This is the last issue of our SPJST Vestnik you readers and members will receive in 1979 before the 1979 Christmas Day is here and therefore, we want to wish ALL of you a very Merry, Happy and, mainly, Healthy Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; alas though! statistics prove that some certain percentage of our citizens in the U.S. and Texas will not live to see another Christmas, especially, due to highway automobile accidents! Would Fate allow that this editor could change those dire predictions! All can rest assured that, were it in yours truly's power, that would be done. Let us hope in our small way that, by you reading this almost a week prior to those holidays, all of you will be EXTRA careful and that none of our Society's members will be unfortunate during that period. It was an immediate success and they made good money in the venture, however, in one year the young man, known to his friends and intimates as "Al" got tired of that venture and sold out to his partner and decided to do something else. He did: - he started working with electricity and experimented with it very diligently and invented the light bulb - his name: Thomas Alva Edison. What would Christmas be without lights?!

He cut down a small evergreen tree and took it home and decorated it with small candles and lit them for his wife and children; they all enjoyed it very much.

President's New Year's Message And Report In Issue of 2 Jan. 1980.

NEWSBRIEFS Adolf B. Dusek, 76, passed away at his home in Hallettsville on Sunday morning, December 9th. Funeral services- were held from the Vsetin Brethren Church in the Bila Hora Community near Hallettsville on Tuesday, December 11th, with burial in the Vsetin Church Cemetery. Bro. Dusek was a longtime member of Lodge 16, and was currently serving as president of that lodge. He had attended several SPJST conventions, including the last few conventions as a member of the Credentials Committee. He was a former city engineer for the City of Hallettsville. *** Emil E. We still have a few days left to write up some good sales for December. If you don't know what you can do for someone, you can always sell an insurance plan and give to a person as a gift and this kind of a gift would be appreciated by all; you would be giving a person a helping hand.

It is always nice to think of giving at Christmas time, but we should not forget we should give all the year through.

Number One sales representative for November was Brother Roy Hranicky, with 11 members for $143,000 in insurance sales. Congratulations, Roy! Number Two was Sister Thelma Hrncir with four members for $14,000 of insurance.

Number Three was Sister Pauline Bayer with six members for $11,000 of insurance.

This is good work, thanks to all of you.

January through November our sales were: 238 members for $1,621,500 of insurance. This is very good, let's keep on going uphill-that shows progress.

In the early part of January, 1980, I will have a full report on all sales representatives who sold insurance in 1979.

It is very dry out this way, our best gift would be a good rain for Christmas.

Here's hoping you all health, happiness, and prosperity for the holidays and throughout 1980.

LODGE NO. 54 CELEBRATES SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE Sunday, December 2, 1979 Lodge No. 54's Diamond Jubilee success story is impressive, but no more impressive than the story of the men and women whose efforts and personal integrity contributed toward the final outcome.

Among those who have contributed to the growth are the active members of Lodge No. 54 who possess the patience, foresight and ability, coupled with enthusiasm, to ensure that a job will be done. The active members take personal interest in the lodge---they know that just "belonging" to a lodge does not necessarily make the lodge grow; fraternalism is very much a part of their lives.

We, the members of Lodge No. 54, recall the early beginnings by some of our oldtimers, which were vastly different from today; but despite the changed conditions, people have remained the same; there is still a need for a fraternal life. Because of today's fast living, the individual needs the sharing of his fellow human's warmth, and it is on this basis that fraternalism exists.

It was on the 4th day of December, 1904, that eleven members: John Machac, Herman Holik, Chas. Zajicek, Chas. Zapalac, Albin Rydel, Will Tobola, Robert Cervenka, Anton Slovak,

Vinc Hutyra, Rudolph Barton and Ludmila Peters, pledged their participation to a new lodge---that being the 54th in the SPJST Society. To them, a certificate of insurance was not just another policy from which the beneficiaries would draw benefits at the death of the insured; they immediately felt the feeling of "belonging" and enjoyed the personal contacts from their membership.

From 1904 to 1979, the presidents of Lodge No. 54 were honored for their services to the lodge. A commemoration was held in memory of the deceased presidents: Herman Holik, Charles P. Zapalac, Paul S. Skrabanek, Jos. F. Urbanovsky, Rud. J. Marak, Frank M. Cocek, Robert Cervenka, Method Pazdral (who later transferred to Lodge No. 36), August A. Peters, Tom Matis, Elo Zatopek, August Pustejovsky, Albin Sulak and Frank H. Soukup.

Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain information and a picture of our first president, Brother Herman Holik.

Moreover, Brother Joe Dujka, Sr. of Ross Lodge No. 126 served as president when their entire membership (100 plus members) merged with Lodge No. 54, West on December 5th, 1977. He was also among the honored presidents at the Diamond Jubilee.

Our current president, serving since 1973, is Brother Ernest Zahirniak; he also received a large plaque for his services to the lodge. Brother Zahirniak, with his spouse, Sister Mona, who is a youth leader at the lodge, both devote a lot of time to the lodge activities.

For some of the active members on the day of the 75th Anniversary started at 4 a.m. A delicious barbecued-beef dinner was manned by chefs, Brothers John Sulak and Ted Kocian, with the help of several brothers and sisters of the lodge.

Promptly at 1:30 p.m., the live broadcast of the special program was aired over KHBR-Hillsboro by hosts, Rudy Sefcik and David Kolar, both members of Lodge Jaromir No. 54. They had complete charge of the program while our financial-secretary and treasurer, Brother Bob Wright, acted as master of ceremonies.

During the planning stage of the Diamond Jubilee, the Planning Committee agreed to make the occasion a happy one, with a brief program and no formalities.

The program opened with the "Star Spangled Banner" and "Kde Domov WU" by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of District III director ., Brother Sid Pokladnik; a cordial welcome by Lodge 54 President Ernest Zahirniak then followed. West Mayor Adolph Muska read and

Wednesday, December 19, 1979 presented the Proclamation of SPJST Lodge No. 54 Day. The address was then followed by Texas Representative Brother Dan Kubiak of Rockdale, who delivered a very inspiring message which was given a standing ovation. A brief response was made by Brother Rudy Sefcik, and SPJST Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris presented his remarks on behalf of the SPJST Society.

The highlight of the program was the presentation of plaques to the Lodge 54 presidents' families by Vice President Ted Kocian and Youth Leader Mona Zahirniak. The families were: Leroy and Betty Zapalac of Dallas, son and daughter-in-law of Charles P. Zapalac; John and Helen Popp of Waco, son-in-law and daughter of Paul S. Skrabanek; Lillian Kozelski of West, daughter of Jos. F. Urbanovsky; Raymond and Lillian Nemecek of West, son-in-law and daughter of Robert Cervenka; Bernard and Doris Cocek of Carrollton, grandson and his wife of Frank M. Cocek; Alfred and Margaret Stanislav of Burnet, son-in-law and daughter of August A. Peters; Bessie Matis of West and Norma Farris of Austin, daughter-in-law and granddaughter of Tom Matis; Mrs. August Pustejovsky and Erwin Pustejovsky of West, the widow and son of August Pustejovsky; Robert and Mary Shebesta of West, brother-in-law and sister of Albin Sulak; Rudolph and Marie Soukup of West, brother and sister-in-law of Frank H. Soukup.

Unfortunately, the other families of the following presidents were unable to attend and accept the plaques. They were: Mrs. Louise Spacek of Granger, niece of Rud. J. Marak; Mrs. W. Bowen McClellan of Waco, daughter of Method Pazdral; and Mrs. Elo Zatopek of West, the widow of Elo Zatopek.

Brother Joe Dujka, Sr. of Ross and his wife Mary, was honored with an oval-shaped plaque with the following inscription: SPJST Lodge No. 54 West Honorary Recognition is awarded Brother Joe Dujka President of Lodge 126, Ross for meritorious service from 1963-1977 and leadership in the merger of Lodges 126 and 54.

The last presentation was presented to our Lodge 54 President Ernest Zahirniak with a large Texas-shaped plaque, with the following inscription:

SPJST Lodge No. 54 West Honorary Recognition is awarded Brother Ernest Zahirniak 15th President Lodge 54 This citation conveys a sincere Expression of esteem from the co-workers and members.

The finale of the program ended with "America The Beautiful" by the Concert Orchestra.

The West Czech Beseda dancers, under the direction of Sister Maggie Grmela presented some of the special numbers.

Afterward, Brothers John Mynar and Burl Shelton had charge of the auction; over one hundred (100) items were donated by the local and neighboring businesses, which resulted in a tremendous success.

The country store, which benefited the youth club, also had successful results.

Our drawing for six special prizes concluded the affair. The winners were announced in the following order: 1) Mrs. J.P. Krupala of Harlingen -half-beef (approx. 200 lbs.)

