When we compare our winter this year with the same dates we experienced last year, we have to admit that we certainly have enjoyed an abnormally temporate climate and travel is certainly more pleasant from the weather point of view this year, however, when we speak of travel, we immediately think of stopping at the service station gasoline pump, the price of gasoline and other needs for the automobile (especially the increased price of them) and, almost immediately, the desire to do some traveling is deminished simultaneously! The Hertz Rent-A-Car company now estimates that it costs their company about 38 cents (average) a mile to keep their cars on the road to rent! Gasoline here in Central Texas has reached the $1.06 a gallon' price for regular and unleaded is, of course, more.

As a youth your editor remembers, in the "Model T' days, gasoline was a certain price· and, then, the oil companies stated that gasoline would be more combustible and deliver more power iť lead was added to the gasoline, however. they would have to charge more per gallon for the same gasoline. OK, everybody swallowed that; now they claim that it costs them more to produce un-leaded gasoline! You figure it out dear readers. yours truly has quit trying to do so. We have oil in Alaska. yet, our understanding is that it is finding its way to Japan. You can rest assured that, with the officers. editor. directors, etc. receiving 15 cents per mile on gasoline allowance in their travels for our SPJST Society and fraternal activities. their travels will be certainly curtailed.

Brother John Stasa, 89, is in Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, having undergone surgery January 18th for a broken bone in his hip. He was injured in an accident at his home a day or two ago.

Brother Stasa is a consistent English and Czech contributor to the Vestnik about the SPJST Lodge No. 79, Sokol Corpus Christi, SVPS Society and the Czech Language and Cultural Society happenings. His address is 1346 Daytona Drive, Corpus Christi, Tx. 78415.

FROM THE SEC-TREASURER'S OFFICE CONVENTION NOTICE Dear Members: Pursuant to Article 37 (r), of our By-Laws this is official notice that the Supreme Lodge has set June 9-12, as the dates for the XXIII Convention of the Slavonic Benevolent Order Of The State Of Texas (SPJST). The convention will be held in the San Antonio Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. Please watch the coming issues of the Vestnik

Dear Members: Our February meeting will be held in our hall on the 3rd at 2 p.m, CST. Besides the usual reports, there will be several items of business which will cover some important motions. The Audit Committee also plans to give its report.

The January meeting covered the re-election of the Board of Trustees and two committees were appointed. One piece of business, which was thoroughly discussed before a vote was taken, was the motion to suspend the operations of our Youth Club until some later date.

This passed with no negative votes. The prime reason for the suspension ·• is no young people ·• except for two, with one able to take part in the adult meeting now and the other in a few months.

In reading the minutes of the December meeting, our secretary, Br. Lupík, when mentioning who won the door prize, jested, that since Sister Kortis won the last two months that she will win today-­ SHE DID! The "Kaffee Klatsch", after the meeting, went well with the lodge furnishing some of the sandwiches and refreshments. Sisters Sperlik, Kortis, Havrda, Janik, Luquette and Nezval adding many things to make things more pleasant. Thanks ladies for not letting us down.

After the February meeting there will be the usual coffee and conversation.

Come and join in; you might like it.

4 LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Members and Friends, SPJST Lodge 13 held our regular monthly meeting Sunday, January 21st.

It was called to order by our president, Brother Claude Flippin, at 2:05 p.m.

Then our flag bearer, Sister Patti Tydlacka, led us in the pledge. We then had our roll call of officers. There were 12 present and 1 absent.

The minutes were read from our last meeting by our secretary, Sister Olga Nimtz. The minutes were approved as read.

We, then, had our financial report given by our financial secretary, Sister Magdalene Iselt. The report was approved as read.

We next had our swearing in of new officers. Brother Clint Luksa, from our neighboring Lodge No. 7, came to swear in the officers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for doing this for us. The officers sworn in are as follows: President - Brother Claude Flippin; Vice-President-Brother Albin Horak; Secretary-Sister Olga Nimtz; Financial Secretary-Sister Magdalene IseIt; Treasurer-Sister Mildred Horak; Flag Bearer-Sister Patti Tydlacka and Reporter-Sister Donita Leyva.

Trustees are: Father Isidore, Werner Jatzlau, E.N. Spacek, Arnold John Tydlacka, Mary Kubena, Nellene Spacek, Lee Flippin and Francis Greenwood.

Brother Clint Luksa then congratulated everyone and wished them the best of luck as new officers.

We discussed old and new business. We discussed the smoke problem in the hall and decided something would have to be done in the near future.

We had the drawing for door prizes.

First place went to Marlene Iselt, second to Pamela Spitzenberger, and third to Claude Flippin.

Not having any other business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned for "Happy Hour".

LODGE NO. 29, TAYLOR Dear Members: President Edwin Adamek called our meeting to order Sunday, January 13th at 4 p.m. with Donnie Farrell and Pam Steger presenting the flag and , they led the members in the pledge of allegiance.

All of us remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members, Brother John Tomascak and Sister Annie Urbanek.

Roll call of officers showed all present, except Property Committee member, Ed Jansen.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer's report, the Property Committee report and the audit report were given. They all were very good reports.

We had a visitor, Brother Lad Zatopek, at our meeting. We were happy to have you and do come back again.

A thank you letter was read from the Countyt Extension agent for letting them use the lodge hall for their 4-H Food Show and also a thank you note from Sister Frances Schwenker, administrator from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor, thanking the senior members for baking cookies for the rest home during Christmas.

President Adamek read the names of the members who are to receive their 50-year SPJST membership pins in 1980.

They are Stacy Boedeker, Vera L. Cuba and Chas. Lutonsky.

A letter was read from Leonard Mikeska stating that Brother Frank Dlouhy reaching the age of 96 will present him with a check. Brother Dlouhy is in the rest home and this check will be presented to him at the rest home.

We had one member, Jalyn Carroll George and one transfer to Lodge No. 187, Dorothy Tierney.

The senior members' monthly social is still being enjoyed by a large group of members coming out to the lodge hall playing dominoes or just visiting. By the way, their meeting date has been changed to the second Tuesday of the month.

President Adamek nominated an Auditing Committee for the coming year.

They are Sisters Edith Shiller, Dorothy Hirt and Frances Tallas.

A motion was made to donate to the March of Dimes and the Heart Fund and also $100 to Cerebral Palsy Telethon.

Youth Club Leader Melvin Steger reported forty-six members were present at the meeting, one new member and 7 adults. They made $500 on their ticket sales. The club is planning to go to see the Harlem Globe Trotters in Austin February 5th. He also read a letter from Mrs. Massey telling him about the rules and forms for the "Miss SPJST" contest, which will be held at the convention in June.

Door prizes were won by Harry Caesar, Eddie Shiller and Michael Kaiser.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, February 10th at 4 p.m.

VESTNtK LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: We had the Crockett Westerneers at the lodge Saturday night to provide our music. There was a good attendance and everyone really enjoyed listening and dancing to the music.

We want to thank Ben Erwin for moving the fans that blow over the dance floor. It helped more than where they were before.

We want to remind everyone of our Valentine dance we are having Wednesday, February 13th at 8 p.m.

