From The Editor HAPPINESS...

Every gesture we make in life is either a firm or faltering step toward happiness, something we interpret in terms of what we do not have. Those of us who are poor in material things, seek wealth. The sick know that happiness lies in health. The lonely want companionship; the harassed are eternally seeking the solitud . of seclusion. Happiness is interpreted always in terms of the things we do not have.

What would life be without loyalty?

Loyalty is the finest fibre in the human breast --- it awards alike the humble and the great --- makes the small man big and big men bigger.

Take loyalty from the heart of a saint and von have the likeness of a devil.

The greatest thing in life is man's loyalty to many - loyalty to the friend who protected him when his character was being assailed --- that heart quality of true manhood --- true Odd Fellowship that innate stamp of fair play which prompts us to hand out the square deal instead of the double cross.

Loyalty to the friend who knows all about you and still loves you.

We need no law; no jury, or no judge to tell us when we are wrong.

We need but heed the instant signal from within to condemn a thought intention or an act that is not square.

The world's best definition of loyalty and honesty is engraved upon the heart of every man, and is ever retraced by each beating pulse.

The reward for loyalty and honesty is in the nobleness of the act itself --- the most bitter penalty for its disregard is the insistent whispered hissing of the soul.

We have all heard that phrase at certain times in our lives. Well, this editor is a victim of plans made and changed by Mother Nature, also.

By a fraternal letter, we excused ourselves from attending the District VI SPJST Fall meeting in Moravia Sunday, October 5th stating that we would be at the Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas and announced the same on our West Polka Show program the Sunday before.

We have had a number of telephone calls asking why we did not attend, so we will explain very briefly - Early Sunday morning, in the wee hours, our older son, Terry. became very ill with some kind of virus; he had planned to go to Czech Day to dance with the Czech Folk Dancers of

Wednesday, October 15, 1980 West which our younger son, Bubba, did; instead he wound up in the West Community Hospital Emergency Room for a shot and some prescriptions. It was Sunday, and everyone knows how that goes; in the afternoon, we got the prescriptions filled and no Czech Day! We hope that explains our absence; we missed all who attended. *** About two weeks ago we received a note from SL President Morris stating that he had received a letter from Sister Rose Sicner, director of the Czech stage play "Neni panstvo jako panstvo" (translation: "There is no nobility or aristocracy, like nobility or aristocracy!") Having had been in many Czech plays, operettas, etc. at Lodge No. 88 in "Krouiek Hlahol" and knowing the Czech language, the name alone insures a pleasant evening for everyone; that, this writer can assure!

From the name, one immediately gathers that here is a group of poorer class people who decide to live "like the Joneses" or the "uppercrust." This thought and/or plot alone creates a scenario for much amusement and laughter which the actors and actresses at Lodge No. 88 are so capable of bringing to you. We hope to see it. More next week.

Reunions MARTIN-SABRSULA REUNION The Martin-Sabrsula family reunion will be held Sunday, October 26, 1980 at the Boling Community Center in Boling, Texas, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Families are asked to bring basket-style food enough for your family. Plates, forks, knives, napkins and cups will be furnished. Coffee and tea will be furnished, also. Soft drinks will not be furnished; you may bring your own, if you so desire. If your family has some talent they would like to perform and share for entertainment, please come prepared. Be sure to circle the date of the family reunion on your calendar and come out to have a good time.

held at the Wallis Youth Center in Wallis, Texas Sunday, October 26, 1980.

It will begin with a memorial mass at the Guardian Angel Church at 10:00 a.m. each family is asked to bring a basket lunch; a family style lunch will be served; drinks, plates, knives, forks, napkins and bread will be provided. Please try to attend.

The meeting will start promptly at 1 p.m. and we will try to be completely through no later than 3:30 p.m. There is a youth program being planned and it will be presented before 2 p.m., the meeting will be interrupted for the program. For the youth in the district, there is an activity planned for in the afternoon, so do come and see what is planned. The lodge banners will be displayed, be sure to bring your lodge banner.

There will be a sausage dinner, with all the trimmings served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. by the host Lodge No. 79 and they always have a good meal. Come for dinner and stay for the meeting at 1 p.m.

The day will conclude with a dance from 5 to 9 p.m. We hope to have a good attendance for all day and for the dance.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO

LODGE

NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO

Dear Members and Friends: Lodge No. 133 San Antonio held its regular monthly meeting Sunday, September 21st. Due to the absence of President Emil Matula who was on out-of-town business, Vice-President Bill Mares conducted the meeting. The meeting was well-attended and we are grateful to those who came.

The minutes of the last meeting were read; also, the treasurer's report was given by Sister Viola Mazac.

Discussion was held on the attending of the coming District VII meeting, which will be held in Corpus Christi October 26th. The membership was asked to consider very much to attend this meeting. It was further voted on that anyone who would furnish

4 their transportation and have at least four riders, the expenses would be paid by the lodge.

Secretary Netek spoke on the lodge participating in projects where all the members could be a part of, if so desired such as: having a bus chartered and going to visit the members in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, visiting the museum at the Supreme Lodge Headquarters in Temple, and many other areas of interest. He mentioned that many of the members are in the age bracket where they don't get around too much, and they would enjoy such a venture; also many of them have not visited the State Capitol nor the Lyndon Johnson Ranch, and other areas that are part of our history in Texas in which most of them are within a 150-mile radius from San Antonio. We should not only talk about it, but we should do something about it. The saying (it's later than you think) is very true. Doing things together has a tendency to bring the members closer together. In general you practice "Fraternalism" on a higher-scale, which is enjoyable to yourself and you also see more results in your lodge.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, October 19 at 1505 S. Gevers, at 2 p.m. We urge all the members to attend. A great party is planned for our Christmas Holidays.

The Czech Choral Club meets every third Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Polish-American Center located on 2611 Mission Road, San Antonio. Anyone interested in singing the beautiful Czech songs, is always welcome. Come out and try us; you will like it.

74, LOVELADY

Dear Members and Guests: We had George Self and the Amarillo Express entertaining our dancing fans.

The attendance was good, with many guests who were at our lodge for the first time. We appreciate all you members inviting your friends to enjoy our lodge.

It really was a shock to hear about Faye Hamlin, who died of a heart attack; she was only 50 years old. Faye had a good health record and never had heart problems before and she appeared to be of best of health; that shows we don't know when our time comes.

We need more sales representatives for selling SPJST insurance in our area; we need one in Trinity, Palestine, Lufkin, Elkhart and Kenard, Texas, so if any of

you members are living in these places and are really interested, please come to our monthly meeting which takes place at the SPJST Lodge No. 74 in Lovelady every second Monday of the month, 7:30 p.m. A person wanting to become a sales representative has to be a member for at least one year and has to be approved by the local lodge and also Supreme Lodge Home Office in Temple. It won't be any problem once you are approved. I will be happy to get anybody started and give them all the information I know about the classes of life insurance that the SPJST,Society has to offer. In addition, I will be glad to perform my service free to whomever is interested. SPJST has the best insurance I know of with so much other benefits that other life insurance companies do not offer; and that's the reason I would like to see it spread around in our area of the State of Texas.

Those of you who are ill, get well and look forward for a happy life.

Dear Members and Friends: Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, September 14, 1980 at our Hillje SPJST Hall with President Jerry Polasek presiding over the meeting.

We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Brothers Ed Trochta, Dorman Nickels and Gilbert Hafernick. Our most sincere sympathy to the families of these loved ones. May our departed brothers rest in peace.

Brother Ed Trochta lived in the Louise area and was a retired automobile dealer.

Brother Dorman Nickels lived in the Wharton area and was a retired county judge.

Brother Gilbert Hafernick lived in the Hillje area and was a retired farmer.

Secretary Albert Kresta, Sr. read the minutes of the August meeting; they were approved as read.

The members were reminded of the District VI meeting in Moravia Dining Hall, Sunday, October 5th. The District VI meeting will be hosted by Lodge No. 4 Hallettsville and Lodge No. 23, Moravia.

At our monthly meeting, it was discussed that we needed to paint our chairs in the hall; so, on Thursday night, September 18, several of our members got their painting clothes on and painted chairs. Everyone worked very hard and a nice job was done.

There were seven members present and one visitor at our monthly meeting.

Our next meeting was set for October 12, at 2 p.m. at the Hillje SPJST Hall in Hillje.

LODGE NO. 9, SNOOK

Dear Readers: Our monthly meeting was held Wednesday, October 1, 1980 with all officers present.

The reports and minutes were read and approved.

A Cleanup Day was discussed. On November 1, 1980, an annual SPJST supper is planned. Each family is asked to bring enough chicken for their families and the men will barbecue it.

Please have them at the hall no later than 3 p.m.; also, the ladies are to bring a vegetable, salad and or sweet. Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m., and annual meeting at 7:30 p.m, Everyone, young as well as old, is cordially invited.

Let's support our local lodge. Come out for an evening of fellowship, fun and food.

LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE

Dear Members: Our meeting was called to order by President Edwin Marek.

Kristie Waits and Melanie Zavodny presented the flag and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We then remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members.

Secretary Nelda Marek read the minutes and correspondence: a thank you note from the family of Brother Alton J. Fojtasek for the flowers, and a note from Sister Faye Hudson who was the winner of the ceiling fan that the youth club gave away in a drawing.

