`Editor COMMENTS The month of January is always expected to bring inclement weather of ice, sleet and sometimes snow. Indeed this year, on January 11th and 12th, mother nature dropped 16 1/2 inches of snow in West (McLennan County). The 10-degree weather which later dropped to 6 degrees caused many motorists on I35 North in Central Texas near the City of West to become stranded in the snow: at one time there were 500 to 600 cars stuck in the white stuff.

Meanwhile the Department of Public Safety came to their rescue to help provide shelter while their stalled automobiles could be moved.

The motorists were then taken to the VFW Hall and other places in West where they were taken care of until they were permitted to continue their travel. The DPS and West volunteers are commended for their humanity! We hope to be able to get the Vestnik out on time!

Most of the places of business and 3chools on all levels remained closed due to hazardous driving. We are certain the school children enjoyed the time off, (three and four days) while some studied for finals and others enjoyed building snowmen and having snowball fights.

There was no mail delivery of any kind from Wednesday noon to Thursday, 6 p.m. We'll put in over *** With all the holiday season cele brating in the past, the members of the Society now need to begin concentrating on their responsibilities, which they accepted in the annual meetings. We, as a whole, can rest assured that they are individuals capable of leading their lodges in this all important 85th year of fraternalism. To those of you involved in our Society, we wish to express our admiration and best wishes for a very successful future with the SPJST. *** When income tax creeps upon us we sometimes wonder who is Uncle Sam. At this season, when thoughts turn to income tax adjustments, and kindred subjects, it may be well to reflect briefly upon the genesis and nature of this Government which we support, sometimes a bit resentful as to its affiliation not properly spent for more medical technology.

Uncle Sam isn't the Army, the Wage-Price Stabilization Board, or the Tax Collector. He isn't the President, or the Man in the Street.

But he is a lot of people, living and dead -- and something that lives in them.

He is the fellow who thumbed his nose at the redcoats and dumped a boatload of tea into Boston Harbor . . . He is the homely, unhappy boy from Illinois who wrote the Gettysburg Address, the puny lad from New York who grew up to be the Colonel of the Rough Riders.

He is a dreamer who first made a boat propel itself by steam, the visionary who drove a pair of rails through Indian country into California. He is. Ford and Kettering — men with strong hands and tough,

clever brains, who have made Free Enterprise a name to frighten little dictators.

Uncle Sam isn't any one man. He is a spirit, a will, a way of doing things that marks us Americans and our country.... He is a distillation of all the exploring purpose that moved our ancestors to the unexplored New World. *** Today we wish to pass on additional 1981 Tax Forms information that will uncover some key changes to some of you: Naturally, there is only one tax table, for all taxpayers regardless of filing status. The income figure in the table — less than $20,000 for singles and $40,000 for joint returns in 1980 -- has been raised for 1981 to less than $50,000 for all.

The maximum number for exemptions has been eliminated. Instead, you subtract $1,000 for each exemption before using the tax table.

The 5 percent tax-rate cut, which took effect on October 1, has been built into the table. But if your taxable income is $50,000 or higher, you must do your own computations on the cut Persons with $400 or more in interest or dividends during the past year — and who formerly had to use the long Form 1040 for such income — can use the short Form 1040A this year, since it now has a second page to show this Retired taxpayers, who in the past had to attach Schedule "E" to their returns to show pension and annuity income, will be able now to show all pension and annuity income on the front page of Form 1040.

In the 1981 return only, you can deduct interest and dividends up to $200 for singles and $400 for joint returns. If you received interest from an allsavers certificate in 1981, you will have to report it on Schedule "B" for 1040 users or page 2 of the 1040A to claim the exclusion from your income.

The Postal Service no longer requires dual postage when first class mail is attached to or enclosed in a package sent second, third or fourth class. This means, for example, that a letter included with a parcel no longer needs a stamp of its own. Now instead, it is treated as though it is part of the parcel. *** The following information may interest our members, readers and including our youth, so, if some of you are poetically inclined or love to write poetry, you may wish to act according to the information furnished below. Report of Directors Directors' Message To The Membership of the SPJST; During the audit for the year 1981 conducted on January 11, 1982, the directors are pleased to report an excellent progress in the operation of the Home Office and management of business operations of our Society.

During the past year many of the Society's records were converted successfully to computerized operations. Due to the hard work of the officers and employees in our Home Office, the conversion is progressing beyond everyone's expectation. Thus far, the cost of the computer hardware and software is about one-half of the amount allocated by our last convention.

Our Sales people registered a net increase of o v er $5,000,000.00 in newly issued insurance which is a net increase of 25% over the previous year, which gives us insurance in force $157,000,000. This shows that our sales force is working diligently with our underwriting department in, placing new insurance on our books.

We urge all the members to review the financial statement, audited by the Board of Directors, which shows highlights of the Society's operation and progress during the year 1981. The overall gain in assets in 1981 over the previous year is an indication of sound management.

May we wish the membership of our Society a Healthy and Prosperous 1982 year.

Ta'iton Lodge Re-elects Officers Dear Editor of the Vestnik, Officers of the Supreme Lodge, and SPJST Membership: I want to wish all a very happy and prosperous New Year, 1982!

By saying good-bye to the 1983 year, we will say good year for ug and our lodge of Talton No. 30; our meetings were all well-attended and we have several new members.

Our Youth Club is doing well with the leadership of Mrs. Jerome Dorotik; the club has been very active and, of course, all of you know that District VI Queen is from Taiton Youth Club. Our adult members enjoy working with the youth; in return, they serve us refreshments after meetings and invite us to their summer picnic and their Christmas Party.

We adults had our Christmas dinner on the first Sunday of December with a good dinner of baked turkey, dressing and all the traditional trimmings. After the meal we had our annual meeting, election of officers, reading of the Rules and Regulations. The same officers were re-elected. They are: President—Mary Mrnustik, Vice President —Mrs. W. J. Duckett, Secretary — Mrs. Anthony Dorotik, Financial-Secretary — Mrs. Jerome Dorotik, Treasurer —Mrs. Pete Merta; and Resolution Committee includes: Mrs. J. W. Krutilek, Cyril Mrnustik and Mrs. Lad Srubar.

The books were audited by Mrs.

We had no deaths in our lodge during 1981 and I hope the same for the new year; we will start preparing for YAD, which will be held in Taiton. We are happy to have the youth of the district.

