Mother's Day, 1980 is here and who would have thought that it would arrive so soon! Very often, especially in the newspaper business yours truly is reminded of a little plaque, on the wall of a business, he once saw which said, quote: "The hurrier I am, the behinder I get!" This is about the same as taking one step forward on a muddy hillside going uphill and sliding back two. At any rate, may, all of you mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, etc. have a nice, enjoyable day Sunday, May 11th, for without you we would not be here. This saying very probably started early in the history of our civilization; "Father's work is from sun to sun and a mother's work is never done!" How true!

Again, Happy Mother's Day! *** Wednesday, April 16 we attended the evening in recognition of 20 years of service to our Society by SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr. The evening was nice and well-enjoyed by all in attendance and we will have pictures of same in the near future and as space permits. *** Sunday, April 20 we attended the District VI Spring meeting in Ganado. It was another day of enjoyable fellowship and pictures plus reports are in this issue; please read them. *** Sunday, April 27 we attended the District I Spring meeting at New Tabor and will have more to say plus pictures in coming issues.

In that connection, your editor wishes to Again stress the importance of our lodges sending their contributions to the convention issue as early as possible; time is getting too short! Remember that that particular copy is supposed to be twice as large as the regular weekly copy of the Vestnik and, therefore, will take twice as much time to compose and compile. Please send in your copy immediately!

EXCERPTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE SECOND REGULAR QUARTERLY MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST HELD APRIL 15-17, 1980, AT THE HOME OFFICE IN TEMPLE, TEXAS The meeting was called to order at 1 p.m. with all Supreme Lodge members present: Nick A. Morris Bernard M. Gebala Leonard D. Mikeska Jerry Mikulas, Jr. Reuben B. Lesikar John A. Kubena-I Henry E. Vitek-II Cyrill Pokladnik-III Stanley Broz-IV Louis Hanus-V Matt S. Vanek-VI Bob Bayer-VII MINUTES - The minutes of the January 14-17, 1980, Supreme Lodge meeting were considered. Since copies had been provided to each Supreme Lodge member, it was agreed to dispense with their reading and a motion to approve the minutes was duly adopted.

REPORT OF PRESIDENT MORRIS He referred to his written report and discussed functions attended and commented on the pre-convention reports.

XXIII CONVENTION - The Vestnik convention issue cover of the Vestnik was said to be in process.

A list was read naming those individuals who had indicated that they would serve as convention secretaries.

Selection was postponed until later during this meeting.

President Morris reported that he and Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska met with Brother Emil Matula and Dominic Netek in San Antonio to review the convention plans. Both indicated that the Convention Planning Committee is doing an excellent job.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - During Brother Morris' report on the Youth Department, several aspects and goals of that department were discussed at length. He also excerpted portions of his report that are to appear in this week's Vestnik regarding the Youth Department, including the overall expenditures in that department, as requested in the January Supreme Lodge meeting. The members indicated that they found the information revealing and informative and felt that the information would be of great value to the membership at large and particularly the delegates to the coming convention.

4 Recess for the day was taken at 5:30 p.m. until 9 a.m. April 16, 1980.

REVIEW OF PRE-CONVENTION REPORTS - The members of the Supreme Lodge reviewed various recommendations of standing committees in an effort to determine the effect of various recommendations on the financial posture of the Society, especially the recommendations of the Finance Committee. It was felt that it would be helpful to the Supreme Lodge if it could obtain the benefit of that committee's thinking and research data in certain areas. It was decided that Finance Committee Chairman Arnold Vrla, be invited to discuss portions of the Finance Committee report during the Supreme Lodge meeting. After the lunch recess, it was announced that Brother Vrla was contacted and that he would arrive at 10 a.m. the following day.

CONVENTION SECRETARIES - The Board took up the matter of selecting convention secretaries. The names of those willing to serve were placed in nomination. Ballots were taken and the following were selected: Melvin Skrabanek, Irene Weidner, Christine Zich, Elaine Berkovsky. Alternates chosen were: Johnnie Krizan, Doreen Munson.

XXIII CONVENTION - Authorization was granted to have Actuary David Huff present at the convention for a portion of the proceedings.

President Morris reported that, as a result of calculation of estimated expenses by Financial Secretary Mikulas, the convention was going to cost approximately $100 per minute.

President Morris' written and oral report was accepted.

REPORT OF VICE PRESIDENT GEBALA He referred to his written report and briefly discussed several items.

WATS LINE - He stated that the WATS line has been a tremendous asset to the operation and that all departments are benefiting by its implementation.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR - He reported favorably on a seminar held at the Home Office on 3 consecutive Monday nights for Home Office employees and also attended by SL officers.

