From The Editor Desire it or not our XXIII convention, will be here like the weather; we cannot stop it. In that connection, your editor wishes to Again stress the importance of our lodges sending their contributions to the convention issue as early as possible; time is getting too short! Remember that that particular copy is supposed to be twice as large as the regular weekly copy of the Vestnik and, therefore, will take twice as much time to compose and compile. Please send in your copy immediately! *** We hope to catch up on our delayed copy in this and next week. We are publishing items which, we think, take preference and have delayed some which are past occasions. We have, also, had more requests for advertising than we can cover or take care of and are doing our best to please all who call us or write to us. Remember to vote May 3rd. *** This is our last chance to remind you that May 2nd, 3rd, and 4th is the annual Czechfest in Rosenberg; May 3rd and 4th is the Polka Festival in Ennis and the same weekend the "Moravanka" from Brno, Czechoslovakia appears at SPJST Lodge No. 187, Round Rock, Texas May 2nd (a Friday) and the Royal Ballroom, 1639 So. Buckner Blvd. in Dallas Saturday and Sunday, May 3rd and 4th.

May 1st the Moravanka of Czechoslovakia will be appearing at the Community Center in Victoria.

The main thing is: collect all you will need at the conventions and have it ready to go when that weekend in June rolls around; you will need your material at that time!

The mark on the forehead: Two brothers, convicted of stealing sheep, were branded on the forehead with the letters S.T., meaning "Sheep Thief."

One of the brothers was unable to bear the stigma, and tried to bury himself in a foreign land. But men asked him about the strange letters, so he kept on wandering restlessly, and at length, full of bitterness, died and buried far from home.

The other brother said to himself: "I can't run away from the fact that I stole

As years passed, he built a reputation for intergrity. One day a stranger came and saw the old man with the letters on his forehead. He asked a native what they signified.

"It happened a great while ago," said the villager. "I've forgotten the particulars, but I think the letters are an abbreviation of "Saint.' " Evidently this native was more of a sensible diplomat than many of us are!

LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members: The SPJST Lodge No. 66 held their meeting Sunday, April 20th, with President Henry West conducting the meeting.

The members recited the pledge of allegiance and lodge motto.

In roll call of lodge officers, all were present, except vice president, Brother Daniel Nors and treasurer, Brother Robert Pavelka, both coming in later, due to other commitments.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the March meeting. They were accepted as read.

Sister Darlene Engelke read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held Wednesday night, April 2nd. The Entertainment Committee asked for funds to use for entertainment.

The committee has been operating on funds left from the Christmas allowance and petty cash. It was voted to give the committee $500 toward other entertainment they plan to have later.

The quarterly reports were made by Linden Hall treasurer, Brother Emil Hanus; Linden Hall secretary, Brother Frank Miller and ticket chairman, Brother Frank Parma. These were Nery good detailed reports.

Sister Libbie Parma gave the youth club report. The youth did not have a meeting Sunday. They had their meeting Tuesday night, April 15th, due to several of the youth members having other commitments to go to. Sister Parma attended the District III meeting at Lodge No. 35, Elk, Sunday, April 13. We wish to congratulate Tena Urbanek, second place winner in the 'Miss SPJST' contest.

Congratulations to Charlotte Banik, the winner from District III, who will be our representative at the SPJST Convention at San Antonio in June.

6 Sister Parma said the club is still collecting empty cigarette packages, Dr. Pepper bottle caps, and Campbell labels plus aluminum cans. They are collecting them for some charitable projects. Your help is appreciated. The youth members plan to have some program for the May meeting.

There was a discussion on the salary paid to the youth leader. It was voted to give our youth leader an increase in salary, starting back to January, 1980. It was also voted to increase the salaries of the assistants as of January 1, 1980.

Brother Leon Hensel reported the Auditing Committee had audited all lodge books. They were all in good order.

Brother George Shilling, Entertainment Committee chairman, reported that, following the meeting, there would be chips, popcorn and beverages served.

For the May meeting, in honor of Mother's and Father's Day, the social will be a noon meal starting about 1 p.m. consisting of fried chicken. The ladies are asked to bring a vegetable or salad dish and a dessert.

The May 17th (dance schedule) , a wedding dance, has been cancelled. This date will be a regular dance, with the Jodie Mikula Band playing.

