Czech Dancers of West

The Czech Dancers Of West and their prize-winning float. They won first place in the Westfest parade and later in the Giddings Birthday Festival. They have really worked hard on the float and danced at many occasions in 1980. The float is self-propelled.

Nearly all are SPJST members and are a fine group. More pictures in this issue.

Sunday, November 23rd the Sokol Gymnastic Association will be celebrating their first anniversary at SPJST Lodge Jaromir No. 54, West, with a nice program planned for all of those attending. We will publish the program of the day in coming issues of our Vestnik. The officers and members and, especially, our gymnasts are proud of their unit and look forward to this day; please be present to help celebrate the occasion with them.

The program will begin with a Czech-style meal served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prepared as only the Czech and Moravian cooks of West can prepare plus pastry of all sorts. Pastry and sandwiches to be served also in the afternoon as supply permits.

There will be a one hour program of initiation of the unit into the ASO (American Sokol Organization) by national officials and some short remarks.

A one-hour Sokol gymnastic program will follow.

A social hour will follow the gymnastic performance to be followed by a dance free to anyone holding one of the tickets being sold on the prizes to be given away.

You will enjoy the day; we are sure!

Our attention has been called to the wrong dates for the Texas Brew and Tommy Dorsey Band dances at Lodge No. 88 on page 29 of the last issue of Vestnik. We do not have control over the advertisements on pages 29, 30 and 31. ***

Wednesday, November 12, 1980 which ends with the words: "Be it ever so humble, there' s no place like home!''

Almost identical with this expression is another proverb we have heard: "Home is home, be it ever so homely."

Almost everyone has discovered these expressions to be true. No matter what their position in life is people are always ready to admit that to be home is the best experience. Even the prodigal son admitted that it was best to be home with his father and so he returned.

Our soldiers who fought for democracy and freedom throughout the world often mentioned, in their letters. the desire to return home as quickly as possible.

Even the great presidents of our country, despite the fact that they lived in the beautiful White House, often visited their homes where they had lived prior to being elected to their office.

When it comes to fraternal insurance, the SPJST appears to be "our home."

About our organization we can also say: 'There is not a better fraternal life insurance Society for our people generally, than our own SPJST." We can also add: "To be everywhere is fine, but to be in the SPJST means being in one of the best organizations of our people."

The owner and his family are proud of their home because it is theirs. Every member of the SPJST also can be proud, because he well knows that it is his organization, and that he actually is, as it were, a shareholder in it.

In a good home all members of the family live together, helping each other in sadness and in gladness. Doesn't the same thing happen also in our Society?

When death summons a member, the SPJST brings quick aid, in the form of death benefits, to those who survive, and the SPJST also shares in the happiness of its members, too.

At home, the individual always feels free to do and say whatever they want, without any fear, yet, they are not so brave in the home of another person.

The same is true when it comes to fraternal life insurance. If they belong to an organization of another nationality, they do not have the courage to say what they think is best for the well-being of that Society; is that not generally true? *** Enthusiasm is composed of three parts:faith in people, faith in 'your product, and faith in yourself.

If you do not have the faith· that deep down everv man loves someone, loves them enough to take care and pro, ide for them. you will never be able to bring the love out of the depths to the point of realizarion of the responsibility of this

3 love. If you do not have faith in your product there will be nothing to impart to your people but hard, cold, unemotional facts and figures. If you do not have faith in yourself you will find yourself defeated by your own weaknesses, your tensions, your fears and inferiorities.

Membership promotion. Experience has demonstrated, over the years, that: 1) the best salesman for any organization is an active member as opposed to a staff member or paid canvasser, and 2) members calling in pairs far outsell those who make calls alone. A visit by one member could be regarded as an interruption; when two appear. it is a real occasion, and, every visit is a chance to make a friend, someone else to "do things with" for your fraternal benefit and the growth of your organization.

Building and protecting an organization' s reputation is an integral part of modern business management. As a guide to handling this public relations phase of management these guides are worth keeping in mind: 1) Do not consider public relations the job solely of your public relations department; it is everyone's job; 2) Do remember that a good reputation is built upon many small contributions to that image; 3) Do not expect your firm's public image to stand still. It is either moving up or down; 4) Do consider your public relations each time an important decision is made; 5) Do not think that effective public relations result necessarily from projects or stunts; 6) Do bear in mind that what is done is even more important than what is said. The deed is mightier than the word; 7) Do not make the mistake of thinking that relations with the public can be ducked by doing nothing. Doing nothing usually creates a bad impression; 8) Do the right thing for the business and most often it will be the right thing from a good public relations viewpoint; 9) Do not hesitate to step up to bad publicity, unless "bad" means "true."

If such fr, the case, the remedy obviously lies in correcting the cause rather than in endeavoring to obscure it.

EDP COMMITTEE REPORT Upon receiving a mandate from the XXIII SPJST convention, to pursue the automating of our operation here at the home office, the Supreme Lodge designated an Electronic Data Process­ ing Committee. to investigate all available avenues of approach to reach this goal. Due to the fact that many hoursof preliminary study had already been' accomplished by us prior to the. convention, it was decided to continue with the same committee to formulate plans for the actual transition.

4 We are happy to report that our research and developement portion of the project has been completed and approved unanimously by the Supreme Lodge at our October Quarterly meeting.

