FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK ATTENTION ALL SALES REPRESENTATIVES!

ARTICLE 45.

The official organ of the Society is called the "Vestnik". It is published each week and is mailed to all premium-paying members and to all full-benefit members, except JT, on request. The Supreme Lodge bears the expense in connection with the publication. Where more than one member resides in one family, only one, issue is mailed there. Names and, addresses of members who wish to receive the "Vestnik" must be furnished to the Supreme Lodge. Schools, colleges and universities offering and instructing the Czech language for credit will receive the Vestnik free on request.

In a recent discussion with SL Vice-President Bernard M. Gebala, your editor, was informed that this is a situation he would like for all of our Sales Representatives to be advised about: Any SR (sales representative) who reaches or exceeds a $200 (two-hundred dollar) annual premium will receive a gift certificate as an incentive award at the annual district SR banquet, unless that SR would rather have cash instead. In that case the SR must notify the SL Insurance Department of that fact prior to (before) the date of February 20, 1980. Please do so if that is your desire.

PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN DURING CIVIL WAR: "My advice...is to keep cool. If the great American people only keep their temper on both sides of the line, the troubles will come to an end, and the question which now distracts the country will be settled, just as surely as all other difficulties of a like character which have originated in this government have been adjusted. ARTICLE 46.

The contents of the "Vestnik- are managed by an SPJST member, elected by the convention as editor. HE must' possess journalistic qualifications, must know the Czech and English languages fluently and should have ample organizational, journalistic and general education. A seven-member publication committee, elected by the convention, decides about the objectionable content of the organ.

and prepared for the convention by the Publication Committee in a special report published two (2) months before the convention. (b) "Vestnik" shall contain material grouped into sections, including original editorial articles, various reports, and a youth section. (c) Letters should be of a purely fraternal spirit, without political, religious, or anti-religious inclination. (d) Every issue shall publish the address of the members of the Supreme Lodge,-of the Publication Committee, and of the president and secretary of the Committee on By-Laws. (e) In the month of May, the "Vestnik" shall publish the names and addresses of the district and local lodge secretaries. (f) The "Vestnik" shall have lessons in the Czech language. (g) Any suggestions for the improvement of the contents of the "Vestnik" should be referred to the chairman of the Publication Committee and the committee will then direct the editor to make the changes accordingly. (h) The Publication Committee will decide, as stated in Article 49, about objectionable contributions in the following manner: If the editor considers any matter questionable or harmful to the Society, he shall mail a copy of the doubtful material to each member of the Publication Committee, who shall respond by return mail. If the material is considered acceptable by four members of the committee, the editor will publish the article in its entirety, without comment or remarks. No letter may be published in its censored form without the written consent of the writer.

(Effective immediately). Objectionable material will be returned to the writer by the editor. If the editor fails to submit material turned down by him, the writer may submit the letter to the chairman of the Publication Committee and the decision of the Publication Committee will control over the opinion of the 'editor. (i) A portion of the printed material should be in the English language and a portion in the Czech language. In the event it becimnes necessary, a larger portion thereof may be in the English or Czech language. There shall be only one front page.

ARTICLE 48. (a) The publishers are under the supervision of the Supreme Lodge, which sees that the obligations and conditions of the publishers are carried out in compliance with the terms of the convention. One of the stipulations must, be that one issue of the "Vestnik" be

Wednesday, February 13, 1980 published two months before the convention which will be exicusively for the reports of the officers, directors, publication committee, and other standing committees, so that every delegate may have all pre-convention reports together. (b) If the contract is awarded to a publisher in another city, the moving expenses of the editor will be borne by the Society.

ARTICLE 49. (a) The Publication Committee has the obligation to see that the editor does not print articles inimical to the best interests of the Society and that he otherwise fulfills his obligations. The editor may be relieved of his duties according to Art. 37e for any one of the following offenses: 1. Incompetence, which means he does not manage the "Vestnik" satisfactorily in a dignified, literary, and typographical arrangement; 2. For willfully refusing cooperation with the Publication Committee; 3. For using the "Vestnik" for personal promotion; 4. Or to promote ideas harmful to the Society. (b) The editor may be dismissed after first being recommended for dismissal by a majority vote of the Publication Committee. The authority of dismissal rests with the Supreme Lodge whose decision is by two-thirds majority.

SPJST Finance Committee meets again Saturday, February 16 and possibly Sunday, February 17, if necessary and also another meeting Saturday, March 29nd, if needed, Sunday, March 30.

Mark your calendars! You may have some recommendations for them!

Last minute note: We received the recommended changes to our By-Law Committee sent in by By-Law Secretary Thelma Hrncir. They are in this issue.

NEWSBRIEFS The By-Law Committee met at the Home Office on Saturday, February 2nd.

All members were present, except Bro. Jerry Milan, chairman. District III was represented by his substitute, Bro. John Murphy. The committee will meet again on Saturday, March 1st, at 9 a.m.

The Seventh Annual Conference of Czech Teachers and Students is scheduled this year for Saturday, March 22nd. The conference will be held on the University of Texas Campus in Austin, Texas Union Building, Quadrangle Room on the third floor. Speakers and entertainment are tentatively scheduled, but details have not been worked out yet. Tom Hanson is the president of the Czech Club at UT, the sponsor, and he and his co-workers will soon be publishing details on the conference. As in the past, this conference solicits the support and attendance of all those throughout the state who are interested in the promotion and preservation of the Czech language. 窶年AM

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE SPJST History Project Dear Members: Since my last report to you on the History of the SPJST, a number of lodges have submitted their lodge histories and for this I am grateful. In a few weeks I shall have another update of the lodge histories. In the meantime, I have just about completed a review of all the conventions and will then be starting on other chapters of the book.

