Life is like a ladder. Every step we take is either up or down.

There are some things your editor needs to call to our members' and readers' attention at this time in 1980.

Number one is the fact that this is about the third time since yours truly became editor 12 years ago that we have 53 Wednesdays in a year. That happens when January 1st is a Wednesday, then the 365th day (December 31st) is also a Wednesday; that has happened twice and we have not published one Vestnik that year. This year January 2nd was a Wednesday, however, this being leap year 1980, December 31st is the 366th day and the 53rd Wednesday so, it seems, that the December 24th issue Volume 68 Number 52 should be our last issue. Remember, this issue you are reading is December 3rd. Number 49,; so we should not have a Wednesday, December 31st issue. Keep that in mind, please.

Number two is the above and please write early; remember the mail is slowed and the holiday rush retards its delivery.

If you have any news to be published before January 7, 1981 get those in the mail EARLY. There will be a space of 2 weeks: Dec. 24 to Jan. 7, 1981.

** Sunday, November 23rd was the first anniversary of (SGA) Sokol Gymnastic Association of West's organization and it was celebrated at SPJST Lodge Jarornir No. 54, West with a Czech-style dinner and a pleasant of brief speeches, gymnastic exhibition, social hour and dance.

Your editor, as president of SGAothanks all for their presence. *** This is Thanksgiving Day and we are spending the day at home reading some proofs and trying to prepare some copy for Friday, November 28th because we can see that we will be pressed for copy and time due to two things: 1) The holiday and 2) the delay in the setting of the type for the Vestnik; we ask our members and readers to bear with us until the beginning of the new year 1981. We are sure it will improve; we will give you more details, later. You may find more fillers in the next few issues than usual, however, things will improve, we are sure. We hope everyone and their loved ones had a safe and healthy Thanksgiving holiday season. *44

Everyone is occasionally faced with unhappiness and at times bitter disillusionment. The easiest and most satisfactory way to meet these personal setbacks is to work out and believe in a philosophy which provides an antidote.

I have always believed that work is the best antidote for loneliness, boredom or sorrow.

A great lady of the theatre once said that she had a philosophy she had evolved over the years - one that had seen her through heartbreak and discouragement. "What looks like the end of the road in our personal experience," she said, "is only the turn in the road, the beginning of a new and more beautiful journey. Today is the new day. You will get out of it what you put into it. If you have made mistakes, even serious mistakes, there is always another chance for you. And supposing you have tried and failed again and again, you may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing called "failure" is not the falling down."

I have turned to these words many times myself. I hope they will mean as much to you as they have meant to me.

They were written by Mary Pickford. *** A fraternal organization is only as strong as the members are aware of the great need for the organization. Our members are the nucleus from which our leadership stems, our growth expands and our activities continue to come to the forefront.

Each member of our Society is an individual, but banded together we become a part of one of the largest fraternal societies in Texas. As

members of our Society we are not only protecting ourselves but we are most important protecting our families and as good fraternalists we are an asset to the community in which we live.

Each one of our lodges are just what the membership makes it. It can be an outstanding group in our community and a very important part of our social life or it can be just another organization that we belong to that no one but the membership ever hears from. Our lodges should be among the leaders in all activities that are good for the community in which they reside.

Instead of standing by and complaining about not receiving recognition for something that we have done, let's all take the attitude, "Thanks, or not thanks, our job was well done 'and we enjoyed helping our lodge."

Our fraternal lodge work is interesting, once you get involved in it and one derives a lot of satisfaction from it, and friendly cooperation will make it become appreciated and dear to us all if you are a participant and not just a bystander.

NEWSBRIEFS Brother Frank Henzen passed away in a Dallas hospital November 25, 1980.

He was an active member of Lodge No. 84 where he was the leader of the Choral Group and he also was an accomplished musician and performed with the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra.

SUPREME LODGE

LODGE OFFICERS' WORKSHOPS 1981 To All Concerned: Based on precedence and recent actions of the Supreme Lodge, the following will be in effect for the workshops in 1981: 1) Officers will be those as before, including the lodge treasurer, or some other person designated by the lodge.

2) Sections will include lodge presidents and vice presidents in one section, lodge secretaries in another, and financial secretaries in another. The treasurers may attend any or all of the three sections, moving to them only at the start of the sessions or during the breaks.

3) Mileage for one car only from each lodge, 5.30 a mile, however, if one of the locations is not convenient for the officers of a particular lodge on the date scheduled, they may attend the workshops at one of the other locations, but mileage would still be paid for only one car from each lodge at any one of the three locations. Anyone else wishing to attend these workshops, other than mentioned here, is welcome to do so, furnishing their own transportation.

These workshops held in previous years were proven to be mutually beneficial.

They will deal primarily with lodge procedures and administration. We are not including workshops on youth work or insurance per se, since these two areas are adequately covered in district and state seminars and training classes.