After "turning every stone" available to us, the final outcome condensed for ease of understanding is as follows: The computer selected will be an IBM System 34, to be installed on location in approximately one (1) year.

The programs and conversion support will be furnished by United Systems Software Inc. of Orlando, Florida. USSI are specialists in Life Insurance Software products and have a number of clients operating from their programs.

The reason for not physically installing our computer for about one (1) year hence is that all the manual data must be coded initially to become operational in an automated environment. This very time-consuming task, we feel will take about one (1) year.

We and the entire staff are aware that this will not be easy, but this project is extremely necessary to put the SPJST in line with current business practices and we stand ready for this challenge.

In conclusion, we want to thank our colleagues in the Supreme Lodge and the general membership for their trust and understanding they have placed in us to undertake such a historical change with this project.

The entire staff at the home office stands ready to accomplish this task with a great deal of enthusiasm. We look forward to updating our procedures and make the SPJST an even more dynamic fraternal benefit society within the State of Texas.

-7A LODGE NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO Dear Members and Friends: San Antonio Lodge No. 133 held its regular meeting at the hall located at 1505 S. Gevers Street. The meeting was opened by President Emil Matula at 2 p.m., and leading the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and also remembering our members in a moment of silence who have passed on.

Secretary Dominic Netek read the minutes of the past meeting. The minutes were accepted after one correction.

It was reported that Sister Dorothy Valka and Brother Frank Valka are both doing fine after some sickness; also Sister Valicek is now at home after being in the hospital. Sister Martha Harbort is making good progress. To all of you dear members: We hope and pray that you get well soon, and we hope to see you all at the meetings again.

President Emil Matula gave a report on the Publication Committee meeting held in Temple, Texas. He reported that the Vestnik will be published by a different publisher and that it will be in a form of a tabloid. Brother Matula also encouraged all members to attend the District VII meeting that will be held at the Sokol Hall in Corpus Christi, Texas.

President Matula then revorted the lodge will serve a turkey dinner at our

next meeting which will be held November 16 at the hall located at 1505 S. Gevers Street. Dinner will be served at 1:00 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. It is requested that all members who are coming to the meeting and who plan to bring guests should bring enough on a covered dish or sweets so that we would not be short of food. All the turkey and other meats plus drinks will be furnished by the lodge. It is also very important that you call the following members as soon as possible to let them know if you are coming to the dinner. Please call Emil Matula: 333-7460 or Marcella Kleprlik, 736-6454. Remember, it is very important that you notify us so that we may know how much meat to prepare.

BRIEF NEWS FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON With sorrow in our hearts we bid farewell to a friend of Lodge No. 88, Mr. James (Jimmie) Hurt, age 79, passed away Thursday, October 30, 1980 in a local hospital. Services were held Saturday, November 1, 1980 in the Chapel of the Garden; interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery with Rev. 0.

Dobey officiating. Survivors are: wife Marie Hurt; step-son and wife, Earl and Rowena Fuchs of Plantersville, Tx.; stepdaughter and husband, Hazel and Earl Martin of Magnolia, Tx.; four step-grandchildren; six step-greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Margie Spates. Mrs. Marie Hurt, with her husband. were devoted supporters of our lodge; on social nights both always occupied the same places; for the past two weeks we missed them very much.

Dear Mrs. Hurt, accept our sincere and heartfelt sympathy in the passing away of your loving husband James (Jimmie) Hurt.

Sister Elsie (Dvorak) Kadera of McKinney, Tx. is in the Dallas hospital for a week and will be confined for some time. For a week now, she is in traction with hopes it will correct and relieve the pain in the hip and spine.

Sister Mary Johnson is doing very well after her surgery, she can walk with a walker and even tried crutches.

The doctor promised to let her go home soon.

Brother Bill Rezek is now at home and taking treatments in the hospital every day. His brother-in-law, Amos Kadlecek is still in the hospital going on three weeks. The doctor promised to let him go home tomorrow.

Brother Albert Bristik is back in the Northwest Nursing Home after spending several weeks in the hospital. To all these ailing members we wish a speedy recovery and also to the ones we do not know about.

Several members had a bad awakening last Friday morning when their businesses were gutted by fire.

They have really been working to clean up the debris. Brother Charley Smith's office, City Judge, Corporation Court office and Brother Lowell Powell's office plus Powell's Printery were completely gutted by fire around 4:30 in the morning. Very sad.

LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN Dear Members: The Elgin Jan Zizka Lodge No. 18 had its ANNUAL CHILI SUPPER last Saturday night and, without any doubt, it was a SUCCESS! Our "Master Chefs" truly came by their name honestly and when you have blisters on your hands from dipping chili; that is a

lot of chili bowls served. It was marvelous to have a full house come out to participate and the Country Store had the largest variety of goodies ever and those yummy cakes encouraged everyone to keep the Cake Walk full.

Dear Editor and Readers: Since the days and time cannot be stopped, there are new ones, pleasant and less pleasant coming. I had some pleasant days when my daughter Lillie Huber from Austin visited me October 23rd to attend the District VII meeting October 26, in the SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Hall. She is a member since 1929, when the Class JT was added to the other classes and were in force. The SPJST Convention was held in 1929 at Temple and I served, at that time, as a convention secretary with Brother Karel Laznovsky from Ennis, Texas.