There was more discussion on the 1981 Christmas party and members' dance one plan: to have our regular Christmas party on Saturday, as usual, but not have a Christmas dance the following Saturday; leave this date until a later date, say in the spring. With so many things on at this time of the year and so close to the Christmas holidays, we feel a later date will be better and will not conflict with other events. The other plan is to combine the Christmas party and dance on the same date. In order to have the time for both, we would have to start the party early in the afternoon, in order to have the meal, program and Santa's visit, and to start the dance early in the evening. The Entertainment Committee prefers that we have our Christmas party as we have been doing; then later in the year, have the dance so everyone can come and enjoy it at a more leisurably time. This was tabled until the May meeting, but we want you .members to think about it because you Know, our membership is increasing and there is only so much time to have these events, therefore, we need to plan a new system in order to take care of the members and still have the time to enjoy each event: the party and the dance. We hope to work these plans out in order for our Christmas to make plans to hire a band for the dance and to work out a program for the Christmas party. This is for the year 1981. We need your help and

cooperation in order to plan for everyone's satisfaction. Think about it!

The Health Committee Report --- Sister Agnes Mazanec was not present so there was no report.

We do wish to send our sympathy to Sister Johnny Dennis on the loss of her husband, and to the Reuben Arndt family on the loss of his father, T.H. Artildt of Lott, Texas. May these loved ones rest in eternal peace.

Congratulations to the Larry Pankoniens on the arrival of a baby boy.

LODGE NO. 28, EAST BERNARD Dear Members: Another month has passed. It seems this year is "roaring" by like the proverbial "winter winds" we have been having lately. We are one month away from our convention and it seems like yesterday we had six (6) months to go.

Sunday, May 4th, at 2:30 p.m. CDT will be one of the last two meetings our lodge will have before the convention. We, the lodge officers, ask that those of you members who are, in anyway, interested in what will take place in the convention, be present at the May and June meetings.

Our April meeting, on the 13th, went as well as could be expected. The discussion on the By-Law changes were rather lengthy but were necessary.

A report on window repair costs was given which shook some of the members

to their roots. I, myself had to "suck air" so to speak, when first reading these cost estimates. As always is said, "hindsight" is better than "foresight" but had the previous committees, in charge of the building, (those after the Novosad-Foitik Committee) had done their job better and had taken care of the building like it should have been done, these expenses would not have had to come up. Other reports were given and accepted.

The door prize was won by John Kelner.

Br. Lupik, our secretary, urged that, as many as could should attend the District VI meeting on the 20th, they did.

The "Kaffe Klatsch", after the meeting, went well and those present enjoyed themselves to a point that time went by very quickly. The lodge furnished the drinks and the sandwiches.

Sisters Sperlik, Brdecka, Luquette and Nezval added to the fame.

The District VI meeting, on the 20th, moved well with many delegates, to the convention, being present. To enumerate more fully, at this point in time, would take a few more pages which time and space will not permit. We were glad that the Supreme Lodge saw fit to send Br. Leonard Mikeska and family to the meeting. As always, we were glad to see our two friends from West, Br. and Sr. Sefcik.

To the faithful, see you on the 4th of May. Oh yes, as always, "there will be a gathering of the clan" after the meeting, meaning our members, of course.

President Bohac is pointing to the new emblem on the new entrance to the Lodge No. 80 home building in Holland, just added on recently. [This lodge will hold its annual picnic Sunday, May 25th- -Editor] made by Frankie Pajestka, Jr., and approved that the ladies' rest rooms be painted; also, it was voted and approved by a majority vote to get a chemical to kill the vegetation on the south side of the hall, which has already been done.

Next order of business was to start making arrangements for our annual picnic, which will come on the 4th

Sunday in May. Further plans will be discussed in our meeting Sunday, May 4th, so all you members of Lodge No. 80, make it a point to come to the meeting on the above date.

Going back to our annual picnic, this is an annual affair here at Holland SPJST since 1949, when we built our first hall.

It was on the 4th Sunday in May, 1949.

We had made elaborate plans for that day; also, a lot of meat was ordered to be barbecued for the occasion and paper ribbons were strung all over the place.

Inside and outside Joe Patek and his orchestra from Shiner was to provide music for the evening and night dance.

This was brought to my attention, that this was the first time that the Joe Patek Orchestra played that far north from Shiner, Texas.

But here's what happened on that fateful Sunday morning of our opening: about 8 or 9 o'clock storm clouds started to build up in the north and by 10 a storm blew in from the northwest. There went all our ribbons and decorations, so our hopes for a grand opening were dimmed, but, dear members, by 11 a.m., the storm clouds drifted south.

The sky cleared, and we had a beautful day.

Believe it or not, we sold out of everything. At that time I was on the Entertainment Committee and we sold 702 admission tickets at $1 and I think Pateks' charges were $150 for the evening and night dance.

Dear members and friends, this is the origin of our annual picnic here in Holland, Texas.

We hope that you keep us in mind and try to be our guests on the 4th Sunday in May of this year, which is on the 25th day of May. Oh yes, I want to mention that the Joe Patek Orchestra will be one of the bands that will provide music for the above occasion. More details about the picnic next month.

