Were there no bells to chime a carol, Nor singers in their robed apparel; No garlanded wreaths or mistletoe, Nor Christmas trees a light, or snow To mantle nature with its white Nor Yuletide wrappings, tinsel-bright; I still would welcome Christmas Day As an excuse for speech, and say A cheery greeting to each friend I hold as precious, and extend A word of courage on the street Toward any soul I chanced to meet; For it grows ever more to me Than just a time of gaiety.

This world would reach a sorry state Were there no season to abate A maddening rush for pride and pelf, And think of others than oneself. ** "0 Evergreen, 0 Evergreen, how faithful are thy branches." The gaily-decorated evergreen tree has become such a beloved symbol of the Yuletide season in the United States especially and throughout many other parts of the world, that it is even celebrated in song. *** The custom of setting up a tree in the home during the holiday season began in Germany. Originally the trees were used in medieval mystery plays, to represent the Paradise tree or "Three of Life."

When these plays became prohibited in the churches, the symbolic Paradise tree was taken into the home. At first the trees were decorated with white wafers.

These gave way to cookies cut in the shape of stars, angels, hearts, flowers and bells. Eventually they were festended with paper roses, apples, gilded nuts and candies.

Wednesday_ December 17, 1980 The custom was brought from Germany to France by the Princess Helen of Mecklenburg when she married the Duke of Orleans. Another royal marriage was responsible for England's introduction to the Christmas tree.

Prince Albert of Germany, consort of Queen Victoria, decorated trees for his children at Christmastime, and the custom was quickly adopted by the English. *** Americans became acquainted with the Christmas tree when Germans emigrated to this continent in 1830. The immigrants followed their beloved tradition of setting up the Paradise tree each Christmas, and soon their neighbors picked up the charming custom.

It has spread until there is scarcely a home, place of business or public spot that does not proudly and gloriously show off a brightly ornamented tree at Christmastime. *** "Tway the night before Christmas." . .. How familiar all of us are with this phrase -- the first line of the poem, "A Visit From St. Nicholas." Yet, how ,many of us know the author's name? Surely it

is safe to say that very few of us

do, yet this man can be truthfully

described as a little-known American author. He wrote articles which had limited appeal. He married a beautiful and talented girl and to this union was added six children.

On a Christmas Eve night he sentimentally wrote a poem for his children and read it to them by

Wednesday; that has happened twice and we have not published one Vestnik that year. This year January 2nd was a Wednesday, however, this being leap year 1980, December 31st is the 366th day and the 53rd Wednesday so, it seems, that the December 24th issue Volume 68 Number 52 should be our last issue, so we should not have a Wednesday, December 31st issue. Keep that in mind, please.

Number two is the above and please write early; remember the mail is slowed and the,,holiday rush retards its delivery.

NEWSBRIEFS Ray Baca, Sr. 86, of Fayetteville, passed away Thursday, December 4th, in St. Luke's Hospital in Houston. Funeral arrangements are pending at this time (Friday) at the Koenig-Peel Funeral Home. Bro. Baca was a musician known throughout the State of Texas and a member of the Baca Music Family and probably best known for his performance in recent years on the dulcimer with his son, Gil. He was the son of the founder of the first Baca Band in Fayetteville, Frank J. Baca, Sr., and part of the rich Baca music tradition in Texas. He was a member of Lodge No. 1 in Fayetteville, having joined that lodge on November 2, 1934 at the age of 40. -NAM

the fireplace, then, putting the poem away, he forgot about it. A year passed and a young woman Visiting in the home saw the poem and asked permission to copy it;

then sent it to a newspaper editor who printed it. Later, the author's name was made public. His name: Dr. Clement Clark Moore; a man who lived to the age of 84 years and who wrote a poem that perhaps will live forever.

There are some things your editor needs to call to our members' and readers' attention at this time in 1980.

Number one is the fact that this is about the third time since yours truly became editor 12 years ago that, we have 53 Wednesdays in a year. That happens when January 1st is a Wednesday, then the 365th day (December 31st) is also a

As we approach the holiday season our thoughts naturally turn to family and friends. As we think of cherished

friendships formed over the years past, we feel that we are abundantly blessed.

To all our members and friends, we wish for you a very happy Holiday Season.

During this Yuletide Season, we re-commit our lives in an effort to be better and to do more in working with you in extending the good works and image of the SPJST. This year has almost slipped away, leaving behind stirring memories of many happy days and a few that were sad. We are reminded of friends of the past from whom we are now separated, either by distance or by their departure into the Eternal. We cannot help remembering that some who were with us last Christmas are no longer in our midst.

During all this, however, we cannot help knowing that we are richly blessed. In our homes there is a feeling that God has been especially good to us in allowing us to share another Holiday Season with our families and the many friends. wide spectrum of human emotions. For the young, a visit with Santa and presents under the tree plus the bright decorations are pure joy. But Christmas, regardless of what it should be, is not always a happy time for the elderly or for the lonely of any age. Being away from loved ones, or in some cases simply neglected, is a solemn reminder that peace on earth and goodwill toward men might not be as real for many as it could be.

And mingled with the joys of the current season, there's probably a nostalgic look back for old-timers to the family pleasures of earlier days when their own children, now grown, were excited participants on the Christmas scene.

Happy anticipation is reflected in faces of youngsters who need a little time to think about "what they want from Santa". Scenes of Christmas inspire concentration, mirrored in intense, angelic, meditative expressions.

