ALSO SEE BACK PAGE. *** Speaking of dancing history reveals that dancing is the oldest and liveliest of the arts. Men in all countries and in all times have expressed their feelings in rhythm and body movement. It's a known fact that our ancestors left pictures of writings which told of their dances.

Persons who study these records have found out why these people of ancient times danced and how they danced.

It's a fact that the dance is the language of the body. It draws people together in their thoughts and feelings. A dancer can communicate any subject and any idea to his audience.

A dance is a physical activity, so that everyone may take part in it or it may be entirely personal to the dancer; also, as in poetry and song, a dance may be in any style or form which may be funny or sad. It some times tells a story or merely describes an idea.

Usually there are many reasons for dancing. Youngsters dance because of the joy they feel; their healthy bodies will not be quiet.

Much of our dancing today is for the sake of companionship. There are also persons who dance to find relief from the sameness of everyday life.

The dance reaches its most beautiful form with those who treat it as an art. Most artists dance to give beauty and inspiration to others. To most people dancing has been called the mother of the other arts.

Throughout the ages, the dancing body has inspired the musician, the sculptor and the painter. It is also known that drama of most countries started in their dances. The beginnings of music have been traced to the dance. The first music was merely a rhythm for the early dances. Perhaps it was a chanting voice, or the beat of a drum, the sound of two sticks together, or the clapping of hands.

Scientists believe that the earliest records of people dancing were cave paintings found in northern Spain, which were drawn approximately 50,000 years ago. In those days the cave people couldn't write therefore, they left pictures of their activities that tells an interesting story of their way of life.

Then as time passed on there was a development of dancing by the Egyptians about 2200 B.C. They acquired their dances from the peasant or working class of people.

Records indicate that some of the religious dances had acrobatic movements. Somehow along the way these dances lost their meaning and were performed only for exhibition.

The Greek dancing is known to originate from its religion. Most of the Greek writings about their

dancing have been lost. They learned about their ancient dances from sculpture and vase-paintings.

Specially trained performers gave educational and acrobatic dances.

Public festivals featured ball games in dance form. In fact there was once a Greek saying that the best dancer was the best fighter.

Among the Romans it is know that they added little new material to their dances, however, the Romans did spread their power throughout the Mediterranean World. Rome became important as a place where the dances of other nations were combined. History tells us that, in Asia Minor and Egypt, the Romans founded the art of pantomime. Pantomime is know acting without speech. Rome developed the pantomime dance to a high degree.

During the Middle Ages people saw the growth of social dancing and the rise of the dancing master, or teacher. Although they were not permitted to dance on stages, the common people had a wonderful time in their folk dances. On holidays they danced for fun alone.

Then they forgot the meanings of their dances, and out of these dances developed the so-called social dances. Eventually, in time, the nobles also began to dance. They changed the simple dances of the common people into elaborate affairs. They dressed up in brilliant and expensive costumes, and danced at court before the king and queen.

The folk dancers had twirled happily in the carol, a circular dance. As the dancing began to spread more and more in the country, the nobles also decided to start new creations, called danza; these were supposedly danced in couples or by men or ladies alone. The social dances became more intricate and difficult, that dancing masters were needed to teach the new difficult steps.

In 1500 brought again the refreshing influence of the common people.

A new liveliness took the place of the stately dances of the Middle Ages. Italy danced the pavan, a stately ceremonial dance, and the galliard, known as a vivacious leaping dance.

During the 1600's, dancing lost much of its grace and charm. The light and hurried courante became stately and formal. After the 1650 year, the style changed again.

Elegance and gracefulness became the new tone, so to speak. Gentle men bowed and ladies curtsied politely. Toes were pointed "just so, so," and steps were small and light.

Some of the dances introduced were minuet, the bouree and the passepied.

Another newcomer to the ballroom included the gavotte. All of these showed great elegance.

Later on in the 1600's England's country dances came into style. Of these, the contredanse and the square dances are still popular.

During the 1700's brought the new German waltz, which is still today, one of the most popular of all dance steps. The waltz brought democracy, simplicity, and naturalness to ballroom dancing; and because it was so simple to learn, dancing masters lost their popularity.

The 1800's featured new dances which were taken from the common people. The galop and the polka were of Czech origin, and the mazurka was Polish. There were

dances developed for couples in the SUPREME LO1GE early 1800's; one of these was the quadrille, which was somewhat like the old English square dances and was popular for over a hundred years.

Then in the 1900's came a great change in ballroom dancing. The young people found the waltz tiresome, so they turned to the group dances of the North American Creole or to the dance of the South American countries. The Brazilian people broke up the waltz pattern of turns and slides. In 1900 people began to dance the one-step and the To All Concerned: Based on recent actions of the turkey trot. Saturday, March 6, 1982 SUPREME LODGE BUILDING, TEMPLE, TEXAS 520 NORTH MAIN (Across from the Post Office at the corner of North Main and French) All sections will meet in various areas of the Home Office Building.

Schedule for all sections is as follows: 10 A.M. to 10:45 — Session 15-minute break 11 to 11:45 - Session 12 noon to 12:45 - Session 1 p.m. - noon meal (courtesy Supreme Lodge) At Lodge 47, Seaton - 8 miles east of Temple on Hwy. 53 (Section pictures will also be taken during noon hour) 2 p.m. — Session 3 p.m. — Joint Session CONDUCTED BY SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS MAKE A SPECIAL EFFORT TO BE THERE; YOU AND YOUR LODGE WILL BENEFIT BY IT (See accompanying article for details) —Supreme Lodge, SPJST 1-35, the next exit after you pass the Adams Avenue Exit is the Nugent Avenue Exit. Take that exit, proceed to Nugent Avenue for about half a mile and cross over 1-35 to the left and then take the service road on the west side of 1-35 back to Holiday Inn. For those coming into Temple from the north on 1-35, take Exit 303, which is the Nugent Avenue Exit, and go approximately one-half mile to the Holiday Inn. Those coming into Temple on Hwy. 36 from the west or south, and on Hwys. 95 and 53, the above directions should suffice, except that you will probably utilize South 1st and Adams Ave. coming into Temple, the latter being the main east-west artery through town.

