Monday, September 22nd was the first day of Autumn and the second time in 1980 that the days and nights were equal in length; very likely, all of us will be glad to see this 'long, hot summer' come to an end; it certainly was devastating to many farmers and stockmen in our Central Texas area.

Your editor mentioned last week that he lived in the Eastgate area of Liberty County, Texas in the rural area. Having grown up on a farm where cotton, corn, maize, peanuts, etc. were planted and harvested, this writer can honestly state that, in this life time of his, he has never seen such devastation in the cotton and maize crops due to drought as was evident in this area on some farms. On two farms the cotton grew to be about 8 or 10 inches tall and had 2 or 3 cotton bolls on them about the size of a thumb on a person's hand. After defoliation of these fields, the owners decided it would be more economical to just shred and disc the field instead of trying to do some stripping of the lint. They will try again next year! ***

With Autumn comes the time for our fall district meetings and District III has theirs scheduled for Sunday, September 28 at Lodge No. 154, Ft. Worth with their program for the day. Of course, the day prior to that Sunday is Saturday, September 27th with State Royalty at Lodge No. 187, Round Rock.

Then comes Sonday, October 5th with Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas and District VI meeting in Moravia. We have tried to include as many of the programs! in our Vestnik as possible. Please check your Bulletin Board, the agendas and programs for your information.

Wednesday, September 24, 1980 This week, (week of September 14 through 19) is the last week that a fine young lady named Jacqueline (Jackie) Holecek is employed at the print shop next door; she is going to be married Saturday, September 27th and will move to the Lake Jackson area. Your editor and wife, Maxine, will miss her sincere faithfulness in working on the SPJST Vestnik. Good Luck, Jackie!

NEWSBRIEFS Ernest A. Hudec, 80, of Granger passed away Friday, September 12th, in a Taylor hospital after a long illness.

Funeral services were held at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Granger, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. Mr. Hudec was the father of Mrs. Henrietta (Matt) Vanek of Victoria, whose husband, Matt, is director of SPJST District VI. The SPJST was represented at the funeral

by SL President Morris, SecretaryTreasurer Mikeska, and Financial Secretary Mikulas.

*** Brother Emil W. Popp, 89, a resident of the West Rest Haven and formerly of Abbott, died Wednesday evening, September 17, at 5:45 p.m. Funeral services were held under the direction of Kotch Funeral Home of West, at 10 a.m.

Friday in West Brethren Church, with Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Interment followed in West Brethren Cemetery near West. Brother Popp was a recording secretary for Lodge No. 54 for many years and he was an esteemed community leader.

Reunions PAVLASEK-STOJANIK-POSPISIL SKRHAK REUNION A family reunion will be held Sunday, September 28, 1980, at the SPJST Hall, Holland, Texas. Registration will be at 10:00 a.m., with a $3 registration fee per family. There will be a short business meeting following the noon meal.

Any family members wishing to donate gifts for door prizes are welcomed to do so.

BY TOM BAYER A pyramid-type mass merchandising of deposit term life insurance in Texas by thousands of part-time agents has continued despite numerous complaints by professional agents who are losing whole-life insurance customers to the deposit-term sellers.

In a report to be released by the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan Dallas Monday, the Atlanta-based A.L. Williams Agency is said to have ordered changes in its sales presentation.

But apparently not all the firm's Dallas-area offices have eliminated the sales practices to which the BBB had objected strenuously.

In a previous bulletin, the local BBB had questioned Williams' "misleading use of 3rd-part (non-industry) sources, incomplete information being given out on the company's investment programs, and the company's contention that the market cannot be saturated by over recruiting agents."

The BBB also had objected to the disparagement of the insurance industry in general and of local insurance agents in particular.

Williams' representatives from Atlanta have contacted local BBB officials and have doggedly said they would implement new practices, the BBB said.

But after "shopping" Williams' local recruiting sessions, the BBB said not all of the company's offices are in compliance with the changes.

Salesmen for the Williams firm are merchandising a Massachusetts Indemnity Life Insurance Co. (Milico) deposit term policy, supposedly encouraging prospects to cash in their whole-life insurance and use the cash value for the deposit on the term.

That deposit turns out to provide a hefty commission for the salesman and

for others in the pyramid above him, a deposit that probably will not be returned if the coverage is dropped, the BBB said.

While the Williams sales organization is essentially a pyramid, with the emphasis being on recruitment of new sales people whose commissions are shared by those who recruit them and by others in management on up to Williams in Atlanta, the structure itself is not in violation of state statues.

Sources at the Texas Board of Insurance said the state attorney general has issued an informal opinion that this is not a violation of anti-pyramiding regulations, since there is no commission or money risked in advance.

W.O. Sanders, manager of the board's licensing division in Austin, said the board has been flooded with more than 6,000 applications from Milico agents this year from all over the state, far more than the board has ever received from one company.

Those agents (the company must certify that each agent has received 40 hours of training) receive a 90-day temporary license after which they must take the state's written examination or bow out of the insurance business.

Sanders said it is still too early to tell how many of Milico's temporary agents will take the test, but 70 percent in a full fiscal year must do so for the company to continue operating in the state. It will be another seven or eight months before the board has sufficient statistics to determine the company's compliance with state regulations.

In the meantime, more than 2,500 Milico agents in Dallas at Williams, Tuttle & Associates; Lawrence Pitts & Associates; Williams, Campbell & Associates; and Fee Income Development Co. have continued selling Milico's deposit term life insurance.

BBB spokesmen said, however, Williams has agreed to discontinue all of its help-wanted advertising in Texas for the next 60 to 90 days while the new program is being developed and implemented.

But BBB spokesmen are asking how the company's existing agents already recruited on the pyramid basis can realize the commissions promised them if the changes are made and if recruitment advertising stops.