In 1953 my whole family was transferred from Lodge No. 15, Buckholts to Lodge No. 56; this Lodge No. 56 merged with Lodge No. 79 January 13, 1974.

When we arrived at the hall, the parking lot had only a few autos. We walked in, bought dinner tickets, and took two seats at the table near the kitchen; at the same time, the visitors from other lodges were coming. I had the pleasure to meet our active fraternalist, Brother Dominic Netek from San Antonio who delivered me a friendly message from Brother Jaroslav and Sister Marcella Kleprlik. Brother Bernard M. Gebala, vice president of the Supreme Lodge, also delivered a friendly message from his dear father-in-law, Brother Anton Pokorny of Taylor, Texas. My friendship with the Pokorny family started when they attended the Sokol Slets and also some other celebrations when Buckholts was my former home. There was some more handshaking. Sincere thanks to all for your friendly attention.

Pokorny and his dear wife (their daughter married Brother B.M. Gebala) at the Grand Opening of the new SPJST Lodge No. 187 hall in Round Rock September 16, 1979. The photo of that occasion was made by my son-in-law John Huber of Austin; it was printed in the Vestnik in the past.

The District VII meeting started after lunch, convened by the president of Lodge No. 79 Brother Frank Veselka, who welcomed the assembly; then the meeting was conducted by District VII President Helen Pavelka. All of the District VII officers were present. All reports were made by them and also the minutes of the previous meeting were accepted with applause. The Supreme Lodge was represented by Vice President Brother B.M. Gebala from Temple.

Editor of the Vestnik, Brother Rudy Sefcik mailed a letter to Secretary Betty Jurica, and it was read stating that he cannot come because Sokol in West had an important meeting. He is serving as president of Sokol West. (I also received a letter from him in the same matter.)

In this meeting there was not a program performed by the youth club, instead, if I understand correctly, they were entertained by taking a boat ride.

This meeting was not attended like some meetings held before. There are many reasons for this small attendance.

I wish to name only one; to my opinion it is in the first place, many members do not take any interest to socialize with each other; all they care for, is the life insurance, those days of real fraternalism are almost gone; also in these days, the younger generation is interested in sports more than in home economics.

When all the reports were made, I had a very unpleasant moment that never had happened before in my life. I started bleeding and did not know why?

I began to sweat and grew weak. When my daughter Lillie, noticed what had happened to me, she came to me with several others who were near.

Doctor Bernwanger, my home doctor for the last 25 years, was notified by phone at his home. Most of the weekends he spends his time with his family on their ranch; this time he was at his home. He advised them to take me to the Memorial Medical Center for examination. Daughter Lillie took me home first to get things I may need in the hospital. Son-in-law Roy Peal and Gene Lehnert followed us to my home and from my home only Roy followed us to the hospital. We got there at 5 p.m.

Everything was ready for me. President Lehnert of the local Sokol unit returned

to the hall to assist in preparation for the dance; it started at 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Roy and Lillie filled out the admission papers in the office on the first floor.

While I was resting in Room No. 719-A, I had a Mexican-American patient in my room. Talking about the good rest in the hospitals-there is no such rest, when you are placed in a room for two persons. The first night was passable, but the second day and night were noisy. At 5 a.m., the patient was moved out to another toom. The same day afternoon another person was moved in; he weighed 118 pounds. He has no visitors, only his doctor once-a-day, but he was also moved out to the Intensive Care Unit at midnight. The same day, in the afternoon, my companion was an old and big-statured Negro. Two of his daughters visited him.

My admission cost me $180. This fee must be paid everytime after a 60-day period. When the Medicare Program started, it was only $60 and good for 12 months. My first X-rays were performed Monday morning, October 27th. Tuesday night, October 28th, I ws ordered not to eat or drink from 12:05 a.m. There was a body examination made by my doctor; it was painful. After this there were some more X-rays taken. I was wheeled in a wheelchair from my room at 7 a.m. and wheeled back at 10 a.m.; the breakfast was served at 10:10 a.m. The noon meal was served most of the time after 1 p.m., breakfast:at 8 a.m., and supper around

6 p.m. The meals were satisfactory.

After all of these examinations I was willing to go home but my doctor wanted more time to study my condition and what caused that bleeding. The nurses were friendly to me. I was informed that maybe one of the medicines should be discontinued and replaced with a new one. It also may have been caused by some rough meals.

There was no real answer. After the first two bleedings in the hall, there was none since then.

Friday morning at 10 a.m., I was back at my kind home. Daughters Lillie and Ann brought me home at that time. I also had my broken leg X-rayed; it is OK but the pain will stay with me as long as I live.

SLAVONIC MUTUAL FIRE INSURANCE ASSOCIATION CHAPTER 9 FORT WORTH, TEXAS Dear Members: Most of you, who were at the last meeting, know that the meeting which has been regularly held on the third Sunday in October was changed to the third Sunday in November. There are so many activities scheduled in October such as the State Fair among others, it was decided more members might be able to attend this meeting which will be held November 16, at 2 p.m. It will be held at the National hall, 3316 Roberts-Cut Off Road.

There will be election of officers and committees at this time as well as other business that has been transacted since the last meeting.