Lodge No. 35 Announces February 14 Meeting Elk

Dear Members: Sunday, January 10, 1982 the lodge meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

President Breitkreutz then asked the members to stand for a moment of silence for our departed member, Sister Lydia Vicha.

Minutes of the December meeting were read by our new secretary, Sister Rosemarie Banik; they were approved as read.

Brother Henry Breitkreutz gave the treasurer's report and then handed the books to the new treasurer, Brother Eddie Ray Banik.

Youth Leader Rosemarie Banik reported that eleven members were present and there will be a cake walk February 6. She asked all who had birthdays in January to come on the stage and we sang "Happy Birthday" to Ronald and Donald Steinke, Darrin Banik, Missy Steinke, Rudolph Zalman, Joe Tepe and Adolph Beralek.

The committees gave their reports; namely: Kitchen—Rosemarie Banik, Entertainment — Albert Banik, and Refreshments— Vernon Wood.

The Sunshine Committee Report: On the sick list were Mrs. Jewel York, Mary Beralek, and Mrs. Willie Pavelka will enter Hillcrest Hospital January 23 for surgery. We hope you will get well soon.

The Sunshine Committee for 1982 will be: Edna Tepe, Velma Clemons and Ruby Pavelka. If anyone knows of someone who is sick, please call anyone of the three named persons.

The Entertainment Committee for 1982 are: Barbara Pavelka, Gloria Pavelka and Dorothy Banik.

Door prizes were won by Tracy Breitkreutz — youth, and Dorothy Banik — adult.

A delicious stew supper was served and, with the cold weather, it really hit the spot.

Our next meeting will be held February 14 at 2:30 p.m. We would like to see all of you young people at the meeting because we need all of you.

Dear Members and Friends: Our January meeting was called to order by outgoing President Alfred Klusacek. Flagbearers Althea Young and Nora Skrabanek led us in the Pledge. The members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased brother, Frank Popelka. May his soul rest in peace.

The meeting was then turned over to Brother .'Leonard Mikeska, secretary-treasurer from Supreme Lodge. He thanked all the retiring officers for a job well done in 1981. He then installed all new officers and board members charging them with the responsibilities of their individual duties to the members of Lodge No. 47 and to the SPJST. He congratulated each one with a handshake; the remainder of the meeting was carried on by newly-installed President Jerry Pechal.

Dolores Skrabanek, our secretary, read the roll call of officers and SRs. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as read. Correspondence consisted of a thank you note from the family of Esta Mae Hieronymus family thanking the lodge for a memorial made in her memory. May her soul rest in eternal peace; also a thank you note from the Railroad and Pioneer Museum for a monetary donation.

A special thank you to Dorothy Pechal for a job well-done with the New Year's reservations, also all the

workert for the Christmas dinner were recognized by being asked to rise along with Adeline aiid Willie Kohutek, chairman, and Charlie and Leah Marek, co-chairmen.

Leonard Mikeska talked to the members briefly explaining the computer and its functions and asking the members to bear with them. We know they are doing a good job at Headquarters and the computer is the "in" thing now. It just takes a little getting used to.

Shirley Patterson gave a brief report as outgoing youth leader.

Dorothy Morris reported that Choral rehearsals will go on in January and in case of inclement weather, rehearsal will be cancelled. As I am writing this letter, the temperature is 4 degrees and forecast is for rain, sleet and snow. We have had so much nice weather that we really shouldn't complain but, brrr-, it is cold!

Alfred L. Klusacek, board secretary, read the minutes from the last board meeting. They were acted on as necessary.

Appointed to the Grievance Committee are: Dan Balusek, Emil Hejl, Anton Vitek, Anton Motl and Alfred Klusacek. Appointed to the Maintenance Committee are: Woodrow Marek, J. D. Chlapek, Ed Mihatsch, Eugene Hejl and Charlie Marek. Planning Committee members are: Charlie Marek, Woodrow Marek, Jerry Pechal, Elmer Skrabanek and J. D. Chlapek.

Resolution Committee members are: Adeline Kohutek, Dorothy Pechal and Martha Klusacek. Appointed to the Investigating Committee are: Frankie Klinkovsky, Vallie Zavodny and Francis Hejl.

The members voted not to have a public picnic this year and rather continue with our Saturday night dances.

We had a lot of birthdays for January. They are: Alice Banning, Edwin Chlapek, Irma Klinkovsky, Anton Motl, Lucy Mihatsch, Mary Shenkir, Edward Skrabanek, Paula Stuteville, Floyd Stuteville, Georgie Sodek, Dolores Skrabanek, Agnes Trampota, Julie Vitek and Robert Vasicek. Happy Birthday to all of you.

Happy Anniversary to Leon and Vallie Zavodny, Jerry and Agnes Trampota, and Ed and Lillie Skrabanek.

Lodge Prepares For Annual Chili Supper Needville

Dear Members and. Friends: Our first meeting of the year January 10, 1982 was called to order

by President Charlie Matcek promptly at 3 p.m.

Sister Aleene Zwahr led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and we remained standing in silence as a tribute to our deceased member, Brother Cecil Baker.

All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes and also a card of thanks from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II for the fruit we brought to them during the Holiday Season.

Financial Secretary Aleene Zwahr gave her report. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendal gave her report.

Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel reported on the activities at the hall for the month and then gave his financial report.

Our new member for the month is John David Petrusek. We welcome you, John, and hope you can attend our meetings.

Brother Alvin Zemanek was very sick but is back at the Rest Home. We were sorry to hear Brother Arnold Franek had been at the hospital and now is a resident at the Leisure Lodge at Rosenberg; also Sharon Blinka was in the hospital but is at home doing well and Sister Sophie Baethe had eye surgery at the Columbus Eye Clinic last week and also is at home now and doing fine. May all of you continue to improve.

Our gratitude goes out to Lodge No. 88 Choral Club of Houston who so graciously take time out during the Christmas season and entertain our residents here at our local rest home with their singing and, oh, how the residents enjoyed the bags of fruit and gifts you brought them! Not only the residents enjoyed the singing but also all the visitors. May the Lord bless you for your kindness.

Our annual chili supper will be held February 9, serving beginning at 5 p.m. There will be plenty of good homemade pastries, as usual and coffee or tea to go with your chili.

Everyone is invited to come. All of our ladies are asked to bring your favorite pastry, please.

