Quite a bit of business is being conducted in both committees and you will be reading their reports in future issues of our Vestnik. In fact, while at the By-Law Committee meeting, a number of proposed changes were handed to yours truly for publishing in this issue and we are doing so. You are urged to read them, carefully, and think about their contents; you are a part of our SPJST Society!

*** Friendship? It's Wonderful! There is the story of a fellow who fell behind on his installments on a new television set.

Every passing week brought dunning letters - each one more heated than the last. Finally, in desperation, came the coup de grace, written to appeal to the man's sense of shame.

"What," said the letter, "would your neighbors think if we came and took away your television set?"

The response so far has stumped the finance experts. "I took the matter up with my neighbors," wrote the delinquent. "and they think it would be a lousy trick."

NEWSBRIEK Joe Koci, 69, passed away in Ft. Worth on Monday, March 3rd. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 5th, from Mt. Olivet Funeral Chapel, with burial in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. District III Director Bro. Sid Pokladnik co-officiated on behalf of the SPJST. Bro. Koci was a longtime member of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth.

4 figures for 1979, as, of 31 December 1979. Article 31 (b) of our by-laws also stipulates that the president makes periodic reports to the membership. This is the second report this year that the members, especially delegates, may want to keep for handy reference for the coming convention. (See Vestnik issue of January 2nd for the first report).

Summarizing the highlights, we see the following for 1979: Mortuary premiums collected were up 5.48 percent; income investment was up 8.45 percent.

It appears that 1979 was another good year for our Society. Regarding insurance figures for 1979 (before net), we issued a total of 3,099 certificates for $20,331,752 in life insurance. This shows the result of some hard and diligent work on the part of our sales representatives, for which we are grateful. We received fewer applications than we did the year before, but the amount of insurance involved increased. All seven districts met and exceeded their quotas in 1979.

These figures point up the fact that our sales representatives are selling larger coverage to new members and this is significant. Our average policy now amounts to approximately $6,560. This increase in the average certificate can be attributed to our emphasis on an improved training program for our sales representatives.

Since net gain is the only real measure of a company's growth, I. wish to submit that for the ,year 1979 we had a net gain of 522 members and a net increase in insurance issued of $8,818,751. These two figures are down from the previous year. This can be attributed principally to three factors: 1) Theabsence of new lodge facilities in 1979, which had dramatically affected our growth in the past few years; 2) an important factor continues to be our No. 1 economic enemy - INFLATION - which prompted a number of our members to opt for cash surrenders (terminations). We are working on alternatives to members taking the step of surrendering their policies for the cash value. Remember, when you cash surrender your policy, you have nothing left. This is a problem shared by the entire insurance industry, and not unique with the SPJST and which will not abate until the national economic picture has improved; 3) common to the entire insurance industry is a general decline in business volume, both in commercial companies and in fraternal benefit Societies. This can also no doubt be attributed to the general national economic malaise.

Compared to other fraternal Societies, these figures are nevertheless favorable, especially when you consider that we

operate only in the State of Texas. (These net figures are arrived at after subtracting the number of lapses, expirys, deaths, surrenders and maturities, all under the heading of terminations.) Also, some certificates, because of not being delivered (being substandard or applicant for one reason or another refused the certificate), and although the Insurance Department shows them as issued, did not get placed on the local lodge financial secretary's books and are not shown as a gain. These are considered lapses.

We're off to a very good start in 1980 and we hope we can maintain the momentum. A special tribute for these results goes to everyone involved in sales of insurance at all levels of our Society.

We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all these fine workers-fraternalists, both with small and big volumes in sales because without their efforts and demonstrated loyalty, this achievement would not have been possible.

Due to the on-going battle with inflation, which affects us all, a TEAM effort on everybody's part will insure our continued growth in the future.

Are you really involved?

Here are some thoughts I would like to pass on to lodge officers throughout our Society because there are two facets to insurance sales, namely, Management (Home Office and the local lodge leadership) and Marketing (actual sales).

Local lodge leadership is encouraged to be aware of and get involved in promotion and sales of life insurance. I think you will all agree that that is the lifeblood of our Society. Everything else is secondary and as a result thereof. So many lodge officers concern themselves primarily with the management and operation of the local lodge facility and that is certainly very important, but their involvement should go beyond that.

Local lodge officers should do everything possible to assist and augment the work of the local sales people - cooperating in arranging for sales training classes, urging attendance at training sessions, passing on names of prospects and leads, making sure that the works of the local sales representatives are recognized and acknowledged, and fostering trust and cooperation built on mutual respect and common goals. After all, the sales representative is going to write up a member into a particular lodge and that member's future association with the Society will be in and through that local lodge so that the two go hand in hand.