MAT AND MARY KALINA HONORED ON 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

FEATURES CMAJDALKAS CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Lad C. Cmajdalka of Fayetteville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, October 26, 1980, at the St. John Recreation Hall, with a reception starting at 10:30 a.m. Most of the guests first attended Holy Mass at 9:30 a.m. at which time the honored couple exchanged vows again and were blessed by the Rev. Ben Mazurkiewicz who also delivered a short, appropriate address.

The honoree was attired in a gold-striped beige dress. Her corsage was a yellow orchid enhanced with a gold ribbon and leaves. Mr. Cmajdalka wore a white carnation with a gold ribbon and leaves. Four members of the original wedding party were present: Arnold Cmajdalka, Mrs. Annie Scagno and Mr. and Mrs. Theo Polasek.

All the guests were registered by Mrs. Patsy Hoffman and Mrs. Susan Tolson, granddaughters of the couple. About 250 persons were in attendance, some from as far away as El Paso.

Refreshments of kolache, cake and coffee were served when the couple and guests arrived at the hall. A barbecued chicken meal was served at noon.

Various floral arrangements decorated the tables and hall.

The wedding cake was a three-tiered Italian Cream Cake beautifully decorated and topped with a Christogram. The cake was flanked by gold tapers and was served by Joyce Paulk, Sharon Wick, Kate Wick and Margaret Krenek.

Mrs. Clarence Krenek registered the gifts and was assisted by Mrs. Robert J. Kovar, Mrs. Henry Wick, Robert J. Kovar and John P. Donlin.

Lad C. Cmajdalka and Annie P. Cmajdalka were united in marriage October 21, 1930, by the Rev. Joseph Klobouk in St. John Catholic Church in Fayetteville. The reception was held at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Louis Polasek.

They have three daughters. Mrs. Robert J. (Annette) Kovar, Mrs. Henry (Charlene) Wick and Mrs. Clarence (Lillian) Krenek and two sons, Lad E. and Alois F. Cmajdalka; also eighteen grandchildren, four of whom are married, and three great-grandchildren.

The couple has spent their entire married life in Fayetteville. all at the same address. Mr. Cmajdalka retired 11

Mat and Mary Kalina were honored on their 50th Wedding Anniversary October 18 with a concelebrated Mass of Thanksgiving offered by Rev. Francis Kalina of Fredericksburg assisted by Rev. Benedict Zientak and Rev. Arnold Boeding in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena.

Mary Kubenka and Mat Kalina were married October 15, 1930 in St. Mary's Church in Praha, Texas.

Their seven children and their spouses, Stanley and Alice Gleich of Rowen, Sidney and Betty Kalina of Elm Mott, Harry and Betsy Kalina of Arlington, Marcel and Annie Lois Kalina of Eola, Victor and Germaine Hoelscher of Olfen, Bennie and Clara Kalina of Miles, Leroy and Valeria Hoelscher of St. Lawrence hosted the reception and supper which followed in the SPJST Lodge Hall. Mrs. and Mrs. Kalina have 31 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Friends and relatives of the couple attended the affair.

GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kalina of the Kovar community near Smithville were honored on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary Sunday, October 12, 1980, with a dinner at the Kovar SPJST Hall, The event was hosted by their daughter, Dorothy; son-in-law, Wilbert and grandchildren, Allen and Stacy Milberger of Sealy.

The Rev, Dan Marek of the Taylor Brethren Church read appropriate scripture passages and led the couple in reaffirming their wedding vows before the noon meal of turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings was served.

The anniversary cake was a three-tiered white cake topped with Gold "50" numerals and decorated with roses and daisies. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kalina cut by Mrs. Herbert Frank of Sealy and Mrs. Juanita Kurtz of Smithville.

Kathryn Kurtz, Julie Parker and Stacy Miliberger served the cakes and kolache after lunch.

The hall was decorated with gold and white streamers, gold bells and gold and white daisies. The registration table was covered with an embroidered table cloth made by the late Mrs. Bertha Malina, sister of Mr. Kalina. The table also held the wedding picture of 50 years ago and a miniature couple from Czechoslovakia in the traditional Czech wedding attire. The guests were registered by their granddaughter, Stacy.

The Milbergers were assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Billy Parker, Mr. and Mrs. Johnie Kalina of Smithville, and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Frank, Mr. and Mrs. Frankie Sodolak, and Mr. and Mrs.

Aaron Swearingen of Sealy. Allen Milberger, their grandson, along with J.D. and Darryl Kalina and John Lastovica also assisted with duties in the kitchen.

Louis Kalina and Annie Lastovica were married Sunday, October 12, 1930 by the late Rev. F.J. Kostohryz at the Seaton Brethren Church. Rev. Kostohryz also performed the wedding ceremony for their daughter and son-in-law and their son-in-law's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Milberger of Caldwell. The Kalinas have lived in the Smithville area all their married life and have been engaged in farming.

They are members of the Kovar SPJST Lodge No. 38 since 1950.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF MARRIAGE We are very happy to announce that Birdie (Knippel) Hilsher and John J. Pech were united last week in the state of matrimony.

Both are members of the SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston. Sister Birdie became a member in 1936 and many, many members of the SPJST fatnilyh all over the state know her well and perhaps worked with her in the almost endless fraternal activities, all dedicated to the SPJST Scoiety that she loves.

The following is a partial list of her fraternal work, not exactly in a chronological order.