2) Irene Kotrla of West -- $100 U.S. Savings Bond 3) Jerome Ermis of Houston -- 4-qt. ice-cream freezer 4) Polly Donohoe of Whitney -- clock radio 5) Louis Gajdosik of West -- blow dryer 6) Danny Cargile of Whitney -hamburger fryer We wish to acknowledge the wonderful cooperation of so many lodges for their contributions and our newspapers, radio and television stations, namely: Channel 6 (KCEN-TV) and Channel 10 (KWTX-TV) that gave us such fine coverage beforehand and during our program, especially Mr. Joe Walters of Channel 10, who filmed the highlights of the afternoon's affair which were seen on television the same night. Also, very good publicity coverage was given by The Waco Tribune, The West News, The Reporter in Hillsboro, and to Miss Agnes Houdek of Dallas and Jan Vaculik of West who wrote about the event in the Vestnik (Czech section). Moreover the following Radio Stations: KHBR, KKIK and KWTX certainly deserve a mention for their pro-mos, and to Mayor Adolph Muska who proclaimed SPJST Lodge No. 54 Day on 2 December 1979; and to Mr. Al Payne who announced the event for us on his daily news program so many times. We also offer our thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mynar who made and donated the beautiful homemade quilt and then turned around and purchased the quilt at the auction for $360; and to

Sister Beanie Kacir, who contributed tow aro the anniversary flower arrangement; to Mona Zahirniak for baking the three-tier anniversary cake; and to the program participants and members from the fifteen different lodges attending our anniversary.

We, the Planning Committee, composed of Maxine Sefcik, Mona Zahirniak, John Mynar, Beanie Kacir and Bob Wright, who worked as a team with the cooperation of our other lodge officers, wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to all of whom helped make it possible for Lodge No. 54's Diamond Jubilee become a reality.

LODGE NO. 187, ROUND ROCK

Our lodge Christmas party, Monday, December 10, was a huge success; 111 members plus several guests enjoyed a delicious covered dish supper and a good time was had by all. We were honored by the presence of Mr. Henry Vitek, District II director, and Mr. Leonard Mikeska, Supreme Lodge secretary-treasurer, who graciously installed our new officers for next year--Ray Woytek, president; Albert L. Lange, first vice-president; Gene Parker, second vice-president; Rubie Volek, secretary; Sharon Holman, treasurer; Ella Woytek, financial secretary and Susan and Ronald Woytek, youth leaders. Also recognized were our new Board of Trustees-Logan Bartz, Ben Rosenblad, Jr., David "Red" Oman, Irene Weidner, Henry Wobus, Ed Volek, Arnold Leschber and Reggie Geistman. We are very proud of these new officers and trustees who have accepted these positions of responsibility and look forward to a prosperous 1980 with them as our leaders. All officers also serve on the Board of Trustees.

David Oman was recognized by President Woytek as our new game night chairman; he travelled to Houston to pick up the game equipment we purchased from Lodge 88. We are now in the process of ordering new cards with prospects of getting started with game nights the first of February.

A special thanks goes to Albert Lange and Larry Krueger for obtaining and setting up sound equipment for out meeting and future activities. They did a great job.

Our Youth Club decorated a beautiful Christmas tree purchased by our youth leaders with decorations brought by members. This tree is on our stage and another, equally beautiful Christmas tree, was brought by Sharon Gavin and decorated by her with decorations also brought by members; this tree is at the

term of Wilma Peterson who resigned effective November 13.

At our December Sth meeting Claud Baumbach was appointed, by President Woytek, to fill Peterson's unexpired term for 1979. These are two more examples of people accepting additional responsibilities on top of jobs already held. Our members are great!

The deer season is in full swing and the Wistners, who have a ranch near Crockett, have returned with good luck.

On opening day one hour after sunup, Lea Wistner bagged a fat beautiful buck; she was the only lady hunting with six men. She was the champion that day: somehow, the men were not very friendly to her that day. Then two days later, Roger Wistner got his buck and everything was fine. He taught her how to shoot that 300.

They are both still happy over their most wonderful vacation this summer: Twenty-five days in Switzerland. Their daughter; Gladene and her two children of Barcelona, Spain met them in Geneva and then they spent this beautiful vacation together in Interlocken, Switzerland. From there they traveled by boat, rail and train. Interlocken is located at the base of the Alps with two large lakes surrounding it. They called the Alps, Rack Rail beautiful Jungfraw over 11,330 feet covered with ice and snow. It was like a dream.

Mary Werner led us in the pledge of allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers showed all were present.

Minutes from the November meeting were read by our Secretary Mary Werner which were approved as read.

A thank you card for the gift of fruit to our residents at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home was read; also several Season Greetings. The president read a letter from Brother Louis Hanus who commended us on the good work we are doing in our lodge,

Wednesday, December 19, 1979 Financial Secretary Aleene Zwahr gave her report and Willie Mae Kuykendal, treasurer, gave her report also.

A detailed report of the Special Fund was given by Gilbert Walzel, who also gave the list of upcoming activities at the hall.

Our next meeting will be held January 6th, instead of the usual second Sunday of the month, due to a conflicting activity.

The Entertaining Committee met and reported that our annual chili supper will be held February 12, 1980; everyone mark your calendar in advance.

We were notified that Lodge No. 88 of Houston will again entertain with their singing at our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home, Saturday, December 15th at 2 p.m. Let us have a good representation from our lodge, because you won't regret it.

The newly-elected officers for 1980 were duly installed by Brother Herbert Nowotny.

Attendance prize was won by Charlie Matcek.

Refund checks were handed out and the meeting adjourned.

During the singing of Christmas carols, Ole Santa appeared on the scene to hand out bags of fruit and candy to a group of excited boys and girls and little tots.

After his departure for his continuous journey, everyone enjoyed an hour of good fellowship and food.

LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE Lodge No. 107 met on December 2nd, 1979 at 3 p.m. President Bayer called the meeting to order and the pledge was led

by Annette Dzuik.

All the officers were present.

President Bayer reported that Christine Baumann is still in the hospital and that Emma Zidek is also ill. Selma Hrbacek is recuperating from surgery. We wish all of you a speedy recovery. Silas Smith is reported to be improving and DYC Maxine Pavliska said Dorothy Massey has a broken foot. Hurry and get well, both of you.

A regular business meeting followed.

New members accepted on motion by Wm. Pavliska, and seconded by John Burleson were: Leann Polasek, Kimberly Deagen and Cynthia Deagen. James Dzuik converted his JT policy.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer stated the youth club was making 84 coat hangers for the nursing home and urged all youth

9 clubbers to work hard. Many of the mothers pitched in and soon all hangers were covered and ready to be presented to the residents. I am sure they will be appreciated. A picture of the bus is to be taken and sent to President Morris and the Vestnik.

President Bayer reported on the price of chairs. Motion by John Burleson, and seconded by Lori Hrna that the lodge purchase 100 chairs. Motion carried.

The R and R Committee was asked to meet because some R and R's needed to be changed.

Correspondence from the Editor and the Supreme Lodge, also from Emil Matula of San Antonio was acknowledged.

President Bayer gave a financial report.

A floral tribute was sent to the graveside services of Frank Cielenski of Adkins who passed away recently. Brother Cielenski had been a member since 1915.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family.

Officers elected for 1980 were: President Bob Bayer, Vice President Rex Purchis, Secretary Pauline Pavliska, Financial Secretary Phyllis Purchis, Treasurer Henry Sralla, Youth Leader Polly Bayer; Assistant Youth Leaders Liz Bielefeld and Barbara Burleson; Reporter Pauline Pavliska.

Convention delegates elected were: 1st, Bob Bayer; 2nd, Wm. Pavliska; 3rd, Polly Bayer.

Alternate delegates were: Henry Sralla, Maxine Pavliska and Pauline Pavliska.

The door prize was won by Phyllis Purchis.

A delicious covered dish supper was served after the meeting.

The next meeting will be held January 6th at 4:30 p.m. Try to attend. A nice crowd makes the meeting more interesting. We will have a social after the meeting, so be there. We will be looking for you.

The Saginaw Chamber of Commerce will have a country-western dance with Jerry Max Lane for Saturday, December 29th, and you are invited, New Year's Eve we will have The Western Sentinels; hats, favors and midnight champagne.

Our country-western dance on December 1st was a packed house. We want to extend a special thank you to our out-of-town guests, Sisters Ann Banfi, Annette Schwabowski and two youth members, Deann and Christy Schwabowski of Chicago, Illinois who came by, after the Convention Center, and worked in the cleanup until 4 a.m., and of course, to our regular crew who put in such long hours.

Jerry will be back for our dance on January 12th.

My husband, Brother Benny Pavey, spent several days in the hospital last week and I'm glad to report he is better.

The World Gymnastics are behind us but we still have a lot of tired people trying to catch up on some rest, and the youngsters trying to make up for two weeks of homework. There is still a lot of excitement among them, and something they will never forget.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last lodge monthly meeting was held Sunday, December 2, 1979 at 2 p.m. with Brother Jerry Pechal, president, in charge.