Young and old alike throughout Christendom can share on Christmas day in the greatest emotion of all - the celebration of a birthday: "For unto you is born this day...a Saviour..." Zatopek Merry Christmas LODGE OFFICERS' WORKSHOPS 1981 To All Concerned: Based on precedence and recent actions of the Supreme Lodge, the following will be in effect for the workshops in 1981: 1) Officers will be those as before, including the lodge treasurer, or some other person designated by the lodge.

2) Sections will include lodge presidents and vice presidents in one section, lodge secretaries in another, and financial secretaries in another. The treasurers may attend any or all of the three sections, moving to them only at the start of the sessions or during the breaks.

3) Mileage for one car only from each lodge, $.30 a mile, however, if one of the locations is not convenient for the officers of a particular lodge on the date scheduled, they may attend the workshops at one of the other locations, but mileage would still be paid for only one car from each lodge at any one of the three locations. Anyone else wishing to attend these workshops, other than mentioned here, is welcome to do so, furnishing their own transportation.

These workshops held in previous years were proven to be mutually beneficial.

They will deal primarily with lodge procedures and administration. We are not including workshops on youth work or insurance per se, since these two areas are adequately covered in district and state seminars and training classes.

We must remember that our national and state laws define a Fraternal Benefit Society as "Having a lodge system with ritualistic work." The more efficient our lodges are, the better we are insuring and guaranteeing our future as a Fraternal Benefit Society. The United States Internal Revenue Code specifies two primary requisites for a Fraternal Benefit Society: "a) Must operate on the lodge system, and b) Provide for the payment of life, sick, accident or other benefits to members or their dependents." Thus we see the specific reference to a "lodge system" and it is through the lodge system that we must operate and improve our services. It behooves every officer mentioned above to attend these workshops as a part of his duty and obligation in being an officer in the local lodge, and especially since we will be operating under the amended by-laws of the XXIII Convention. We will all learn through these workshops. In the meantime, we would welcome suggestions that any of you might have about what topic or topics to include in any of the sections at the workshops in 1981.

Those of you out in the field and on the local lodge level may have some definite ideas as to what needs discussing. If you do, let us know.

Sister Mary Louise Cmelka passed away December 2, 1980 in the Memorial Southwest Hospital having been ill since April of this year. She was the daughter of a faithful lodge member, the late Stanley Cmelka and her mother Mrs. Cmelka. Rosary was recited Friday at 8:00 p.m. and funeral services Saturday at 12 noon December 6, 1980 in St. Charles Barromeo Catholic Church on Tidwell Road with Rev. Bernard Roemer officiating. Survivors are: mother, Mrs. Cmelka; one sister and brother-in-law, Janie and Bob Swatlovski; also nephews and nieces, all of Houston. We extend our sincere sympathy to the family.

Don't forget the Christmas Special Saturday, December 20 with Donnie Wavra and Wince Shimek. A lot of good dancing with two good orchestras!

I think I will take time now and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year; I might not get a chance, and that goes for Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88, also.

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 50, El Campo held their meeting December 3rd at the American Legion Auxiliary.

We had election of officers for the coming year. We were reminded to attend the District VI meeting in March at Hillje, with El Campo Lodge No. 50 and Hillje Lodge No. 40 being the hosts.

We had our Christmas party and Santa Claus also visited us.

Refreshments were served and a turkey and dressing supper, with all the trimmings, was served to all members and guests with the lodge paying for it.

Dear Readers: Lodge No. 6 Cottonwood held its meeting Sunday, December 7th.

President Dobecka opened the meeting by having youth members Delores and Shirley Dobecka recite the Pledge to the American flag. Delores then recited the SPJST Pledge.

Secretary Barbara Hykel was called on to have the roll call of officers. All were present.

Flagbearer Eddie Hykel reported twenty-three members present.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Hykel. They were approved as read. Sister Hykel then read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge SPJST officers sending their Christmas greetings, also Christmas greetings from Editor Rudy Sefcik and Sister Maxine and their family.

Additional correspondence was read from SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska.

Treasurer Georgie Wachsmann and Financial-Secretary George Straten gave their reports. Hall Chairman Alvin Schuetz then reported on the bar proceeds.

Board of Trustees' Chairman George Straten reported that in the trustees' meeting, which was held Friday, December 5, it was announced that Brother Robert Dobecka had purchased the metal chairs and also the tables. The siding for the exterior of the lodge has been ordered and when it arrives, members will be asked to come out and help put it up.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported that the youth will present their Christmas program to the rest home residents, Wednesday, December 10th. She assigned places to all the youth and adults as to where everyone will be asked to decorate the lodge for our Christmas party. Everyone's help will be appreciated. We will decorate it Friday, December 19. The youth members are practicing the program numbers each Friday. The club is still selling candy, knives and cards. The birthday celebrant for the month is Bobby Hykel. Shirley Dobecka brought the birthday cake.

The lodge's Christmas party will be held Sunday, December 21st with supper being served at 5 p.m. with a program following, alSo Santa's visit for young and old. All members and their families are invited; a turkey supper with all the trimmings will be served.

Members are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert.

A committee consisting of Sister Lydia Dobecka, Brother Aubrey Uptmor and Brother Elton Stuchly was selected to study and present a wage increase for the lodge officers and bar chairman and his assistants.