"Be Proud Of It." success will show in the local lodge and in the Society's growth. We need to realize that the sales representative cannot do without the lodge and the lodge officers and the lodge's progress cannot do without the sales representative. The two must go hand in hand and they can be most successful when they work hand in glove with each other. Local lodge officers know their membership better than anyone else and can, therefore, encourage people they consider competent to become sales representatives. We are at a slight disadvantage in that all of our sales people are part-time so we must make up this disadvantage in other ways.

It all boils down to the team effort - one helping and complementing the other.

The lodge officers (management) and the sales representatives (marketing) are not two distinct and separate parts of our operation; they go hand in hand and the more closely they work together the greater success we will enjoy.

We do not know what the immediate years ahead hold for us, but we must do what we can to insure the continued growth of new membership. That is the only road to growth. We have so much to offer - so much good to offer. We should utilize all resources available. The Home Office, under the direction of the vice president and his staff, will continue to provide training in the sales area, but that must eventually be translated into leads and actual sales. Until we come up with some other "magic" formula this is the best way to insure our progress. We really have no alternative in the face of competition and the continuing economic pressures of inflation. What do you say? Are you willing to be on the team as part of the solution?

We salute the top sales representatives for 1979 in all of the districts, based on annualized premiums. They will appear in the Vestnik after they are presented their awards at their district sales

banquets. There will also be special recognition given to the seven winners to the "Meet You At The Alamo" contest on Monday evening at the coming convention, in addition to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for 1979.

We have a total of 56,049 certificates in force as of 31 December 1979, for a total of $137,884,122 in life insurance coverage, a nice increase in both categories over 1978.

Our assets now total in excess of $27,000,000, an increase of 6 percent over 1978.

The annual net percentage gain in 1979 on our investments was 7.03 percent, vs.

6.89 percent in 1978. This net percentage figure plays a significant, role in computing our yearly camp fund allocation. (See below).

The 1980 insurance quotas have been set for the districts at the same level as for 1979. With everyone's cooperation, I'm confident we will achieve these goals.

Now, here are some more figures since my New Year's Message and Report: 8 Percent Refund To Lodges. The 8 percent refund to lodges for 1979 amounted to $152,701.94.

Our solvency ratio stands at $130.04, which constitutes $130.04 in assets for every $100 in liabilities. (It was 128.78 in 1978, so this is a nice increase.)

Our surplus fund for the protection of certificate holders is in the amount of $6,418,150.98, also an increase over 1978.

Premium Refunds. The premium refund checks sent out every month by Financial Secretary Mikulas' department to individual members through their lodges amounted to $217,220.99 for 1979, plus $5,135.25 to the lodges for postage in handling these refund checks.

(Art. 37 (y) of our by-laws).

District Youth Fund. The checks for this fund will be distributed to the district treasurers in the coming spring district meetings. This is the fund that is paid on the basis of 25 cents for every certificate in the district held by those 16 and over as of 31 December 1979, per Art. 54 (g) of our by-laws. Camp Fund Allocation. The advance camp fund allocation to each district is being computed and will soon be sent to the district youth counselors by SYD Sister Massey. This is the fund that is received by the district youth counselors, is controlled by them and disbursed by them. This year, as in years past, this fund is derived from the annual net percentage gain on the Society's investments, which amounted to 7.03 percent in 1979: This was computed on $400,000, per action of the last

Wednesday, March 12, 1980 convention and will amount to $28,120 in 1980, also an increase. A district audit committee is to audit this fund and report to the membership at least once a year.

District General Expense Fund. The Supreme Lodge contributes the sum of $250 a year to the General Expense Fund of each district, as set forth in Article 54(h) of the by-laws. This allocation should be of help to the district officers in defraying their expenses in conducting official business within their district.

This will also be given the districts in their spring meetings.

New Lodges Chartered. In 1979 there were no "new" lodges chartered as such, but there was a lodge created as the result of a merger. The new lodge is Lodge No. 186 Caldwell, which came about on November 11, 1979, as the result of a merger of Lodges 7, 116, and 120.

New Lodge Buildings. One new lodge building was dedicated in 1979 - that of Lodge 187 in Round Rock. The dimensions of that hall are the largest of any facility in the SPJST and was formally opened and dedicated on September 16, 1979.

Convention 1980. It is certainly no news to anyone now that we are in a convention year. The dates of the convention are Monday, June 9th, through Thursday, June 13th, at the Convention Center in Hemisfair Plaza in San Antonio. Lodge 133 is host and they are doing a good job of making sure that everything goes off as smoothly as possible. There will be reminders in the Vestnik from time to time about the convention.

According to the by-laws, all members of the Supreme Lodge and all standing committees must publish their reports in the Vestnik two months before the convention. This means that these reports should appear in the Vestnik issue of April 9, 1980, so watch for them.

Suggestions and proposals for amending our by-laws are on the increase, from what I hear from the By-law Committee.

