Sunday, January 6 this editor attended the Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood meeting.

The meeting, conducted by President Robert Dobecka, Sr., was convened promptly on time and all of their business was conducted with much dispatch. Of course, Lodge Moravki Bratfi (Moravian Brethren) No. 6 was one of the original lodges founding our SPJST in July of 1897 and, surely, their membership is proud of that fact and carry on their lodge business in a very efficient fraternal lodge manner. Their' youth club is very active as can be attested to by Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz's letters including the one in this issue in the Youth Section.

Yours truly had been asked by Lodge No. 6 President Dobecka to attend and install their officers and the honor was accepted. Pictures of the 1980 Lodge No. 6 officers and delegates appear in this issue. *** Wednesday, January 16 we attended the SL meeting and also spent about 10 minutes with the Finance Committee forthe 1980 convention in their meeting.

The committee plans meetings again Saturday, February 16 and possibly Sunday, February 17, if necessary and also another meeting Saturday, March 29nd, if needed, Sunday, March 30.

Joe E. Seasta, 90, passed away at his daughter's home in Bryan on Monday, January 14th. Funeral services were held from Hillier Funeral . Home in Bryan ( January 15th, with burial in the Wheelock Cemetery. Brother Seasta was a longtime member of Lodge No. 94 Wheelock.

*** Keep in mind that the By-Laws Committee will meet Saturday, February 2, 1980. There is a continuation of SL President Morris' recommendations to the By-Laws Committee in Secretary Thelma Hrncir's letter; read them.

You will be reading of these decisions made in i SL Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's minutes when they are printed in our Vestnik.

If you have read (and we hope you have) this editorial this far, you can see that things are beginning to MOVE and, quite frankly, they must; the convention will be here and so will June before we realize it! More next week; the hands on the clock of Father Time are relentlessly moving on!

NEWSBRIEFS Mrs. Marie (Steve) Hruska, 72, passed away in a Temple hospital in the early morning hours of Thursday, January 17th. Funeral services were held from Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple, on Friday, January 18th, with burial in the Seaton Cemetery. Sis. Hruska was a longtime member of Lodge No. 47 Seaton. She was the mother of Supreme Lodge Employee Irma Klinkovsky. --NAM

Mrs. Anita (Charlie) Kaiser, 57, passed away in a Taylor hospital the afternoon of Wednesday, January 16th. Funeral services were held from the Condra Funeral Chapel on Friday,' January 18th, with burial in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Sis. Kaiser was a member of Lodge 29 Taylor and the mother of Secretary Michael Kaiser. -- NAM

BY-LAWS COMMITTEE REPORT Continued from Jan. 9th Issue of Vestnik Dear Readers: The following recommendations were reviewed by the By-Laws Committee at its last meeting held December 16. They were also submitted by SL Pres. Nick Morris, and is the conclusion to my report printed in the January 9 issue of the Vestnik.

A portion of Art. 103 conflicts with Art. 78(b) and (c). The report mentioned in Art. 103 is, in fact, prepared by the financial secretaries of the local lodges, so that responsibility should not be assigned to the secretary and should be deleted from that portion of Art. 103 and covered under 105 under the duties of the financial secretary. (Verbal explanation later).

Also, the last sentence of Art. 103 is a repetition of Art. 95(g), as is the last portion of the last sentence of Art. 106.

In Art. 106, pertaining to the duties of the local lodge treasurer, we need a revision in what appears at the top of Page 86 of the By-law book. At the present time, it states that the treasurer, at the request of the financial secretary, pays "...all bills of the lodge..." which could be interpreted literally to mean all the bills for payment of everything that the lodge purchased, used, and consumed. What was intended here was that the financial secretary requests the treasurer to pay the mortuary billing statement mailed him from the Supreme Lodge financial secretary once a month, not the bills from the beverage company, hardware store, etc., etc. Then the article could continue "and delivers all checks and statements..,."

Even though it was my recommendation to the By-Law Committee at the last convention to create a separate and standing Finance Committee, I have now come to the conclusion (as I stated in my recommendations to the committee before the last convention),* that the duties of the present Finance Committee could just as well be assigned to the By-Law Committee. The By-Law

If they assume the additional tasks presently assigned to the Finance Committee, this would cut down on expenses and still achieve the same results. I see no reason why the By-Law Committee could not fulfill the same functions as the presently instituted Finance Committee. (*Please refer to Vestnik issue of March 31, 1976, p. 6, The next meeting of the By-Laws Committee will be held February 2 at the SL Bldg., beginning at 9:30. LODGE NO. 47, SEATON

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last monthly lodge meeting was held Sunday, January 6, 1980 at 2 p.m. with lodge president, Brother Jerry Pechal, in charge.

Flag Bearers Gene Skrabanek and David Pechal brought in the flags and led in the pledge to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer in respect to the memory of deceased member, Brother Jack Allen Hudnall, Sr., and to all departed members also. Our deepest sympathy to the survivors and may our departed "brother rest in eternal peace.

President Pechal welcomed all to the meeting and ^recognized the following visitors: George Pavelka, Ann Balusek, Marylou Skrabanek, Joe Zvolanek and Darlene Pechal.

We had postponed the election of the youth leader until this meeting and thought the leader would be sworn in with the other officers. There wasn't anyone ready to take on the job at the onset of the meeting but, after lunch, the officers confirmed the acceptance of Sister Shirley Patterson as youth leader and Sisters Annie Shenkir and Judy Motl as her assistants. Congratulations and best wishes for success in the continued growth of youth club. (See photos accompanying this letter.)

Supreme Lodge Vice President Brother Bernard M. Gebala gave the charge to the membership and administered the oath to the lodge officers and wished them well in their positions. He also stated that cooperation of the members will make the task a lot easier.

A TRIBUTE TO JOE A. SLAVIK Joe A. Slavik passed away on January 6, 1980 at the age of 69. He was my uncle.

He had suffered from an illness he had several years.

He was very active in SPJST before his illness. He was one of the organizers of Lodge No. 185, New Braunfels; and he was the first President of Lodge No. 185.