We must remember that our national and state laws define a Fraternal Benefit Society as "Having a lodge system with ritualistic work." The more efficient our lodges are, the better we are insuring and guaranteeing our future as a Fraternal Benefit Society. The United States Internal Revenue Code specifies two primary requisites for a Fraternal Benefit Society: "a) Must operate on the lodge system, and b) Provide for the payment of life, sick, accident or other benefits to members or their dependents." Thus we see the specific reference to a "lodge system" and it is through the lodge system that we must operate and improve

Wednesday, December 3, 1980 our services. It behooves every officer mentioned above to attend these workshops as a part of his duty and obligation in being an officer in the local lodge, and especially since we will be operating under the amended by-laws of the XXIII Convention. We will all learn through these workshops. In the meantime, we would welcome suggestions that any of you might have about what topic or topics to include in any of the sections at the workshops in 1981.

Those of you out in the field and on the local lodge level may have some definite ideas as to what needs discussing. If you do, let us know.

Dear Members and Friends, The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 35, Elk was called to order on Sunday, November 9 at 3 p.m. by President Henry Breitkruetz Sr. Ronald Steinke led the Pledge of Allegiance.

We were glad to have as visitors: Kathy Kubitza and Kimberly, Evelyn Bunkowski, Tillie Matus and Karen Kubitza.

Secretary Albert Banik read the minutes of the October meeting. They were approved as read.

President Breitkruetz acknowledged a thank-you note received from the St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Elk. Henry Breitkruetz Jr. read the treasurer's report. This was approved as read.

Rosemarie Banik, youth leader, gave the youth club report. She said the club had set a date to go out to eat. They planned to go to Leslie's Chicken Shack.

Parents are invited to come, too, but will be asked to pay their own way. She also stated that the Christmas program practice will be held Saturday, December 6 at 5 p.m. Sister Banik welcomed a new member to the youth club, Becky Crockett. Those having birthdays in November were Helen Dulock, Edna Tepe, Inez Zalman, Pam Thun, Inez Breitkruetz, Albert Banik and Lloyd Steinke. We wish them all many more

Happy Birthdays.

The committee chairmen all gave their reports-Kitchen-Barbara Pavelka, Entertainment-Albert Banik, RefreshmentGene Edward Pavelka, and Building Chairman-Rudolph Vicha.

We didn't have any new members this month but we had one conversion, James D. Hurst and one paid-up policy, Bernice Schiller.

There was no old business. Under new business the meeting was turned over tot the Nominating Committee to conduct the election of officers for the year of 1981. Rosemarie Banik was the chairman. The election went very smoothly. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

This is a reminder of our Christmas party which will be held on our next lodge meeting which will be December 14 at 3 p.m. Our party will be combined with the lodge meeting which will include the youth Christmas program, recognition of the senior members, the meal, dancing, and, of course, a visit from Santa. The turkey and dressing will be furnished by the lodge but every member who plans to attend is asked to bring vegetables and a dessert enough for your family. Due to inflationary times, those who want mixed drinks, it will be BYOB.

LODGE

NO. 88, HOUSTON

Thanksgiving Day is in the past and 16 families enjoyed their dinner with one of the 16 turkeys given away at the Social Night Thursday. This generosity will be repeated, again, Thursday at the Social Night December 18, 1980. Be sure and come out and hear your name called to receive a nice plump butterball turkey for your Christmas dinner; I assure you it is possible; I was lucky and went home with one of the delicious birds, even if it took me 15 years to win one. Remember, December 18, 1980.

My Thanksgiving Day was spent in the circle of my family in San Antonio, Tx. wth my granddaughter Sandy and her husband Pat Segner and their two daughters; Angie, 6 and Brenda, 2; also her parents Henry and Della Olexa and their other daughter Sharon and husband David Ainsworth with children Jennifer, 4 and Ryan, 1. When I think of all my blessings, I bow my head and thank God. I hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving as I did.

In my report of the Czech Play, I omitted Sister Anna Karas, a very important member to the cast. Anna served as the prompter. If any of you ever were in a play you know how important a prompter is to the players on the stage.

The actors are not professionals; they work for their living during the day and, at night, they attend rehearsals and the prompter is their prop; in case they need her she is there and it is not easy.

It was brought to my attention that Brother Ben Schiller is now at home from the hospital recuperating after his accident in their backyard where his wife Betty found him unconscious under the pecan tree; she had to rush him to Parkway Hospital where he spent three weeks. Now he is at home under the care of Betty and she takes good care of Ben; we wish you a speedy recovery.

Sister Agnes and her husband Eldon Peterson took off for a week to visit with Agnes' daughter Linda Rivers and found her in the- hospital Undergoing surgery for gall bladder. They stayed a week in Louisiana until Linda came home from the hospital; she is doing fine.

Again, we bow our heads in sorrow in the passing away of our Brother W.J. (Bill) Rezek well-known at Lodge No. 88.

Bill passed away at home Monday, November 17, 1980 after a short illness.

Wednesday, December 3, 1980 LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON

President Mildred Holeman presided at our regular monthly meeting November 10th. All members present stood in a moment of respect to departed members James C. Bankston, Geraldine Chometa, and Angelyn C. Goodson.

Mrs. Albina Hilsher was the only visitor. We always enjoy having her with us.

The secretary had the pleasure of reading a note of thanks from Sister Ida Hanka who is missed very much at our lodge.

Sister Wanda Kennedy, brought forward the members to be initiated and introduced them individually to the membership. President Holeman conducted the initiation. First Vice President Tillie Helmcamp gave a brief history of the SPJST and welcomed the new members.

Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg reported that the Beseda groups will be dancing in Schulenburg at the International Christmas Village December 6. She announced that the lodge Annual Christmas Program will be on December 15 and invited all to come; both the Choral Group and the Concert Orchestra will perform. Sister Wahlberg expressed her thanks to the popcorn committee for their dedicated hard work.

This committee consists of Brothers King Hegwood, Bill Malak and George Taake.

Entertainment Committee Treasurer Marian Mikes gave her report followed

by Chairman Harley Cox who announced upcoming entertainment; namely, the Christmas Dance with the Glen Miller Orchestra playing on December 13, and the New Year's Eve Dance with the Texas Dutchmen playing polkas and mixed ballroom music. Advance tickets for the New Year's Dance go on sale Friday, December 4, at $7.50 per person.

Choral Club President Evelyn Vornsand reported that this group is busy rehearsing for their appearance at the Schulenburg International Christmas Village on December 6 and the Needville Rest Home where they will entertain the guests on December 22.

Dramatic Club President Marceil Malak was pleased to report that the Czech Play was a great success. She gave credit to Sister Rose Sicner who directed, as well as the cast and all those who worked behind the scenes.

Members on the sick list were Brother Frank Bohac and Sister Katherine Knapick. Others mentioned were Sister Delores Prochazka of the Crosby lodge and Sister Mary Ouider's mother, Mrs. Ella Bogs. We wish all of them a quick

recovery.

President Holeman commented on the need for volunteers at various hospitals.

Sister Mary Kosut had checked into this and will be in charge of this effort, assisted by Sister Pearl Hanka.

The president thanked all who helped with Czech Day which was a great success.

Guide Helen Hegwood read a list of November birthdays and led the members in singing "Happy Birthday."

She also read a list of anniversary couples, two of which were celebrating 51st anniversaries. These were Ann and Joe Elzner and Louise and Ed Kadlecek.

Refreshment donor was Brother A.T. Zajicek.

Door prizes were won by Brothers Joe Fusig, Ed Miculka, and Bill Vornsand.

The special prize from Liberty Savings and Loan was won by Sister Margaret Allbritton.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY

Dear Members and Guests: I guess most of you have wondered why there were no reports from our Lodge No. 74. I guess it's just because I did not feel like writing; well, here I am again.

The month of October was a very successful month, with members' help adding to our lodge, and Society; also the progress of lots of improvements that have been done in the lodge with a new floor and several other improvements which makes all of us feel proud of the success. All officers are performing well, and are doing the best in carrying out duties that are assigned to them.

All officers will be elected to care for the lodge for the year 1981; December 8th, be sure and come to vote for the lodge officer who is your choice, the time is 7:30 p.m.

The games that were taking place here at the lodge every Thursday are being discontinued until after the first of the year. You will be notified when they will start again.

It has been appreciated by all who have taken part in all our activities and we are looking forward for even greater success in the future.

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving.

Dear Members and Friends: President Woytek called the meeting to order. The 108 members present joined him in the Pledge to the Flag. Following roll call of officers, minutes of last general meeting and special board meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer Sharon Holman gave a report and passed out profit and loss statements.

Financial Secretary, Ella Mae Woytek, read the list of new members currently being considered and made a motion that they be accepted. Motion carried.

Brother Oman announced that the last night for 1980 Games will be December 9. The Games crew will be off for Christmas holidays until January.

Mr. Eldridge spoke to the group about starting a Square Dance program and asked that anyone interested please contact the lodge so that an idea could be gotten on the number interested.

The chairman of the Nominating Committee, Brother John Kelgin, introduced their nominees for each office and Board. The following were elected to serve for 1981 officers and three new directors of Lodge 187: President - Red Oman 1st Vice President - Albert Lange 2nd Vice President: Gene Parker Secretary - Rubie Volek Treasurer - Sharon Holman Financial Secretary -Ella Mae Woytek Youth Leaders - Ronnie and Susan Woytek Directors - Bill Holman, Wilbert Nelson and John Kelgin.

The Nominating Committee also passed out a list of committees and individuals interested in chairing these committees.

A vote for these chairpersons will be held at the December meeting.

Brother Carl Burkland won the $25.00 door prize. Sister JoAnn Oman won the drawing for the two free courtesy tickets.

The meeting was adjourned. Everyone present enjoyed the delicious covered dish supper.

8 LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA Dear Members and Friends: Our regular November meeting was held as scheduled on the second Wednesday, November 12th. I am afraid some of you are forgetting about our meetings. Our next regular and annual meeting will be held December 10th. We hope all of you can come.

All of us are very busy and who isn't?

Our second Vice President Margie Nelms was in charge of the Halloween party for the Faith Memorial Nursing Home in Pasadena. It was well-attended and enjoyed very much. Thank you, Margie for a job well done.

We were so sorry to have missed the retirement party for Judge Ed Miller.

The invitation got misplaced in the mail and came too late. I hope Brother Miller stays busy doing many things that he never had time for before.

The covered dish supper for the San Jacinto College Czech Club November 21 was well-attended and enjoyed by all.