That committee is also obliged to publish its recommendations in the Vestnik two months prior to the convention. If necessary, they can meet at least two weeks prior to the convention if they receive additional recommendations. In the meantime, those speaking for or against a submitted proposal should not do so after considering„ what effect the change would have on them as individuals or as members of a committee. Their only consideration should be "is it good for the Society as a whole?" Also, a change in one area of our activities and operations bears on the activities and functions of other phases;

no one portion or phase stands independently alone. They all interrelate and bear directly upon one another.

When you propose an increase in a certain allocation or a totally new expenditure, keep in mind that that expense affects other phases of our operation. There will be instances where you can't have it both ways. Also bear in mind that whatever expenditures and allocations are approved in this convention will hold for the next four years; it will not be a one-time expense.

Please keep these things in mind as you move into the period of the convention.

BY THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST SUPREME LODGE. On page 14 under "Supreme Lodge" delete the sentence "This functioning of the Supreme Lodge is divided into three departments: Administration Depart. ment, Insurance Department, and Investment Department."

(The sentence being deleted serves no purpose.)

4(a)2. Change "100" to "200" 3.. Change "100" to "200" (Note that we are suggesting no change in the initial delegate-member ratio (20-100). We feel that the time has come however, after several unsuccessful attempts, to adjust this ratio for additional delegates. With the continuing growth of our Society and the attendant increases in delegates, plus the expenses involved, we feel that it is time the delegates took a careful and objective view at this ratio.)

Article 3(g) - delete the words "A state youth director".

(Inasmuch as this person is an employee and the authority to hire this employee is covered elsewhere, it is not needed to be listed in this article. The other persons listed are professional people hired and compensated on a piece or retainer basis.

Article 3(h) - delete the words "Publication Committee" and substitute the words "Supreme Lodge".

(Since the contracts in the past have been drawn up and signed by officers of the SL, it is only logical to have the SL review them in the first place and make appropriate recommendations to the convention.)

Article 4(c) - change to read as follows: "A lodge organized 'or merged less than three years preceding the election of its delegates may elect its delegates and substitutes from among those members having attended a majority of the regular meetings from the date of its organization or merger."

(Merged lodges were not previously covered.)

Article 9, in the second paragraph, strike the words "in compliance with the wishes of the delegates". Add section (e) "voice vote".

(Self-explanatory.)

Article 20 - The Supreme Lodge endorses President Morris' proposal that the duties of the Finance Committee be assumed by the By-Law Committee. The major portion of the provisions in Article 20 should be added as (h) and (i) under Article 16 which specifies the duties of the By-Law Committee. Add provision that at the

8 committee's option at least two directors be permitted to meet with that committee.

Article 27 - Strike the words "Article 432 of the Texas Penal Code" and substitute therefor the words "Article 5996A of Revised Civil Statutes".

(Self-explanatory.)

Article 28(a) - delete the words "Chief Medical Examiner" and "or State Youth Director".

(Since these two individuals are hired by the SL, the inherent authority already exists to fill their vacancies.)

Article 31(k) - In the first sentence delete the word "head" and substitute the words "in charge". After the first sentence, add the words "and appoints the State Youth Supervisor, with the approval of the Supreme Lodge".

Wherever the words "State Youth Director" appear in the by-laws change to State Youth Supervisor". Wherever the words "District Youth Counselor or District Youth Counselors" appear change to "District Youth Supervisor or District Youth Supervisors".

(This more closely adheres to actual current practice and pin-points the president's authority. There is a difference in "head of" and "in charge". One denotes a figurehead position, the other an activist and positive role. The role of the State Youth Director is'.one of supervision, rather than "direction" — hence, the title change. Prescribed / and specific requirements must be Chet to merit the title "counselor, so in order to be consistent, it is proposed that "supervisor" be used in both references.)

Article 33(h) - Change section (h) to read as follows: "After acceptance of the state examiner's report by the entire Supreme Lodge, prepares copies thereof and mails copies to lodges and members at their request".

(There has been doubt and a question as to what use, if any, this report is to local lodges because of its length and complexity. Many may have discarded it. This still leaves open the request of this report.)

Article 36 - Re-codify present section (m) to section (n) and insert new section (m) to read as follows: "The director shall assist the vice-president, as requested, within his district regarding the sales and motivation aspects of the insurance program."

(The directors as members of the SL assist in formulating production and procedure changes within the Insurance Department. For this reason, upon

request they would be qualified to answer the "whys and why nots" and assist in the motivation in the absence of the vice president.)

Article 37(e) - delete words "medical director, state youth director".

(Same reasons as in 28(a) above).

Article 37(k) - Add the words "Application fee and" between the words "the" and "rate".

(No explanation needed) Article 37(o) - Change section (o) to read "the Supreme Lodge must provide sufficient insurance coverage for the protection of the Society".

