From The Editor When you want to do a good thing, do it, don't hesitate.

Now is the time for goodness...re. member time won't wait.

When you want to say a kind word...or do a kindly deed.

Do it now, because you are...fulfilling a great need.

The world cries out for goodness... and yet it gets so little.

Because people forget to act...it ends up in the middle.

Do not keep good deeds in your mind...share them will all others.

Only in this way can you...make people close as brothers.

Sometimes it may seem rather hard...to smile instead of frown.

But if you do you will send your heart...up high instead of down.

So let the good things circulate...don't keep them deep inside.

Mankind needs your goodness...give it out with pride.

It has been and is a long, hot summer!

We certainly have had it in 1980.

Recently, some of the tree leaves are turning yellow prematurely and beginning to fall off, evidently, due to lack of water.

We, certainly, saw the evidence of this drought in our trip to the District IV YAD at Seymour Sunday, July 27th. At the District VI YAD in Victoria Sunday, July 20th, SYD Sister Dorothy Massey advised us that she was going to District V YAD in Houston July 27th and SL President Morris was going to District VII YAD in New Braunfels (we had three on the same date), so we decided to visit our faraway northwestern District IV. It was a long, hot trip, however, well-enjoyed and we found the same type of natural and spontaneous friendliness and fraternalism that is so prevalent in our SPJST Society. Of course, District IV is rather strung-out with large distances between lodges and does not number as many members as our other districts and the attendance, quite naturally, was rather small, however, we must remember that the inflation and price: of motor fuel plays a part in this aspect of our Society. DYC Mary Haisler will have her report in very soon. Now the youth have camp activities ahead of them; enjoy it kiddoes, school will be beckoning you before long! ***

Your editor was invited to a TV, radio and newspaper press party, in conjunction with the 1981 American

Wednesday, August 6, 1980 Sokol National Slet to be held in Fort Worth, Texas next year.

I took time off to attend and was rather impressed with the work of SPJST Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth and Sokol Fort Worth where the affair took place. If space allows, we will try to publish an article about it.

The dates of the ASO National Slet, for our members planning groups and committees are: June 24-27, 1981 in Fort Worth, Texas. We will publish the program (tentative schedule) at a later date.

We regret there were some omissions in some letters in the last issue of Vestnik.

We will explain how that happened, later.

In Sister Olexa's letter, page 3, second paragraph the word Lot was omitted.

The sentence should have read: The ballroom floor is finished, but if it will be abused with spills of all kinds and •. . 'quids, then it will not be long and the oor will be in the same condition. ne word can certainly change the meaning of a statement!

At the bottom of column 2, same page the paragraph was completely omitted. It read: The work on the swimming pool is progressing slowly; the pool is peppery Tdry, with no water in it, and it seems Ithere won't be any swimming for the ; youngsters this season; and, of course, the youngsters miss it.

MOGONYE REUNION

VYVIAL REUNION

The annual Mogonye reunion will be held Sunday, August 10, 1980 at the Elgin SPJST Hall. Each family should bring their favorite dish for a pot luck noon meal feast. Iced tea and coffee will be provided; also, bring "white elephant" gifts for the afternoon games.

The second annual Vyvial reunion will be held Sunday, August 10th, 1980 at the American Legion Hall in Rosenberg, Texas; may it be that all of the relatives pack a covered dish and come spend a day with us?

Dear Members and Friends: President Henry Brietkruetz Sr. called the regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 35, Elk to order July 13 at 3 p.m. Ronald Steinke, flag bearer, led in the pledge of allegiance.

We had several visitors, Evelyn Bunkowski, Tillie Matus, Willie Thun, Gary Niemeyer, and Jerry Holle & Chris.

The minutes were read by Secretary Albert Banik. He also read correspondence received from the family of Bertha Jander, and the family ofJames Holder.

The treasurer's report was given by Henry Breitkruetz Jr. Rosemarie Banik gave the youth club report. She had. on disola y . the crown won by Charlotte Banik as "Miss SPJST." This is very much an honor for Lodge ' 35. Congratulations Charlotte.

Sister Rosemarie stated that we also had a .district king and duke, Eddie Banik and Jason Brown. She then recognized our 1st place winners at Y.A.D. They were Richard Burney, Melissa Burney, and Pam Thun. The youth club has made plans for several activities. They are looking forward to going to camp.

The July birthdays, who were recognized, were, Daniel and Jeff Pechacek, Shannon Dulock, Jana and Kathy Breitkruetz, and Henry Breitkruetz Sr. Hope all had a Happy Birthday.

Committee reports were given by Peggy Dieterich for kitchen, Johnny Stuchly for refreshments and Albert Banik for entertainment. Rudolf Vicha gave the building chairman report.

New members accepted were Charles R. Zost, Kenneth Wayne Zost and James Elsworth ' Stead III. Mary Norman had a paid-up certificate.

Under old business, it was voted to reimburse the people who took their cars to the Y.A.D. at Burleson since a charter bus was not able to be attained.

play dominoes and other games. Bring your dominoes and games. Let's all attend and join in honoring these sisters and brothers.

I would like to remind everyone about all the activities the youth will have these next few weeks. First, the District II meeting and funday for the youth members will be held Sunday, August 10th at Lodge No. 29, Taylor. Sunday, August 24th, our craft winners will participate in State YAD in Temple.

Saturday, September 27th, the State Royalty will be held at Lodge No. 187, Round Rock and Queen Kelli Andel with her Duchess Diane Dorner will compete.

Let's all try to attend these functions and support our youth members.

I also want to thank Amos Electric for donating the ceiling fan to our youth club which is one of the prizes to be given away at the August 17th function. There is still time to buy tickets for this fan, comforter, and the $25 to be given away; just contact any youth member.

Our next meeting will be held August 13th, at 8 p.m. We will have an ice-cream social afterwards. Ladies please bring a freezer of ice cream or a cake.

