--Author Unknown_ Sunday, July 13th we attended the District II YAD at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone. The weather was, needless to say, clear and HOT! The program was well-conducted and well-organized due, very much, to the coordinated planning, evidently, to District II DYC Frank Klinkovsky and associates, including SYD Dorothy Massey. There were many entries and participation in all categories and Brother Klinkovsky has a nice, complete report in this issue; it is very concise and we will not expand on it.

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone members proved to be very good hosts and the membership is to be commended for the nice facilities, the meal and the fraternal attitude and all that makes a truly fraternal SPJST lodge click. Congratulations to all of you; it reminded us of the District I YAD in Brenham and District III YAD in Burleson the previous two Sundays.

While at the YAD in Cyclone; this writer had the pleasure to visit with Brother Mogoyne of Lodge No. 18, Elgin, son of Br. and Sis. Jim Mogoyne, Sr. a few minutes. He advised that his mother, Sister Jim Mogoyne, Sr. is in the Brackenridge Hospital in Austin in the Cardiac Care Unit. Both Br. and Sis. Jim Mogoyne, Sr. are longtime SPJST members and our membership wishes them both good health!

Many of our members and readers remember Jimmy Durante (many times referred to as "Schozzle" because of his nose) who always ended his program with: "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!" Many people, especially reporters often tried to find out who "Mrs. Calabash" was - it was his mother or a kind lady who took care of

Wednesday, July 23, 1980 his house, or a childhood sweetheart, etc. and it seemed to remain a mystery until the recent bit of information surfaced in the Washington Newsletter: Mrs. Calabash Was Jeanne Durante The recent death of Jimmy Durante has rekindled interest in the identity of Mrs. Calabash.

The mystery now appears to be solved.

Washington radio personality Ed Walker discovered and played a long forgotten 1966 tape of a Durante appearance at the National Press Club in Washington.

One of the questions asked Durante was about Mrs. Calabash. Durante hesitated before answering, but then told a moving and eloquent story about his early days in vaudeville when he and his wife Jeanne travelled the country by car.

He said that Mrs. Durante loved a little town called Calabash just outside of Chicago. And he kiddingly began to call her Mrs. Calabash.

After his wife died, Durante said, he ended one radio performance by saying: "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash." He didn't plan it it just happened.

It was the beginning of a love song and it continued until Durante himself died,

The Barabas reunion will be held at the Bartlett Town Hall in Bartlett Sunday, July 27th. The doors will open at 10 a.m.

Every family is asked to bring a basket lunch for their family and guest. Drinks will be available. Everyone related to the above family and friends are invited.

In the July issue of the WFLA (Western Fraternal Life Association) Fraternal Herald (BratrskY Vestnik) is an article on page 2 by Nebraska Director Bro. Frank I. Vlasak entitled, "What Happened To Fraternalism?" This editor brought it to the attention of our SL Executive Board members when he attended the SL July meeting Wednesday, July 16 and encourages all who can to read it. It is appropriate and thought-provoking!

There is too, too little true fraternalism practiced and evident these days!

SKRHAK-SHEREK REUNION The third annual Skrhak-Sherek reunion will be held July 26th, 1980 at the Circleville VFW Hall. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish for the noon meal.

Rosalie L,efner * KRIZAN REUNION The third Krizan reunion will be held at the Cottonwood Hall at Lodge No. 6 in West, Texas Saturday, July 26, 1980.

Registration will begin at 12 noon. A short meeting and games will be played in the afternoon. Each family is asked to bring one small gift for the games.

Supper will be served at 5 p.m. Each family needs to bring a picnic type meal with enough food for their family. The food will all be put together and served to all. The plates, utensils, coffee, tea and bread will be furnished.

MARTINEK REUNION The families ofJim Martinek and Annie Hejney and the descendants of the late Frank W. Martinek, Charlie Martinek, John Martinek, Tony Jaresh and Barbara Vlk will hold their reunion Sunday, July 27, 1980 at the American Legion Hall in Ennis; this hall is located on Rumbo Road right past the KJT Hall.

The annual Jurcik reunion will be held Saturday, August 2nd, 1980 at the Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky Hi-way 34 East at Ennis, Texas. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with dinner following. Each family needs to bring a picnic-type meal and utencils with enough food for their family and guests. The food will be served buffet-style to all present. Drinks may be bought at the hall; also the swimming pool will be open and you may go swimming at a regular fee. Friends are invited to attend and enjoy the fellowship of the reunion with us.

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE Some Post-Convention Observations Dear Members: Now that the convention is behind us and the "dust" has settled somewhat, we now have a chance to glance backward briefly and evaluate some of the decisions made in the recent convention.

The Convention Itself. I honestly feel, along with many others, that this was probably the smoothest-run and most productive convention in perhaps a decade or two. I also feel that there was less of a tendency on the part of the delegates to "grandstand" and to speak only to have their names and statements recorded in the Proceedings. This made the deliberations more substantive and to the point. In this regard, it might be well to point out that although the convention adjourned and finished its work on Thursday, this convention set something of a record because my notes state that deliberation and completion of the by-laws was completed at 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11th!, so that all that needed to be done on Thursday was a wrap-up of some committee reports and the election and installation of officers and committees. This could be contrasted with one convention in fairly recent years when the delegates did not even get around to discussing the by-laws until the afternoon on Thursday, the fourth day of the convention. That convention lasted until Saturday. The delegates are to be commended for their attention and discussing and dealing with the issues at hand. Of course, much credit must go to the overall direction of the convention itself, its Chairman Bro. Sid Pokladnik and his Co-Chairman, Bro. Jerry Prochazka.