(Article needs to be up-dated to include provision for liability insurance, etc.)

Article 38(d) - Change section (d) to read "all checks must be signed by two Supreme Lodge Officers."

(Self-explanatory) Article 39(b) - Change "66 2/3% to "75%".

(It is believed that the percentage could be increased without jeopardizing the Society's interest.)

Article 39(c) - delete the words "for full value up to $100,000" and the words "above $100,000. (Effective immediately)" .

(An attorney general's ruling invalidates 100% loans of this type.)

Article 41(b) - delete entire section (b).

(It is believed that a local lodge should pay the cost of processing a lodge building loan.)

Mrs. Thelma Hrncir, Secretary By-Laws Committee, 10610 Stonewall, Corpus Christi, Texas 78410 Dear Sister Hrncir: The Finance Committee met at the Home Office on February 16, and wish to make the folloWing recommendations: ARTICLE 54 - DISTRICTS: (H) Each district will receive an allocation of $250 per year from the Supreme Lodge to be placed in the district's general expense fund. This sum is to be used to reimburse district officers, except the District Youth Counselor and the Assistant, for travel and expenses while on official business within the district.

I) Each district will receive an allocation of $150 per district meeting from the Supreme Lodge to be placed in the District's General Expense Fund.

This sum is to be used to help the hosting lodge or lodges defray expenses for the district meeting.

So many lodges have no income or halls, and must pay a large sum for renting a hall. We think this might encourage these lodges to host a district meeting. The reason for $150 per meeting: some districts hold one meeting per year, while some hold two meetings per year.

LODGE NO. 28, EAST BERNARD Mrs. Thelma Hrncir, Secretary, SPJST By-Laws Committee, 10610 Stonewall Ave., Corpus Christi, Texas 78410 Dear Sister Hrncir: Enclosed are five (5) resolutions, voted on and passed by our lodge, proposing five (5) changes in the SPJST By-Laws. Each resolution has a title and are numbered 1 through 5 in the order they were passed. The preamble in most cases explains the problem but I will enumerate further on each resolution.

In resolution No. 1, Index, it came to my attention, while I was president of District VI, that many lodges did not follow the recommended agenda in the By-Laws because it was hard to find.

Others have told me of times when they needed an answer to a problem in a hurry and had to take fifteen minutes or more of meeting time to find the answer. In our own case it took twenty (20) minutes to find the right article because there were no page numbers to refer to. For many of us, who do not make a living from the lodge nor live the lodge 24 hours a day as many do, the By-Lws are not referred to all of the time but only on occasions when it is needed.

In resolution No. 2, word regulation, we still are a democratic society and many of our members think the word is improper. I know in my own case, when I hear the word regulations I think of the military, Nazi Germany, Geheime Staatspolizei (Gestapo), Schutzstaffel (S.S.) and things unpleasant. One thing I wish to get straight at this point, my stay in the military was not unpleasant but I heard the word regulations, one day, so much until I felt like yelling

Wednesday, March 12, 1980 "Take those regulations and shove then some place"...Some of our members are against passing any local "Rules and Regulations" because they feel that some of the members will take offense to it and really stay away from the lodge. At this point in time, we need every member we can get to attend so lodge business could be conducted.

In resolution No. 3, District Money; in our district we have over 2,000 dollars in the District Youth funds that cannot be touched and the district does not have enough money to pay for expenses when officers of the district have to be present at such functions as Youth Achievement Day. Now, the DYC, Asst.

DYC and SYD all get their expenses and meals paid for this day. Now, at this point in time, our district has five active youth clubs and adult money is footing the bill. Our proposed way of granting money to the districts would help keep the district meetings alive and help pay some of the expenses. In District V, they proposed a system to pay their expenses but this would not work in our district because many of the small lodges feel: "Since we do not attend anyway, we do not have to pay". Many districts charge for the meal that is served at the district meetings. In District VI, if you would charge, many would walk away and would not eat.

One thing, though, they will donate, if you put out a pot. This does help but does not pay the bill. In one case, I saw a man pull out a dime (10 cents) and put it into the pot--he ate for three people.

Lucky for my lodge it did not happen when we had the meeting. In our district, District VI, many of the people are twenty(20) or more years behind. I know our district is not the only one that, today, is hurting for money to hold district meetings and keep good people in office. The old saying "What is good for the goose is good for the gander" applies here too; the district adult members pay the freight for the youth so why not for themselves.

In resolutions Nos. 4 &5, about sales representatives, the local lodges need more control over the representatives and at present the Supreme Lodge has all of the say after a representative is appointed. At present our lodge has two representatives who have not made more than four (4) meetings last year.

One made one and other made three.

