NEVVSBRIEFS Clyde Sijansky, 45, of Penelope, died Thursday, December 20th at the Hubbard Hospital. Graveside services were held Saturday, December 22nd at 10 a.m. at the National Cemetery in Penelope, with Editor Rudy J. Sefcik officiating, under the auspices of the SPJST. Brother Sijansky was a member of the Penelope Lodge No. 167.

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE SPJST HISTORY: An Update Dear Members: In this report I am going to give the status of the local lodge histories as of 1 December 1979. In previous reports I had indicated that I was shooting for the target date of 1 January 1980 for receiving and completing the histories of the local lodges, but it seems that unless these come in during the month of December that that will not be possible.

REPORTS DISTRICT VI SALES REPRESENTATIVE'S REPORT FOR OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER SALES Total sales through November for our district are $1,177,000 sold to 137 members. Thanks to all hard-working' sales representatives for such good sales work.

Top sales representative in the month of October was Joe Hadash of Lodge No. 30 Taiton, having sold $25,000 in insurance to one member. In the month of November top sales representative was Cynthia Kubicek of East Bernard Lodge No. 28 with $30,000 in insurance sold to one member. Congratulations to both of you. For Sister Kubicek, this is exceptionally good work since she became a sales representative only last September.

LODGE NO. 180, BURLESON

The December 6th meeting started at 7:30 p.m. with Rick Smajstrla leading the members in the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

President Barabas then, called for a moment of silent tribute to our sick and most of all for W.E. (Mac) Harrison who passed away last month. Lodge 180 extends its heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Norma, who is a good friend of many of us here in Burleson. May he rest in eternal peace.

Two special guests were recognized

by President Barabas. They were District III Director Sid Pokladnik and District III Youth Counselor Ed Kamas.

Ed came to make a request that his year's Youth Achievement Day be held at Lodge No. 180 in Burleson. It was voted and approved that it be held here on Sunday, June 29th. More will be said about this, next year in the Vestnik.

Sister Sondra Barabas read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved as read. Reports from other officers were given and approved.

Wednesday, December 26, 1979 Sunshine Committee Kitty Rippin reported she sent cards to the following; Sympathy cards sent to Norman Harrison, also flowers; get well cards were sent to Bobby Bransom, Clara McDaniels, Roy Hampton. Sympathy card was sent to the family of Eugene Holacka on the death of his father-in-law.

Dear Members: The only place that success comes before work is in the dictionary. This is true of building a house, selling insurance or inereasin one's knowledge of the local lodge: for it is at the lodge meeting that one learns more about their lodge's business and their fellow members.

After hearing the officer's reports, it was obvious that our lodge has progressed favorably in the last decade, inspite of the hard times. There is so much one could explain, but only those

It can be stated that the wheel of all fraternal societies has many spokes, and such spokes include the spoke of family protection and the spoke of fraternal activity; these, in turn are attached to the hub of responsibility and accountability. Moreover, the wheel must keep moving for greater results, and we hope to count on all SPJST members to help pave the way for a smoother and brighter future.

Since our last quarterly meeting, we lost several members, namely: Brother Ben A. Kudelka, Brother Charles J. Smaistrla, Brother Frank Matus, and Sister Frances Vanzura. We extend our sincere sympathy to each family and may their loved ones rest in peace.

Following the election of delegates, Brother Ted Kocian recommended that the lodge purchase ten to twelve electric roasters for the use of the lodge's future undertakings. After a discussion on this topic, it was passed that the lodge purchase the equipment.

It was announced that Brother Joe Dujka, Sr., one of our sales representatives, became a grandfather of a baby girl born to Joe and Doris Dujka of Waco, and Lodge No. 54 extends its congratulations.

Brother Zahirniak thanked all the attending members who participated and contributed so much to the 75th Anniversary, and extended Season's Greetings to everyone.

Afterwards, Sister Janise Kaluza won the door prize.

Following the adjournment of the meeting at 4:05 p.m., Santa Claus came to fill the youngsters with hope and passed out bags of fruit and sweets, and the meeting ended with a Christmas dinner for all.

Treasurer Henry Breitkreutz, Jr. gave his report.