The food was very good. We especially enjoyed our guests, Mr. and Mrs. Vincenc Konarik from Czechoslovakia; they are the parents of Ludmila Orsak who is the wife of Benard Orsak. He is a Czech teacher at San Jacinto College.

They plan to return to Czechoslovakia soon after Thanksgiving.

Our lodge is continually making progress; sometimes it is slow and the road is rough but we are not standing still. We will let everyone know when we will start building our new hall. We should already be started because prices are sky-rocketing and it is going to cost more the longer it is delayed. We are thankful for our faithful workers. We welcome all helpers; don't be bashful.

Come on out and lighten someone else's load.

I am hoping to be able to do a whole lot more than I am doing. I like to work with people. Just about the time when I got well, Joe, my husband, was injured in a boating accident. This happened August 12th and he has been in bed since that time, except for the little walking on croutches in the house the last two weeks. Because of two fractured vertebrae, he cannot sit longer than 3 or 4 minutes. He is very patient and doesn't complain. The doctors told us that it would take a long time. Our grandson helps him pass the time away. He is 21 months old and is Betty Jo's and Bill Yonley's son. We are lucky that they are living with us; otherwise, I would not be able to teach school. Betty Jo takes care of her daddy during the day. Donna Lynn, our younger daughter, is teaching also. We both come home after school

about the same time and cook, etc.

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. We stayed at home and had guests for Thanksgiving dinner, usually we have two or three guests from foreign lands and they tell us that is their first American Thanksgiving.

Members of Lodge No. 172, don't forget the December regular and annual meeting for December 10th. There will be a Christmas dance and covered dish supper December 20th. Watch for details.

Dear Members: The November regular lodge meeting got started at 7:30 p.m. President Jerry Janek called on Bobby Smajstrla to lead the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers showed all but two officers present.

Secretary Kitty Rippin read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were accepted as read. Sister Mydell Grochoske read the minutes from the previous Board of Trustees' meeting.

The financial report was given by Mydell Grochoske and treasurer's report was given by Leroy Hampton.

Sunshine Committee reported sending three cards: two get-well cards were sent to Doug Stanley's grandmother and a sympathy card was sent to Jess Taylor on the death of his father, and other get-well card was sent to Deta Butler, mother of Truman Butler.

Special thanks go to the members who donated and planted trees and shrubs around the hall grounds; it really makes the hall stand-out and look better.

Serving on the Nominating Committee this year are: Leroy Hampton, Mydell Grochoske, Joe Hurtik and B.J. Russell.

Door prize was won by Tim Russell.

The money prize which, was won at $25, was won by Eddie and Judy Smajstrla; next week it will start at $5 again.

Well, members, don't forget our December 4th meeting. It is your chance to vote for the new leaders of the hall for 1981. I hope to see a big turnout.

Dear Members: I Age Karel Jonas Mill hold its annual meeting on the 39th anniversary of the "Day of Infamy", December 7th, or as it is called by many veterans "Pearl Harbor Dap" I he meeting will start at 2 p.m.

CST in its hall on the corner of Main and Leveridge Streets. The agenda will cover the election of officers (to serve the lodge in 1 981 ). the regular reports and other reports covering items from building repair through the SPJST Convention.

After the meeting there will be the customary "gathering of the clan", so to speak. We hope to have something special on the food fair.

In the November 2nd meeting the normal reports were covered with the inclusion of the October reports. All were accepted as read. A special report was made on the District VI meeting, held in Moravia, October 5th. The door prize was won by Bro. Ladik Sabrsula. The "Kaffee Klatsch", after the meeting, although late in starting, was relished by those present. Sisters Haverda, Sperlik, Sabrsula, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval furnished the trimmings to make the sandwiches and beverages, furnished by the lodge, a meal.

Now for a very important reminder.

Starting with the January 1981 meeting, all meetings, again, will count toward a member's eligibility to become a delegate to the 1984 convention.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting November 16, at 2:30 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center. Linda Treumar led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Jean Dorotik recited the prayer.

Contest winners were: Ages 6-9: 1st Marcy Dorotik; (10-12) 1st Jean Dorotik, 2nd Chris Krpec, 3rd Michelle Srubar; and (13-17) 1st Vicki Dorotik.

Poems were read and games were played. We, then, worked on craft which painting Christmas ornaments; also, we had a birthday party for Assistant Youth Leader Mrs. Kahanek.

Fraternally, Jean Dorotik (12) (11-27-80) Mrs. Marie Pavelka, Ms. Henrietta Cervenka [their Texas cousin] and Mrs. Vlasta Dubjak when they visited the editor's office. Their visit was enjoyably entertaining.

YOUTH SECTION Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members and Friends, Our next meeting will be held Sunday, December 7 after the adult meeting. We will have a covered dish supper and we will also have a Christmas program plus exchange gifts,

so each girl bring a girl's gift and each boy bring a 1:loy's gift; if you bring friends, bring a gift for them, also.

Monday, November 17, our club had a Thanksgiving party. We had refreshments first and then we had fun swinging at a pinata which was the shape of Snoopy. Billy Pfeiffer had the final swing, Snoopy fell apart and we all grabbed for the goodies inside.

I am looking forward to Christmas and all the get-togethers.

