In this issue we are printing the pictures of our State YAD, held at Temple High School, which we promised you, our members and readers, last week. We waited a little longer so that we would have good prints to publish for you. We feel they have turned out rather well and that it was worth the delay. Please read SYD Dorothy Massey's report and remarks about the. State YAD held in Temple and you are encouraged to read the report from Brother Nick A. Morris about the State Royalty to he held at Lodge No, 187, Round Rock, Saturday, September 27th. That event will close out our youth year as far as district and state activities are concerned, however, remember that youth activities continue continuously at the local lodge level. Be active in your youth activities, youth and adults alike!

Westfest 1980 is over and it was a pleasant two days just prior to Monday, September 1st (Labor Day) when people could rest up; that is, all except most of the citizens of this "Friendly City of West" who had to dismantle the booths, wiring, equipment, etc. on that date:The one thing that disappoints this editor about the news media is the fact that they do not grasp the true idea about what Westfest really is! There seemed to be no effort to show the cultural aspect of the once-a-year event; instead pictures of beer drinking (guzzling) and (in some cases) dousing some individual's head with beer; a beer shampoo, maybe?

Wednesday, September 10, 1980 There was not even a picture of the first-place float (which took hours and long evenings of many individuals to create), made by the Czech folk Dancers of West, the enjoyment on the dance floor, the Czech, German, Mexican, etc. folk dancers in the arena and so forth.

Possibly it is rightfully said: "If a young kid knocks a grandmother down in the street and robs her, a dozen reporters and cameras will be there, however. if a youth helps a crippled, elderly grandmother across the street, no one will even take the trouble to notice it!"

Ed G. Vavra Reporter ** * Brother Charlie Roznovak, 90, formerly of Deer Park, Texas, died September 1st, 1980. Funeral services were held Wednesday and burial was in Taylor City Cemetery. Brother Roznovak joined the SPJST Society in 1933 and he held his membership in Lodge No. 29, Taylor.

Reunions SVOBODA REUNION The fourth annual reunion of the decendants of Vaclav and Barbara Poboril Svoboda will be held at the Seaton Community Center in Seaton Sunday, October 5th beginning at 9 a.m. Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch with a family-style lunch served. Drinks, plates, forks, knives, napkins and bread will be provided.

Dues will be $2.50 per family or $1.25 for single persons. We encourage all to come and join in the food and fellowship.

LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Members: When my last letter was printed in the Vestnik reporting the August meeting, I noticed that two paragraphs were missing: one about the birthdays and the other about door prizes.

I always write my letter and then type it; I must have skipped those paragraphs.

This gave me a chance to write another letter and congratulate our State Youth Achievement Day Winners Kimberly Schneider and Alan Haisler; the event was held August 24th in Temple.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Members: August 18th at our monthly meeting, President Sadecky called our monthly meeting to order. Flag Bearer Cheri Petr led us in the pledge to our United States flag.

Secretary Salac read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved.

She also acknowledged all correspondence to the lodge.

Reports were given by the various committees, but the items taking much discussion was the approval of a new

The Ennis-Dallas Fraternal Council meeting will be held Wednesday, September 24, 1980 at the KJT Lodge No. 35 Hall on South Paris Street in Ennis. Lodge No. 35 will host the meeting. For all the surrounding area lodges, plan to attend this meeting.

Wednesday, September 10, 1980 LODGE NO. 186, CALDWELL Dear Members: At our regular meeting August 10th, I stated that the pay back on our proposed loan would be $39,600; I made an error, it would be only $28,600.

I am happy that the matter still passed by a 2 to 1 margin. I regret that we have not been able to take this to the Supreme Lodge officers.

There are too many unfinished matters and loose ends in this and we have not made any substantial progress, however, we are still trying.

I hope everyone can attend our September 14th meeting because this will be a very important one.

SPJST LODGE NO. 47, SEATON CHORAL CLUB

Dear Readers, Our members are energetic and eager.

Though pastimes and interests range from family entertainment to reading to you-name-it, the second and fourth Tuesday evening of each month are reserved for singing. Because most of the singers have been "born and bred" in this area and have the club as a common denominator, they enjoy the social moments afforded by attending.

In addition, at the August 26 rehearsal, Gladys Kovar of the Red Ranger community and William (Will) Tomecek, a Templeite, became new members.