CONVENTION - Report was made that the Insurance Committee functioned in a very positive businesslike manner during their pre-convention meetings.

UNDERWRITING - He discussed the benefits and savings in using paramedical services in lieu of medical

STATE BOARD OF INSURANCE Report was given on attendance at a State Board of Insurance hearing concerning advertising.

HOME OFFICE SIGN - He reported on the project which was first started in July of 1979 and referred to the plans, specifications and bids. The matter was to be taken up under Old Business.

REAL ESTATE LOANS - He referred to a list of loans delinquent three or more months and his recommendation for action on each loan. Appropriate actions were approved on motion duly adopted.

SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS' MEETINGS - The Supreme Lodge

officers held meetings on January 22 and 28; February 7; and March 4 and 10, 1980. Minutes of the meetings were approved.

FIRST QUARTER INVESTMENTS - A detailed report was made on all investments made during the past quarter. The actions were ratified by the Supreme Lodge.

REAL ESTATE LOAN APPLICATIONS - Real estate loans committed and in process (as of Tuesday, April 15) amounted to nearly a million dollars.

Some $100,000 of the previous/quarter's loan allocation still remained unused.

After lengthy discussion of various factors, it was moved that a real estate loan moratorium be declared until the next S.L. Meeting. The motion was amended to include provision that the unused allotments remaining in some districts from the past quarter could be used. Vote was taken and the motion carried.

A motion was then adopted that the Society's funds for the next quarter be invested in high grade bonds up to $500,000, and, if acceptable bonds cannot be purchased, or additional funds are available, that bank certificates of deposit be purchased.

REO NO. 158 - It was reported that efforts have been continued to sell the 325 acres owned in Runnels County presently listed with several agents at $250 per acre. It was decided not to grant any exclusive listings on the property and to proceed with efforts to sell the property.

SOCIETY INSURANCE COVERAGE It was reported that there was an extensive review of the Society's insurance coverage including the Home Office building and contents and various liability coverage. Recommendation was accepted to purchase a Texas Multi-Peril Policy which would insure the building for $1,068,000 with a clause for inflationary increases and would also provide liability coverage in certain areas.

IRS FORM 990/990-T - All local lodge presidents and secretaries were informed on February 12, 1980 of the filing deadlines for IRS forms 990 and 990-T. They were also given general information about filing requirements.

Thus far, only ten lodges have furnished the Home Office with a copy of the form/forms. The IRS requires that a copy of the form be on file at the Home Office each year, but a sizeable number of lodges do not comply with this requirement.

LODGE ACTIVITY REPORT - The lodge activity report for 1979 for the National Fraternal Congress will be due June 1, 1980. All of the lodge secretaries were informed and mailed the proper forms for completion. A follow-up letter was mailed, but to date, only a small number of lodges have responded. The directors were asked to impress upon the lodges the importance of completion of the report.

6 MISCELLANEOUS - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska and Financial Secretary Mikulas were authorized to attend a seminar in Akron, Ohio on April 27-29, concerning information and education in computerizing an insurance company.

NFCA MEETING - It was announced that the NFCA annual meeting was set for September 21-24, 1980 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's written and oral report was accepted.

Recess for the day was taken from 5 p.m. until 8:30 a.m. April 17, 1980.

REPORT OF FINANCIAL SECRETARY MIKULAS He thanked the members of the Supreme Lodge for the 20-year appreciation banquet the previous night. Brother Mikulas was congratulated and commended for the contributions he has made in the management of the Society's business.

ANNUAL STATEMENT - Report was made on filing of the 1979 annual statement. He referred to several items in the annual statement as well as a comparative statement of progress in various areas.

CONVENTION DELEGATES - He reported that the final membership count revealed that there will be 387 eligible delegate positions.

Brother Arnold Vrla, the chairman of the Finance Committee had arrived and the remainder of Financial Secretary Mikulas' report was deferred until later.

The members of the Supreme Lodge and Brother Vrla discussed various portions of the Finance Committee report until the recess for lunch was taken.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES and MUSEUM - Architect Charles Voelter of the firm of Logsdon and Voelter appeared before the board and gave a progress report on plans for a possible move of the library, archives and museum to the basement.

He stated that the plans were about 85% complete. It was agreed that the plans and a cost estimate or firm bid would be ready for presentation for ., convention action.

The agenda returned Ito Financial Secretary Mikulas' report'.

DELINQUENT LODGES - Report was made on two lodges delinquent with premiums.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT - Reference was made to various items of income and expense. The gain in assets during the first three months of 1980 was said to be $378,571.18.