My attention has been called to the fact that some of the lodges wish to include the awards and honors won by members of the youth club in the lodge. I had not made specific mention of this information in my original outline, but it was my plan to include that under Item 16 of that outline which says: "General: Include any other information pertaining to the historical growth or development of your lodge..." I believe this is the logical place for information of that type to be inserted and a few of the lodges have proceeded to do so. If you have already submitted your lodge history and wish to add this information on your lodge's youth club and its accomplishments, please send it to me.

Also, as part of the SPJST chronicles, it is my intention to include the names of

those members of the SPJST who made the supreme sacrifice in WW I, WW II, the Korean Conflict, and in Vietnam. I have the listing of those from both world wars and the listing of those from the Vietnam War through Bro. Arnold Kulhanek who, as far as I can determine, was the last of the ten to give his life in that conflict on June 10, 1970. He was from Lodge No. 1 Fayetteville. The other nine, in chronological order were: Robert Urbanovsky (No. 1 Fayetteville), Chas.

R. Mondry (Lodge 68 Nelsonville), Billy Witzkoski (Lodge 142 Houston), Allen Mican (Lodge 40 Hillje), Frank Beran, III (Lodge 173 Galveston), Klaus Strauss (Lodge 154 Ft. Worth), Raymond Kozik (Lodge 88 Houston), Josef K. Bush (Lodge 47 Seaton), and Norman D. Schulte (Lodge 88 Houston).

For one reason or another, the names of any who gave their life in Korea are unknown to me, but I can't help but believe that there were some. We would need the members' help in furnishing us with the following information: The first name, middle initial, and last name of the individual, his date of birth, and the date of his death, and the lodge that he was from. With this information we would then by covering all four major encounters or conflicts that the U.S. has been involved in from the time of WW I. Thank you for your help.

BY-LAWS COMMITTEE REPORT The By-Laws Committee met on February 2, 1980, at the SL Hdqt. Bldg. to consider additional recommended By-Law changes as submitted by various members.

Bro. John Murphy substituting for Brd. Jerry Milan of District III. The following recommendations were considered. Sister Christine Zich, secretary of Lodge 92, requested a. change in Art. 37-h to read: The Supreme Lodge refunds 10% of the premiums remitted to it 'during the

preceding year to local lodges at the end of each year. The change would be 10% instead of 8%.

(See recommendations following letter) The next meeting of the committee will be March 1 at 9 a.m. Members wishing to recommend changes should send them to me as soon as possible.

The figure of over twenty million dollars of insurance being written is no small accomplishment and each of you can stand tall. The key figure which we are extremely proud of is that $18,662,500.00 of this business has been issued.

BY-LAW COMMITTEE OF THE SPJST I recommend the following changes to the by-laws at the 23rd Convention.

1. Art. 2-h: regards contract of the Vestnik printing and taking of bids.

This should be done by the Supreme Lodge body (5 officers and 7 directors.)

The Supreme Lodge body could reach year better control the cost, rather than have a 4-year contract.

2. Regards Art. 12-i: Election of 7-member Publication Committee.

I would recommend a 3-member committee appointed by the Convention Chairman and Vice-Chairman.

This was so for many years before and worked well. This would save money and a 3-member committee could meet much easier. I understand that all 7 districts would not be represented but I am sure a 3-member committee would also work for the membership and Society.

5 If the previously-submitted amendment to portions of Art. 4(e) is adopted, some feel that some lodges would adopt rules of eligibility and qualifications so stringent that they would make it even more difficult to qualify as a delegate for example, requiring that members attend all lodge meetings for the three years preceding the convention, plus a number of other restrictions, including length of membership. There will also probably be lodges that will impose no or few restrictions on eligibility of delegates if the above is adopted, other than holding a life insurance certificate.

As a compromise between the two positions, and in an effort to, at least, liberalize the requirements for delegate and substitute eligibility, and provided the previous article is passed,. I am submitting the following article to the By-law Committee for their consideration. It would be an amendment to present Article 4(e)3: Attended at least four meetings during each of the three years preceding the year of the convention, including the meeting in which election of delegates is held. Transferred members may have their attendance record of the previous lodge transferred and it shall be accepted. Also, members of a lodge created as the result of a merger have the same privileges as transferred members, insofar as previous attendance is concerned.

(The other portions of Art. 4(e) - 2, 4, 5 and 6 - would remain as is).

What about a lodge that meets quarterly, thus having only four meetings a year? I believe that the prevailing sentiment would be that a lodge that meets only four times a year already has a rare privilege and requires the minimum of its members as far as attendance goes, and that the members in such a lodge who desire to be delegates be required to attend all 4 meetings, including the meeting in which election of delegates is held, for the three years preceding the year of the convention. I am proposing the following by-la%$ for those lodges holding meetings quarterly: Members in lodges holding meetings four times a year must attend all four meetings in order to be eligible as a delegate to the convention for the three years preceding the year of the convention, including the meeting in which the election of delegate(s) is held.