Refund checks were handed out and Sister Winniefred Susan won the attendance prize.

From Lodge No. 88

The first monthly lodge meeting in 1982, held Monday, January 11 was fairly-attended by faithful members facing the freezing weather; as usual, we enjoyed a delicious pot-luck dinner before our meeting served at 6:30 p.m.

This time the lodge furnished the main dish of delicious fried fish; the side dishes and dessert were supplied by the attending members. It is very thoughtful of everyone to bring enough to serve their attending family with a vegetable dish or dessert, and, of course, second helpings may be had as long as there is food on the table. In the meeting the members voted 100 percent to continue this friendly atmosphere in 1982. The main dish, coffee and tea, will be furnished by the lodge.

January is the month annual reports are given by the chairman of each committee, and all were favorable: Dances, Bar, Kitchen, Social Night, Birthday Club Sisters, and the Blue Room. To compensate the workers for their efforts the assembly voted on three workers' parties in 1982 to be given by the lodge. These parties are always a nice and friendly gathering and the workers are looking forward to enjoy them.

Members on the sick list were remembered: Sister Bessie Vasula, after treatments, is at home now.

Brother Ed Kadlecek is still in the Heights Hospital and Louise, his wife, stays with him constantly. Brother Frank Dvorak is doing exceptionally well, he painted several pictures, which is his hobby. Sister Vlasta Stasta, after, two strokes, is doing very well; we miss you. Sister Vlasta never missed any affair at the lodge when her health permitted; now she lives with her daughter, Lillian Orth.

Lillian also used to be quite active years ago in the Hlahol Dramatic Club and was very good. Sister Elsie (Dvorak) Kadera of McKinney, Texas, after a successful operation in Dallas on her knee and hip, is recuperating at home and doing very good. Elsie also used to participate in programs and Czech plays since she was five years old when she had the star part in one of the Czech plays. We miss all these good and faithful members who have no choice but to stay away.

Only one wedding anniversary was announced and that was for Harry and Lillian Finn celebrating their 51 years of wedding bliss January 14.

Both are active; Sister Lillian serves as parliamentarian for Lodge No. 88 and served as English reporter for the Birthday Club the past several years, also is a SPJST sales representative and Brother Harry helps wherever needed. To both, many healthy and happy years to come! For the refreshments after the meeting, Brother and Sister Joe Zucha picked up the tab for the refreshments.

January 8, Sister Tillie Helmcamp invited her sister, Viola Cox, and her husband, Harley, to have dinner with her not mentioning that it is to cele brate Viola's birthday. For this affair, Tillie invited the family of 12 members to surprise Viola, but Sister Alice and her husband, Andy Braikovich, had the time wrong and arrived too early, so when Viola and Harley arrived the two had to make a disappearing act and hide in the bathroom and stay in there until the rest of the family arrived at the door.

The door bell rang and Tillie asked Viola to answer the door and when she did there was her surprise; a group of her family members including the two in the bathroom and a surprise "Happy Birthday" went out to the birthday celebrant, Viola; how many? 39! Happy Birthday!

Again we bid farewell to a member of long standing. Brother W. Sefcik, age 69, who passed away January 5, 1982, had retired after 40 years of employment at SP Railroad. Service was held at the Heights Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Friday, January 8 with Rev. Phil Kennemer officiating; he was laid to rest in the Forest Park Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Marvina Sefcik of Houston; daughters, Mildred Coats of Montgomery, Texas and Linda Keding; son, Doug Sefcik; brother, Joe G. Sefcik, all of Houston, Texas; sisters, Ida Ryan of Bryan, Texas, Henrietta Waldon of Georgia, Grace Tucker of Manor, Texas; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

We express our sincere sympathy to the surviving family. Brother Sefcik was active, in his younger days, on the Entertainment Committee, when we were located on Robbie Street, and visited here in our new location.

Olexa and lifelong resident of Houston and now retired for several years, passed away while visiting his daughters in San Louis Obispo, California. Rosary was held Thursday, January 7, 1982 at 7:30 p.m. at Earthman's Fannin Chapel with services at 10 a.m. Friday, January 8 from Queen of Peace Church with Rev. James Wilson, CSB, officiating. Interment was in Garden of Gethsemani.

Survivors are wife, Ruby Kuhn; daughters, Sister M. Damian, VI of Incarnate Word Academy, Evelyn Mathis of Houston, Doris Olexa of Beaumont, Texas, Ruby Porche and Carliss Carney of San Louis Obispo, California; sisters, Dewis Shelton and Katheline Kristinek of Houston and Marie Harris of Miami, Florida; 24 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren. May he rest in peace; we extend our sincere sympathy to the surviving family. Grandsons Bill, Michael, Robert and Jeffrey Olexa, Ken Porche, Jr., and Jim Gregory served as pallbearers.

Dear Members and Friends: With a brisk wind and 17-degrees today, it warmed up as soon as all the smiling faces came in and all chatting about our first cold spell.

Our meeting was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

Christmas and New Year Greetings were read from Sister Maria Prill and Sister Agnes and Leon Chandler.

Brother Milan thanked everyone for making the Christmas Party a success and the sisters for the goodies. Lodge Installs Officers Burleson

Our January 10th meeting was opened by Dennis Barabas. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jess Taylor. We remained standing in a minute of silence for our departed members.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read by Secretary Frances Simmank and approved as read by the fifteen members present.

Our visitors, District III Director Sid Pokladnik and Oleta Keating were welcomed.

The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor sent a very warm and grateful letter to our members for the $250 donated to them. Brother Pokladnik pointed out that we should always advertise our donations because this is one of the things that SPJST is all about.

On our sick list were George Rippin and Julius Psencik.

New members are Georgia Sells, Catherine Killough, Herbert Cunningham, Israil Vela and Oralee Vela, all adults. We welcome you into our lodge!

Dear Members: Our thirty-sixth monthly lodge meeting, followed by the installation of officers for 1982, was held Sunday, January 10.

President B. J. 1-11avaty called the meeting to order and asked Mary Ann Roznovsky to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

One officer, 2nd Vice President Robert Sill, was absent from roll call.

Despite the many telephone calls to members asking for their attendance at this meeting in order that they might witness the installation of officers, the attendance was small. The cold weather and football game were too much competition.