We "initiated" them properly; both made themselves at home with us and promised to come next time.

What songs we practiced were some long-ago-learned and not-so-long-ago: "Co je to za dev'eatko?" and melodies and words taken from the Supraphon "Cesk3i Folklore" record for "Olivo, Olivo" and "To tfeboriska luka." While all of us have sung them many times over, we use the practices to work as a group. It takes about 20 minutes to "warm up," and those who consistently attend are pleased with the results.

Michael Morris, Joyce Pechal, Mary Holick, Natalie Houdek and Jennifer Pechal, baby granddaughter of Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, were our guests.

Michael practiced on stage and was given the English translations to the Czech songs by Emily Stuteville. It is the members' invitation to have our visitors come again and, better still, become regular singers.

Present with us but unable to sing due to dental work was Martha Klusacek.

Cara Lou Young now of West and a former SCC member is recovering from surgery; she was also youth leader of Lodge No. 47 for several years. Renewed good health is our hope for her.

Minutes were read by Secretary Treasurer Ruby L. Bolton with other reports and statements pertinent to club activities and necessities. Bus-seat money was collected from Dallas Czech Day singers; a telephone committee was selected, those being Della Psencik, Helen Janacek, Dorothy Morris and Martha Klusacek, to facilitate any unexpected changes in club events.

Song book makeover is continuing with the help of Brother Otto Hanus who is making new copies for some hard-toread pages. The club will bear any expense for same. The books date to 1966 and need periodic repair.

Specific information will be made available and discussed pertaining to other proposed ideas and invitations.

September 9 is the date of our next immediate practice/meeting for the Czech Day program, decisions and fall planning. Our club is as good as you, the members, make it. Be with us; sing with us.

AMERICAN CZECH CULTURE SOCIETY Czech Day at Dallas Fair is due to be excitement aplenty.

The American Czech Culture Society wishes to announce that the 40th American-Czechoslovak Day this year will be at State Fair of Texas in Dallas Sunday, October 5, 1980 and extends the cordial invitation to all those of Czech descent and many friends who admire our heritage to attend this day and make it one of the best Czech Days yet. After all this is four decades of Czech Days and the Czechs in Texas have really something to celebrate. To those of you who are familiar with the facilities of the fair ground the program will be similar to those in the past years except there will be lots of new faces in the program; same as last two years Roman Catholic Mass will be celebrated in Czech starting at 9 a.m. in the downstairs auditorium of Hall of State Building. The celebrant will be Most Rev. John L. Morkovsky, S.T.D., Bishop Diocese of GalvestonHouston and Amos Pavlik, president of KJT, will be lector and also it will be

Hopefully, starting about 9 a.m. in the Band Shell, hot coffee and good kolache will be served to all earlycomers. To reach the Band Shell follow the street by the duck pond from Big Tex, and also it is located at the corner of Forest and Second Avenues. Here in the Band Shell the main program of our day will be held, starting at 10:30 a.m. and lasting all day till 6 p.m.; here good food and refreshments will be available from noon on.

In Band Shell the oldest Czech gentleman will be selected as the king of Czech Day and the oldest Czech lady attending the queen and the proper trophies will be awarded to them and the longest-married couple (Czech) will receive a plaque.

There will be plenty of merriment, folk dancing. singing and good music for your enjoyment or even to dance by.

There will be something to enjoy for everybody and even some souvenirs can be bought.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter P. Stevens of Leona, Texas were honored on their fiftieth wedding anniversary by their children, Mr. and Mrs. W.B. S.PJ,S.T. NURSING HOME RHYTHM BAND Deep in the Heart of Texas resides a volunteer of musical note, Mrs. Karine Gilstrap. This lyric talent has organized a Rhythm Band at a nursing home in Taylor.

Karine Gilstrap organized the S.P.J.­ S.T. Nursing Home Rhythm Band about three years ago. This summer she was instrumental in getting the band federated through her music club!

As an added treat for the holidays, Mrs. Gilstrap tapes the band playing up a storm. The local radio station, KTAE-Taylor, generously provides time on the air to play these tapes, so that the patients can hear themselves!

If you happen to be driving in their area during the holidays, listen for the dulcet tones of the Rhythm Band of Taylor, Texas!