Also, agents who either terminate after 90 days or who fail the examination and have to drop out lose future commissions to the underwriting company (Milico).

The BBB report added that in Mississippi, Milico has been fined for

violating state laws covering licenses and commissions for agents, a situation in which A.L. Williams is said to have a relationship.

And in Alabama, the state department of insurance issued a moratorium on sale of the type of policy sold by A.L. Williams, citing complaints on misrepresentation. But several insurance companies (includingFireman's Fund) obtained an injunction against the moratorium, with a hearing set Oct. 2.

In Texas, the Dallas consumer protection division of the attorney general's office has brought the Williams practices to the attention of the state board of insurance.

But the board has not asked the attorney general to take any action) partially because the regulation on licenses calls for the board to observe the licensing practices of the company for a fiscal year.

Spokesmen for the state board confirm the board is receiving complaints from competing agents who are losing business to Milico's.

Dear Members: District VI 'Miss SPJST' Annie Our lodge held its annual Family Day Zabransky was recognized and told the Sunday, September 7, 1980 at the members of her experiences at the State American Legion Hall in Hallettsville. Convention that was held in June.

The day began with a delicious meal President Zabransky read a list of the consisting of sausage, potatoes, pinto 50-year and over lodge members. Dear Members: The first meeting at our SPJST Hall was held Sunday, September 14th. We were very pleased with the attendance.

We also had two guests and eight visitors present.

President B.J. Hlavaty called the meeting to order and Nancy Hlavaty led us in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Vice-President Sill was absent from the, roll call of officers.

Minutes from the last meeting were read by Secretary Patricia Sill. Reports were given by Treasurer Inez Greenlees and Financial Secretary Daniel Roznovsky. All were accepted as read.

President Hlavaty acknowledged the guests and visitors and extended a warm welcome to all those present.

On behalf of all the members, President Hlavaty expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation to Robert and Patricia Sill for obtaining the Clubhouse at the Arlington Downs Townhouse for our monthly meetings.

We had been meeting at that location for over a year without charge. We are indeed grateful to Robert and Patricia for their concern.

Business discussed pertained to tables and chairs, equipment and furnishings needed for our hall.

Proposals were made and voted on. A thirty-cup perculator was donated, also an electric stove and a refrigerator offered to the lodge. It was really overwhelming at the enthusiasm that prevailed at this meeting.

Since there was no new business for discussion, the president adjourned the meeting and refreshments were served.

The youth club had a nice attendance at their picnic and all the youth members seemed to enjoy the day.

Members, now that we have a place of our own we hope more of you will become involved. We need your talents, muscles and ideas; after all it's your lodge, too!

Tables and chairs and all the other equipment should be in place and ready for use by the middle of October. We hope to have a "gala" opening the latter part of October.

Our next monthly meeting will be held Sunday, October 12, at 2 p.m. at the lodge hall located in Arlington at 1220-D West Arkansas Lane. Phone President Hlavaty for information at 261-0409.

LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our September 14 meeting resulted in a small attendance, presumably due to football fever and previous commitments of our members. Neverthe-less, from the standpoint of roll call, Vice President Ted Kocian was the only officer absent.

Due to the death of Sister Mary Marek August 21st, the attending members observed a moment of silent tribute in her memory. An expression of sympathy was sent to the family. We extend our deepest sympathy to the loved ones, and, to her, we wish eternal rest.

The previous quarterly meeting minutes, read by the secretary, stood approved as read.

An acknowledgement was received from Sokol West thanking Lodge No. 54 for the $100 donation to its local unit, which was appreciated by its Sokol members.

Belated congratulations, at this time, are extended to Brother Freddie and Sister Janice Kaluza on their addition: a baby boy, born August 5th. It was also announced that Sister Caralou Young, a member of Lodge No. 54, is recuperating at home from surgery; on behalf of the entire membership, we wish her a speedy recovery.

Other lodge business reports were presented and accepted. In addition, Brother Zahirniak, Sister Sefcik and Brother Wright spoke briefly on main issues which transpired at the recent SPJST Convention. It was indeed a good experience for all who represented the lodges and carefully weighed the essential topics for consideration.

For the past quarter of this year, our local lodge sales representatives produced approximately $185,000 worth of insurance sales to the following applicant candidates: Nickolas Aaron Deiterman, Gregory E. Hutyra, Daniel Raymond Mynar, George M. Mynar, Jo Anna Pareya, Whitney Eran Scott, Kelley S. Holecek, Brandon Todd Kaluza, Macon Perry Mazanec, Alvin Edward Mynar, and Darryl D. Barton; also an additional policy was issued to James J. Pavlicek, Jr. A motion was made and seconded to accept all the new members into our lodge. Motion carried. On behalf of Lodge No. 54, we wish to commend sales representatives Joe Dujka, Edmund Marek, John Mynar, Erwin Pustejovsky and Bob Wright for securing the large amount of insurance sales.

Proceeding with the meeting, it was reported that the lodge facilities are

booked heavily for the next few months, and an ice-maker was purchased from a local business associate. Additional information revealed that Lodge No. 54 will be used for Sokol West Gymnastic Association initiation of the charter members of Sokol West Sunday, November 23, 1980. Brother Zahirniak then called on Brother Rudy Sefcik, president of the Sokol West unit, to bring us up-to-date on the occasion. He announced that an old-fashioned Czech-style dinner with Czech pastries will be served for all who attend, including National Sokol officials from Chicago, and Southern District Sokol units in Texas. Brother Sefcik also thanked Sister Mona Zahirniak for all the help she donated with the Sokol float in the Westfest Parade that Dr. Smith furnished and operated.

We enjoyed seeing Brother Eddie Mikeska of Abbott at the meeting; he is our latest 50-year SPJST membership recipient, and looks well after his heart surgery. r- Maxine Sefcik won the door prize.