Going back to our regular meeting, after all the things pertaining to the meeting wee over, President Bohac called on Edwin Adamek, president of

8 Lodge No. 29, who was our guest to say a few words. Brother Adamek complimented our lodge and spoke a few words in favor of his candidacy for the office of District II director.

At this time I would like to dwell a little on the well-being of our SPJST Fraternal Organization.

I had the honor to serve as local president of our lodge for 15 years.

During most of these years, it was when Brother Marek was the president of the Supreme Lodge, a supreme master in fraternalism. May he rest in peace.

There was Brother Joe B. Hejny, the vice president of the Supreme Lodge, and master of the Insurance Department of our organization. It was during his time in office that the organization made great strides in the sales of insurance.

May he also rest in peace.

In addition there were: Brother Chupick, Brother Urbanovsky, Brother Zabcik and Brother Kacir; these were, and are wonderful men. To them we should be forever grateful for their many accomplishments they have done for our SPJST. Now, to comment on the present set-up of the officers of the Supreme Lodge, I am sure that the present officers picked some of the knowledge from their predecessors. First, the present president, Brother Nick A. Morris, a brilliant man of knowledge and forwardness, and a very likable human being. He is making us a good president.

We have Bernie Gebala, our vice president. He was selected to that position after the death of Brother Hejny. A young man of great ability and also in the Insurance Department.

Bernie, we love you.

Then we have Brother Leonard Mikeska, our secretary-treasurer, and a hard-working young man. Brother Leonard, with all that work in your department, I don't see how you can cope with it all, but you do.

Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr., another young man of great ability. He is making us a good financial secretary of the SPJST. Of course, we have Brother Reuben Lesikar, our legal adviser, who sees to it that everything is done right legally.

Oh yes, there we have the editor of the Vestnik, Brother Rudy Sefcik and his pretty wife, Sister Sefcik. Those folks are doing a good job with the Vestnik.

Therefore, sister and brother delegates, the 23rd Convention will be here soon.

Don't forget to support the above-mentioned officers when election time rolls around at the convention.

President Hlavaty called the meeting to order and, after reciting the pledge of allegiance, he asked for a roll call of officers: all were present. I had another commitment that day and could not be present, but my notetaker was faithful.

There were no new members and Financial Secretary Daniel Roznovsky gave no report of finances.

Treasurer Inez Greenlees read her report and all seemed to be in order.

Secretary Patricia Sill read the minutes and also correspondence received since the last meeting. A letter of resignation was received and read from Bob Betik.

Brother Bartz reported that bar prices in Sundowner Club have been lowered considerably to accommodate members and asked that everyone come out and enjoy themselves. At our April meeting which was held on the 14th, the members stood in a moment of silent tribute to departed members Susan Jo Bohac, Wayne George Tanguay, Adolph L.C. Tannich, and Jaime Denise Zimerman.

Visitors present were Mrs. Albina Hilsher and Clarice Keith.

Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg reported on the very successful Easter Egg Hunt. She gave special thanks to Jurica Egg Company for their generous donation of eggs.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox announced that the Big Band music of Ed Gerlach will be at the Chandelier Ballroom on May 3. Advance tickets, $7.50 per person, will go on sale Friday, April 18th. The Entertainment Committee will have a Mother's Day Special for the Vrazel's dance on May 10th. All mothers will be admitted for $1 each.

Another big event will be a Battle Dance on our Annual Splash Day on June 1st.

The Joe Patek and Lee Roy Matocha Orchestras will be playing from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Brother John Hilsher announced that a fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings will be served on Splash Day. Dramatic Club President Marceil Malak informed the members that the English play has been postponed to some time in the fall. There will also be a Czech play in November.

District Sales Representatives Evelyn Mikeska reported that the top sales people for March were J.M. Skrabanek, Della Kadlecek, and Helen Hegwood in that order.

Sister Naomi Spencer was elected as an additional delegate from Lodge No. 88.

9 The only member on the sick list was John Swanberg. It was announced that Clara and Thomas Jecmenek were celebrating their 55th Anniversary on April 14, Ann and Gus Urbanovsky were celebrating their 32nd. Donors for the evening were Ellen and Ed Miculka in honor of their first anniversary.

Sister Tillie Helmcamp spoke of the tragic death of our member Susan Bohac, daughter of Margaret and Frank Bohac, telling briefly about her remarkable personality - always smiling and thinking of others. She made a motion recommending that the board make a donation in memory of Susan to her favorite flower beautification project in Austin. The motion passed unanimously. Brother Louis Hanus elaborated on what a beautiful person Susan was and told about the plaques she worked on for District V honorees.

Door prizes were won by Royal Warnasch, George Taake, Bernice Wahlberg, Mary Frances Wahlberg, and a special prize by Joe Elzner.

Dear Members and Friends: It feels as if summer is creeping upon us.

Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our vice-president, Brother Don Steinman.

The members stood for a moment of silent tribute to our deceased Sister Mary Frances Burda.