Sister Dobecka reported on the Card Committee report as to whom she sent get-well, birthday and anniversary cards Linda Pliscott was a new transferee into our lodge.

The $10 progressive door prize was Michael J. Parma and the $9 progressive door prize was Georgia A. Bellville; neither was present. The $2 door prize was Johnnie Krizan.

Next on the agenda was the election of officers for 1981. President Dobecka turned the election over to Vice President Rose Uptmor to conduct the election for president. After the election for this office, President Dobecka took over the rest of the election. These will be our officers for 1981: President, Robert Dobecka, Sr.; Vice President, Rose Uptmor; Secretary, Barbara Hykel; Treasurer, Georgie Wachsmann, Financial-Secretary, George Straten; Reporter, Delores Dobecka; Flagbearer, Eddie Hykel; Youth Leader, Willie Mae Schuetz; Assistant Youth Leader, Rose Uptmor; Hall Chairman, Alvin Schuetz; Hall Assistants, Aubrey Uptmor, Andrew Wachsmann.

The Sokol Unit of Corpus Christi has honored many distinguished members many times. In my photo album collection I have two pictures that may be of interest to some if they see it in our Vestnik. They are known members of Sokol and SPJST organization since early 1920 in Dallas, and 1940 in Corpus Christi, Texas. My photo collection covers one thousand (1,000) persons. At this time I continue to sort them and insert them in the added album books: some copies of originals will be given to my children, Buckholts Museum, Corpus Christi SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi Library, also one copy to Corpus Christi State University.

(I am interested in this type of work, at the same time, it lets me forget the pain I have with my leg.)

Many of these photos have no names or date, which is of importance to their value. In 1922 the American Sokol Organization, with the main office in Chicago, Illinois, Professor Joza Havranek sent to the southern District Organization to reorganize old existing Sokol units and establish new ones. In my opinion he had great success. While I, with my dear wife Albina and children, were active in Buckholts, Texas, Jim and his dear wife Venuse (Winnie) Kucera, were active in Dallas in the Sokol unit named Zizka. Jim was (for many years) their men's director of the Southern District. Winnie was secretary and women's director for many years.

We met in 1924 for the first time when we attended the Sokol Slet in Fort Worth; then, in the 1925 Sokol Slet in Dallas and 1926 in Seaton, Texas and since then many times at the annual Southern District meetings held in January in Dallas for many years. Most of the time it was freezing weather.

While we were farming at Buckholts, they operated a small grocery store with a meat market. If my memory is right, they sold out and moved to Corpus Christi in 1937, built a new business building, and continued in a similar business in a good spot near Junior High School Ween Seale and bakery near Six Point.

We moved to Corpus Christi in 1940; no more farming. I was employed as a gin manager for the Farmer's Cotton Gin in 1941-42. In 1943-44-45, I was employed in the shipyard and machine shop. When the war was over, I started carpenter's work, built new houses and did repairs. My dear wife took care of the rental property we owned. I retired after I had been in the hospital four

also served on various committees.

In 1956, Brother Jim Kucera was honored with a surprise party and was presented with a memorial trophy for his distinguished services. (Photo is accompanying my article) When I attended the silver wedding anniversary on 14 October 1979 for Brother Jerry and Sister Mildred(Millie) Elzner, I did not expect some snapshots of Sister Winnie Kucera and me taken during the wedding march. Jerry and Mildred Elzner and Bro. Jerry Sijansky mailed me some pictures and one is also included with this article.

Sincere thanks to you Sokol Men's Director, Brother Jerry Sijansky, and Jerry and Mildred Elzner for the bouquet of recognition; it was a great surprise.

Our thanks also to all who were and are local members of the Educational and Fraternal non-profit organizations.

At the present time, Sister Winnie Kucera resides with her dear son, James and his wife, Geraldine Kucera.

The Kuceras sold their business but he kept the building for rent or lease income, and also retired. Brother Jim was elected president of the local Sokol unit for years: 1938 to 1964 at several different times, a total of 131/2 years.

When I was elected secretary in the years of 1957 to 1965, a total of 9 years, I resigned and Brother Jim was elected and served in 1966-67-68 and 3 months in 1969. He passed away 1 April 1969, just a short time before the Slet was held 21st and 22nd of June in the same

year. He was the men's director in years 1942 to 1946; then from 1954 to 1964, 1967-69, for a total of 13 years and 3 months.

He was an SPJST member of Lodge No. 130, Dallas since 1920. At Lodge No. 56, he served 1 year as vice president and then youth leader for 3 years, and 1 year as SPJST State Youth Director. He was also a delegate to the State Convention one time. He served on various committees.

His wife, Sister Winnie Kucera was elected secretary from 1941 to 1946, for a total of 6 years. Besides this office she

Dear Brothers and Sisters: This is a belated softball team report which I am finally making to cover the final event for the season.

On our fall league results, we won three games and lost three games to tie for second place with another team.

This wasn't bad when you consider only a few of the regular team starters played and some in only a few of the games. The guys had a lot of fun and enjoyed the games. Jerry Zabojnik managed the team and did a good job.

We wish to thank Brother Sid Pokladnik for sponsoring the team in the fall league; we only wish we would have won a trophy like we did the previous fall league in 1979.

The annual team awards banquet was held Sunday afternoon, October 12 at the home of Ida and Lionel Schulz in their spacious backyard. On the menu was delicious barbecued chicken, the head chef was Larry Brennan assisted

by Bino Vrana. They did a terrific job because the chickens were very good.