The meeting adjourned at 3:50 p.m.

December 14 was the date designated for the annual meeting, when the election of officers and a dinner also Christmas party (with Santa) will take place, beginning at 2 p.m. Members, please make notice of this annual event and endeavor to attend and bring your youngsters to see Santa Claus.

NO. 107, FLORESVILLE

President Bayer called the meeting to order when Lodge No. 107 held their regular meeting September 7, 1980, at 5 p. m.

Stephanie Burleson led the members in the pledge to the flag.

Reports were given by the secretary and treasurer. Financial Secretary Phyllis Purchis was absent, also was Rex Purchis, our vice president.

Phyllis is on the sick list. She underwent surgery Tuesday, September 9 at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. The entire membership wishes her a speedy recovery.

Wanda Louise Deagen converted her JT Policy and is now a member of the adult club.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer reported on their meeting. The Peanut Shelling contest is organized and the youth club is to help bag peanuts and also help with the making of peanut brittle.

Volunteers are needed to help with all these projects. Polly was proud to announce that Donna Cordes, James Dzuik and Annette Dzuik were winners at State YAD. She also stated that Lodge No. 107 Youth Club was third in State. She also reported the bus had been rented.

The committee to purchase a new beer cooler reported; some action is to be taken within two weeks.

The subject of the overhead fans was brought up but no action taken.

The lodge will have the beer stand at the Peanut Festival. Our hours are from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again at the dance at night. Many volunteers are needed because this is a big undertaking and much work is involved, but it is our big money-maker for the year and has proved to be worth the effort.

Elizabeth Bielefeld was the winner of the door prize.

Our next meeting will be held October 5, 1980, at 5 p.m.

Refreshments were served to all present and a social hour was enjoyed.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH, TEXAS Dear Members and Friends; As in a popular song of the Thirties, "The Leaves of brown come tumbling down remember", in September, so they are now; leaf raking time has begun! That also means that before you can say "seventy-seven more shopping days", Thanksgiving and Christmas will be upon us. Realizing this our youth club is already making plans for the Annual Tree and program which, this year, will include an enacting of the Christmas story. Corinna Tesar, one of our YC members, led the pledge of allegiance to open our lodge meeting Sunday, September 14. Attendance was good despite the fact that a Cowboy game was being televised at the same time. All officers were present; encouraging reports were given and approved. During the new business discussion we learned that the city of Sansom Park water well is being drilled on land adjoining our lodge property purchased from us recently and we voted to allow them to buy additional footage to build a water storage tank.

We were told of several members being ill, namely, Annie Mae George, Dixie Pavlisek recovering from surgery, Vlasta Dolkos .;.∎ perating at Meadow-

Wednesday, September 24, 1980 brook Nursing Home, and Reuben Lesikar overcoming a heart attack; also Tommy Walker spent some days in Osteopathic Hospital and Fred Karlichek sustained an injury that required stitches in his scalp. Hope all are doing fine by now.

Sympathy is extended to Tolivery Hausey whose mother died in August and to Frank Spacek who lost his mother also. She lived in Bellville and was the mother-in-law of our FinancialSecretary Evelyn Spacek. The Spaceks were cheered up some, however, because daughter Sue, her husband Don and little Jeremy came from Hobbs, New Mexico fora visit and then on to Las Vegas while Jeremy stayed with the grandparents. Other Las Vegas vacationers were Mary Hubenak and son Raymond. We heard that Mary had a sore arm but really didn't care as she came home a winner.

A little more about the YC Leader Gordon Hubenak gave a very good report and his enthusiasm commands an equal amount of support from the parents of our lodge children. During our next adult meeting the YC will go bowling and a skating party is in the offing. Invitation cards will be mailed and if your child fails to get one, contact Gordon or his wife.

Oct. 25 the Bill Kucera band will play for the popular annual harvest dance sponsored by St. George Church.

Ladies' Circle meeting is October 9 and regular lodge meeting is on October 12.

Plan to participate in the lodge activities and in the planning of them; you'll enjoy it.

9 For new business: Chartering a Greyhound bus to State Royalty at Lodge No. 187, Round Rock was briefly discussed. It was decided the adult and youth club will jointly charter a Greyhound bus to the Lodge No. 187 Round Rock for the State Royalty competition, judging and colorful events to follow, September 27th. The bus will leave Warrenton Store Saturday, September 27, at 1:30 p.m. and will return the same night. Make your reservation with our committee consisting of Sister Doris Eckermann and Sister Jeanette Schoenst no later than September 21st. If desiring a seat after that date, see a committee member if someone has cancelled their reservation. From this area we have Jeanne Eckermann as queen and Staci Schoenst as duchess in State competition.

The Food Committee reported the lodge will furnish chicken stew at our next regular meeting October 9, at 8 p.m.; youth at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Members and Guests: The regular meeting of Lodge No. 179 was held Thursday night, September 11th in Warrenton Store Guest Room with a nice attendance of members and guests.

President Harold Bergmann called the meeting to order and also led the group in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Secretary Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Brother Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both readings were accepted as given.

Dorothy Oltmann gave the mortuary standing.

LODGE NO. 81, NEEDVILLE Our regular monthly meeting September 9 was called to order by President Charlie Matcek promptly at 7:30 p.m.

The pledge of allegiance to our flag was led by Sister Benita Walzel, and all remained standing for a moment of silence as a tribute to our deceased member, Brother Raymond Hartfiel.

Our sincere sympathy goes to his family.

Secretary Mary Werner had the roll call of officers with all being present, and then she read the minutes of the previous meeting; the minutes were accepted as read.

Financial Secretary Aleene Zwahr and Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendal gave their reports. Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert VV alzel read the schedule of activities at the hall for the coming month and then gave the financial report; all of these reports were accepted as given.