Adams runs into 1-35.

Directions to the Home Office: For those of you who have never been to the Home Office, it is located at 520 North Main, which runs north and south through Temple. We are situated across (but not directly across) from the main Post Office and you will see a prominent sign "SPJST Fraternal Life Insurance" on North Main Street and three "lollipop" signs on North 1st Street, however, entrance into our parking lots is only from Main Street.

(Central Avenue divides Temple north and south and Main Street divides it east and west.) There are virtually no one-way streets in Temple. There should be plenty of parking space available in our adjoining lots; if not, additional parking will be available on the parking lot of Texas Bank on 1st Street, which is just across the street west from the Supreme Lodge Building, and entrance to these spaces may be made from either North 1st Street or from North Third Street, the next street west of

and parallel to 1st. We do not advise on-street parking on either Main or 1st Streets.

Those of you coming to the workshops from the South on 1-35, take the Adams Avenue Exit and go east, turn left on Main Street and go about 5 blocks to the Home Office Building at the corner of North Main and French. Those of you coming in from the north on 1-35 should take Exit 303 on the north edge of town and then follow the North 3rd Street signs, come approximately one and one-quarter miles to the second red light, which is French Avenue. Make a left on French and go 2 blocks to North Main and make a right into the parking lots of the Supreme Lodge Building.

The highway to Star Hall is a direct route and you should be able to make it in the 15 minutes allotted between the last session and the start of the meal there at 1 p.m.

These workshops held in previous years have proven to be mutually beneficial, but of course, you have to attend to get anything out of them. I am sorry to say that some of the lodges have never sent representatives. We are scheduling the workshops a little earlier this year so as not to conflict with the miloplanting season. Sessions will deal primarily with lodge procedures and administration. Youth work or insurance per se will not be covered since these two areas are adequately covered in district and state seminars and training classes.

"Having a lodge system with ritualistic work." The more efficient our lodges are, the better we are insuring and guaranteeing our future as a Fraternal Benefit Society. The United States Internal Revenue Code specifies two primary requisites for a Fraternal Benefit Society: "a) Must operate on the lodge system, and b) Provide for the payment of life, sick, accident or other benefits to members or their dependents."

Thus we see the specific reference to a "lodge system" and it is through the lodge system that we must operate and improve our services. It behooves

Friendship Club Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends, The D/FW-Colleyvillearea fared better than the rest of the state recently, when a wave of biting cold and snow swept through Texas.

Today, Editor Rudy Sefcikstated on his Sunday Radio program that the city of West made National Recog­ nition with 161/2 to 17 inches of snow.

It was indeed a great satisfaction to read about the people in West who opened up their places for the stranded travelers and for the many kind deeds that were done to motorists whowere snowbound.

Naturally, our bitter cold was mild compared to -26° in Chicago when I talked to my son, Tony and wife,Kathy, wholive there.

The weather did not dampen the spirits of a group of Polka dancers from Fort Worth and a similar group from Dallas, who had a toe-tapping time at the SPJST Lodge No. 25 in Ennis to the music of Al Grebnick from Schyler, Nebraska. Many of these same people will dance to the above orchestra in several of our Texas cities, while the band is on its Texas tour.

The Friendship Club had their January 6th meeting in a record high temperature of 79°F. All we Texans need to do is wait for a couple of days and we will have spring-liketemperatures!

Twenty-one members were present; so were five guests.

The birthday members were Eva Dockery and Frank Kovar.

Due to building construction changes, the February 3rd meeting might have to convene in the St. Thomas Schoolbasement.

The February hostesses will be Mrs. Gertrude Johnson and Mrs. Vernon Prichard.

Our next meeting is on the 3rd of February, if the weather permits.

Ft. Worth Lodge No.154 Sets February 14 Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Did you all survive the cold weather? We, in Fort Worth, were very lucky with the heavy snow by­ passing us, although the youngsters were disappointed.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Sister Millie Kubala and all the family on the loss of her husband.Brother Rudolph Kubala.

Brother W. D. (Dub)Renfro will have surgery tomorrow (January 20th) and Brother Emil Milan is undergoing tests. We want to wish them good reports and get well soon!

Benny and I did make it to Seymour, Texas to attend the funeral of Brother Bedrie Pavlicek, but didn't get to spend an extra day or two after hearing the weather reports and came on in that evening to beat the ice.

I have no other news, so I'll see you at our next meeting Sunday, February 14; weather permitting.

News

It has been some time since a report came from our lodge. We wish to offer a belated Happy New Year to the Supreme Lodge and to all other members.

At our meeting of December 6, 1981, we had our election of officers for the year 1982. Re-elected were Mike Ahlstrom, president; Mrs. Ella Arnold, vice-president; Adolf Motal, financial secretary; Mrs. Adele Donalson, secretary. Newly-elected to the office of treasurer was Mrs. Evelyn Horelka.

Lodge No 32 held its Christmas Dinner December 6th at the Victoria Community Center. 100 members, their families and guests enjoyed a dinner of smoked turkey and all the trimmings. After the dinner, the officers for the year 1982 were installed by Matt S. Vanek, director of District VI. January 6th we held our first meeting of the new year. It was decided that we want to hold our annual Czech Festival in June and Matt Vanek was to check on the dates available at the Community Center. The lodge is still trying to obtain land on which to build our lodge hall. A report by the Land Committee was made by Matt Vanek. The committee consists of Matt Vanek, Alfred Horelka and Mrs. Katherine Wokaty.