Here is the information on our 50-year SPJST membership recipient presentations event, which will be held Sunday, August 17th. The program will start at 3 p.m. SL Financial Secretary Leonard Mikeska will present the pins to our honorees, namely, Sisters Bessie Chudej, Lillie Cook, Bertha Haisler, Gardina Schiller, Sydonie Skrabanek, Viola Tyroch, Rosie Vasek, Juanita Wychopen and Brothers Wm. Chudej and L.B. Haisler. The honorees will be receiving personal letters inviting them, so, if for some reason you do not receive one, it will he due to the:niail service, so be sure and attend. There will be a covered dish meal starting about 4:30 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring enough food for your family, after which we will socialize and

Correspondence to members from Arnold Peterson was read extending his appreciation for being elected to represent our lodge at the XXIII Convention in San Antonio.

Plans are currently being made for our first year anniversary, which will be held September 21st. More details will be forthcoming at the August meeting.

Door prize was not given away, therefore, the August meeting door prize will be $20; courtesy tickets were won Aileen Leschber.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at the August meeting. The monthly meetings are scheduled for the third Sunday of each month at 4 p.m., followed by a covered dish supper.

are so well-behaved. We had a member from Round Rock who is a member of that lodge. I am sorry but I forget her name. As usual, we have people attending our activities from faraway places. We had guests from Louisiana; they stated that we have something that they don't have in Louisiana: a family affair society like ours where youngsters have free entertainment from age 1 through 14.

Our regular monthly meeting will take place Monday, August 11th, at 7:30 p.m. Come and take interest in what is going on because you will be a lot of help to the lodge by attending.

Come to our game nights every Thursday, at 7:30 p.m.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: The Silvertones really did a good job of entertaining our dancing fans now on a new floor; everybody present really had a good time and we had a big crowd. All the people present praised our new floor.

We are happy with a job well-done.

Brother Ray Johnston put his 20-year experience in the floor work, and was able to advise us to put a floor that we would be most pleased with. Thanks for a job well-done, Ray.

There also was much work done in our youth room. It was all painted in light gre?..n color and other improvements that made it look very attractive. All .in all, there were many improvements made in our Lodge No. 74. All labor, which consisted of many hours, was donated by our faithful hard-working members. It really is nice to know we have so many members who are interested in giving service to the lodge, instead of taking away from it.

Dear Members and Friends: It looks like the hot weather is still with us. We have been seeing these dark clouds lately but, by the time they get near us, they are all rained out.

Well, everyone who attended District II Youth Achievement Day was made comfortable. I want to thank Lodge No. 24, Cyclone for hosting the District II YAD, and to all the youth members who participated; you were all great. The best of luck to those who placed first in crafts and talent, also to our District II Queen Kelli Andel of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone and our king, David Marburger of Lodge No. 20, Granger. Congratulations and good luck at State.

Our District II fall meeting will be August 10th at Lodge No. 29, Taylor.

There will be a short meeting, beginning at 2 p.m. Afterwards the youth members will be taken to the swimming pool and putt-putt golf; about 5:30 or 6 p.m. a supper will be served. The district will furnish the meat, drinks and plates and utensils. Each family is asked to bring two of the following: salad, dessert, or vegetable covered dish.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Saturday's dance with music by the Polka-Time Music of Vrazels had a moderate attendance, which is unusual; Vrazels are a very-liked band in these parts. The renovated Ballroom floor, in a way, is disappointing; it seems the job didn't turn out well. The hosting

Wednesday, August 6, 1980 comm. had quite a few complaints from the guests. In charge of the dance were Henry Kite and wife Adele and helping them are the Hagans. Ray and Gladys are not on the entertainment committee this year, but are always willing to help.

Sunday's YAD had a small but appreciative audience. The dinner served, at noon, was delicious and the pastry table was loaded with home-baked pastries; for this, many thanks to all the donors. The Czech Concert orchestra, directed by Rudy Dybala, entertained the guests starting at noon and later the Lodge No. 88 Choral Club joined the orchestra with Helen Hegwood directing; Director Tim Kostom is on vacation. The Youth program started at 2 p.m. and was very enjoyable. The Royalty of District V was chosen by the appointed judges. Margie Barcak is Queen; Ronnie Barcak-King; Shirley Barcak-Duchess and Jay Mynar-Duke. Congratulations to the reigning royalty of District V. I am sure there will be a complete report from the Youth Department.

Again the Alexanders had a happy occasion to celebrate in their family.

After so many years, finally, the long-awaited princess arrived to reign in the Alexander circle among all the male members. The precious bundle, Julie Michelle Alexander, made her entrance at St. Lukes Hospital Thursday, July 24, 1980 weighing 8 lb. 7 oz. and to parents, Jim and Joan Alexander, (the oldest of the three brothers) broke the trend and the family greeted Julie Michelle with fanfare. I don't know what it will do to Homer and Rita, the grandparents; they still can't believe it! Congratulations.

Our president of the lodge, Sister Mildred Holeman seems to be in the air a lot. Mildred joined the jet set with husband, Jack; they jetted to Los Angeles, and now she just came back from a six-day stay at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York with son, James, and returned just in time for the YAD Sunday, July 27th. While in New York she jetted to Providence, Rhode Island for one day. Mildred is amazing, in, 24 hours she used three airports in New York. She is probably the only person who ever did. I think the conventions are getting Mildred down because she came back with a bad cold from New York and she was not quite over the cold she nursed from our SPJST convention in San Antonio.

Mildred, if you are going to jet around like that, my advice to you is: get a supply of vitamins. More power to you.

Again we parted with one of our long-standing members, Brother Edward Henry Poehls, age 74, passed

.and still another. away July 22, 1980, a resident of Houston for 55 years. Surviving him are his wife, Sidonia Rubacsh Poehls; one daughter, Joyce Poehls Plyler; granddaughters Jana and Joy all of Houston; one brother, Alvin Poehls of St. Paul, Minn. and three sisters, Hazel Kroll and Beulah Orsak both of Houston, and Lillie Oertli of Austin, Texas. Services were at 10 a.m. in Brookside Chapel with Rev. Cliff Bailey and Dr. Royce W. Plyler officiating. Interment was in Brookside Memorial Park. LODGE NO. 179, WARRENTON

Dear Members and Friends, Forty-six members and guests ranging in age from 4 years to 74 years attended the "Greatest Show on Earth," Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus in Austin, Sunday afternoon.