On the sick list, we have Sister Vlasta Holt who had eye surgery and Cynthia Blinka who is recovering from a tonsilectomy. We wish you both a speedy recovery.

Brother Herbert Nowotny reported for the Rules and Regulations Committee.

We were all happy to have Sister Stefanie Walzel at the meeting. She has been ailing for some time and doesn't come out too often. Come again whenever you can.

The report of the audit on the Memorial Fund book was given by Sister Nowotny; all was in order.

Welcome to our lodge, Ruth Ann Laza, a new policyholder, and Brother Joe Hubenak for taking additional insurance.

Refund checks were handed out and Aleene Zwahr was the recipient of the attendance prize.

The meeting adjourned and "Happy Birthday" was sung to Brother Edwin Susan. Sister Benita Walzel graciously served us coffee and cake after the meeting which everyone enjoyed, to honor Edwin. We wish you many more birthday's Edwin.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY

Dear Members and Guests: I have missed out on several events for the past two weeks. September 6, we had the Boot Hill Band with a special performer, Claude Gray, who added entertainment that was a treat to most of the crowd. It really turned out to be a great success, and, also, Youth Club Leader Linda Michka, together with the youth club members, achieved a fraternal act by collecting $102 for Muscular Dystrophy which took place September 1st. The lesson like that is good training for children not to be selfish and to always look out for others who are less fortunate.

We had Madison Express performed here at our lodge September 13 for the first time and, as far as I know from comments from people present, they enjoyed their performance real well. I think next time they come we will have even more people come to enjoy them.

We had a fair crowd.

Our meeting took place September 8 and it turned out to be short and harmonious; all officers had good reports and, as always, there is more room for improvements. Our parking lots are one

of our next projects, which will need to be developed. We have enough land for parking but, due to the fact that it is not all fully developed, many guests are parking outside lodge premises.

We have our game night every Thursday at 7:30 p.m.; come and support the lodge.

We were all happy to have Richard Bevin and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Gibbs and also several others who came from far away places.

Dear Members: At our August monthly meeting, several goodies were discussed.

Looks like our parking lot will soon receive a face lift and we will soon start preparing for our Annual Chili Supper and Fall Festival. Our 'Battle of the Bands' is just around the corner and LOOK OUT for advertisement for our "Womanless Wedding" Play.

We have a large number of members who are attending game night in Round Rock and really enjoy themselves. We are happy for Round Rock for adding this attraction to their lodge.

Again, we're real glad to see our members who have been hospitalized up and about. Most recent has been Sister Albina Mogonye. Get Well Wishes, Thoughts and Prayers are extended to her.

Dear Members: President Henry Linhart called our monthly meeting to order Friday, September 5, 1980, at 8:13 p.m.

Seventy-two members present stood and recited the pledge of allegiance to our flag. All remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of our departed social member, Brother Herbert W. Jochen, formerly of Schulenburg, Texas, but had made his home with his son and family, the Nelson Jochens in Houston, for the past two years. May he rest in peace; he is being greatly missed.

The meeting then proceeded with officers' reports being given.

Youth Leader Henrietta Veselka gave a report on our youth club, under her direction, and their outcome at State YAD in Temple, August 24th: Curtis Kieschnick came back with a first place ribbon, Dennis Veselka with a second place, and Keith Kieschnick in third place with his talent entry. Youth Club No. 142 took 9th place at State YAD this year; progress was made and continues.

Congratulations to our leader and fine youth members.

We reported only one sick member this month, Henry Hermis; we hope you are feeling much better and we need you back around the lodge.

New members for August were: Richard Mares, Joseph Ralph Murray, Jr., Laura Diane Weikel, and Annie Pavlicek all secured by Sales Representatives Tumis and Melnar.

Brother Don Steinman gave us a report on the State YAD that was held in Temple. Sister Rose Steinman and their son Jodie also attended.

Sister Carolyn Milan, our youth leader, gave a youth club report.

Sister Maria Prill bid everyone good-bye; she is leaving Thursday for a two-month visit with her family in Germany.

Sisters Jeanie Mason, Carrie Bell Milan and Billie Jo Mason took off yesterday evening for a few days in Las Vegas. We hope they have some good luck.

The District III meeting was discussed and we hope to see many of you. We are

asking the ladies to bring pastry of their choice for lunch, which will be served at 12 noon. It will be appreciated.

Our meeting ended by Brother Benny Pavey being our door prize recipient and refreshments.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, October 12, at 3 p.m.

Dear Members arid Friends: The Executive meeting for September was held September 3, at 8 p.m. All officers were present. Many important business matters were discussed.

The monthly meeting for September was held Thursday night, September 11, at 8 p.m.; about thirty members attended. The pledge of allegiance was led by Sister Debbie Dlabaj.

Minutes of the August meeting were read by Sister Judy Patton, recording secretary, and they were approved as read. The minutes of the executive meeting were also read and approved as read. No members were reported on the sick list and no deaths were reported.

Sister Judy Patton read a letter from the September 10, 1980 issue of Vestnik sent in by Sylvia Laznovsky concerning the folk dance clinic, which will be held September 20th, at Sokol Gymnastic Center in Ennis. She extended an invitation to other organizations to participate.

Louis Kudrna, financial secretary, made his report on finances for the month of August. James Whitfill made a favorable report on the progress on Family Game Night. Workers are still needed to Kai) on Wednesday nights, so if you have some spare time, your help will be appreciated.

Johnnie Krajca, a member of the booking committee, reported that bands have been booked for the first and fourth Saturdays of each month for next year.

The first Saturday will be country/western music, and the fourth Saturday will be polka music. The first weekend in May will be an exception because that will be Polka Festival on that Saturday; it sounds like a fun-time is planned for next year.