In line with this, what should be done with a lodge that meets less than four times a year? When and if a lodge feels it cannot hold at least four meetings a year, that lodge should probably consider either some means of reactivation or merging its certificates

6 with _ another lodge. To cover this contingency, I would propose the following by-law: Lodges holding less than four meetings a year under Art. 95(a)&(c) forfeit their representation in the convention.

(Note: The records show that four lodges hold one meeting a year. Six lodges do not report any meetings. One lodge reports three meetings a year.

Accordingly, eleven lodges would be affected by this by-law).

If my previous article is adopted in the coming convention, the following article would take care of the situation, as far as the local lodge offices are concerned, and a recommendation is being submitted for your consideration: Local lodges may not enact any rule or regulation requiring a specified attendance at lodge meetings to qualify for an office or position in the local lodge, except as set forth in Art. 4(e)3 pertaining to delegates and substitutes to conventions, nor enact any rule or regulation requiring length of membership as a qualification for a lodge office or position or eligibility to vote in lodge meetings, except as set forth in Arts. 93 and 72(b)&(c) of these by-laws.

We must ask ourselves if we have not in the past, and even in the present, been too restrictive in electing members to positions and offices in the local lodges. We have heard the age-old complaint that goes, "Where are the younger members? Why don't they come to the meetings and take part in the lodge's activities?" The fact is that they may have come once or twice and upon learning that they could not be appointed or elected to a committee or office until they have been members for six months (in some cases a year) they rapidly lost interest and patience. They may have been willing and eager to serve in some capacity at the first meeting or so that they came to, but found the door closed. The current generation is less patient than the previous ones. They want to get involved now. By having too many restrictions, you are perpetuating the exclusion of a number of members who might otherwise like to get involved in lodge work to which they are, in fact, entitled. One of the best ways to get a person involved in the lodge is to give him some responsibility. In some lodges, restrictions make this difficult, if not impossible. Having to wait and go through an "apprenticeship" of sorts, as it were, dampens the enthusiasm of a new member, if it doesn't squelch it entirely. New members might then take the position, "If I'm not good enough for the lodge now, why should I be

several months from now?" Patience and personal pride are factors that are sometimes overlooked. Thus, we hear the lament, "The same old few are doing all or most of the work". Should we wonder why? Once a member holds a valid life insurance certificate issued by this Society, he should have all the privileges and rights of any other member, within the limits set forth by the Society's by-laws. Remember that under this new provision the ultimate and final decision would be up to the lodge members, but that local units could not adopt anything more restrictive or stringent than outlined in the above proposed articles. (Refer also to my remarks in Vestnik of 6 February 1980).

I am also proposing to re-word Article 59 and combine it with a portion of Article 60 as follows: When the newly-issued certificate is received in the local lodge, it is the duty of any member to report to the lodge if he knows anything unfavorable about that person's character and why he should not be accepted for membership in the lodge. Then, upon motion made, the members vote on the prospective member.

The local lodge in practice has little to do with the applicant being issued a life insurance certificate (that process starts with the sales representative and is then concluded in the Home Office), but it does determine whether the person is to become a member of the local lodge.

(See Article 58). Also, experience has shown that very few of the lodges have or use an investigating committee to pass on prospective members. Dropping the requirement of a 3-member investigating committee and leaving the matter up to the good judgment of the lodge members would probably be a better procedure. It is not good to have a by-law that is, in fact, either not working or ignored by the general membership.

As they are presently written, Articles 59 and 108(c) conflict because the one (Art. 59) mandates a 3-member investigating committee and the other makes the committee optional by use of the words "deemed necessary". Since Article 59 is being re-worded and combined with Article 60, the words Investigating Committee should be deleted in Article 108(c) and that article should end with the words "...as deemed necessary".

Articles 58 and 61 could be combined because they are closely related, as follows: The local lodge has the right to determine whether it will accept an applicant for membership. if the

8 applicant receives five (5) negative votes, his application is rejected. The lodge secretary notifies the applicant whether he is accepted or rejected and, if accepted, when he should appear for initiation and the date and time of the next meeting. If he is rejected, he has the privilege of seeking membership in another lodge of his choosing within the Society.

Proposed new article, possibly Article 21, and then re-codify: ' In the event a member elected to any standing committee to serve between conventions ceases to be a member of the Society, for whatever reason, the position will be filled by the substitute.

This is definitely within the realm of possibility and the question has arisen in the recent period. This would take care of a member elected to any of the standing committees in the district caucuses at conventions to serve between conventions. We presently do not have a provision that would cover such a contingency and while it might seem inconceivable that a person could serve and draw compensation on one of these committees after having been suspended and expelled from membership, I feel this is a contingency that should be covered.

My previous recommendation to delete Article 100 still stands, however, I would propose retaining and amending the last sentence of Article 100 because the necessity for this provision ,has become very evident in recent days and weeks. It could read: A member on suspension, for whatever reason, is not eligible for election or, appointment to a position of responsibility in the ,lodge or in the district, either in district meetings or in the district caucuses in conventions.

I think the reasons for this are quite obvious.

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD

Dear Readers: Cottonwood Lodge No. 6 held its regular monthly meeting Sunday, February 3rd at 2:30 p.m. President Robert Dobecka convened the meeting by having Lillian Perez and Shirley Dobecka recite the pledge to the American flag. Lillian then recited the SPJST pledge.