Sister Faye said she was glad to be a winner and thanked the youth club and also praised them in the good work they have been doing.

President Marek welcomed visitors SL Vice President Bernie Gebala, State Field Manager Gene McBride and Charlie Waits.

Sister Carolyn Dorner reported to us about the State YAD contest which was held recently. Our candidate Queen Kelli Andel and her Duchess Diane

Wednesday, October 15, 1980 Dorner did not win, but that we should be proud of Kelli who did a good job presenting her speech. We are proud of you Kelli for getting that far and representing our lodge so well in State.

Brother Wilburn Murrow, a volunteer fireman at Rogers, brought a poster to hang in the hall announcing the sale of barbecue tickets, it will be held at the Rogers Civic Center, Saturday, the 18th from 4 to 8 p.m.) You may purchase tickets at Red Ranger Store or any fireman. Their slogan is: "You Come To Our Barbecue; We Come To Your Fire." We all need to support them for they are a very important part of our community. I believe they also will be selling tickets at the door, however, it makes it easier if they know in advance how many to prepare for.

Salary Committee was appointed and they are: Sister Pat Sebek and Brothers Terry Taylor and Ben Tyroch.

We welcome another new member, Joseph Nemjo secured by Sales Representative Sister Louise Zavodny.

SL Vice President Bernie Gebala spoke to us, a continuation of what Lodge No. 24 Vice President Dan Sebek spoke to us at our last meeting. Our interest in our lodge should be insurance and how to grow in that way.

He introduced State Field Manager Gene McBride and said that he would be attending our sessions to help us learn more about our insurance program. We are glad so many were interested to attend these sessions and we want to invite any member who may want to learn more about insurance, not only as sales representatives or as someone who wants to become one.

Selling insurance is every member's duty to tell people about our insurance and then refer them to our sales representatives; by this way, we can reach more people and our lodge will grow. We set the dates for our sessions on Wednesdays: October 15 and 29, and November 5, at 7:30 p.m.

We learned that our October 1st meeting was an important date for SL Vice President Bernie Gebala because it was his, second anniversary being with the Supreme Lodge. We are glad he is part of this organization.

On a happy note: we planned a social to burn up the mortgage papers because we paid up the hall, so we wanted to celebrate. A Volunteer Committee of Brothers Ben Tyroch, Billie Smetanka and Milton Zavodny was accepted to plan this social. They presented, to the members, to have it Sunday, November 9 at 3 p.m. with a happy hour and a catered barbecue meal at 4 p.m.; the members and their families are invited.

5 Happy Birthday went out to Sisters Albina Dornhoefer, Ella Luksa and LaRita Macek, Brother Bobby Hoelscher and youth members, Melanie Zavodny, Monica Mowdy and Ryan Sebek. We had no October anniversary celebrants, but I forgot one in September. They were Sister Louise and Brother Jerry Zavodny. All members having birthdays and anniversaries this month: "Best Wishes" go out to all of you.

Door prizes were won by Adolph Luksa, Shirley Waits, Mark Mowdy and Monica Mowdy.

The next meeting, which will be our election of officers, will be held Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m.; not our traditional time on Sunday afternoon, so please remember this for we want everyone to attend. This is your privilege to exercise your rights and vote. To be eligible is only to have your local dues paid which is $1.20 that you can pay at the meeting, if they are not paid.

33, BLEIBLERVILLE

whole-heartedly because she is a devoted member of Lodge No. 88 and a model -student at school. Congratulations; we are very proud of you!

SPJST State Royalty was held at Lodge No. 187 in Round Rock on Saturday, September 27th. Our District V King Ronnie Barcak and Duke Jay Mynar were second runners-up and District V Queen Margie Barcak with her Duchess Shirley Barcak also were second runners-up.

Jay Mynar is the son of Brother Malcolm and Sister Joyce Mynar. The two sisters, Margie and Shirley Barcak and their brother, Ronnie Barcak, are the lovely children of our lodge Brother Gene and Sister Georgie Barcak. All these young people deserve praise for their time spent within the youth club.

Although they did not win first place, we still are very proud of them for representing Lodge No. 88.

Remember, our annual affair: the colorful parade with all the Czech costumes, a turkey dinner with dressing and all the trimmings will be served, and a program in the afternoon plus a dance with music by the Vrazels will follow. Make your plans and enjoy a wonderful Sunday.

Dear Members and Friends: The annual Fish Fry of Lodge No. 33 will be held Sunday, October 19, 1980 at the SPJST Hall on FM Road 2502 in Bleiblerville. Serving will begin at 11:30 a.m.; however, fried fish to go will be sold from 9 to 11 a.m. There will be plenty of bread and catsup and chips served with the fish (all you want to eat); also cake and pie will be available and lots of refreshments.

For entertainment there will be a dance from 2 to 6 p.m. with good music by Sil Krenek.

The public is cordially invited for an enjoyable time at the SPJST Hall in Bleiblerville.

DALLAS CIRCLE OF CZECH WOMEN

Our monthly meeting was called to order by President Ann Zvolanek at 10 a.m. on October 2nd.

The pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag was recited. Guests were welcomed and introduced.

Sister J. Kankrlik read the minutes for August and September, which were approved as read. 'Sister A. Vlk gave a -SPJSTgood financial report for August and September. Sister L. Pavelka read BRIEF BUT IMPORTANT NEWS FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON "thank-you" notes from the Toberny Family, Sister M. Stransky and Sister F. A special event took place at Aldine Schweizer.

The hostesses for October were Senior High School Auditorium on September 22, 1980 when Margie Sisters Mary Sykora, Vlasta Jurcik, Barcak became inducted as a member of Georgia Long, Virginia Blatney, Rose the National Honor Society. Margie is Noska, Helen Oates, Marie Petrik and one of about fifty students to be selected Rosemary Zabojnik.

Sisters Mildred Voss and Anna out of fifteen hundred. This is quite an honor and sweet Margie deserves it Brown are on the sick list and are in the

6 hospital at this time. We wish them a speedy recovery.

We discussed our plans for our Christmas party and December meeting. It was decided that we meet for lunch at Wyatt's Cafeteria (Highlander Room), 200 Northlake Shopping Center,Thursday, December 4 at 10:15 a.m. Meeting will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m., lunch will be served at 11 a.m. and exchange of gifts after lunch. More information in our November meeting.

The Circle would like to charter a bus to Houston to see the Czech play Sunday, November 9th, but we will need more people to fill the bus before making further plans. If anyone is interested, please contact Mary Sebestik at 321-0325 for further information.

Sister A. Zvolanek announced that WFLA will hold their 10th annual Kolache Festival,Sunday, October 19th from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Czech Club, 4930 Military Parkway, Dallas.

Czech dinner will be served, good entertainment, dancing and plenty of kolache to eat and to take home.

Sister B. Reames announced that the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Organization meeting will be held Thursday, October 23, at 8 p.m. at Guardian Savings and Loan Association (Oak Cliff), 543 W. Jefferson Blvd., Dallas. Everyone is welcome.

Pat and Jerry Wilson became parents of a baby girl. Pat is the daughter of Sister Rose Ann Parma and granddaughter of Sister Helen Vrla, Sr.; Diane and Bob Podhrasky also became parents of a baby girl. Bob is the son of Sister Bertha Podhrasky. Congratulations to the happy families!

We are always happy to report the achievements of our young people and at this time we wish to report that Carol Skrabanek, daughter of Henry and Sister Elaine Skrabanek is the 1980-1981 State Queen, SPJST; also, Laura Pottkotter, daughter of Ray and Sister Kathy Pottkotter is State Duchess, SPJST for 1980-1981. They were both crowned at Round Rock, Texas at the SPJST Hall,September 27, 1980. Carol and Laura are members of Lodge 130 Dallas. Congratulations!

Vacations are still making the news; we have several of our members

VESTNfK travelling at this time. Arnold and Sister Helen Vrla Jr., Bob and Sister Helen Oates and Sister Helen Vrla, Sr. are in Hawaii and the surrounding islands.

Joe and Linda Kartous are touring the New England States; Tom and Sister Alice Roberts are in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, enjoying the Autumn foliage, the "Passion Play" and other points of interest. Two of "The Vlk Sisters", Barbara Lingberg and Irene Roche and their husbands are on a month's tour of Europe, visiting Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland and Italy.

Barbara and Irene are daughters of Sister Adell and Joe Vik. We are happy to report that one of our visitors, Mary Kubacak, became our member before the meeting adjourned.

Sunday, October 19, there will be the Sokol Octoberfest held by Sokol Corpus Christi at 5502 Kostoryz Road in the SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Hall.

Activities begin at 2 p.m.: dinner will consist of sausage, sauerkraut, parsley potatoes, green beans, pickles and onions; some real good eating! There will be a battle dance from 4 to 10 p.m., with music by the Tommie Vanek and Leo Majek orchestras. There will also be a country store selling different things such as baked goods, canned goods, etc. In addition there will be a dessert table; for anyone wishing to have a sweet, it will be available.

This is an annual event and we hope it is a big success. Many who are members of Sokol Corpus Christi also are SPJST members. You all come!

AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE

HLAHOL DRAMATIC CLUB OF HOUSTON This is for those who have decided to attend the Czech play, and also for those who are still undecided. Today I will acquaint you with the amateurs who can be as an example, with their kind of spirit and expectations, in devoting time

to our beautiful language, so that it would again resound, as is said - 'on the boards', or on the stage of the theater.

This time a comedy entitled "Neni panstvo, jako panstvo" or "High Society" is our selection.

It is possible that I may make a serious error listing the amateurs as to who should be named first and who last, so I will begin alphabetically. Each was questioned as to what motivated them and why they gladly wished to participate in a Czech play.

Gene Barak was born in Praha, Texas and is known for his many acting parts said, "I'm very glad that I have the opportunity to help so that our Czech language can be heard wherever possible. I am happy to assist - because I am proud of my ancestry."

Vera Cotrinovit, of Moravian descent, born in Prostejov, Czechoslovakia, now living in Houston, about two years, happily accepted the opportunity to take part in a Czech play and to perform for Czech people. She further stated, "During the practice sessions when I hear and, I myself speak Czech, I feel the warmth of my Homeland, though it is so far away. It is very dear to me."

Marie Kostomlatskit was born in Moravia, Czechoslovakia, has been in the USA just a few months. She was surprised that such a small portion of SPJST members attempt to continue Czech traditions and so excitedly said, "Whenever time allows, I consider it an honor to help out in my native speech and acknowledge my ancestral origin."

Milu ge Kovandrova, originally from Ceske Budejovice in Czechoslovakia, has been here only a short time, answered the question of participating in a play, "To take part in a Czech play? Just whenever I can, it will give me nothing but happiness, principally if I can entertain and, secondly, but of equal importance, to do it as we are accustomed to. Though I don't have too much time, I will find time somehow. It is shameful of them who search for excuses and don't apply their efforts in the safekeeping of the Czech language. In the old country we have a saying: 'He who is ashamed of his ancestry, is open to dishonor of all the people.' Even my husband plays in the Czech orchestra in Lodge 88 though we are not members. All of our efforts are based on love of our Czech ancestry."

Blanka Nedbalkovit was born in Roudnice, Czechoslovakia and has been in the USA several yea r s and now in Houston. Their homestead is home to their entire family, and they also have a business interest. She agrees with and assists in the Hlahol Club saying, "I am glad to take a part, at the same time to

Wednesday, October 15, 1980 give to the audience the chance to view those times when our peOple in the countryside lived and experienced all kinds of problems of living."

Vi lem Soueek teaches Czech at U of H and stated, "Czech theatrics bring back memories of my childhood, when my father instilled in me, during my early years, the desire to take part in plays.

Today I return to the memories of my youth and thank my father, that even today I can assist in perpetuating the language of my parents."

Jan Schroif is a native of Prague who lived several years in Brazil and finally moved to Houston about 20 years ago.

He is known, it seems, everywhere. There is not a single antic or comedy on the stage or in the Hlahol Club meetings but what our 'Red Skelton' is not at hand. In answer to an interview about his reason for acting again, he immediately replied, "For my love of Czech language, for the Czech theater, I will attempt to help whenever and wherever I can. The only gratification I have is to gladden the spirits of the people in their own language which they like."

Jan Zemko was born in Chicago and in his youth played in Czech and Slovak plays. Here in Houston and environs he is known far and wide because there is no Czech undertaking but what he is helpful to see it come to fruition. Here are his direct words, "I am proud to assist whenever I can, to see that the Czech language persists, and to be an example to those who only promise and promise and never do one thing for the Czech language."

Concerning the writer of this inquiry, who also takes a part, let me say this, "I share the opinion of all the amateurs who should be as models for many others elsewhere. Wherever there are countrymen, in their halls, or in their lodges, there is no group, no nationality, if we do not take into account the underlying principle to protect and nourish our Czech language."

I have presented a picture of the spirit with which the amateurs are producing a comedy for you. Your attendance will be a reward and moral support considering all the time and good will given in this preparation for your entertainment, as we developed it.

Only come - we will play for you.

SPJST SOFTBALL TEAM LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Tuesday night, October 7th, we played the R.E. Express team and we got beat by a score of 4 to 0. They had 7 hits and we only could manage 2, which made a big difference in the outcome of the game.

Tommy Yates hurled a fine game for us allowing 4 runs, only 1 was earned, 7 hits, 3 walks and had 11 strikeouts.

Please remember this is not our full team because several of our ball players, who played on the summer team, are unable to play due to various reasons. It's just several of the players playing for fun and enjoying a few more games before winter sets in. The guys are enjoying playing, however, a few hits and we could be undefeated. Two more games remain to be played and there is still time for that.

Offensively, we only had 2 hits, a triple

by Joe Harasta and a single by Don Jarma, Tommy Yates had 2 walks, Danny Yates, a walk, and Jerry Zabojnik, a walk.

We are scheduled to play again Tuesday night, October 14 and Tuesday night, October 21, both games at 8:30 p.m. at Sam Grand Diamond No. 1.

Sunday afternoon, October 12th, the annual team awards banquet also has been scheduled at the home of Ida and Lionel Schulz.

It's still time to come out and visit with the team at their last game; also, remember: support your lodge dances, they, too, are important and bring your friends!

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS

Dear Readers: September 9, 1980 at 7:30 p.m., I attended the Sales Representatives' class with my son-in-law Roy Peal. (I noticed the pictures, and names in the Vestnik dated September 24', 1980 on pages 4 and 5). The meeting was interesting with the slide projector. Brother Silas H. Smith explained the classes in our new rate book. His dear wife Jeanette operated the projector; she is always his right hand.

After the meeting, there were a few pictures taken. Sister Helen Pavelka was in the kitchen to serve all with the snacks; most of this was her baking: delicious products! Thank you, Helen, for your kindness. Sister Pavelka is District VII president, secretary of the Sokol Corpus Christi unit; also secretary and sales representative and financialsecretary treasurer of the SPJST Lodge No. 117 in Robstown. On top of this, she was elected secretary of the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas. She may serve in many other organizations not known to me to mention.

At 10:40 p.m. we returned home, well-pleased with the informative meeting.

My time is taken up at home with the assistance of my loving daughter Ann Peal. My injured leg has improved some.

I never give up and hope that some day my walker will be put in the closet to rest.

For so many years my collection of pictures is in need to be sorted, and that is what I do in spare time. There will be one more album for Buckholts, Texas Museum. In the year 1881, the township was founded by John Buckholts. We may soon hear from the Buckholts Mayor Richard C. Crowe, about the celebration.

SPJST Lodge No. 79 Meeting and Sokol Corpus Christi

September 11, 1980 at 7:30 p.m., President Frank Veselka called the meeting to order. The attendance was twenty members.. Three new members joined our lodge with $3,000 of insurance. In every meeting we get new members, but the attendance is unchanged. New members' names are read by the secretary; it is voted on with 100 percent "yes." These new members do not have to be present for introduction. In my opinion, we should not vote only to accept the certificate, but also, at the same time, welcome all in person.

Excuses were made for Financial Secretary Millie Elzner and English Reporter Jerry Elzner for not being present.

After forty minutes the meeting was adjourned until October 8 at the same time.

Sokol Meeting

President Gene Lehnert called the meeting to order at' 8 p.m. There were forty members, including all officers and committees present. There were nine new members introduced; all were welcomed with applause.

All reports from the officers and committees were accepted also with applause.

VESTNfK HERITAGE HONORED

Invitation Saturday morning, September 13, 1980, I received a telephone call from Mrs. Annie Elzner Spencer; she said she wished to have some tables in the SPJST and Sokol Corpus Christi Hall for the display Sunday afternoon,September 14.

I said, in our conversation, that I also have some albums, books and pictures, and will deliver them to the hall. At this time, she invited me to have dinner with them all.

At 11 a.m., on the same day, my son-in-law Roy came to my home to load up two boxes in his pickup truck and delivered me to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Spencer. They were notified in advance that we are coming. Roy and Bill unloaded the two boxes and went to the hall to help get the hall ready for the afternoon's program.

I had the honor and pleasure to meet two ladies in the kitchen busy preparing the meal. Annie took me to the room where she had all historical articles.

Their entire house is like a museum.

Then a few minutes later Annie took me to the living room to meet State Representative John Spark from Victoria. Texas; the gentleman is a member of the SPJST in Victoria and he had, with him, the charter for the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas. His mother's maiden name was Marek. She

said that three years ago she taught Czech classes with Mr. Joseph Bittersmann in the high school in Victoria. It was time to eat and my plate was loaded as if for two persons with delicious food. hall and cover the tables with our displays. People who saw it enjoyed same.

Czech Heritage Society of South Texas At 3 p.m. Chairman and President J. B. Sefcik announced to the assembly to move outside in front of the building where the program will start. The U.S. Flag was raised by the troop from the American Legion Post No. 364. There were several speakers. This lasted about thirty minutes. (Many photos were made. At the present time I have none; only one that was in the Corpus Christi Caller.)

After this outside ceremony, we all returned to our seats. The ceremony continued with presentation of the State of Texas Charter by State Representative John Spark to President J.B. Sefcik of Corpus Christi, Texas. At 4 p.m., the Heritage Society honored its present senior citizens who were escorted to the decorated tables by Mrs. Christine Knapek and Mrs. Roman Snapka. At the same time, the charter members received their membership cards.