The band known as the Country Pride will be furnishing the music. We want to invite everyone to come out and bring a guest.

We hope everyone is staying dry even though it has been raining for several days. Remember to please be careful driving with all the roads wet from the rain.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Members: The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 84 was called to order by President Sadecky.

Flag Bearer Cheri Petr led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Minutes of the last meeting and correspondence were read by Secretary Evelyn Salac.

The entertainment report was given

by Second Vice President Paul Pokladnik. Then Youth Leader Petr reported on her group and also read the financial statement for 1979.

Brother Ben Jarma reported on the softball team and its financial statement, also three trophies won by this group were presented. In behalf of this lodge, President Sadecky accepted them and we will have pictures at a later date, that's a promise by photographer Randolph Scott.

Sister Carlyn Ondrusek reported the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council will meet February 12th at the Catholic Club on Military Parkway at 7:30 p.m. with WFLA No. 401 as hosts. Other dates (please mark these on that calendar, you members refer to) are: March 20 -- Ennis Sokol Hall, hosts SPJST No. 135 and SPJST No. 25 and WFLA No. 402.

April 4 -- Lodge No. 84, Dallas and Lodge No, 130, Dallas, hosts.

Wednesday, January 30, 1980 May 13 -- Catholic Club, hosts KJT and KJZT. June 18 -- Lodge No. 25, Ennis, dinner.

September 24 -- Lodges KJT and KJZT, hosts.

October 23 -- Guardian Savings and Loan Bldg., WOW hosts.

November 12 -- SPJST Lodge No. 84 council will be host.

December 4 -- Lodge No. 25, Ennis Christmas party.

The Council invites you to attend any and all meetings.

Hall rental, Brother Emil Petr gave his report and then Brother Adolph Salac, House Committee chairman, asked that members respond to his call of help in keeping our lodge repaired and sound condition.

Sister Lillie Jarma for the Sunshine Committee reported get well cards were sent to Brother David Kohutek, Brother Eddie Cooper, Brother Emil and Sister Lydia Nekuza and Sister Albina Slovacek.

New applicants to our lodge are: Vickie Prasifka and Mathew Pavelka.

DATES TO REMEMBER: February 2 -- Dance to the Vrazel's music from 8:30 to 12:30.

February 16 -- Czech Harvesters are playing for your pleasure.

February 17 (Sunday) -- Lodge meeting, 3 p.m. and initiation and free dinner for members joining our lodge in 1979. Please attend and welcome them and stay for a delicious dinner of spaghetti and meat sauce, salad, garlic bread, dessert and drink for $1 per adult and 50 cents for each child. The ladies are asked by the Kitchen Committee to bring a dessert, please.

March 1 -- Jodie Mikula and his members play their hearts out for your dancing pleasure from 8:30 to 12:30.

March 9 -- Our lodge anniversary dinner. Details later.

March 15 -- The Country Boys play for dancing enjoyment.

March 29 -- The Czech Harvesters play at the lodge.

In new business Vice President Joe Ondrusek reported on several price changes. He also reported the Entertainment Committee meeting was well-attended and thanked the membership for the donation of items given away January 5th, where standing room only was available.

Sister Linda Coker heads the Special Committee for this year and you will be hearing more about plans for the coming months.

Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra will practice February 4, March 7 and 21.

Conductor Sid Pokladnik wants all members to please come.

It is really raining in Dallas this morning. I guess it's what is called spring rain. Randy should rake up the heaps of leaves so that I can locate where we left the hoe and shovel. We need to get the earth ready for the garden plants.

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 66 held their meeting Sunday, January 20th with President West presiding.

The flags were presented by Larry Brem and James Yates. The pledge of allegiance and lodge motto were recited by the members.

Visitors were SL President Nick Morris and his wife, Dorothy.

SL President Morris installed the lodge officers and committees for 1980.

Following the installation the meeting began with roll call of officers, they were present.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the November meeting (there was no meeting held in December). They were approved as read.

In correspondence, greetings and letters were received from Supreme Lodge officers, Editor Sefcik, and others such as letter from the Country Talent of ,Bands, from the Convention Credentials Committee to Sister Engelke and also about the 8 percent refund from the Supreme Lodge. President West read several letters from various businesses, March of Dimes and others. A 'thank you' was also read from Sister Marie Erlanson, thanking the lodge for the donation toward her bills; Sister Erlanson is taking treatments at Scott and White Hospital. We hope and pray that she is improving.

There was a letter received from the Supreme Lodge that Lodge No. 66 has a 50-year SPJST member who is Sister Julia Guenat. Congratulations, Sister Guenat! Brother Otto Hanus will present the pin to Sister Guenat.

Sister Engelke read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held Wednesday night, January 9th.

Reports were made by Brother Frank Parma, ticket office chairman, and Brother Frank Miller, Linden Hall secretary, a yearly detailed report.

Sister Parma reported on the youth club activities. She thanked those who

5 brought canned items and made donations for the Christmas baskets, thus helping to fill the 150 bags of goodies for Santa, youth who went caroling, visiting the Bellmead Rest Home, the donations made to Meals on Wheels, Toys for Tots, Salvation Army, Christmas Seals and others. The club is collecting aluminum cans and empty cigarette packages, which are donated to some person who is on the Kidney Dialysis machine to help pay expenses on this machine. All brands of cigarette packages are accepted. If you have any empties, please save them for the youth club. They will be appreciated.

Brother George Shilling, Entertainment Committee chairman, reported the committee had met and selected their chairman for the year. Following the meeting, hot dogs, chips and beverages were served.

Sister Engelke gave her report and also gave names of persons accepted as members in January. They are: Carrie Joyce Price, Donna Jean Gerlich, Chance Eric Story, Christie Renee Spence and Amy Elizabeth Vahue.

One transfer in is Alfred Lee Husak from Lodge No. 54. Welcome to Lodge 66.

Health Committee Report Sister Agnes Mazanec reported that she had sent get-well cards to Sister Polly Gaidusek who had eye surgery. It was nice to have Sister Polly at the meeting Sunday. Sister Rose Parma was in the intensive care for several days at Providence Hospital. Sister Rose is now at home and doing fine. Brother Jerry Parma is also in cardiac care at the hospital. We hope he is improving.

Brother Chris Spence is at the VA Hospital in Temple for some tests. We hope Brother Spence is doing fine and will be home soon. Also, a card was sent to Brother Geere Moore. We hope he is doing OK. Brother. Bill Cox has had surgery at VA Hospital in Temple.

Brother Bill is at home and doing fine.

We wish him a speedy recovery. Brother Silas Smith is now back at work and doing fine. He looks great. Good luck, Brother Silas! Theresa Vernetti has been ill with the flu bug. We hope she is doing OK. To others who have had fife flu, we hope all of you are now doing OK. Congratulations to Brother Leslie and Sister Glenna Dungan who celebrated their 50th anniversary Saturday, January 19th. May you have many more anniversaries.

Sister Mazanec reported the Cheer Committee had prepared 30 bags of goodies for the elderly and shut-in

6 members. They also visited the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor and presented them a $50 donation and also some cookies and kolaches.

