FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Your editor wishes to remind our members and friends of the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of Lodge Jaromir No. 54 in West Sunday, December 2nd at the lodge's premises located on North Davis Street in West, Texas. A delicious barbecued beef dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; also food to go will be served at that time. A special program will be aired over the KHBR-Hillsboro Radio Station from 1:30 to 2:55 p.m. The 38-member Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Brother Sid Pokladnik of Dallas will provide the music during the program and afternoon. Texas Representative Dan Kubiak of Rockdale will be the featured speaker. Other speakers will include the Mayor of West, Brother Adolph Muska, and SL President Nick Morris of Temple. The highlight of the program will be honoring all the former Lodge 54 presidents and present president. In addition to the afternoon's activities, there will also be entertainment by the West Beseda Dancers at 3 p.m., and an auction supervised by Brother John Mynar will be in store for you following the performance by the well-known dancers, under the direction of Sister Maggie Grmela. The special drawing of prizes will take place sometime in the evening. The public is, of course, cordially invited to attend. Surely all of us, middle-aged people and members, remember the gay times and political rallies that used to be held at Lodge No. 54, West in the past!
HOW TRUE! HOW TRUE!! A secret is what you tell someone else .. not to tell because you can't keep it .. to yourself. Arthur Orloff Death and Taxes may always be with .. us, but death at least doesn't get any .. worse. Show me a man with head held high, .. and I'll show you a man who can't .. get used to bifocals. No matter what happens, there's .. somebody who knew it would. Lonny Starr You know 75 years is a long time and the founders who established Lodge No. 54, West certainly were building for a foundation for the future 75 years from their date of getting together and founding another lodge in our SPJST Society! Please help us commemorate this event at our home in the FRIENDLY CITY OF WEST! *** Keep in mind the West Sokol Unit meeting at the Dunbar Gym to be held Monday, December 10th. -- More about that next week. Thanksgiving has stolen a day from our work! Get ready to continue hearing Christmas carols for a month! and enjoy turkey and dressing leftovers!
When there's a death in the family, it is often hard to think about practical matters that may have a significant effect on the family's future, but there are important steps the survivors should take. Here is a list. --Obtain an original copy of the deceased person's last will and also certified copies of the death certificate (the funeral director will probably take care of the latter). --Notify the insurance agent or the local or home office of the life insurance company with which the deceased person had a policy. --Search likely places (safety deposit boxes, briefcases, strong boxes, desks, safes) for important papers, such as stocks, bonds, savings account books, and deeds of ownership. --Notify your lawyer. (However, it is not necessary to hire a lawyer to obtain life insurance benefits). --Notify companies where the deceased person has unpaid debts or loans, and banks and brokerage houses where the deceased had accounts. Inform his or her employer, business associates, fraternal or other organizations to which the person belonged, and the Veterans Administration for death benefits, if applicable. --Contact your local Social Security office to determine eligibility for survivor or death benefits. Often the funeral director can apply for the $225 death benefit for you, but these funds are available to surviving spouses directly from Social Security.
