FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK You cannot stop some people! Brother J.M. Skrabanek, age 90, has sold over $600,000, insurance from January 1, 1979 through October 31, 1979 per last week's report on page 10 of our Vestnik and in this week's report of Sister Evelyn Mikeska it states sales for October, 1979. At any rate, congratulations Brother Joe, you are an inspiration to all of usl SFM Silas Smith suffered a mild heart attack Monday, November 12th and was confined to Hillcrest Baptist Hospital in Waco. He was expected to leave for his home Saturday, November 17th. The news reached the editor's office too late for the last week's issue, however, in those types of cases, rest is the most essential and we are sure our readers will understand. Our Society and membership wish him a speedy recovery. SL Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, notified your editor's office of his condition. Take care and don't give up Brother Smith! * C. * Among 100 reasons for not writing a, card or letter when traveling is lack of a dictionary and lack of assurance that you know how to spell such words as 'traveling' or 'dictionary.' Most of us have dictionaries at home, but they are too bulky to pack for travel. The solution of this problem is the Instant Speller which supplies, in compact form, the correct spelling of 6,000 commonly misspelled words. The Speller is about the size and weight of Reader's Digest. If your word is 'embarrass' you slide an arrow to `e,' press a button, and a spring opens the book to a page on which the difficult `e' words are listed. There are about 300 'e'
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY My kind of loyalty was loyalty to one's country, not to its institutions or its officeholders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to; institutions are extraneous, they are its mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease and death. Mark Twain words, beginning with 'eager and ending with 'exultation.' Since 'z' is a short list, I am reprinting it: Zealot, zealous, zebra, zebu, zenith, zephyr, Zeppelin, zero, zest, zigzag, zinc, zinnia, Zion, zipper, zither, zodiac, zone, zoological, zoom, Zulu, zweiback. The Instant Speller was devised and copyrighted by Dr. W. Smith, Los Angeles 35, California. It is available at book stores and from mail order houses. *** The first American life insurance agent was Israel Whelen of Philadelphia, in 1807. He began selling life insurance in the newly-independent nation on behalf of a London-based company. ** * With earnings comes responsibility. That apparently is the lesson being learned by the millions of United States women who have entered the nation's work force in recent years. Reflecting the growing importance of their earnings to their families, women are buying more life insurance than ever before in the U.S. The average size of
individually purchased life insurance for women jumped 287 percent between 1968 and 1978, compared with men's purchases, which rose 204 percent. When asked what life goal is most important, most people choose "a happy family life,". A recent national opinion survey also found that, believe it or not, most people say their least important goal is "making a lot of money." ** How can a family provide itself with adequate financial protection in the face of unrelenting inflation? One way is to review your family situation periodically - say once a year. That way you can determine what new financial needs have arisen and what obligations have to be met since your last review. During the review, for example, you may decide you need more life insurance, or should begin a new savings or investment program in light of changes in your economic condition. You should also review your financial protection whenever there is a substantial change in your family situation, such as a change in jobs, promotions, birth of a child or purchase of a house. Most people who buy life insurance in the U.S. do so on an individual basis. that is, by a personal or family decisior and usually through a life insurance agent. Over two-thirds of the $407 billion o new life insurance purchased last yea was ordinary life insurance, which wa bought individually. Group purchases amounted to nearl one-third of total life insurance bough last year, almost all of it provided b