All reports were approved as read.

Brother Steinman gave a report on the District III meeting. Several of us attended this meeting which we all enjoyed. The food was delicious and everyone was so warm. Our lodge will host the fall District III meeting.

Our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Clevland, and her assistant, Sister Carrie Milan, attended the State Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde, Saturday. Sister Milan gave a report on that meeting. The youth club meeting was held Sunday a week ago.

We thank you all for the big clean-up preceding the meeting. Our dance was a full house and Jerry Max Lane will be back on May 10th.

We all enjoyed Sister Eddie Lee Powell.

Our next falling on Mother's meeting Day, the m eeting will be preceded by a dinner at 2 p.m. You are to bring a covered dish, salad or pastry.

Sister Jeanie Mason was our door prize recipient.

We all wish a speedy recovery to Brother Don Laymance who had emergency surgery in an Austin, Texas hospital last week.

Congratulations to Brother Emil Milan whose boys took first place in the Texas High Schools' Gymnastics Championships.

Everyone is looking forward to the Moravanka Thursday. The meeting adjourned to refreshments and a social.

Our April meeting was called to order

by President David Storm.

After the pledge of allegiance and roll call of officers, we went into our business discussion.

A motion was made and approved by the membership that we start having our monthly meetings at the homes of our lodge members, until we have a lodge home of our own. It was the feeling of our members present, that we could use the monthly rent for a better cause.

Our May meeting will be held promptly after the end of our slow pitch base-ball tournament Sunday, May 4th, at Sue Haswell Park. Hosts for the June, July and August meetings are June Derek and Jane Schultz, 3501 Tanglewood Drive in Bryan. In July hosts will be Ernest and Billie Wentrcek, 406 Tee Drive in Bryan; and the August hosts will be Joe and Mary Novosad on Tabor Road in Bryan.

I am sure that these brothers and sisters will go all out to provide a good fellowship period after the meetings, so let's plan to be present in numbers to show our appreciation for their efforts.

It was also agreed on to have our annual picnic Saturday, September 6th at the fellowship grounds on Tabor Road, with a dance following the daytime activities.

Don Helton is heading the project and will need much help to make it a success, so let's give him our support.

I have written in the past, in the Vestnik that Pilsen, Czechoslovakia was liberated by the United States Army on May 5th, 1945. I would like to include a report by one of the members of the Second Infantry Division who took part in the liberation of Pilsen, Dr. J.P. Wakefield.

Dear Members and Friends: Lodge No. 133, San Antonio held their regular meeting Sunday, April 20th at the hall located at 1505 S. Gevers St. The meeting opened promptly at 2 p.m. with the president leading the membership in the pledge of allegiance; also a moment of silence for our departed members and, especially, remembering our Brother Alois Dressler who passed away this month.

The roll call of officers was made by the secretary; all officers were present. On the sick report, it was reported that Sister Marta Harbort is now at home from the hospital and improving; also Sis. Marie Blanar has been released from the hospital and now is' a resident at the Normandy Nursing Home on Rice Road.

President Matula spoke on the progress of the convention, and mentioned that all the details are on schedule. The meeting May 18th will be short and most of the time will be allocated to brief all the committees on their responsibilities during the convention. It is important that all members come to the meeting. This is what we call putting the icing on the CAKE and we need you there for your comments and ideas.

As a senior at Iowa State College on Pearl Harbor Day, I was called to active duty as a Reserve Officer (ROTC) in the Field Artillery and assigned to the 38th F.A.Bn. Second Infantry Division, Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After ten months of training, we were convoyed to County Armagh, North Ireland. In May of 1944 we shipped out to Cardiff, Wales, where we set sail across the English Channel May 5th, 1944 for a D-Day assault on Omaha Beach at St. Laurent-Sur-Mer, France.

There seemed no doubt in our naive minds that we were soldiers of liberation and freedom. Most of all European nations were victims and suffering from tyranny and torture of the Nazi Regime under Adolph Hitler, (we believed), but, much to our dismay, such did not quite appear to be the case with people we had seen as yet.

To us, our European acceptance left much to be desired. The British, our long-time and best ally, treated us something like an undesired in-law and or Hollywood outlaws. They seemed, at best, to be caustic, acrimonious, sarcastic and to some degree resentful of our presence. We were, they said, overpaid, overfed, oversexed, and over here.

Surely, we felt, the French would be more receptive to us in our cruse for liberation, but, again, such did not appear to be the case. They seemed to be sulking , and emotionally crushed, hurt with some degree of subtle vindication and, so, we couldn't wait for D-Day to arrive; now perhaps we should go back, as I shall never forget the first Frenchman I saw on Omaha Beach. He did not seemed oppressed, but looked at me as though to say: "Go back, leave us alone," or as one put it: "You Americans, you come over here, win a military victory, but not a WAR." As the war went on, many often wished they had taken the advice and desire of this man.