Members voted to give a donation of $10 to the Ennis Chamber of Commerce for the Christmas lights put up every year to herald the coming Christmas Holidays.

Wednesday, September 24, 1980 Members also voted to check prices on a new ice-maker because the old machine has stopped working. A decision will be made at the next meeting.

George Good asked if any progress has been made on getting the portico repaired. President Glenn Kudrna reported that the contractor will name a date soon, when he will start the repairs.

The following new members were welcomed to the lodge: Tommy Macalik, Jennifer Lynne Honza, Cody Wayne Salazar, Cynthia Ann Mulanax, Randy Ford Mulanax, Caroline Sue Mulanax, Allegra Mulanax and David Wayne Gurecky.

In conclusion, premium refund checks were passed out by Sister Patton and the meeting was adjourned by President Kudrna.

All polka dancers: Get out your polka dancing shoes and come to dance to the great music of Czech Harvesters September 27; then on October 4, Bryant roster and The Texas Travelers will be back to play for your dancing pleasure. If you missed him when they were here before, then make a note to enjoy this one because they play some great music.

According to the calendar, Autumn is just around the corner. I'm sure everyone will be looking forward to the cooler weather and hopefully some much-needed rain. This has been a long hot and dry summer, so let's hope for a better one next year.

Those mentioned on the sick list were Sisters Rosie Stepan and Olga Stepan, Brothers Emil Schovajsa, Frank Lesikar (with a broken wrist), Bill Luksa (with two fractured fingers), and Russell Psencik had a ear accident. There may he other members who are ill, but I am not aware or notified of any, so I don't know about it if there are others; we hope all who I have mentioned have a speedy recovery.

Secretary Nelda Marek read the minutes and correspondence: a thank

11 you note from the family of Brother Martin Zabcik for the flowers, and a thank you note from Sister Viasta Marek for the money donation given her to help her rebuild her home after losing it recently in a fire.

We welcomed visitors Charlie Waits and Edd Sebek.

We needed some workers for our game night which we have every Thursday night. Brother Bill Sebek volunteered to work once-a-month.

Vice President Dan Sebek spoke to us on information he got from SL Vice-Presidpnt Bernie Gebala on the purpose of our lodge which is insurance.

He continued by saying: That's why the organization started to provide insurance in time of need for you and your family, also fellowship and fraternalism; so many of us forget this, that the backbone of our lodge is insurance and that we need to get more members and keep them in our lodge. The sales representatives and any member who may be interested in becoming a sales representative will be challenged to meet and discuss ways on how to sell insurance and gain new members. SL Vice-President Bernie Gebala would be glad to attend this meeting and give us his ideas over a cup of coffee and kolache, which our lodge could furnish. If enough people are interested, they will get the date of the meeting. Be sure and sign up as soon as possible so they can plan for this group session.

Financial Secretary Doris Svoboda presented new members to the membership and they were accepted. We welcome Gerald Drews (sold by Sales Representative Norma Andel), Helen Tome (sold by Sister Carol Chervenka), Mark Murray and Robert Cabla (sold by Brother Eugene Haisler), Helen Malcik (sold by Sister Louise Zavodny), and Kenneth Coufal. Sister Norma Andel had a policy renewal.

Youth Leader Norma Andel reminded us of the State Royalty contest to be held Saturday, September 27 at Lodge No. 187 in Round Rock, beginning at 4:3Q p.m. in the afternoon. We wish our Queen Kelli Andel and her Duchess Diane Dorner good luck. Let's all try to go and support them; I have been mentioning this a lot in my letters. This is the first time we had a queen from our lodge to represent District II and we are proud of this and all our youth members who participate in any way in the happenings of the youth club. I believe that this is another way to keep our lodge growing: to show interest in the youth and their activities.

To start off, I wish to recognize the hosting committee for the past three dances. I am sorry I have not been present and had to verify same over the telephone.

First, I have a correction for the Saturday, August 25 dance: It should have been Lowrina Lindemann in charge and in the box office, while her husband, Karl with Franklin Bravenec seated the guests; Almeda Bravenec was at the door.

Friday, September 5 dance with music by the Texas Brew orchestra was hosted

by Marian Mikes in charge and husband Ludwig, also Rudy and Celeste Darilek and Adele Hughs. Of course, Vice Chairman Bennie Kocich, as always, was also present.

Saturday, September 6 dance with Leroy Matocha, the good old polka music, was hosted by Henry Kite in charge with Charles and Margaret Kadlecek and Ruth Watkins.

by Vrazels, was hosted by Gus Gerlich in charge and holding the box office, while his wife Annie (dressed in a pink chiffon attire) was ushering guests with Ted Krischke. Lillie Spies (dressed in black) with Emilie Krischke (in blue gown greeted the guests at the door.

Sister Pearl Hanka, our Birthday Club president, spent the Labor Day weekend in Weimar, Texas with her family and went back the following weekend to celebrate her birthday September 15 in the home of her daughter Arleen and husband Alfred Marshall and youngest granddaughter Susie (Susie is an expert

12 twirler in high school); also present were grandson Joe and his wife Tam Marshall of Spring, Texas; granddaughter Karen with husband Larry Hernandez and son Shawn (that is Pearl's first great-grandchild of La Grange, Texas). "Happy Birthday" to Pearl.

Sister Annie Green lost her brother-inlaw Robert Doran, age 75, who passed away August 31 after ailing for five long years. Robert Doran was laid to rest September 3, 1980 in Denver, Colorado.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Doran; daughter, Jean; and grandson, Wicke Smith. Annie stayed with the family and returned home the following Sunday: A lovely wedding took place Saturday, September 13, 1980 to unite two lonely souls: Agnes Lesak and Odel Peterson exchanged vows at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Theresa Catholic Church by Rev. Jim Janousek. The bride (in blue) walked down the aisle on the arm of her son Raymond Lesak. The groom was escorted by his niece Helen Monroe. The maid of honor was her daughter, Linda Rivers, and the pretty little ringbearer was her granddaughter Diane Rivers.

