We remind all of our members and readers that Sunday, November 9 is the date of the presentation of a Czech stage production which will be of much entertainment to those who attend the presentation. Rest assured that, in times like these, a few hours of enjoyment and laughter among fraternal friends will be rewarding and you will be able to forget, for a little while, the worries of everyday life. If fate, health and all of our expectations permit, we plan to be present at this very-seldom offered opportunity. The Sokol Gymnastic Association will be celebrating their first anniversary at SPJST Lodge Jaromir No. 54, West with a nice program planned for all of those attending. We will publish the program of the day in coming issues of our Vestnik. The officers and members and, especially, our gymnasts are proud of their unit and look forward to this day; please be present to help celebrate the occasion with them. ** We have just received a nice brochure from the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation in Austin. It is very interesting and shows all about the 2 billion-year-old rocks and fossils which abound in our State of Texas; we reprint the following release because it is educational, informative and interesting. Wednesday, November 5, 1980 Rock collectors in Texas will be inspired to add to their collections after seeing a new publication prepared by the Travel and Information Division of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation.

Entitled "Texas Rocks and Fossils," the folder pictures nearly 100 specimens in vivid color. Each is identified by its county or region of origin.

Similar in style and format to the popular "Flowers of Texas" folder, the new publication is designed for the layman rather than the professional collector. It relates helpful suggestions for the amateur rockhound, along with admonitions about unauthorized collecting.

The folder also includes a small map that divides Texas into seven general areas based on the relative age of the surface geology of each region.

"Texas Rocks and Fossils" is available free at any Texas Tourist Bureau or by mail from TEXAS, Dept. DHT, P.O. Box 5064, Austin, Texas 78763.

Pierce, 512-475-5954. *** Any business which has as its primary impulse the preservation of the home, the education of children and the care of the aged, must have the admiration of us all. When we consider that the same funds which provide for the helpless are also mighty factors in the building and expansion of business and public utility enterprises, we gain some conception of the place of life insurance in our national life.

Life insurance is a form of investment which should commend itself to every man of common sense and business judgement. It is equally serviceable as an incentive to the saving habit and as a protection against unforeseen and unforeseeable circumstances. *** What is a teacher? A teacher is knowledge with a smile on her face, democracy with a book in her hand, wisdom with a flick of white chalkdust on her eyelid.

In so many cases a teacher is expected to be a diplomat, pediatrician, sometimes a policeman, practical nurse plus a quiz program coordinator. She is also expected to be a psychiatrist without a couch, politician without a promise, a babysitter without the right to raid the refrigerator.

A teacher is a person who is equally adepted at teaching fractions, putting on galoshes, finding lost gloves in the dark

cloakrooms and also making parents feel good at parent-teacher meetings.

Teachers spend four years in college, studying hard, in order to learn decorative things for a classroom, participate and/or lead in school activities during recess time and learn to approach a youngster because a student had its way too much at home.

If you have an understanding for a teacher, you will sometimes find a teacher after school taking aspirins, picking uj spitballs, washing blackboards, rehearsing plays, and sitting at a desk waiting for strength to get home.

Teachers are also expected to keep out of debt, have creative minds (but not disagree with the Board of Education), stay away from unnecessary habits, plus give willingly to the United Fund.

In my opinion a teacher is underpaid, unappreciated (at times), also sometimes harried and overworked as they gain their pay in satisfaction; yet secretly, a teacher will admit that they have the greatest jobs of all; and, of course, they do this because they hold the history of the world in the palm of their hand. *** When speaking of a leader, a leader is a person who is going somewhere, but not going alone. They take others with them.

Their ability in setting up situations in which others are willing to follow them and happy to work with them is a precious skill called leadership. It's a skill of nature composed of many qualities: thoughtfulness and consideration for others, enthusiasm, the ability to share responsibility with others and a multitude of other traits, but, fundamentally a leader is one who leads, one who has a plan, one who keeps headed toward a goal, and a purpose.

They have the enthusiasm to keep moving forward in such a way that others gladly go with them.

Make your plans to come out to our Stardust Ballroom and hear the Vrazels.

Maybe by next year, we'll have our stage remodeled; our Board is making ways of building a ramp to help the bands get their instruments on stage.

Dear Members and Friends: Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, October 12, 1980 at our SPJST Hillje Hall with Vice President James Bacak presiding over the meeting. The monthly meeting was a very short one. President Jerry Polasek wasn't able to attend the meeting due to illness. We hope you are feeling better, Mr. Polasek. Get-well wishes from all of us.

We remainded standing for a moment of silence in memory of Brother Louis Blinka who died August 4,- 1980.

Brother Blinka lived in the Hillje area and was a retired farmer.

Dear Members and Friends: Our October 8 meeting was called to order at 8 p.m. by President Ann Balusek.

The Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag was recited by the members present.

We had one visitor, Brother Dan Balusek of Lodge No. 47. Visitors are always welcome.

Minutes of the September meeting were read by Secretary Charlsie Svetlik.

There being no corrections or additions, the minutes were accepted as read and then signed.

Treasurer's report was given by Sister Patricia Hillman. Committee reports were also given from the bar, kitchen and entertainment.

On the sick list we had Sister Nora Matcek, Brothers Ben Vybiral, Louis Svetlik, Joe Zajicek and wife Lillie who is always willing to help our membership. We wish each of you a speedy recovery.

A warm welcome is extended to our new member, Brother Robert Euan.

Thank you for joining our lodge.

Our next meeting will be held Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m. The officers and committees will be elected in this meeting for 1981. All the members are urged to come and participate in this election.

Our lodge held its monthly meeting last Monday with Lodge President Brother R.L. Sadecky presiding.

Secretary Evelyn Salac read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved as read.

Second Vice President Paul Pokladnik read the entertainment report. Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported two circles of Beseda Dancers at the State Fair represented Lodge No. 84 and also invited all the youths and adults to dress up as goblins to be judged at the Halloween party held October 26th.