The amount on deposit in demand deposit accounts was reported to be $58,369.70.

Financial Secretary Mikulas' written and oral report was accepted.

REPORT OF LEGAL ADVISOR LESIKAR He reported, on the status of legal work on 21 loans in process. He also discussed foreclosures and bankruptcies.

LITIGATION - A report was given on the suit filed by the Vestnik Publisher against the SPJST. TAXES - Opinion was given that the SPJST does not have an exemption from state sales tax.

Legal Advisor Lesikar's written and oral report was accepted.

OLD BUSINESS HOME OFFICE SIGN - It had previously been decided that the Home Office building should have a larger sign identifying the Society's Home Office and the fact that the Society provides Fraternal Insurance. A drawing of the proposed sign was examined. After due consideration, it was agreed that the sign be erected.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 3:45 p.m.

The next regular Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin at 9 a.m., July 14-17, 1980.

FROM THE SPJST BY-LAW COMMITTEE SECRETARY 24 April 1980 Mrs. Thelma Hrncir, Secretary SPJST By-law Committee 10610 Stonewall Blvd.

Corpus Christi, Texas 78410 Dear Sis. Thelna: I would like to submit the following amendments to present Articles 16(e) and (f) of our by-laws. I think this would clear up, once and for all, the question of the committee's responsibility insofar as forwarding recommendations to the

Vestnik for publication. As you know, there has been some question on the exact procedure these past few weeks and months, with no clear-cut mandate from the present by-laws. It has not been clear whether the By-law Committee secretary was to submit all recommendations and proposals sent to the committee immediately to the Vestnik for publication or only those that were first acted on and recommended by the committee.

The secretary shall forward all recommendations and proposals for by-law changes to the Vestnik for publication upon receipt, even if publication occurs before the committee has met to deliberate on and consider the recommendations and proposals.

I also propose that Articles 16(e) and (1) be combined, with the word "Motions" being deleted and substituted with (The word "Motions" here is I feel, inappropriate.)

Such recommendations and proposals may be submitted...etc. Proposals for by-law changes should be to the point and as brief as possible, accompanied by a statement as to the reasons for the change (s). Rambling and lengthy proposals may be shortened (edited) by the secretary of the By-law Committee, or the entire committee when in session.

I am also submitting the following proposals and ask that Article 31 be recodified to include the following new 31(1) and 31(m). These proposals are generally following what has actually been practiced for a number of years, but since our by-laws are completely devoid of these two areas, I think it would be appropriate to have these articles in the by-laws.

31(1) The duties of the State Youth Director (or whatever title the convention settles on) will be as assigned or designated by the Head of the Youth Department, however, the primary duties are to assist the Head of the Youth Department in the functioning of the Youth Department. The salary and compensation are fixed by the Supreme Lodge.

31(m) The duties and responsibilities of District Youth Counselors (or whatever title the convention settles on) will be as determine.d by the Head of the Youth Department and State Youth Director, and as approved by the Supreme Lodge.

Again, in the absence of anything in our by-laws regarding these positions (other than the fact that they exist), this is merely to put in writing what has generally been the practice in the past.

Wednesday, May 7, 1980 RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE BY-LAW COMMITTEE Dear Sis. Hrncir, Members of the By-Law Committee, and Delegates: At a recent meeting of the seven District Youth Counselors, it was decided to submit the following proposals and recommendations for by-law changes to the By-law Committee: All DYCs were in agreement to recommend change in the title of the District Youth Counselors to District Youth Coordinators, and the State Youth Director's title to State Youth Adviser. Reason: Because these titles more closely apply and fit to the actual work done by the individuals concerned.

(Bro. Morris and Sis. Massey said they would support this p grticular change).

The following is not a by-law change, but a proposal to be considered on the convention floor at the appropriate time: The DYCs recommend that if there is any money left over from the camp allocation that it is to be left in that district for use by the youth in that district.

Hrncir and Members of the By-Law Committee: The following are two reconimendations pertaining to the by-laws since the By-Law Committee published its first report in the Vestnik issue of April 9th: 1. Re Article 10(a). The members of the By-Law Committee have recommended that: "All members of the Supreme Lodge and editor may participate in the discussions at the convention, but they have no right to make motions, to vote or to nominate members of the Supreme Lodge unless they are delegates."

I wish to state emphatically that I am in favor of leaving the by-law as it presently exists, which does give members of the Supreme Lodge and the editor the right to make motions to amend by-laws but they do not have the right to vote or to nominate members of the Supreme Lodge unless they are delegates. This is another attempt to chip away the basic and inherent right of the Supreme Lodge members who are, first and foremost, members of the SPJST. Here's a little more background information on this, matter: In the Vestnik of April 3, 1968 - p. 6: the By-Law Committee recommended the wording of Article 63(i) as follows:.