President Dobecka asked everyone to rise and a moment of silence in respect to two departed members was held.

They were Sister Annie Chabisek and Brother Frazel Milliman.

Brother Eddie Hykel reported twenty-six members and two guests, Michelle Pokladnik and Elton Stuckly, present.

Sister Barbara Hykel was called on to have the roll call of officers. They were all present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence was frbm SL Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and a thank you card from the F.J. Milliman family.

Treasurer Sister Georgia Wachsmann and financial secretary, Brother George Straten gave their reports. They were all in order.

Hall manager, Brother Alvin Schuetz gave his financial report.

Youth leader, Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth club report. The youth members will visit the West rest home Wednesday, February 13th at 7 p.m. The club held a Rubbermaid party Friday, January 18th. The club is selling stainless steel knives. They are collecting Dr. Pepper bottle caps, and Campbell labels, alumunim cans and paper. Judges for the Valentine contest were Sister Martha Monthei and Brother Willie Helona.

Sister Lydia Dobecka gave her Card Committee report.

New members accepted into Lodge No. 6 are: Bobby Joe Jones and Shirley Sembera.

Under old business it was decided what size ad will be put into the SPJST Convention issue and what will be written in this ad.

We now have approximately 115 days to go. The Host Convention Committee reports that all pre-convention business is on schedule. The Committee will meet with SL President Nick Morris and other Supreme Lodge officers on Feb. 26 at the Menger Hotel for the final screening and approval of the Convention Program. The Brochure Committee would like to inform all lodges and businesses that the deadline for the submitting of ads has been set for MARCH 15th. We stilt have many lodges that have not responded. We hope that we do not hear from them soon; it would be unfortunate not to be accounted for in the beautiful Convention Brochure-an item that can be retained as a memory of the SPJST XXIII QUADRENNIAL CONVENTION. We also have many BUSINESS people who are SPJST members and are doing business in many Czech communities where the majority of people are SPJST members. We should think that they also would like to be recognized and support us in this worthwhile project, so remember the deadline is March 15th; we hope that we hear from you soon.

We hope to have more frequent reports to the membership on our convention beginning later this month.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last lodge meeting was held Sunday, February 3rd, 1980 at 2 p.m. with President Jerry Pechal in charge.

Flag Bearers Gene Skrabanek and David Pechal led the pledge to the flag.

We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of three deceased members: Brothers Edd J. Urubek and ANNUL. John G. Surovik, Sr., and Sister Marie PREM. Hruska, all longtime members. Sister Hruska was to receive her 50-year $119.30 SPJST membership pin this year; so President Pechal presented the pin to her daughter, and it was pinned on her clothing in the casket. May these departed rest in eternal peace and, to ANNUL. the surviving members of their families, PREM. our deepest sympathy is being $ 90.30 expressed.

President Pechal welcomed everyone 49.74 to the meeting and recognized visitors: 15.38 Marylou Skrabanek and Brother Henry and Sister Angeline Vitek of Lodge No. 479.81 20, Granger. We enjoyed having you visit and make plans to come again.

Sister Ginger Klusacek, secretary, 298.95 read the roll call of officers and sales representatives plus the minutes of the 229.12 previous meeting, which were approved 100.30 with minor corrections. Correspondence included: Mortuary dues from Supreme 33.63 - Lodge; a thank you from Brother Bill and Sister Ruth Junek for Christmas fruit packages; the family of Brother Edd Urubek thanked the lodge for the flowers and the Memorial Fund donation in Brother Edd's memory; the family of Brother John Surovik, Sr. for the floral wreath for the services; Brother Frank and Sister Irma ANNUL. Klinkovsky thanked the lodge for the PREM. wreath of Calla Lillies for Sister $101.75 Hruska's services; a donation of $10 in 46.94 Sister Hruska's memory by Brother and Sister R.A. Treasurer Sister Dolores Skrabanek gave a detailed monthly report; so did Brother Willie Kohutek. President Pechal reminded me to thank Brother Alfred and Sister Martha Klusacek and Brother Charlie and Sister Leah Marek for helping with the table covers for the Al Grebnick dance.

The chairpersons gave their monthly reports, which were all good. Bar chairperson, Sister Louise Pausewang resigned because she had no means of transportation to and from the lodge hall. We accepted the resignation and Brother Woodrow and Sister- Gladys Marek volunteered to take care of the bar for February and will decide later if they will stay on lOnger.

Under new business, we set a meeting for the officers, trustees, delegates and all interested members, who wish to come, to discuss the by-laws and their proposed changes for the upcoming SPJST Convention. This meeting will be held Monday night, February 25 at 7:30 p.m. If you have some proposed changes, that should be an encouragement to be present at this special meeting, Monday night, February 25th at 7:30 p.m.

Brother Henry Vitek, District II director, was called on to speak to the membership. He commented that he and his wife always enjoy their visit to our lodge because we hold an interesting meeting, all according to the by-laws of the SPJST and that he knows that we are keeping "on the move" all the time. He presented the growth of the order during 1979 and also stated that he will again be a candidate for District II director and asked for the delegates' support. Thanks for your comments and make plans to visit us again.

March 30th, three members: Sisters Olga Fuchs and Lydia V. Kotrla and Brother Robert W. Haisler will be awarded their 50-year SPJST member-

ship pins; also, Brother Frank Novosad will be honored on outliving his certificate by achieving 96 years of age.

