Wednesday, August 20, 1980 Temple and Cameron High Schools each are still in need of instructors to teach the newly-formed Czech classes in those schools.

If you know of anyone who has a Czech-teaching capability and is interested in part time teaching in either of these schools, please have them contact the school personnel office immediately. *** Temple Junior College (TJC) will offer Czech classes at several levels during both the day and evening schools, again.

Chervenka. *** In our last Issue (August 13, 1980) we had printed an article about Dr. Henry Kolar. (on page 22); the article was sent to us by Br. John Stasa some time ago plus another article about Alois Slovacek, Jr. We appreciate the articles and regret that we could not print them sooner, however, better late than never as the saying goes. When you see the article (when we publish it) you will see that Mr. Alois Slovacek, Jr. is very well-known in Los Angeles, Ca. More power to our Czech-Moravian-Slovak musicians. No truer words were ever uttered: "Co tech, to musikantl" translated: "Wherever you find a Czech, you find a musician." * ** Last minute information: Television station KWTX (channel 10) took some pictures of the West Sokol gymnasts in practice session Thursday, August 14th and they are, tentatively, scheduled to be telecast from 12 to 12:30 at noon on the "Ten Acres" show conducted by Mr. Paul Gately Thursday, August 21st.

NEWSBRIEFS PAVELKA REUNION The 1980 annual Pavelka reunion will be held Sunday, August 31st at the SPJST Lodge No. 35, in Elk, Texas. LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD

Dear Readers, Lodge No. 6 Cottonwood held its regular monthly meeting Friday, August 8th. President Dobecka called the meeting to order and had youth members Robert Hykel and Darrell Uptmore lead the pledge to the American flag. Robert then recited the SPJST pledge.

The membership was asked to stand for a moment of silent respect to our departed Sister Jessie Lewis.

All officers were present and Brother Eddie Hykel reported twenty-six members and three guests, Sister Jeanette Reiger, Brother Barrett Ivy and Steve Dieterich present.

Sister Hykel was called on to read the minutes of the previous, meeting. They were approved as read.

All other officers gave their reports and they were in order.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schultz reported that the youth members presented their program at the rest home July 9th and will present another one August 13th. She announced all the categories that the youth entered and how they placed. There were several first place winners including the Beseda Group and Teen Group Talent, Tee of the Year Bobby Hykel, Junior of the Year Darrell Uptmor and also Lode: No. 6 won Youth Club of the Year it- District YAD. Sister Schultz reported on the picnic proceeds of the youth club; she presented a $100 check to the mother lodge to purchase tables

Wednesday, August 20, 1980 or chairs for the lodge. July 28th, the Teen Group danced the Ceska Beseda at Paul Quinn College. There were twelve youth members plus Brother and Sister Dobecka at Camp Val Verde. The youth members were asked to come help bake kolache and work at Westfest.

President Dobecka congratulated all the youth members who were winners at District III YAD and even those who did not place were considered winners because they all tried their best.

President Dobecka, at this time, took time out to thank everyone who in any way made the annual picnic a success.

To all those who worked, donated, or bought things and came out to visit: a special thank you was given to all.

Without all these wonderful people, we could not have had a successful picnic.

All the workers will be assigned to different shifts at Westfest. At this time we are, again, asking everyone's help.

We need all the sisters to come help bake bread and kolache. The brothers will set up the booth Thursday, August 28th. The youth members will work on their float the week of Westfest.

The $10 progressive prize was won by Jerry Mechell and the $5 progressive door prize was John Louis Koza; neither was present. The $2 door prize was won

by Brother L.B. Dobecka.

The next Board of Trustees' meeting will be held September 12th, at 8 p.m. and the Lodge No. 6 meeting will be held Sunday, September 14th, at 2:30 p.m.

asked about taking a bus to the State Royalty contest which will be held on Sept. 27 at Lodge 187, Round Rock. It was decided that those who plan to go will take their own cars and will be reimbursed for expenses. The same goes for those who attend the State Y AD which will be held in Temple August 24.

The door prizes were won by Mildred Steinke for the adult and Sondra Dieterich for the youth.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

After the meeting we were entertained with music provided by the Sundowners.

Dear Members and Guests: August 2nd, we had Country Combination, and, as always, they did a good job entertaining our dancing fans.

Everybody really is enjoying our new floor.

There has been much beautification added to our Lodge No. 74: new curtains and other fixtures were added to make our lodge more attractive. Thanks to Mildred Shmoldas; she had donated $100 worth of material and did the part of putting it up. She is also in charge of the games which take place every Thursday night; the proceeds of the games, as yoti- know,. go to the repair fund of the lodge. The mother lodge is Well-informed because all proceeds are presented to a group of members after each game so there wouldn't be any questions about the income.

We had several members saving aluminum cans and donating them to our mother lodge. They were Mr. and Mrs. James Wilcox, Mr. and Mrs. Huggie Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith also, contributed cans to help the lodge, which amounted to $91 for one month. Thanks to all of you who contributed so much to the mother lodge.