Youth Leader Sister Rosemarie Banik reported their cake walk was a big success again. Seems like they couldn't find a night to have a Christmas party so they just exchanged gifts and will have a party some time later. Sister Rosemarie then asked all members who had birthdays in December to come forward. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Sondra Dieterich, Gloria Pavelka, Angela Pechacek, Terry Hand, Brothers Charlie Pavelka, Frank Mach, Jr. and Timmy and Tommy Pavelka.

Committee reports were made by Ruby Pavelka, kitchen; Eugene Pavelka, entertainment; and Johnny Stuchley, refreshments. They thanked everyone who helped them.

The Sunshine Committee reported that Abe Coker is seriously ill in Temple Veterans' Hospital. Brother H.E. Farek had eye surgery. We hope both of you are feeling better by now.

The youth club presented a beautiful Christmas program which was enjoyed by everyone. Thanks, youth club and youth leader.

The senior members were honored with a fruit basket. There were thirty-five senior members present.

After the meeting a delicious ham dinner was served.

Brother Woodrow and Sister Gladys Marek were nominated for the Brother and Sister award this year and after a vote by the Board of Trustees, were the recipients of this plaque. For years they have been dedicated to lodge work: they always served as kitchen chairmen each year; they worked at the annual picnics during the preparation and the cleanup, afterwards; anytime a' work day is planned they are present.

Planning and Improvement Committees for several years now and even during the remodeling in 1975. At the present time, he is an auditor and on the Maintenance Committee; was a trustee for several years and also chairman of the Board for two years and again elected for a three-year term.

Sister Marek has served on committees for decorating on several occasions, and

10 on the Nominating Committee this year.

By the above-mentioned activities, you can see they are very dedicated lodge members, therefore, deserving of the award.

Dear Members and Friends: We had the Country Combinations providing our music Saturday night. I was unable to be there but the people I talked to said they really enjoyed themselves. They also mentioned that the music was really good.

The drawing for the television was scheduled for Saturday night, December 22nd. Somebody will have a real nice Christmas present this year The money collected from the tickets will be donated to the mother lodge for the installation of a new dance floor.

I want to remind everyone that we will have the Night-time Friends providing our music on New Year's Eve. We hope everyone comes and brings a guest to enjoy the fun and to see the old year out and the new year in.

I also want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years. I hope this next year is more prosperous and much better for everyone.

The youth will all be out for Christmas vacation, so please be careful and watch out for them on the roads and highways.

Our children's Christmas party at the lodge was held December 20th at 7 p.m.

LODGE NO. 49, ROWENA Dear Members and Friends, Sunday, December 2, we had our Christmas at the SPJST Hall. For lunch we had ham and turkey with all the trimmings and what a variety of foods and sweets! At 2 p.m. we held our meeting and heard the yearly reports, which were approved by all present.

We held the election of officers for the coming year. All officers were re-elected: Elizebeth Walthers president; Arthur Lisso - vice-president; Pauline Shiller-secretary and Emil Kvasnicka-financial secretary-treasurer.

The following were elected delegates to the convention; Emil Havlak and Pauline Shiller. Emil Kvasnicka and Minnie Pavlicek alternates. We also had our District IV Director Stanley Broz and wife, Martha, with us all day. They come often and we enjoy having them; come to the game night.

After the meeting, we had a social hour and left-over supper. We had an enjoyable day.

December 28th we will have our game night again. We will have refreshments as before and games start at 6 o'clock.

Dear Members and Friends: Our monthly meeting for December was held Wednesday night, December 12th at 8 p.m. Thirty-four members attended the meeting.

This was an important meeting because the new officers were installed in an impressive ceremony by President Van Fowler.

The meeting was called to order by our president, Brother Van Fowler.

Sister Wilma Nesuda read the minutes of the last meeting and Christmas cards and thank you notes received by the lodge.

The members voted to establish a Memorial Fund of money sent in memory of Brother Frank B. Vrla. The members also voted on a motion by Sister Wilma Nesuda to establish a fund to be used for repair of the portico and any other repair that needs to be done on the lodge building.

Sister Judy Kudrna, youth club leader, gave her report that the youth club has done well and has accomplished a lot this year. She invited everyone to register for two'door prizes and to stay for punch, pastries, cheese balls and crackers after the meeting.