Some of the thank you notes were read from those who received the bags. There was a special letter from the Stransky family of a donation of $100 to Lodge No. 66 in honor of their father and mother. We wish to thank them for the nice gift. The Cheer Committee will select something very nice for the hall.

Brother Ed Mazanec read some of the new revisions made of the lodge Rules and Regulations. There were discussions on these changes as they were read. A motion was made that copies be made of the changes and passed out at the next meeting, so each member can read them and understand the changes. This motion was passed and it carried.

Brother Jim Lock will print them.

Door prize winner was Brother Frank Miller.

Members with birthdays in January were Sisters Libbie Parma, Hilma Macha and Brothers Frank Kofnovec, Jim Vrana and Greg Nors. The cake was brought by Donna Stanislay . Happy birthday to each of you.

We enjoyed Brother Nick and Sister Dorothy Morris visiting our lodge.

Thank you, Brother Morris for installing the officers and committee members. We especially enjoyed the very informative talk on the upcoming convention.

Brother Morris gave some very good points on bang a delegate, what to do and not do, to listen, study, get the facts of what is said at the convention, to go with an open mind, yet get the views of your lodge members; alsio, Brother Morris said there will be discussions on some rules some not strict enough and others on them being too strict. A delegate will learn to listen and know if changes are good for the Society: do they meet qualifications, will they build toward a higher goal. There will be many pros and cons on many subjects. A delegate will have to understand them and decide on the best way he can be helpful. We hope Brother and Sister Morris will visit us again.

As we enter the year 1980, what will it be like? There are a lot of problems, but, knowing the quality of our Society, we can cope with them if we try to understand and look ahead. Looking back to 1979, we had a very good year and with it, high hopes, the let-downs, sorrows, and happiness, but as you look back, we at Lodge No. 66, can see the many changes, improvements that have been made, new members coming in, the hard-work, long hours, but we got them done and the good times we had at our socials, dances, game nights, the

VtSTNiK Christmas party and dance with our families and friends, the happy looks of delight when Santa Claus came by to visit the children; then it was worth all the time you gave to make it possible, also, the fellowship with friends, the program and singing by the youth of our lodge.

We wish to give a special thanks to the Lodge No. 47 Seaton Choral Club, they looked so nice in their beautiful costumes and we enjoyed the lovely songs they sang. We really enjoyed having you. And to the Beseda Dancers from West, we thank all of you and also Sister Maggie and Brother Ernest Grmela for coming.

The costumes were beautiful and you have a wonderful group. Thanks to all of you!

I think we at Lodge No. 66 have a lot to look forward to, by working together, taking part, getting active, taking on responsibility, sharing ideas, lending a helping hand, listening and learning, using less criticism and more praise; a kind word here and there will go further then a sour note dropped here and there, so in 1980 let's go forward together with a pat on the back, a kind word here and there, more smiles, less frowns or bitter words, which once spoken, can never be taken back again. Together, we can go forward alone, we fall backward, so think about it.

Remember, the next lodge meeting will be held Sunday, February 17th at 2:30 p. m.

A motion was made and seconded for Frank Machalek to have the road work completed on lodge property.

LODGE NO. 173, GALVESTON Dear Members and Friends: Just a few lines to let our members know what went on at our last meeting. We regret to say that one of our dear members, Sister Mollie Macik, passed away January 7, 1980. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the Macik family.

We also wish to inform our members that new Rules and Regulations have been written up for the good of the lodge: from this time on flowers and meals will only be provided to members who pass away who, either in the past or present, attended meetings or donated their time for the good of the lodge. Wednesday, January 30, 1980 LODGE NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO Dear Members and Friends: The San Antonio Lodge No 133 held their monthly meeting January 20, at 1505 South Gevers St. The meeting was convened by President Emil Matula who led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance; also a moment of silence was held for the deceased members of our lodge. All officers were present.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Dominic Netek, they were accepted with one correction which was made. The treasurer's report given by Treasurer Sister Viola Mazac was read and accepted as read. Two new Applications were received, and were approved by the membership. Our new members are Bro. Pres. Matula who is the chairman of the Host Convention Committee, gave a detailed talk on alt that has been done in regards to the convention and also appointed various committees.

SAN ANTONIO CZECH CHORAL CLUB recently paid a visit to the nursing homes in Moulton and Schulenburg, to sing for the residents of both nursing homes. The residents enjoyed the Czech songs very much and didn't want the group to leave and although you see some tears in some of these beautiful people's faces, it is a satisfaction that you get which is beyond description. You may get on a boat and see the city from the river within an 8 block radius. The food is reasonable, more so than in many other cities. LODGE NO. 183, MID-CITIES

Dear Readers: Sunday, January 13 was a beautiful day and also the first monthly meeting of

Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities for 1980. We had a very nice attendance.

After the meeting was called to order by President B.J. Hlavaty, the members were led in the recitation of the pledge of allegiance by Flag Bearer Donna Roznovsky.

The yearly financial report was read by Financial Secretary Daniel Roznovsky.

Daniel also acknowledged the ,8 percent premium refund check the lodge received from the Supreme Lodge. He read the accompanying letter from Vice President Bernard Gebala explaining the computation of this refund.

Treasurer Inez Greenlees gave a report of the various money transactions and deposits that took place in December.

I recorded the minutes from the previous meeting and these were read by Secretary Maurine Hamilton. All reports were approved as read.

There was old business discussed briefly. No decision was reached and this matter is still under consideration.

President Hlavaty, on behalf of the membership, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Robert Sills for their help and support in securing the Arlington Downs Townhouse Clubhouse for Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities, rent free,

Special guests included Brother Sid Pokladnik, District III director and Brother Ed Kamas, District HI youth counselor. Our special guests were introduced and welcomed by President Hlavaty.

Their speeches were very informative and encouraging. I feel the lodge can benefit greatly from adhering to the sound advice and ideals presented by our director and youth counselor.

Brother Sid installed the Officers for Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities for the new year. He also thanked the outgoing officers for their performance during the first year of our new lodge.

After the installation ceremony, the meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served.

I do want to express our sincere thanks to our special guests and also our appreciation to them for taking the time from their busy schedules to honor our invitation.

Our next scheduled monthly meeting will be held on the second Sunday, February 10 at 2 p.m. in Arlington at the Arlington Downs Townhouse Clubhouse.

PLEASE NOTE: A short meeting for the youth club will take place prior to the regularly held meeting of the lodge.

LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Members: Our new officers were installed at the January 9th, 1980 meeting by SL Vice President Bernie Gebala. All officers were present except Youth Leader Bettye Hawk. Congratulations to the 1980 officers and thanks to Bernie Gebala for installing our officers.

President Jerry Tomastik then called the meeting to order. The pledge was recited and Jerry asked if there were any members on the sick list. Jackie Beck reported that Becky Love had been in an auto accident and was in the King's Daughters Hospital. We are wishing Becky a speedy recovery.

Dorothy Lisenbe then read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved.