Brother Adolph Salac, for the House Committee, thanked Brothers J. Rejcek, Ben Jarma, Randolph Scott, Emil Petr and R.L. Sadecky for help received in getting the lots cleaned and asked fo jâ–şelp again for Wednesday, October 22, after 5 p.m. and November 5, the dance floor will need to be cleaned and waxed and workers are needed. Will you help any time after 7 p.m.?

Special Committee was reported on

by Sister Linda Coker asking for pastry to be sold (tentatively) November 15th.

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council was scheduled to meet October 23rd as reported in the correspondence read by Secretary Salac. Sister Bessie Petr reported the Czech Culture Society was scheduled to meet October 27th.

Brother Ben Jarma, in behalf of the softball team, presented the lodge with the trophy they won for tying second place in the City League. Our lodge photographer, Brother Randolph Scott, promises a picture of the presentation.

The trophy is beautiful!

New members or members securing additional insurance for the month are: Mary Sykora, Faye Sykora, Lawrence Paroski and Virginia Gibboney.

The Nominating Committee consists of Sisters Lillie Jarma, Bessie Petr and Dorothy Prasifka. Brother Emil Petr, who is our hall rental chairman, gave a good report on dates reserved for

various activities for the coming months in 1980. Second Vice President Paul Pokladnik asked all Entertainment Committee members to attend the October 29th meeting; he also reminded all of us present that the November 1st dance with music by the Country Boys was a barn dance. It is wished that many of you polish those boots, wash those blue jeans and buy a big hat and dance to the many western songs that Brother Raymond Dlabaj and his group practice. Brother Sadecky invited all interested singers to attend the social of November 2nd.

The lodge extends sincere sympathy to the family of Sister Agnes Chmelar, wife of Brother Eddie Chmelar and mother of Brother Emil Chmelar. May she have eternal rest.

Sunshine lady Sister Prasifka sent congratulation cards to Brother and Sister Randy Olson (parents) and Sister Betty Olson and her husband (grandparents); a baby boy arrived at their home last week. Get-well cards were sent to Sister Misty Rotrammel, Brother Toby Tyrell and Brother John Rejcek of Abbott.

Lodge No. 84 congratulations our member, Brother Sid Pokladnik this year at the Texas State Fair on Czech Day for the music he and his Dallas Czech Concert provided for this day and for his many, many hours of work he devoted to this day. We are so proud.

LODGE NO. 80, HOLLAND

Dear Members: Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, October 12th. The meeting was called to order by President D.I. Bohac.

All the officers were present except Treasurer Brother Latham.

Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all the members present.

Brother Alvin Martinets, our secretary, read the minutes of the September meeting with no additions or corrections. They were approved as read.

The audit of the Auditing Committee was accepted as reported. All the chairmen of the various departments also gave their reports. The taxes on our hall property was discussed. Most of the members came to the conclusion that our property was assessed too high.

This matter is to be taken up with the Bell County Tax Collector, Mr. Moore.

8 It was voted that the Property Committee hire Raymond Schneider to bulldoze the trees on the acreage that was recently purchased.

All the members who went to the Czech Day on the chartered bus to Dallas, reported thay had a nice time.

I am sorry to report that we lost one of our lodge members, Brother Walter (Hicks) Gommert, age 69, who passed away at his home in Holland, Sunday, October 19, after a lingering illness.

We, the members of our lodge, express our sincere sympathy to his wife and family.

Door prizes at the October meeting were won by Beulah Barabas, Ligie Ivicic and Bessie BieIs. The meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m. to meet again the first Sunday, November 2nd. A happy hour followed.

NEWS FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON

I am back from that Las Vegas fabulous city of night life which was rough on my sleep. The group of seven of us were: Tim and Rosalee Kostom, Steve and Estelle Kelly, Pearl Hanka, Naomi Spencer and I. We had a wonderful time from Friday to Monday morning when we had to leave early in the morning to get to the airport on time. A limousine picked us up at the airport and also took us back Monday.

The three days were filled with excitement to the brim; not a moment wasted. Lucky? oh yes! One or two came out on top and the rest trailed behind, but not bad. The fun we had was worth it. All seven of us are ready to go again whenever we can. One thing about the airline, the food they served while flying was the best we ever had; we flew with the Braniff Airlines.

Besides the levers on the one-armed bandits, we took in two dinner shows and we had lodging at the California Hotel, one block off Main Street and our rooms were all in a row on one floor, that was real nice.

VESTNiK The annual affair of our Czech Day was a huge success. The attendance was satisfying and many came dressed in costumes which added to the festivities of the day. The turkey dinner was the first one served this year and it was very delicious with dressing, beans. corn and salad. The serving line moved very fast, thanks to the arrangement.

The pastry table was loaded with donated home-baked pastries: cakes, pies and kolache. The afternoon program in the Chandelier Ballroom opened with the National Anthems, "Starr Spangled Banner" and "Kde domov milj" by our one and only Helen Hegwood. The Proclamation of Czech Day was delivered by Councilman Dale Gorcznski of District II in Houston, Texas. The Lodge No. 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, directed by Rudy Dybala with the Choral Singers under the direction of Tim Kostom, entertained the guests for an hour. At 2 p.m. the colors were posted by John Fugate and Lynn Pflughaupt and the Pledge of Allegiance by Lynn Pflughaupt, flag bearer of Lodge No. 88. The Sokol Gymnastic Team presented by President Emil Kuropata performed for the pleasure of the visitors. Lodge No. 88 Beseda Dancers presented by Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg, danced well, as always. President Mildred Holman presented SL President Nick Morris who spoke on "How Do You Stand With America"; interesting and well-received. This followed by honoring seventy-five members with, "This is Your Life," which was amusing and well put by President Mildred Holeman; she was assisted by Vice President Tillie Helmcamp. The parade of costumes took place at 5 p.m. and closed with a delightful waltz played by the Vrazel's Orchestra; a dance followed until 9 p.m.

The performing committees deserve thanks for a job well done. To all the pastry donors, a hearty thanks for all the generosity. Now, we can relax and later start thinking of next year's Czech Day in 1981, to be bigger and better than ever.