We also had salad, baked potatoes, dessert and drinks. Hors d'oeuvres

10 dips were enjoyed before the meal; these were brought by the players' wives and by the lodge officers or their wives. May we extend our thanks to all those who brought any of the goodies mentioned above. All the soft drinks were donated by Annie and Otto Janousek; our deepest thanks and other donations were given by others; to you, we also extend our fullest thanks. We thank Ida and Lionel Schulz for the use of their home and backyard for the party, the setting was ideal. Horseshoe games were enjoyed during the afternoon, it's a most interesting and fun game in which all the players would participate; also thanks to Danny Yates, Greg Vrana, Paul Bartos and Lionel Schulz for helping transport chairs and tables from the lodge for our banquet.

The most valuable player award trophy winner was a tie between Danny Yates and Don Jarma: our congratulations to both of you, you were both most deserving as evident by the vote of all the team players. Our batting team champ trophy winner was Don Jarma with a .365 batting average. The team is ready to play again next season and Jerry Zabojnik will be the team manager. After all these seasons, I have finally retired and, however, I will help out with the business end of the team.

VES T N11C DALLAS CIRCLE OF CZECH WOMEN It's that time again-the glorious season of the year is almost here, time to trim the Christmas tree and be one among the shoppers in the crowded malls. Isn't it fun?

Our December meeting was held in the Wyatt's Cafeteria in Northlake Shopping Center. President A. Zvolanek called the meeting to order at 10:30 a. m.

A brief moment of silence was observed in memory of Frank Henzen, husbaild of Sister Evelyn Henzen and son of Sister Hattie Henzen Hamusek, also in memory of Louis Stojanik, brother of Sister V. Blatney, and in memory of Bill Rezek, brother of Sisters M. Voss, E. Bartos, and G. Long.

Sincere sympathy is expressed to each one of these sisters and their families.

The pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag was repeated.

Guests were welcomed and introduced. Our guests were Lucille Stout, Lillian Graeser, Margaret Christe, Mildred Chervenka, Henrietta Schindler, and Mila Rehozkova from Czechoslovakia. Congratulations to Mila. She has remarried since she visited us a few years ago. She is a cousin of Sisters M. Kowal and L. Drzewicki. Our men guests were M. Jurcik, W. Tupy, G. Kalich, and G. Skotak.

Recording Secretary J. Kankrlik read the minutes which were approved as read. Treasurer A. Vlk gave a good financial report.

Corresponding Secretary L. Pavelka read a "thank you" note from the family of Frank Henzen, also read one from the Cal Farley Boys Ranch for the donation received from the Circle.

Membership Secretary M. Sykora reported that the following became members of the Circle: Mildred Chervenka, Henrietta Schindler, Lillian Graeser.

Sister B. Kalich thanked Sister A. Zvolanek for sending the card for' her last month; there were 10 cards sent.

Sisters on the sick list are M. Noska, who hurt her back, M. Stransky, and F. Pokladnik; hope each of you gets well soon. Our little grandson Michael who was burned, is home, improving greatly. His grafts are taking very good.

Sister H. Vrla, Jr. took a gift to Sister F. Pokladnik while she was hospitalized.

Christmas greetings were sent by Sisters F. Konakovsky of Taylor, B. Paryzkova of Czechoslovakia, A. Ozymy, M. Bartek, M. Stransky, and F. Schweizer. Sister F. Schweizer thanked

everyone for the cards received while sick.

Sister M. Malooly read the names of the December birthday sisters. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters A. Skrabanek, F. Barfield, E. Cechan, Linda Kartous, L. Kaska, V. Kohn, A. Lesikar, A. Mach, F. Peressenyi, F. Pokladnik, B. Reames, L. Spain, F. Sparks, and M. Kubacak.

It was good to see Sisters F. Peressenyi, M. Dujka, and A. Skrabanek back with us after a few months' absence.

A donation was collected by the Circle Members for the National Council of Women of Free Czechoslovakia. This is the time of the year our Circle gives a donation to the Auxiliary Gift Shop in the Veterans' Hospital, in memory of Sister M. Toberny, who devoted many years of volunteer services there. The Circle received a nice check from Sokol Zizka. This was their way to say "thank you" to all the ladies who helped, in any way, to make the bazaar a success. This was so very nice of them and we appreciate it. Donations to the Circle were given in memory of Frank Henzen by Sisters B. Podhrasky and A. Zvolanek. Sister E. Bartos gave a donation in memory of her mother's birthday.

Congratulations to Sister Evelyn and Adolph Salac on their 40th wedding anniversary. They celebrated this occasion dining and dancing at Lodge 84. Congratulations to David Reznik, son of Sister Dorothy and George Reznik. His Classic Soccer League (SOLAR) won division championship as well as district. Jonathan Reznik's team won division in his league. Now mother has to make more shelf room for their trophies. Linda and Ron Coker are on a Caribbean cruise. Linda's mother, Sister M. Bartek, is babysitting with their son. We missed Millie at our meeting.

After lunch, in the cafeteria, we enjoyed our Christmas party. Sister Reznik led the singing of Christmas songs, in Czech and English. Gifts were exchanged and a good time of fellowship was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Sisters M. Nesuda and Z. Skotak and husband George for furnishing the good wine. Sister Malooly deserves a big "thank you" for furnishing the lovely Christmas centerpiece and Sister A. Zvolanek for furnishing the candy canes. We had a total of 57 present.