"Members of the Supreme Lodge, Chief Medical Examiner, Editor and State Youth Director are not eligible for office in local lodges, districts, as delegates or alternate delegates to our convention and SPJST Rest Home Directors."

From the Convention Proceedings following the 1968 Convention: "Bro. Ernie Hanka (88) asked for clarification on Article 63(i). vV:icn told the Supreme Lodge consisted of 13 members, he moved that Article 63(i) be reconsidered. Seconded by Bro. Jos. Koliha, Jr. (26). 째Passed.

"Bro. Nick Morris (66) stated this was brought up in the Waco Convention and praised Br. Fr. Steiner for his explanation then that it was an inherent right which cannot be denied any member.

"Br. Louis Hanus (88) spoke against, saying that we should not deprive the lodges and the districts of these good workers.

"Br. Jos. Koliha, Jr. (26) spoke against it, saying that it was unfair to our directors and was taking away our rights.

"Br. Jarda Cerny (111) said that this would deprive the members back home of their right to pick their delegates.

"Br. John Kutni (66) made a motion we delete 63(i) in its entirety. Seconded by Louis Harms (88) and deleted."

From the above, you can see that there was an attempt, prior to the 1968 Convention, to even take away the right of a Supreme Lodge member to be a delegate to the convention, even though as members they should have that inherent right. I do not believe that when a person is elected editor or is elected to the Supreme Lodge that he should forfeit any of his basic rights as a member of the Society or be disenfranchised. I would not want the privilege to vote or to nominate members of the Supreme Lodge unless I was a delegate from my lodge, but I feel that we should have the right to make motions to amend by-laws.

After all, the making of a motion does not necessarily mean that it's going to pass; that is always up to the delegates.

Again I state that I am in favor of leaving Article 10(a) worded as it is. I do not believe that the members of the Supreme Lodge have abused the privilege of making motions to amend by-laws.

2. A major controversy has arisen in recent days about how to fill the position of additional delegate to the coming convention. You will recall that I had previously pointed out what might be construed as a conflict in the provisions of Articles 4(a)3 and 4(g)3. In the first

instance, it says that, " ... a lodge attaining an additional 100 members between the annual meeting and 60 days before the convention may elect (my emphasis) an additional delegate." In the second instance, the article says, in part: "If a lodge is entitled to an additional delegate, as provided in Article 4(a)3, or any one of the elected delegates cannot go to the convention, for whatever reason, the substitute with the highest number of votes fills the first vacancy", etc.

As it turns out, the "possible" conflict has happened in recent days and caused a major flap.. I am, therefore, proposing an additional amendment for the sake of clarifying this entire problem as follows: A lodge attaining enough members for an additional delegate between the annual meeting and 60 days before the convention will fill that position under the provisions of Article 4(g)3 below.

Apparently, some people are of the opinion that the lodge has the option to "elect" the additiC)6aldelegate and some want to proceed under 4(g)3 and allow the substitute with the highest number of votes to fill the position. This proposal ought to settle this point. Otherwise why bother electing substitute delegates?

I respectfully request reconsideration of both of these articles, as previously submitted by the By-law Committee, and publication in the Vestnik of the above recommendations in their complete text.

BY-LAW CHANGE ARTICLE 20 The Finance Committee is a standing committee and shall meet at least bi-annually to review the retirement plan, as well as other financial matters pertinent at that time, and recommend changes to the Supreme Lodge, and will meet as necessary during the year of the convention for the purpose of getting and studying information on the overall financial posture of the Society.

The Finance Committee convenes immediately after · adjournment of the convention and elects from among its members a chairman, co-chairman, and secretary. All meetings shall be called by the Chairman.

Article 61. Change the first sentence to read: "If the applicant receives a majority of negative votes, his application is rejected." · Article 63. Change to read as follows: "Initiation of new members will be done annually and more often, if the local lodge desires." .

Article 73. Change to read as follows: "A member who has a prematurely paid-up certificate to Jess than $500 may remain a social member, upon payment of all local lodge dues and assessments prescribed by the local lodge annually in advance, but such social member is not eligible to vote or hold office. Such social member may, at the discretion of the local lodge, have the right to deliberation, and ma,1 serve on an appointed committee. However, any such appointment must be approved by the local lodge.

Article 82. Change the second paragraph to read: "Any legal entity or any person having an insurable interest may be so designated."