About three years ago he insured me with SPJST. He told me to get involved with the organization, because of all the friendly people, and because of my Czechoslovakian heritage. I am thankful he showed me the way to a wonderful group of people.

Following is a poem I found on a card, I do not know who wrote it. I would like to dedicate it to my Uncle Joe.

Wednesday, January 23, 1980 THE ROSE STILL GROWS BEYOND THE WALL Near a shady wall a rose once grew, Budded and blossomed in God's free light, Watered and fed by morning dew, Shedding its sweetness day and night.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Mr. Sefcik, Since my husband and I have handled the details tO • the benefit barbecue and dance for one of our members, our reporter asked that I forward the information to you for printing in the Vestnik.

Brother Anton and Sister Gladys Mogonye's first grandchild was given very little hope for survival at birth due to complications with her lungs. This precious hit of life has grown to the healthy age of three months, and, thanks to God, is a wonder to behold.

During the first four weeks of her life, she lived at Seton Hospital in the NeoNatal center. The care she received there was miraculous and heartwarming

- but quite expensive. To help defray the expenses of the care, Lodge No. 18, Elgin, is preparing for a benefit dance and noon barbecue. The meal will be served beginning about 11:30 and will consist of chicken and Elgin sausage, potato salad and all the usual trimmings for such a feast. The dance will begin at 2 p.m. featuring Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six. At 3:30 and until 4:30 there will be a break in the dancing for a presentation of the Flutter Wheels, a square dance group from Austin which includes Brother Roy Simank and his wife. The dance music will begin again and last until everyone gets tired.

LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE

Dear Members and Friends, Our meeting was called to order by President Edwin Marek. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by everyone and, afterwards, we stood in silence for the deceased members.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Correspondence were read by Secretary Nelda Marek after which the committee chairmen gave their reports.

We discussed our rules and regulations and the changes which were brought up at the last meeting. After much discussion, we accepted the changes and proposed to accept our new rules and regulations for the coming year.

The subject of our lodge putting an advertisement of one page in the convention paper was again discussed and we decided to put a picture of our lodge and a short history below. Our delegates and alternates names were printed in the Vestnik but we omitted the following alternates: Jerry Zavodny, Gladys Tyroch, Laveda Geistman, Regina Zabcik, and Martha Zavodny.

We have been having lots of trouble getting a youth leader and assistant. We know this is a big job and anyone taking these jobs would have a big responsibility. We want to thank Norma Andel for taking the youth leader's job at the last meeting and Vallie Mae Haisler who volunteered to be the assistant youth leader and was accepted by the membership.

The youth have planned to have a social to be held January 25th at the lodge along with the adult social. Children are to bring their favorite games. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the meal will be served at 7 p.m. A covered dish supper

7 will be served and the ladies are asked to please bring a covered dish.

Plans were made to honor the 50-year members again this year. We appointed a committee to plan this event; it consists of Norma Andel, Pat Sebek, and Laverne Cabla. I will be giving you more details in the near future as to when it will take place and who the 50 year members are who will be honored.

Raymond Gerich was accepted as a new member and we would like to welcome him to our lodge.

We extended a Happy Birthday to Joe Haisler who was at the meeting and is having a birthday in January. We would like to wish all our members, who may have a birthday or anniversary this month, our best wishes.

Door prizes were won by Milton Zavodny, Bertha Haisler, Melanie Zavodny and John Paul Chervenka.

Bro. Leonard Mikeska installed our new officers and board members. He reminded us of our duties and fraternalism.

We all want to thank Arleen Cabla for the good job she did as reporter these past few years. It makes me proud to see the young people like Arleen to show interest in our lodge. There is a place always for the young to take part in our lodge.

Our next meeting has been changed due to some conflict, so please make a note of this change to the first Wednesday of the month which will be on February 6, at 7:30 p.m., so remember this date and time and please attend our meetings for it takes everyone to run an interesting lodge.

V2STNiK LODGE NO, 25, ENNIS Dear Members and Friends: Our January 9 meeting was called to order by President Glenn Kudrna after the members had enjoyed a delicious covered dish supper which started at 6 p.m. Each member was asked to bring a covered dish. The lodge furnished the meat, bread, tea and coffee.

After the meeting was called to order, Sister Judy Patton, the recording secretary, read a report of the Executive Committee meeting which was held in the dining room January 2 at 7 p.m. and the minutes of the last meeting, also thank-you notes and other correspon dence.

Brother Johnie Hrabina brought to the members' attention that a distinguished guest was attending our meeting and introduced District III Director Sid Pokladnik. Director Pokladnik cornmended the outgoing officers on their devotion to their jobs and for a job well done. He also congratulated and welcomed the new officers and wished them a successful year A vote was taken on a motion made by Sister Judy Kudrna to donate $25 to the United Fund. It was approved.

Three new members: Josephine N. F'atak, Gregory Lane Loftis and Frane.Js Ellen Alexander were approved and welcomed to our lodge.

Brother Van Fowler nominated Sister Judy Kudrna for sergeant-at-arms after the Nominating Committee reported they had not been able to get a nominee. The motion was voted on and approved after Sister Kudrna accepted.

Brother James Williford of the Auditing Committee, made a favorable report on the auditing of the books.

Brother Johnie Hrabina and Celestina Hrabina received 50-year membership pins. Past President Van Fowler presented Brother Hrabina his pin in a presentation ceremony. Sister Hrabina was not present.

Wednesday, January 23, 1980 LODGE NO. 179, WARRENTON Dear Members and Friends: As of the sound of the bells, President Harold Bergmann called our regular meeting of January 10th to order by leading the group in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

The roll call of officers revealed all present.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting, and Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both were accepted as given.

Dorothy Oltmann gave the mortuary standing and presented the lodge with the refund check received from the Supreme Lodge and also read the letter included. Then she read the letter transfer of Sister Patsy Renee Zwernemann from Lodge No. 17; she was warmly accepted into our midst, and we hope she will take an active part in our lodge's activities and enjoy our meetings.