We want to thank Brother Sid Pokladnik for his complying to President Hlavaty's invitation to come to Arlington to attend our meeting and honor our lodge by installing the officers for this new year.

Secretary Patricia Sill read the minutes from the December meeting and, after a few monetary corrections, the minutes were approved as read.

Inez Greenlees read the treasury report and it was accepted as read.

Daniel Roznovsky gave his financial report of insurance in force, lodge dues collected for 1981 and he also read the letter explaining the computation of insurance premium checks sent ito the lodges by the Supreme Lodge. No new members were announced.

Members, some of you are delinquent in payment of your insurance premiums, please check your records; if in doubt, please give Financial Secretary Daniel Roznovsky a call at (214) 252-6763; he will be more than happy to assist you We don't want to lose any of our members!

First Vice President Lambert Pustejovsky, who is also chairman of the bar and kitchen, gave his report and it was accepted as read.

Betty Hlavaty gave the games' report; rental report and donations report; these were also accepted as read.

Fraternal donations from Lodge No 183 for 1981 totaled $1,836.53.

Recipients were: Muscular Dystrophy Association, Huntsville Prisoners, and Star House of Fort Worth, which is a drug and alcoholic rehabilitation center. We, as members of Lodge No. 183, have every right to be proud of our accomplishments in 1981.

Daniel Roznovsky reported a nice return from our New Year's Eve dance. "Henry Rejeek and His Polka Band" from Ennis will provide the music for the dance Saturday, February 13. No admission will be charged. Make plans to attend.

All the chairmen's reports were approved as.read.

Since there was no other business, the officers who will serve Lodge No. 183 for 1982 were installed by Brother Sid Pokladnik as follows: President—B. J. I am happy to report that Diane Kuyawa was released from Arling ton Memorial Hospital and was able to spend the Christmas Holidays with her family. We wish her continued improvement and hope to see her back at the lodge very soon.

Cassondra and Stephanie Pc-9z are sharing a happy evening December 24, 1981 with Great-Grandpa John Stasa in Corpus Christi.

Corpus Christi, Texas December 12, 1981, I received a Temple Daily. Telegram clipping from the president of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, Temple, Texas, Brother Nick A. Morris, under the headline: Red Ranger Plans Lively Celebration by Mike Heckman.

The picture bears four persons: Mrs. Carol Chervenka, Bernice Sebek and Louise and Jerry Zavodny.

When I was visiting Frank Poboril at Seaton 29 July 1980 with my dear daughter, Lillie, and her dear husband, John Huber from Austin, Texas, we made a visit to my nephew Jos. Blazek near the Red Ranger store. My son-in-law went to the store to make a purchase; Lillie and I stayed in the auto. Mrs. Louise Zavodny and another person came out to shake hands. From the conversation, we came to be good friends. (Mrs. Louise is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond J. Marek.)

While we lived near Buckholts, at the Bryant Station community, in the 30's, we made many family and friendly social visits with Blazeks who had a new house with large rooms and one of the rooms was empty for a dance. My dear brotherin-law, Joseph Blazek, was an expert in preparing beef or chicken barbecue. My dear sister-in-law, Agnes Blazek, (sister to my late loving wife, Albina), was a real good cook; no wonder that the yard and house was filled to capacity most of the time with people of all ages; this happened 50 years ago.

Joseph Blazek was born July 27, 1888 in Taylor, Texas and passed away 14 April 1963 at Red Ranger, Texas. Agnes Blazek, born November 15, 1882 at Seaton, Texas was the daughter of Frank and Marie Poboril. She followed her dear

huslAnd to the Seaton National Cemetery 5 July 1979. Their only son, Joe A., was born December, 1912 at Rosenberg, Texas and moved to Red Ranger 1 January 1914; he is the owner of a 45-acre farm. It is part of the 200 acres that his grandparents Poboril owned. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Poboril also owned an 80-acre farm (one of the fertile farms of black land.) (I've learned that, at some time, Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr., is living there since he married into the Hejl family.)

The clipping reminded me o? something that the same year (1906) January 12, I had immigrated from my loving birthplace, Police.

Moravia in Europe; my landing place was Galveston, Texas December 12 and Temple December 14) with my parents, Josef and Anna, also older sister, Anna and older brother, Josef, Jr. We stayed overnight in the lodging house operated by Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Krizan in Galveston.

Next day, December 13, we boarded the Santa Fe train in the middle of night and, at 4 a.m., got off the train t ecember 14, 1906 in Temple.

Red Ranger Environment In 1906 the Public Schoolhouse was built on a corner farm owned by John Zabcik and his family. It was one of several farms they owned and rented to the tenants. It was located on the road between Rogers and Zabcikville, about 21/2 miles from Zabcikville. From that schoolhouse there was a road to the west; Sefcikville and Seaton, also to the left to Stringtown and Temple. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reznicek built the business building and house and outbuilding; beside groceries he sold cold drinks including beer; a few years later Frank Fabian moved there and built a house and blacksmith shop. These two establishments were located half a mile south from the schoolhouse. It was on the property owned by Mr. and Mrs. Geistman who resided in the Cyclone community and leased to these named families. (Mr. Fr. Reznicek was a relative to my late wife, Albina, maiden name Poboril).

She attended this school in years 1910-1911; Miss Cejnar was the school teacher. Frank Reznicek was a diabetic and that shortened his middle-age life. He passed away in 1914 or 1915. Will Marek, who married Petrek's daughter, was the next owner.

At that time the Jakubik family moved from Caldwell to Red Ranger and rented a farm from the John Zabcik family. There were two sons, Henry and Emil and two daughters.

They were neighbors to Poborils.

Henry was the oldest and employed at the Zabcikville grocery and cold drinks store. He married the older daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Leshikar and purchased Marek's property. His dear wife died after they had been married only a few years. Henry married the sister of his deceased first wife. Henry Jakubik then sold this property to Mr. Raymond and Mrs. Louise Marek. If my memory serves me right, her maiden name was Luksa.

After his death, Psencik, who married Louise Marek, was the next owner and moved the buildings to the new location. Since Psencik passed away she married Jerry Zavodny.

Henry Jakubik is known to me since 1911 and, in 1919, bought the 45 acres of land: 50 percent in cul.

tivation and 50 percent in forest from my mother and brother Joseph. It was the part of the Poboril 200 acres. Henry was a goodhearted person; he assisted many people when they asked him to interpret their affairs in the courthouse and some business places.