Christine Knapek, dressed up in the National costume, addressed the senior citizens in Czech and English, and then a short history of each of these named persons. We did miss Adolf Sassin. age

95, and Agnes Elzner Bren. There were some moments where two photographers filmed parts of the program.

Outside, in the program, were the national anthems performed: "Star Spangled Banner," "Spejme dal" and "Hej Slovane." ("Spejme dal" is one of the many favorite Sokol songs).

To date I have no photos from this program only the enclosed clipping from the local newspaper.

These programs were televised on Channel 3 and 6, at 6 p.m. on the same evening.

I had a cassette recorder with me, but it will take some time to find someone to operate it. Finally I met an old friend and member of SPJST, Brother Roy Hranicky, from Sinton, Texas, to do the job for me. I was too far from the speakers to catch the voice. Thank you, Brother Roy, you made a good job.

When this part of the program was over at 5 p.m., I went back to the tables where Mrs. Annie Spencer and I had our display. The music started for the dance.

When State Representative John Spark was close to me and ready to return home to Victoria, I had a little chance to thank him for the State of Texas Certificate he delivered to my lovely great-granddaughter Vanessa Stasa, born March 3, 1979, in Victoria, Texas. Vanessa is the daughter of my grandson Allen and his dear wife Laura Stasa, also of Victoria.

The Edna Polka Boys made good music for the dance and at 6 p.m. I was back in my lovely home. It was one more moment and is added to all those pleasures in the past.

The weather, through the summer, was favoraole for the farmers to reap their farm products; at the present time, the weather is cooler and plenty of rain. It is a second springtime.

I have noticed, for a long time, where the to ai daily paper could grant more space in their columns when it comes to giving well-deserved publicity in our Czech undertaking.

FEATURES PROGRESS AT THE HOME OFFICE BUILDING In following up on some of the mandates and decisions of the recent convention, the Supreme Lodge has proceeded to implement those decisions and with the work involved.

The decision on a new sign, to be more prominent than the previous ones, was made approximately a year ago but for various reasons, the actual construction of the sign was delayed due to a lack of some of the special materials and a decision on the exact configuration of the sign. Nevertheless, the foundation had to be dug and this was started on Tuesday, August Sth, as the accompanying photo shows. The new one is an imposing sign befitting the strength and stability of our SPJST. The new sign is located where the previous three "lollipops", as we had come to affectionately call them, were situated. Actually, there is nothing wrong with the three octagonal signs.

They blend and are harmonious with the architecture of the Home Office building, since the octagonal design coincides with the octagonal structures within the building. We believed then, as we do now, that the three are in good taste, but somehow were not striking enough to call attention to our Home Office structure.

The three signs were moved directly across the parking lot from where the

Work on the erection of the new sign for the Home Office building in Temple started Tuesday, August 5th, when Mr. Mateland Aycock with the Waco Drilling Company brought his equipment onsite and dug the holes for the foundation.

Here we see the giant auger after it had dug the two holes for the sign. It was really something to watch this auger in action and complete a job that would have taken several men four or five days.

The next step was the pouring of the concrete for the two main pillars of the sign.

Then the crane lowered the concrete cross-piece on top of the two support pillars, while workmen attached support bars to the structure so they would "set" in the fresh concrete.

These now front on the First Street entrance and the new sign will front on Main Street, where the set of three were previously located. We feel that the erection of the new sign and the relocation of the three will further enhance our image here in Temple. (See accompanying photos).

Library, Archives, and Museum areas into the basement. Contractor John Hughling moved his work office onto the adjoining lots owned by the Society and work commenced on erecting the metal studs for the walls of the basement area.

At the same time, work started on cutting out the opening for the stairs in the lobby of our Home Office. Naturally, all of this activity has been noisy and very dusty. John and his crew are very

considerate individuals and much of this noisy work was done after office hours.

The architect in charge of the project is Charles Voelter, who was the architect for the design of the Home Office building several years ago, so he is very familiar with the structural details of the building and has a keen appreciation of both the aesthetic and structural factors involved. have always admired and respected people who worked with their hands and we've had plenty of opportunity to witness the workmen doing just that.

One thing that we are all particularly impressed with is the skill with which

Shortly after, the metal framework for the sign itself was put in place and... ....presto! The officers gathered to admire the new sign.

This is Mr. William ("Sonny") Arnold getting into his pickup. Sonny is foreman on the project.

Across the parking lot they also gathered to admire he re-located and re-finished signs at the First Street entrance to the parking lot. these workmen go about their tasks most of them rather young, in their late teens and twenties. There are, however, a couple of "old fogies" in their forties.

Seriously, one cannot help but admire the skill of these young craftsmen and artisans. It restores one's faith in the younger generation to see them handling the tools of their trade with such dexterity and efficiency. They are not afraid to get their hands soiled, either.

Completion of the latter project is expected in the month of November. The sum total of these efforts is Progress...and we are on the move.

(Editor's note: If my memory serves correctly, in December 1957 (our son Terry was still a toddler) we were living in Houston and received a telephone call from Rowena, Tx. requesting this writer to officiate at Brother Bucek's funeral. He was Dr. John J. Shiller's brother-in-law. That is when we met Dr. Shiller and his ever-pleasant daughter, Pauline Shiller, and many of the fine folks and SPJST members in Rowena and vicinity.

Dr. Shiller proved to be a wonderful person. We made one trip to Rowena which we regretted we had to make; that was to officiate at his funeral, however, everyone's time must arrive and he, also,

12 knew it. May honor live in his memory!

He lived a useful and long well-appreciated life of devotion to his fellow human beings. A number of times, on our trips to the Rowena area, we had nice congenial visits in his home.

Saturday, October 4, 1980 while at the PC meeting, I took time out to view our Library, Archives, and Museum at our SPJST Hdq. Building and, of course, his donated collection of the "Country Doctor" of long ago equipment. It is worth seeing!

Last- week, Brother Morris forwarded the following article to us feeling it would be of interest to our members and readers and we feel that it will. With a smile he won many people's confidence which he did not betray. The iarticle follows.)

Henry's Journal LONG, HEALTHY LIFE

By Henry Wolff Jr. Dr. John J. Shiller never smoked, didn't drink, or overeat, went to bed early, and got up early.

That, he said, was the secret to his longevity.

A friend once told him that his grandfather did all that and died at 60.

"He didn't keep it up long enough," Dr. Shiller answered.

Dr. Shiller lived to the ripe old- age of 98.

He was born in Williamson County in 1877, but came to Victoria County 20 years later with his parents, Josef and Rosalie Shiller, who were among the families that settled the old Shillerville Community just south of Wood Hi. When the great hurricane of 1900 hit Galveston, he was in medical school there, but after that he and a number of others transferred to Tulane, where he received his medical degree , in 1903. He was ready to go out into the world as a country doctor.

He started his practice in Victoria County, then moved to Praha for a short time, then spent seven years at Moravia. Once, said in the 11 months he was at Praha, his fees totaled $180, of which he collected only half, along with some corn for his horse. It wasn't unusual in those days to get paid with a pig, some chickens, a sack of corn, or something like that.

Those were also days when an office call cost a dollar, a house call twice that, and 10 bucks was standard for delivering a baby.

The worn saddlebag that he used on his early calls, along with his instruments and medical library, are in the SPJST museum in Temple.

This is the opening to the basement from the lobby shortly after it had been cut. The forms are for the concrete soon to be poured for the sides of the stairwell.

After a few days, this is what the same opening looked like after the steps and side walls in the stairwell were poured.

Dr. Shiller spent 46 of his 56 years in practice at Rowena, a little town out in Runnels County near where I grew up, probably most famous for being the home of Bonnie Parker, old Clyde Barrow's girlfriend. Wonder if he ever had her for a patient?

The reason he went there was for his wife's health. She was the former Annie Louise Shiller, and they were married on October 28, 1902 in Victoria County by

Justice of the Peace Frank Zirjack. She passed away in 1930. They had a daughter, Pauline, who still lives in Rowena.

He has many nieces and nephews from both his and his wife's side living in Victoria County, according to Mrs. Alton (Katherine) Wokaty, who has been working on a history of the families that settled Shillerville. That area was once part of the sprawling Wood Ranch.

This is another view of the steps looking toward the parking lot entrance. The opening will be surrounded by a railing and the steps will have handrails on both sides.

Dr. Shiller was her grandmother's brother, her grandmother being Mrs. Joseph Hosek, niece Rosalie Shiller.

Mrs. Wokaty's mother, Annie, was the first of their children born in Victoria County, in 1896.

She showed me a picture of an old telephone rig that. Dr. Shiller carried with him, in case he got stuck in the mud, which was one of the major obstacles a -country doctor had to contend with. He once recalled that his pants were sometimes so soaked with mud they would stand by themselves after drying out.

All he had to do to get the operator was throw a wire over the telephone line along the road, stick another wire into the ground, and ring central.

If there wasn't a line, all he could do was dig his way out, and hope that his patient could hold on until he got there.

No doubt there were a few babies along the way who couldn't wait, out of the 1,400 he delivered.

That's almost triple the population of Rowena.

The Texam Construction office shed is located on the first vacant lot (also owned by the SPJST, plus 3 other lots) just south of and adjoining the parking lot. This entire area is enclosed with a security fence for the vehicles and equipment belonging to Texam.