1) Served for two years as the president of the Texas Fraternal Congress representing the SPJST Society.

2) Was a member and committeeman of the National Fraternal Congress, Youth Section.

3) Served as president of the Youth Section of the Texas Fraternal Congress.

4) Was the youth director of Lodge No. 88 and District V. 5) Was the first SPJST Youth Counselor in 1949 with duties to and during her term to activate and develop the youth movement in our lodges. She created and initiated the dancing and singing classes into the SPJST Youth Movement. In Lodge No. 88 alone, there were 127 students active in this project.

6) Choreographed and directed the lodge No. 88 Ladies in the "Star Waltz Drill," sponsored by the Supreme Lodge at the Texas Fraternal Congress.

7) For the new Lodge No. 88 building at 15th and Beall Streets and she did the interior decorating of the hall and the other rooms and founded the beautiful chandelier for the festive occasion of the opening she prepared the large Program Book which included a well-written completely researched history of Lodge No. 88 illustrated with many and many pictures she assembled in much time-consuming search.

8) As an accomplished singer she sang in various operettas and performed for many lodge, district and convention activities.

9) She served for four terms as president of Lodge No. 88 Birthday Club Sisters and, in her tenure, she was the chairman of the now so well-known Bicentennial Cookbook, the Unique Antique Quilt Show, the Arts and Crafts Show, the Style Show and many other club activities.

10) Perhaps the one memorable achievement that was very close to her heart was the outstanding presentation

14 as a director of the so well-remembered great operetta "Muziky, Muziky" performed in Lodge No. 88 raising funds for the forthcoming Houston SPJST Convention. The beautiful and, to many, unforgetable productions with original new music and arrangements b ased on the lilting themes of the songs of Fr. Kmoch was performed nine times throughout Texas to over-flowing enthusiastic audiences. Many remember the special concert organ music of this operetta.

11) She had the official SPJST Fraternal Song written at the request of the Supreme Lodge.

12) Served for two years as District V secretary.

13) Presented, in 1954 as the program chairman of the Texas Fraternal Congress, a musical production by Lodge No. 88 adults youth members "Alegorical Scene of the SPJST Fraternal Credo," based on, the themes of the SPJST Fraternal Song representing SPJST. 14) She is a sales representative in her fourth year and is the first to write over one million of insurance for two consecutive years in Lodge No. 88, District V and statewide.

15) Served as co-chairman for the 1952 Convention Committee in Houston.

16) Co-chairman of the 50th Lodge No. 88's Anniversary programming.

17) Served as president of Hlahol Dramatic Club for one year and also served one year as director.

18) Because her many contacts with the University of Houston officials and among the many civic organizations of Houston, she was able to contribute the finalizing influence in the establishment of accredited Czech Language Classes at the University of Houston.

19) Helped to establish the Czech Classes at Lodge No. 88 which had 76 students.

For: John J. Pech, the list is not nearly as long but nevertheless, just as prominently outstanding.

1) Brother Pech wrote all musical material in Sister Birdie's annual programs for the SPJST Youth Movement, the Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter issues written during her tenure as the first State SPJST Youth Counselor.

2) He composed the SPJST Fraternal Song and arranged it not only for the membership singing and as a beautiful choral setting but also as a production of the "SPJST Fraternal Credo."

3) Brother Pech is a well-known concert organist and many of our memb ers heard him as the musical director of

Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Sadler the operetta, "Music, Music" for which he composed and arranged the musical score.

4) John J. Pech was the conductor of the 140-voice Concert Choral Society of Houston for which he arranged and wrote many scores from the world famous works of the treasury of the Czech-Moravian Musical Culture, a program too large to list here, but including the first Czech performance of the selections from the great Bedrich Smetana's "Bartered Bride" performed in Houston's Music Hall and the Jones Hall and other halls as well.

5) Brother Pech received for his contributions to music a most cherished gold medal from Pope John, presented to him by Bishop John Morkovsky.

6) He is also the recipient of the coveted Bedrich Smetana Medal presented to him in Washington by

then Ambassador Susan Spacil for Brother Pech's arrangements and presentations from the glorious treasury of the Czech-Moravian-Slovakian Musical Culture as part of our great American Culture.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Schuetz of West and the groom is the son of Mrs. Norma Sadler of Waco.

Wednesday, November 12, 1980 Mrs. Richard Hykel, the bride's sister of Temple, was honor attendant.

Best man was John Schiller of Fort Worth.

Jeffery Hykel was the candlelighter and also served as ringbearer.

Mrs Don Gibbard rendered music on the piano.

Mrs. Sadler was employed as a secretary for Texas Farm Bureau. The groom is with the GMC Insurance Company in Fort Worth.

The newly-wed couple is residing at their home in Fort Worth.

15 LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was held Sunday, November 2nd, at 4 p.m. It was called to order by President Ginger Wuensche.

We had one visitor, Mark Wahlburg.

We had no old business so we went on to new business. New business was about having an early Thanksgiving party. It will be held Monday, November 17, from 6: 430 to 8:30 p.m. I will be contacting people on what to bring. We will have a surprise for all.

We will also be getting our part for the Christmas program.

At our next meeting everyone is to bring an appropriate gift (girls bring a girl's gift; and boys bring a boy's gift); also, if you bring a friend be sure and bring a gift for him/her.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, December 7, at 3:30 p.m. I hope to see you there.