A Christmas greeting from Vestnik Editor R. J. Sefcik and family was shown and read to the members present.

At that time it was noted that there is a great need for more homebaked bread and home-canned goods for the Country Store at the Festival. A menu for the Festival will also have to be decided on at a later date.

Door prizes were won by Valeria Motal, adult division and by Sheryl Ahlstrom, children's division. After the meeting adjourned delicious refreshments were served by Mrs. Kathy Ahlstrom.

The next meeting will be February 3rd (Wednesday) at 8 p.m. at Citizens National Bank. All members are invited to this and all other meetings.

Houston Lodge No. 142 Officers Installed

Dear Members:

President Larry Pflughaupt called the meeting to order at 7:32 p.m. Flag Bearer Lynn Pflughaupt presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which, the members stood in silence and tribute to deceased members, Lonnie Pat Adams, Anna Kilnar, Mary Alice Schulz and Willie A. Sefcik.

Secretary Clara Broz read the minutes of the December meeting which were approved as read and then read all correspondence. After reading a list of 12 applications for insurance, 1 social member and three transfers, she made a motion that they be accepted, seconded and passed.

All December and Annual reports were read and approved.

All 1982 Officers, Board of Trustees, Sub-Committees and Committees were introduced.

Sister Mary Kosut reported 39 hours and $34.00 in expense as charity work for December and 1,264 hours of volunteer work by members for November, 1,183 hours for December; and 14,022 hours for the year.

Sister Evelyn Vornsand reported the Choral Club rehearsal every 4th Wednesday with the Concert Orchestra.

Members reported sick were Brother Ed Kadlecek, Sister Vlasta Stasta and Bessie Vasula.

District V President Tillie Helmcamp announced the District V Spring Meeting to be the 2nd Sunday in March at Lodge 142.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 110 members present. "Happy Birthday" was sung to members having birthdays and a list of anniversaries was read. Door prize winners were Sisters Irma Zucha and Marian Kadlecek and Brother Arnold Spencer with special Liberty Savings prize winner Brother L. A. Mikes. Refreshments were donated

by Sister Irma and Brother Joe Zucha.

Our next monthly meeting will be held February 18th, 1982 at 7:30 p.m. with a supper before the meeting at 6:30 p.m. Stew will be furnished by the lodge and members are asked to bring a salad or dessert.

Sister Henrietta Veselka gave the Youth Club's annual report. Our youth members had a very good year. We thanked Youth Leader Henrietta Veselka and her assistant, Gene, for all their kind deeds and good leadership.

New members for the month were: Carol J. Cerny, Charles E. Cerny, Cindy L. Zapalac, Daniel L. Zapalac; the sales representatives were Brother Sidon Tumis who sold 2 policies, and Brother Robt. Kieschnick, also 2.

Capsule attendance prize drawing went to Marcella Garza; sorry she was absent, we will draw again for $50 next month.

The lucky winner of the $5 consolation prize went to Val Stein.

Activities Planned By Dallas Lodge No. 84

Our meeting, last Monday, opened with Sister Coker leading the group in the Pledge to our flag.

Sister Salac read the minutes of the last meeting; they were approved. Correspondence was acknowledged.

President Ondrusek asked District III Director Sid Pokladnik to explain the reason for the refund checks and how the amounts were derived. Brother Sid was glad to oblige.

Entertainment Chairman Coker gave his report, also the yearly financial report.

Thanks were given to the many members who helped during the year.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr gave her yearly financial report; she also said the monthly meetings for the youth will be held at skating parties each month.

House Committeeman Salac asked for help January 31 at 9 a.m. to cut the trees on the parking lot; also February 10 (Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. floor polishing, kitchen, bar and decorating room clean-up; now you circle your calendars and help, OK? Brother Salac also thanked Brother Emil Petr for turning on the heaters during the coldest day to prevent freeze damage.

The Czech Culture Society gave no report today.

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council officers will meet January 19, to complete plans for the coming year as reported by Council President Carlyn Ondrusek.

Special Committee Sister Coker gave her yearly financial report and thanked all for a successful year Softball and the season opener was one of the things discussed by Brother Ben Jarma. No opening date was given but he is busy attending with park department planners and a schedule is forth-coming.

Congratulations cards were sent to the Randy Zabojniks (boy); Jim Novaks (boy); and Robert Adamciks (girl). Get-well cards to Brother Dean Hagar and to Jodie Mikula and wife down Ennis way (both were hospitalized last week).

Auditor Brother Gilbert Kalich said the financial books are in very good shape.

Betsy Wolfe is our new member for this month, having been signed up by Sales Representative Emil Petr.

A motion was made to meet with custodian Edwin and Sister Annie Petr by Lodge No 84 officers; these two hard-working members keep our lodge shining.

February 20 there will be a joint effort by Lodge No. 183, Fort Worth German-American Club, and MidCities German-American Club to have a German "Faschings Ball" or "Masquerade Party" as we would call it in the United States. The SPJST Deerest Lodge 188 of Centerville met Monday, January 18, 1982 for the monthly lodge meeting, at 7:30 p.m.

President Dr. A. M. Easterling, Jr. called the meeting to order and Secretary Evelyn Schwab read the minutes of the November and December meetings which were approved as read.

Treasurer Diane Hovvle gave the treasurer's report. A Bar report was presented. Door Chairman J. D. "Chili" Hines presented his report.

All reports were accepted as presented.

Financial Secretary Jacqueie Wakefield presented the names of three new members for approval: Joe L. Harris, Hope Cannon and Vicki Lynn Hardee. All three were approved as members.

Secretary Wakefield read a letter from the Supreme Lodge stating that the rebate from the Supreme Lodge was made.

New officers and trustees were installed and the meeting adjourned.

January 13, 1982 Sister Pearl Hanka opened the meeting with an article on "How to Kill an Organization."

The minutes were read by Sister Rosalee Kostom and were approved.