President Pechal welcomed everyone to the meeting and recognized the following: Leonora Talasek, Mary Williams, L.T. Gaines, Ethel Harris and Ann Balusek. We hope you enjoyed the

Secretary Ginger Klusacek was called on for the roll call of officers and sales representatives. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read. Correspondence included: Mortuary dues from the Supreme Lodge, Christmas Greetings from the Supreme Lodge, from the editor of the Vestnik, Brother Rudy Sefcik and his family, and from the office of Supreme Lodge Secretary Treasurer Leonard D. Mikeska and his secretaries; also a thank you letter from Sister Dorothy Morris for being elected as an alternate delegate, and additional donations to the Memorial Fund in Brother Leon Sodek's memory by Brother J.L. and Sister La Verne Vanicek, $15, by Brother Alfred and Sister Martha Klusacek, $10; by Brother Woodrow and Sister Gladys Marek, $10;

by Sister Alice Banning, $5; and by her mother, Mrs. Ruth Smith, $5. We also received a letter from Lodge No. 133, San Antonio about the purchase of an ad in the upcoming Convention Brochure and we voted to buy a full page ad but we are to have a new picture made of the hall, so the paved frontage would update the previous picture.

New applicants for membership were: Katherine Ann Billeck, Billy Joe Billeck, Jr., James Paul Billeck, Tammy Lynn Hoelscher, Peggy M. Krcha, Judy Gay Krcha, Carrie B. Taylor and Sarah Elizabeth Trampota. We voted to, accept these members into the lodge membership, so you all are being encouraged to take active roles at Lodge No. 47, if possible. Paidup policyholders are: Michael Kuban, Billie Cox and Dorothea Vanicek.

These members were reported to have been hospitalized since the last meeting: Brothers Frank E. Hejl, Jr., Casey Bragewitz and State Field Manager Silas Smith and Sisters Mary Kohutek and Lowvica Lucko. I hope you have recovered from your ailments and are back home and gaining your strength daily.

In the officers' reports, the president thanked those who helped with the filter cleaning and with the new sign.

Treasurer Sister Ruby Bolton and Financial Secretary Willie Kohutek gave their monthly reports. The chairpersons having books gave their reports, also.

Board minutes were read by Sister Lillian Kosarek. The trustees had recommended that a vote be taken regarding the new sign being constructed. After a discussion, the

majority voted to dedicate it to all deceased members of Lodge No. 47, instead of just one member.

Youth Leader Sister Dolores Skrabanek gave her report. She announced that two practices are to be held before the Christmas program. We had no volunteers for youth leader so we are still looking for a dedicated person to take charge in the January meeting. So please volunteer if you are interested.

The Rules and Regulations' Chairman Brother Dan Balusek and the secretary of this committee, Sister Dolores Skrabanek, read the proposed changes in the R and R for 1980. We had received a resolution from Brother Nick A. Morris, regarding the Entertainment Committee and their continued operation of the dances for next year. A question was asked and the resolution failed (30 to 37); voting by secret ballot.

Therefore, the new entertainment chairman is the president of the lodge hall for any booking: weddings, parties, anniversaries, reunions, etc. contact Jerry Pechal at AC 817-985-2545 or at Route 3, Box 275, Temple, Texas 76501.

After the R and R's were adopted, we voted for a ticket chairman, Brother Charlie and Sister Leah Marek received 34 votes and Brother L.J. and Sister Vlasta Motl received 28. The bar chairman election was postponed to the January 6th meeting. Cleaning chairpersons elected are two couples: Brother Emil and Sister Frances Hejl and Brother Henry and Sister Della Mares after Brother Jerry and Sister Annie Chupik would not accept the nomination after serving four long years. Thanks to. the Chupiks for a job well done. Brother Frank Klinkovsky was elected an auditor by acclamation. The committee appointments will be made at the next meeting held Sunday, January 6th, 1980 at 2 p.m.

There will be 100 copies of the R and R's made for distribution to the families desiring a copy.

Birthdays observed in December will be

by Brother J.D. Chlapek and Dorothy Pechal. Anniversaries will be observed by these couples: Charlie and Leah Marek, Frank and Clara Hejl, Woodrow and Gladys Marek, Edwin and Theresa Chlapek, and Jerry and Dorothy Pechal.

Congratulations to all of the celebrants and many more years to come.

Door prize winner was Sister Marie Pavelka. After adjournment a happy hour and lunch was enjoyed by all present.

The lodge's Christmas party was held December 9th, beginning with the youth club's program, the lodge Choral Club presented four Czech Christmas Carols

and sang with the youth club to conclude their program and to bring on Santa Claus. The bearded jolly good Santa Claus was the center of attraction for about twenty minutes. He held the youngest person present, little Sarah Ann Zavodny, born September 11, 1979.

Thanks to the youth club, the Choral Club and Santa Claus for entertaining at our annual event. Those who helped with the decorating, brought the abundance of various foods, helped with the drinks, eggnog or in the kitchen, with the preparations and the cleaning, afterwards, a big thank you. I will not attempt to name anyone for fear of omitting someone. You know who you are. You all really pitched in and helped where you were needed. Thanks to all for making this party, a good one.

The next lodge meeting is set for Sunday, January 6th, 1980 at 2 p.m. with the installation of the lodge officers and trustees, so start the new year right by attending the lodge meeting in the first month of 1980.

It doesn't seem like twelve months have elapsed in this year, but they have. The year of 1979 is quickly coming to a close.

New Year's Eve reservations are being taken at the Saturday dances or call 773-4694 after 5 p.m. weekdays; Eric Honza of Ennis will furnish the music.

Also, Al Grebnick and his orchestra of Nebraska will be at Seaton Star Hall Thursday, January 24, 1980, from 8 to 12 p.m. Make plans to attend.

Here's hoping everyone will have their families at home for the Christmas holidays. I am wishing all readers, friends and relatives a Merry Christmas and much health and happiness in the coming New Year of 1980.

LODGE NO. 20, GRANGER

DISTRICT II

The Granger SPJST Lodge No. 20 held their annual Christmas party and meeting Sunday, December 2nd at the lodge hall. The annual meeting was held at 2 p.m.

Officers for the coming year were elected. They are: President Vera Gorubec, Vice President Henry Vitek, Secretary Leslie Loessin, Treasurer Raymond Holubec, Financial Secretary Norma Cavanaugh, Youth Leader Rita Marburger, Assistant Youth Leader Gloria Ebner, 2nd Assistant Youth Leader Norma Cavanaugh.

The Property Committee is Emil Naiser and Albin Machu.

After the installation of officers by District II Director Henry Vitek, the lodge presented their State King Terry Loessin and State Queen Kelly Cavanaugh with a Christmas gift. The Granger lodge is very proud to have both king and queen from their lodge to represent the State SPJST. After the meeting was adjourned, the youth club led the audience in singing of Christmas carols.

Then came the visit from Santa Claus who greeted everyone, asked their Christmas wishes and gave bags of fruit and candy to everyone present.

Each member of the youth club brought a gift for the kitchen. The gifts were opened by President Vera Gorubec. The lodge was very happy to receive these useful items for the kitchen and wants to thank the youth club.

Everyone present enjoyed fellowship and a barbecued chicken and sausage supper.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The Glenn Miller dance Saturday, December 8 was a splendid affair. The Chandelier Ballroom was filled to capacity and the guests were dressed in the holiday spirit to blend in with the beautiful Christmas decorations all through the lodge. Everyone enjoyed the music and the special environment. The Hosting Committee for the evening was: Ludwig and Marion Mikes (Ludwig lost quite a bit of weight since his illness, but looks good) in charge with their lovely daughter, Laurie, and her fiance, Steven Fisbeck, also Adele and husband, Bill Hughes, and Rudy and Celeste Darilek.

This was an advance ticket sale and the house was sold out; all eight members on the committee were busy seating and admitting the guests. The four sisters were dressed lovely in long gowns to blend in with the guests.

At this dance we had the pleasure to entertain a bus full of guests from Columbus, Tx. This group met with other friends of Sugarland and Galveston and surrounded five tables. Mr. and Mrs. Forest Brooks, with many of the group, were at the Guy Lombardo dance in the spring and enjoyed it very much.

Before the dance I had a nice visit with Herman and Lucile Reed in the Blue Room over refreshing cocktails. Later, with Viola Cox, we enjoyed the company of the second vice-chairman of the entertainment committee, Leland Hensley and wife, Dorothy, in company of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Miller. Sister Tillie Helmcamp, with her sister Alice and husband Andy Braikovich, arrived and we all enjoyed the refreshing drinks prepared by our loyal bartender Nath before joining the happy dancers in the Ballroom. We appreciate the support of all these good people. During the evening I spotted few members, Sister Ruth Durham with Brother G.Gt Renfro also Vera Colarik with her escort, Bill Cross.