Correspondence consisted of a thank you card from the Jerry Tomastik family, thanking the lodge for the flowers for Mrs. Agnes Tomastik, the mother of Brother Jerry Tomastik, who was laid to

Wednesday, January 30, 1980 rest Dec. 27, 1979, and a letter from the Junior Livestock Show. It was voted to donate $100 to the livestock show. Louis Driska made the motion and Jackie Beck seconded it to make the donation. We will be a gold star member again and we are helping these young people.

President Jerry Tomastik then recognized our guest and asked if there were any new members present. We were honored to have SL Financial-Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr. with us; as always, Jerry has good words for our lodge and our lodge members. He stated we were eligible to have another delegate to the convention.

Jerry, we were glad to have you. Please come again soon.

President Tomastik then asked Bernie Gebala to speak. Bernie stated that he had appointed Frankie Hutka on the Publicity Committee for the 1980 Convention. Congratulations, Frankie!

SL Vice President Gebala also spoke good words about our lodge and he praised us for all the donations that have been given. Brother Gebala then gave the members a gift; only those members present, will know what the gift was.

Thanks Bernie, you are always welcome!

All committee chairmen gave good reports. Everyone thanked the members for all the help and co-operation going on. We can always use help, so, if you want to work at the lodge, come out and help us we would be glad to have you.

The Board of Trustees chairman, Otis Beck, gave the report. They decided on many new items. Otis reported that the new dance schedules are at the lodge. He also named the committee chairmen.

They are: Bar -- Wilbert Ramm, chairman and Cecil Lagrane was asked to be his assistant.

Ticket -- Pat Tomastik, chairman and Frances Love, assistant.

Games -- Dorothy Massey, chairman and Bill Hutka, assistant.

Entertainment -- Jerry Tomastik.

The hall cleaning was also discussed.

Pat Tomastik made a motion for Wilbert Ramm to clean the lodge, and Otis Beck seconded the motion.

William Kamm would like to thank each and everyone of you for the good help you have given last year. He also wishes to thank each of you for voting for him as a member on the Board of Trustees and bar chairman. He would like to see all of you good helpers continue helping out at the lodge so we can have a bigger and better Lodge 177 at Academy.

New members accepted to Lodge No. 177 are: Darrell Glenn Lisenbe, Brenda Jo Lisenbe, Richard A. Pustka, Gloria T. Pustka and Gregory D. Pustka.

Dear Members: Our lodge meeting was called to order at 8 p.m. January 17th by 2nd Vice President Charles Schandue, which was opened about 15 minutes late; meanwhile, President Roy Haag came in and took charge of the meeting.

There were eighteen adult members, eleven youth members, and one visitor, Theresa Klauser from Switzerland, present.

We discussed the rules and regulations and Polka Fest which is coming up in July.

We decided to send a letter to Mrs. Joe Slavik on the death of her husband, Brother Joe Slavik, Sr. The letter was signed by all the members who attended the meeting. Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved family. May Brother Joe rest in peace until we meet again.

I would like to remind our members that Brother Joe helped organize Lodge No. 185 in New Braunfels and signed up its first (charter) members.

I would also like to remind all our members to please attend your lodge meetings because you will have fun.

LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Members and Friends: January 17th President Glenn Kudrna, Vice President Charlie L. Dlabaj and several members of various committees attended the January meeting of Polka Festival, Inc. at the KJT Auditorium at 8 p.m. Plans are being made to try to make this year's Polka Festival (which will be May 3rd and 4th) better than ever. Our lodge has a lot of good music lined up for your dancing pleasure.

Our second calendared dance will be February 2nd; music by American Sunrise. This band has played for our lodge before so you all know it is a great band. Our Booking Committee has a lot of good bands booked for this year: Mikulas, Vrazels, Flashbacks, Czech Harvesters, and Country Noblemen to name a few.

Something new has been added to the kitchen this year: we now have a pizza oven. You may now buy a pizza hot out of the oven. Tony's Pizza, that is, also sandwiches and hamburgers.

Don't forget the next meeting Wednesday, February 13th, at 8 p.m.

Refreshments of cake and punch will be served in hOnor of St. Valentine's Day after the meeting.

After the pledge of allegiance, the officers for 1980 were installed and President David Storm conducted rest of the meeting.

Most of our business discussions were in regards to our recreational plans for the year. The officers and chairpersons of these plans will need our help and support in order to be successful, so let's all join together and make 1980 a great year for our lodge.

LODGE NO. 187, ROUND ROCK Our first meeting for 1980 was held Monday, January 14 at the lodge hall.

President Woytek called the meeting to order. After the pledge of allegiance, the group took a moment to express their sympathy in behalf of the loss of Brother Elgin Wahrmund.

Roll call of officers reflected all were present except Ronnie and Susan Woytek. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were read and approved. The chairmen of the various committees gave good reports and each indicated a need for volunt: .ers to help in kitchen, bar and ticket sales. FUTURES FRATERNALISTS ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON FAMILIES (Note: The following item was recently received from the National Fraternal Congress in Chicago. It is pretty well self-explanatory. Members are urged to simply read this and be aware of what the National Fraternal Congress, with its 100 affiliated Fraternal Benefit Societies, is doing to strengthen the family unit throughout America. SL President Nick A. Morris was a member of the original Family Life Committee which published the pamphlet that was distributed last year to our lodges entitled "Fraternalism Is A Family Affair" and, we understand, wrote the introduction on the second page of that pamphlet "Why This Booklet?". We feel that our SPJST families are solid units; nevertheless, we should be aware that the attack and assault on the family unit is a continuous and ongoing problem that we all share.

We continually see, by the statistics in the increasing number of divorces and, out-of-wed-lock, teenage pregnancies, that the family unit, as such, is being threatened. - Editor) In response to the appeal of President Jimmy Carter, the National Fraternal Congress of America Family Life Committee is directing preliminary action leading to a 1980 White House Conference on Families. Five Family Life Committee representatives have delivered testimony on behalf of the National Fraternal Congress at regional hearings held throughout the country between October, 1979 and January, 1980.

President Carter, in convening the White House Conference on Families declared, "the American family is under unprecedented pressure." He challenged Conference leaders and the American public "to see what we can do, not simply as a government, but as a nation, to strengthen American families."

The Family Life Committee, in turn, encourages officers and members of every fraternal society to participate in the name of fraternalism at state wide Governor's Conferences to be held early in 1980. Governors of every state have appointed Conference Coordinators and society members can obtain the name of their respective Coordinator by writing to: Coordinator, White House Conference on Families, in care of their state capitol.

President Carter initially appointed a 40 member National Advisory Committee to reach out to scholars, experts and those thousa n ds of Americans, who, through experience, know what makes a family strong.

Following preliminary directional meetings, seven national hearings were conducted between September and January, giving individuals and groups an opportunity to present their positions on the dilemma of family life in America.

Recognizing the gravity of the issue, and having as one of its objectives - "to develop and implement a program aimed at strengthening communications among members of families" - the NFCA Family Life Committee requested and was granted representation at five of the regional hearings.