Jos. and Frank Zavodny's parents rented a farm from Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bartek in 1907; they were my good friends.

NUMEROUS ACTIVITIES HELD BY COTTONWOOD LODGE NO 6 YC Dear Members and Friends: The Youth Club meeting was held January 3 and the attendance was pretty good for a cold Sunday.

I didn't get to write the December letter because I was too busy with Christmas projects, arranging and making preparations for the program at home and my job.

The Youth Club members made 91 coffee cans filled with cookies for the West Rest Haven residents, also made a Christmas box for the Marek family and gave money to other charities.

Wednesday, January 20, 1982 — VESTNfK/7 youngsters did a fine job with their parts in the program. We want to thank Santa Claus for visiting us. Our guests were SYD Jann Thomas; her son, and friend; our Editor Rudy and Sister Maxine Sefcik. We were very glad to have you all. We also received a letter from Brother Nick Morris who could not make the party.

I want to thank each one of you who helped me with the Christmas projects and other things, also for all the nice gifts. Thank you very much!

The Youth Club made real good on their ticket sale and also at the New Year's Eve dance food sale.

The Stanley products will end January 15, 1982 and we need to turn them in. The club members are still selling cookbooks, cards and knives; so if you need any of these items, please call the youth members or leaders.

Our club made plans to visit the West Rest Haven January 13 and there will be a hayride and wiener roast planned January 15. The members were asked to bring a friend.

TAITON LODGE NO. 30 YC PLANS MEETING Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club will hold their next meeting February 7, at 2:30 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center.

In the contest ages 6 through 9 were asked to make a Valentine card; 10-12 youth members were asked to make a mobile; and those in ages 13-17 were asked to write a Valentine poem. Everyone was also asked to make a Valentine for the rest home and bring it to the meeting. The adults will have their meeting at 1:30 p.m.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY The Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 107, Floresville, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother EMIL SVOBODA, who passed away in a local hospital Saturday, November 14, 1981, at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 9 days.

A son of the late Joseph and Barbara Svoboda, he was born January 5, 1892 in Lavaca County, moving to Wilson County at an early age. February 29, 1916, he was married to Albina Jasek in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Brother Svoboda was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 107.

Survivors include wife, Mrs. Albina Svoboda; daughter, Mrs. Troy (Elenora) Talley; son, Charles Svoboda, all of Floresville and son, Edwin Svoboda of Farmington, New Mexico; 8 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 17, 1981 at the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel, Floresville, Texas, with the Rev. S. T. Schroeder of Poth, Texas, officiating. Interment was in the Floresville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Stanford Talley, Carroll Wayne Svoboda, Dwight Roemer, Tommy Johnson, Herman Svoboda and Charles Brogg.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, in behalf of our entire membership wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother EDDIE FAUST, age 80, of Caldwell, who passed away in the Goodnight Memorial Hospital, Saturday, November 14, 1981.

Mr. Faust was born June 9, 1901, in Caldwell, the son of Paul and Marie Belga Faust. He lived in Burleson County all his life. He was a farmer in the New Tabor Community and a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor.

He was married to Katy Rychlik, November 8, 1922.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Katy Faust of Caldwell; one son, Louis Faust of Caldwell; four daughters, Mrs. Johnnie (Milady) Hyvl, Mrs. Willie (Olga) Gloyna, both of Caldwell, Mrs. Lawrence (Annie) Johnston of Lona, Mich., and Mrs. Dwight (Lydia) Bolton of Bossier City, La.; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Sanders of Caldwell.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild, his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Willie E. Gloyna, Jr., Dennis Gloyna, Raymond Jonston, Raymond A. Hyvl, Marvin B. Hyvl, David Bolton, Gene Bolton, and Alton Hyvl.

Funeral services were held November 17, 1981, in PhillipsLuckey Chapel with the Rev. Albert Michalik, pastor of the New Tabor Brethren Church, and Rev. Henry E. Beseda, pastor of the Austin Brethren Church, officiating.

Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

JOSEPH E. ALEXANDER, of Route 4, Ennis, who passed away December 27, 1981, in Ennis Community Hospital, after a lengthy illness.

Brother Alexander was born April 28, 1904 in Ennis, the son of Ralph and Emma Jane Ray Alexander. He was reared in Ennis, attended the Ennis Schools and June 30, 1929 was married to Miss Frances Brothers. After their marriage, they lived in the Rio Grande Valley and in 1939 they moved back to Ennis where he owned and operated the Alexander Grocery and Market, retiring in 1969.

Brother Alexander was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Ennis Masonic Lodge No. 369 and the SPJST Lodge No. 25.

Surviving him are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Gene (Frances) McBride of Eddy; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Fitzgerald of Dallas and Mrs. Maurine McKinney of Ennis and two grandchildren, Rusty Pecot and Miss Amy McBride, both of Eddy.

Sister Kilnar was born in Czechoslovakia July 17, 1900, and came to America in 1924. She was the wife of the late Charles Kilnar, past president of Lodge No. 88.

Sister Kilnar was a faithful and dedicated member of our lodge for many years, being very active in the Choral Club and the Hlahol Dramatic Club, where she was a good prompter in Czech plays. She will be remembered for the Czech costumes she made and the many dolls, dressed in authentic Czech costumes, that she donated to bazaars.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Her husband and son preceded her in death.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 4, at Hollywood Cemetery, with District V Director Louis Hanus officiating.

Her body was flown, to Taylor for burial after brief services.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Genevieve and Suzanne who live in Florida, and Nancy lives in Houston; also three sisters, Mary Lomberg of Nutley, New Jersey, Mildred Hebman of Taylor and Cornelia Babineck of Houston; and two brothers, Emil and George Veselka, both of Houston.

She had many friends in Houston.

Christmas Party Is Held For Crippled Children

By JOSA GWEN ADAMS Their faces displayed a sense of joyous anticipation as they walked with crutches or braces while others were carried or wheeled off the buses. They are the children of Ada Wilson's Hospital of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation who arrived Dec. 11 at the Tides Club for the annual Christmas party.

This gala is sponsored each year by the commanding officer and the E-6 Ways and Means Committee.

According to John Dear, administrator of the Ada Wilson Hospital, the party has been going on for over 20 years.