Sister Lillie Spies read the financial report for the month of

December and also gave an annual report for 1981.

Val Moore donated a beautiful quilt to the Birthday Club and a motion was made to sell it on Splash Day; motion carried.

Birthday Club Sisters will have a bake sale on Anniversary Day. Sister Mary Kosut, our sunshine lady, reported sending get-well cards to Amos Kadlecek, Ed Kadlecek, Linda Bricker, Albina Drawe and Susan Schenburn. Ed Kadlecek was in the hospital but we hope he is home by now and feeling better.

The hostesses for January were: Alice Bily, Emily Bily, Della Miksch and Mary Tilich.

My apology to Sister Della Kadlecek for not including her name with the officers who were elected in January for 1982; she is vice president.

My thanks to Sister Rita Alexander for taking notes for me. I was in San Antonio with my daughter, Doris Fay Froehlich who had surgery Wednesday.

The meeting closed with a birthday tribute to our Birthday Club Sisters who had birthdays in January; namely, Mary Tilich, Ima Lero, Marie Pokluda, Margaret Bohac, Geraldine Holzek and Florena Taake.

•■••■•■ Letter to the Editor Czech deserves curriculum

To the Editor: The University of Houston announced its million dollar expansion last week with a media blitz on television and the newspapers. Their slogan on their public service announcements is "meeting the needs of an urban community". With all of this money and goodwill one would think that the Spanish and other language departments would announce to the Czech instructor that Czech language and cultural classes would be cut arbitrarily. But no . . . Mr. Souchek (Czech lecturer) had to find out by students calling him and asking him why Czech wasn't offered in the class schedule.

All the proper paperwork was submitted at the end of the spring semester and all deadlines were met.

Then there is the case of the $25,000 gift offered to the University of Houston for scholarships in the study of the Czech language. A woman who was interested in Czech studies and also interested in a tax break, offered the 25 grand. Again Mr. Souchek did all of the paperwork, to make it happen. The Spanish and other language departments deliberately stalled the procedure for so long, our benefactor gave the money to another university out of sheer frustration. The other university had no

problem accepting the money. With these two incidents I can only conclude that the Spanish and other languages department of the University of Houston is deliberately discriminating against the Texas-Czech ethnic group in a racist manner. Dr. Harold Raley is the head of this department.

I propose that the University of Houston and the "other language department" seriously consider keeping Czech classes in the academic program. 10 per cent of the people of Texas are of Czech heritage and Texas Czechs have been taxpayers for over 100 years.

Texas-Czechs have contributed a lot and ask for so little in return. Just offer the classes in the class schedule and if enough students show up there will be a class. And if not enough show up there won't be a class. Deliberately keeping Czech out of the class schedule is not fair play. I don't think that the TexasCzech community is trying to create a bloated Czech bureaucracy with a multibillion budget. I feel that the University of Houston should maintain a high level of academic standards by offering Czech language and Czech culture classes.

I also feel that the University of Houston should strive to get all departments accredited that are not SO.

There are Czech classes all over the state of Texas in junior college and high school levels. These students will need university level classes when they enter university.

Both language and culture courses are necessary to preserve and record our history as Texas Czechs.

Czech is the third most spoken language in the state of Texas and should be kept in the University of Houston's curriculum.

Dr. Frank Malina Memorial Meeting Dr. Frank Malina, co-founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, grew up in Brenham, Texas. This scientist, statesman, and artist is an inspiration to all Texas Czechs. We as a community can honor his memory by meeting together to bring Texas Czech culture back to the University of Houston, where it belongs.

From the Youth Leaders LODGE 47 YOUTH CLUB MAKES PLANS FOR THE NEW YEAR Well, the New Year has started off with a slip and a slide, socialwise. Due to the cold and the ice, our social scheduled for Tuesday, January 12th has been rescheduled for Tuesday, January 26th. We still plan to see a movie at Cinema VI in Temple. I will be in touch with those of you who are eligible to attend this month's social; also, I would like to deeply emphasize that if you would like to attend the socials and receive your points, you MUST attend the monthly meetings!

Our February meeting is set for Sunday the 7th at 2 p.m. I would like to encourage each and every one of you to attend. We will have a special guest and a special Valentine craft is planned for you; also, during this meeting, several interesting and enjoyable socials and activities will be discussed.

TAITON LODGE NO. 30 YC Dear Vestnik Readers, Our SPJST Lodge No. 30 in Taiton will hold both meetings Sunday, February 7, 1982 at the Taiton Hall. The adult group will have their monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m.; then our youth group will hold our meeting at 2:30 p.m.

Our theme is on Valentines. We will make Valentines for our senior citizens in our local rest home. It gives us a lot of pleasure to cheer up others and our senior citizens deserve all the cheer we can give them.

How did everyone like our winter weather? I am sure everyone will be glad for summer to come; I know I will be because I had to miss school due to the bad weather we had; buses couldn't go! Also everything in my mom's garden froze including -SPJSToats for my geese; it was very cold here, too.

The minutes were then read by Secretary Melissa Macalik in which we discussed old business of Christmas Party and new business of Valentines and coming events. After the minutes were approved, Treasurer Joyce Trojacek read the treasurer's report.

Our next meeting will be held February 14 at 2 p.m.

For our Valentine's party each member should decorate a T-shirt with a Valentine design.

TAITON LODGE NO. 30 YC Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club will hold their regular monthly meeting February 7, at 2:30 p.m. at Taiton Community Center. The adult meeting starts at 1:30 p.m.

Our contest for February will be on Valentine's Day. Members in ages 6 through 9 will make a Valentine card; 10 to 12 shall make a Valentine's Day mobile; 13 to 17 to make up a poem.

The members are also reminded to make a Valentine card with candy in it; it will be taken to the nursing home for the grandpas and grandmas.