We will have a covered dish supper following the meeting. Supreme Lodge officers will be present to present Brother Novosad his check for the face value of his certificate. On the same day, the youth club members will also have an Easter egg hunt after their meeting, so we will have a full day of activities planned for the meeting that is set forward one week because of Easter falling on our regular Sunday. More details later.

Youth leader, Sister Shirley Patterson, gave her report. There were seventeen members and two visitors present. She commented on the "sock hop" held in January. Their social is the District II skating party Sunday, February 17th, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. For their fund-raising project, they will hold a chili supper Friday, March 14th, beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets will be sold on a beautiful quilt donated by the Adolph Shenkirs. Prizes to the best girl and boy salespeople will be awarded.

The time is running out for the lodge queen contestants to enter the "Miss SPJST" competition on the district level to be held Sunday, March 16th at Lodge No. 187 in Round Rock. All girls, 16 to 19 years of age, are eligible to enter, so call the youth leader if you are interested.

Recipients of premium refund checks were given their checks by Sister Ginger Klusacek.

Door prize winners were Monroe Lucko and Lillian Kosarek.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Lodge No. 117, Robstown Dear Members and Friends: In a 1979 issue of the Vestnik, an article was printed about early Czech immigrants who settled here in Texas. A number of Shiller names were among those listed. My mother's maiden name was Evelyn Shiller, so I asked her if any of them were relatives. She said her father, Frank J. Shiller, was a member of the De Costa Lodge No. 32 and had been their secretary.

Brother Adolf E. Motal, financial secretary of Lodge No. 32, did some research and came up with the following information: Frank J. Shiller was first mentioned in September, 1908 but he may have been a member of Lodge No. 32 before this date because the records did not state that he was a new member.

In the years 1926 through 1948, he was listed as their secretary.

Frank J. Shiller was a lifetime resident of Texas and a retired farmer from near Victoria. He was born 7 February 1881 in Nelsonville, Texas, the son of the late W.S. and Frances Shiller, both from Czechoslovakia. He passed away in a local Victoria hospital 10 December 1957.

Another interesting fact in Brother Adolf Motal's research, was that, at one time out of a total of 58 members in Lodge No. 32, fifteen members were Shillers.

FRATERMiLlf Mao is a family affair

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, MUSEUM Dear Readers: It has been some time since I made a report on our LAM department, which is growing continuously, yet, we need some items badly to round out the history of our pioneers in our displays. We need a small windmill and I am sure there are many that are not used today anymore for one reason or another, we do not need the tower just the head and wheel and we will mount it here on a small tripod to display it. If you have such a windmill let us know and we will arrange to have it picked up.

The second item that we need is a GO DEVIL cultivator; this is an implement on slides with a set of discs on each side that was used for the first cultivation, it doesn't make any difference if the wood is rotted out we can rebuild it here, we also need a 5 shovel cultivator that used to be pulled by one horse; these pioneer tools would help us round out our pioneer tool display.

There are thousands of children who have never seen these items in use and that includes many grown ups. Those items on display with your name on as a donor would bring you a lot of goodwill and advertising from the thousands who tour our museum.

We have had visitors from 42 states of the union and 12 foreign countries and every 'visitor is really enthusiastic (especially those from the foreign countries). Our first visitors this year were Mr. and Mrs. Hal McFadden from Seattle, Washington.

If you have not seen the museum we invite you to come see it for yourself, you will find that it isn't just a bunch of junk items put together haphazardly but a clean, well-displayed educational institution that you will find very interesting to sec and you will be glad that you had a part in helping to bring it about. Our museum is the place for you to place your items you think so much of for safe keeping and educating our children.

Here your items will be displayed for the public to see and admired in clean cases and safety of their keeping, for we have the most modern burglar alarm system available if you think you can hide in the building and then break out later. It is impossible once that burglar alarm is switched on, the minute someone moves inside the building, it starts screaming.

Be a part of the SPJST Museum! *At the present time we have 1610 items on display with the oldest dating back to the years 627, 638, 658, 1300, 1530, A.D. and many, many over a 100 years old. I would like to thank - every donor who has donated to our museum for

NO. 74, LOVELADY

Dear Members and Friends: We had the Music Masters to provide our music for us Saturday night.

Everyone really enjoyed listening and dancing to the music. There was a real good crowd attending and they also enjoyed visiting with one another during intermission.

We want to remind everyone of our Valentine dance for Wednesday, February 13th from 8 to 12 p.m.

Members are all welcome to come and bring guests with them. Give your Valentine a special treat and take her dancing. The music will be furnished by the Country Pride.

We held our regular monthly meetings Monday, February 11th at 7:30 p.m.; by attending your lodge meetings, you will find out what the lodge is working on and what they have accomplished.

We really enjoyed the snow last week and I hope everyone had a chance to get out and build a snowman or at least see how beautiful it looked on the ground and trees. It is really amazing how beautiful God can make everything look with just a blanket of white.

After six weeks of house confinement, I ventured out to the lodge Sunday, February 3 for our 16th annual celebration of our present home. The weather turned out very nice with sunny skies fairly warm. Everyone enjoyed being out after the wet and cold spell that held us in its clutches for over a week. In some parts of Houston we even had snow for the pleasure of the youngsters. The committees deserve a big hand for the delicious dinner served at noon to a satisfied crowd.

