FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK To all of our young ladies! In this issue and in future issues we print the rules for our "Miss SPJST" contest to be held during the SPJST convention in San Antonio in June. Please read the rules and conditions carefully, including requirements and subject matter. Remember, somebody will win, however, nobody is the loser! just the experience of entering, trying and competing is an education of a certain type by itself! This editor and, we are sure, all of our members hope many of you competent, beautiful, talented and fine young ladies will consider this chance and enter; you will not regret the experience, rest assured!

Our SPJST district meetings for the Spring of 1980 are listed in the Bulletin Board; four districts have set their dates for March 9, 16, 23 and April 20, Districts I, III, and IV need to do so as soon as possible. Please do so and send the dates in; there will be quite a bit of business, to be brought up at these district meetings, especially this year, because it is our quadrennial convention year. It is hoped that meetings of districts can be arranged so, as not to conflict with other districts' dates. With gasoline selling at 99.9 cents a gallon, at the present time, in this area of Texas, we wonder how the attendance at these meetings will be.

"QUOTES" FOREVER is a long time, but not as long as it was yesterday. —Dennis H'orgnles YOU'VE GOT TO LOVE what's lovable and hate what's hateable. It takes brains to see the difference. —Robert Frost PROGRESS is not created by contented people. Frank Tyger MOST SMILES are started by another smile. —Good Reading I DON'T WANT TO ACHIEVE immortality through my work. I want to achieve immortality through not dying. —Woody Allen WHEN I don't have anything to worry about, I begin to worry about that. —Walter Kelly "ADVICE is best heeded when most needed." English Proverb Most of us drive; here are some things most of our members and readers will surely be interested in knowing. Some ways to lower car insurance costs: • Take a driver education course. It can earn you up to a 10% discount. • Drive as little as possible. O.K., that did sound silly, but some insurance companies offer discounts if you drive less than 7500 miles a year, or if you

don't drive to work and back. (Carpool commuting saves gas, too.) • Don't smoke or drink. The reason for reduced rates for non-drinkers is obvious, but some companies think smoking distracts drivers. • Keep a good driving record. • Avoid expensive extra equipment such as stereos, tape decks, CB radios, mag wheels, special tires and fancy paint jobs that make your car a target for thieves. If you must have them, then add anti-theft devices which may earn you a discount from some companies. • Realize that high-performance autos, sports cars, or luxury vehicles can cost 20% to 50% more to insure. *** What's worse than three shots of whiskey for breakfast? A sleeping pill the night before, at least if you drive to work. Recent studies show that regular use of sleeping pills can be extremely hazardous to drivers. For instance‘ Dalmane, America's most frequently prescribed sleeping medication, builds up in the bloodstream steadily day by day — but so subtly that the user may not realize it is eroding his coordination. In one experiment volunteers who took Dalmane seven nights consecutively performed worse in a coordination test. on the eighth morning than those who drank three ounces of whiskey just before testing! ***