Article 83. Change to read: "In the event the designated beneficiary predeceases the insured or for some· reason is not legally entitled to receive the proceeds of the certificate, then the proceeds of such certificate shall be paid to the legal heirs of the member in accordance with the laws of descent and distribution of the State of Texas."

Article 103: Add a new sentence after "signature" and just before the last paragraph to read: "Minutes shall be kept in the lodge office, if one is available; otherwise, the secretary has the obligation of permitting any member to examine the minutes at a reasonable time and place agreeo upon by the member and the secretary."

Article 108: Add Section (b) and recodify the balance of the article. The new Section (b) to read: "The Board of Trustees will be furnished and maintain for its permanent records all contracts for which .the lodge is obligated "' pay."

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Members: President R.L. Sadecky presided at our regular monthly meeting held April 21st at 7:30 p.m.

Flagbearer Cheri Petr led the standing group in reciting the pledge to our United States flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Brother Joseph Kutil, father of our financial secretary, Lillie Jarma.

Our sincere sympathy to the family. May our departed brother rest in peace.

Secretary Salac read the minutes of the March meeting. They were approved.

Reports were given by the entertainment chairman 2nd Vice President Paul Pokladnik, Youth Leader Bessie Petr, House Committee Chairman Adolph Salac and Ball Club by Ben Jarma, saying that practice and playing is going strong.

For the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council, Sister Carlyn Ondrusek reported a donation was made to the Ronald McDonald Building Fund at the last meeting and also the next meeting location will be at the Catholic Czech Club May 13th on Military Parkway at 7:30 p.m., with hosts KJZT No. 111 and KJT No. 111. I find that hard to believe because the forecaster said it wouldn't get colder than 40 degrees, but Brother Oldrich has already replanted and it won't be long before Sister Buelah will be filling jars with those green rascals.

The members voted to donate $35.00 to the Lavaca Work Activity Center to be used for the Special Olympics.

It was announced that there is a change in the delegates to the convention.

The members agreed to hold our regular meeting as usual Sunday, May 11th which is Mother's Day. Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned. Entertainment was

The only April birthday present was Andela Zabransky who won the birthday cake.

An unbelievable number of 7,000 calendars go out to advertise our activities. Each month the Entertainment Committee meets to prepare these printed calendars for mailing to let you know, in advance, what activities will take place at Lodge No. 88.

The Czech director of the Hlahol Dramatic Club, Sister Rose Sicner, contemplating a Czech play some time in the fall. The play "Podafene panstvo" (Successful Society), a comedy, promises to be a special production. More about this later. The English play "Hot Water" is kept on the shelf to be presented as soon as our fall calendar will allow. The parts are in good hands and ready to go as soon as the pressure of activities will relax a little bit. Both directors, Tim Kostom and Rose Sicner, are trying their best with the time on hand.

Sister Mary Johnson experienced an accident by slipping off some steps and broke-her left wrist. It must be an ordeal for Mary because she is a very busy and lively lady; there is nothing slow about her. Get-well quick!

Brother Joseph Koci entered Memorial City Hospital Monday, April 28th to undergo surgery,. Sister Marie Koci is a very good nurse and will see to it that her husband will get well soon and be in circulation again.

Sister Evelyn Antrich had an unfortunate experience by slipping on an escalator and broke her ankle and now, with the support of crutches, she gets around fairly well; that does not keep her from serving on the Entertainment Committee to be at the door to meet the guests. Evelyn, more power to you!

SPJST SOFTBALL 1 EAM

LODGE NO. 84, DALAS Dear Brothers and Sisters: Saturday morning, April 26th, at 8 a.m., we played our first game in the Denton Tournament against the very strong team from Wichita Falls, Texas called "McGregor." We won by a score of 4 to 1. Our team played an outstanding game afield as well as at bat.

We also had a superb pitching performance turned in by Lionel Schulz

who allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Don Jarma with 2 triples, Don Lennox, a triple and a single; Dan Palm, a single and a walk; Rick Fountain, a single and a sacrifice hit; Mark Hammond, a single and 2 sacrifice hits; and Paul Baftos with a single.

By winning the first game, we had a second game at 11 a.m. against First Presbyterian from Dallas. We also won this game by a score of 4 to 1, and Tommy Yates was the winning pitcher allowing 5 hits, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.

The team played flawless ball afield, and kept hitting the `ole' ball getting 9 hits, 3 sacrifice hits and one walk.

Leading hitters were Don Jarma with 2 singles and a homerun, Tommy Yates with 2 singles, Dan Palm with a single, Rick Fountain with a sacrifice, Mark Hammond with a sacrifice, Danny Yates with a walk, Don Lennox with a single, Kerry Goad with a single, and Paul Bartos with a single and a sacrifice hit.