Participants gathered at the Carmine High School and boarded the bus while others used their cars. When we all arrived at noon in Austin, we went to the capitol grounds and had a delicious picnic lunch. After the meal, many briefly toured the state capitol. At 1:30 p.m. everyone was seated in the Super

8 Drum to view the performance of the circus animals and performers. After enjoying the circus, we arrived in Carmine at 6:15 p.m. having had a very enjoyable Sunday.

Just a reminder to members and friends to read the SPJST Calendar and attend our annual feast Sunday, August 10th.

We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to Sister Paula Key for chauffering and Sister Jeanette Schoenst for making reservations and getting the advance tickets.

The annual Shenkir reunion will be held at Seaton Star Hall, Sunday, August 10th, 1980.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. and a basket lunch will be served at noon.

Each family attending is asked to bring a basket lunch and sweets for that family. Coffee, tea and lemonade will be provided. Plates, napkins, cups, forks, spoons and bread will be furnished. Beer will be available in the bar.

Wednesday, August 6, 1980 LODGE NO. 80, HOLLAND Dear Sisters and Brothers: We held our July meeting Sunday, July 13th, instead of the first Sunday due to other commitments.

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Terry Bertrand presiding, due to President Bohac's absence.

The meeting was opened with the pledge of allegiance, followed by the roll call of officers. All officers were present, except the president. There were twenty-one members present at the meeting.

Brother Alvin Martinets, secretary of our lodge, read the minutes from the June meeting. They were adopted as read.

The bar, kitchen and entertainment committee chairmen gave good reports.

Brother Glen Latham, one of our delegates to the state convention, reported some of the highlights and changes of by-laws at the convention in San Antonio.

On the sick list at the time of our meeting, Att. Richard Mewhinney of our lodge, had surgery on his hip. In a Los Angeles hospital at the last report that I had, he is back home near Holland doing well.

There was not much business to be discussed. The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m. We are to meet again on the first Sunday, August 3rd.

SPJST SOFTBALL TEAM 84, DALLAS LODGE Dear Brothers as d Sisters: patio, time, I am a little late Due with thisrepo: and I extend my apology.

In the Dallas City Championship Playoffs, we played our first game Menday night, July 21st at Kiest Park Dia inor,c! No. 7 We played Schloboom Sales and they finally beat us 5 to 4, scot ag 2 rur . in their bottom of the tenth inning. It was a close and well-played game which we hated to lose.

Tommy Yates hurled the first 6 innings allowing 3 runs, 6 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Lionel Schulz hurled the last 4 innings allowing 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

Offensively, Don Lennox had 2 singles and a walk, Rick Fountain had a double and a walk, Don Jarma had a single and sacrifice hit, Danny Yates had a single and 2 walks, Kerry Goad had a sacrifice hit, Jerry Zabojnik had a single and a walk, and Tommy Yates had a sacrifice hit.

By losing, we dropped down into the losers' bracket and played again Tuesday night, July 22nd at 6:30 p.m.

Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 3 hits, walked 4 batters, and struck out 2 in an outstanding performance on the mound; also, the team played flawless ball afield since no errors were committed.

Leading hitters were Dan Palm with 2 singles, Kerry Goad with 2 singles, Jerry Zabojnik with 2 singles, Rick Fountain with a single, and Randy Christian with a single.

By winning this game, we had another one at 9:10 p.m. We had to play Schloboom Sales, the team that beat us the first night in 10 innings. We scored 1 run in our first inning, they scored 3 runs in the third inning and, although we threatened meekly, this was the final score in their favor: 3 to 1. Thus, we were eliminated from the playoffs.

Tommy Yates allowed 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts; a very good performance, however, with a few timely base hits, we could have won the game.

Leading hitters were Jerry Zabojnik with 2 singles, Dan Palm with a single, Don Jarma with a single, Danny Yates with a single and Tommy Yates with a walk.

Thus our regular season of League Play was concluded, we finished tied for second place with three other teams in a 12-team league. We should receive a trophy for the second place finish in the league.

We had a very enjoyable season and I feel we should have easily won two more games, which would have meant an undisputed second place finish behind the first place winner, 1 game behind them.

We have one more tournament to play, the Dallas ASA Metro Tournament at Kiest Park, commencing Saturday, August 9th and Sunday, August 10th. Results will be given in my next writeup.

The team's annual fishing trip is scheduled the weekend of September 19th, 20th and 21st, and the annual team's banquet date has not been set yet, but will be within the next few days.

(Bro. Editor: The following article is from the most recent issue of the Lavaca County Tribune-Herald, published in Hallettsville. The article is about the community of Moravia in Lavaca County which is almost 100 percent inhabited by people of Czech descent.

The article also mentions Thadious Polasek, who is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 103 in Flatonia and a sales representative. The article is re-printed from the Victoria Advocate. CZECH COUNTY (From The Victoria Advocate.

By Henry Wolff Jr. Hardly ever do I pass through a town or community of any size where something doesn't catch my attention.

Might just be a big tree, an old building, or children playing in the street. What did it at Moravia was the beautiful old hillside church with its high pitched roof, steeple pointing toward heaven, and big flower bed out front in the shape of a cross.

It's a picture postcal,: scene if ever there was one.

Moravia is Czech country.

"Most of the original settler -ame from the northeastern part of Moravia in central Czechoslovakia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire," Thadious Polasek tells me as we tour the church.

It's not a large church, simple yet

majestic with the beauty of stained glass, ceiling paintings, and ornate religious statuary. ''Those are statues of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, who in 863 brought Christianity to the Slavic peoples of the great Moravian empire,'' he points out.

A young man, Polasek is a member of the parish and teaches English and Czech at nearby Flatonia.

Many of the some 50 families in th parish can trace their ancestry back to those early Czech immigrants who began settling there in the late 1850s.