Delivering testimony were the following Family Life Committee members: Mary Reddick, National President, Degree of Honor Protective Association, in Denver; Edgar Martel, President General, Union Saint-Jean Baptiste, in Hartford; Elmer E. Vargo, National Secretary, Hungarian Reformed Federation of America, in Washington, D.C.; and Joseph J. Miller, Supreme President, Catholic Knights of St. George in Detroit.

Each emphasized that the NFCA Family Life Committee, established in 1976, has coordinated a unified effort on behalf of all member societies to provide programs, materials and suggestions of ways in which the 48,000 local units can help to improve communications among family members. They declared the Family Life Committee's concensus that breakdown in family communications is the basis for many of the problems which individuals in family situations face.

To the regional hearings the fraternal leaders affirmed their societies' desire to share with the White House Conference areas where they believe public policy could better serve the interest of family life in this nation.

Specifically, the Family Life Committee members called for greater attention to allowing individuals to have maximum time and opportunity to function within family activity. Citing the example of a wage earner who must be at two different

12 occupations in order to maintain a livelihood, the fraternalists pointed out a definite lack of time for family togetherness.

NFCA Family Life representatives further called on government to gear public funds and programs to enrichment of family activity and prevention of family problems. By increasing awareness among individuals about the ways and means of family wholeness or wellness, individuals could consciously see the results of anti-social activity.

Every state of the union will conduct state wide Governor's Conferences on the Family, and as with the regional hearings, individuals and groups are invited to participate. From the Governor's Conferences, a majority of delegates to the National White House Conference, slated for June or July, 1980, will be elected or appointed.

Three regional locations, Baltimore, Minneapolis and Los Angeles have been selected for the National White House Conference on Families. A total of 2000 delegates will attend, 80 percent of which will be appointed or elected on the state level according to a formula based on each state's representation in the U.S. House and Senate. The remainder of delegates will be made up of 57 state and territory coordinators, 40 National Advisory Committee members, and 255 at-large- delegates.

NFCA Family Life Committee Chairman, William Code of Catholic Family Life Insurance Society, encourages every fraternal society's participation at Governor's Conferences throughout the country. Appealing to NFCA member societies, Code has declared the White House Conference to be a means through which fraternalism's ideals can be made known, and the hallowed institution of the family be strengthened anew.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BROTHER AND SISTER LESLIE DUNCAN OF WACO SPJST LODGE NO. 66 ON THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Leslie B. Dungan, 2719 Park Avenue, Waco, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary January 19, 1980 with a dinner held in the Glenn Whatley Dining Room, 29th and Speight Avenue in Waco. Friends and relatives attended from Austin, Elgin, McDade, Temple, West, Lorena, Abbott, Golinda, Elm Mott and Waco.

Leslie Dungan and the former Glena Browning were married January 22,

VESTNiK 1930, in McDade, Bastrop County, Texas.

Glena was born and reared in Elgin, Bastrop County, Texas. She is one of five daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs. Josh Browning. She has two sisters, both living near Austin, Mrs. Odell Creel and Mrs. Feigh Mills.

Before her marriage, Glena was employed as a substitute school teacher in the Bastrop County Schools.

Leslie was born and reared in McDade, Bastrop County, Texas. Leslie, the son of the latet Mr. and Mrs. William Dungan, came from a family of 12 children, 4 girls and 8 boys. Two sisters and six brothers are still living: his sisters, Mrs. Homer Hudler and Mrs. Hazel Creel, both live in McDade; his brothers, Bernice Dungan, Clyde Dungan, Toni Dungan and Emory Dungan, also live in McDade; V.R. Dungan lives in Austin, and Oscar Dungan in Bastrop.

During their early married life, Leslie and Glena had lived in the Elgin, Giddings and Cameron areas, where they were engaged in farming. They came to Waco in the early 1940's and Leslie was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. They built their present home at 2719 Park Avenue, in Waco, and have lived there since January 10, 1950.

However, during their last few years of duty with the Railroad, they lived temporarily in Austin, Jacksonville and in Fort Worth for eight years - where they were living when Leslie retired from Southern Pacific Railroad Company.

They had always maintained their home in Waco during assignments of duties in the other cities, and they always looked forward "to coming home" on Park Avenue.

Leslie was honored with a retirement party in 1967 after more than 36 years of service with Southern Pacific.

Since they came to Waco, Glena has owned and operated a grocery store in East Waco, near the Turner Street School. This was during 1948 and 1949.

Leslie and Glena are Charter Members of the SPJST Linden Lodge No. 66, and are members of the Waco Ceska RVOS Lodge 109. Leslie had served as president of the Waco' RVOS Lodge and both he and Glena had served on many committees and held various other offices over the period of the years past.

For many years they have been in charge of renting Linden Hall.

Leslie and Glena continue to remain active and loyal supporters of the lodges, always faithful, and devoting many hours work and contribute unselfishly for the best interests of the fraternals.

But, most importantly, and I know this

from my own personal experiences, they are concerned about others. Their numerous kind deeds and acts will always be remembered; also, they have personally helped many individuals and families, those less fortunate, -- and they expected no recognition or glory. This is the type of fraternalists, true and loyal friends we have found the Dungans to be. They are always willing to help in need, as well as always ready to participate in the pleasant and nice things of life, be it lodge activities, hunting, fishing, picnicing, polka dances, and other fun events.

Brother and Sister Dungan are to be congratulated on this special occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary -Glena and Leslie, we love you. May God Bless you always.

BROTHER AND SISTER CHUP CK'S DAUGHTER IS `Teacher of the Year'

Mary Frances Bennett Mrs. Mary Frances Bennett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Chupick of La Grange, was recently honored as "Teacher of the Year" of Weslaco School District which employs over 300 teachers. In 1975 Mrs. Bennett was honored as "Teacher of the Month."

The selection was sponsored by the ladies' auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10464 of Weslaco.

Wednesday, January 30, 1980 when she received a plaque from the representative of the school district and auxiliary.

The above and following information has been taken from The Valley Town Crier published in Weslaco.

Mrs. Bennett is remembered by Weslaco residents as the teacher whose sixth grade classes spearheaded the drive to place a monument to Marine Cpl. Harlon Block in the Weslaco park which bears his name. This was a project of students during the bicentennial year.

This she says was the most exciting year overall of her teaching career.

Throughout her 16 years of teaching, Mrs. Bennett has always hoped that each child would consider her as a good teacher, fair and a friend.

Mrs. Bennett's background is Czech, and she was born where most families were first and second generation from Czech or German origin. She was valedictorian of her 1950 graduating class of Fayetteville High School and was active in her chapter of the Future Homemakers of America.

During the four years at Texas University, Mrs. Bennett was a member of the Orange Jackets, was a Bluebonnet Belle nominee, was, president of the Home Economics Club and was a sweetheart nominee for Zeta Tau social sorority.

After earning her bachelor of science degree in 1954 she married Ballard Bennett, a member of a pioneer Weslaco family. The couple has two sons, John 20 and David 18 and have made their home in Weslaco since Bennett's discharge from the army. He is an attorney.