Convention Hosts. Although it has been stated many times during the convention and since, much credit must go to the expert planning of the host lodge, Lodge 133 San Antonio, and especially to the Convention Planning Committee headed

by Chairman Emil Matula and Co-Chairman Dom Netek. The complete and willing cooperation of the membership of Lodge 133 must also be recognized and acknowledged. All of the

preparation resulted in a smoother convention. Since the convention, Convention Center officials have communicated with us in an effort to see if everything was to our liking and soliciting any suggestions or ideas that we may have I responded with only two One was that the PA system in Banquet Hall No. 2 left a little to be desired that made hearing delegates from the floor difficult at times, and secondly, the uncomfortable temperatures in the adjoining committee rooms during the district caucuses. The heat from the overhead lamps was intense. Polite suggestions were transmitted to these officials regarding the PA system and the lighting in the committee rooms.

Other than that, the Convention Center Complex seemed to afford ideal facilities for our convention. Keep in mind that San Antonio is probably the leading convention city in the entire nation.

When Bro. Mikeska and I went there in July 1976 to make arrangements for this convention, we had only one week in June to select from, the others having been already booked for other conventions - and that was almost four years in advance!

Of course, there were some complaints from some of our delegates about the walking involved, but that was not the fault of the Convention Center and its management. Some found the walking invigorating, others found it inconvenient and tiring. We need to consider this factor in looking over the facilities in Corpus Christi where our XXIVth Convention will be held in 1984. Some feel it more convenient when the meeting and lodging accommodations are in the same building.

1984. Speaking of the next convention, it seems almost incredible that we are already having to set the dates and approve the facilities for the XXIVth Convention in Corpus Christi four years hence. Bro. Mikeska and I will be traveling to Corpus Christi soon to meet with the Convention Planning Committee chairman and some of his committee to look over the facilities. It's gotten so that you have to reserve your dates four years in advance. Consequently, we have put a tentative hold on the week of June 10-15, 1984 as the dates of the next convention. That's the way it has to be.

Incidentally, Bro. Monta Foster of Lodge 79 Corpus Christi has been elected or selected to head the Convention Planning Committee for that convention.

Delegate-Member Ratio. Another fraternal Society domiciled in Texas recently held their convention and the delegates considered imposing a limit of 300 delegates. This was recommended by

VESTNfIC a Blue Ribbon Committee, but the delegates rejected it. For the past several SPJST conventions there have been recommendations to either limit the number of delegates or adjust the ratio of members to delegates. Each time the proposals have gone down in defeat.

Because of the delegates' reluctance to take any action in this regard, I personally am not going to recommend any such adjustments in the future because it has become abundantly clear that this will not be done until the delegates themselves realize the impact of their decision and take the initiative toward a change. I have heard statements from several quarters since the convention that this convention was too costly and that unless we do something about the delegate number that it is going, to cost us still more. My reply has been that until the delegates decide that they want to do something about this one expense area, the number of delegates and expense will continue to increase. It is up to the membership through their delegates to take affirmative action. Will it be after we reach 500 delegates? 600 delegates? 800 or 1,000?

Other statements that I have heard by delegates in lodge meetings since the convention were to the effect that they felt that in some instances the delegates were very generous and in other instances the convention displayed extreme frugalness.

Moving The LAM Department. The Supreme Lodge has already commenced action to follow-up on the convention decision to move the Library, Archives and Museum areas (LAM) into the basement. I had summoned a special meeting on June 30th to award the contract for the job, since the lowest bidder's price quotes were good for only 30 days and that would have run out on July 6th. There would most certainly have been a considerable increase after July 6th, so I felt that .the meeting and the subsequent decision were necessary.

The work was to have started on July 7th, but due to one requirement by the City of Temple, the project has been temporarily delayed, but this should be resolved within a few days and work should get under way.

Computer. We are proceeding to follow up on the convention decision to computerize the Home Office operations. We are continuing to meet and consult with representatives of firms who can assist us in implementing such a system. Of course, it will take time, as was pointed out in the convention, and it will involve a lot of extra work on the part of everyone here. It will be slow and

progressive; in other words, it will be done in stages and will not come about overnight, but it will be accomplished as expeditiously as possible, realizing that we are not operating in any particular time frame because that would be placing us in an almost impossible situation. We will be reporting to you on the developments in this area from time to time.

Vestnik Publisher. In the recent special meeting of the Supreme Lodge a sub-committee of three were designated and authorized to negotiate a publishing contract for the Vestnik. The three are Vice President Gebala, Financial Secretary Mikulas, and Legal Adviser Reuben Lesikar. They are consulting with Publication Committee Chairman Ed Mazanec and Editor Rudy Sefcik.

They will make known their findings and the results of their negotiations to the Supreme Lodge and that body will then make the final decision. We are fortunate in that we have the rest of this year in which to negotiate and seek information so that we will not be forced to make rash decisions, squeezed by any particular deadline. We know that the convention made three basic decisions: One, it gave the authority to the Supreme Lodge to negotiate a contract for publishing the Vestnik after consultation with the members of the Publication Committee and the editor; second, that the Vestnik is to be published in tabloid form; and third, that there be fifty issues a year instead of fifty-two so as to give the editor the benefit of two weeks vacation.

Accepting New Members. There is one change in Article 61 that constitutes a major change in the procedure of accepting new members into a local lodge. The previous by-law stipulated that if an applicant received five negative votes his application for membership was rejected. The convention changed that to "a majority of members present and voting". The discussion that surrounded this change pointed up the fact that five members do not necessarily constitute the will of the lodge membership or even a majority of the membership and that in keeping with democratic procedure a majority will now decide on whether a member is accepted or rejected.

Some Other Changes. There were a number of other changes enacted pertaining to procedures of complaints or grievances in the local lodge, but they are rather lengthy and complex and I will refer you to the final version of the by-laws for those changes.