That country was mostly rugged rangeland then, land frequented by outlaws who rustled cattle and sometimes killed the Anglo-Americans who first settled there. The Czechs came with their plows and their double barreled shotguns, taming the land with one and running out the outlaws with the other.

The community remains primarily

Wednesday, August 6, 1980 Czech today, with a scattering of Germans, and some new settlers called Houstonians who have been buying up property in the area for several years now.

Much of the old culture, however, is still evident, and there's no mistaking the accent of most of the people who live there.

One of the early settlers was Ignac Jalufka, who is given credit for naming the community in honor of his native country. Jalufka built a store there about 100 years ago, and although it's been moved once and changed up some over the years, it's still there on a hilltop up the road apiece from the church.

The store was operated for many years by Frank Blahuta and his sons, Ira and Guthrie, and then up until recent years by Ira and his wife, Idella. It's presently operated by Hilbert Henke, who took time off from his duties at the church picnic Sunday to show me through it.

Henke sells mostly drinks and some grocery items now, but there was a time when the store carried feed, hardware and other supplies, serving also as a station where the local farmers could sell their milk and eggs. There was also a time when it had a second floor that was used as a dance hall.

Moravia is still a place where one can get some idea of what an early Czech community was like in Texas during the days when the farm families had only their skills, their land and their faith to get them through life.

Can't help but think that the Czech families of Moravia have their ancestors to thank for many things.

HEGAR, BUCHANEK VOWS EXCHANGED Miss Cheryl Lynn Bucanek and Mr. Justin Keith Hegar were married in Saturday afternoon ceremonies at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Albert Ruiz performing the rites.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Bucanek of Taylor.

Grandparents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bucanek, Sr. of Granger and Mrs. Joe Zycha of Taylor.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hegar of Thorndale. His grandparents are Mr. Henry Balusek and Mrs. Mary Hegar of Holland.

Miss Christi McLaughlin and Miss Theresa McLaughlin provided the organ music for the occasion. Mrs. Linda Schaefer was soloist.

White gladiolas were placed on each side of the altar beside two candelabra

Mrs. Justin Keith Hegar entwined with greenery. On the main alter was placed an arrangement of rainbow colored mums.

The bride was attended by Miss Carol Klepac as maid of honor and Mrs. Darrell Matoska, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Bridgette Zycha, Miss Suzanne Steinocher, and Miss Sheri Dlouhy.

Miss Theresa Albritton was a junior bridesmaid. Miss Brandy Matoska and Julie Hegar were flower girls.

The attendants wore spaghetti strapped dresses of voltage with sheer capes, each a different pastel shade of yellow, pink, blue, lavender, lime, and coral. They carried a single stemmed silk rose to match the color of their dress. Silk roses with babies breath

were worn in their hair.

The flower girls wore pink tiered dresses of twinkled merrimist. Silk roses with pink ribbons were worn in their hair. They carried baskets of pastel rose petals.

Steve Hegar, brother of the groom, was best man. Other groomsmen were Darrell Matoska, James Gilchrist, Preston Hegar, brother of the groom, and Ernest Gardner. Charles D. Bucanek, brother of the bride was junior groomsman.

The bride, escorted by her father, wore an empire waist gown of white organza. Chantilly lace sprinkled with seed pearls covered the fitted full bodice and extended into the full sleeves. The Queen Ann neckline was

scalloped with lace. The back of the A-line skirt gathered into a chapellength train of lace ruffles. Encircling the hem were ruffles of organza and lace.

She carried a cascade of white roses, pastel carnations and babies breath with white streamers.

A supper and dance reception following the ceremony was held at the K C Hall. Music was provided by the J. C. Whatley and the Rhythm Kings of Rogers. Parents of the bride led the grand march.

Members of the houseparty included Mrs. Steve Hegar, Miss Deborah Vrabel, Miss Dana Kuhl, Miss Rosemary Castro, Miss Cheryl Kostroun, Miss Sandra Wallis, Miss Kathy Poldrack, Miss Pam Schaefer, Miss Lacy Holman, Mrs. Marie DIouhy, Mrs. David Waits, and Mrs. Lillian Zycha.

The bride is a graduate of Taylor High School and is employed by the John's clinic. The groom is a graduate of Thorndale High School and is employed by Alcoa.

After a wedding trip they will make their home in Taylor.

STUDIES PROGRAM FOR UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON Czech classes are scheduled to get into full swing for the fall-term 1980 at U. H. Classes are offered for First-year, Second-year and Special Problems students. All courses earn three hours credit per semester and satisfy core elective requirements set by the school administration.

U of H Czech students had very good representation during awards day when four were selected to study at Charles' University in Prague. Those selected were: Jeanne Jacques, Donald Pavliska, Jerry Peters and George Slanina. Five others received scholarships awarded to those showing the greatest achievement during the school year; Jeanne Jacques, Judy Jalufka, Jan Koci, Denny Maresh and Donald Pavliska.

Our freshman class of 14 consistently exemplified a great determination and willingness to participate in class activity which was conducted (95 percent of the time) in Czech.

From The District Youth Counselors DISTRICT II FALL MEETING The fall meeting of District II will be held at Lodge No. 29, Taylor this Sunday, August 10th, beginning at 2 p. m.

The meeting will be short. Right after the meeting, the youth will go to the American Legion Park and will go swimming and play miniature golf.

After the swimming we will go back to the lodge hall where we will have music for dancing and a supper will be served.

The sausage and bread, chips, cups, plates and tea will be furnished by the district. Each family is asked to bring two dishes such as sweets of any kind---vegetable of any style or salads or pickles. This is classed as our youth meeting but there is plenty fellowship for the adults.

The officers of District II wish to invite all the members of our district, along with the Supreme Lodge officers, the editor, attorney and their wives, to come and enjoy the afternoon with us.

The youth leaders of the local lodges are asked that if any youth in their club would prefer to present any type of talent for our meeting, it would be greatly appreciated by all attending.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members and Friends: We held our meeting Sunday, July 6th.

We have a new member, Angie Hathaway.