Our next project is to improve the parking. I have been informectit will be an expensive project. We are now doing real good; we have bigger crowds Coming to, our entertainment than we've ever had before for a long time. It really makes me feel good 41 see so many nice

We had the Boot Hill Band last night with a big crowd attending. We had at least 400 people who bought tickets to get in; many parents brought their small children so they could enjoy free skating and also dancing.

I want to thank Brother Jeff Moore from Crockett and Brother Huddleston of Palestine for encouraging their friends to join the SPJST. You really are

working for the Society and the lodge by letting your friends know about our insurance and kedge. I am mentioning these names so you can see these names in this report. Recently, they got several prospects and encouraged them to join.

There are many More who are helping out in this manner: that is really great of all of you. Thanks a lot for getting more people interested.

President Bob Bayer opened the regular meeting of Lodge No. 107 at 5 p.m., August 3, 1980.

Stephanie Burleson led the membership in the pledge of allegiance.

The roll call showed Vice President Purchis absent.

Minutes were read and approved and a treasurer's report was given.

New members included William Method Pavliska Jr. with additional insurance.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer gave a detailed report of youth activities.

District VII YAD was well-attended and the prize winners were divided evenly among the clubs represented.

Wendy Bayer from Lodge No. 107 was teen high point winner, and Trey Bielefeld was Junior point winner. Lodge No. 107's scrapbook was third place winner.

The dance was well-attended and a nice profit was realized from the ticket sales.

President Bayer reported he made a payment to the Supreme Lodge and gave a complete financial report.

The committee reported on the ceiling fans and action was tabled for the time being.

John Burleson, Billy Pavliska, Erich Bielefeld, Joe Bob Pavliska and President Bayer were appointed to serve on a committee to purchase or build a new cooler.

Correspondence from RVOS and District VII President Helen Pavelka was read and discussed. The consensus among the membership was that fall is too busy a time of the year to try to hold a District VII meeting.

Lori Hrna, our peanut festival representative, gave a detailed report of changes taking place in festival rules.

Diane Lyssy, District VII queen, will represent our lodge in the parade and also in the coronation.

Our lodge also has Roxanne Bayer, serving as a princess to Queen Tunaep and Jeff Pavliska is a prince acting as an escort to Alice Brumlow. I presume the readers will be hearing a lot about our festival because we will have several youth club members in the coronation.

Stacy Bielefeld, another of my granddaughters, will be a train bearer to the queen.

I also have to report that Mary Zidek, the wife of Ed Zidek, was in the hospital last week. We hope she improves and will be able to be out of the hospital soon.

We finally got our rains. It was beautiful, not too much wind, and the ponds and fields all are full and the pastures are greening out beautifully. It

was beginning to look rather bleak but a week of rain and then sunshine surely makes a difference. We are all so thankful that we did not get any stormy weather.

Dear Members: Even though Western Days was Hot, it was a success. The SPJST Booth at the park was busy from Friday night through Saturday evening.

We were able to get a quick shot of some of the workers while slicing barbecue and, before lunch was served, Sister Irene Helgren was caught assisting Bro. Oscar Helgren and Lodge President Leslie Gustafson going 90 miles an hour getting prepared for the lunch rush.

We were so pleased to have one of your youth named as the "Elgin Western Days Queen." Lodge member Tammy Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Daughtry was named as the 1980 'Miss Western Days' queen.

Tammy is a sophomore, member of El-Hi Band, member of Wildcat Flag Corps, Class Favorite, treasurer of Spanish Club and was sponsored by the University Savings and Loan Association. Congratulations Tammy!!

Old business was again discussed concerning the leasing of a building for SPJST functions.

We contacted two banks in Arlington and could not obtain a loan as an organizational loan. One person would be held personally responsible and have his assets tied up for three years. We thought this to be unreasonable.

The sun is shining bright today and all the fears of last week left everyone limp and most thankful of being spared to live through the horrible experience of hurricane Allen. In our hearts we feel sorry for the victims who have been stricken and had to leave their homes and return to devastated surroundings.

On account of the hurricane, our Saturday night dance was fairly attended, whoever came was on account that the threat of the hurricane was lifted and the scare was gone. Music was furnished by Donnie Wavra to entertain the guests. The Hosting Committee in charge was: Gus Urbanovsky holding the box office with his wife Ann at his side as usual. (Ann also serves on the Thursday night Social Committee from the beginning). Our faithful friends from Lodge No 65, Crosby, Brother Jerry and Sister Delores Prochazka quite often extend a helping hand to serve as hosts.

Both ladies wore long gowns.

Please take notice: Saturday, August 23, 1980, two orchestras will play in our Chandelier Ballroom from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.; the Texas Dutchmen will provide polka music and Claudy Martin with ballroom and mixed music will entertain you. The variety of music surely will satisfy our dancing guests. Call for reservations at 869-5767; the admission will be $3.50 per person. Our ballroom floor will be in first class condition.

The monthly lodge meeting, August 11th was fairly-attended with President Mildred Holeman presiding. Reports of all committees were favorable and accepted by the assembly.