Remember, we do not have a meeting in January. Our next meeting will be held February 5, 1981.

Merry Christmas LODGE NO. 141, SEALY Important SPJST Announcement January 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Fire Station in Sealy there will be a very important meeting concerning dues to be assessed to SPJST members. According to the By-Laws each local club can determine whether or not it wishes to have dues and, if so, how much.

The decision will be made at the January 7 meeting. To quote the by-laws: "Article 72. Premiums and Dues (a) Every local lodge determines its own local dues, if any, at annual meetings. (b) All premiums and dues and assessments, if any are paid monthly or for a longer period, according to the wishes of the payor (c) Members who have their certificates paid up in due course, according to the terms thereof and who wish to remain active members, must pay the local lodge dues and assessments as prescribed by the lodge to which they belong, payable in advance."

Article 91. Suspension and Expulsion (a) a member whose certificate has no cash value, automatically suspends himself from the benefits if he does not pay his monthly premiums and dues by the first day of the succeeding month. If he does not pay up with in three months, he is automatically expelled. Such expelled member may again become a member at his original age within three months after his expulsion if he pays all his premiums and dues in arrears, plus three month's premiums and dues in advance, provided he is in good health.

Should there be some doubt about his insurability, he must submit, at his own expense, to a medical examination (using application approved by the Society). (b) After the payment of premiums for at least the number of years for which the value is first shown in the table of values, and when the reserve is not exhausted by forgetfulness, neglect or refusal to pay premiums and dues on such certificate, at the request of the lodge, the Supreme Lodge shall figure extended insurance on the full amount of this certificate, as the reserves permit. (c) If such certificate is partially encumbered b y a loan, or the member owes the lodge clues, or both, the amount owing shall be deducted from his reserves and the term of

11 extended insurance be then figured on the remaining balance of his reserves.

The indebtedness owing to the lodge cannot be paid for more than twelve months. (d) On termination of term insurance the Society does not owe him any obligation and his insurance is cancelled.

If you wish to have a say as to whether dues will be assessed or not, come to this meeting.

Merry Christmas AN INVITATION Bro. Sefcik: Please publish the following letter of invitation soliciting our members' participation (attendance) at the coming national (international) XVth American Sokol Slet, to be held in Ft. Worth June 24th through the 27th, 1981. You might run this invitation a time or two again in the spring of next year. I have notified Bro. Zitny that the Supreme Lodge will be representing the SPJST during a portion or portions of the Slet. It appears that the American Sokol Organization, with its "Slet Roundup", is planning a truly great Slet and should be something that our members would want to witness, if not all, then at least a portion of it. Further details on this Slet will be forthcoming from the national organization, along with a listing of the hotels in Ft. Worth that offer nearby accommodations.

And, Lord, help me to understand why $3 for a ticket to a movie is not bad, but $3.50 for a bushel of wheat that makes 50 loaves of bread is considered unreasonable.

A 50-cent "coke" at the ball game is okay, but a 20-cent glass of milk for breakfast is inflationary: Cotton is too high at 65 cents a pound, but a $20 shirt is viewed a bargain.

YOUTH SECTION Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members and Friends, We held our meeting Sunday, December 7th. We talked about how much fun our Thanksgiving party was.

After the meeting was adjourned, we presented our Christmas program to the adults. Ellen Hejl, Chrystal Marx, Denisse Wuensche and Ginger Wuensche played the piano. The rest of the youth members each presented a short speech. At the end of the program, the adults joined us singing some Christmas carols. After a very good supper, when everyone was finished eating, the kids played colored eggs.

Later the young and a bit of older people threw darts at balloons with a piece of paper in it In some balloons there was a prize with candy, but in others you were told to do something like sing or whistle. There was also a washer game.

The grand prize went to John Wuensche; after the games, everyone received candy bags.

Our next meeting will be held January 4, 1981, following the adults' meeting at 3 p.m.

Mr. Blaha was born August 17, 1925 , in Somerville, the son of the late William L. Blaha and Vlaster (Sebesta) Blaha.

He had lived in Burleson County all his life. He attended Caldwell schools and was a 1942 graduate. He was , a merchant and started with his father in the cafe business, the Square Cafe in downtown Caldwell, and opened the store on Highway 21 at the Y in 1962.

He retired in August this. year. He was married July 17, 1946 in Caldwell to 011ie Mae (Pat) Norman. He was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church, the SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New

Tabor, member of the Copperas Hollow Country Club, the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce and the Deanville Gun Club.

He was an avid sportsman; he loved to hunt and fish. He married Patsy Vanderburge October 26, 1980.

Funeral services for Mr. Blaha were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 1980, in the Phillips-Lucky Chapel with the Rev. Henry E. Beseda, pastor of the Austin Brethren Church officiating and interment was in the Snook Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Patsy Blaha of Caldwell; one son, Joe E. Blaha and daughter-in-law Mitzie Blaha of Caldwell; one daughter, Billie Ann Fritcher and son-in-law, Floyd Joe Fritcher of Caldwell; three step-daughters, Kay Vanderburge and Dorothy Fredrick of Houston and Nancy Vanderburge of Bryan; five grandchildren, Lori Blaha and Bradley Blaha, Floyd Joe Fritcher, Jr. and John Clayton Fritcher and a step-grandchild, Jeremy Vanderburge;and one sister, Mrs. Rudolph (Gladys) Slovacek Jr., of Houston.