Good Work. The diligence and fine work of the various committees, particularly those that functioned prior to and during the convention, and the

Wednesday, July 23, 1980 fine work of the four convention secretaries, is to be noted and acknowledged. Although we may not agree with everything that all the committees recommended, they cannot be faulted for their motives and their reasoning, both of which were honorable.

What Did It All Cost? As of July 10th, Bro. Mikulas tells me that the expenses pertaining to the convention are in excess of $223,000. By the time the final talley is complete, it will probably be in the neighborhood of $240,000 to $250,000.

That may or may not include the cost of printing the final version of the by-laws and convention Proceedings. This will call to mind the sign that we had at the front of the convention hall that reminded the delegates of how much the convention was costing you.

Congratulations. I extend my congratulations to all those who were either elected or re-elected to the many and various positions in the convention. All of you have responsible positions and are part of a team. You owe it to those who elected you and to the Society as a whole to fulfill your obligations to the best of your ability and I know you will. The future looks bright for us.

The "Fevers". In the two or three months prior to the convention, there was a dearth of problems that arose in local lodges that were submitted to various offices in the Supreme Lodge for either resolution or advice. Most or all pertained to the election of delegates, their eligibility, and method of election.

Some of these became rather involved and fraught with considerable emotion. I attributed all of those problems to what I termed at the time to the "pre-convention fever" which normally occurs in the period immediately preceding a convention. Now that the convention is over, there seems to be a rash of distinctly local lodge types of problems. I guess this can be attributed to the "post-convention fever". These are problems that exist within a lodge and usually involve differences among certain individuals.

Maybe it's the heat and drought. In some instances the situation is covered by our by-laws or by local rules and regulations; in others, there seems to be no written or oat answer anywhere, so the solution has to lie in people acting reasonably and in a spirit of cooperation. As I stated in the convention, we do not go around monitoring or seeking out these problems, but rather try to respond and be helpful when called upon.

SPJST History. Some confusion has resulted in some of the lodges assuming that the lodge histories submitted to me to be included in the SPJST History

Project were to have appeared in the convention issue of the Vestnik. There should have been no confusion on this because the project I have been working on for over three years was in no way associated with the convention issue of the Vestnik that Editor Sefcik was responsible for. In a few instances, the lodges submitting their histories to this office assumed that they would automatically appear in the convention issue and then were disappointed when they did not appear. I received only one request through the editor to send him a lodge history that had been submitted to my office so that it might be included in the convention issue of the Vestnik, but in this post-convention period there have been others who had assumed the above, but there is no other explanation that I can make or give. The two projects are completely different and had I been requested to send a copy to the Vestnik editor, I would have gladly done so. As it turned out, I think the convention issue was rather full and a good one.

By-laws and Proceedings. The printed and final version of the by-laws and convention Proceedings will probably be completed this time earlier than ever before, although I hesitate giving a date by which they should be available. The convention secretaries and the By-law Committee have been meeting and making good progress with their respective tasks and are to be commended.

Please be reminded that this year's Texas Fraternal Congress will meet at the Holiday Inn in New Braunfels on October 10th, 11th, and 12th. These sessions are of benefit to all Texas fraternalists. Be there if you can.

In the meantime, I hope you are enjoying the series of pictures from the convention that have and will appear in the Vestnik...and say an extra prayer for rain and some respite from this heat...but then, it's Texas and this is July...

LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Members and Friends: Our monthly Executive Meeting was held Tuesday, July 8th, at 8 p.m. The meeting was well-attended. Many important business matters were discussed. Plans were made to make the New Year's Eve Dance more enjoyable than ever this year. Plans for making reservations will be announced well in advance.

The July meeting of our lodge was held July 10th, at 8 p.m., and it was called to order by President Glenn Kudrna. Brother Kudrna asked Sister Karen Kudrna to lead the pledge of allegiance.

A moment of silence was observed for deceased members: Anna Hroza and Frank Tomsu.

Sister Judy Patton read the minutes of the last meeting and these were approved as read. The. minutes of the Executive Meeting were also read and approved as read.

A well-received financial report was made by Financial Secretary Louis Kudrna.

Sister Patton read a thank-you note from the Anna Hroza family.

Douglas Madewell was on the sick list.

Paul T. Heeth, Sr. was welcomed as a new member of the lodge.

Secretary of the convention delegates, Pat Fowler, made an interesting report on the Proceedings of the conventionand the changes made at the convention. The next convention (in 4 years) will be held at Corpus Christi, Texas.

Family games' night as reported by Brother George Good, is doing well. If you have forgotten the time, it is every Wednesday night, at 7:45 p.m, After the discussions, the premium checks were distributed by Sister Patton. Thirty-three members attended the meeting.

If you like to listen to polka music, listen to "The Johnny Krajca Polka Show" every Sunday morning, sponsored iri part by Lodge No. 25, on KBEC (Waxahachie) 1390, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. He does a great job of playing a lot of good music for your pleasure.

My husband and I are happy to announce two happy events that happened recently: First, the birth of our fifth grandchild (a boy) born to our oldest son, Bob Dlabaj and wife Faith.

He was born June 22nd and was named Robert Dylan. Bob is a lifelong member of Lodge No. 25. Secondly, my mother, Alice Jaresh, had a successful by-pass

LODGE NO. 32, VICTORIA Dear Members: Our 1980 Czech Festival has come and gone. It was a great success and I would like to express my appreciation to the members and friends for a11 the support they gave us to make it a great day.

Dear Members and Friends: This month marks the halfway point of this decade's first year. July also must truly be the month of the cicada for his shrill persístence continues to auction off one torrid day after another.