The general contractor for the re-location project is Mr. John Hughling, Texam Construction Company of Temple.

TEMPLEITES ENJOY NINE-DAY CANADIAN TOUR During the first two weeks (October 3-11), several Temple couples enjoyed a sightseeing tour in Canada. Among the tourists were Brother F.W. and Sister Emily Stuteville of Rogers, Texas, members of Lodge No. 47 Seaton; Sister Stuteville is a sales representative for her lodge.

On the first day of their scheduled activities, the group arrived at Toronto

on Air Canada Flight 787 from Fort Worth at 12:30 p.m. They were met on arrival by their personal Canadian escort clearing customs and immigration.

Afterwards, they were transferred to the Hilton Harbour Castle to relax and prepare themselves for a sightseeing tour of Toronto, which took them to the Old and New Hall, a drive through the Provincial Government area at Queen's Park and then to the residential, areas of the city. At 8 p.m., a welcome dinner at the Hilton Harbour Castle was prepared and served to the group.

The next day the group departed for the Niagara area where they enjoyed a drive along the Queen Elizabeth Way through the fruit-growing area of Southern Ontario to a picturesque historical town known as Niagara-on-the-Lake, situated on Lake Ontario. A delicious lunch was served at a charming place called Oban Inn. This stop gave all the time to explore the town with its boutiques and antique shops before departing along the scenic Niagara Parkway. They also viewed the magnificent American and Canadian Falls and spent some time in the park area of Niagara Falls.

October 5, the group departed Toronto and continued eastward to the Thousand-Island area of the St. Lawrence. At Ganaoque they boarded a sightseeing boat for a cruise through the Thousand Islands. While everyone enjoyed a lunch on board of the boat, they continued through the fall foliage of the Ontario countryside. After the group

14 arrived in Ottawa at the central hotel close to Parliament Hill, they were ready for a good meal and retired for the evening.

Monday, October 6, they started for another tour of Ottawa with a visit to Parliament Hill, the National Arts Center, the Prime Minister's Residence and lovely residential areas; also included on the tour was a drive along the canal and through the parkland to the Experimental Farm, with a beautiful display of flowers and trees. That afternoon they leisurely explored that capital city with many museums and attractions and also enjoyed a cruise on the Rideau Canal. The group again enjoyed a delicious dinner and an overnight stay at the Four Seasons Hotel.

Tuesday morning, October 7 everyone had breakfast on their own before they departed from Ottawa at 10 a.m. for a one hour drive to Montebello. A scrumptious lunch was served at Chateau Montebello. Chateau Montebello is a gracious country estate in the heart of Canadian woodlands. It is locally known as the "Largest Log Cabin in the World." Another dinner and overnight stay was scheduled for them at Chateau Montebello.

The morning of October 8, breakfast was eaten at Chateau Montebello and, afterwards, a drive to Montreal which was a two-hour drive by private motorcoach, awaited everyone's curiousity. Following an enjoyable outing, it was time to arrive at the downtown hotel -- Chateau Champlain. At 2 p.m. a sightseeing tour of Montreal, the "Paris of North America," was scheduled, which included Old Montreal, the historic area where the city began in the early 17th century and a trailer-train ride to the top of Mount Royal for a panoramic view of the city.

During the morning of October 9, they visited the Quebec Handicraft Center and broused around the original gifts and souvenirs. A visit took them to the Botanical Gardens which contain 23,000 species and varieties of universally identified flora. All had lunch at a typical French Restaurant near Jacques Cartier Square with time to enjoy the outdoor displays of the local artists around the square. That afternoon they had the opportunity to enjoy the excellent shopping facilities near the hotel. Promptly at 6 p.m., a short ride to Ile Ste Helen and the Old Fort to "Festin du Gouverneur" was in store for the group; also, a feast and entertainment in the Old French manner of 1691 was included in the activities.

October 10, all enjoyed the three-hour drive to Quebec City. Their agenda

included the sightseeing of Quebec, known as the historic walled and fortressed city. The narrow cobblestone streets, the monuments and waterfront terraces, the sidewalk cafes, the artists' corners, and its vibrant people were a treat for all. Following the earlier tour, at 6 p.m. a beautiful evening drive to the Laurentian Mountains and a dinner at a charming lakeside lodge called Manoir St. Castin, was truly a pleasure for the group.

October 11 was the last day of their Canadian tour; that morning they were given leisure time to again explore the French Canadian City which was indeed something to see. Later that evening, their flight brought them safely home to Texas where their trip to Canada will always be an affair to be remembered.

SVOBODA REUNION HELD

Special entertainment was provided by W.J. Matous, Sr., of Seaton who played old favorite Czech music on his accordion. He reminisced that he had learned to play as a child over 70 years ago when he would slip his older brother's accordion out and play with it.

The next reunion will be held Saturday, October 3, 1981 at the Seaton Community Center. Committee members for 1981 are: Johnnie and Doris Svoboda, Wayne and Debbie Svajda, and Andy and Dianne Herzog.

The fourth annual reunion of the decendants of Vaclav and Barbara Poboril Svoboda was held recently at the Seaton Community Center, Seaton, Texas with over 100 family members in attendance. This year's committee of Johnnie and Doris Svoboda, Bill and Joyce Matous, and Wayne and Debbie Svajda conducted a brief business meeting following the noon meal.

Several top Texas officials, legislators and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland were to tour the demonstration "on-the-farm" alcohol fuel plant in Rockdale, State Rep. Dan Kubiak announced.

Kubiak, a gasohol advocate, was to lead the officials and other interested persons in an open house inspection beginning 10 a.m., Oct. 13.

The plant is located on the farm of A.R. 1 Garza, some two miles west of Rockdale.

It was built with private funds following Governor Clements' veto of a state alcohol fuels demonstration plant for Texas A and M University.

"When I asked the Legislature to vote for my gasohol bills, I promised the members that Texas would have at least one operating plant before the next session. This is my way of saying thank you for supporting alcohol fuel production in Texas."

The project designers, which include former Green Bay Packer linebacker Lee Roy Caffey, want to demonstrate that small-scale alcohol fuel production is both practical and economical.

Using grain sorghum as a feedstock, the plant can produce up to 50 gallons an hour of 190-proof ethanol for less than $1.05 per gallon.

Wednesday, October 15, 1980 The alcohol fuel product can be burned "straight" in farm equipment or automobiles, thus providing farmers with a "home-grown motor fuel".

If the home-grown fuel is refined an extra step to remove the small amount of water, it can be blended in gasohol for urban consumers.

Kubiak will tell Bergland these small plants can play a vital role in emergency mass production of alcohol fuel for the United States.

"The industrial-size plants take over two years to build, but the on-farm units can be producing in less than four months. If America builds enough of these, we can have a ready source of renewable motor fuel in a hurry," Kubiak said.

"These plants will also build a strong, stable agricultural economy and that is one point we want to stress to Secretary Bergland."

Then we had the roll call and the treasurer's report, followed by old and new business. We also had our program in which many people read poems.

Contest and door prize winners were then announced. Afterwards, we played games.

He married Frances Zubik in 1916; she died in 1966.

Survivors include a son, John E. Popp of West; two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Garner and Mrs. Fran Weatherholt, both of Arlington; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Barton and Mrs. Hermina Marek, both of Abbott; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karnes No. 93, Hobson, Texas, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother EDWARD ONDREJ, of San Antonio, Texas, who died at his home 4 Sept. 1980 after a lengthy illness.

He was 61 years, 11 months, and 13 days of age.

Brother Ondrej was born at Hobson, Texas, 21 Sept. 1918 to Edward J. and Emelia Hons Ondrej. He obtained his elementary schooling at Arnold School and then entered Karnes City High School from where he graduated with scholastic honors, and acclaim as a football player; after graduation he played amateur baseball until he joined the U.S. Air Force in early 1940. He served until 1946 being stationed at various bases in the United States and overseas.

After receiving his honorable discharge from the Air Force he accepted employment with Braniff Air Lines and was married to Miss Isabella Kolodziejczyk 25 August 1947 in St. Boniface Catholic Church, Hobson, Texas. Later he was employed by Longhorn Aircraft and then established his own business under the name Seguin Aviation fourteen years ago. He was president and general manager of this firm until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Isabella Ondrej; daughters, Helen and Kathryn Ondrej, all of San Antonio, Tx.; Mrs. Carol Paris and Miss Evelyn Ondrej of Houston, Tx., Miss Elizabeth Ondrej of Seattle, Wa. and Miss Loraine Ondrej of Austin, Tx. ; sons, Edward M. Ondrej of

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karnes No. 93, Hobson, Texas in behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister ANN ABERNATHY of Karnes City, Texas, who died at her home 28 August 1980. She was 57 years, 1 month, and 24 days of age.

Sister Abernathy was born 24 July 1923 to Jacob and Anna Linhart Shortner near Karnes City, Texas. She attended schools at New Bremen and Karnes City, and lived her entire life in Karnes County. At an early age she became a member of SPJST and served for some time as secretary of Lodge Pokrok No. 127, Kenedy, Texas. She was also a member of St. Cornelius Catholic Church, Rosary Circle of Karnes City, and VFW Auxiliary of Kenedy.