Sisters Elizabeth Moucka and Dorothy Kudrna won the door prizes.

State Field Manager Gene McBride and Brother Johnie Hrabina presented plaques of appreciation for their many hours of work for the good of the lodge to: Sister Wilma and Brother Alvin Nesuda, recording secretary; Brother Van Fowler, president; Sister Emma Trojacek, secretary; Brother Joe Trojacek, financial secretary; and Brother Martin Zapletal, vice president.

Sergeant-at-Arms Al Gurecky's resignation was accepted with regret because he has faithfully performed his duties during the time he has held the position. The members voted and approved to let the Nominating Committee nominate a new sergeant-atarms and flag bearer.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe A. Martinek were elected Mr. and Mrs. SPJST for 1979.

Brother Joe Martinek accepted the plaques.

Three new members were accepted.

Brother Larry Trojacek's application for sales representative was approved.

Brother Johnny I. Krajca made a motion which was approved to have a covered dish supper to start at 6 p.m. before the next meeting which will be held January 9, 1980 at 8 p.m., so come and bring a covered dish and welcome the new officers and attend the meeting.

I hope you got your tickets for the big New Year's Eve dance; the music will be by the great Mikula Band of Ennis.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON CHORAL CLUB Dear Readers: The Seaton Choral Club has had a round of holiday activities that started Tuesday, December 11th when we performed at the Southland Villa Nursing Center in Temple. The following members were present for this occasion: President Emily Stuteville, Annie Jakubec (our talented leader), Albina Mikeska, Marie Zvolanek, Stazie Horelica, Matilda and Otto Hanus, our accordionist Henry and Helen Janacek, Martha Klusacek, Agnes Schiller, Eleonora and Frank Spanhel, Della Psencik, Anne Krcha, Dorothy Pechal, Clarence Sodek, Ruby Bolton, Georgia Sodek, Vallie and Leon Zavodny, Elsie and Mathew Cabla, Laverne and Johnny Vanicek, Linda and Dan Wilde, Adeline and Willie Kohutek, Dorothy Morris and Viola Chervenka. We sang a full hour of both

Czech and English songs, (everyday, as well as Christmas songs) to a very appreciative audience. We are thankful that we were able to bring those fine people there something to cheer them up.

After the singing was over, we had a short business meeting on the patio discussing the invitation from Linden Lodge No. 66 to sing at their Christmas party and we decided to accept this invitation to sing at their Christmas party Saturday, December 15th. All of us went home with a happy heart that we have performed for those fine people at the Southland Villa Nursing Center.

Linden Hall was beautifully decorated and served a great Christmas meal that was really enjoyed by everyone. We were first on the program and we hope we brought all of you some joy and sincere THANKS for being invited. We were followed by the WEST BESEDA group which gave a performance that would give great credit to groups that have performed for years while they have only organized in the early part of this year and performed like old veterans.

Fellow singers: those of you who did not attend really missed an enjoyable evening and the Choral Club cooks are the world's finest, the food that was brought was out of this world. I stepped on the scale this morning and found I had gained five pounds. There were dishes and dishes full of goodies and how can you resist such appetizing foods?

Floyd and Emily are great hosts and for all of us, who attended, we say "THANK YOU" with capital letters and may you have the GREATEST CHRISTMAS EVER.

END OF THE YEAR NEWS FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON This is my last report for 1979 and my next letter will come out in 1980. Where did the days, weeks and months of 1979 go? They passed so rapidly with personal and lodge activities and there was not time to linger on frivolous thoughts, therefore, everything was taken in a regular stride. Here are last few lines to say goodbye to 1979. All in all, it was a good year, with the ups and downs we all survived with flying colors

at 88. My next report will open the door on a new, and, we hopefully think, on a healthy and prosperous 1980. Our Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox re-elected for the 14th time has many special dances in store for our dance-loving guests. The first big dance attraction with Guy Lombardo orchestra will take place Friday, February 291h and Saturday, March 1st, 1980.

Regular Saturday dance, December 15th, with music by Donnie Wavr4 was enjoyed by a fair attendance. The Hosting Committee, as usual, were all

We appreciate the assistance of the nice couple of Lodge No. 65, Brother Jerry and Sister Delores Prochazka, Jerry was in charge of the box office while Delores, with Orville and Juanita Simon, took care of admitting the guests.