The door prize was won by Denisse Wuensche.

I attended District II YAD. In the points system, first place teenager was Ginger Wuensche and first place junior was Denisse Wuensche. A two plus three-way tie went to. John and Paula Wuensche. and Billy Pfieffer.

In craft Ginger Wuensche received two 2nd place ribbons and a 3rd place ribbon, Peggy Biar received a third place ribbon, John Wuensche earned a 2nd place, and Paula Wuensche achieved a 2nd place ribbon.

Kelli Andel and David Marburger of District II will represent us at State.

Good Wild The District II fall meeting is coming up; the meeting will be held August 10th at Lodge No. 29, Taylor. After a short meeting, we will go swimming and golfing and have lots of fun as usual. I hope to see a lot of familiar faces.

Our social this month was a swimming party at Murphy Park, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Tuesday, July 22nd, we went to the park for some good old refreshments and sandwiches. We had a good time and a good attendance. We had three visitors.

Dear Members: We had our District V YAD July 27 at Lodge 88 in Houston, Tx. We had a good turnout in crafts and talent, but wish there could have been more.

Everyone who entered was a winner just for the principle of entering even though they may not have won a trophy.

Do not forget the State YAD in Temple August 24. We will be looking forward to seeing all of the District winners at that time.

Wednesday, August 8, 1980 We left by bus at 10:30 from the Carmine High School so our educational tour would have time to visit the State Capitol. Everyone packed a sack lunch which we enjoyed together at the picnic area of the capitol grounds.

We then attended the 1:30 performance of the circus and arrived home at 6:15. Thanks to Paula Key for driving our bus. Everyone had a great time.

Joe Tichaysky could be any farmer from any family from any rural community.

He's spent a lifetime living by his labors in the Czech-German town of Shiner.

Shiner is proud of its 2,102 citizens, its heritage, its brewery and its clean streets.

It calls itself "the cleanest little city in Texas."

The old farmer and his wife wouldn't leave there for all the money in Houston.

Life there is as comfortable as an old pair of crossed-gallus overalls. He doesn't have an enemy in the world, unless you count Johnson grass and drought.

His brown weathered hands tell the story of a farmer's life in the language of deep wrinkles, callouses, veins, old scars and new.

He no longer stands as tall and as straight as he did when he was a young man. He doesn't hear as well either.

And when he leans forward in his chair and begins to talk about baseball or Joe Patek's 000mpah band or the rising cost of beer, his four sons and seven grandchildren have to listen closely, for his voice requires their full attention.

But his eyes are still keen. He's never needed glasses to keep up with the gossip and goings-on printed in the Shiner Gazette.

He's got his weekly paper, his garden, his domino games, his '67 Chevy pickup, his secret fishing spots along the Guadalupe River and his old 12-gauge shotgun. Sometimes, he confides mischievously, it's all he can do to keep from turning the barrel on birds that dare to perch on the high line near his house.

His oldest son, Edwin, who lives in Pasadena, visits his parents regularly.

But trying to get his daddy to come into Houston for the weekend is another matter. There's nothing here he wants to see, except that Astrodome.

Edwin had tried to tell his dad what it's like to watch a ballgame in the Dome.

But each time, his father would shake his head and sigh and say he just couldn't see how you could play baseball inside.

He could no more comprehend it than he could man's first walk on the moon.

Why, a fly ball, he insisted, would hit the roof. Have to, son.

But his son persisted. He wanted his dad to come and see for himself, just once. More than anything he wanted them - father and son - to share a new experience. He wanted, while they still could, to watch a ballgame together in the Astrodome.

The day finally came this weekend. For the first time in more than 10 years, Joe Tichaysky made the 120-mile odyssey into Houston just so he could see that ball park with the refrigerated air.

Friday night the old farmer piled into a car along with three of his four sons and assorted grandkids and made their way from Pasadena to the giant stadium.

Evangelist Billy Graham once described the multi-million dollar edifice as "the boundless imagination of man, transformed into reality." But to Joe Tichaysky of Shiner it must have looked like the world's biggest silo.

There it is!" he said suddenly, looking out at the structure from the back seat of the car, pointing at it as we approached from the Kirby St. entrance.

As we went through the turnstile and headed up the first two concrete ramps he stopped a moment and commented that we were really going up high, weren't we, unaware that the dizzying heights he perceived was just the mezzanine level.

Once in his cushioned armchair, the old farmer sat there in studied silence. His 78-year-old eyes surveyed the crowd of 36,760. They looked out across the sweeping tiers of seats, a rainbow of red, purple, yellow and blue. They took in the geometry of the green artificial turf.

They turned skyward to the concentric maze of beams and girders that reminded him vaguely of some giant ride on a carnival midway. His sharp eyes spotted two pigeons near the top.

His lips moved soundlessly as he read the scoreboard greeting visitors to "The Eighth Wonder of The World." Only then did he begin to understand what his son had been talking about all these years.

This is a big outfit, isn't it?" he said, his eyes shining, "This outfit. It's a thousand times bigger than Shiner." His son looked at him and grinned.

Before the game started he reminisced about his baseball days as a youngster, recalling arguments with the "empire" and how he busted his finger playing "hindcatcher" and revealed the time he and his adventuresome teammates emptied a jug of white lightning before taking the field.

But once Friday night's game began, he leaned forward in his chair, his weathered hands folded in his lap.

Flanked by two of his sons, he didn't take his eyes off the field except when he reached for a pack of Camels in his pocket. He lit one with a match from a small box of Rosebud safety matches.

He just couldn't get over the fact beer cost $1.50 and $2.25 for a large,cup.

Back home when the Shiner Clippers played he said he could get a "schooner" for 10 cents.

He muttered "strike one!" and "go Houston" under his breath. He questioned an "Umpire's" call. He

clapped when the Astros suddenly came, alive, with five runs in the second inning.

He likened their scoring in clusters to "playin' straight dominoes."

He talked about the game all the way back to his son's home late that night.

He jokingly asked a grandson "did you catch a foul ball?" when he knew he hadn't. He told his son, too, that he'd, had a good time. But he had to be, heading back the next day. He couldn't stay any longer.