Reported on the sick list were: Brother Albert Bristik who is still in Memorial Northwest Hospital in Room 113. Albert was one of our best lodge sales representatives of Lodge No. 88; his wife, Elenora is constantly at his side to comfort him. We miss you, Albert.

Brother Orlando Richards was released from St. Luke's Hospital, Thursday, August 7th after confinement of eight weeks. Orlando feels pretty good now, but takes treatments every week.

Brother Amos Kadlecek looks better now than he ever did before. Now he gave away the habit of smoking and eats all the good food his dear wife Della prepares for him every day. He looks like a new person. His brother, Ed Kadlecek, a very valuable member of Lodge No. 88, is doing great. Ed looks better now than he ever did; his wife, Louise is taking good care of him also. We're so glad to see all these members doing well.

"Fraternalism Insures Togetherness"

English play "Hot Water" will have to be postponed for several serious reasons, but they are not giving up and will try later in the fall if, in any way, possible.

About the scheduled Czech play - there was no report. Director Rose Sicner is in charge and the Czech play was supposed to be presented this fall. If there will be any news, I will report them later.

Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg reported on the youth activities which she presents at every meeting very well. The youth meetings will be held every first Thursday of the month. She also commented on the work Mary Schenburn does with the youth in craft and ceramic classes each Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A showing of completed articles made by the youth members will be displayed Thursday, August 21st; you will be able to see all of these at the Thursday night social and see what our youth accomplished.

It is very funny how we take things for granted. We even overlook work when there is work done that is needed, badly.

Sister President Mildred Holeman brought to our attention the nice and freshly painted lawn furniture on our picnic grounds, the wrought iron furniture was painted by our two devoted members, Naomi and Arnold Spencer.

Without being asked, they just went at it and did it. The two do a lot of odd jobs around the lodge without being asked, especially, Arnold who loves to paint anything needing painting. He gets right to it; that's Arnold!

Sister Pearl Hanka, president of the Birthday Club, was proud as a peacock reporting on the activity of the Birthday Club and thanked everyone for any cooperation during our Homecoming Day. Czech Instructor W.E. Souchek, at the Houston University, was a guest at our meeting with his lovely wife Alice. He gave us the true picture of the Czech classes to open in the fall term 1980. Mr. W.E. Souchek's intbrmation about the Czech classes were appreciated and enjoyed because he is a special speaker and can hold everyone's attention.

"Happy Birthday" song rang out from the assembly to all the August celebrants.

Four wedding anniversaries were announced for: Bill and Pat Neskorik, 17 years; Emil and Emilie Bily, 40; and Bob and Margaret Allbritton, 14. These three couples donated the refreshments to go with the delicious sandwiches prepared

by Annie Vala with the help of Joe Knapick; also, Jerry and Willie Mae Ermis are marking their 25th silver anniversary. Last month's refreshments, after the meeting, were donated by Jack

Dear Members: President Henry Linhart called our regular monthly meeting to order Sunday, August 3rd, at 2:07 p.m.

There were seventy-nine members and two visitors present. We were happy to welcome Sister Evelyn Mikeska, District V sales representative, and Brother Richard Wahlberg, District V youth counselor. Thanks for coming out and giving us a little pep talk. Brother Wahlberg publicly wanted to thank one tine couple who did so much to help the youth members at District V Youth Achievement Day. Thanks to Henrietta and Eugene Veselka.

Lodge No. 142 was well-represented at YAD. We had fourteen entries and twelve awards. We also had an Individual Talent entry this year.

Congratulations to Keith Kieschnick, in the 6 through 9 age group; he won first place with his song.

At our adult meeting, our youth displayed their craft entries. An auction was then held for the Orange cake by Karen Jochen, which was bought by Sister Millie Linhart for $35. Betty Stein's 7-UP cake was auctioned off and Mr. James Pomikal from Sealy got it for $24. This will help our youth club.

Thanks for your generosity.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, MUSEUM

Dear Members: Recently, I had a good friend and member tell me: "I have noticed you asking for a "Go Devil Cultivator" for the museum, just what does a Go Devil cultivator look like?" Not having any pictures of it I searched some old Sears catalogs and found a picture of it. Some of these fine old tools had wood slides and may be rotted out by now, I can always replace the rotted wood and rebuild it, just if I could get the steel parts; I even have a seat that I could put on it. I hope someone can give us one of these old pioneer tools; it would help to round out our Pioneer tool display.

Wa also need a small Windmill preferrably steel, badly. What we need is the head, wheel and vane, we can build the stand; it can be either for a wood tower or steel, it has to be not larger than a 5-ft. wheel; we have an eight and a half foot ceiling where it will go. A windmill would also help us build a good pioneer farm display. If you have one that you don't need, even if the wheel is damaged, please let us know and we will pick it up.

We also need an old-fashioned wood ice box a small size would be preferred to round out our pioneer kitchen; most of these ice boxes held up to a 75--pound piece of ice; some were loaded from the top and others from the front of the ice box.