Sister Sue High met with a serious car accident; her car was completely demolished, but she was very lucky to come out of this without broken bones, only minor injuries. Sue was hit broadside by a red-light crasher.

Sister Milady Martin's husband, Clem Martin underwent open heart surgery in March and is doing very well.

Clam is a rice farmer and no one, not even his wife Milady, can keep him from the rice fields. It is a miracle, so Clam take it easy. and value your health.

Sister Mary Johnson, a faithful Birthday Club sister, entered St. Luke's Hospital Monday, October 20th and underwent surgery Thursday, October 23rd. 1 talked to her today and she sounded very cheerful and hopeful because the doctor was very optimistic; he will be able to tell her more in ten days, and will know how long she will stay or go home. Mary was always a very active person and she was very handicapped not being able to get around as usual. It was sad to see Mary get hardly around. We all wish you to get as well as before.

Brother Robert Eubank, a bright and ambitious young man, achieved his goal through hours, days, months and years of studies. Now, Robert is a visiting professor at the Rice Institute here in Houston. In politics, Robert is on the Reagan State Steering Committee since February 1980. Sunday, at the Czech Day, Robert and wife Jeannette, attended with their one-year-old son Brooks Krejci Eubank.

Mrs. Mary Tillie Bartosh, 82, passed away Tuesday, October 21st in the Blue Bonnet Nursing Home in Granger, Texas, where she resided for the past three years. She was laid to rest Thursday, October 23rd. Survivors include her husband, Lad Bartosh of Granger; two daughters, Elizabeth Alice Bily of Houston and Georgie Barber; six grandsons and three granddaughters plus six great-grandchildren. The six sons of Elizabeth and Mira Bily honored their grandmother in serving as pallbearers, namely, John, Paul, Jerry, Robert Joseph and James Bily.

Mrs. Hattie Hegwood, mother of King Hegwood, passed away October 15, 1980 in Beaumont, Texas. Funeral services were held at the Chapel of the Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton, Texas. She was laid to rest in the Rosewood Memorial Park Cemetery in Humble, Texas. Survivors include her husband, Lee Hegwood; two sons, King B. Hegwood of Houston, Gorden Lee Hegwood of Sunvale, California; three daughters, Elsie 0' Brian of Fairbanks, Alaska, Mary Gillet of Beaumont and Beulah Howard of Hollister, Texas; one brother, Oliver Dozier of Oklahoma.

Mrs. Hattie Hegwood was ailing for quite awhile. Her son King and his wife Helen made frequent visits to Beaumont. May she rest in peace. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to both of the families.

The Social Night Committee will be giving away sixteen turkeys at the Thursday, November 20 Social Night for the Thanksgiving holidays and, again, December 18 for the Christmas

Wednesday, November 5, 1980 holidays; do come out and be surprised with one or maybe two butterball turkeys. Remember, November 20th and December 18th; both nights sixteen turkeys will go to some lucky persons.

Our regular monthly meeting was held on October 13. Those present stood in a moment of silent tribute to departed members Emily Konvicka, Helen Kroulik, Helen H. Powell, Evan A. Robinson, Jr., Ben J. Stang, Jr., and Alvina S. Thomas.

We had one visitor from Ontario, California. He was Haskell Cox, brother of Harley Cox. Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg reported that the State Royalty Contest was excellent. District Queen Margie Barcak and King Ronnie Barcak both placed second runner-up in their group. Sister Wahlberg thanked Norval and Frances Crossman and A.J. and Marie Stayton for donating Shrine Circus tickets to the Youth Club.

Choral Club President Evelyn Vornsand reported that they are rehearsing for several upcoming performances. For the Dramatic Club, Brother Tim Kostom announced that the Czech play, "Neni panstvo jako panstvo," will be presented on Sunday, November 9. He invited all to come and enjoy the day.

Orchestra Director Rudy Dybala reported that they had been well received at the District V meeting and at the Houston Heights Festival where they were seen on T.V. Members reported on the sick list were J.D. Baethe, Frank Bohac, Beverly Burford, Robert Eubank. Joe 0' Connor, and William Rezek. Mary Quider's mother, Mrs. Ella Bogs, was also on the sick list. We wish all of them a speedy recovery.

District President Norval Crossman thanked the ladies for bringing pastry to

9 the district meeting. He presented a supplemental check to Brother Dybala for the lodge orchestra.

Guide Helen Hegwood led the members in singing "Happy Birthday" to those having birthdays in October.

Refreshment donors were Johnnie and Mary Kosut and Alvin and Janet Raymond in honor of their 34th and 2nd wedding anniversaries, both on October 7.

Door prizes were won by Milert Antrich, Ed Carlock, and Mary Frances Wahlberg. The Liberty Savings & Loan prize was won by Herbert Jarisch.

Our next monthly meeting will be held on November 10 at 7:30. We will have initiation of new members at this meeting. Recommendations for changes in our Rules & Regulations will be read.

DISTRICT V MEETING AT HOUSTON LODGE NO. 142, HOUSTON October 12, 1980

The fall meeting was held at Houston Stefanik Lodge No. 142 on October 12, 1980. President Norval Crossman convened the meeting at 2 p.m. with Dennis Veselka for District V presenting the colors and leading in the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Henry Linhart of Lodge No. 142, extended a warm welcome to the Supreme Lodge officers, District V officers, sisters, brothers and guests.

He stated that they are all a small lodge, but a lodge to be proud of. A big applause followed for a wonderful dinner.

First Vice President Alvin Sefcik thanked Lodge No. 142 for their well-organized dinner and the hospitality extended to all who attended.

DYC Richard Wahlberg and Assistant DYC Dan Berry presented a brief youth program with a song by the group entitled, "Oh Lord It's Hard To Be Humble." DYC Richard Wahlberg was then presented with a birthday cake by the youth.

Secretary Pearl Hanka called the roll of District V lodges, with nine out of eighteen lodges represented.