Also Jackie and Clifford Leyendecker with Herman and Margerette Liebscher

were enjoying the dance. At Table 44 Brother Joe and Sister Della Miksch entertained friends of Taylor Lodge No. 48. Attorney Ted Hejl and spouse, Kay, winged in from Taylor in their private plane. Kay's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Quade, also enjoyed the dance. Sister Annie Hejl, successful SPJST sales representative of Lodge No. 48 is Ted's mother.

Sunday was a busy day for members of Lodge No. 88. The annual lodge meeting took place and kept the members busy late into the night. The monthly December meeting was called to order by President Jerry Ermis at 10 a.m. and adjourned at 11:30. Right away we went into the annual meeting and adjourned for dinner at 12:30 till 1:30. All present' were served a delicious braised-beef dinner with rice and vegetables. Free.

The meeting convened at 1:45 and the lodge rules and regulations were on the agenda; this took quite some time. Next was election of officers: Elected President Mildred Holeman, 1st Vice President Tillie Helmcamp, 2nd Vice President Frances Olexa, Secretary Viola Cox, Financial Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt, Treasurer Margaret Allbritton, Guide Helen Hegwood, Flag Bearer Lynn Pflughaupt and Sergeant-at-Arms Frank Tilich. The, following is the acceptance speech of newly-elected President Mildred Holeman: Having been elected your president is truly one of the most exciting moments of my life. Perhaps more eloquent words could be found to describe this event, but I have chosen a few select ones because of their time-honored and valued qualities.

These words are: PRIDE, HONOR, DIGNITY, RESPONSIBILITY, LEADERSHIP, WORTHINESS and HUMILITY. Together these concepts and ideas express my emotion and furnish the foundation of my goals. My sincere desire is to merit the trust you have placed in me.

Lodge 88 is a proud organization. It has a right to be proud. The fraternalism that we exemplify should have pride, honor and dignity, AND IT DOES. One of the maxims that is a guiding principle of my life is "PARTICIPATION." To me, participation is the key that opens the door to fuller relations in our jobs, with our families and friends, in our education and our very being. I speak of participation in the fullest sense. I speak of a -participation which encompasses care, efficiency, honor, enthusiasm, pride, appearance, and respect for others as they participate.

These are the feelings, the moods, and the ingredients which make up the participation of which I speak.

12 This type of participation results in the depositing of a portion of yourself and what you have to offer into the mainstream life of this lodge, and the beautiful part is that the more you invest, the more dividends you earn.

This lodge needs every member to participate fully to attain the objections which it desires and deserves. At the beginning, I spoke of pride, honor, dignity, responsibility, leadership, worthiness and humility. To use them personally, I take great pride in having been elected as your president. I shall aim for the worthiness and give my all to the leadership. The humility I bring with me!

I challenge each member to participate fully in the coming year that we may invest much that is good, reap many dividends for our work, and leave a share for those who follow.

Thank you for electing me your president.

The fifteen member Board of Trustees, a body of very important and loyal members, resulted in the following being elected: Orville Crossman, Gene Barcak, Joe Miksch, Royal Warnesch, E. Zalmanek, Leander Pflughaupt, Tim Kostom, Joe Elzner, Willie Wehring, Karl Lindemann, Johnie Broz, Willie Neskorik, Ed Kadlecek, Franklin Bravenec and John Hilsher. This was followed by electing seventy (70) delegates to the 1980 SPJST convention and ten alternates. It was quite late when the last vote was called and the installation of the new-elected took place

by District V Director Brother Louis Hanus. It was a trying and full day, but, most of them, stayed to the very end. We all were fed good at noon and, at supper time, free including refreshments.

A happy couple, Jerry and Agnes Lopanec attending all dances and activities at the lodge, were honored by their two daughters, Shirley and husband, Ralph Todd and Gloria and husband, Roger Adkins with a barbecue dinner and all kinds of goodies for their 39th wedding anniversary November 25th, 1979 in their lovely home and presenting them with lovely gifts, whith they opened with the help of their three grandchildren. Tammy, Tracy and Jason. To enjoy these two people's happiness, Agnes' twin sister, Helen and her husband, Edwin Velek, were also present. Congratulations.

On the sick list, we have Brother Gilbert Polnick in the St. Joseph Hospital in the intensive care unit.

Gilbert was stricken with a heart attack.

We wish you a speedy recovery.

This month, again, we had an avalanche of wedding anniversaries: A.J.

and Emma Jarisch - 50; Herbert and Gazela" Huber - 49; Edwin and Kay Klessel - 30; A.J. and Elsie Zalesky - 38; Victor and Evelyn Janak - 29 and Tim and Rosalee Kostom - 13. To all these good members we wish many, many more in good health.

I want to say "thank you", to all the members for their visits while I was in the hospital and since I returned home, for the beautiful flowers, the telephone calls, the "get well" cards, and last, but certainly the most important, your prayers and good wishes.

A special "thanks" to the Supreme Lodge officers and employees for all their kindness and support.

To each of the local lodges from whom I received get well wishes; thank you very much, they were greatly appreciated.

I was hospitalized for one week, from November 12, until November 19. I haven't had a bit of trouble since I had the mild attack. My biggest trouble is not being able to go to work, or go deer hunting. My doctor says I may go deer hunting the final week of the season, and I expect to return to work after the first of January.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH

Dear Members and Friends; A wonderfully abundant Thanksgiving is now a memory, so it's countdown time for Mr. Santa Claus to launch his vehicle and aim it targetwise to late December 24, and to all the youngsters who are eagerly counting off the days. Our own Lodge 92 Christmas tree and party will be over when this is printed, but there's the first meeting of the fresh new decade of 1980 to begin planning for on January the 13th. We will begin our year with the following officers who were elected Dec. 9th: President Kenneth Krivanek, Vice President Albert Kubala, Secretary Christine Zich, Treasurer John Murphy and Financial Secretary Joe Krivanek.

Trustees named were Al ,Svacek, Raymond Hubenak, Frank Tesar, John Paprskar and Albert Kubala.

A moment of silent prayer was observed

in memory of Sister Mary Juan. A fitting tribute was given to her in Mary Cihacek's Ladies' Circle report in the last issue of Vestnik.

Winter time travelers included Joseph Becan who visited the home of his son, Alfred, in Rosenberg on Thanksgiving Day. Another son, Robert took his family and father there and also to see Astroworld and friends residing in Houston. Ronnie Davis, a member of the Air Force, spent some time recently with his parents Bernie and Margaret Kratky.

As our meeting progressed, delegates to the State Convention next year were chosen and they are Joe Krivanek, John Murphy, Kenneth Krivanek, Albert Kabala, Al Kercho, Al Svacek and Liz Howard.

We would like to list a few donations made to our Memorial Fund: Dona Hubenak sent $5 in memory of Mary Juran and $5 in memory of Bernard Polk; Rudy and Justine Chaloupka donated $10 remembering Mr. and Mrs. John C. Motl of Lodge 47, $10 in memory of Mr. and Mrs. John 'Chaloupka, Sr. and $5 for Mary Juran; Carl, Christine and Shirley Zich donated $5 in memory of Mary Juran. The last tribute for Sis. Juran was $10 given by Joe and Nancy Paprskar.

Gratefully, our sick people were few this month. Juanita Johnnie fell at work and broke her wrist. Christine Zich is out of the hospital and doing well, but Richard Hubenak was reported still confined at St. Luke's in Houston following surgery.

At the January 13th meeting a covered dish supper will be served.

This being the last missive of the year '79, and the last before Christmas Day, may I use it send Special Greetings and ask the blessing of the Holy Christ Child on each of you during this wonderful season, from myself and on behalf of the members of Lodge No. 92 "Viem podivuhodne vanoce" (A wonderful Christmas).

DALLAS CIRCLE OF

CZECH WOMEN It was a beautiful day for a Christmas party. Everyone was so happy and thankful for such ideal weather. Our Circle met December 6, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wyatt Cafeteria, 6310 E. Mockingbird Lane, for our annual Christmas party. Sister Bartos called the meeting to order.

Sister Kopecek read a beautiful Christmas poem of thanksgiving. The pledge of allegiance to the US flag was repeated.

Wednesday, December 19, 1979 Guests were welcomed and introduced.

The guests were Dorothy Hagar, Mary Kubacak, Lucille Stout and John Bubak.

Our long-time regular guest, George Skotak, was missed. He is recuperating at Doctor's Hospital from a fractured hip. It was good to have our Recording-Secretary J. Kankrlik back with us after several months' absence.

She informed us that she will be with us regularly after the first of the year, since she will no longer be a "working woman".