After the game, we had a picnic lunch of sandwiches and other goodies and then we returned to Dallas until our 9:30 game that evening. The weather was cloudy, cold and damp all day long including Saturday night.

Sa\turday night, we played at 10:40 p.m., one hour and 10 minutes late, against Tux. Inc. from El Reno, Oklahoma, last year's 1979 State Champions in Oklahoma. We got off to a poor start, because we committed our

first 2 errors in the tournament and we fell behind by a score of 7 to 1, and in the 4th inning, we scored 5 runs; however, not enough to overcome the early deficit and lost the game by a score of 8 to 5. We felt we got cheated because the umpires called the game due to a 1 hour and 20-minute time limit, and our team felt we could have beaten our opponents, had we had another inning of play. It was close and debatable on the time limit call, however, I was very proud of our team; they came back and didn't give up until the last out, that's a mark of good team.

Our next game was scheduled/again for 8 a.m. Sunday morning, April 27th and the most sleep any of the players got was 3 hours, losing 1 hour due to the time change. We played Sarge Construction from Dallas, Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and we won this game by a score of 3 to 2. The winning pitcher was Tommy Yates, his second win, allowing 2 runs, 4 hits, 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. Although the team looked a bit sleepy and sluggish, they played well enough to win afield and, offensively, we had 4 hits, 3 walks and a sacrifice.

Hitters were Dan Palm with a single and a walk, Rick Fountain with a single, Mark Hammond with a single and a walk, Kerry Goad with a single and a walk, and Jerry Zabojnik with a sacrifice hit.

By winning we remained in the tournament and had to play again at 11 a.m. Our opponent was the same team we opened play against Saturday morning, the "McGregor" team from Wichita Falls. We didn't fare toodwell because we, eventu,113,"1ost by a score of 8 to 5; however, the team played hard and never gave up until the last inning was played. Lionel Schulz was the losing pitcher allowing 8 runs, (4 were unearned because 3 errors were committed), 7 hits, 1 walk and 1 strikeout.

Needless to say, the team was tired, however, they tried hard to win.

Offensively, we outhit our opponents because we had 8 hits, 2 walks and a sacrifice hit.

Hitters were Don Jarma with a triple, Mark Hammond with a double and a single Danny Yates with a double and a single, Dan Palm with a single, Rick Fountain with a sacrifice and a walk, Kerry Goad with a single and a walk, and Jerry Zabojnik with a single.

After we lost we were thus eliminated from play and 6 teams were left. There were 27 teams when the tournament started, so that means we finished ahead of 20 teams, (not too bad considering all the strong teams that were entered). The

Wednesday, May 7, 1980 team is proud of their showing, however, we would liked to have won a couple more games or even more.

Wednesday night, April 30th, we played our regular league game at Kiest Diamond No. 1 at 9:10 p.m. against the Knight Construction team and we won by a score of 3 to 2 in extra innings.

Tommy Yates hurled the first 4 innings allowing 2 runs, both unearned, 3 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Lionel Schulz hurled the last 4 innings allowing 2 hits, no walks and 2 strikeouts and was the winning pitcher as a result of Randy Christian's game winning base hit in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Hitters for the game were Paul Bartos with a triple and a walk, Don Jarma with 2 singles, Dan Palm with a single and 2 walks, Jerry Zabojnik with a sacrifice, Danny Yates with a single and a walk, Don Lennox with a single, and a walk, Kerry Goad with a walk, and Randy Christian with a game winning single. It was our third league win without a loss.

Tuesday, May 6th, our opponent is scheduled to play Charlie's at Sam Grand Diamond No. 1 at 7:50 p.m., then, on Wednesday, May 14th, our opponent will be D.D. Lewis Carpet at 9:10 p.m. at Kiest Diamond No. 1, and Wednesday, May 21, Kiest No. 1, 7:50 p.m., we play Schol-Beum Sales.

Remember, our annual Softball Team Benefit Dance for Saturday, May 31st at 8:30 p.m. at 2625 Floyd Street, at our Lodge No. 84 Hall. Do come, we need your support and enjoy the popular Czech Harvesters Orchestra.

IN VICTORIA The third Czech Festival in Victoria has been set for Sunday, June 29, 1980 starting at 11 a.m.

It will be held at the Community Center, 2905 East North St., Victoria, Texas. Dinner will be served starting at 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. consisting of sausage and trimmings. A kolache booth will be opened throughout the afternoon.

There will be an auction, country store and cake walk. Sausage sandwiches will be sold in the afternoon, and the beer garden will be open.