First Vice President Alvin Sefcik expressed how honored we are to have Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala and wife Evelyn with us today, also District V Director Louis Hanus, District V Sales Representative Evelyn

Mikeska, Rest Home Director Herbert Nowotny, Publication Committee Tommie Lostak, By-Law Committee Sidon Tumis and newlyelected Mildred Holman, Insurance Committee Helen Hegwood, Finance Committee Jerry Prochazka, DYC Richard Wahlberg and Assistant DYC Dan Berry.

Second Vice President Victor Peter welcomed all the guests.

President Norval Crossman and 1st Vice President Alvin Sefcik appointed the following members on the Auditing Committee: Brother Jerry Ermis, Tim Kostom and Sister Delores Prochazka.

The minutes were read and approved.

We recessed for 15 minutes and reconvened at 2:40 p.m.

President Norval Crossman commented on how bad the financial condition of District V was last fall; however, with the money-making project and idea by Brother Louis Hanus, we made lots of money, which, of course, required a lot of cooperation from all the lodges. He named the people who donated to the hospitality room and otherwise as follows: Louis Hanus, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Holeman, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wahlberg, Mr. and Mrs. Norval Crossman, Liberty Savings Association, Lodge No. 88, Roy Bell Co., who furnished all the paper goods, Mrs. Gene Dobesh, Mrs. Mary Schenburn, Mrs. Tillie Helmcamp, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Wehring, Mr. and Mrs. John Hilsher, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Finn and others.

Sister Tillie Helmcamp complimented Mr. and Mrs. Crossman and all their helpers at the Hospitality Room at the convention, and asked for a round of applause.

First Vice President Alvin Sefcik and Second Vice President Victor Peter also complimented all who planned this and made it possible to be such a success.

Treasurer Tommie Lostak gave the financial report. The Auditing Committee then picked up the books.

District V Director Louis Hanus gave his report, which is attached to the minutes. The highlights of his report are as follows: Lodge No. 172 Pasadena is planning a new lodge building; Lodge No. 142 paid off loan to the Home Office; Lodge No. 88 Houston is the top lodge in policy-holders; we had 2,063 new issues of insurance for $15,145,000, also had 1,876 terminations for a total of $7,077,000 with a net gain of 187 certificates in the amount of $8,690,000; Lodge No. 81 Needville continues to reduce their note to the Home Office; interest rates are presently 10 percent; subscription list for Vestnik stands at

10 10,950; Vestnik will be published by the Stillhouse Hollow Publisher in Temple, Texas; cost of the 1980 Convention was $230,000; advertising commercially will not be permitted in the Vestnik, a check will be made to apply for non-grofit permit for mailing the Vestnik which is a considerable saving; workshops will be again held in 1981; and gained in assets for the first nine months $1,096,000.

DSR Evelyn Mikeska gave her report in detail which I have attached to the minutes. The highlights of her report are: Our quota being $1,400,000 and so far 465 applications have been written in the amount of $3,000,000; three new sales representatives have been added; sales for the month of September went down, only 33 members with $195,000 in sales. Number 1 in the district for September is Sister Tillie Helmcamp Lodge No. 88, with $84,000 and Number 2 is Brother Louis Hanus with $67,000 in sales. Sister Mikeska encouraged all to sell more, and especially those who haven't sold any in 1980.

DYC Richard Wahlberg gave his detailed report, which has been attached to the minutes. Briefly he mentioned seven major functions which the youth participated in: the State Youth Leaders' Retreat; the District V Seminar; District V Swim Party; District V YAD; District V Camp; State YAD and State Royalty. If anyone wishes to read his full report, it was published in the Vestnik October 22nd.

Rest Home Director Herbert Nowotny reported on our Rest Home in Needville. He stated that Mr. Marx, the administrator, reported that all 58 rooms are occupied; all bills are paid; driveway was paved; 2 light poles were given to the Rest Home by the Light Company; and all new equipment is paid for. Then Brother Nowotny reported the sad news about the death of Mrs. Marx, which saddened us all.

Brother Nowotny said Mr. Marx was continuing his job well in spite of his loss.

Editor Rudy Sefcik called President Crossman relating his regrets for not being able to attend.

Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala was then asked to speak.

He gave us a very informative brief message. He tirst commented on the delicious lunch; we all agreed with him.

He explained that volunteer work is very important and suggested that all individual lodges should keep a record, due to IRS. Some fraternal societies are being inspected as of now. All this information he gave us was excerpts from the National Fraternal Congress in

VES TN f Pittsburgh. He also talked about the Data Automation Process. He said high-pressured sales talk is not necessary, only know how to analyze your client, as to how much they can afford and then sell accordingly, also do not compare with Commercial Insurance Company, because there are many that are much, much larger. He said District V Director Louis Hanus is well-representing our District V. Important also, why people do things in intelligence in service, asking, "Why am I doing these things?" He thanked all for their vote at the convention. He then asked if anyone had any questions.

The Auditing Committee reported the books in order. Brother Harry Finn made a motion, seconded by Sister Tillie Helmcamp to accept the report.

Brother Jerry Prochazka asked to speak: He said, "I salute Sister Frances Crossman for an unending effort and should be a "Mrs. SPJST." Sister Pearl Hanka expressed her feeling about the hard work and time consuming work that Brother Louis Hanus undertook during our money raising project. I think the credit should go to all three people, namely Louis Hanus and Mr. and Mrs. Norval Crossman, who headed this endeavor.

New Business...DYC Richard Wahlberg asked to have only a spring District V meeting instead of two each year, which will be considered in our 1981 spring meeting.

President Charlie Matcek of Lodge No. 81 Needville extended an invitation to host our spring meeting in March 1981 and it was gratefully accepted.

Second Vice President Victor Peter announced the Czech Play at Lodge No. 88 on November 9, 1980 at 2 p.m.---four hours of entertainment with Lodge No. 88 Concert Orchestra and then the play.

The Dramatic Club was organized in 1920...sixty years of entertainment.