All these, when received, will be reconditioned before being displayed and each item will carry a card in both Czech and English languages showing who donated the item and it will advertise you as a donor forever. Your help to make the SPJST museum (your museum outstanding) is appreciated.

Now to tell you of the progress we are making in the move into the basement: the hole for the steps is open, most of the studding is in place and the wall board is now being applied; it will be something that will make every SPJST member proud of the LAM division. We will have room to make our displays outstanding.

To the many donors who have already

donated to the Library, Archives and Museum I want to sincerely thank you for its your fine donations that have made our museum what it is and what it will be when we get it completed in the move to the basement. As I watch the progress in the work and see the room we will have I just swell with pride.

In conclusion I still need a small old-dilapidated building from which I can get enough old weather-worn lumber to build a small blacksmith shop 6 feet wide by 8 feet long and 6 and a half feet high; I promise to make a nice sign and place it on the blacksmith shop with the name of the donor. For instance if John Jones donates the material for the blacksmith shop I will make a sign "John Jones Blacksmith Shop" and this will be placed right over the entrance of the shop and that will remain there forever, isn't that worth it? If you have any of these important items please let us hear from you and we will advise you when we can pick it up.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: On August 10 our regular monthly meeting was held at 2 p.m. with two officers and several member couples absent attending an out-of-state Polka Festival and one missing mother, Martha Durham was watching son Charles playing baseball in a State Tournament.

Haven't heard who won yet. Absentees notwithstanding, all of us stay-at-homes dutifully conducted business as usual and enjoyed supper afterwards.

Minnie and Robert Ruzicka told of a beautiful wedding on the shore of Lake Brownwood. Their grandson, Scott Burkhalter, son of Lonnie and Gladys (Ruzicka) Burkhalter was married to Cathy Greenwood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Greenwood at the unusual wedding site.

Another noteworthy occasion will take plaee this month. Wednesday, the 13th, Siste r Helen Zich celebrated her 98th birthday; possibly our oldest member; she is extended very special birthday wishes for many blessings in the future.

It was good news to learn that Bennie Hundle finally got her shoe on, which, means that she has overcome the injury of her mower accident. Altina Farek spent some time in NorthweSt Hospital recently and we regretted hearing of the death of Gladys Reid, reported ill last month.

Dear Members and Friends: I did not get to attend the meeting yesterday because I have been in the hospital all week and hope to get released tomorrow; it's hard to believe with all this heat wave to get pneumonia.

I did get a report that the meeting was called to order by our vice-president, Brother Don Steinman.

All reports were approved as read.

Three new members, Mrs. Edith Hays, Mr. A.G. Hays and his wife Marsha Hays were approved.

Our lodge will host the District III meeting, Sunday, September 28th.

The youth club members who attended the Val Verde Camp reported they had a wonderful time; little Michael Mason said, it was the best time he ever had in his life. That is saying a lot for all who made this possible.

Sister Carrie Bell Milan was the door prize recipient.

Brother Joe and Sister Agnes Merlick spent two wonderful weeks in Miami,

Florida with their daughter Betty and husband Arno Mueller and family.

Our last country-western dance was a full house and Jerry Max Lane will be back Saturday, September 6th.

While laying here I kept close watch on Hurricane Allen and was happy it changed its course.

I would like to take a moment to thank many of you for your prayers and get-well wishes. I know they helped.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, September 14, at 3 p.m.

Dear Readers and Editor: Monday at 2 p.m., we received six hundredths of an inch in a shower; it dropped the temperature from 100 degrees to 80 degrees.

For some time we all planned to make a visit to my dear brother-in-law Poboril, who resides by himself, in the Seaton Community near Sefcikville.

Thursday at 8 a.m., we set out in a Cadillac and made the visit. The trip was through Round Rock, Taylor, Granger, Rogers and Red Ranger, where one and half miles to the northwest, my nephew Jos. Blazek is farming.

We arrived at 9 a.m. and found him at home, it was a surprise for him. The maize and corn was in the field waiting to be harvested. I did not see Joe since 16 April 1963 when I attended the funeral of his father, Josef Blazek. He was born 27 July 1888 in Williamson County on a farm near Taylor. I remember when Jos. A. Blazek was born in December, 1912 at Rosenberg, Texas. In December, 1913, the Blazeks moved on the 45-acre farm and the only son Joe A. has been living with his parents all of his life.

His mother's maiden name was Agnes Poboril, the daughter of the late Frank and Marie Poboril. She was my late dear wife's older sister. She was born 15 November 1892. She died in July, 1979 at 1 her home.

Since his mother died he is by himself, except for three dogs and a mother cat with the little kittens. He said that he is lonely.

Our next stop was at the Red Ranger store. I noticed that there are some improvements made since I lived there, new buildings and owners. The Red Ranger Community started about 1910 when Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reznicek quit farming east of Seaton about three miles.

They found a location to build a house and store and some out-buildings (a barn and some other things). It was about two acres leased from Mr. Geistman. It was on the east side of the dirt route between Rogers and Zabcikville, but only two and half miles from Zabcikville; next to the Reznicek store Frank Fabian built a blacksmith shop and house.