PLANO COUPLE WEDS IN ST. MARK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH Diane Marie Gajdica and Christopher Paul Deily were married August 16, 1980 in a double ring ceremony at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Plano. Monsignor Claude Smyth officiated. The parents are Mr. and Mrs. Laddie A. Gajdica and Mr. and Mrs. Myron B. Deily, all of Plano.

The, organist was Art Kenne and soloist was Karen Davis of Nacogdoches who sang "Time For Joy" while the mother of the groom, escorted by her son, Steve, lit a candle on the right of the unity candle.· The bride's mother, escorted by her son, Ronnie, lit the candle on the left. Later in the ceremony the vocalist sang "It Seems I've Always Loved You" while the bride and groom lit the unity candle.

Ronnie and Chris Gajdica, brothers of the bride each read from scripture during the ceremony.

The bride was given away by her father.

She wore a white chiffon gown with high· neckline of ďesprit accented with silk Venice lace and highlighted with seed pearls. The gown had an empire waist, chapel length train and full sheer long sleeves. She wore a walking length veil with Venice lace caplet, accented with matching lace appliques along the bottom edge. Her bouquet was white silk cymbidium orchids and stephanotis. She carried her mother's handkerchief.

The groom wore a light gray tuxedo with cumberbund and tails and a boutonniere of white stephanotis.

Bridesmaids were Carla Perry of Lubbock, Kari Stainback of Waco, Sheri Dixon of Austin and Melissa Spell of Dallas. They wore long yellow quiana dresses accented by blouson chiffon waist. Each carried a white wicker basket filled with yellow and white daisies.

Myron B. Deily, father of the groom was best man. Groomsmen were Steve Deily, brother of the groom of Plano, Randy Draper of Euless, Jody Zorn of Waco and Mark Hurd of San Antonio.

Ronnie, Chris and John Gajdica and Tom Zimmerman of Dallas were ushers.

Their tuxedos matched the one worn by the groom. Their boutonnieres were white carnations.

The bride's mother wore a jade mist, long-sleeved chiffon gown with a white orchid corsage. The groom's mother wore a long blue quiana gown with a matching jacket. Her corsage was a white orchid.

A reception and dinner was held at the Church's Activity Center. The wedding cake table was covered with white organza and yellow swags. In the center of the table was a bouquet of yellow carnations, yellow and white daisies and baby's breath on top of a cupid pedestal.

The bride's cake was 4-tiered, decorated with yellow roses and green leaves and a cluster of white wedding bells on top.

The groom's table was also covered with white organza. His cake was chocolate, topped with frosted fruit.

Laura Hammer of Dallas and Kim Geiger of Plano served the wedding cake and Bev Morgan of Sherman and Cindy Jolly of Plano served the punch.

Janet Marek of Waco and Lori Walters of Garland presided at the bride's book.

The bride is a 1976 graduate of Plano Senior High School and a 1980 graduate of Baylor University in Waco where she graduated with honors, earning her bachelor's degree in elementary education. The groom graduated from Plano Senior High School in 1975 and Baylor University in 1979. He presently attends the American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, Arizona.

After a trip to Cancun, Mexico, the couple will nuke their home in Glendale, Arizona.

Diane's family are all members of Lodge No. 130, Dallas.

Mrs. Darrell Uptmor QUEENER, UPTMOR EXCHANGE VOWS AUGUST 23 IN TOURS On August 23, a candlelight ceremony in St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tours united in marriage Miss Paula Denise Queener and Douglas Wayne Uptmor. Rev. Frank Miller performed the ceremony.

Parents of the newlywed couple are Mr. and Mrs. James Queener of Lacy-Lakeview and Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey G. Uptmor of Elm Mott.

For her wedding, the bride chose a formal bridal gown of imported French Chantilly lace. The Queen Ann collar and bishop sleeves were accented with pearls. Her A-line skirt swept into a full train and had a pleated flounce. A silk illusion veil, edged in lace, was held by a tiny cap designed of lace. She carried a bouquet of silk roses in tones of blue, and rust surrounded by split carnations, lace, baby's breath and crystal rosettes.

Johna McDonald was maid of honor.

Bridesmaids were Debbie Ivy, Janice Saylor, Patricia Sullivan, Kelly White,

Joyce Wachsmann and Donna Queener.

Junior bridesmaid was Meredith McDonald.

The honor attendant wore a sky blue dress of sileste chiffon. It was designed in an empire style with a pleated skirt.