In December we usually go to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home to sing carols, so be thinking of what date would best suit

CLINTON B. POLANSKY, who passed away Sunday, November 2, 1980 in Denton, Texas, at the age of 62 years.

Brother Polansky was a member of Lodge No 154 since 1955.

Survivors include his wife, Sister Frances Polansky of Irving; daughter, Catherine Polansky of Denton; mother, Clara Polansky; sisters, Loree Rost of Giddings, Lynn Garrett of Austin.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m., Monday at Colonial Chapel in Irving.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Irving.

Pallbearers were Allen Strube, Jim Hrabal, Fred Ruth, Ed Mikes, Al Sellmeyer and Pete Fappen.

Interment was at Calvary Hill in Dallas.

who passed away November 8, 1980 in a Victoria hospital, at the age of 82 years.

Brother Krause was born 24 September 1898 in Bohemia. He was a resident of Inez for the past 80 years.

He was a charter member of Lodge No. 143 and was a lodge officer over many years. He worked as an SPJST sales representative and also was a retired farmer.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

November 10 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Inez. The Rev. V.J. Bily officiated and burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of McCabe-Carruth Funeral Home.

Surviving are a number of cousins.

Brother Roznovak was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion, served in the Korean conflict and was a member of the SPJST. His family is a 100% Lodge No 29 member family.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge No. 9, Snook, wish to express our deep sympathy to the family of our departed brother NORMAN D. JARRELL, who passed away October 1, 1980, at 12:30 p.m. in the Memorial Hospital of Galveston County.

Brother Jarrell was born 23 July 1909 in Belton, Texas. He attended New Mexico Military Institute, from which he graduated in 1928. He also attended the University of Texas and in 1935 he received a degree in Medicine from UTMB in Galveston, Texas. He served his internship in Temple at King's Daughters Hospital.

He was married to Nanette Kahn. She preceded him in death.

Dr. Jarrell moved to Texas City in 1942 and became partner in the Danforth Clinic there, which later 'became the Danforth Memorial Hospital.

Services for Brother Jarrell were held on October 4, 1980, at the First Presbyterian Church in Texas City. Dr. Henry Quinius, assisted by Rev. Allan C. Anderson and Rev. Bob Bowles conducted the services. Burial followed at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Velma Jarrell; his two sons, Norman David Jarrell, stationed with the U.S. Army in Mannheim, Germany and Donald Jarrell of Van Nuys, California; his two daughters, Jane Brooks of Huntsville and Gene Hiedrich of South Daytona, Florida; two stepsons, Wayne and Bill Ellis of Texas City; one

sister, Velma Childers of Harlingen; seven grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

Funeral services for Sister Reynolds were held at 2 p.m. April 26, at the Strickland Funeral Chapel in Somerville. Rev. Howard Adkinson officiated.

Burial followed in the Giesenshlay Cemetery in Snook.

Her survivors include: her husband, Cecil T. Reynolds of Snook; son, Tommy Reynolds of Snook; daughter, Tonya Forburger of Heaverner, Oklahoma; sister, Joy Ruth Bradley of Portales, New Mexico; two grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

Sister Kneblik was born 13 December 1894 in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia and moved to Texas at the age of two. She was married to Paul W. Kneblik who died in 1961. She was a member of the Temple Brethren Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Wilson Malcik of Temple; three sons, Raymond Kneblik of Garland, Theodore Kneblik of New Mexico and Lee Roy Kneblik of Cleburne; fourteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He had been an SPJST member since December 1933; when Lodge No. 152, Aqua Duke disbanded January, 1970, he transferred his membership to Lodge No. 117, Robstown where he was a member until his death.

Monday, June 23 at the Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel in Alice. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, June 24, in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, where he was a member. Graveside services were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Shiner Catholic Church Cemetery.

age 73, who passed away Monday, August 11, 1980 in a Kingsville hospital after a long illness.

He was a longtime resident of Kingsville. He was born November 7, 1906, the son of the late Jim and Barbara Farek. Before retirement several years ago, he had worked as a highway foreman for Kleberg County.

He became an SPJST member in September 1925 and in November 1976 when Lodge No. 118, Kingsville disbanded, he transferred his membership to Lodge No. 117, Robstown where he was a member until his death. In the past he had served as an officer in Lodge No. 118. November 14, 1927 he married Mary Pustejovsky, who survives him.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m.

Wednesday, August 13 at Turcotte Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Scheffel officiating. Interment was at Rest Haven Cemetery in Kingsville.

ITEMS OF INTEREST WESTERN JEANS GET SHOT IN SEAT Western jean's latest "shot in the seat" is the one stamped "celebrity."

Spurred by the popularity of recent western movies, TV shows and music, many manufacturers have recruited an array of celebrities to endorse their product, Becky Saunders, a clothing specialist, says in talking about one of today's newest fashion looks.

Mrs. Saunders is on the home economics staff of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

She points to examples of popular celebrities including Willie Nelson, Mickey Gilley, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Burt Reynolds, "J.R.Ewing," Larry Gatlin, Charlie Daniels, Hank Williams and Larry Mahon as part of today's jean-fashion trend.

And there are some speciality labels even banking on past images, such as John Wayne and Buddy Holly.