The Band Committee re' ited that the contract has been signed with the band for our annual event of August 10th.

For new business, the president stressed that local lodge dues are due in January and should be taken care of as soon as possible. He also appointed an Auditing Committee consisting of Jeanette Schoenst, Ora Lee Wicket and Edith Pfeiffer to audit the books by the time we have our next regular meeting.

The Food Committee stated that, for our February meeting, the lodge will furnish sausage and members are to bring a covered dish to help complete the menu.

We had a fairly nice attendance of members and visitors, included on our guest list were Sister Loyce Shepler and, as special guest, our District I director Brother John Kubena; he made a brief but interesting talk and also gave us a few important pointers concerning the convention in June. He praised our lodge, though small, for keeping it so very active. We gained nineteen new members during the past years, and we will strive to pass that figure for 1980.

Remember our next regular meeting is February 14th at 7:30 p.m. with the youth club entertaining the group with a Valentine party.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned and, afterwards, members and guests enjoyed baked turkey and dressing and various delicious side dishes and delectable cakes and refreshments.

LODGE NO. 180, BURLESON The January 3rd meeting got under way with Randy Payne, our newt; -elected flag bearer, leading us with the pledge of allegiance to the flag. The members observed a few moments of silence for the sick and the deceased; this time for Brother Joe Krivanek of Lodge No. 92.

Then our outgoing President Dennis Barabas asked our special guest, District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik to do the honors of installing the new officers for the year. After the installation of all the officers, Brother Sid praised the outgoing president on the great job he had done for Ledge No. 180, Burleson and all of the people with him, nmly--elected and re-elected for the tine .job they had done in making Lodge 180 grow as it has. President Barabas thanked everyone for helping him in the past two years and turned the meeting over to our new president, Jerry Janek.

Dear Members: The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 142 was called to order by President Henry Linhart on Friday, January 14 at 8:03 p.m.

Members recited the pledge of allegiance and stood for a moment of silence in memory and honor of our deceased members and in special memory of Brother Jerry Baletka and George Wayne Janik.

Minutes of the last meeting and correspondence were read by Secretary Alice Jochen.

The committee chairmen also gave their reports for the month.

The Board of Trustees held its meeting December 28th at 8 p.m., and all board members were present including our president, Henry Linhart.

Those on the sick list were Michael Janik, Georgiana Stanley, Peggy Kidwilea and Herbert Jochen. We hope everyone is well on the road of recovery.

Our Christmas party turned out to be a real success. There was plenty of good food and fellowship; also the youth, under the direction of our youth leader, Henrietta Veselka, deserve a hand for the fine program they presented.

Dear Members and Friends: We had a beautiful day for our meeting Sunday.

All reports were approved as read.

Sister Renfro read a letter from our Insurance Headquarters on a contest to be held on insurance sales for a free trip to the convention.

Sister Pavey read a Christmas thank you note from Sister Helen Zich.

New members accepted were Jo Ann Norris and Katherine Marie Norris.

Our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Clevland, appointed Sister Carrie Bell Milan as assistant youth leader.

We extend a big thank you to the youth club for all their help in the cleanup Sunday before their meeting. Even our young ones, Michael and Blaine Mason, got in the act. It was greatly appreciated.

Following their meeting, they all went out for a pizza party.

Brother Don Steinman was home ill all week, Kelly Stoeppelman was hospitalized for several days, Sister Martha Milan was entered in the hospital today.

We hope they all get well soon.

Our country-western dance Saturday was a full house. Jerry Max Lane will be back February 2nd.

Brother Frankie Milan was our door prize recipient.

12 LODGE NO. 80, HOLLAND Dear Members: We held our regular meeting of Lodge No. 80 Sunday, January 6th at 2 p.m.

The retiring president, Brother Ricky Benner of Lodge 80 called the meeting to order.

After the pledge of allegiance and reading of the minutes of the December meeting, retiring President Benner asked the Honorary President of Lodge 80 to install the newlyelected officers for 1980, so yours truly, Joe Barabas, Jr., had the honor to perform the ceremony on the following officers: President D.I. Bohac, Vice President Terry Bertrand, Recording Secretary Alvin Martinets, Financial Secretary Clifton Martinets, and Treasurer Glen Latham. After the installation, the new officers took charge of the remainder of the meeting.

Brother Bohac, the new president, made a nice acceptance talk. He thanked the outgoing President Benner for the much hard work he had done while he held that position of being president.

The Bar, Dance and Kitchen Committees, all had good reports.

At this meeting, as usual, the various committee members were appointed by the president and vice president for this year. On the Auditing Committee we have Glenda (Latham) Liles, John T. Barabas and David Ivicic.

regular meeting place, Kathy Ahlstrom opened her home to us for our meeting, We are very grateful Kathy.

The meeting was presided over by our new officers who were elected at our December meeting. President Mike Ahlstrom, Vice President Alfred Horelka, Secretary Adele Donaldson, Treasurer Slyvia Kocian, Financial Secretary Adolph Motal, Reporter Evelyn Horelka and Youth Leader Kathy Ahlstrom.

Convention delegates are Adolph Motal and Alfrdl Horelka.

We were happy to have District VI Youth Counselor Elsie Brdecka and her husband attend our meeting. Our youth club is planning to host the District VI YAD this year.

The members voted to have their third annual Czech Festival in May or June.

Matt Vanek was appointed chairman with Frank Rokyta and Evelyn Horelka as co-chairmen. We hope to have the help of all our members to make this event another great success.

LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE Lodge No. 107 held its regular monthly meeting January 6th at 4:30 p.m.

President Bayer called the meeting to order and Jay Herschbach led the members in the pledge to the flag.

All the officers answered the roll call.

Minutes were read and approved as read.

Financial Secretary Purchis reported there were a few delinquent members.

Treasurer Sralla also gave his report.

An up-to-date roster is to be ordered.

Due to the illness of Christine Baumann, a new Screening Committee was named: this committee is composed of Georgie Zedek, Lori Hrna and John Burleson.