The scoop neckline had a cape which covered the shoulders.

The bridesmaids carried cascades of blue and beige silk roses with crystal rosettes, baby's breath, and lace. Their dresses were identical to the one wore by the maid of honor in a lighter shade of blue.

Best man was David Uptmor of Arlington. Groomsmen were Barret Ivy, Steve Saylor, Dale Bettge, Steve Uptmor, Kevin Jupe, David Dulock and Darrell Uptmor. Witnesses were Alphonse Wachsmann and William (Billy) Uptmor. Ushers were Ronnie Grones, Donnie Grones, Gaylon Dulock, and David Dickey.

Parents of the couple were hosts to a reception dinner and dance following the ceremony in Tours Hall. Music was furnished by "Billy Uptmor and the Makers". The wedding march was led

In fact, I would like to see more parent participation in all the youth activities because we need you and your children need you. What better way will you know about the work the youth leaders are doing than to get into the program with your children.

I want to extend a big thank you to lots of people for their work at State YAD. Everyone working certainly did their part and worked hard to make the day the success it was. It requires everyone filling their position to make the events run smoothly and to get it all finished as soon as possible. Everyone is anxious to get on the road back home because the next day begins another week. Thank you to all of you who stayed so the boys and girls could get their pictures made and their award money.

LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Vestnik Readers, The meeting of SRI ST Lodge No. 25 Youth Club was called to order at 7 p.m.

Tuesday night. The pledge of allegiance was recited and roll was called.

Final plans were made for our dance which was planned for August 30th.

A trip to Six Flags was discussed and we decided to wait until the weather cools down.

We talked about serving refreshments on the Wednesday game night instead of Saturday night dances. No decision was made.

The meeting was adjourned. Refreshments were served. This month we celebrated the birthd'ay of Arlene Honza.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY The Resolution Committee in behalf of the entire membership of Lodge No. 54, West, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister MRS. AUGUST [MARY FRANCES] MAREK, 82, of 300 Haven Street in West, who died August 21, 1980 in a local hospital.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Friday, at Aderhold Funeral Chapel in West, with Rev. Donald R. Gibbard officiating. Burial followed in National Cemetery near West.

Sister Marek was born September 7, 1897 in Washington County. She was a housewife and a member of First United Church in West and SPJST Lodge No. 54.

Her husband died in 1937. Her sons, Albert Marek (died March 11, 1978) and Walter Marek, (died as an infant), preceded her in death.

Survivors include: two sons, George Marek and Jerry Marek, both of Mart; three daughters, Mrs. Adele Nemec of West, Mrs. Irene Haskovee of Ennis, Mrs. Pauline Helona of West; one brother, John Macek of Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Olga Chapman of Fort Worth; 13 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

May she rest in peace.

ITEMS OF INTEREST AHEAD-OF-TIME SANDWICHES If you hate to make sandwiches and pack lunches every morning, take heart.

Here are a few suggestions for making sandwiches ahead of time from Dr. Cass Ryan-Crtme, a foods and nutrition specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A and M University System.

Most sandwich fillings will freeze, when properly packaged.

The old standby of peanut butter is an excellent choice for the freezer. Also cheese, sliced meat and fish are good choices for sandwiches you prepare ahead of time.

In addition, when you have leftover meat such as roast, and everyone in the family is tired of it, slice it and make a few sandwiches out of it.

For freezing, be sure to wrap the sandwiches in a moisture-proof material.

Labeling and dating are also recommended if you plan to make a large supply.

Sandwiches can be safely stored for three to four weeks in the freezer.

They defrost overnight in the refrigerator or in approximately three hours at room temperature.

Here are some special suggestions: Vegetables lose crispness in the freezer, so avoid using them as a sandwich filling.

If a slice of lettuce is desired, add it to the sandwich on the day it is defrosted for use.

Cooked eggs become rubbery or undesirable upon freezing.

Sandwich fillings that contain a lot of mayonnaise or salad dressing may cause the bread to become soggy.

Next time you are preparing sandwiches for all the members of your family who carry brown bags, why not prepare a few extra? Then when you're in a hurry one morning, you'll have a handy supply of ready-made lunches.

INSECTS SPOTTY

Texas' short pecan crop continues to progress under hot, dry conditions, with insects causing only spotty damage.