Wednesday, April 30, 1980 As we fought through Germany the populace seemed reluctant, devious and skeptical with some degree of hearing of our morals and motivations. I am not sure, to this day, there is complete trust in us and the feeling is mutual, I am sure. After the battle at Leipzig, Germany had been won, we were told to halt; we would meet the Russians. Before this happened, we were ordered to travel, under darkness, to another country unknown to but a few in Division Headquarters. When we halted we were in a position to fire in the southern outskirts of Pilsen, Czechoslovakia.

Little did we know that this was to be our final gun position on the European Continent for World War II. Most of us had scarcely heard of this small land-locked country. A nation of 16 million industrious, efficient, intelligent and trustful people with their own language and a United States culture not unlike our own. As we convoyed in trucks from the Czechoslovakian border to Pilsen, we knew we were finally among friends, with respect, regard and love and with mutual adoration and admiration for each other, not only as soldiers of liberation but for just being plain Americans. There was something magnetic about the faces of these happy, wonderful people who seemed to not only appreciate our mere presence in their country but something even deeper: our culture and philosophy, of regard for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Surely, all along our combat trail, we would have our day, and this was it.

Nothing could have been more appropriate and climactic for a combat division who had fought from Omaha Beach, Normandy, Brest, the Battle of the Bulge, Germany and finally, Czechoslovakia, with nothing more than a mere paucity of publicity and pittance of recognition both here and at home in the USA. V-E Day celebrations with our Czech comrades was more than spirits of beverage, it was spirit of brotherhood and democracy. Few of us could speak their language but more of them spoke English even under Nazi tyranny, but, we knew that real trust and regard was mutual, for we could see it in their eyes.

These feelings became more apparent as they opened their hearts and homes to us. We had finally found our true brothers and sisters in this remote and unfortunately-isolated country (geographically) to the United States of America. We enjoyed together, parades, victory ceremonies, dinners, celebrations, dances.

Truly the one big bright spot in our European Theater Combat trail was

11 Czechoslovakia when the Second Infantry Division was ordered to return to the USA it was with mixed emotions and tears in many eyes, but our hearts shall always remain in Czechoslovakia until the day we die. For they were great friends of democracy that they had enjoyed for years between World War I and World War II, under their Republic Constitution and President Eduard BeneK. Having traveled throughout and around the world, I am certain of one thing: That, of all the people of the world, paradoxically, the one who respects, regards and loves us as the greatest, is the one we have done the least for is Czechoslovakia. So, now, and till eternity, Vive Freedom, Democracy, and Czechoslovakia.

I hope that many of you brothers and sisters will agree with me that Dr. J.P. Wakefield is correct in his summation of Czechoslovakia.

Our monthly lodge meeting Monday, April 14 was a lively one with new ideas for 1980. Thanks to Sister Marceil Malak for the presentation of a budget plan for 1980. We also were entitled to one additional delegate to the convention and Sister Naomi Spencer was elected for that post; now we have 71 delegates for the 1980 SPJST Convention. Brother Joe Elzner, elected in the annual meeting as delegate, resigned for health reasons and, in his place, alternate Herbert Huber was named.

As usual, many birthdays were announced and three wedding anniversaries: Gus and Ann Urbanovsky, 32 years (Ann is active on the Social Night Committee); 55 years for Tom and Clara Jecmenek (both look very good and can outdance anyone), and one year already for Ed and Ellen Miculka; the happy couple donated the refreshments for the social after the meeting. "Happy Birthday" song rang out from the assembly and best wishes to the lovely couples.

Marian Kadlecek is a valuable member of the Uni-Oil Co. as a baseball player covering the third base. Playing on Tuesday, she met with an accident due to trying to steal a base after a two-base hit. Sliding into second base, she injured her ankle which put her in

Georgie Zaludek visited the Veterans Hospital to visit her brother-in-law Leanard Hudgins, who is undergoing treatments. While there, Georgie roamed around and located a friend, John Chladek, being there also for treatments. Some of you will remember John Chladek who was an ardent Sokoli with my two brothers, John and Frank Dvorak, and my husband, Frank and the team included Jerry Vodehnal and Frank Rachac. These six men attended many Sokol competitions in the state and won several trophies. Those were the days when we were young. Best wishes to both for good health.

The delegates' meeting on Monday, April 21st was attended by most delegates and several other lodges from District Five. We were honored by the presence of our SL Vice-President Bernie Gebala and State Field Manager Gene McBride. The next meeting will be held Monday, May 5th at 7:15 p.m.