We have heard every excuse in the book from these two. I know that one is out for personal gain and nothing more. To back this statement, our lodge secretary asked this one to come to our February meeting and this person told the secretary that, a prospect was on the

schedule and could not attend. Now, if I had been in this situation, I would have brought the prospect to the meeting and this might have helped to make the sale.

We hope these changes can be considered even at this late date.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Guests: I am glad to report our members were entertained by the Crockett Wester­ neers this past weekend, March 1st.

When I entered the lodge all the members were standing and sang · the "Happy Birthday" song to me with a display of my picture, cakes, flowers, and gifts. It was overwhelming to me be cause this was all a surprise to me. I didn't suspect anything like that; on top of that. there stepped in Bernard M. Gebala, SL vice president with his charming wife, Evelyn, plus SL Financial Secretary Jerry J. Mikulas, Jr. and his charming wife, Betty, all of Temple. All that honor given to me was more than I could conceive.

After asking why so much honor, I was told that this was not only for my birthday but also appreciation for the work I had done for the SPJST and Lodge No. 74 in Lovelady. All the persons who recommended prospects to become members who have done this for me, will never be forgotten, that's the greatest award I have ever received.

LODGE NO. 185, NEW BRAUNFELS Dear Members: Our lodge held its meeting February 21st. President Howard Athas opened the meeting at 8 p.m. with the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

There were fifteen members and eleven children present.

The president proceeded with old and new business which was discussed at the proper time. The youth ha~e the~r .o~n meeting place to hold their activities from now on. Our president suggested that all members should talk to people about becoming members of the SPJST; also getting them to visit our lodge meetings, and for the members to call members who do not attend our meetings.

More discussion was held on Polka Fest which will be held July 20th. Gordon Hrabal was appointed to take care of the brochures that will be mailed to lodge presidents and to the public, to attend our Polka Fest. Brother Hrabal asked that we submit an ad to the Vestnik in June and July about our fest. It was voted, seconded and passed ~y the attending members. The youth will also have some activities at the fest. We are inviting all the Supreme Lodge officers to attend our annual fest.

More information will be submitted on the Polka Fest later.

Dear Members and Friends, President Claude Flippen called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m. There were 26 members and 1 visitor present.

We had the roll call of officers; 9 were present and 4 absent.

Our secretary, Sister Olga Nimtz, read the minutes from our last meeting.

They were approved as read. Our financial secretary, Sister Magdelene Iselt, gave her report. It was accepted as read. Our treasurer, Sister Mildred Horak, gave her report. It was approved as read.

We accepted 4 new members--Mary Chew, Lamar Hervey, Stuart Hervey, IV, and Arron Hervey. We welcome all of you.

With no further business to discuss we had the drawing for door prizes. The winners were, 1st-Brother Tim Krenek, 2nd-Sister Albina Milburn, and 3rd-Brother Claude Flippen. The meeting was then adjourned for "Happy Hour".

Dear Members: Lodge No. 17 held its regular monthly meeting March 2nd with all officers present.

We elected a new youth leader, she is Susan Trcalek. I feel sure Susan will do a good job.

We will have our annual barbecue April 20th. The band for the day will be

Suehs. Donny Suehs will also be treasurer for this affair. Betty Suehs will be in charge of the kitchen and will need lots of help, so if you haven't volunteered, ladies, the number to call is 567-3340. We will sell tickets on a barbecue pit (barrel homemade type), plus cash prizes. We will serve a plate lunch or you can buy at the pit by the pound. We will have social games in the afternoon, public speaking (candidates) and music. Ladies, we will also need donations of sweets.

April 27th, New Tabor will host the District I spring meeting. Ladies, again, we will need sweets. District I will select a candidate for 'Miss SPJST' and, overall, it should be an interesting meeting, so come on out.

Our April meeting has been changed to April 13th because of Easter.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY

Dear Members and Guests: I am glad to report our members were entertained by the Crockett Westerneers this past weekend, March 1st.

When I entered the lodge all the members were standing and sang the "Happy Birthday" song to me with a display of my picture, cakes, flowers, and gifts. It was overwhelming to me be cause this was all a surprise to me. I didn't suspect anything like that; on top of that, there stepped in Bernard M. Gebala, SL vice president with his charming wife, Evelyn, plus SL Financial Secretary Jerry J. Mikulas, Jr. and his charming wife, Betty, all of Temple. All that honor given to me was more than I could conceive.

After asking why so much honor, I was told that this was not only for my birthday but also appreciation for the work I had done for the SPJST and Lodge No. 74 in Lovelady. All the persons who recommended prospects to become members who have done this for me, will never be forgotten, that's the greatest award I have ever received.

God Bless all of you! I appreciate all of those who helped me gain more members. Let us continue pulling together with unity and harmony.

We were sorry to . hear Brother Lee Roy Bosak is still at the Veterans Hospital at Houston and we do wish him a speedy recovery. Sister Alice Fojtik of Guy is now recuperating at home after spending some time at the Gulf Coast Medical Centerin Wharton; also, Sister Tillie Mikeska was on the sick list but is doing better.