Growers are wrapping up spraying for the hickory shuckworm over the northern two-thirds of the state, and some spraying is under way for pecan weevils, says John N. Cooper, pecan pest

management agent with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A and M University System.

Dry conditions have kept weevil numbers down although some pests have emerged from the soil where recent rains fell.

According to Cooper, black aphids have also been light this season, with spray applications currently under way in Terrell County only.

Some pecan drop continues due to stem end blight in central and southern areas, but shedding of nuts due to drouth conditions has generally ceased since the crop is past the get stage.

Although this year's pecan crop is still in the making, Cooper advises growers interested in putting in a new orchard or in expanding their operations to order trees now to avoid the winter rush.

County Extension Offices have information on recommended varieties for different areas of the state. Growers should select varieties based on such factors as production, disease resistance, nut quality, tree strength, ripening date, age the tree bears, pollination and cold tolerance.

Cooper points out that there are: currently more than 200,000 acres of cultivated pecans in Texas with an annual gross income of $30 to $90 million.

SKATING SENSE PREVENTS INJURIES Prevent skating injuries by using skating sense, cautions Mary Ann Shirer, a health education specialist.

Skating sense includes knowing how to fall safely, proper skate fit and safe skating, the specialist says.

Dr. Shirer is on the home economics staff of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the Texas A and M University System.

How To Fall How to fall safely is a major preventative of skating injuries. Dr. Shirer stresses.

Most reported injuries are broken bones - with the wrist leading the list. she says.

Fractured, sprained, strained or scraped ankles and elbows are also reported frequently.

Injuries stem, in part, from skater's attempts to break their falls by stiffening their arms, the specialist explains.

Orthopedists suggest that skaters bend their elbows as they fall in order to cushion the blow to the arm bones.

Also, aim for a soft spot on the ground to land on, if possible - and always try to

18 roll, not slide, to reduce the force of a fall, Dr. Shirer advises.

Proper Skate Fit When you buy roller skates, buy skates that fit well.

When buying for a child, choose the skates that fit his or her present shoe size, not a pair he'll "grow into."

Keep all skate parts tightened - and replace broken straps of strap-on skates immediately.

Safe Skating Prevention still is the best deterrent to accidents, the specialist emphasizes.

That means "safe skating."

Avoid "trick" skating, horseplay and pushing, lack of attention while skating and improper use of skates, such as going up and down stairs with skates on.

Also, check all skating surfaces carefully.

For sidewalk skating, avoid uneven or broken cement, branches and rocks.

Automobile seat belts are mandatory now on all cars, but — unfortunately — if you have young children, buckling up won't protect them.

"Infants and young children weighing less than 40 pounds cannot be protected by belts," says John P. Murphy, with the Emergency Medical Services Division of the Texas Department of Health. "Because a child's bones are soft, an adult belt can cause internal injuries in a collision.

"Nor are children safe when sitting in an adult's lap. The force of a collision, even at low speeds, can tear a child from the person holding him or her. If the adult is not wearing a seat belt, the child can be crushed between the adult's body and the dashboard or the front seat."

Murphy said a belt around a child sitting in an adult's lap can inflict critical internal injuries because the weight of the adult, greatly increased by the crash force, will press into the child's body.

Statistics for 1978, the latest year available from the Texas Department of Public Safety, show that 75 children ranging in ages up to four years old, died in Texas automobile accidents.

For the same year, 5,595 were injured. Of the 50,000 persons who lost their lives on the nation's highways in 1978, some 900 were child passengers under the age of five.

Children's car seats have been in use for many years, but until recently their purpose was to keep the child confined and elevated for a better view rather than for protection. Today, however, many crashtested restraining devices, both seats and harnesses, are available.

Basically, there are three types: the child safety seat, the shield restraint, and the simple harness.

The child safety seat has a five-point harness that cinches the child across the waist, between the legs and over the shoulder. The automobile safety belt secures the seat in place.

Some models have anchoring straps at the top to keep the seat from toppling forward or sideays in an accident.

Parents should follow the manufacturer's instructions for anchoring them to the car.

"The shield restraint is a simplier device," ex-

plains Murphy, "But a determined youngster may eventually work his way out of it. The child is protected in the front by the padded shield, and this is secured to the car by the seat belt."