Pallbearers were Tommy Tietjen, Wesley Kirz, Bob Towslee, Willie Elsik, Luther Turner, J. D. Duncan, Benjie Vyliral and Paul Emola.

He was a faithful member of the New Tabor Brethren Church and a member of this lodge Where he was a past president. He was also a member of the RVOS of New Tabor.

Funeral services were held October 5, 1980 in the New Tabor Brethren Church with the Revs. Albert Michalik and Henry Beseda officiating. Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

ITEMS OF INTEREST NATIVITY PLAYS FIRST PERFORMED IN THE MIDDLE AGES

The Nativity scenes, traditionally presented in many churches during the Christmas season, had their beginnings in the mystery plays of medieval England.

Actors for the plays were drawn from the guilds, each of which gave the same sequence of dramas each year.

Wrights, planters, glaziers, vintners, mercers, and goldsmiths acted the parts in plays dealing with the Nativity, the adoration of the shepherds and the magi, the magi's obligation, and the slaying of the innocents.

Today's church Nativity scenes often, are performed with the same simplicity as those of the early plays. Few other dramatic productions are centered on the first Christmas, perhaps because the cost involved for a short run, and perhaps because the sacred theme does not lend itself well to such portrayal.

Christmas, however, has been the theme of a number of plays, movies, and television productions. "Amahl and the Night Visitors," originally written for television, is growing in popularity.

"The Miracle," although not a Christmas story, is also popular during the season, and of course, Dickens' "Christmas Carol" is always enjoyed on television and in motion pictures, as well as in amateur productions.

In fact, holiday food and tradition throughout the United States owes much to this country for the rich heritage of celebration they have influenced.

From Czechoslovakia are dinner traditions for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For the Christmas Eve meal a perfectly fresh carp (fish) is a necessity.

It's such a necessity that the menu includes carp soup in carp sauce, along with another "family favorite" dish containing carp.

Stewed or fresh fruits served with spicy cookies complete the menu.

Dinner on Christmas Day is a festive meal of soup, roast goose, bread dumplings, braised red or green cabbage and hard, spiced cookies.

In addition, a folk custom on Christmas Eve sets the stage for the upcoming New Year, since it involves "Christmas fortune telling."

Each person slices an apple in half horizontally. If the exposed seeds form the outline of a star, good luck will be in store for that person all year.

Good eating is in store for New World families who add a touch of the Old World to their holiday festivities.

"BLUE SHELLED" EGGS NO DIFFERENT Despite some claims, "blue shelled" eggs are no more nutritious and are no lower in cholesterol than ordinary white or brown shelled eggs.

The myths originated mainly with the Araucana breed of chickens in Chile, says Dr. Dave Mellor, poultry marketing specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System. The Araucana chicken is the best known breed producing blue shelled eggs. Actually, the eggs vary in color from light green to dark olive, so some people have tabbed the Araucana the "Easter egg chicken."

In tests at Texas A&M University and other universities, blue shelled eggs have always had as much or more cholesterol than commercial table eggs or any other egg for that matter, points our Mellor. Actually, in one Texas A&M test, Araucana, quail, pheasant and bite Leghorn eggs all had the same 'sterol content based on amount of

cholesterol per unit weight of egg.

Blue shelled eggs are usually more expensive to produce than commercial table eggs, notes Mellor. People willing to pay a high price for these eggs should recognize that the Texas Egg Law requires that all eggs be graded, have a clean, sound shell and be maintained under 60 degrees F. -SPJSTFLORIST-NURSERY NEEDS UNDER STUDY Where is research for the florist-nursery industry headed, and what should be its direction?

This question was addressed at length by Dr. Henry Marc Cathey, chief of the Florist and Nursery Crops Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Md., during the annual Greenhouse Growers Conference last week at Texas A&M University. The conference was sponsored by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, A&M University System, and the Texas Association of Nurserymen.

Cathey, on leave from USDA for 1980-81 and currently located at Ohio State University, conducted five discussion sessions to gain input from key participants concerning future research needs to keep the florist industry moving ahead.

Discussion subjects included new approaches of environmental control of plant growth, commercialization of a new plant, how to produce the new plant, and how to maintain the quality of plants for consumers.

Cathey, who served as president of the American Horticultural Society from 1974 through 1978, pointed out that from a historical view, plants in agricultural production were collected and introduced into culture in all parts of the world. Many did not become widely accepted as commercial plants until discoveries were made to sort out and solve the major cultural, pest and adaptive steps, he noted.

A possible plan to follow in commercializing a new plant, Cathey said, might include collections, consumer evaluation, hybridization, propagation, management, adaptive procedures for stress, transportation, product design and other factors.

For continued effectiveness and creation of new plant products for the florist, industry and research must discover, communicate and ultimately bring about significant advances in technology, Cathey noted.

Future research also needs to look at new management systems for florist plants, and how to maintain the high quality of the product when it reaches the consumer, he said.

Cathey plans to publish a report of his findings and discussions with U.S. and Canada industry leaders, and others in Europe during the next several months.

The report, he said, hopefully will have significant future impact on the field of research in floriculture.

CREDIT CARDS STILL AFFORDABLE?

Can you still afford your credit cards?

Credit-card terms, conditions and costs have undergone major surgery in 1980, says Nancy Granovsky, a family resource management specialist.