Friday night the lodge was humming with activity; in the Youth Room boxes of candy, oranges and apples supplied, by the lodge, were placed in plastic bags by the youth and some parents to be ready for the Youth Christmas party Monday, December 17th. Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg was busy like a bee to make all the purchases and arranging and dividing the fruit. In the Red Room another group of Choral Club members were filling 58 plastic bags with different items and were tying them with red ribbons to the previously bags filled by the Youth Club. The Christmas bags were taken, by the Choral Club to the S.P.J.S.T No. 2 Needville Rest Home, because this was our annual holiday visit to the home to entertain the home guests with English and Czech Christmas carols and some Czech folk songs to the delight of the guests humming familiar songs while we sang. These 58 bags were donated by the 34 Choral Club members and a generous donation of $10 was given by Sister L.H. Jaimes; also Brother Emily (Sly) Slanina donated packaged peppermint candy with the help of Annie Green, to be given to the guests.

Emil is a member of longstanding, and does things that a lot of us don't know about. In other words he doesn't toot his own horn and does things behind the scene. Emil, the guests at the home enjoyed your kindness. Sister Carlene Carlock donated the cosmetics, Brother Director Louis Hanus, in company of Brother Joe (Uncle) Skrabanek donated 50 lbs. of rice to the home raised on his farm, this amount will serve several meals at the home. To all these donors: many thanks.

We arrived at Needville Rest Home at 1:30 p.m. with the house guests in the lobby and the dining area waiting for us. With lively greetings to all, we enjoyed seeing our Lodge No. 88 members so happy. Sister Ida Hanka always cheerful and full of laughter is a very contented guest. The lovely couple, Brother and Sister F. Faltesek also love the place and are very satisfied. Brother Hejda, in a wheelchair, now resides in the home for several years. Sister Anna Kelnar lately made her home there and we hope she will be happy. My friend, Louise Janca at the home now for several years and

Wednesday, December 26, 1979 now in a wheelchair, is a delightful and cheerful person. Another friend, Brother John Kolaja, always in a pleasant and cheerful mood, this year showed sadness in memory of his dear wife, Emily, and tears rolled down his cheeks when we were singing.

After the program, as every year, we were surprised with a richly-loaded buffet of delicious food. The home furnished the sandwiches, chips, coffee and punch. Vlasta Nowotny, spouse of our S.P. J. S.T. Rest Homes Director, Herbert Nowotny, she baked the cookies and fruitcake, Mathilda Slacalek baked the kolaches and poppy seed roll, and the delicious apple strudels were baked by Sisters Horelica, Lillie Tejkl and Marie Straznicky; everything was just delicious and nobody needed any prompting; everything was just friendly. The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Director Harvey Marx with wife, Thelma. made gracious hosts. Thanks for the great treat. With happy thoughts and goodbyes we boarded the comfortable van of the Hegwoods; Sister Helen Hegwood, the canary of our Choral Club, drove ten of us safely to Needville and back to Houston.

At the Saturday dance, two birthday celebrants had a blast around Tables 7 and 8. Brother Arnold Spencer, active in the Choral Club and the Hlahol Dramatic Club and also is the auditor, was celebrating 39? (maybe a little more who knows and who cares), but he sure can act. Stephanie Schulte, at Table 7 also with many best wishes from her surrounding friends was happy to celebrate her birthday. Both tables were loaded with food and each had a decorated birthday cake. Happy birthday to both.

Sister Ledi Kadera, a Birthday Club sister, was confined in Heights Hospital for a whole week to undergo operation on both feet; she is at home now but still with some pain, which will take a while to subside. Ledi, take care and get well by next Birthday Club meeting.

Brother Jerry J. Baletka, age 80, and member of Lodge Stefanik No. 142 passed away December 10, 1979 and was laid to rest Saturday, December 14th, 1979. Brother Baletka was the father of our Brother Richard Baletka.

We extend sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

The Blue Room Christmas Party, Sunday, December 16th, was very successful and enjoyed by all present.

LADIES' CIRCLE, LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH

It was a dreary, cloudy and cold morning when the Ladies' Circle met Thursday, December 13, but, inside the National Hall, warm sunshine of friendship and Christmas decorations prevailed to proclaim the Holy Season.