Brother Tim Kostom and Sister Frances Olexa were two of the charter members present. Brother Peter also said the Pasadena Building Committee is ready to build a new lodge home in Pasadena.

SPJST LODGE NO. 47, SEATON CHORAL CLUB Dear Members and Readers, When the Choral Club began, one of its objectives was to preserve our ethnic heritage through the medium of song.

Of equal importance is our desire to entertain others.

When we sang at Leisure Lodge Nursing Home October 28, those two purposes were served to the delight of the resident-audience---some are relatives, friends or once-neighbors, others who enjoy having a "live" program.

With their attention, response and "thank you; please come again" to our program, we were gratified and richly rewarded.

Director Annie Jakubec selected the music, alternating waltzes and polkas; "Church in the Wildwood," "Waltz Across Texas" and "God Bless America" celebrated the coming Thanksgiving season, our Texan nature and our country's bounties.

A very good thing about our members is that most of them try to attend most happenings planned. If for work or distance reasons some miss one event, they make the following one a balance is maintained and the Choral Club keeps active.

Singing for the Leisure Lodge folks were: Willie and Adeline Kohutek, Lillian Kosarek, Anne Krcha, Agnes Schiller, Franklin Connor, Thelma Bartosh, La Verne Vanicek, Dorothy Morris and Michael Morris.

Otto and Matilda Hanus, Martha Klusacek, Helen and Henry Janacek, Georgia Sodek, Annie Jakubec, Dorothy Pechal and Ruby L. Bolton sang too.

Henry Janacek gave us accompaniment and played for Helen as she sang "Blue Skirt Waltz". Dorothy Morris announced the songs, and each CC member introduced himself at the close of the program for a closer rapport with our listeners.

Instead of singing at a rest home, we will have rehearsal/meeting Tuesday,

Wednesday, November 5, 1980 November 11 at 7:30 p. m.---new Winter season time.

Christmas carols will be practiced since we will not hold any other practices and our forthcoming activities are going to take us to local nursing centers, entertaining those less fortunate than we. Our Christmas gift to them, it is a goodwill gesture---one which comes from the heart.

Plans for our annual Christmas party will be announced; the special events committee will report on their decision and other pertinent information for the club's interest is to be given.

Come, all of you; give the Choral Club your support as you have in the past.

You, each of us and the club will benefit, not to mention the fun and closeness we always have.

October 18, 1980to go to Six Flags and Flags and everyone had fun. I rode most we returned about 11 p.m.; the rides are of the rides with my mother and father and especially enjoyed the log ride, we just great and a lot of fun.

Those attending from the youth club all got real wet. Another fun ride was were: Karen, Michael, Robert and the Judge Roy Scream; that is a lot of Arlene Honza; Suzanne, Melissa, Amy, fun, but a little scary at first. I can't wait Kimberley and Gail Macalík; Lisa, to go again.

ITEMS OF INTEREST DAIRY HERDS UP SHARPLY After a 20-year downward trend, the number of dairy cows in the United States is on the way up and is currently at a three-year high. That means more milk, and increased supplies may have a price dampening effect in future years that may ultimately affect returns.

Milk cows numbered 10,840,000 this past July, the highest total since April 1978, points out Dr. Bud Schwart, economist in dairy marketing with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

From January 1960 to January 1978 milk cows numbers declined steadily from 17,645,000 to 10,925,000. By December 1978 there were only 10,839,000 milk cows in the U.S. and by the end of last year the total stood at 10,803,000.

As far as the Texas dairy herd is concerned, milk cow numbers have generally followed the national trend since 1960, Schwart points out. The Texas herd numbered 590,000 in January 1960 and then declined steadily to 348,000 in January 1969. During the early 1970's, though, there was some herd expansion, with milk cows reaching a high of 360,000 head in January 1973. During 1978 and '79, the Texas dairy herd declined to the 310,000 to 313,000 range, then moved upward to around 315,00 this past January and has held steady.

The increase in milk cows has contributed to the boost in milk production in both Texas and across the nation, says Schwart. He believes that a favorable milk-feed ratio has been a major factor in the expansion of dairy herds despite ever-increasing costs.

COUPON SAVER'S SECRET ORGANIZE Organize to get the most from food coupons, says Linda McCormack, a family resource management specialist.

Develop a simple, concise storage system in order to locate coupons quickly, she suggests.

For example, arrange an expandable accordian file alphabetically by product categories--bakery goods, breakfast foods, frozen foods-- or use a series of envelopes kept in a shoe box or drawer.

Mrs. McCormack is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

Once a week, sort coupons, circling expiration date with red ink, and arrange coupons in each compartment so the ones due to expire in the month are in front.

Transfer this week's coupons to a coupon holder or put them with the shopping list, the specialist recommends.

Refund Forms Keep refund forms and qualifiers in an organized system, also, she continues.

File UPC codes, proof-of-purchase seals, inner seals and cash register tapes in separate envelopes, alphabetically by brand name.

Boxes, Labels To save space, collapse all boxes so they lie flat. Remove some outer labels from boxes cutting and peeling them off the cardboard backings, the specialist says.

Refunding Some manufacturers offer a refund to all customers who have bought a particular product.

The shopper can take one of the refund forms, fill it out and mail it to the address given, accompanied by whatever proof-of-purchase is required.

It often takes four to six weeks to receive the refund, so keep a log listing the companies, Mrs. McCormack advises.

Refund-Form Sources If refunds require "forms" or "required blanks," the request will not be honored without them.

Make a list and stick to it.

Check the sales. Use midweek and Sunday papers to prepare a shopping list, and clip any coupons.

Remember, a bargain is not always a bargain, even if an item is featured in `a splashy end-of-aisle display. Check the prices and signs.

Shop with open eyes. Compare prices, scan the shelves up and down, as well as across, the specialist adds.

HOW PROFITABLE ARE STOCKER CATTLE? Whether or not producers can make money from stocker cattle this winter depends largely on how well they buy and sell the animals as well as their rate of gain.