New members accepted on a recommendation by the Screening Committee are Corey Weldon Simpson, Shannon Paige Simpson, Lisa Lynn Ploch and John Hoelscher.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer stated the Christmas party was a success. The „bus is to be taken to San Antonio for repairs.'

Valentines will be made at the next meeting. She also gave a financial report.

President Ba yer gave a financial report and also that he bought 100 new -chairs.

This is an added asset, the extra chairs will come in handy. Too often extra

LODGE NO. 30, TAITON RULES AND REGULATIONS 1) Meetings shall be held the first Sunday of every month, unless something unforeseen happens.

2) The meetings shall start promptly at 1:30 p.m. Exceptions will be made.

3) Premiums are to be paid promptly.

When premiums are overdue one year, the member shall be subject to suspension for ninety days. If paid within that time member shall be reinstated and, if not, member shall be expelled.

4) The election of officers shall be held annually in December and, in order to be elected, the member must attend the majority of the lodge meetings.

5) The Auditing Committee shall audit books once a year. The auditors shall be appointed by the president of the local lodge.

6) The salary of the officers shall be paid annually in December.

7) At the death of a member a monogrammed flower arrangement shall be sent not to exceed $10. These shall be sent only to those who pay local dues.

8) The premium refunds are to be mailed by the financial secretary. The financial secretary shall also be responsible for sending statements. All

9) The secretary shall take care of all correspondence.

10)The treasurer shall pay assessments monthly and also pay all bills, if any.

11) If an officer would not be able to attend a meeting, a substitute shall be appointed to preside in her or his place.

LODGE NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI

Dear Members: We held our meeting 10 January 1980 at 7 p.m. All new officers were given the oath by outgoing President Frank C. Sacky.

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by President Frank Veselka who led us in the pledge. There were a total of twenty-five members present.

Minutes were read and, with one correction, were approved.

Lodge No. 79 will host the District VII spring meeting 23rd March 1980. We will serve a sausage dinner starting at 11:30 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. The cost of dinner will be $2.50 per plate and youth who will be in the program will get their meal for $1.50.

We have one member who is eligible for a 50-year SPJST membership pin. Mrs. Agnes (Elzner) Bren will be given the pin at the spring meeting of District VII. We want to thank SVPS Chapter No. 30 for their contribution to the library fund.

I wish our members would show more interest in the library; to date only a very few members have contributed. Let's all get behind this worthy r�.oject.

Our next meeting will be held 14 February 1980 at 7 p.m. Invite a friend to our next meeting.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: We had our regular monthly meeting Monday, January 14th. The meeting was brought to order by President Ralph Smith. The pledge was recited followed by silent prayer.

The new officers were sworn in by Dorothy Smith. They were President Ralph Smith, 1st Vice President James Wilcox, 2nd Vice President Hughey Smith, Secretary Creola Wilcox, Financial Secretary Hazel Smith, Treasurer Mary %McInnis and Youth Leader Elaine Erwin. The trustees were also sworn in.

We voted to have a Valentine dance Wednesday, February 13th; the music will be furnished by a band named The Country Pride. Please come and enjoy the music.

We had several new members join the lodge and they are: James Berger, Morris Guile, Sally Guile, Billy Charles Baker, Mary Frances Johnson, Charles Rambo, Curtis Lee Garner, Bessie Durnell, Sam Wiley, Cecil Crouch, Barry Sharp, James Fleming, Robert Millwee, Jeffrey White and Richard Reineman. We had one juvenile member join and it was Shiela Nealy.

The social game night will be every Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to come out and join us. There will be free popcorn and coffee.

We hope everyone has a real nice week and weekend, and we want to send a get well wish to Eddie Blackwell.

Dear Members: The Saturday night dance with the LeRoy Matocha Band was very well attended and enjoyed by all; as usual, everyone had areal good time. Mr. and Mrs. Green and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Recenger were at the door. I just won't be able to name all who were at the dance as I would like to.

Our president, Victor Peter and his wife were among the crowd to welcome everyone.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB Happy New Year to everyone!

This is my first article after taking over the reporter's job, and I will try to do a good job like Sister Rose Steinman did.

Sister Marie Tesar is our president and treasurer for this year, Bernadette Svacina is our vice president, and yours truly, Mary Ann Krivanek, is secretary and reporter.

Evidently our first meeting of the year (being on January 2nd) must have been forgotten by most of the members after the rush of the holidays, so we dispensed with our meeting and played games and had a delicious lunch.

Sister Eva Dockery was our only member with a birthday this month, so we sang "Happy Birthday" to her and wished her many more.

It was good to see Sister Josephine Prochaska and have her with us again and hope we see her and many more of our members who were not around much last year.

FEATURES BROTHER DAN KUBIAK HONORED State Rep. Dan Kubiak, D-Rockdale,

was honored Friday for outstanding legislative service during the 76th annual state convention of the Texas Farmers Union.

Kubiak was selected by the statewide farm organization for "consistent support and outspoken leadership on behalf of the family farmers and ranchers of Texas," said Jay Naman, president of TFU. "The 66th Legislature will be regarded as one in which a progressive step was taken for rural interests, especially passage of the Family Farm and Ranch Security Act." "The support given to that and several other key bills by Rep. Kubiak is deeply appreciated by our organization and we are proud to bestow this honor upon him."

Kubiak, known as "Mr. Gasohol", successfully sponsored two bills which legalize alcohol fuel production in Texas.

JAVA KA JP PIANIST PRIZE-WINNING CZECH PIANIST TO PERFORM AT CORPUS CHRISTI, BEEVILLE AND KINGSVILLE Miss Jana Ka g parova will give a piano recital in the following places: Texas A and I University-Kingsville February 7 at the Fine Arts Center, Recital Hall, Bee County College February 9 at the Gertrude Jones Auditorium in the Fine Arts Building, and at .Corptis Christi State University Warren Theater for Performing Arts February 12. All recitals begin at 8:00 p.m.