Brother J01111 Naplava, Sr., age 93, passed away at 9 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 1980 in a local hospital. Brother John Naplava became a member of Lodge 88 in 1911. His wife, Annie Frances, preceded him in death in October 1971. Funeral services were held Monday, April 21st at 2 p.m. at Earthman Fannin Chapel, with. addresses by Lodge No. 88 President Mildred Holeman and District V Director Louis Hanus4 Interment was in Rosewood Memorial Cemetery. Surviving him are: daughter, Gladys Houston; two sons, John William and Stanley Naplava, both of Houston; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Fred H. Buri sang and pallbearers were all brothers from Lodge No. 88: Stephen Kelly, Vladimir Bily, Miroslav Bily, Fred H. Buri, John Bily and F.A. Kadlecek. Our sincere sympathy to the surviving family. May he rest in peace.

Saturday, May 3rd, the Big Band Sound of Ed Gerlach will entertain at Lodge No. 88. The mothers will be honored at the dance on Saturday, May 10th with music by Vrazels. Our annual Hawaiian Dance will be Saturday, June 21st. Tickets will go on sale Friday, May 30th; admission will be $7.50 per person. The annual Blue Room Party will be held June 1st on a Sunday.

Admission will be $10 per person. This includes cocktails, dinner and dance from 4 to 9 p.m. This affair by the Blue Room Committee always is a successful party.

He struckout 6 and walked 3 batters in a superb performance on the mound.

Our Saturday, April 5th games, were rained out and we did not play a tournament game, until Saturday, April 12th at 9 a.m. We played the Cardinals and we were clobbered by a score of 9 to 1, because we just didn't have a good game at bat or afield. Roy Andrews was the losing pitcher allowing 6 hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts and received poor support afield by the team.

Hitters were Dan Palm with a single, Don Jarma with a homerun, Mark Hammond, a single; Don Lennox, a double and Randy Christian, a sacrifice hit.

Upon conclusion of the above game, we played again at 10:30 a.m. against Sarge Construction and we fared a little better because we won by a score of 5 to 3.

Tommy Yates hurled a fine game allowing 3 runs, 7 hits, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.

Leading hitters included Dan Palm with a triple and a single, Rick Fountain, a walk; Don Jarma, a single; Mark Hammond, a single; Danny Yates, a single and 2 walks; Tommy Yates, a single; Jerry Zabojnik, a walk. We started playing again at 12 noon against Dallas Metros and in the third inning, the rains came, thus cancelling the game, postponing it to Saturday, April 19th at 11:30 a.m. Our opponent again was Dallas Metros and we were beaten by a score of 2 to 1. Lionel Schulz hurled

a fine game allowing 2 unearned runs, 3 hits, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. We gave away the game in the 5th inning because two errors resulted in two unearned runs, and we also failed to hit when we really needed them the most.

Hitters were Don Jarma, a single; Mark Hammond, a walk:' Danny Yates, a single and a walk; Roy Andrews, a single; Jeff Burton, 2 walks; and Tommy Yates, a single.

We ended up winning 4th place, however, we were eliminated from the tournament.

We opened play in our regular season League Play on Tuesday night, April 15th, with an 8 to 2 win over the Sarge Construction team. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 2 runs, 7 hits, no walks and 8 strikeouts.

Our April meeting was well-attended and we had several guests present, but I failed to get their names.

Mary Saldana sat in as vice president for Bernadette Svacina who was in Wisconsin visiting her daughter and family.

Everyone is supposed to bring a gift of some type to our next meeting (unwrapped), something you have around the house and we will play a game after the meeting.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Joyce Tesar, 011ie Walker, Gertrude Johnston and Alene Kercho. We wish all of them many more.

Mary Saldana" donated an apron she made and it was woi by Rose Million.

Hostesses for our meeting will be Lottise Oujesky and Mary Ann Krivanek.

Dear Members and Friends: First, I would like to apologize to Sisters Eleanor Svacek and Evelyn Spacek for getting their names mixed up in my last report. Sister Eleanor Svacek won the door prize and Sister Evelyn Spacek was our new member at our March meeting.

I will try to do better next time.

At our April meeting we had about 60 present with Flora Koci becoming a new member and Officer Kirkpatrick and his assistants, Sylvia Flores, Maurine Howard and Warren St. John, as visitors. Officer Kirkpatrick presented a very interesting and informative program on protection against rape. The men were invited to listen in on the program.

It was reported that Sister Farek had been in the hospital but was at home now and doing better. We hope that she will continue to do so.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Minnie and Robert Ruzicka and hope they have many more. Sister Mary Botick won the door prize.

Our next meeting will be May 8th.

Sisters Bessie Prochaska, Anne Belato, Albina Kuban, Eleanor Svacek and Annie Langer will be the hostesses with Tena Meislohn as paying hostess.

Please, keep in mind our trip to Fairfield, June 19th. There are 2 vacancies, so if you plan to go and have not signed up, do so soon. This trip will take the place of our June meeting.