On the west side of the road, there was another dirt route connecting String Town, Sefcikville and Seaton. The distance from the Reznicek store was about two thousand feet. To the north there was a John Zabcik's family renting a farm. On this corner there was a new schoolhouse built and a house for the teacher. My dear late wife attended the school at Seaton and then the Red Ranger School.Miss Cejnar was the first

At this present time all these buildings cannot be seen there anymore. The land is cultivated. Mr. Reznicek suffered with diabetes. He was a fine man and relative of the Poboril family.

For delivery of the supplies for their business, they had one pair of the best-looking horses in that community.

When Mr. Frank Poncik, from Holland, Texas, was elected Bell County Commissioner, he made many needed improvements. He turned the black dirt muddy roads to gravel roads. School children were transferred and bused to Rogers.

Mrs. Reznicek, the widow, sold this property in 1914 to Mr. and Mrs. Will Marek. Mrs. Marek's maiden name was Petrek. At that time Mr. Henry Jakubik was employed at Marekville, later the name was changed to Zabcikville. He married Miss Lesikar, the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lesikar, who were farming in the Seaton Community. At that time, the H. Jakubiks bought Marek's place. I have no data, but it happened after the World War I. Henry Jakubik's wife died. Her survivors are two children and her husband. Henry then remarried to the sister of his late wife.

Few years later, the Jakubiks sold their

property to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Marek, and moved on a farm where his two wives were born. Henry Jakubik, of Route 3, Temple, Texas, died 12 July 1965, at the age of 75. He was a member and president, for many years, of SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone. He was known by me since 1910. We were very close friends. He was sincere to all in his valuable service that he rendered for his friendship. He moved to Red Ranger Community about 1910 from Caldwell with his parents, brother and two sisters.

They were neighbors to Fr. Poboril's farm.

After Raymond Marek and his dear wife Louise bought the property from the Jakubiks, they moved it about half a mile to the south where the road crossing goes east to the community of Meeks, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Marek, the late president of the Supreme Lodge SPJST, for many years. Before he was elected financial-secretary, he owned and operated a country store in Meeks.

(In 1932 at the SPJST Convention in Ennis, Texas, he was elected financialsecretary and later president). This new business location is in a better spot. The road from Rogers goes to Zabcikville in a northerly direction.

When Mr, Raymond Marek and his wife passed away, this property was taken over by their daughter Louise, who was married to Mr. Psencik who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Josef Psencik.

They emigrated from the old country Moravia, Czechoslovakia; also, about in 1910, they started farming at the Oscar Community. Since Mr. Psencik passed away, Mrs. Louise Psencik, remarried; her husband's name is Jerry Zavodny.

Everything has changed since I was there about 3 or 4 years ago with the Hubers.

The building is rebuilt, enlarged and equipped to give better service to their customers. It was a pleasure to meet these new owners. The father and grandfather of this middle-aged Mr. Zavodny was known by me since 1907.

They have been farming in the Zabcikville Community. They rented a farm in those days from Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bartek. It joined the Camp Creek.

While we were talking, another 60-yearold-man came and introduced himself and shook hands with me and said: "My name is Coufal and my father ginned cotton with you when you had a cotton gin at Holland in Bell County from 1934 to 1936." My son-in-law John Huber made an order for some hamburgers and, while talking, the young lady clerk had it ready made for us. They were delicious. We are all wishing good health and prosperity in your enterprise.

Mrs. Zavodny said that they are residing

16 my letters in the Vestnik and that her sister, Bernice Sebek, who is a member of Lodge No. 24 in Cyclone also makes reports from that lodge. Lodge No. 24 and Lodge No. 47 are the most progressive lodges in District II. I am interested in reading the news from these lodges and many others where I know the members of the SPJST, Sokol, KJT, KJZT, RVOS, SVPS, and WOW, plus many other organizations.

From Red Ranger we went to Zabcikville. There was no change since I passed through three years ago. Frank Poboril, age 82, (single man) is residing by himself in the Seaton Community. We made a surprise visit. He is also in good health. Frank is my brother-in-law. He is still able to cook for himself and complains of some pain in his legs. His daughter Lillie, and Joe L. Sefcik attend to his needs. Mr. Sefcik was notified that we are coming to take care of the Frank Poboril business. The Sefciks are satisfied with harvesting sorghum crop: three thousand pounds per acre and sold 100 pounds for $5.40.

The Sefcik and Poboril relationship continue to the fourth generation.

Mr. Jos. Sefcik is a supervisor of the National Cemetery at Seaton, Texas. It is kept in good order and is enlarged every few years. I am enclosing a picture of the Czech-Moravian Brethren Church at Seaton. This is the second church built on the Josef Sefcik farm. The first one was located in front of the cemetery; it was too small to serve the growing church membership; now it is on the corner of the highway that goes from Temple through Seaton to Zabcikville to Rosebud, and a road to Rogers.