No longer are credit cards merely "convenience." No longer can every card user who pays a bill in full automatically avoid a finance charge. And the cards are no longer free in some states, the specialist says.

Mrs. Granovsky is on the home economics staff of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A and M University System.

Because of these changes, you may wish to take a second look at your bank credit cards to determine how or it' you wish to continue to use them, she says.

For example, the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) for bank credit cards is subject to state law.

In Texas, the APR ceiling is 18 percent.

Some states charge 22 percent, while others charge 12-16 percent, so don't assume that because you live in Texas, your band credit costs are 18 percent.

The rate of your card depends on the state from which your card was issued.

Some banks have moved their entire credit-card service - operations to stales where they can charge higher interest.

Some banks have also changed the method used to compute finance charge by eliminating the "free float" period. It used to he dial if you paid your hill in Rill each month, no finance charge was assessed.

Now you may be assessed 'a finance charge from the day charges are posted to your account.

Still other banks assess annual fees, most typically $12 per bank credit card.

However, many banks still offer the cards at no annual charge. Others assess transaction tees or flat monthly fees.

Consumers can do several things to minimize their credit costs.

Read the fine print in the credit

Wednesday . December 17, 1980 contract. What is the APR? How are finance charges computed and to what balances are they? Is there an annual fee for the card?

Check to see what credit-card terms and conditions are available from other financial institutions. You may want to apply for a bank credit card from another institution if you can save money.

But, don't expect credit granted immediately. Approval depends on your credit rating as well as on the policies of the institution regarding new accounts.

If you have two or more band credit cards, consider using only one, particularly if your other cards are subject to unavoidable finance charges or annual fees.

Decide which is more cost effective -paying an annual credit-card fees are not duductible.

If your average daily balance each month subject to finance charge is $200, you would pay approximately $36 in interest for one year, figured at an APR of 18 percent. The whole $36 could be itemized as interest expense on your tax return. On the other hand, annual credit-card fees are not tax deductible Re-assess your credit-card fees use habits. Remind yourself that everything will cost more if your card assesses finance charges as soon as the items are posted to the account.

Adjust your attitude regarding the use of credit. Many of have become so accustomed to "free float" or "free credit card" privileges, that we wince when we must bear the costs of credit ourselves.

In a howl, sift flour, baking powder and salt. Beat the egg with two tablespoons water. Add to flour mixture. Add buttered bread cubes and let stand 10 minutes. (Sometimes a little more water may be needed if egg isn't too large.) Have a large kettle of boiling salted \\ :Her ready. Form dough into two oblong loaves and lower gently into boiling water. Simmer 10 to 12 minutes 31/2

17 on one side, then carefully turn and simmer another 10 minutes. Lift carefully and drain on board. Cut into 1/2 inch thick slices with a strong thread.

Finely diced onion may be browned in butter or drippings from baked poultry and sprinkled over sliced dumplings at serving time.

Svestkove knedliky [FRUIT DUMPLINGS] Use fresh prunes, peaches, apricots, cherries (sweet or sour), blueberries, quartered apples or pears.

Plain Dough (Nudlove t&to): 2 cups flour 1 egg, slightly beaten 2 tablespoons melted butter %cup milk 1 teaspoon salt Mix egg with butter and milk. Add salt. Sift flour on a board and add first mixture, kneading until smooth. Cut dough into small pieces and wrap evenly around the fruit. Seal well all around. Drop dumplings in a large pan of boiling salted water and cook for about 8 minutes. Do not overcook.

Remove from colander over hot water until ready to serve. Arrange on a platter; sprinkle with some more melted butter and sugar. Crumbled pot cheese, ground poppyseed or bread crumbs fried in butter can be used for topping.

RYE BREAD filthy chleba] 2 packages dry yeast 4 cups lukewarm water 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon (or more) salt 1 tablespoon (or more) caraway seed 1/4 cup cooking oil About 3 cups white flour Pure rye flour (about 7 cups) Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water.

Add the rest of the ingredients to make a stiff dough. Work the dough in the mixing bowl with a wooden spoon. Let stand, covered, in a warm place until doubled in bulk. Put dough on floured board, shape into loaves, and place into greased bread pans. Bread pans should be about half-filled with dough. Again let stand in a warm place until doubled in bulk. Bake in a 375-degree oven approximately 45 minutes. Brush with melted shortening after bread is taken out of the oven and cool before storing.

BOHANKY [Czech-style hamburger patties] I lb. ground beef /2 cup bread crumbs I chopped onion

1 clove mashed garlic 1 teaspoon marijoram Salt and pepper to taste Add a small amount of water to bread crumbs and mix until thoroughly moistened and the texture of the ground beef. Then mix all ingredients together until well blended. Form patties, dip into flour and brown in a small amount of fat in a frying pan. When browned, place lid on pan and cook until meat is cooked. Remove patties, and make a gravy out of the drippings in the pan by adding flour, seasonings, and water.

Serve this gravy over the patties.

CZECH POT ROAST 7 tablespoons flour 1/8 teaspoon pepper 3 to 4 lbs. arm or blade pot roast 3 tablespoons fat 3/4 cup water 1 (No. 303) can tomatoes 1 (11/4ozs.) pkg. onion soup mix , Mix together part of flour (4 tablespoons) and pepper. Dredge pot roast with seasoned flour, then brown in hot fat. Pour off drippings. Add part of water ( 1/2 cup), tomatoes and onion soup mix. Cover tightly and simmer for 3 to 4 hours or until tender. Remove pot roast to hot platter. Mix together remaining water (1/4 cup) and flour (3 tablespoons).