Brother Herbert Nowotny reported, for the Auditing Committee, that all books were found in order. The committee met at the Victor Werner's home at Rosenberg and wishes to express our appreciation to the Werners for their· responsibility. The spouses were also invited and we all had a nice evening of fellowship after auditing the books.

President Matcek reminded us that, beginning in May, we will have night meetings, so don't forget to mark this on your calendar.

Refund checks were handed out and the attendance prize was won by Winifred Susan.

Meeting adjourned for a social hour.

LODGE NO. 97, PLACEDO Dear Members and Friends: It's been a longtime since I had a letter in the Vestnik. What has urged me to write is that I read the writeup Mr. Nick Morris had, that the lodges should involve more young members in their lodges. I am saying this with experience in our Placedo Lodge when we transferred from Vlastenec Lodge No. 45 which doesn't exist anymore, they merged with Sweet Home Lodge No. 63.

From the year of 1934 that we were admitted to Placedo Lodge No. 97 until about 1952 or 1953, we didn't have a young member to hold some responsibility in our lodge. From that time our lodge was more or less on a standstill, less members were coming to the meetings. Yes, we had representa­ tives and, yes, we did get a few members here and there but they didn't and don't live here. Maybe someone may say, why didn't I do something!

You may be right, but being a younger member and trying to push ourselves in: no way! In fact we didn't know too much about it.'

I remember when there was some discussion at a meeting and I was afraid to say something. What I am trying to say is that the young members should try hard to get involved in your lodge. I have to give Brother Leo Krause big credit, by trying to teach us to be a representative, but, we were afraid; it's

13 LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The two nights of big band music by Guy Lombardo were a tremendous success. The Chandelier Ballroom was full of happy guests and everyone was having a great time. The Hosting Committee for Friday night was Henry Kite in charge with spouse, Adele; helping them were Herbert and Gazela Huber and Gus and Ann Gerlich.

Saturday night was hosted by Marion Mikes in charge and husband, Ludwig, assisted. Rudy and Celestine Darilek and Bill and Adel Hughs also assisted.

Both nights, the Chandelier Ballroom was filled with beautifully-dressed ladies and their escorts were dressed accordingly. The Hosting Committees for both nights also blended in with the surroundings. Chairman Harley Cox was around both nights.

At Table 37 a birthday was celebrated

by Brother George Butchek, born March 3rd. It was a surprise for George by friends surrounding him. Gus and Ann Urbanovsky. Vincent and Mickey Telshow, Gerald and Donna Parnell, Mrs. Lill Dorn, Sam and Doris Ricotta, proprietors of the Flower Shop on North Main. Of course, George's spouse, Mary, also was present to be in the middle of the festivities. They all wished George a happy birthday with cake and all kinds of goodies and the band played the song: "My Happiness" on request. .

Visitors, Mr. and Mrs. Delayne Schroeder from Holstein, Iowa, were one of the couples who . traveled to Germany last summer and visited their co-travelers and friends, Clifford and Jacky Layendecker here in Houston. A special reunion was arranged by Karl and Ora Nell Hassenbrack in their lovely home to have a get-together with the while group who traveled to Germany last summer. They all enjoyed the evening reminiscing events abroad; they enjoyed the close knit friendship which will last for a long time.

Recently, Arnold and Naomi Spencer enjoyed a 12-day cruise on the Stella Solars ship which sailed from Galveston and made the ports of: Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Cristobal and Colon.

The cruise was interesting having Ron Stone of TV Channel 2 as a passenger ..

Ron commended on this special cruise on the news at S p.m. This was the first of many people. The time on the ship was filled with lots of activities and passed quickly. The Spencers said this cruise could not be beat.

Brother Stanley Cmelka, age 79, passed to the unknown Wednesday.

Bernard Roemer officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Virgie Wanda Cmelka; daughter, Mary Lou Swatloski; grandchildren, Robert, Carol and Linda; two brothers, Dr. B.J. Cmelka of Sun City, Arizona and Louis Cmelka of Houston; one sister, Rose Jones of Midland, Texas; and nieces and nephews. Brother Stanley Cmelka was a devoted member and, all through the years with his devoted wife, supported all lodge activities. It is fitting to mention his late brother, Fred Cmelka, who, during his life, devoted much of his time to perform for the Hlahol Dramatic Club in many, many Czech plays. Fred is survived by his spouse, Theo (Studeny) Cmelka. We extend our sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

Monday, March 3rd, a sates representatives' seminar was held and conducted by Brother Silas H. Smith at Lodge No. 88. The attendance was very good with most of the sales

representatives present. For two hours the class of questions and answers was interesting. Sister Evelyn Mikeska, District V sales representative, treated all present with a nice social after the meeting.