After saying good-bye, we departed and made another stop in Temple at the Thomas Hardware. That was the last stop; at 2 p.m. we were back at home satisfied with all the visits we made. It may be the last visit I have made to Bell County, Texas. There are only a few persons living that I used to socialize with. When we returned home, the temperature was up to 100 degrees. We found everything ok.

Friday afternoon, August 1st, I had the honor to meet Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Nelson. They are good friends of the Hubers for many years (35). They came to make a visit. Mr. Nelsoii was a professor for many years in the University of Texas at Austin. His students were in the classes who studied United States law to become lawyers. He retired in May after the last semester.

The faculty board sponsored a banquet for him in his honor for his dedicated effort to his students and faculty of the

University of Texas. He was loved and respected by all who knew him.

Hurricane Allen originated in the Carribean and was classed as the second worst, larger, and most dangerous and furious hurricane. For the last few days the news media broadcasted the moving direction and the wind of 180 miles per hour. Allen hammered coastal areas with winds of 110 mph through the night of Saturday and swatted seaport cities with the highest tides in 60 years, but property damage, although widespread along the south coast, was not as extensive as predicted and no lives were reported lost.

Sunday, about 5 p.m., it was downgraded to a tropical storm when winds dropped to 60 mph. The National Weather Service reported the storm's center was over Mexico, about 60 miles west-northwest of Laredo late Sunday night. Nearly 200,000 people had fled from a 400-mile stretch of Texas coastline after Allen killed at least eighty-seven people as it crossed the Carribean.

The Johnny and Elsie Stasa's family moved out Friday afternoon, August 8th, and the families of Roy and Ann and the Patrick and Georgie Peal moved out at mid-night (Friday-Saturday). The Hubers had a telephone, communication with Emil and Olga Mokry.

Sunday morning we get the good news that our homes were not damaged, but some streets were flooded with water.

Here in Austin when I was listening to the KKIK Radio Station from 12 to 1 p.m. "West Polka Show", it rained slowly, but only one hour. The storm cloud was near our home and made some damage in our neighborhood.

It is now Monday morning with cloudy skies and it may rain. We are looking for some rain, at least 3 or 4 inches of slow rain. We had planned that I will be back in my home at Corpus Christi, August 10th, but Hurricane Allen postponed it to August 16th, if the weather and other things permit.

I wish I could see more letters from SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi; also more letters about the State XXIII Convention in the Czech Section of the Vestnik. There are members of this Society who would appreciate the important information.

DALLAS CIRCLE OF CZECH WOMEN

Pour yourself a cup of coffee; you may need a pot full before you finish reading this lengthy letter. Since the Circle did not meet in July, this letter will cover two months news. Sure has been a hot summer. Everyone is hoping we get some of the rain due to hurricane Allen.

The Circle of Czech Women met August 7 at 10:30 a.m. President A. Zvolanek called the meeting to order.

After the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag, a few moments of silence was observed in memory of Sister Mary Toberny who passed away last month.

Sister Toberny was a charter member of the Circle and active almost to the end, (until she got too sick to attend). She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Sincere sympathy is expressed to her family.

Treasurer A. Vlk gave a good financial report. Recording Secretary J. Kankrlik read the minutes which were approved as read. Corresponding Secretary L. Pavelka read "thank-you" notes for gifts received from Sisters L. Elsik, A. Zvolanek, M. Dujka, and A. Roberts for flowers. It was nice of Sister V. Kohn to visit and deliver the gifts and flowers to Sisters Dujka, Elsik, and Roberts. Janie Hulovec and Harriet Roberts thanked the Circle for the card sent them. A nice letter was read from Sister F. Konakovsky from Taylor. We are always happy to hear from her and hope her eye problem is corrected soon. Come see us sometimes, Fannie. Sister A. Zvolanek sent greetings from Yugoslavia: Sister M. Sebestik, who is in charge of sending get-well and other cards while Sister B. Kalich is on vacation, reported that she sent 15 cards in June and July.

Sister M. Malooly sent birthday greetings to the following August birthday sisters: A. Het-trial, A. Hticek, L. Polansky, and A. Zvolanek. Happy Birthday was sung to them, Sisters on the sick list are L. Elsik and A. Noska.

Frank Henzen, husband of Sister F. Henzen, is seriously ill in Presbyterian Hospital, Frank Kankrlik, husband of Sister Josie, is in Doctors' Hospital, Miro Jurcik, husband of Sister Vlasta, is in Baylor Hospital, and Paul Dujka, husband of Sister Martha, is in Dallas Memorial Care Center. Sister R. Urban has recuperated after spending several days in the hospital. These sisters are recuperating after a brief stay in the hospital: M. Dujka, A. Zvolanek, L. Elsik, and A. Roberts. Harriet Roberts, daughter of Sister Alice Roberts, also spent a few days in the hospital. She and I both had foot surgery. She won't be

Barbara Dybala and Helen Macik brought the "Generation to Generation" cookbooks to the meeting for the sisters who ordered one or more. The cookbooks are very nice. Sister E. Salac announced that August 21, 7 p.m. at Lodge No. 84, there will be an evening of good food and entertainment, all for only $3 ,s/ adults; $1.50 children under 12. Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra will furnish the music.