President Anne Polk called the meeting to order and greeted all members and visitors: Catherine Smith, Albina Martin and Ella Mae Faraizel.

Approximately 60 people were present to enjoy a delicious dinner of ham and other delectable goodies.

Secretary's and treasurer's reports were read and approved. Thank you cards were acknowledged from the George Korteff family, Mary Juran family, Sister Christine Zich, and from our regular visitors, Mary and Bennie Pavey. A $10 doantion will be sent to the S. P.J. S. T. No. 1 Rest Home in Taylor since it is the final home for so many Czechs of Texas.

New officers elected to serve in 1980 are: Julia Dueser, president; Bessie Prochaska, vice-president; Clara Marchioni, secretary; Aurora Maldino, treasurer; Lillie McMillen-Sunshine Committee; and Mary Palachek, reporter. All were elected by acclamation. President Polk stated this was an excellent slate of officers, and all members wish them much success and satisfaction in serving us during the coming year. Installation of officers in February will be conducted by Sister Florence Greer and if she is unable to be present, the installation will be conducted by Sister Lydia Palachek.

All members of the Circle will be asked to serve as hostesses at least one time in 1980. There will be six hostesses, including bne who will donate money, to serve the meals when

the service of hostesses is required.

Because of unpredictable weather in January, no meeting will be held that month. All members are asked to bring a covered-dish to the February meeting.

If weather conditions will not permit travel to the National Hall in February, that meeting will also be cancelled. In that event, the covered-dish dinner will be served at the March meeting.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Elizabeth Gregory and Marie Tesar. Sister Bessie Prochaska reOted a beautiful poem before saying the blessing, after which the Circle adjourned for the Christmas dinner.

At our Christmas dinner party, Sister Florence Greer introduced a novel way for members to exchange Christmas presents. All members were seated to form a large circle, holding beautifullywrapped gifts. Sister Greer, standing in the middle of the circle, read an amusing story about the Wright's Christmas Day. The story was filled with words "right" and "left". When she said the word "right", the ladies passed their package to the person sitting on the right, and if the word "left" was heard, the ladies passed their present to the person sitting on their left side. The resulting confusion of passing the gift to the right and to the left added a lot of fun and laughter to our Christmas party.

The Circle extends its heartfelt sympathy to our former member, Sister Angie Polasek on the recent death of her husband, Joe. It would be nice if she could join our Circle again. Many of our members miss her presence.

Please remember - there will be no meeting in January, but a meeting is scheduled the second Thursday of February, weather permitting. Membership dues will be accepted at the February meeting.

Interacting with your fellow gymnasts from other countries, what are the overall feelings of the competition being held outside Europe for the first time in the event's history?

I really haven't talked to many of the athletes about it but in the past, the other athletes really enjoyed competition in our country. I think it's going to be a good competition for all of us.

We'll do a top job in running it, our federation is top class and we'll really have a good meet.

Why do you think gymnastics has become such a popular sport?

KURT I think it's the success factor involved here. We've done well internationally and people like winners and we've had exposure on television.

What do you see in the future for gymnastics in the United States and in the school system?

For the first time in a long time, we've got a feeder program that's feeding into our senior program. Like Jim Hartung getting a lot of experience in competitions at a young age. They are really helping us. This is something we haven't had in the past. It's something the Soviets have and the Japanese have and it's just a grass roots program now.

At what age does a male gymnast reach his peak?

I think it depends on the gymnast.

The top Japanese gymnast is 32 now and he's still doing really well. I again think it depends on the person.

At what age do you think a young man should begin serious concentration on the sport if he plans to compete in the Olympics someday?

They're starting it all around seven or eight years old now and by about 12, they are intensely into gymnastics. We have a couple junior high guys now 12 and 13 who are much better than I was when I was a senior in high school.

We're building this program. We have a national junior coach now. A young person should start out with the basics and work on flexibility and strength and gradually move into the sport.

In touring with the U.S. team, what was one of your most impressive trips?

I've been everywhere and they've all been impressive to me. The most memorable was the World Championships when I won the medal.

How much time do you spend on tour with the team during the year?

One international competition a week

17 out of every month. It's good for me and the sport.