The pastry table held a variety of mouth-watering goodies to satisfy anyone's taste. The ticket sale also was sponsored by our sisters with a huge success; the prizes all were donated and for this, we wish to thank all our generous donors. It's great to watch this group at work, it's like a bee hive. I must not forget the brothers who, so freely, extended a helping hand to the sisters. The celebration was a success, and, to top it, the FREE dance was the highlight with happy guests to dance to the favorite music of JOE PATEK. Two brothers could not pass it up and celebrated their birthdays at Table No. 8: Brothers Amos Kadlecek, born February 2nd, and Allen Peeples, born February 4th. A huge, decorated cake, baked by Della Kadlecek, was lit and the birthday song rang out from all around the table; the requested number `Tiny Bubbles' was enjoyed by both couples.

While I was out of circulation many things happened. The following members, in one way or another, met with bad luck. I am sorry not to have

more information about each one. Sis. Vera Colarik was out dancing and having a good time cutting the rug doing the 'Cotton-Eyed Joe' when she slipped and broke her hip. She is home now and will be good as new before long. Sister Helen Valcik, a devoted Birthday Club sister, some way got tangled up in her bed covers and fell out of bed to discover she broke one of her fingers; it still bothers her a little. Sister Hattie Chernosky, for the holidays, got a broken wrist by tripping over a rug, but she was very brave and drove the car herself to the hospital emergency room. Brother Harlan Maresh, son of the late Dr. H.R. Maresh, was involved in a serious car accident. I am sorry for not having more information, Harlan; we all wish you a speedy recovery.

Sister Birdie Hilsher, also a Birthday Club sister, is confined in St. Joseph Hospital going on two weeks; don't know how long she will have to stay.

Brother Joe Elzner dislocated his shoulder and has it in a sling; Joe, I know it hurts but anyway I saw you playing dominoes Sunday. Crossman spent several weeks in the hospital but is at home now. Everyone was very

16 concerned about you and we are glad you are doing well. Sister Anna Svestka has her bad moments and ails quite a bit and had to be rushed to the hospital for relief. Anna is my cousin and after the death of her husband, Anton, she lives with her daughter, Hilda Krpec, who also has health troubles and, lately, was in and out of the hospital to seek relief.

There may be others whom I do not know about, but, to all our sisters and brothers we wish health and a speedy recovery.

Brother Steven Charles Sikora, age 22, without a warning, was taken from his loving parents, Charles and Marilyn Sikora by a car accident that took his life while standing near an intersection in College Station, Tx. Monday, January 21, 1980. Steven Charles, a second year engineering student at the A&M University from Crosby, Tx., died three hours later in St. Joseph Hospital at Bryan, Tx. Rosary was recited Wednesday, January 23rd at 7 p.m. in the Earthman Gorth Road Chapel.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crosby, Tx. with Rev. John Fidler officiating. Steven Charles was laid to rest in the White Cemetery.

Surviving Steven Charles are his parents, Charles and Marilyn Sikora; three sisters, Diane, Carolyn and Lisa; one brother, Thomas; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. FEATURES MISS VESELKA TO COMPETE IN MISS TEXAS TEEN USA PAGEANT

Miss Janine Veselka, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Veselka of Taylor, has been selected to compete in the 1980 Miss Texas Teen USA Pageant to be held at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel, Dallas, Texas, April 5, 1980. This Pageant is the Official State-wide Finals for the Miss Teen USA Pageant to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in November of 1980.

Contestants from all over the state will be competing for the title. All contestants are between the ages of 14 and 18 and must have at least a "9" average in school. They are requested to participate in the Volunteer Service Program of the Miss Teen USA Pageant.

Through this program many young ladies are becoming involved in community activities by contributing at least 12 hours of time to some worthwhile charity or civic work.

Among the prizes the winner of the Miss Texas Teen USA Pageant will receive is an all-expense paid trip to compete in the National Finals at the Convention Center, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and a $500 Cash Scholarship to the school of her choice. Over $15,000 in cash scholarships will be awarded at the National Pageant in November.

Contestants will be judged on Civic Involvement, School Activities, Appearance, Poise, Personality, and Patriotic Speech or Talent. No swimsuit competition is required. Contestants have the choice of presenting a patriotic speech or performing a talent on stage.

Miss Veselka is sponsored by Wilcox-Elliott, Inc., Taylor, Texas. Her hobbies include baseball and softball, gymnastics, being outdoors, camping, cooking, water skiing, ice and roller skating, sewing and all types of music.

From The State Youth Director LONGHORN RECREATION LABORATORY

By Kit Barkan The following article by Kit Barkan was taken from the TRAPS (Texas Recreation and Park Society, Inc.) publication outlining the training program planned for Longhorn Recreation Laboratory. The training program is planned to aid anyone associated with recreational activities of any age.

For the past several years the Supreme Lodge has authorized the District Youth Counselors, Youth Leaders and or Assistants to attend this workshop. The DYCs, youth leaders or their assistants who attend will be paid for registration, mileage and meals. The results of the training and motivation have been very good. I encourage anyone working with our Youth Program to try to attend. It is a good healthy training program geared to be fun and educational in many phases of leadership.

The comments above give you a taste of what reactions participants have after a week at Longhorn Recreation Laboratory, a training workshop for professional and volunteer recreators in leadership and program development.

Geared toward the "front line troops" who lead activities, participants have opportunities to learn new techniques and practical skills which they can implement with their various organizations.