The July meeting was well-attended, although about a dozen or so of the, regulars were absent. No new business of note was discussed. Questions were asked of the delegates to the convention and some discussions followed.

Sunshine Chairperson Martha Durham reported that Gladys Reed was seriously ill in St. Joseph Hospital and that Frank Tesar's nephew, George underwent open heart surgery at All Saint's. John Eddyhusen is recovering from successful surgery on his leg and Annie Hosek, widowof a former Vestnik editor, is now we11 after suffering an arm injury. We learned that Hubert Brown's mother died in Sherman.

Lillian Cooper was in Fort Worth visiting her parents, Steve and Lillie Matusevitch, and they all attended the lodge dance held during her visit.

Michael Robinett is home from duty in Italy; his grandmother Lity · McMillan told us, and the Jimmy Greer's son, Michael is home from Israel.

LODGE NO. 179, WARRENTON Dear Members and Guests: Warrenton Lodge No. 179 held their regular meeting Thursday night, July 10th in Warrenton Store Guest Room with a nice attendance.

President Harold Bergmann called the meeting to order and also led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

The president appointed Edith Pfeiffer to read the minutes and correspondence in absence of Secretary Jeanette Schoenst, who also is a youth leader, and accompanied the youth club members on their annual swimming party.

Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. All reports were accepted as given.

Dorothy Oltmann read the mortuary standing and the names of our new members, namely: Sister Sandra Ann Heinze, Sister Verna Louise Mohr and Michael and Steven Mohr. A motion was made, seconded and we accepted them by unanimous vote. We are proud to have these new members in our midst and hope they will be able to attend our meetings and participate in the various activities.

In old business the poster and ticket committees reported that prize ticket books will be out next week, and the youth club members will assist in disposing of them; hopefully everyone will support our youth.

Posters were handed out, so that they can be placed in various business places.

The chairmen of some committees stated that will meet next week, and work out details and seek additional help. Members will be notified.

However, if any member who has been overlooked and wishes to volunteer their services should see the president.

It will be deeply appreciated if each lady member will bring a cake, pie, or dessert to be sold at the noon meal and throughout the evening.

Members and non-members are reminded to attend our annual celebration Sunday, August 10th in Round Top Rifle Association Hall in Roundtop. A noon meal will consist of fried chicken and trimmings, serving starts at 11 a.m. until ?? Meal tickets for adults will be $3 and children $1.50. In the afternoon, commencing at 1:00 p.m., various entertainment, games, music, including a variety shoot at 2 p.m. and a dance from 8:30 until 12 p.m. with music furnished by Texas Pride, will take place.

9 Those of you who have made reservations and bought advance tickets are reminded the bus will leave Carmine High School at 10:30 a.m. to Austin for the performance of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and bailey Circus on Sunday, July 27th. Everyone should bring a sack lunch because the bus will not stop for a noon meal.

Sister Dorothy Oltmann who attended the XXIII Convention in San Antonio gave an interesting report. She said that the host lodge hospitality was great. All the convention chairmen plus convention secretaries and committees are to be praised for carrying out their obligation in a most efficient way. We too, are thankful to Brother John Kubena, who did not run for the office, for his devoted service to District I as director. We warmly welcome Brother Ben Trcalek who was elected to replace him.

The Food Committee reported that the lodge will furnish cold cuts for our August 14th meeting; the youth club meets at 7:30 p.m. and adults at 8:00 p.m.

With no further business the meeting adjourned. Afterwards everyone enjoyed cold cuts, pickles, chips, cakes, pies and refreshments.

Dear Members: The July meeting of your lodge was held on the night of Wednesday, July 9th. The meeting was called to order at 7:45 by your president, Sister Ann Balusek.

All officers, except the treasurer, Sister Patricia Hillman, were present. Her brother-in-law, Wayne Hillman, was in an accident on the 4th of July. He is in a Temple hospital. Brother Joe Slovacek has been on the sick list. He resides in the Colonial Nursing Home of Cameron.

We were very pleased to have Mr. Dan Balusek as a visitor.

All business and committee reports were approved as read. Brother Anton Svetlik gave a very interesting report on the repairs that were made to your lodge's kitchen.

After some discussion on several matters of business, the meeting was adjourned. All members and visitors are invited to attend the next meeting of your lodge; it will be at your hall at 8 p.m.

Our meeting of July 8th was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Charlie Matcek. The pledge of allegiance to our flag was recited by all present.

Mary Werner had the roll call with all officers being present.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes, of the previous meeting, which were accepted as read and she also read a nice card of thanks from Sister Vlasta Nowotny for being remembered with a get-well card.

Financial Secretary Aleene Zwahr gave her report; also Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the treasurer's report.

The Special Fund report was given by Gilbert Walzel, who also reported on the activities at the hall.

Memorial Fund Treasurer Winifred Susan gave her report.

All of these reports were accepted as given.

Everyone admired the beautiful picture of the delegation at the XXIII Convention at San Antonio which our president purchased while he was there.

There were several sick calls reported.

We were sorry to hear that Perry Bosak was in the hospital. Mrs. Frances Rehak and Margaret Pollock have had surgery but are recuperating at home; also Vlasta Nowotny has had eye surgery at the Columbus Eye Clinic but is at home now and doing fine. We missed you at the meeting, Vlasta, but hope you will be with us next month.

Everyone enjoyed getting cards from John Kolaja while he spent three weeks visiting with his daughter and family in Denver, Colorado.

Edwin Susan reported on the installation of lighted signs at the entrance of each rest room at the hall.

In my last month's report, I am sorry to have omitted Mary Werner's name from the list of those giving reports from the convention. She gave a good report and forgive me, Mary.

Refund checks were handed out and the door prize was won by Winifred Susan.