A native of Czechoslovakia, Miss Kag parova studied pianO at the Prague Conservatory and then at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (under Prof.

F. Maxian), from which she graduated with honors. At the age of 20, she played Beethoven's Fifth with the Czechoslovak Philharmonic at Rudoltinum Hall in Prague.

In 1967 Miss Ka g parova won the Smetana International Competition, the highest-rated Czech competition for piano.

She then chose not to return to her homeland and came . to the United

States, first as a scholarship student at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where she received her Masters degree and then, upon the recommendation of the renowned Rudolph Firkugny, she entered the Manhattan School of Music in New York for two years.

Presently she is continuing her studies under Thaddeus Sadlowski, the internationally renowned Polish pianist.

Miss Kag parova is an Award-winning pianist in the Smetana, Beethoven and 20th Century Composers' competitions.

November 21, 1979, Miss Kagparova performed at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City. Her brilliant technique and vigorous, affirmative musical expression, which is characteristic of a mature artist, coupled with her pleasant youthful personality, won her much critical acclaim from the New York music critics as well as the capacity audience.

The recital here will include works by Beethoven, Chopin and Lizst, as well as works by Czech composers Czerny, Smetana and Slavicky.

YOUTH SECTION From The State Youth Director Dear Members: We are into another New Year and another chance to make a fresh start and opportunity to do things we fully intended to get done "last year". What better time than now to start planning and earnestly working toward making our SPJST Youth Department better than last year? What better time to make that resolution to attend the meetings and activities planned for the Youth Club and mother lodges? We are all striving for the same goals and the more people working together the better chance we have to fulfill those goals.

During the District Youth Counselors' fall meeting a slogan was adopted that I think expresses our feelings well. Sis. Melinda Wilson, DYC I suggested: "We support today's SPJST Youth for tomorrow's SPJST Leaders". Isn't that what our Youth Department is really all about? We want to raise our youth to believe in the SPJST and to teach them that they have a very important place in our Society. That is our desire for 1980, but we will need your help and support to accomplish this goal to the fullest.

Since this is the Convention Year, there will be more activities than usual. The Miss SPJST contest for each district will be at the spring district meetings, plus all the usual YADs and camp during the year. During previous years we have had the district posters judged at the convention. As some of you know, we have scrapbooks rather than posters at the YADs now. However, this year, the scrapbooks will be judged at the YADs and not at the convention. In our discussion it was decided that the posters did not get the recognition they deserved at the convention and the scrapbooks should be judged at the YADs as they are every year.

I hope the last quarterly report is not an indication of how the year will go. I know how busy December was for everyone but the reports did not come in as they should have and I was a little disappointed with the overall atten-

dance. I think this is partially due to some of the smaller clubs. They are not having enough members to get a reimbursement check, therefore, they are reluctant to send in the reports.

Every youth member is important and even if there are only a few at the meetings, we like to know about them.

Maybe to have at least ten members attending the meetings the phone or mail could be used to encourage new members to come to the meetings or encourage the members who are not regularly attending. Let ;them know they have an important place in the Youth Clubs and they are missed when they are not there.

Perhaps to invite a new member to the socials will help them to get started coming to the meetings, but be sure they know the socials are planned at monthly meetings and they are expected to help with the plans.

Youth Leaders, don't forget that you are not working alone. Anytime you need help or have a question, let your District Youth Counselor or me know. We are eager to do what we can because we are very interested in what you are doing. We ask you to attend the training classes planned for you and the Youth Leaders' Retreat scheduled for April 19-20 at Camp Val Verde. These are fun days but they are times to get questions answered and problems at least talked about, if not solved. These sessions are planned for anyone interested in the Youth Department, including youth leaders, assistants and spouses.

1980 Rules For MISS SPJST CONTEST AGE: Any SPJST female member at least 15 and no older than 20 as of Jan. 1, 1980.

MARITAL STATUS: Single thru the time of the '80 Convention Coronation.

MEMBERSHIP: A member of SPJST at least 6 mo. prior to lodge candidate selection.

ATTIRE: Long formal in Speech Contest & Coronation (District and State) SELECTION: Lodge: No lodge eliminations; lodges can send as many candidates to district as they wish, who have never held the title of "Miss SPJST".

District: Competition will be at each district's spring meeting (unless the district desires a separate date) but not later than May 1st, 1980. The District Youth Counselor will arrange selection of at least 3 judges. The district competition will be in two separate contests:

TALENT: Time limit: 3 minutes Judged on: Stage Presence - 20 pts.

Technique - 30 pts.

Rendition - 30 pts.

Originality - 20 pts.

SPEECH: (Selected from topics listed below) Time limit: 3 minutes Judged on: Appearance & Poise - 25 pts.

Personality - 25 pts.

Speech Content - 30 pts.

Delivery - 20 pts.

The candidate with the highest total points from both contests shall represent the district at the convention. In case of a tie for first place, the two contestants who tied will present their speeches for judging again.

State: The seven finalists shall compete in three contests to determine "Miss SPJST". The competition will be at the convention in June 1980. The three contests are: INTERVIEW: (with judges) Judged on: Response - 35 pts.

Poise - 20 pts.

Personality - 30 pts.

Appearance - 15 pts.

TALENT: Same selection, time limit, and judging qualities as at district.

SPEECH: Same topic, time limit, and judging qualities as at district.

The judges for the three convention contests will be selected by the host lodge(s), with the consultation with the Youth Department of the Supreme Lodge.

PRIZES AND REIMBURSEMENT: All finalists will each receive a wrist watch and an allowance of $150 for the period spent at the convention. In addition, each will be furnished a banquet ticket, plus tickets for not more than two chaperones. Mileage will be paid to the San Antonio Convention site and return home for one vehicle at the rate set by the convention.

The winner will receive a scholarship of $500, which will be paid to the college, university, trade or business school of the winner's choice whenever she chooses to use it, and the title "Miss SPJST" for the duration of the convention.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY: An autobiography of each candidate will be submitted direct to the Youth Department of the Supreme Lodge at least 15 day's prior to the district competition, along with a recent photo.