In December 1940 she was married to Marvin Marcak who died in 1968, and in 1969 she was married to James Abernathy who died in 1970.

She is survived by a brother, August Shortner of Karnes City; sisters, Mrs. Jerry (Elige) Brosh, Mrs. Oscar (Bessie) Becker, Mrs. Pat (Lillie) Schramek, all of Victoria, and Mrs. Viola Stevens of Brady.

Requiem mass was said in St. Cornelius Catholic Church by Rev. Lambert Bily with interment in Kenedy City Cemetery.

ITEMS OF INTEREST CZECHOSLOVAK OIL PROCESSING EQUIPMENT FOR ARAB COUNTRIES In 1892-1893, the Kralovopolska strojirna engineering works in Brno produced equipment for an oil refinery in Orsova, Rumania. One year later, another refinery was delivered to Bosenski Sad, Yugoslavia. The first complete oil refinery produced on Czech territory was delivered overseas in 1913, to the Sun Company Philadelphia in the United States.

The production and exports of oil processing equipment have a tradition of nearly one hundred years in Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia exported complete oil refineries and separate apparatuses until the beginning of the Second World War and the country's occupation by Nazi Germany in 1939-1945. After the war, the Kralovopolska strojirna engineering works reconstructed Czechoslovak refineries destroyed during the war, supplied equipment for Slovnaft in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia's largest refinery, which today processes nine

A distillation column for a refinery, delivered by Czechoslovakia to Syria, is being completed at the chemical plant of the Victorious February Works in-Hradec Kralove. million tons of crude oil per year, and by deliveries of complete technological lines for processing crude oil and crude oil distillates it participated in the construction of modern oil refineries in a number of socialist countries.

The 011 Refinery in Horns, Syria, The history of Czechoslovak deliveries of oil processing equipment to Arab countries dates back to 1957, when the Syrian Government invited tenders for the delivery of an oil refinery with an annual capacity of one-million tons of processed crude oil. The competition of tenders, in which a number of important world firms with a long-standing tradition in supplying this equipment took part, was won by Czechoslovakia's Technoexport Prague, which had been unknown in the Arab countries before.

A role in winning the competition was played by the fact that Technoexport offered a complete delivery on a turnkey basis and that the delivery was not subject to compliance with other economic or political conditions.

The Homs I oil refinery has processed one million tons of imported crude oil per year since 1959. Its construction and operation has become the best recommendation for the Czechoslovak supplier. In 1968, Czechoslovakia gained, against tough competition, a

comtract for the delivery of a new unit, Horns II, this time intended for processing domestic crude oil from the Karatschouk region. The high sulphur content in this crude oil required also the demanding development of a new processing technology.

At the time when preparations were made for signing a contract for the delivery of the third Czechoslovak refinery with an annual capacity of 1.7 million tons of processed crude oil, the Horns refinery was destroyed by an Israeli air raid in October 1973. At the same time, as the debris was being removed, Czechoslovak experts were ascertaining the extent of damage and working out a project for the renovation of the destroyed facilities. In June 1974, a contract was signed for the construction of a new unit and simultaneous reconstruction of the destroyed facilities. In February 1976, the reconstructed part of the refinery as well as a new unit, Horns III, were put into operation. At present, the oil refinery in Horns, delivered by Czechoslovakia, has an Annual capacity of nearly six million tons of crude oil. In the second half of 1979, a new vacuum unit, delivered by Czechoslovakia, with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons of asphalt, will be also put into operation.

In this way, Czechoslovakia takes an important part in the industrialization of Syria's national economy.

The Largest Refinery Exported by Czechoslovakia In 1974, an oil refinery was put into operation in Basra, /Basra I/, Iraq, with an annual capacity of 3.1 million tons of processed crude oil. This refinery, built

by Czechoslovak firms on a turnkey basis, is one of the largest and most sophisticated plants exported by Czechoslovakia to date. In addition to the basic production units, its expensive complex includes, also, large facilities for storing crude oil and the processed products, a dispatching department and auxiliary facilities, such as a large laboratory, a health center, a works canteen, etc. Simultaneously with the construction of the refinery, an all-inclusive housing estate was built for the refinery employees in its immediate neighborhood, including a club and a swimming-pool. The extent and the demanding character of the construction is documented by several data: in Czechoslovakia and some other countries it was necessary to insure the production and transport of more than 100,000 tons of material and equipment, those working at the building site included about 1,200 Czechoslovak experts and specialists and, under their guidance, over 5,000 local workers, and more than 3,000 workers from the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Britain, Belgium, France and Austria. The construction of the refinery offered ample job opportunities to Iraq workers, many of whom acquired qualification directly in Czechoslovak enterprises.

The most eloquent evidence of the quality of the completed project is the fact that shortly after the Basra I refinery was put into full operation, a contract was signed in February 1976 for the construction of the Basra II refinery of the same capacity. The third oil refinery for Iraq will be delivered by Czechoslovakia to the Baiji region under a contract signed in November 1978.

The modern complex, which will have an annual capacity of over three million tons of crude oil, will be delivered in a record time of 29 months. We May Grow Energy in SemiArid West Texas

In 1970, the Alexandria Petroleum Company took over for trial operation another atmospheric distillation plant, again with an annual capacity of one million tons. The distillation plant built in Alexandria has become an important contribution to the promotion of the Egyptian national economy, especially after the Suez refinery was put out of operation during the 1967 war. Another atmospheric distillation plant, with a capacity of 1.6 million tons of heavy oil, for processing crude oil from the Alamain and Razzak oilfields was bought in Czechoslovakia by the Nasr Petroleum Company together with a vacuum distillation plant having an annual capacity of 750,000 tons of crude

oil. Three units for the hydrogenation refining of lubricant oils, kerosene and heating gas were produced for Egypt under the 1973 contract signed by Czechoslovakia's Technoexport Foreign Trade Corporation and the General Organization for Industrialization, Cairo.

In the future, millions of acres in West Texas may be devoted to growing hardy plants suited to energy production.

The 2900 species of plants growing in West Texas were screened by scientists at Texas A&M University and 12 selected for further study as possible biomass sources of energy.

West Texas was defined as that half of the State that was west of the 24-inch-annualrainfall line. If you imagine a straight line drawn from Brownsville to the eastern edge of the Panhandle, you'll have in mind the area they're considering.

Rainfall average decreases, as you go west, from 24 inches to about 8 inches, in parts of the region east of El Paso. A good part of that 100 million acres is capable of supporting native or introduced vegetation suited to energy production, scientists say.

The 12 plant species were evaluated for yield, energy content, forage value, adaptability to various regions and energy costs by scientists with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station.

Average cost of unit of energy produced of the 12 candidate plants was somewhat higher than coal but somewhat lower than fuel oil.

However, production costs did not consider irrigation.

It has been suggested that irrigation may be needed in drouth years or during seedling establishment.

A minimal application of water greatly increased productivity of Kochia, Russian thistle, and sunflowers.

"It is expected that production costs for annuals and grasses could be cut," said Dr. Ron Newton, Experiment Station plant physiologist,

"by using more efficient equipment and cultural methods.

"This is especially true for harvesting and transporting costs; there were few efficiencies built into the production procedures used in the analysis," Newton added.

"Efficiencies can also be improved by increasing productivity of some of the candidate species by plant improvement methods such as selection and hybridization," said Dr. Marshall Haferkamp, Experiment Station range scientist.

creased production efficiencies and suggested plant improvements would undoubtedly enable mesquite to compare more favorably as a biomass candidate.

Equipment for mesquite harvest has not yet been adapted to cut costs and energy use. It appears that the best method for using mesquite would be to shear existing stands on about 60 million acres.

Contracts could be made with landowners to harvest such standing woody plants on rangeland. Forage production would be encouraged but since most of these woody plant species, including mesquite, resprout readily, a new harvest could be made every 3 to 5 years.

Candelilla may be more valuable as a source of high-grade wax than for biomass, Newton says. An alternative use would be to extract the wax and use the residue as a biomass fuel source.

This could be done on a large scale for several other plants of the region. For example, the residues of Guayule, a source of natural rubber and of Creosote Bush, a source of a commercial anti-oxidant, could be used for biomass energy production, after extraction of their more valuable products.

Sunflowers are grown in Texas at present as an oilseed crop. With present harvesting methods, it isn't possible to get a head and biomass crop from the same stand. The

22 Čtyřicátý československý Den v Dallas, Texas. Čtyřicátý Čsl. den se konal v neděli 5. října v Band Shell na výstavišti ve Fair Parku za velké účasti naších krajanů odevšad. Počasí bylo ideální, nebylo horko a slabší větříček od severu pofukoval, takže to bylo příjemné.

Letošní výstava otevřela svoji výroční sezonu hned v sobotu a to již po devadesáté páté--celých 95 let--a to již je jsitě dlouhá doba a říkají, že naše výstava jest prý největší na celém světě, a snad jest to pravda.

Krajanský program na tom našem dni začal hned ráno v 9 hodin v přízemí budovy Hall of State kdy biskup Jan Mořkovský z houstonské-galvestonské diocése sloužil českou mši za asistence Rev. Tomáše Tschoepe a lektorem byl předseda Katolické Jednoty Texaské p.