Yet, to make sound management decisions, stocker cattle operators must know what they're up against, and that means developing a budget, points out Norman Brints of Vernon, area economist in management with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

Brints provides some estimates of variable costs for budgeting purposes which total $400.50 a head. These are based on grazing of wheat pasture at 25 cents per head per day, a stocking rate of two acres per head, 130 days of grazing, a 3 percent death loss and stockers grading high good. His costs include the following for a 400-pound steer: steer cost, $320; death lost, $9.60; wheat pasture, $32.50; hay, $12; medicine and veterinary costs, $3; salt

Brother Rudolph Lostak, a 97-year-old resident of Danbury, was awarded a blue ribbon at the Brazoria County Fair Senior Citizen's Day held 8 October 1980, which was six days before his birthday. This honor was awarded Brother Lostak for being the oldest person attending the fair for the second straight year. Additional honor was presented in the father/son combination to Brother Rudolph and his son, Brother Tommie H. Lostak, for the total year award. Their total amounted to 158 years, and this presentation has been awarded to the same family tree for three consecutive years. Brother Rudolph Lostak, a member of longstanding and faithful worker while in his younger years was very active at Lodge No. 91 in Crosby, and Brother Tommie Lostak is secretary of Lodge No. 139, and a member of the Publication Committee in District V. [Brother Rudolph Lostak now resides with one of his granddaughters, Lorenda in Danbury—Editor] and minerals, 56 cents; miscellaneous expenses, $2; hauling and marketing, $5; and interest, $15.84.

Based on these expenses (not: including labor or a pickup), the economist lists the following breakeven prices per hundred pounds depending on the rate of gain per day for the 130-day grazing period: $75.56 with a 1-pound gain; $71.26 with a 1-1/4-pound gain; $67.31 with a 1- 1/2-pound gain; $63.87 with a 1-3Apound gain; and $60.68 with a 2-pound gain.

By using a breakeven price, a producer can determine the price he must receive to at least get his operating money back, notes Brints. As the rate of gain increases, the breakeven price drops.

Producers can boost the rate of gain or the stocking rate through a

supplemental feed program, adds Brints. Of course, the economics of such a program depend on the price of cattle in relation to the price of feed and the amount of additional gain. Usually a high energy supplement fed at the rate of 1 percent of body weight will increase gain per head by about 1/2-pound per day. If supplement costs $150 per ton, then cost per pound of gain would be 75 cents if 5 pounds of feed is fed per head per day.

As production costs continue to increase, stocker producers need to consider several factors in making sound management decisions. Excluding the calf purchase price, interest rate and cost of pasture are the two key factors that influence producers' decisions for a given grazing situation, believes Brints. However, some of these

VESTNtK management and $99 for high-level management. Projected variable costs for oats are similar: $78 per acre under typical management and $104 under a high level of management.

Farmers with costs similar to these can calculate their breakeven price per bushel to cover variable costs by using projected yields, notes Dr. Ashley Lovell, area economist in management with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A and M University System.

While commodity prices must at least cover variable costs in the short run, all production costs must be covered in the long run for economic survival, emphasizes Lovell. Furthermore, in an inflationary economy, revenue from commodity sales must be sufficiently adequate to account for the inflationary effect on certain production costs.

For producers interested in planting small grains for winter pastures, projected variable costs for the coming season are $70 per acre under typical management and $96 under high-level management. Small grain pasture costs arc a key variable upon which stocker cattle operators decide on buying stockers or running stockers on a gain contract.

Current, accurate budgets are a must for making valid decisions in marketing, financing and production, says Lovell.

Not only do crop budgets help determine the optimum crop mix for a farm, but they also provide a benchmark against which actual production costs and performance can be measured. typical

Based on these factors, the economist offers several examples with regard to the variable costs mentioned earlier and a rate of gain of 1-1/2 pounds per head per day to increase the breakeven price by one cent per pound: --interest rate must increase by 5 percent.

--pasture cost must increase by 5 percent.

--pasture cost must increase by $3 per acre.

--cost of pasture paid on an in-weight basis must increase by 35 cents per hundredweight per month.

Having a good handle on operating costs and how they affect profitability is a key to a successful stocker cattle operation, contends Brints.

Men's neck ties serve many purposes -especially as a key to the well-dressed look of today's fashions, says Becky Saunders, a clothing specialist.

"Perhaps most importantly, a tie 'ties together' or coordinates the suit or jacket and slacks with the shirt," she says.

Mrs. Saunders is on the home economics staff of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A and M University System.

A tie also extends the wardrobe, and it adds versatility, she says.

For example, garments that ordinarily would not be worn together can look dynamic when worn with the "right tie."

In making sure a tie is "right," colorwise, remember a tie "works" if it does one of the following: accents a secondary color in the suit, jacket or shirt, repeats colors from the suit, jacket or shirt Once you understand how to make colors "work," you can advance to additional fashion-combination techni.ques.

For example, you can experiment with patterns -- you can combine a patterned tic with another-patterned suit or shirt as long as one pattern is noticeably dominant.

Tic width is important, too, Mrs. Saunders says.

King steaks have a round or "eye" muscle -- cut it out and prepare as a special delicacy in the same manner as scallops.

Or, dip it in batter and deep fry.

Since a tie is a focal point, it helps draw attention to the face. Because of its shape and placement, a narrow tie makes the face and body look slimmer.

Today's most popular widths are two to three inches.

If you want to make wider ties narrow, just do this: Release the stitches from the back side, starting at the widest end to the middle of the tie.

Determine the amount to be reduced.

Trim the tie interfacing that amount.

Then fold under or trim away extra tie fabric.

Next, glue or stitch the underneath seam back in place. Then press lightly.

KING MACKEREL FOR EATING Don't discard kingfish after the sport of catching them.

"Discarding them is an unfortunate waste of meat," says Annette Reddell, a seafood consumer education specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A and M University System.

"King mackerel just need extra-special treatment for first-rate eating," Ms. Redden points out.

The secret lies in the handling of the fish as soon as it is landed.

First, bleed the fish as soon as possible.