Sister M. Petrik and some members of her family flew to Las Vegas last month and did a little gambling - lost some and won some. Isn't that the way it usually happens? Sisters M. Bartek and B. Kalish are both vacationing in California. Sister Anne and Bob Zvolanek told what a wonderful welcome they received at the Czechoslovakian

Sister R. Kopecek's cousin, Joe Stepanek of Omaha, Nebraska, visited with her for a few days. Sisters, remember to bring at least 2 nice gifts to the September meeting; also the food you signed up for.

From The Head Of The Youth Dept STATE YAD - SUNDAY August 24th, 1980 To: All Concerned This year's State Youth Achievement Day (Talent, Arts and Crafts, and Beseda) promises to be another big day and milestone in the history of the Youth Department of the SPJST. If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or are in line before registration time is over. We are allowing more time for registration this year, but your cooperation is necessary because the people in charge of registration must then move on to other jobs. (The schedule for this day follows this report.)

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register. The lobby for the display is rather spacious where you will be able to wait with your craft until you are able to register. If you have a large craft or several crafts to enter, get your relatives or friends to help you ahead of time. We will again have large signs designating the various craft areas.

Contestants in talent are asked to announce their own selections, but not names, lodges, or districts. Remember that microphones will not hurt you so step right up so that you can be heard.

If possible, get your scrapbooks to your DYC or get them to the YAD during registration time.

We hope you and your club and your district are represented at this State YAD. Do not let them down. If you can't come, be sure to inform your DYC so that your alternate or second place winner may represent your district.

Breaks will be spaced according to number of participants in the contest.

Important reminder to all: Please read or re-read all rules concerning all competition. Refer to the current rule book (Revised June 1, 1978).

Letters From The Youth

Dear Members, July 29, I went to camp at Val Verde.

My leader was David Marburger. I enjoyed swimming and archery the most.

I want to thank District II for having an enjoyable camp. All of the junior campers from our lodge rode the Taylor bus.

We enjoyed riding the bus because we could visit with one another before and after camp.

August 3rd our youth club held their meeting. Door prizes were won by Kathy Biar and John Wuensche. We elected a telephone committee. Ellen Hejl was elected chairperson with Nicole Mohel as her helper.

August 10, I attended the District II meeting. It was rainy that day, so we went to the Howard Theater in Taylor to see "Wholly Moses" instead of outdoor sports that were planned for that day.

I want to thank Lodge No. 29 for hosting the meeting and Melvin Steger for taking all of the youth to the movies in the bus.

Dear Readers, August 5th about fifteen youth club members and four adults boarded the youth club bus and left for camp. The group arrived in time for supper and to be assigned to their cabins.

Everyone enjoyed swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, making craft items (weaved a pencilholder) and other activities. I really enjoyed camp and the good food the cooks prepared for us.

We had to leave camp Friday morning to come home before the storm hit our area.

My grandparents, aunt and cousins stayed with us during the storm and no one was hurt. We had a little damage to our house.

Potential producers of alcohol fuel in Texas are relocating in other states to take advantage of tax breaks and other credits, the chairman of a legislative subcommittee on energy said today.

State Rep. Dan Kubiak, D-Rockdale, urged the 67th Legislature to exempt gasohol from the State's nickel-pergallon excise tax, and said he expects several gasohol incentive bills to be introduced next session.

"Gasohol producers who had planned to locate in Texas have changed their plans because of red tape and lack of encouragement from our Legislature and state agencies," Kubiak said.

As examples, Kubiak cited: --A proposed 5 million gallon plant in the Hereford area now seeking a relocation site in New Mexico.

---A 20 million gallon plant originally planned for the Panhandle area but now under construction in Nebraska.

---The controversial Midwest Solvents, Inc. plant, once intended for Santa Rosa, Texas, presently under construction in Kansas.

"New Mexico has a 6.5 cents-pergallon excise tax exemption and Texas has none. The plant relocating there will be owned by Texas farmers who will transport their grain into New Mexico for gasohol production, thereby capitalizing on that state's tax breaks," he said.

Kubiak said even though Texas could lead the nation in alcohol production, virtually all alcohol blended in gasohol now sold in Texas is produced out of state.

"The revenues which could be generated by these plants through jobs and taxes on real estate and equipment would be three times greater than the revenues lost by fuel tax credits. Most important, domestic gasohol production is a means by which our own state could become less dependent on the foreign oil cartel."

Dr. George Ray McEachern, horticulturist for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&114 University System, said Texas pecans are currently experiencing, serious water shortage problems. He said the predicted harvest is already down about 40 percent in non-irrigated orchards and if the drouth continues for three mom: weeks harvest could be down as much as 80 percent.

Young trees have stopped growing and mature trees will have short crops of smaller-than-usual nuts. McEachern said trees growing in sandy or shallow soil are suffering the most. Young trees need a uniform soil moisture level during the growing season, from April to October.