A lifelong resident of Victoria, born 23 February 1953, Brother Bialek formerly was a private building contractor and more recently was employed in route sales by the local Coors beer distributorship. He lived at 813 Crestview.

Prominent in sports, he was Class C singles champion in the 1979 city bowling tournament and played varsity baseball at Stroman High School, where he graduated in 1971. He was an active member of Victoria Corvette Club, Karate Club of Victoria, the National Racket Ball Association and the American Bowlers Congress. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph E. Bialek of Victoria; two brothers, Adolph E. Bialek Jr. and Harold E. Boerm, both of Victoria; and his grandmother, Mrs. Cora Lewis of Morales, Texas.

Pallbearers were George Bogakos, Dan Duty, Robert Farek, Richard Wofford, Mike Novak and Bobby McCracken.

Honorary pallbearers included Dennis Groll, Bob Schoenfeld, Ron Shifflett, Louis Besancon and Calvin Mikeska.

January 6, 1916 he was married to Miss Albina Strouhal in Sugarland; she preceded him in death April 1, 1970. He was employed as a sugar dryer for Imperial Sugar Company in Sugarland, retiring in 1958.

Brother Vavrecka was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Frydek and the SPJST Lodge No. 31.

Funeral services were held from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Frydek at 11 a.m. Friday, October 10, with interment in the Frydek Catholic Cemetery and with Rev. Bernard Snock officiating.

Parish rosary was recited at the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m.

Pallbearers were grandsons: Edward Mateja, August Kmiec, Mark Kmiec, Chris Mateja, Jimmie Strouhal and Ben Vavrecka, Jr. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Martha Mateja of Sealy; one son; Benedict R. ITEMS OF INTEREST SHOT PLACEMENT KEY TO SUCCESSFUL DEER HUNT

Sunup is rapidly approaching on a cool, crisp autumn morning as the hunter waits patiently, perched atop a deer stand somewhere in the Lone Star State. As the sun's rays begin to flicker across the eastern horizon on this somber Saturday morning, 1980 deer season has officially begun.

Somewhere directly ahead, the hunter hears brush crackly and a twig snap. Out of a mesquite thicket less than 100 yards away, a magnificent 12-point buck emerges into the open field.

Beads of sweat begin to pop out across the hunter's forehead as a chill crawls quickly up his spinal column at the sight before him. He draws a deadly aim and fires, watching in tense exhilaration as the tremendous beast falls in its tracks.

True, this situation may seem more like one out of "Fantasy Island," but segments will be reinacted in varying degrees thousands of times this fall.

Some hunts will end successfully; others will result in sheer frustration and disappointment.

Knowing a deer's skeletal structure and location of vital organs and arteries helps determine shot placement.

Regardless of the situation, accurage shot placement is mandatory for a quick, humane kill, says Dr. Dwight Guynn, a wildlife specialist based in Uvalde with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

According to Guynn, hunting accuracy begins with proper preparation and care of the rifle. Before loading he urges hunters to make sure the barrel is clear of obstructions. Check rifle action for tightness, smooth operation and rust or dust. Magazines should feed and eject shells properly.

Also, tighten scopes if loose.

Sighting in the rifle before hunting can be a critical factor, says Guynn.

This can be done by firing at ranges of 50,100, and 200 yards, distances at which most deer will be shot. It's also important to sight-in with exactly the same grain bullet you plan to hunt with.

Then it takes dedicated repetitious practice in all hunting positions, learning limitations while improving accuracy.

Now, assuming the hunter has sufficiently sharpened his accuracy, where should the shot be placed for the most effictive kill? Knowing a deer's skeletal structure and exact location of vital organs and arteries can be helpful.

Guynn prefers a shot to the lungs when possible. He says the lungs form the biggest vital area, allowing for a shot to be somewhat off-target and still be effective. A shot missing the lungs a

little high may sever the spine, one a little low may hit the heart, a little farther back may strike the liver, and one too far forward could break the shoulder. Any of these hits can result in a quick kill.

A shot into the brain or one severing the spine both achieve quick, definite results but must be accurately placed because of the small targets. If a trophy mount is desired, shots into the head or neck may do serious and even irreparable damage to those portions needed for mounting.

Quick kills can also be achieved with a shot into the heart. But like those to the brain and spine, heart shots are difficult to place and can miss or result in a broken let.

Guynn says shoulder shots are effective and provide a large target area. The one big disadvantage to this shot placement is more meat destruction and less venison for the table.

Shots that sever a major artery such as the femoral artery, aortic artery or jugular vein are quickly fatal, but these are extremely difficult targets. Hence, Guynn discourages this type shot placement.

The wildlife specialist says a slightly angling-away shot is ideal for the hunter because it presents a good shot at vital organs with only light ribs to shoot through. He advises hunters to line up on the far shoulder for correct shot placement.

Wednesday, November 12, 1980 When deer are quartering away, a shot placed just in front on the hind quarter will pass forward, enter the rib cage from behind and angle toward the opposite shoulder. Guynn says this type shot will normally hit the liver, lungs and possibly the heart. However, the target area is much narrower than the classic broadside shot. Hunters unsure of their accuracy are advised to pass this one up in lieu of a better angle.