The best man was George Monroe.

Serving as witnesses were Joe and Lucie Prazak. Helen Hegwood with her golden voice sang "Ave Maria" and the "Lord's Prayer" accompanied on the organ by Jane Hagen. Her son Lin Lesak read the prayer. After the wedding ceremony the reception was held at Lodge No. 88 in the Red Room. The lovely table with delicious food and refreshments were catered by Edna Wehring. The newlyweds are contemplating a honeymoon trip to Las Vegas. Congratulations!

A special affair took place of two brothers and one sister September 13, 1980 in Moulton, Texas when three couples celebrated their wedding anniversaries and pledged their vows in the Moulton Catholic Church. They are Robert and Mary Koudelka (40 years), Eddie and Rosie Koudelka (40 years), Gayson and Lorene (Koudelka) Windham (25 years). The reception and dance followed in the Moulton Hall with music

by Leroy Rybak and the Swinging Strings. The brides: Mary Koudelka wore a light blue gown, Rosie Koudelka wore a wine colored gown and Lorene Windham was dressed in a blue gown.

Mary's four bridesmaids were attired in red. Over three hundred guests were attending and helping to make this special. Congratulations!

November 8 the big band of Tommy Dorsey will make their appearance here at Lodge No. 88 in the Chandelier Ballroom; and for the end of the year,

VESTNf IC December 31st Glenn Miller will entertain. Make your plans now.

The Czech Play for November 9, 1980 is in full swing and the rehearsals are coming along fine. I am sure we have a nice production in the making for us to enjoy. More information later.

President Jerry Tomastik called the September 10 meeting to order, followed by the pledge of allegiance.

All officers and all committee chairmen were present.

It was reported to the members that Bobby Poncik and also Tony Poncik are in the hospital. We wish them a speedy recovery.

These new members were accepted to Lodge No. 177: Robert Lee Gates, Loretta Ann Miller, Shawn Eric Oujezdsky, Patsy Ruth Moss, Geo. Thomas Moss, Dali Allen Cater, Jennifer M. Gammill, Brenda Ray Gammill, Lori D. Gammill, Mary Oleta Guthrie, John L. Guthrie, Christi Lynn Reedy, Robin Michelle Castle, Marvin Elton Castle, Jerome Emil Hoelscher, Garry Lynn Coufal, Lianor M. Matamoros.

One member, Barbara J. Brown transferred from Lodge No. 87. Albin Emil Driska became a social member.

All the above members were accepted.

Very good reports were also heard from all the .other chairmen. The lodge is doing quite well and, without the help of some very faithful members, this would not be possible.

Curtis Hawk gave the youth report; he stated there would be a garage sale October 4 and 5 and also a bake sale.

The youth club thanked the lodge for the bus trip to Astroworld.

Board of Trustees met Wednesday, September 3 at 7:30 p.m. and all the trustees were present. It was recommended, by the board, to elect another trustee member to take Bill Hutka's place; also the board decided the lodge dress code policy will enforced at all lodge functions. A larger trash compactor will be obtained.

The Audit Committee reported they have audited some of the lodge books; they reported that the financial secretary's books were in good standing.

The committee will audit the rest of the books this coming week.

Brother Louis Driska brought to the members' attention that there were too

many children getting into the lodge without paying. There was much discussion on this matter. We have been having large crowds at the dances and the adults who pay full price have no place to sit down. We can only tell how many people are in the lodge by the ticket sales. Jerice McMillian made a motion to charge children starting at the age of 6 full price; it was decided to try this. We certainly want everyone to feel welcome and try to accommodate everyone who attends our lodge functions.

Next the election of a new trustee was in order. Nominations were open off the floor; three members: Cecil Lagrane, Willie Dusek and Dewayne Merrideth were nominated; the new trustee is Dewayne Merrideth. Congratulations, Dewayne!

Dorothy Massey made a motion to put, into the minutes, all committee chairmen's progress reports; a seconded was made by Curtis Hawk.

A $150 donation was made to the Little River Academy Jaycees at the Academy School Football Field; they are building restrooms at the field.

The next meeting will be held October 8, at 7:30 p.m.; youth meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Please attend!

We were very glad to have Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pustka at our September meeting. Please come, again.

Our regular montly meeting was held September 8 with President Mildred Holeman presiding. The members stood in a moment of silent tribute to departed members Helen B. Daniels, Mary Ellen Russell, and Franke Claude Sykes, Jr. The only visitor was Ruth Watkins.

Brother Albert Ognowski was reported as being on the sick list.

Good reports were given by all officers and committees. Members of the Youth Club showed trophies won at State YAD„ including Youth Club of the Year and the winning Scrapbook. Margie Barcak, Vivian Hegwood, and Debbie Wehring entertained the members with a dance routine.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox announced the following special dances: a battle dance Saturday, October 18, with the Edna Polka Boys and Julius Tupa and the Night Shift playing from 8 p.m. until 2; a free dance on Czech Day,

Wednesday, September 24, 1980 October 26, with Vrazels playing; the Tommy Dorsey 16-piece traveling band playing on November 8. Tickets for this big band dance will go on sale on Friday, October 17, at $7.50 per person.

Dramatic Club President Marceil Malak announced that the Czech Play, a comedy with good actors, will be presented on November 9.

District V President Norval Crossman reminded everyone of the fall District V meeting to be held at Lodge No. 142 on October 12. District Queen Margie Barcak and King Ronnie Barcak gave their speeches.

On behalf of the Social Club, Chairman Willie Wehring presented a plaque to Brother Ed Kadlecek in appreciation of his many years of dedicated service.