The meeting adjourned and then everyone enjoyed a snack of homegrown cantalopes brought by Gilbert and Benita Walzel. Thanks, again, that hit the spot!

Dear Members and Friends: The heat wave goes on and on. I hope everyone is able to stay cool.

Brother Bill and Sister Mary Renfro and I went by to see Brother Pete and Sister Anna Stegient and took them the checks that were given by our Supreme Lodge at the convention; they were two grateful people, and they said we thank yoti a thousand times. They extend a special thank you to the SPJST, Finance Committee and delegates.

We want to wish a speedy recovery to Sister Margie Picha who had a serious surgery.

We extend our congratulations to Joey and Becky Milan who were wed at Woodland Heights Baptist Church.

Joey is a lifelong member of our lodge and he is the son of Brother Frankie and Anna Jo Milan.

We extend our sympathy to the family of Brother Floyd W. Barton, and Sister Marie Toberny of Dallas. She was a longtime friend to many of us. May they rest in peace.

Brother Jerry Milan and family just returned home from their trip to Europe. I only saw them for a few minutes when they came in and they had a wonderful time, but were glad to be back home; will here more details later.

Our next Country/Western Dance with Jerry Max Lane will be held August 2nd.

The May and June dances were well-attended and everyone seemed to have had a real good time also at the July 12th dance. Joe Young provided the music. Everyone I talked with, said that they were having a real good time.

The lovely couples at the, door were: Brother and Sister Risinger and Brother and Sister Green. There were also some new faces among us that evening that I happened to talk with from the Two-Left Foot Dance Club: Bonnie and Gus Briggs from the College of Manland of Texas City, and Jus Skinner of Alvin, Texas and Lois Hasletter, a guest. It was nice to see John and Pearl Lyman back with us again.

Door prizes were donated by Sister Klechka, Sophie and E.C. Baker and John and Rena Ordener. Thanks to all of you.

We started our business part of the meeting by thanking Brother Billy Smetanka for being the chairman of cooking the sausage which we had at our last social. We discussed the YAD one more time and finished our plans.

Sister Gladys Tyroch volunteered to bring a cake and we want to thank her and all the other ladies I named in my last letter. Youth Leader Sister Norma gave a run-down on all the activities and she was excited how many of our youth members had entered in different categories. Our lodge voted to give $25 to our youth club as a prize to be given away with a comforter that has the SPJST Emblem on it and a ceiling fan; tickets are to be sold at the YAD. If you wish to buy some tickets they will be on sale until August 17th when the draWing will be held at our 50-year SPJST members' event; you need not be present to win, so if you are interested contact any youth member or youth leader.

Now the District II YAD is history and it was a success especially since our queen contestant, Kelli Andel, was crowned queen; to her and Duchess Diane Dorner congratulations! We had many winners whom we are also proud of, namely: Kelli Andel who received first place as Teenager of the Year with most points and Keith Andel, first place in Junior of the Year Division with most points; each one received $15. In the 6-9 age division, Kimberly Schneider won first place in Foods; Melanie Zavodny, first place in Handicraft; Mark Mowdy, first place in Hobby Kits; Alan Haisler, first place in Constructed Items. In 15-17 age group, Kelli Andel won second place in Foods. Thanks go to all who helped with the Youth Achievement Day last Sunday. I will not name any names for I may miss someone; also, thanks to our youth and assistant leaders, you can see you did your job well since we had so many winners.

I am pleased to report one of our former youth club members, Alan Tyroch, received Bell County Medical Scholarship and also a Chemistry award; he is attending Temple Junior College. His niece Susan Tyroch is going to Indiana to compete in the National Twirling Contest. The members decided to donate $50 towards her expenses. Good luck, Susan! They are the son and granddaughter of Brother Ben and Sister Gladys Tyroch.

We accepted and welcomed these new members: Marvin Meyer sold by Btother E.J. Geistman; Tammy Gail Pechal sold by Sister Doris Svoboda; Melissa and David Schneider sold by Sister Louise Zavodny. We also had a transferee Lydia Surovik from Lodge No. 80, Holland.

Due to the YAD held at our lodge and the youth leader being on the committee planning the event, there wasn't time to get it all done, but to be sure we will have a nice evening; so look for my letter, it will be in time for you to see what we have planned.

Our next meeting will be August 13th at 8 p.m. Let's all come and let our wishes be known and then help them be accomplished. The more people attend the more ideas we will have and our lodge will continue growing.

NO. 74, LOVELADY

Dear Members and Guests: We had Dennis Ivey and The Waymen entertaining our dancing fans July 12th. We had a huge crowd with over 500 people attending; 432 tickets were sold and about 75 kids under age, plus 14 of them who did not have to pay to get in. It was a fantastic turnout, everybody had a great time. As you can see, the SPJST is a family organization because it provides entertainment for all ages, from one to one hundred. We, again, had more than ever people come from faraway places: there were at least 35 people from Palestine, Elkhart and many other faraway places; all this shows we have something for members and guests for entertainment that they do not have in Palestine, Lufkin or many other communities within the area. We have several people who are eager to join, all of this a response from our

guests telling us: We really have a nice place. This really makes all of us feel good here to know that we, at Lodge No. 74, have something worthwhile to offer that other communities cannot provide or don't provide.

We are very sorry to hear Dorothy Smith had a slight accident with her foot and was unable to attend the dance Saturday night. All of you be careful and don't get hurt because we don't want any of our members getting hurt.

With the drought like it is at the present time, people watering their lawns, can also get hurt falling over flower pots and things. I hope it rains soon because, it is getting serious now.

I am proud of all our members. They are doing a good job by inviting their friends to our lodge and , with the results, we are able to spread our SPJST Society. Keep up the good work!