Mrs. Albert Kresta and Mrs. Lad Srubar are on the refreshments assignment for February.

WORTH LODGE NO. 92 YC ACTIVITIES HELD

Dear Readers, We had our regular meeting last Sunday. There were five people present.

We have been earning money from our dances to decorate our meeting room.

Our Youth Leaders Gordan and Cheryl Hubenak bought new bean bag chairs.

We are also going to use some of the money to go to Chuckee Cheeses Pizza Time Theatre after our next meeting. We would like to invite any youth interested to come to our meetings.

Roy Ira Bell, owner of Quick Stop in Marquez and The Rusty Bucket in Jewett was killed in a one-car accident on Highway 79 last Tuesday night. Roy, age 36, and his wife Peggy, have lived in Marquez for 6 years. Roy, was involved in ranching activities, real estate and was the elected Constable of Marquez. He was an active member of the SPJST Deerest Lodge 188 in Centerville.

S6rvices were held at the SPJST Lodge 188, at 2 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 1982, with Lenton Speer officiating. Interment followed in the Parker Cemetery.

Bell was born March 8, 1945, in Leon County to Ernest and Lina Johnson Bell.

Roy Bell is survived by his wife, Peggy, of Marquez; two daughters, Trenda and Glenda Bell of Centerville; five brothers, Wendell Bell of Centerville, Weldon Bell of Dallas, Frank Bell of Centerville, Cecil Bell of Oakwood and Jerry Bell of Leona; three sisters, Mayme Ellis of Centerville, Mary Joe Leathers of Centerville and Evie Langley of New Caney, Texas; and mother, Mrs. Lina Bell of Centerville.

Pallbearers were Larry Dorman, Wayne Neyland, Noal Ray Goolsby, John Alton Haynie, Elmer Ward, David Mathews, Robert Ware and Josh McCarty.

Honorary pallbearers were Red Buchanan, Cooper Sullivan, Jim Hill, James 0. Hill, Julian Wakefield, Fred Duncan and Marcus Dorman.

Mr. Urbanovsky was born October 7, 1906, in Burleson County, the son of John J. and Julia (Jakubik) Urbanovsky. He had been a lifetime resident of Burleson County. He was a farmer in the Cooks Point Community.

He was a member of the Cooks Point Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor.

He was married to Albina Sebesta November 20, 1934, in Nelsonville, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Albina Urbanovsky of Caldwell; five sons, John Henry Urbanovsky and Eugene R. Urbanovsky, both of Milano, Leonard B. Urbanovsky and Ernest L. Urbanovsky, both of Houston and Alton W. Urbanovsky of Bryan; two daughters, Mrs. Anton (Joann) Schrader of Caldwell and Carol J. Urbanovsky of Houston; 16 grandchildren; six brothers and three sisters.

Pallbearers were Glen Chmelar, Hubert Polansky, Donnie Urbanovsky, Edmond Cedidla, Bobby Urbanovsky and Kervin Ray Urbanovsky.

Honorary pallbearers were Louis Urbanovsky, Lamar Urbanovsky, A. E. Dippel, William McSwain, Albert J. Surovik, Jerry Weaver and Walter Rosenkranz.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday in the Cooks Point Brethren Church with the pastor,

Rev. Norman Haisler, and the Rev. Henry E. Beseda, pastor of the Austin Brethren Church, officiating.

Interment was in the Cooks Point Brethren Church Cemetery.

A homemaker, she had lived in Burleson County and in Caldwell all her life. She was a member of the Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Jesse Richard Courtney of Caldwell; sons, Dariael Jene Courtney of Caldwell, Richard Courtney and daughter-in-law, Judy Courtney of Caldwell; daughter, Josephine Weichert and son-in-law, Sam Weichert of Caldwell; six grandchildren, Sherrie, Mark and Tammy Courtney, and Samuel, Jr., Lisa and Loretta Weichert all of Caldwell; and her mother, Mrs. Annie Lacina of Caldwell.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 4, in PhillipsLuckey Chapel in Caldwell with the Rev. Robert Mahoney, pastor of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Somerville, officiating. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

He was born October 17, 1909 in the Providence community in Burleson County, the son of John and Albina (Ondrasek) Navratil. He grew up in Burleson County, and moved to College Station, Texas and lived there 35 years.

Brother Navratil was a chef in Sbisa Hall Food Service Department at Texas A&M University for 32 years. He retired in 1971 and moved to Snook. He had been a resident of

the Leisure Lodge Nursing Center in Caldwell since October, 1981.

Brother Navratil was a member of the Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor.

He is survived by three sisters, Stacy Kornegay and Mrs. Bill (Valasta) Helms of Caldwell and Angelina Scambray of Houston.

Funeral services for Brother Navratil were held at 3 p.m.

December 29, in Phillips-Luckey Chapel in Caldwell with the Rev. Henry E. Beseda, pastor of the Austin Brethren Church, officiating.

Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

He was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor.

Brother Sefcik was married to Lexie Otradovsky January 21, 1939 in Galveston.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lexie Sefcik of Caldwell; two daughters, Mrs. Frances Hargrove of Texas City and Mrs. Mary Ann Phillips of Galveston; three granddaughters; brothers, John Sefcik and George Sefcik, both of Caldwell; and two sisters, Mrs. Albina Sefcik and Mrs. Lydia Stefka of Caldwell, two brothers, Joe and Frank Sefcik and two sisters, Vlasta Herrmann and Frances Hanacik preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Brother Sefcik were held at 2 p.m. January 2, 1982 in the New Tabor Brethren Church with the pastors, Rev. Albert Michalik and Rev. Larry Koslovsky officiating. Interment was in the New Tabor Church Cemetery.

Burial was in the Bomarton Catholic Cemetery.

Prayer of the faithful was read by grandson, Craig Lawrence, and an appropriate scriptural reading by grandson, Bedrich W. Pavlicek III, in behalf of their deceased grandfather Bedrich.