The celebrity endorsement most often appears as a name or picture on the label, along with recognizable decorative word(s) or design(s) on the back. pocket.

As with designer jeans, prices often are higher for celebrity versions than the plain traditional jeans.

LOOK FOR TEXAS CHRISTMAS TREES

Don't just buy any Christmas tree this year--buy a Texas-grown Christmas tree.

"While the supply of Texas Christmas trees is still short, more and more of them are coming on the market," points out James W. Chandler of Overton, area forester with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System. "Some 30,000 should be ready for market this year," he predicts.

18 "There are some 225 Christmas tree growers in Texas at present with about 1,350 acres in production. At 900 to 1,000 trees per acre, that's more than a million trees," he says.

Most trees are being grown in East Texas and are Virginia pines, notes Chandler. A few tree farms are also being established in central and western areas with the variety Pinus eldarica which is more tempered to drought conditions.

According to the forester, many trees were lost to drought this past summer, even where intensive . management was carried out.

"Christmas tree plantations need plenty of care and management," emphasizes Chandler. "Trees usually reach market size in three to five years and may be sold wholesale to civic groups and other retail outlets or on a choose-and-cut basis."

Texas-grown Christmas trees offer a lot of advantages over those shipped in from the Great Lake States and the Pacific Northwest, says the forester.

These advantages are mainly freshness, fragrance and novelty. Most trees shipped to Texas have to be cut about two months earlier while Texas trees can be cut only a short time before being offered for sale.

"Some 5 million Christmas trees are sold in Texas each year," says Chandler. "This represents more than $50 million in sales. As Texas production increases, Texas-grown trees will take a larger portion of these sales."

WHEN ADULT CHILDREN MOVE BACK HOME When adult children move back home, set up clear "ground rules" to make the transition easier, advises a family resource management specialist, Nancy Granovsky.

"Even written lists or mini-contracts can go a long way in helping families adjust to these household changes," she says.

Mrs. Granovsky is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

Economic pressures are the force behind many households doubling up, the specialist explains.

Three age groups seem most likely to make a move. Young adults or teenagers, 40-45-year-old singles (many of whom are recently divorced or legally separated) and those 70 years or older.

Rising rents and utility bills, high

property taxes and the high cost of household maintenance are blamed for this trend.

Many young adults feel the economic pinch as they try to manage on minimal starting salaries.

This results in many adult children moving home.

Families unaccustomed to having their children at home could experience conflict unless certain mutually agreed upon ground rules about home management are established, she cautions.

Some of the daily living routines to work out include: PEOPLE SCHEDULES Accommodate different work schedules so that living patterns and needs of all family members are respected.

Retain independence with mutual respect for other people's time demands.

MEALS Establish an equitable system for shopping, food preparation and clean-up. Decide how many meals will include the entire family.

HOUSEHOLD EXPENSES Decide what financial support adult children will contribute to household expenses. Some household expenses will increase as a result of additional members.

LAUNDRY Establish laundry rules. Some young adults may show a tendency to revert to pre-adult behavior when "someone else" did the laundry.

HOUSEHOLD TASKS Evaluate what must be done to maintain family standards for household care and who will do it. Plan to share tasks.

Every family situation is different, so the decisions about home management will naturally differ, Mrs. Granovsky explains.

What is important is that all parties sit down together to discuss the situation that brings them together and how they can live in harmony without fracturing independence or family relations, she adds.

MANAGE RANGES FOR LIVESTOCK, WILDLIFE One of the basic principles in managing rangeland is to balance the

number of animals, both livestock and wildlife, with the amount of available forage.

Balancing the number of animals with forage produced calls for flexibility, points our Dr. B.J. Ragsdale, range specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

In a livestock operation, flexibility can be built into the program to help overcome drouth situations where forage availability drops below the number of animals which are being grazed on a range area. A rancher can buy feed or sell some animals during times when grazing is poor.

But what can be done about the wildlife situation? Law regulates the number of animals that can be harvested, and tradition has resulted in a predominant harvest of male animals, or bucks, in the case of white-tailed deer. Basically, deer and other large wildlife feed on vegetation, especially native plants, notes Ragsdale. As deer numbers have increased, competition for available preferred vegetation has caused food supplies to deteriorate.

This has resulted in low quality deer.

Both landowners and hunters have a vital role in improving the food supply and complying with the principle of balancing the number of grazing animals with forage production. Only through the manipulation of wildlife populations through harvest can the number of wildlife animals be brought back into balance with forage production. The other alternative of reducing numbers is through starvation.

With the 1980 hunting season at hand, Ragsdale advises landowners to consider harvesting surplus deer. A landowner can work with hunters who have leased his ranch for hunting to insure that does as well as surplus bucks are harvested. This will move the buel-.-doe ratio closer to the desired one to-one and will reduce overall numbers.

While the recent drouth has partially reduced the deer population, proper harvesting is important to reduce future waste, believes the range specialist.

As surplus deer are harvested, more forage will be available for remaining animals. This will improve their quality, there will be less pressure on forage plants, and rangeland and wildlife habitats will improve, contends Ragsdale.

Those who wish to cut down on sugar use should read ingredient labels on packaged foods, she recommends.