Two days of Houston was enough. He worried about his garden. It was so hot.

Four Gold Medals, three Silver and one.

Bronze. That is the total of medals won in ballet contests at home and abroad by Lubomir Kafka, a twenty-three-year-old Czechoslovak dancer and soloist of the Ballet Corps of the National Theatre in Prague.

A phenomenal talent? Far from it!

Indeed it is no easy matter to become a star of the ballet. The art of dancing is ninety per cent of hard work, endurance and strong will. Talent is that which prevails over drudgery. A dancer must start early in life while his body is still flexible in order to submit to the laws of ballet discipline.

Lubomir Kafka was twelve years old when he entered the preparatory section of the Prague Conservatoire. His first teacher of the classical dance said about him: "There was nothing exceptional about him but he was eager and had a strong will to learn and also healthy ambition in competition with his fellow-pupils."

He joined the theatre at the beginning of the 1976-77 · season. However, ónce more before that · he worthilydefendedhis reputation as an · outstanding dancer: together with his excellentpartner, twenty-year-oldHana Vláčilová,soloistof the National Theatre ·. Ballet Corps in Prague, he won a Silver · · Medal at the International Contest of Ballet Couples in Tokyo, in the contest which was not restricted by age and in which 28 couples competed. They were only beaten by the more mature soloist couple from the Moscow Bolshoi , Theatre. . In subsequent years came more successes;the top award in the Second CzechoslovakContest in Bratislava • this - time in the category of older dancers; ·· another SilverMedalin Tokyo1978 for a · performance with Jana Kůrová as partner, who is still competingwith him to win laurels in international contests.

In the same year, he was to win a Gold Medal in Varna.

It is now 1979 and Lubomír Kafka · draws up a balance sheet of his · performances-over three years in the · National Theatre. He has performed leading or smaller roles in ten ballets: "Swan Lake" • in the Pas de irois and as the Prince: "Giselle" • in the first wedding couple and as Albert;

"Spartacus" • Harmodius; "Romeo and Juliet" · Romeo and Mercutio; "Doctor Faustus" · Satan; "Paquita" · Lucien and Corsair; "CzechBallets to the Music of Old Masters"; "Cinderella" · Prince; "Carmen" • Escamillo, "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" • Wenceslas.

And even this great output did not prevent Kafka from attaining his greatest success so far abroad in the same year. He wonthe GoldMedal at the First International Ballet Contest in Jackson (USA) as a solo dancer and another Gold Medal for his performance with partner Jana Kůrová. She won a SilverMedal for a solo performance in a contest in which no Gold was awarded.

He excelled in the compulsoryclassical dance and the audience also appreciated his own gay choreographic miniature "Two Píerrots".

This successin Jacksonopenedthe door to the world for the Czechoslovak dancer. He was invited once again with Jana Kůrová to the USA to perform in classicaland modern duets in NewYork at a gala-concerttogether with American ballet stars. Still in 1979 he toured the Soviet Union with the same partner. In January 1980 they are to perform in an FRG film "Petipo's Classical Duets", and for February and March they have been offered a tour of Canada and the United States with the Canadian National Ballet. Luboš Kafka is now studyingthe roleof the Nutcracker in the ballet of the same name by P.I. Tchaikovsky.

When eaten by chickens or othe domestic fowl, these toxins protluc, botulism, or "Iimberneck," as it i ccmmonlv known. Howeve r . ~,.:.J.. muscles are often tii,' '., . ~o oe affected, explains Cawley.

The most common symptom of botulism is paralysis, which may appear within a few hours to two days after spoiled food is eaten. Usually, leg and wing muscles are the first affected.

Birds show signs of weakness and movements become unsteady. Then they :>1'e unable to walk and their wings may rest on the ground. If neck muscles become affected, the head hangs limp. Also, feathers may become loose.

In advance stages, feathers may quiver and in some cases, a large number of feathers may be shed, notes the poultry specialist. Soft pasty feces or even diarrhea may be observed.

Fatally affected birds lie in a deep lifeless coma several hours before death.

Waterfowl producers should also be on guard for botulism in their flocks, cautions the specialist. As hot weather lowers the water level of ponds and lakes, decaying vegetable matter is exposed. Ducks and geese eating these plants many get botulism. Since these toxins are water solube, the water source may also become contamina­ ted.

Most affected birds will recover if kept in a cool, shady place and given a mild laxative, says Cawley. Mix a pint of black-strap molasses in five gallons of water and give to poultry as their only source of drinking water. Give birds too weak to drink two tablespoonfuls of the molasses-water mixture twice a day with a small infant syringe.

Give extremely valuable birds an injection of polyvalent anti-toxin, he adds.

On i president Carter oba při ceremonii slzeli ap. Urban se vyslovil, že lituje, že jeho rodiče se té pocty nedočkali aby měli radost. Tak jsem si myslela, zda tento člověk není dle jména krajan?

Přála bych mu to vše, a byla by to cest pro náš český národ.

Právě co dopisuji tyto řádky tak nám trochu sprchlo, ovšem nebylo to moc ale přece to snížilo tu teplotu a každý rád uviděl trochu deště po tak dlouhé době.

Snad i zítra · ma trochu pršet a tak budeme čekat. Dnes přijel sem do Dallas president Carter, který se byl podívat na spatnou úrodu ve středním Texasu a slíbil farmářům, že se postará těmto o finanční pomoc. Jedni manželé tam farmuji dva tisíce akrů a úroda je ve špatném stavu a druzi nejsou na tom lépe a tak potřebují pomoc. Však take letos Američané nejezdí do jiných zemi na výlety poněvadž peněz je málo, ale za to z Evropy, Japonska, Francie, Německa, a Mexika letos vice než jindy zase jezdí k nám se podívat, kde prý mohou nakoupit levněji věci nežli doma. Tak je vše pomichané, že?