Board Chairman Ed Zalmanek presented another plaque to Brother Kadlecek, who will be 80 this month, making him Honorary Chairman of the Board of Trustees. President Holeman read a resolution in his honor which was adopted unanimously by the membership.

Door prizes were won by Janet Raymond, Celestine Darilek, and Milert Antrich. King Hegwood won the special prize from Liberty Savings and Loan.

Refreshments were served after the meeting. Donors were Vladimir and Tillie Bily in honor of her birthday and Joe and Irma Zucha in honor of the Board of Trustees and President Holeman. A cake honoring Brother Ed Kadlecek was served. Another cake, sent

by Sister Patsy Walker in appreciation of those who remembered her after the tragic fire at her home, was also served.

Here I want to make a comment about this wonderful lady. She lost her beautiful four-bedroom home and still found time to bake a cake for her friends!

The regular monthly meeting was called to 6rder by Sister Pearl Hanka, Wednesday, September 10, at 11:15 a.m.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Sister Rosalee Kostorn and they were accepted as read.

Sister Kostom thanked Sister Della Kadlecek for taking the minutes while she and her husband, Tim were in Europe.

Sister Lillie Spies, treasurer, gave a complete report of our finances and they were very satisfactory.

13 The Birthday Club Sisters were presented with a beautiful handmade Afghan that had belonged to Sister Frances Walla, one of our most faithful sisters who has passed on. Sister Frances Walla's daughter, Valasta Moore, gave it to the club in memory of her mother.

Many thanks to Sister Moore for her generosity. Sister Frances Walla was always making something pretty and giving it to the Birthday Club. We miss her smiling face at our meetings and functions.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Tillie Bily, Pearl Hanka and Birdie Hilsher; these three sisters were present and it makes it so nice to sing to the sisters present. We wish you many more happy birthdays.

To note allegorically is to compare our club with a well-cared-for garden or field. With constant attention, planting, watering and feeding a beautiful harvest is ensured. Thus wise, it is so for us: when we attend rehearsals regularly, learn new songs and perpetuate old favorites, more still, support planned activities will we sing and sound beautifully.

Club business heard the reading of the minutes, last-minute information from the Dallas Czech Day committee, a letter for a future activity and discussion on possible new folders.

Who said women can't keep a secret?

You don't know our Seaton Choral Club members! To surprise Annie Jakubec and Dorothy Morris, who share the same September birthdate and to honor all birthdays of the year, the telephone committee planned an after-the-meeting party. The gals made delicious sandwiches of all kinds, chips and homemade cakes. And not till it was announced by Martha Klusacek at the close of the meeting did either one of us have an inkling of what had been planned. Secret? Yes, it was. Surprise?

Yes, that, too, and what a nice one!

FEATURES NOTICE FOR CZECH CLASS A basic conversational Czech course at Temple Junior College will start Monday Night, September 29th.

The class will meet in Room 105 from 7 to 10 p.m. on ten successive Monday evenings through December 1st. The course will be taught by Jeanette Jarolik of Holland, Texas.

This is a Continuing Education course and registration may be completed by filling out a simple information card and paying the $28 registration fee.

RUCKABAA-SCHILLER WEDDING Vicki Dawn Huckabaa and Joseph Wayne Schiller were united in holy matrimony August 30, 1980. The afternoon wedding was held with a mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Humble, Texas with Father Adam McClosky officiating.

Parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. Howard Huckabaa. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben V. Schiller, Sr. Both sets of parents are from Houston, Texas. The groom is a member of Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

The bride was given in marriage by her father. Her mother wore a lovely long soft pink gown overlaid with chiffon in a cape effect. She was presented a rose by the bride before the wedding. The mother of the groom chose a beautiful turquoise long dress with a sequined bodice and was presented a rose after the ceremony. Both mothers wore white rose corsages. Both fathers wore black tuxedos with black trim on the ruffles of the shirts and white roses in the lapels.

The bride was adorned in a long white dress of organza and Chantilly lace with a Queen Anne neckline which was

beaded with pearls. The full bishop sleeves were appliqued with Chantilly lace and ended in a circle of lace ruffles.

The full skirt flowed from under the bustline and was beautifully done in lace and the bottom of the skirt had several rows of lace that completely encircled the dress and flowed into a chapel length train. Her matching two-tiered veil fell to her finger tips. Her lace Camelot cap richly accented the veil. The bottom tier of the veil had lace around the edge. She carried a cascade bouquet of apricot colored Sonia roses, white carnations, baby's breath, and English ivy with long ribbon streamers. Around her neck was a gold necklace with a diamond teardrop that was a gift from the groom. She wore her mother's gold serpentine bracelet.

The groom wore a solid white long-tailed tuxedo accentuated by a carnation with a Sonia rose in the center.

The Maid of Honor was Patricia Glenn and was distinguished by carrying three roses instead of one as the bridesmaids.

The Best Man was Layne Christian.

The other attendants to the bride were Shirley Effinger, Cynthia Meadows, Melanie Tutor, Pam Akers (niece of the groom), and Tina Carley. The Maid of Honor and all bridesmaids wore identical apricot floor length dresses which had spaghetti straps. The dresses were covered with a knee-length jacket trimmed with lace. The attendants carried single Sonia roses, baby's breath, and white and apricot ribbons. Baby's breath highlighted their hair.

Groomsmen were Thomas Smith, Victor Minjares, Ben Schiller, Jr. (brother of the groom), Terry Banks, and Dennis Simmons. They wore white tuxedos with Sonia roses and apricot trimmed shirts.

The ushers were Darrell Clark and James Tutor who were dressed in black tuxedos.

The bride's brother, Keith Huckabaa, was the ring bearer at the double ring ceremony, wearing a white tux. The groom's niece, Corinna Schiller, was the flowergirl. She wore a street length white dress with ruffles and carried a white basket of multi-colored assorted flowers.