A child harness is a restraint that holds a youthful passenger to the car's seat without a special child seat. This allows more freedom of movement, but provides less side protection.

All child restraints offer the best protection when they are placed in the middle of the rear seat.

Generally, the safety seat, the child restraint, and the simple harness should be used when the baby reaches 20 pounds, or can sit up alone. For infants up to nine months, it's best to use a rearward facing infant carrier especially designed for automobiles. The carriers contain a safety harness in them and are held firmly in place by the seat belt.

At the age of five, most children are ready to use an adult safety belt.

"Shoulder belts should never be used if they cut across the child's neck or face," emphasized Murphy.

"Safety restraints should be used every time the child is in the car, not merely on long trips.

Statistics show that the majority of accidents happen close to home. All passengers must be belted in, both for their own protection and for the sake of others in the car. Unbelted passengers can injure children," he said.

To cure a toothache, the ancient Egyptians practiced cutting up a mouse and putting its warm body over the

aching tooth.

"By studying the historical aspects of dentistry, we can appreciate the progress that has been made in dental science over the centuries through present times," says Carlos Lozano, D.D.S., chief of the Bureau of Dental Health of the Texas Department of Health.

"For example, we have learned that eating habits have a direct influence on dental health.

Dental disease begins when a chemical interaction occurs between

bacteria and carbohydrates (sugars and starches). Organized groups of bacteria, called plaque, live on the surfaces of the teeth. In the presence of plaque, acids are formed by the bacteria from refined carboh y -dratesinhdet.Th more frequently sweets are eaten and the plaque is not removed, the more frequently these acid attacks occur."

The constant presence of acid on the teeth causes the loss of the hard mineral sub-

stances. After this is re-

peated several times, a hole or cavity results, and this may eventually destroy the tooth, said Dr. Lozano.

Sticky items which remain in the mouth for some time after eating increase the chances of dental disease. "Common retentive foods include candy, cookies, crackers, cereals, pastas and breads," said Dr. Lozano.

"Foods that don't appear to be sticky but which are still retentive include cough drops, breath mints, sugared guin and soft drinks.

20 Scientific studies have shown that the frequency of consuming high-carbo­ hydrate foods affects dental disease, more than the amount consumed.

Each time you eat car­ bohydrates, particularly refined sugars, the plaque triggers the imme­ diate release of acids.

"Thus, from the stand­ point of dental health, it would be comparatively safer to eat a large quan­ tity of sugar all at once and be done with it than to eat teaspoonsful of sugar every half hour.

What I'm really trying to point out is that you should stay away from such items as hard can­ dies and mints that you can suck on for a' long time," Dr. Lozano em­ phasized.

The consumption of snacks, especially among children, plays a major role in the development of dental disease. Deter­ mining how and what a child snacks is extremely important.

"Ask yourself ques­ tions, like does my child sip a soda pop for an hour while watching televi­ sion, or is it consumed in a short time?'' Dr. Lozano said. "Snack items which are chewed or drunk are less harmful to the teeth than those which are sipped or sucked."

Some valuable non-re­ -, tentive snacks don't con­ . tain fermentable, usable sugar or starch for the bacteria · to react on. · These include meats, · cheeses, eggs, olives, pickles, fresh fruits or vegetables, popcorn and peanuts. Somenon-harm-

ful snacks also contain few nutrients. These in­ clude sugarless gums and sugarless or low­ sugar soft drinks. · 'The use of the term 'dietetic' does not, in itself. mean that the prod­ uct is free from carbo­ hydrates," warned Dr. Lozano. "Some 'dietetic' drinks and other food products contain sub­ stantial amounts of sugar and starches."

The food selections made by a child are in­ fluenced by many fac­ tors. In most households, the mother is generally responsible for all the food purchases. Her knowledge of nutrition, therefore, greatly affects the chilďs eating habits. "But having a can­ dy dish, cookie jar or soft drinks within the child's reach can limit the mother's control over his snacking habits," Dr. Lozano said.

Dr. Lozano added that good nutritior. is just one factor in good dental care, and stressed the im­ portance of flossing and brushing. He said remov­ ing or disrupting plaque by flossing and brushing daily will not give the acids an opportunity to form, and thus will re­ duce the chances of in­ jury to the teeth.

He added that dental education is helping cut down on the number of cavities in children. The Tattletooth Program, de­ veloped by the State Health Department un­ der a federal grant, was implemented in 1976-77.