Brother Pavlicek was born May 19, 1898 in Engle, Texas, then moved to Rowena as a child, moved to Bomarton, Texas in 1907. In February, 1917 he became a member of our Lodge No. 77 in Bomarton.

He married Hermina (Hattie) Marak in 1920 in Bomarton at St. John's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Hattie Pavlicek of Seymour; one son, Bedrich W. Pavlicek, Jr., of Fort Worth; one daughter, Patricia Coker of Seymour; two sisters, Mrs. Roy (Ella) Richeson and Mrs. Irene Francis, both of Seymour; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were five grandsons, Bedrich W. Pavlicek III, Charles Lawrence, Chris Lawrence, Craig Lawrence, Chad Lawrence; and nephew, George Marak.

Brother Pavlicek attended college at Southwestern in San Marcos, in 1918 he also attended Texas Christian University in i Fort Worth where he took his R.O.T.C. He began his career as a teacher in the Mary's Creek School in Baylor County; after that he became a United States Postal Service Carrier, continued in that position for 46 years, and retired in September 30, 1961.

Bedrich was the organist at the St. John's Catholic Church in Bomarton for over 60 years, until moving to Seymour in 1974.

They also celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary November 25, 1981.

He was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 77 for 65 years; also served on the SPJST By-Law Committee several years and an honorary member of Knights of Columbus and KJT. His cheerful attitude will be greatly missed.

KUBALA, who passed away in a local hospital Tuesday, January 12, 1982, at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his son, Emil Kubala.

He was born August 22, 1898 in Granger, Texas. He married the former Millie Kaderko November 19, 1919. He was a retired carpenter.

His survivors include his wife, Millie Kubala of Fort Worth; daugh-

FROM CESAT

The organization CESAT (the Czech Ex Students Association of Texas) looks forward to its increased activity in preserving our Czech heritage in the incoming year of 1982.

What is CESAT and what PROGRAM has this CzechAmerican organization?

To answer above questions and to appeal to the concerned people of our background to join its ethnic effort, CESAT published (last year) its informative brochure in Czech and in English. This condensed brochure consists of CESAT's brief history with short explanation of this organization's purpose and its goals.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CESAT The Czech Ex Students Association of Texas with the Czech name of Spolek Byvalych Ceskych Studentu Statu Texasu, has its beginning in 1909 at the University of Texas, where several students of Czech background formed the Cechie Club to study, perpetuate and promote the Czech language and culture here in the southern United States.

Through the effort of this club, Czech was put on the curriculum at the University of Texas in 1915.

Although there was an interruption

in the teaching, of Czech during the years 1923-27, the Cechie Club was instrumental in re-establishing Czech language courses at UT in January of 1927, and Czech has been taught there successfully ever since.

There were other Czech-American organizations such as the University Club and The Association of Czech Ex-Students of Texas established in the twenties at Austin, both of which merged with Cechie Club and adopted the present name of CESAT in 1939. This organization flourished or, at least, held its own until 1954, when it became dormant largely due to the accelerated assimilation caused by apathy towards ethnic matters, however, during the mentioned dormancy of CESAT, Czech language continued to be taught at the University of Texas, A&M University and a few other schools, such as Rogers High School.

The establishment of Czech at the University of Houston in 1973 and the annual summer programs at Charles University of Prague in Czechoslovakia for students of Czech from Texas began in the same year, helped to revive CESAT in 1974. CESAT thus again became active in its work according to the original principles of the Cechie Club of 1909.

THE PURPOSE OF CESAT CESAT continues in the tradition of the Cechie Club to perpetuate and promote the Czech language and Czech culture. CESAT strives to arrange for Czech language courses wherever possible in this state and helps to coordinate financial support from Czech-American organizations for the teaching of Czech in Texas.

CESAT, together with its suborganization Texaska Matice Vyssiho Vzdelani (The Texas Council of Higher Education), now as in the past, is responsible for setting up loans of financial support to qualified students of Czech descent.

In the bygone era of the twenties it certainly was not necessary to stress to the loan applicants their Czech heritage and require a knowledge of Czech, as those students knew Czech well and the loans were meant to help them in any studies towards a university degree. As the applicants' ability to communicate in Czech has drastically changed in the last 40 years, however, the Texas Council of Higher Education, (Texaska Matice Vyssiho Vzdelani) a suborganization of CESAT, now requires that the prospective applicants either be enrolled or intend to enroll in a Czech course and show an interest in Czech ethnic affairs.

Additional information about the loans and the person to contact for an application form can be obtained from CESAT members.

CESAT sets, from time to time, grants for worthy Czech-American causes (for example: the Czechs in Texas Symposium, in October of 1978) and is in the process of establishing scholarships for outstanding Czech-American students dedicated to our ethnic heritage.

GOALS OF CESAT A most important goal CESAT must strive for is the increased ethnic awareness of our people in Texas. To accomplish this awareness CESAT needs, through proper education, to increase the interest of our young generations.

Thus, while giving encouragement and support to the existing Czech programs at universities, colleges, schools and at Czech-American halls, CESAT hopes to foster the teaching of Czech in other Czech communities and resume Czech teaching at several towns where it was taught previously. CESAT wants to recruit dedicated members of the Czech ethnic group in order to achieve a true renaissance of Czech language and culture in Texas.

Contrary to the belief that CESAT is an organization for college ex-students of Czech only, this association is accepting the membership of any CzechAmericans interested in Czech heritage and the preservation of the Czech language in Texas.