Corresponding-secretary M. Sebestik read a note from Mrs. Ben Rychlik, daughter of our late Sister Frances Strouhal, on behalf of all the Strouhal family, thanking the Circle for remembering them during their time of sorrow. A "thank-you" note was read from the Farley Boys' Home in Amarillo, for the donation. This was a donation requested by Sister Toberny instead of receiving a gift from the Circle while in the hospital.

Sister M. Noska sent 11 get-well and other cards. Sister Toberny thanked everyone for the cards sent her. Sister Skotak thanked everyone for the cards sent to husband George.

Christmas greetings were read from Sisters M. Toberny, F. Konakovsky of Taylor, and Andela Subertova of Prague, Czechoslovakia. Several sisters conveyed Christmas greetings from absentee sisters. Several sisters present expressed their Christmas wishes to everyone, in lieu of sending Christmas cards. There were too numerous to mention names, so I won't do so; I mistakenly may leave someone out. Hope all of you understand.

Those on our sick list are Sister M. Toberny, who is now in Lancaster Nursing Home, Irvin Voss, husband of Sister M. Voss; George Skotak, husband of Sister S. Skotak, and Mrs. Zemanek, mother of Sister L. Pavelka. To each is wished a speedy recovery. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Barfield, Cechan, Linda Kaftans, Kaska, Kohn, Lesikar, Mach, Peressenyi, Pokladnik, Reames, Skrabanek, Spain and Sparks.

There were 50 present at our meeting.

Sister V. Jurcik, her daughter and family, have returned from a trip to several places in New Mexico. Sister L. Slovak is planning a trip to Las Vegas.

Don't forget "Christmas Around the World" at the DeGoyler Estate, 8525 Garland Ave., December 18-19-20, 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 daily, free to the public.

After the business meeting, we adjourned for lunch; each one chose whatever her appetite desired. After lunch we exchanged gifts. Thanks to Sister M, Malooly for decorating the

13 tables so beautifully and for furnishing a Christmas tree. Thanks also to Sisters M. Sebestik and E. Cunningham for taking charge of the• gifts and Sisters S. Skotak and M. Nesuda for furnishing the wine. It was all very lovely and everyone seemed to have fun and in a joyous holiday spirit.

Remember we will not have a meeting in January. Our next meeting will be February 7, 1980. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to all!

LODGE NO. 183, MID-CITIES

Dear Readers: From the entire membership of Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities, we send our warm wishes for a very Merry Christmas and may Christ reign in your hearts during this joyful and holy season.

Bob and Barbara Botik wish to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to their relatives and friends for the many courtesies extended to them and their family during the sickness and upon the death of Barbara's dad, Laddy Bakluda, who died Monday, November 26, 1979.

They are deeply grateful for the mass offerings, flowers, food, cards and to those who paid tribute to his memory by attending the rosary and funeral. Thank you.

LODGE NO. 142, HOUSTON

Dear Members: President Henry Linhart called our annual meeting to order Sunday, December 2nd at 1 p.m.

There were fifty-eight members and two visitors present. We were happy to have District V Director Louis Hanus and District V Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska.

The pledge of allegiance to our flag started our meeting and then we held a moment of silence in memory of our departed Brother Oliver Barrett.

Roll call of officers followed and we were glad to have all officers present at this meeting.

We held election of,officers for 1980.

The officers elected were: President Henry Linhart, Vice President Mary Ann Kieschnick, Secretary Alice Jochen, Financial Secretary Rosie Tumis,

Treasurer Sidon Tumis, Youth Leader Henrietta Veselka, Assistant Youth Leader Eugene Veselka, Flag Bearer Dennis Veselka and Guide Gus Florian.

Various committees were nominated and appointed. The R and R Committee presented several changes, which were brought before the membership to be voted on.

We also nominated the delegates for the 1980 Convention.

Sister Marilyn Veselka brought up the subject about our lodge having a historian. Brother Sidon Tumis nominated Sister Marilyn Veselka as historian for 1980. She was elected by acclamation. Congratulations, and we feel sure you will be a great asset to our lodge in that capacity.

We had a capsule drawing for adult attendance's prize for $30; sorry Lloyd Zann, you were absent. Next month our prize goes to $35.

The youth capsule drawn for Michael T. Louval; sorry you were absent also.

Door prizes went to: Gus Florian, Paul Veselka, Gladys Pomikal and Rebecca Boles.

Our Christmas party with a program and Santa Claus is scheduled for Friday, December 21st at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting adjourned at 5:15 p.m.

The next meeting will be held Friday, January 4th, 1980 at 8 p.m.

LODGE NO. 80, HOLLAND Dear Fellow Members: Lodge No. 80 held its annual meeting Sunday, December 2nd at 2 p.m., with President Ricky Benner calling the meeting to order. The pledge of allegiance was recited by all the members present.

Roll call of officers showed all present.

On the sick list at this time we had Brother Jack Zschieske, but, at the present time, he is back from the hospital and doing fine.

All the committees gave good reports for the lodge activities.

Some of the meeting portion was the way some of the patrons conduct themselves at our dances, and what can be done about it. A further study about how to solve the above problem will be undertaken.

LODGE NO. 50, EL CAMPO

Dear Members: The SPJST Lodge No. 50 El Campo members held their quarterly meeting December 6th at the American Legion Auxiliary. We also had our Christmas party.

We had election of officers for the coming year. The following were elected: Sister Rita Vanek, president; Sister Bernice Rek, vice president; Sister Anna Bartos, secretary; Brother William Goerig, financial secretary; Sister Leona Macha, treasurer; Sister Vlasta Bartos, youth leader; and Sister Georgia Henderson, assistant youth leader. Flag Bearer is William Rek. The Board of Trustees are: Brother C.J. Massingill, Brother Frankie Vanek, Sister Madeline Shimek, Sister Delores Divin.

We discussed old and new business topics. After the meeting we had our party. Refreshments and turkey with dressing were served; the lodge paid for the dinner and refreshments. We had seventy-six members and guests present.

LODGE NO. 188, CENTERVILLE Dear Members: Our Christmas party will be held Friday, December 21st from 8 to 12 p.m.

Dennis Ivy Band will be our dance music, members will be honored with a free admission, a charge for their guests.

This is our formal Christmas dance, so be sure and tell your guests how to dress.

Also, Saturday, December 22nd, we want everyone dressed fora Christmas dance: semi-fdrmal or formal. The Charles Ellison Band will provide music.

Mark your calendar for New Year's Eve; we are having a nice party and favors, noise makers, and party hats, have been bought. The charge for admission will be $7 a person. You may bring guests also. We are selling advance tickets, but you may purchase one at the door.

December 16th at 7:30 p.m. was our monthly business meeting and we stayed to decorate for the Christmas party.

Everyone was asked to take part in our lodge because it is yours and we should all be proud to help.

NO. 74, LOVELADY

Dear Members and Friends: We enjoyed having the Nightime Friends provide our music at the lodge Saturday night. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. We had a nice crowd and hope they all keep coming to the lodge.

We had our regular monthly meeting Monday night, December 10th. We also voted on new officers for the lodge for the next year. The new officers are: President Ralph Smith, 1st Vice President James Wilcox, 2nd Vice President Hughie Smith, Secretary Creola Wilcox, Treasurer Mary McEnnis, Financial Secretary Hazel Smith, Youth Leader Elaine Erwin. We hope they all will do a good job for the lodge and we want them to know there are a lot of people behind them to offer their help.

The new trustees for the coming year are: Chili Hodges, Chester Shmoldas, Jerry Mitchka, Ray Johnson, Jeff Moore and Ben Erwin. These new officers and trustees will be installed at our January meeting.

We want to remind everyone that the youth club is still selling tickets for the 19-inch Panasonic portable color television. There are not many left; so please contact Elaine Erwin at 544-7510, Ralph Smith at 544-7044, or Charlene Bennett at 544-7708, if you are interested in buying any of the tickets.

At our meeting we also voted to remove all the games and pool tables out of the recreation room and fix it up for the younger children. The ones who have been using it have destroyed the cue sticks and several other things and they don't obey the lodge rules for the recreation room, so they left us no choice but to fix it so the little ones will have a place to stay and have fun. We hope it turns out well so more people who have children can come to the lodge and not worry about trying to find a babysitter. If anyone has any toys or books or anything they would like to donate to the children's game room, please get in

touch with Ralph Smith, Elaine Erwin or Charlene Bennett.

We had several new members voted into the lodge. They are: Gary B. Price, Gayles Price, Terry Price, Timothy Harkness, Robert W. SLAVONIC MUTUAL FIRE

CHRISTI, TEXAS

The annual meeting of the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association (SMFIA) was held Saturday, December 1st at 3:30 p.m. in the SPJST' Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi hall. The meeting was called to order by President Ray Cykala with the members reciting the pledge of allegiance. The attendance was only sixteen members. Then we all stood up in tribute to express our sympathy of the departed Vice President John Ulcak; he died at his home on June 19, 1979.