Tattletooth provides ac­ tivities which motivate

students to make changes necessary for positive dental health. To capture student interest, the program takes a light­ hearted approach to the serious problem of dental disease.

Where there's smoke there's fire - and prob­ ably some poisonous gases as well.

One of the chief con­ tributors to the toxic fumes are the variety of plastic materials found in homes and businesses, says John P. Murphy of the Emergency Medical Services Division of the Texas Department of Health.

They are expected to be a factor in the pro­ jected deaths of 428 Tex­ ans to fire-related causes this year. In addition, an­ nual fire losses cost Tex­ ans some $1.5 billion. Un­ fortunatelv. many of these fires. and deaths traditionally come dur­ ing the holiday season, said Murphy.

"We are using a lot of synthetic materials, such as plastic pipe, in home construction and also are filling our residences with furnishings covered with plastic," he said.

"All synthetic mator­ i al s such as poly­ urethane, polystyrene, and polyvinal chloride give off toxic gases when burned and some burn so rapidly they are almost explosive. For example, a very common type of material used in plastic pipe gives off significant amounts ofhydrogen cya­ nide gas when burned."

Murphy said a story in a medical journal claimed that foam pad­ ding in one office chair

can give off enough toxic fumes during a fire to kill everyone in a room in less than a minute. · 'It gets kind of scary when you think that we use foam rubber materials for mat­ tresses. as padding under our rugs. and as padding in our chairs and sofas." he said. "And most of our drapes. rugs, carpeting and upholster­ ing is made from poly­ ester materials."

Murphy says that the majority of victims who die in fires are not burned to death, but ac­ tually die from what we call smoke inhalation, or carbon monoxide poison­ ing. He said a better term might be "inhalation of toxic products" because many times victims die from a combination of carbon monoxide and other toxic gases.

"In any case," Murphy stressed, ''We need to install smoke alarms in our homes. Most people think they will smell smoke and wake up, but they forget a bout the toxic gases."

Murphy said smoke alarms should be ap­ proved by United Under­ wr1ters Laboratories, the independent testing agency. He said the num­ ber of smoke alarms needed depends upon the layout and size of the home, but usually two or three are suggested for a minimum. Take sestry Dorothy Valkovi a Martha Harbortova pokraCuji dobfe; pokud se tyke sestry Marie Blanafove, svoji pfitomnosti ye schazi nejlepe dokazala, ze nejhorgi pfekonala a je opet ye svem Upfimne gratulujeme, pokraeujte tak dal! Sestra Marcella M. Kleprlikova pfeeetla dopis, kted obdriela od sestry Dresslerove, ve kterem ji dekovala za poslan9 pozdrav ze sjezdu a projeven9 zajem o jeji zdravotni sta y, jako i navgtevu v nemocnici a dodala, Ze take sestra Mildred Strobelova se citi lepe-, ale do schhze se neodvaiila pfijit. Sestra Julia Sefeikova toho Casu se nachazi v nemocnici na pozorovani, nic nebylo oznameno.

Sestra Henrietta A. Kalmusovi podekovala vgem za bohat9 pfispevek do kuchyne, oznamila, ze je vie pfipraveno, jako obyeejne. Bratr William J. Mares, mistopfedseda fadu, podrobne informoval o finanenim stavu zabavniho v9boru a oznamil co vygetfil ohledne zakoupeni nove sady pro spoleCenskou hru. Byly mu nabidnuty tfi soupravy v raznem provedeni a cenove odligne. Po kratke debate jsme se rozhodli pro cenove prostfedni nabidku, na gim poiadavkiim pine vyhovujici. Pfislu gn9 navrh podala sestra Viola Fajkusova, podporovala

sestra Evelyn Matulova.

Pfedseda fadu, bratr Emil E. Matula, oznimil v9sledek jednini s tiskafskou firmou pro tisknuti Vestniku.