The day began when 132 children were picked up at the hospital by a number of buses and escorted by the city police to the North Gate of the Naval Air Station. Security then provided a complete tour of the base before taking them to the Tides Club. The children were greeted there by volunteers from the Key Club of Flour duff High School, members of the E-6 Ways and Means Committee, military and civilian volunteers and Capt. John E. Simpson H, commanding officer.

For some children this was not the first time they have attended the party. But for many of the children this was a new experience and their reactions varied from alarm to joyous glee.

The party got started about 1 p.m., in the main ballroom with spirited Christmas music provided

by Flour Bluff High School Stage Band. Refreshments of punch and cookies were served to the children.

Two clowns known as Mr. Buttons and Su-Su added to the happy occasion by filling the children's faces with smiles and their hands with colorful balloons.

The main highlight of this festivity was Santa's arrival at 1:30 p.m. The jolly ole man presented

They ranged from stuffed animals, toy trucks, dolls, to books and many other toys.

Volunteers lost their hearts to the children during the party. Some lost control of their emotions at the sight of the eagerness of the smiling children.

Families Sought For European and Philippine High School Students Host

1. Host Families are being sought for 25 high school students from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Spain and the Philippines for the school year 1982-83, in a program sponsored by the American Intercultural Student Exchange (AISE).

The students, age 15 through 17, will arrive in the United States in August 1982, attend the local high school, and return to their home country in late June 1983. The students, all fluent in English, have been screened by their school representatives in their home countries and have spending money and medical insurance.

Host families with small children are welcome to participate in this program. Rost families may deduct $50 per month for Income Tax purposes.

2. AISE is also seeking American high school students age 15 through 17, who would like to spend a high school year in Siveden, Norway, Finland, Germany or Spain, or participate in a five week Host Family stay in the same countries and in addition the Philippines.

DEMOCRATIC BOSS If there ever was a true Horatio Alger story of a poor boy growing up to manhood, acquiring power and wealth, such a man was Anton J. Cermak, first foreign-born Chicago mayor. Unluckily, he took office during the depression when there was great unemployment, stock market prices kept falling, and thousands of business firms declared bankruptcy.

September of 1932, only 51 of Chicago's 228 banks remained open.

Every time President Hoover said

that pro;perity was just around the corner, stock market primp sank lower. Cermak was constantly aware that city employees were not being paid and suffered hardships.

He frequently took trips to Springfield and Washington to beg for funds with which to pay city workers. He sought loans from bankers and New York financiers.

He became ill from worry and overwork trying to reduce expenditures and bring the city back to normalcy.

That didn't happen until Franklin D. Roosevelt took office and called a moratorium on all banks in the United States. When the banks reopened, the people once again gained confidence in them and in government. The stock market prices started climbing to higher levels, jobs again became available, but Cermak did not live to see this happen.

He is best remembered as the martyred mayor who had been hit by the bullet that was aimed to kill President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt. It happened February 15, 1933, in Bayfront Park, Florida.

Crowds of people were seated in hastily-erected grandstands, waiting for the President-elect to appear. Cermak was seated in the front row of the reviewing stand.

Roosevelt's open automobile drove up and the assembled people cheered loudly to show their relief that Hoover days were about to end — and that Roosevelt would bring them back to prosperity. Roosevelt stood up in his automobile and gave a short speech. Then Cermak and other officials walked to the car and exchanged a few words with the president-to-be. The chauffeur was about to start the car when gun shots rang out. They hit Cermak and four other people. As the bullet tore into Cermak's flesh he hollered out, "The President, get him away."

Amidst the tumult that broke out, the man who fired the shots was taken into custody by the police. He was not a gangster but a 33-year-old Calabrian, named Guiseppe Zangara, who had been a citizen of the United States only two years.

He said that he hated all rich, powerful men and had meant to kill the President.

Cermak was supported by two men who led him to Roosevelt's car.

Roosevelt held him in his arms as the automobile sped to the hospital.

It is not known if it was during the ride to the hospital or after arrival that Cermak said to Roosevelt, "I am glad it was me instead of you."

The bullet had penetrated Cermak's right lung and lodged into the vertebra. For awhile it appeared that he might recover, but his heart was weakened, colitis set in and pneumonia developed. His condition became serious; he sank into delirium and mumbled about the poor teachers not being paid. When he was certain that he was going to die, he said, "I will pass along happy in the feeling that the great President-elect of the United States has been spared to the American people whom I love with all the love that must be in the heart of a man who came to this country a poor immigrant baby and was allowed to go so far under the Stars and Stripes."

The first viewing of.Cermak was at his home at Lawndale where his

Czech neighbors and great crowds of people filed past his bier. For 24 hours, the body lay in state at the City Hall. It was the saddest, the most spectacular funeral that had ever taken place in Chicago.

Although it was a bitter cold day, one-half million people stood along the line of march. There were military units, veteran organizations, police on horseback, firemen, Sokols, 52 silk-hatted gentlemen, each one representing a different nationality, the Lawndale Mason Lodge, the Bohemian Odd Fellows, children from the Bohemian Orphanage and Democratic committees. The pallbearers showed Cermak's closest friends to be foreign-born which included his own Czech people. Twenty-three thousand people crowded into the Chicago Stadium to hear the eulogies given by Governor Horner, a rabbi, minister and priest.

Interment took place at the Cermak crypt in the Bohemian National Cemetery. The flower cars were piled high with floral offerings.

Cermak was born in 1873, in Kladno, Czechoslovakia. His parents, Anton and Catherine brought him to the United States at the age of one. Anton, the father, was a coal miner and the family settled in the coal mining town of Braidwood, 65 miles southwest of Chicago. The Cermaks lived in a Czech settlement in lower Braidwood. The Irish lived in upper Braidwood. Cermak went to school at a time when rural areas did not have highly educated teachers. It was probably true as Cermak said when he dropped out at the fourth grade, that he knew more than his teacher. His father taught him how to read and write Czech and it is likely that he went to a Czech language school.

Braidwood was not a town in which to acquire culture or gracious manners. But it was a town where home discipline was important and children were brought up to love one another, and to be kind to old people.

Growing up with the "battlin' Irish", Cermak learned to be tough and he acquired some of the Irish pugnaciousness. He left Braidwood when he was 16 years old and went to live with an aunt in Pilsen, a Czech community in Chicago. By the time he was 19, he owned a horse and wagon, and started a woodhauling business. When he had saved enough to marry, he chose an unassuming Catholic girl.