In order to guide our CzechAmerican youth towards its increased ethnic awareness CESAT is now offering a contest for high school students proficient in written and spoken Czech language wherever Czech is taught at high school level across the state. The selection of the eligible contestants should be done by the teachers of Czech at each individual school and these teachers are requested to send the names, addresses and other pertinent information of the prospective entries of this contest to Mr. W. E. Souchek, Secretary of CESAT, 5103 Willowbend, Houston, Texas 77035, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The selected high school students would then be required to take a written and verbal test and compose a short article in Czech. Mr. W. E. Souchek is delegated by CESAT to judge the results and select the winner of this contest. The winner will receive $150.00 scholarship as a show of appreciation of this organization and a $25.00 award from HATFL. Both awards will be presented to the best high school student proficient in the Czech language, during or after the meeting of HATFL at the University of Houston Branch, Clear Lake City Campus on Saturday 17th of April.

HATFL are the initials of the Houston Area Teachers of Foreign Languages Association which consists of almost 470 members teaching Spanish, German, French, Latin, Russian and Czech. Our secretary of CESAT, Mr. W. E. Souchek, is presently chair person of the HATLF's Slavic Section.

This year's conference will feature authorities in the fields of loss control, construction safety, industrial hygiene, human factors research and law. They will address a variety of subjects, with special emphasis on industrial safety and health, public and private sector, environmental exposures, effects of judicial decisions, professional development and certification, and ergonomics (matching machine design to human characteristics).

Items of special interest will be discussions on the future of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), the Love Canal incident, hazardous waste disposal, confined space entry, manual materials handling, exposure to formaldehyde and other chemicals, and drug abuse in the workplace, says Nelson.

Speakers will include a number of government and university officials as well as chemical company executives, health and safety experts, and an oil company attorney.

Marinades COLLEGE STATION — Turn less tender, less expensive cuts of meat or game into flavorful, more tender meat with marinades, says a foods and nutrition specialist, Mary K. Sweeten.

Marinades are usually a combination of an acid — vinegar, lemon or lime juice, tomato juice, sauce or catsup, liquor, wine or fruit juice — and cooking oil with herbs and spices.

Favorite herbs and spices include oregano, dill, fresh garlic pod, pepper, cilantro, caraway seeds, sesame seeds or other herbs, she explains.

Mrs. Sweeten is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the Texas A&M University System.

To use marinades, cover the meat with the marinade and leave covered in the refrigerator at least 24 hours prior to cooking the meat.

Then broil, roast or braise the meat, the specialist instructs.

Here are some suggested marinades for favorite beef cuts or deer meat.

BASIC MARINADE FOR BEEF OR DEER

Garlic powder Pepper Meat tenderizer 2 cups dry red wine* 1/4 cup soy sauce 1/3 cup salad oil 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 bay leaf Sprinkle meat with garlic powder, pepper and meat tenderizer. Prick meat with sharp-tined fork to help tenderizer work.

Mix all other ingredients.

Place meat in non-metal container and cover with marinade. Let stand in refrigerator overnight.

This should make a thick-sliced huck roast perfectly acceptable for grilling. *Wine vinegar or regular --irc gar also results in a very sL, i'acory product.

Wednesday, January 27, 1982 — VRSTNI.K/11 STEAK MARINADE 1 cup Burgundy 1 tablespoon chopped parsley 1 bay leaf 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 medium onion, chopped 1/2 clove garlic, crushed 1/4 teaspoon thyme 2 pounds sirloin, T-bone, club or tenderloin, or deer steak, 1'h inches thick Mix wine, onion, parsley, garlic, bay leaf, thyme and salt in a shallow glass dish.

Place steak in marinade, and refrigerate overnight.

Remove steak from dish and broil four inches from heat about nine minutes per side for medium doneness. Or charcoal-broil steaks.

Heat and strain marinade for a meat sauce.

Serves four.

MARINATED ROUND STEAK 1 cup salad oil 1 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup wine vinegar 1/2 cup minced onion 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard Combine all ingredients, pour over steak or deer meat in a flat dish. Cover dish and leave in refrigerator overnight.

To grill meat, remove from marinade and drain well. Use marinade to baste meat as it cooks.

Yields about two and threefourths cups.

FLANK STEAK 2 pounds flank steak or deer meat 1/4 cup salad oil 1/4 cup wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon thyme 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon sugar Score steak. Place steak in shallow glass baking dish.

Mix remaining ingredients to make marinade. Pour over steak.

Refrigerate overnight.

Grill and broil on each side to desired doneness.

For medium rare, broil 10 minutes on the first side and five minutes on the second side.

SAUERBRATEN 4 pounds chuck roast, top round or rump roast OR, 3 pounds deer meat salt and pepper 2 cups cider vinegar 1 medium onion, chopped 2 cups red wine 1 large carrot, thinly sliced 1 green pepper 1 bunch celery leaves, top only 3 bay leaves 2 teaspoons marjoram 3 cloves garlic, crushed 2 teaspoons rosemary 2 teaspoons thyme 1 teaspoon sweet basil 1/4 teaspoon ginger 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup sour cream 1/3 cup crushed ginger snaps Salt and pepper meat and place in marinade of vinegar, wine, spices and vegetables. Cover and refrigerate 4-5 days, turning twice daily.

Remove meat from marinade, drain and pat dry. Brown in butter.

Add marinade and simmer 3-4 hours until tender.

Remove meat to platter. Stir

crushed ginger snaps and sour cream into gravy and stir until thick and smooth. Do not boil.

Serve with sliced meat. Serves 1012.

Fish Farmers To Hold Annual Confab COLLEGE STATION-Texas fish farmers are becoming more diversified in their operations in an effort to boost profits. What they are doing and how they can take advantage of additional opportunities will be highlighted at the upcoming Texas Fish Farming Conference at Texas A&M University Jan. 27-29.

A session on "Business Decisions in Catfish Farming" should be of special interest to fish farmers, points out Dr. Ken Johnson, fish disease specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

This session will deal with price selling, market selection and ways to give fish farmers a competitive edge.