Often listed are not only sugar but sucrose, fructose, lactose, glucose, dextrose, corn syrup, corn sweetners, natural sweetners, invert sugar or honey.

They all add up to sugar, the specialist points out Foods high in sugar can increase the risk of tooth decay.

Since sugar adds calories and little or no nutrients, foods high in sugar tend to have fewer vitamins and minerals per calorie eaten.

Refined sugars and other sweetners provided as much as 18 percent of the total calories in the average U.S. diet in 1979, Dr. Postel explains.

Household use of sugar has declined from 52 pounds per person per year in 1913 to 22 pounds in 1978.

However, during the same period, annual sugar use by the food and beverage industry increased from 27 to 70 pounds per capita, she adds.

Let rise. Scald the '/2 cup milk, add sugar and butter and mix. Cool to lukewarm. Then add egg, yeast mixture, and the flour gradually. Add lemon rind, tufts and raisins. (Raisins should stand in hot water, and be drained before adding to dough). Knead on floured board until elastic. Let rise until double in bulk and form into a houska (twist) or round coffee cake. Let rise again and bake 50 to 60 minutes in a 375-degree oven.

Let stand 12 hours in bowl. Roll to inch thickness. Cut out forms with cookie cutters. Brush tops with slightly beaten egg white and place half of a blanched almond in center of each. Put on buttered baking sheet and bake in a moderate oven (325-350 degrees) until light brown.

20 BOBALKY [Braided Bread] Use dough from the bread dough recipe below. Pinch off a portion of dough, roll out on floured board by hand to make about a half inch in diameter.

Place on greased cookie sheet. Cut with the edge of teaspoon into small pieces.

Let rise for 10 minutes. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes, or until lightly browned. When cool, break. Cook 1% cups ground poppyseed in 3/4 cup water for 10 minutes.Boil 3 cups milk, add 1 cup sugar, and pour over the poppyseed and mix well. Add to the bobalky, mix well, and serve.

Cover and set in warm place. Do not permit dough to stand in a draft. Let dough rise 2 hours. Roll out on floured board and divide into portions for braided bread. Cover and let stand 15 minutes. Braid, place in buttered pans.

Allow to rise until doubled in bulk.

Brush with melted butter. Bake at 350 F for 10 minutes, then raise temperature to 375 F and bake for one hour: Yield: 2 loaves 6 x 10.

Toxic histories of cancer victims would provide a sound background for cancer education and prevention efforts, believe panelists in a cancer meeting called by State Health Commissioner Dr. Robert Bernstein.

The meeting at the. Texas Department of Health (TDH) brought input from physicians, TDH and federal officials, private physicians and citizens, and from educators.

"Reducing the impact of this unfortunate health problem requires a broad scale attack by all interested parties," said Dr. Bernstein.

The meeting was aimed at defining the role of the Texas Department of Health in working with other groups, institutions, agencies and industry in cancer prevention and control.

The increase in the number of chemicals in industry, increasing exposure of workers to possible cancer-causing agents and release of chemicals into the environment were cited during the discussions.

While agreeing that information on toxic substances in the workplace would provide a base for life-saving, educational efforts, the participants agreed that comprehensive, uniform information is unavailable at this time.

Many variables exist, such as the type of chemical, length of exposure, amount of exposure in the environment, and knowledge as to the cumulative effects of chemicals.

D.C., said there is not that much research information

available on toxic chemicals. There are, however, good studies on cancer caused by asbestos exposure. The effects of asbestos coupled with smoking is five times greater than asbestos-caused cancer alone, she said.

While information on animal studies is available, human data is limited in terms of environmental exposure, said George Pettigrew, with the Dallas office of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). He noted that toxic information is available on some 35,000 chemicals and that 2,000 chemicals have been identified with some effects on humans. Determining the relationship of chemical exposure to human cancer is a different matter, he said.

Of all the cancer causes, smoking was repeated time and time again as the top factor in cancer, as well as in other diseases.

In a meeting with smoking employees of TDH, held before the cancer meeting, Dr. Bernstein said, "Cigarette smoking is the single most important preventable factor in illness, disability, and death in this country. All in all, smoking contributes to 350,000 premature deaths in the United States each year."

"A recent report of the Surgeon General,- said Dr. Bernstein, "says that smokier oosts this country $27 billion a year in medical care, absenteeism, accidents and decreased productivity. Smoking men miss 33 percent more working days than nonsmoking men, while smoking women miss 45 percent more work days than nonsmoking women."

He noted that the lung cancer rate among women had increased 500 percent over the past two decades.

Lung cancer is expected to overtake breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in this decade if current trends continue. said Dr. Bernstein.

Allen Jr., chief of the TDH Bureau of Personal Health Services, 40,000 new cases of cancer and 20,000 cancer deaths are reported annually in Texas. "One of five deaths in Texas last year was due to cancer," he said.

The Texas Department of Health has a wide range of cancer-related activities.

Among these is operation of the Texas Cancer Registry, a statewide cancer data system. Currently, 150 institutions are in the registry system, including 128 hospitals of more than 100 beds, 17 hospitals under 100 beds, and five radiation treatment centers.