Straight-away shots, at their best, are also questionable and not recommended. Here, two slim chances exist.

From a powerful rifle, a shot just under the tail through the paunch into the chest area or one through the center of the neck into the spine is about all a hunter can hope for. Both possibilities present a small and difficult target.

Guynn says a shot under the tail must pass between the hib bones through a softball-sized opening in the pelvic girdle with enough force to travel almost the entire body length into the chest area. In addition, this type shot leaves little blood trail, making tracking difficult.

Guynn strongly believes that patience is a hunter's best ally. "When the opportunity for a shot arrives, don't rush it," he stresses. "Choose your shot carefully and wait for the angle that results in a good, clean kill."

Once the quarry has been slain, a final chapter in this exciting saga of man versus nature remains to unfoLd.

COLD TOMATOES DON'T RIPEN

Since tomatoes aren't always fully ripe when they reach the grocery shelves, especially in fall and winter, they need a little special attention at home.

When tomatoes are light pink and still firm, they are not in the best condition for optimum flavor. However, they will turn red if placed in a bowl and set at room temperature for about 24 hours, says Tom Longbrake, horticulturist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

Tomatoes will turn bright red and juicy if given the opportunity, but most people eliminate that possibility by promptly placing the unripe fruit in the refrigerator, says Longbrake.

Best ripening conditions for tomatoes is a temperature of 65 to 75 degrees F. Do not place tomatoes on the stove, in a microwave oven or in direct sunlight as overheating will soften them too much.

The best humidity is 95 percent. Higher humidity stimulates micro-organism

SGA Junior Girls growth while lower humidity can cause dehydration and shriveling. Use a ripening bowl or a plastic bag with air vents cut into the side to control humidity.

Only after ripening should tomatoes be refrigerated, points out the horticulturist.

Research has shown that tomatoes arrive to the consumer in better condition if harvested and marketed before becoming fully ripe.

During fall and winter, tomatoes are grown in the South where it's warm--Texas, Florida and California.

Most fruit are picked in the immature green or pink stage. After picking, tomatoes are boxed, hauled to packing sheds, graded, packed into cartons,

loaded onto trucks and hauled to warehouses. Then, says Longbrake, they are distributed to local grocery stores where consumers may purchase one of the main ingredients for the popular tossed salad.

CRACKED EGG REMEDIES Perfectly whole and unbroken eggs are an unrelenting demand of every consumer, yet delivering such a product is a difficult task for the grocer and all those before him.

Dr. Dave Mellor, poultry marketing specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System, says egg breakage is

Eggs can be protected from breakage in two ways, Mellor says. The first is by development of a stronger shelled egg and the second is through careful handling of eggs.

"The less handling, the better," contends Mellor. "If you do all the handling in one place at one time, it is much better than shipping the eggs to different places for each process."

The specialist encourages egg producers to do all the washing, sorting

and packing right on the farm--if possible.

According to Mellor, egg handling methods vary widely throughout the world. In Pakistan and Bolivia eggs have been collected and shipped by donkey. Some Brazilian egg merchants wrap a dozen eggs in newspaper for the housewife. These methods don't prevent much egg damage. Brazilian egg producers have used wooden trays with individual wire egg holders for shipment--a good by costly method.

Wooden skids containing the equivalent of 24 cases of eggs (120 dozen) are being used as an economical way to transport eggs on the West Coast. When plywood sheets, with vertical supports, separate case-high layers, these skids of eggs are being used for 1,000-mile shipments.

Mellor is stilt looking for the "best" way to handle eggs.

Wednesday, November 12, 1980 `MIX 'N MATCH' YOUR PROTEIN FOODS "Mix 'n match" your protein foods--so you'll be sure to get high quality protein, a foods and nutrition specialist says.

Proteins are among the most important parts of our diets, so it's urgent that we get high-quality protein.

To do this, "mix 'n match" your protein foods, since all protein foods do not have high-quality protein, Rose Tindall Postel explains.

Dr. Postel is on the home economics staff of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

HIGH-QUALITY PROTEIN Foods that DO have high-quality protein are meats, fish, poultry, eggs, and cheese.

Of course, other foods have protein--but it isn't such high-quality.

Foods with lower-quality protein are cereal, other grain products, beans and peas.

'MIX 'N MATCH' Many consumers try to include cereals, beans and peas in their diets to save money.

That's a smart thing to do, but be sure to also include SOME high-quality protein foods with the lower-quality protein foods--so you'll get the right kind of protein.

Here are some ideas for doing this: be sure to have milk with your cereal, especially, for example, in cooked cereal when you're tempted to cook with water instead. Also, when you serve macaroni, be sure to add cheese. And when you serve beans, add some meat to them--as in chili, for example.

'AMINO ACIDS' KEY TO PROTEIN There's a reason for all this: animal proteins, such as those in meat, poultry, fish and dairy products, have a better proportion of the essential amino acids that actually "make up' protein.

Because the necessary amino acids that form high-quality protein are in meats and dairy products, those foods are rated the highest in protein value.

'SUPER-ECONOMY PROTEIN' PLAN What can you do if you can't always afford a meat or dairy product for meals?

Try the "super-economy protein" plan: combing TWO lower-qualityprotein foods for those meals.

Remember, you do get SOME protein in those lower-quality protein foods.