Do this by slashing the king across the gills and then holding it upside down so the blood can drain.

Then, ice down the fish quickly. Letting it lie around on a hot boat deck will ruin it.

As with other large fish, fillet kings or cut them into steaks. Trim away the

Here are some recipes to use with kingtish or any other species: Oriental King Mackerel Steaks 2 pounds king mackerel steaks 114 cup orange juice 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 tablespoons ketchup 2 tablespoons melted fat or oil 2 tablespoons chopped parsley 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon oregano 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 finely chopped clove garlic Cut steaks into serving-size portions.

Place fish in a single layer in a shallow dish.

Combine remaining ingredients. Pour sauce over fish, and let stand for 30 minutes, turning once.

Remove fish, saving sauce for basting.

Place fish on a well-greased broiler pan.

Broil about three inches from source of heat for four to five minutes.

Turn carefully, and brush with remaining sauce. Broil four to five minutes longer or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork.

Serves six.

When cooking over the coals, be sure the flame is very low.

If a smoky flavor is desired, soak hickory chips or other hard wood overnight and put on the tire to create smoke.

Cook fish slowly, basting often with sauce. Use well-greased, hinged wire grills for easier handling of fish.

Barbecued Spanish or King Mackerel 2 pounds mackerel fillets or other fish fillets 3f4 cup vegetable juice 1/2 cup hickory-flavored barbecue sauce I/2 teaspoon salt Cut fish into serving size portions. Place in a single layer, skin side down, in a well-greased baking dish 13 x 9 x 2 inches.

Combine remaining ingredients. Pour over fish.

Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork.

"Everybody wants you to pick it up but nobody wants you to put it down."

This version of being caught between a rock and hard place perfectly describes the neverending buildup of solid waste in Texas, says Jack C. Carmichael, Director of the Solid Waste Management Division of the Texas Department of Health.

"The goal of the Texas Department of Health," says Carmichael, "is to safeguard the health, welfare and physical property of the people through the management of solid waste."

Solid waste won't go away by itself.

Texans generate some 12 million tons of garbage annually at the rate of some five to six pounds per person each day. By the year 2000, we will be creating nearly 20 million tons per year, says Carmichael.

"Population growth and convenience packaging contribute to this increase and to the health and environmental problems confronting solid waste managers," he said.

Currently, approximately 1,200 municipal landfill sites are operating in Texas.

About a fifth of these facilities are owned and operated by private concerns and the remainder are city or county owned and operated.

The Texas Department of Health began permitting sanitary landfills in 1974 and required the upgrading of open dumps where burning and improper disposal created severe health problems.

Sanitary landfilling is an engineered approach to disposing of solid waste on land by compacting it with soil.

When solid waste is brought to a sanitary landfill, it is dumped into a selected spot in a depression or a manmade trench in the ground. It is compacted by heavy equipment and covered over daily with dirt.

"Health nuisances and environmental pollution can be prevented when sites are operated and maintained in accordance with Department rules," says Carmichael.

"Actually, a properlyoperated sanitary landfill generates very little odor or buildup of flies and rodents."

A hearing procedure is used before a solid waste site is given a permit. The Department's permitting process defines six categories of facilities based on population served and type of disposal.

After application is made and , the public notified, the Division of Solid Waste Management reviews the characteristics of the site. Other state and local officials and agencies are asked to comment on the application.

Health Department geologists and engineers inspect the site and conduct a variety of on-site tests, including borings in the soil to help establish the safety of the site.

These preliminaries are followed by public hearings.

It is at these public hearings that resistence to a particular site surfaces to the fullest extent and receives media coverage.

Despite successful landfill operations elsewhere, some communities strongly resist the location of a landfill site.

"Often," says Carmichael, "opposition is from people who don't understand the t.peration of a sanitary landfill, and they are fearful of the unknown."

Some of the most common objections concern the possible decline in property values of nearby homes and land, an increase in traffic, and the attraction of flies and rats to the landfill site.

Fear of pollution of underground or surface water also is expressed.

Carmichael says these objections could be welltaken if made about the old trash dump, but that their applications to a well-planned and properly-operated sanitary landfill can largely be discounted.

Solid waste sites must be as close to the source of the waste as possible.

The farther they get from the center of a town or city, the higher the costs, and economics is a large factor in solid waste disposal, said Carmichael. You have the wear and tear on equipment, increasing fuel costs, and personnel time.

To keep the smaller trucks operating with shorter hauls these days, many communities have installed transfer sta-

20 tions at strategic points.

Refuse is brought to the transfer station and load. ed into large vehicles for transport to its ultimate destination.

Texas doesn't have the problems a lot of states have in finding suitable landfill sites. "We've still got a lot of suitable land, although you say this to people in Houston and they must not believe you.

The Houston area has the problem of rainfall and ground water levels to contend with," said Carmichael.

Cites are looking for alternatives to landfills, and these include reclamation of solid waste and using it as fuel to generate electricity.

Tons of treasure are being buried in Texas each day by cities and towns who can ill-afford the losses. They paid some quarter of a billion dollars to rid themselves of it last year.

This treasure is known as solid waste, but among the wastes are salvageable metals, glass, rubber and paper worth millions if economical ways can be found to reclaim them.

Some 1,200 solid waste landfills are operating in Texas under permits from the Texas Department of Health's Solid Waste Management Division. The main concern is the alleviation of a refuse problem that builds up by some five to six pounds daily for each resident of the state. The aggregate is approximately 12 million tons of municipal solid waste each year, and by the year 2000 the total is expected to approach 20 million tons.

theme. Recycling throughout the state has rescued paper and metal — particularly aluminum cans. Campaigns to eliminate throw-away cans and bottles have been successful in some cities and states.

Forging to the front are those who believe that burnable solid waste should be used to help generate electricity or provide steam for industry, and this is being voiced with more frequency.

Costs of reclaiming the reusable products has been a holdup to recycling efforts, but new technology is being explored to meet this problem. Experience has shown.that as technology is developed and improved, the costs decline.