Participants come from a wide assortment of agencies, including municipal parks and recreation departments, Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, state schools and hospitals, 4-H, churches, SPJST, colleges and private camps. Major emphasis is placed on learning through doing, in activities led by resource people who are experts in their field.

Learning through sharing with other participants is also heavily accented. In fact, the recreation laboratory concept began in the 1930's in Michigan when some volunteer recreators gathered at a conference to learn new techniques.

When their speaker was unable to attend, the group decided to share ideas with each other to take back to their communities. Over the years, laboratories have sprung up in many areas of the United States, and as the Labs have grown, 1 more and more professional recreators are taking part.

The 1980 Lab schedule will include opportunities for learning skills in Communication, Recreation Leadership, New Games Activities, Square and Round Dancing, Creative Dramatics, Song Leadership, Homemade Games, Party Planning, Clown Arts, Quiet Games, Crafts, Basketry, Outdoor Cookery, Puppetry, Ceremonials, Storytelling Skills, Kite-Making, and Outdoor Interpretation and photography.

Another important aspect of the lab is the notebook which participants take with them when they leave. All activities covered throughout the week, such as programs, classes, crafts, games and ceremonials are included. It is a valuable resource once you have returned home, and can also be purchased for $6 if you would like the information but are unable to attend.

The 1980 Lab will be held from March 9-14 at the Texas 4-H Center 12 miles north of Brownwood. Situated above Lake Brownwood, the center opened in 1975 and provides an ideal atmosphere for this type of workshop - quiet, isolated and with the conveniences of home.

Labbers live in dormitories and have all center facilities - including _a softball diamond, tennis courts, play slab, nature trails, archery range and some 70 acres of grounds - at their disposal.

Cost for the Lab is $90, which includes room, board, insurance and one copy of the notebook. Limited scholarship monies are available for volunteers.

1980 Rules For MISS SPJST CONTEST

MARITAL STATUS: Single thru the time of the '80 Convention Coronation.

MEMBERSHIP: A member of SPJST at least 6 mo. prior to lodge candidate selection.

ATTIRE: Long formal in Speech Contest & Coronation (District and State) SELECTION: Lodge: No lodge eliminations; lodges can send as many candidates to district as they wish, who have never held the title of "Miss SPJST".

District: Competition will be at each district's spring meeting (unless the district desires a separate date) but not later than May 1st, 1980. The District Youth Counselor will arrange selection of at least 3 judges. The district competition will be in two separate contests: TALENT: Time limit: 3 minutes Judged on: Stage Presence - 20 pts.

Technique - 30 pts.

Rendition - 30 pts.

Originality - 20 pts.

SPEECH: (Selected from topics' listed below) Time limit: 3 minutes Judged, on: Appearance & Poise - 25 pts.

Personality - 25 pts.

Speech Content - 30 pts.

Delivery - 20 pts.

The candidate with the highest total points from both contests shall represent the district at the convention. In case of a tie for first place, the two contestants who tied will present their speeches for judging again.

State: The seven finalists shall compete in three contests to determine "Miss SPJST". The competition will be at the convention in June 1980. The three contests are: INTERVIEW: (with judges) Judged on: Response - 35 pts.

Poise - 20 pts.

Personality - 30 pts.

Appearance - 15 pts.

TALENT: Same selection, time! limit, and judging qualities as at district.

SPEECH: Same topic, time limit, and judging qualities as at district.

The judges for the three convention contests will be selected by the host lodge(s), with the consultation with the Youth Department of the Supreme Lodge.

AGE: Any SPJST female member at PRIZES AND REIMBURSEMENT: All finalists will each receive a wrist least 15 and no older than 20 as of Jan. 1, watch and an allowance of $150 fo.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY: An autobiography of each candidate will be submitted direct to the Youth Department of the Supreme Lodge at least 15 days prior to the district competition, along with a recent photo.

These forms may be secured from the local lodge youth leader, and in those lodges where there is no youth leader, they will be sent on request from the State Youth Director.

TABULATION: Tabulation of the convention contests will be conducted by 3 persons selected by the State Youth Director. Following each contest, the judges' results will be placed in a special envelope by the State Youth Director and sealed until opened by the Tabulating Committee and announced by the President of the Supreme Lodge. In the case of a tie, only the speech portion would be repeated and re-judged, judgidg to be on Speech Content and Delivery only.

From The District Youth Counselors DISTRICT IV YO U 111 COUNSELOR The first event for District IV is a Youth Leaders' Training Class for all District IV youth leaders and their assistants, plus anyone else who may be interested in the youth program. We need all of you who can come and help us plan the youth program for our youth

members. The meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. March 3rd at my home and we hope to be through by 4:30 p.m.

Our second event will be District IV meeting at the VFW Hall in Seymour, April 27th. Youth members, we will have the same contests as last few years, because they have worked real well. Then, we also will have a "Miss SPJST" candidate for the convention.

The rules have been printed several times in the Vestnik; so read them carefully and let's have a good turnout of girls to try out for the contest, it's fun. I will have to have your autobiography 10 days (prior) before the District IV meeting, so be sure and send it in to be eligible for the contest.

Our Youth Achievement Day was changed to July 6th because the SPJST Convention will be near our regular date of our YAD, this changed date will only apply for 1980.

We will camp again with District I. Thanks to District I for letting our small groups camp with you all because what can 8 or 9 youngsters do at a camp to have a good time.