The cancer registry system identifies the incidence and prevalence of cancer in the state and provides a mechanism of followup. By determining patterns of cancer incidence, it is an invaluable tool in directing preventive efforts to those environments, geographic areas, and population subgroups where they are likely to prove most effective.

The cancer registry gives service to the medical profession and hence to the cancer patient, provides information for planning control measures, evaluates treatment and screening programs, conducts epidemiological studies, and provides education of the public. Core staff and circuit-riding abstractors who visit participating hospitals have collected cancer data on more than 76,000 new cancer cases during the past three years.

Saving Energy, Money For Next Season Now that the boat is back in the garage and the camping trailer has been cleaned and winterized, have the batteries that supply power to these . vehicles also been properly stored?

Many people needlessly experience starting problems at the beginning of each recreational season, simply because they don't know how to store their batteries properly. For instance, according to Mark Stump, product manager for Gould, Inc. — makers of Action Pack deep cycle and Super Crank starting batteries, the worst thing a boat owner can do is to leave a discharged battery in storage for five or six months.

Stump offers the following four simple steps to store a battery properly and maintain its useful life: 1. Check the water level and recharge.

Any battery that will not be used for extended periods should be fully recharged before being stored. When a battery is stored in a discharged state, sulfate deposits form in the battery and prevent full recharging.

Excessive sulfa tio n causes permanent damage to the battery.

Before recharging, check the electrolyte level. The level should always be maintained between the top of the battery plates and the bottom of the vent cap openings. Add water if needed. Although distilled water is preferred, tap water is acceptable if it does not have a high mineral content. Check the battery's state of charge with an hydrometer.

2. Clean the battery exterior.

National Involvement Gets Energy Bandwagon Rolling The energy bandwagon, ridden at one point only by homeowners who were chased by runaway heating and cooling costs, has found new direction and momentum.

Real estate professionals, savings and loan institutions and utilities have all jumped on board in 1980 with innovative programs that directly benefit those hardest hit by rising energy prices — homeowners.

The National Association of Realtors is encouraging local real estate agents to provide information on the energy-saving features of listed homes to prospective customers. Savings and loans are stepping up loan programs promoting energy conservation in both new and existing homes. And the U.S. Department of Energy is overseeing implementation of the Residential Conservation Service program with utility companies nationwide.

Despite this recent flourish of activity, it was homeowners themselves who got the energy bandwagon rolling, helping spread "energy conservation" across the country. Those undertaking such energy-saving measurer, as caulking, weather stripping and insulating were rewarded for their initiative with a tax credit under the Federal Energy Act of 1978. This tax credit recently has been extended through 1985, and the maximum credit allowance increased for renewable energy source equipment expenditures.

Now The Dow Chemical Company has learned that these same homeowners are in a promising position to reap a valuable long-term return from their energysaving investments in addition to the immediate dividends of reduced fuel bills.

In one of the most comprehensive studies on home energy issues ever undertaken, 95 percent of those homeowners surveyed believed that energy-saving features were an important consideration in the purchase of a new home.

The energy savers even ranked

ahead of such features as landscaping and wall-to-wall carpeting in the survey, released in 1980.

Eighty-three percent of the national sample of 3,000 homeowners said well-insulated, energy-efficient homes may be worth more at resale. Similar results were found in an earlier survey, released in 1979, in which 66 percent of the real estate brokers and 78 percent of the real estate appraisers questioned said well-insulated homes are worth more at resale.

Brokers estimated that a wellinsulated home could be worth an average of 9 percent more at resale; appraisers estimated a 5 percent resale bonus.

Both surveys were conducted by Opinion Research Corporation, an independent research firm commissioned

by Dow. Recognizing this strong, prevailing conservation consciousness amongst consumers, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) has undertaken a program that encourages Realtors nationwide to identify home energy efficient features for prospective buyers.

NAR hopes to persuade its Realtors to include average monthly fuel expenditures and energy-saving features as part of the listing sheet information for each home on the market (though it has no control at the local level).

Realtors will have the opportunity to learn about energy conservation measures through NAR training programs. Their training will cover such topics as the level of wall, ceiling and foundation insulation recommended in respective climate zones as well as the benefits of optimum insulation systems.

Namestek ministra zahranienich veci Ceskoslovenske socialisticke republiky (CSSR) Milog Vejvoda, yedouci Ceskoslovenske delegace na Druhe konferenci o uplatnovani Smlouvy o negifeni iadernYch zbrani. ktera se konala v Zeneve, po navratu do Prahyprohlasil: Konference meta v soueasne mezinarodnri situaci mimdadnY gznam, protde Smlouva o negifeni jadernych zbrani je jednou z nejdfileiitej gich smluv uplynuleho obdobi. Plati deset let a sehrala vyznamnou roll v boji za uvolflovani mezinarodniho napeti. 0 vyznamu konference svedei i poselstvi Leonida Breineva, ktere bylo freastniky konference pfijato s velkYm zajmem a porozumenim.

Ceskoslovenska delegace zamefila pozornost na smlouvu jako nastroj pro dalgi Uspegna jednani o odzbrojeni. Byli jsme dale pfipraveni ptisobit v oblasti miroveho vyditi jaderne energie. Proto byla nag e delegace sloiena nejen z diplomatil, ale take z odbornikil v oblasti jaderne energie.