Amos Pavlik. Také pěvecké sbory z Dallas a Abbott krásně zpívali české písně. Program pak v Band Shell započal 10:30 a p. B.A. Zvolánek přivítal přítomné a mladá sl. Debbie Bečanová (vnučka manželů Jerry Houpých) pěkně zazpívala národní hymny a dallaská koncertní kapela zahrála pěkné skladby.

Obřádníkem byl p. Stan Paták a po několika proslovech program pokračoval kdy p. John Menšík z Ennis předvedl taneční skupinu ze Školy sv. Iana a mezi tím kapela zahrála zase pěkný kousek a pak taneční skupina p. Menšíka (tentokráte menší děti) zatančily tanečky. Pak pěvecký sbor ze Seaton, 'Tx. zapěli české písně, a kapela mezi ·· každým číslem zahrála pěkný kus pro poslech. Na to byla zatančená česká · Beseda různými spolky dohromady. Vše · se líbilo a ve 12 hodin tento program byl ukončen a každý mohl si obstarat dobré jídlo a obcěrstvení, Mezi tím pak začal jiný program od 12. · do 6 hodin večer v Band Shell kdy · obřadníkem byl p. Calvin Chervenka · který oznamoval jednotlivé čísla. Zase · kapela zahrála a pak pánové Johnny Hubáček a Ondřej Potýška zabrali na harmoniku a oba umí výborňe hrát. Na · to sokolově předvedli cvičení a na to · Českoslovenští tanečnici z .West, Tx., zatančili nějaké nové tance pod vedením pi. Maggie Grmelové. Za nimi pěvecký sbor ze Seaton pod vedením pí. Annie Jakubcové zazpívali. Všechno toto bylo přijato: pěkně našimi přítomnymi. krajany. Pak před. Zvolánek oznámil, že budou obdarovaní nejstarší paní a nejstarší pán českého původu na Čsl. dni a výsledek byl, že pí. Mary Peklo z Hillsboro, Tx., 86 letá ap. G. Skoták z Dallas 81. letý byli uznaní co nejstarší a ~"~ (!l:,£1"~"!! ~ln:,P nohatv a věnováním.

Vf:STN'i:S: Nejstarší ženatá dvojice připadla na manželé Jerry Houpých, kteří jsou spolu již 56 let a ti obdrželi pěknou plaketu na památku. Také pan Jan Slovák prý chodí již 61 let na výstavu bez vynechání jedné výstavy, což je jistě rekord a gratulujeme všem k poctě.

Pak nasledoval p. Mike Linda který hrál na kytáru a zpíval při tom velice pěkně. Průvod byl původních národních krojů které vysvětlovala pí. Helen Oates a bylo jich dosti hodně a pěkně se vyjímaly ty krásné kroje. Pak nasledovali zpěváci kteří se nazývají The Czech Relations, což znamená, že jsou to členové několik zpřízněných rodin ja.ko: Hajdovi, Dobiášovi, Dykowski a Hyžákovi pod vedením pí. Irene Vrabelové. Pak ti co brali kurs češtiny v letě na síni K.I. T. (a bylo jich hodně) tak zazpívali prý velmi pěkně české písě.

Pak 6 pánů: Hubáček, Petter, Potýška, Pavliček, Repka, Sýkora měli kontest čili soutěž který z nich jest nejlepší hrác a Hubáček, Sýkora a Potýška byli uznaní co nejlepší na harmoniku ale vsichni obdrželi velký potlesk neb hráli pěkně.

Po té kapela p. Raymonda Dlabaje z Ennis pod jménem Country Boys Polka Band Ennis hráli až do ukončení programu do 6 hodin večer.

Mezi tím co byl program v Band Shell tak se konal jiný zase ve Women's Building čili v Ženské budově v jiné části výstavišti. V půl dvanácté děti z Abbott, Tx., zatančili "Májový" tanec také hezky a p. Mike Linda zahrál a zazpíval s kytarou, a umí to dobře. K jedné hodiňe byl průvod národních krojů pod vedením pí. Helen Oates, a že tam bývá vždy hodně jinonárodovců tak se vždy těší velké oblibě. Na to zpěváci Czech Relations zazpívali pod vedením pi.

Irene Vrabelové a Texaští tanečníci zatančili Besedu a program byl v půl druhé dokončen.

Na Marine Field od dvou do třech hodin zase sokolové z Dallas, Ennis, Ft. Worth a West pod vedením p, Larry Lažnovského provedli všelijaké cviky společňe. Od třech do čtyřech hodin pak zase byl jiný program na jevišti před figurou obrovského západáka jménem "Big Tex" a obřadníkem byl Arnold Vrla. Tam take Českoslovenští tanečníci zatančili Besedu pod vedením pí. Maggie Grmelové a po nich zase tanečníci spolku SPJST z Cottonwood řádu pod vedením Willie Mae Schuetzové předvedli své umění. Sokolové z Ft. Worth sokolovali a na konec ještě jedna taneční skupina ze středního Texasu také zatančila pod vedením pi. Helen Lenartové. Jak vidíte, tedy hudby, tance a zpěvu bylo dost a každý si mohl vybrat co se mu Iíbilo. Vše se též vydařilo i peněžitě neboť jídla a

studených nápojů se prodalo hodně.

Ještě musím sdělit, že na naší oslavě byli přítomní i krajané odjinud prý až ze Sev. Dakoty a až ze staré vlasti. Neterě p.

Viléma Červenky z West, Tx přijely až z Kašavy na Moravě a byly prědstaveny p.

Chervenkou a ony zazpívaly dvě pěkné písně velmi hezky a obdržely potlesk.

Také jsem slyšela, že p. Sid Pokladník prý obdržel plaketu jako dar od členů své kapely za tolik let vedení orchestru a věnování se členům. Bylo mě sděleno, že p.Pokladník dal zahráti jedno pěkné číslo na počest p. Franka Henzena, který dlouhá léta byl členem kapely a pak pěvecký spolek od síňe KJT a KJŽT mu zazpívali tři pěkné písně, když p. Henzen nedávno přišel z nemocnice, aby ho to potěšilo, že na něj vzpomínají. Každý mu přeje vše dobré!

Tak tedy náš velký svátek se podařil a doufejme, že narok aby byl ještě lepší.

Všichni co věnovali svůj čas a práci aby Čsl. den dobře dopadl, si zaslouží uznání co vše vykonali abychom si uchovali českou řeč a tradice naších rodičů a prarodičů ještě na dlouho. Kéž se to splnil S pozdravem všem krajanům dobré vůle Anežka Houdková.

Předseda našeho řádu Jerry Pechal zahájil schůzi za dosti malé účasti členů.

Povstáním jsme vzdali čest naší vlajce.

Nosiči vlajek byli bratři David Pechal a Gene Skrabanek. Návštěvu jsme měli: Marylou Skrabanek, Ann Balusek, Emma Yakesch a Leola Kruse; přijďte zase.

Tajemnice Ginger Klusáčková přeeětla zápis z minulé schůze a tyto bylý přijaty tak, jak čtený; také přečetla děkovnou kartu od bratra Jerry Chupíka.

Nové členy jsme přijali: David Wayne Vansa, Stacy Lannette Killion, Lee John Bartek, Jr., Archie Lee Abrahamson; vyplacenou pojistku má bratr Walter Haisler, Jr. Vítáme Vás do řádu.

Nemocné členy jsme měli bra. Jerry Chupik, Tom Merka a sestra Rosemary Orsak. Doufáme, že se brzy uzdravíte.

Pak byly podany zprávy úředníků i výborů, které byly velmi dobré. Za Dozorci výbor podala zprávu sestra Lillian Kosárková.

Náš Vánoční stromeček budeme mít 14. prosince. Mládež bude mít program ve 4 hodiny, od S hodin do 6 hodin bude veselá hodinka a naposled v 6 hodin bude večeře.

Kdyi jsme pfiletely do New Yorku, jii tam na nas Cekala naie sestfenka se svYte muiem, ktera tam bydli. Neznaly jsme se osobne, jenom z fotografii, pfesto naie setkani bylo krasne a dojemne. V New Yorku jsme byly dva dny, povozili nas po meste, ukezali zajimava mista, za co jim velice dekujeme. Pak s nami Evelynka Cervenkova zajela do Dallasu za ostatni rodinou do Waca. Na leti gti v Dallasu nas cela rodina, pet sestfenic a dva bratranci s rodinami oeekavali s kyticemi Pro me a moji sestfenku Vlastu to

23 bylo tak krasne a dojemne, ie jsem v prvni chvili nemohly ani mluvit, jenom jsme plakaly. Nikdy na to setkani nezapomeneme. Nage rodina je velka a kdidY nas jen vozi, hosti a u kaideho musime spat a besedovat. Vgechno zajimave a pekne nam ukazuji. Libi se nam tu, je tu krasne a v geho, na co si elovek pomysli, je dost, tech vgelijakYch jidel a iatstva a kaidY tram chce kupovat to, co se nam libi.

My jsme z Kagavy, kdysi chudobneho Valagska na Morave, odkud mnoho lidi odjadelo do cizerty za vYdelkem. Od to doby se hodne zmenilo, prace je pro kaideho dost, ei to neni jako drive. Nage zem je krasne a ma zajimava mista.

Take jsme byly na Ceskem dnu v Dallasu, kde jsme byly uvitany panem Calvinem Cervenkou, kterY tento program fidil. Dekujeme mu a take jsme si zazpivaly dve narodni pisne, ktere se viem krajanum libily.