The high costs of fossil fuel may provide the springboard for these successful efforts.

Solid waste can produce about 50 percent of the heat value of coal, and it can be used in conjunction with coal as a fuel supplement.

Miami, Florida, has one plant which uses solid waste as its total energy source, so it can be done.

Houston, with such a large amount of solid waste daily and skyrocketing costs of disposal, is a prime candidate for a system of solid waste energy recovery. San Antonio is actively planning for the use of solid waste as a supplement for its coal-, fired generating plant.

West University Place in Houston has a unique plan. Residents there separate aluminum cans and the so-called "tin cans," glass and colored glass bottles and jars,

The City of Odessa has joint city-industry experimental project where ferrous metal is recovered from shredded waste. The remaining waste. and additional septic tank pumpings, are used in an open land enrichment program. Results are yet to be finalized.

Browning-Ferris Industries has operated an experimental municipal waste processing facility in Houston which may be expanded.

Recovery of ferrous• metals, aluminum and glass is being done or studied in many Texas municipalities, some with federal grants.

Tarrant County, with a President's Urban Policy (PUP) Grant, is investigating the potential of resource recovery in the urban areas of the county. Waco, using a PUP Grant, will build a resource recovery facility and manufacture industrial process steam using mass incineration.

Waxahachie and Denton have applied for grants from the Department of Energy. Resource recovery and steam production are envisioned.

But meanwhile in Texas, the collection and disposal of some 12 million tons of municipal solid waste last year produced costs of some $250 million, according to Texas Department of Health figures. Land used as landfills neared 1,800 acres last year, and some 3,000 acres per year will be necessary by year 2000 at the present growth rate.

Pfiznive podminky pro pfeyzeti tohotozakladniho vyrazu jsou i v Cegtine same: Cegtina ma sice pro danY vjrznam slovo domYglivY, ale to je ponekud knizni, naproti tomu synonymni slova stejneho yYznamu, nafoukanY, nadutY, jsou vYrazne expresivni, citove zabarvena; pfejate slovo namyglenY doplriuje vhodne tuto fadu (nafoukanY, nadutY, namy glenY) a je pfitom slohove neutralni. - Po roce 1945 k nam ze sloven g tiny proniklo i slovo vYdobytek (za slovenske vjrdobytok), ov g em ujalo se jen v ulg i oblasti publicistiky. Ito ma sve vYhody proti eeskYm vjrrazam synonymnim (vymoknost, zisk), jednak v tesnem spojeni se zakladnim slovesem yydobjrt (odtud jeho pritzraCnost y yznamova), jednak v mo‘inostech vytvaret potfebna automatizovana spojeni, v nich by Ceske synonyma nebyla vhodna (yYdobytky Slovenskeho narodniho po y stani - v tomto frekventovanem spojeni byl pravdepodobne impuls k pfeyzeti, vydobytky revoluce, vedeckeho vjrzkumu ap.).

K slovakismilm sahali z ruznYch

dilvocla a s raznYmi stylovYmi zamery i mnozi Ceg ti spisovatele v minulosti i v soueasnosti. ZajimavY je tfeba priklad z romanu K. Capka Hordubal, kde muzeme Gist: Gazdo, ty bile steny, dv6r, vgecko je tve. Jakji jsi ty pan, celou jabu mag pro sebe. Slovakismy maji v jazyce Ceske umelecke literatury dlouhou tradici, ktera se tahne jako Cervend nit Ili od Boieny Nemcove. Ta na Slovensku pobyvala, sbirala slovenske pohadky, povesti a pisne, vgimala si zvyku, ale i jazyka a mnohe ze slovenskYch jazykovjrch prvkii se pak objevuji v rtizne funkci v jazyce jejich del. Po Nemcove to byl tfeba Adolf Heyduk, kterjr sloyakismil i jako poetismil, basnickYch pryku ye syYch vergich. Alois Jirasek zase volil slovenske slova v souvislosti s prostfedim, ktere zobrazoval, napf. v romane Bratrstvo. Slovakismy se tedy v Ceske umelecke literature objevuji jako prostfedky slouzici umeleckemu zameru.

Nage vefejnost si nekdy klade otazku, zda pri blizkosti obou jazykit a pH pripomenutem uz hojnem jazykovem kontaktu se maji vfibec literarni dila pfekladat, zda by nebylo lepe pfivest Ceske etenafe - i jazykovou vychovou - k tomu, aby Cetli slovenske dila v originale.

Skuteenost je takova, ze se vYznamna dila slovenske literatury prekladaji a ze pfeklady pfispivaji k jejich znalosti i oblibe u CeskYch etenafil. Pfi umeleckem dile nejde totiI jen o pouhou srozumitelnost, ale o to, k umelecke dilo se zmocriuje skuteCnosti cele, v obrazech, v kontextu i podtextu a k takto prave pfisobi na Ctenafe, na jeho smysly i city.

A tak v takovYch asecich textu, jako je prima fee. nebo fee polopfima, v takorYch typech literarnich textu, jako je vnitfni monolog nebo vypraveni v prvni osobe, kdy autor se ztotoilluje s postavou, dostava se pfekladatel do situace, ie to, co je v slovenskem textu, nemti'ie proste jen pfevadet, nYbrZ musi nahrazovat prvky funkene a stylove ekvivalentnimi. Musi text transponovat tak, aby odpovidal stylovYm normam ureujicim vYstaybu pfislugnYch druhii textu v eegtine.

Tyto dne g ni rozdily mezi jazykovou situaci Ceskou a slovenskou maji sve kofeny historicke, jichZ jsme se ui dotkli. Povime si o nich na zaver jegte nee° vic. Vratime se o nekolik stoleti zpet. Tyto dve jazykove formy ziji pak vedle spisovne Ce g tiny-ta se na Slovensku drzi jako spisovnY jazyk ez do poloviny 19. stoleti.

Tyto dve formy jsou zakladem spisovneho jazyka slovenskeho; kulturni zapadni sloven g tina byla zakladem spisovneho jazyka, kterY kodifikoval. A.