16 local lodge youth leader, and in those lodges where there is no youth leader, they will be sent on request from the State Youth Director.

TABULATION: Tabulation of the convention contests will be conducted by 3 persons selected by the State Youth Director. Following each contest, the judges' results will be placed in a special envelope by the State Youth Director and sealed until opened by the Tabulating Committee and announced by the President of the Supreme Lodge. In the case of a tie, only the speech portion would be repeated and re-judged, judging to be on Speech Content and Delivery only.

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members and Readers: The youth club held their meeting January 6th with a good attendance. • The month of December was a busy month, with practicing programs and making Christmas gifts. We visited the West Rest Haven December 12th where we had a Christmas program, had refreshments and gave gifts. They all enjoyed it very much, we also had a program January 9th.

December 16th, we had our Christmas party, with a supper, youth program and a visit from Santa Claus. The young and old members enjoyed the party. I want to thank each one of you for helping me and my assistant leader with the youth program and also decorating our lodge No. 6 building, it was very pretty. Thank you very much.

We had a New Year's Eve -party at the lodge. Games were played and we had plenty of food to eat. Everyone had fun.

I read the rules for the Miss SPJST contest for the 1980 SPJST Convention. I

hope our girls can go.

The youth club members are selling Rubbermaid products, anyone wishing to order some, please let the youth members know.

We had our first one Thursday, January 17th. We had a good attendance but we hope that more start coming and joining us in the fun we have. The youth get to skate and there is free popcorn and coffee for everyone.

We decided to wait until after the cold weather was over to have our youth dance. We will have it on the radio and in the paper when we set a date.

The youth club collected $1,519 from the tickets on the television and kept only $400 for the cost of the television and tickets. That left $1,119 to donate to the floor fund. We sure appreciate everyone's help.

Remember that the youth meetings and socials are on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m.

We want to invite everyone to come out on every Thursday to the social games at 7:30 p.m. Bring the kiddoes and you can all have a good time.

Fraternally, Charlene Bennett -SPJSTLODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Members and Friends: The month of December was a very special month for the youth and their parents. Assistant Youth Leader Eugene Hrncir made a trip to the SPJST Rest Home No. I in Taylor December 7th.

The club members prepared a gift box for the residents at the rest home and Brother Hrncir delivered it.

Rehearsals were held on different dates for the Christmas Pageant that was presented at the Jackson Woods Presbyterian Church, co-sponsored by the Presbyterian Youth Club and SPJST Youth Club. Refreshments were served in the fellowship hall.

The highlight of the month was singing carols at Retama Manor Nursing Home

in Robstown; several homes, and one especially we enjoyed was at the home of Helen Pavelka, Lodge No. 117 secretary.

Wasn't that a surprise, Helen? After returning to the Scout Hut, regular meeting was called to order by President Pam Steiger. The youth was anxiously waiting for the party to begin with the exchange of gag gifts. Everyone had much fun with these gag gifts that lasted throughout the evening; this all happened December 20th.

December 21st and 22nd, a bake sale was held at Model Market. The proceeds will be credited to each individual member to be used for his/her expenses at a spring outing or a trip to Astroworld.

Mrs. Kathryn Marek, Frances Faye McDonald, Edwin McDonald, Angie Hrncir and myself were in charge of the bake sale. There is no object in selling home-baked cakes, pies, cookies and candy.

The year ended with the ringing of the church bells at the Jackson Woods Presbyterian Church, with all present had the opportunity to pull the rope and hear the bells ringing in the New Year 1980. The evening began with plenty of popcorn and punch. Mrs. Hrncir and Mrs. Jurica brought popcorn poppers and were kept busy popping corn while George Alexander was setting up the movie projector. Finally everyone settled down and saw a movie "Stranger In My Forest," which was very educational and informative.

January was on the quiet side after the busy month of December. Our meeting was held January 19th, followed by a bowling trip and supper at Wienerschnitzel; a bowling trip is always a favorite with the youth clubbers.

The Newsletter Committee consisting of club officers; youth leader, Mrs. Hrncir and her assistants, Mrs. Jurica, Eugene Hrncir and Kenneth Foerster met on January 12th and discussed activities which would be preferred by the youth.

Coming up activities are social games (prizes furnished by the youth); regular meeting, followed by Valentine party February 16th (at that time Campbell labels are to be turned in); "Holiday On Ice - February 23rd; March----at the Harbor Playhouse, "Sound of Music," (a musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein); District VII spring meeting on March 23rd here in Corpus Christi hosted by Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi; Sunrise Services on the Bay-front on April 6th and a Lake Mathis trip in April with initiation.

May will be a busy month, beginning with a bake sale on the 10th; regular meeting on the 17th, and this will be an all day trip to Melequite Beach. more

The committee discussed other future activities but has not decided anything for certain until after the SPJST Convention which will be held in San Antonio June 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. There are plans made for a trip to Astroworld in late June.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 179, WARRENTON Dear Readers, Jeannie Eckermann presided at the regular business meeting of the Warrenton Youth Club of Lodge No. 179 January 10, 1980. Anna Key led the pledge of allegiance. Sue Schoenst had the roll call and minutes. Rhonda Eckermann gave the treasurer's report.

Doris Eckermann and Melissa Wickel are in charge of a movie for the teen members. Paula Key and Staci Schoenst are in charge of arrangements to see "Mountain Family Robinson".

Doug and Dennis DeLand were appointed to do the art work for the cover of our scrapbook.

Doris Eckermann was appointed to check on arrangements to bowl at La Grange.

It was decided to have a Valentine contest with every member making an original card. There will be prizes and gifts for all participants.

At our next meeting, February 14th we will host the entertainment for everyone, including all the adults with Valentine games. Jeanette Schoenst is responsible for the decorated boxes of Valentine candies.

We decided to visit the nursing homes of La Grange Sunday, February 10th.