Mrs. Bennett taught three years before her sons were born and then retired from the classroom for 10 years. She then taught for three years in Weslaco High School and was chairman of the department in 1971 and 1972. Ever since, she has taught science or activity lab, primarily in the fifth and sixth grades. She has been with the Weslaco School District for 13 years and now teaches sixth grade science at Cuellar Elementary. In 1979-80 she was chairman of the science department.

Mrs. Bennett is a member of the Texas State Teacher's Assn., the Texas Classroom Teacher's Assn. and the Texas Assn. of Teachers of the Gifted and Talented.

She is a member of the Presbyterian Church in Weslaco, where she is a Sunday School teacher, sings in the choir and has sponsored several youth activities.

She has worked with the American Cancer Society, the Delta Literary Club,

13 the Weslaco Birthday Party organization, the Lioness Club, the Weslaco Humane Society, the Farm Bureau, the Friends of the Weslaco Library and the Ex-Students' Assn. of the University of Texas.

Texas State Representative Brother Bill Patman Senator Bill Patman of Ganado was honored by the Texas Farmers Union for outstanding legislative service during its 76th annual state convention earlier this month in Corpus Christi.

The statewide organization selected Senator Patman and other state lawmakers for their "consistent support and outspoken leadership on behalf of the family farmers and ranchers of Texas," according to Jay Naman, president of TFU. Senator Patman said he was very pleased to be honored by the group.

"The Texas Farmers Union is an organization that takes the lead in issues that, from time to time, might be considered controversial. Its members ought to be proud of their strong leadership and its efforts to promote

The Brazosport College in Lake Jackson finished Czech Course No. I and plans are to study Czech No. II, beginning February 21st from 7 to 10 p.m. for 30 minutes once a week. In the meantime, we will go over what the students learned, so we can start where we left off.

Czech Conversation Club meeting will be held February 21st at Brazosport College for the off-meeting and one hour of entertainment from 8 to 10 p.m. monthly.

As our first project, the club was host to the senior citizens before Christmas. We served them poppyseed kolaches and Christmas bread (vancaca). For our program we sang Czech songs and carols.

We are grateful to the SPJST Society for their financial support. It is up to us younger generations to carry on the heritage, which our forefathers left us within this State of Texas, where Czech traditions are still carried out.

IN SUPPORT OF CZECH STUDIES AT BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE In its continuing effort to support the instruction of the Czech language in educational institutions throughout the State of Texas, Brazosport College recently acknowledged the receipt of a $300 donation from the SPJST provided to that college for that purpose.

Brazosport College is located in Lake Jackson, Texas.

In a recent letter from College President Dr. W.A. Bass to SL President Morris, he stated, among other things, that: "The newly-organized Czech Cultural Club recently hosted the Adult Life and Learning Program activities. A special program of Czech history, music, and food was presented to more than 90 senior citizens. During this activitiy, members of the Czech Cultural Club and local members of the SPJST, representing your organization, presented your contribution to the college.

LONGHORN RECREATION LABORATORY

Lion Laboratory. The training program is planned to aid anyone associated with recreational activities of any age.

For the past several yearS the Supreme Lodge has authorized the District Youth Counselors, Youth Leaders and or Assistants to attend this workshop. The DYCs, youth leaders or their assistants who attend will be paid for registration, mileage and meals. The results of the training and motivation have been very good. I encourage anyone working with our Youth Program to try to attend. It is a godd healthy training program geared to be fun and educational in many phases of leadership.

Wednesday, January 30, 1980 The comments above, give you a taste of what reactions participants have after a week at Longhorn Recreation Laboratory, a training workshop for professional and volunteer recreators in leadership and program development.

Geared toward the "front line troops" who lead activities, participants have opportunities to learn new techniques and practical skills which they can implement with their various organizations.

Participants come from a wide assortment of agencies, including municipal parks and recreation departments, Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, state schools and hospitals, 4-H, churches, SPJST, colleges and private camps. Major emphasis is placed on learning through doing, in activities led by resource people who are experts in their field.

Learning through sharing with other participants is also heavily accented. In fact, the recreation laboratory concept began in the 1930's in Michigan when some volunteer recreators gathered at a conference to learn new techniques.

When their speaker was unable to attend, the group decided to share ideas with each other to take back to their communities. Over the years, laboratories have sprung up in many areas of the United States, and as the Labs have grown, more and more professional recreators are taking part.

The 1980 Lab schedule will include opportunities for learning skills in Communication, Recreation Leadership, New Games Activities, Square and Round Dancing, Creative Dramatics, Song Leadership, Homemade Games, Party Planning, Clown Arts, Quiet Games, Crafts, Basketry, Outdoor Cookery, Puppetry, Ceremonials, Storytelling Skills, Kite-Making, and Outdoor Interpretation and photography.

Another important aspect of the lab is the notebook which participants take with them when they leave. All activities covered throughout the week, such as programs, classes, crafts, games and ceremonials are included. It is a valuable resource once you have returned home, and can also be purchased for $6 if you would like the information but are unable to attend.

The 1980 Lab will be held from March 9-14 at the Texas 4-H Center 12 miles north of Brownwood. Situated above Lake Brownwood, the center opened in 1975 and provides an ideal atmosphere for this type of workshop - quiet, isolated and with the conveniences of home.

Labbers live in dormitories and have all center facilities - including a softball

diamond, tennis courts, play slab, nature trails, archery range and some 70 acres of grounds - at their disposal.

Cost for the Lab is $90, which includes room, board, insurance and one copy of the notebook. Limited scholarship monies are available for volunteers.

1980 Rules For MISS SPJST CONTEST AGE: Any SPJST female member at least 15 and no older than 20 as ofJan. 1, 1980.

MARITAL STATUS: Single thru the time of the '80 Convention Coronation.

MEMBERSHIP: A member of SPJST at least 6 mo. prior to lodge candidate selection.

ATTIRE: Long formal in Speech Contest & Coronation (District and State) SELECTION: Lodge: No lodge eliminations; lodges can send as many candidates to district as they wish, who have never held the title of "Miss SPJST".

District: Competition will be at each district's spring meeting (unless the district desires a separate date) but not later than May 1st, 1980. The District Youth Counselor will arrange selection of at least 3 judges. The district competition will be in two separate contests: TALENT: Time limit: 3 minutes Judged on: Stage Presence - 20 pts.

Technique - 30 pts.

Rendition - 30 pts.

Originality - 20 pts.

SPEECH: (Selected from topics listed below) Time limit: 3 minutes Judged.on: Appearance & Poise - 25 pts.

Personality - 25 pts.

Speech Content - 30 pts.

Delivery - 20 pts.

The candidate with the highest total points from both contests shall represent the district at the convention. In case of a tie for first place, the two contestants who tied will present their speeches for judging again.

State: The seven finalists shall compete in three contests to determine "Miss SPJST". The competition will be at the convention in June 1980. The three contests are: INTERVIEW: (with judges) Judged on: Response - 35 pts.

Poise - 20 pts.

Personality - 30 pts.

Appearance - 15 pts.

TALENT: Same selection, time limit, and judging qualities as at district.

SPEECH: Same topic, time limit, and judging qualities as at district.

