FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, September 28th we attended the District III Fall meeting at Lodge No. 154 and Eagle Mountain Athletic Center in Ft. Worth. The district was fairly well represented and, due to the bad, rainy weather, many members stayed away. The meeting programed very briskly and ended early in the afternoon. As usual, Lodge No. 154 proved themselves to be very capable and gracious hosts. You will be reading the report of the meeting in the minutes of the secretary of District III in the near future. While at the meeting, your editor learned that the royalty chosen at Lodge No. 187, Round Rock at State Royalty Day were all from District HI. They are: Queen - Carol Skrabanek (130), Dallas; King - Eddie Banik (35), Elk; Duchess Laura Pottkotter (130), Dallas; and Duke - Jason Brown (35), Elk. Congratulations to them, the parents and district Ill! *** Friendship -- "No warmer heart nor stronger spirit can be found than those possessed by an active and faithful SPJST member." We see and recognize countless people who contribute so much of their time toward Friendship that is available at all time and under all conditions in our SPJST. It is a strong spirit that grows with each year and is a permanent influence upon our character, our comfort, our contentment and our happiness.
THE MAKING OF FRIENDS... Life is sweet because of the Friends we make, And the things that, in common, we share, And we want to live, not because of ourselves, But because of those who care. It is in giving and doing for somebody else, Upon these all life's pleasure depends, And the joy of the world, all summed up, Is found in the making of Friends. An SPJST member recognizes that respect and friendship should properly go hand-in-hand and when they do not thus remain together, it is bound to cause sorrow and suffering. The title of "friend" does not give anyone the right to openly criticize and condemn other people's actions, especially when all the facts are not known. Friendship in the SPJST is exemplified in many ways. It is required of us to address each other as brothers and sisters, which signifies a close relationship. What is more heartening to a new member, as well as to the members present, than to greet this member with, "How are you?" or "Jak se ma?" We feel certain that this reaction would be--I am wanted. When we meet a member, a hearty handshake is in order that is usually coupled with a friendly conversation.
Friendship is like the mortar in a brick joint. In the SPJST, we like to think and believe that it is a group of friends holding the organization together in a strong bond striving to achieve worthwhile objectives and overcoming obstacles in the process. It is a meeting of minds and hearts that has as its basis a mutual attraction, mutual self-respect and mutual respect for others. Surrounded by real friends, the pathway of life need never be lonely and becomes a source of happiness to us all. As a personal note, your editor has, through the years, found that the friendships he has found and made in SPJST, other fraternal societies and Sokol have meant much in life to this individual. No, I would not trade my life for the life of many lonely rich men! Do they take their riches with them? Think about this! *** Recently, on a television show, which was very newsworthy, there were some letters shown written by 17 year old high school seniors who could not tell the difference between there and their and spelled comfortible thus: comfuble. Something is wrong! We print the following article from Czechoslovakia. TEACHERS, TOO, ARE LEARNING Before teachers appear for the first time before their pupils and before they write their first mark, they pass