Add to cooking liquid; cook and stir until thickened. Serve gravy with pot roast.

HAM AND CHEESE STRATA [Resembles an Omelet] 8 slices day-old bread, crusts removed 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese 1 cup chopped cooked ham 4 eggs, beaten 2 cups milk 1 teaspoon minced onion 1/2 teaspoon mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt Dash of pepper Arrange four slices bread in bottom of an eight-inch square baking pan. Cover with cheese slices, ham and remaining bread. Combine eggs, milk, onion and seasonings; pour over the mixture in pan. Let stand one hour. Then bake one hour in a 325-degree oven or until lightly browned and puffy. Serve with the following sauce: 1 can undiluted, heated cream of mushroom soup with a tablespoon of chopped pimento added.

CROCK POT GOULASH 2 lbs. round steak cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1 cup chopped onions 1 clove minced garlic 2 tablespoons flour

18 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon paprika % teaspoon dried thyme, crushed 1 bay leaf 1 can tomatoes (1 lb. 2-oz.)

1 cup sour cream Put steak cubes, onion, garlic in crock pot. Stir in flour and mix to coat steak cubes. Add all remaining ingredients except sour cream. Stir well. Cover and cook on low for .7 to 9 hours. Add sour cream 30 minutes before serving, and stir thoroughly. Serve over hot, buttered noodles or rice.

CZECH-STYLE MOLASSES COOKIES 1/2 cup soft butter or lard 11/4 cups sugar 2 eggs * 1/3 cup molasses 2 cups oatmeal 1/2 cup oatmeal 1/2 cup nuts 1 3/4 cups flour 1 teaspoon soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup raisins Mix in the usual way, drop by teaspoonful on greased baking sheet, and bake in a 350-degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes. *(Use homemade syrup if available)

BEER BREAD 4 cups dry biscuit mix 3 tablespoons sugar 4 oz. grated cheddar cheese 1 can beer Mix all ingredients until just blended.

Fill 18 well greased muffin tins 1/2 full.

Bake at 400 degrees about 15 to 20 minutes, until golden brown.

STRUDLICKY Mix 1/2 cup butter and 1 cup flour.

Add 3 beaten yolks, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 teaspoon lemon rind grated. 1/4 teaspoon salt. Mix. Press into 24 balls and place in refrigerator over-night. Then roll each ball into a four-inch circle on pastry cloth or wax paper. Spread with: Beat the 3 whites until stiff. Gradually add 1 cup granulated sugar. and fold in 1/4 lb. chopped nuts. Roll like jelly roll, place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake 15 minutes or until nicely browned in a 350-degree oven. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Nudlovy puding Baked Noodle Pudding 1 (8-oz.) pkg. medium wide noodles 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup cottage cheese 2 eggs, separated 1 egg, whole, mixed with % cup milk '/3 cup melted butter 1/2 cup tart jelly or 1 cup pitted cherries 1/2 teaspoon lemon rind 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional) Cook noodles in boiling salted water until soft; drain and butter with 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Line deep baking dish with layer of noodles; spread with jelly or fruit; put layer of prepared cottage cheese and the rest of noodles on top. Pour mixture of egg and milk over the pudding; brush with rest of melted butter and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Prepare cottage cheese by mixing it with 2 egg yolks, sugar, lemon rind. Add nuts and fold in 2 egg whites, beaten stiff.

POTATO CROWN CAKE [BABOVKA] 3/4 cup butter 1 cup sugar 4 egg yolks 1 cup mashed potatoes 2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 teaspoons baking powder 1 cup chopped nuts 1 teaspoon almond extract 4 beaten egg whites Cream butter and sugar, add egg yolks. Add 1 cup mashed potatoes.

(Potatoes should be cooked in jackets, peeled and mashed.) Add flour, salt, baking powder. Mix well. Add 1/2 of the nuts and flavoring. Then fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Grease a tube cake pan. Dust with the other 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts--sides and bottom of pan.

Place mixture in tube pan and bake at 350 degrees about one hour. When cool. remove from tube pan and dust with powdered sugar.

[God's Favors] 2 eggs, slightly beaten 2 cups flour 2 tablespoons cream (sweet or sour) 2 tablespoons rum or heavy wine 1 teaspoon salt Mix eggs with cream rum; add to flour and salt. stirring and kneading on

the floured board until smooth. Roll out thin as for noodles, cut in diamond shapes 3 by 3, make 2 one-inch slits in the middle of each piece and fry in deep fat on both sides. Remove to unglazed paper and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

ROSETTES 21/2 cups flour 1 egg 2 cups milk 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon confectioners sugar Mix flour, egg, milk, salt and stir.

Pre-heat Wesson oil in frying pan. Dip rosette iron in batter. Fry until brown.

Let cool on paper towel; sprinkle with confectioners sugar. For a special touch, put dot of jelly or jam in center of rosette.

There are 2 negative participles in Czech: 1) NE — nemluvim, nedelam, etc.

2) NI — nikdo, nic nijakk.

Two negatives do not make an

affirmative: Nedelim nic; neznam nikoho; nikdo nic nevi.

ANI is used for TARE in emphatic ne7at i ve: ani on to nevi.