Kritce po ukoneeni na geho sjezdu. zaslechl jsem rozhovor nekter9ch nagich Menu. Pochvalovali si jak se jim u nas libilo a divili se, jak na g , poeetne pomerne malt' fad, neco takoveho mohl podniknout. Obdivovali velkou prici hlavnich pracovnikii, bratra Emila E. Matuly a Dominika Netka s pfipominkou, ie nyni si jiste odpoeinou a pfenechaji starost jin9m. V tom se ovgem velice m9lili. Jak bratr Emil E. Matula, tak i bratr Dominik Netek, ve sve Cinnosti nennavne pokrauji dale. Po zhodnoceni price v gech, kdo vypomohli na sjezdu k uspokojenemu v9sledku spoleeneho usili o zdar, doporueil, aby v9roCi nageho fidu, ktere pfipadi na den 17. bfezna, bylo vzpomenuto uspofidinim mengi oslavy pro Cleny nageho fadu.

Pokud pak jde o *Beta jubilea zaloieni nageho fadu, aby byla uspofadana oslava v girgim mefitku, spojena s podavanim pokrmii za cenu, ktera bude stanovena a aby k teto oslave byli pozvani ten ufednici Hlavni fifadovny a jini Clenove. Ze elenu, narozenych v mesici srpnu, byl pfitomen pouze bratr Alfred Kalmus, kteremu jsme zazpivali piseti "Happy Birthday," pogratulovali mu a pak spoleene jsme se veselili pri pochutnavani si na bohate prostfenem stolu s mnoha dobrotinami.

Ochrtenu za pfitotnnost ye schUzi obdrieli prvni odmenu bratr Albin Popp, druhou bratr Franti gek Mazae.

Pisatel byl nejakY pan Oldfich Bufiata z Prahy ktery hledal elenove rodin p. Tomage Skrabanka a p.

Josefa Buriaty, ie by chtel si dopinit rodoktnen a iadal jejich adresy. Tedy jsem nejdfive volala na pi. Miladu-Skrabankovou Thaxtonovou a jelikoi jsem se ji nedovolala, tak jsem mluvila s jeji snachou a tome ona fekla, Ze pi. Milada odegla na veenost nekdy v kvetnu letos, col me opravdu pfekvapilo. Sla tedy za svou sestrou pi. Olgou Krutilkovou brzy.

Nedavno se navratila z nav gtevy do Csl. a nic se ji nepfihodilo ai nyni a to doma--jak ui to byva! Litujeme ji a piejeme brzke uzdraveni a doufame, ze jii vice takoveho negtesti se ji nepfihodi.

Slygela jsem, ye v enniske nemocnici jest vaIne nemocna pi. Mary Laiova byvala Bobalikova, coi jsme take neradi slygeli, neb p zname od detstvi a pfali bychom ji filevu v jejim negtesti. Take mile pi. Mary Pavey z Ft. Worth pfeji hodne zdravi a vge dobre, aby brzy byla zas jako dfive.

Vzpominali jsme na krajanY ve West, Tx., a jejich oslavu Westfest, ktera se konala v sobotu a nedeli 30. a 31. srpna.

Jeho manIelka (bYvala Anna Dlabajova) zesnula v 1979.Pohfeb byl z kaple Sander's z kostela sv. Jana na hfbitov sv. Josefa. Zanechava nekolik netefi a synovcii. Necht' je mu zeme lehka.

1. In Czech, the accent is invarion the first syllable: PRA-ce, SKA kat, SKO-la.

2. In the case of 3 or more syllables, there is a secondary accent on the 3rd syllable: PRA-co •A-ti, VZDE-li-VA-ti ,ZA-palo-VA-ti.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word following, and are always accepted: Do Prahy (doprahy), po voila (P0%vine) 4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant v, z, s, k — it must be joined in a single sound with the word following K VAM (KVAM not KE YAM): V Novem Yorku (not ye Novem Yorku).

5. Before other groups of consonants these prepositions are

said in full and accented: VE stisedu, KE mne, SE 'anon, ZE 4koly.

6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with the same sourid: VE Vidni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE The reason for this is because double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech: (An na, cennS). A double vy or double OE are not pronounceable. However, in a word like nej-jemneig, the two j's are separated betauAe nej is a superlative prefix. More on superlatives later.

7. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to STRESS long vowels outside the first sylable. The length or shortness of a vowel has no bearing on the stress.

8 Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech — its "musica/ness") that is the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, Is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above three languages.

The voice does not rise to as high a pitch, nor does it fall low as readily as in the above language. may be said to be rather "flat" and monotone in character.

9. The outstanding feature of Czech speech is the contrast. between long and short vowels, alternating in succession, giving it a rather staccato character.