From the wood-hauling business, he went into real estate and became owner of a real estate firm, was President of a Building and Loan Association and held directorship of a bank. He gained power in the political arena. He built a house in the Lawndale community big enough to house his mother and father who lived with him until their deaths.

His first political office was state representative and in April, 1909, he was elected alderman of his own 12th Ward. He considered being alderman more important than state representative. He was holding two jobs but did not resign the state representative job until he was elected alderman for the second time.

Czechs in Chicago were proud of his achievements and accepted him as their leader. Cermak was against

prohibition. He represented the Wet Pressure Group in Chicago, Cook County, and the State of Illinois. He had good judgment and the ability to select public-spirited men to work with him. When being elected alderman for the fourth consecutive term, he was conducting a campaign for the office of the bailiff of the Municipal Court of Chicago. He had no previous experience as a public administrator. He won and took office, and when his term had almost ended, he was praised by the chief justice, "I have a high regard for Cermak's honesty and ability. He may be a wet politician, but he is a dry bailiff. He is a sober and twofisted official."

He was not in good health in his early forties. He had two kidney operations and after recovering, again became ill brought on by overwork. In 1918, when the United States entered into World War I, he ran for sheriff and at the same time was the busiest of the "Four-Minute Men". He gave speeches, conducted Red Cross drives and sold Liberty Bonds. He was an active member of Sokol Chicago and other Czech organizations, and President of the National Army Associations to help soldiers. He supported the Masaryk cause to free the Czechs and the Slovaks from foreign domination.

During his years as County President, he brought about a major reorganization of the Forest Preserve District. He knew how important it was to have forests encircling Chicago. He brought in a general superintendent and experienced park men to develop baseball fields, swimming pools, parking spaces, picnic areas and golf courses. Cermak's wife died November 24, 1928 and he mourned her passing, becoming ill. He went to Florida with a daughter and granddaughter to recuperate and get away for a while from the harassing job of Democratic boss of Chicago.

He was a plain man, outspoken, blunt and exerted no charm to win voters. His enemies made charges against him of having close contact with the liquor hoodlums and underworld characters, but these charges were never proved. He wanted to break up the syndicate, drive out the gangsters, and clean up crime before the 1933-34 World's Fair.

He intended to be mayor. It really wasn't too hard to beat William Hale Thompson, Republican. The people wanted to end Republicanism in Chicago. John Coughlin, called "Bathhouse John" and Michael Kenna, called "Hinky Dink" and the syndicate voted for Cermak. He died a glorious death, missed being the Chicago World's Fair mayor, but was spared breaking up the syndicate and driving out the hoodlums.

He had prepared for this formidable task by having purchased a bullet-proof vest. To perpetuate Cermak's memory, Twenty-Second Street in Chicago was changed to Cermak Road and one of the pools in the forest preserves is called Cermak Pool.

Czech-Americans erected a memorial in his honor in Bayfront Park, Florida.

1981—A Good And A Bad Year For Texas Agriculture

By Bill Braden, Communications Specialist Texas Agricultural Extension Service 1981 seemed to offer a lot of hope for Texas farmers and ranchers as the new year unveiled. Almost anything had to look good after the disastrous drought of the previous year. Producers who had managed to survive financially were ready to play their cards again in one of the biggest gambles going — agriculture.

T E LIVESTOCK PICTURE 1981 did get off to a good start, for the most part. The winter months were mild, which was a blessing to livestock producers faced with short hay supplies due to the droughtshortened 1980 crops. Then spring rains came with regularity over the state, a sign of things to come.

Grazing conditions got off to a good start over virtually all of Texas and continued throughout most of the year. Some ranchers in western areas acclaimed grazing conditions to be the best in about 20 to 25 years.

However, too much rain at times also caused problems for livestock producers. Some livestock were lost to flood waters that ravaged parts of North Central and West Central Texas, the Hill Country and the Coastal Bend in late summer and early fall. Thousand of chickens also perished in northern counties of the Coastal Bend when fall rains dumped almost 20 inches in a short time.

Some livestock also were lost due to grazing poisonous range plants in western areas. Blackleg, an infectious cattle disease, reared its ugly head again in South Texas late in the year after a long absence.

Many producers also continued to be concerned about another cattle disease — brucellosis, but one old enemy, the screwworm, was virtually absent from Texas this year.

All in all, then, the livestock picture generally was good in Texas except for one major drawback — prices. The cattle market, which was down as the new year dawned, continued on its sluggish path. Cattlemen kept looking for the slightest hint that things might get better.

General indications pointed to some positive signs — fewer cattle on feed, continued low total cattle numbers, and a possible turnaround in the economy with a new Administration. But the upswing in prices didn't come until mid-year, and then price gains were only mild and short-lived.

Many cattlemen are holding on "by the skin of their teeth," still waiting for an improved cattle market. Traditional heavy fall marketings were light, and cow culling has not been excessive as ranchers try to hold on to what they have, hoping that things will be better next spring. Fortunately they have plenty of hay to overwinter their herds because a bumper crop ,,

was harvested this year although some was lost to heavy rains and flooding. With a generally mild winter forecasted for this part of the country, most cattlemen should be in good shape for the coming year.

But how long can they continue to face low prices? And, how long will feedlot operators continue to stay in business when they are losing so much per head on every animal fed?

THE CROP PICTURE Cattlemen were not alone with price problems in 1981. Farmers can attest to that. The past two years have been in sharp contrast to each other as far as the crop production picture is concerned, and each time farmers have come away as the losers.

In 1980 farmers saw their crops ravaged by drought. The few that managed to have something to harvest got top dollars. This year it was a different story. Farmers generally harvested bumper crops but the prices they got were near or below their cost of production. A case in point is the fact that cotton deficiency payments (the difference between the market price and the government _arget price) will likely be paid for the first time since this concept was devised in 1974.

1981 crops got off to a good start because of spring rains although these came a little late in some areas. Once the rains started, some were too heavy and lingered too long and often were accompanied by damaging hail. Flooding and hail caused some crop losses in South and Southwest Texas, making replanting necessary. Young crops also were hurt by heavy rains in coastal areas. As a result, some cotton and soybean crops never got off the ground along the Upper Coast. Weedy fields caused by extensive wet conditions also plagued crops. And, to add to the woes of farmers in coastal areas, wet fall weather hampered harvest operations, causing further crop losses.