FEATURES BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE CZECH CULTURAL CLUB The Brazosport College Czech Cultural Club held its monthly meeting at the college, Thursday, April 24, 1980, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 137.

President David Korenek called the meeting to order. Mr. Ernest Mensik gave the secretary-treasurer's report.

During the business meeting, copies of the proposed changes of the constitution of the club were distributed; these to be voted on at our next meeting on May 29th, Response on the club's attendance to the Opera, "Two Widows" given by the Houston Opera Studio on the University of Houston Campus, March 29th, was great. Tickets for attendance to the performance by the "Moravanka" in East Bernard were distributed. Plans for the groups' attendance were finalized.

Plans were also made to attend the Czech Fest in Rosenberg on May 3rd.

Following the business meeting, Wilbur Sandlin, a Czech student, gave a most informative talk on early Settlers of Czech nationality in the State of Texas.

He is doing extensive research on this subject and, at a later date, will report more fully on his findings.

From The District Youth Counselors DISTRICT V YOUTH COUNSELOR Dear Dist. V Members: Once again it is time to make plans for our District V Spring Picnic. This year it will be held at Lodge No. 88 on their picnic grounds, on Saturday, May 17, 1980 starting at 2 p.m. The members of Lodge 88 have been kind enough to let us use their swimming pool, so, if you are interested in swimming, bring your swim suit and towel. Other outdoor games will be enjoyed by young and old. This picnic is not only for the Youth Club members, but for their parents as well, also for anyone interested in the youth program.

Dinner will be served about 5 p.m. Meat and drinks will be furnished by the district. Everyone is to bring a covered dish, please check with your youth leader to see what your group is assigned to bring. This day is also being shared by the Lodge No. 88 Youth Club for their annual Parents Appreciation Day. Immediately following the dinner, a short program and installation of Lodge 88 Youth Club officers will be held.

DISTRICT VI 'MISS SPJST' CONTEST HELD IN GANADO ON APRIL 20, 1980

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members: On April 19th and 20th we attended the State Youth Leaders Retreat at Camp Val Verde sponsored by the Supreme Lodge. This made our 7th year to attend this retreat, and each year has proven to surpass the last. Even though there was a declir in attendance, this did not seem to damper the morale or enthusiasm of those attending. There were many new faces this year which is good, as this is pi oof of interest in our Youth Departmer t and Program.

The weekend w s well-planned, good food and outs' anding leadership executed by Sisttr Massey, our State Youth Director, a id assisted by the six District Youth Counselors who were in attendance.

The guest speaker, Coach Stafford from Temple High School, was well received with his talk on "Motivation".

His outstanding speech stimulated one's needs and desires to do more for our youth as well as oneself.

Overall these had to be the best Training sessions we have had the opportunity to attend. Our sincere thanks to the Supreme Lodge for making this weekend possible.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother LLOYD L. BAKER, SR. who passed away March 14, 1980, at the age of 55. He was sales manager for Central Distributors in Dallas. He was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church and SPJST No. 84. Bro. Lloyd was very active at Lodge 84 in the past years. His positions were bar chairman, entertainment chairman, second vice president, house committee assistant, plus special committee chairman.

Survivors include, wife, Bessie A. Baker, Dallas; daughter, Barbara Jones, Irving; son, Lloyd L. Baker, Jr., Dallas; sister, Mary L. Savage, Dallas and two grandchildren.

Rosary was recited Sunday, March 16th at the Jerome Crane Chapel.

Eulogy was given by Bro. Paul Pokladnik. Msgr. C.E. McTamney and Father Mills were the celebrants for the funeral Mass at St. Monica's Catholic Church March 17th. Entombment was at Calvary Hill Mausoleum.

Pallbearers were Charles Graham, Ray Kimbrough, Paul Pokladnik, Kenney Ray Horak, Ben Jarma and Adolph Salac.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio in behalf of all our members, wish to express our

sincere sympathy to the family of our deceased lodge brother, LOUIS DRESSLER, age 88, who passed away Thursday, March 27th, 1980.

Brother Dressler was a native of Czechoslovakia, also a former resident of El Campo and a resident of our City of San Antonio for 59 years.

He was a member of Lodge No. 133 and he also was among one of the original organizers of our lodge. He also had a high position in th okol.

Survivors include his wife, Sister Agnes Dressler of San Antonio (who was also one of charter member Lodge 133 since 1917); daughter, Mrs. Martha Bransford of Santa Anna, California; one son, A.L. Dressler of Austin; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted at the Mission Chapel with Brother Rudy Sefcik, SPJST Vestnik editor officiating. Brother Sefcik spoke of the life of Brother Dressler and his involvement in the SPJST. The history of Brother Louis is quite unique, from the time of his departure from the old country. Brother Jaroslav Kleprlik also spoke of him in the Czech language.