This past week we were ice-bound for several days. The trees were coated with ice, but it didn't break any limbs because it wasn't so heavy. Today was a beautiful day with the sun shining all day; the temperature rose up to 50 degrees, it seemed warm after the cold weather we've had.

Don't forget March 3rd at 9:30 a.m. Youth Leaders' Training Class at my home.

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: We held our regular monthly meeting Tuesday, February 5th and had a good attendance.

We have not decided on a definite date to have our youth dance yet. We decorated the lodge for Valentine's Day and it really looks nice. We want to thank Nancy West and Sherry McKinney for helping us decorate.

We had a great group at our last social games. It sure is nice to see a large group of people having fellowship and enjoying themselves. There is always free popcorn and coffee for all

who attend and the children can skate and play games. Please come and join in the fun. Our social games are every Thursday starting at 7:30 p.m.

We want to remind everyone of the Valentine dance the mother lodge is giving Wednesday, February 13th from 8 to 12 p.m. The music will be furnished by the Country Pride. Please come and enjoy the music with us.

I guess all the youth members had a lot of fun in the snow. It really made everything look nice. I always love to see youngsters playing in the snow.

He was born May 11, 1933 in Cisco, Texas, the son of Charles and Mattie (Cook) Hill. He was reared in Cisco, graduated from Cisco High School and Cisco Junior College.

September 20, 1952 he married Miss Patsy Pippen of Cisco. After their marriage they lived in Abilene and Odessa before moving to Ennis in 1966.

Br. Hill was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church and SPJST Lodge No. 25. He was in the trucking business.

Surviving him are his wife; two sons, Perry and Jody Hill, both of Ennis; one daughter, Miss Jennifer Hill of Ennis; mother, Mrs. Charles Hill of Moran; one sister, Mrs. Frances Green of Moran; and two brothers, Harold Hill of Austin and Robert Hill of Portland, Texas.

Services were held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 2:30 p.m.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 35, Elk, and in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolence to the family of our longtime member, our departed sister MARY T. BARTOSH, who died in a Waco nursing home, at the age of 74.

She was born 23 November 1905 near Axtell, Texas. the eldest daughter of the late Frank and Mary Mach and had lived in the Axtell-Elk Community most of her life. She attended the rural schools in this area. She married John Bartosh (deceased) in November, 1927.

Sister Bartosh became a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 35 January 16, 1931, and she was always an interested and devoted member. She was also a member 'of the St. Martin's Catholic Church at Tours.

Rosary was recited at the Kotch Funeral Home Chapel at 8 p.m. Monday.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elk. with Rev. Frank

Miller officiating. Interment followed in the SPJST Pavelka Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, William T. Bartosh of West and Adolph Bartosh of Atalissa, Iowa; three brothers, John P. Mach of Axtell, Joe Mach of Penelope and Frank Mach, Jr. of Abbott; six sisters, Mrs. George (Annie) Riley of Axtell, Mrs. Frances Dulak of Axtell, Mrs. Millie Dulak of Corpus Christi, Mrs. George (Lillie) Steele of Dallas, Mrs. Fred (Elizabeth) Kubitza of Rt. 3, Mart and Mrs. John (Bertha) Rauschuber of West; II grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

ITEMS OF INTEREST 4-H PROVIDES LEARNING EXPERIENCES The 4-H program provides. youth between the ages of 9 and 19 in Texas and throughout the nation an opportunity to make the most out of life and to become responsible citizens and leaders.

4-H provides "Expanding horizons".

The Extension Service, a part of the Texas A and M University System, is the parent organization of 4-H. "4-H provides a wide range of 'real-life' experiences for youth in a learning-bydoing' environment". "This helps them become productive, self-directed and contributing members of society."

More than 137,000 boys and girls are enrolled in 4-H in Texas, with the national enrollment totaling some 5.2 million. There are some 2,000 organized 4-H clubs in the state and almost 1,100 special interest groups.

"A vital cog in a successful 4-H program are volunteer leaders," notes Dr. Pelham of A and M. "Texas boasts some 16,200 adult leaders and more than 6,300 junior and teen leaders who give direction to specific project areas and assist 4-1-1 members with special events and activities."

As far as 4-H projects are concerned, Texas youth are engaged in a wide range of programs that are providing meaningful learning experiences. By far the most popular project area is foods and nutrition, which is attracting more than 36,400 youth. Electric projects rank second at more than 14,370. The horse and pony project is attracting the third highest enrollment with more than 11,500, while clothing and textiles is running a close third with an enrollment of more than 11,200. Following in the top 10 listing of project enrollments are safety, creative crafts, beef, home gardens, sheep and swine.

To help in this effort, a forestry specialist for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A and M University System, offers some pointers in shopping for and choosing the right type of wood.

"Price comparisons may be difficult since firewood is sold in various quaritifie§—the standard cord, the face cord-Or the truck load," points out Dr. Mike Walterscheidt: A standard cord is 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet high, or 128 cubic feet.

On the other hand, a face cord measures 8 by 4 feet on the face of the stack, with the wood cut into smaller pieces / The face cord measures about 1/3 to 1/2 of a standard cord and is often called a "Short cord."

"The best way to compare prices is to calculate the cubic feet of wood. Measure the stack 'and multiply the length by the width and by the height," suggests the forestry specialist.