We will meet at Warrenton Store at 1 p.m. We will distribute Valentines and candy to all the residents; therefore, we spent the remainder of the evening cutting out paper hearts through which we placed sticks of peppermint candy and inscribed them with special messages.

Director John Kubena from La Grange spoke to our club; thank you for your words of wisdom.

LODGE NO. 179, WARRENTON Dear Readers, The last business meeting of the Warrenton Youth Club Lodge No. 179 was very busy. We made 170 Valentines filled with candy canes to take to the nursing homes Sunday, February 10th.

We also looked at pictures to put in the scrapbook. Doug and Dennis Deland will draw our cover.

We will go to see the movie "Mountain Family Robinson" when it shows here.

The teenagers may go to a different movie, if they would like to.

We will also see about going bowling at the new bowling alley in La Grange.

Dear Friends, The Robstown Youth Club of Lodge No. 117 held its monthly meeting December 15th. The meeting was conducted by President Pam Steiger.

Roll call was then taken. Reports were given by various committee chairpersons.

An exchange of gag white elephant gifts, and refreshments followed the regular meeting. Afterward all of us boarded the youth club bus and went Christmas caroling.

Dear Members and Friends, We held our regular monthly meeting January 6th at 2 p.m.

President Gene Skrabanek called the meeting to order. Then lie asked David Motl to lead us in the pledge of allegiance and club motto.

Secretary Sherry Skrabanek called the roll and read the minutes of the last meeting. We had nineteen members, two visitors and three adults.

We received some correspondence from • Dorothy Massey about the "Miss SPJST" contest to be held at the District 11 spring meeting Sunday, March 16th.

Dear Readers, Academy SPJST Lodge No. 177 Youth Club meeting was called to order January 9th by Johnny Ray Hicks.

All officers were present, except our vice president, Michael Tureck. Our youth leader was ill and did not attend.

We wish her a speedy recovery.

We discussed the selling of our pool table.

It was voted to have our monthly social and go skating at Action World in Temple on January 19th.

Frances Dewitt, our reporter, resigned and I was appointed to serve as reporter.

At the last meeting we had two new members, Gary Dixon and David Breiner.

Our youth club hopes to do bigger and better things in 1980.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 186, Caldwell, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother, RUDOLPH LUKSA who passed away at the age of 75.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m.

Mr. Luksa was born October 22, 1904 in Snook, Texas, son of John and Emily

Wednesday, January 23, 1980 (He'l) Luksa. He was confirmed, mar and lived most of his adult life in the Cook's Point community.

Before his illness, he was an active member of the Cook's Point Brethren Church, serving as janitor, youth sponsor and usher. Lately his health prevented him from active participation but he was faithful in his attendance.

Having no children of his own, "Mr. Rudy", as he was called, was looked upon like a father by the children he became acquainted with. He loved having them in his home and entertaining them. He enjoyed "entertaining" adults as well. Giving to others brought joy to him.

Luksa is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Ella Drgac) Luksa, two sisters, Fannie Drgac of Cook's Point and Emily Pannen of Victoria. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters--Albina Hovorak, Olga Jez, Lottie Odstrcil, and Vlasta and Ella Luksa. Three brothers also preceded him, Willie, Johnnie and Louis (killed in World War II).

Serving as pallbearers were Maitland Beseda of Austin, Ronnie Albright, James Chaloupka, Louis Loehr, Charlie Orsak and John J. Toupal.

Honorary pallbearers were four Godsons, J.D. WILLIAM RIPPLE who passed away December 15, following a lengthy illness. He had attained the age of 80 years, 9 months and 3 days.

He was born March 12, 1899, at Dime Box, the son of the late Henry C. Ripple and Mary Michunek Ripple.

Mr. Ripple had lived all his life in Burleson and Lee County. He was a retired. grocery merchant and farmer in the San Antonio Prairie Community. He was a member of the Dime Box Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge, Caldwell.

19 He was married to Lydia Hejtmancik, October 16, 1922, in Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Lydia Ripple of Route 1, Caldwell; two sons, William Clinton Ripple of Gulfport, Mississippi and Larry Lee Ripple of Claude, Texas; four daughters, Mrs. Ray (Jean) Valigura, Mrs. Earlyn Brinkman and Mrs. Junell (Joyce) Brinkman, all of Caldwell and Mrs. Marvin (Loretta) Laffere of Deanville; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren; one brother, Ed Ripple of Caldwell and a half-brother, Henry Ripple of Bellville; and two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Spitzenburger of Dime Box and Mrs. Annie Kamas of Nelsonville.

Also preceding him in death were one brother and two half brothers.

Brother Tomasek was born in Milan County and was a farmer and'grocer in the Cyclone area. He lived in Temple the past 11 years and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Sister Ella Schmidt was born October 25th, 1890 at Welcome, the daughter of the late Ernest and Emilie Platte.

On December 5th, 1912, she was married to Henry Schmidt.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Wittner and Mrs. Emily Shupak of Industry; three sons, Erwin Schmidt of Bleiblerville and Henry and Monroe Schmidt of Industy; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Kuehn of Bellville and Mrs. Elsie Kuehn of Industry; three brothers, Richard and Wilson Platte of Industry and Harry Platte of Houston; 15 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.

JOE KRIVANEK. Brother Krivanek, age 66, of 2924 N.W. 28th St., in Fort Worth, died Monday, December 31, 1979, in a hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Fort Worth and was a retired butcher for Swift and Co. He was a Baptist, a member of Tarrant Masonic Lodge 942, and Worth Commandery 19, Fort Worth Scottish Rite 32nd degree and a member of the Moslah Temple. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of SPJST Lodge 92 for 20 years and financial secretary of same for many years.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 3 at Shannon's North Memorial Chapel at 3:30 p.m., officiated by Rev. Hugh Adkisson. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Clara Inez; one

As a member I received the report "An Analysis of SALT II" for 1979 and I found out on page No. 13 that SLOVAK WORLD CONGRESS and SLOVAK AMERICAN REPUBLICAN FEDERATION are members of that organization. Makes me have a good feeling and it is high time that Slovaks are represented by Slovak organizations, and for the Slovak nation speaks Slovak representatives in the United States organization or in the free world; and should be that way everywhere.