We will miss Brother Dressler very much because we have always looked forward to seeing him at the meeting with his wonderful wife, Sister Agnes. At the last meeting I spoke to him and asked him to take good care of himself so that he may be with us at the convention.

He replied that he will do the best that he can; that making the convention would be his top priority, and that, for the last time, he would have a chance to meet many of his friends. The good Lord had other plans for him.

To the Dressler family we extend our sympathy. May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY The members of Lodge No. 32, Victoria, wish to extend their sincere sympathy to the bereaved tnmily of our departed lodge brother JOSEPH W. BARTOSH, 84, of Rt. 2, Box 43, Victoria, Texas, who died at 1 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 1980 at a local rest home after a lengthy illness.

Brother Bartosh was born 25 April 1895 in Lavaca County and had lived in Victoria since 1924. He was a retired machinist with the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Brother Bartosh was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 32.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Mary Bartosh who died 24 September 1964.

Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. C.J. Scherlen and Mrs. Emma McGee, both of Victoria; a son, Allen Bartosh of Houston; a stepson, E.R. Lichnovsky of Victoria; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Thursday at McCabe-Carruth Funeral Home Chapel.

The body lay in state at St. Mary's Catholic Church 'Friday from 9 .a.m. until time of the services.

Funeral services were then conducted at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Casimir Jarzombek officiating. Interment followed in Resurrection Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Michael A. Bartosh, Ronnie W. McGee, Richard J. Scherlen, Paul Raaz, Alvin Jurasek and Harold 0.

Brother Lehde was born 3 August 1901 in Burleson County, the son of the late Henry Lehde and Vlasta Dusek Lehde.

He had lived in Burleson County and Caldwell all his life. He was a Mobil Service Station operator for 40 years.

He was a member of the Caldwell Methodist Church, The SPJST Lodge No. 17 of Novy Tabor, the Sons of Hermann Lodge and Woodmen of the World. He was married to Lydia Veiss on 2 February 1943 in Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lydia Lehde of Caldwell; and one sister, Mrs. Josephine Steele of Caldwell.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m.

Friday, February 22nd in Phillips-Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Joe Ed Lamb, pastor of the First United Methodist Church; and the Rev. Emelian Foltyn of St. Mary's Catholic Church officiating.

Interment was in Restever Memorial Park Cemetery in Bryan.

Brother Havel was born 19 July 1897 in Burleson County in the New Tabor community. He had lived all his life in Burleson County. He was married to Mary Vavra on 28 November 1922 in Bryan.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mary Havel of Caldwell; one son, Joe Havel of Caldwell; one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Pauline) Phelps of Caldwell; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Tom (Milady) Vajdak of Caldwell.

Funeral services for Brother Havel were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 2nd in Phillips...Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Henry E. Beseda, pastor of the Austin Brethren Church, officiating.

Bob Vasek, Lutheran minister and grandson of Sister Vasek, assisting. Burial was in Highland Memorial Cemetery, under the direction of Kinney Funeral Home.

Her grandsons served as pallbearers.

Born 24 May 1885 in Lavaca County, Texas, Sister Vasek lived in Jones County since 1906. She married Charlie Vasek 21 November 1905 at St. John, Texas. They farmed 10 miles south of Stamford until his death in 1966. In 1970 Sister Vasek moved to town.

Brother Naplava is survived by' daughter and son-in-law, Gladys and Rudolph Dybala, Houston; sons and daughters-in-law, John William and Iona Naplava, Palacios; Dan Stanley and Verna Mae Naplava, Houston; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Services were held April 21, 1980 at Earthman's Fannin Chapel with addresses by Sister Mildred Holeman, President, Lodge No. 88 and Brother Louis Hanus, District V Director.

Interment was in Rosewood Memorial Cemetery.

K pfilditosti 50 let od umrti profesora a vedce Jaroslava Jana Hrdiny (1871-1930) vzpomelime tohoto genia Ceskeho pfivodu, kter9 s yjm Melanin' a vedeskjtmi dily polozil zaklady dnegni kyberneticke vedy.

Use of capital letters: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English.

Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1968.

Consequently, days of the week and month are NOT capitalized.

NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is, names of person, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations), titles of books, films, etc. take capitals. Ex.: Karel Dvofik. Wilsonovo Dunaj, Anglican, Cechy, Smetanova opera "Prodani nevesta" etc., and Nage fimsko-katolicki eirkev, Veliki slovanski podporujici jedno ta.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vis, Vim, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person.