The Hlahol Dramatic Club held their annual meeting for election of officers for 1980 and plan performances for the year. The meeting was attended by 31 members; the attendance would have been more, but, at the same time, the sales representatives' meeting was held and some could not make both meetings. The meeting convened at 8 p.m. with President Marciel Malak presiding. A lively discussion took place about future performances. Director Tim Kostom and Ed Carlock, co-director, reported that an English play was selected and a comedy "Hot Water" with a cast of four men and five ladies will be staged Sunday, May 25th.

The idea to stage a Czech play is a serious problem, but with the enthusiasm we, hopefully, expect to stage one in the fall. More information on this in the near future in the Vestnik as time will progress.

DISTRICT VII SPRING MEETING Sunday, March 23, 1980

The 1980 spring meeting of District VII is scheduled to be held Sunday, March 23rd, at the SPJST and Sokol Corpus Christi Hall, 5502 Kostoryz Road in Corpus Christi with Lodge No. 79 as the host lodge.

There will be a sausage dinner with all the trimmings served starting at 11:30 a.m. Come early and have your dinner before the meeting begins at 1 p.m.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Just a reminder of events coming up at our lodge.

The youth club's fund-raising project is scheduled for Friday, March 14th, beginning at 5 p.m. with a chili supper and then some games and an auction are planned; also, a drawing for a donated quilt will be held. Be present to support the youth of our lodge.

We also are fortunate to have the Moravanka Brass Band of Brno, Czechoslovakia schedule an engagement at Seaton Star Hall, Friday, April 25th from 8 to 12. Tickets are now being sold by the president, Brother Jerry Pechal and-by some lodge members who are helping promote the sale of tickets. Tickets are $8.50 per person in advance and $11 the night of the dance at the door. President Bayer called Lodge No. 107's meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. March 2nd.

Roxanne Bayer led the pledge to the flag.

-All officers, except the vice president answered the roll call.

Brothers Alvin Hrna and Val Chilek were reported on the sick list. Brother Hrna is in Southeast Baptist in San Antonio, and Val is hospitalized at Downtown Baptist where he is scheduled for surgery. Our best wishes to both our members and the whole membership is praying for their recovery.

Minutes were approved as read and treasurer's report was given. Financial Secretary Purchis reported all was well and good on collections.

Stephen Peterson was accepted as a new member.

Wm. Pavliska gave the auditors' report.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer gave a report on activities of the youth club.

The bus should be ready for a trip to Corpus Christi to attend the District VII spring meeting. Fees for riding the bus were set up along with some rules and regulations for riding and leasing the bus. She announced that games were played for entertainment and that they were considering having a dance in the near future. There are still quite a few candles to sell and she urged the members to support the youth club because they will need much help in the upkeep of the bus.

President Bayer gave his report and stated that the Peanut Squares are sponsoring a project and need the support of all the members.

Joseph Bayer stated he thought he had some hall pictures that would be suitable for the SPJST history.

The activities' report is due and the youth leaders and officers need to get together to compile this report.

Some action will be taken to improve the parking area of the lodge hall.

Wednesday, April 9th, an insurance meeting will be held at the hall at 7 p.m.

All interested persons are invited to attend.

Our next meeting will be held April 13th. A post Easter party with egg hunt for the youngsters, will be held that day at 3 p.m.

Henry Sralla was the winner of the door prize.

Refreshments were served after the meeting.

We would like to continue this policy at the June convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his or her name to the local lodge officer, who in turn will review the case.

2. The letter must explain why he or she needs assistance.

3. The letter must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

4. The letter must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 10, 1980. All cases will be reviewed by the Committee before the convention: none will be accepted at the convention.

FEATURES SEVENTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF CZECH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS OF TEXAS The Czech Club at the University of Texas at Austin would like to extend an invitation to all readers of this newspaper to attend the club-sponsored Seventh Annual Conference of Czech Students and TeacherS. of Texas, which will be held Saturday, March 22, in the Quadranle Room of the Texas Union on the UT campus.

The conference consists of a program beginning at 3:00, guest speakers and performers will be featured; a social

19 hour at 5:00; a dinner break from 6:00-7:30; and a polka dance featuring the Granger Polka Boys from 7:30-11:30 p. m.

Registration for the conference is three dollars if mailed in advance.

The District II skating party held February 17th was a great success with .202 youth members and adults on skates and about 50 spectators. Thanks ,for attending this social. DISTRICT III YOUTH COUNSELOR

It is again time to start planning for the coming year's activities. The District III youth activities are as follows, so please mark your calendar accordingly.

March 29-District III Youth Leaders' training class to be held at Lodge 25 in Ennis starting at 10 a.m. All leaders, assistants, and LITs and all others interested in youth work are invited to attend. Youth leaders and assistants who drive, record your mileage and you also will be reimbursed for your meal.