Snad nam to doma ani nikdo nebude vent, ie jsme se mely dobfe a co jsme viechno videly. Právě jsem se dověděla, ze v Ennis zemrěla pí. Joe J. (Mary) Lažová po delší nemoci v enniské Opatrovně. Narodila se co dcera Jan A. Anna (Lomica) Bobalíkových na Creechville. V 1921 se provdala za Joe J. Lažu a farmařili ve stejném okolí. Manžel zemřel v 1972 a ona pak bydlela s vnukem. Bylojí 77 let a myslím, že smrt jí byla vykoupením z útrpení. Zanechala dva synové Joe J. Laža z Ennis a Edward C. Laža z Richardson; dvě dcery pí. Evelyn Kosich z Dallas a· pí. Hattie Knowlton z Colorado · Springs, Colo.; jedenáct vnoučat a pět pravnoučat. Pohřeb měla minulý týdetÍ ve středu z Keeverovy kaple za asistence Rev. Gordon Hejla z kostela

Moravských Bratří a uložená na Myrtle hřbitov. 'Znali jsme pí. Lažovou mnoho let a opravdu litujeme, že odešla na věčnost. Přejeme ten klid, nechť odpočívá v pokoji a rodině vyslovujeme naší soustrast, neb více jí neuvidíme.

Ještě jedna smrt nás překvapila a sice mladého p. Geralda Lutz 38 letého z Austinu a pohřben byl v Piqua, Ohio kde bydli jeho rodiče. Jeho maminka jest bývalá Emilie Zázvorková, která před lety se narodila v Ennis a bydlela tam mnoho let a i učila ve vyšší škole enniské.

Myslím, že si každý bude pamatovat na jejího otce když vlastnil řeznický obchod, který pak prodal v 1950 p. Muirheadovi a v 1951 koupil top. Joe S. Liška a nyní to vlastní jeho syn Stanley Liška. Mladý Lutz zanechal rodiče manželé Rene Lutzovi a jednu sestru. Nechť odpočíva v pokoji a vyslovujeme pozůstalé rodině naší upřímnou soustrast.

Letos bazar v K.J. T. síni v Ennis se opravdu vydařil neboť stržili prý celkem 60 tisíc dolarů. Ovšem čistý výtěžek dosud mě není znám ale jistě bude též velký neboť měli velkou návštěvu ten den. Přejeme úspěch a jistě i napříště se vše vydaří neboť mají tam hodně dobrých pracovníků. Také měli hodně tahů na různé ceny a šťastných bylo dost.

Překvapila nás telefonická zpráva z Wellington, Kansas, že manžel naší přítelkyně vážně onemocněl a musel míti operaci v nemocnici ve Wichita, Kansas a nyní prý má přijít domů koncem týdne.

Manželé Earl a Rose Fuhsovi již několikrát přijeli na náš Polka festival do Ennis a mají dosti známých které to překvapí též. Přejemu p. Fuhsovi brzké uzdravení, aby mohli zas příštím rokem přijet k nám do Texasu.

Nedávno sl. Theresa Ann Bačáková ze Cedar Hill se provdala za p. Dale Gene Novýho v kostele sv. Jana v Ennis a oddával je Rev. L. Haberman. Nevěsta jest zaměstnaná v Republic National bance zde v Dallas a ženich jest zaměstnán u Texas Instruments, též v Dallas a novomanželé po svatební cestě do Puerto Vallarta, Mexiko budou bydlet v Garland, Tx. Pan Nový jest z Ennis.

Také nedávno sl. Judy Marie Patáková ap. Michael James Larson byli oddaní v kostele sv. Jana v Ennis rovněž Rev. Habermanem. Navěsta jest dcerou manželů Frank J. Patákových a ženich, který pochází z Midlothian, jest syn manželů Alton Larsonových. Nevěsta ošetřuje v W.C. Tenery nemocnici ve Waxahachie a ženich pracuje pro Texas Industries v Midlothian.

Oběma novomanželům gratulujeme a přejeme vše to nejlepší do dalších let.

V neděli večer měli opět pěkný program

na televizi o těch zvířatech a ptácích co vše dokáži a bylo to velmi zajímavé slyšet několik papoušků kteří zpívali úryvek z kterési opery, a jeden se smál když se mu řeklo, aby ukázal jak se umí smát. Také opičky jak radostně poznaly jednu dívku ač jí neviděli tři roky a smutně se s ní loučily. Také ukazovali hady a včely a co dokáži. Je to opravdu pěkné to sledovat.

Druhý pěkný program byl film ze života, a vím, že často se něco podobného stane v životě. Film se týkal jedné ženy, která před 16. lety jako svobodné děvče měla dítě (holčičku), kterou rodiče donutili aby ho dala pryč adoptovat.

Tedy co měla dělat? Dítě dala od sebe a celý čas o něm nevěděla až náhoda jí setkala s dítětem. Ona totiž onemocněla na vážnou nemoc (silnou chudokrevnost) a lékař jí rěkl, že jediná záchrana by byla, kdyby někdo z blízké přízně jí mohl dáti kostní morek transplantovat, ale musel by to být někdo kdo má samou krev a soustavu jako ona sama má. Tedy její přítel, který ji měl velmi rád, tak aniž by se ji ptal, šel vynajít kdo ono děvče adoptoval a podařilo se mu to a mluvil s pěstouny děvčete. Konečně po čase přiměl tu péstounku aby svolila poznat svou matku a podrobit se bolestné operaci a tak pomoci nemocné matce.

Ukazovali jak napřed děvče bylo nešťastné, že ti, co považovala za rodiče, jsou cizí a matce to vyčítala, že ji neměla ráda, když jí mohla dát pryč. Bylo to napjaté ale konečně se to vše urovnalo a dítě a matka se sblížily třebaže pěstouny měla rovněž ráda. Bylo to opravdové drama ze života a velmi dojemné. Takové programy jsou pěkné a poučné a může je vidět každý. Film se jmenoval "The Perfect Match".

Onehdy jsem mluvila s pí. Estelle Španielovou a ona mě }ekla ješt~ ně~o zajímavého. Ona s manzelem, kdyz byli v Čsl., tak jeli do kostela v Pozlovicich (poblíže Luhačovic) a velice se jim to líbilo neboť v tom kostele její rodiče Alois Holých byli oddaní před mnoha a mnoha lety. Bohošluzby byly pěkné a ten krásný zpěv českých písní je opravdu dojal a vzpomínka na to vše je bude celý život blažit. Hezké, že ano?

Kdyi tak prohliiim a etu ty nage noviny, tak bych se mohl domnivat, spolkova a spoleCenska Cinnost ochabla.

Ovg em ono se to lope ete nei pi ge. Bylo by velmi vitane, aby tajemnici vgech spolku podavali zpravy ze schilzi v novinach a eleni, co nejsou pfitomni na schuzi vedeli co se kde kona.

Pozvanka ku spoleenemu obedu V sobotu dopoledne dne 13. zari jsem mel telefonni besedu. Pani Annie Elznerova-Spencerova mne pozvala ku spoleenemu obedu v nedeli opoledni, abych byl pfitomen. V na g i rozmluve jsme se usnesli, ze v nedeli 14. zari budeme miti na stolech gstavku reiznjrch pamatek v sini SPJST a Sokol Corpus Christi, Texas.

V nedeli v 11 hodin zet' Roy pfijel, nalozili jsme 2 bedny do vozidla a jeli pfimo ku manielum William a Annie Spencerogm. Tarn jsme slozili moje 2 bedny po pfivitani se. Roy odjel k sini vypomoci tam, kde tfeba. In this lesso n, we will deal with some errors that are freqently made by Czechs in Texas.

KDE — KAM These 2 words are probably misused more than any other. We frequently hear, "Kde jde?" This is wrong. To indicate the physical action of going somewhere, the word RAM is used: Ham jde g? Kam jedee The word KDE indicates a stationary situation, and cannot be used to indicate physical action.

Ex.: Hde to je? Kde bydlite? Kde je nadraii?, etc. And using RAM, we say the following: Kam pojedete veeer? Ram piijdete po divadle?

Kam jste sli po zabave? etc. All you need to remember is whether you are indicating action or not.

SEM — JSEM We call words like these homonyms; they sound the same but have entirely different meanings.

In English, some homonyms are: there, their, they're, bear, bare; and close, clothes.

SEM means "here" or 'to here", with ACTION. Ex.: Veera pkijeli sem. Fold' sem! Dojeli sem AVastne. All of these involved action in coming or getting here.

JSEM means simply I am, or used with certain verbs, denotes tense, or time something happened.

Ex.: Jsem ui starii elovek. Byl JSEM na vjrlete v hor4ich. Mil JSEM se dolike.

In speaking the above two words of SEM and JSEM, there is practically no recognizable difference: however, in writing it makes all the difference in the world. One means one thing, and the other means something else.

SPRAVA ZPRAVA Here are two tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have two entirely different meanings. It is therefore important that we know how to spell the one we wish to use.

SPRAVA — means administra-

tion, or SPRAVKA, which is to repair; or SPRAVITI, which means to fix or to repair.

Ex.: Statni spriva je umistena v Austinu.