Tak Všelicos Anežka Houdková , Včera 27. července jsme měli již 35 dní kdy teplota přesahovala přes 100 stupňů=a to byl jeden den za druhými To jsme užili teploty až až a když k večeru se začalo trochu pomrakovat, tak jsme se těšili, že konečně zaprší. Ale bohužel, blýskalo se a mračilo se dost ale nám zde ani nekáplo a zas je horko až dost. Však farmáři pořád nařikají, že z úrody nebude nic a bude zle. Myslím, že opravdu bude zle když vše ihned šlo nahoru a je to poznat když jdeme kupovat grocerie.-za 20 dolarů neneseme domů nic, že ano?

Včera také měli ten piknik na síni SPJST řádu 84 a bylo to opravdu pěkné vevnitř bylo pěkně chladno a oběd velmi dobrý, a což to maso tak chutné a měkoučké, to jsme si pochutnali. Pečiva bylo dost a dobré a studeného nápoje nechybělo a tak mezi dobrými přátely

Hofmanová neb zabíjet je člověk nesmí, to je proti poděkovala každému za pohostění a zákonu. Mohou se jen chytit do pasti a přátelství. Také byli přítomní tři muži, pak je odvézt někde do pustiny. Ve středu 6. srpna. 1980 Kopečková z Ennis, že rodina Košárková měla svoje rodinné sejití tam, že navštívili jí a prý chtí navštívit a též poznat mě. Sice jsme si dopisovaly ale osobně se neznáme. Pan a paní Louis Košárkovi bydlí v Chicagu a jsou zde na návštěvě v Texasu, a velice ráda je poznám a vim, že se pobavime. Ona prý byla rozená Kmochová a jsou velmi činní v katolických spolcích v Chicagu. Tak příští týden se rozepíši více o tom sejití a sdělím, jak jsme se měli vespolek.

Maminka p. Košárka byla Marušáková a dobře jsme jí znali, i její rodiče a sourozenci.

Musím se zmínit, že v neděli na síni řádu 84 jsem se sešla po delší době s pí.

Anežkou Kutilovou a její rodinou. Její vnučka sl. Joan Kutilová umí velice pěkně hrát na harmoniku a pěkně nás bavila při obědě. Také prvně za 15 neb 17 let jsem uviděla manželé Gore. Paní Gore jest bývalá Frances Kosová. Velice ráda jsem se sešla se všemi a doufám že zase se někdy sejdeme. Někdy člověk někoho nevidí delší čas a pak se nemohou ani poznat-·Že mám pravdu?

Milé sestry a bratři.

Neobyčejná vedra neodradila členy našeho řádu, přišli v hojném poctu do schůze našeho řádu, konané v neděli 20. července, aby vyslechli zprávy o výsledku vykonané práce, kterou si vyžádal náš XXIII. sjezd SPJST. Po obvyklých formalitách přikročili jsme k jednání.

Postrádali jsme tentokrát tajemníka řádu, bratra Dominika Netka, který meškal mimo Texas. Předseda řádu, bratr Emil E. Matula, určil za něho sestru Grace Rohanovou, která přečetla podrobnou zprávu vypracovanou bra­ trem Netkem.

Sestra Henrietta A. Kalmusová, s typickým jejím úsměvem na tváři oznámila, že o občerstvení po schůzi je opět velmi dobře postaráno, oba stoly byly prostřeny dobrotami všeho druhu.

Poděkovala sestře Evelyn Matulové za "birthday cake" a všem, kdo štědře přispěli k obohacení kuchyně.

Předseda řádu, bratr Emil E. Matula, ve sv.é zprávě o tiskovém výboru vyložil situaci ve věci zadání tisku našeho Věstníku. Záležitost bude rozhodnuta do konce tohoto roku, jednáním byl pověřen zvláštní výbor jmenovaný Hlavni úřadovnou.

Sestra Martha Harbortová při chůzi vymkla si kotník a tak byla nucena zůstat doma a' ošetřovat se. Sestra Marie Blanařová k naší radosti pokračuje velmi dobře, rovněž tak sestra Anežka Dresslerová, která toho času je u svého

25 syna v Austinu.

Měli jsme dvě přihlášky o členství (Julia Ann Garrett, získal bratr Alfred Kalmus a Robert Popp Jr., získal bratr Emil E. Matula). Jmenovaný vyšetřující výbor, sestry Viola Fajkusová, Marcella M. Kleprlíková a bratr Emil E. Rohan, po projednání doporučili přijetí nových členů, což bylo provedeno hlasováním.

Předseda řádu, bratr Emil E. Matula, mimo jiné dopisy přečetl též dopis z Hlavní úřadovny, poděkování za vzorné uspořádání sjezdu. Při zmínce o sjezdové brožurce požádal manžele Frank Fajkusovi o prominutí, že jejich jména nebyla v brožurce uveřejněna. Stalo se tak nemilým nedopatřením při tisku, místo jejich jména bylo jiné jméno vytisknuto dvakrát.

Netrpělivě každý očekával jak jsme dopadli finančně. Vydáni bylo velmi mnoho, byl to sjezd většího rozsahu a tak každá položka byla důležitá. Bratr Emil E. Matula ve své zprávě co předseda sjezdového výboru podrobně uvedl všechny přijmy i výdaje a k veliké radosti všech oznámil, že jsme dopadli dobře.

Přité příležitosti znovu poděkoval všem za pomoc a přimlouval se, aby odměnou byla všem za vynaloženou práci vystrojena malá hostina. To vzbudilo ohlas a po krátkém rozhovoru bylo dohodnuto, aby se tak stalo o vánocích.

Příslušný návrh podala sestra Viola Fajkusová, podporoval bratr Garrett.

Bratr William J. Mareš, místopředseda řádu, informoval nás o finančním stavu zábavního výboru, načež sestra Viola Mazačová, finanční tajemnice řádu, přednesla svoji podrobnou zprávu, kterou všichni pozorně se zájmem vyslechli a beze změny přijali.