Do you think you'll do much of it once this is all over with?

I'll stick with it.

How much time do you spend practicing on a daily basis?

Anywhere from five to seven hours. I practice at Arizona State University. I have suffered many injuries. I fractured my neck and back but I was fortunate they were stress fractures and not breaks.

How does the exposure you've gotten affect you and do you like this exposure?

I enjoy it. I think it's great. I've met alot of people and it has really promoted the sport. I think we've needed the exposure for a long time. I think it is super.

At the age of 23, what are your immediate plans following the Olympics?

Well, I don't know. I'm going to see how it goes. I plan on sticking around being actively involved in gymnastics but not necessarily competing.

[This excerpt pertains to the Sokols—Editor.1 Text by Gregory Mills December was the month for gymnastics in Ft. Worth with the XXth World Gymnastic Competition but at Fort Worth's Sokol Club at the Eagle Mountain Athletic Center on Boat Club Road, gymnastics is a year, round event.

Family participation is the foundation of Sokol and at the base of Fort Worth's foundation is the Milan family. Joe Milan founded the Fort Worth affiliate in 1913 and it is now about to be handed down to its third generation.

Sokol, meaning falcon, and its philosophy date back to Prague, Czechoslovakia, 1862. The regimented training identified with Sokol spread throughout Eastern Europe. Joe Milan joined the club in Yugoslavia and he carried its tradition through immigration into the United States and later to Fort Worth, Texas.

Sokol is known as a Czechoslovak tradition. "There was a time if you were Czech, you were in Sokol," says Joe's son, Jerry, director of the Fort Worth center today.

The ethnic comradeship prevailed in the United States and Texas during the early 1900's when Sokol centers were strong in such towns as Schulenberg, Fayetteville, LaGrange, and Dime Box. These early founders organized the

Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, a private, fraternal insurance fund covering all Sokol members and today it is housed in Temple, Texas.

After World War I, rural populations were diluted and Sokols began to concentrate in cities, such as Fort Worth. Although they were originally a community center for the Czechoslovakians, they began to evolve into centers for anyone who was willing to participate in the organization.

"It's a way of life," said Jerry.

"We're not interested in competition as much as we're interested in putting a kid through the Sokol program. This is a physical education program and gymnastics is the main aspect of it.

"We've always worked with the community to try to make it a strong organization," he said.

Entertainment at the local center, originally housed on Houston Street, has always been primarily athletics/ gymnastics during the week. But on weekends, dancing shoes have been known to take over. Joe Milan's "Oompah Band" regularly delighted featherfooted crowds with the polka. It wasn't unusual for these weekend activities to make enough money to help pay the bills and provide expenses for more gymnastic equipment.

"I remembers that if there wasn't money to pay the lights and water bills, mother and daddy would pay for it themselves," says Rosie Steinman, a second generation Milan with nine children of her own.

"Ive been in Sokol since before I was even born! That's just how we did things."

Sokol moved from its Houston Street facility to Northwest 28th Street where polka was king to large North Side crowds. Then, as now, the main labor force for these events were students of the center. However, the beat at the Boat Club Road facility now rocks to a disco duck, preferable over the polka of yesteryear, but, the entire effort was, and still is, all volunteer.

Gymnastics has been the focal point of Jerry's life since he entered Fort Worth's original Sokol gym which later led to his earning a berth on the University of Texas' gymnastics team.

He remained a national competitor after college graduation and was an instructor certified in the Sokol system.

It was at an instructor's school in St. Louis that he met his wife, Henriette, better known as Hank. He then became active in state high school gymnastics association. The United States' Olympic Games Committee for gymnastics enlisted him for Olympiads in 1966, 1972 and 1976. Today, he is coach at

18 Euless Trinity High School. His team has always ranked fifth or better in the state competition. Brother Emil coaches a rival team at Hurst's L.D. Bell High School producing the last three straight Texas high school championship teams.

The Fort Worth Sokol Club helped in the XXth World Gymnastics Championships by moving floor equipment, but Jerry and Hank had an even deeper personal commitment to the competion through sons Rome and Talon. Both were working in the Championships.