Without question, irrigation is a must, and large trees that are producing need large volumes of water. He said large trees use over 100 gallons pet day in July and August.

Bearing trees should not be drouth-stressed. Important irrigation periods are early spring when growth begins, mid-summer when the nut develops and early fall As the kernel develops. A fall drouth can reduce the percentage of kernels significantly, McEachern said.

DRY WEATHER CALLS FOR SPECIAL LAWN CARE

Current severe heat and dry conditions pose many problems for homeowners, and lawn care during times of stress is one of the most difficult to deal with.

Dr. Richard L. Duble, turfgrass specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System, offers hope with some practical advice to help homeowners cope with lawns during the extreme weather conditions of this summer.

Where water is limited for lawn use, Duble suggests watering only when the lawn shows signs of stress, such as wilting or discoloration.

"When you can water, soak the law: about 3 or 4 inches deep to encourage: deep rooting, stronger plants. Ideally lawns should be watered early in tilt morning to incorporate any dew whicl might be present and to redua evaporative loss," he says.

When water is available, Duble recommends mowing at a height of 2V to 3 inches at 10 to 14 day intervals.

"If you cannot water the lawn mowing at a height of 3 to 4 inches and only when the lawn becomes unsightly is the best practice. Mowing at thi height will allow common St. August' and bermudagrass to mature • produce seed. The specialist also recommends little or no fertilizer during the summer months, and an active insect and disease control program to protect against further damage.

Texas Department of Health (TDH) Venereal Disease Control personnel must practice understanding with patients everyday.

They must be aware of the patients' need for confidentiality. Too, they must demonstrate insight regarding the need for human respect and straightforward communication. Staff priorities are not just related to "casefinding"— they want to help people.

The VD Control Program has been busy communicating with people about the extent of the VD problem. During the first six months of 1980, infectious syphilis cases increased by 14%. A total of 3,316 cases of syphilis were reported.

Gonorrhea, on the other hand, declined by 3%, in that only 38,124 cases were reported. This is compared to 39.150 cases of gonorrhea reported for the same period last year.

All health problems related to VD are handled discretely by TDH clinic staffs. For example, a married couple recently visited a public VD clinic. They were given a routine registration form to complete and a number— no names are called in the clinic. The husband, who was suffering with symptoms of VD, was directed to a laboratory technician for testing. The wife, who had no symptoms at the time, was seen by a public health ,nurse.

Following a 10-15 minute screening .;process for syphilis anO; gonorrhea, it was confirined that...they both had VD. EaCb=iaw a physician, who prescribed the appropriate: and made an.-appointment-

for a return visit. The purpose of this follow-up visit was to provide the patients with results of additional laboratory testing.

A staff counselor talked with the husband and wife separately. The counselor educated the patients about venereal disease. Another important duty of the counselor, however, was to insure that all sex partners of these t4wo people were informed of their risk of infection and that all partners received proper medical evaluation.

This is the process followed with every patient visiting a public clinic. They are confidentially examined and treated. Staff counselors talk to them about the diseases and how to avoid reinfection. They stress to the patient the importance of seeing that all sex partners are treated.

"The emphasis now in VD clinics is to motivate patients to inform their own' sex partners about their exposure to disease," said Harry Bernhardt. program manager at the AustinTravis County Health Department VD clinic. He added. We talk to patients about their health and answer their questions. We encourage them to care just as much about what happens to their untreated partners as they do about themselves."

Another counselor said, "We work with people of all ages." He shared an experience regarding a time when he had only the name and address of one female.

After he discovered that she was only 15 years old and that her father was home, he made an excuse and left. He contacted the girl later, upholding her right to confidentiality. Minors in the state of Texas may be examined and treated for venereal disease without parental consent.

The counselor added, "When we are trying to locate someone, we don't

disclose the reason we are looking for them. - Often the counselors may have only a first name or brief description of a person who may be infected. They visit bars or other places where a patient has frequented. Seldom do they visit places of work, and only sometimes do they visit homes. They attempt to reach persons at risk by telephone or confidential letter.

People are often angry when they learn that they may have VD. Counselors have to point out that this is not a shameful thing, but a health matter. People are told that they have been exposed to a venereal disease and a -test is required to see if infection has occurred.

Joe Webb, U.S. Public Health Advisor with the Infectious Disease Control Division of TDH stated, "About 4,000-5.000 people visit public VD clinics weekly in Texas."

Re had the following advice for those using the clinics: "Be sure to take all the medicine the doctor gives you. Patients sometimes take only half of the medicine, their symptoms disappear, and they give the remaining portion to their partner in an attempt to save him or her a trip to the clinic.

You need to take all your medicine— even if you have no remaining symptoms.

Also, medication for one type of venereal disease may not influence another type."

Webb suggested that the public should call to find out clinic hours. VD clinics sometimes have different hours on certain days or evening hours. Most VD clinics are listed in the telephone directory and may be located by contacting local health departments.