Bratr Henry Harbort zhodnotil vhodně práci všech, zvláště však bratra Emila E. Matuly a bratra Dominika Netka a jménem všech členů řádu jim poděkoval a zároveň gratuloval k dosaženému krásnému výsledku. Já jsem k tomu dodal, že bratr Emil E. Matula dokázal opět čeho je schopen a uvedl jsem, že nyní se těší na zasloužený odpočinek, nejenom po vysilující práci se sjezdem, ale po celoživotní práci ve svém zaměstnání. Koncem měsíce července odchází do důchodu. Přejeme mu, z celého srdce, aby při dobrém zdraví, stálé plné svěžesti tělesné i duševní užil svého důchodu se svou pečlivou manželkou Evelynou a celou rodinou co nejdéle, jak je lidsky jenom možné!

Sestra Marcella M. Kleprlíková oznámila, že Anděla Parmová se ze San Antonia odstěhovala, if nyní v Nursing · Homu v Yoakum. ' Odměny za účast ve schůzi obdrželi: první cenu sestra Grace Rohanová, druhou jsem dostal já.

Ve 2 hodiny 51 minut, po návrhu sestry Violy Fajkusové, který jsem podporoval, byla naše opět velmi pěkná, zajímavá a informativní schůze odročena. Pochut­ návali jsme si na výborných dobrotách a při společenské hře jsme vytrvali skoro až do pěti hodin.

Sestry a bratři, přiští naše schůze bude se konat v neděli 17. srpna v sále 1505 S. Gevers, San Antonio, Texas. Jako vždycky, začneme přesně ve 2 hodiny, aby nám zbylo hodně času na společenskou hru. Doufám, že již nebude takové horko, že se všichni do schůze dostavíte. Sál je vždycky přijemně vychlazen, proto, prosím, přijďte a zkuste svoje štěstí ve hře!

Městská památková rezervace Loket Mezi 35 českých městských památ­ kových rezervací patří také Loket. Toto nevelké západočeské město s 1700 obyvateli bylo kdysi důležité: vzniklo pod královským hradem jako pohraniční strážní středisko a v 18. stoleti bylo městem krajským. Jeho minulý význam se obráží v historicky cenné zástavbě, Loket vyniká také svými výraznými panoramatickými hodnotami. Zachováni a zhodnocení těchto kvalit vyžaduje mimořádné úsili. A zde je nutné vyzdvihnout činnost Městského národ­ ního výboru v Lokti (územní orgán moci a správy), který vedle uspokojování potřeb obyvatel zajišťuje údržbu i obnovu rozsáhlého památkového fondu a stará se, aby město splňovalo zvýšené nároky, které jsou na ně kladeny jako na významné turistické centru.

Jen málokteré město leží v krajině tak malebné jako Loket. Jeho poloha na návrší obtékaném meandrem řeky Ohře zcela splňovala středověké požadavky obrany města a smyčka toku řeky mu dala také jeho jméno. (Loket je český výraz pro ... doplní překladatel). V oblasti pozdějšího Loketska se v době do 6. stoleti usidili Slované. V rámci nové hradské organizace za prvních Přemy­ slovců vzniklo někdy v 10. století hradiště Sedlec, jehož polohu však přesně neznáme. Později byl pro nové hradiště vybrán skalnatý ostroh nad Ohří na místě dnešního hradu. Procházela tudy důležitá cesta z Prahy přes Žatec a při Ohři dále k Chebu. Nedávný průzkum loketského hradu ukázal, že významné části královského· hradu z doby románské jsou zachovány. Je to jednak chrakteristická hradní věž, hlavní dominanta města. Velmi překvapivým bylo nové zjištění, že obvodové zdivo

Mezi 35 eeskjrch mestskYch pamitkovYch rezervaci patii take Loket. Toto nevelke zapadoCeske mesto s 1700 obyvateli bylo kdysi vzniklo pod kralovskYm hradem jako pohranieni strait-1i stfedisko a v 18. stolet1 bylo mestem krajskYm. 26 toeiteho schodi gte severniho palace hradu path romanske rotunde, ktera je zachovana temef cela, veetne apsidy. A romanske je lei zdivo v Usti obvodu hradu. Loketskjr hrad byl v 1. polovine 13. stoleti vjrznamnjrm stfediskem Ceske kralovske moci a konala se zde drileiita politicks jednani.

Pod hradem vzniklo ui za vlady Pfemysla Otakara I. (1197-1230) mesto, ktere patfl k nejstatiim gotickjrm mestrim v Ceskjrch krajich. Tvar tizemi ovlivnil mestskjr priclorys s nalevkoviqm hlavnim namestim. Chrakteristicke je take zasveceni farniho chramu pod hradem Ceskemu patronu sv. Viclavu.

Mesto bylo opevneno s jediqm pfistupem - branou na severovjrchodni strane. Na loketskem hrade pobjrval tei cisaf Karel IV. (1346 - 1378), kterjr ye svem nevydanem zakoniku Maiestas Carolina vyhlasil Loket mezi mesty, nemela bjrt nikdy zcizena od Ceske koruny. Hrad byl goticky pfestaven a take dfevene me gt'anske domy byly nahraieny zdenjrmi; z nich se zdchovaly podstatne Usti v suterenu a pfizemi objektii. Hrad byl dale pfestavovan v 15. stoleti, kdy byl v zastavnim drieni rodu Slikri. V dobe renesanCni pfi gel do rukou meit'anit, ten si tehdy stavebne upravovali sve domy. V baroknim obdobi byla na namesti postavena nova, dosud zachovana radnice. Po poiaru v r. 1725 dodo k piestavbe farnno kostela a take vetiiny domii; nektere z nich byly zvjrgeny o druhe patro. Na zaCatku 19. stoleti byly easteene pobofeny mestske hradby. Zato vgak zde v r. 1815 zaloiili bratii Evien a Rudolf Haidingerove porcelanku, jei proslula svjrmi vjrrobky v dalekem okoli.

Tehdy n'ekolikrat naystivil Loket J.W. Goethe. Podle jeho slov je to "no.dherne poloiene mesteno, jei je, videno krajinifsky, pravjl skvost". A takovj r se Loket zachoval ai do souCasne doby.