All officers were present and their reports were accepted with applause.

All officers were elected by acclamation. Their salaries are unchanged. No inflation in this event. Thanks to the present officers, who said they are satisfied what they are getting now.

Officers for 1980 are: President Ray Cykala (re-elected), Vice President Adna

Wednesday, December 19, 1.979 Koonce (new officer). Sister Wilma Ulcak, who served the unexpired term of her late husband did not accept the nomination.

There is no vote on the honorary president, Brother John Stasa; he was elected in 1975 for his whole life.

The Sokol adults' party was arranged many years ago in the Christmas season and was a popular event. I attended this social party with my goodhearted son-in-law Roy Peal; his lovely wife (my daughter Ann) stayed at home because she had trouble with her rheumatism. I enjoyed the snack, the music, and the friendly members.

We got home at 11 p.m. In recent days I had a visit with my family doctor. He said nothing was wrong with me, so I hope to joyfully celebrate, on December 31st, my 89th birthday.

16 CZECH HERITAGE SOCIETY MEETING The Czech Heritage Society of South Texas held their meeting at 7:30 p.m.

December 4, 1979 in the SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi building.

President Jos. B. Sefcik called the meeting to order. Mr. Prochazka, from Robstown, is the secretary of the By-law Committee. He read the continuation from the last meeting held October 9, 1979. Minor changes were made. The final reading of these By-laws and rules will be in the next meeting on January 5, 1980 at 7:30 p.m., at the same place-- Sokol Hall. A large attendance is expected.

Sunday, December 2nd, 1979, Sokol Corpus Christi had their family social.

My daughter Ann came to my home at 4:30 p.m. to give me the transportation to this occasion. When we stopped on the parking lot, we noticed men who were around the kettle cooking stew (gula0 for supper. We shook hands with them and sampled the gulaK; it was good.

Then I walked inside the building and while I was talking with one of the Sokol members, (Brother J.B. Sefcik) a man came to us and said that there in the dancing room, is a television program.

There were two TVs (one with the football game at one side at the wall, and the other at the other wall, with the Majek's music and dancers. While I was talking and watching this program with the Sokol member and president of SPJST Lodge No. 79, Frank C. Sacky, the same man came to us to announce, in a loud voice: "Mr. John Stasa will speak." Brother Sacky asked me what I have to say? I answered that I don't know. In that moment we noticed that my speech came up on the TV. It was a part of the program of the ground-breaking for the new building of the SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi in 1977. There were eight speakers and I was one of them. Brother Mack Munson, the master of ceremonies, made a tape recording, but I did not notice that Mr. Ernie Orsak was there and made a film. It was a wonderful surprise.

Somemore Filming The next day, December 3rd in the afternoon, I had the honor of having visitors: Mr. J. Patrick Luby and Miss

Ruth Harwood (they are students of the University of Texas in Austin). Mr. J.P. Luby, in November, made a telephone call to me. He introduced himself, gave his name and his father's name: J.P. Luby who is Nueces County Commissioner at the present time and his uncle is Jason Luby, who was Corpus Christi mayor for five years.

September 8th, 1977, he gave a Goodwill Ambassador Testimonial Certificate to me. This mayor, Jason Luby, was also one of the speakers at the ground-breaking celebration for the new hall. This student will get some credit in his classes for producing his works in the history of the Czech emigrants and the parts of his learning in photography and television. This act lasted two hours. He snapped everything; I have, hanging on my walls in the living and dining rooms, some snapshots from my history book which I am writing for the SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi.

I wish this young and diligent man great success in his future life.

Representatives of the Farmers Mutual Protective Association of Texas [RVOS] recently presented contributions totaling $300 to the Czech Language program at Temple Junior College. RVOS is a Czech-founded farmers' mutual insurance company and has contributed to the TJC Czech program since 1975. [PR Office of Temple Junior College, TJC].

The Temple Junior College has received a total of $300 for Czech language and cultural programs from the Farmers Mutual Protective Association of Texas (RVOS), a Czechfounded farmers' mutual insurance company.

The state organization provided $250 and the Temple lodge provided $50 for the Czech fund. The money will be used for scholarships, instructional supplies and enrichment programs, James Mendl, Czech instructor, said.

The money was presented to Mendl during a Czech class meeting by Mrs. Florence Reisner, secretary of the Temple Lodge No. 133 and Jerry E. Valchar, state RVOS president. They discussed Czech origins and heritage with the class members.

RVOS was founded in 1901 at Ocker, near Temple. Membership is mainly from rural areas and the organization supports junior colleges throughout the state. The organization now has 160 lodges in Texas.

TJC has offered Czech on a regular basis since 1972. The Czech program includes study of the languages as well as Czech cultural heritage. Both credit and non-credit classes are available.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 130, DALLAS Dear Members, We went to Fort Parker State Park November 30th.

December 2nd we had much fun.

Saturday night we had a hilarious "Roaring 20's" party. Half of the recreation hall was for dancing and the other half was for table games. After the party we had a snipe hunt. We had many

surprises. The biggest one being a gorilla.

Friday night was talent night. Laura Pottkotter, Carla Pottkotter and Leanne Parma did a dance routine to "Bad Girls." Kathy Pottkotter, our youth leader, went along and tried to follow us.

Disco dancing is not her bag. There was also a Dork and Dindy skit, an excellent "Band" and the fabulous Canned Brew Sisters and Carmen Miranda. The Skrabaneks also did a very funny skit.

The food was delicious. We made homemade bread. For crafts we made wishing wells and Christmas ornaments.

Sunday, December 9th we had our regular meeting and a beautiful Christmas party. Everyone had presents.

The kids got Susan B. Anthony dollars.

We had a Santa Claus in bright red suit. He gave out all the presents.

We had drawings for door prizes. We had a big Christmas dinner.

Sister Vanzura was born in Yoakum, Texas on 18 February 1898, and had lived in West since 1917. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court 829, and the SPJST Lodge No. 54 for 50 years.

Sister Vanzura was chairman of the Clerical Endowment Fund for 25 years.

She married Walter Vanzura 5 July 1917, in Hobson. He died 24 October 1957.

Survivors include three sons, V.J. (Larry) Vanzura of Waco, Bill Vanzura of Burleson and Walter L. Vanzura of Route 2, West; a daughter, Mrs. Joyce Taggart of Robinson; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Goetz of San Antonio, Mrs. Lillian Payne and Mrs. Till Russell, both of Kennedy; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Brother Korteff was born in Macedonia, Yugoslavia November 8, 1896. He was married to Sister Annie Kret June 20, 1921 in Bastrop, Texas.

She passed away three years ago.

He retired from Swift and Company in 1961 after 42 years of service.

He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, a 45-year member of Lodge No. 154 and the Friendship Club and Ladies' Circle.

Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Jack (Flora Jane) Ryder of Morro Bay, California, Mrs. Jim (Doris) Burnette of Fort Worth, Mrs. Ray (Romaine Dolly) Hoveland of Keller; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

ITEMS OF INTEREST CONTROL PERSONAL INFLATION Feel poorer in spite of earning the highest income of your life?

You're not alone -- and there is something you can do about it, says Nancy Granvosky, a family resource management specialist.

Mrs. Granovsky is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A and M University System.

One reason we feel poorer comes from the tax squeeze, she says.

"Inflation has helped push our incomes• to higher levels, but because of the way our tax system works, our wage-increase dollars are taxed at a higher rate than our pre-wage-increase dollars," she explains.

"And changes in the social security laws also take a bigger bite then they did before."

Controlling personal inflation involves choice-making, Mrs. Granovsky says.

How we spend our after-tax dollars is the key, she stresses.

FIGHT INFLATION RATES One thing we can do is fight the rate of inflation.

For example, if prices increase at the rate of 1.1 percent each month, consumers can: 1) Cut back spending by 1.1 percent.

2) Substitute for -- or change -- the mix of things you buy so your total bill is 1.1 percent less.

3.) Don't change anything, but pay 1.1. percent less through careful buying.

4) Find alternative, non-economic means of satisfying your needs. `IMPACT' STEPS Fighting the rate of inflation will take specific "impact" steps, Mrs. Granovsky says.

Here are five "impact" steps to accomplish some of the four plans listed above: KICK THE CREDIT HABIT--Use credit prudently, not for spreading out the cost of everyday living.

Unpaid charge accounts take an added 1.5 percent per month from your spending money.

GET DISCOUNTS--Some merchants may be willing to give a five-to-seven percent discount to cash-paying customers.

SAVE FIVE CENTS--Save five cents on every dollar you spend for a total five percent savings.

Coupons for food purchases can save money if the price does not exceed that

ETHNOGRAPHIC QUESTIONS OF CZECH EMIGRATION TO AMERICA Antonin Robek Continued from November 21, 1979 issue.

Another extremely rich ethnographic source, which has not yet been centrally collected and treated, is correspondence.