FESTIVAL PLANNED IN VICTORIA

The third Czech Festival in Victoria has been set for Sunday, June 29, 1980 starting at 11 a.m.

It will be held at the Community Center, 2905 East North St., Victoria, Texas. Dinner will be served starting at 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. consisting of sausage and trimmings. A kolache booth will be opened throughout the afternoon.

There will be an auction, country store and cake walk. Sausage sandwiches will be sold in the afternoon, and the beer garden will be open.

Entertainment will be for everyone throughout the day. From 2 to 2:30 p.m., the Pflugerville Deutschen Folk Saengers from Pflugerville, Texas will sing and from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. the Victoria Czech Singers will sing; from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. will be a battle dance presenting the Leo Majek Orchestra from Corpus Christi and the Vanek Polka Band of Victoria.

LODGE NO. 32, VICTORIA The SPJST Lodge No. 32 of Victoria is selling tickets for the Moravanka Ensemble performance. A nineteenmember group, the Moravanka hails from Czechoslovakia; they will be playing traditional brass polka music that our Czech ancestors played in years past. This is the second tour of the Moravanka in the United States, and it is indeed fortunate that this ensemble will be appearing in the area. Mrs. Ella Arnold (512-573-2330) and Mrs. Henrietta Vanek (512-578-2687) from Victoria are in charge of selling advance tickets. The Moravanka is appearing May 1, at the Victoria Community Center. The Moravanka will be performing in 9 or 10 locations in Texas, with 35 concert dances across the United States.

STANLEY BROZ To the Members and Delegates of SPJST District IV: Being your District IV director has been a privilege and honor representing the entire SPJST Society and District IV, to the best of my ability.

I wish to thank all for the confidence and trust you placed in me in the past 8 years. At this time, I am asking to be your District IV director for another term.

Music and dancing will be the order of all three days. The music, provided by fifteen bands, are scheduled to play and the entertainment will be non-stop. Two big dances, on Friday and Saturday nights, will feature some of Texas' best-known Czech orchestras.

Czech Fest is organized and operated by local civic, service, fraternal and church organizations. More than thirty such organizations will be working around the clock to keep the food concessions and special event's rolling at a steady pace.

The big spring festival was started five' years ago to showcase the Czech traditions of the Fort Bend County area and was an instant success. Admission to Czech Fest is one dollar ($1.00) for adults and children fourteen and under are free. All dances, musical entertainment and special events are free of charge.

FEATURES ROSENBERG-RICHMOND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 4120 Ave. H., Rosenberg, Tx. 77471 Sponsors of the fifth annual Fort Bend County Czech Fest are bracing for the largest crowd on record when the gates at the County Fairgrounds at Rosenberg swing open for the May 2-3-4 run of Texas' largest Czech festival.

The dates for the big festival have been moved back to enhance chances for good weather and a record crowd of over fifty thousand is expected. The fairgrounds at Rosenberg are located just off US 59 some thirty miles southwest of Houston.

The fun begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2, and continues through Sunday night. Daytime activities will include a wide variety of special events, singing, dancing, gymnastics demonstrations, clowns, kiddie rides and more.

From The State Youth Director TO THE LODGE YOUTH LEADERS: Most of you know that the scrapbooks will not be judged at the convention this year, but will be judged at the Dist.

YADs as always. However, it was suggested by the DYCs that some of the youth leaders may want to bring their scrapbooks and/or posters to the convention for general viewing. This will be a fine idea. This will give the delegates and visitors a chance to view your progress and perhaps they would have time to look them over better than at other times.

These scrapbooks and posters should not be the current ones you are working on for the YADs this year, but perhaps the older books that are finished. This will be a good time to show them off and give the people a chance to look them over.

I will arrange for a place for them to be displayed and viewed during the convention in the convention center. If you would like for your youth club's scrapbook and/or poster to be at the convention (there will be no competition) you need to make arrangements for someone from your lodge to be responsible for getting them to the convention and taking them back. I would like to see a lot of these books and posters there for the people to see more about what we are doing in the Youth Department.

Cindy Tepera, 1st runner-up 'Miss SPJST' of District VII. Her speech title was "What My Family Means To Me." Cindy recited her own poetry for her talent. Cindy is our Dist. VII Queen for 1979-80. Her Lodge No. 79 was well represented by Cindy. We are all honored to have Cindy as our queen and 1st runner-up in our district as Miss SPJST.

Carmen Mazac, member of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Mazac. Carmen played a beautiful flute solo and spoke on "Why I Am Proud To Be An American." It was so nice to have Lodge No. 133 represented by Carmen.

Her family heritage goes way back in the history of the SPJST. She is the great-granddaugther of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Miculka, longtime members of the SPJST.