Late summer and fall flooding in North Central and West Central Texas and in parts of the Coastal Bend that caused heavy livestock and poultry losses also took its toll of some crops. Cotton quality was reduced sharply, peanut quality suffered, and some small grains that had just been planted were washed out. Some cotton stored in modules — as well as some baled cotton — was lost in the Coastal Bend. Fall rains over much of the plains and western areas also delayed cotton maturity, but a later than normal killing frost helped that situation.

Cotton root rot, a severe cotton disease during wet years, took a heavy toll of the crop in the Central Texas Blacklands where it is most prevalent. Losses ranged from 15 to 30 percent.

Despite these problems in some areas, Texas farmers harvested record yields of wheat, corn and grain sorghum and better-thanaverage yields of cotton, rice, peanuts and most other crops. But the good news ended at the marketplace.

Why the low prices for farm commodities? It's generally a problem of oversupply due to bumper crops in this country as well as abroad. Many grain warehouses are filled to the brim. Unless something unforeseen happens to sharply reduce supplies in the ".“

coming months, the outlook for significant price improvements for farm commodities in 1982 will remain bleak.

THE YEAR AHEAD A lot of things are weighing on the minds of farmers and ranchers as 1981 comes to a close. How long will they be able to keep their operations afloat financially? How long can they keep producing crops and livestock at just a meager profit or, in many cases, at a loss? Those are heartrendering questions that they face at a time when the entire economy of this nation is stagnant.

Economic recovery can't come too soon, and if and when it does come, will farmers and ranchers get a fair share or will they continue to flounder for survival? The questions are many but the answers are few.

The new farm bill, when it finally surfaces, will shed some light on farm and ranch decisions for the next few years, but many problems will continue to persist.

Agriculture remains an honorable profession, one that has made this country what it is today. Nevertheless, farmers and ranchers continue to fall by the wayside almost daily, victims of the cost-price squeeze.

Production expenses have been driven up by rising energy costs, spiraling inflation and high interest rates on borrowed capital. Yet the market place has been unyielding in offering higher returns to those who produce the food and fiber for this nation and for many other countries as well.

With more and more mouths to feed and bodies to clothe, those farmers and ranchers who can manage to survive the current financial crisis may be in for better times in the years ahead. And so the gamble continues.

To Avoid Insurance Claim Problems How

COLLEGE STATION—Don't hassle with problems when filing insurance claims. Follow some simple guidelines when filing to help everything go smoothly, suggests Linda McCormack, a family resource management specialist.

Find out exactly what information is needed, what forms should be filled out and how and where to obtain estimates of damage, she says.

Your insurance company or its literature will give you this information, the specialist adds.

McCormack is on the home economics staff of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

When you talk with someone from the insurance company, write down their name for future reference in case of problems or delays.

Most delays in settling claims occur because policyholders don't include the claim numbers when they write to the Company, the specialist points out.

Other delays are the result of failure to send in damage repair bills promptly, McCormack says.

If ta policyholder is not satisfied with the company's handling of his case, he should take further; steps to make sure his complaint is heard, the specialist advises.

Check your reference list and contact the person you talked with first. Calmly explain the facts of your case.

If this doesn't help, go one step further and contact that representative's manager.

If you're still unsuccessful, put your complaint in writing and send it to the company's corporate or regional consumer-affairs department, McCormack says.

Use these suggestions when writing a letter to resolve a problem: *write the letter neatly and legibly, *keep it short and to the point stating problems, listing policy and claim numbers and pertinent dates.

State specifically what you woulo like done, *include your name, address, work and home telephone numbers on all letters, *keep a copy of the letter for your files, and *allow at least five days for a response.

200 Pounds of Junk Mail Heavy Burden for Housewife PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) — Betty Wilkinson knows exactly how much junk mail her household got in 1981 — 200 pounds.

The 57-year-old keypunch operator said she collected enough "occupant-resident" junk mail to fill four 30-gallon plastic trash bags.

"We called the mailman in yesterday," she said Thursday. "He just laughed and laughed. Then he told us he delivers to 700 households in our neighborhood. That means 200 pounds multiplied by 700 for our neighborhood alone."

The grandmother of five said other family members "just figured I was a little kooky but they let me go ahead" with the scheme.

"I've been wanting to do this for years and years but someone would get to the mail before me and throw it out," she said.

"You wouldn't believe the things I got," she said. "If I bought all the insurance I was offered, I'd be insured for -a billion dollars!"

She'd been offered pecan groves in Georgia, apple groves in Washington, magazine subscriptions, clothing, and even a chance to be a miracle healer who could rub headaches away.

Planning Vital For '82 Peanut Crop COLLEGE STATION -Peanut farmers must give careful attention to production costs, marketing and financing as they look to the 1982 crop.

Dr. Ashley Lovell, an agricultural economist, suggests a "post game" evaluation of previous peanut crops

to help growers mold a successful game plan for next season.

"Look at your operation field by field or use some other measure, such as dryland versus irrigated, in your post game analysis," suggests Lovell, who is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

"Determine which fields or systems are profitable and eliminate those that are losers year in and year out."

When projecting production costs, remember that lower than average yields or significant increases in input prices will raise the breakeven price, adds the economist.

"If the peanut market is depressed in 1982, plan on growing peanuts in the short run as long as the price covers variable costs and no better alternative is available for the resources devoted to peanuts," Lovell advises growers.

Variable costs include expenses for items such as seed, fertilizer, insecticides, herbicides, machinery and labor.

Fixed costs are influenced by annual usage of tractors and equipment. This depends on the total acres of cropland over which the machinery is spread. Land rental agreements also influence fixed costs, the economist says.

As far as financing is concerned, lenders will look closely at the peanut section of the final legislation under which the 1982 peanut crop is produced, notes Lovell.

Assuming an increase in market price risk and continuous high production costs and interest rates, producers may want to share risks with landlords, he adds. This would reduce the operating capital requirement, interest expenses and price and yield risks.

However, marketing strategies might include forward contracting a portion of the crop to cover variable costs, studying crop reports and other supply and demand indicators, maintaining close contact with the market and what local buyers are willing to offer, and using farm or association storage for more orderly marketing.

With careful planning in developing a sound "game plan," peanut growers can take considerable uncertainty out of their '82 crop, believes the economist.