LODGE NO. 189, BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION Dear Members and Friends: Our July meeting was called to order

by President David Storm at the home of Ernest and Billie Wentrcek.

The meeting was well-attended; also we had Brother and Sister Donnie Victorick present along with their children. Brother Victorick is our District I president. It was a pleasure having them with us.

It was reported, during our business session, that our slow-pitch ball tournament was a success financially.

Our picnic plans were discussed and will be finalized before the next meeting and presented to the membership for approval.

Please note that our August meeting has been changed to Smetana on the Brazos, sponsored by the families of Derek Shultz, David Storm and J. Vytopil. Brother Shultz committed himself to a fish-fry. Please be reminded that the fish he promised are still swimming in the Brazos; well, maybe our luck will change.

I had an honest fisherman tell me that last week he saw some catfish sitting in the shade of a Cottonwood tree, trying to cool off from the heat, so maybe we can chase a few down.

Please plan to attend our August meeting and bring a friend or another member.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON

The first dance on our re-done Ballroom floor Saturday, July 9th was enjoyed by a very nice attendance and the guests were in a festive mood with most of the ladies dressed in long evening gowns to enjoy the mixed music of the well-liked orchestra of Ray Jurecka. The Hosting Committee with Rita Alexander, in a rainbow chiffon gown, was in charge of the dance: her smiling husband, Homer, occupied the box office. To greet the guests at the door were, none other, than Millie Manick in a beige chiffon and her friend Martha Baxter in a lovely black gown. All three ladies looked very pretty. Several birthday requests were played for the celebrants.

returned from one week's vacation on the Bahama Islands, taking in the beautiful sights and especially the weather. While the two enjoyed their freedom, Ruthie's sister, Wanda Kennedy kept their two sons, Danny and Doug, and now grandmother, Ruth Duncan from Livingston, Tx., will have the pleasure to occupy the two grandsons for a week or two; that is just down the alley for the two lively boys who will give Don and Ruthie another week of peace and quite.

We mourn the passing away of our Sister Agnes Brom Kasper, age 88, who passed away July 12, 1980. She was the wife of the late Joe Kasper an ardent supporter of Lodge No. 88. Joe Kasper served the Hlahol Dramatic Club as director for many years, producing outstanding performances for our audiences. Sister Agnes Kasper is survived by three daughters: Mary Zatopek (who also was very devoted to Lodge No. 88 and active with her father, Joe Kasper before she was confined to a wheelchair), Margerette Simon, both of Houston; Doris Kaseman of Santa Rosa, Cal.; two sons, Leo M. Kasper and Victor Kasper, both of Houston, Tx; three sisters and two brothers, 14 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, July 14, 1980 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, with Rev. Sean O'Leary officiating. She was laid to rest in the Garden of Gethsemani Cemetery.

Our deepest sympathy to the surviving family.

The monthly lodge meeting held July 14th was fairly well-attended, but, with our large membership, the meeting should have more participation and interest of the members. As guests at this meeting we had Brother Victor Gerlich of Lodge No. 63 and E.O. Peterson (who I believe will become a member soon). A family of three newcomers to our fair city of Houston from Switzerland and making their home here in Houston are Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kostornlatsky and their lovely daughter, Paula; they are enjoying the new surroundings and new friends. I am sure this lovely family will be a part of our membership in the near future, because they like the friendly atmosphere. Welcome to Houston and Lodge No. 88!

We were happy to see Brother Ed Kadlecek enjoying the meeting. Brother Amos Kadlecek was reported to be doing good and getting better. Brother Mark Wahlberg was reported ill; his parents, Mary Frances Wahlberg, our lodge youth leader and Richard Wahlberg, District V Youth Counselor, were not

present to give their reports because they left Friday to Waco, Tx. to be with Mark to have surgery - four of his wisdom teeth had to be abstracted Friday, and they did not return until Monday night. Mark is doing well but is very sore, he is attending the Texas State Technical College and will be taking Diesel Engineering.

Wedding anniversaries announced were for: Seth and Ruth Duncan, 9 years; Doris and Henry Knapnick, 15 years; and Gene and Katherine Mikeska, 14 years.

A "Happy Birthday" song rang out from the assembly to the birthday celebrants for July.

We are very proud of Brother Joe Zucha who received an award from the "International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators"; the very impressive framed certificate which is the first of such presentations and compared under the "Nobel Prize Award" Brother Joe Zucha received this award in July, 1980 and wanted to share it with his fellow members of Lodge No. 88.

Congratulations Joe, we are proud of you.

Before adjournment three door prizes are always drawn: two are from the lodge and the third one, since the first of the year, is donated by the Liberty Savings Association. President Sister Mildred Holeman adjourned the meeting at 9:15 p.m. followed by refreshments and sandwiches supplied by the lodge.

SPJST SOFTBALL TEAM REPORT LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Wednesday night, July 9th, we played our final makeup game, due to a rainout in May. I cannot believe this happened: It's been so long since it rained in Dallas, against D.D. Lewis Carpet and we won by a score of 7 to 0.

This leaves us with 8 wins and 4 losses for the season in our League, and we may have finished tied for second place out of a 12-team League. I will find out tonight because we are having a meeting and will also find out when the City Playoffs will take place; my gues!, is July 26th, 27th, and 28th.

Tommy Yates hurled a fine game allowing 4 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.

