothers present were Mrs. Anna Bartos, Mrs. Josephine Brandt, Mrs. Rita Vanek and Mrs. Vlasta Bartos.

After the meeting the youth members played social games which they enjoyed.

Our next meeting will be held February 15 at 6:30 p.m.

WACO LODGE NO. 66 YC Dear Readers, We began our past meeting at 2 p.m. January 17. President Karen Shelton called the meeting to order and Larry Brem led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The secretary read the register and also the minutes of the past meeting. There were no corrections or additions, so the minutes were approved as read.

We had several correspondences.

The treasurer gave her report and everything is well.

For our February meeting we will have a contest for Valentine's Day in ages 6 to 12 will make Valentine cards, and ages 13 to 17 will make Valentine boxes stuffed with goodies; both age groups will be judged and prizes will be given, the prizes will be given away as door prizes to the mother lodge.

February 2nd we planned to go bowling at TSTI Bowling Lanes at 7 p.m.

Congratulations to our new Youth Leader Barbara Brem and her Assistant Kay Owen.

For the next meeting Janice Stanislav will bring the cake and Kevin Owen will bring the game.

She was born February 26, 1902, in Burleson County in the San Antonio Prairie community, the daughter of Steve and Frances Kutej Dancak.

Mrs. Luedke was married to Edward Oscar Luedke February 16, 1939 in Caldwell. She and her husband lived in the San Antonio Prairie and Deanville community, where they farmed and ranched. She was a member of the Brethren Church in Dime Box and the SPJST Lodge.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Edward Oscar Luedke on July 26, 1975; and by two brothers, Adolph and Alfred Dancak.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. John (Julia) Schumacher of Caldwell, six nieces and three nephews.

Pallbearers were Aldon Dancak, Odell D. Dancak, C. V. Boehme, Raymond R. Prazak, Leroy Botkin and Raymond J. Prazak.

We, the Resolution Committee, in behalf of all the members of Ennis Lodge No. 25, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother CLINTON POWELL, who died January 2, 1982 in Ennis Community Hospital after a long illness.

He was born 28 March 1924 in Sherman, the son of B.K. and Lillian (Hooker) Powell. In 1935; he came to Ennis and in 1937 moved to Dallas where he attended Forrest Avenue High School. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942-1945. After his discharge he returned to Ennis and in 1952 he founded the Powell Machine Works.

Brother Powell was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, the Chism-Landers Post of the American Legion of Ennis, and SPJST Lodge No 25.

Surviving him are one daughter, Mrs. Rex (Jarman Powell) Hall; one grandchild, Christina Rexann Hall, all of Deming, New Mexico; parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. K. Powell of Ennis; three brothers, Harold of Houston, Miller of Ennis and Warren of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. J. T. Steward of Hutchins and Mrs. C. E. Sledge of Kerrville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born August 1, 1902 in the San Antonio Prairie Community in Burleson County the daughter of the late Joe and Rosalie Sebesta Dusek.

She grew up in the San Antonio Prairie community and attended South Western State Teachers College at San Marcos. She taught school for several years teaching at San Antonio Prairie, Snook, and Lyons. She retired in 1942. She was married to Ed Philips August 8, 1931, in Caldwel/. They lived in Lyons until her retirement when they moved to Pasadena, Texas, and returned to Caldwell for the past 10 years. She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Caldwell and an active member in the United Methodist Church Women. She was a member of the SPJST Lodge No 186 of Caldwell.

She is survived by her husband, Ed G. Philips of Caldwell; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were B. B. Duewall, R. J. LeBlanc, M.E. Swenson, Raymond 0. Williams, Walter Whaley and Kenneth B. Clark.

The last rites for Brother Hruska, a retired merchant of theePark Community, were held at 10:30 a.m., December 5, 1981, at the Koenig Funeral Home Chapel of La Grange, with Rev. H. E. Beseda of the Austin Brethren Church officiating. Interment was in the La Grange City Cemetery.

He was born in the Ross Prairie Community near Ellinger August 15, 1896, to the late Thomas and Anna Havlik Hruska. He and Frances Zabcik of the Ocker Community were married January 9, 1921, and were lifetime residents of Fayette County. He was a former Justice of Peace of Precinct 2 in Fayette County. He was a former mayor of the City of Fayetteville. He was a member of the Fayetteville Brethren Church, and the. Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Edith Rek; and one son, Leroy Hruska. Also son-in-law, Joe Rek and daughter-in-law, Mary Helen Hruska; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

His wife died in 1974 and he was preceded in death by all his brothers and sisters. His last brother died only twelve days before.

The Texas Department of Health's film library has 4,269 prints available for loan free of charge to responsible groups and individuals in the state.

"I would like to first of all thank you for being in existence," read the handwritten note from the Plano school teacher to the film library.

The film library cited by the teacher is located in Austin and is one of the largest libraries of health education films in the nation. More than 35,000 bookings are expected during 1981, according to Ernest A. Grottke, who supervises the state health department's free-loan service.

Films are available for loan to all responsible groups and individuals within the state. There is no charge other than a prepayment for return mailing and insurance.

Every year four million people in Texas are exposed to practical health messages through the library's 957 film titles. Multiple copies of many films are available, so that 4,169 prints are available to the public. About 25 subjects are in Spanish.

"The film library is supported by tax money, and this is the reason we want to urge people to make use of this great resource. But because of the large amount of daily bookings we receive, people shouldn't be too surprised if a certain fill 4 isn't already checked out to someone else."

Because of the large volume of bookings, requests should be made at least 10 days prior to showing.

Requests may be submitted six months in advance. The films are all 16mm with sound, and most are in color. All films are cleaned and inspected before being mailed out.

There are some 40 categories of films on such diverse subjects as: Accident Prevention, Adolescence, Drugs and Narcotics, Food Hygiene, Immunization, Sanitation, School Health, Sex Education, Smoking and Health, and Venereal Disease.

The state's school children are the chief beneficiaries of the films.

Grottke said about 80 percent of the films are booked by public school systems across the state. Letters from teachers explain why this is so.

"I want to thank you and the other staff in the film library for the service you render to schools in the lending of films," a teacher from the Andrews Independent School District wrote. "The film library adds to my meager efforts and I am sure many other educators in our state share my feelings."

A biology teacher in the Killeen Independent School District wrote, "I really do appreciate your efforts, interest and also your cooperation — you have helped me in my teaching."

Other organizations, such as church and youth groups, use the films to support programs. For example, a group might want to study the hazards associated with drug abuse or smoking. They will show the film, and then have some (Continued on Page 15)

Nasledkem krute zimy a snehu, schfize Siciho krouzku, ktera mela byt oclbyvana 14. ledna byla odlokna o tyden pozdeji na 21. ledna. Schuzi zahajila, sestra ptedsedkyne za ptitomnosti 21 elenek a panove jako hoste byli: Tupy, Vrla, Jureik a Joe a Vilem Houdek. Postradaly jsme vSechny sestry ktere z jistych ptiein nemohly byt mezi nami. Pfeeten byl listek od sestry Annie Hejnove v kterem podekovala krou2ku za, darek k vanocin.

Sestra Vivian Vranova, podekovala za penelity darek, kdyi byla v nemocnici.

Sestra Albie Nesudova zhotovila peknou petinku a darovala krouiku jako dvetni cenu. Petinku ziskala sestra Annastizie Jureikoval.

ProSila se deka krou'Zku na kterou yrSek zhotovila nak obetava, sestra Olga Ewing. Deku kroukk daruje "Junior Sokol" ke zpenekni.
