President's Annual New Year's Message and Report Dear Members: Portions of this message and report will almost certainly be included in the president's pre-convention report that will appear in the Vestnik just prior to the convention, so it is suggested that the members, especially delegates, retain this copy for future reference. It has been traditional that the president bring you this report at this time each year, in addition to other reports that he renders periodically to the membership in the Vestnik. INSURANCE AND MEMBERSHIP GROWTH. Through December 20th, a total of 2,931 appliCations were received for a total of $19,702,500 in insurance. This is a decrease in applications from last year's total at this time, but an Increase over the $18,287,465 in insurance last year at this time. This points up one important fact, as was the case last year: Our sales people are soliciting larger policies and this is good and a big plus for the insured. However - and note this well - you have noticed that Vice President Gebala has changed his monthly reports in the Vestnik for some time now to also include the amount of insurance actually issued, or placed on the books. ($16,383,000 as of 20 Dec. '79). This gives a truer picture of the gains, rather than giving just the amount of applications received. What is received (applied for) and what is issued and
placed on the books are two different things. The members thus have a more accurate and truer picture of what our gains in insurance actually are. By the time I bring you the report on our net gains for 1979, both of these figures should be even larger. This compares favorably to previous records in our Society, and if any of our records are to be broken, I don't mind if we are the ones to break them. All the districts met and exceeded their quotas and we are grateful to everyone involved in any way in insurance sales, namely, the vice president's office and staff, local producing lodge sales representatives, and last but not least, the membership at large who contributed to these gains by their recommendations of prospective
members. It has truly been a team effort and we are enormously proud of all of you. (Net figures in insurance gain and members will be reported to you the early part of March 1980.) Managing the affairs of the SPJST is big business and the responsibilities are keenly felt. This is 1979 -- a far cry from what and how we were doing things 30-40 years ago. Although this was done in this report in January 1979 I feel that the information bears repeating so that our members' minds are refreshed as to the various duties and responsibilities here in the Home Office. INSURANCE DEPARTMENT. These gains in insurance-membership do not stop with the mere acquisition of new business. Each application must be processed ..before the actual issuance of the policy; Medicals and Life Reports must be obtained, often with a tremendous amount of correspondence relating thereto with physicians, the proposed insured, the sales representative involved, et al; the beneficiary book posted; commissions must be posted and paid; doctors paid for medical services rendered; general servicing of policies on an on-going basis, to include issuance of DI, Payor, PW Supplements; changes of names, changes of beneficiaries, issuing duplicate policies, etc., etc. There are many other matters taken care of relating to servicing of contracts, rates,