Offensively, we had a total of 9 hits; Don Jarma had a homerun and a single; Kerry Goad, a triple, a walk and a single; Don Lennox, a single and a walk; Tommy Yates. a single and a. walk;

This weekend we motored to Stephenville, Texas for a tournament and the results were very disappointing; although we played well afield, we couldn't get any base-hits because the results will show. We played our first game Saturday morning, July 12th at 11 a.m. against Killeen and we lost the game by a score 3 to 0; two of the runs were unearned and all 3 runs were scored in their first inning. We played superb ball the rest of the game, but we didn't hit. We had 2 hits: a single by Don Jarma, a single by Roy Andrews, and Jerry Zabojnik got on base twice: once he was hit by the pitcher and then on a walk.

Tommy Yates hurled a good game allowing 4 hits, 4 walks and 7 strikeouts.

We had the best team on the field, but we couldn't buy any base.hits as hard as we tried and their pitcher wasn't that good. It's just one of those things that happens to a team.

14 After the game we went to the park area, built a fire; roasted wieners, had onions, relish, chili and cheese; also had delicious cooked ham, dips, salads, chips, cookies, drinks, pivo; all that good food was enjoyed by the players, their wives and children and our guests Roy and Ruth Gann (my old Army buddy) who always joins us there at the tournament. We want to thank Willie and Carlyn Ondrusek for bringing the ham because it really was good and Carlyn did a superb job of slicing the ham. Of course, she had Willie to tell her how it should be done. Our deepest thanks for the ham. The wives of the players all brought salads and all the trimmings, desserts, etc., which really made the picnic a feast. The team furnished all the drinks and hot dogs.

We may have lost the game, but food-wise, we came in first.

Our second game was played Saturday at 8 p.m. against Ron-Pope, a team from Weatherford, Texas, and we lost the game by a score of 4 to 1. Again, we had the better team, but our inability to get base-hits resulted in our losing the game and, thus, we were eliminated from the tournament. Earlier I stated, a team sometimes fails to hit and gets beat, but unbelievable as it is, it happened twice in a row in the same tournament. All the players felt so badly about not getting any hits; I just hope they all forget this experience and get themselves keyed up for the City Playoffs. Yes, as their manager, I was disappointed for the players in our losing, but I am not disappointed in the players. I will stand behind them and with them anytime; they are all very good players, individuals and members of the SPJST Society and will prove themselves in our next tournament. It's a pleasure to be associated with everyone of them, this includes their families. Although the team was disappointed in losing the games, I feel they enjoyed the fun and fellowship of being together for the weekend, and this, I feel, is the most important thing anyway.

I will give you the results or our City Playoff games in my next article. The weekend of September 19th, 20th and 21st, the team will go to Lake Whitney for their annual fishing trip, a fun thing to look forward to and our annual awards banquet will be held later, however, the date has not been set yet.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Sister Rosalee Kostom and they were accepted as read.

Sister Lillie Spies, treasurer, read a complete report of all finances.

Although the July weather is very hot outside, the Lodge No. 88 facilities are very comfortable; all except the game room which is very warm. We

wish we could do something about this room to make our brothers and sisters more comfortable.

We are looking forward to our Lodge No. 88 HOMECOMING DAY which is Sunday, August 3rd. This is the day that many members and friends come out fort' a free dinner which is always delicious and furnished by Lodge No. 88 for members. Non-members pay a small fee. The Birthday Club Sisters are in charge of the pastry booth, so all you fine sisters and friends bring your good cakes, pies or any pastry and it will be greatly appreciated. We will, also, have

We wish Brother Amos Kadlecek well because his dear wife, Sister Della Kadlecek, has been taking him for his treatment every day. We hope that Brother Amos will soon be able to join us because we miss him very much.

It is always good to see Brother Ed Kadlecek at the lodge. Brother Ed becomes exhausted after several hours but he always comes to the lodge for a little while and we are so glad to see him. Brother Ed can be glad that he has such a good wife as Sister Louise Kadlecek. Although we have our problems, there is always so much to be thankful for.

UTSA PROMOTES OUJESKY Dr. Helen Oujesky has been named acting director of the division of Allied Heo l th and Life Sciences at the

Wednesday, July 23, 1980 University of Texas at San Antonio.

She replaces Dr. Wayne Magee, who has returned to teaching at the university.

Oujesky, an associate professor of microbiology, joined UTSA in 1973.

Her research interests include radiation biology and microbiology.

She is a member of the American Society of Microbiology, the Radiation Research Society, the Society for Industrial Microbiology and the Texas Academy of Science.

Helen (Dr. Oujesky) is the daughter of Steve and Lillie Matusevitch of Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth, Texas.

We had 2 kings and 6 queens mour August 13-16 — Camp with District competing in the Royalty contest.

On the district level, all active youth I, at Camp Val Verde clubs, including Academy, Seaton, Taylor, Cyclone, Rockdale, Granger, District V Elgin, Beyersville, and Cameron-BuckSunday, July 27 - YAD at Lodge No. 88, holts were very well-represented.

I also wish to thank the judges who donated all of their time and we certainly do appreciate the use of their time and talents; for all of the members of District II, I wish to say thank you to Lodge 24, Cyclone for being such a good host lodge and helped in many ways to make our YAD a great success; special thanks to the members who worked that day, in the bar and kitchen and setting up the chairs, etc.; also, for the delicious meal they served. It took a lot of hard work to prepare.

I would also like to give special thanks to members from Lodge No. 24 who helped me. Your help was greatly appreciated. I would like to congratulate every contestant for a fine performance and I wish all the 1st place winners much luck whenever they perform at State. The audience is also to be complimented for being quiet.

This year we were honored to have our 1979 Royalty District II and State winners, Terry Loessin and Kelly Cavanaugh to MC our YAD. They did a wonderful job and are to be complimented for their performance and willingness to help. Terry and Kelly were also the winners at state so they still are the SPJST State King and Queen for 1979-80.