The judges for the three convention contests will be selected by the host lodge(s), with the consultation with the Youth Department of the Supreme Lodge.

PRIZES AND REIMBURSEMENT: All finalists will each receive a wrist watch and an allowance of $150 for the period spent at the convention. In addition, each will be furnished a banquet ticket, plus tickets for not more than two chaperones. Mileage will be paid to the San Antonio Convention site and return home for one vehicle at the rate set by the convention.

The winner will receive a scholarship of $500, which will be paid to the college, university, trade or business school of the winner's choice whenever she chooses to use it, and the title "Miss SPJST" for the duration of the convention.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY: An autobiography of each candidate will be submitted direct to the Youth Department of the Supreme Lodge at least 15 days prior to the district competition, along with a recent photo.

These forms may be secured from the local lodge youth leader, and in those lodges where there is no youth leader, they will be sent on request from the State Youth Director.

TABULATION: Tabulation of the convention contests will be conducted by 3 persons selected by the State Youth Director. Following each contest, the judges' results will be placed in a special envelope by the State Youth Director and sealed until opened by the Tabulating Committee and announced by the President of the Supreme Lodge. In the case of a tie, only the speech portion would be repeated and re-judged, judging to be on Speech Content and Delivery only.

From The District Youth Counselors DISTRICT II YOUTH COUNSELOR Happy new year to everyone and may it be a healthy and prosperous year for you.

The District II activities for 1980 will get underway just real soon, so please put these dates on your calendar. The first will be our annual Valentine skating party which will be held at the Temple Skate Haven on North 31 Street, February 17, 1980 and will begin at 5 p.m. and end at about 7:15 p.m. We will have door prizes again and we certainly hope all of you are planning on coming again; as usual, we always have a big turnout. You may bring your friend but do ask them to join your youth club. See you then.

Then March 16, 1980 will be our spring District II meeting and this year we will taw. our "Miss SPJST" contest on that date. The rules were in the Vestnik so be sure to read them and re-read them and we would like each club to have at least one entry if possible but you may have two or three. We have an older age for this contest so you big girls may have your last chance to enter. Let's see how many entries we can have. The competition will be held at Lodge No. 187, Round Rock March 16 in conjunction with the district meeting.

April 19th and 20th, we will have our youth leaders' retreat at Camp Val Verde so all of you leaders, assistants, leaders-in-training (LITs), and your spouses are encouraged to attend this retreat.

Oh yes, I already skipped one date, the Longhorn Recreation Lab in Brownwood on March 9th through March 14th. You may contact State Youth Director Dorothy Massey for more details on this lab, but I encourage you to attend if at all possible.

I will try to visit most of the youth clubs in the next few months, so if you have any special date you would prefer please let me know.

Let's all come to the skating party February 17th and start 1980 with a big turnout. We plan to see you there.

DIRECTORS' MESSAGE TO THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE SPJST: In our annual audit made this the 14th day of January 1980 on the progress of our Society in 1979, we are happy to report good news to you.

Good solid gains have been made in the increase in membership, total insurance sold, and a substantial gain in assets. In 1979 an overall gain of $1,655,158.12 in assets over the previous year reflects sound management.

The financial statement, as audited by the board of directors on January 14, 1980 and assisted by the officers of our Society, should be good news to all of our membership. We urge you to review the

financial statement which appears in the Vestnik, which is our report to you.

1979 was a good year, the sale of over twenty million dollars of insurance sold this past year is a tribute to the combined efforts of the sales representatives and the insurance underwriting department.

All of you who participated deserve credit for a job well done.

Besides our other duties and responsibilities during 1979, We, the directors, approved loans to our members totaling $4,338,118.62.

In this convention year we wish you a Healthy and a Prosperous New Year.

LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Readers: Lodge No. 25 Youth Club held their monthly meeting Friday, January 18 at the lodge hall.

Plans were made for a Valentine Party to be held Sunday, February 10 from 2 to 4 p.m.; homemade Valentines will be judged, so begin working on yours now..

The youth club plans to sell' refreshments during the dances to raise money.

The calendar posters for 1980 were judged and the following were awarded prizes: lst--Suzann Macalik, 2nd--Mike Honza, 3rd-- Robert Honza. Each participant received an honorable mention prize. These posters are on display in the youth room and important dates are noted on them.

A birthday party honoring Joyce Trojacek and Lisa Rejcek immediately followed the meeting. An overnight party then followed. Everyone had a fun-filled and very "tiring" time.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: We had a real good turnout for our social games. We hope to have more members next time but sometimes it is hard to remember when something starts up again after taking a long break.

Remember that we have our social games every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and bring a guest. There is free popcorn and coffee for everyone and the children can all skate or play in the recreation room, so come and join us and enjoy the fun plus fellowship we have.

We want you to remember that our youth club meets the first Tuesday of every month. The next meeting will be February 5th at 7 p.m. Parents are invited to come and bring their children and see what we do in our youth club. I know they would enjoy it and gain a new outlook on our lodge and all we do for it._ We hope each of you will have a nice and safe week and weekend.

Treasurer William Rek gave the treasury reportand collected dues.

We have four new members, Jackie and Michael Marek, Melissa and Pamela Brandt. We are glad to have them.

We made plans for a Valentine party for next month. Each youth will bring Valentines and a decorated box or bag.

Mothers present were Mrs. Anna Bartos, Mrs. Patricia Dybala, Mrs. Josephine Brandt, Mrs. Janet Marek, Mrs. Bernice Rek, Mrs. Rita Vanek and Mrs. Vlasta Bartos.

The youth members voted for the meetings to start at 7 p.m., instead of 7:30 p.m. The next meeting will be, held February 11th at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary.

Our youth leader, Mrs. Nellene Spacek, then discussed, with us, about the mess left on the floor after dances because of people throwing cakes all over the floor; to solve this we decided that there will be no more cakes allowed in the hall.

Mrs. Spacek also encouraged us to try to attend as many meetings as possible because those who do not attend the meetings will not be able to go on any trips with us.

After the meeting was adjourned we all sat down to a movie--"The Ghost and Mr. Chicken", starring Don Knotts.

Everyone seemed to enjoy it very much.

I would like to take this time to send a very special "thanks" to Father Isidore who orders all the movies for us and takes the time to show them to us. We appreciate it.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Readers, The Robstown Youth Club has a very busy year planned. Our regular meeting will be held on the third Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. at the Scout Hut. Plans have been made to go bowling, to see "Holiday on Ice" and attend the District VII spring meeting March 23rd in Corpus Christi, hosted by Lodge No. 79.

Wednesday, January 30, 1980 LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Readers, The January meeting was held Friday the 18th.

A meeting and skating party was held January 19th at the lodge hall. We had a good attendance and a good time seemed to be had by all.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 28, East Bernard; in behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother JOE S. GAJEVSKY, who passed away at his home December 1st, 1979 at Orchard, Texas, at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 5 days.

Brother Gajevsky was born in Czechoslovakia and came to the United States with his parents, John and Teresa Gajevsky, about 60 years ago.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m.

December 3rd from Knesek and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. T.W. Moore officiating. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Rosenberg.