April 13-District III Spring meeting at Lodge No. 35, Elk. This being the year of the convention on this date we will select District III 'Miss SPJST' as our representative to the State competition to be held in San Antonio `during the convention. If anyone needs copies of the rules and autobiographies, please advise me and I will forward them to you.

April 19th and 20th - State Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde.

This is what we call a mini LRL and is very educational.

June 9th-12th - SPJST XXIII Quadrennial Convention and State `Miss SPJST' contest in San Antonio.

June 29th - District III YAD at Lodge No. 180, Burleson.

August 2nd-5th - Camp at Val Verde. *Camp is starting later this year. This being caused by Camp Fire organization using the camp longer this year.

August 24th - State YAD at Temple.

September 27th - State Royalty at Round Rock.

Let's all attend our training class at Lodge 25, Ennis, and make it a successful meeting; for you new leaders, it is at this meeting that most of the plans for the year are finalized. See you all in Ennis.

March 3rd the District IV Youth Leaders held their youth leaders' training class in the home of Mrs. Mary Haisler, District IV youth counselor. A good meeting was held.

There were two changes of dates so mark them on your calendar.

March 30 -- `Miss SPJST' contest to be held at Senior Citizens Recreation Bldg., 500 E. Belknap in Seymour, beginning at 3 p.m.

Please make an effort to come and support our youth. The date had to be changed because the girls will be involved in school activities during the District IV meeting, April 27th.

District IV Youth Achievement Day was changed to July 27th due to July 6th being a holiday weekend; the YAD will be held at the Senior Citizens Recreation Bldg. in Seymour.

District IV meeting will be held April 27th at the VFW Hall in Seymour. Plans are now in process, so watch the Vestnik.

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN

Dear Brothers and Sisters: February has been a real good month for us. Our meeting and activities have been very exciting for both members and visitors.

February 2nd, we had a game night.

Everyone brought a white elephant and everyone won something. We met at the Jacksonwood's Swim Club Bldg. with about 36 people attending.

February 16, we had our youth club Valentine party and our regular monthly meeting. We met at the Jacksonwood's Presbysterian Scout Hut with about 45

people attending. Contests were played and lots of refreshments were enjoyed.

February 22, was the deadline for this year's Campbell labels collection. We ended up over the 600 label mark. The collection went to the Dos Mundos School for audio aid equipment.

February 23, we went to see the Holiday On Ice Show at 11 a.m. There were 24 members and guests attending. It was beautiful and enjoyed by all.

February 28, was the deadline for reservations to see the stage play "The Sound of Music". We went to see the play March 8th.

Next month will be exciting also and we are looking forward to it.

LODGE NO. 178, LONGVIEW

Dear Members and Friends: I would like to introduce myself as the new asst. youth leader at Lodge No. 178, Longview - Kilgore. Our Youth Leader Floyd Snider and I have a great year planned for our young people; together, we hope to enrich the lives of the youth by teaching, playing and working with them.

We are going to send out postcards and call each of our members in an effort to have 100% attendance at our meetings and special functions. Just a few of our special functions and meetings are going to include: March 16th - Easter Egg Hunt/with prizes April 20th - Special Surprise for Mother's Day May 6th - Mother's Day Pageant and Tea May 18th - Arts and Crafts (Gifts for Dad) In January and February we sold pens to earn enough money to purchase a Croquet Set. As soon as weather permits, we are going to clear and level the ground to make our court the best in East Texas.

We are hoping to have the support and encouragement of the adults in our lodge. They and the youth will benefit from these efforts.

Social games will also be played. This will be the first money-making project for our youth this year. Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Members and Friends, Saturday, February 23rd, our youth club went to the Corpus Christi Memorial Coliseum to see the Holiday On Ice Show. There were eighteen members and six guests who enjoyed a beautiful and exciting show.

We stopped for dinner on our return trip home at the Whataburger.

Friday, February 22nd, was the deadline for the turning in of this year's collection of Campbell labels. Our youth club donated over 600 labels to the Dos Mundos School.

Dear Members and Friends, Saturday, February 16th, Lodge No. 117 held its regular monthly meeting. It was called to order by Vice President Frances McDonald, followed by everyone reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Vkchodne od Cerveneho Kostelce se strani nad ZbeCnikem lze videt majestatni horu Bor, za ni Hergovinu; pohledem k severu vidime Jirovu horu a dal, nadni, tajemnk Turov, Blanik Jiraskova kraje. 0 teto hofe se zminuje Alois Jirasek ve svkch Skalacich, v kronice U nas, a v povidce Pan Johanes.

Z Turova, kde byla postavena v roce 1924 Jiraskova chata, je nadhernk pohled do celeho kraje jak si pamatuji z meho vkletu v roce 1947 do Hronova a okoli.