Wednesday, July 23, 1980 DISTRICT NO. 11 CAMP To All Leaders and Campers Attending District II Camp: Camp will start this Saturday for the teenage group starting with ages 12 through 16. We have 40 youth members who sent in entries in this group. This group of children and their chaperones are to arrive at camp between 10 a.m. and 10:30 on Saturday, July 26th. This group will go home Tuesday right after the noon meal and should be gone at about 2 p.m. The junior group of children ages 6 through 12 will arrive at Camp Val Verde between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The juniors must eat their noon meal at home or take a sack lunch because the first meal they will have at camp will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29th.

The activities for the teen group will start at 2 p.m. Saturday and will continue until Tuesday morning at about 11:30 a.m. at which time camp will be over for the teen group and the juniors will arrive. The junior group has 101 entries so they are not divided very equally this year. This makes a total of 101 children plus about 19 adults attending the junior session and 7 staff people, so it seems that we will have about 127 total in the junior group and only about 55 total for the teen group.

The morning break which will include cookies and punch is furnished by the camp but, for the afternoon break, the youth must buy their own soda pop so you should have some money for drinks.

If they wish to purchase SPJST caps, they are $3 and the T-shirts are $2.50 for the blue ones, and $4.00 for the red ones, but this is not mandatory. However, they will be available.

If you have any questions ask your leader or feel free to call me at any time.

Items To Bring To Camp 1. Sheets 2. Pillow (if you use one) 3. Light cover 4. Swim suit and underclothes (Jr. group underclothes initialed if possible.)

5. Towels and wash cloth 6. Toilet articles (soap and grooming needs) 7. Casual clothes 8. Flashlight (optional) 9. Long pants, socks-and shoes (a must if you plan to ride hdrses) 10. Hat or cap (for hiking and archery) 11. Change of clothes for each day and large grocery bag or garbage bag for dirty clothes 12. Comfortable shoes (2 pairs are desirable) because you will walk and play quite a bit.

Our schedule includes swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, archery, crafts, some hiking, outdoor and indoor-games of many varieties.

Parties ate planned for each night.

Leaders, Please don't forget to make name tags for the youth of your club.

(This is for everyone attending camp.) I will make name tags for the leaders and chaperones. We will have flag ceremonies twice daily and there should be a patriotic song or a poem in addition to the pledge. Each club will have one of these ceremonies for each group so plan what you will do. Table grace will also be given by the youth at each meal.

The shortest way to get to Camp Val Verde is to take Hwy. 36 West out of Temple, go about 6 miles, take Hwy. 317 to the right, toward Moody and go straight through Moody and to McGregor, go to the 2nd red light in McGregor and turn right; this will be Hwy. 84 heading east toward Waco, go about 8 miles to the Val Verde exit to the left, follow that road and when you come to a "T" turn right and then take the 2nd road to the left and that takes you into camp. Stop at the flag pole for further instructions.

It seems that I am running out of time this year trying to get this in the Vestnik so I hope you will come to camp and see what else was planned this last week.

The schedule planned for this year will be the same as last year for the junior category since we will have to divide them into five groups and plan to give them a little time to rest during noon. If it continues to be so hot we may have to slow down our activities.

We certainly hope all of you, who sent in applications, will be able to attend because we are having a place reserve for you in your group and your cabin nd we have plans to have a great camp.

Let's all remember our fall District II meeting and fun-day for the youth on August 10th at Lodge No. 29 in Taylor.

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers: The youth club held their meeting June 27th after the mother lodge meeting. The attendance was good.

Our Lodge No. 6 Picnic was planned for July 20th with dinner being served at 11 a.m., gamestand opened at 1 p.m., cake walk was set for 3 p.m. We also planned a fish pond. All the youth club members were assigned to different shifts. I enjoyed seeing so many of you at our annual picnic. (More on the picnic activities later.)

June 29th was District III Youth Achievement Day at Lodge No. 180 in Burleson which was represented real well by our lodge. Many of our youth members won first places: Beseda competition was won by our Teenage Group as well as in Senior Group Talent; The Juniors did real well in their talent. Our club members also won Teenager of the Year, and Youth Club of the Year. Our King and Queen contestants did real well in their speeches also. We were proud of you!

We want to congratulate all of the winners in District III. Good luck to each of you at State YAD which will be held Sunday, August 24th in Temple.

Don't forget District III camp on August 2nd through 5th at Camp Val Verde. I need everyone's camp applications right away.

Dear Readers, The regular business meeting of the Warrenton Lodge 179 Youth Club, was held July 10th at the La Grange swimming pool in connection with our social.

We had 43 members and a guest attending. Thank you Jennifer Matocha for serving as lifeguard. After everyone finished swimming we had a picnic lunch.

For our meeting we heard reports on YAD, movies seen and those still on the agenda, our snowcone stand and parade entry on July 4th at Round Top, and birthday activities for Michael Mohr and Jeannie Eckermann. Our trip to the circus at Austin was planned.

LODGE NO. 179, WARRENTON Dear Readers, First I wish to thank Brenham lodge for hosting YAD for our District I. They all did an outstanding job. Our leaders treated all participants from our lodge to the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" at the Simon Theater and treats at the Sonic following YAD activities.

Our lodge has been very busy. We sold snowcones at the Round Top July 4th Parade and later at the Round Top Feast. We will use the income from this to pay for tickets for all members wishing to attend the circus at Austin on July 27th. We will be traveling by school bus, leaving from the Carmine High School at 10:30 a.m.

We also had a parade entry which placed fourth. Our District 1 Queen, Jeannie Eckermann and her Duchess Staci Schoenst rode in a decorated convertible. They also distributed treats to the children.

July 7th the senior members attended the movie "Little Darlings" at Brenham.

The junior members will see "Black Stallion" on Saturday, July 12th.