Wanda Deagen of Lodge No. 107, Floresville, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Deagen. Her speech was also selected on "Why I Am Proud To Be An American." For her talent she chose an acrobatic ballet number.

Wanda represented her lodge well. A large group from Lodge 107 rode their new bus to attend the meeting and cheer Wanda on.

Pam Steiger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Steiger of Lodge No. 117, Robstown was well represented by Pam as she spoke on "Trust In Us, Believe In Us, And We Will Not Betray Your Trust." Pam played a beautiful piano solo. She has been a member of the youth club since age 6 and continues to be active, and planning to be an LIT this summer at camp.

District VII has a lot to be proud of in these five lovely girls who did a most outstanding job in both talent and speech. A comment by one judge was: "What lovely girls; this is a hard job."

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club will have its regular monthly meeting Sunday, May 4th at 2:30 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center. We will also have a program on Mother's Day. A group of people attended the District VI meeting at Lodge No. 138 in Ganado on Sunday, April 20th. Those who attended were Vicki, Jean and Marcy Dorotik, Michelle Srubar, Yvonne Krpec. Adults were Youth Leader Mrs. Jerome Dorotik and Mrs. Lad Srubar plus Mrs. Leon Krpec. The meeting was interesting. The ladies of Lodges 138 and 40 served a delicious lunch after the meeting. I would like to thank the good ladies for it. I was very happy to be there to see my uncles and aunts. The next fall District VI meeting will be held in Moravia.

Congratulations to Vicki• Dorotik; she was elected to be the flag bearer at the next district meetings.

Dear Readers, April 13, 1980, Lodge No. 107 Youth Club meeting was called to order at 3 p.m.

We discussed the District VII meeting which was held in Corpus Christi. All of us enjoyed the bus ride on our new bus.

The 'Miss SPJST' contest was held at the District VII meeting and Wanda Deagen from Lodge No. 107 was the third runner-up.

We also discussed our trip to Astroworld which we will take June 17th and come back on the 18th. We will leave about 2 a.m. and get there about 9 a.m. We will be home about 4 a.m. on the 18th. The New Braunfels Youth Club will ride on the bus with us.

Afterward we discussed the Youth Achievement Day which will be held July 27th in New Braunfels, Camp will be held from August 5th through 9th at Camp Val Verde near Waco. Everyone is getting ready and excited for a great summer of fun with the SPJST. The youth club of Lodge No. 107 is backing Bob Bayer as District VII director.

After the meeting mostly everyone boarded the bus for an outing and initiation at Hazel Bazemore Park. The new members were initiated; then we hiked through the woods and explored most all the trails. Later we ate our sack lunch and returned home.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members and Friends: We held our last regular meeting Sunday, March 30th with an Easter egg hunt following the meeting.

President Gene Skrabanek called the meeting to order. He, then, asked Mark Tepera to lead us in the pledge of allegiance and the club motto.

Secretary Sherry Skrabanek called the roll and read the minutes of the previous meeting. I do not recall the visitors' names. Please come back.

The president then asked for the treasurer's report.

We discussed the fund-raising which was held March 14th. The winners for selling the most tickets were: Juniors--Shana Patterson and Christi Wigginton; teens--Lisa Tepera and David Pechal. Thanks to all who supported this project so generously.

Our social for this month was a movie at Cinema 6.

Our next meeting will be held Monday, May 5th when we honor the high school graduates who were active youth club members in previous years.

A covered dish supper and program at 7 p.m. and the meeting at 8 p.m., will be held. You all come!

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Volna Cechie No. 135, Ennis, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother BOB MOUCKA, of Dallas, who passed away March 28, 1980, at the age of 63.

Born in Ennis February 21, 1917, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary (Gale tka) Moucka. He was reared in the Creechville Community and attended Lone Oak School.

We, the Resolution Committee, in behalf of the entire membership of Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother LAWRENCE DITTERT, who passed away Wednesday, January 30, 1980 in the Colonial Belle Nursing Home of Bellville at the age of 79 years.

Born in Cat Spring,May 21, 1980, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Dittert. He was a member of the Nelsonville SPJST Lodge No. 68 and the Bellville St. John Lutheran Church. He served as Austin County clerk for 25 years until his retirement December 30, 1970.

Funeral services were held from the St. John Lutheran Church of Bellville at 2 p.m. February 1, 1980 with Rev. William Rotter officiating. interment was at Oak Knoll Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Douglas Krueger, J.D. Kamas, Dr. James Lamp, J. Lee Dittert, Jr., Harry Pless and Oliver Stark.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Della Dittert; one son, Charles W. Dittert of Houston; sisters, Mrs. Hattie Michaelis of Bellville, Mrs. George Davis of Brownwood, Mrs. Edna Meyer of Columbus; brothers, William Dittert, Jr. of Crowley, Alfred and Andrew Dittert of El Campo and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