Brother Gajevsky lived in Orchard most of his life. His occupation was farming and he was a former member of the school board in Orchard for many years, also a good member of the SPJST Lodge No. 28 in East Bernard.

Survivors include his wife, Hertha Gajevsky of Orchard; two sons, Marvin Gajevsky of Pearland and Delbert Gajevsky of Needville; sisters, Agnes Hruzek of Wallis, Lydia Breitzke, Wilhemina Beran and Betty Ruyle, all of Houston; one brother, Alvin Gajevsky of Orchard; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Wilbur Mikeska, Gary Reinecker, Gerald Mikeska, Gene Hruzek, Charles Reinecker and Richard Breitzke.

The Knesek and Sons Funeral Home of Wallis was in charge of arrangements.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY In behalf of our membership of SPJST Lodge No. 117, Robstown, we wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother ALBERT JURECKA, who passed away Sunday, December 2, 1979 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the age of 71.

He was born at Granger, Texas on July 14, 1908 and moved to Robstown area in 1923, where he lived until about two years ago, he and his wife moved to Louisiana. He was a veteran of World War II. He worked in pipeline and construction work until he retired several years ago.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 5th; a funeral mass was celebrated at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant, Louisiana with Msgr. Donald Blanchard officiating. He was buried with military honors in the Holy Rosary Cemetery in St. Amant.

Funeral arrangements were by Welsh Funeral Home in Gonzales, Louisiana.

Survivors include his wife, Isabel Jurecka of Baton Rouge; four sisters, Elizabeth Cervenka of Granger, Georgia Sumbera of Austin, Anna B. Parsons of Robstown and Eba Rose Smith of Houston; three brothers, I.J. Jurecka of Galveston, Hubert Jurecka of Corpus Christi and Delphine Jurecka of Laredo.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of the(t entire membership of Galveston Lodge No. 173, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister MOLLIE MACIK, who passed away Sunday, January 7, 1980 at the Memorial Hospital of Galveston County, at the age of 78.

Sister Macik born October 3, 1901 in Czechoslovakia, was a resident of Galveston County and had lived in La Marque for the past 18 years.

She was a member of the Galveston Lodge and had been a financial secretary for the lodge for many years, until 1963.

She was a very active member as well as her recent deceased husband, Louis Macik, until their illnesses.

Rosary was recited January 8th at 7 p.m. at James Crowder Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held January 9th at 10 a.m. at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in La Marque, with Msgr. Frank A. Lagana officiating.

Burial was at Mt. Olivet Mausoleum in Dickinson, under the direction of James Crowder Funeral Home.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Louise Trail of Lake Jackson; three sons, Albert Macik of La Marque, Freddie Macik of Galveston and Raymond Macik of Clear Lake; two sisters, Miss Annie Valusek of Pearland and Mrs. Emilie Macik of Rosharon; two brothers, John Valusek of Alvin and Fred Valusek of Galveston; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren .

Mrs. Hruska was a native of Czechoslovaikia, she immigrated to Texas when she was seven years old and settled with her family in the Red Ranger Community, where she lived most of her life Slrie was married to the late Steve Hruska, who died in 1972.

Mrs. Hruska was a member and served for several years as secretary of SPJST Lodge No. 47. She was a member of Seaton Brethren Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Irma (Frank) Klinkovsky of Temple, a grandson and a great-grandson.

OLGA REZNICEK, age 70, who passed away Sunday, January 6th at her home following a

short illness.

Mrs. Reznicek immigrated to the United States from Czechoslovakia when she was four years old and lived, since then, in Bell County. She lived at Route 3, Temple.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 87 and of Seaton Brethren Church.

Mrs. Reznicek, a member of the Food Service Association, retired, after ten years, as a food service worker with the Temple Independent School District.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Harper-Talasek Funeral Chapel in Temple with the Reverend Albert Michalik officiating. Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Emil J. Reznicek of Temple; three daughters, Mrs. Helen Motl of Kinwood, Mrs. Olga Motl of Point Comfort, and Judy Reznicek of El Paso; a sister, Mrs. Marie Hruska of Temple; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

JOE E. SCASTA, who passed away Monday, January 14, 1980, in Bryan, Texas, at the age of 90.

Mr. Scasta, a retired farmer who for the past five years had resided in Bryan, was born on December 19, 1889, in the Wheelock Community. He was a lifelong resident of the area.

Funeral services were held January 15th at 2 p.m. at the Hillier Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bill Lanning, pastor of the Zion United Church of Christ, Kurten, officiating. Burial was in the Wheelock Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Adolph Scasta, of Lytle; a daughter, Mrs. Angie Dittfurth of Bryan; and 11 grandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Texas State Representative Brother Dan Kubiak This year will be an important one for owners of agricultural land who want to reduce their taxes.

In 1980, all local property tax offices will be required to offer productivity valuation to qualified landowners if they apply.

TO QUALIFY: You must be a U.S. citizen or an alien who is not required by federal law to register ownership of the land. U.S. corporations, trusts, partnerships, etc. may also qualify.

The land must have been devoted principally to agricultural use for at least five of the last seven years (or five of the last five years if the land is inside city limits.)

If you lease your land for agricultural purposes, it can still qualify if the above two criteria are met.

TO APPLY: You must file an application with each tax office where you want to qualify between Jan. 1 and April 1 of each year.

After you have qualified the first time, the tax assessor must mail you the correct form each year thereafter.

The application form is a two-page, sworn affidavit which requires you to give: your name and address, a legal description of the land you wish to

qualify, the principal use of this land for each of the last seven years, whether this land is in the city limits, and whether you qualify under the terms above.

HOW THE LAND WILL BE VALUED: If you qualify, your land will be valued according to a formula designed to estimate the value your property would have to someone buying it for purely agricultural purposes. Your land will be valued the same as other qualified land in the saime category in the jurisdiction.

IMPORTANT: At your request, the local tax assessor nit tell you what the value of your property will be if you qualify under the new law and whether that is higher or lower than your current tax roll value.

You should request this information before you complete the application, in order to make the best decision regarding your taxes.

IMPORTANT: In 1980, Texas school districts must get all agricultural land qualified under this new law or face reductions in state aid.

Your failure to qualify your land at your school tax office in 1980 could mean that your 1980 school taxes will be based on "full market value" for speculative purposes.

PENALTIES: If you qualify your land under this law and later change its use to a non-agricultural purpose, you will be required to pay a penalty based on the land's "fair market value" for each of the last five years plus seven percent interest.

This penalty does not apply if the change of use results from a condemnation or sale for right-of-way.

MARLIN ALCOHOL FUEL PLANT: A new alcohol fuel plant opened last week in Marlin, Falls County and will be a boon to that county's agricultural industry.

Owned by Delayne Sprinkles, the plant will produce up to 400 gallons of alcohol per week.

ROCKDALE ALCOHOL FUEL PLANT: The alcohol fuel plant in Rockdale is expected to open some time next month.

These two plants, plus the additional plants which will surely follow, lend District 36 the versatility in production which will someday help to make Texas the number one alcohol fuel-producing state. â&#x20AC;&#x201D;SPJST-