Rome, a member of the gymnastics team at the University of Texas at Austin, took the semester off to devote to the Championships. He was what is called a "leader" to the Russian team during their stay in Fort Worth since he is fluent in the Russian language. He will also be attending the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

Like December, 1979 is an important date in gymnastics' history to the International Gymnastics Federation which is sponsoring the XXth World Gymnastics Competition, 1981 will be an important year for Sokol.

Sokol holds regional and national competition which are called slets (which means gathering of the falcons).

Following suit of the growing popularity of the gymnastic sport, the 1981 United States slet will be held in Fort Worth and is an historic event for the movement that has taken on an American flavor in the last 30 years.

The 1981 quadrennial marks the first time in 15 such competitions that it has been held outside of Chicago's Soldier Field. In addition to gymnastics, track and field are also part of the all-around competition.

Although international slets have been banned in Czechoslovakia since 1948 when Sokol was nationalized under the elected Country's government, early documentation from the worldwide slets drew as many as 34,000 athletes to the huge Prague stadium.

Jerry is quick to point out that "Sokol is not an Olympic-type training facility.

It is an amazing organization in itself."

But, "if we get somebody who is proficient in one area, we encourage them to go to a gym or a trainer where they can get the intense, individual attention that is best suited for their need," says Brad Durham, Jerry Milam's assistant director.

Sokol was represented in this year's World Championships on the U.S. team by Jim Hartung of Omaha, Nebraska. Mike Wilson of Garland, Texas, is Sokol's alternate on the U.S. team.

VtSTNflIC Durham explains his philosophy about gymnastics, "It teaches you to handle frustration. I don't see any sport that can compare to it. No matter how good an athlete is, he can't walk in a gym and do it the first time.

"Some kids try a trick for two years, then maybe it'll break for them, and practically every top kid we have is a straight 'A' student. The discipline transfers right over to school. It requires so much time in the gym that you have to learn to budget your time."

The Milan family has been helping youngsters and families learn the art of timing and physical discipline since 1913 and with the growth of the sport, so deepens the commitment of Sokol and families like Joe Milan's.

CLASS AT MEMORIAL ADULT EVENING SCHOOL IN HOUSTON

CZECH

Conversational Czech will be taught in the Adult Evening School on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. for 15 weeks, beginning January 24, 1980 at Memorial Senior High School, 935 Echo Lane, Houston, Texas 77024.

Registration will be held in the high school auditorium from 7 to 9 p.m.

January 8th, 9th and 10th. Tuition for this course will be $30 plus $5 registration fee.

This interesting course will include use of the excellent text "Czech For English-Speaking Students," some Czechoslovak history and a slide travelogue of Czechoslovakia.

Here is a good opportunity to learn the Czech language and/or improve your proficiency in the use of the language through conversation, reading and writing and to help promote your Czech heritage.

YOUTH SECTION From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 50, EL CAMPO Dear Readers: El Campo Lodge 50 Youth Club went caroling to the Hillje Rest Home December 10th and also presented them with a decorated Christmas tree that they made in craft.

For our monthly meeting, we met at the American Legion Auxiliary. The meeting was opened by youth leader, Mrs. Vlasta Bartos. We recited the pledge to the flag. Secretary Lori Henderson read the minutes, and Treasurer William Rek gave the treasurer's report and collected dues.

We then discussed old and new business topics.

We had youth visitors: Stacy Arnold, Martha Lynn Bartos, Melissa and Pamela Brandt, Jackie and Michael Marek. Adults present were: Alvin and Anna Bartos, Alfred and Josephine Brandt, Victor and Patricia Dybala, Mrs. Georgie Henderson, Mrs. Janet Marek, Mrs. Bernice Rek, Mrs. Rita Vanek and Mrs. Vlasta Bartos.

After the meeting we had a Christmas party. The youth exchanged gifts. They paid for the refreshments. We had pizza, sausage, chips, pickles, bread and sweets.

The children's Christmas party was also scheduled for December 20th at 7 p.m. The members of the youth club were urged to come and bring a guest to join in the fun and see Santa Claus.

ADOLPH B. DUSEK, 76, former city engineer for Hallettsville, who retired some time ago, was laid to rest Tuesday, December 11, 1979; he passed away unexpectedly at his home here Sunday, December 9, 1979, at 12:30 a.m. He and his wife had lived on East Second Street for many years.