For example, chick peas are excellent sources of protein--BUT they are still LOW in one or more essential amino acids. That's why it's best to combine them with a meat product.

However, for the times when you can't include a meat or dairy product, combine TWO vegetable proteins in one meal. That way, at least, you'll have a little better protein quality than if you just served one single lower-qualityprotein food for a meal.

Here are some ideas for combining two vegetable protein foods: -Comb& peanut protein with wheat protein by serving peanut butter sandwiches.

-Or combine another vegetable protein with beans--such as rice OR tortillas.

-Another idea would be combining sesame seeds with something made of soybeans.

Finally, remember the very best combination of protein foods is a combination that uses meat, fish, poultry or dairy products. That combination helps you "mix 'n match" your proteins for the highest quality you can get.

MECHANICAL METHODS FOR FALL, WINTER BRUSH CONTROL Chaining, root plowing and grubbing are all effective mechanical methods for controlling brush during fall and winter months, says a range brush and weed control specialist.

Chaining involves using a heavy anchor chain (weighing 40 to 90 pounds per foot) 150 to 300 feet long and drawn between two crawler type tractors, points out Dr. Tommy Welch with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

Chaining uproots or breaks off brush.

Chaining of live brush species that have the capability of sprouting from a bud zone beneath the soil will provide only temporary control. However, chaining following a herbicide treatment provides effective and economical brush control, particularly of mesquite.

Chaining of mesquite is most effective about three years after a herbicide has been used, says Welch.

Chaining during late fall and winter is best because the dormant and brittle mesquite plants break up easily, inflicting maximum damage. Soil moisture should be high so that the mesquite will be uprooted, thus removing the bud zone from the soil so that the tree cannot resprout.

Chaining is effective on areas supporting mesquite trees 4 to 5 inches of more in diameter. Chaining of sprayed areas uproots most large trees, increasing the duration of control over that obtained from herbicide control alone. Dead or partially dead mesquite trees are easier to uproot than unsprayed, live plants.

Root plowing is also effective in controlling brush but it's expensive.

Therefore, it's best suited for sites with high production potential, points out Welch.

Root plows with fins usually provide best control, but they also destroy existing turf. If existing turf is to be saved, a thin-bladed root plow without fins will minimize turf damage. Also, root plowing during the winter months causes less damage to existing forage plants. Seeding the root-plowed area with desirable forage species is often a wise step, suggests the specialist.

Grubbing works well on thin stands of brush and is also useful as a maintenance control measure. Use of a small crawler tractor to grub thin stands of small brush species is a good practice, believes Welch. Plans are available from the Extension Service for a grubber developed by the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station for use on small crawler tractors.

A grubbing unit may be placed on rubber-tired farm tractors and may be rear-mounted or attached to a front-end bucket loader. The tractor should be equipped with puncture resistant tires such as steel-belted logging tires, recapped aircraft tires, or foam-filled tires.

Rubber-tired wheel loaders may also be equipped with a grubbing unit, says Welch. Rubber-tired vehicles are useful for maintenance control of small brush plants. More small brush plants may be missed when grubbing during the winter because of difficulty in seeing the leafless plants.

Welch advised ranchers to select the brush control method that best fits their operations and needs.

Also, don't forget to reduce the liquid used in the recipe by one-fourth cup, she adds.

Foods such as eggs, mayonnaise and seafood contain sulfide which may cause silver and silverplate to tarnish with prolonged contact, she says.

When selecting fresh pork, look for lean that's firm and fine in texture and a bright greyish-pink color, advises the National Live Stock and Meat Board. There should be a small amount of firm, white fat. When selecting cured pork, look for a large percentage of fine textured lean that's rosypink in color. The fat should be firm and white.

Narodni vYbor hlavniho mesta Prahy vg ak usiluje o roz gifeni spoluprace a yzajemneho poznani i s hlavnimi mesty kapitalistickYch a rozvojovYch zemi. V roce 1979 jsme v Praze pfivitali oficialni navgtevy z Aten, Dilli, Vidne, Damagku a Kabulu, vedette nejvyggim pfedstavitelem spravy mesta. Rozhovory pii techto navgtevach se neomezovaly pouze na informace o fispe gich a problemech, ktere stoji pied pfedstaviteli hlavnich mest, ale temef ye vgech pfipadech bylo dosaieno alespori ramcovYch dohod o dalgich obiastech spoluprace a vimeny zkugenosti. Konkretnim vYrazem takove spoluprace byla pomoc Prahy pfi vYstavbe kulturniho zafizeni v Honoji, ktere bylo otevfeno ye vYroeni den osvobozeni hlavniho mesta Vietnamske socialisticke republiky od francouzske nadvlady. Ceskoslovensko v benatkitch Na bienale vytvarneho umeni, ktere se kona v Benatkach a bude otevfeno do 28. zail 1980, se te gi velke pozornosti vYstava "Ceskoslovenske moderni umeni v praiskYch muzeich". Poeinaje letognim rokem se vedeni bienale rozhodlo zvat k mezinarodnim pfehlidkam vidy nektere z evropskYch muzei a jako prvni pozvalo praiskou Narodni galerii.

V jedne Casti Ceskoslovenske expozice jsou instalovany obrazy a kresby Franti gka Kupky od jeho umeleckych poeatkil po nejzralejgi dila.