The Czechs, known for their respect for written documents, generally kept their correspondence with their relatives abroad; this is why large quantities of these letters from America written after 1850 have been preserved. We have, for instance, many letters written by Czech political emigrants after the so-called May Conspiracy in 1849. I can name letters from Josef Vokalek from the war of the North against the South, letters from men and women from Texas, for example, letters addressed to South Bohemia which were collected by Kubin, and other letters from almost every region of America. Certainly, many such letters are still kept by private persons.

The letters very well illustrate the life of people who were getting used to American conditions; they describe exceptional events in which they took part. The letters reveal problems encountered by the Czechs in establishing contacts with the local population and the ethnic composition of the population in the regions where they settled (many letters deal with the Indian question); they also speak about the gold-rush and other historical events.

Currently, we are finishing the first anthology of these letters, which are important ethnographic and folkloric sources.

Very interesting but little known sources are chronicles, various retro-

spective notices, diaries, and other written materials on life in America. To give an example of an extensive account of the origin of one American tradition, let me name the work "In the Old and New Homeland" written by Barbora CernouKkova, born Kegova, which describes in a very attractive-form and in simple words the life of a Czech emigrant in America. Many such original American chronicle-like accounts exist.

They have come to the Czech lands either as gifts or inheritance or they have been just sent from America. Interesting materials can be found also in chronicles written in the Czech lands. They contain memories and chronicle notices of Czechs who had lived in America, their life stories, and often very interesting correspondence. For instance, the personal chronicle of a Mr. Mach from the Rychnov region describes life in America in a very interesting way, based on correspondence with his acquaintances and with his son-in-law who emigrated to America. There are many such materials. They are to be gradually published; otherwise, they are practically inaccessible because they are in private hands.

Another very interesting and little known source is narrations of people recollecting some period of their lives; many of them were written and some even published. Many such memoirs and narrations and published by the American magazine Hospodi • (in West, Texas). It makes public the recollections of old people concerning their lives in their mother land as well as the life in America, recollections of the days when they were getting used to America conditions. These accounts are extremely interesting because they not only provide fundamental information, but also because they have even a folkloric character. We also have many such memoirs either in manuscripts or in printed form, mainly of the past century.

A folk publicist from Mlada Boleslav, Jan Evangelista Konopas, made public a number of memoirs of his friends who had emigrated; the local press in the Czech lands printed many such memoirs.

The recollections of the life in the mother land, as well as of the life in America bear traces of sentimentality. They are evidence of the sad parting with the emigrants' homes, they relate the big difficulties in taking root in America, and they also indicate a certain pride in attaining economic well-being or other success. Balladic tones can often be heard in the narration, and tragic features are not missing either ' Present in all cases is nostalgic memory of youth in the mother land: recollections of a very warm relationship with the mother land

which the narrators had to leave for social reasons, and this even in the case of those who had forgotten even the language.

A very important and interesting source of knowledge of the way of life of the emigrants is learning the way of life and culture of the places from which the emigrants came. According to the latest research, a considerable portion of the emigrants living in Texas came from South Bohemia and from the Walachia region in Moravia. The ethnographic studies of these regions together with ethnographic research in America indicate interesting problems. It is well known that emigrants usually preserve the older forms of folk culture and of the language which do not, naturally, develop so quickly as if the country of origin; not only older forms of the language, but also older forms of customs are maintained.

They play a different role in the new environment than at home, a role of nostalgic recollecting of the mother land.

The celebrations of Christmas by emigrants in America could be given as an example. The Institute of Ethnography and Folklore of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences is currently working on a monograph about the way of life and about the culture of the Czech people in the national enlightment period, that is, at the end of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century, which will describe the material, intellectual and social culture of the Czech people. This work should show also to the descendants of Czech emigrants the high culture of the country their ancestors had left, upon which they themselves could build, and that they need not be ashamed of the country of their origin; on the contrary, this high culture was a dignified equal to all cultures of old Europe: it had its original national Czech nature and it influenced to no small degree, as is known, the culture of America. In addition to this work, monographs about various regions, for instance, South Bohemia, are being prepared, and work continues on a monograph about traditional culture-songs of individual regions, photo collections of folk architecture, l.:ltumes, ceramics and art, which will make it possible for the Czechs living in America to acquire knowledge of the culture of their fathers or grandfathers. of great value is the ettinogiapic material from the Ethnographic Czech-Slavonic Exhibition in 1895 in which Czechs living in America also took part. This material and objects are now pratically unknown. On display, at the American part of the exhibition were

Wednesday, December 19, 1979 typical buildings of Czechs living in America, such as the log-cabin of the first emigrants (it was originally planned to build also a turf-hut, but efforts to do so were not successful), a farm-house, the home of a prosperous Czech-Ameridan, a Catholic church, and a saloon.

The visitors to the exhibition could see in these buildings a large number of everyday articles as well as interesting documents on the activity and history of Czechs living in America. A detailed work about this activity was written by the emigrants and published in the Czech lands. The exhibit also gathered very valuable documents of Czech culture. On display were the oldest Czech magazines,. old chronicles and Bibles taken by ties of Czech organizations and clubs. A history of Czech emigration was written for the occasion. Czechs living in Texas, who had are mentioned many times in the materials, took part in these activities. All this had been preserved, as well as the correspondence concerning the exhibition and many photographs both from America and from the exhibition itself. The materials are now being studied and a publication about the exhibition will be published next year. A comprehensive article has already been prepared for the magazine CESKY LID and it will be published next year. On display at the exhibition were also products of Czech firms as well as objects of material culture common to Czech families living in America in the nineties of the nineteenth century; Interesting among them were ceramic objects. Statistical material from the exhibition is also very interesting.

The above-mentioned data show that there is a large quantity of material concerning the ethnography of Czechs living in America and that it is being gradually processed so that a synthetic ethno gr aphic-historical work on the causes and forms of emigration from the Czech lands to America could be written in the next ten years. A work on the development of the Czech ethnic group in the United States of America is also planned. Another work should concern the life of Czechs in America, but in this case, there will be naturally problems with research on American soil. Perhaps experts from Texas universities could undertake this task. Some time in the future, a work could be written about the contributions of ethnic Czechs living in America to the building of the United States of America and its individual regions.

In the second part of my lecture, I should like to speak about some results of the studies of questions relating to Czech emigration carried out on the basis of archives materials. As I have

already said, work continues on a historical survey of Czech emigration to the countries of the American Continent.

It is a well-known fact that this has been treated on the American side by Tomas Capek, J. Hebenicht, Estelle Hudson, and Henry R. Maresh, to name at least some of them. They worked mainly with recollections of the emigrants and their descendants which were collected in America and which were only rarely in a written form. They also used statistical materials and essays written by Czech or Austrian authorities dealing with emigration were used only exceptionally.

However, we have at our disposal part of the materials of the former Austrian Ministry of the Interior which was charged in Austria with the questions of emigration. In the State Archives in Prague there are deposited some documents of the former Czech vice-regency, the archives of the police presidium, and some other materials containing data and reports on emigration. Similar records of the former Moravian-Silesian lands are kept in the State Archives in Brno. State regional archives, which have been established in all regions of Czechoslovakia, hold, INTER ALIA, the archives of the former Austrian regional offices which dealt with emigration in the fifties and sixties of the past century; the archives also shelter parish registers and estate registers which contain data on emigrants and also on their property, and the like. After 1867, questions relating to emigration started to be dealt with by former district executives. (There used to be about one hundred of these executives in Bohemia, and about 60 in Moravia.) These materials -- the files of former land authorities, for instance -are now kept in district archives. But the districts were often and substantially changed, causing the materials of some regions to be deposited in the archives of several districts. Material on the East Moravian region, for instance, whose population emigrated mainly to Texas, can now be found in three archives--the district archives at FrYdek-Mistek, Novy Jicin and Vsetin. Similarly, materials on the Gottwaldov region are kept in the archives at Gottwaldov, Holegov, and Urherske Hradigte.

The materials are extremely valuable even though it is necessary to take into account the fact that they were partially destroyed in the past and that they represent only a fragment of the written documents on emigration which had existed. In addition, the preserved materials speak only about those emigrants who left the country legally, that is, those who applied for passports.

But we know that only about 60 percent

of the emigrants from the Czech lands had legal documents. The rest left without permit--they either had trouble with the authorities or courts or they wanted to evade military service. We learn about them from archives reports on searches for these persons launched by military authorities or courts. Much material of this kind can be found in libraries, for instance, the Naprstek library, or the libraries of many museums all over Czechoslovakia. A team of workers would be necessary to adequately study these extensive holdings.