His body lay in state at the Kubena Funeral Home here until Tuesday, December 11, at 8:45 a.m. when the remains were taken to the Czech Moravian Brethren '7hurch at Vsetin for 10:00 a.m. services Interment was in the Vsetin Church Cemetery.

Rev. Henry Beseda and Rev. Jesse Skrivanek officiated.

Prayer service was held at 6:30 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 10, at the Kubena Funeral Home here.

In lieu of other remembrances, the family requested friends and relatives to give to the Vsetin CMB Church and Vsetin Cemetery Association.

Mr. Dusek was a member of the Czech Moravian Brethren Church of Vsetin, and was a member and past president of the SPJST local lodge of Bila Hora. He was born at Bila Hora, in the northeast part of Lavaca County, November 8, 1903; he retired as Hallettsville City Engineer in 1972, after serving in that capacity 35 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, a sister, seven half brothers, and five half-sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lydia Trlica Dusek of Hallettsville; a brother, Oscar Dusek of Hallettsville; and two sisters, Mrs. Edward Guenther of Weimar and Mrs. Leonard Woytek of Hallettsville.

Pallbearers were Victor and Melvin Dusek, Dennis Woytek, "Doc" Matejek, George Cervenka and Tom kostelnik.

Brother Dusek was born March 18, 1906 in Lavaca County, the son of Joseph and Rosie Pecena Dusek. He was married to Bessie Krizak on November 15, 1927 at Hallettsville. He was employed as a mechanic for many years at Loessin Implement Co. He was a member of the United Church of Christ and the UCC Brotherhood.

His wife, Bessie, survives along with a son and daughter-in-law, Emil Joe and Loretta Dusek of Weimar; two grandchildren, Gary and Diana Dusek; two brothers, Adolph and Oscar, both of Hallettsville; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Julia) Woytek of Hallettsville and Mrs. Edward (Albina) Guenther of Weimar.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, seven half-brothers and three half-sisters.

In addition, insulation manufacturers must furnish package labels stating the R-value of the insulation -- or, for loosefill insulation, they must state the thickness and coverage area for various R-values.

R-value is a measure of insulation's ability to resist heat flow.

The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.

EARLY FERTILIZATION FOR 1980 CROPS COULD PAY Texas farmers might be able to save some money as well as get a jump on the 1980 crop year by fertilizing cropland early.

"The possibility of shorter fertilizer supplies and much higher costs next spring should provide some incentive for farmers to put out fertilizer early for next spring's crops," believes Dr. Charles Welch. soil chemist with the Texas

Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A and M University System.

Increased crop acreages, export demands and reduced fertilizer production have caused a decline in fertilizer inventories, points out Welch. This, coupled with an increasing transportation problem, makes it uncertain and difficult for many local fertilizer dealers to obtain fertilizer to maintain a desired inventory level.

And fertilizer prices are going up due to increased production costs, inflation and market pressures. By planting time next spring, some fertilizer materials such as anhydrous ammonia and ammonium phosphate may cost twice as much as last spring.

Applying fertilizer in fall or early winter to land for next spring's crops can be a paying proposition when sound agronomic principles are followed.

The soil chemist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A and M University System, notes these advantages of fall fertilization: 1. Being sure that the desired fertilizer can be obtained.

2. Hedging against possible price increases.

3. Preventing possible delays planting time next spring.

4. Reducing this year's taxable income.

A major consideration when weighing the pros and cons of fall fertilization should be the cost of borrowing money for an additional two or three months to buy fertilizer now.

While little difference has been found in fall and spring applications of phosphorous and potassium, studies have shown that nitrogen gives slightly better response when applied in the spring. When using nitrogen in the fall,.

Welch advises using the ammonium source and applying it only after the soil temperature has dropped below 50 degree F. According to Welch, much of the nitrogen applied during the winter may be lost if the nitrate form is used or if conditions are favorable for nitrifying bacteria to convert ammonium to nitrate. Nitrates can be leached from coarse-textured soils or can be denitrified in clay soils that stay water-logged for long periods.

Regardless of when fertilizer is to be applied, Welch urges producers to base their fertilization practice on the expected response from each plant nutrient. Soil tests can help producers determine the level of nutrients in the soil and how much additional materials are needed to meet their production goals.