The reception followed in the church hail with Donna Huckabaa, sister of the bride, receiving the guests. A white lace decorated table held the wedding cake, punch and coffee. The wedding cake was made and decorated by a friend, Elena Lee and served by Brenda Webster, sister of the bride. The cake was three-tiered divided by lace columns. The top layer had a bride and groom under a golden cross and stairsteps to the other layers

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Schiller had attendants dressed in apricot dresses. The middle layer held wedding bells and the bottom layer held a cherub.

Lace hearts with apricot and autumn colored roses in the center were scattered around the cake. Orange sherbert punch and coffee was served by Gail Johnson, friend of the bride.

On an adjacent table was the groom's cake which was made by the groom's Godmother and aunt, Bea Lejsal. It was a two-layer chocolate cake with a horseshoe layer on top for good luck and two white doves for decoration. This cake was served by Mary Ann Akers, sister of the groom.

An old-fashioned Czech dinner and dance followed with Betty Tice, sister of the groom. and Javis Schiller, sister-in-law of the groom in charge of the serving. The meat consisted of barbecued brisket and sausage, potatoe salad, homemade pickles, onions, bread, kolache, strudel, and buchta. Tea and keg beer was served. All the food was made and donated by relatives and friends..

The newlywed couple spent their honeymoon in Acapulco and have made their home in Humble, Texas.

We discussed old and new business.

We have two new members, Kim and Shane Dillon. We welcome them into our youth club.

Dear Readers, The youth club held their meeting Sunday, September 14 after the mother lodge meeting. The attendance was good and we had one visitor.

The month of August was busy for us; we baked bread and kolache and practiced Beseda for State YAD and Westfest.

August 24 State YAD was held at Temple High School. Our Beseda Dancers won first place; Darrell Uptmor won "Junior of the Year"; Theresa won first place in Home Arts; Bobby Hykel won the $500 Scholarship. We are proud of you, also all of the State winners and none-winners.

August 28-29, we had a booth at Westfest. We did real well and we also had a float in the parade; the Beseda Dancers danced twice a day. I want to thank each of you who donated kolache, jelly roll, strudels, can goods and other items plus who helped us bake kolache, bread and worked at the booth. A great big Thank You to each one of you.

Our youth club gave a donation to Jerry Lewis' Kids September 1st.

Sunday, October 5th, the youth club was asked to perform in the Beseda at the State Fair in Dallas; all the youth club members dance at the Band Shell at 11:45 a.m. and at 3:20 p.m., the State Beseda Winners will perform at the Big Tex Stage.

The State Royalty will be held at Lodge No. 187 in Round Rock; let's all try to attend if we can.

The District III meeting will be held at Lodge No. 154 in Fort Worth; let's also get-together and attend the meeting.

We started on our Christmas projects, so let's come on Fridays so we can get everything worked out soon.

The youth club will be selling stick candy, a nice gift for Christmas. They will also be selling knives and Christmas cards; put your order in soon, so we can send them off.

Birthday celebrants in September were Lilian Perez and Theresa Dobecka, Darrell Uptmor brought the cake.

Thank you, Darrell! Terry Hykel will bring the cake for October.

Next on the agenda was the report on the treasury. District Youth Counselor Ed Kamas reported that we had approximately $825.11 total in our bank accounts in Empire Bank in Dallas, and.

West. Bank and Trust in West was approximately $369.46; the correct total in both banks is approximately: $1,194.57.

DYC Kamas reported that we need to sell many cookbooks; he has a lot of them in the car.

We had a poster contest today and Lodge No. 6 was the only one that: brought a poster. They received $15.

There was a motion made that the South would have a swimming party; this was seconded and passed by the membership.

There was a motion made and seconded that we would have a poster contest once-a-year at the fall meeting and this would be at the fall meeting.

The theme for the poster is "Highlights of Club During the Past Year."

The charity project was postponed until the fall meeting.

Under unfinished business we discussed a garage sale. The date was set for October 4th. James Cox made a motion for the sale to be at Carol Merredith's and Kevin Beck seconded the motion.

We then decided to have someone check into the Town and Country Mall for space for the garage sale and then v, L decided on an emergency meeting September 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge.

Kevin Beck won $5; Jessica Washburne, $3; and Anne Cox, $1 for door prizes.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of the entire membership of Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother BEN L. WEHRING, age 87, of 1904 Marjorie Street, Brenham, who passed away September 1, 1980, at 9:50 p.m. in a Brenham nursing home.

Brother Wehring was born September 22, 1892 in New Wehdem (Austin County), Texas, the son of the late Bernhart and Bertha Remmert Wehring. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith in New Wehdem and attended Austin County Public Schools.

November 22, 1935, he was married to Olga Warmke at the Salem Welcome

Lutheran Church of Welcome. She preceded him in death September 15: 1974.

Brother Wehring was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church and of the Buddy Wright Post No. 48 Of the American Legion in Brenhatn. was a retired distributor of the Rottstoa Post.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Joyce Wehring of Houston; two granticht dren, Patricia Ann Wehring and Ben David Wehring of Houston; four sisters, Mrs. Meta Warmke of Brenham, Mrs. Emma Eben of Rosenberg, Mrs. Ellie Kveton of Eagle Lake and Mrs. 'Ale Schroeder of Brenham.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Frida Nehrkorn, and by two infant sons.

Pallbearers were Walter Schulz, Leon Simank, Jr., Dennis Wehring, Bennie Hohlt and Hans Nehrkorn.

Services were held Thursday, September 4, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Thomas Swygert and the Rev. Kenneth Moerbe officiating. Burial was in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham.

Arrangements were under the direction of Brenham Memorial Chapel.

May our departed brother rest lit eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.