Let me deal now with some questions of emigration to Texas in the light of these archive materials. In the period of mass emigration, that is, in the years 1850-1914, the largest numbers of Czechs were emigrating to Vienna, followed by the United States of America, Germany, the Slavonic countries in the Balkans, and the East of Europe from Poland to Russia. In 1910, about 400,000 people born in Bohemia and Moravia lived in Lower Austria. The number of people born in the Czech lands living in the United States in 1900 reached 357,000. Emigrants to Vienna were mainly people from areas ranging from Plzen to South Bohemia and further to South Moravia, but some came also from North Moravia and other regions. People from the area extending from Cheb to North Bohemia and to Silesia were emigrating to Germany; Silesia, Leipzig, Berlin or Westphalia, which attracted mainly miners. The destinations of people from Central Bohemia were the Balkans, Serbia, Romania, and later Bulgaria and the United States of America.

The knowledge Czech people had of Texas was considerable already in the national revival period. A number of essays and articles on Texas published in the current magazines describe not only nature, but also people and economic and social problems. The popularity of Texas was undoubtedly enhanced also by Karel Antonin Postl (1793-1864), born at Popice at Znojmo, South Moravia, who spent the years 1823-1826 in North America, mainly in Pennsylvania, and who wrote widely on the subject of Texas under the assumed name of Charles Sealsfield. Another Czech, Frederick Lomsky, came to Texas in 1836. Antonin Michael Dignovity (1810-1875) came to Texas in 1833, and settled in San Antonio in 1846. He is known for his recollections and accounts. Studies of his works, deposited in our archives, show that Dignovity's words about his family are greatly idealized and that there is not Continued on page 28.

Tak zni slova pametni desky na rodnem Slamenikove domku v Radslavicich u Pferova k ucteni tohoto nezigtneho vlastence, dlouholeteho pfedstavitele sdruieni morayskeho ueitelstva, zakladatele pferovskeho Komenskeho muzea, vydavatele easopisu Komensk9 a celonvotniho sberatele pamatek poueiteli nfirodu - Janu Amosu Komenskem.

Fr. Slamenik se narodil v femeslnicke rodine (otec byl ealounik a sedlif) s Ceskobratrskou tradici. Jeho dedeeek z mateiny strany, Jan Drobenik, met dokonce be vlastnictvi J.A. Komenskeho Orbis Pictus, Branu jazykii, vzicne tisky starch bibli a ialmu a celou fadu jin9ch historick9ch knih. Cetba techto knih, jak v mladi doma a pozdeji i na studiich v Lipniku a v Olomouci, vyvolala v Slamenikovi trvalou fictu k bratrske jednote a k jejimu poslednimu biskupovi J.A. Komenskemu.

Po absolvovani abiturientskeho ueitelskeho kursu v Olomouci Slamenik piisobil 11 let na gkolich v Kromefiii, 10 let v Kojetine u Pferova a v Pferove v letech 1884 di 1905. Hned na zaCatku sve ueitelske drahy se horlive zapojil do vlastenecko-osvetove Cinnosti. Jii v Kromefiii byl 'Menem v9znamneho peveckeho spolku "Moravan" a hral zde i ochotnicky divadlo. Od roku 1870 se natrvalo i ujal ueitelsko-organizaeni price a piisobil jako jednatel kromefiiskeho spolku "Komensk9."

Kdyi dva roky pozdeji se tato organizace pfipojila ke "Spolku moraysk9ch v Olomouci, Slamenik se stal na Zadost znameho profesora Jana Havelky vydavatelem t9rdeniku "Komensk9" tohoto ueitelskeho sdruieni. Teto vydavatelske praci - navic sveho normalniho ueitelskeho zamestnani a Casteho pusobeni v rilzn9ch narodne obrozeneck9ch akcich - venoval Slamenik 27 let! Tento vlastenec byl tai hlavnim organizatorem fispe gn9ch pietnich oslav dvousteho v9roCi smrti J.A. Komenskeho a met velkou zasluhu k zbudovani v Pferove prvniho pomniku J.A. Komenskeho ve stare vlasti. Tento pomnik, dilo Tomage Seidana profesora praiske techniky pfestavujici Komenskeho se sv9m iakem, byl odhalen v

Pferove v srpnu 1874 na Hornim namesti. Nyni se tento piskovcov9 zlacen9 pomnik, povaiovan9 za nejstargi ' sochu pfedstavujici J.A. Komenskeho, nachazi v ulici J. Capky Drahlovskeho.

Mramorova deska v pfedni lunete soklu zaznamenala na Vane easy slavnostni odhaleni pomniku temito slovy: J.A. Komenskemu vdeen9 narod. Peel ustfedniho spolku moraysk9ch MDCCCLXXIV. Roku 1882 Slamenik byl zvolen pfedsedou "Spolku ueitelstva moravskeho" a stal se tak osou vegkereho ueitelskeho deni moravy. Jeho pfiCinenim byl zaveden roku 1888 svepomocn9 podpurn9 fond, urCen9 hlavne pro sirotky a vdovy po ucitelich, kter se naz9val Jubilejni, od roku 1918 "Slamenikilv."

Kdyi se koneene spinilo v roce 1884 jeho davne pfini piisobit jako ueitel v Pferove, kde byl jmenovan feditelem chlapecke a divei me gt'anske gkoly, Slamenik se mohl Komenskemu jegte vice venovat. Datum oficialniho zaloieni Komenskeho muzea byl rok 1888 a jeho zakladatelem nebyl nikdo jin9 nei Frantigek Slamenik. Ac z poCatku nebylo pro toto muzeum vhodn9ch mistnosti, tak v roce 1899 situace byla zachrinena postavenim dvou nov9ch gkolnich budov, kde Komenskeho muzeum bylo umistneno v knihovne v roce 1903.

Slamenikovo vlastenectvi a neobyeejni laska k tomuto muzeu tkvi tai v torn, ie sv9ch penez hradil vegkere naklady.

Navic jezdil po stopich Komenskeho nejen ye vlasti, ale i po cele Evrope a kupoval pamatky, ktere zbyly po tomto vehlasnem uciteli narodii. Za tomto fieelem procestoval Viden, Linec, Mnichov, Lipsko, Draid'any, Berlin, Krakov, Paffi; dale pak Cast Italie a v roce 1902 timer. cele Holandsko. Na v'gech sv9ch cestach sbiral tai bohat9 material k publikacim, ktere uvefejlioval v mnoha Casopisech. Podnetem pro tuto tak neobyeejnou zberatelskou einnost bylo jeho pfikladne vlastenectvi s doznivajicimi obrozeneck9mi rysy.

Slamenik se vzdal v roce 1901 funkce pfedsedy spolku mora ysk9ch ueitelii a od roku 1905, kdii odegel do v9sluiby, venoval se cele Komenskemu muzeu. Ani zhoubna nemoc - dna a pozdeji oslepnuti - ho neodradila od dal gi vedecke price.

Je znamo, ie i v tomto obdobi nadale pracoval a i tehda, kdyi ui byl (mine ochromen, nechaval se donesti do muzea. V dobe slepoty diktoval sve ogetfovatelce Synkove - Simeakove sve posledni elanky.

Kdyi neco potfebuji, tak to bYva vidy moje prvni pomoc. Moje zdravi je v takovim stavu, kde si sam vedu svoji domacnost. Prace venkovni mne tegi, nejvetgi radost mi poskytnou ovocne a stinne stromy, kefe malinove a kvetouci.

Amok Bergman, a pastor at Strouzny in Kladsko between 1830 and 1848, emigrated to Texas in 1849 and settled in the then predominantly German community of Catspring, from which he sent appeals to Bohemia and Moravia, Czech writer Ignat Herrmann, who treated the memories of his parents after their return home in a literary form.

Bergman's appeals found greatest response in East Bohemia. More than 30 families left Dolni and Horni Cermna in the years 1851-1854. The emigrants included a former member of the Czech Land Diet in 1848, Josef Loeschinger, known later in Texas as Josef Lidumil Le g ikar. Texas became a new home for both Czechs and Germans from the LanKkroun district, East Bohemia. The state of Texas, Wisconsin and Iowa received 672 families from the Pardubice region, also East Bohemia, in the years 1850-1853. Other families, mainly Czech ones, emigrated to Serbia. In the first eight months of 1852, as many as 69 families to Texas. In the year 1852 alone, 4,000 people left Bohemia, and in the years 1853-1855, it was 6,000 people yearly.

Emigration in that time was organized, for instance, by merchant Josef Spiegel from Choceii and FrantiKek Kafes from Ceska Tfebova. In 1854 the official PRAGER ZEITUNG paper was still publishing advertisements on emigration to Galveston, in Texas. According to reports in police archives, the cost of the trans-Atlantic ticket was quite high, about 200 Austrian guldens per person. But in 1865 the Austrian authorities banned the activity of emigration agencies, the establishment of which was supported by Bremen companies, and they propagated the colonization of some parts of Hungary.

In 1857, rules guiding the issuing of passports were announced with the aim of making emigration more difficult.