Recently our member VIKTOR NESNADNY was appointed by American Security Council, Washington, D.C. to serve in the Cleveland area as a member on National Advisory Board and participate in 1979 National Security' Issues Pull, and City Council of Cleveland, Ohio, congratulated him with issued resolution.

THE CZECHOSLOVAK FOREIGN INSTITUTE The Czechoslovak Foreign Institute in Prague is a voluntary social organization the aim of which is to assist the persons of Czech or Slovak origin living abroad in making contacts with their homeland, to support the development of mutual friendly relations, to contribute to the strengthening of national • consciousness and to maintain the national traditions and customs.

In its concrete activity the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute has set forth, in particular, the following goals: - to support the efforts for teaching the Czech and Slovak languages, - to give methodical consultations to lecturers, instructors, advisors and heads of folklore and other ensembles, - to arrange for special advise to groups of philatelists, gardeners, photoamateurs, etc., including special handbooks, technical description and assistance in organizing competitions, etc., - to enable contacts for artists of various branches of arts with partners in Czechoslovakia.

The contributions from abroad will be used for the construction of a recreation centre for compatriots.

KUBIAK'S REPORT Federal officials recently made two decisions which have significant impact on our economy and will directly effect many people in our district.

The President announced a partial embargo on grain sales to the Russians and Congress suspended the mortgage rate ceilings in all states for 90 days.

I would like to discuss both decisions and how they will effect District 36.

Grain Embargo: President Carter halted the sale of 17 million metric tons of grain in retaliation to the Soviet military invasion of Afghanistan. In order to protect American agriculture, the federal government will allocate $2.25 billion to buy this grain from US exporting companies.

The grain will be placed in domestic surplus storage and a large amount will be put into rapid gasohol production.

The President's action will have both good and bad effects on American agriculture and urban consumers.

FIRST, THE BAD EFFECTS Farmers are worried, and rightly so, that the sudden abundance of grain will drive prices down and devastate an already troubled agriculture economy.

Farm leaders have been working with the administration to help accomplish Carter's intentions.

As most of you know, agriculture is an economic pillar in our district. It is most vital that our grain markets are protected.

THE GOOD NEWS If the economic pitfalls can be avoided, and they must, then the embargo may well prove to be a blessing in disguise for farmers because national efforts are being directed to rapid gasohol production.

Although urban consumers will benefit from plentiful supplies of gasohol, the real winners will be the farmers.

If our goals are accomplished, within three years farmers will have more meaningful markets at home to replace foreign markets which often do not bring much profit. In short, gasohol production has the potential to utilize all the grain we can grow, and farmers will not suffer from overproduction.

One problem is the lack of large gasohol plants in the nation. Since these large plants take two to three years to build, we may begin to quickly build many smaller plants all across the nation.

If that happens, Texas will certainly build its share of alcohol plants, and you may rest assured that District 36 will be among the leaders. Several on-the-farm plants are being planned in Falls, Milani and Williamson counties, as well as the large plant intended in Hutto.

Rate Ceiling Suspension: I have received numerous inquiries from persons wanting to know how the rate suspension will effect them.

Two weeks ago Congress acted to remove state interest ceilings on home loans for 90 diys, thereby creating a temporary free market situation. The intent is to free loan money which had become extremely tight.

The result has been a climb in the rates to around thirteen and one-half percent.

We can only wait and see if the rates will continue to climb or if they will stabilize.

The Texas Constitution requires the Legislature to set an interest ceiling, and last spring after much debate, the Legislature raised it from ten percent to 12 percent.

I am opposed to high interest rates and voted accordingly. I believe Congress acted because it wanted to test a free market situation to see where the rate would float.

At the end of 90 days, all state ceilings will go back into effect, which means Texas will again operate under its 12 percent cap.

However, the Texas cap is only effective for another year, and the Legislature must act next session to decide whether to keep, raise or lower the present rate.

BANKERS TO HEAR ABOUT GOVERNMENT IN AGRICULTURE A discussion of "Governmental Legislation and Its Effects on Texas Agriculture" by Congressman E. "Kika" de la Garza, vice chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, will be one of the highlights of the 28th Texas Farm and Ranch Credit Conference for Commercial Bankers.

The conference will be Feb. 11 and 12 at Rudder Center on the Texas A and M University campus, announces Dr. Richard Trimble, economist with Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A and M University System.

A discussion on "Bank Profitability" should be of special interest to Texas hankers attending the conference, adds Trimble. Randy Parrish of the Howard J. Blender Co. will discuss various aspects of bank performance and how banks can deal with problems resulting from the current economic situation.

Other items to be discussed will include "Taxation of Open-Space Land,"

"General Economic Outlook for 1980 and Beyond," and "New Developments in Financing Texas Agriculture."

The conference will also include sessions on loans for crops and machinery, cow-calf operations, feedlots and dairies.

Conference planning is handled by the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Section of the Texas Banker's Association, which sponsors the event along with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station.

In severe weather, a heat-source cut-off could threaten your personal safety and comfort, and it could cause water lines in the home to freeze, explains Sue Young.

Supplies you'll need for setting up a stove include stove pipe, thimble, collar, adjustable elbow, damper and stove board.

STOVE IN FIREPLACE If you decide to set up a stove in your fireplace, follow these steps: Measure the fireplace, and cut a sheet of metal or asbestos board to close the opening.

Set the stove on a fireproof stove board at least one stove-pipe length (24) inches away from the face of the fireplace.

Install a damper in one section of the pipe.

Connect pipes to the stove and the elbow.

Adjust them in their final position -- to determine the proper location for the hole you'll need to cut in the sheet metal or asbestos board used to close the fireplace opening.

Slide the collar onto the pipe, and insert the pipe into the hole in the closing board.

Then fit the collar snugly against the board.

CAUTION: Burn coal ONLY in a cast iron stove with a grate designed specifically for coal.