Other sessions during the threeday conference will deal with redfish production, crawfish farming, growing threadfin shad as a forage fish, a general overview of fish farming in Texas, and certain management practices, such as controlling pond seepage and weeds.

Held in conjunction with the conference will be the annual meeting of the Fish Farmers of Texas.

"This is the main event each year for Texas fish farmers," points out Johnson. "They will have an opportunity to be in contact with many of the people involved in Texas aquaculture and to hear what other fish farmers are doing to improve their operations. This year we are featuring fish farmers in panel discussions after each of the main sessions of the program."

The annual program is based on input from fish farmers and offers something for those just entering the fish farming business as well as for seasoned veterans, notes Johnson.

on the programs you are to attend so you can prepare your family as to what to expect. Your family will tend to enjoy the presentation if they understand what will be seen or heard. Many High Schools schedule plays and operettas at reasonable prices.

Involve your family in the magnificent variety of arts, such as ballet, operas or musicals. You can usually find listings of all activities in your local weekend newspaper.

ZOO DAY: Few things are more fun than a day at the Zoo with children. Check with your local Zoo as to hours and fees.

Many Zoos have FREE DAYS, and a picnic area where you could enjoy a basket lunch with your family. Take along a snapshot or movie camera and capture the fascinated and amazed looks on the childrens faces as they pose with the animals. A visit to the Zoo is a real treat, not only for the children, but also for the adults, and truly an educational experience for all.

These Family Day suggestions are being presented by the Family Life Committee of the National Fraternal Congress of America so that family members can better understand why the family is so important to each of them individually. Advice To Farmers Will Be Based on Weather Future

Agricultural producers of the future will be better able to cope with Texas' highly variable weather when a hightechnology advisory system is completed by scientists with Texas A&M University.

Present inadequate weather information, collected primarily for aircraft, is poorly suited to the needs of farmers and ranchers. Crop and range production risks are great and yields are highly variable.

Scientists with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station working with several departments at Texas A&M, the USDA, and the National Weather Service, are developing an effective system to collect weather information for Texas, interpret it, and provide useful and timely production advisories.

"While this won't improve the weather, it should cut production risks and increase economic returns," according to Dr. G. F. Arkin, Experiment Station scientist at Temple.

Automatic equipment for weather information gathering is being studied. Only the best will be selected for installation across the State.

In addition, alternative means of collection of weather information (for example, radar data for precipitation qstimates) are bein g examined, according to Dr. William Dugas, agricuLtural meteorologist at Temple.

Meanwhile, crop growth "models" are being de-

veloped that can be used with weather and climate information for predictive purposes.

These -models" are really detailed production systems that contain every factor that goes into crop or livestock production.

By incorporating crop growth and weather models into economic models, more realistic economic assessment can be made of production systems.

This systems approach will provide a more realistic assessment of the feasibility of new, efficient water-use systems in areas of limited water availability where usual irrigation techniques are not suitable.

Imagine in the future, the automatic machines continuously collecting weather information across the state and feeding it into computers for both long and short-range analysis.

The weather analysis will then be compared, with incredible swiftness, to the livestock and crop production models in the computers for advice to producers on which crop to plant, irrigation duration and frequency, insect control, fertilization amount, harvesting advice, marketing options, and a multitude of other types of information.

The information base in the computers will be refined as research by Experiment Station scientists develops additional data.

This won't take all the risk out of production by our food and fiber producers but it will change the odds and enable farmers and ranchers to adjust production practices for the best chance of success, based on climate and weather events.

Scientists involved in developing this expanded research area, Weather Information for Crop Production, say it will result in improved information to producers for decision making, reduce production risks, improve water use efficiency, and improve crop yields.

All of us, as consumers, will benefit from a more secure supply of additional food and fiber.

(K. H. Borovskf se narodil v roce 1821, zerntel v roce 1856). Po nastupu reakce v roce 1849 rozvinul HayReek Loj proti rakouske vlade a cirkevnimu tmatstvi. Byl za to souzen a internovan v Brixenu (18511855). K.H. Borovskf se tak stal hrdinou a symbolem boje za svododu.

1) The numeral jeden declines like demonstrative pronoun ten: Nom. Gen. Dat. Ace. Loc. Instr.

3) The numerals pet and higher till devadesat deve't have, except for N/A, only one other form ending in -i, which is used for G, D, L, I cases. Note 1: With numerals jeden, dva, when object is not mentioned, we can use either musculine (jeden, dva, dvacet jeden, dvacet dva, padesat jeden, sedesat dva) or feminine form (jedna, d ye, dvacet jedna, dvacet dye, padesat jedna, sedesat d y e). But when the numeral appears with its noun, the gender must agree. E.g.: jeden student, jedna studentka, dvacet jeden student, dvacet jedna studentka, tticet dva studenti, tficet d ye studentky. But most frequent is genitive with all numerals higher than four (dvacet jedna studentir, dvacet dva studentek). Note 2: When the numeral accompanying a noun is used in other than nominative and accusative case, the following noun is put into that particular case. E.g.: Skolni rok trva deset mesicii (=G. pl.). Stalo se to pied deseti mesici (= I. pl.).

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT TO: All Lodge Financial Secretaries, Sales Representatives and any Interested SPJST Members have received many inquiries on how the automated reporting system, which is now in place at the Home Office, will effect the local lodge financial secretaries and the sales representatives.

Although most financial secretaries will attend the Officers' Workshops on March 6, many have requested additional in-depth information as to the "do's and don'ts" in the new billing system.

The sales representatives on the other hand will be paid in a manner which is much more beneficial to them and it is important for them to understand how their commissions will be paid.

Because we anticipate many questions from the sales representatives in this area, we feel that this should be done outside the framework of a regularly scheduled Insurance Sales Seminar conducted by the State Field Managers.

To assist those who want to know more fully, the new procedures, Vice President Gebala and Financial Secretary Mikulas will conduct briefings at the following locations: We,
